- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz. Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Paps.
- 0:21Speaker 4: The magical sports month of October continues. Paul, what do
- 0:24Speaker 4: we got on tap? A lot.
- 0:25Speaker 5: We're going to talk about some quarterback situations in the NFL,
- 0:27Speaker 5: and not so good, some of them. Also, we're going
- 0:29Speaker 5: to tackle a topic in just a minute, which I
- 0:31Speaker 5: never thought would ever be on any sports show. Should
- 0:34Speaker 5: the Dodgers consider benching or sitting Shohei Otani? That's not
- 0:38Speaker 5: one I had on my bingo card.
- 0:39Speaker 4: No, it is unbelievable, but I think that's the biggest
- 0:41Speaker 4: topic of the MLB playoffs right now. Let's dive right
- 0:44Speaker 4: into it with Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. who commented on
- 0:47Speaker 4: whether Otani was going to play in game three.
- 0:51Speaker 6: He's adamant. He feels good enough to be in there.
- 0:55Speaker 6: He's close to finding something with his swing. And I
- 1:00Speaker 6: feel great about it. And to be clear, it was
- 1:03Speaker 6: never a benching. It's more of, hey, man, if you're
- 1:07Speaker 6: not feeling good enough that you can feel like you
- 1:09Speaker 6: can perform up to your ability, then we'll pivot. We'll
- 1:12Speaker 6: give you a couple of days. And talking to him,
- 1:15Speaker 6: he feels like he's close to finding something and was
- 1:18Speaker 6: close yesterday in finding something mechanically. With that, I'm excited.
- 1:22Speaker 6: So I'm all about it. And so he'll be in there.
- 1:26Speaker 5: There's a few things to unpack there from Dave Roberts' comments.
- 1:29Speaker 5: First of all, he was Mr.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Positive.
- 1:31Speaker 5: He's going to be talking glowingly about Otani. I would
- 1:33Speaker 5: like to know how the conversation starts. Does he walk
- 1:35Speaker 5: up to Shohei away from the rest of the team
- 1:38Speaker 5: in the hallways and the catacombs and say, how are
- 1:40Speaker 5: we feeling? How does that conversation start? But I don't
- 1:43Speaker 5: think you want to be the manager who somehow sits
- 1:45Speaker 5: Shohei Otani and loses that game. To me, that would
- 1:48Speaker 5: be more dangerous than playing him and him going over.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I don't know. Let's look at the numbers.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Otani hasn't homered since August 18th, and he's hitting 156.
- 1:57Speaker 4: In 24 games since then, he looks harmless at the plate, Paul.
- 2:01Speaker 4: You know you can see with your own eyes. You
- 2:02Speaker 4: don't have to be a former baseball player to know
- 2:05Speaker 4: those swings look wrong.
- 2:06Speaker 5: It is the look of it, too. He's chasing pitches
- 2:08Speaker 5: he normally wouldn't do. He never looks like this. That exhale.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Last year in the playoffs, he was intentionally walked nine times.
- 2:14Speaker 5: You didn't want any part of him. You know what
- 2:17Speaker 5: stood out today? Joey Votto, the former Reds slugger, great hitter,
- 2:20Speaker 5: talked about this and said, Would the Brewers want to
- 2:23Speaker 5: face Otani tonight? He goes, yeah, if I'm the Brewers,
- 2:25Speaker 5: I want Otani out there. Wouldn't that tell you something?
- 2:28Speaker 4: Absolutely. I actually would have had the guts, if I
- 2:31Speaker 4: was Roberts, to sit him. He's right in the middle
- 2:33Speaker 4: of that lineup, no matter where you hit him. The
- 2:36Speaker 4: problem is the rest of the lineup seems to be
- 2:38Speaker 4: getting infected by Otani. I know that doesn't make any sense,
- 2:40Speaker 4: but nobody's hitting. They're hitting 193 as a team. They
- 2:43Speaker 4: have one hit with scores of running position in this series.
- 2:46Speaker 2: They're in trouble.
- 2:47Speaker 5: I could see Dave Roberts think to himself, this has
- 2:49Speaker 5: to end at some point, and it only ends if
- 2:51Speaker 5: he's on the field. It does feel that there's some superstars,
- 2:54Speaker 5: in all sports, who are unbenchable. If they had a
- 2:57Speaker 5: run of badness. Let's say Josh Allen had three bad games.
- 3:00Speaker 5: He's not benchable. And I think Shohei Otani is in
- 3:03Speaker 5: that category where he's not in danger of injuring himself.
- 3:06Speaker 5: The season could be over in three days. I could
- 3:09Speaker 5: see to myself... He has to tell me there's a problem.
- 3:12Speaker 5: You're Dave Roberts.
- 3:13Speaker 4: Well, it's not really benchable, as Roberts said.
- 3:15Speaker 2: It's sit-able. He's hurt.
- 3:17Speaker 4: He's clearly hurt. You watch him swing. He's not using
- 3:20Speaker 4: his lower body. Every expert's been pointing that out. He's
- 3:22Speaker 4: having trouble, I think, with his knee. So if he's hurt,
- 3:25Speaker 4: then you just have to sometimes tell a player.
- 3:27Speaker 2: This is what happened.
- 3:28Speaker 4: If Josh Allen's arm was hurt and he really wasn't himself,
- 3:32Speaker 4: On occasion, a coach would sit him. So it's clearly
- 3:34Speaker 4: a health situation again. But, you know, it's not just Otani.
- 3:38Speaker 4: They just need something. They need a spark plug. And
- 3:41Speaker 4: Otani is up there. I have a question about Otani, though.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Do you think he can will himself to be good again?
- 3:45Speaker 4: If he can't really lean on his lower body the
- 3:47Speaker 4: way he usually does, can he just be so fired
- 3:49Speaker 4: up with all this criticism going around and just, I
- 3:52Speaker 4: don't know, hype himself up into a good game?
- 3:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so. It's kind of that nothing to
- 3:56Speaker 5: lose mode. He has two World Series in the past
- 3:58Speaker 5: two years. He's on full scholarship, four MVPs. He has
- 4:01Speaker 5: to say to himself, you know, this is it. See
- 4:03Speaker 5: what I can do in this game. Park one. Just
- 4:06Speaker 5: sit on that fastball, as John Smoltz said the other day.
- 4:08Speaker 4: But he can't even catch up to the fastball. If
- 4:10Speaker 4: he physically can't do it, it's a completely different story.
- 4:12Speaker 2: And the numbers don't lie.
- 4:13Speaker 5: But the other side of that is if you sit
- 4:15Speaker 5: someone for an injury in baseball, like football, if you
- 4:18Speaker 5: sit someone in an injury, they get like 13 days off.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 5: If you give them one day off, 24 hours, does
- 4:23Speaker 5: that really change anything with whatever the injury is?
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good point. Okay, so the Dodgers are
- 4:27Speaker 2: down 2-0.
- 4:29Speaker 4: Obviously Milwaukee looks like good shape if you pull back.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Up 2-0.
- 4:33Speaker 4: But how much pressure is there on the Brewers who
- 4:34Speaker 4: have really not been here?
- 4:35Speaker 5: So Gasser versus Snell tonight, Brewers up 2-0. You would
- 4:38Speaker 5: think that the pressure is all on the Dodgers. I
- 4:40Speaker 5: think it's the complete opposite. I think completely the pressure
- 4:43Speaker 5: to win tonight's game is on the Brewers, and here's why.
- 4:46Speaker 5: You've been in the playoffs eight of the last ten years,
- 4:48Speaker 5: eight of the last nine years. Every year you add
- 4:50Speaker 5: more victories. They've gone up in the regular season. This
- 4:53Speaker 5: is it for you guys as far as this season.
- 4:55Speaker 5: You're facing Yamamoto, who you knocked out. You're facing a
- 5:00Speaker 5: diminished Otani, which you may never see again in your lifetime.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Because they're both going to be in the playoffs, the
- 5:05Speaker 5: Brewers and the Dodgers next year. You have this opportunity.
- 5:09Speaker 5: I would throw out the kitchen sink tonight to win
- 5:11Speaker 5: this game because I think it turns really fast. To me,
- 5:13Speaker 5: it's almost like the Cubs in 2016 versus the Dodgers.
- 5:17Speaker 5: They had to get past the Dodgers, and they did so.
- 5:19Speaker 5: But they were up 2-0 at one point, and you're like,
- 5:22Speaker 5: you don't relax. And I'm speaking for Brewers fans here.
- 5:24Speaker 5: If you're a Brewers fan, you're not in a good
- 5:26Speaker 5: mood today. You feel closer to the game. to the title.
- 5:29Speaker 5: And it gets you all churned up. And a loss
- 5:31Speaker 5: is like, oh my God, it's going to collapse.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You know, normally, everything you said makes perfect sense.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Right. But actually watching those two games, it doesn't feel
- 5:38Speaker 4: to me like the Brewers have any reason to feel pressure.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Their bullpen is untouchable. The Dodgers hitters are two for 29.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Is there a single arm coming out of that bullpen
- 5:47Speaker 4: that the Dodgers can hit? And why would that change
- 5:49Speaker 4: in game three? I just don't see it. I don't
- 5:51Speaker 4: think over, Paul, but I don't see the Dodgers having
- 5:53Speaker 4: any options.
- 5:54Speaker 5: But you're talking analytically as someone who's analyzing a series.
- 5:57Speaker 4: You can just watch it. Every time the reliever comes in,
- 6:01Speaker 4: the Dodgers aren't even barely making contact.
- 6:03Speaker 5: On paper, this should be a sweep.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all bullpen.
- 6:06Speaker 5: I sat next to you at the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl,
- 6:08Speaker 5: and when the Eagles were doing well, you were rocking
- 6:11Speaker 5: back and forth like Leo Mazzoni, and you didn't enjoy
- 6:14Speaker 5: any bit of it right until the moment the Eagles won.
- 6:16Speaker 5: And I think that's what it is being a fan.
- 6:18Speaker 5: If you're a Brewers fan right now, you feel closer.
- 6:21Speaker 5: And I'm not going to compare it to 28-3. They're
- 6:23Speaker 5: not there yet. But you feel like if we could
- 6:26Speaker 5: just get by them, We could take care of the Rays.
