Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome into today's program. I'm Cameron Parker filling in for
- 0:03Speaker 1: Craig Way. Glad to have you with us, and boy
- 0:05Speaker 1: do we have a fun show plan for you today.
- 0:10Speaker 1: First off, Craig Wegg in Lexington, Kentucky, as Texas Baseball
- 0:15Speaker 1: on the road at Kentucky Proud Park for an SEC
- 0:19Speaker 1: Conference series against the Kentucky Wildcats. The top rank long
- 0:23Speaker 1: Corns to the conference against the Wildcats. So Craig and
- 0:26Speaker 1: Keith Morland, his broadcast partner, getting ready for the three
- 0:29Speaker 1: game series. In fact, Craig and Keith will join us
- 0:31Speaker 1: top of the three o'clock hour, get their thoughts on
- 0:34Speaker 1: this series, get their thoughts on the Masters, and maybe
- 0:38Speaker 1: the cuisine in Lexington, Kentucky. So that's coming up as well.
- 0:43Speaker 1: It is Friday, it is round two of the Masters.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Scotty Scheffler your eight. We'll fire it up there to
- 0:53Speaker 1: ask Scotty Scheffler on the course two under right now
- 0:57Speaker 1: through six holes, as the former Longhorn looking to go
- 1:02Speaker 1: back to back at Augusta and win his third third
- 1:06Speaker 1: green jacket right now in a fantastic spot and as
- 1:09Speaker 1: he is just getting his round underway, in fact, just
- 1:11Speaker 1: fired an absolute dart on the sixth hole that par three,
- 1:15Speaker 1: stuck at it in nicely and close to make his
- 1:18Speaker 1: second birdie of the day. So he is currently two
- 1:21Speaker 1: back of Justin Rose, who is in the clubhouse with
- 1:24Speaker 1: a seventy one. The day has extended his lead to
- 1:28Speaker 1: one shot. He's got some serious guys chasing him, including
- 1:32Speaker 1: Ry McElroy, Rice in the Shambo, Corey Conners, and Scottie Schefferd.
- 1:36Speaker 2: So all four of those guys at six under par.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Scotty on the front nine, Corey Connors making the turn
- 1:44Speaker 1: right now he's two under par, Bryson the Shambo currently
- 1:47Speaker 1: on the seventeenth hole, and Roy McElroy, who when I
- 1:50Speaker 1: signed off on the air yesterday was four under par.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And Rory was my pick to win the tournament this
- 1:57Speaker 1: year coming in, I thought he has been playing the
- 2:00Speaker 1: best golf out of any golfer right now in the world.
- 2:03Speaker 1: He won, He's won twice this season, including at the
- 2:05Speaker 1: Players Championship about a month ago, and it felt like
- 2:10Speaker 1: this was a new Rory mclroy and feel feeling great
- 2:16Speaker 1: as he made the turn. It got to what the
- 2:19Speaker 1: fourteenth hole, fifteenth hole in the fairway, hits his second
- 2:22Speaker 1: shot in the par five, still behind the green, and
- 2:27Speaker 1: what's funny is right before that saw Patrick Cantley hit
- 2:31Speaker 1: it in the water twice from where Roy was.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I think Cantley made a triple bogee.
- 2:36Speaker 1: But Roy's back there in command of his shot four
- 2:39Speaker 1: under par, and what happens. Ry McRoy chips on the green,
- 2:43Speaker 1: the ball rolls, rolls past the cup and down into
- 2:47Speaker 1: the tributary just in front of the fifteen green, ends
- 2:50Speaker 1: up making double bogie. Okay, two under par. Justin Rose
- 2:55Speaker 1: at seven under part were fine, you know he's still
- 2:57Speaker 1: top ten. Well, gets to the seventeenth pole in what
- 3:01Speaker 1: happens a very very very poor double bogie, ends up
- 3:06Speaker 1: making two double bogies in two of his last four
- 3:09Speaker 1: holes on the property, ends up shooting a seventy two,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and Roy McElroy ends up doing what he's done so
- 3:16Speaker 1: many times on a Thursday at the Masters, and that's
- 3:20Speaker 1: just shoot himself out of the competition. But has come
- 3:24Speaker 1: back today and is currently six under par. Rat right
- 3:28Speaker 1: now would be the lowest round on the property by
- 3:31Speaker 1: at least a shot. Just hit his t shot at
- 3:34Speaker 1: eighteen a little bit right, but through his round, made
- 3:37Speaker 1: one birdie on the front nine, Bertie on the second
- 3:40Speaker 1: hope has absolutely blistered the back nine, including Birdie's on
- 3:43Speaker 1: ten eleven, an ego on thirteen, and Folks, if you
- 3:47Speaker 1: haven't been watching the coverage today, I highly recommend either
- 3:50Speaker 1: you go to the Masters app or the Master's website
- 3:53Speaker 1: and it's, by the way, this is probably the best
- 3:54Speaker 1: app in all sports because you can go back and
- 3:56Speaker 1: watch every single shot from every golfer. You want to
- 3:59Speaker 1: see Nick doun Lap hit it left of left on
- 4:02Speaker 1: the third hole yesterday, you can do that. If you
- 4:03Speaker 1: want to see Roy McElroy, you can, and I encourage
- 4:06Speaker 1: you to watch his second shot from the pine shraw
- 4:09Speaker 1: on the thirteenth. Remember Phil Mickelson shot when he won
- 4:11Speaker 1: in twenty eleven wasn't as clutch as that, but I mean,
- 4:15Speaker 1: a fantastic shot from Rory ends up making eagle on thirteen.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Birdie's fifteen back to back pars and currently is on
- 4:22Speaker 1: the eighteenth hole looking to secure the low round of
- 4:25Speaker 1: the day and pull himself right back in this tournament.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Currently two back from Justin Rose. Scotty Scheffer, by the way,
- 4:33Speaker 1: just hit his t shot in seven and that is
- 4:35Speaker 1: right or right, so good start. There for Scotty, but
- 4:37Speaker 1: he's still under par right now. And then Bryce to
- 4:39Speaker 1: the shambo. Either your favorite golfer or the golfer you
- 4:42Speaker 1: hate the most, just made bogie on sixteen, so he
- 4:45Speaker 1: actually was one back of Justin Rose now on seventeen
- 4:48Speaker 1: where he made bogy yesterday but just stripped it down
- 4:51Speaker 1: the fairway. So a chance for Bryson maybe with a
- 4:53Speaker 1: wedge in hand, to get back to seven under par,
- 4:56Speaker 1: but he's two back from Justin Rose, who has finished
- 5:00Speaker 1: his day with a seventy one Rose your current leader,
- 5:03Speaker 1: Corey Connors, also at six under, and then at five
- 5:06Speaker 1: under par. You got Victor Hovlin and Shane Lowry, both
- 5:08Speaker 1: are four under on their round right now, both playing
- 5:11Speaker 1: the seventeenth and eighteenth hole. And then Matt McCarty sixty eight.
