- 0:00Speaker 1: On the Bechdel Cast, the questions asked if movies have
- 0:04Speaker 1: women and them, are all their discussions just boyfriends and husbands,
- 0:08Speaker 1: or do they have individualism the patriarchy? Zeph and Beast
- 0:12Speaker 1: start changing it with the Bechdel Cast.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hey Jamie, it's Caitlin. What's your credit card information and
- 0:20Speaker 2: your Social Security number?
- 0:23Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll give that to you. Okay, I'll give that
- 0:25Speaker 3: to you. Yeah, write it down, Write it down over
- 0:28Speaker 3: the phone. You're get wild, It's ready. I still do
- 0:31Speaker 3: that sometimes give it. I should be left in the past,
- 0:34Speaker 3: like make a purchase over the phone. Every once in
- 0:37Speaker 3: a while, you have to give someone your credit card
- 0:39Speaker 3: number over the phone.
- 0:40Speaker 2: WHOA, I haven't done that in like, I don't know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: probably ten years.
- 0:44Speaker 3: I feel like it's mostly bet On behalf of my
- 0:46Speaker 3: mom or something where she still like makes purchases and
- 0:49Speaker 3: the like. It's so interesting how boomers are always think
- 0:53Speaker 3: they're like credit card numbers are being stolen, but they're
- 0:56Speaker 3: the ones saying them out loud on the phone, Like
- 1:00Speaker 3: I don't think they're really taking care. I would give
- 1:02Speaker 3: you my credit card number.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Well, welcome to the Bechel. Feel free to send us
- 1:11Speaker 3: your credit card number. You can definitely trust us.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Trust us.
- 1:15Speaker 3: My name is Shamie Loftus.
- 1:16Speaker 2: My name is Caitlin Deonte. This is our show where
- 1:19Speaker 2: we examine movies through an intersectional feminist lens, using the
- 1:23Speaker 2: Bechdel test as a jumping off point. Jamie, what's that.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Well, there's so many versions of this test. It is
- 1:31Speaker 3: a media metric created by a dear friend of the show,
- 1:34Speaker 3: maybe even our best friend. We've we spent two minutes
- 1:39Speaker 3: with her in person. She's our dearest friend and we
- 1:42Speaker 3: love our friend Alison. It's too whole minutes. Yes week
- 1:47Speaker 3: in Sacramento, a couple of weeks ago.
- 1:49Speaker 4: I know you guys hung out, but like she's your
- 1:52Speaker 4: best friend. Now, yeahh did you guys talk about Eddie
- 1:55Speaker 4: Santa Claus movies or eddiething like.
- 1:58Speaker 3: You don't understand, you don't understand.
- 2:02Speaker 4: I'm kind of like the Robin or in a more
- 2:06Speaker 4: gender Ermie says, back girl of the back as. And
- 2:09Speaker 4: now all of a sudden, I find out that Alice
- 2:13Speaker 4: Impactel can just Lotchida talk to you for twenty minutes
- 2:18Speaker 4: and not even seem interested. I saw the picture.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Okay, look wow, And all of a sudden, she's your
- 2:26Speaker 2: best friend.
- 2:27Speaker 3: She's our best friend, great and our defense. We've been
- 2:30Speaker 3: begging her to be our friend for nine years.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Grace. If it makes you feel any better, you're our
- 2:35Speaker 2: bestest friend.
- 2:37Speaker 4: I mean, I guess. I guess. I would like to
- 2:41Speaker 4: say that makes me feel better, But I think the
- 2:44Speaker 4: truth is I'm gonna go to become a banelike character
- 2:48Speaker 4: for the podcast.
- 2:51Speaker 3: Come back with the mask and.
- 2:54Speaker 4: The mad man definition. Let me see dearly yearly what. Okay,
- 3:07Speaker 4: that's too much. I thought it would look more like
- 3:09Speaker 4: a bane mask.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Or something, just like the Baines's voice is like right
- 3:16Speaker 3: up there in the pantheon of like voices that haunt
- 3:21Speaker 3: me from high school. Yeah, just be social studies class
- 3:25Speaker 3: is full of teenagers doing the bain voice.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Okay, I'm sorry to disagree with you, JB. But the
- 3:32Speaker 4: Dark Knight Prizes came out two years after you graduated
- 3:36Speaker 4: in high school.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Okay, maybe I look whatever college college.
- 3:41Speaker 4: Really, I'm just telling you because I took my entire
- 3:46Speaker 4: family to see the Dark Knight Rises as like a
- 3:50Speaker 4: nice thing. I don't know why.
- 3:52Speaker 2: I thought.
- 3:53Speaker 4: I was like, I'm gonna do this nice thing, and
- 3:55Speaker 4: I hated it.
- 3:57Speaker 2: It's not a very good movie.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I didn't see it in theaters because I was sick
- 4:00Speaker 3: of the voice, which is why I didn't see so
- 4:03Speaker 3: many movies when they so Bane's in the third one,
- 4:06Speaker 3: not the second one.
- 4:07Speaker 4: Bain is in the third one. Okay, and I'll tell
- 4:09Speaker 4: you this, Tom Hardy rocks it. But the problem with
- 4:13Speaker 4: that movie is they they don't let him just be
- 4:16Speaker 4: the villain, you know, like there's gotta be this tall,
- 4:20Speaker 4: y'all ghoul character that pops up.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Oh, that's right.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Also, it was like, so they like make Batman lose
- 4:28Speaker 4: all of his money, and like how they do that
- 4:31Speaker 4: is Baine just like takes over the stock market and
- 4:34Speaker 4: presses a button and.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Then takes his credit card information. He takes his credit
- 4:40Speaker 2: card information and his social Security number, and he bleeds
- 4:44Speaker 2: him dry.
- 4:44Speaker 3: He does what Georgia did to Bury. Wow, it all
- 4:49Speaker 3: comes around.
- 4:50Speaker 2: We're talking about Punch Drunk Love today, not Dark Knight Rises.
- 4:54Speaker 4: My favorite movie, my favorite movie of all time is
- 4:58Speaker 4: Punch Drunk Glove.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Well, listen, listeners, you can google what the Bechdel test is.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Because we didn't get we didn't get that far.
- 5:05Speaker 2: We just passed it until we started talking about Bane.
- 5:08Speaker 4: Until the Bechdel test posits that if two women are
- 5:14Speaker 4: in a movie and they talk about something I find
- 5:17Speaker 4: personally interesting, then it's good.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Yes. Wait, so, so Punch Trunk Love is your favorite movie?
- 5:24Speaker 3: Tell us about your history with this movie.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I've seen Punch Drunk Love probably more than I've
- 5:30Speaker 4: seen any other movie, except for maybe Muppet Christmas Carol
- 5:35Speaker 4: or the Rankin Bass like Specials if you want to
- 5:38Speaker 4: call them movies, or maybe Elf. Okay, outside of the
- 5:42Speaker 4: Christmas category, have any Christmas movie?
- 5:45Speaker 2: Well, what about the Santa Claus?
- 5:47Speaker 4: That's true? Also, Actually I didn't. Oh, yes, okay, I'll
- 5:53Speaker 4: let you introduce me now.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Oh, it's okay. Our guest is a writer, a comedian.
- 5:58Speaker 2: She's in the upcoming movie We Are Pat and you
- 6:02Speaker 2: remember her from our episodes on the Santa Claus franchise.
- 6:07Speaker 2: It's Grace freyd Hi.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Everybody, we're really kind of like branching out this time.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I didn't even really realize that this is our first
- 6:16Speaker 3: non Santa Claus related endeavor.
- 6:18Speaker 4: It is our first non Santa Claus related endeavor.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Check in, How is everybody feeling about this?
- 6:24Speaker 2: It's strange.
- 6:27Speaker 4: I do think I am shocked. I still haven't seen
- 6:32Speaker 4: the second season of The Santa Claus.
- 6:35Speaker 2: That is shocking, I know, and I do.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I haven't seen it either. I feel like were we
- 6:39Speaker 3: to watch it, we would still be like in the
- 6:41Speaker 3: first hundred people that have seen it, Yeah, they didn't
- 6:46Speaker 3: advertise it at all, so.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Certainly in the first hundred people that have had a
- 6:50Speaker 4: conversation about it, yes, you know, certainly. It's really the slop.
- 6:57Speaker 4: I mean, this is getting me down. I think that
- 7:00Speaker 4: they so much slop this movie series that I think
- 7:03Speaker 4: even the third one was so fun. You know, it
- 7:06Speaker 4: was weird, but it was so fun. Aesthetically, nothing I think.
- 7:10Speaker 4: What kills me about the show The Santa Clauses is
- 7:13Speaker 4: it just not shot like a movie. It's just shot
- 7:16Speaker 4: like slop.
- 7:17Speaker 3: You know it's it does yet it looks very ai.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I don't know. Although much like The Santa Claus Punch,
- 7:26Speaker 3: Trunck Love stars a popular nineties comedian taking a turn
- 7:31Speaker 3: and trying something new out like being in a prestige
- 7:36Speaker 3: rom com or being Santa Claus two pass.
- 7:41Speaker 4: That is so true.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It's the parallels are striking.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Speaking of two roads, I remember a time, the time
- 7:50Speaker 4: that my mom brought me to see Little Fokkers in
- 7:53Speaker 4: or it was maybe Meet the Fokers. It was Meet
- 7:56Speaker 4: the Fokers, not Little Foker's. And Hunstream Glove was out
- 7:59Speaker 4: at the same time, and I really wanted to go
- 8:02Speaker 4: see Punch Drunk Love because I loved Adam Sandler, and
- 8:07Speaker 4: my mom would not let me go see it. She said,
- 8:09Speaker 4: look to adult and then she brings me to meet
- 8:11Speaker 4: the Fockers, which is just all Penis jokes. The whole time.
- 8:14Speaker 3: I was like, I don't have to meet the Fockers.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Is the alternative?
- 8:18Speaker 4: She wasn't wrong, but but I do wonder what my
- 8:23Speaker 4: life would be like. I thought, I think about this
- 8:26Speaker 4: someone often if she had let me see Punch Drunk
- 8:29Speaker 4: Love with her, because I think I would have even
- 8:32Speaker 4: been taken with it at that age. I would I
- 8:35Speaker 4: think I was like eight or nine. I think I
- 8:37Speaker 4: would have been really taken with it, you know, because
- 8:41Speaker 4: it's a I don't know, it's the most special film
- 8:45Speaker 4: in the world to me. It just it's a movie that,
- 8:51Speaker 4: you know, I think that I can't. I can't like
- 8:57Speaker 4: this is gonna sound crazy, like it's something that I
- 8:59Speaker 4: would say is a joke, but it's one hundred percent
- 9:02Speaker 4: sincere Barry Egan. Adam Sandler's character in Punchdrunk Love is
- 9:09Speaker 4: the character I most relate to, I think, in maybe
- 9:12Speaker 4: all of fiction. And it's because, you know, when I
- 9:18Speaker 4: first saw this movie, I was eighteen, and I had
- 9:21Speaker 4: to watch it for a film class and I had
- 9:23Speaker 4: to do a shot breakdown of the whole movie. So
- 9:27Speaker 4: I had to watch it again and again and again
- 9:29Speaker 4: and again, and then I had to write my final
- 9:31Speaker 4: project about the diegetic versus non diegetic sound in the film.
- 9:39Speaker 4: And I think it really taught me about stories and
- 9:43Speaker 4: like the different components of a I mean like it
- 9:48Speaker 4: made me appreciate it. After that I did that, it
- 9:51Speaker 4: was hard to really hate a movie ever, you know,
- 9:54Speaker 4: like will you get such an appreciation for the mix
- 9:58Speaker 4: of it all? You know? And I mean I think
- 10:02Speaker 4: that I wouldn't love Megalopolis if I didn't see Punch
- 10:06Speaker 4: Drunk Love one hundred times.
- 10:07Speaker 3: First, okay, okay, it's at the eleven minute mark Megalopolis
- 10:13Speaker 3: was mentioned. I was, okay that I was really creous
- 10:17Speaker 3: because what we when you were originally going to come
- 10:20Speaker 3: on late last year, it was going to be Megalopolis.
- 10:23Speaker 3: And then when we finally scheduled it was Punchdrunk Love,
- 10:27Speaker 3: and I was like, do I bring up Megalopolis? And
- 10:29Speaker 3: then I was like, no, Grace will on her own,
- 10:32Speaker 3: and there it is. There's no way Megalopolis will not
- 10:35Speaker 3: come up.
- 10:38Speaker 4: It's it's it's we'll get more to Megalopolis. But a
- 10:43Speaker 4: movie I genuinely love.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Also, this is ultimately about Megalopolis.
- 10:47Speaker 4: This is all everything. Well, the thing is, everything's kind
- 10:50Speaker 4: of about Megalopolis because everything is about the future. Oh
- 10:54Speaker 4: you know it's lead back, yes, but like in a
- 10:59Speaker 4: way all roads duly to me by so Punch Trunk Club.
- 11:08Speaker 4: I'm seeing and this point of my life when my
- 11:14Speaker 4: brain is falling apart, I'm having these huge manic spikes.
