Transcript
- 0:00These next few chapters seem more like observations,
- 0:05warnings, insights, and so forth from Isaiah, and he's speaking
- 0:11to the people of Judah, apparently.
- 0:16But I also think that some of these things, as we get deeper
- 0:20into the chapters, they do reflect warnings today as well
- 0:25and things that we can learn today.
- 0:26So I will read through as many chapters as makes sense so it
- 0:31doesn't get too long. Let's start with chapter 57 and
- 0:35a prayer. Dear God, please give us wisdom
- 0:38and insight as we read through these words so that we can apply
- 0:42what you intended for us to take away from this for our
- 0:46understanding and warnings and promises and so forth.
- 0:53We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. The righteous perish and no one
- 0:59takes it to heart. The devout are taken away and no
- 1:03one understands that the righteous are taken away to be
- 1:07spared from evil. I want to pause right there
- 1:11because how many times in your life have you ever thought this
- 1:16was such a good person? Why did that happen to them?
- 1:19They were doing so many good things.
- 1:21They were and unexpectedly gone early.
- 1:24And why would God do that? A lot of people do ask that
- 1:28question, and I never had a good answer for that.
- 1:33But it was like inside of me, I had this feeling that God knows
- 1:40more than what we do. And if God does it, we need to
- 1:44trust him. And this very statement in
- 1:48Isaiah chapter 57 is something I think we should all remember
- 1:52because listen to what it says. It says the righteous are taken
- 1:56away to be spared from evil. So if someone is taken away
- 2:02early, there is something that God knows that is coming in
- 2:07their lifetime and out of His mercy He takes them away.
- 2:13We know that God, he, he protects His children and He
- 2:20loves people and He wants good for all people.
- 2:24When things come about, anything that is harsh like judgment or
- 2:29things like that from God, those things are not intended as
- 2:34punishment, but as a correction. Sometimes people don't learn
- 2:41unless it's something that really startles them.
- 2:44And that's what God uses judgement for.
- 2:47So none of his judgement is, you know, for his children is to
- 2:52make is to be mean to them at all.
- 2:55It's to get them to get back on track.
- 2:57And because we have been stubborn, sometimes He needs to
- 3:02use bigger things to get our attention.
- 3:05But I'm kind of get a little sidetracked because this
- 3:08statement actually just talks about the righteous are taken
- 3:12away to be spared from evil. And I, I do believe that the
- 3:19discussion that people have today about this whole rapture
- 3:24thing that people talk about and end is in the Bible.
- 3:28There's no question about it. I, I definitely believe that
- 3:32people are taken out of the way before God's wrath occurs.
- 3:37I do believe that people experience tribulation and they
- 3:41have for all of history in the Bible.
- 3:45They didn't necessarily get to avoid every bit of tribulation,
- 3:50but experience that. But when wrath comes, they will
- 3:55be taken out of the way because God is sparing people and people
- 4:01who have prepared, who have, who don't need to go through that.
- 4:04They've already been tested in life.
- 4:07They've shown their commitment to God.
- 4:10And this is this is what I believe.
- 4:13So I believe it is for someone who we don't understand why they
- 4:18were taken out of their life so early.
- 4:21I think that is we need to hold on, rest on Isaiah chapter 57
- 4:27because it really does tell us that they're, they're being
- 4:31spared from evil. And we have to trust God and
- 4:36know that God is good. And God knows the day we were
- 4:39born, he planned it, He created us and he knows when he's going
- 4:44to take us. And he's also like Hezekiah was
- 4:47one where he actually gave Hezekiah another 15 years and
- 4:51told him and actually gave him physical signs that he would see
- 4:55that he would know that the reason he's still living 15
- 4:58years more is because God said it.
- 5:02Like God is in charge of our life and when we're born and
- 5:06when we die and we don't get to change that.
- 5:11I mean, people try to do that, but if we're doing that, we're
- 5:13going against God's will. So we need to let God be God and
- 5:19let him decide because he knows things we don't know.
- 5:23There have also been, this just came to mind.
- 5:26There's been some testimonies that I've heard from people who
- 5:28have pretty big ministries and before they actually came to
- 5:34faith, they had considered dying, doing it themselves,
- 5:40actually. And when you look back at that
- 5:45and then you see the powerful ministry, the powerful service
- 5:50that they're doing for God today, that they didn't take
- 5:54their life and that they are speaking on behalf of God and
- 5:58have experienced miracles. And they are, they have very,
- 6:02very strong faith. It's, it makes you wonder, was
- 6:06that the enemy, God's enemy? Which I, this is what I believe
- 6:10actually speaking, you know, influencing people, giving them
- 6:15those thoughts that where they, they don't want to live anymore
- 6:21and they want, they want to do something about it themselves.