- 6:28Speaker 5: We could take care of the Guardians. So that's where
- 6:31Speaker 5: I mean they're a must-win.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Okay, last year the Dodgers were down to the Blue
- 6:35Speaker 4: Jays and came back and won. But that Dodgers team
- 6:37Speaker 4: was different than this. Totally different. I just don't see it. And, again,
- 6:41Speaker 4: it's not even just the analytics.
- 6:42Speaker 2: It's your eyeballs.
- 6:44Speaker 4: There is nothing. Once Milwaukee gets in the late innings.
- 6:47Speaker 4: The Dodgers are completely non-threatening. And to reverse course and
- 6:50Speaker 4: all of a sudden become from one to nine effective
- 6:53Speaker 4: on offense, I don't see it happening.
- 6:55Speaker 5: You called it over yesterday. All right, let's get to
- 6:57Speaker 5: some NFL. This is a saucy one. This Giants-Commanders end-of-game situation,
- 7:02Speaker 5: it has a lot of legs. And Micah Parsons, who's
- 7:04Speaker 5: injured for the Packers, has a podcast. And he decided
- 7:07Speaker 5: to throw his hat in the ring on this one.
- 7:09Speaker 5: It's really interesting what he had to say and who
- 7:11Speaker 5: he blames for the end of game with the Commanders.
- 7:15Speaker 7: Jayden daniels probably cost my man dan quitting his job
- 7:18Speaker 7: to be honest with you that's tough to be honest
- 7:21Speaker 7: with you and i like i'm a big jayden daniels
- 7:24Speaker 7: fan but the reality is like he probably cost a
- 7:27Speaker 7: lot of people their jobs this past.
- 7:28Speaker 5: Weekend early in his career.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Wow. I'm not sure about one player on the Cowboys
- 7:35Speaker 4: calling out a Commander's player because they are rivals, but
- 7:39Speaker 4: I think this could be a reality situation here.
- 7:41Speaker 5: I actually like what Parsons had to say because Parsons
- 7:43Speaker 5: is giving you the player's aspect of this. It's like,
- 7:45Speaker 5: Jayden Daniels should know what to do. You know in
- 7:47Speaker 5: that situation, if the play breaks and it's supposed to
- 7:50Speaker 5: be an out pattern or something like that, You don't
- 7:51Speaker 5: run in the middle of the line of scrimmage, just
- 7:53Speaker 5: go down and not get up urgently. No way the
- 7:56Speaker 5: coaching staff prepped you like this. And Parsons says, we're prepared.
- 7:59Speaker 5: I'm prepared as a defensive end in what to do
- 8:01Speaker 5: in late game situations.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Yeah, again, when we talk about this whole situation, I
- 8:05Speaker 4: really need a 30 for 30 or Pablo Torre or
- 8:07Speaker 4: somebody to tell me exactly what happened. And I kind
- 8:09Speaker 4: of blame Dan Quinn for this. Give me the exact play-by-play.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Is it on Jaden Daniels? We're never going to know, Paul.
- 8:16Speaker 5: Yes, you're never going to know, but I'm going to
- 8:17Speaker 5: trust Micah Parsons that Some play was called. Clearly, Daniels
- 8:21Speaker 5: does not think they have a timeout because he didn't
- 8:22Speaker 5: jump up and call one like Chris Webber did.
- 8:24Speaker 2: They had no idea how much time was left. That's true.
- 8:27Speaker 4: It took forever to get the play in, and they
- 8:28Speaker 4: totally screwed up. They lost track of time. And it
- 8:30Speaker 4: wasn't just Jaden Daniels. Did you see anybody else acting originally?
- 8:33Speaker 5: What do you think about player-on-player criticism like this?
- 8:36Speaker 2: Well, it's Micah Parsons.
- 8:37Speaker 5: But Micah Parsons, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot
- 8:40Speaker 5: of people agree with him. I don't know if Jaden
- 8:41Speaker 5: Daniels is the most popular player at LSU, of course,
- 8:45Speaker 5: but generally in locker rooms.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Oh, I don't know.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Jaden Daniels, I mean, all that matters is how is
- 8:50Speaker 4: he viewed in a commander's locker room, and there have
- 8:51Speaker 4: been mixed reports on that. But, I mean, he's a
- 8:55Speaker 4: defensive player. He's supposed to hate the quarterback on the
- 8:57Speaker 4: other team. Micah Parsons always makes comments like this on
- 9:00Speaker 4: all kinds of players. He says more than most analysts do,
- 9:03Speaker 4: so I think you always have to take that with
- 9:05Speaker 4: a grain of salt for him.
- 9:07Speaker 2: But I kind of agree with him, Paul.
- 9:09Speaker 4: I do think this costs Dan Quinn his job. I
- 9:11Speaker 4: think Dan Quinn might play out the string this season.
- 9:14Speaker 2: He might not.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I think there's absolutely no way that this Washington regime,
- 9:18Speaker 4: as we know it now, survives.
- 9:20Speaker 5: It's hard to picture them getting to a playoff level.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Two years ago, they were 12-5. They were in an
- 9:24Speaker 5: NFC title game. We did a poll question on the
- 9:27Speaker 5: Dan Patrick Show a couple days after the season ended
- 9:30Speaker 5: two years ago. Which NFL team is the most promising
- 9:33Speaker 5: going forward? The Commanders won.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Yeah, we really shouldn't have had that answer because they
- 9:38Speaker 4: were old. Remember, they filled in a lot of veterans
- 9:41Speaker 4: on that team, and now they're really old.
- 9:42Speaker 5: But it was based on that they found a superstar
- 9:44Speaker 5: quarterback in Daniels.
- 9:45Speaker 2: But what was the rub on Daniels coming out of
- 9:47Speaker 2: the draft?
- 9:47Speaker 3: Injury.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Injury, and that's been the issue.
- 9:50Speaker 6: You know what?
- 9:51Speaker 2: I have trouble imagining that this Washington team.
- 9:54Speaker 4: I know Dan Snyder's gone, but it feels like the
- 9:55Speaker 4: same problems persist.
- 9:57Speaker 2: All right, let's get a little more positive, Paul, here.
- 9:59Speaker 2: We're not going to be... all down stories, injuries.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens might get their quarterbacks back.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Now, let's talk about your Chicago Bears.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Yeah. Tyson Bajan looked bad last week. Two weeks ago,
- 10:11Speaker 4: he didn't look great either. Looks like Caleb Williams will
- 10:13Speaker 4: be back with his hamstring. What impact could he have?
- 10:16Speaker 5: Well, this is against Atlanta. You think, okay, we could
- 10:18Speaker 5: win this one with Case Keenum or Tyson Bajan. No,
- 10:21Speaker 5: you can't. I mean, you got lucky a couple times.
- 10:23Speaker 5: The Bears are 3-2. Look at this here. They made
- 10:26Speaker 5: the Packers look like they're a playoff team, Tyson Bajan.
- 10:29Speaker 5: Caleb Williams is a different type of player. You've got
- 10:32Speaker 5: to get him back fast. The one thing I would
- 10:33Speaker 5: say is, The Bears being 3-2 with Caleb Williams missing
- 10:37Speaker 5: a chunk of the season is really nice positioning for
- 10:40Speaker 5: the NFC North. Numbers-wise, they're in good shape. That said,
- 10:43Speaker 5: he has to be back on the field because you
- 10:45Speaker 5: don't want to give up an easy one to a
- 10:47Speaker 5: non-conference opponent like the Falcons, who generally aren't a great team.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Well, you never know with Atlanta.
- 10:52Speaker 3: You don't know.
- 10:53Speaker 2: It's a total wild card.
- 10:55Speaker 4: I actually am worried about the Bears because I see
- 10:57Speaker 4: that the Vikings, who are not playing good football, playing
- 11:00Speaker 4: bad offensive football, are now the favorites in the NFC North.
- 11:02Speaker 4: I don't think Chicago can let them get too far ahead.
- 11:06Speaker 5: I do somehow think that the Lions are still going
- 11:08Speaker 5: to come out of all this shining because I know
- 11:10Speaker 5: they don't have much defense, but they still have a
- 11:12Speaker 5: great offense. The Bears, every team in this division has
- 11:15Speaker 5: a big problem. Lions defense, the Bears defense, the Packers injuries.
- 11:20Speaker 5: The Vikings don't really have problems. They don't just have
- 11:23Speaker 5: a lot of strengths.
- 11:24Speaker 4: They have one of the worst offenses numbers-wise in the league.
- 11:27Speaker 4: That sounds like a problem to me.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Yeah, but the defense keeps them alive in games. They're
- 11:31Speaker 5: the reverse of the Bears.
- 11:32Speaker 2: You know what?
- 11:32Speaker 4: Brian Flores, it's a schedule. They're 5-0, mostly because they're
- 11:36Speaker 4: a defense. That schedule will even out eventually, and I
- 11:38Speaker 4: think they come back to earth.
- 11:40Speaker 5: Are you ready to say that the Vikings don't make
- 11:42Speaker 5: the playoffs?
- 11:42Speaker 4: No, I actually said that the other day, but I
- 11:45Speaker 4: just think you're right. The whole division is messed up. Meanwhile,
- 11:47Speaker 4: Lamar Jackson. I don't think they need Lamar Jackson desperately
- 11:51Speaker 4: to come back this week.
- 11:52Speaker 2: They get the Browns. Paul, what's your take?
- 11:54Speaker 5: This is a tough one because if you're the Ravens,
- 11:56Speaker 5: you'd like to give him one more week of rest
- 11:58Speaker 5: because the games after Cleveland. You have the Bengals, the Bills,
- 12:02Speaker 5: the Jaguars, and the Rams. Those are the next four games.
- 12:05Speaker 5: Your season will be decided with Bengals, Bills, Jaguars, Rams.
- 12:08Speaker 5: I'm sorry, Chargers. When we get to Thanksgiving, they'll either
- 12:12Speaker 5: be out of the playoffs or in the playoffs.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Well, they're 4-1.
- 12:15Speaker 4: They have some room to play with.
- 12:17Speaker 5: They could be 1-4 over the next five games based
- 12:20Speaker 5: off this.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Yeah, but then can't Snoop Huntley, the backup, beat Cleveland?
- 12:24Speaker 5: Yes, you would think so. You would think so. I
- 12:26Speaker 5: would leave this to be a Lamar Jackson decision. Because
- 12:29Speaker 5: now if he gets hurt in this game, re-aggravates his injury,
- 12:32Speaker 5: then it's over, Johnny.