- 11:19Speaker 4: I'm losing a lot of friends. My bipolar disorder started
- 11:24Speaker 4: to really set in when I was like sixteen seventeen,
- 11:28Speaker 4: and it reached a real fever pitch by my first
- 11:30Speaker 4: year of college. You know, I'm having these experiences where
- 11:36Speaker 4: I'm like not remembering things I've said, and like, I
- 11:40Speaker 4: have these moments of such intense emotion that are coupled
- 11:45Speaker 4: with long stretches of I'm just kind of in my
- 11:50Speaker 4: room and I'm being chill, and I and I'm kind
- 11:53Speaker 4: of feeling like, well, why why can't people see me
- 11:57Speaker 4: as this person who wants to being nice, you know,
- 12:04Speaker 4: And I can't stop drink. Drinking is a big part
- 12:07Speaker 4: of it, and using is a big part of it,
- 12:09Speaker 4: and it's just out of control. And so I'm spending
- 12:14Speaker 4: these long stretches just in my dorm room too, because
- 12:18Speaker 4: I feel like I'm scared of interacting with people and
- 12:22Speaker 4: scared of I just don't know what my emotions are
- 12:26Speaker 4: gonna be and how they're gonna shoot. And I've had
- 12:28Speaker 4: that kind of since I was a kid, but it
- 12:29Speaker 4: got to this really bad place, and I'm like seeing
- 12:35Speaker 4: my therapist a few times a week. I'm trying different medications,
- 12:40Speaker 4: and some of these medications have really harsh side effects,
- 12:43Speaker 4: you know, Like I try Abilify once and I'm like
- 12:46Speaker 4: literally drooling all the time. I'm having these intense panic attacks.
- 12:53Speaker 4: And also I'm kind of being a dick because I'm
- 12:56Speaker 4: like dealing with all of this and I just don't,
- 13:00Speaker 4: you know, this was me at a big like a
- 13:03Speaker 4: big bottom, and I look back, you know, I'm someone
- 13:06Speaker 4: in recovery. I look back at different bottoms I've had,
- 13:10Speaker 4: and I definitely the drinking and using was part of it.
- 13:14Speaker 4: But I think the big thing was I'm being hit
- 13:16Speaker 4: with bipolar one, this huge, huge mental health disorder that
- 13:20Speaker 4: I think people are very glib about off it, you know,
- 13:23Speaker 4: or people call themselves by polar Yeah, we all know this,
- 13:26Speaker 4: people do that online. Yeah, But bipolar one is I
- 13:32Speaker 4: think it's very hard to understand what mania is, like
- 13:37Speaker 4: like medical mania, if you haven't been in it, you know,
- 13:40Speaker 4: and then you snap out of it, You're like, why
- 13:43Speaker 4: did I act like that? And there's not like the
- 13:45Speaker 4: reason is you were manic, you know, But that's hard
- 13:50Speaker 4: to get across to other people that are also eighteen
- 13:52Speaker 4: and figuring stuff out. You know, I was sick. I
- 13:57Speaker 4: was not not unleathium yet, which ended up being the
- 14:00Speaker 4: thing that really helped. And if anybody is listening to
- 14:04Speaker 4: this and it's afraid of trying with me, I'm like,
- 14:08Speaker 4: I was because you've heard a million bad stories about it. Well,
- 14:13Speaker 4: you know. So that's the thing that if you do
- 14:15Speaker 4: have bipolar, what if you are keep having menic episodes,
- 14:19Speaker 4: give it a shot, you know, because it's this thing
- 14:22Speaker 4: that like if you if you do have the deficit
- 14:25Speaker 4: in your head when you start taking it. It's night
- 14:27Speaker 4: and day, you know, after a few weeks, and you
- 14:30Speaker 4: get through through through that. But also, since I was
- 14:33Speaker 4: a kid, I had problems with emotional spikes to some degrees,
- 14:36Speaker 4: and I always had this feeling of like just being
- 14:41Speaker 4: so put upon, and so it was hard for me
- 14:45Speaker 4: to take responsibility for the consequences of those spikes or
- 14:51Speaker 4: tantrums or whatever you want to call them, because my
- 14:54Speaker 4: life felt so hard that I'm like, don't you see
- 14:58Speaker 4: how shitty everything is? Just ignore that, you know. I
- 15:03Speaker 4: never let that be. And Punch Trump Glove is this
- 15:08Speaker 4: film that has this character Barry Egan in it that
- 15:12Speaker 4: is just so sweet and so has closed himself off
- 15:16Speaker 4: to the world, mostly in my interpretation from his acknowledgement
- 15:22Speaker 4: that he has this anger and this mania in him,
- 15:25Speaker 4: you know. And I you know, I didn't even know
- 15:29Speaker 4: the term neurodivergent at the time, and I don't know
- 15:31Speaker 4: if I even love that term. But as someone who
- 15:35Speaker 4: really struggles with understanding certain emotional things sometimes or like,
- 15:41Speaker 4: I've really had to work on a lot of those
- 15:45Speaker 4: different things, and I'm so I can be very obsessive
- 15:49Speaker 4: about certain things and not let them go. I just
- 15:53Speaker 4: saw someone who was so you know, not kind of
- 15:57Speaker 4: loud and gregarious like I can be. But Barri's quiet
- 16:02Speaker 4: moments look so much like my quiet moments, and his
- 16:06Speaker 4: outbursts look so much like my outbursts, and his desire
- 16:11Speaker 4: for everyone to just see him as this person who
- 16:14Speaker 4: isn't just those outbursts because most of the time he
- 16:18Speaker 4: is just fine, was so palpable. I think what Adam
- 16:23Speaker 4: Sandler does on this role is just beautiful. I think
- 16:29Speaker 4: it's his best role by far. Like I think what
- 16:33Speaker 4: he does in Uncut Gems is slick and funny and
- 16:39Speaker 4: impressive and emotional. But what he does in Punched Drunk
- 16:44Speaker 4: Glove is he really makes all the wants and desires
- 16:50Speaker 4: and loves and resentments of this very quiet character so
- 16:56Speaker 4: apparent moment to moment to moment to moment. And he's
- 17:01Speaker 4: also very funny while he does it. I you know,
- 17:04Speaker 4: this is a funny film. Yeah, whenever somebody says, well,
- 17:08Speaker 4: Paul Thomas Anderson calls it his romantic comedy, but it's
- 17:11Speaker 4: not really funny and like, hey, what, like what do
- 17:15Speaker 4: you do you just like with somebody of shit on
- 17:18Speaker 4: the floor, Like right, I feel like it's.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Like they're What they're trying to say is like, it's
- 17:24Speaker 3: not funny in the way that an Adam Sandler comedy
- 17:27Speaker 3: is quote unquote is supposed to be funny. But like,
- 17:30Speaker 3: you can't watch the scene where he's ranting about putting
- 17:33Speaker 3: for thirty seconds and be like, I'm that's I feel
- 17:37Speaker 3: nothing like it's great.
- 17:39Speaker 4: It has one of I think the funniest lines in
- 17:41Speaker 4: all of cinema, which is after Barry smashes the deck window, hm,
- 17:48Speaker 4: it cuts to the closet that he's in calming down
- 17:51Speaker 4: and his sister's husband, his brother in law, comes in
- 17:56Speaker 4: and there he's like you're He goes, you're a doctor, right,
- 18:00Speaker 4: and he's like yeah, and he's like could you maybe
- 18:05Speaker 4: you know you have like someone like you help people
- 18:09Speaker 4: with problems, like emotional problems, and the brother in lago's
- 18:15Speaker 4: very I'm a dentist. Yeah. It's perfect, And this is
- 18:20Speaker 4: all in the This film does something that I think
- 18:25Speaker 4: Makelawfelis also does very well, which is I had all
- 18:33Speaker 4: one opera, you know, the whole thing start to finish
- 18:38Speaker 4: is such one big story, musical story quill you know.
- 18:44Speaker 4: But I see in Barry so much of myself and
- 18:49Speaker 4: I think the story is so beautiful because he finds
- 18:51Speaker 4: someone who understands him and views him, like really views
- 18:56Speaker 4: his humanity. And you see that holy, you see that
- 19:00Speaker 4: like in its entirety because when Lena is left at
- 19:06Speaker 4: the hospital, when he like ditches her and you get
- 19:10Speaker 4: you understand why he's doing it, but she meets him
- 19:14Speaker 4: with like this hurt me. It's not like she just
- 19:17Speaker 4: sees him and it's like, okay, so you can do
- 19:19Speaker 4: whatever because you got a weird brain, you know. She
- 19:22Speaker 4: like she really treats him as a person that she
- 19:25Speaker 4: also has expectations of and love for and understand me.
- 19:29Speaker 4: They all come together, you know. And I have found
- 19:32Speaker 4: in my life being the person that I am, it's
- 19:36Speaker 4: very hard to find someone that does all of that,
- 19:41Speaker 4: you know, and isn't like a switch, you know. I
- 19:44Speaker 4: feel like as a mentally ill person, I've been in
- 19:49Speaker 4: relationships where either they are totally supportive to a point
- 19:54Speaker 4: that's maybe not like healthy, you know, or they're done
- 19:58Speaker 4: with it, you know, and it's like a switch that
- 20:01Speaker 4: can go on and off and on and off, you know.
- 20:04Speaker 4: And I think it's really beautiful that she's able to
- 20:07Speaker 4: like she just she knows herself so well and what
- 20:10Speaker 4: she wants, and she's able to not change that based
- 20:14Speaker 4: on Barry. He just happens to be someone she does
- 20:18Speaker 4: love and want. I think this is the greatest love
- 20:21Speaker 4: story of all time, and it's a it's very taum.
- 20:24Speaker 4: It takes place in apartments, yeah, and in the San
- 20:27Speaker 4: Fernando Valley, you.
- 20:29Speaker 2: Know, like over the course of like four days. Maybe, Yeah,
- 20:34Speaker 2: it's pretty tight.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Yeah, it's more than four days because we don't quite
- 20:38Speaker 4: know how long they're in Hawaii.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Oh ray, I forgot Okay, so yeah, maybe maybe as
- 20:43Speaker 2: much as two weeks, but it's still pretty quick.
- 20:47Speaker 4: And this goes to my next contention, which is I'm
- 20:51Speaker 4: going to ask a question that I don't know why,
- 20:54Speaker 4: but you two never seem to get along to asking
- 20:57Speaker 4: on this podcast, which is does this film pass the
- 21:02Speaker 4: Bechdel Test? And my answer is yes, it does. And
- 21:08Speaker 4: the reason you're acting like we.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Were, like we started the show by saying it doesn't.
- 21:12Speaker 4: Okay, Well, this is first, this is my reasoning. Adam
- 21:18Speaker 4: Sandler's character, very Egot is a woman. Okay, expand on that,
- 21:27Speaker 4: Oh God, I should have thought more about it. I
- 21:35Speaker 4: don't think that there was any intention on on Paul
- 21:40Speaker 4: or Adam's parts to suggest that Barry is trans, nor
- 21:47Speaker 4: do I think you know, I'm I'm of the mindset,
- 21:50Speaker 4: generally speaking, that someone is trans if they say they're trans,
- 21:55Speaker 4: if not like the Kurt Cobain stuff, everyone says Kurt
- 21:59Speaker 4: Cobain is a transform And I think it's beautiful to
- 22:02Speaker 4: like see that Kirk Cobain had an understanding of his
- 22:06Speaker 4: gender that seemed expansive in some way. But I'm not
- 22:09Speaker 4: going to take away his right to have said who
- 22:13Speaker 4: he was or not while he was living, you know.
- 22:16Speaker 4: I but very to me is someone who is so
- 22:24Speaker 4: he's he has seven evil sisters and which feels.
- 22:30Speaker 3: So like fairy tale coded somehow, yes, is a.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Fairy tale and he's constantly mocked by them for being
- 22:41Speaker 4: gay and not a man.
- 22:42Speaker 1: You know.
- 22:43Speaker 4: He has this like man costume, you know, in the suit, the.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Blue suit, and he wears in every scene of the movie.
- 22:50Speaker 4: I think, this beautiful blue suit that's supposed to look cheap,
- 22:54Speaker 4: but I think looks beautiful.
- 22:55Speaker 3: I think it looks great well, and I loved how
- 22:58Speaker 3: subtly it's put in that like it's weird to people
- 23:01Speaker 3: that he's wearing it. Because like, this is the only
- 23:03Speaker 3: thing we know he's wearing, but every like more than
- 23:05Speaker 3: one of his sisters are like, what the fuck are
- 23:07Speaker 3: you wearing? And it's like he's trying something out.
- 23:11Speaker 2: His colleague comments on it too, Gusman, Yeah, who.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Is great in it too. Louis Guzman is so funny.
- 23:20Speaker 3: At its to your character actor.
- 23:22Speaker 4: He is the only character in the whole thing who's
- 23:25Speaker 4: he's he's in a fairytale. You know. Everyone else is
- 23:29Speaker 4: kind of going about their lives and Louis Guzman is like,
- 23:34Speaker 4: how many of her free stories are we going to
- 23:36Speaker 4: go to get?
- 23:38Speaker 3: He's great, He's my dad's favorite actor. Oh my Louis
- 23:43Speaker 3: Guzman head. I think mostly because of Boogie Knights, but
- 23:46Speaker 3: also Louise Guzman's in like hundreds of movies and yeah,
- 23:50Speaker 3: he's so great.
- 23:51Speaker 4: And you know, I think that, uh, he's so the
- 23:56Speaker 4: skin that he is, in the life that he has,
- 23:59Speaker 4: he seems to be looking for beauty and intimacy that
- 24:03Speaker 4: is outside of what is expected for him, which I
- 24:06Speaker 4: think is put on display most clearly in that initial
- 24:11Speaker 4: phone call with the phone sex hotline woman. And it's
- 24:16Speaker 4: not the first movie, obviously, wh or someone just wanted
- 24:19Speaker 4: to talk. But there's not any faint like an Annie
- 24:24Speaker 4: Hall or whatever. It's like, here's this creepy guy. You know,
- 24:27Speaker 4: Barry never comes off as some creepy guy, at least
- 24:29Speaker 4: to me. You know, he doesn't have an ulterior motive.
