- 0:46to be talking about Spacex's HLS mission to the moon, NASA's
- 0:52Orion spacecraft, and how things may completely change for the
- 0:58Artemis missions going forward. Now, originally, NASA wanted
- 1:03SpaceX to launch the lunar HLS Starship to moon orbit, where it
- 1:09would dock with the Orion spacecraft and the HLS ship
- 1:14would take the astronauts down to the surface of the moon.
- 1:19Now, something drastic may be changing in the near future.
- 1:25There's been murmurings that behind closed doors, NASA is
- 1:29discussing a low Earth orbit transfer of astronauts between
- 1:34the Orion spacecraft and the Starship HLS.
- 1:39Now, these are unconfirmed right now.
- 1:42They haven't released anything about this yet.
- 1:44But Ars Technica posted an article about it.
- 1:48And Eric Berger is very reputable and he was the one
- 1:51that posted this article. What may be happening with the
- 1:54Starship in the Orion? So let's just wind it in a
- 1:57little bit because we have to understand what the process is
- 2:02of getting the HLS Starship to the moon first.
- 2:05OK? So first they have to launch a
- 2:07fuel depot or a fuel fuel, a few fuel depots for the actual
- 2:13Starship to fuel up in low Earth orbit before it gets to the
- 2:18moon, before it launches to the moon.
- 2:20In NASA, it said somewhere around 10:00-ish.
- 2:24In SpaceX, Elon Musk said somewhere around 10 to 15.
- 2:29So we're going to go on the low side.
- 2:30We're going to say about 10 depots will be launched to low
- 2:33Earth orbit, where the HLS Starship will dock with them and
- 2:37fuel up before it goes to the moon.
- 2:40Then the HLS will be fueled up and possibly in between the fuel
- 2:45and going to the moon. Like that step right there.
- 2:48Astronauts will fly on an SLS rocket to low Earth orbit and
- 2:55then dock with the Starship. Now, we're not sure if this is
- 2:59even feasible right now. We know that this is going to be
- 3:03a thing in the future, but there are some caveats to this that
- 3:08could make this a more impressive mission and also
- 3:11could save NASA billions of dollars in the future.
- 3:15You're asking yourself, why do they need the SLS rocket if it's
- 3:18not going all the way to the moon?
- 3:20That's what I'm asking myself too.
- 3:23If the Orion capsule could be retrofitted to be on top of a
- 3:27Starship or on top of a Dragon or Falcon 9 instead of a Dragon
- 3:32capsule. That's a possibility.
- 3:35But you're also probably thinking, why don't they just
- 3:36use a Dragon capsule and dock that with a Starship?
- 3:41Because Dragon capsules already go to low Earth orbit and they
- 3:45can dock with the International Space Station.
- 3:48So that seems like the logical next step, right?
- 3:52Not quite yet. So there will be a possible
- 3:57mission with the Orion spacecraft and the HLS Starship?
- 4:02Because they need to test this out to see if the Orion can
- 4:06actually dock with the Starship while in space.
- 4:09Because that's what they're gonna be doing in the Moon's
- 4:11orbit. And the Dragon capsule cannot go
- 4:15to the moon and dock with the Starship and come back to Earth.
- 4:19It just isn't feasible. It doesn't work like that.
- 4:21The physics don't work. The Dragon capsule is not built
- 4:24for that. So they need to use the Orion
- 4:27capsule or some other capsule that could be created in the
- 4:29future for docking with the Starship and then coming back to
- 4:33Earth. So once the astronauts are on
- 4:37board the Starship, then three or more astronauts would fly
- 4:42their way to the Moon's orbit, where they would land on the
- 4:45Moon's surface. And then when they're done with
- 4:47their science and experimentation on a lunar
- 4:49surface, they would fly back up and dock with the Orion capsule
- 4:55or the moon station, transfer the astronauts again, and then
- 5:00from the Orion they would come back down to Earth.
- 5:03The HLS rocket would stay either in the lunar orbit or docked
- 5:07with the moon station until the next mission and possibly just
- 5:12land on the moon and wait for another HLS rocket to come up
- 5:16because there's a limited shelf life for these things while
- 5:19they're in space and orbiting in the moon.
- 5:21So could land it on the moon and it could become a habitat for
- 5:25future astronauts. Now, the good thing about going
- 5:28to the moon in the HLS is that you're not cramped like the
- 5:32Orion spacecraft. The Orion spacecraft, even
- 5:36though it is a modern marvel of engineering, there's not a lot
- 5:40of room. You can't really move around a
- 5:42lot. You can't really do much and you
- 5:45can't really stretch a lot. There's no there's no room for
- 5:49activities there with the HLS Starship.
- 5:53It's 9 meters around, 30 feet around.
- 5:55It's a massive ship. And if they can construct this
- 5:58so the astronauts could just fly all the way to the moon on the
- 6:01HLS rocket, seems like it's totally doable, then they could
- 6:07land the Starship with the astronauts on board and it would
- 6:10be a much better experience for the astronauts.
