- 2:12Speaker 3: a pristine day here in the valley, sunny, pleasant, warm,
- 2:14Speaker 3: but not oppressive. High' is it going to be the
- 2:17Speaker 3: upper eighties, Some scattered storms tonight mainly after midnight, low's
- 2:19Speaker 3: of the upper sixties. Tomorrow, heavy rain and storms, low
- 2:22Speaker 3: eighties for highs, and then some scattered showers and storms
- 2:25Speaker 3: on Friday weekend, though actually looking pretty good, only a
- 2:28Speaker 3: slight chance of rain, but pretty nice overall, a tempts
- 2:31Speaker 3: in the upper seventies to low eighties. You can download
- 2:33Speaker 3: the Metro News television at to follow Brian Hughes and
- 2:35Speaker 3: his team of meteorologists and follow along on social media
- 2:38Speaker 3: as well. Bringing to the show now, our good friend
- 2:41Speaker 3: Millie Snyder. How you doing.
- 2:42Speaker 5: I'm doing great. How are you, Dady?
- 2:43Speaker 3: I'm doing fine. Thank you.
- 2:45Speaker 5: I'm so happy to be here whenever I had that chance.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Well, we we like avenue here. Thank you, and your
- 2:51Speaker 3: and your fans love having you here as well.
- 2:53Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Because no you're got a few we normally have two
- 2:59Speaker 3: to any of them get I get constant text, you
- 3:02Speaker 3: know afterwards, saying that how much they like you so? Well,
- 3:08Speaker 3: what were you doing in You're doing TV now of
- 3:10Speaker 3: course you're queen of all media.
- 3:13Speaker 5: You're shocking, you're shocking. No, no, actually I went to
- 3:17Speaker 5: wsa Z. In fact, the program is going to be
- 3:19Speaker 5: air tomorrow on the eleven o'clock in the morning with
- 3:24Speaker 5: She's a lovely hostess. Her name is Susan Nichols and
- 3:28Speaker 5: she's great. So with me came one of my members
- 3:32Speaker 5: in a dear friend, Fred Albert, and also one of
- 3:37Speaker 5: our members. Her name is Carmela Crawford. And one of
- 3:41Speaker 5: the reasons is that Carmela sadly has Parkinson's and the
- 3:46Speaker 5: Mediterranean lifestyle is the recommended way to eat, not just
- 3:50Speaker 5: for people with Parkinson's, but you'd be surprised how many
- 3:54Speaker 5: maladies occur in people's lives. And the doctor says the
- 3:58Speaker 5: best way to eat is the clean, fresh, wholesome food
- 4:01Speaker 5: of Mediterranean because it is not a diet. We don't
- 4:04Speaker 5: count calories, and you know, it's just a beautiful way
- 4:09Speaker 5: to eat. And it's been around much longer than all
- 4:12Speaker 5: of our ages put together. There are apparently. I don't
- 4:18Speaker 5: mean apparently, it's not apparent. There are approximately eleven to
- 4:23Speaker 5: fifteen countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, and all of
- 4:27Speaker 5: those people don't have a lot of disease. They live
- 4:31Speaker 5: for a long time, and there's been some studies. Why
- 4:34Speaker 5: are these people living so long? And there's nothing wrong
- 4:38Speaker 5: with them, and it's because of the quality of the
- 4:41Speaker 5: way they eat. They eat fresh, clean food, no chemicals,
- 4:46Speaker 5: no processing, no fast food, and they eat better than
- 4:50Speaker 5: the rest of the world. And that's the idea behind
- 4:54Speaker 5: people joining our Mediterranean group that we have available here
- 4:58Speaker 5: in Charlestow.
- 5:00Speaker 3: I think it's important to note that we talk about
- 5:03Speaker 3: quality of life too, because I mean, it's not uncommon
- 5:06Speaker 3: these days for people to live to be, you know,
- 5:09Speaker 3: in their late eighties, early to mid nineties. But you
- 5:12Speaker 3: want to have a good quality of life too, And
- 5:14Speaker 3: that's one of the things I've learned from you is
- 5:16Speaker 3: people that follow this diet not only do they live
- 5:18Speaker 3: I mean, it's one thing to live long, but to
- 5:20Speaker 3: have a good quality of life as well.
- 5:22Speaker 5: And as many people know, because I came here when
- 5:25Speaker 5: I was twenty seven and I've been here forever. Almost
- 5:29Speaker 5: next month, I'm going to be eighty four, and no
- 5:32Speaker 5: one believes that I'm eighty four because I don't look
- 5:35Speaker 5: like I'm eighty four.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And what day's your birthday on again?
- 5:37Speaker 5: October nineteenth.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Well, that's that's two months from now. Oh, I forgot
- 5:41Speaker 3: about September Dewiterranean may also cause brain fog. I'm kidding.
- 5:45Speaker 3: It's okay, it's okay, because my birthday is in September.
- 5:48Speaker 5: So I was in September. What is that twenty third? Oh? Wow,
- 5:51Speaker 5: September twenty that's the day back in nineteen sixty nine
- 5:55Speaker 5: that we open weight watchers September twenty third, nineteen sixty nine.
- 6:01Speaker 5: It was an a remarkable thing.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I wasn't born yet, but I was born the following year.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Oh you're born in seventy yeah. Oh, so you're getting old.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, I'm.
- 6:12Speaker 5: So complimentary this morning. Yeah, but Mediterranean is the way
- 6:16Speaker 5: to go. And you know, one of the things that
- 6:18Speaker 5: I worry about, and that's so many, hundreds of thousands
- 6:22Speaker 5: of people are taking the shots for weight loss, and
- 6:25Speaker 5: we're beginning to see some very disparaging news coming up
- 6:28Speaker 5: around the use of the shots because people don't want
- 6:32Speaker 5: to continue the medication and they haven't learned how to eat,
- 6:36Speaker 5: they're gaining their weight back. And I can tell you
- 6:40Speaker 5: with no fudging of my words, because I don't fudge anyway. No,
- 6:46Speaker 5: it's not worth it. It's got too much sugar in it anyway.
- 6:50Speaker 5: And sugar is something I can eat occasionally, but it's
- 6:53Speaker 5: not a big thing like it used to be. But
- 6:56Speaker 5: the thing is that if you don't learn how to eat,
- 6:58Speaker 5: what have you put in place to support you moving forward?
- 7:03Speaker 5: Once you stop taking that? You know, in these years,
- 7:06Speaker 5: I can tell you, honestly, nothing is sadder then watch
- 7:11Speaker 5: a person have the success of weight loss only to
- 7:14Speaker 5: turn around and gain that back. It hurts and be
- 7:18Speaker 5: it physically and physically and yeah, physically for sure, but
- 7:23Speaker 5: it's also personally demoralizing. And that's why I want to
- 7:27Speaker 5: keep saying this message. Let's teach people how to eat
- 7:31Speaker 5: and celebrate the fact that good, wonderful food is the
- 7:34Speaker 5: way to go.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Texas Milly, I've been eating Mediterranean for a few months now,
- 7:39Speaker 3: and I've lost weight and feel better. But I noticed
- 7:41Speaker 3: the other day that I've not been sick for quite
- 7:43Speaker 3: a while. I was for sure if you had noticed
- 7:45Speaker 3: any correlation between that, or if it's just coincidence.
