- 3:38City in the summer of eighteen forty two. It was still an unsolved crime
- 3:44in November when The Mystery of Marie Rogett was published the author Edgar Allan Poe.
- 3:52It paralleled in every essential detail the murder of Mary Rogers. Poe wrote
- 3:57it far from the scene of the atrocity, with only the newspaper reports of
- 4:00the day. Nevertheless, the subsequent confession connected with the murder of Mary Rogers
- 4:06confirmed not only the killer named by Poe, but all the chief details by
- 4:12which he arrived at his identification and now Autolite presents transcribed Edgar Allan Poe's Mystery
- 4:20of Marie Rogett, starring mister Cornell Wilde. Hoping once again to keep you
- 4:26in suspense, Good evening, my name is Dupin. I should like to
- 4:39extend an invitation regard, first a certain event which truly occurred in New York
- 4:46City on a warm summer night in eighteen forty two. Secondly, I invite
- 4:51you to employ your imagination and displaced that same event intact with all of the
- 4:57essential facts, to a cobbled old world Paris on an identical, warm and
- 5:02fragrant summer night in the same year. Lastly, and most interesting, I
- 5:08should like to invite you to attend that event. It is a murder.
- 5:17Yes, the general design and mental character of the atrocity, Indeed, the
- 5:38first knowledge of its occurrence came to my attention on Wednesday night, the twenty
- 5:43fifth day of June. Who is the prefector of police, I am monsieur,
- 5:56Yes, monsieur, Oh, thank you for coming, Monsieur. I
- 5:59wasn't certain messenger would find you this way, Monsieur. Please Andrea, Andrea
- 6:09the lantern from Monsieur dupart m hm. She died harshly, yes, beaten,
- 6:16choked brown, Yes, yes, quite harshly. She was beautiful,
- 6:21monsieur once perhaps still mademoiselle. What in life she had a name? In
- 6:30death, she must also have a name any of you, I have asked,
- 6:32Monsieur, but none of them know her. But her clothes and jewels
- 6:36say she was known Dupan. Good clothes, torn and disordered in her terrible
- 6:41struggle, but good. And the jewelry not expensive, but tasteful. This
- 6:46woman, in my opinion, Dupint, was known and loved Monsieur the Prefect,
- 6:50no doubt, Dupan, this is why I sent for you. I've
- 6:57been through these things before. The newspapers will write stories, the reporters will
- 7:01make conjecture. Although there is no name for her now, there will eventually
- 7:05be a name, and then Monsieur I will be called upon to produce her
- 7:10assassins. There is so little to go on. The eyes of the public
- 7:13will be upon me, and my honor is at stake, and my honor
- 7:16to Monsieur. If I am involved in the investigation. Listen. There is
- 7:23a fund at the prefecture, a sizeable fund which I am authorized to use
- 7:27when circumstances arise, and for your services, I am willing to make a
- 7:31direct and liberal proposition. You will help me find the answer to this woman's
- 7:40death. I cannot refuse no form about the mouth. As in the case
- 7:55of the merely drown monsieur here bruisers, impressions of fingers. It was a
- 8:03sangulation by hand and by discord. Yes, doctor, yes, jufa an
- 8:13ingenious not in that cord. Don't you think this is a slip knot a
- 8:18sailor's knot sailors? She is found in water? Why did she die?
- 8:26M for her beauty, perhaps for her love her hate. It was Sunday,
- 8:33observed doctor. There are no marks to prove she was waited and then
- 8:37shaken loose. Yes, she quit life on Sunday, murdered in the dark,
- 8:43thrown into the river, unwaited. Monday Tuesday she remained as a corpse
- 8:50will on the bottom. And then on the third day, tonight, as
- 8:52a corpse will, she rose and the fishermen saw her. It is the
- 8:56way of corpses violently made. So it's only violent, but quick near the
- 9:01river bank somewhere. For what assassins could carry a burden like this, long
- 9:07undiscovered from a dark bridge for her? No, no, too much light
- 9:11in people. There had to be a boat, doctor. If she was
- 9:15dropped from a bridge or pushed in from the shore, the current might press
- 9:18her aside to be caught in the vegetation of the shallow water. She was
- 9:22murdered on the bank and then taken out to her grave in a boat.