- 6:25And I don't think that is, that is absolutely, I mean, it's
- 6:29proven it's not from God. It is from the enemy because the
- 6:32enemy seeks to kill and destroy. If any of those people who had
- 6:36really strong ministries would have moved forward with their
- 6:42feelings, then they would have done something that would have
- 6:47depleted all of the good that they were able to do after that
- 6:51moment, that moment of transition where God began to
- 6:54work in their life and then built this really significant
- 6:57ministry. And the, you know, there's two
- 6:59that are really, really significant who have stories
- 7:03like this. Do you like just very severe
- 7:05depression that came about, but then God has turned it into
- 7:09something great. And I do think maybe there was
- 7:13some insight from God's enemy that could see that these people
- 7:17were something special that God had intended for something
- 7:21special. And so the enemy wanted to
- 7:25remove them from doing that. And and that's so anyone who has
- 7:31those feelings or doubts or anything, just trust God.
- 7:36God has something better in store.
- 7:38He can use anyone, even if you feel like you're at your lowest
- 7:41point in life, don't worry about it because just turn to God
- 7:47because things can change so drastically and God can use
- 7:52anything that we've been through for the good of others and for
- 7:57ourselves for our life, you know, but it's everything that
- 8:00God does is really for the benefit of others.
- 8:02It's completely selfless. Love is selfless and that's what
- 8:07God does. So anyway, I've kind of gone off
- 8:10a little bit too far, but I just thought this was such a a great
- 8:14verse to keep in mind. The righteous are taken away to
- 8:17be spared from evil. Those who walk uprightly enter
- 8:22into peace. They find rest as they lie in
- 8:26death. I have also heard testimonies
- 8:29from Hospice caregivers who have said that people who were
- 8:34believers had a very peaceful transition is what I'm going to
- 8:38call it into death. People who were non believers
- 8:42had a very chaotic transfer. It was not comfortable, it was
- 8:48not peaceful. And people, nurses who do this
- 8:52have noticed a difference in people.
- 8:55So that's something that is just worth taking note because the
- 9:02Bible is true. And if we are close to God, we
- 9:08have a peace. God gives us that peace.
- 9:11It's not our own peace. It's something that comes from
- 9:14God. So let's continue.
- 9:16But now here we go into the other side of things.
- 9:20But you come here, you children of a sorceress, you ought, you
- 9:26offspring of adulterers and prostitutes.
- 9:30Who are you mocking? So this is talking about the
- 9:33people who don't believe anything from the prophet
- 9:36Isaiah. They don't believe what God's
- 9:38saying, and they think that they're fine the way they are.
- 9:43And Isaiah is saying, you know, you're children of a sorceress,
- 9:47adulterers, prostitutes. You're mocking.
- 9:52At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue?
- 9:55Are you not a brood of rebels, the offspring of liars?
- 10:01That's something else that I noticed in the book of Genesis,
- 10:03that God said he would put enmity between the woman's seed
- 10:08and the serpent's seed, which I believe the serpent was Satan.
- 10:12And and then I thought seed, does Satan have offspring?
- 10:16And some of this in Scripture does allude to that.
- 10:20And I don't know, like God creates everything.
- 10:24So is it just because of a decision that people make that
- 10:27they reject God and then they become the offspring of Satan?
- 10:31I don't really know. That's beyond what the Bible
- 10:33covers. But I just think it's it was
- 10:36interesting. So you burn with lust among the
- 10:41oaks and under every spreading tree.
- 10:44You sacrifice your children in the ravines and under the
- 10:47overhanging Craigs. So that's another thing.
- 10:51The sacrifice of children, that was a form of worship back then
- 10:55to the Pagan gods that they believed in, and they would
- 10:59literally sacrifice their children.
- 11:02And here's the great deception that's occurring in our world
- 11:05today is that that same, if you want to call it that same spirit
- 11:11is at work. That evil spirit is at work
- 11:13today because it's convincing people to abort their children.
- 11:19It's no different than the sacrifice that Moloch to Moloch
- 11:23because people when they make that decision, they are take,
- 11:28they are doing what is in God's control.
- 11:31If God doesn't want that child to come forth, he that child
- 11:35will not come forth. If God does want that child to
- 11:39come forth, then the child will come forth.
- 11:41And that means that if we just leave everything alone, God will
- 11:48do what is necessary. There have been there.
- 11:51If you look at people and you get to know people, there are
- 11:54really good people that come from bad parents and there are
- 11:58really bad parents that have good children.
- 12:01So you can't you can't say that that future person or that
- 12:07person who's developing is our decision.
- 12:12You know, we, we to cut somebody's life short.
- 12:15That's really what essentially it is.
