- Canon Stogner: Welcome back to another episode of the Saturday Slate Show. I am your co-host, Cannon Stogner, here with my other host, Andrew Wright. We are back with another episode today, talking about this week of college football. I believe this is week nine. Andrew Wright: Yep, I think so, sounds right. Canon Stogner: yeah. So very excited to get into it. We've got some pretty good games this week. We're obviously going to start with South Carolina first, like we always do. and then we're going to preview the rest of them. And then give our five spread picks towards the end. Andrew, you do have the standings and things for that, right? Andrew Wright: Yep, I do. Canon Stogner: Okay. So we'll get into that in a little bit. But first, we were left another voicemail by Brent Steigner. Andrew, I have not listened to it. So what you hear Andrew Wright: Okay, all right, that's really good. Canon Stogner: is also the first thing that I'll hear. So, and reminder this is coming off the massive Tennessee win. at home, stormed the field. Andrew actually played golf today with a Tennessee fan. his name is Andrew Wright: How was that? Canon Stogner: his name was Ken, very nice guy. the first thing he like got out of the cart to like meet me. He was like, What's up, man? I was like, What's up? I noticed your hat. And he goes, I take it. You're a South Carolina fan. Andrew Wright: Hahaha Canon Stogner: And he's like, Yeah. And I said, Well, I said, I appreciate you because you gave me one of the greatest nights of my life. Andrew Wright: There you go. Canon Stogner: And he said, I'm gonna go use the bathroom. After that. And he left. But we played golf with him. He's a very good dude. He did make one comment. He had parred a hole. He had struggled a little bit. He's just now getting back into golf. He used to play like when he was in high school and stuff. He's probably 55, 60 now. but he's just now getting back into it. And he parred a hole, and he was very excited. He said, I figure there was a penalty on the T box that got called back. So although it was a very well placed joke, it was still very immature and Tennessee like to bring up a penalty. Cause like we said, I thought the refs caught a great game. Watch it back. I thought everything they call was absolutely correct. Andrew Wright: That's right. Canon Stogner: And you know, had to both both referees are officiating the game both ways. So that's how you play. the referees had nothing to do with that fourth and one play, but that's neither here nor there. all right, let's get into it. Let's listen listen to the voicemail. Thank you. Thank you. Let me pause it right there. I wore the Christmas sweater because it felt like Christmas to me. Andrew Wright: man. Canon Stogner: And so that's the main reason for it. I wore the Christmas sweater because it felt like Christmas and it was just coming off a great game. It was like a Christmas present. Second reason why I wore my Christmas sweater is because the day before we obviously went to the game. Well, I had my hands were full when I got back home Saturday night. And I took about eight to ten shirts with me to the game because I didn't know what color South Carolina was going to wear. I didn't know if it was going to be cold or if it was going to be hot. So I was very it was in between. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: so I decided to just bring my whole closet. And then also we had another guy that went with us that my dad wasn't sure if he had the apparel for the game. So I also brought some clothes for him as well. So that is the real reason why I wore the Christmas sweater. But the reason I'm going with it is because that was my early Christmas present. Beating Tennessee Andrew Wright: Okay. Canon Stogner: and going on the field. But yeah, probably in the record Andrew Wright: thank you, Brent. Canon Stogner: Appreciate it. Yeah, I didn't I didn't want to mention it on Monday's episode because I wasn't sure if he wanted me to talk about it. But yeah, Brent took a hard fall. He he landed on his left side. Andrew Wright: You Canon Stogner: Andrew, I remember I couldn't give you the full story of how it happened because like I said, I didn't want to mention it because I didn't know if he's gonna talk about it. But I was the very first one out. Andrew Wright: Okay. Canon Stogner: like out of our group that was there. I was the very first one that was out. and you remember last time were at you were at the last game with us, right? When we stormed. Andrew Wright: Yeah, A yeah. Canon Stogner: Not Tennessee. You were at Tennessee, right? Yeah. Andrew Wright: Yeah, 1010CNNAM. Canon Stogner: So you remember, do you remember when we jumped over the wall, there was that chair there? And like the person that went before me, like landed, jumped on the chair. Well, the chair flipped like completely. Like the the lady that jumped, like lost it. so that's always stuck in my head because she fell hard. and it kind of ruined it for everybody else because everybody else had to jump around it, which clogged up the whole section. But so yeah, Saturday when I was scaling the wall, I said, I was the first one to go. I was looking for the chair, there was no chair. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: And so I jumped and I got a lot of air. And this is a deep drop, and it's concrete right there at the edge of the wall. So it's a deep drop, and I landed, and I when my foot landed, I just took off. Well, then like as I'm filming, I realized like, okay, well, this isn't as fun if nobody else is with me. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: So I turned back around, and here comes Lucas. And me and Lucas do a little jump and side bump and I knock Lucas down. And so I'm like, shoot, let me go get my dad. Cause my dad is usually helping people. He's a good volunteer. He's usually helping people. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: so I was like, let me go get my dad. So I turn back around to go get my dad and I look and his baseball jersey that he calls that he says it's not a jersey because it doesn't have a name and a number on it, is laid out on his left side on the ground. And my it's like it's a pretty scary scene because everybody else is coming on. So it's like you don't want to get trampled. So very Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: funny, but he gets back up like he always does, real warrior that just kept going and it's true, true definition of what a game cock is like. Andrew Wright: That's right. Canon Stogner: so yeah, he got back up, but he did mess up his hip or shoulder something. I know he was rubbing something Monday or Sunday morning. But yeah, so that was how the whole storming went. but yeah, it was incredible. And what was the other thing you talked about? Tennessee fans. Yeah, they're horrific. They're horrific. They Yeah you know, South Carolina really has a good track record against them in every sport as of late. I mean, Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: they've I think they got blown out the next year at home, but they're two and one against them in their last three. basketball, they usually compete with them. They beat them a couple years ago in Tennessee, was so good with Dalton Connect. So, and they always handled the women's basketball team pretty good. So very Yeah, it's very weird why they hate on us so much. I know we're rivals, but they discredit South Carolina. because I think Andrew Wright: Yeah, I agree. Canon Stogner: at Tennessee, Tennessee's in about the same category as South Carolina. And I would put Florida in that category. I would say probably like a Oklahoma and maybe a Mississippi State and a Kentucky and a Missouri. That's the category that they're in. They're in about that tier two, as Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: like blue blood, I guess. I don't know what the word I'm looking for. But they think and they talk like they're in the same category as Georgia and Alabama and Texas and all these teams. So Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: they're really they're just they're confused. They're confused. They're a confused fan base is what they are. it's the power T, although nobody's scared of the power T. so yeah, very weird fan base and just no credit given to us. They don't want to blame anybody else. But yeah. They beat themselves, so they're one and one this year against themselves. So I I don't know. You tell me what you think. Tell me, give me your thoughts. Andrew Wright: I'm with you and Brent, man. just, there's just a real deep dislike for them. kind of, I like it's always kind of been like the way Sacramento fans view other fan bases has always kind of been like, or team wise, Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee. And like, I don't really even care about Georgia people anymore. It's just like Clemson and Tennessee and then the rest of the field. like, obviously if Clemson wasn't even a thing, like Tennessee fans would easily be the most hated by Sacramento fans, easily. it wouldn't even be close, I don't think, a Clemson wasn't around. So yeah, they're a bunch of knuckleheads. Canon Stogner: and real quick, I don't know if he's listening, but I want to give a shout out to my buddy Clayton Catledge. He decided to call me last night. and Clayton's 12 or 13, I guess. seventh grade, so he's probably 12. he did get under my skin, which I'm not proud of. I'm not proud of how quickly he got under my skin, especially be a twenty or twelve year old. but he called me yesterday and he's like, dude. why'd y'all storm the field against Tennessee? That's not a field storming game. And I was like, first of all, y'all stormed the field against Georgia Southern. and second of all It was a game winning field goal against the number eleven team. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: And he's like, Yeah, but we don't have to pay anybody when we storm the field. that did nothing for me. That comment made absolutely no sense. I don't think anybody cares about the money. I mean, our AD Jeremiah Donati was sitting there calling people to come onto the field. head coach of the football team, Shane Beamer, was calling people to come onto the field. So I don't think it really matters the money that we're paying. So that was the first thing that he said that got under my skin because it was a field worthy game. I could understand if it was a blowout. Maybe you don't storm the field. especially I don't know. But a game winning field goal, you have to storm the field. You have to. And Andrew Wright: Correct, absolutely. Canon Stogner: I mean, and then the second thing he said was, Well, at least our quarterback's better than yours. And I'm and I'm thinking, okay, maybe I mean, yeah, you have a good argument Trevor Lawrence is better than Bryce Young. That's a very good argument. We can we can argue about that. We can argue about that. I'm gonna side with Bryce Young, but we can argue about that because he's a Jaguars fan. but he goes, no, Tate Reynolds is better than Lenore Sellers. Andrew Wright: He was talking about two touchdown takes. Canon Stogner: Yeah. And I I like disgustedly laughed and I'm just like, You can't be serious. And he's like, He is. I'm like, Okay, I was like, let's just go look at the stats real quick. I was like, 'cause Lenorse hasn't had a great year. so we go look at the stats and Lenorse is like top sixty, top seventy in every QB category. Tate Reynolds is a hundred and twenty or worse in passing yards, passing touchdowns, or QBR. So Yeah, horrific argument from him. I think he was just trying to get under my skin and it worked, but it did. Andrew Wright: He was. And it did work. Canon Stogner: so yeah, but horrific, horrific argument out of him. all right. We are past Tennessee. We're not looking ahead to Clemson. We're done talking about Clemson, the poop show they got up there. Let's go ahead and move on to next week. Andrew, this is a massive game for South Carolina. you know. Not looking ahead, but if things could work out the right way, there is a path for South Carolina. They obviously have a gauntlet they have to go through. But there is a path and this would be a massive win traveling to Norman and beating Brent Venables and the four and a half favorites, Oklahoma. but there's a thing going around called the SEC flu, which Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Yep. Canon Stogner: every team this year that has won a ranked game the previous week has lost. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Or it's Andrew Wright: Something about that in the Player of Week combination, something with that. Canon Stogner: Yeah. So it's something weird after a team has won a ranked game this year in the SEC against another SEC opponent, or I don't even know if it's against another SEC opponent, the next week they have lost. You got Tennessee beating Alabama, then losing. You got Florida beating Ole Miss and then losing to Missouri. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: You have Andrew Wright: Well, they beat Georgia then turned around and lost LSU. Canon Stogner: Auburn beat Georgia, lost to LSU. yeah. So there's a couple of different games that's gone that way. So another game for South Carolina. I mean, it's kind of the flu game. They're going to Oklahoma, you're coming off a ranked win at home, and then you got to go play a very good defense, probably one of the best in the nation, if not the best. so yeah, it's gonna be a tough matchup for South Carolina. I think I've said the last couple of weeks, I think Sac Carolina matches up well against this team, against this team. I don't know exactly how they match up against Oklahoma. I don't think Sar Carlana's pass defense is good enough to overwhelm John Mateira like other teams have been. I don't know if their pass rush is consistent enough. I do still like the run game on defense. but I'm worried about What Brent Venables is going to do to Lenores because it's no secret. Lenores struggles in the passing game. He struggles reading the defender. He gets very confused very easily. And Brent Andrew Wright: Thank Canon Stogner: Venables is probably one of the best in the country in doing that, confusing the quarterback. so it's a very good matchup for Brent Venables. He's probably going to spy him. He's probably going to send different spies from different locations just to change it up. So Sacalon's wants to win this game. If they want to win on offense, they're going to have to make big time catches. They're going to have to make big time throws. They're going to have to be able run the ball with Fuller and the rest of the running game. And then Lenors is also going to have to do enough with his legs against whoever's spying on him. Because you saw last week against Tennessee. You know, he had some pretty big runs throughout the game, but a lot of it was like either a misassignment or they just didn't have a spy on. But Towards the end of the game, they started spying them, which I didn't understand on that one scramble he had, they weren't spying them. But when Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: they were spying them, they actually did a pretty good job. They took good angles and they forced them out. They had a couple sacks outside the pocket on them with those spies. So I don't know if Oklahoma's gonna give him that chance to, you know, use his legs without a spy. So if they want to win this game, if they want to play good offensively, I think he's gonna have to do it with his legs, but he's also gonna have to make the spy guy miss. because if not, it's gonna be a long night. Cause like we said, this is a very Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: good defense. offense though, obviously it's no secret. Oklahoma has struggled. Both teams come into this game unranked. Sacalina is receiving votes. Oklahoma is favored by four and a half. The overunder is forty four and a half. we thought last week fifty one and a half was a lot, and ended up being right on the money. forty four and a half, Andrew. What do you think about this spread? I mean the overunder. Andrew Wright: I'd probably lean under just because just Overall series wise the last two years think about two years ago when Sakurano went to Norman and dominated defensively I think they had two defensive touchdowns in the first half even more He had to pick six and just a blowout game And then last year was about the complete opposite just in terms of a defensive domination Oklahoma really shut the north down last year. Just looking out of here. He It wasn't 17 or 25, which like okay. That's a decent game for him, but only through for a hundred and twenty four yards He did have a touchdown, but racked up six sacks in that game last year. And so his rushing yards ended up being 14 carries for negative Canon Stogner: Mm-hmm. Andrew Wright: nine yards. So they really did a good job of shutting him down. His longest run in that game was 13 yards last year. So yeah, just because of that and the way the two defenses kind of played in the series and back to back years, I would lean under there thinking like a 20 to 17, 23, 17, 23, 10-ish type game. I just don't see Sacramento being able to put up a ton of points against Oklahoma. And I also don't see Oklahoma being able to put up a ton of points against South Carolina either. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Oklahoma definitely has the better defense, at least overall the better defense. very good linebackers, very good D line. I'm just looking here. Oklahoma's giving up twenty one points per game. Or sorry, they're giving up seventeen points a game. They gave up shut out UTEP. They gave up seventeen to Michigan, which that's a running quarterback, but I don't think soccer lines is as physical as them and then Oklahoma also had some bad turnovers. John Material played awful. the next week they beat New Mexico 14 to six. Georgia, this is the game that I really think shot up their average. Georgia scored forty one on them. I think Gunner is a much better passer than Gunner. He also has a lot more weapons. Texas scored twenty four on him. Norse is probably better than Arch, I guess. Maybe not in the passing game. I don't know, actually. I don't know. Andrew Wright: That's how I would say it. Canon Stogner: I don't know. and then Kentucky scored 21, but John Mantier had some bad turnovers in that game, too. So the defense is playing well. I mean, Kenny Minchy went twenty one for twenty-eight for only 158 yards. So it feels like they're kind of taking away the deep ball. They're gonna make you beat them short. but my biggest fear going into this game is Nick Harbor didn't have any catches Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: last week. And so I'm afraid they're gonna, say, let's try to get Harbor the ball. Let's get Harbor involved early. And that scares me. Because that's a w that's a waste of a play almost every time. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm, it is. Canon Stogner: it's a waste of a play. And yeah, I don't know. I don't know where you go here from here with Harbor. I don't know. I I think he's just a waste of a spot out there. I really do. Andrew Wright: Yeah, he'll have to help make a big place somewhere to get some belief and confidence back from the fan base if he wants to have that down the stretch. Canon Stogner: Yeah, he had his probably he he had probably the best game of his career against Florida. Andrew Wright: Yeah, he did, probably. Canon Stogner: he played well and the only time that the ball was really thrown to him again in the Tennessee game was a deep ball and he actually had a step, maybe a step and a half on the Tennessee defender, but it was a very poorly underthrown ball. So who knows? but yeah, it'd be they're gonna have to hit a over the top ball eventually. I don't I think obviously Very clear Oklahoma wants to keep everything in front of them and that's why their defense is so good 'cause they're just holding everybody. But Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Oklahoma's offense is averaging five point two a play. South Carolina's averaging