- 9:26And there had to be a man who knew how to handle a boat in
- 9:28the tricky current? Is there is I the prefect? I had someone who
- 9:35thinks she may know her. Hmm. Come in, monsieur, with your
- 9:45permission, doctor, monsieur upa misieuve? How do you do? Ze?
- 9:50Beauvet has been searching since Monday for news of a Marie Roge. Madmoiselle Roge
- 9:54is an employee of Monsieur Bove correct. Monsieur correct, amataful ma. I
- 10:00called on her mother, Madame Rose Monday when Mary did not appear at my
- 10:03shop. Madame informed me that Mary had left Sunday morning to visit her aunt
- 10:05at the Rue des Drone. She has not yet returned I see, and
- 10:09what else I cannot say, Monsieur. So far I have ascertained that she
- 10:13never arrived at Rue des Drone, and indeed no one has seen her since
- 10:16Sunday. Can you describe Marrie Roget? But of course dark hair almost black,
- 10:22a dark eyes, tall, young, vibrant, a woman Monsieur of
- 10:26great promise. Jacques Santustache, the last to see her, mention to me
- 10:30that Ma'amselle wore a frock of fine muslin, deep blue. I knew it
- 10:33well, a bonnet. The match goes with it well. Who is Jacques
- 10:37Saintostache, bois monsieur Santustache is the accepted tutor of Mary Roget. He lodges
- 10:43and takes meals at the pancion kept by Madame Roge. He was to have
- 10:46gone for his betrothed at dusk Sunday and to have escorted her home in the
- 10:50afternoon. It rained heavily, and supposing that she would remain at her aunt's,
- 10:54he did not think it necessary to keep his promise. She has stayed
- 10:58there under similar circumstances. And where is Jacques Saintroustache at this moment? Searching
- 11:03and anxious as I am for Mary Roget. It is three days since Sunday,
- 11:07four days really, but three that Mary Roget has been considered missing.
- 11:11Your search is tardy. I I know she well, I am at your
- 11:16mercy. She has disappeared twice ah, and the first time she disappeared was
- 11:22about three years ago. Her mother her friends were unable to account for her
- 11:26disappearance. I was distracted with anxiety and terror. Did you notify the police
- 11:31in that case? Immediately, monsieur? But suddenly Mary reappeared one fine morning
- 11:37after being absent a week. She was in good health and held with somewhat
- 11:41assaddened air, as she explained she had spent the missing week with her relative
- 11:45in the country. Madame Roge, who was and still is infirm, recalled
- 11:50this to be a fact, and the matter was forgotten until now. So
- 11:52you did not call the police this second time she disappeared. What has happened
- 11:58once can happen again? What did happen that where she was away? I
- 12:01do not know. I do not honestly know. But you doubt the story
- 12:05of visiting a relative. I will not say, show him what we have,
- 12:09doctor, if you will kindly step oway here? Do you know this
- 12:20woman? Mouse? It is? Why does boube cry dufan? The girl
- 12:37only worked for him? Ah, he has not told us all. He
- 12:41is suspect dupar and I will have a word with him, say, dupa,
- 12:46why does he weep for a shop girl a grisette to his promise to
- 12:50another? He weeps for youth and beauty? Yes, I am dupin,
- 13:11Madame Rose. May I come in, come, come, No, no,
- 13:18please sit, Madame. I understand you are not well. M I
- 13:24have been invalid ten years now. I will not consume a great deal of
- 13:28time. May I ask, did your daughter often visit relatives in other distant
- 13:35parts of the city often and stay overnight? Often with your approval? Madame?