- 5:16Speaker 1: McCarty coming in this week, I had no idea who
- 5:18Speaker 1: he was, but making his Master's debut, a second Masters
- 5:21Speaker 1: or sorry Major championship start from Santa Clara University, the Scottsdale,
- 5:27Speaker 1: Arizona Natives, so that makes sense.
- 5:29Speaker 2: That's a golf area there.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So McCarty in with a sixty eight, he's five under
- 5:33Speaker 1: for the tournament, and then at four under par. You
- 5:35Speaker 1: have Rasmus Hoyguard ludefig Oberg, the Texas Tech golfer, who
- 5:40Speaker 1: is even on his days so far, and then Jason
- 5:42Speaker 1: Day the Aussies, two under on his round currently at
- 5:45Speaker 1: four hundred par through six holes. He's just getting starred.
- 5:48Speaker 1: And a couple other big names at three hundred par
- 5:50Speaker 1: including Sun jam Hideki Matsyama, Tommy Fleetwood, Sam Burns, Harris English,
- 5:55Speaker 1: Brian Harmon, in Terrellhattan. So a lot of low scores
- 5:59Speaker 1: right now, but if you're watching the coverage right now,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you're seeing the win really pick up in this back
- 6:03Speaker 1: nine in the afternoon will be very interesting, I believe.
- 6:07Speaker 1: My guess is it will be very tough to score
- 6:10Speaker 1: with the greens firm and up. We're seeing guys currently
- 6:12Speaker 1: some of these par threes come up about twenty thirty
- 6:14Speaker 1: yards short or long trying to gauge the win. So
- 6:18Speaker 1: we'll see how that impacts other names. Lookout for Colin
- 6:21Speaker 1: Moore Kalak currently one under par, Max Homer, Daniel Berger,
- 6:26Speaker 1: Matt Fwickzpatrick cam Smith, Justin Thomas Minwell, Lee, Jordan Spieth,
- 6:30Speaker 1: all currently even for the tournament at one over par.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Wyndham Clark, Aukshay, Batilla, Stepstraca. How about Bernhard Longer and
- 6:38Speaker 1: his last masters currently inside the cut line and Freddy
- 6:42Speaker 1: Couples as well. Fred Couples also at one over par.
- 6:45Speaker 1: If you haven't seen him hole out, I think it
- 6:47Speaker 1: was the seventeenth pole yesterday maybe sorry, fourteenth from one
- 6:50Speaker 1: hundred and ninety one yards out. Freddy Couples, by the way,
- 6:53Speaker 1: finished one shot ahead of Roy Maulcroy, the world's best
- 6:56Speaker 1: golfer in finesh twenty shots ahead of Nick Dunlap, who
- 6:59Speaker 1: won a PGA Tour yesterday.
- 7:00Speaker 2: He is twenty one years old. That's why the game
- 7:02Speaker 2: of golf is so dang fun.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Tom Kim at won over par, Matt mcnely at won
- 7:06Speaker 1: over par, Patrick Cantley two over, part John rom Back
- 7:09Speaker 1: inside the cut line at two over, Cam Young at
- 7:12Speaker 1: two over, Phil Micholson at two over the cut line
- 7:14Speaker 1: right now projected at two over par. Some big names
- 7:19Speaker 1: right now outside the cut line include Dustin Johnson, Jonathan Vegas.
- 7:23Speaker 1: His first Master's appearance in twenty eighteen, will Sala Tours
- 7:26Speaker 1: had him picked to my pull that one hurts, big shot,
- 7:29Speaker 1: Bob McIntyre at three over par. Sergio Garcia seventy six
- 7:33Speaker 1: today he is two shots behind the cut line. Do
- 7:35Speaker 1: not think he'll fit it in Brooks CapCo Wow seventy
- 7:39Speaker 1: five today he is also three shots over the cut line.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Maybe depending on the weather, the cut line may move
- 7:44Speaker 1: back to three over par, but I think Sergio and
- 7:46Speaker 1: Brooks Kepco will be going home this weekend. Adam Scott
- 7:50Speaker 1: as well. He finished with a five five over par
- 7:53Speaker 1: for the tournament. Billy Horsel a pick for a lot
- 7:55Speaker 1: of people, seventy seven yesterday. He's currently even on the
- 7:58Speaker 1: course through this front nine five over par. So some
- 8:01Speaker 1: names there to look out for, and we'll continue to
- 8:03Speaker 1: update you on Masters coverage. Okay, mentioned Craig White and
- 8:08Speaker 1: Keith Walling coming on. Have some other special guests lined
- 8:10Speaker 1: up up next. We're gonna have Eric Henry from Horns
- 8:13Speaker 1: two four seven. I'm gonna actually do a little fun
- 8:14Speaker 1: segment here. We're gonna we're gonna draft who we think
- 8:18Speaker 1: are the ten most important Texas football players this spring.