- 6:14They could have more experimentation time because the
- 6:17HLS rocket could have more room for experiments and it's a low
- 6:20Earth orbit experimentation while they're waiting.
- 6:23Or they could do experimentation all the way to the moon and
- 6:27while they get to the moon, while they orbit the moon and
- 6:30when they land on the moon. So the experimentation time and
- 6:34the experimentation mass of experimentation could be much
- 6:38bigger than just going in the Orion space capsule.
- 6:42Because it seems, I don't know, it seems like this is a win win.
- 6:45We've been talking about this for a long time.
- 6:46I know a lot of space reporters were like, why do we need Orion
- 6:50when Starship's going to low Earth orbit anyway and they're
- 6:54going to dock with Starship and then go didn't make a lot of
- 6:57sense. So we've been talking about this
- 6:58for a long time. But since there's murmurings
- 7:00within NASA now about this happening, it's this totally a
- 7:04possibility. They're going to need to launch
- 7:06a few SLS, few more SLS rockets before they change completely
- 7:10over to the Starship because Starship can do everything that
- 7:14SLS can and possibly even more. It's, it looks like a bright
- 7:19future for HLS Starship. Now the first mission that these
- 7:24astronauts may do, because they can't go into the Starship
- 7:29immediately then fly to the moon.
- 7:30This they need to test this thing out.
- 7:33So the Polaris program was going to test a docking from a Dragon
- 7:40into a Starship and do some low Earth orbit experimentation and
- 7:44check out to see if the Starship is feasible for low Earth orbit
- 7:48or moon travel. And that was going to be the
- 7:51initial docking and testing phase.
- 7:54So there's a possibility that the Orion could, or maybe even a
- 8:00Dragon could do this dock with the HLS. 2 astronauts would
- 8:05transfer into the HLS Starship, while two others would stay
- 8:10inside the Dragon capsule and do testing from there.
- 8:14From a distance. They could do maneuvering, they
- 8:16could do some burns, they could do orientations, they could
- 8:20possibly even do an Eva, which doesn't make a lot of sense from
- 8:24a Starship standpoint, but it might be something they do in
- 8:27the future just for testing. Then they could redock with the
- 8:31Dragon capsule and then come back down to Earth.
- 8:33So they have to test the Starship out before they get it
- 8:36to the moon. So the HLS Starship is that
- 8:41might be the first Test of this series of tests.
- 8:44Then that HLS Starship could fly to the moon and do a test
- 8:48landing on the lunar surface just to make sure that there's
- 8:52no astronauts on board in case something bad happens.
- 8:56So let me know down the commas below what you think about this
- 8:59'cause it seems like a logical step forward.
- 9:02Like why would they even use the Orion capsule in low Earth orbit
- 9:05to test this when they have a Dragon capsule?
- 9:09Or they do need the Orion capsule to go to the moon and
- 9:11come back down to earth. So I can totally get that.
- 9:13I totally get that part. But everything else seems very
- 9:17logical. Dock in Earth orbit and make
- 9:20sure that everything's OK with the Starship and command a
- 9:23gigantic spaceship between the Earth and the moon.
- 9:27That sounds like a no brainer to me. 150 to 200 feet long
- 9:32Starship. It's a massive ship, can do all
- 9:36sorts of sciencing all sorts of engineering on your way to the
- 9:39moon and in low Earth orbit while you wait and then head to
- 9:42the moon. Sounds sounds great to me.

- 9:48Now, does this make the SLS rocket unsustainable for the
- 9:53billions and billions of dollars per launch that it costs?
- 9:56I think it does. I think it does because if the
- 9:59Orion spacecraft only has to go to low Earth orbit, they can
- 10:02launch it from another rocket. Whether it's a ULA rocket, what
- 10:06it whatever, it could be a star or it could be another SpaceX
- 10:09rocket, who knows. I'm not sure exactly what the
- 10:11configuration would be, but the SLS rocket is a jobs program.
- 10:15It makes America a bunch of money.
- 10:19And these people are spread across the whole nation making
- 10:24and designing, building, engineering, all of these parts
- 10:26to build this massive SLS rocket.
- 10:29So the SLS rocket is a jobs program as well.
- 10:33So they would lose tax money and they would lose funding if they
- 10:37get rid of the SLS rocket. So I don't think they're going
- 10:39to get rid of the SLS rocket. They may use it for deep space
- 10:42exploration or something like that in the future and just
- 10:46shift over to Starship and SpaceX for the time being for
- 10:49the moon launches. And maybe SLS will be more Mars
- 10:53and further out into the solar system in the future.
- 10:56But we know that Starship will be capable in the future of
- 10:59going to Mars as well. So there's really no reason to
- 11:03use SLS anymore if this is true, other than super far out like
- 11:11science missions. It's a massive rocket and
- 11:13Starship can do everything the SLS can do and then more.
- 11:16So I think this might be the end of the SLS program.
- 11:20This might be the beginning of the end of the SLS program.