- 12:33Speaker 4: I know.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Same thing with Caleb Williams, though. We'll see how that works.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Those teams desperately want their quarterbacks back.
- 12:39Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Coming up next, we'll get into Justin Herbert. There's some
- 12:44Speaker 4: chatter out there that the Chargers might look to trade him.
- 12:47Speaker 4: We'll get into that next.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Not so fast.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Parsons.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:53Speaker 5: I like what he had to say because it was
- 12:55Speaker 5: kind of brutally honest. Usually don't go against each other
- 12:57Speaker 5: like this.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Welcome to Micah Parsons experience.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Yes, he's not scared. Back on Not So Fast, we
- 13:05Speaker 5: have some Pearl off NBC Sports. Midday pick-me-up. A little
- 13:08Speaker 5: snarky one here, Pearl. Ramirez, hot shot.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Oh, no. Why is that the pick-me-up?
- 13:13Speaker 5: He was supposed to pick it up. That's what I'm
- 13:15Speaker 5: told from the back room. Snarky from the back room
- 13:17Speaker 5: with that baseball talk.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Yeah, that was obviously a big play.
- 13:22Speaker 2: We'll get into it later. How much did you kill
- 13:23Speaker 2: Ramirez for that?
- 13:24Speaker 5: Yeah, he kind of like short-hopped it. Anxious to get
- 13:27Speaker 5: to the play at first. Not so fast. A couple
- 13:30Speaker 5: runs come in.
- 13:31Speaker 2: I mean, come on.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I think to blame the whole game on Ramirez, let's
- 13:34Speaker 4: face it, your offense didn't really.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Wake up in that game.
- 13:36Speaker 5: He's been carrying you all season. All right, it's time
- 13:38Speaker 5: for warm takes here. Warm takes on baseball, football, whatever
- 13:41Speaker 5: we got. I'm going to go first, Pearl.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Okay.
- 13:44Speaker 5: Right now, Shohei Otani can't pitch for a number of reasons,
- 13:47Speaker 5: but it's mostly due to injury, and they want to
- 13:48Speaker 5: protect him as a hitter, which makes sense. He's not
- 13:50Speaker 5: hitting that well right now, and it's because of the
- 13:52Speaker 5: injuries he's had. He's having a little bit of a
- 13:55Speaker 5: tough run, but I think for him and the Dodgers,
- 13:57Speaker 5: this should give everybody a clear sign of his future
- 13:59Speaker 5: in baseball. Otani, his future is as a hitter only, right?
- 14:04Speaker 5: He's 32 years old. He's got a lot of good
- 14:06Speaker 5: years left on his contract. And I know giving up
- 14:09Speaker 5: pitching will be tough for him. But you proved your point, man.
- 14:12Speaker 5: You absolutely proved your point. You're one of the most
- 14:14Speaker 5: unique athletes of the past 100 years at any sport.
- 14:17Speaker 5: Four MVPs, global star. Very good pitcher, great hitter. But
- 14:21Speaker 5: now it's time to protect what you do best. In 2024,
- 14:25Speaker 5: you hit. 310 with 54 homers and 59 stolen bases.
- 14:30Speaker 5: I had to double-check those numbers because they're so freaking absurd.
- 14:33Speaker 5: I couldn't believe what he did that season. You know
- 14:35Speaker 5: what he didn't do that season?
- 14:36Speaker 2: Pitch.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Because he had the elbow procedure. So he got to
- 14:39Speaker 5: focus just on hitting. And in that year, 2024,. 310,
- 14:41Speaker 5: 54 homers. 59 stole bases. I know for Otani, who
- 14:47Speaker 5: lives on the reputation of being the only guy, the unicorn,
- 14:51Speaker 5: who pitches really well and hits really well, that's going
- 14:54Speaker 5: to be really tough to give up. But I think
- 14:55Speaker 5: you have to because your legacy is set. And you
- 14:58Speaker 5: are an all-time great hitter. You're an all-time good pitcher.
- 15:02Speaker 5: They don't need you to pitch for them. They need
- 15:03Speaker 5: you to hit 50 homers for them and hit 310
- 15:05Speaker 5: for them. And you can again over the next five
- 15:07Speaker 5: or six seasons. And your legacy will be just fine
- 15:10Speaker 5: because the only person you're compared to in baseball is
- 15:13Speaker 5: is Babe Ruth. You're one of two. You're going to
- 15:16Speaker 5: be fine.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Yeah, Babe quit pitching. He's the Babe Ruth of baseball.
- 15:20Speaker 5: And I read some reports that Babe Ruth was forced
- 15:24Speaker 5: to quit pitching because they didn't want to pay him
- 15:27Speaker 5: Like a two-discipline athlete. Otani's already got his money, and
- 15:30Speaker 5: it's deferred until 2035.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the comparison for Otani is closer to
- 15:34Speaker 4: Barry Bonds in a way, because he can win six
- 15:37Speaker 4: or seven MVPs just as a hitter.
- 15:39Speaker 5: Yeah, and with Barry Bonds, they told him to stop
- 15:41Speaker 5: stealing bases. We don't need you getting hurt going into
- 15:44Speaker 5: second base. We need you hitting 70.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I mean, that's a good point. I'm totally
- 15:48Speaker 4: out of the camp. Don't pitch him anymore. Especially when
- 15:50Speaker 4: you have three or four Cy Young-level pitchers in your room.
- 15:53Speaker 2: You're the Dodgers.
- 15:53Speaker 4: You can afford pitching. You don't need to double up.
- 15:56Speaker 4: All right, I'm going to go to the NFL for
- 15:57Speaker 4: my first warm take. Justin Herbert has had a bad season.
- 16:02Speaker 4: Chargers are 0-5.
- 16:03Speaker 2: There's no doubt about that.
- 16:04Speaker 4: So Adam Schefter on his podcast had an interesting conversation.
- 16:07Speaker 4: He said he was getting calls wondering about what the
- 16:09Speaker 4: trade compensation would be for Justin Herbert if teams called
- 16:12Speaker 4: the Chargers. So Schefter called the Chargers and the Chargers
- 16:16Speaker 4: shut him down immediately. Shutting him down immediately doesn't mean
- 16:19Speaker 4: that they won't trade him. Generally, that's what a team
- 16:21Speaker 4: will always say. In this case, it is absolutely true.
- 16:25Speaker 4: In LA, with the Chargers, they would fire the coach,
- 16:28Speaker 4: fire the OC, fire the GM, switch ownerships, move stadiums.
- 16:33Speaker 2: There is no way they are getting rid of Justin Herbert. One,
- 16:37Speaker 2: he's still a good quarterback.
- 16:38Speaker 4: It's been bad this year, but we've seen it in
- 16:40Speaker 4: the past. Number two, he's a good dude. Everyone likes
- 16:43Speaker 4: having Justin Herbert around. He was at Oregon forever, stayed
- 16:45Speaker 4: an extra year.
- 16:47Speaker 2: It's not like.
- 16:48Speaker 4: A certain quarterback in Philly who had talent didn't get
- 16:50Speaker 4: along with the locker room named Carson Wentz. There is
- 16:53Speaker 4: absolutely no reason for them to get rid of a
- 16:56Speaker 4: guy like Justin Herbert. I am shocked that people are
- 16:59Speaker 4: even talking about compensation. Three first round picks for Justin Herbert.
- 17:03Speaker 4: What are they going to go with? Drew Messamaker or
- 17:05Speaker 4: Darian Menta? Complete unknown at quarterback. I think even if
- 17:08Speaker 4: the Chargers go 2-15 this year, Justin Herbert is just fine.
- 17:12Speaker 4: And hey, that might work out well because that would
- 17:15Speaker 4: bring in Jeremiah Smith.
- 17:16Speaker 2: One more thing about the Chargers.
- 17:17Speaker 4: They hire Mike McDaniel, then they have a running back,
- 17:19Speaker 4: O'Marion Hampton, who they drafted last year, who is not
- 17:22Speaker 4: designed for a Mike McDaniel offense. They have a quarterback,
- 17:24Speaker 4: Justin Herbert, who's 6'6, the exact opposite of Tua, who
- 17:28Speaker 4: mastered Mike McDaniel's offense.
- 17:30Speaker 2: The whole system is not working here.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Now, the only thing that is a foundational piece for
- 17:35Speaker 4: the Chargers is Justin Herbert, so he's not going anywhere.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Wow, there's a lot to get into there. You're talking
- 17:41Speaker 5: about the good dude effect, which rarely does get thrown
- 17:43Speaker 5: at in trade ever.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:44Speaker 5: I see what you're saying. I think this is a
- 17:46Speaker 5: bit of a manufactured story. This is a reporter trying
- 17:48Speaker 5: to create a story where there isn't one.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Well, he's not alone.
- 17:51Speaker 2: There's a lot of chatter.
- 17:52Speaker 5: Right, but it's not based in reality reporting. You're starting
- 17:55Speaker 5: a situation. Would you trade this guy? I don't think
- 17:58Speaker 5: you would trade him because of the fear of him
- 18:00Speaker 5: being successful somewhere else. If you're the guy who somehow
- 18:02Speaker 5: traded Justin Herbert and he went on to recover his
- 18:05Speaker 5: career and win a Super Bowl... You'll be remembered with
- 18:07Speaker 5: that forever. It's like the guy who let Drew Brees
- 18:09Speaker 5: out the door.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Oh, 100%.
- 18:11Speaker 4: I mean, listen, the last trade like this, a quarterback
- 18:14Speaker 4: under 30 who got traded for first-round picks was actually
- 18:16Speaker 4: Jay Cutler back in the day from Denver to Chicago.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Some teams, by the way, Tom Palacero had some teams
- 18:22Speaker 4: that could be calling about. in Miami, instead of going
- 18:25Speaker 4: to the draft, the Jets, the Browns, and the Cardinals.
- 18:29Speaker 4: What interesting, well, what if the Giants say, you know what,
- 18:32Speaker 4: the NFC East is terrible right now. Obviously, Jameis is
- 18:35Speaker 4: not going to get us too far. What if they
- 18:37Speaker 4: offer two first-rounders for Justin Herbert to come in this year?