- 8:22Speaker 2: That'll be coming up next.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Kevin Robbins, golf author and professor of the University of Texas,
- 8:27Speaker 1: who just wrote this fantastic piece on Scotti Scheffler for
- 8:30Speaker 1: Texas Monthly dot Com.
- 8:32Speaker 2: He will come on.
- 8:33Speaker 1: He sat down with Scotti Scheffler a few months ago,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and I'm gonna ask Kevin about the mind inside of
- 8:39Speaker 1: Scottie Shefflin, get his thoughts on the masters as well.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And then David Johnston, Texas swimmer, two time national champion
- 8:46Speaker 1: in US Olympian He'll come on our show about four
- 8:48Speaker 1: o'clock as well. I'm gonna visit with David talk about
- 8:51Speaker 1: Bob Bowman. You know, Texas winning their sixteenth national championship
- 8:56Speaker 1: in men's swimming and diving. So any David's thoughts on
- 8:58Speaker 1: the transition from going from Eddie Reesta Bobo. I mean,
- 9:00Speaker 1: that's what like going from I don't know, uh, what's
- 9:04Speaker 1: the comparison Red Auerbach to Phil Jackson.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I don't know the comparison is there.
- 9:08Speaker 1: But he went from Eddie Rees, who he won a
- 9:09Speaker 1: national championship with in twenty twenty one, to Bob Bowman,
- 9:12Speaker 1: who has won back to back national champions with two
- 9:15Speaker 1: different teams. He wont to Arizona State last year, comes
- 9:17Speaker 1: to Texas and wins with Texas this first year, first
- 9:20Speaker 1: year Texas in the SEC is so going to get
- 9:22Speaker 1: David's thoughts on that transition, his year, and also his
- 9:24Speaker 1: experience in the US Olympics.
- 9:26Speaker 2: David did compete in the Olympics.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Last season, unfortunately contracted COVID as I think half the
- 9:32Speaker 1: half the athletes that were staying in Paris. But get
- 9:35Speaker 1: his thoughts on that, that experience and more and some
- 9:38Speaker 1: fun stories about hanging out with Leron, James, Kevin Durant,
- 9:41Speaker 1: Steph Crie, all that and more.
- 9:43Speaker 2: So a real fun show for you. It is Friday.
- 9:46Speaker 2: What does that mean, guys, Friday inconceivable? That's right.
- 9:50Speaker 1: We traveled to the more flaccid of the lower forty
- 9:53Speaker 1: eight states in reach for that low hanging through. That's
- 9:56Speaker 1: all coming up on the Today's show. I'm fired up.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I hope you are as well. We are just gating
- 10:00Speaker 1: rolling here on the Craig Way Show. Of course, you
- 10:02Speaker 1: can listen for free on the iHeartRadio app, and of
- 10:05Speaker 1: course you can join the show by texting the word
- 10:07Speaker 1: Texas to eight one five three zero followed by your message,
- 10:10Speaker 1: or leave us a talk back message on the free
- 10:13Speaker 1: iHeart radio app.
- 10:15Speaker 2: We're just getting going.
- 10:16Speaker 1: More to come here, including Eric Henry from Horns two
- 10:18Speaker 1: four seven up next, not in Lexting, thinking Kentucky in
- 10:23Speaker 1: the more warmer climate of Austin, Texas. Is my good
- 10:26Speaker 1: buddy Eric Henry from Horns two four to seven got
- 10:28Speaker 1: a tank top on looking swoll.
- 10:31Speaker 2: What's up?
- 10:32Speaker 3: Eric?
- 10:32Speaker 2: How you doing?
- 10:34Speaker 4: Cam? That's a coincidence, folks.
- 10:36Speaker 5: We didn't plan that with Cam saying I'm in warmer
- 10:38Speaker 5: climate because we've got an ac issue going on in
- 10:41Speaker 5: my home and it is like eighty something degrees outside.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Hence the tank top.
- 10:46Speaker 5: That was not for the lovely audience watching on YouTube
- 10:48Speaker 5: at thirteen hundred on the YouTube channel camp.
- 10:51Speaker 1: But they're not complaining, that's for sure, because the drafts
- 10:53Speaker 1: are good. I mean, but hopefully windows up. You got
- 10:56Speaker 1: the ac man on the way, we.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Got windows, we got fan right here kicking. It's just
- 11:01Speaker 5: not you know, fully there. So hopefully by the at
- 11:04Speaker 5: the end of the day we'll be in good straights.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I hope, So, I hope. So for your sake, at
- 11:07Speaker 1: least it's not August. Rather, you rather get this out
- 11:09Speaker 1: of the way done in April and not August. So
- 11:12Speaker 1: why did to come on the day and do something
- 11:14Speaker 1: a little bit different here? I wanted to talk about
- 11:17Speaker 1: this Texas spring football team. And also, let's let's do
- 11:20Speaker 1: a draft of the ten most important players we think
- 11:23Speaker 1: and we'll do it based off timing here and see
- 11:25Speaker 1: how long it takes us. Sure, i'll give you first dips,
- 11:28Speaker 1: but we'll draft in order who we think are the
- 11:30Speaker 1: most important players of the Texas football team this spring
- 11:34Speaker 1: heading into twenty twenty five twenty twenty six season.