- 13:43She was and has been free of me since her sixteenth years. That
- 13:48is a very frank answer, Madame. I can tell you nothing of what
- 13:54has happened to her. She leaves me on a morning with no enemies I
- 13:58know. And do you know of her friends? I understand the intention of
- 14:05your remark. Do you refer to those beside Jacques? No, I know
- 14:13of none. I understand that Jacques Santastache keep's rooms here, that is true,
- 14:18yes, but he is no longer here. He left once he was
- 14:22informed of Marie's death where I do not know, but surely understood that we
- 14:28would be by to question him. He was beside himself with grief. I
- 14:35cannot blame him. I see. Oh, I have been of no assistance
- 14:41where I would like to be. And yet I knew something that morning.
- 14:48I knew she would not come back to her mama again. You knew she
- 14:56would not be back, madame? Did she take clothes? It's been a
- 15:00longer goodbye? How did you know? I knew? If I knew,
- 15:05Monsieur, death was very close to her that day. If you knew this,
- 15:11madam, why did you allow her to venture out? I stop her?
- 15:18No. No, If it is not mess, death will arrange a
- 15:24meeting. If the meeting had been here, death might have visited me too.
- 15:31And I am yet afraid to die. Auto Light is bringing you,
- 15:54mister Cornell Wild and Edgar Allan Poe's The Mystery of Marie broget Tonight's present in
- 16:00Radio's outstanding Theater of Frills Suspense. I got him Hurrow an Indian shriff.

- 16:44you couldn't buy a better battery with a pocket full of nuggets. So friends,
- 16:48see you're expert auto light battery dealer for an autolite stafol, the battery

- 17:10from Bomber to tail life, you're always right with auto LIGHTE. And
- 17:15now Auto Life brings back to our Hollywood soundstage, mister Cornell Wilde in Elliot
- 17:19Lewis's production of Edgar Allan Poe's The Mystery of Marie Roget a tale well calculated
- 17:26to keep you in suspense. Dupe again, you will recall the event we
- 17:40have been attending in her. I invite you now to keep in mind the
- 17:45sullen fact that Marie Orgie died violently, that her lover, Jacques Santustache is
- 17:52missing where she died. Who administered her death for what reason remained to be
- 18:00known. Attend at this point another event, if you will, which was
- 18:07arranged by that zealous and righteous man, the Prefect of Police. Thank you
- 18:14for coming, Dupan. You have located the lover Santo Stache. Santustache,
- 18:18No, he is unimportant, I assure you. Somewhere right now, he
- 18:25drinks and tries to forget you. But what I have here is important,
- 18:30most important. Madame du Lac, if you please, good evening, gentlemen,
- 18:37Good evening. This is Madame du Lax. She has something of interest
- 18:40to tell you, and I have something of interest to show you. Good
- 18:45evening, Madame. I have maintained this happened many years right here, close
- 18:51to the bank of the river. Oh no, no, no fear with
- 18:53me, Madame. I have no authority to do anything but respect your person
- 18:57and your thoughts. And what is this information? I saw a young woman
- 19:03here Sunday, monsieur said it was Mary Rose. It was definitely just a
- 19:07moment Sunday, madam. Yes, mid afternoon later, perhaps well, right
- 19:15here in my tavern. She arrived, accompanied by a young man of dark,
- 19:18swathy complexion. The two remained here for some time on their departure.
- 19:23They took the road through some thick woods that way toward the river Dupa.
- 19:27And this is a secluded neighborhood. Go on, madam, go on.