six point three. South Carolina is averaging thirty-six points a game, which if that holds for the rest of the year, that will be the school leading points per game in a year for South Carolina. So shout out, Kendall Braz he's Andrew Wright: Yeah, shut up. Canon Stogner: been a massive improvement this year. And with what he's dealt with and how bad Lenoris has looked, to still score 36 a game with that offense is very impressive. Andrew Wright: It is, Canon Stogner: so yeah, the biggest thing that stuck out to me in this category was Lenores has thrown for sixteen hundred yards this year, or as a team, they've thrown for sixteen hundred yards this year. Oklahoma's thrown for sixteen as well. It's about a sixty yard difference, six, six, four, and then six hundred for Oklahoma. Sacolina's offense though has ran for fifteen hundred, and Oklahoma's offense has only ran for seven forty. So Andrew Wright: Jeez. Canon Stogner: that's over half of how many Oklahoma's ran for. So we'll see. Obviously, Soccerline wants to run the ball. But Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: yeah. Gotta beat the flu game. Got to. Andrew Wright: Yep, I have to. Gotta get past it. Canon Stogner: Yep. Of course they gotta win out. As Sarcon fans, we have high hopes. Don't know why, don't know where it came from, but as Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: high hopes, we have It's just how it is. So yeah, we want those high hopes to stay. The guy went out. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: all right, let's move on to number three Georgia versus number seventeen, Florida. We have Georgia is six and one coming off a bye week after their loss to Auburn. Florida's five and two. This game is played at Mercedes Benz. the spread is eleven and a half in favor of Georgia. injured. Do you think it's too much, too little? What? Andrew Wright: guess as of now, probably too little just based off what Georgia looked like the last time we saw him and that was getting upset as a number one team in the country on their home field by an unranked SEC team. So I guess they probably have lost a little bit of respect in terms of spread. It's still, it's crazy to see a top, Florida number 17. So a top 17 matchup between SEC opponents and it is a double digit spread. That's always kind of strange to see, but yeah, I would say that's probably a little too much right now. I would definitely probably bump it back down into single digits. Nobody would bat an eye if Georgia did come out and win 42 to 21 either. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Well here's the thing, it's considered a neutral sight game, although it is in Atlanta. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: I feel like if this game's played in Dallas, Texas, I feel like the spread's probably eight and a half. Andrew Wright: You think it's that if it's in Jacksonville where it usually is or no? Canon Stogner: I would say six and a half, seven and a half if it was in Jacksonville. If the game was in Dallas, Texas, I would say the spread be eight and a half. But I really think it's they're accounting for the home game. Like I said, I know it's neutral Andrew Wright: Yeah, and that's, yeah. Canon Stogner: sight, but it seems like they're accounting for the home game. but the glaring difference, both offenses have been lighting it up. You have forty-three points a game for Georgia compared to Florida's forty. but Florida's defense has given up twenty eight points compared to Georgia's sixteen. yeah, I think that number has even went down for Florida after the Texas game because we know how bad their quarterback is at Texas. I mean they're coming off a game with Jamel Jones beating them. have they announced who's starting Andrew Wright: Yeah, both of them are questionable. I don't, yeah, far as far as really banged up. Canon Stogner: Both of them are questionable. And they're coming off a bi week as well, right? Andrew Wright: Yeah, they're they're really banged up. have I think I want to say Singleton might be doubtful as well. One of those receivers or Bailey Bailey Stockton is out and then both the quarterbacks are questionable. Canon Stogner: Okay. it I imagine both of them will play. At least Tremel Jones. If if I had to pick one that was definitely gonna play, it'd be Tramel Jones. but I imagine both Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: of them are dressed out. It may be a mix of both. But I imagine Filo would get the start if he's healthy and out there. but we kinda talked about it last time after they beat Texas. This is like one of those games where a quarterback has a lot of pressure where they feel like they're Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: gonna play try to play clean football 'cause if not they know They have a backup. So Andrew Wright: Right. Canon Stogner: Georgia Least all time series fifty eight forty four. so Florida Trails by fourteen. I do think Florida will lose this game. And I honestly think it will be a whooping. I really do. Andrew Wright: It definitely has the potential to get to that kind of a desperation spot for Florida here with they lose this game. That's their third conference loss already. they would kind of, outside of the Ole Miss game, they would kind of roll up and shrink in all their big spots so far this season, I would say. They kind of lose lot respect. So yeah, I'm kind of leaning with you. Canon Stogner: That's right. Andrew Wright: I definitely think Georgia kind of wins this game and probably pretty handily. Canon Stogner: That's right. That's another thing of the flu game. Miss after they beat LSU, lost to Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: Florida. yeah, I just feel like Andrew Wright: And you know, you know, Kirby's go have that team fired up, ready to go after that loss and having a full extra week to kind of regroup. They'll come out fire and kind of try to prove a point like, hey, we're and I said it after that game, I thought they came out of that game, even with the loss, I thought they still like the best team in the country potentially. So yeah, I think they'll come out fire. Canon Stogner: Yeah, hey Tennessee fans. whenever you we say like teams beat themselves, it's usually like the Georgia game against Auburn was a like very good picture of what it means when you beat yourself. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: Like Georgia had so many dumb penalties on third downs where they would have gotten off the field. Or, you know, that dumb penalty that put Auburn in field goal range to win the game. That's what consider beating yourself. But blame it on the refs and other stuff that you can control yourself, like as a Tennessee, that's that doesn't count. We don't count those. so yeah. all right. Moving on to Minnesota and Indiana. Indiana is number four at seven and one. Minnesota's five and two receiving votes as well. Indiana's favored by twenty and a half. I think that spread is crazy. Andrew Wright: Yeah, way too many. Canon Stogner: Not good at all. I'll tell you what, I think Indiana or Fernando Mendoza, I don't really know who this is based at, but it feels like Indiana had broken up with their boyfriend. Fernando Mendoza's the boyfriend, now the ex boyfriend. And Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: like he was such a good guy that they missed him so much. Like you missed the ex boyfriend who was so great to you. and you lost him. it's not their fault. I mean, obviously he number one pick. He had to leave and won the Heisman and stuff. But it feels like Indiana's so stuck up on Fernando Mendoza and what he did. And rightfully so, winning your first national championship. But I feel like everybody as a college football fan base is waiting for that game where Indiana's gonna click and Josh Hoover's gonna, you know, light it up and be the guy that he was brought in to be. But it hasn't happened yet. We're eight games in and Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: now he's banged up and they're playing Minnesota. So yeah, I don't know what to expect, but I think twenty and a half Point spread is crazy. your thoughts? Andrew Wright: Yeah, I looked at that and was like, man, 20 and a half for a team that has just really struggled to score the ball. They haven't reached 20 points in either of last two games. They've got 15 against Ohio State and then took them overtime to get the 13 against Michigan. So that was my first all they've only combined for 28 in their last two games. Minnesota man, obviously there's some kind of belief in something here because college game day skipped out on Ohio State, Indiana and Bloomington a couple weeks ago and then decided to go here this week with. even with a top 25 matchup in the Big 12 with Arizona and Texas Tech, which we'll get to in a second. So there's some kind of belief in the air. Minnesota does have two upset wins already this year. They beat Michigan while Michigan was still ranked. And then they knocked off Iowa last week when Iowa was number 15 in the country. yeah, mean, they're two top 25 in conference upsets already. They only have one conference loss. I don't know if they have enough power power to get it done. Their quarterback, Drake Lindsay, little prone to turnovers. He's got nine touchdowns and six interceptions. Even though Hoover hasn't really had that explosive game, he does only have the one interception. And that was last week, really high completion percentage. So I think he'll take care of the ball enough for them to get out of there. But I think it'll be a very stereotypical Indiana game this year, Canon Stogner: Mm-hmm. Andrew Wright: where they struggle and struggle and struggle. And then they barely pull away at the end and get out of there with another win. But yeah, 20 and a half is way too many points. I think Minnesota will hang around for quite some time. Canon Stogner: Yeah. We'll see. I feel like PJ Fleck kinda always has that one game or two or three Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: games a year. That's honestly kept him his job his last two or three years. but obviously coming off a big win last week, don't know what to expect. But all right, moving on to Arizona and Texas Tech. Arizona is ranked at number twenty two. Don't know the last time they were ranked in football, but I'd love to know that stat. Andrew Wright: See you right here in a sec. Canon Stogner: Arizona number twenty-two, Texas Tech number thirteen coming off a loss to Cincinnati. both are six and one. spread is currently three and a half in Texas Tech's favor, over under at fifty-four and a half. both teams are averaging thirty-six points a game. Texas Tech has allowed twenty points a game compared to Arizona's sixteen. So that is probably the most surpr surprising stat to me tonight. Is that Arizona has given up less points a game than Texas Tech. and Arizona's also thrown for 310 a game compared to Texas Tech thrown for 230. Very big game for Arizona. and Andrew, we kind of talked about it before the season, but you know, the two biggest conferences we were high on were SEC and Big Ten. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: I think the SEC is still there. I think it's Andrew Wright: Yeah. Canon Stogner: just a doll fight right now. I think the Big Ten has taken a step back. And I think the Big Twelve has taken that spot. And it's probably the most anticipated conference race right now because you have five teams that are you have four teams with one loss. Utah's the only undefeated team in the conference, and then you have Houston, who is three and two, and Houston's lost two good games. They lost two Texas Tech, like the second or third game of the year. And then lost at Utah last week. So Houston is three and two in the conference, six and two overall, and they're still ranked number 18. You have Oklahoma, who's five and two with the embarrassing loss to Tulsa, but three and one in the conference. Texas Tech is three and one and six and one overall. Arizona three and one, six and one. BYU three and one, six and one. And then you have Utah at four and and then we could also talk about Cincinnati. Cincinnati's coming off the win against Texas Tech. So incredible race going on right now. and then at the very bottom of the list, and I didn't have to do this, but I'm going to. You have Deion, Andrew Wright: Hahaha. Canon Stogner: you have Deion Sanders who's and four in the conference and two and five overall. I'm sick and tired of him also, but we don't have to talk about him because he's irrelevant. so very big game in Big Twelve. Probably the biggest one of the weekend, but we'll go ahead and move on to the next one. We have Utah number six versus Cincinnati. Cincinnati Do they fall for the flu game this week? Andrew Wright: Probably, I would say so. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Probably. They are playing at home, five and two. Utah's seven and they're favored by six and a half. both teams are scoring thirty five points per game. Utah's defense is allowed only fourteen points a game compared to Cincinnati averaging twenty six. Utah sends a lot of pressure. I haven't really watched Cincinnati this year. Honestly haven't watched them since like years ago, but Andrew Wright: Since that's my variable, sir. Canon Stogner: Yeah, there's Desm Desmond Ritter. That's what I was So yeah. All time series is only they've only played each other twice. They're one and one. So I think Utah gets it done. It would be great for the Big Twelve and College football if Cincinnati goes in and gets this win. Andrew Wright: Yeah, and I think something for the Big 12, before last week, before we had the Texas Tech getting upset, before BYU getting upset, there was a world where, and it was very unlikely it was going to happen, but there was a world where both those teams win last week, Houston upset Utah, and we could have had four teams at the end of the year in the Big 12, they all won out, that were 11-1. And like, It would have been hard to really leave any of them out of the playoff. That'll get a little easier now. I guess it could, it still could happen with the way the schedule's on up. But yeah, very, like you said, very highly anticipated conference with that Arizona, Texas tech game. And then now, yeah, Utah, Cincinnati, we've kind of highlighted all year. And this isn't a noon game that we've talked about, but like these road games have been tough this year. Like no matter, last year, like same conference last week, nobody expects BYE to go into UCF and lose. Like nobody thinks that's going to happen. And then boom, a week after they were like one of the best teams in the country, they lose to UCF in a mid afternoon game on the road when nobody expected it. So Utah's got to be kind of very weary and very careful of that. I'm with you. I think they'll get it done. I think Devin Dempere has been really good. We kind of talked about him in the preseason. We went through our QB rankings, really liked him. We're really high on them before the season. See, I think they find a way to go in there, avoid what has been a crazy season altogether. and they find a way to get out of there and remain one of the only two or three undefeated teams left in the country. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I've said it probably two or three times this year, but the teams that play at noon on the road have a massive advantage. And South Andrew Wright: you Canon Stogner: Carolina, I mean, played at twelve, twelve forty five against Florida and won that game. Who was the other noon game they had? I think that might be it. Auburn travels to Ole Miss this week at twelve forty five. Andrew Wright: This Utah game is also like a humongous look ahead spot because they have BYU next week. Canon Stogner: Yeah. Andrew Wright: They could very well get caught up in that too. So they got to be really wary of kind of looking ahead as well. Canon Stogner: Yeah. all right, then we have Ohio State versus US C. I think this was one of the games we talked about. I'd love to go back and look at our top five most anticipated games this year. Andrew Wright: Yeah, that would be odd. No way could find that right now. That'd be hilarious. Canon Stogner: Well you don't have to right now. we'll get it we'll get it towards the end. actually try to find that while I do this. Andrew Wright: Okay. Canon Stogner: Iowa State number two, USC is not ranked anymore. Sarcona actually received more votes than then this week. but they are six and two. Ohio State is favored by six and a half on the road, although probably the easiest place to play. this game Pretty underwhelming going into this week because of USC not being able to, you know, show up for the big game. But I would say probably the coach with the most pressure this week is Lincoln Riley. With Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Yep. Canon Stogner: Ohio State not having Julian Sayon. You're playing a backup quarterback and you know, you still have JD Maiava who we were very high on before the season. And you're six and two. So, I mean and you are you you Played a close game with the Oregon. You lost a tough one last week to Wisconsin, but it was a tough game, tough road environment on the road, at night. But yeah, feels like this is a must win for Lincoln Riley. I don't know if they fire him at six and three if they lose this game, but I do think it could have a impact on what the decision is at the end of the year. Andrew Wright: Yeah, if they can't get this done at home, I I do think it's hard to say this when they come off a loss like they did last week with just a complete let down coming off of by week. I do think it's a bit crazy. They're a six and a half point dog just because of a high state not having Julian saying like we saw Luke Fahey play and we still really don't know who's going to start for them either him or Tavian St. Clair. I just think their QB issues should make this spread a little bit closer. But yeah, 1000 % must win. I also don't think they fire him if they lose this game. Still at six and three, still with a slight chance to get in somehow if it were to work out in their favor. But we've seen the past, Lincoln Riley can't win the big one. It's so hard to pick him in this spot too. I want to so bad just because I don't think Ohio State's gonna be able to move the ball very well. But I just can't trust that guy in a big spot. So I think those fans leave Saturday night severely disappointed. Canon Stogner: Hold on, hold on. We do have breaking news. And I know this is not, this is a college football podcast, but Jacob Mizarowski, the Miz, the flamethrower for the Brewers, is being checked at right now by the trainers. And there's not a runner Andrew Wright: What's that score? Canon Stogner: on base. So I wasn't watching. I don't think it was a deflected hit. Like he got hit off the bat. Andrew Wright: Okay. Canon Stogner: So you can only imagine what the injury probably is, which is Andrew Wright: That's still two to nothing. Canon Stogner: four to nothing. Probably an arm injury. Maybe one of the Andrew Wright: So say look. Canon Stogner: most predictable injuries in history of sports, but tough blow for them. Don't know what happened. I'm watching the replayer. Andrew Wright: Does he look severely hurt? Canon Stogner: No, he doesn't look really hurt. It honestly could be a leg thing though, because he keeps complaining about the mound. Andrew Wright: He's always been complaining about that darn mouth. Canon Stogner: He's jumping up and down. I think it was a lower body injury. I don't know. Keep an eye on that. But continue, sorry. Andrew Wright: I'll out in Ohio State. Also, I found my top five games of the season. These are, they're not as bad as I thought they would be. Canon Stogner: He's back pitching. Andrew Wright: I had a Ohio State, Texas, Miami, Notre Dame, LSU, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, BYU, and Oklahoma, Michigan. Canon Stogner: Wait, slow down, slow down. Andrew Wright: Ohio State, Texas, my number one game of the year. Canon Stogner: Okay. Andrew Wright: Miami at Notre Dame, number two. Canon Stogner: We haven't had