- 24:35Speaker 4: I'm not saying it would have been bad if he
- 24:37Speaker 4: wanted to just jack off. Maybe he does jack off.
- 24:39Speaker 4: There's nothing bad with that, but he likes, he craves
- 24:42Speaker 4: this intimacy and he craves the.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I think this movie would be interesting in conversation with
- 24:50Speaker 2: Friendship because I just saw Friendship and both movies are
- 24:54Speaker 2: about like male loneliness, and I kept kind of being
- 24:59Speaker 2: reminded a Tim Robinson character when I was watching Adam
- 25:03Speaker 2: Sandler in this movie.
- 25:06Speaker 3: Yeah, I see it.
- 25:06Speaker 4: I can see that.
- 25:07Speaker 2: I mean, they're definitely totally different, and one is way
- 25:12Speaker 2: more absurdist than the other, but yeah, I see it.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Though, I think that that makes sense, and there's like
- 25:19Speaker 3: there is this I like Barry. I mean, whatever, we
- 25:24Speaker 3: don't need to pit them against each other, but I like,
- 25:26Speaker 3: I think Barry's character has a lot more depth.
- 25:29Speaker 2: But like, yeah, I do.
- 25:30Speaker 3: I do kind of like how he's even at his
- 25:34Speaker 3: most vulnerable, unstable moment, whatever it is, you're totally regress.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Like he's he's very lovable, like we and it feels
- 25:44Speaker 3: like with with making like having that moment of intimacy
- 25:48Speaker 3: and just wanting to talk, it feels like he's trying
- 25:50Speaker 3: to have in a way that is like very human,
- 25:53Speaker 3: have a little bit of.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Control over a moment of intimacy that feels so like
- 25:59Speaker 5: all in every other area of his life. And it's
- 26:04Speaker 5: not for lack of effort on his part. It's like
- 26:07Speaker 5: these family dynamics are.
- 26:09Speaker 3: A fucking nightmare. Like yeah, you know, we could talk
- 26:13Speaker 3: about that in a bit too.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Yes, Friendship and pun Trunk Love have main characters that
- 26:21Speaker 4: are our lonely men. But Friendship seems to posit that
- 26:25Speaker 4: male loneliness has a unique aspect to it, or like
- 26:29Speaker 4: to focus to focus on those unique aspects. I'm not
- 26:32Speaker 4: saying that there aren't some unique things, you know, Like
- 26:37Speaker 4: their big tagline was like men shouldn't have friends, and
- 26:40Speaker 4: there's you know, like yadi aadiyada, right, And I'm like,
- 26:42Speaker 4: great movie, funny movie. Unstrunk Love is anything is about
- 26:48Speaker 4: the universality of loneliness, you know, And I'm not just
- 26:52Speaker 4: talking about Barry and Lena. I'm talking about Mary min
- 26:57Speaker 4: Rashka playing the main sister that you see is Lena's friend. Yeah,
- 27:02Speaker 4: her loneliness, her desire to have something to do in
- 27:06Speaker 4: her life, which happens to be harassing her brother. You know,
- 27:10Speaker 4: the loneliness of of Philip Seymour Hoffin's character Dean what's his.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Name, I kep Dean Furniture, Dean Mattress, Dean Trumbull, Dean Trumble,
- 27:23Speaker 3: Trumble Mattress in frind.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a lonely man.
- 27:27Speaker 1: You know.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Obviously he's just sparking orders. There's no he has no
- 27:30Speaker 4: peers because he's put himself on the top of his
- 27:33Speaker 4: trashy you know, the ladies behind it. Like everyone in
- 27:36Speaker 4: this movie is lonely, and it's that's this, it's this.
- 27:42Speaker 4: It's another similarity to Megalopolis in that like it's this
- 27:48Speaker 4: big thematic orchestral piece. But the thing about like everybody
- 27:54Speaker 4: in Punish Trunk Club is lonely. Everybody in Migalopolis is
- 27:58Speaker 4: upset about megalopolisliness.
- 28:02Speaker 3: But it's a universe, but the universality of the feeling. No, Yeah,
- 28:08Speaker 3: I do think that this is like a big story
- 28:11Speaker 3: about just capital l loneliness that anyone can sort of
- 28:15Speaker 3: tap into really quick. Kitlyn, what's your history.
- 28:19Speaker 4: With this movie?
- 28:20Speaker 2: I had seen this movie once before. I remember thinking
- 28:26Speaker 2: how different it was from every other Adam Sandler led
- 28:30Speaker 2: movie I had seen up until that point.
- 28:32Speaker 3: I feel like that was the headline at the time, too, right, Yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 2: And I was I think, like many people who saw
- 28:38Speaker 2: this movie, including Adam Sandler himself, I was shocked that
- 28:43Speaker 2: he had any capacity for versatility. But I was like, wow,
- 28:48Speaker 2: he actually like does a good job and he plays
- 28:51Speaker 2: a character that I don't hate. And to be fair,
- 28:55Speaker 2: you know, when I was young, I was watching Billy
- 28:57Speaker 2: Madison and living, laughing, loving it. But by the time
- 29:02Speaker 2: this movie came out, I was like pretty sick of
- 29:04Speaker 2: his little antics. But then I was like, wow, he's
- 29:09Speaker 2: he's good, and uh, that's pretty much it. Paul Thomas
- 29:16Speaker 2: Anderson is he can be hit or miss For me.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I like movies of his like Magnolia and Boogie Nights.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Phantom Thread, I didn't really like the first time I
- 29:25Speaker 2: watched it. I think I might need to go back
- 29:26Speaker 2: and rewatch it else. I hate liquorice pizza, and I
- 29:29Speaker 2: have to say that out loud.
- 29:30Speaker 3: I didn't like Phantom threadfoor I didn't. I didn't connect
- 29:33Speaker 3: with Phantom Thread the first time I saw it, and
- 29:35Speaker 3: then the second through three thousand times I saw it,
- 29:39Speaker 3: I was like, wait, so well, but I had that
- 29:42Speaker 3: experience a lot with his movie, specifically where it doesn't
- 29:44Speaker 3: always connect with me on the first watch. But I
- 29:47Speaker 3: also I haven't gone back to liquorice Pizza. I wasn't
- 29:49Speaker 3: a big fan of it.
- 29:50Speaker 2: I will always hate that movie no matter what.
- 29:52Speaker 4: I'm pretty sure Phantom Thread is another film that I
- 29:55Speaker 4: really connected with the protagonist. And because uh, I think
- 30:01Speaker 4: that Reynolds Woodcock and Barry Eating are two sides of
- 30:05Speaker 4: the same coin in some ways. But Barry is dealing
- 30:10Speaker 4: with his loneliness and fear by acting as if he
- 30:13Speaker 4: has no control and no agency in his life, and
- 30:17Speaker 4: Reynolds Woodcock is acting as if he has total control
- 30:20Speaker 4: and complete agency in his life. You know, they're both
- 30:24Speaker 4: obsessive too, but about one is about trying to.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Like trying to accumulate.
- 30:32Speaker 4: Of himself, you know, yeah, yes, yeah, but he's he's
- 30:37Speaker 4: like before he has a reason to use the airline miles,
- 30:42Speaker 4: he's accumulating them simply because it seems like a smart
- 30:46Speaker 4: thing for him to do, right that might make people
- 30:48Speaker 4: respect him or like be a good resource.
- 30:52Speaker 3: In the reveal that he has never, in fact been
- 30:54Speaker 3: on a plane before is like, so I just thought,
- 30:59Speaker 3: like the pacing of like how stuff is revealed in
- 31:02Speaker 3: this movie is so good because you just do assume
- 31:05Speaker 3: that someone accumulating airline miles has been on a plane.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I love it.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Yeah, no, but I totally see that connection of Yeah,
- 31:13Speaker 3: they're both obsessed with control, but one is obsessed with
- 31:16Speaker 3: the lack of it he has, and the other is
- 31:18Speaker 3: trying to maintain the control he imposes, and.
- 31:21Speaker 4: He's creating this like fake identity. Yeah, like he doesn't
- 31:25Speaker 4: care about his warehouse or like you know, like he's
- 31:29Speaker 4: he's a man with no passion until he finds it.
- 31:33Speaker 4: And Reynolds is a person that has all the passion
- 31:36Speaker 4: in the world and no capacity to take a moment
- 31:41Speaker 4: of like seed any of that passion.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:44Speaker 4: For the reality of a relationship, the reality of a family,
- 31:48Speaker 4: Yadi Yadi Audiata, Paul Thomas Anderson, I love you all
- 31:54Speaker 4: the baby, I.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Need to rewatch throw it again. Jamie, what is your
- 32:01Speaker 2: history with Punch Drunk Glove.
- 32:03Speaker 3: I really like this movie. I saw it for the
- 32:05Speaker 3: first time in college and I've revisited it from time
- 32:09Speaker 3: to time. It's not my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson. I'm
- 32:15Speaker 3: I think I'm ultimately there will be Blood, Girly. My
- 32:18Speaker 3: brother and I used to do a really powerful double
- 32:21Speaker 3: feature of There Will Be Blood and Doubt, and that
- 32:25Speaker 3: was our late two thousands double feature that we would do.
- 32:29Speaker 3: Really wanted to think some big thoughts. So I am
- 32:33Speaker 3: ultimately there will be Blood girl. But I also love
- 32:36Speaker 3: that this movie is sandwich between Magnolia and There Will
- 32:40Speaker 3: Be Blood. There's just the guys. Got range Io had
- 32:45Speaker 3: a funny letterbox review of this movie where it was
- 32:50Speaker 3: like something akin to like, oh yeah, like Paul Thomas
- 32:53Speaker 3: Anderson made Magnolia and then was like, oh wait, I
- 32:56Speaker 3: should make a movie that's short, and that is how
- 33:00Speaker 3: we came to get Punch Drunk Love.
- 33:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:03Speaker 3: I really like this movie. I've never really watched it
- 33:07Speaker 3: with a critical lens at all. I just this is
- 33:12Speaker 3: very much a movie I've just let wash over me
- 33:14Speaker 3: in the in the many times I've seen it, so
- 33:16Speaker 3: I'm excited to talk about it.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Let's take a quick break, and then we'll come back
- 33:20Speaker 2: for the recap.
- 33:32Speaker 3: And we're back.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Here's the recap of Punch Drunk Love. We meet Barry
- 33:38Speaker 2: Egan played by Adam Sandler in his office, which we
- 33:43Speaker 2: will eventually learn is inside a warehouse slash business that
- 33:50Speaker 2: wholesale sells toilet plungers.
- 33:54Speaker 4: Awesome, not just toilet plungers, novelty toilet plungers.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Yeah, that seemed to have water in the hand. Question
- 34:00Speaker 2: markers funger.
- 34:03Speaker 4: I don't know what that is, but they're fun.
- 34:05Speaker 3: They're fun, he says.
- 34:07Speaker 4: Keep them at eye level so that the kids can
- 34:09Speaker 4: see him.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Ye, yes, yes, yes. So he's on the phone asking
- 34:14Speaker 2: about some like airline miles promotion that's going to come back,
- 34:19Speaker 2: of course. Then he steps outside and sees a bizarre
- 34:23Speaker 2: sequence of events. First, a horrific car crash that never
- 34:27Speaker 2: comes back in any way or I don't. I'm like,
- 34:29Speaker 2: is this a metaphor? I don't understand what this was?
- 34:32Speaker 2: And then another vehicle pulls up right in front of him,
- 34:35Speaker 2: drops off a little miniature piano, and speeds off a harmonium.
- 34:41Speaker 2: Shortly after that, a woman played by Emily Watson pulls up.
- 34:47Speaker 2: She's there to leave her car at the auto mechanic
- 34:50Speaker 2: next door, but they're not open yet, so she leaves
- 34:52Speaker 2: her car keys with Barry to pass them on to
- 34:55Speaker 2: the mechanic and he's like, oh, okay, beca because.
- 35:00Speaker 4: He says no at first, he says.
- 35:03Speaker 2: He's reluctant because the thing with him is we've alluded
- 35:07Speaker 2: to is that he has a significant amount of social anxiety.
- 35:12Speaker 2: He is awkward in social situations, he's quite jumpy, has
- 35:16Speaker 2: like a nervous energy in general. Then Barry brings what's
- 35:21Speaker 2: it called a harmonium.
- 35:23Speaker 4: A harmonium, yes, which is like a piano accordion, but
- 35:28Speaker 4: like an accordion like has the piano, but it's like
- 35:31Speaker 4: it's like upright and it's broken.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Oh, and that's why he puts the tape on.
- 35:35Speaker 4: You has to fix it.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like Barry himself.
- 35:40Speaker 4: And he just puts it on top of his desk.
