- 0:00Speaker 1: Well back here at one look up Alex Media. It
- 0:02Speaker 1: was a special night last night honoring John Sterling by
- 0:05Speaker 1: I again. I'm still processing my thoughts and i'll share
- 0:09Speaker 1: that with you as it's going to coincide with tomorrow's
- 0:13Speaker 1: anniversary of the memorial for my dad. I'll talk all
- 0:16Speaker 1: about the synchronicity, the connection, the feelings, and so that'll
- 0:21Speaker 1: come tomorrow. But it is interesting that John Sterling retired
- 0:24Speaker 1: a year after or announce his retirement a year after
- 0:28Speaker 1: my dad had passed, and that was there's some synchronousy
- 0:31Speaker 1: there that I want to cover and what my motivation
- 0:33Speaker 1: is moving forward. But you'll hear that tomorrow. Right now,
- 0:36Speaker 1: I want to get into part two of the redistricting
- 0:38Speaker 1: conversation because I mean to play this. It was ask
- 0:41Speaker 1: Frank anything on the Arthur I Della Power Hour on
- 0:43Speaker 1: Friday night and Councilman Frank Morano open up the phone lines,
- 0:46Speaker 1: open up people to ask questions. Well, here was mine.
- 0:49Speaker 1: The nerdy in me was like, well, what's up? What's redisseurting?
- 0:53Speaker 1: How will it help New York? Will it help New York?
- 0:55Speaker 1: And here's what the council members they answered.
- 0:56Speaker 2: What, Alex Garrett, your question, please sir, all right, redisteresting
- 0:59Speaker 2: been and the news a lot lately.
- 1:01Speaker 1: How does this redistricting talk affect New York City?
- 1:04Speaker 2: That is a great question, And you know, first for starters,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I am totally against any form of jerry mandering, whether
- 1:11Speaker 2: it's Republicans trying to do it in places like Texas
- 1:15Speaker 2: or Florida, or Democrats trying to do it in states
- 1:18Speaker 2: like California or Illinois. Totally against it. I think there
- 1:21Speaker 2: should be, you know, a constitutional amendment against it, which
- 1:26Speaker 2: leads us to New York State, where there is a
- 1:29Speaker 2: constitutional amendment against redistricting. And in spite of that, in
- 1:34Speaker 2: spite of the fact that there has to be an
- 1:36Speaker 2: independent redistricting commission that draws these lines that then has
- 1:40Speaker 2: to be approved by the state legislature, we have now
- 1:43Speaker 2: seen for the last two elections the Democrats try to
- 1:48Speaker 2: redraw the lone Republican congressional district in this city. Infact,
- 1:52Speaker 2: the last time I was fortunate enough to host this show,
- 1:55Speaker 2: I talked with my congresswoman Nicole Mallia talkas about that,
- 1:58Speaker 2: and she won in court they said that her district
- 2:01Speaker 2: should be redrawn. And basically in New York they've tried
- 2:06Speaker 2: to do this several times, and unlike left wing efforts
- 2:10Speaker 2: in California, and right wing efforts and Virginia most recently,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and right wing efforts in places like Texas, they have
- 2:17Speaker 2: been unable to do so in New York. So New
- 2:21Speaker 2: York because in part the redistricting laws that were passed
- 2:25Speaker 2: by the voters around twenty ten to twenty eleven, and
- 2:28Speaker 2: in part just because there's so many Democrats everywhere and
- 2:31Speaker 2: are the few Republicans that are still around have to
- 2:34Speaker 2: go somewhere. It has they've been able to gerrymander the
- 2:39Speaker 2: Assembly and the State Senate. By the way, Republicans when
- 2:41Speaker 2: they were in charge of the State Senate they did
- 2:43Speaker 2: the same thing. They made sure that a lot of
- 2:46Speaker 2: the Republican Senate districts when they were in the majority,
- 2:48Speaker 2: remained Republican Senate districts. But in New York they've tried
- 2:52Speaker 2: to do it and they've been unsuccessful because of both
- 2:55Speaker 2: the federal courts and the state courts.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Are those to the judges on that one, right.
- 2:58Speaker 2: No doubt, Absolutely, what a good point.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Absolutely that entire hour you can check in and of
- 3:03Speaker 1: course always listen to Arthur Idalla and the six pm
- 3:07Speaker 1: Arthur Idella Power Hour on AM nine seven The Answer
- 3:10Speaker 1: Always proud to be part of that show, and then
- 3:13Speaker 1: play clips of it on my own podcast at one
- 3:15Speaker 1: Lego alex Media. Part three of redistricting coming up next