- 18:39Speaker 5: No, I could see other teams giving that a shot
- 18:41Speaker 5: and kicking the tire, because that's what GMs do.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Might as well call, right? Might as well call.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Might as well call. All right, my next warm take is,
- 18:46Speaker 5: there was this unintentional sports debate this week. Mike Ditka
- 18:50Speaker 5: passed the other day, and This Twitter post off an
- 18:53Speaker 5: interview that Mike Greenberg did at ESPN, if you see
- 18:55Speaker 5: it on the screen, Mike Greenberg had this to say about,
- 18:59Speaker 5: he was larger than life, talking about Mike Ditka. Michael
- 19:02Speaker 5: Jordan was a global icon and certainly beloved in Chicago,
- 19:04Speaker 5: but Mike Ditka was the biggest star in Chicago sports.
- 19:07Speaker 5: That's from Mike Greenberg, who grew up and covered sports
- 19:10Speaker 5: in Chicago. Now, this has been in play for three
- 19:13Speaker 5: days on social media. And it's interesting because, and I'm
- 19:15Speaker 5: not going to have to say the thing, I'm from
- 19:17Speaker 5: Chicago and you don't know because you're not from there,
- 19:19Speaker 5: but there is some of that to this. Now, it's semantics.
- 19:23Speaker 5: It's semantics. The words beloved, biggest star, global icon. Michael
- 19:27Speaker 5: Jordan is revered in Chicago. He'll always be Chicago's, but
- 19:30Speaker 5: he started as Chicago's, then became national, then he became worldwide.
- 19:34Speaker 5: He became a global brand, and he just happened to
- 19:36Speaker 5: play sports in Chicago. I can tell you for a
- 19:39Speaker 5: fact the difference between Mike Ditka and Michael Jordan. You
- 19:42Speaker 5: wouldn't see Michael Jordan at a restaurant or hanging out
- 19:45Speaker 5: and have access to him. He was not present. You
- 19:47Speaker 5: wouldn't see him between games and things like this. Mike
- 19:50Speaker 5: Ditka stayed in Chicago, didn't leave when he was done
- 19:52Speaker 5: with his career, and Ditka was accessible. Fans could see him.
- 19:56Speaker 5: The other thing about Ditka in Chicago is He had
- 19:58Speaker 5: the look. He had the tone. I know he's from Pittsburgh,
- 20:01Speaker 5: but people in Chicago think he's from Chicago. The Bears
- 20:03Speaker 5: will always, by the way, be the number one team
- 20:05Speaker 5: in Chicago. Michael Jordan's run with the Bulls was unbelievable.
- 20:09Speaker 5: For eight years, Michael Jordan leased that town. He didn't
- 20:12Speaker 5: own the town. He leased it. And then it went
- 20:14Speaker 5: back quickly to being a Bears town and Cubs and
- 20:16Speaker 5: Bulls and so on and so forth. So this isn't
- 20:19Speaker 5: a diminishing of Michael Jordan. It's recognizing the difference between
- 20:22Speaker 5: a global icon who is the greatest athlete to ever
- 20:25Speaker 5: play sports in Chicago, hands down. And Mike Ditka, who's
- 20:29Speaker 5: Chicago's guy, a local guy, who delivered the local fans
- 20:33Speaker 5: the title they wanted with the Chicago Bears. Now, my
- 20:36Speaker 5: caveat to this entire thing is one of the things
- 20:38Speaker 5: Mike Greenberg said is the most beloved athlete in Chicago
- 20:41Speaker 5: sports history. It's neither Jordan nor Ditka. It really is.
- 20:45Speaker 5: I'm not being a sycophant here. It's Walter Payton. Beloved
- 20:48Speaker 5: is a whole different category. But Ditka was an icon.
- 20:51Speaker 5: People dress like him. People say his sayings. We talked
- 20:54Speaker 5: about SNL. So this is not a slight of Michael Jordan.
- 20:57Speaker 4: Wait, I don't understand, though. Didn't Greenberg say the biggest star?
- 21:01Speaker 4: So where is Walter Payton in Greenberg's mind? I think
- 21:04Speaker 4: he's saying Ditka is a bigger figure than Payton.
- 21:08Speaker 5: I think what he's trying to say is the persona
- 21:10Speaker 5: of Mike Ditka. was all-encompassing in Chicago. Sweetness was more
- 21:14Speaker 5: of a low-key guy, a quiet guy, not very accessible. Again,
- 21:18Speaker 5: Michael Jordan, you would never see out and about. You
- 21:20Speaker 5: could walk into a restaurant in Chicago back in the day,
- 21:22Speaker 5: and there'd be Mike Ditka smoking a cigar, holding court.
- 21:26Speaker 5: He was accessible, even though he's a superstar.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Let me ask you a couple other contenders. Ernie Banks, Mr. Cub,
- 21:31Speaker 2: in that conversation, a little old school?
- 21:33Speaker 5: A little before my time, but I think there's a
- 21:35Speaker 5: difference between beloved and the greatest athlete, because like The
- 21:38Speaker 5: greatest Cub of all time, or of recent time, might
- 21:40Speaker 5: be Ryan Sandberg. But Anthony Rizzo walks on water in
- 21:44Speaker 5: that town.
- 21:44Speaker 2: What about Sosa? Sosa?
- 21:47Speaker 6: Next feeling.
- 21:47Speaker 5: But if I were going to say, I'm not from Philadelphia,
- 21:50Speaker 5: but I know you. In my mind, Dr. J is
- 21:52Speaker 5: the end-all, be-all of Philadelphia. And I don't know if
- 21:55Speaker 5: I'm right or not.
- 21:56Speaker 2: He's the one guy you don't boo.
- 21:58Speaker 4: I mean, Allen Iverson, though. was more of a national
- 22:00Speaker 4: figure and a local figure. So Allen Iverson, I think,
- 22:03Speaker 4: defined an entire generation for people. If you're a millennial,
- 22:08Speaker 4: Allen Iverson was the most important athlete to so many.
- 22:11Speaker 4: So he wasn't really a Philly guy. He was a
- 22:13Speaker 4: national guy.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Got it, got it.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Kind of like Jordan.
- 22:15Speaker 4: A Philly guy, I feel more like Jason Kelsey or somebody.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Who really embraces the local.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Yeah, somebody who goes down the shore and pounds beers
- 22:24Speaker 4: and eats cheese sticks.
- 22:25Speaker 2: No, Mike Schmidt was not well-beloved.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Really?
- 22:27Speaker 5: See, that's where we got to chop this up town
- 22:29Speaker 5: by town.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Yeah, no.
- 22:30Speaker 4: And then in New York, by the way, where we
- 22:33Speaker 4: are closely right now, is it Derek Jeter?
- 22:36Speaker 5: Well, but he is an icon. He is more beloved
- 22:39Speaker 5: than Scott Brocious or Paul O'Neill.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know because if you become too big
- 22:43Speaker 4: a star, really interesting conversation. All right, I'm going to
- 22:47Speaker 4: go a little different direction for my next warm take.
- 22:49Speaker 4: Big game this weekend, Indiana versus Ohio State. And Jeremiah Smith,
- 22:53Speaker 4: in a lot of people's mind, as a Heisman, just
- 22:55Speaker 4: sewn up. There is a guy who nobody is talking about,
- 22:59Speaker 4: and I can't figure out why. Josh Hoover, if Indiana
- 23:01Speaker 4: wins this game, the transfer quarterback, will shoot up this board.
- 23:06Speaker 4: He's a 10 at plus 4,800. I've also seen him
- 23:10Speaker 4: at 5,500. He was top three in the beginning of
- 23:13Speaker 4: the season. Everyone thought, oh, he could be the next
- 23:15Speaker 4: Fernando Mendoza and lead Indiana to an undefeated record. Now,
- 23:18Speaker 4: Indiana hasn't looked great, but let me share some stats
- 23:21Speaker 4: with Josh Hoover. 17 touchdowns, zero picks. Now, I'm not
- 23:25Speaker 4: a math major, Paul, but that's pretty darn good. Exactly.
- 23:28Speaker 4: I was sharing this with the backroom guys at Dan
- 23:30Speaker 4: Patrick Show. No one knew about these stats.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Does it have to do with the Nebraska game and
- 23:34Speaker 5: him kind of not being that, or the team not
- 23:36Speaker 5: being that great?
- 23:36Speaker 4: Yeah, Northwestern and Nebraska. Northwestern was great, but the guy
- 23:41Speaker 4: has not thrown a piggy through 13 interceptions last year. Now,
- 23:44Speaker 4: what will happen, Paul, if Indiana, who's home, and a
- 23:47Speaker 4: three-and-a-half-point dog beats Ohio State?
- 23:50Speaker 5: He's going right to the top three.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Yeah. And what happens to Jeremiah Smith? Now, here's my
- 23:54Speaker 4: Jeremiah Smith question. We'll do our Heisman Watch later in
- 23:57Speaker 4: the week. But if Smith loses, that'll be two losses
- 24:00Speaker 4: on Ohio State. Then I think his candidacy.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Is a little bit different.
- 24:03Speaker 5: I mean, not so fast. Quarterbacks get dinged with losses.
- 24:06Speaker 5: Wide receivers don't. Jeremiah Smith will be in New York.
- 24:09Speaker 5: I would bet a limb on this. And Josh Hoover, though,
- 24:12Speaker 5: this is the opportunity of a lifetime. You take down
- 24:14Speaker 5: Ohio State. I think that's the noon Eastern game. All
- 24:17Speaker 5: the eyeballs are there.
- 24:17Speaker 4: The other thing, too, is I think people are having
- 24:19Speaker 4: trouble wrapping their heads around Josh Hoover because of the
- 24:22Speaker 4: Indiana thing. I know they want a title, but we're
- 24:24Speaker 4: still not used to.
- 24:25Speaker 2: It in our DNA and our bones. We don't expect
- 24:28Speaker 2: Indiana to be elite.
- 24:29Speaker 5: You're a thousand percent right. I can't come to grips
- 24:31Speaker 5: with one Heisman winner for Indiana in my lifetime. Two?
- 24:34Speaker 5: I mean, that's like going to the moon twice.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Yeah, imagine if I told you five years ago, I
- 24:38Speaker 4: think Indiana is going to be a potential back-to-back national champion.
- 24:41Speaker 2: You'd be like, oh, what are you talking about? Bobby
- 24:43Speaker 2: Knight's got to come back. No, I mean football.
