- 0:08Speaker 2: Talking Cornhusker football, basketball, and everything Nebraska sports. Welcome to
- 0:14Speaker 2: the Return to Glory Podcast!
- 0:27Speaker 1: Return to Glory Podcast. Husker Nation. This is your Indiana
- 0:33Speaker 1: week orientation. If you came to look for permission to
- 0:39Speaker 1: be excited for this week, that permission is granted. If
- 0:44Speaker 1: you came to look for a guaranteed win, we don't
- 0:47Speaker 1: have that yet. But what we do have is a
- 0:49Speaker 1: football team that has earned the right to play a
- 0:52Speaker 1: meaningful game at home with a whole lot of people
- 0:57Speaker 1: who have been waiting to feel like this again and
- 1:00Speaker 1: find a way To get this win. Welcome back to
- 1:03Speaker 1: Return to Glory. Hunter Zabernicki here. Today's not going to
- 1:07Speaker 1: be a scouting report. That'll be later on Thursday. Today's
- 1:11Speaker 1: going to be about us as a program. Our minds,
- 1:14Speaker 1: our preparation. What we do in the week finally feels
- 1:18Speaker 1: big enough to match how much we care about Nebraska football.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Last Tuesday I talked about the different lenses around a program. Fans, coaches, players. media.
- 1:34Speaker 1: This week, all of these lenses meet at the same
- 1:38Speaker 1: moment on Saturday, 11 o'clock in the morning, Memorial Stadium, Indiana.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Everybody's going to have a different job, but we're all
- 1:47Speaker 1: working towards the same goal, the same opportunity. And I
- 1:51Speaker 1: want to be clear about this word opportunity. It doesn't
- 1:54Speaker 1: mean destiny. It doesn't mean a national title. It does
- 1:58Speaker 1: not mean Indiana is is supposed to lose because we
- 2:01Speaker 1: all think that we're supposed to win. It means we
- 2:04Speaker 1: finally have a chance, another chance, to contribute to something
- 2:09Speaker 1: that we've been after for quite a while here as
- 2:13Speaker 1: Husker Nation and then go out and let the players
- 2:15Speaker 1: compete and let the final score dictate the outcome. So
- 2:19Speaker 1: here's the mission for everybody this week. Outwork Indiana in
- 2:26Speaker 1: every possible way that we can control. No, we can't
- 2:30Speaker 1: go to their practice and run it. We can't control
- 2:34Speaker 1: how they prep, but we can control how we get
- 2:39Speaker 1: ready for this week. So, if you're already yelling at
- 2:44Speaker 1: your phone, watching videos, good. But make sure you save
- 2:48Speaker 1: a little for Saturday. If you are staring at the
- 2:51Speaker 1: schedule trying to decide whether it's emotionally safe to believe
- 2:56Speaker 1: after this 5-0 start, well, stay with me You don't
- 3:01Speaker 1: have to predict the ending to show up fully for
- 3:03Speaker 1: what we're after here this Saturday. The first assignment for us,
- 3:10Speaker 1: get your mind right. Don't spend the week auditioning for disappointment. Yes,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I know the habit. We have a good drive and
- 3:22Speaker 1: then someone says, just wait, here comes the blunders. Maybe
- 3:28Speaker 1: we get a lead. And everybody just starts assuming that
- 3:31Speaker 1: it could disappear. Or let's flip it. Indiana scores a touchdown.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Indiana gets an early lead like Maryland last week. And
- 3:40Speaker 1: then there becomes the silence of the crowd and the disappointment.
- 3:45Speaker 1: And here we go again. Can't win a big game.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Let's not let that happen, Husker Nation. The past over
- 3:56Speaker 1: the last however many years, no matter how old you are,
- 3:59Speaker 1: explains why we care. We've been around. We've stuck with
- 4:02Speaker 1: it through the thin and thin, and this game needs everybody. Now,
- 4:07Speaker 1: being mentally ready doesn't mean Indiana's not good. They're obviously good.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You have to respect what they do. It's part of preparation.
- 4:16Speaker 1: We know what they've completed. They're on the longest winning
- 4:19Speaker 1: streak here in college football and coming off a national title.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Our confidence should sound like this. They're good, but what
- 4:27Speaker 1: we've done so far, we've earned our place so far
- 4:30Speaker 1: in this game and in this season, and we're going
- 4:32Speaker 1: to make them earn everything that they get. Our confidence
- 4:36Speaker 1: and our passion should not disappear the first time they
- 4:39Speaker 1: make a big play. I'll repeat that. The first time
- 4:42Speaker 1: they make a big play, don't let it fade. Here's
- 4:46Speaker 1: the test for our crowd. If Indiana does score first
- 4:49Speaker 1: or we drop a pass or we have an interception,
- 4:52Speaker 1: what do we do next? If the stadium goes quiet,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and let me tell you, it did on Saturday against Maryland,
- 4:59Speaker 1: we made the moment harder for us. If we immediately
- 5:01Speaker 1: turn on a player, start bashing officials, it's not going
- 5:05Speaker 1: to help us. Make the next snap louder. Quiet on offense.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Let the offense hear. But let's make sure that we
- 5:15Speaker 1: are there and ready to go Saturday. For the game.