- 7:48Speaker 5: No, it's not coincidence, because a lot of people enjoy
- 7:52Speaker 5: much better wellness when they're eating clean, fresh food. I'm
- 7:56Speaker 5: happy to hear that because that simply puts another stamp
- 7:59Speaker 5: of approval that if you don't feel well, there's a
- 8:02Speaker 5: reason for it, because you're putting some foreign bodies into
- 8:05Speaker 5: your system. You know, there are chemicals, there are preservatives
- 8:10Speaker 5: in the food, and our body doesn't know what the
- 8:12Speaker 5: heck to do with it. So it causes problems when
- 8:16Speaker 5: why don't we feel good, why don't we sleep well?
- 8:19Speaker 5: Because there's stuff going into our bodies through our food
- 8:23Speaker 5: source that the body says, I don't like this, and
- 8:26Speaker 5: I'm going to give you some aggravation as a result.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Here's a person who is saying the same thing. I've
- 8:31Speaker 5: been eating Mediterranean now for a while and i haven't
- 8:34Speaker 5: been sick. Wow, whoever you are, please make yourself known.
- 8:39Speaker 5: That's incredible. Well, and i' we're happy for you.
- 8:42Speaker 3: And I think too, And I think I brought this
- 8:44Speaker 3: up and I may have brought this up with you
- 8:45Speaker 3: when you were on the show once before. When it
- 8:48Speaker 3: comes to things like bread, if you get fresh and
- 8:51Speaker 3: I know bread is not always the best thing in
- 8:52Speaker 3: the world to eat.
- 8:53Speaker 5: I'm buy bread is fine for Mediterranean if you buy
- 8:56Speaker 5: the right kind of That's what I was going to say,
- 8:58Speaker 5: just don't buy white bread.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Well, but I I have my wife and I talked
- 9:01Speaker 3: about this once before that she bought a loaf of
- 9:04Speaker 3: bread and and and it was not It wasn't a
- 9:08Speaker 3: white bread, but it was one of the major packages,
- 9:11Speaker 3: you know, one of the major companies, and it somehow
- 9:14Speaker 3: got We have a bread box, and it somehow got
- 9:16Speaker 3: pushed to the back. She got it out. She goes, oh,
- 9:18Speaker 3: I forgot about this bread. And she pulled it out
- 9:20Speaker 3: and it wasn't green. It should have been green.
- 9:23Speaker 5: But that's a worry right there, because it because what
- 9:27Speaker 5: is in it?
- 9:27Speaker 3: What sort of preservative is in it that made it
- 9:29Speaker 3: not turn green after a month.
- 9:31Speaker 5: Years ago I heard this story. I'll try to make
- 9:33Speaker 5: it short because it's part and parcel with what your
- 9:35Speaker 5: wife found in the bread box. There was nothing wrong
- 9:38Speaker 5: with the bread. Somebody went out and bought like little
- 9:42Speaker 5: little Debbie cakes and bringing their groceries in from the house,
- 9:47Speaker 5: something fell out of the bag in the back of
- 9:50Speaker 5: the car and they never they forgot about it. Well,
- 9:54Speaker 5: two days later they found it in the car and
- 9:57Speaker 5: it was imperfectly soft, ready to eat place because it
- 10:01Speaker 5: has so many preservatives and it tastes good in your mouth.
- 10:06Speaker 5: But that's the end of the story.
- 10:09Speaker 3: So talking to Millie Snyder today aland showing five any
- 10:12Speaker 3: line is broad to bared by Morgan to Morgan, America's
- 10:14Speaker 3: largest injury law firm.
- 10:15Speaker 5: If you're injured, visit for thepeople dot com.
- 10:17Speaker 3: What have you been up to lately? I mean, I
- 10:18Speaker 3: know you said you're on tail, you are doing the
- 10:21Speaker 3: TV thing yesterday, but what else have you been doing
- 10:24Speaker 3: other than the classes? Because I know you're always up
- 10:26Speaker 3: to something. You're always doing something.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Well, not a lot, you know. I try to keep
- 10:30Speaker 5: myself busy doing this, that and the other, but just
- 10:33Speaker 5: making plans for getting into the fall season. There's some
- 10:37Speaker 5: happy things happening in the family. There's a big wedding
- 10:40Speaker 5: in Georgetown, and I'm looking forward to going to that
- 10:45Speaker 5: and being able to catch up with family after. You're
- 10:47Speaker 5: gonna have a piece of cake maybe because by the way,
- 10:51Speaker 5: dessert is allowed on Mediterranean but not a half a
- 10:54Speaker 5: cake piece. You know, did you eat with a fork?
- 10:57Speaker 5: And you know and yes, of course I.
- 11:00Speaker 3: A little sliver, and that's what I want because I
- 11:02Speaker 3: have you on every month, and I want to people
- 11:04Speaker 3: to make sure that people realize that with this Mediterranean
- 11:07Speaker 3: it's any sort of a wellness plan or healthy eating whatever.
- 11:12Speaker 3: It's not that you can't have these things. You just
- 11:13Speaker 3: can't have it all the time. You can have a
- 11:15Speaker 3: piece of cake.
- 11:17Speaker 5: There are some people who have. I know a guy
- 11:20Speaker 5: in Clarksburg who has to have a whole cake every day.
- 11:24Speaker 5: He is addicted to sugar and it has affected his movement.
- 11:29Speaker 5: He the man lives in pain twenty four to seven
- 11:33Speaker 5: because sugar is playing havoc with his body. But in
- 11:36Speaker 5: his mouth, that cake that's sweet is heavenly.
- 11:41Speaker 3: So what can you substitute? Because a lot of people
- 11:45Speaker 3: have a sweet tears substitute well, our friend Colonel Ron Hughes,
- 11:48Speaker 3: for example, I'm gonna throw Ron under the bus. Ron
- 11:50Speaker 3: Ron never met the sweets that he didn't like. I'm
- 11:52Speaker 3: more of a meat and cheese eater myself.
- 11:54Speaker 5: I'm readily I could identify with you.
- 11:57Speaker 3: I could take or leave the sweets. I've always been
- 11:59Speaker 3: that way, to be honest with you. But for people
- 12:02Speaker 3: that have that sweet tooth and people that think I
- 12:04Speaker 3: have to have something sweet, you would say, what.
- 12:08Speaker 5: Dave, We have so many beautiful alternatives, many desserts that
- 12:12Speaker 5: you can make that are Mediterranean recipes, and also to
- 12:16Speaker 5: enjoy fresh fruit. And I'm not just talking about an
- 12:19Speaker 5: apple or an orange. I'm talking about berries and the
- 12:22Speaker 5: things that you can do to them. I make a
- 12:25Speaker 5: granola in my house with oatmeal and almonds and maple syrup.
- 12:31Speaker 5: It is absolutely I'm going to bring it to you
- 12:33Speaker 5: next month.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I wish you would. It is the big birthday present
- 12:36Speaker 3: for me.
- 12:37Speaker 5: That's right. Well it's September nineteenth, right, twenty third, Well
- 12:41Speaker 5: I was close. Nineteen's my anniversary, so nineteen's my birthday.
- 12:44Speaker 5: The twenty third is your birthda.
- 12:46Speaker 3: But that's your birthdays in October.
- 12:47Speaker 5: That's right. Thank you all right for reminding me.
- 12:50Speaker 3: But I'm got all this taking down Ryan who whenever?