- 35:42Speaker 4: It covers like this whole desk for the rest of
- 35:45Speaker 4: the movie. It's just yeah, I do love that.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Yeah, And it's it's just like a yet another thing
- 35:51Speaker 3: that anyone he encounters is like what is that? What
- 35:53Speaker 3: the fuck is that? And he's like, oh, it's just
- 35:56Speaker 3: this thing.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, so that when he starts a busy day
- 36:01Speaker 2: of work where he and his colleague Lands played by
- 36:05Speaker 2: Luis Gusmann, are selling the fungers, but Barry keeps getting
- 36:09Speaker 2: interrupted when his many sisters call him asking if he's
- 36:13Speaker 2: going to a party tonight. One of his sisters even
- 36:17Speaker 2: shows up. This is Elizabeth played by Marilynn Rashcub, who
- 36:21Speaker 2: says that she wants to bring a friend of hers
- 36:24Speaker 2: to the party who she wants Barry to meet, but
- 36:27Speaker 2: he is not into this idea, though he does seem
- 36:31Speaker 2: to be thinking about the woman who dropped off her car.
- 36:34Speaker 4: Mm hmm, I guess what bitches, Wait, we don't know that.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Well, yeah, we don't know yet, but it is the
- 36:40Speaker 2: same woman. Anyway. We cut to Barry showing up at
- 36:44Speaker 2: the party. It's his seven sisters and their husbands, and
- 36:48Speaker 2: they're all very antagonistic toward him. They're reminiscing about how
- 36:52Speaker 2: they bullied him, how when they were kids he threw
- 36:57Speaker 2: a hammer through a glass door, and.
- 37:00Speaker 4: They importantly ask, hmm, how do you get the hammer?
- 37:03Speaker 4: And nobody has an answer.
- 37:05Speaker 3: I like this, I mean we can talk about because
- 37:08Speaker 3: the sisters feel very fairy tale coded to me. You know,
- 37:13Speaker 3: they are outside of Elizabeth, very indistinguishable from one another.
- 37:18Speaker 3: They are all sort of this like, you know, and
- 37:21Speaker 3: they're you know. We could talk about how the antagonists
- 37:24Speaker 3: in this story are generally women at some point, but
- 37:28Speaker 3: but I did, like, I thought the casting on the
- 37:31Speaker 3: sisters was so good, like that sequence. It just this
- 37:35Speaker 3: is a movie where this isn't even true of all
- 37:38Speaker 3: Paul Thomas Anderson movies, where everyone looks basically normal, like
- 37:44Speaker 3: everyone looks like you could meet them, and I just like, it's,
- 37:48Speaker 3: you know, it's a very white movie, like I'm not
- 37:50Speaker 3: you know, but this is like Adam Sandlor and Emily
- 37:53Speaker 3: Watson look like people you could meet in the world
- 37:55Speaker 3: as a couple, and as someone who saw Materialists last night,
- 38:00Speaker 3: I value that. I value people that look like they
- 38:04Speaker 3: exist in the world. I mean, and his whole family too.
- 38:07Speaker 4: Emily Watson is a very beautiful woman but is never
- 38:12Speaker 4: presented by the film is like houci Mama, what's going on?
- 38:17Speaker 1: You know?
- 38:17Speaker 4: Okay, which a lot of even like Fancy Dancy remained
- 38:21Speaker 4: a comedies that are not like horny like in the
- 38:24Speaker 4: Nana's Only Round common like classical way are like Oh,
- 38:28Speaker 4: look at this woman. You want to fuck so bad,
- 38:31Speaker 4: you know, right, Like it's like that is kind of
- 38:34Speaker 4: how she's presented in some way, you know, but that's
- 38:37Speaker 4: not in this movie. She's just a lady. Yeah, a
- 38:39Speaker 4: beautiful lady about a lady exactly. Yeah.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Like the way she's framed in the way that she,
- 38:45Speaker 3: I don't know, acts like you could tell they're interested
- 38:47Speaker 3: in each other. You can tell they're falling in love.
- 38:49Speaker 3: But it's not like super didactic in the way it's shown.
- 38:52Speaker 3: I just I love when people are in movies and
- 38:55Speaker 3: they have regular teeth.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Yes, okay, so they're talking about this thing. They do
- 39:01Speaker 2: say where he got the hammer? He was building a doghouse.
- 39:04Speaker 2: His one sister comes out from the bathroom and she's like,
- 39:07Speaker 2: he was building a doghouse. But anyway, this, you know,
- 39:11Speaker 2: triggers some bad emotions in him, and he kind of
- 39:14Speaker 2: snaps and he kicks a bunch of windows or sliding
- 39:18Speaker 2: glass doors and they shatter and everyone's like, what the
- 39:21Speaker 2: fuck man? And then he confides in his brother in
- 39:25Speaker 2: law in a scene that we briefly mentioned, but he
- 39:28Speaker 2: says he doesn't like himself. He might want psychiatric help.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Sometimes he cries for no reason, and then he bursts
- 39:35Speaker 2: into tears. We cut to Burry at the grocery store
- 39:40Speaker 2: shopping for healthy choice products that have this promotion where
- 39:45Speaker 2: you get a bunch of frequent Flyer miles if you
- 39:47Speaker 2: buy you know, ten frozen meals or ten puddings, and
- 39:52Speaker 2: you'll get even more miles if you have this certain coupon.
- 39:55Speaker 2: And we see him clipping this coupon, and as he's
- 39:59Speaker 2: doing that, he notices an ad for a phone sex hotline,
- 40:04Speaker 2: so he calls the number. He gives his credit card information,
- 40:08Speaker 2: his address, his social security number, and he starts talking
- 40:13Speaker 2: to a woman named Georgia who is trying to do
- 40:18Speaker 2: her job. She's trying to do phone sex, and it's
- 40:22Speaker 2: clear that again he just wanted someone to talk to,
- 40:25Speaker 2: so he's not really doing phone sex. Back he eventually
- 40:29Speaker 2: goes to bed side. Note he has one of those
- 40:31Speaker 2: clap on clap off lights.
- 40:32Speaker 3: Such a good detail. Oh I love it.
- 40:36Speaker 2: All my nipples are going to the clap off light.
- 40:39Speaker 3: I will say that the thing that I found myself
- 40:42Speaker 3: connecting with Barry the hardest on is like that sequence
- 40:46Speaker 3: that happens right before where he's asking his brother in
- 40:49Speaker 3: law like can you get me help? You know, and
- 40:53Speaker 3: his brother in law, I think, like many of the
- 40:55Speaker 3: men specifically in this movie, does want to help him
- 40:59Speaker 3: but doesn't really know how and sort of just doesn't
- 41:02Speaker 3: really do anything. And then Barry like channels his energy
- 41:06Speaker 3: instead into this like hyper specific task. So he's like, Okay,
- 41:10Speaker 3: I tried to get help, I wasn't able to get help.
- 41:14Speaker 3: We're going back to the pudding thing.
- 41:15Speaker 5: And I.
- 41:17Speaker 3: Have experienced that spiral a number of times over the
- 41:21Speaker 3: years of like, well I did my best, and now
- 41:24Speaker 3: back to my hyper specific task.
- 41:26Speaker 4: If you name a few, I can't think of any
- 41:29Speaker 4: that I've seen you do.
- 41:30Speaker 3: Oh, I mean it's I was like, wait, really yeah,
- 41:41Speaker 3: But it's like I don't know. It's fun to see
- 41:44Speaker 3: stuff like that too, because it's also like he's doing
- 41:47Speaker 3: the kind of things that I also do, but that
- 41:49Speaker 3: like you don't tell people you're doing the pudding thing, right,
- 41:52Speaker 3: Like it's I love that he's doing the pudding thing
- 41:54Speaker 3: and he's thinking about it and like, well, I don't
- 41:57Speaker 3: want to spend two dollars in the karaoke I can.
- 41:59Speaker 3: I can, Like there's a whole like matrix of information.
- 42:02Speaker 4: I was like ah. He also makes sure the pudding
- 42:05Speaker 4: thing is ethical. For the record, she's off the phone
- 42:08Speaker 4: with the health Insuran we thought the GETTI and he's
- 42:12Speaker 4: asking them, are you aware that this could you know? Result?
- 42:16Speaker 2: Yeah, the monetary value of the price is way more
- 42:21Speaker 2: and they're just like, I don't know. And he's like.
- 42:24Speaker 4: Okay, And that's how we're introduced to him. Yeah, this
- 42:27Speaker 4: is like being bad kind of too, Like this is
- 42:31Speaker 4: like his fine. I think he feels like he's getting
- 42:33Speaker 4: one over on support.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I like how Yeah, And everyone who talks him
- 42:38Speaker 3: they're like, yeah, you could buy three thousand dollars worth
- 42:42Speaker 3: of pudding. We can't stop you.
- 42:45Speaker 2: This is also based on a story a guy named
- 42:49Speaker 2: David Phillips. He successfully accumulated over a million frequent flyer
- 42:55Speaker 2: miles after buying three thousand dollars worth of Healthy Choice,
- 43:01Speaker 2: and Paul Thomas Anderson went to David Phillips. He went
- 43:05Speaker 2: to Healthy Choice. He's like, can I use your story
- 43:10Speaker 2: slash your product in my movie? And they're like sure.
- 43:14Speaker 3: I love that. I do appreciate because like most people
- 43:18Speaker 3: wouldn't go to the guy who bought three thousand dollars
- 43:22Speaker 3: worth of putting to be like just checking in, Like
- 43:24Speaker 3: imagine if Law and Order did that, which they never do,
- 43:28Speaker 3: Like I appreciate that thoroughness from Paul Thomas Anderson.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Yeah. Anyway, so he's had this phone conversation with Georgia.
- 43:37Speaker 2: It ends off screen, and then the next morning, Georgia
- 43:41Speaker 2: calls him again asking if Barry can help out with rent.
- 43:46Speaker 2: She needs seven hundred and fifty dollars and he says, no,
- 43:49Speaker 2: I'm sorry, I can't afford that, and then she kind
- 43:52Speaker 2: of starts threatening.
- 43:53Speaker 4: Him, explicitly threatened him. Yeah, she goes in it pretty
- 43:58Speaker 4: quick for' actually for may that is.
- 44:01Speaker 2: True barry hangs. Up he goes to work reveal that
- 44:07Speaker 2: he has bought hundreds of. Puddings he's now kind of
- 44:11Speaker 2: panicking after this phone, call and so he cancels his credit.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Card then his Sister elizabeth shows up again with the
- 44:21Speaker 2: woman who had dropped off her car yesterday because she's
- 44:24Speaker 2: the woman Who elizabeth wanted to introduce wow To, barry
- 44:28Speaker 2: and her name Is. Lena and then as this scene goes,
- 44:32Speaker 2: on things get more and more. Chaotic but basically they
- 44:36Speaker 2: Invite barry to get breakfast with. Them they're interrupted When
- 44:40Speaker 2: georgia keeps calling and continues to be very aggressive and.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Threatening he keeps hanging up on. Her Then elizabeth is interrogating.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Him Then lena starts chatting with him and trying to like.
- 44:52Speaker 2: FLIRT a forklift, Crashes everyone's, like what's this? Pudding what's this?
- 44:58Speaker 2: Piano why are you wearing this blue? Suit? Again and
- 45:02Speaker 2: then Eventually lena And elizabeth go to, leave But lena
- 45:06Speaker 2: comes back and Asks barry out on a date the following,
- 45:09Speaker 2: night and he. Agrees we cut to. Provo, utah we
- 45:15Speaker 2: Meet georgia or the person who's like pretending to be
- 45:19Speaker 2: This georgia.
- 45:20Speaker 3: Person my head canon For georgia is that she is
- 45:24Speaker 3: a Like mormon dropout who's trying to get.
- 45:27Speaker 2: By, yeah she is collaborating with a guy Named, dean
- 45:32Speaker 2: That's Philip Seymour hoffman to go After.
- 45:36Speaker 4: BARRY i mean she's working with for. Him, yeah explicitly
- 45:40Speaker 4: she's working for.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Him, yeah Because dean owns a mattress, store.
- 45:46Speaker 4: Which is a front for his, gang basically his criminal.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Activities he's got his you, know he's got his hands
- 45:54Speaker 3: and a lot of. Businesses he's got a lot of
- 45:56Speaker 3: things going on out of.
- 45:57Speaker 4: This.
- 45:57Speaker 3: Yeah but, yeah she definitely works for him and seems
- 46:01Speaker 3: a little scared of, him because later, on when When
- 46:06Speaker 3: barry demands to speak to the manager of the phone sex,
- 46:09Speaker 3: hotline she does refer to Phil Seymour.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Hoffmann, Right but for, now they're sending a bunch of
- 46:17Speaker 2: minions To barry's house In la to intimidate. Him so
- 46:23Speaker 2: back In, La barry And lena go out to. Dinner
- 46:27Speaker 2: she reveals that she saw a picture of him with
- 46:29Speaker 2: his sisters and she wanted to meet, him and she
- 46:32Speaker 2: dropped her car off at that mechanic to try to meet.
- 46:36Speaker 3: HIM i think it's, see it's maybe a little stocker, vibes.
- 46:41Speaker 2: But it's it's a little, stockery but it's, not she
- 46:45Speaker 2: admits the worst type of. STOKING i don't think it's.
- 46:49Speaker 4: STOCKERY i think everybody gets one, play you, know like
- 46:54Speaker 4: to meet someone they want to, meet or like a romance.
- 46:57Speaker 4: Someone you get one play and if it doesn't, work you,
- 46:59Speaker 4: pack you're bagging you go.
- 47:00Speaker 3: HOME i think that's.
- 47:01Speaker 4: Fair but everybody gets one. Play obviously the play is
- 47:05Speaker 4: and showing up at someone's house that you don't, know
- 47:07Speaker 4: but like.