- 11:36Speaker 2: And Eric Henry take it away. Who's your first pick?
- 11:39Speaker 4: All right?
- 11:40Speaker 5: So you threw a little curveball at me because I
- 11:41Speaker 5: thought we were doing top ten players?
- 11:43Speaker 4: So are we still doing ten each?
- 11:44Speaker 1: Well, we'll see based on timing, but let's go with
- 11:46Speaker 1: t all right, Right, So I'll try to run through
- 11:48Speaker 1: quick cause I have ten.
- 11:49Speaker 5: At number ten, I will go tray more. I'll try
- 11:51Speaker 5: to keep this real quick. I think he's due for
- 11:53Speaker 5: a breakout here. We obviously know the expectations. He came
- 11:56Speaker 5: in with last year from UTSA was the American let
- 12:00Speaker 5: It Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
- 12:02Speaker 4: I think he's due, you know, Cam.
- 12:03Speaker 5: I think we saw him progress later in the year
- 12:05Speaker 5: last year, and I think he's due.
- 12:06Speaker 4: So that's my number ten person.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Yeah, trade Moore last season. I'm trying to pull up
- 12:10Speaker 1: his sacks. Last year, I think he ended up with
- 12:12Speaker 1: six and a half six and a half and in
- 12:16Speaker 1: this season now, I think the linebacking corps in the
- 12:20Speaker 1: on the defense is probably the most experienced group on
- 12:24Speaker 1: the football field.
- 12:25Speaker 5: That would be fair when you peer a Hill, Lafou
- 12:28Speaker 5: and then of course Brad Spence and more.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, give me your number nine most important player.
- 12:33Speaker 1: We got one down number number number nine.
- 12:36Speaker 5: This may be a little low for some folks, but
- 12:39Speaker 5: Mookie Taff coming back to the forty acres. Love the
- 12:41Speaker 5: veteran experience he brings on the back end. Again, don't
- 12:44Speaker 5: have to labor the point too long on Michael Taff.
- 12:46Speaker 5: We know the value that he brings a Texas football culture,
- 12:49Speaker 5: leadership and a player who is looking to have that
- 12:52Speaker 5: Jade Baron like jump from being a later pick in
- 12:55Speaker 5: the NFL draft who possibly a Day win or.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Day two pick.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Did you see Taff just sticking at s this next season?
- 13:02Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, it could be interesting if you want
- 13:06Speaker 5: to move him around a little bit, maybe try to
- 13:07Speaker 5: showcase some different skills. I st know that Taff, and
- 13:09Speaker 5: this is no disrespect on him. I don't know that
- 13:11Speaker 5: he has that same versatility. Excuse me that Jaddey Baron has.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Maybe you play him at Star a little bit, but
- 13:17Speaker 5: I think it's safety strictly for him.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Okay, So ten tray more, nine for Michael taff two
- 13:22Speaker 1: defensive players off the board.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Give me your eighth most important player this spring?
- 13:27Speaker 3: All right?
- 13:27Speaker 5: Number eight again, this one might be a little bit
- 13:30Speaker 5: of a shock, but Trey Wisner, Countravian Weisner. You know
- 13:33Speaker 5: Steve Starkegan's track record of having thousand yard rushers over
- 13:37Speaker 5: his head coaching career.
- 13:38Speaker 4: We spoke with Contrayveon yesterday.
- 13:40Speaker 5: He's looking to build on his kind of unexpected first
- 13:43Speaker 5: year as a starter. I remember CJ. Baxter, Jayden Blue,
- 13:46Speaker 5: Trey Wisner was supposed to be that third guy. Then
- 13:48Speaker 5: he steps up with the injuries and Jane Blues fumbling
- 13:51Speaker 5: issues as a thousand yard years.
- 13:52Speaker 4: If he can build on that, I think that would
- 13:54Speaker 4: be crucial.
- 13:55Speaker 1: It's a running back room that at the beginning of
- 13:57Speaker 1: last season we thought a lot of depth, and then
- 14:00Speaker 1: well everyone in the running back room got injured.
- 14:02Speaker 2: So this season, he returned CJ.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Baxter, you returned Christian Clark, You add in James Simon,
- 14:07Speaker 1: the freshman from Louisiana, who we heard we're gonna here
- 14:10Speaker 1: later on the show, Trey Wiser talk about him in
- 14:11Speaker 1: his mediability yesterday. We've heard a lot of good things
- 14:14Speaker 1: about Jay Simon, but of course it was Trey Wisner
- 14:16Speaker 1: who I think literally carried Texas to a factory over
- 14:19Speaker 1: A and M this past season. A one thousand year
- 14:22Speaker 1: old rusher and the one running back from last year
- 14:25Speaker 1: that actually played that will be returning to the team
- 14:27Speaker 1: this season with Jayden Blue no longer on the roster. Okay,
- 14:31Speaker 1: number seven for you.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Number seven, I'm gonna try it again.
- 14:34Speaker 5: Make this one pretty quick here in efficient Ryan Wingo,
- 14:37Speaker 5: I'll put it simply, cam everyone knows the name Jeremiah Smith,
- 14:41Speaker 5: everyone knows the name Ryan Williams. When it comes to
- 14:43Speaker 5: freshman Ryan Wingo got a little bit overshadowed. Here's the
- 14:47Speaker 5: fact of the matter. If you gave Ryan Wingo the
- 14:49Speaker 5: amount of targets that Jeremiah Smith and or Ryan Williams
- 14:52Speaker 5: had last year, his numbers would pair very similarly to
- 14:55Speaker 5: those two guys who are considered to be the cream
- 14:57Speaker 5: of the crop in terms of young receiver.