- 12:52Speaker 5: But yeah, then you can you can give me that
- 12:55Speaker 5: recording back. But anyway, I'd like to bring you some
- 12:58Speaker 5: my granola. But we make some of the best desserts
- 13:01Speaker 5: and very easy recipes to follow using fruits and other combinations,
- 13:06Speaker 5: and a lot of people are amazed when they try
- 13:09Speaker 5: those recipes. I had no idea it was going to
- 13:12Speaker 5: be this good. So there are so many alternatives. But
- 13:16Speaker 5: when you say to somebody you can't have sugar, they
- 13:18Speaker 5: become panic because they have something that resembles a bit
- 13:23Speaker 5: of an addiction to sugar.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Texas, merely, are there pet friendly Mediterranean meals that are
- 13:29Speaker 3: safe for them and easy to.
- 13:30Speaker 5: Make pet friendly?
- 13:32Speaker 3: Pet friendly?
- 13:33Speaker 5: Well, not off the top of my head, but I'm
- 13:35Speaker 5: sure that they would love to have well Yoya giving
- 13:39Speaker 5: a dog salmon and sardines and certain vegetables. My goodness, yes,
- 13:46Speaker 5: there are dogs who absolutely love to have the real deal, Texas.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Can you or I'm sorry, Dave, you can substitute monk
- 13:56Speaker 3: fruit with.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Well Monk fruit is another erythritol product, Okay, and it's
- 14:05Speaker 5: we don't even want to call it artificial sweetener, but
- 14:08Speaker 5: it is derived from a fruit, from a fruit base,
- 14:13Speaker 5: and you can use stevia. You can use monk fruit
- 14:17Speaker 5: and other products that are made in the form of
- 14:21Speaker 5: a erythritol which is replacing real sugar. I don't want
- 14:25Speaker 5: to call it artificial because erythritol actually grows in stevia,
- 14:32Speaker 5: the source. It grows in tropical climates and then you
- 14:35Speaker 5: take that and then it's the manufacturing is just drying
- 14:38Speaker 5: it out and making it down into a powder. But
- 14:41Speaker 5: we can't call stevia artificial sweetener. It's another type of sweetener,
- 14:46Speaker 5: just not a sugar sweetener. Now you can do some
- 14:49Speaker 5: incredible things with stevia erythritol monk fruit. So there are many,
- 14:54Speaker 5: many possibilities.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Willie Snyder remind people where and when we meet it.

- 15:25Speaker 5: very modest. We love you to come and find out
- 15:29Speaker 5: how to take better care of youself.
- 15:30Speaker 3: We had another text here It says my favorite is
- 15:33Speaker 3: date syrup. It's the sugar substitute date syrup.

- 18:02Speaker 3: family get together, a class reunion, whatever the case may be.

- 18:08Speaker 3: Dave Allen showing five Any Line browncho parted by the

- 18:19Speaker 3: Good friend Adam Harris is in the studio. How you doing, man,
- 18:21Speaker 3: little friend, How you doing?
- 18:23Speaker 7: I got your rock in the five Street shirt there,
- 18:25Speaker 7: just trying to stay on brand.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Okay, uh so, uh appreciate you stopping by. Thank you man.
- 18:31Speaker 3: And tomorrow night we're gonna do a real special in
- 18:35Speaker 3: at five Street, our sister station ninety eight seven, a
- 18:37Speaker 3: mountain wild, wonderful classic rock. We are there. Generally speaking,
- 18:41Speaker 3: it kind of varies, but it's like the you know,
- 18:43Speaker 3: first and third. Generally speaking, first and third thursdays of
- 18:46Speaker 3: the month, we do a thing called Thursday Thursday. Steve
- 18:49Speaker 3: Animal and Shockley and others, myself and others are over
- 18:52Speaker 3: at five Street, but you're going to be hanging out.
- 18:55Speaker 10: We're tag teaming yeah, tax you and I would say yeah,
- 18:57Speaker 10: the Mountain and Mountain Stage, and we had a good
- 19:00Speaker 10: time in January when we were partnering up together.
- 19:02Speaker 7: We had a great time, had some live music.
- 19:04Speaker 10: We're not gonna do the live music thing this week
- 19:06Speaker 10: just because John has a lot of other stuff planning
- 19:08Speaker 10: to start. Actually well, John Ingram is on the road,
- 19:11Speaker 10: but then also John Qivee Street has some plans going
- 19:15Speaker 10: forward for the weekend and so but what we're gonna
- 19:17Speaker 10: do is listen to some music. We've got some free giveaways.
- 19:20Speaker 10: I know the Mountain always does that. We're gonna give
- 19:22Speaker 10: away some tickets to Mountain Stage this Sunday, and then
- 19:24Speaker 10: we're also talking a little bit about our Mountain Stage's
- 19:27Speaker 10: forty third anniversary show, which is in December, which seems
- 19:30Speaker 10: like a long time from now, but it actually isn't.
- 19:32Speaker 7: All right, but we just announced.
- 19:34Speaker 10: That Fred Tackett and Scott Schirard of Little Feet are
- 19:37Speaker 10: going to do a special acoustic appearance this December, December
- 19:41Speaker 10: sixth on Mountain Stage, and those tickets we're gonna put
- 19:43Speaker 10: them on sale Thursday at five o'clock, so you can
- 19:45Speaker 10: get them online or swing by Thirsty Thursday and we're
- 19:49Speaker 10: gonna have a.
- 19:49Speaker 7: Setup right there.
- 19:50Speaker 10: You can even avoid some of the ticket fees if
- 19:52Speaker 10: you want to get your tickets for December direct.
- 19:55Speaker 7: Yep.
- 19:55Speaker 3: And I'll tell you what, man, I am a huge
- 19:57Speaker 3: Little Feed fan. I discovered Little Feet, I guess. I
- 20:01Speaker 3: was working into Classic Rock station in Ohio and we
- 20:05Speaker 3: did a lot of Little Feet. I was really not
- 20:06Speaker 3: that familiar with them, and then I got the waiting
- 20:09Speaker 3: for Columbus album Nice and of course Dixie Chicken where
- 20:14Speaker 3: the Dixie Chicks got their names right, Chicken Willing. I mean,
- 20:18Speaker 3: I can do a killer karaoke version of Willing Well.
- 20:20Speaker 3: It's not very good, but I have fun will Well.
- 20:23Speaker 10: And that's one reason I wanted to come on and
- 20:25Speaker 10: talk with Steve Animal, because I know a lot of
- 20:27Speaker 10: those classic rock listeners you know, have a great affinity
- 20:29Speaker 10: for Little Feet, and you know god Fred Tackett Man,
- 20:32Speaker 10: I've just been looking at his discography and he's on
- 20:35Speaker 10: a ton of albums. He's one of the most recorded
- 20:39Speaker 10: studio musicians of all time. A lot of people don't
- 20:41Speaker 10: know that, but he's also a recording artist and obviously
- 20:44Speaker 10: has been playing guitar I believe with Little Feet since
- 20:46Speaker 10: eighty eight, and then Scott Schirard has their vocalist, has
- 20:49Speaker 10: been the vocalist and a guitarist in Little Feet since
- 20:52Speaker 10: twenty nineteen, but he's been carrying that torch of Lowell
- 20:55Speaker 10: George since then. And Little Feet had did kind of
- 20:58Speaker 10: their farewell last Farewell tour recently, which I don't think
- 21:01Speaker 10: they're gonna give up playing generally, but I think they're
- 21:03Speaker 10: going to give.
- 21:04Speaker 7: Up larger tours. But uh, that be that as it may.