- 5:18Speaker 1: This week. Be the person who brings people into the moment.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Bring people together. Text a friend who usually stays home.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Get them to the game. Encourage the kid. The middle
- 5:29Speaker 1: school kids that are sitting next to me last week.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Why Saturdays matter. Have a conversation with them. Tell them
- 5:35Speaker 1: how big of a moment this is. Tell the nervous
- 5:38Speaker 1: old Arnie sitting next to you. That hey. Stand up.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Grab him by the chin if you have to. And
- 5:44Speaker 1: pull him up. We're going to do this thing. We
- 5:49Speaker 1: can be serious without being miserable. We can believe without
- 5:51Speaker 1: demanding perfection. That's the mindset we have to have in
- 5:54Speaker 1: Memorial Stadium. So, go through quickly these different lenses again.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Let's talk about everybody around the program. Players, as you
- 6:04Speaker 1: get through preparation, trust the work and the mission that
- 6:09Speaker 1: your coaching staff is putting you on. Know the assignment.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Know the call. Know the adjustment. Finish every play to
- 6:14Speaker 1: the whistle. Take care of what you need to do
- 6:18Speaker 1: this week to recover and have your body in full
- 6:20Speaker 1: shape ready to go for Saturday. Compete harder every play
- 6:24Speaker 1: than Indiana. The best version of effort is aimed at
- 6:29Speaker 1: doing your job right. And as those get pieced together
- 6:32Speaker 1: as a whole, we're going to like where we sit. Coaches,
- 6:37Speaker 1: give the guys the answers they need to carry through
- 6:40Speaker 1: all of the outside noise and the pressure going into
- 6:43Speaker 1: this game. Prepare, prepare, prepare. This whole week. Be ready
- 6:48Speaker 1: for the big moments. Be ready for the next call.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Be ready to adjust. Be ready to tweak. Signetti's going
- 6:53Speaker 1: to do that stuff. Out-coach Kurt Signetti. You can do it. Fans.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Can't say it enough. Get there early. Get there loud.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And don't stop. Make everything that Indiana does as difficult
- 7:08Speaker 1: as possible. Stay engaged the entire game. There's always this awkward,
- 7:15Speaker 1: long moment, and it's 11 a.m. kick. I get it.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Find a way to get through the entire three to
- 7:21Speaker 1: four hours. It's our job. Media, do your homework. Ask
- 7:28Speaker 1: the questions. Make sure that everything is locked in, ready
- 7:32Speaker 1: to go for this week. Your part, I really don't
- 7:34Speaker 1: think matters that much, but after the game, it's more
- 7:37Speaker 1: season long. But this week's huge. Don't throw anything out
- 7:42Speaker 1: there that doesn't need to be there. Families and friends
- 7:48Speaker 1: of the players keep making the week normal for the kids.
- 7:54Speaker 1: It doesn't need to have 40 extra messages about he's
- 7:59Speaker 1: the biggest game in the program's last 10 years or whatever.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Don't make it an extra big week. Let him trust
- 8:07Speaker 1: what his preparation and his coaches are having to do
- 8:10Speaker 1: and believe. So, Yes, I'm not assigning a loss to
- 8:17Speaker 1: a fan who can't be there. All the other things
- 8:20Speaker 1: in life are real, but contribute what you can. Big week.
- 8:26Speaker 1: We got to put all of our eggs in one basket.
- 8:28Speaker 1: A full program effort means everybody gives their role. They
- 8:31Speaker 1: actually have to be 1% better than Indiana this week.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It doesn't mean everybody has equal control. Obviously, the players
- 8:40Speaker 1: are the ones playing the game. The coaches are the
- 8:42Speaker 1: one coaching the game. The fans are the ones cheering
- 8:45Speaker 1: on the players and the coaches. But we can all
- 8:48Speaker 1: do our part to find a way to beat Indiana
- 8:52Speaker 1: on Saturday. All right, now that that real talk's over,
- 8:57Speaker 1: now we have a little bit of fun here. The
- 9:02Speaker 1: physical preparation, and Arnie, I'm talking to you here mainly.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Get that goalpost blueprint ready. Because if things go and
- 9:12Speaker 1: everybody does their part, And we end up ahead when
- 9:18Speaker 1: the clock strikes zero. That goal post is coming down, baby.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Saturday's 11 o'clock, kickoff 11. That means when you're trying
- 9:27Speaker 1: to figure out what time you're starting on Saturday morning,
- 9:33Speaker 1: plan a 30-minute earlier, plan an hour earlier. Get here sooner.