- 15:00Speaker 4: So Ryan Wingo is number.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Seven of the returning receivers from from last season, Wingo
- 15:04Speaker 1: had the most receiving yards four hundred and seventy two.
- 15:06Speaker 1: It's going to be a completely different receiver room for Texas.
- 15:10Speaker 1: But it also helps out because you know, Arch Manning
- 15:12Speaker 1: obviously worked a lot with Ryan Wingo this past season
- 15:15Speaker 1: as a freshman. The other part of this, too, Eric
- 15:18Speaker 1: is Wingo had Lasa Guye surgery I think in the
- 15:21Speaker 1: offseason correct, correct, Yes, So you know, usually as a
- 15:25Speaker 1: receiver you want to be able to see I think
- 15:27Speaker 1: that's kind of the first thing. So if that was
- 15:29Speaker 1: affecting Ryan Wingo, and based off what Steve Sarkisian said
- 15:33Speaker 1: during some questions about it, it does seem to have
- 15:36Speaker 1: impacted Wingo and obviously he got it taken care of
- 15:38Speaker 1: as soon as the season ended after the lost to
- 15:40Speaker 1: Ohio State. So if Wingo has, you know, better eye sight,
- 15:44Speaker 1: he has that chemistry with Arch Manning. And we've also
- 15:46Speaker 1: seen sark and his offense kind of use Wingo in
- 15:50Speaker 1: various ways, whether it's out of the backfield or also
- 15:52Speaker 1: just you know, your typical running routes is a wide receiver.
- 15:55Speaker 1: So I'm very blowsh on Ryan Winkle this next season
- 15:57Speaker 1: as well. No doubt, no number six for you, it's
- 16:01Speaker 1: going to.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Stay in the receiver room.
- 16:02Speaker 5: How about Demo DeAndre Moore Junior, someone who really assumed
- 16:06Speaker 5: that Jordan Whittington like role not just on the field,
- 16:10Speaker 5: but in the locker room, in his receiving room as
- 16:13Speaker 5: being the leader of that group. Right, a lot of
- 16:15Speaker 5: things that Steve Sarkijan likes to do offensively, some of
- 16:18Speaker 5: those things hinge upon having some.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Receivers who can block specifically that slot receiver, right.
- 16:24Speaker 5: And I think Demo is due for development his own
- 16:26Speaker 5: development as a receiver.
- 16:28Speaker 4: So DeAndre Moore comes.
- 16:28Speaker 1: At number six and both you know, wing Goo and
- 16:30Speaker 1: More and not participating in the spring, which which kind
- 16:33Speaker 1: of sucks for for Arch in the Texas offense. But
- 16:36Speaker 1: I think More's coming back is the most experienced, in
- 16:39Speaker 1: best better route runner in the receiver room.
- 16:42Speaker 4: That'd be fair.
- 16:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I think in terms of route runner, most experienced,
- 16:46Speaker 5: and I think just kind of you know, Ryan Wingo,
- 16:48Speaker 5: you know pixeen plays on the outside.
- 16:50Speaker 4: You haven't necessarily necessarily seen him.
- 16:51Speaker 5: Do some of the you know, those intangible little things
- 16:54Speaker 5: quote unquote little things that Jordan Whittington did when he
- 16:57Speaker 5: was here, and passed down to DeAndre.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Moore six yards to the past season more seven touchdowns,
- 17:02Speaker 1: second most on the team, only behind Matthew Golden. Felt
- 17:06Speaker 1: like outside of Matthew Golden, Moore became Quinn's favorite target.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I think back to the Vanderbilt game when he had
- 17:12Speaker 1: that incredible catch on the sideline. I love DeAndre Moore.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I think he's going to have another fantastic season. Okay,
- 17:18Speaker 1: so more we go off the board. I think are
- 17:20Speaker 1: number five.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Now, yep, and listen.
- 17:23Speaker 5: I'm a big believer that football games are one in
- 17:27Speaker 5: the trenches, so we got to get some lineman in here.
- 17:30Speaker 5: DJ Campbell at number five, the most experienced offensive lineman
- 17:34Speaker 5: returning in terms of starts, of course, he have some
- 17:36Speaker 5: veterans and Cole and Connor Robinson who have played, but
- 17:39Speaker 5: in terms of starts, DJ Campbell most veteran there.
- 17:42Speaker 4: He's a guy who I think.
- 17:43Speaker 5: When you look at you know Cam Williams's jump or
- 17:47Speaker 5: development from last year. DJ Campbell I think is another
- 17:50Speaker 5: guy who kind of lines up a road greater, a
- 17:52Speaker 5: real presence on the right side of offensive line at guard.
- 17:55Speaker 5: That in my mind, is where you're gonna running the
- 17:57Speaker 5: football behind right and I think DJ Campbell certainly is
- 18:00Speaker 5: due for a huge jump as well.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Who do you think will be next tim at right tackle?
- 18:04Speaker 2: I think it'll be Brandon Baker.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Right now, I think the leader in the clubhouse is
- 18:08Speaker 4: Brandon Baker.
- 18:08Speaker 5: We heard a lot of great things about Nick Brooks
- 18:10Speaker 5: right Trey Weisner shouted out Nick Brooks by name, but
- 18:13Speaker 5: I don't think you know, being this early in his
- 18:16Speaker 5: Texas football tenure, that'd be a tough ask.
- 18:18Speaker 4: I think Brandon Baker's liked with the right time.