- 12:17It's sacrificing children and it's sacrificing children for
- 12:22the what the parents believe. And they think that they just
- 12:26want, they don't want to be bothered by whatever this is
- 12:29either, you know, if it's the man or the woman, whoever's, you
- 12:34know, deciding this. It's just that they don't want
- 12:37to be bothered by what is about to come.
- 12:40It's going to make it inconvenient for them.
- 12:42And, and it's no different than the sacrifice to Molech if you
- 12:47look into this. And it's not our place to decide
- 12:51that God will decide it. The idols among the smooth
- 12:56stones of the ravines are your, are your portion.
- 12:59Indeed, they are your lot. Yes to them.
- 13:02You have poured out drink offerings and offered green
- 13:05offerings. In view of all this, should I
- 13:07relent? You have made your bed on a high
- 13:10and lofty hill where you went up to offer your sacrifices.
- 13:14Behind your doors and your doorposts you have put your
- 13:18Pagan symbols. Forsaking me, you uncovered your
- 13:22bed. You climbed into it and opened
- 13:25it wide. You made a pact with those whose
- 13:28beds you love, and you looked with lust on their naked bodies.
- 13:33You went to Molech with olive oil and increased your perfumes.
- 13:39You sent your ambassadors far away.
- 13:42You descended to the very realm of the dead.
- 13:46You wearied yourself by going about, by such going about.
- 13:51But you would say it is hopeless.
- 13:55You found renewal. Oh, you would not say it is
- 13:59hopeless. You found renewal of your
- 14:01strength, and so you did not faint.
- 14:06Whom have you so dreaded and feared that you have not been
- 14:10true to me, and have neither remembered me nor taken this to
- 14:15heart? Is it not because I have been
- 14:18long silent that you do not fear me?
- 14:22So this is God speaking through Isaiah, and he's saying, you
- 14:26know, how did you get to this place?
- 14:27How, how did you make all these decisions and do these things
- 14:31and turn away from me and turn to these other like false gods
- 14:35who have can do nothing for you. And that happens to people
- 14:40today. Maybe people today are not
- 14:42worshipping wooden statues or things like that, but people
- 14:45turn away from God and go about their own life doing all these
- 14:50things that are against what God had commanded.
- 14:55And they don't even think anything about it, about it.
- 14:58And it's, you know, it says here, is it not because I have
- 15:01long been silent that you do not fear me?
- 15:05There's a point in time where God just, you know, it says God
- 15:09hears the prayers of the righteous.
- 15:11So if we are not being righteous and we're praying to God, God,
- 15:17he may, I mean, he knows everything that's going on, but
- 15:19he's not going to respond to that.
- 15:21And I don't know if that's something legal that, you know,
- 15:24if if we reject him and we choose something else, then
- 15:29legally he can't respond to our claims because God is just and
- 15:34he's merciful and compassionate and all these things.
- 15:38So for him not to listen, it seems like it must be some sort
- 15:43of legal reason why he can't. Like we've decided we're
- 15:47rejected him now we're aligned with something else, something
- 15:52evil is what it is. And then when we pray, our
- 15:55prayers don't get answered and instead we need to turn to God
- 16:00and do the things that he wants us to do because it says that he
- 16:04always hears a prayer when somebody calls to him for help
- 16:08and he wants everyone to come to repentance.
- 16:10So maybe there's some legal authority or legal transition of
- 16:14power that effects when we speak into because we've been given
- 16:20free will. So we it's kind of like, you
- 16:23know, you think about it like a court case where you get
- 16:26represented by one person or another party.
- 16:29But when you're represented by one party, you can't go to a
- 16:33different party to get advice. So if you are going, you've made
- 16:38an alliance with God's enemy, other gods, other not real gods
- 16:46but fake gods or just Satan himself, you make an alliance
- 16:51with him. You're under his control.
- 16:53You can't go to God and then go to the enemy off and on like
- 17:00whenever you want. But if you turn to God, then he
- 17:04can help you. But you have to like cut off
- 17:06your ties with the other one. You have to break that contract
- 17:10if you want to call it that with the enemy.
- 17:13And I think that could be a reason why some of our prayers
- 17:17don't get answered, especially when it says, you know, God goes
- 17:20silent, he turns away. And I just don't see that as
- 17:24God's nature to do that except that there was some legal thing
- 17:30that we don't really understand that, OK, we've chosen this.
- 17:34So he can't he he can because he ultimately has power over
- 17:38everything. But he's also just and
- 17:41righteous, so he abides by laws. So that's just a thought.
- 17:45That's an opinion, something to think about.
- 17:48And so I'll continue with what Isaiah says.
- 17:50I will expose your righteousness and your works, and they will
- 17:54not benefit you when you cry out for help.