- 24:45Speaker 5: Yeah, I would have drug tested you. All right, let's
- 24:46Speaker 5: stick with college football. Our college football play of the year.
- 24:50Speaker 5: It's a running tally. You keep going. Let's go back
- 24:53Speaker 5: to the first one. Now, holding court was the Harvard squad.
- 24:58Speaker 5: Harvard had the Hail Mary. Let's take a quick look
- 25:00Speaker 5: at it. Here we go, Harvard.
- 25:07Speaker 2: It was a very smart play, Paul.
- 25:08Speaker 5: Yeah, heady play.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:10Speaker 5: Just like they scripted up. You catch, I pitch.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Yeah, took out my Colgate Raiders.
- 25:16Speaker 5: And this future senator takes it into the end zone. Okay,
- 25:19Speaker 5: there it is.
- 25:19Speaker 2: That's pretty hard to beat.
- 25:21Speaker 5: Now, Jeremiah Smith, who you just mentioned, he had this
- 25:23Speaker 5: catch that was pretty silly. Let's take a look at
- 25:25Speaker 5: this one. That was a hot sauce pass behind him.
- 25:34Speaker 5: I know he's got gloves, but that doesn't look humanly possible.
- 25:37Speaker 4: No, but the bar is so high for this guy, Paul,
- 25:40Speaker 4: that I don't know how impressed I am.
- 25:42Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, that's just a Saturday.
- 25:43Speaker 5: Did he make it look too easy doing that Paul catch?
- 25:45Speaker 2: Yes, and his whole season has made it look too easy.
- 25:48Speaker 5: So he loses this because of him.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I cannot advance him.
- 25:52Speaker 4: If it was just some random guy, if a Harvard
- 25:54Speaker 4: receiver did that, I'd be impressed. Jeremiah Smith, that's what
- 25:56Speaker 4: he does.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Harvard advances. Good for those guys catching a break. All right,
- 26:00Speaker 5: coming up, much more baseball chatter, and we're going to
- 26:04Speaker 5: read some minds later in the show.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Stick around.
- 26:06Speaker 5: This is Not So Fast, Paxton Perloff. I love town-by-town
- 26:10Speaker 5: athlete rankings, like beloved, disliked. It's fascinating, like a local opinion.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Matt Rushmore is always good.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's
- 26:23Speaker 4: Paul Papps. Of course, NBC Sports Now and Peacock.
- 26:26Speaker 2: All right, Paul.
- 26:28Speaker 4: We've got the Raising Guardians tied at 1-1.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Dodgers down 2-0.
- 26:31Speaker 4: To break down the rest of the MLB playoffs, we're
- 26:34Speaker 4: bringing in Kevin Franzen from SiriusXM. You can hear Kevin
- 26:38Speaker 4: on MLB Network Radio's ALCS pregame shows with Danny Wexelman
- 26:42Speaker 4: and Jim Duquette three hours before each game. All right, Kevin,
- 26:45Speaker 4: let's jump right into it. I'm going to ask about
- 26:48Speaker 4: the NLCS. If you were running the Dodgers, would you
- 26:52Speaker 4: play Shohei Otani?
- 26:54Speaker 3: Hell yeah.
- 26:55Speaker 1: I like just his presence in the lineup. Like who
- 26:58Speaker 1: else are you going to put? I mean, if you
- 26:59Speaker 1: put just way in there, I mean, he's awesome. We
- 27:01Speaker 1: know that, but it's an unproven guy. And at some point,
- 27:05Speaker 1: if it clicks, you know, for show a, with the
- 27:07Speaker 1: bat speed that he's got, like, I still think with
- 27:09Speaker 1: the bat speed, it says that he's healthy. There's certain
- 27:12Speaker 1: things that his lower half has told me he's off.
- 27:14Speaker 1: So if they get it right, you know, I think
- 27:18Speaker 1: it's like beyond desperate to get it. You know, when
- 27:21Speaker 1: you're down two games to take out one of the
- 27:23Speaker 1: greatest hitters that we've seen.
- 27:25Speaker 5: Kevin, you played Major League Baseball. You were a hitter.
- 27:27Speaker 5: When you have an injury, hitting is a precise thing,
- 27:29Speaker 5: like a golf swing or a pitch. How can that
- 27:31Speaker 5: throw you off kilter? And what is Otani trying to
- 27:35Speaker 5: do to compensate?
- 27:37Speaker 3: Well, again, there's so many different things.
- 27:40Speaker 1: So I tore my Achilles in 2008. And after that,
- 27:43Speaker 1: it was my front foot, my stride leg, right where
- 27:46Speaker 1: I land.
- 27:47Speaker 3: And it changed balance.
- 27:49Speaker 1: It changed the way I was, you know, going after things.
- 27:51Speaker 1: It changed my timing of, of when I start and
- 27:55Speaker 1: subconsciously do right. Like it's not all the, you're thinking
- 27:59Speaker 1: about in the moment. Cause when we're not there, you're competing.
- 28:01Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, sometimes you're late
- 28:03Speaker 1: on things. I just think he's in a weird spot
- 28:06Speaker 1: and easy to say like, well, what's a weird spot.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Weird spot is when, you know, Everything feels off. You
- 28:12Speaker 1: feel like, oh, I got my foot down early. I'm
- 28:15Speaker 1: ready to go, ready to launch. And you can see it.
- 28:18Speaker 1: He's about ready to launch. That ball's right next to
- 28:21Speaker 1: the plate. There's so many different things mentally that you
- 28:25Speaker 1: go through when it comes to hitting and slumps.
- 28:28Speaker 3: I just think he's in a slump.
- 28:30Speaker 1: If he's come out and said that there was an injury,
- 28:33Speaker 1: that's one thing. Everyone else could say there's an injury,
- 28:35Speaker 1: but if he hasn't said it, I'm going off of
- 28:38Speaker 1: it's a slump.
- 28:40Speaker 4: I mean, what about the rest of the lineup where
- 28:41Speaker 4: the Dodgers are hitting 193 in the postseason?
- 28:44Speaker 2: It's not just Otani. I hate to say this. They
- 28:47Speaker 2: look a little kind of old to me. Or maybe, like,
- 28:49Speaker 2: we're seeing the downside of this rivalry. I'm sorry. That's
- 28:53Speaker 2: how it looks so far.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:56Speaker 2: Well, I.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I'm very hesitant on calling those guys old in general.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I want it more directed towards how good the Brewers are.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Because I feel like the more we talk about the
- 29:08Speaker 1: struggles of the Dodgers, it's taken away from what and
- 29:12Speaker 1: how good the Brewers truly are. Uh, you know, covering the,
- 29:17Speaker 1: you know, being a TV analyst for the Nats and
- 29:19Speaker 1: doing every game and, and, you know, Nats went into, uh,
- 29:23Speaker 1: American family field this year and swept them. And then
- 29:25Speaker 1: we saw him later on in the year and they,
- 29:28Speaker 1: you know, blew the doors off of the Nats two games.
- 29:30Speaker 1: And you're going, that's a different team. Like that's, they,
- 29:33Speaker 1: they compliment each other. Like I, I, I laugh because
- 29:36Speaker 1: I always think about like Bill Belichick when he says complimentary,
- 29:38Speaker 1: complimentary football.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Right.
- 29:40Speaker 1: We gotta play complimentary football you always hear that from
- 29:42Speaker 1: him you can it resonates and the next thing you
- 29:45Speaker 1: know you're going well that's what pat murphy basically says
- 29:47Speaker 1: they play complimentary you know baseball the way that they
- 29:50Speaker 1: go about things and it's a great brand of baseball
- 29:52Speaker 1: it's a great way to do it And it just
- 29:55Speaker 1: makes you take your eye off of them at times
- 29:57Speaker 1: because you're like, oh, well, the other team's struggling, you know?
- 29:59Speaker 1: And I feel like their pitching is that good. They
- 30:04Speaker 1: got so many different arms and so many different looks.
- 30:06Speaker 3: They got power. They got everything.
- 30:07Speaker 1: And then on the offensive side, they just– I mean, they–
- 30:12Speaker 1: It's death by a thousand paper cuts, and so you
- 30:15Speaker 1: kind of put your guard down, and guess what?
- 30:16Speaker 3: They'll pop you.
- 30:17Speaker 1: So it's a hell of a team, and I would
- 30:20Speaker 1: more focus on that more than it is the struggles
- 30:23Speaker 1: of the Dodgers, because I think it's because of how
- 30:25Speaker 1: good the Milwaukee Brewers truly are.
- 30:26Speaker 5: Yeah, let's talk about one of those pitchers, Jacob Mizorowski.
- 30:29Speaker 5: He's throwing more pitches, it seems like, over 100. than
- 30:32Speaker 5: under 100. And I know you haven't been out of
- 30:34Speaker 5: the game that long, but when you were playing, like 101,
- 30:37Speaker 5: 102 was kind of the max, it seemed like. What's
- 30:40Speaker 5: the difference, you're a big league hitter, between like 97
- 30:42Speaker 5: and 103 when you're in the box?
- 30:47Speaker 1: I think 97-103 is not that different. Like 98-103, not
- 30:51Speaker 1: that different. It's that gym from 95 up. There's certain guys. Now,
- 30:58Speaker 1: the velocity is never the big issue in my mind.
- 31:02Speaker 3: We could hit.
- 31:03Speaker 1: We could always hit. We could hit. The worst major
- 31:06Speaker 1: league hitters are better than most just average Joes. And
- 31:11Speaker 1: that's a fact. It's the extension part. It's the fact
- 31:13Speaker 1: that he is just dropping it right there on you.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Like you have no time to react. Everyone thinks about
- 31:18Speaker 1: velocity and it's like, okay, but it's where it's released. And,
- 31:21Speaker 1: and he's taken away the timing for, for you to,
- 31:24Speaker 1: to make those decisions.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Right. And so now you're like, I have to start earlier.
- 31:29Speaker 3: And it's way off of what earlier thing you're in
- 31:32Speaker 3: your mind, what, what getting your foot down means.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Is like, You know what I'm excited about the next
- 31:37Speaker 1: time that he starts? Is this going to be on
- 31:39Speaker 1: normal stays rest, right? Both times have been on nine.