- 18:20Speaker 1: We'll see early on which side of the defensive line
- 18:23Speaker 1: that start likes to run behind. But Campbell coming in
- 18:26Speaker 1: the most experienced as well. Number four, we're gonna stay
- 18:30Speaker 1: on the offensive line. Trevor Gooseby right left tackle. We
- 18:33Speaker 1: all know protecting the blind side of your quarterback. Got
- 18:36Speaker 1: to keep Arch manning upright. That's the big thing, right.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I don't care if granted Arch a tremendous athlete, we
- 18:42Speaker 1: all know what he can do.
- 18:43Speaker 5: But for a first time starter, a guy with only
- 18:45Speaker 5: two stars underneath his belt, he needs to have a
- 18:48Speaker 5: solid offensive line.
- 18:49Speaker 4: It all starts at left tackle. Trevor Gooseby, number.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Four, taking the spot of Kelvin Banks, who would be
- 18:54Speaker 1: a first round draft pick both tackles. I mean, Nan
- 18:57Speaker 1: time fittive line is being replaced, but you're gonna have
- 18:59Speaker 1: a soft, more Possban Gooseby at left tackle. You might
- 19:02Speaker 1: have a sophomore even true freshman at right tackle. Something
- 19:05Speaker 1: to keep an eye out for. Okay, number three in
- 19:08Speaker 1: the final three picks for Eric Henry, all.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Right, I'm gonna peer these two together because I went
- 19:12Speaker 5: two A and two B. Two B was Colin Simmons,
- 19:17Speaker 5: of course, hearing great things about the now sophomore Egge
- 19:20Speaker 5: Rusher that he has been a game wrecker. We saw
- 19:23Speaker 5: him be a game wrecker in his freshman season, but
- 19:26Speaker 5: you speak with players and he's taking his game to
- 19:28Speaker 5: the next levels being a game wrecker in practice and
- 19:30Speaker 5: of course, arguably depending on who you are, the best
- 19:35Speaker 5: or second best player on this defense. Linebacker Anthony Hill junior,
- 19:39Speaker 5: you talked about north of one hundred tackles, double.
- 19:42Speaker 4: Digit tackles for loss.
- 19:43Speaker 5: Would love to see him be a guy who can
- 19:45Speaker 5: be double digit tackle for loss and double digit sacks right,
- 19:48Speaker 5: maybe get a few interceptions in there. We've seen him,
- 19:50Speaker 5: you know, be a real ballhawk. Stepped up his game
- 19:53Speaker 5: from being just a guy who was running around making
- 19:55Speaker 5: plays and being a true linebacker. Right, if he can
- 19:58Speaker 5: take his game to the next level, be that all
- 19:59Speaker 5: around linebacker, I think that's huge.
- 20:02Speaker 4: For Texas's defense. So to be Colin Simmons to a
- 20:05Speaker 4: Anthony Hill.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Junior without a doubt, I think you're spot on there.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I think back to the Georgia game, the first Georgia
- 20:10Speaker 1: game in Austin, Jalen Walker and Dalen Everett, who I
- 20:14Speaker 1: thought I have to leave in that game. I thought, Okay,
- 20:15Speaker 1: those are the two best linebackers in the country, and
- 20:17Speaker 1: it's because of their ability to rush the passer and
- 20:20Speaker 1: get to Quinn yours in arch Manning. We already know
- 20:24Speaker 1: what Colin Simmons can do. He can do that, but
- 20:26Speaker 1: if he can take a next step like Jyllen Walker
- 20:29Speaker 1: and have a fantastic year, this Texas defense can be
- 20:32Speaker 1: absolutely scary in twenty twenty five and also takes some
- 20:35Speaker 1: pressure off the secondary. Okay, so Simmons and Anthony Hill
- 20:38Speaker 1: are gone. Who is your most important player for Texas football?
- 20:41Speaker 1: And I got a feeling it's not Trey Owens, no disrespect,
- 20:47Speaker 1: this is.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Listen, no justice, But the Trey Owens, who certainly serves
- 20:50Speaker 5: a valuable role if he is going to be the
- 20:52Speaker 5: QB too. Because cam Real Quick Texas and Steve Sarkasan's tenure,
- 20:56Speaker 5: they have not had a quarterback finish the entire year
- 20:58Speaker 5: getting banged up, right, But knock on wood on, Ivy
- 21:01Speaker 5: would to knock.
- 21:02Speaker 4: On here, number one.
- 21:03Speaker 5: You already know what is number one in your heart's
- 21:05Speaker 5: number sixteen on your roster, arch Manning.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Everything begins and ends with quarterback play. Arch Manning. I
- 21:13Speaker 4: think again, the thing with this team Cam is it's
- 21:16Speaker 4: there's a measure.
- 21:17Speaker 5: Of youth, but you don't feel like it's youth that
- 21:21Speaker 5: you're like, all right, we don't know what we have
- 21:24Speaker 5: if everything falls into place. No, you feel real optimistic
- 21:27Speaker 5: about the youth on this football team, right because you've
- 21:29Speaker 5: seen glimpses of it with Trevor Gooseby getting a couple starts,
- 21:32Speaker 5: glimpses of it with arch Manning getting a couple starts.
- 21:34Speaker 5: So arch Manning, not necessarily if, but you expect him
- 21:39Speaker 5: to take the next step in his development, and it
- 21:42Speaker 5: might not be Week one of Ohio State.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Right, that's a tough ask.
- 21:45Speaker 5: But over fourteen fifteen games in a regular season and
- 21:48Speaker 5: possibly the SEC title game. I think arch Manning is
- 21:50Speaker 5: going to be one of the top two or three
- 21:52Speaker 5: quarterbacks in the SEC.