- 47:09Speaker 2: Context is very.
- 47:10Speaker 4: Important, yeah you, see, like, hey that cute person you know,
- 47:13Speaker 4: them and then like you're, like, HEY i got your,
- 47:16Speaker 4: number or like that's one. Thing you get one shot
- 47:19Speaker 4: and then the SHOT's. Done that's. It but you'll get one.
- 47:22Speaker 4: Shot and she took her shot.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Because it's Like i've done stuff like, that And i've
- 47:27Speaker 2: gone to comedy shows of Comedians i've had crushes, on
- 47:30Speaker 2: hoping to like talk to.
- 47:32Speaker 3: Them and ALSO i think the critical thing here Because
- 47:35Speaker 3: i've seen this criticizes stock you, behavior but like it
- 47:37Speaker 3: is like it Passes Grace freud's one shot, rule and
- 47:43Speaker 3: it's like it's not what she does is not like
- 47:46Speaker 3: leering or menacing or creepy at. All she just wants
- 47:49Speaker 3: to meet him and LIKE i don't.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Know their conversation is very. Brief, yeah she doesn't like
- 47:55Speaker 2: linger and be.
- 47:57Speaker 4: Weird and, importantly she isn't, like, HEY i saw you
- 48:02Speaker 4: in a. PICTURE i just had to meet. You i'm
- 48:04Speaker 4: like so into. You she once she senses that there
- 48:07Speaker 4: is some sort of mutual, attraction just like by the,
- 48:11Speaker 4: WAY i just want you to KNOW i orchestrated this
- 48:15Speaker 4: and she says it so she says THAT i think
- 48:17Speaker 4: at the perfect time to say, it, ye not when
- 48:20Speaker 4: it feels like pressure almost to then follow through the
- 48:24Speaker 4: day and not Like Almond vane or, whatever you, know.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Which she also addresses during that first. Date she's, LIKE
- 48:32Speaker 2: i want to like get this off my chest BECAUSE
- 48:35Speaker 2: i don't want to have any weird like me withholding
- 48:38Speaker 2: information from you for too. Long here it IS i
- 48:42Speaker 2: like her so, much and he is fine with. It
- 48:45Speaker 2: he doesn't give a single. Shit he's, like he's actually,
- 48:47Speaker 2: flattered it seems. Yeah and then he opens up and
- 48:52Speaker 2: tells her about something that he seems to be humiliated,
- 48:56Speaker 2: by but this whole pudding. Thing but Then lena brings
- 49:00Speaker 2: up the hammer story from his, childhood which prompts him
- 49:04Speaker 2: to go into the bathroom and completely trash, it and
- 49:08Speaker 2: he's kicked out of the. Restaurant but he And lena
- 49:11Speaker 2: leave together and they drive. Around they end up at her.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Place but then when he, leaves he's very awkward and
- 49:18Speaker 2: there's not a real kiss or anything like, that and
- 49:20Speaker 2: he says and bye.
- 49:21Speaker 4: Bye oh my, god this is bye bye bye bye and.
- 49:26Speaker 4: Bye but then he goes. Back he, like and this
- 49:31Speaker 4: is one of the most beautiful scenes on. Film he
- 49:34Speaker 4: leaves the building and as he's, leaving the front desk is,
- 49:38Speaker 4: like are you? Buried and this is like it's kind of,
- 49:41Speaker 4: scary right because.
- 49:42Speaker 3: Because he's afraid someone's hunting.
- 49:44Speaker 4: Him, yeah, yeah and he's like yeah and, Gradsend she's,
- 49:47Speaker 4: LIKE i wish that you'd kissed. Me and then he
- 49:53Speaker 4: like starts like rotting back to her. Apartment it seems
- 49:57Speaker 4: like he gets a lot to get. There, yes he
- 49:59Speaker 4: gets a. Lot he was going down this fall down
- 50:02Speaker 4: that all and bad and badit bam and the score
- 50:05Speaker 4: is getting bigger and bigger and. Bigger and then he
- 50:08Speaker 4: finally finds her in. Bam they kid said it's so.
- 50:11Speaker 4: Beautiful mm, hmmm mm.
- 50:13Speaker 2: Hmmm and then they agreed to see each other when
- 50:17Speaker 2: she gets back from a trip To hawaii that she had,
- 50:20Speaker 2: mentioned and he, said oh, maybe Y'all i'm going To hawaii,
- 50:23Speaker 2: too which is a.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Lie but that's also WHAT i really appreciated about their
- 50:29Speaker 3: date in a way that like clearly sets up this
- 50:32Speaker 3: is What barry needs to like overcome to be able
- 50:35Speaker 3: to have a relationship with, her is? RIGHT i think
- 50:38Speaker 3: it's right Before lena is, like, OKAY i have to come,
- 50:41Speaker 3: clean LIKE i had a crush on, you and that's
- 50:43Speaker 3: WHY i brought out my car off blah blah, blah
- 50:45Speaker 3: because she's very honest AND i think, grace like you
- 50:47Speaker 3: were saying, earlier like she knows. Herself and what precedes
- 50:51Speaker 3: that is very like telling this the series of white,
- 50:56Speaker 3: lies so That lena doesn't quote unquote think he's weird
- 51:00Speaker 3: where you, know and and then she's very, honest and
- 51:04Speaker 3: then and then he's able to like slowly start to open.
- 51:07Speaker 3: Up BUT i also could sort of connect to like
- 51:10Speaker 3: he tells weird lies sometimes, nervously which is especially WHEN
- 51:16Speaker 3: i was like younger.
- 51:17Speaker 2: And super super.
- 51:18Speaker 3: INSECURE i do that all the time just to feel
- 51:20Speaker 3: like you could engage with other people to just seem
- 51:23Speaker 3: like you get it or whatever as a defense. Mechanism
- 51:27Speaker 3: AND i don't, know there's there's some barrier in all of.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Us AND i love. That like when he it's just
- 51:32Speaker 3: like because he doesn't really feel safe to fully be
- 51:36Speaker 3: himself with. Anybody and also it's, like especially for someone
- 51:40Speaker 3: who doesn't feel safe being themselves with a lot of,
- 51:43Speaker 3: people what happens With georgia is his worst, nightmare where
- 51:47Speaker 3: it's like he's not even fully telling her the, truth
- 51:50Speaker 3: but he's trying to have an authentic conversation and then
- 51:53Speaker 3: it feels like he's punished.
- 51:54Speaker 2: For, it, which, yeah for, sure.
- 51:57Speaker 4: He does lie to. Her he, does, yeah having a, girlfriend,
- 52:01Speaker 4: yeah which IS i don't think wrong, necessarily you.
- 52:04Speaker 3: Know he's just, like there's like a mutual agreement of.
- 52:07Speaker 3: Fantasy it's a.
- 52:09Speaker 4: Fantasy it's a mutual. Fantasy, yeah but she tries to
- 52:12Speaker 4: use it Against he's, Like i'm gonna call your, girlfriend you, know,
- 52:15Speaker 4: yeah she'll pick up and he's, LIKE i had a
- 52:19Speaker 4: girlfriend a, wife and he's, LIKE i, don't, YEAH i, KNOW.
- 52:24Speaker 2: I have no love in.
- 52:25Speaker 3: Mind this is this is getting forward a little. Bit
- 52:27Speaker 3: but later when he's on the payphone and he's, like,
- 52:30Speaker 3: wait do you have a? Boyfriend have you been? Married
- 52:32Speaker 3: she's like, no when was the last time you had a?
- 52:34Speaker 3: Girlfriend he's, like so have you been?
- 52:35Speaker 2: Married like he just question and then she's like we
- 52:39Speaker 2: should meet up and talk about, this and he's, like
- 52:41Speaker 2: so where are you. From i'm still on the. Phone
- 52:44Speaker 2: he's just.
- 52:44Speaker 4: Excited like that's HOW i feel about stuff, too when
- 52:49Speaker 4: like WHEN i get open with somethe OR I i
- 52:53Speaker 4: feel like it's it's Very i'm not into it Or
- 52:57Speaker 4: i'm so into, it AND i want to know that
- 52:59Speaker 4: it'll be forever and, okay which is not, healthy but
- 53:04Speaker 4: is THAT i really.
- 53:05Speaker 3: It's human in this movie.
- 53:09Speaker 2: Anyway so they have this nice date and they finally
- 53:11Speaker 2: kiss and they part, ways and as he's returning, home
- 53:16Speaker 2: he is abducted by the guys Who georgia And dean
- 53:20Speaker 2: sent and they make him take five hundred dollars out
- 53:24Speaker 2: of AN. Atm one guy punches. Him he starts saying
- 53:28Speaker 2: ow aw aw before he's even. PUNCHED i love. That
- 53:32Speaker 2: great details that happened to my brother. Once, oh and
- 53:36Speaker 2: then he like sprints away and he's like running around
- 53:39Speaker 2: the neighborhood and perhaps to. Flee he decides to go To,
- 53:45Speaker 2: hawaii but he needs More Frequent flyer miles, first so
- 53:50Speaker 2: he And lance go to the grocery store and buy
- 53:52Speaker 2: a bunch more.
- 53:53Speaker 4: PUDDING i would like to say one thing really, quickly
- 53:55Speaker 4: would in that like a series of shots of him
- 53:59Speaker 4: running around The San Fernando valley after the. Abduction. Yeah
- 54:04Speaker 4: people ask me WHY i Love Los, angeles AND i,
- 54:07Speaker 4: say Because Los angeles is unique in any other big
- 54:11Speaker 4: City i've lived, in which is that it has a
- 54:14Speaker 4: real sense of. MYSTERY i don't feel Like New york has.
- 54:17Speaker 4: THAT i don't feel Like chicago has. It Los angeles
- 54:20Speaker 4: really feels like it's constantly changing and there's always places
- 54:25Speaker 4: That i've not uncovered and h and that aura of
- 54:28Speaker 4: MYSTERY i think is so on display on film in
- 54:32Speaker 4: this in this, movie both in the scene when the
- 54:34Speaker 4: harmonium is dropped off and making those warehouse districts look,
- 54:38Speaker 4: beautiful and then When barry's just driving around and running,
- 54:41Speaker 4: around it just is like Any it's SO i don't,
- 54:45Speaker 4: KNOW i THINK i think this this movie really shows
- 54:47Speaker 4: WHY i love la you, know because it captures that
- 54:51Speaker 4: vibe AND i.
- 54:52Speaker 3: Mean, like, yeah he's uniquely good at The king of
- 54:55Speaker 3: The valley. HIMSELF i really liked HOW i think we
- 54:59Speaker 3: talked about it early in the, episode but like how
- 55:02Speaker 3: carefully the like dreamlike quality of this movie because basically
- 55:05Speaker 3: everything that we're shown does, Happen but there are several
- 55:09Speaker 3: points in the movie where you're like that can't have,
- 55:11Speaker 3: happened but it always, oh it's, LIKE i, mean we'll
- 55:15Speaker 3: get there in a, second but at the moment with
- 55:17Speaker 3: the like the guy in the back of the car and,
- 55:19Speaker 3: all and you're, like that can't be. True and then
- 55:21Speaker 3: we cut to the hospital and you're, like, oh, no
- 55:24Speaker 3: that was.
- 55:24Speaker 4: True but and then something we haven't hit, on which
- 55:27Speaker 4: is present throughout this, film or the animated interstitials THAT
- 55:32Speaker 4: i think we're actually done at Cal, arts and these
- 55:35Speaker 4: animated interstitials that are you, know some could call them.
- 55:40Speaker 4: Simplistic it's like colors and lines and stuff that doesn't,
- 55:44Speaker 4: happen but it does in the same. Way it's, like
- 55:47Speaker 4: here's Something i'm seeing on, film what does that mean is?
- 55:50Speaker 4: Happening it is the same like it's like the bah da.
- 55:54Speaker 4: Da so it's LIKE i think those you, know stitials
- 56:01Speaker 4: help the dreamlike quality of all of. It, sure because it's,
- 56:05Speaker 4: like how can a color? Happen is a Color i'm
- 56:09Speaker 4: just seen on screen? Reel is this an? Event it's
- 56:13Speaker 4: being presented to me as this in the same way
- 56:16Speaker 4: as all this other. Stuff, yeah you, know like it's
- 56:19Speaker 4: a part of the same. Thread so, yeah a phantom.
- 56:23Speaker 4: Thread the phantom. Thread.
- 56:25Speaker 2: Wow, again the truck that just like tumbles down the
- 56:29Speaker 2: street toward the beginning of the, movie And i'm, like
- 56:31Speaker 2: that's gonna pay off in some way or we're gonna
- 56:34Speaker 2: learn something about.
- 56:35Speaker 3: It it's such a good tone setter, though just like
- 56:38Speaker 3: things are just gonna.
- 56:39Speaker 2: Happen yeah for. Sure.
- 56:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:42Speaker 2: Okay so he And lance have gone to the grocery
- 56:45Speaker 2: store to buy more, pudding But barry learns that the
- 56:48Speaker 2: miles he's accumulated can't be redeemed for six to eight,
- 56:53Speaker 2: weeks so he freaks out a little.
- 56:55Speaker 4: Bit he fully freaks, out this is this is his
- 56:59Speaker 4: fucking his, loss fucking, dombas fuck bullshit, screenwriting nothing. Matters
- 57:08Speaker 4: and again it's.
