- 0:02Hey, welcome to the City Point Church podcast.
- 0:04Thanks for joining us. Every day is an opportunity to
- 0:07take hold of. So we hope this message inspires
- 0:10you and build your faith, but it helps you have more of a God
- 0:13perspective for your day. Enjoy.
- 0:18Thinking of, you know, seeing people who are good looking, but
- 0:20also just where people's focus is over here on this cross
- 0:27faith, love, hope. We have a stack of praise
- 0:30reports and a stack of prayer requests.
- 0:33But can I just encourage everybody here to not let the
- 0:38prayer requests that you have here be your focus, but rather
- 0:44let the answer, the hope be your focus?
- 0:50Because, you know, one of the privileges of being a pastor in
- 0:53this church is I get to hear lots of people's stories, both
- 0:57trauma and joy. So it's not all, you know, like
- 1:00this is mental health stuff. And in all of it, whether it's
- 1:05good or bad, rich or poor, all direction needs to be back to
- 1:10Jesus. All of it, absolutely all of it
- 1:13because there is literally no hope in anything except for God
- 1:19through Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit and hope in God
- 1:23is the only way to see clearly. So you'll focus what what do you
- 1:28see clearly and that's the title for today's message.
- 1:33During the week I spent the night at my brother in I love
- 1:45that she goes, Uncle John, she goes, I just want to be a better
- 1:48me. And just this morning Pastor
- 1:52Graham was saying, how do you be a better you?
- 1:56How do we do that? Is it through self help books?
- 2:01They might help a little bit, but they're definitely not the
- 2:04answer. What about yoga, drugs, being
- 2:09drunk all the time? The answer to being a better
- 2:14version of you is actually for you to see clearly.
- 2:19It really, really is. And one of the first points in
- 2:23this message about how to see clearly is you must see God,
- 2:29must see God. And so we'll begin in Matthew 5.
- 2:34Don't have to open up the Bible for those who are going to take
- 2:37notes today. You are going to have a hand
- 2:38cramp. I'm so sorry.
- 2:42All right, so Matthew 5 you've got the beatitudes as Jesus
- 2:45preaching on a mountain and it says in Matthew 5, verse 8,
- 2:49important verse for today's message.
- 2:51Blessed are the purer in heart for they shall see God.
- 2:57But there is so much more to this in Greek ortos Hotheus
- 3:02optomini, see God. But the word, see God there, see
- 3:07optomini. It doesn't just mean oh, I'm
- 3:09looking at God. It's been fully aware of God.
- 3:14It's seeing God what I love about Tom and I, It also means
- 3:19to be seen. Who wants to be seen by God?
- 3:28But this verse is not present. Sorry is not future tense.
- 3:32Jesus does not say blessed are the pure in heart for that one
- 3:34day they're going to see God when they die.
- 3:37He says blessed are the pure in heart.
- 3:38For they do see God. They see God.
- 3:45They're aware of him everywhere. They're seeing God right now.
- 3:50Not the toast. Ever seen that?
- 3:51You know, people, they say, I see Jesus.
- 3:56That's actually called pareidolia.
- 4:00Yeah. And people travel all over the
- 4:01world because someone on their window, you know, like someone's
- 4:04spilled the coffee and it makes a face and they're like Jesus.
- 4:11Pastor Mike actually said he preached here and something I
- 4:15wrote down from his message, he says lift up your eyes, let the
- 4:19invisible become invisible. That was great because God is in
- 4:25all things. We read that in Scripture,
- 4:27Ephesians 4 verse 6 where it says one God and Father of all
- 4:31who is above all and through all and in you all, but He is
- 4:36through all. If He's through all, then we
- 4:39should see Him through all and we need to see God daily.
- 4:47People say to me, but I don't see God.
- 4:49Well, you need to learn to see Him daily because blessed are
- 4:55the pure in heart. They will see God.
- 4:58You'll notice it says pure in heart, not perfect.
- 5:03Isn't that a good thing Or you sinners?
- 5:09Everyone's like he's right. Because the word pure here, the
- 5:15Greek word cathros, it doesn't mean you're a perfect person.
- 5:20It means pure. And there's a difference.
- 5:25Pure cathros really refers to being refined, refined in a
- 5:30fire, just like gold goes through refining process.