- 21:53Speaker 2: So arche betting number one for you. A couple of
- 21:55Speaker 2: names you didn't get too.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I want to get your thoughts on for ten most
- 21:58Speaker 1: important players, so we'll call these maybe honorable mentions. One
- 22:02Speaker 1: I had written down with CJ. Baxter, who did not
- 22:03Speaker 1: play last season. Of course, was injured throughout the season,
- 22:06Speaker 1: but remember after twenty twenty three he was the second
- 22:09Speaker 1: leading rusher behind Jonathan Brook six hundred and eighty yards,
- 22:13Speaker 1: five touchdowns, had a couple costly fumbles against Washington the
- 22:17Speaker 1: collastiontball playoff. But I think going into this past season
- 22:20Speaker 1: thought he was going to be the guy. Of course
- 22:23Speaker 1: gets injured. I think Texas really missed an in between
- 22:27Speaker 1: the tackles type runner and I think CJ. Baxscher will
- 22:29Speaker 1: fill that void. And I think a lot of Texas
- 22:31Speaker 1: fans may have forgotten about him. But I think with
- 22:33Speaker 1: Wisner and now CJ. Baxter returning, this could be a
- 22:37Speaker 1: really profitable one to two punch for Steve Sarkija, especially
- 22:41Speaker 1: with you know, a quarterback in arch Manning. I know
- 22:42Speaker 1: everyone's excited about Arts, but you know he does not
- 22:45Speaker 1: have the experience that a lot of starting quarterbacks have.
- 22:47Speaker 2: So having a capable running back group will be huge.
- 22:50Speaker 2: And if c J.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Baxter can be healthy, as start calls him C four,
- 22:53Speaker 1: I feel like CJ. Baxter can be a huge, huge
- 22:57Speaker 1: offensive player for Texas this next season him.
- 23:00Speaker 4: I agree with you. You know when you look at CJ.
- 23:04Speaker 5: And even Christian Clark too, right, and Steve kind of
- 23:06Speaker 5: alluded to it the other day. Modern medicine has guys
- 23:09Speaker 5: recovering faster than ever, but it's not normal to recover
- 23:13Speaker 5: from an achilles R. I remember in Achilles used to
- 23:14Speaker 5: be an injury that you could potentially end your career.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Done with CJ. Baxter? Yeah, CJ. Baxs will come back
- 23:20Speaker 4: from the knee.
- 23:21Speaker 5: I'm still taking that weight and see approach with him,
- 23:23Speaker 5: but I would agree with you right if CJ.
- 23:25Speaker 4: We'll see where he is in fall.
- 23:27Speaker 5: He's still talking about a kid who was a number
- 23:28Speaker 5: one overall recruit running back recruit in his class, a
- 23:31Speaker 5: dynamic runner.
- 23:32Speaker 4: I think was poised to do big things last year
- 23:34Speaker 4: before the injuries.
- 23:34Speaker 3: I agree.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And then one other one for you here, chilling Gilbot.
- 23:38Speaker 1: He was someone that mckaman he plays a freshman, real
- 23:41Speaker 1: excited about him, but just dealt with various injuries.
- 23:44Speaker 2: He played a little bit last season.
- 23:45Speaker 1: I think some people were were using to transfer out,
- 23:47Speaker 1: But the second half of the year, I thought we
- 23:49Speaker 1: saw a lot more Gilbo on the field, and I
- 23:51Speaker 1: think he looked a lot more confident with PK. Of course,
- 23:55Speaker 1: new DB's coach with Joseph Gone so different staff. But
- 23:59Speaker 1: we heard Sart talk about him playing at cornerback this
- 24:02Speaker 1: season's upcoming season with him and Maddy Muhammad and then
- 24:06Speaker 1: Jelani McDonald. Of course, Kobe Black heard a lot of
- 24:09Speaker 1: good things about Warren Roberson. I think this cornerback groom
- 24:12Speaker 1: could be very good, but I think Gilbo will stand
- 24:14Speaker 1: out as a player that's going to have a very
- 24:16Speaker 1: good season. What do you think about Gilbol this year
- 24:18Speaker 1: in his role in the defense, because tax is going
- 24:20Speaker 1: to have to rely on somebody with mcouba and Johnny
- 24:23Speaker 1: Barron no longer on the team.
- 24:25Speaker 5: Yeah, you talk about some of the shifting dynamics of
- 24:28Speaker 5: that secondary and rool course starts with the coaches.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Mark Orfey coming in from Rutgers Dwayne A. Keene.
- 24:33Speaker 5: Of course, coming back to the forty acres, I would
- 24:36Speaker 5: agree with you. It's funny, you know, well, I guess
- 24:38Speaker 5: I'll start with Jalen first, right, if he is truly
- 24:41Speaker 5: as Steve Starkejan said, going to make the shift to
- 24:44Speaker 5: outside corner. That's where it gets interesting to me, because
- 24:47Speaker 5: you know the value the star role has in PK system,
- 24:50Speaker 5: as they say, it kind of ties the front end
- 24:52Speaker 5: and back end together. The name that I had is
- 24:55Speaker 5: number eleven or just you know, kind of guy who
- 24:57Speaker 5: was honorable mention is Maddy Muhammad, And I think it's
- 25:00Speaker 5: kind of you know, you can flip a coin.
- 25:02Speaker 4: Right whether it's Manny or Jalen Gilbert.
- 25:04Speaker 5: Because both of those guys are going to have huge
- 25:06Speaker 5: responsibilities on the outside. The reason I went with many
- 25:09Speaker 5: is I think that again kind of playing into the
- 25:11Speaker 5: theme of notlessly boom.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Or bus, but just waiting to see someone tap into
- 25:16Speaker 4: that potential.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Manny Muhammad is a guy who you fell last year, okay,
- 25:20Speaker 5: coming off of his freshman year, got a lot of
- 25:21Speaker 5: playing time. Want to see where he went as a sophomore.