- 21:08Speaker 10: Fred and Scott from Littlefeed are doing a first ever
- 21:11Speaker 10: acoustic tour and I can't wait to hear this, just
- 21:13Speaker 10: because they have such storied histories between them. You know,
- 21:16Speaker 10: they've played with everybody, and this is going to be
- 21:18Speaker 10: a great storytellers type idea. I presume when they join
- 21:22Speaker 10: us on Mountain Stage in December.
- 21:23Speaker 3: All right, and again, if you tickets are going to
- 21:26Speaker 3: go on sale, when did you say.
- 21:27Speaker 10: Tomorrow at five o'clock, We're gonna put them on sale
- 21:30Speaker 10: for Thirsty Thursday. But that's when they go. Yeah, they're
- 21:35Speaker 10: on so to our members right now. Mountain Stage members
- 21:37Speaker 10: have had early access, but you.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Could come and buy them directly, directly and and and
- 21:42Speaker 3: just forego some.
- 21:43Speaker 7: Of those tickets to fees exactly.
- 21:45Speaker 10: Yeah, if you buy them, we're going to have our
- 21:46Speaker 10: friend Jen Brown's going to be there at Thirsty Thursday.
- 21:48Speaker 10: So anybody that's interested in getting their ticket for this December,
- 21:51Speaker 10: and I presume this show will sell out. It's especially
- 21:53Speaker 10: with us announcing it this far in advance that I
- 21:55Speaker 10: think a lot of people are going to show interest,
- 21:57Speaker 10: uh and be coming out of town. So if you
- 21:59Speaker 10: want to get them early, you can come join us
- 22:00Speaker 10: at Thirsty Thursday and you can take advantage of that
- 22:03Speaker 10: as well as a ton of other giveaways as there
- 22:06Speaker 10: always are when the Mountain comes down for Thirsty Thursday.
- 22:08Speaker 10: Well five Street Brewings.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Speaking of the mountain coming down. Look who's here, ladies
- 22:13Speaker 3: and gentlemen.
- 22:14Speaker 7: This is live radio.
- 22:15Speaker 3: This is what I'm Steve Animal who for some reason,
- 22:17Speaker 3: there's two microphones like he's a president. Can you hear
- 22:21Speaker 3: me now?
- 22:22Speaker 7: Testing one?
- 22:22Speaker 3: Two, three?
- 22:23Speaker 7: That's it?
- 22:24Speaker 3: Yeah, how are you brother? Where have you been in.
- 22:27Speaker 11: The other studio? Running through the building. It's going to
- 22:30Speaker 11: keep this boyish figure, you know, we have a company
- 22:32Speaker 11: here right, Adam earlier in my studio. Good to see
- 22:36Speaker 11: you again, Bro, thank you man, Thank you about Thursday.
- 22:38Speaker 11: Thursday tomorrow night at five Street Brewing you always a
- 22:40Speaker 11: good guys will be there. Yes, the Mountain meets Mountain stage,
- 22:44Speaker 11: which is awesome. Last time it was phenomenal. Bob Thompson
- 22:48Speaker 11: was there, John Ingram, Jeff Shirley, the rest of the crew,
- 22:51Speaker 11: people I haven't seen in years. It's a lot of fun.
- 22:54Speaker 11: And if you haven't been down to Fifth Street yet,
- 22:56Speaker 11: right across from Slack Plaza, there's free parking in the
- 22:59Speaker 11: summer street rise right after six o'clock. But it's always
- 23:02Speaker 11: a good time. You can sit outside, sit inside. The
- 23:06Speaker 11: sandwiches are great.
- 23:07Speaker 7: It's going to be a beautiful day.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:09Speaker 7: My T shirt has the grilled cheeses on there. That's
- 23:10Speaker 7: what they're known for.
- 23:11Speaker 11: Yeah, they're very good. Home to Animal Ale, which we
- 23:15Speaker 11: will have some more to be released in the near future,
- 23:18Speaker 11: looking forward to.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Now this Animal Ale this is your own beer that
- 23:21Speaker 3: they named after you. Yesul what did you say? It
- 23:24Speaker 3: was full of flavor, goodness and bad decisions and bad decisions, Yes,
- 23:31Speaker 3: very minimal hope.
- 23:34Speaker 11: Yeah, we have flowers from Art's flowers. They give away
- 23:36Speaker 11: gift certificates Mountain merch t shirts while they last, and yeah,
- 23:40Speaker 11: it's always a good time.
- 23:41Speaker 12: Man.
- 23:41Speaker 11: It's still summer so and our walk is going on.
- 23:44Speaker 7: Oh sweet, I have the weather's going to be perfect. Man,
- 23:47Speaker 7: this is gonna be a great day.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:48Speaker 11: So definitely Thursday, Thursday the Animal House Style at Fife.
- 23:53Speaker 7: Good time.
- 23:53Speaker 11: And I appreciate the partnership with Mountain Stage. You guys
- 23:57Speaker 11: have always been a fan of Mountain Stage for years,
- 24:00Speaker 11: all the great shows that have come and gone, and
- 24:02Speaker 11: you know, we rock, you rock.
- 24:04Speaker 13: Thank you.
- 24:04Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 24:04Speaker 7: I think as a tag team were undefeated.
- 24:06Speaker 3: I like it.
- 24:07Speaker 7: Everybody rock, oh yeah at that point.
- 24:09Speaker 3: At that point, so talk about I mean we were
- 24:13Speaker 3: mentioning the shows that are come up in December, talking
- 24:15Speaker 3: about some little closer.
- 24:17Speaker 10: Yeah this Sunday, Actually, Mountain Stage. We've got a great
- 24:19Speaker 10: for your bluegrass lovers out there. We've got the one
- 24:22Speaker 10: and only Tony Trishka, who actually taught Bayla Fleck. I mean,
- 24:24Speaker 10: I think if most people know a banjo player, it's
- 24:26Speaker 10: probably Baila Fleck. Well, his teacher was Tony Trishka, and
- 24:29Speaker 10: that's why they call him one of the fathers of
- 24:30Speaker 10: bluegrass music, of new grass that is rather because he
- 24:34Speaker 10: kind of made the progressive transition from the kind of
- 24:36Speaker 10: traditional bluegrass that you think of with Earl Scruggs, but
- 24:38Speaker 10: also into the progressive world of more composed music and
- 24:41Speaker 10: arranged versions of using bluegrass instruments. And he's got a
- 24:45Speaker 10: new project that's based off some jams between John Hartford
- 24:48Speaker 10: and Earl Scruggs. So if those aren't obscure names for you,
- 24:51Speaker 10: then you know how special that is. And so but
- 24:54Speaker 10: no matter what, when you come to Mountain Stage, no
- 24:56Speaker 10: matter what you expect, you're always gonna walk away a
- 24:58Speaker 10: fan of something new. And I really think supporting live
- 25:01Speaker 10: music is like a radical behavior these days, just getting
- 25:04Speaker 10: people out of the house. And so I hope people
- 25:06Speaker 10: will rebel against the norm, leave the house, come watch
- 25:09Speaker 10: some fingers touching strings, some live, handmade music, and you'll
- 25:12Speaker 10: be glad you did this.
- 25:13Speaker 7: Sunday Mountain Stage.
- 25:15Speaker 10: More free parking at the Culture Center Theater on the
- 25:18Speaker 10: State Capitol Grounds. That's this Sunday at seven o'clock. Mountain Stage.
- 25:21Speaker 10: Dot org is where you can find our whole schedule.