- 5:36Purity, not perfection, purity. Is anyone pure?
- 5:42Of course not. But what I love when Jesus says
- 5:46is this is actually in John 15 for those who want to write it
- 5:49down. John 15 one to three Jesus says
- 5:52and he's talking about being pruned.
- 5:54So verses one and two, he's talking about being pruned.
- 5:58In verse 3, Jesus says you are already clean, Cathros, you are
- 6:04already pure because of the word which I have spoken to you.
- 6:10Now Jesus never said to his disciples, geez, you guys are
- 6:13the most perfect bunch of people I've ever met.
- 6:15That's why you get to be my disciples.
- 6:17But He did say you are pure because of the words which I
- 6:23have spoken to you. Pruning is such an interesting
- 6:28subject to me. Rachel showed me this actually,
- 6:31because we have trees, actually we have anniversary trees.
- 6:34So we, we try and buy a tree, you know, it's lovely.
- 6:38And as I've mentioned before, one of those trees, it's one of
- 6:41those trees that all the leaves is all the leaves every winter.
- 6:44Yeah, literally yesterday I walked out and I said to Rachel,
- 6:47it's dead again. She's like, how long is this
- 6:51going to persist? I'm like, I don't know.
- 6:53How long is it going to keep losing its leaves?
- 6:56So anyway, The thing is, is Rachel has been pruning some of
- 6:59the trees and on the outside when you see someone cutting off
- 7:05all the branches, it looks like they are destroying it.
- 7:12And sometimes when God's pruning our lives, it looks like God is
- 7:17destroying it. But pruning is an essential part
- 7:24of making a tree healthier and stronger.
- 7:28So Jesus is saying I have made you pure.
- 7:33Now if you are pure, then you get to see God.
- 7:39So don't get upset and don't get all broken and disappointed and
- 7:43depressed when there are things in your life that God's cutting
- 7:47off and you think God must hate me?
- 7:49No, He just wants you to see him.
- 7:55Learning to see, it's like taking up your cross daily.
- 8:00I've had people over the years, they're like, John, I'm still
- 8:03just a Sinner. I'm like, no, you are not.
- 8:06You are the righteousness of Christ.
- 8:08Anyone who believes in Jesus is completely pure.
- 8:13Are you perfect? No.
- 8:14Oh my gosh, you're disgusting. So we are right.
- 8:16But I heard years ago someone said, they said you will never
- 8:21know just how disgusting your church is because we all have
- 8:26things that we all deal with. But what happens is the lie of
- 8:30the enemy is to say, Oh yeah, there you go.
- 8:32That's your identity. It is not your identity.
- 8:35Your identity is in Christ. What do you see?
- 8:41What do you see? Yeah, that purity is a gift from
- 8:43God. It really is.
- 8:44Hey, 01 day, I'm going to preach the whole message on that purity
- 8:49because it is staggering what God has promised his people who
- 8:52just, we just want to lean into him.
- 8:53Absolutely staggering. It's just beautiful, mind
- 8:55blowing stuff. Anyway, get back to the actual
- 8:57message, John. So what do you see and why does
- 9:02it matter? Because where you focus,
- 9:08especially if you're not focused on God, will bring about other
- 9:14things in your life that aren't godly.
- 9:16Like we can actually choose not to see God.
- 9:18Let me give you some examples. OK, so in Genesis 20, so if we
- 9:23don't see God, we see other things in Genesis 20, Abraham,
- 9:26if you can read the events yourself, but Abraham gives his
- 9:29wife to some other guy called Abimelech, right?
- 9:33And God in a dream shows up to Abimelech.
- 9:37And this is in Genesis 20 verse 3.
- 9:39It's not on the screen, but it says indeed, you are a dead man
- 9:43because of the woman you have taken for.
- 9:45She is a man's wife. And Abim looks like, well, dude,
- 9:50I didn't know like, like this guy, Abraham literally gave me
- 9:55this woman and out of innocence, I thought it was going to be OK
- 9:59to marry her. And I was like, no, don't touch
- 10:01her. You're like, so Abraham.
- 10:04Abimelech then confronts Abraham and this is what Abimelech says
- 10:08to Abraham. He said, what do you have in
- 10:12view? What did you have in view?