- 57:09Speaker 3: A great, like uh fuck you to how those moments
- 57:12Speaker 3: usually happen where it's it's, LIKE i feel like it
- 57:14Speaker 3: often is something really small that feels. Gigantic and then
- 57:19Speaker 3: he remembers he could just buy a you can just,
- 57:22Speaker 3: GOD i love.
- 57:24Speaker 2: Him, yeah so he decides to go a NOTE i
- 57:27Speaker 2: MADE i was, like he doesn't know which Island lena is,
- 57:30Speaker 2: on but he seems to pick the right island because
- 57:33Speaker 2: they meet up pretty. Easily but, anyway is that did
- 57:37Speaker 2: you think about? THAT i did think about. That, yeah
- 57:41Speaker 2: maybe that's just The bechdel cast lens or. Something but,
- 57:46Speaker 2: anyway so he. Go he arrives In, hawaii and he
- 57:49Speaker 2: gets the name Of lena's hotel from his Sister, elizabeth
- 57:54Speaker 2: in a phone call where he's having another, outburst but
- 57:58Speaker 2: he meets up With. Lena they have a romantic night
- 58:01Speaker 2: together and it seems like they really really like each.
- 58:04Speaker 2: Other Then barry calls the phone sex hotline and leaves
- 58:09Speaker 2: a message telling them that he expects them to return his.
- 58:13Speaker 3: Money, yes the confidence given By New love And fucking.
- 58:17Speaker 4: Has, Yeah New love And Fucking baby it has.
- 58:21Speaker 3: Cust him to possibly self sabotage yet.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Again but now he's advocating for. Himself yes he, is
- 58:27Speaker 2: he is in a way that he couldn't. Before but
- 58:29Speaker 2: it's hard not to be scared for him in that.
- 58:31Speaker 3: Moment you're like.
- 58:32Speaker 4: True and when they're, fucking when they're in the, hotel
- 58:37Speaker 4: he has this like quote THAT i want to say
- 58:41Speaker 4: perfectly Because i'm not the kind of person that can
- 58:43Speaker 4: remember this whole thing all at. Once but it's, like,
- 58:48Speaker 4: uh like they've just fucked and, stuff and he's, like
- 58:54Speaker 4: HiT's i can't say?
- 58:55Speaker 5: It is?
- 58:55Speaker 2: It when she says LIKE i want to chew on your,
- 58:57Speaker 2: CHEEK i want.
- 58:58Speaker 4: To eat him up with The he's, LIKE i want
- 59:00Speaker 4: to punch you on the ball your fucking eyes. OUT
- 59:02Speaker 4: i don't want to eat you fucking. UP i want to,
- 59:04Speaker 4: like it's just like fucking.
- 59:05Speaker 3: And they're like escalating. It, yeah they're.
- 59:07Speaker 4: Escalating and It's AND i actually have unexclusive for The Vechdel,
- 59:12Speaker 4: cast which is that my Friend Alex blum is doing
- 59:17Speaker 4: this thing Called hotlines where she writes quotes from movies
- 59:22Speaker 4: on hot. Dogs and she asked me for my favorit
- 59:24Speaker 4: quote from a, movie AND i gave her this long
- 59:26Speaker 4: one BECAUSE i thought it would be, funny and and
- 59:29Speaker 4: so she POSTED i take a screenshot of. IT i
- 59:31Speaker 4: posted on my. STORY i take. HER i was demonetized
- 59:35Speaker 4: From instagram for two weeks because they said that that
- 59:38Speaker 4: quote on a hot dog and mustard was inciting. Violence
- 59:42Speaker 4: oh my. God AND i know no one like reported.
- 59:45Speaker 4: It it was not something like idiot trying to troll,
- 59:47Speaker 4: me because it was weeks later like they're like net
- 59:51Speaker 4: or whatever just like picked it.
- 59:53Speaker 3: Up, wow that could have really hurt. Someone that they
- 59:56Speaker 3: really could have hurt. Someone, God, well thank you for
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: the hot dog.
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: Exclusive Hot Dog. Succy check Out Alex bloom On instagram
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: for the Series. Hotlines that's.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Awesome, YEAH i mean it. Is it's very like cutesy pillow,
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: talk but it's also extremely.
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: Violent they're, intense they're matching each other's.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: Freak it's them recognizing this thing in each, other this
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: anger that maybe she's able to love because she has it,
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: too and that there's speeds so tender to each other
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: when they could rip each other.
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: APART i think, THIS i GUESS i just, LIKE i
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: don't feel LIKE i know enough about her to be
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: sure of certain reactions on leaning this, PART.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: I tend to agree with. That, yeah that's kind of
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: one of my big criticisms of the.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: Movie there is something, though that she says THAT i
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: can't remember, verbatim but it's something, LIKE i swear she
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: says something LIKE i saw, you AND i knew LIKE
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: i KNEW i had to see you because and later she's,
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: LIKE i just could tell that we had there's some
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: sort of cod LIKE i see a similarity because of
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: how she talks about that.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: She recognizes something in. HIM i think that that makes
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: a lot of. Sense.
- 1:01:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: Yeah and also it's, like SO i feel like so
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: much Of, lena you, know not to like Discredit Paul Thomas,
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: anderty but so much of WHAT i feel like we
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: know about her is In Emily watson's performance versus like
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: what's really on the, page because she does like the
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: way that she reacts To, BARRY i feel like tells
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: us more about her than she says or we're.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: Told, Right, yeah in any, case they've had a, sexy
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: nice time. Together and Then barry And lena head back
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: to la together and when they're pulling into his, place
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: a truck slims into his. Car it's the minions who
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: are After, barry but he beats them and smashes the
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: truck up a little, bit and then he Takes lena
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: to a hospital to have her minor head injury.
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: Treated it's a cool fight scene.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: Too, YEAH i was like.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Pretty impressed With Adam sandler's.
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: Choreography he grabs the this tire iron truck and just like,
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: yeah like he doesn't kill, anyone, no, no.
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: No and it's, LIKE, I i'm curious what you both
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: think about. THIS i thought that that, was, like really
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: when he does finally get to wail on a fucking
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: evil guy or, whatever, LIKE i found it really really
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: satisfying because it's the first time that we're able to
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: see him direct this anchor at a worthy target and
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: not just like a wall or or you, know like
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: it and he doesn't need to hide. IT i know
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: that it's not the. Like it doesn't you, know it's
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: not the end game of. Anything but it was just
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: nice to See barry get to just like tire iron
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: someone in the face WHO i was, like you, know
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: he's earned, that he's earned. That he keeps a lot. In,
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: yes A, barry but.
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: He's not secretly a serial killer or, something because he
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: could have killed them all and he does.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: It, Yeah, no it's not kill them, all of. Course.
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: No have you guys read the like there's like a
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: punch Shrunk superman theory That arry get Is. Superman i'm,
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: Like i'm not, kiddy LIKE i disagree with, it AND
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: i think IT'S i HONESTLY i SHOULD i honestly think
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: that this theory is evidence of a deep rot and
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: even PEOPLE i, Love but it's out.
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: THERE i.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: Didn't i'm, like of, COURSE i feel like there was
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: like a very specific moment in like the mid twenty
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: tens where just theories like this ran, rampant and to what?
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: End Let barry be a normal. Guy that's the that's
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: the beauty of.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: Him, Yes, Okay so while she's in the, Hospital barry
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: calls the phone sex hotline again and he's. Irate he's
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: screaming At. Georgia then he gets connected To dean and
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: he's screaming at him and they're threatening each. Other and
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Then barry figures out Where dean And georgia, are so
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: he like drops everything and just goes straight To utah
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: to confront. Them barry And dean get in each other's
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: faces And barry, SAYS i have love in my life,
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: now and it makes me stronger than you can, Imagine
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: so put an end to this, now Or i'll beat
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: the hell out of. You And dean is, like all,
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: right it's. Over So barry goes back To La he
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: grabs his little. Piano he takes it To lena's, apartment
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: not sure, why but he apologizes to her for leaving
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: her at the, hospital and he tells the whole story
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: of how he called a phone sex line and those
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: people started harassing. Him but he's taking care of, it
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: and if she gives him six to eight weeks to
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: prove that he's an okay, guy then he can redeem
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: the airline miles from the pudding and go with her
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: wherever she needs to. Go and she does, say, like
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: you left me at the hospital and that wasn't, cool
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: and he's, LIKE i, KNOW i won't do it, again
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: and then they kiss and make up the. End, Yay
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: so let's take another quick break and we'll come back
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: to further discuss.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: And we're.
- 1:05:38Speaker 3: Back where do we want to? START i. DON'T i
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: mean we've covered a.
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: LOT i talked about a.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: Lot i've covered quite a. Lot but, YEAH i guess one,
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: thing let's talk about Uh lena a little bit more
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: because we've talked a lot About. Barry there's still more
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: to be said About. Barry but, sure, YEAH i really like.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: HER i think THAT i wish that we do a
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: little bit more more about. Her but it's tricky because
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: this story is so firmly centered On barry versus the.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: Couple LIKE i don't, know it's a story Where barry
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: falls in, love BUT i don't think it's necessarily like
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: a story about that because all of that sort of.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: Happens that's not the exact.
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: Half, yeah it's about him doing the work mama's.
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah like getting to a place where he can
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: BE i really like my my like dorky head cannon
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: for the, end of this movie is now that he
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: is like comfortable enough and can truly be himself with
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: someone unlike his like dufust brother in. Law lena's the
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: kind of person who could help him find a, therapist
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: who could help him do all of these, things and
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: he would be comfortable enough to like actually ask for
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: that With and it just seems like one of those
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: rare relationships that puts you on a path, towards like
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: closer to who you want to. Be AND i love
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: that for, Them BUT i guess what is a little
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: more elusive to me IS I With, lena we learn
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: a bunch of stuff about her close to the end
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: of the movie is that she's been divorced, Before she's,
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: had you, know a number of, relationships WHICH i think
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: you can feel in her character based on like she's,
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: pretty like she's she's adorable on the dates and she
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: but you can tell like she knows what she's, doing
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: she has more, experience, yeah and like she knows what
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: she's looking for and she's pretty frank about. That AND
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: i Think barry kind of needs.
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: THAT i don't.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: KNOW i JUST i feel like we learn a few
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: facts about, her BUT i don't know because we never
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: like have moments with just. Her it's always her in
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: the context of her being With. Barry AND i know
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: that's how, like that's a lot of stories work as
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: far as like whose perspective is this story told? From
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: but it kind of happens at the expense of we
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: don't get to know her nearly as.
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: Well so AND i don't give a Sh.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: And that's why you're here.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Today he's just fucking, like what's to.
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: DO i think it's a good, movie AND i THINK i,
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: Mean i'm not saying it's.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: Not we're not saying it's a bad. Movie we're just
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: saying we don't know very much about.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: It we're just doing our. Podcast.
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: Grace, yeah that's. True that's. True, See i'd like to
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: SAY i have a message for other upcoming guests Of
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: The Bechdel, cast which IS i just want to remind
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: you guys that you don't have to let the synopsis
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: get out. Quick you have to like wait to, say
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: have the pass The Bechdel test or. Anything you, know
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: you are playing a, Game.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Jigsaw, Vibes let's play a.
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: Game every episode Of The Bechdel cast is a game
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: that can be, won and it's you Versus jamie And,
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: caatelet or or if you're, smart you'll silo one of
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: them off and. Attack BUT i just if any possible
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: Upcoming Bechdel cast members are returning guests or, whatever you can.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: Win you just have to put in the.
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: Work it's, true, Okay and it took years for you
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: to get to this place where you can really demolish
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: us in this.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: Way it took Four Santa claus.
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: EPISODES i, MEAN I i JUST i know all your
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: moves And i'm. Ready i'm ready for our own.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: Game it's.
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: True it's.
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: True, well this is the final episode of The Bechdel. Cast, Everybody.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: Grace was the final boss the whole, time AND i
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: what so?
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: Game oh my.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: Gosh well let me let's talk about things that we
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: did like, then shall. WE i, MEAN i think this
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: movie does a really good job of showing a character
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: with certainly, anxiety possibly also. Depression nothing's ever explicitly, stated
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: but we can glean from his behavior and what he
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: says about how he feels his, loneliness AND i think
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: that's presented with an authenticity that we don't often see
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: in regards to the portrayal of mental. Illness and anxiety
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: and things in. Cinema SO i liked how that was.
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: HANDLED i was ready to come down harder On barry
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Pre grace your history with the, movie BECAUSE i was
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: gonna say something, LIKE i think it's, LIKE i appreciate
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: the portrayal of mental illness in his, character but he
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: also has a really difficult time regulating his, emotions and
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: that often manifests in these violent outbursts where he's trashing
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: a room or breaking glass or punching a wall or,
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: whatever or screaming at his sister and threat to kill,
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: her for, Example and his mental illness doesn't obviously doesn't
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: excuse those. Things AND i was gonna be, Like, okay,
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: well this guy needs to learn to regulate his emotions
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: a little bit, better the way that many men and
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: people of all genders could stand to learn to regulate their.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: Emotions but you, know AND i DON'T i still feel
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: that about his. Character but then you also have to
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: consider that he was like pretty relentlessly bullied by his
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: sisters his entire. Childhood we can, presume.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: Right that's the only, like the only thing we really
- 1:11:37Speaker 3: see even with like the one, sister we do get
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: to know WHO i think is fascinating in her own,
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: right although we don't know much about, her it's mostly
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: in the, performance but that, like even when she's trying
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: to do something quote unquote nice for him by introducing, him, yeah.
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: Setting him up with, someone.
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: But even in those, interactions she can't help but bully.
