A Topeka police officer fatally shot 41-year-old Jessica Treat during a tense morning confrontation on South Kansas Avenue. The incident began when Treat, driving an SUV, circled a disabled vehicle, crashed into it, and exited wielding a large knife. She attacked a bystander before entering the Townsite Tower, where security footage captured her threatening another person who pleaded, “Don’t kill me.” Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Treat refused, prompting the officer to fire one shot.