- 10:15That's actually a very good translation.
- 10:18Not what have you done? What have you in view that you
- 10:25have done this thing? Hebrew word rah.
- 10:29Because Abraham here saw fear. He thought Abimelech was going
- 10:34to kill him. He's like, how do I Pierce this
- 10:36guy? I don't know, give him the wife.
- 10:38He saw fear, so his focus was fear.
- 10:43He forgot about the promises of God.
- 10:45His focus was not on God or the hope that God had for him.
- 10:49His focus was on fear. Now don't be hating on Abraham
- 10:54because we all do this. We often give away precious
- 10:59things because our focus is fear sometimes.
- 11:07And this generation is wildly persuaded this way is a very
- 11:15polite way of saying it. Some this whole generation is
- 11:18persuaded not to have children, and they go, no, no children.
- 11:23Why? Oh, because the way this world
- 11:26is going. So you're giving up something
- 11:29precious because you are focused on the fear?
- 11:34What about people who say to me, oh, you know something?
- 11:37I'm not, We're not, we're not getting married.
- 11:39That's crazy. Why?
- 11:40Oh, the divorce rate is so high? Oh.
- 11:43So instead of focusing on God, His promises for a marriage and
- 11:49wanting to do things God's way, you are focusing on your fear.
- 11:54See, we often give up things that are precious for fear.
- 12:01In Genesis 27, one and two. Genesis 27, the one of the
- 12:07patriarchs of the Bible, his name's Isaac.
- 12:09All right, so you can read this yourself.
- 12:12But Isaac, he thinks he's going to die.
- 12:17He's come to the end of his life.
- 12:19And this is what it says in Genesis 27 one and two, it says.
- 12:22Now it came to pass when Isaac was old and his eyes were so dim
- 12:27that he could not see, that he called Esau, that's his oldest
- 12:31son, and said to him, My son. And Esau said, here I am.
- 12:37And then Isaac says to him, Behold, now I am old and I do
- 12:41not know the day of my death. So the story continues where
- 12:48Esau and I Esau goes out, makes him a meal, and then there's
- 12:51this big hole, jumble, jumble between Esau and his brother
- 12:54Jacob. It's a mess.
- 12:56What I want to focus on here isn't the mess of hit their
- 13:00sons, OK? No, I want to focus on the fact
- 13:05that Isaac did not die for chapters later.
- 13:11Many, many chapters later. There are some scholars who
- 13:18believe that between what is it, Genesis 27 and Genesis 35 where
- 13:27Isaac actually dies, is about 50 years.
- 13:33You think Days of Our Lives has a long death scenes, 50 years.
- 13:41His focus, his view, was on the death and actually he made a
- 13:50mess of the whole situation with his sons, Esau and Jacob,
- 13:55because he rushed the story instead of actually waiting for
- 13:58the moment he was dying. No, no, he got everyone worked
- 14:01up and they all went and did silly things.
- 14:03Can you be a Mac? Can you imagine being married to
- 14:06Isaac? It's like the wife says, honey,
- 14:12what do you want for dinner tonight?
- 14:13Well, considering it's my last meal.
- 14:18And he did that for 50 years. I think probably after about 20,
- 14:24she was like, just toy. Sorry, I don't know if that's
- 14:31disrespectful. But seriously, that was what his
- 14:38focus was. His focus was not on any hope at
- 14:43all. Then we got Nebuchadnezzar,
- 14:47Daniel 4:30 That was a great king, and this is what it says.
- 14:52The king spoke, saying, is this not great Babylon that I have
- 14:56built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honour
- 15:01of my My Majesty? Remember that My Majesty in 31
- 15:06while the word was still in the King's mouth, God was like Nope.
- 15:11And for seven years he became this mental animal, eating, it
- 15:18says in verse 33, that very hour the word was fulfilled
- 15:22concerning Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from men in a
- 15:25grass, yeah, like oxen. His body was wet with the dew of
- 15:30heaven, till his hair had grown like eagles feathers, and his
- 15:34nails like birds claws. Horrible.
- 15:38But at the end of four, sorry, seven years in verse 34, it says
- 15:44and at the end of the time I Nebuchadnezzar, what'd he do?