- 31:42Speaker 1: And it's not been good. It's almost like he's had
- 31:44Speaker 1: too much time. And I feel like we saw him
- 31:46Speaker 1: throughout the year with regular rest, you know, five days,
- 31:49Speaker 1: whatever you want to call regular rest for him. And
- 31:52Speaker 1: we saw normal. We saw what was normal. Normal was
- 31:55Speaker 1: sitting 101, 102, and just, you know, peppering both sides
- 31:59Speaker 1: of the plate, top of the zone, all this stuff.
- 32:01Speaker 3: He's been out of sorts based on, I think, more
- 32:03Speaker 3: than anything, just too much rest.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Wow.
- 32:05Speaker 2: All right, Kevin, let's turn to the ALCS.
- 32:08Speaker 4: I've seen weather in Cleveland, possible rain Thursday and Friday,
- 32:11Speaker 4: then cold on Saturday.
- 32:13Speaker 2: How will that affect both?
- 32:15Speaker 8: Come on.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Let's talk.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Can we be honest here? How is it going to
- 32:19Speaker 3: affect me?
- 32:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:21Speaker 3: That's what I'm talking about.
- 32:23Speaker 2: I saw 49 on Saturday as a high.
- 32:24Speaker 4: Yeah, and I know you're a California kid, so that's
- 32:28Speaker 4: not great.
- 32:28Speaker 1: You know what? I think it's going to actually be
- 32:33Speaker 1: a factor for both. One thing is, you had the
- 32:37Speaker 1: Cleveland play the other day against the White Sox, right,
- 32:39Speaker 1: in the rain.
- 32:40Speaker 3: But it was 63, 64, right? It wasn't cold, cold.
- 32:44Speaker 1: The day before that, Ron Darling and I was talking
- 32:46Speaker 1: to him, and he was saying, it was howling in. Like,
- 32:49Speaker 1: it was like just the wind is such a different deal.
- 32:52Speaker 1: You guys, you know, being from Chicago, you understand.
- 32:54Speaker 3: That whole thing. Wind is not fun.
- 32:57Speaker 1: But I think it's going to play a factor, especially
- 32:59Speaker 1: because they are indoor. One's an indoor team. And you
- 33:03Speaker 1: get used to that.
- 33:04Speaker 3: But this is.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Man, this series in general is awesome. Two great baseball teams.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Really good baseball team. If you can't sell that, right? Like,
- 33:13Speaker 1: we always want to talk about stars and big markets
- 33:15Speaker 1: and all that stuff.
- 33:16Speaker 3: Why not just talk about great baseball? Like, in a
- 33:19Speaker 3: team in.
- 33:20Speaker 1: The Rays that have done it for so long that
- 33:21Speaker 1: I think it's as vital for, you know, I know
- 33:24Speaker 1: I'm in the minority on this, but the way the
- 33:27Speaker 1: Rays have done it has been great.
- 33:28Speaker 3: We get that whole thing. I need to see them
- 33:29Speaker 3: win something. What do they want? You know, and for
- 33:33Speaker 3: this to be great, I want to see him win
- 33:35Speaker 3: it because.
- 33:35Speaker 1: That says something. You know, we can always talk about Moneyball.
- 33:38Speaker 1: What did Moneyball do?
- 33:40Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:40Speaker 3: Moneyball was a great movie for people and a book.
- 33:43Speaker 5: I do want to ask you last night about the
- 33:45Speaker 5: error by Ramirez at third place, at third base. When
- 33:47Speaker 5: I saw that play, it was kind of a mid-hopper
- 33:50Speaker 5: where it kind of ate him up a little bit.
- 33:52Speaker 5: But he didn't need to get the first that fast.
- 33:54Speaker 5: Is that a playoff, not the yips, but like I'm
- 33:58Speaker 5: all charged up move?
- 34:00Speaker 1: No, so right off the bat, who I was standing
- 34:02Speaker 1: with in that moment, like with Jim Duquette and Danny West,
- 34:06Speaker 1: when I was like, the moment it came out, I
- 34:07Speaker 1: was like, oh no, because he was.
- 34:09Speaker 3: A step behind the base. Like step behind the baseline.
- 34:12Speaker 3: No man's land. Ben Williamson, he was in no man's land.
- 34:15Speaker 1: And as a third baseman playing that, it is like literally,
- 34:18Speaker 1: that is the, people go, what do you miss about,
- 34:20Speaker 1: what don't you miss about the game? And I'm like,
- 34:22Speaker 1: that play would be exactly it. Because it's, third base
- 34:26Speaker 1: is such a reactionary spot, right? In the moment, especially
- 34:30Speaker 1: in the big leagues, Ben Williams can be run, too.
- 34:32Speaker 1: The moment you take that half step, you have your
- 34:36Speaker 1: half step off, you're done.
- 34:38Speaker 3: And you get put in no man's land. It's almost
- 34:40Speaker 3: like you become a catcher.
- 34:42Speaker 1: In that case, it was a catcher trying to get
- 34:44Speaker 1: a high hopper, and the next thing you know, it
- 34:46Speaker 1: goes right underneath you.
- 34:47Speaker 3: It was off the bat, I knew it. It was like, oh, God.
- 34:50Speaker 3: And I said it audibly, and they looked at me like,
- 34:53Speaker 3: what'd you do?
- 34:53Speaker 1: I was like, because that's just one that if you
- 34:57Speaker 1: don't react right, And I say that because it's a reaction.
- 35:00Speaker 3: So are you wrong with the reaction?
- 35:02Speaker 2: No.
- 35:03Speaker 3: But you get put in that spot because of how
- 35:04Speaker 3: your eyes see it in that moment.
- 35:06Speaker 1: And I feel like, yeah, I think it intensifies with
- 35:09Speaker 1: the playoff situation, with the atmosphere that you got going.
- 35:11Speaker 1: I think Jose Ramirez, you know, he would tell you like, oh,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I should have had that. But I'm like, that's almost
- 35:16Speaker 1: like a 50-50 ball based on where he started, where
- 35:19Speaker 1: he was starting.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Yeah. And you know what?
- 35:21Speaker 5: He won't do that again. Before we get you out
- 35:23Speaker 5: of here, I know you got to get ready for
- 35:24Speaker 5: the game. There's a thing we do here called such
- 35:26Speaker 5: thing as a dumb question. We didn't play baseball. We
- 35:28Speaker 5: didn't come close to playing baseball. You played for a
- 35:30Speaker 5: long time. Okay, we never get to see the clubhouse
- 35:33Speaker 5: during the game. They don't show it. Do players, let's
- 35:36Speaker 5: say you're a pitcher with a day off, or let's
- 35:37Speaker 5: say you were pinch hitting one day. Can you go
- 35:40Speaker 5: into the clubhouse and eat a full meal during the game?
- 35:43Speaker 5: Is there that level of food in the clubhouse?
- 35:46Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, you can, but if you get caught.
- 35:50Speaker 3: It's going to be a fight. Kevin, I don't understand.
- 35:53Speaker 5: The food, the food, the food's available, but you, you can,
- 35:55Speaker 5: you know, yeah, you have a kitchen.
- 35:56Speaker 3: It's a cool kitchen. It's a pool.
- 35:57Speaker 1: It's like a restaurant nowadays. Like it's a restaurant in there. Uh,
- 36:01Speaker 1: and there's snacks, there's beautiful snacks in there. You know
- 36:04Speaker 1: what that back when I was playing, this is like, I,
- 36:07Speaker 1: I never, I hate saying that too. So back when
- 36:09Speaker 1: I played, back when I played, uh, Let's just say
- 36:12Speaker 1: the nutritionists were not around. So, you know, you go in,
- 36:16Speaker 1: you get something to eat real quick, and you get
- 36:19Speaker 1: housed with a little hot dog maybe at a time
- 36:21Speaker 1: if you're, you know, starving. But I'm going to be honest.
- 36:25Speaker 1: I tend to get my snacks and go into my
- 36:28Speaker 1: locker real quick and, oh, I'm looking for something.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Eat it, go, leave.
- 36:32Speaker 5: Wolf down a hot dog real quick. Good job on you.
- 36:34Speaker 4: All right, well, Kevin, good luck with the travel and
- 36:37Speaker 4: the weather in Cleveland. Enjoy the rest of the playoffs.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Thank you for the time.
- 36:40Speaker 3: Well, I appreciate you guys having me on, man.
- 36:42Speaker 5: That was a lot of fun, having him get us
- 36:43Speaker 5: ready for the playoffs.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Paul, that sounds amazing, by the way. A full restaurant.
- 36:47Speaker 2: I can't believe.
- 36:48Speaker 5: I love the idea of a clubhouse. I got to
- 36:50Speaker 5: go into one clubhouse once during an active game. It
- 36:53Speaker 5: was the San Francisco Giants, and Barry Zito was back there.
- 36:55Speaker 5: Barry Zito was making a sandwich. Like, he would make
- 36:58Speaker 5: it at your house. He was, like, spreading it, getting
- 37:00Speaker 5: the lettuce and cutting it nicely. And he wasn't pitching
- 37:02Speaker 5: that day.
- 37:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:03Speaker 5: And he goes, yeah, I'm making myself a nice sandwich.
- 37:05Speaker 5: And the spread was unbelievable.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Unbelievable. Oh, yeah. No, you're getting me hungry. All right.
- 37:09Speaker 4: Coming up on Not So Fast, we're going to hear
- 37:11Speaker 4: from Joey Votto on the Dan Patrick Show.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Interesting comments on the future of Shohei Otani. That's next.
- 37:16Speaker 2: Not So Fast.
- 37:18Speaker 5: But, see, I bet you can't, like, cut a piece
- 37:19Speaker 5: of cake and walk into the dugout with it.
- 37:21Speaker 3: You've got to stay back.
- 37:22Speaker 2: That'd be bad.
- 37:22Speaker 3: That'd be bad.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Probably.
- 37:28Speaker 3: How does Los Angeles turn this around? Well, they turn
- 37:33Speaker 3: this around by benching Ohtani.
- 37:35Speaker 9: And then I think that possibly ends the era with
- 37:39Speaker 9: Shohei Ohtani in Los Angeles.
- 37:41Speaker 3: I think it's the beginning of the end. It's an
- 37:43Speaker 3: odd thing to say.
- 37:45Speaker 9: I know I'm seeing so far into the future, but
- 37:47Speaker 9: you think if you're that player and you're being told...