- 19:33Soon after they left, a gang of miss Crean's made their appearance at my
- 19:37place of business. They behaved boisterously. They ate and drank without payment,
- 19:42then left and followed the root of the young girl and the young man that
- 19:47same way. I see about dusk the same gang reappeared and we crossed the
- 19:52river in great east. I see, and you are certain it was Marie
- 19:56Rose. Never fear my men spoke with an unknotous driver, a man named
- 20:02Valence, who knew Marie Bouche. He claims he saw across the Seine on
- 20:07the Sunday afternoon in question with the swarthy man who fits the exact description,
- 20:11madam, and what else, monsieur, oh, I will show you come.
- 20:26I followed him through the back of the tavern into the thick woods which
- 20:30line the Seine. At that point. He stopped when we had come to
- 20:33a close thicket, within which were three or four large stones, forming a
- 20:38kind of seat with a back and footstool. Note dupart a white petticoat here
- 20:45here a silk scarf, paris, all gloves, bucket, handkerchief. Inspect
- 20:52the handkerchief du farm. Thank you. You note the name Marie Rouge embroidered
- 20:59them. Yes, yes, so this is the place she met her death.
- 21:03Well, of course it is, and I have found it. Look.
- 21:06Look the earth has trampled where she struggled, and over here the bush
- 21:11is still broken, every evidence of a terrible struggle. And here here the
- 21:17offence has been taken down, and the ground showed that some heavy burden was
- 21:19dragged along it toward the river. We come, come, look for yourself.
- 21:26Ah, what say you? Now? I am wondering, wonder well
- 21:32we have facts, now, sir, important facts. Do you recall a
- 21:36strip of one of the unfortunate girl's petticoat had been tied about her mouth,
- 21:40probably to prevent her screams? I do This was done by fellows who had
- 21:44no pocket, handkerchiefs, miscreance dupa miscleants, such as those who visited Madame
- 21:51de Luxe tavern and later went the same way as Marie Joiget and her companion.
- 21:56There are many such gangs about here. Oh you have to do is
- 22:00locate them. And I know how to do that. That night, the
- 22:12shrill cries of the Paris newsboys proclaimed the Prefect's resolved. He offered a reward
- 22:18of twenty thousand francs and a full pardon for any king's evidence. It was
- 22:23an accepted conclusion that Mary Roget had been waylaid and slain by a gang of
- 22:30miscreants in the vicinity of Madame du LAX's tavern. Ah, well, are
- 22:37you defeated, Monsieur DuPont, now that I have solved the mystery of Marie
- 22:42Roge. No, Monsieur, I have doubled the reward. Soon one of
- 22:48the miscreants will come forward. Then you'll see. Forty thousand francs should be
- 22:52temptation enough. Twenty thousand was temptation enough. No one will come forward,
- 22:57Monsieur. A gang such as is hoped for would be composed of men who
- 23:03have never seen more than one hundred francs at one time. Twenty thousand would
- 23:07bring all of them if if they had any knowledge of Marie Roge's murder.
- 23:14Oh, they're just waiting, you know that, waiting when each is in
- 23:18jeopardy because of the other. We shall see you bar wait. It was
- 23:23one man a man who dragged the body of Mademoiselle at the river's edge.
- 23:30A gang even two men could have carried it. Ah gang would have lifted
- 23:36it over the fence easily, instead of taking a fence down. As it
- 23:41was taken down, one man labored hard by conjectures as good as yours?
- 23:48Are you talking of santu stage No, No, he is quite unguilty.
- 23:53Monsieur, Allow me to point out that the newspapers, the police all have
- 23:59it dents themselves with what apparently happened. We must consider what did not happen.
- 24:06First, a gang did not set upon her and murderer. Secondly,
- 24:11Marie Roget had no intention of visiting her aunt at Rue de Drome when she
- 24:15left her mother in Lover last Sunday morning. Do you p if you have
- 24:19confident information, explain yourself. I have the same information as you. Nothing
- 24:25else. You said she had no intention of visiting her aunt that day.