- 25:23Speaker 11: You know my motto, if it's for free, it's for me,
- 25:26Speaker 11: that's right, Free ninety nine.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't beat free ninety nine one percent. And
- 25:31Speaker 3: how many years has Mountain Stage been around?
- 25:33Speaker 10: So this is we're wrapping up our forty thirty year.
- 25:36Speaker 10: Yeah yeah, and so next year's number forty four and
- 25:38Speaker 10: we're gonna be Jerry West years old.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Yeah, excellent. And no, I mean when this thing first started,
- 25:44Speaker 3: and I'm familiar with the story, I wasn't around. I
- 25:47Speaker 3: mean I wasn't around, but I was living, you know
- 25:49Speaker 3: at that point. But I was a kid, I remember.
- 25:53Speaker 3: You know, there were some I don't want to say naysayers,
- 25:55Speaker 3: but some people that just kind of were like, I
- 25:57Speaker 3: don't know if this thing is gonna work. Well, it
- 25:59Speaker 3: just gets bigger and better every year.
- 26:02Speaker 10: Yeah, it turns out it's you know, a lot of
- 26:04Speaker 10: people might have said, like, you can't do a show
- 26:06Speaker 10: like this in West Virginia, but Larry Gross, our founder,
- 26:09Speaker 10: and he was the host and artistic director for forty years,
- 26:13Speaker 10: he always knew it could be done here. And it
- 26:15Speaker 10: turns out, and I think he's right that this is
- 26:17Speaker 10: the only place we could do this. If Mountain Stage
- 26:19Speaker 10: were in a big city, even like DC or Philadelphia
- 26:22Speaker 10: or New York. There's a lot of pressures that come
- 26:23Speaker 10: from the outside music world that are going to influence
- 26:27Speaker 10: the decisions that are made. And not to mention, when
- 26:29Speaker 10: you're in a major market like that, artists want to
- 26:31Speaker 10: get paid, you know. Meanwhile, here in West Virginia, folks
- 26:34Speaker 10: are often passing through. They understand the aspect of our show,
- 26:39Speaker 10: the ratio, the reason you do it is for a
- 26:41Speaker 10: promotional purpose, you know. And we're only going to sell
- 26:43Speaker 10: four hundred and sixty tickets no matter what, you know.
- 26:45Speaker 10: And so I think we could only have done Mountain
- 26:48Speaker 10: Stage the way we've done it from here, and you know,
- 26:51Speaker 10: and I think some people thought, why don't you do
- 26:53Speaker 10: more bluegrass music? Well, that would get kind of boring
- 26:55Speaker 10: after a while. Yeah, I don't want to have all
- 26:56Speaker 10: bluegrass music all the time.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Right Mountain Stage is and I've been you know, is
- 27:01Speaker 3: that if you don't like the type music, stick around.
- 27:04Speaker 7: Yeah, listen to the next fifteen or twenty minutes later,
- 27:06Speaker 7: somebody else is coming up.
- 27:07Speaker 3: And so many of the artists Adam reach out to
- 27:10Speaker 3: you guys about coming on. They want to come on.
- 27:12Speaker 3: And I always go back to the early nineteen nineties.
- 27:16Speaker 3: I want to say ninety one or ninety two, RAM
- 27:19Speaker 3: did like two shows that year. Yeah, and they chose
- 27:22Speaker 3: to do Mountain Sage. Other I think was Saturday not.
- 27:23Speaker 10: Like they did SNL, MTV Unplugged and Mountain Stage. So
- 27:26Speaker 10: that's three shows. Yeah, and they but they reached out.
- 27:28Speaker 10: They wanted to be a part.
- 27:29Speaker 7: Of that's right.
- 27:30Speaker 10: Yeah, And since then there's a lot of artists that
- 27:32Speaker 10: have become known have found out about Mountain Stage because
- 27:35Speaker 10: of that. And you know, same with like, you know
- 27:37Speaker 10: a Patty Smith who came to see us not a
- 27:39Speaker 10: few years ago when she was here for the West
- 27:40Speaker 10: Virginia Music Hall of Fame. Steven Wilson Junior's team reached
- 27:45Speaker 10: out to us, you know. I mean he's kind of
- 27:46Speaker 10: a guy that was on the way up, you know,
- 27:48Speaker 10: and probably didn't have to do our show, but he
- 27:50Speaker 10: knew it was like one of those things that an
- 27:52Speaker 10: artist wants to check off off the list, you know.
- 27:54Speaker 10: And at this point, being around forty three years, people
- 27:58Speaker 10: see it as as a legacy program, even though we're
- 28:00Speaker 10: still doing new shows.
- 28:01Speaker 11: Every week and forty three Richard Petty would be good call,
- 28:05Speaker 11: good call much all right, Thursday Thursday is we just
- 28:09Speaker 11: got our color scheme is tomorrow is.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Tomorrow night at five Street Brewing Coviedy, which located on
- 28:13Speaker 3: Summer Street. The Mountain will be live. Steve Animal will
- 28:16Speaker 3: be there. Adam, You're going to be there. We'll have
- 28:19Speaker 3: early tickets for that to that show coming up in December.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Appreciate you stopping by the studio.
- 28:24Speaker 14: Thank you.
- 28:24Speaker 3: What about me? Well, you and I. Actually this is
- 28:27Speaker 3: going to be my next thing. I'm going to promote, Adam.
- 28:29Speaker 3: If you need something to do next Thursday night, Animal
- 28:32Speaker 3: and I will be with the Marshall University Quarterback Club
- 28:34Speaker 3: at Charleston the annual Paint the Capital City Green event
- 28:38Speaker 3: next Thursday night that the bill No Flight School. Tony
- 28:41Speaker 3: Gibson's going to be there, the head coach of the Herd,
- 28:43Speaker 3: several other coaches including Corney Jackson and Gerald Harrison. The
- 28:47Speaker 3: athletic director Steve Cotton, the voice of the Thundering Herd,
- 28:51Speaker 3: will be there. Little round tables and this event, if
- 28:54Speaker 3: it's not already sold out, it probably will because it
- 28:56Speaker 3: sells out every year. Get your tickets at herdzone dot
- 28:58Speaker 3: com or by calling three zero four six nine six
- 29:01Speaker 3: forty six sixty one. And for some reason they thought
- 29:03Speaker 3: it would be a good idea yet again to have
- 29:05Speaker 3: Animal and I amc this.
- 29:06Speaker 11: Is I don't understand, but I guess it's a higher
- 29:08Speaker 11: power either Tony Stroud. Maybe Brad said, hey, these guys
- 29:15Speaker 11: are okay. I mean we we cleared security last time.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 29:19Speaker 1: But if it was.
- 29:20Speaker 3: There was that incident our first year we did it
- 29:22Speaker 3: with the airplane. If you remember the airplane incident crawling.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Apparently they just they have they have their planes on
- 29:27Speaker 3: display out there and just so you know, they don't
- 29:31Speaker 3: look favorably on people bimbing it. He's getting inside the airplane.
- 29:35Speaker 3: I won't mention anyone's name. Rhyme with Steve Animal.
- 29:39Speaker 11: And when the key turned and the engine fired up,
- 29:42Speaker 11: I mean it's like, all right, it's like Disney, no
- 29:46Speaker 11: planes for you.