- 37:51Speaker 9: we don't trust you. We're going to hand this off
- 37:53Speaker 9: to somebody else. If you have a stretch of time
- 37:55Speaker 9: where you're not going well, even though you're, you're fighting
- 37:57Speaker 9: through an injury, you lose faith in the organization. You
- 38:02Speaker 9: think back to all the efforts you put in, all
- 38:04Speaker 9: the things that you earn, but then down to nothing.
- 38:08Speaker 3: If they do not win this game, quite obviously the
- 38:10Speaker 3: series is over.
- 38:11Speaker 9: I see the series going seven, but it's, it's going
- 38:14Speaker 9: to be dependent on Shohei Otani doing his thing and
- 38:17Speaker 9: doing Shohei Otani things.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Okay.
- 38:19Speaker 9: But you would bench him. No, I was a star
- 38:24Speaker 9: player and I couldn't stand being benched. I had plenty
- 38:28Speaker 9: of stretches where I wasn't unwell and I fought through
- 38:31Speaker 9: things and I figured out ways to compete. And I
- 38:35Speaker 9: think that's Shohei's responsibility now. He's standing in the batter's
- 38:38Speaker 9: box now. As a former player, if you're in your
- 38:41Speaker 9: uniform in the batter's box, you are healthy. You're telling
- 38:45Speaker 9: us you are healthy. There's no excuses. There's no I
- 38:48Speaker 9: was this or I was that. As long as you're
- 38:52Speaker 9: on the roster, in the lineup, you have an obligation
- 38:54Speaker 9: to perform or to ask to come out.
- 38:57Speaker 5: Back on Not So Fast Pass from Perloff NBC Sports.
- 39:00Speaker 5: That's a fascinating answer by Votto. He was saying if
- 39:03Speaker 5: you bench Otani, you risk ruining his relationship with the franchise.
- 39:06Speaker 5: The franchise, not the team. Forever. And he's under contract.
- 39:09Speaker 5: He can't walk or anything like that. But he's saying
- 39:11Speaker 5: it would be that much of a slight to do
- 39:13Speaker 5: that in a playoff series to say, we don't trust
- 39:16Speaker 5: you because of the past three weeks. That it could
- 39:18Speaker 5: be a ruining, he said, that was his words, a
- 39:21Speaker 5: ruining of Otani.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Right. That's why I think the Dodgers have to frame
- 39:23Speaker 4: this around your health. Just say, listen, we can tell
- 39:26Speaker 4: you're not healthy. If you bench him for health reasons,
- 39:29Speaker 4: it's a lot different. than benching him for performance reasons.
- 39:31Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a fascinating answer. And then even though
- 39:33Speaker 5: Votto said at the end, I was a star player.
- 39:35Speaker 5: I didn't like being benched. You've got to trust me
- 39:37Speaker 5: that I'm going to get out of it. That's a real,
- 39:39Speaker 5: that's a quandary. And I think Dave Roberts probably went
- 39:41Speaker 5: in with really kid gloves and just said to Otani,
- 39:44Speaker 5: how you feeling? And see if he took the ball
- 39:47Speaker 5: and said, whatever is best for the team, Skip, like
- 39:50Speaker 5: where the words aren't actually said.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Well, Otani, I believe, said it's okay to move me
- 39:54Speaker 4: down in the lineup. So he is a team first
- 39:56Speaker 4: guy despite his big contract. But they worked so hard
- 39:59Speaker 4: to get him there in L.A. I just don't see him,
- 40:02Speaker 4: even if they bench him, I don't see him wanting
- 40:04Speaker 4: to get out of Dodger Blue.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Why would he do that?
- 40:06Speaker 5: I don't think he'd be reactionary like that. But Joey Votto,
- 40:08Speaker 5: he knows the business.
- 40:09Speaker 2: Yeah, he could be right.
- 40:10Speaker 5: I did wonder for a second, would you go the
- 40:12Speaker 5: opposite way with Otani and move him back up in
- 40:14Speaker 5: the lineup? Say, look, we trust you so much. We're
- 40:16Speaker 5: going to shake things up in the opposite direction and
- 40:18Speaker 5: lead off with you tonight. That's what I was thinking. Like,
- 40:20Speaker 5: why don't you just go?
- 40:21Speaker 2: All right, lean into it.
- 40:22Speaker 5: Lean into it. No pun intended, but lean into the cut.
- 40:25Speaker 4: I feel like the Dodgers are trying to say, we're
- 40:27Speaker 4: going to will you into being good again. But I
- 40:30Speaker 4: remember a couple of years ago or a few years
- 40:31Speaker 4: ago when he was holding his shoulder in the World Series.
- 40:33Speaker 4: He really didn't do much in that World Series either.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Yeah, walked a lot.
- 40:36Speaker 4: Well, yeah, he made an impact. And right, he's not
- 40:38Speaker 4: doing that now. He's certainly not stealing bases. He's not
- 40:41Speaker 4: doing all the Otani things. I agree with one thing
- 40:43Speaker 4: he said. They need Otani to be his old self.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Otherwise, they're going home.
- 40:47Speaker 5: Another great guest on the Dan Patrick Show today was
- 40:49Speaker 5: Al Michaels, our old buddy, formerly of NBC Sports, now
- 40:52Speaker 5: on Amazon. Albino talked about Mike Ditka, and he knows
- 40:56Speaker 5: stories about everybody. Here's Albino on Mike Ditka.
- 40:59Speaker 3: He was great.
- 41:00Speaker 2: And, you know, he took no prisoners.
- 41:04Speaker 8: Mike Ditka was a true, true legend and a guy
- 41:08Speaker 8: who was, everybody wants to say, a one-off.
- 41:11Speaker 3: In a way, he was. And, of course, you know,
- 41:13Speaker 3: the Ricky Williams thing.
- 41:14Speaker 8: And then when he decides to have a lot of
- 41:15Speaker 8: fun and coming out there in the wedding dress and
- 41:17Speaker 8: all of that. But he was a good guy to
- 41:20Speaker 8: be around because something was always going to be memorable
- 41:24Speaker 8: when you left Mike Ditka.
- 41:25Speaker 4: Well, it's interesting to me because Al Michaels, of course,
- 41:27Speaker 4: worked with Madden. He knows NFL characters. And I could
- 41:30Speaker 4: just see the two of them digging into a steak
- 41:32Speaker 4: in a restaurant.
- 41:32Speaker 5: Yeah, like Al seems like a low-key guy. Ditka seems
- 41:35Speaker 5: like if you just chew the steak like crazy. But
- 41:37Speaker 5: if you want stories, it's one of my favorite things
- 41:40Speaker 5: on the DP show is when Al Michaels starts riffing.
- 41:42Speaker 5: Because his memory is so good and so clear and
- 41:45Speaker 5: such detail, it's fascinating.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I got to be honest, Paul, that
- 41:49Speaker 2: might be your dream.
- 41:50Speaker 4: I remember one time at Dan Patrick's show, we set
- 41:52Speaker 4: up a table where you and Al Michaels were having steak.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Imagine if you could get Dick at that table.
- 41:56Speaker 5: We were going to do a show called Steak Night
- 41:58Speaker 5: in Almerica, where Al Michaels sits around eating steak, drinking whiskey.
- 42:02Speaker 5: with maybe former athletes or media, and just telling stories.
- 42:05Speaker 5: I'm telling you, that should still happen.
- 42:06Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely. I mean, that was your fantasy. Al wasn't
- 42:10Speaker 4: as into it, as I recall, though he did like
- 42:12Speaker 4: to say. All right, let's get into the NFL play
- 42:14Speaker 4: of the season. Now, we do this, the play of
- 42:16Speaker 4: the season, it's a King of the Mountain format, where
- 42:19Speaker 4: last week's play has to compete with this week's play
- 42:22Speaker 4: to see who stays with the King of the Mountain.
- 42:24Speaker 4: All right, so last week, and it seems like it
- 42:26Speaker 4: was long ago, Afton Chisholm III The Patriots caught a
- 42:31Speaker 4: key touchdown here to beat the Bills. It wasn't just
- 42:34Speaker 4: how great a play this was, a one-handed catch. It
- 42:36Speaker 4: was super impactful and a win the Patriots needed. So
- 42:40Speaker 4: Afton Chisholm III with a pretty good contender there. But
- 42:44Speaker 4: he's going up against arguably the NFL's best tight end,
- 42:48Speaker 4: Trey McBride of the Cardinals.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Let's see what Trey has in store for us here, Paul.
- 42:52Speaker 5: This catch is freakish. He taps, taps, taps, and holds
- 42:55Speaker 5: his feet. Holds his feet the entire time. His arm
- 42:57Speaker 5: is being grabbed by the other guy. He gets his
- 42:59Speaker 5: arm out. He brings it to his chest and gets
- 43:01Speaker 5: the call. I was afraid that they were going to
- 43:04Speaker 5: wave that one off and say he didn't have control,
- 43:06Speaker 5: but they did this one, and that means touchdown.
- 43:09Speaker 4: Okay, athletically, that was unique. In all words, you saw
- 43:11Speaker 4: the score there. It was 45-20 Detroit. That was a
- 43:15Speaker 4: garbage-time touchdown.
- 43:16Speaker 2: Does that count?
- 43:17Speaker 5: But we're giving the aesthetic of the play, not necessarily
- 43:20Speaker 5: the situation of the play. I'm going Trey McBride because
- 43:22Speaker 5: that catch is nutty.
- 43:23Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, you convinced me. The catch was better,
- 43:26Speaker 4: although the moment was not quite the same.
- 43:28Speaker 5: All right, coming up next, constructive criticism. Good job by
- 43:31Speaker 5: Trey McBride. Constructive criticism and we read some minds right
- 43:35Speaker 5: here on Not So Fast. Stick around. I feel bad
- 43:39Speaker 5: for Efton Chisholm I and II because they're boy.
- 43:42Speaker 4: Yeah, no, Efton III is really overwhelming them. You feel
- 43:46Speaker 4: bad that he's no longer our enemy? All right, we're
- 43:49Speaker 4: back on Not So Fast. We have a new segment
- 43:51Speaker 4: called Mind Reader.
- 43:52Speaker 5: Look at this graphic.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:54Speaker 5: That's awesome.
- 43:54Speaker 2: High end.
- 43:55Speaker 4: So Paul and I will get into the minds of
- 43:57Speaker 4: some NFL figures.
- 43:59Speaker 2: I've got to start it here, Paul.