- 15:48Lifted my eyes to heaven. So now he sees now he has the
- 15:55right focus and I understand and return to me and I bless thee
- 16:01most high and praise and honoured him who lives forever.
- 16:05You will notice in these verses he did not go and then I'm like
- 16:09God, why did you do that? He was like, I've changed my
- 16:13focus. And then he found his answer
- 16:20because all of our answers come from him.
- 16:23So .2 I got this inspiration from Pastor Isaac last week,
- 16:29Just see it. And last week he's like, just do
- 16:32it. Just see it.
- 16:34All right? Now, this is really easy to say,
- 16:36but how do we just see it in our house?
- 16:40Rachel will say, and I think some, maybe a lot of people can
- 16:43relate to this. Rachel will say, John, can you
- 16:44please get the bread out of the cupboard?
- 16:48I hate that. I really do open the cupboard.
- 16:52It's not in there. She's like, yeah, it is.
- 16:56Nope, I'm not even making this up.
- 16:58Hey, I know it's not so cliche, but I've just done this so many
- 17:01times. And then sure enough, she'll get
- 17:02up and it's right in front of me.
- 17:04OK. We call it a boy.
- 17:06Look, I don't know if that's sexist or not.
- 17:07OK, cool. It's accurate.
- 17:10Is it? I just can't believe it.
- 17:12It's actually embarrassing. And I get really, like, nervous.
- 17:14I'm like, I'm going to fail. I just know it.
- 17:19Maybe that makes it worse because I'm focused on the fear
- 17:22instead of the bread. Anyway, yeah, I don't know.
- 17:26I'm preaching to myself. It's OK.
- 17:30You know, sometimes we don't see.
- 17:31We don't just see it because we want to keep the status quo.
- 17:34If you're familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan, you
- 17:37know, the leaders of the temple establishment and the priests,
- 17:43there was someone beat up, dying and bleeding, but they were
- 17:46concerned that it would disrupt their position.
- 17:49So they chose not to look, you know, so they didn't see what
- 17:53they were meant to be seen. And it was actually the Good
- 17:56Samaritan who came along and did see it.
- 18:02Other ones, actually, there's a very interesting terminology.
- 18:05It's called the Badda Minehoff. Has anyone heard that?
- 18:08Byda Minehoff? It's where you see things that
- 18:11you wouldn't have seen beforehand.
- 18:12A good example. If you suddenly decide one day
- 18:16you want to buy a motorbike, yeah, it's always a great thing.
- 18:22You then suddenly be care, become aware that there are many
- 18:27other motorbikes around. Yeah.
- 18:30So something that you have suddenly becomes very obvious.
- 18:33Like I, when I was young, I actually owned one of those
- 18:36little mini miners. Little mini.
- 18:39I did not realize how many were they were until I had one.
- 18:43They're everywhere. Now that I haven't got 1, I
- 18:47don't think they even exist anymore.
- 18:50All right, so this does actually occur because your brain having
- 18:54recently focused on a item, just simply becomes attuned to it.
- 18:59But are we being attuned to God? Like that's that's a God-given
- 19:03gift. It's where God's like, you know,
- 19:06when you become aware of me, when you see me, I've actually
- 19:10got something in your brain that's going to see and learn to
- 19:14see me everywhere. It's not just there so that you
- 19:17see other minis or other motorbikes.
- 19:20It's a cognitive based biased route.
- 19:23Actually, sometimes we're focused on previous herds.
- 19:27Are you focused on your past so much that you can't see your
- 19:30future? And maybe you're just simply
- 19:32looking at the wrong thing, like that's not your wife.
- 19:39Maybe you're looking at your own success, like Mr.
- 19:42Nebuchadnezzar. Yeah, and often we're so
- 19:45overwhelmed by our circumstances that we're actually no longer
- 19:49able to recognize the answer right in front of us.
- 19:51So, you know, I understand OK, I've got my own story and I've
- 19:55got my own journey as well. And a lot of time I've had to
- 19:58go, I need to refocus and engage the correct like looking pattern
- 20:05and see God again because when we.
- 20:10Re engage when we find our hope, when we lift up our eyes, often
- 20:14the answer has always been right in front of us.
- 20:17In Genesis 21. There's an event here where you
- 20:23have what's called Hagar. That's one of Abraham's wives,
- 20:27right? Hagar and she gives birth.