- 1:11:58Speaker 3: Him WHERE i think it was like when she's introducing
- 1:12:02Speaker 3: him To lena again and she's, like, so are you
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: coming with us or? Not are you coming with us or?
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: Not what the fuck is? That why are you put?
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: It?
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: Right like where she's still like it just seems like
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: it's so baked into their family dynamic to pile On
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: barry and under any and all, circumstances and it doesn't,
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: right it doesn't excuse his. Behavior but it's LIKE i
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: do feel like it at very least we are given
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: the context for like this isn't just like AN Snl
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: Adam sandler character of like this is what he. Does
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: he's the angry, Guy like we're given context for that. Anger.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: Right but, yeah but but BUT i see what you're
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: saying too.
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: WELL i think it's interesting you both use the term,
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: Excuse like does it excuse there's mental? Illness excuse his.
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: Behavior and the OLDER i get and the MORE i
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: deal with my own mental, health the mental serious mental
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: illness of family, members seeing the mental health issues of
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: like unhoused PEOPLE i know and in recovering and. STUFF
- 1:13:13Speaker 4: i wonder if this film could be a moment of
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: like learning, that like it might not be useful to
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: ask like is this? Behave is there an excuse for this?
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: Behavior or like looking at something through the realm of
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: excuse or non. Excuse it's, like what does attaching a
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: moral worth to an action and then weighing it against
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: someone's privilege and versus their mental health issues and stuff like?
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: That what does that? Do as much as is that
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: like necessarily a productive way to look at mental? Illness
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: AND i would suggest that that may maybe it's. Not
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: you know, what we can look at that when we See,
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: barry we can see that he is a person that
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: has the capacity to deal with these emotions in different,
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: ways you, Know but how he has dealt with them
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: in certain moments is by acting out these, tantrums this.
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: Destruction and so what can people who care about him,
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: Do Like i'm talking about him like he's a, Person
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: BUT i, guess like just mental health in, General, LIKE
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: i think the choices when dealing in life with someone
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: who has a serious mental health problem are trying to
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: engage with them to get better or letting go of
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: that as something you haven't want to have anything to
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: do with their control, over you. Know, Yeah AND i think,
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: That LIKE i think the, FACT i, guess like What
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: i'm saying is the fact that we can understand this
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: poor behavior through the lens of his mental illness maybe
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: shows that there's folly in questioning whether or not there
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: is an, excuse like saying if it is morally good or,
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: Bad like just the fact that you can look at
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: through that, lens.
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: You, KNOW i, AGREE i, MEAN i guess to, CLARIFY i,
- 1:15:26Speaker 3: mean at least WHEN i, say like what excuses the,
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: Behavior i'm trying to see it from the perspective of
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: who it's happening, to not who's perpetrating. It and so With,
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: BARRY i, MEAN i part of WHAT i like about
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: this movie is that you see someone who is struggling
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: with mental health right in an in between. Point we
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: don't you, know he doesn't arrive quote unquote at mental
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: health at the end of the, movie because that's not
- 1:15:53Speaker 3: a thing that. Happens we see a like phase of.
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: THIS i, guess, like, Yeah i'm thinking more of like
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: if you're in the shoes Of elizabeth and this is
- 1:16:05Speaker 3: your your brother lashing out at, you and you have
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: done something there has been, sustained like she's treated him
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: like shit for a long. Time but how do, you
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: as like two, people reach a place of peace in that?
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: Way AND i don't. KNOW i, mean and this is
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: again it's like one movie can't do all of. THIS
- 1:16:27Speaker 3: i guess. WHAT i JUST i wish that, WELL i
- 1:16:30Speaker 3: don't even. Know this isn't even a criticism of the.
- 1:16:35Speaker 3: MOVIE i GUESS i just we see a lot of
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: cause and effect in the way that he is the
- 1:16:42Speaker 3: recipient of all of, this this emotional abuse from his.
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: Family they are unable TO i you, know if we're
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: showing them, grace they are completely unable to help, him
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: even when he's, asking, well.
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: They do not treat him like he's mentally or have
- 1:17:01Speaker 4: any recon like that's an important distinct. Ship they just.
- 1:17:03Speaker 3: Say That's, berry which is a very family.
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: Thing.
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: Yeah and if he if he did not deal with
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: this mental illness and they were calling him gay and
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: a homo and, stuff he might just have, laughed, right you,
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: know maybe he might not, have but like the way
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: that they're saying, it if the soundtrack was at that,
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: moment you might not key into it as this like
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: stressful evil thing because they're, LIKE i, mean it's not
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: cool to like call your brother a homo as a derogatory.
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: Thing BUT i could certainly see a, family especially in
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: the early two, thousands you fucking homo and everyone you, know, like,
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: well it's like.
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: Even just like WITH i don't, know LIKE i saw
- 1:17:44Speaker 3: my family recently and they they've like said the same
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: thing about me that is hurtful for my whole, life
- 1:17:53Speaker 3: but it is just an element of the family and
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: and the same goes for other family members in other,
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: directions where it's like that's like the part of the
- 1:18:03Speaker 3: fucked up part of being with a, family where it's
- 1:18:05Speaker 3: just you can normalize it in a family dynamic that
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: feels so impossible to replicate in other places where it's
- 1:18:15Speaker 3: just they they're not even thinking about like it's like
- 1:18:19Speaker 3: they've been doing this for so, long they're not even
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: thinking about why their brother acts the way he, does, like, which, yeah,
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: WELL i.
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Think the scene Where barry pulls aside his brother in
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: law and Has that conversation is really interesting because it
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: shows That barry knows something is amiss with his mental,
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: health he doesn't really quite have the.
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: Words for, it and he also just doesn't like how he.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: Feels he doesn't like how he, feels and he is
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: actively seeking help in a way that he clearly feels uncomfortable.
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: Doing but he realizes like things have maybe hit critical.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: Mass he just smashed a bunch of windows and then
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: was berated for, it so he's just, like something needs to.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: CHANGE i clearly need. HELP i was amused by the
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: line where the brother in law, says, like what's what's the,
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: matter what's? Wrong And barry, SAYS i don't know if
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: anything is wrong BECAUSE i don't know how other people.
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: Are that's such a perfect lie and it kind.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: Of breaks your heart because he clearly has so hard
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: of a time connecting with other people and really getting
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: to know who other people are and how they. Are but,
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: anyway he's trying to seek help and he knows the
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: type of help he, needs and his brother in law
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: is not dismissing, him but he also Betrays berry's, trust
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: And barry says like don't tell my. SISTERS i don't
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: want them to. Know i'm embarrassed about, This LIKE i
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: feel LIKE i don't have ANYONE i can talk to about.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: This and a few scenes, Later, elizabeth WHO i guess
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: is this brother in, law is like they're, partnered and she's,
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: like what was this that you were Telling walter or
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: whatever to get you a? Shrink and what's this crying
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: problem that you? Have and she's sneering and like being
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: very judgy about. It and so he's trying to seek,
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: help and it's like a just the stigma of mental,
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: health especially at this time in two thousand and two
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: when this movie comes, Out like he's willing to seek, help,
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: yeah and the society around him is not being receptive to.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: It SO i think it's interesting too that like he
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: never goes to his sisters because he knows it's a
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: worthless thing to, Do, like you, know he says he's
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: got AND i think there is some truth that he
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: says he's going to his brother in law so he
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: can get that great dentist. Joke AND i celebrate, that
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: but it's also like so telling that he has seven
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: siblings and he is comfortable going to zero of, them
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: and in fact is constantly asking that people don't tell
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: them what he's doing because he clearly like lives in
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: this state of anxiety that he's going to be mocked for,
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: whatever because that's what their dynamic. Is we don't really
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: know why that, is but like we don't really have to.
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: Either it is what it. IS i do, THINK i,
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: mean it would be impossible to get to know all
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: these all seven of these. SISTERS i don't. Know, again
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: it's like not a, criticism it's WHERE i think that
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: Mariy Lynn riska's, character like Her, elizabeth comes across so
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: much in her reactions versus what she actually says and,
- 1:21:35Speaker 3: does BECAUSE i feel like she's played as someone who
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: is also lonely, herself because you, know if you were doing,
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: great you wouldn't be bullying your brother while introducing him to.
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: Someone and there's that great moment towards the, END i,
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: mean it's great for all three of, them where after you,
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: Know barry's In hawaii and And lena is the first
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: person to ever actually respect his request to not tell his,
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: sisters which is another like she sees, him she gets,
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: him and she kind of pokes fun At barry as
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: a joke between the two of, them and Then elizabeth is, like,
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: well you can't say my brother is. WEIRD i can,
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: see which is the most sibling thing you could possibly.
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: Say and, again it just like gives us a little
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: bit of insight into what this family is. Like but
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: outside of, THAT i, mean we mostly, know you, know
- 1:22:33Speaker 3: because this story is the story of this chunk of
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: time In barry's, life we really only know whose sisters
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: are in relation to, him AND i think that's just
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: because of how the story is. Written BUT i do
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: still wish. THAT i do think that there was like
- 1:22:51Speaker 3: a little more room to know a little more About
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: lena in the scope of this. Story but, yeah, yeah But.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: Paul Thomas anderson didn't want this movie to be longer
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: than ninety, minutes, right AND i celebrate, that you, Know,
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: Yeah and that's.
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: Beautiful is this this.
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: Has to be his shortest, movie, right because how long Was.
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: MAGNOLIA i do think it's funny that three hours and eight. Minutes,
- 1:23:15Speaker 3: Yeah so he was, Like, okay, OKAY i get, IT
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: i need to.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Calm, Down let's do a little.
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: One.
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: Yeah it happens kind of at the expense of, us
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: not knowing more About, Lena BUT i don't hate their
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: relationship the WAY i usually hate relationships like hetero romantic
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: relationships in movies where grace to your point of like
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: she took her, shot it worked. OUT i also like
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: that you see a woman asking a man for a
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: first date Because elizabeth brought her to his Like plunger
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: warehouse to be, like come to breakfast with, us and
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: that doesn't pan, out and so she's, like you know,
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: What i'm just gonna, Ask LIKE i already know him
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: a little, bit now we're, acquainted let, me you, know
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: shoot this. Shot and she's, Like i'm going to go
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: out for some food, tomorrow do you want to?
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: COME i mean she she kind of nudges this relationship
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: forward in a way that again like it seems Like
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: barry kind of needs with where he's, at but it's never.
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: Aggressive and also the fact that, like, yeah there's a,
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: phrase she drops the hint, repeatedly like even though it's
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: based off of like a Random Barry white lie of, like,
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: Oh i'm going To hawaii For plunger. Work you're like,
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: sure WHICH i think she kind of is, like oh,
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: well BUT i like that, again like the invitation To
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: hawaii is. Explicit she's, like, well if you're there and
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: you want to hang, OUT i would love to see.
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: You and she says that more than once and, like,
- 1:24:42Speaker 3: YEAH i don't. Know even though it's like awkward and
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: they're both very work to, progress there are adults about,
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: it and she says.
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: Very importantly after they fucking shit on the bed in that,
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: order she's, like you've got me out of my. Room
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: you came and you got me out of my. Room
- 1:25:03Speaker 4: would just like to me like also kind of a
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: sign that they're of the same, feather you, know like, Introverted,
- 1:25:10Speaker 4: yeah a, feather you, know like it's. Beautiful it, is
- 1:25:15Speaker 4: it is.
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: Nice and, again and we already touched on this, too
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: but after he literally abandons her at the hospital after
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: this car, accident.
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: Which isn't, great but ALSO i feel, like because we're
- 1:25:27Speaker 3: so in his head at that, point it honestly didn't
- 1:25:29Speaker 3: even register with me at. FIRST i was, like, yeah
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: he's got he's got unfinished, business he's got to finish.
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: This it did register with me WHERE i was, like, wait,
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: yeah did he just leave her? There and then she,
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: Asks she's, like where's?
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: That where's the?
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: Guy came, with and the nurses, like.
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: HMMM i don't, KNOW i, okay, yeah and she establishes
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: a boundary and she, says you can't do things like
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: that if we're gonna be together or see each. Other
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: and he seems to recognize, that and he seems determined
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: not only to redeemed the airline miles from the, pudding
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: but to redeem.
- 1:26:03Speaker 3: Himself and it just feels very clear that he will
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: BECAUSE i, mean it's also like there's of all of
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: the different complicated aspects Of barry's. CHARACTER i feel like
- 1:26:16Speaker 3: he's he's also just like looking to be respected by,
- 1:26:20Speaker 3: someone where he's like so many people in his. LIFE i,
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: mean he sort of has a friend In, lance but
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: that is a very LIKE i, Mean Louis gospond's, amazing
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: And Louis gusbond is very concerned about. Him he's, like
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: please go on a, vacation WHICH i thought was very,
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: funny but that, like, yeah this is like a relationship
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: where he could feel respected, too where it's like it's
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: just clear that he doesn't have that in other areas
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: of his, life does. ANYONE i don't really have anything
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: to say About Dean. Trumbull he shows up late in the.
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: Movie he's there and you're, like and that Was Dean.
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: Trumbull just That Philip Seymour hoffman can be in a
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: movie for five minutes or less and still just take it.
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: Crushing he is okay the Most so like the thing
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: About Dean troumble the Mattress, man first of, all very
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: important to. Know they made like sketches for this movie,
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: too With Philip seymour often that you can find.
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: Online, really that's so. Fun that makes.