that one yet. Andrew Wright: LSU, Ole Miss was number three. Canon Stogner: That was a good one. Andrew Wright: Notre Dame, BYU was number four. Canon Stogner: That was a good one. Andrew Wright: And then Oklahoma, Michigan was my fifth best game of the year. Canon Stogner: Horrific. Andrew, Andrew Wright: Yeah, so I don't have you or something. Canon Stogner: you're four you went four and one though. All those Andrew Wright: Yes. Canon Stogner: all those games are still like it matters. Now, granted, Texas and Ohio State, I think if both of them went out, they'd both make it. Notre Dame BYU, they'll both probably make it. Ole Miss and LSU. Andrew Wright: Yeah, just a bit niche there on the... Canon Stogner: wait, he is coming out. He threw one more pitch and came out the game. I think. Andrew Wright: Best wishes, Jacob Mazarowski. Canon Stogner: Miss. all right, do you have my list? Andrew Wright: I do not. I was flipping back through here and looking at the not. Canon Stogner: All right, I'm gonna move on to Wisconsin versus Iowa. Andrew Wright: Hopefully, this five will find some form. Canon Stogner: This game is at Iowa. this is a pretty cool game. I won't watch it. Very boring game to watch, but I'm saying it's a pretty cool game because it's probably two of the most underrated stadiums in college football. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Okay. Canon Stogner: two very big, yeah, passionate fan bases. Both teams are five and two. Iowa is favored by three and a half. Wisconsin's coming off the win against USC. the over under is thirty-six and a half. Both teams are scoring twenty-eight points a game. both teams right around this two hundred yard and passing and rushing for one eighty is Iowa and 150 for Wisconsin. Very, you know, slug, fast, physical. Who's the most who wants it more game? What do you have? Andrew Wright: Yeah, a little disappointed in Iowa the way they played last week kind of before the season highlighted them as hey like a sneaky potential CFP threat if they can get through that three-week stretch we laid out which I believe was Washington Ohio State in Michigan was their three game stretch and I kind of said hey if they get through this at one and two they can win out and they can get in or they can they went two and one in that stretch and they still have two losses already so that's very they just Canon Stogner: Who was the who was the second loss? Andrew Wright: they just lost to Minnesota And then they lost Ohio State, Minnesota. So yeah, they got through that three game stretch that I thought would kind of define their season. like after that, I'm like, all right, like boom, I was looking great. They got the whole season in front of them and then they go out there and lay an egg. Last week it's Minnesota. I don't think they'll be able to bounce back from that. I think Wisconsin is really good actually. Fickle's got them boys rolling again. They got the huge win last week. They beat Notre Dame earlier, not Notre Dame, they beat Penn State earlier in the season. So yeah, I'll take Wisconsin on the road to get it done. I don't. quite understand why I was favored. So I'll take Wisconsin in the points and Luke Fickle to get into the big win and that would knock out. Canon Stogner: Well, it's it's at Iowa. What do you mean you don't know why they're favored? Andrew Wright: One team's ranked, the other team's not. One team has got two counters losses, one team has one counters loss. Canon Stogner: Well I South Carolina was ranked and they were unranked. Andrew Wright: I agree, I didn't know why they were favored either. They did, I agree. I would might win, I would might win too. Canon Stogner: I know but they won. Which by the way, by the way, let me let me get into this. And hopefully, if my dad listens, he'll probably agree with me, or maybe he'll call me out. Hopefully somebody agrees with me. But South Carolina has been absolutely screwed with the game sc or times, times of Andrew Wright: Check out that. Canon Stogner: games. because it used to be every team was guaranteed two night games a year. Andrew Wright: Yep. Canon Stogner: Conference games, two night conference games a year. don't know. I guess I thought the rule was it was two night home games. I don't know if it turned changed to you just had two night games, whether or not it was at home or on the road. But South Carolina has only played one night game this year against Alabama, and that was on the road. So they have two games left at home against Texas AM and Georgia. The Texas AM game was scheduled to be either from 3 30. or six through eight. So it was a flex game that was either going to be three thirty or six or later. And it got scheduled for 330 or 4, 3 to 4. So that means that South Call only has one more home game left. And it's also a flex game against Georgia. Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: So if they don't get a night game at all this year, it's a letdown embarrassment to the SEC that you're not showing off one of your best stadium atmospheres at night and it's also a huge disadvantage to South Carolina to not have a like to be able to show recruits and stuff that 'cause that stuff Andrew Wright: Yeah, I hear it. Canon Stogner: matters. And I know the night the game against Tennessee ended at night when it was dark and stuff, but it started at three thirty or four o'clock, whatever time it started. So hopefully they do get a night game against Georgia. But yeah, I can't believe they've only had they've had zero night games. And night games is games that start six through eight or whatever the case may be. So I don't know if the rule changed. I thought it was a rule, not sure if it was. I thought it was. and then it's also kind of weird because they moved from eight to nine games this year. So that gives everybody in the SEC one more home game. So don't really understand it. But yeah, that was kind of what I wanted to get into about that. All right. Let's go ahead and give our top five picks. It's been two weeks. I think I won the last one. Andrew Wright: Let's see here you Yes, you did you went three and two in the last one and I went two and three so you did one last one Canon Stogner: All right, so I'll go first. All right, pretty easy one. I am taking Arizona minus three and a half or or plus three and a half versus Texas Tech. It is a noon game at Texas Tech coming off a loss. I'm taking Arizona. Andrew Wright: I'll go to here first one we touched on it a few minutes ago. Give me Minnesota plus 20 and a half against Indiana. Just think that's way too many points. And then I will follow that up with Northwestern plus three and a half against Oregon. One of those games again, I don't quite understand why Oregon's