- 20:31She has this child named Ishmael.
- 20:33And basically the whole house erupts.
- 20:35It's just turns to pure hell. And so they kick Hagar and
- 20:39Ishmael out. Like, I mean, I think this is
- 20:40for the second time, but it's permanent.
- 20:42It's like go away. They they so they leave rah rah
- 20:47and they are about to die of thirst actually.
- 20:54And so in Genesis 2116, it says, and I'll just read it through.
- 20:58Oh, something good. Then she went and sat down
- 21:01across from him. That's across from Ishmael at a
- 21:04distance of about a bow shot. OK, so, you know, actually a
- 21:07fair distance because she could not deal.
- 21:13She's like, my child is about to die of thirst.
- 21:17This, this is too much. I I can't even I can't even see
- 21:21it anymore. I just can't deal with this.
- 21:23So she goes away right? And she says to herself, let me
- 21:28not see the death of the boy. So she sat opposite him and
- 21:34lifted a voice and wept. Genesis 27/21/17 And God heard
- 21:38the voice of the lad. Then the Angel of God called out
- 21:43to Hagar out of heaven and said, What ails you Hagar?
- 21:47Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.
- 21:52Interesting point. God didn't say Hagar.
- 21:56I've heard you cry and I'm here to answer your prayer because
- 22:00God's focus was already focused on the problem.
- 22:05God's focus was already I'm going to fix this.
- 22:08I've got an answer. God's focus is always on your
- 22:14prayer requests, not just on you.
- 22:18And then he deals with you like he did with Hagar.
- 22:21So God's like, you know something.
- 22:22I know that you couldn't deal with this trauma, but I'm right
- 22:25there at that moment with a purpose and a plan for this.
- 22:34And verse 18, it says, arise, lift the lad and hold him with
- 22:41your hand, for I will make him a great nation.
- 22:44Verse 19 Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water
- 22:50and she went and filled the skin with water and gave the lad a
- 22:54drink. Now there's a bunch of theories
- 22:56about this like was the well already there or did God just
- 23:01make a well happen? The thing is that the well was
- 23:06probably already there because it does not say that God made a
- 23:10well. It just says that she lifted her
- 23:14eyes and then God opened her eyes because her focus was back
- 23:18on Hope, her focus was back on God.
- 23:22And when you bring your focus back to God, your eyes are
- 23:27opened. Always do, always bring yourself
- 23:31back. In Second King Six, there was a
- 23:34bunch of enemies surrounding the building called Dothan, which is
- 23:38where Elisha was staying, and Elisha's servant was freaking
- 23:42out. OK, because the Syrian Army has
- 23:44surrounded it. They were going to slaughter
- 23:45everybody and then Elijah prayed and said, Lord, I pray that you
- 23:49open his eyes that he may see. Then the Lord opened the eyes of
- 23:54the young man and he saw and behold the mountain was full of
- 23:58horses and Chariots of fire. That would be awesome to see.
- 24:02Hey all around Elijah .3 singers and musicians you can come up
- 24:07now. That'd be great.
- 24:08Thank you so much, Alex. He just literally sat down.
- 24:14He just did like we've been 10 seconds ago.
- 24:17Lovely. All right, you know, in Joel,
- 24:20I'm not going to go through this because we've run out of time,
- 24:23but I do want to explain some principles of how to do this
- 24:26because .3 is see your position. See your position.
- 24:32You know, in Joel 232, Romans 10/13, Acts 221, it says that
- 24:37all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.
- 24:40Beautiful verse. It's very good for you to etch
- 24:43that one in your mind actually, because sometimes we think we
- 24:50know who will make it to heaven and who won't.
- 24:54And I like to think, well, all who call on the name of the Lord
- 24:57will be saved. But let's go to the next one in
- 25:00Matthew 721 to 23. Important verse in context it
- 25:05says on that day many will say to me, Lord Lord, did we not
- 25:08prophecy in your name and cast out demons in your name and do
- 25:12mighty works in your name and then I will declare to them I
- 25:17never knew you depart from me. Wait, isn't this a
- 25:21contradiction? Isn't there a bunch of
- 25:22scriptures that I just said all who call on the name of the Lord
- 25:25will be saved and now Jesus like no, all who call on the name of
- 25:30the Lord will be saved. But that word there, I never
- 25:36knew you knew The word new is gonosco.