- 9:38Speaker 1: It's the biggest game of the year so far. Find
- 9:41Speaker 1: a way to get something to eat. Drink some water. Arnie,
- 9:43Speaker 1: drink a lot of water. Get that siren ready. Be
- 9:47Speaker 1: ready to go. And don't spend every ounce of your
- 9:52Speaker 1: voice in an argument on Tuesday about what we're going
- 9:56Speaker 1: to do against Dylan Raiola in Eugene next week. No,
- 9:59Speaker 1: save it for Saturday. And yes, the goalposts, I mentioned that,
- 10:04Speaker 1: the joke, the dream. Arnie is going to be the
- 10:08Speaker 1: director of postgame infrastructure. He's going to figure out, he's
- 10:12Speaker 1: already sent me some of the blueprints, how that thing
- 10:15Speaker 1: goes down. I don't know. He's going to find a way, though.
- 10:17Speaker 1: That's his job for the week. Lastly, I want to
- 10:28Speaker 1: go back to the most important part of the preparation.
- 10:34Speaker 1: It's one that we cannot script, but it's staying into
- 10:39Speaker 1: the game no matter the moment. And I keep repeating it,
- 10:43Speaker 1: doing your job. There's going to be a stretch where
- 10:48Speaker 1: the offense is stuck. It's Indiana. They're good. There's going
- 10:51Speaker 1: to be some missed throws. There's going to be some
- 10:54Speaker 1: missed tackles. I'll go back to the word catastrophic. Keep
- 10:58Speaker 1: the catastrophic plays out of the game for Nebraska. There's
- 11:03Speaker 1: probably going to be calls that nobody likes. Maybe the
- 11:06Speaker 1: officiating from last week is going to get us some calls.
- 11:09Speaker 1: We hope so. But it's our job as fans to
- 11:13Speaker 1: stay in the moment every play, every snap to make
- 11:20Speaker 1: sure that we do what we can to get Nebraska
- 11:24Speaker 1: this win on Saturday. And if you're watching at home,
- 11:28Speaker 1: you have a job too. Make the room fun. Enjoy it.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Make the atmosphere great. Find a way to bring someone
- 11:36Speaker 1: that maybe who hasn't cared in a while and give
- 11:39Speaker 1: them a reason to care. This is a great week
- 11:42Speaker 1: to show that there's hope. And if we win, you're
- 11:46Speaker 1: not going to regret it. If we lose, well, we've
- 11:48Speaker 1: kind of been used to that in the past. So
- 11:51Speaker 1: find a way to make this be a great week
- 11:55Speaker 1: for Husker football. And here's our week. Today is Tuesday, right?
- 12:04Speaker 1: We've outlined, we've moved on from Maryland. Today we're making
- 12:08Speaker 1: the plan what we have to do. Wednesday, let Dak
- 12:12Speaker 1: handle whatever strange motivational thing he thinks he's going to
- 12:15Speaker 1: do tomorrow. Thursday, Austin, Dak and I will get more
- 12:20Speaker 1: on the details of Indiana. We'll have some film watching
- 12:22Speaker 1: done Wednesday night. We'll be ready to go. Friday, get
- 12:27Speaker 1: some rest. And then Saturday, get up and be ready
- 12:30Speaker 1: to go. And this is what I mean when I
- 12:33Speaker 1: say we have to outwork Indiana in every aspect. We
- 12:35Speaker 1: don't know what they're doing. We can't control it, but
- 12:38Speaker 1: we can make sure that we're doing a little bit
- 12:41Speaker 1: more than they are. We have spent years asking for
- 12:45Speaker 1: a game like this to win a game like this.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Now we have one in front of us. Let's not
- 12:52Speaker 1: pretend that, oh, will we be able to do this?
- 12:57Speaker 1: Let's Be excited. We're allowed to be excited. We're allowed
- 12:59Speaker 1: to care. We're allowed to make this a great week
- 13:03Speaker 1: without making one result the measure of everybody's worth. We're
- 13:06Speaker 1: allowed to be nervous. If you're nervous, that means you care.
- 13:11Speaker 1: But let's find a way to get the job done Saturday. Arnie,
- 13:15Speaker 1: check the siren. Austin, get some good numbers for Thursday. Dak,
- 13:21Speaker 1: check whatever it is that you check. I don't know
- 13:23Speaker 1: what that is, but check it. And Husker Nation, check
- 13:29Speaker 1: your plans and bring your best. Celebrate the progress we've
- 13:32Speaker 1: made so far, but prepare for the standard. Earn that
- 13:37Speaker 1: next moment. Everybody has a job. Go Big Red.
- 13:45Speaker 2: The headlines change, but the mission stays From Memorial Stadium
- 13:49Speaker 2: to PBA days Football Saturdays, basketball.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Nights Every story chasing red and.
- 13:55Speaker 2: White Recruiting buzz, big time commits Camp battles, coaching hits
- 14:00Speaker 2: Transfer moves and rising stars The road to glory's never
- 14:05Speaker 2: far This is Return to Glory, where every headline tells
- 14:10Speaker 2: a story. Big Red pride every season. Husker Nation's got
- 14:15Speaker 2: a reason. From touchdowns, dunks, and championship dreams, we'll be
- 14:21Speaker 2: back with the latest from every team.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Until next time, keep the.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Faith, keep believing, because the Return to Glory is just beginning.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Go Big Red!
- 14:33Speaker 2: See you next episode!