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: Sense, yeah there's like two three of, them and they're
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: like little like, ads and one of them he falls
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: like fifty feet onto a mattress IF i remember. Correct
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: AND i do think like he is kind of similar
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: To he's like similar and opposite To. Berry you, know
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: this is. Supermanny he is kind of like Like Barry's
- 1:27:48Speaker 4: lexolutor and that he's Like barry has this like fated
- 1:27:53Speaker 4: love and romance in his life and that is like
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: almost supernaturally fairy tale like and And Dean trumbll so.
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: Opposite like he he's paid women to be around, him you,
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: know and he's paying men to like do stuff for
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: him that a friend MIGHT i, mean not that a
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: friend would go beat. It, well but you, know he
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: seems very. Lonely he has his own. Warehouse they both
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: have a. Warehouse they both have these, businesses but they're
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: like it's like a very different way That barry could
- 1:28:26Speaker 4: have popped up turned.
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: Out it's a different way To, yeah it's like a
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: it's a more assertive person's version of keeping control in
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: like this state of loneliness that he's. IN i didn't
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: know about the. Sketches it's so. Funny, well it.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: Took me forever to realize That barry is the owner
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: of this plunger, business that he's not an, employee that
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: this is his. Business, yeah he owns.
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: It it's his, business and he's proud of.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: It because he doesn't operate it in such a way
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: where he's the boss. Man and in, fact when the
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: forklift is, crashing like all the products are spilling and
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: breaking stuff like, that he's just, like, hi you, Guys,
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: okay anyway back to the WOMAN i have a crush, on.
- 1:29:13Speaker 3: Which is really what most bosses, do even good Bosses i've,
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: had just are, like, hey you good in. HERE i
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: gotta go, bye like, cool just make sure the check's
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: clear and leave me. Alone that's the ideal. Boss.
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: Right one of the THINGS i found fascinating About dean
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: and his minions is that they keep Shaming barry for
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: quote unquote being a pervert and acting like he deserves
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: to be blackmailed and threatened and beaten up because he
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: had the audacity to call a phone sex. Hotline and it's,
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: like you're the one running the phone sex hot, line
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: so why are you shaming your own clientele for engaging
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: with sex? Workers which feels bizarre, now but it was
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: two thousand and, two so.
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: WELL i also wrote down BECAUSE i had the same
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: THOUGHT i wrote, Down is this a utah?
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: THING i don't.
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: KNOW i don't. KNOW i think it was simply a
- 1:30:11Speaker 4: way for them to get money.
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: Out of, Him, right you should shame him.
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: More and also the perversion is that he's ashamed of
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: wanting to fuck a lady almost like these are guys
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: that seemingly fuck like and openly are misogynistic and, Stuff
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: AND i think what they if there's any real anger
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: there is that they think he thinks he's better than,
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: them right or, something you. Know, yeah it's like they're,
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: like we're all getting. Gash why are you try to
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: act what you don't want. Gash that's WHAT i want to.
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: Say was a line that was cut out of the.
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: Script that is WHY i put money on. It PAUL
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: i bettied twenty dollars that that was in the. Script and,
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: please he's a.
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: Page members so he'll.
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: Hear and this isn't even A patreon.
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: EPISODE I i almost got to Meet Paul Thomas anderson,
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: recently kind Of oh, wow because a friend of mine
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: was briefly dating a friend of his but then she
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: stopped dating.
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: Him oh, Wow so WHAT i?
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: SAY i almost got to do. THAT i, mean if
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: my head it was gonna happen for a.
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: Second but, well just to take a little signed bar he,
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: again he was, like, Wow magnolia was so. Long MAYBE
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: i shouldn't do that again for my next. Movie so
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: he was determined to make it around ninety, minutes not
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: to really exceed. That he also specifically wrote The barry
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: character With Adam sandler in, mind Because Paul Thomas anderson
- 1:31:45Speaker 2: Loved Adam sandler and his, movies Particularly Big, daddy and
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: then he had seen different performances of his in various sketch,
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: shows and he's, like he has to be In punch Drunk.
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: Love Joanne seller was quote unquote be fuddled That Paul
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: Thomas anderson wanted to Cast Adam sandler and he had
- 1:32:09Speaker 2: to convince her That sandler was the right person for the.
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: Job and then WHILE pta was Filming, magnolia he Calls
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: Adam sandler and he's, Like i'm writing this movie for.
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: You And Adam sandler was, like that's. NICE i don't
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: really know who you, are but. God and Then Adam
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: sandler Watched magnolia after it came, out and then he
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: felt quote unquote fucking terrified and was very intimidated By
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: PTA's like directorial. Prowess And Adam sandler was, LIKE i
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: don't know IF i can do.
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: This it's like you can do, it kinga so and he,
- 1:32:48Speaker 3: can and he CAN i do kind of like BECAUSE
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: i wasn't An Adam sandler kid growing, UP i was
- 1:32:54Speaker 3: kept From Adam sandler outside Of Big daddy for some.
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: Reason but samil introduction To Adam Sandler Big daddy was
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: the first ONE i was able to. Watch BUT i
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: got to Watch Adam sandler still kind of, young but
- 1:33:09Speaker 4: it felt like it had been a million. Years, Yeah
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: LIKE i got to watch my First Adam sandler movie
- 1:33:14Speaker 4: besides part Of Big daddy On Comedy central Was Billy
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: madison AND i got to watch that WHEN i was
- 1:33:20Speaker 4: like ten or, eleven but it felt like all my
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: friends had gotten to see all of. Them so even
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: THOUGH i GUESS i was still young at the, TIME
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: i was Like jesus finally spent billion.
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: Years and for more On Adam sandler as a comedic
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: persona versus this particular, movie you can go. To we
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: recently Covered Eight Crazy, nights where we started talking about
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: his career more.
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: Busy well that's just not.
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: True well that's just not. True let's be, serious.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: Pedally.
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: False the other thing About Crazy, nights AND i think
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: this is very, important the Little man gets frozen at
- 1:34:02Speaker 4: a big block of.
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: Pool, yes.
- 1:34:06Speaker 5: We, do we do.
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: Good we do talk about that in.
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: Depth we also talk ABOUT i think worth Mentioning Adam Sandler's,
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: zionism and they go into depth on The Eight Crazy nights.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: Episode so if you want to hear, more refer back
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: to that.
- 1:34:21Speaker 3: Episode, yeah that's What that's WHAT i was getting at
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: is we have A fullir.
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: Discussion in any, case any other thoughts On Punch Drunk.
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: LOVE i Have there's one thing that we didn't touch,
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: on which is the moment of confrontation when he rips
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: the phone headset off and he's got the phone the
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: telephone like handset or whatever with him when he gets
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: To utah and he's, Like i've got a love in
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: my life and that makes me strong and, say that's,
- 1:34:58Speaker 4: that you, Know AND i, think then that is really
- 1:35:02Speaker 4: living up the desire that a part of your life
- 1:35:04Speaker 4: can be. Over THAT i think is such a desire
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: of someone dealing with mental illness that the period of
- 1:35:13Speaker 4: my life in WHICH i am bipolar can be, done you.
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: Know SO i think it's. Interesting the wish fulfillment, THERE
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: i think is is something that also really got, me
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: you know because when we're talking about like like like like,
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: well if their lives were to continue on after this, film,
- 1:35:33Speaker 4: YES i do think That lena could help him get
- 1:35:38Speaker 4: into therapy Actually audiadia out of it for the purpose
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: of this. Film in that moment he defeats it and
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: that's you, know that's all we, see you, Know AND
- 1:35:46Speaker 4: i think that's that offers like something like beautiful THAT
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: i haven't really seen in other movies, too like just
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: being done with.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: It hell, yeah AND i MEAN i was expecting more
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: of a violent confrontation in that scene in Between barry
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: and The Philip Seymour hoffman. Character but you can sense
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: That dean probably couldn't hold his own in a, fight
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: and that's why he sends his minions and he doesn't
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: actually want to fight him and engage in. Violence and
- 1:36:19Speaker 2: then he's just, Like, okay that's. That and then As
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: barry's walking, away he's, like, yeah you better, go you fucking.
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: Pervert and Then barry turns back around he's, LIKE i
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: fucking warned. You and then and Then dean goes that that's,
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: that and then he runs. Away so it's just like this,
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: guy he's a. COWARD i don't know what my point is,
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: exactly but so.
- 1:36:41Speaker 4: It does pass The bechdel test so.
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: WELL i think that there is, like genuinely this is
- 1:36:49Speaker 3: So barry's story that, like, SPIRITUALLY i don't think it,
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: does BUT i do think it. Might there might have
- 1:36:56Speaker 3: been like a technical thing where there's a few times
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: where like as if it The lena talk about their
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: jobs or, yeah going.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: To the restaurant for.
- 1:37:04Speaker 4: Breakfast that's, true And Jerry egan is a woman.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: And people are saying he's Both superman and a.
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: Woman, Well superman is a.
- 1:37:15Speaker 3: Woman, well so many, breakings so many breaking.
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: Started, well as far as our nipple scale, goes where
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: we rate the movie based on a scale of zero
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: to five, nipples examining it through an intersectional feminist, LENS
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: i don't know even a little, bit like.
- 1:37:34Speaker 3: It's really, like DOESN'T i. Don't, YEAH i don't really.
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: Know doesn't. Apply, yeah we have another movie. Recently i'm
- 1:37:40Speaker 2: going to give it five.
- 1:37:42Speaker 4: Nipples, Okay i'm gonna give.
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: It i'll give it five toilet plungers on the plunger.
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: Scale Ok get, Yeah i'll give it five novelty toilet. Plungers.
- 1:37:54Speaker 3: Yeah i'm forgoing the nipple scale for this one because
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: it is so unique in so many.
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: Ways it's a story that and sends. Gender let's go with.
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: That and that's Why i'm giving it five. PLUNGERS i think.
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: That's Why i'm giving. It i'm giving it five nipples
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: BECAUSE i do think that this, MOVIE i do think
- 1:38:14Speaker 4: it's in conversation with what it means to be a,
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: man and it presents something radically different and beautiful than
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: what very but himself believes he has to be and
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: what his sisters and this are forcing on, him and
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: he breaks from. That, yeah this is, true and then
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: he becomes gay and has a wife and he's a.
- 1:38:35Speaker 4: Woman they do something more than you. Haul they like
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: FedEx air cargo themselves around the.
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: World they go To.
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: Hawaii their second data is their SECOND datea is In hawaii.
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: THERE i DO i think you're, right like where the
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: sisters are mocking him because he's not meeting their threshold
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: for what masculinity looks. Like and how he finds happy
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: to is by just being who he, is and just.
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: The way that society slash patriarchy does not permit men
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: to express or feel or engage with their, emotions and
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: especially if those emotions are things like sadness and loneliness and.
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: Insecurity and that's very clearly What barry's dealing. With and
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: he's trying to address his issues with mental, health and
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: no one is willing to help, him, really or at
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: least not the people in his. Family and it.
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: Also feels like a good time capsule, too because it's,
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: like not only does no one help, him it seems
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: like no one knows, how which does feel very true
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: of the early two thousands where there were conversations around mental, health.
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: But going to a quote unquote shrink AND i.
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: Think it was considered like emasculating too yes for a
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: man to want like a.
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: Therapist, Definitely, grace thank you for joining.
- 1:39:59Speaker 3: Us come back from, Megalais, OH i will come. Back
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: please don't MAKE i was, Like caitlin doesn't want to Do, Actually.
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: Grace this might be how you like jettisoned me off
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: of the podcast BECAUSE i refuse to do a megas.
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: Episode so you've seen.
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: It, yes in, yeah the whole, experience like with the
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: with the usher going up to the. Screen, no but
- 1:40:28Speaker 4: well then it doesn't really, count.
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: So, yeah you didn't really see.
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: It what do you dislike about? Me we don't have.
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: Time but what we do have time for tell us
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: about where people can follow you on social? Media plug
- 1:40:47Speaker 2: what you want to, plum.
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: Tell us That pat tell us. Everything.
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: Well the movie is Called We Are, pat and it
- 1:40:54Speaker 4: is a it's a lot of, things but it's at it's,
- 1:41:00Speaker 4: core it's about How i'm a very scared. Person it is,
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: It but So We Are pat is a documentary that
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: just ME i tried back out That i'm in AND
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: i wrote sketches for that is like looking back at
- 1:41:17Speaker 4: the Character pat FROM snl and the widely derided Film It's,
- 1:41:22Speaker 4: pat And pat is this androgynous character that no one
- 1:41:27Speaker 4: can tell If pat is a man or a. Woman,
- 1:41:30Speaker 4: Notably pat is not non. Binary pat knows what Sex
- 1:41:33Speaker 4: pat is and Believes pat isn't interpreted as, such you,
- 1:41:37Speaker 4: know does not really recognize that people don't. Know so
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: it's looking back at that finding a lot of humor in,
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: it trying to, like certain people hate On pat a.
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: Lot you, Know i'm not one of those. PEOPLE i Love.
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: Pat it's a really good movie and it's AND i
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: think it Is it does something THAT i haven't really
- 1:42:03Speaker 4: seen another documentary, do which is have a comedian contend
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: with the consequences of their. Comedy And julia does it
- 1:42:12Speaker 4: in a way THAT'S i wouldn't say, apologetic but empathetic and.
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: Understanding and it has become a good friend of mine
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: throughout this like shooting, Process Julia Sweeney, rocks AND i
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: think it is such a GOOD i think you should
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: watch it once it gets. Sold it's gonna be a