- 25:39Gonosco is a marital intimacy word.
- 25:46It's not knowledge fully. It is a form of knowledge, but
- 25:52it's very it's biblical knowing. How's that trying to be kind
- 25:58children? So I want you to remember that
- 26:01point, Gonosco intimately involved with our God.
- 26:07It's so close where you are focused on each other, you're
- 26:14married to each other, you're intimate with each other.
- 26:19Like my eyes are on my wife because she's beautiful.
- 26:24But here's the thing guys, God thinks you are beautiful.
- 26:32Do you think he is? Because the God that I'm madly
- 26:40in love with, deeply in love with.
- 26:44Like yesterday I watched the sunset and all the colours and
- 26:49you have to think to yourself, if there are such a wide variety
- 26:54of colours and such a wide variety of spices and herbs and
- 26:58tastes and just so many like laughter, children's laughter,
- 27:04My gosh, if there are so many beautiful things in this world,
- 27:10then surely the Creator is far more beautiful.
- 27:22But how do you begin this journey of intimacy with God?
- 27:26Well, you have to have have him as your first hope.
- 27:31Hope your first focus and Jesus. When Jesus said I never knew
- 27:39you, what he was saying is I was not the focus of your affection
- 27:47was Jesus saying you. You didn't hope in me, You hoped
- 27:52and you had focus in what? Your own achievements?
- 27:56Because from the verse they're yelling out, you know, hey, we
- 27:59cast our demons in your name. We prophesied, we did mighty
- 28:03works in your name. It's like Jesus, like that was
- 28:05your focus. I wasn't your focus.
- 28:12Focused in your own achievements, focused in your
- 28:15own spirituality. Oh, what great things you did in
- 28:19my name. Good for you.
- 28:20But I was not your only hope. So I don't know you, and if
- 28:26you're not in an intimate relationship with Jesus,
- 28:31remember we're not perfect, but an intimate relationship with
- 28:35Jesus is. If he's not your first hope,
- 28:41then it means that we're intimate with other things
- 28:46because we're always intimate with something.
- 28:50It's actually by default, we're either married to Jesus or we're
- 28:55married to other things. Ever heard people say, oh,
- 28:59they're married to their career? Yeah, maybe they're married to
- 29:06their art or one of the ones I've heard often they're married
- 29:10to the 'cause it's so easy to be married to the cause, the
- 29:15casting out demons. They're doing wonderful,
- 29:17powerful things in his name. God's like, well, and that's why
- 29:24please understand this. And that's why Jesus said depart
- 29:28from me, get away from me. You know why?
- 29:31Because he doesn't break his own rules.
- 29:34Jesus is like, I don't commit adultery.
- 29:37You are married to something else.
- 29:41Does that make sense? Yeah.
- 29:44She's like, whoa, I don't fool around with someone else's
- 29:46spouse. You're already married to the
- 29:48'cause you're already married to your own spirituality.
- 29:51You're already married to your own career, You're married to
- 29:53the whole world. You're married to lots of stuff.
- 29:55I'm not touching you because I don't break my own rules.
- 30:02Here's the beautiful thing. And you can read about this all
- 30:06through Scripture. At any moment you can
- 30:10categorically stop having intimacy with the world and
- 30:15everything else by simply placing your hope in Jesus.
- 30:20How great is that? There is there is no big journey
- 30:23or story here. It's like a I'm changing my
- 30:26focus simple decision. And then then we have Cathros
- 30:34where it's Jesus who prunes you, then he purifies you.
- 30:40So I just encourage you, let let Jesus ignite that intimacy in
- 30:46your heart. And just like the song we sang
- 30:48this morning, I love how in tune our churches with Holy Spirit
- 30:51where it says I didn't even know this song was going to be
- 30:54played, which is Jesus. I belong to no one else.
- 30:58That were the words we sang this morning and I was like, that's
- 31:04the message for today. I belong to no one else.
- 31:09There's a quote, and I'll finish with this.
- 31:12There's a quote from CS Lewis, Beautiful quote.
- 31:16It says I believe in Christianity as I believe that
- 31:20the sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by
- 31:26it I see everything else.