- 24:30Why do you say that, monsieur? Consider what might have happened if her
- 24:33intended Jacques Santroustache had called for her at her aunt's and discovered she was not
- 24:40there, that she had not been there all day, he would have been
- 24:42chagrined, suspicious, angry. Santostache would have been all these something for Marie
- 24:49Roge to worry about when she returned home, but nothing to worry about.
- 24:55If Marie did not intend to return home a point to consider, perhaps one
- 25:02consider that she kept the rendezvous instead. This we know, a rendezvous with
- 25:07a swarthy man. We have been told that by two witnesses who saw him.
- 25:11Now, monsieur, I ask you, as I have asked myself.
- 25:15Did this swarthy companion allow Marie to be slain before his eyes? Or was
- 25:22he himself slain trying to help her? If so, where is his body?
- 25:26He left her before she was set upon? Obviously did he leave her
- 25:30alone in such a dark district? They quarreled, indeed they did. Another
- 25:34question. Marie Roget's death is known everywhere in France. Why has he not
- 25:41come forward to help us clear up the mystery? Many reasons. Perhaps he's
- 25:47married, he's left, he's uninformed. He has a swarthy complexion, a
- 25:52sea complexion, a well attested fact. Now accumulate that with the cord that
- 25:59was tied about her neck in a sailor's not Mischieur dupa, I have but
- 26:03to slan, the need of a skilled boatman to handle a boat on the
- 26:08river to dispose of the body. But it could be, it could not.
- 26:12Whe Mary Roget was a gay, not an abject girl. No common
- 26:18seaman for her, an officer, a naval officer monsieur, like the one
- 26:23who might have led her into a false elopement the first time she disappeared,
- 26:29three years past the approved time for a french man of war to consume encircling
- 26:34the globe. The officer returns, thinking of the same coquette, marry rogie,
- 26:41the same bargain what he has managed to do once he can do again.
- 26:48Murray meets him Sunday for this purpose. Then she thinks the better of
- 26:52an elopement and refuses to accompany him. Santa stashe has captured her love slays
- 27:00her in quick anger bags a body to the river. Come and here's a
- 27:03boat. Where do I find him? On? Whatever ship has arrived from
- 27:07the world? Crew his name? What is his name? Jupa inquire for
- 27:11the name of the young officer who has applied for leaves to get married.
- 27:15But there must be many such among a ship's compliment. Returning out for a
- 27:18long cruise, agreed, but Monsieur the Prefect, there is only one naval
- 27:25officer who has returned to his ship without a bride. Oh, Andre Andrea,
- 27:33we leave at once for the naval yards. It has been an interesting
- 27:45evening, and now I issue a last invitation, my friends. I invite
- 27:51you to retain all that you have heard and employ this time instead of your
- 27:56imagination, your sense of reality. For Marie Roget of Paris was truthfully Mary
- 28:03Rogers of New York. Let your reality move you back to New York City
- 28:08on a winter day, some months after the event described in the darkening afternoon,
- 28:15inside a gray stone building. I invite you to attend another event I
- 28:19think you will find significant. Ensign Robert Bryant Wilson, you have been found
- 28:34guilty of the murder of Mary Cecilia Rogers. It is the judgment of this
- 28:41court that you be hanged by the neck until you are dead. Suspense presented
- 29:10by Autolite to Night Star mister Cornell Wild. This is Harlow Wilcox speaking for

- 31:03reed thought looks at your neighborhood auto might dealers which do auto light. Good
- 31:08night, This is the CBS Radio Network, Welcome back. Wasn't that an
- 31:32incredible story about how Edgar Allen Poe solved the murder of Mary Rogers. Uh,
- 31:41there's only one problem with it. The entire thing is a complaint,
- 31:45fabrication the actual murder. In terms of Edgar Allan Poe solving the case.