- 29:46Speaker 3: All right, fine, Adam, See you appreciate you guys being here.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Twenty three minutes away from ten. We'll take a break
- 29:51Speaker 3: and come back after this on the Voice of Charleston

- 32:06Speaker 3: Logan lost the legend last night my hometown with the
- 32:09Speaker 3: passion of Willie Akers and Uh, I've got me. I've
- 32:12Speaker 3: got with me in the Jeri Construction studios this morning
- 32:14Speaker 3: to carry the segment because I don't know by whether
- 32:16Speaker 3: I can get through it or not. The voice of
- 32:18Speaker 3: high school Sports and West in West Virginia, Fred Pursinger,
- 32:21Speaker 3: Good morning.
- 32:22Speaker 4: Sir, Good morning, and real quick, you said Logan lost
- 32:26Speaker 4: the legend, I say, the state of West Virginia.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Yeah lost. Oh yeah yeah. We'll go down that a
- 32:30Speaker 3: little bit later on the Guarantee Bank Hotline. We have
- 32:33Speaker 3: current Logan basketball coach Mark Hatsher. Good morning, sir, welcome
- 32:37Speaker 3: to the show.
- 32:38Speaker 14: Hey Dave, Hey Fred, how you guys.
- 32:40Speaker 3: We're doing good and wild Cat Legend. Mike Stone is
- 32:43Speaker 3: with us as well.
- 32:43Speaker 18: Good morning, Michael, Good morning, day, Good morning, Fred.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Good morning.
- 32:47Speaker 5: All right.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Well, now that now that we know that everybody is here, uh, Fred,
- 32:51Speaker 3: I'm going to start with you as somebody who's covered
- 32:53Speaker 3: high school sports, uh and sports in general for a
- 32:56Speaker 3: long long time, there was there was only one coach, akers.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Man, there was I've been very very fortunate in my
- 33:05Speaker 4: years of covering high school basketball since that's what we'll
- 33:08Speaker 4: talk about, and going to places that for a long time,
- 33:12Speaker 4: I think a lot of folks know that I covered
- 33:14Speaker 4: the Beckley Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles, and there were a
- 33:18Speaker 4: lot of places that as an announcer, when you followed
- 33:22Speaker 4: a particular team, you went to and the logan was
- 33:27Speaker 4: two things. Number One, you were assured you're going to
- 33:32Speaker 4: get a great game because Beckley always had great teams.
- 33:34Speaker 4: Logan had great teams. But Logan is, and I mean
- 33:38Speaker 4: this sincerely, there were two places that I think fans
- 33:41Speaker 4: came to to see not just the team, but the coach.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Now I would throw Dave Barksdale from Beckley into that
- 33:52Speaker 4: because of his antheics, but I think a lot of
- 33:55Speaker 4: folks came to Logan to watch, as we say, and
- 33:59Speaker 4: true legend Willie Akers and his running Wildcats, because you
- 34:03Speaker 4: knew you were going to get a great game. You
- 34:06Speaker 4: knew that, I mean, and it wasn't going to be
- 34:08Speaker 4: over until it was over. But to me, such a
- 34:13Speaker 4: class act Willie Acres. I don't care what he had
- 34:16Speaker 4: going for me personally. He always had time. And I
- 34:20Speaker 4: think that's the one thing about Willie that sticks out
- 34:24Speaker 4: in my mind. No matter what was going on, no
- 34:27Speaker 4: matter how big the game, whether it was a state
- 34:29Speaker 4: championship game that he was preparing the Wildcats for whatever
- 34:33Speaker 4: it was. If I called, he would take time. And
- 34:37Speaker 4: that is huge when you know a coach and Mark
- 34:39Speaker 4: can tell you this, you got three thousand things running
- 34:43Speaker 4: through your mind right before a game. Radio GA talk
- 34:46Speaker 4: exactly right, But Willie Acres And then I'll give Mark
- 34:50Speaker 4: Catcher credit.
- 34:50Speaker 3: He's always talked with me as well.
- 34:52Speaker 4: But it's just one of those things that stand out
- 34:54Speaker 4: in my mind about a guy that was more so
- 34:58Speaker 4: much more than a bad basketball player at Mullins High
- 35:01Speaker 4: School or whatever at West Virginia and a coach at
- 35:06Speaker 4: Logan and where he won seventy eight percent of his games.
- 35:10Speaker 4: Think about that, and they didn't dodge anyone. I mean,
- 35:13Speaker 4: just like Logan did they play anybody? So just amazing,
- 35:18Speaker 4: amazing to me.
- 35:18Speaker 3: Coach, let's bring you into this conversation. Your thoughts on
- 35:22Speaker 3: Willie akers as a coach.
- 35:26Speaker 14: As a coach, I mean, you know, he was the
- 35:29Speaker 14: epitome of what we always wanted to be as a coach.
- 35:31Speaker 14: That's what you want to be. A guy that just
- 35:33Speaker 14: started a program and not he was not just a
- 35:36Speaker 14: high school basketball coach. He he made a movement here
- 35:40Speaker 14: in the sixties. When he got here, he organized you know,
- 35:45Speaker 14: we'd always had great basketball teams before him, but when
- 35:49Speaker 14: he got here, he organized it and got it going
- 35:52Speaker 14: on the right page. From four or five years old
- 35:55Speaker 14: and up. You know, the middle school, junior high coaches
- 35:57Speaker 14: were on the same page. The yeah Buddy League coaches
- 36:01Speaker 14: were on the same page. I mean, the system was
- 36:03Speaker 14: taught from the beginning that you when you started basketball
- 36:07Speaker 14: to the end. And you know, being a young boy
- 36:11Speaker 14: in the seventies and you know, Mike got to even
- 36:14Speaker 14: see that even more than me. But being a part
- 36:17Speaker 14: of that. You know, my dad was an assistant coach.
- 36:19Speaker 14: My uncle, my dad both played for coach Akers and
- 36:22Speaker 14: you know that's the one thing when when you measure
- 36:25Speaker 14: a coach, sometimes you can do the wins and losses.
- 36:27Speaker 14: And he was unreal in that part of it. But
- 36:29Speaker 14: the respect of all of his ex players, I mean,
- 36:33Speaker 14: we're talking guys from the sixties I have seen him.
- 36:36Speaker 14: I mean it's like they they would go to the
- 36:38Speaker 14: King's house. I mean, you know what I'm saying. He
- 36:41Speaker 14: he the respect that his ex players have had for
- 36:44Speaker 14: him has always been unreal, and he just he just
- 36:48Speaker 14: demanded that respect and he set that standard. Fred that
- 36:52Speaker 14: that running wildcat system that you know, I hope that
- 36:56Speaker 14: we still show so flashes of that today.
- 36:59Speaker 3: Mike, you played for Coachhakers. What was the time frame
- 37:04Speaker 3: that you played for Coachakers?
- 37:06Speaker 18: Seventy six through seventy eight?
- 37:07Speaker 3: All right, talk about him as a coach.
- 37:11Speaker 18: You know, I think probably a great thing about him
- 37:14Speaker 18: as a coach. Anyone that ever watched him knew how
- 37:20Speaker 18: he had a temper and how he could get upset
- 37:23Speaker 18: and just yell at you. But as soon as practice
- 37:27Speaker 18: or as soon as the game was over, he left
- 37:29Speaker 18: it on the floor. He was smiling, talking to you friendly.
- 37:32Speaker 18: He never carried that anger or that passion or that
- 37:36Speaker 18: he never carried that over off the court. It stayed there.