favorite. I think the wrong team is favored. So I'll take Northwestern to cover and win outright. Canon Stogner: I guess so. Andrew Wright: Oregon. Canon Stogner: Okay. alright. I am going to take another noon game. SMU on the road against Syracuse. They are favored by ten and a half. I want them over that. SMU over Syracuse. and then I will take Give me Boise State ten and a half versus Texas State. At home night game. What is Idaho a what is that a mountain time or West Coast? Andrew Wright: Idaho's mountain town, yeah. Canon Stogner: So this game's starting at nine o'clock? wait, Mountain Time's two hours or one? Andrew Wright: throughout the hours behind us. Canon Stogner: So it's at eight. Or no. It's on ten on the app. Andrew Wright: What time's the Durnan game? So that's 8 o'clock. No. Canon Stogner: You just said two hours behind us. Andrew Wright: It is. Canon Stogner: So it'd be nine. Andrew Wright: The game is at 10 o'clock on ESPN. Two hours behind us is eight o'clock, Cannon. my God. Canon Stogner: You're right, you're right, sorry. Sorry, I was using the West Coast. I was like saying if it starts here at ten, it would start west coast at seven, which puts two hours. Andrew Wright: Okay, okay. Thank you for the clarity there. My next tune. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I'm sorry. I don't that was a total brain fart. That might have been the most embarrassing thing I've had on here. Andrew Wright: My next two, I'll go Miami minus 14 against North Carolina. North Carolina's actually hung around in the kind of previous two matchups. I think they've even won a couple the last few years these teams have played. Not this year, Miami kind of a lot to prove, well not a lot to prove. It all they did last week to pit, just whatever they wanted to. And I kind of see that going the same way. And then I'll follow that up. I'll take UCF minus one and a half against Baylor. You have UCF coming off a humongous win last week. You have Baylor, a team that just fired their head coach. Really not a whole lot to play for rest of the year. So I'll take UCF minus one and a half in that spot. Canon Stogner: Okay. About an easy one. I know he is questionable for the game. I don't know if he's been ruled out yet, but I am taking Kansas State over Colorado. Colorado is favored by one and a half. I don't understand that one. They something's Andrew Wright: Wow. Canon Stogner: wrong with Avery Johnson. I know he was questionable or doubtful, honestly. Andrew Wright: Avery Johnson could play left-handed and Colorado shouldn't be favored. All right, last pick, who you got? Canon Stogner: Give me Georgia twelve and a half. Yeah. I love my pick. he's been ruled out. Eleven minutes ago he was ruled out. Andrew Wright: You can change it. Canon Stogner: Am I allowed to change? Andrew Wright: I'll allow it. Canon Stogner: Colorado's played four quarterbacks this year though. I don't know who I don't know who Kansas State's backup is. So I am allowed to change it. Is that okay with the committee? Andrew Wright: Yes, I'll allow a change. Canon Stogner: Alright. Don't love that. Who does Clemson play? Does Clemson have a bar? Andrew Wright: Farastate is six and a half point favorite. Canon Stogner: Give me Florida State. Andrew Wright: Smart move. Canon Stogner: That's it, yeah, give me first eight. Andrew Wright: I will round us out. I'll take the fight and Jesse Legree Oregon State Beavers minus five and a half against Fresno State. So to recap us there, have Minnesota plus 20 and a half against Indiana, Northwestern plus three and a half over Oregon, Miami minus 14 against North Carolina, UCF minus one and a half against Baylor, Oregon State minus five and a half against Fresno State. And then you have Arizona plus three and a half against Texas Tech, SMU minus 10 and a half against Syracuse, Boise State minus 10 and a half over Texas State, Georgia minus 12 and a half over Florida, and Florida State minus six and a half over Clemson. Canon Stogner: And what are our what's our record? Andrew Wright: You are 20 and 15. I am 19, 15 and 1. Yeah, we are. Canon Stogner: Pretty good, man. I'm sitting here looking at Oregon State's schedule, and that's embarrassing. They opened up against Houston and lost, and then they Andrew Wright: Mm-hmm. Canon Stogner: played Texas Tech the next week and lost. They started out and two. Their next five games are on a five game winning streak. They have beat Montana, UTEP, Colorado State, San Diego State, Andrew Wright: Yep. Mm-hmm. Yep. Okay. Canon Stogner: and Washington State. Andrew Wright: Yeah, I don't play. I don't play. Canon Stogner: So now they got Fresno State, then they play Texas State, and then they have Boise. Andrew Wright: That Boise game will be humongous for a of sick purposes. Canon Stogner: Yes, it will. all right. Well that is the preview of our week nine Saturday slate. thank you guys for tuning in. We only have s a few weeks left. Andrew Wright: Yeah. Great. Canon Stogner: and then one other thing, I am basketball season is starting up, so I will be busy with that. We are still gonna try to put out episodes every Monday and Thursday, but I have a wife I gotta attend to And basketball team that I have to tend to. Andrew Wright: Shout out head coach Kenis Nogger. Canon Stogner: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Thank you. Fair force, middle school, basketball hornets. We are the Hornets. Andrew Wright: Own the come up. Right man in charge. Canon Stogner: Yeah, we'll see. Don't have the team yet. do not have the team yet. We have triouts coming up. But hopefully we'll have a good squad. I know one thing, we're gonna compete. We're gonna play hard. Andrew Wright: That's right. You can play to the last whistle. Canon Stogner: Yeah, I said I told him in my interview. I was like, listen, I'm not I'm not ever gonna guarantee win because you know me. I don't care if it's freaking the Panthers playing, you know, Utah State. I'm not ever gonna guarantee a win. But I will guarantee our team's gonna play the hardest. Andrew Wright: That's right, absolutely. Canon Stogner: I hope. Andrew Wright: That's like you said about the Panthers, man. You don't leave the bank without being beat up for your next game. Canon Stogner: Yeah, yeah. yeah, you might win, but you're not gonna be healthy. But I'm not saying that for middle school basketball. It's horrible Andrew Wright: That's right. Canon Stogner: look. Horrible look. all right. Thank you guys for tuning in. Like, comment, subscribe. I'm pretty sure every episode we've posted, Andrew, we've had at least one subscriber. So Andrew Wright: Yep, I think so. Canon Stogner: doing a good job there. all right, that's it for the Saturday slate. We'll see ya.