- 44:01Speaker 4: What is Commanders Coach Dan Quinn really thinking about his quarterback,
- 44:06Speaker 4: Jaden Daniels?
- 44:07Speaker 5: Oh, I have to do this thing? How do we
- 44:09Speaker 5: go from 12-5 in the NFC title game to me
- 44:14Speaker 5: maybe losing my job because you couldn't execute a simple
- 44:17Speaker 5: clock play game? properly. Now, that's what I'd be thinking. Like,
- 44:21Speaker 5: I can't believe I thought I was going to get
- 44:22Speaker 5: a contract extension. Now I might be fired. That's what
- 44:24Speaker 5: I think he's thinking.
- 44:25Speaker 2: So he's thinking you screwed us.
- 44:27Speaker 5: You screwed us because we did everything right and you
- 44:29Speaker 5: didn't do what we asked you to do. Because I
- 44:31Speaker 5: think that's what happened.
- 44:32Speaker 2: All right, I go to you.
- 44:33Speaker 5: The Eagles have a general manager named Howie Roseman. You're
- 44:35Speaker 5: very aware of him. What does he think? What's going
- 44:38Speaker 5: through his mind about Jalen Hurts' future?
- 44:40Speaker 2: There are four things going through his mind.
- 44:41Speaker 3: Really?
- 44:42Speaker 4: Two of them are first rounders in 2028, and the
- 44:44Speaker 4: other two are second rounders in 2028.
- 44:46Speaker 2: You've been beating the drum.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Howie Roseman always fantasizes about the next quarterback. He's like
- 44:51Speaker 4: one of those serial daters. He just wants to move
- 44:54Speaker 4: on to the next one. I guarantee that he is
- 44:57Speaker 4: looking at the quarterback scenario and saying Jalen Hurts is great,
- 45:00Speaker 4: but I want to move on because he's always moved
- 45:02Speaker 4: on in the past. It's not necessarily an indictment of Hurts,
- 45:05Speaker 4: but he is setting it up to really reboot at
- 45:08Speaker 4: that position.
- 45:08Speaker 5: Yeah, that makes sense. You've been talking about this. I
- 45:10Speaker 5: could see it. They probably think the Eagles is a franchise.
- 45:13Speaker 5: We got the best work out of Jalen Hurts. He
- 45:15Speaker 5: cost us some money on the back end, not so
- 45:17Speaker 5: much at the front end. Why not look about the future?
- 45:19Speaker 5: And they're not preparing for this draft. The following draft
- 45:22Speaker 5: is what you're saying.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they might be pretty high up in
- 45:25Speaker 2: this draft.
- 45:25Speaker 4: They could end up being a top 15 pick because
- 45:27Speaker 4: it looks like with all the injuries, they're not going
- 45:29Speaker 4: to make the playoffs, or at least they have.
- 45:31Speaker 3: A harder road.
- 45:33Speaker 2: But 2028, just all those trades is lining up perfectly.
- 45:35Speaker 5: All right, here's the next one, Pearl. I'm going to
- 45:37Speaker 5: go back to you again. What is Justin Herbert thinking
- 45:41Speaker 5: about Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniels?
- 45:44Speaker 4: Oh, I think Justin Herbert is secretly resentful of all
- 45:47Speaker 4: the Jim Harbaugh hype talk. Jim Harbaugh keeps telling everybody,
- 45:51Speaker 4: you're the greatest quarterback in the history of the world.
- 45:54Speaker 4: And meanwhile, I go out there and I struggle because
- 45:56Speaker 4: I have no O-line. And everyone's asking me, why aren't
- 45:59Speaker 4: you the greatest quarterback of all time? That was my
- 46:02Speaker 4: coach who said that, not me. So I think Justin
- 46:04Speaker 4: Herbert is thinking, just stop, Jim Harbaugh. Just stop doing that.
- 46:08Speaker 4: And Mike McDaniel... Call some better players.
- 46:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you're right. You're setting the table for
- 46:12Speaker 5: me to be underwhelming by saying I'm the greatest of
- 46:14Speaker 5: all time.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Okay, I'll go to you.
- 46:16Speaker 4: What is the NFC North really thinking about the 5-0 Vikings?
- 46:20Speaker 2: So get in the head of the other three teams.
- 46:23Speaker 5: How do they keep doing this? That's what I'd be
- 46:24Speaker 5: thinking about the Vikings. It seems like every year they
- 46:27Speaker 5: go out to this great start. Two years ago, 13 wins.
- 46:30Speaker 5: Four years ago, they had 13 wins. How are the
- 46:32Speaker 5: Vikings doing this with an injured quarterback, backup quarterback? and
- 46:35Speaker 5: not a lot of star power. How do they do
- 46:37Speaker 5: this every year?
- 46:38Speaker 2: I know how they do it.
- 46:39Speaker 4: They're playing the worst teams in the NFL on a
- 46:40Speaker 4: weekly basis. I mean, listen, look, they beat the Dolphins 15-10.
- 46:45Speaker 4: That's worse than a loss.
- 46:46Speaker 5: That's worse than a loss.
- 46:47Speaker 4: And yeah, they just have not done much of anything.
- 46:50Speaker 4: The Saints, it looks like the Saints are going to
- 46:52Speaker 4: be bad. The Bears was in a monsoon. And Green
- 46:55Speaker 4: Bay is completely injured by week one. They haven't proven anything.
- 46:58Speaker 4: And look, they get another easy game against the Colts.
- 47:01Speaker 4: So I think the rest of the division is licking
- 47:04Speaker 4: their chops. I think the Bears and the Lions, we
- 47:06Speaker 4: can get this team. They're not that good.
- 47:08Speaker 5: That is mind readers on Not So Fast. I actually
- 47:10Speaker 5: crushed that. Let's get to some constructive criticisms, questions from you,
- 47:13Speaker 5: tips from you. Here we go. Here's the first one, Pearl.
- 47:17Speaker 5: This is from... Kurt Young, what NFL rule should we change? Mine,
- 47:22Speaker 5: adopt CFL, settle for a field goal. You don't get
- 47:24Speaker 5: to kick off. That's a little wonky. I love the CFL.
- 47:28Speaker 5: I would say the NFL rule change is more of
- 47:29Speaker 5: a rule tweak. When a guy goes to tackle a
- 47:32Speaker 5: quarterback and he lands on him and he's trying to
- 47:35Speaker 5: put his hand down, you've got to realize 300 pounders
- 47:38Speaker 5: cannot in the moment decide to protect a person whilst
- 47:42Speaker 5: trying to take their head off give them a little
- 47:44Speaker 5: room to land on a quarterback this won't happen but
- 47:46Speaker 5: i wish.
- 47:46Speaker 4: It would okay the one that i would change is
- 47:49Speaker 4: everyone complains about when you fumble out of the end
- 47:51Speaker 4: zone oh the other team gets the ball at the
- 47:52Speaker 4: 20 how about you get the ball at the 20
- 47:54Speaker 4: or some other thing it's just such a massive penalty
- 47:58Speaker 4: because you're at the one yard line or the one
- 48:00Speaker 4: inch line and And all of a sudden, not only
- 48:01Speaker 4: do you not get the touchdown, you lose possession.
- 48:04Speaker 2: It feels just too much for me.
- 48:06Speaker 4: I thought, by the way, Paul, you were going to go,
- 48:07Speaker 4: because you're such a college guy, one foot in instead
- 48:10Speaker 4: of two feet in. You've been lobbying secretly for that
- 48:12Speaker 4: for a while.
- 48:12Speaker 5: We were double scoring. All right, quickly, let's get one
- 48:14Speaker 5: more constructive criticism in here. From Robert Huesco, a good
- 48:17Speaker 5: fan of the show, is Aaron Rodgers a top five quarterback?
- 48:21Speaker 5: Does he mean now, like currently in this league?
- 48:23Speaker 2: Or all the time?
- 48:24Speaker 5: Well, to be fair, he's playing very well the past
- 48:26Speaker 5: three weeks, and that's all you could ask for. I
- 48:29Speaker 5: wouldn't go that far. It's like if you were saying
- 48:31Speaker 5: who would you have for the rest of the season,
- 48:33Speaker 5: he's not top five.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Yeah, is Jalen Warren a top five running back? It's
- 48:36Speaker 4: a more relevant question to Pittsburgh because they've got to
- 48:39Speaker 4: rely on.
- 48:39Speaker 6: The run game.
- 48:39Speaker 5: All right, before we wrap it up and get you
- 48:41Speaker 5: ready for what's going on tonight, the feel good. It's
- 48:43Speaker 5: time for the feel good. Now the guys in back
- 48:46Speaker 5: always know dogs equal feel good. Look at this fella.
- 48:49Speaker 5: Look at this good boy.
- 48:52Speaker 4: All right, are we being gratuitous here? Are we just
- 48:54Speaker 4: showing a puppy dog?
- 48:55Speaker 5: Yeah, this is pure pandering to fans of dogs. Look
- 48:59Speaker 5: how happy that fella is.
- 49:01Speaker 2: My mother sends out clips like this. This is a
- 49:04Speaker 2: sports show. We're not doing kittens and doggies, are we?
- 49:07Speaker 5: Absolutely. That is a way to ingratiate ourselves to America.
- 49:10Speaker 5: That dog was having a great time with a stick.
- 49:12Speaker 5: You don't have to pay for sticks.
- 49:13Speaker 4: It was just a dog golden in the stick.
- 49:14Speaker 5: We're playing that one again tomorrow. is so good. It's
- 49:17Speaker 5: already booked for what's coming on tomorrow's show.
- 49:19Speaker 2: All right. All right.
- 49:21Speaker 5: Coming up tomorrow, we're going to get you ready. But
- 49:22Speaker 5: real quick, Pearl, who you got tonight?
- 49:25Speaker 2: Oh, I'm going Brewers.
- 49:27Speaker 5: You're going Brewers. I'm going Brewers as well. Trying to
- 49:29Speaker 5: close this out or at least get to game three.
- 49:31Speaker 3: All right.
- 49:31Speaker 5: Stick around tomorrow. Dan Padgett show 9 a.m. Eastern on
- 49:34Speaker 5: NBC Sports. Then hang with us. Not so fast. Pabst
- 49:37Speaker 5: and Perla.
- 49:38Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 49:38Speaker 5: Enjoy the football. Enjoy the baseball.