- 17:58Let your collection of idols save you.
- 18:01The wind will carry all of them off.
- 18:04A mere breath will blow them away.
- 18:07But whoever takes refuge in me will inherit the land and
- 18:11possess my holy mountain, and it will be said, build up, build
- 18:16up, prepare the road, remove the obstacles out of the way of my
- 18:20people. For this is what the high and
- 18:23exalted One says, He who lives forever, whose name is holy.
- 18:29I live in a high and holy place, and also with the one who is
- 18:33contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly
- 18:42and to revive the heart of the contrite.
- 18:45I will not accuse them forever, nor will I always be angry, for
- 18:51then they would faint away because of me, the very people I
- 18:55have created. I was enraged by their sinful
- 18:59greed. I punished them and hid my face
- 19:03in anger, yet they kept on their willful ways, on in their
- 19:08willful ways. I have seen their ways.
- 19:10But I will heal them. I will guide them and restore
- 19:15comfort to Israeli mourners, creating praise on their lips.
- 19:20Peace, peace to those far and near, says the Lord, and I will
- 19:25heal them. But the wicked are like the
- 19:28tossing sea which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mirror and
- 19:34mud. There is no peace, says my God,
- 19:37for the wicked. And that's the end of chapter
- 19:4157. I'll read what the study Bible
- 19:43says about these about this chapter.
- 19:48OK. Is death a means of escape?
- 19:51In denouncing Judah's leaders, Isaiah observed that there would
- 19:56be so little spiritual perception that the
- 19:59disappearance of the righteous from among them would go
- 20:03unnoticed. The prophet also noted that for
- 20:06a righteous person, death is is to be spared from evil, enter
- 20:11into peace, and find rest. This does not mean that suicide
- 20:15is an option for believers who want to escape pain.
- 20:18It simply means that those who walk in God's righteousness will
- 20:22one day be rewarded for their faithfulness.
- 20:27What was going on among the oaks?
- 20:29The Pagan rites of Canaan featured sacred trees pandered
- 20:34to the sexual appetites of the worshippers during the reigns of
- 20:38Ahaz and Manasseh. Isaiah must have been deeply
- 20:42grieved by Judah's indulgence in these rites, which even included
- 20:46the practice of child sacrifice. What sort of Pagan symbols did
- 20:50they use? God's people had been commanded
- 20:52to take commanded to place God's commands on their doors to
- 20:58remind them of the Lord continually.
- 21:01And that's from Deuteronomy chapter 6, verse 9.
- 21:05Here Isaiah said that instead of God's commands, they had placed
- 21:09symbols by idolatry on their doors.
- 21:12Since the idolatry included sexual orgies, it is possible
- 21:17the symbols were themselves sexual in nature.
- 21:21The rest of the verse may refer to ritual prostitution.
- 21:25At any rate, the people had quote gone to bed with their
- 21:29Pagan gods. Who was Molech?
- 21:32Molech, the primary God of the Ammonites, was worshipped by
- 21:36some Canaanites. Worship of Molech included human
- 21:39sacrifice, as likely referenced in Isaiah 57.
- 21:43Five What was wrong with olive oil and perfumes?
- 21:47They likely refer, either literally or metaphorically, to
- 21:50rights associated with the worship of the Pagan God Molech.
- 21:56Or this could refer to the Israelites practice over the
- 21:59years of sending ambassadors to a foreign king to negotiate an
- 22:03alliance. Either way, the Israelites went
- 22:07to great lengths in their rebellion against God.
- 22:10How did they descend to the very realm of the dead?
- 22:13Assuming this verse refers to idolatry, Isaiah's point was
- 22:19either that the Israelites made extreme efforts to find other
- 22:22gods or that their journeys, their journey, ended in death.
- 22:27The Hebrew word for grave is sheol, so the point may be that
- 22:32the Israelites even worshipped the gods of the underworld and
- 22:37or indulged in necromancy. Where does God live?
- 22:44The Bible often describes heaven as God's home.
- 22:47It also speaks of God living among or within his people.
- 22:51Here Isaiah combined both ideas in a beautiful way.
- 22:55God lives in heaven, but he also lives with the humble people to
- 22:59give them hope and confidence. Why didn't?
- 23:06Why didn't punishment do any good?
- 23:08One way God punishes His people is to withdraw His presence from
- 23:13them. Often those who feel abandoned
- 23:15by God suddenly recognize their need for him and repent.
- 23:20Other times, however, people are so stubborn and determined to go
- 23:24their own way that they refuse to admit their need.
- 23:28Punishment sometimes galvanizes the resistance of those who want
- 23:32to rebel. That's the end of Chapter 57, so
- 23:37we will stop there. And next time, start up with
- 23:41Chapter 58.