- 31:52Uh, Edgar Allen Poe's solution didn't solve the case. In fact, it
- 31:57remains unsolved right up until this day. And there was even one author who
- 32:07suggested, somewhat implausibly that Poe actually did the crime, and it was kind
- 32:16of a flimsy suggestion. It's one of those things with we have. One
- 32:23of our biases I think with mystery writers is we really assume if you can
- 32:29sit there and come up with all of these odd and bizarre ways to kill
- 32:36people. You must have killed somebody yourself. You wouldn't just develop all this
- 32:42stuff for novels. But there's no real proof that Poe did it. It
- 32:46just does remain one of those great unsolved mysteries and one of the most baffling
- 32:52ones in New York City history. But this is somewhat noteworthy in that it
- 32:59was the first detective story based on the actual case. And so when you
- 33:06go down the line today, when you can follow this story in anyways,
- 33:13is an ancestor of what we would hear on drag Now and what we would
- 33:19later see if you watched episodes of Law and Order, where cases were actually
- 33:23taken right from the headlines and used as a basis for the mystery story.
- 33:29Well, so this episode somewhat remarkable for suspense. It's nineteen fifty three radio
- 33:35definitely in decline, but just an incredible cast. You know, William john
- 33:39Stone, John Dayner, and it sounded like the announcer on this one was
- 33:47Larry Thor and of course Cornell Wilde, who wasn't at the height of his
- 33:52career but still a pretty well known Hollywood player. Really some strong players even
- 34:00at this point on suspense. So Suspense continuing to be just a solid powerhouse
- 34:08of radio talent even as radio was headed towards the fates. Suspense had about
- 34:17a nine more years on the air, and during that time they would redo
- 34:22this story, but they would continue to assist you. Seven years later they
- 34:27did in nineteen sixty, but they would also still say that and gra Allan
- 34:31Poe solved it when it actually does remain sold or is actually unsolved. All
- 34:39right, listener comments and feedback. We have this from Aaron. I'll miss
- 34:45Sherlock Holmes, but all the shows are fun, to be honest. I
- 34:47like Sir Richardson better than any of the people who played Watson. He played
- 34:52him intelligently more than any of the others. Did keep up the good work
- 34:57at him. Well, thanks so much, Aaron, and kind of taking
- 35:01a different point of view, we had this from. We had this from
- 35:07a listener here. Let me just go ahead and pull us up. Justin
- 35:12commented on Facebook. I like the older voice actors of Sherlock Holmes before the
- 35:15current ones you posted, so the ones that we had on the clipper Craft
- 35:21shows interesting perspective, but those different perspectives among our listeners. Jeremy says Adam
- 35:30Great's shows. Sorry to see Sherlock Holmes to come to an end. Have
- 35:35you ever considered Casey Crime Photographer? Keep up the good work, Jeremy.
- 35:38It is definitely on my list, and it's one that I hope to do
- 35:44in the next few years. Yeah, I've got a lot of shows on
- 35:49that list. There are some that I haven't even thought of when I will
- 35:52do it, but I'm looking maybe the next three four years, but we
- 36:04will see on that. It's, you know, a lot of shows to
- 36:07get to. In Casey, there's I think about sixty or seventy episodes out
- 36:14there, so it'll take a while to get through, so I want to
- 36:15be sure we've got a good chunk of time to do that. So thanks
- 36:22so much for the suggestion and glad to hear it. I heard Casey mentioned
- 36:28several times when we first started, and haven't heard listeners mentioning it as much
- 36:32the last few years. But it's definitely on my list and we'll be looking
- 36:38for an opportunity to go ahead and do that sometime in the future. All
- 36:44right, Well, that will do it for today. We've got one more
- 36:47of these DuPont mysteries to go through and then we'll be on to Nick Carter,
- 36:55so join us. Next Thursday, we'll be bringing you the Purloined Letter.
- 37:00On tomorrow we'll go ahead and wrap up yours truly, Johnny Dollars current
- 37:06serial and continue on with High Sky Hoodoo. In the meantime, send your
- 37:12comments to Box thirteenth, Great Detectors dot net, follow us on Twitter,