- 37:40Speaker 18: And he was a friend to everyone, you know, just
- 37:46Speaker 18: a marvelous human being. And it was like he had
- 37:51Speaker 18: a story about everybody. I mean, not just his players,
- 37:54Speaker 18: but maybe someone in the community that he had when
- 37:58Speaker 18: he was teaching school, he's all, you know, let me
- 38:01Speaker 18: tell you this guy here one time he did it.
- 38:03Speaker 18: You know, he had a story. It seemed like about everybody.
- 38:06Speaker 3: You know. A couple of years ago, I went to
- 38:07Speaker 3: see Logan play in the shootout that's over at Western
- 38:11Speaker 3: New State and uh, and I was there. Actually Willie
- 38:15Speaker 3: was there watching and Mark, you may know this from Stone,
- 38:18Speaker 3: You may know this, but I do.
- 38:19Speaker 12: Was it his.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Grandson that played for like one of the schools like
- 38:24Speaker 3: in Williamstown or Saint Mary's. He had somebody in his
- 38:27Speaker 3: family that played there. I don't remember.
- 38:31Speaker 18: That would have been his u.
- 38:34Speaker 7: His son's wife's.
- 38:35Speaker 3: Okay, that's not.
- 38:38Speaker 12: Logan.
- 38:40Speaker 14: It wasn't his Grandsonbody wouldn't watch him play anyway.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Yeah, well, well, and but my point was is I
- 38:45Speaker 3: remember I wanted just somebody said that Coach Akers is here,
- 38:48Speaker 3: and uh, he had a group of people all surrounded
- 38:52Speaker 3: him just because they wanted to be near Willie Acres.
- 38:55Speaker 12: You know.
- 38:55Speaker 3: I mean, these are people that weren't the Logan wasn't
- 38:58Speaker 3: even playing yet. Logan didn't play it all that. This
- 39:00Speaker 3: was an afternoon game, but people wanted to be close
- 39:03Speaker 3: to Coach Akers, and he had that kind of effect
- 39:06Speaker 3: on people.
- 39:06Speaker 14: Mark, Yeah, listen, I could tell you this. When U. B.
- 39:12Speaker 14: Brown was a coach of the Memphis Grizzlies, me and
- 39:14Speaker 14: my father we wanted to go watch a practice or
- 39:17Speaker 14: a couple of days worth of practices we had told
- 39:20Speaker 14: Coach Chakers because Jerry West was the general manager where
- 39:23Speaker 14: Willy made one phone call of course and it was, hey,
- 39:26Speaker 14: you guys are welcome. And when we got there, the
- 39:29Speaker 14: way that we were treated by just I mean Jerry
- 39:33Speaker 14: stepped right down beside of us and talked to us
- 39:35Speaker 14: for two hours. That would have only been possible because
- 39:38Speaker 14: Willie as has made that phone call, and you know,
- 39:41Speaker 14: and listening to Jerry talk with some old with Uv
- 39:44Speaker 14: Brown and like those guys all knew Willy he was
- 39:48Speaker 14: in that club. I mean, he had opportunities back in
- 39:51Speaker 14: the day to leave Logan hide and go to different levels.
- 39:54Speaker 14: And I mean, I'm pretty sure Jerry asked me numerous times,
- 39:58Speaker 14: you know, you want me to and Coach Akers was
- 40:01Speaker 14: just a Logan guy, you know, That's just what he
- 40:03Speaker 14: wanted to do. He wanted to be here and stay here.
- 40:05Speaker 14: But his his touch, you know, it was amazing. Just
- 40:11Speaker 14: after that, I was like, you know, Coach Akers is
- 40:13Speaker 14: known throughout this whole country on the basketball level. It was.
- 40:17Speaker 14: It was pretty unreal.
- 40:18Speaker 3: You know, Mike, when you played for Willie, talk about
- 40:21Speaker 3: the lessons that you learned from Willie. That weren't necessarily
- 40:25Speaker 3: x's and o's on the clipboard.
- 40:27Speaker 18: Well, probably the main thing is discipline. You know, there
- 40:33Speaker 18: was an old thing that disciplines love. He commanded that
- 40:38Speaker 18: all of us, you know, you know, you never talked back.
- 40:43Speaker 18: You knew how to act out in public when they
- 40:46Speaker 18: took us for a pregame meal or restaurant or whatever. Uh,
- 40:50Speaker 18: you know, he taught us, you know, how to sit there,
- 40:53Speaker 18: how to order. I mean, it was just it was
- 40:55Speaker 18: more than just basketball. It was like life lessons that
- 40:58Speaker 18: we learned through him them and uh, you know had
- 41:03Speaker 18: to touch on something marks that you know Mark's talking about,
- 41:08Speaker 18: uh you know, Hubee Brown and stuff. When I was
- 41:12Speaker 18: growing up, of course, they had a Jerry West camp.
- 41:14Speaker 18: It was called Campoix who It started out in uh
- 41:18Speaker 18: Miller School in Charlottesville, Virginia and then eventually moved to
- 41:21Speaker 18: vm I. Well every year Coach Aggers was of course
- 41:25Speaker 18: the counselor there, and some of the counselors that have
- 41:30Speaker 18: been there are guys like Bill Blair that was with
- 41:33Speaker 18: the Minnesota Timberwolves, Mike Schuler, who was Coach of the
- 41:37Speaker 18: Year at the he was the Kings, and the Portland
- 41:40Speaker 18: Trail Blazers all.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Uh.
- 41:44Speaker 18: I mean, there's so many of those people that were
- 41:48Speaker 18: at that that went on to become very successful basketball coaches.
- 41:53Speaker 18: And you know, coach Agers stayed in touch with him
- 41:55Speaker 18: and stuff, and you know he was beloved by them,
- 41:59Speaker 18: and you know, so you know, like Mark said, his
- 42:04Speaker 18: outreach was just something he just had. You know, he
- 42:07Speaker 18: knew so many people.
- 42:09Speaker 4: Mike, you were you played on those teams and certainly
- 42:13Speaker 4: the glory days of the running Wildcats in seventy seven
- 42:17Speaker 4: and seventy eight when he won two of his four
- 42:19Speaker 4: state titles. What was really like, say, from game one
- 42:24Speaker 4: when you're getting ready for the season and that final game,
- 42:27Speaker 4: that championship game, was there much of a change in
- 42:30Speaker 4: the coach?
- 42:32Speaker 18: You know what my senior year in seventy eight, Game
- 42:36Speaker 18: one we were we played we used to always open
- 42:40Speaker 18: up at Mullins, you know, his former team, and we
- 42:45Speaker 18: were absolutely in a dog fight there the first game
- 42:47Speaker 18: of the year. And you know, as the season progressed,
- 42:55Speaker 18: you know, I think we I think we ended up
- 42:57Speaker 18: being twenty six and one for the for the year.
- 42:59Speaker 18: No way would I I thought, we don't lost one
- 43:01Speaker 18: game that year. But one thing I always remember and
- 43:08Speaker 18: there's there was an article in a newspaper about this
- 43:10Speaker 18: my junior year when we won the state championship. Before
- 43:13Speaker 18: the game, we're in the locker room at the Civic Center,
- 43:16Speaker 18: and I mean, nobody said a word. Everybody had her
- 43:19Speaker 18: head down, her thoughts were And he came in and
- 43:22Speaker 18: he got worried. He thought, man, I think they're scared
- 43:25Speaker 18: or something. So he started telling stories about when he
- 43:28Speaker 18: was in college tried to loosen us up and uh
- 43:32Speaker 18: and and things that had happened and stuff. And I
- 43:35Speaker 18: remember him saying, boy, I didn't know if they were
- 43:37Speaker 18: going to be prepared or not. And then we went
- 43:40Speaker 18: out and scored one hundred and eleven points. And it
- 43:42Speaker 18: still stands today.
- 43:43Speaker 3: And and here's the thing about it, guys, and you
- 43:46Speaker 3: guys are are are still in Logan doing great things.
- 43:50Speaker 3: But you know, Willie went on to become a county commissioner.
- 43:54Speaker 3: Uh and uh. And here is where I'm gonna lose it.
- 43:57Speaker 3: I'm just gonna tell you I I did not have
- 44:00Speaker 3: a bigger fan in the world, the bigger other than
- 44:04Speaker 3: my family, my wife, other than and she's iffy sometimes,
- 44:07Speaker 3: I mean, but other than coach akers. I mean, you know,
- 44:12Speaker 3: when if I would go to Logan, I go down, Mike,
- 44:15Speaker 3: I'll see you. Guy wants to both of you guys
- 44:16Speaker 3: next month for the Logan I Hall of Fame. I
- 44:18Speaker 3: have MC that every year. Coach was always there and
- 44:20Speaker 3: he would bring up something I said on the air
- 44:22Speaker 3: the week before because he listened online and he was
- 44:26Speaker 3: He was a mentor to me. And I never played.
- 44:29Speaker 3: I never played basketball in my life, you know. But
- 44:31Speaker 3: he was a mentor for me. I mean he really
- 44:34Speaker 3: he was, and he was. He was my biggest cheerleader.
- 44:36Speaker 3: And I will say this, I would not be the
- 44:41Speaker 3: I don't know how much of a broadcaster I am now,
- 44:43Speaker 3: but I would not be the broadcaster or the man
- 44:45Speaker 3: I am now if it weren't for Coach Akers. And
- 44:46Speaker 3: I never played. I never played. I never played basketball,
- 44:49Speaker 3: you know.
- 44:50Speaker 4: I went to Logan h during the time he was
- 44:52Speaker 4: a commissioner, and I was happy to walk. I walked
- 44:55Speaker 4: from my car and I was going to see Speedy
- 44:57Speaker 4: Bevans and the crew at WDOW. Willie was on the
- 45:01Speaker 4: street and he yelled at me and he said, Hey,
- 45:05Speaker 4: I got to show you my new office. Let's go.
- 45:07Speaker 4: We went upstairs and he gave me the tour. But
- 45:10Speaker 4: as great a coach as he was, and he was
- 45:12Speaker 4: indeed a great great man, he was a heck of
- 45:16Speaker 4: a basketball player. Where as Mike. He went to Mullens
- 45:18Speaker 4: High School. Nineteen fifty five, they won a state championship.
- 45:22Speaker 4: They beat a team that was led by Leo Bird,
- 45:26Speaker 4: the Huntington High Pony Express Leo Bird in that tournament.
- 45:30Speaker 4: They played three games in that tournament and Leo Bird
- 45:34Speaker 4: scored one hundred and eighteen points by himself in those
- 45:37Speaker 4: three games. But Huntington got beat by Mullins seventy six
- 45:44Speaker 4: to sixty four I think was a final score. And
- 45:47Speaker 4: the games that they played the Logan Wildcats during that
- 45:50Speaker 4: run in nineteen fifty four or the Mullins Rebels rother
- 45:53Speaker 4: during that run. They won those playoff games from sectionals
- 45:57Speaker 4: to regionals to the state championship, each game by an
- 46:00Speaker 4: average of twenty two points a game. So Mullins led
- 46:04Speaker 4: by uh, who is the other guy's name? I wrote
- 46:08Speaker 4: it down because I knew who, well, no head coach was.
- 46:14Speaker 4: The head coach was Lilis D'Antoni. Of course that takes
- 46:17Speaker 4: us back away, but yeah, it was Don Tabscott. Don
- 46:22Speaker 4: Tabscott was the guy that was his running mate on
- 46:24Speaker 4: that Mullin's Rebel team. But you talk about tremendous player,
- 46:29Speaker 4: tremendous coach, but an even better man. Yeah, and our
- 46:34Speaker 4: was Coachhakers.
- 46:35Speaker 3: Our thoughts and prayers to Linda and Chad and great
- 46:38Speaker 3: family and Darren and Mike Stone and coach Marcatcher. I
- 46:43Speaker 3: appreciate you both being here with me today, and Fred
- 46:45Speaker 3: is always appreciated you the guys as well. Sad day

- 49:34Speaker 3: what you don't know. Ken Heurscher, I appreciate Logan High, Coach,
- 49:37Speaker 3: Mark Hatcher and Logan High legend Mike Stone, and of
- 49:40Speaker 3: course the legendary is always Fred Pursinger for joining me
- 49:43Speaker 3: on the show today. And again it was difficult. I
- 49:45Speaker 3: posted a little, a very tearful message on social media
- 49:49Speaker 3: about coach akers last night. Let me tell you, I mean,
- 49:52Speaker 3: they got no better than Willie Acres, and I don't
- 49:54Speaker 3: And I told somebody this morning. If Willie Acres never
- 49:56Speaker 3: coached a game of basketball, if you he were working
- 50:00Speaker 3: fast food or changing the oil in your car, he
- 50:03Speaker 3: had been the same person, because that's just the kind
- 50:05Speaker 3: of guy that Willy Acres was. And of course he's
- 50:08Speaker 3: known for his legendary basketball coaching career, but he's just
- 50:12Speaker 3: a hell of a man. I mean, regardless if he
- 50:15Speaker 3: never coached basketball. I mean, he really really was. He
- 50:17Speaker 3: was a fantastic human being. And as I said, a
- 50:20Speaker 3: mentored me, somebody who never played basketball at all, but
- 50:25Speaker 3: kind of took me under his wing, just as a
- 50:28Speaker 3: young broadcaster in Logan when I moved back there in
- 50:31Speaker 3: nineteen ninety three, and I didn't know. I went to
- 50:35Speaker 3: school with one of Willy's sons, but I didn't know
- 50:37Speaker 3: Willy as a person. I mean, everybody knew coach acres.
- 50:42Speaker 3: But I didn't really know him as you know that well,
- 50:45Speaker 3: other than just somebody you'd see from Afar until I
- 50:48Speaker 3: went back to Logan, and for some reason he took
- 50:51Speaker 3: a liking to me, and he and London took me
- 50:54Speaker 3: under his wing. He was a great guy. And I'll
- 50:55Speaker 3: say that a couple of things. One thing I didn't
- 50:57Speaker 3: get to bring up with Hatcher and Stone and with
- 50:59Speaker 3: Fred Persinger was in the heyday of the Running Wildcats
- 51:04Speaker 3: when I was a kid of a boy in the
- 51:05Speaker 3: nineteen seventies and when I was a student at Logan
- 51:08Speaker 3: High in the eighties, if you weren't on Middleburg Island
- 51:10Speaker 3: by five o'clock for a seven thirty tip, you didn't
- 51:13Speaker 3: get a seat. If you wanted to go to a
- 51:15Speaker 3: Logan High game in nineteen seventy eight, you got on
- 51:18Speaker 3: the island by five o'clock for a seven thirty tip,
- 51:20Speaker 3: or there were no seats available. So he will certainly
- 51:23Speaker 3: be missed. So Dave Allen showing five eighty liive is