- 25:25Speaker 5: A little bit overshadowed by Jade Baron right. And of
- 25:27Speaker 5: course when you're playing opposite such a stud cornerback, you're
- 25:31Speaker 5: going to be the guy who is targeted so many
- 25:32Speaker 5: had you know, a couple personal it's not personal fouls,
- 25:35Speaker 5: a couple of pass interferences, you know, a couple of
- 25:37Speaker 5: defensive holdings. I think Manny's due for again, kind of
- 25:41Speaker 5: that breakout year where he kind of taps into his ceiling, right,
- 25:44Speaker 5: So I'm gonna win many over Gilbot.
- 25:46Speaker 1: But again, I think it's a flip of a coin.
- 25:47Speaker 1: You can't go wrong either way. Last one for you,
- 25:49Speaker 1: and this is kind of a bonus round here. Who
- 25:52Speaker 1: is maybe a true freshman or transfer coming in that
- 25:56Speaker 1: you think is going to have a big impact coming
- 25:58Speaker 1: up this next season.
- 26:00Speaker 4: I'm going to go with two transfers.
- 26:02Speaker 5: The area that I didn't address, you know me, Like
- 26:05Speaker 5: I said, I think the wins and championships are built
- 26:08Speaker 5: in the interior. Didn't mention any interior defensive linemen. Here
- 26:11Speaker 5: are two transfers, right. Travis Shaw just wrote this. It's
- 26:14Speaker 5: up today on Horns twenty four to seven dot com.
- 26:16Speaker 5: Welcome to the forty acre series where I'm previewing and
- 26:19Speaker 5: kind of giving some insight into the five transfers who
- 26:21Speaker 5: are here in spring Shaw dealing with a knee injury.
- 26:24Speaker 5: Back to his time in North Carolina camp. You know,
- 26:27Speaker 5: five star recruit, number twelve overall recruit in the nation,
- 26:30Speaker 5: number one in the state of North Carolina, doesn't necessarily
- 26:33Speaker 5: work on his first two years had it, you know,
- 26:35Speaker 5: a little bit of off field incident. Was struggling with
- 26:37Speaker 5: his weight as well. Definitely had to mature a little bit.
- 26:40Speaker 5: If Kenny Baker, someone who is known for getting transfers,
- 26:43Speaker 5: getting the most out of guys who maybe have had
- 26:45Speaker 5: a couple stops and give them the tools to succeed.
- 26:48Speaker 5: If he can get the most out of him, I
- 26:50Speaker 5: think that'd be key. And also Colbrovar the other or
- 26:53Speaker 5: one of three defensive tackles. But Coldbrivard transferring in from
- 26:56Speaker 5: Purdue has all the makings of a classic run stuffer
- 27:00Speaker 5: six three three three fifty two is actually where he's
- 27:04Speaker 5: weighing in nineteen pounds heavier than where he was at Perdue.
- 27:07Speaker 5: But if he can fill that Bill Norton like role,
- 27:09Speaker 5: I think those two are huge for Texas.
- 27:11Speaker 2: He's Eric Henry from Horns two four seven.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Check out its work at Horns two four seven dot
- 27:15Speaker 1: com and follow him on Twitter at Eric c Henry Underscore.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Eric, I hope your AC gets fixed next time I
- 27:22Speaker 2: talk to you.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Cam always a player to hop on which you appreciate
- 27:25Speaker 4: you having me on my man.
- 27:26Speaker 2: I've men We'll see you around.
- 27:27Speaker 1: That's Eric Henry from Horns two four seven his top
- 27:30Speaker 1: ten most important players. I bet you can guess number one,
- 27:33Speaker 1: but go back and listen if you missed it. Two
- 27:36Speaker 1: through ten very important for Texas football in twenty twenty five.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Some new names to learn as Texas looks to return
- 27:43Speaker 1: to the College Football Playoff for their third straight season
- 27:46Speaker 1: under Steve Sarkesian. Okay, we're through the first two segments.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Up next, it's Friday, and it's an inconceivable time. That
- 27:54Speaker 1: means we travel to the more flaccid, the lower forty
- 27:57Speaker 1: eight states. First, we're gonna stop in Augusta, Origia before
- 28:00Speaker 1: traveling to Florida. That's up next here as The Craigway
- 28:03Speaker 1: Show continues Our one on this Fire Me Up Friday
- 28:07Speaker 1: on The Craigway Show. Cameron Parker with you on this
- 28:10Speaker 1: Fire Me Up Friday. Glad to have you with us,
- 28:11Speaker 1: whether you're listening on the Free iHeart radio app or
- 28:16Speaker 1: watching us on our YouTube live stream Glad to have
- 28:18Speaker 1: you in. Craig Way is currently in Lexington, Kentucky as
- 28:22Speaker 1: in Number two Texas Longhorge take on the Kentucky Wildcats
- 28:26Speaker 1: at Kentucky Browd Park and Craig Way and Keith Morlin
- 28:30Speaker 1: will have the call starting tonight five fifteen airtime. You
- 28:33Speaker 1: can hear on one O three to one FM, Austin's
- 28:37Speaker 1: eighty station of course always free on the iHeart radio app,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and right now both Craig and Keith joined me in. Guys,
- 28:43Speaker 1: I don't know if you listened to the first hour
- 28:45Speaker 1: of the show, but we've had white chocolate references, we've
- 28:49Speaker 1: had sexy chocolate references. So between you and Keith, which
- 28:52Speaker 1: one of you would be more likely to have the
- 28:54Speaker 1: white chocolate nickname and the other one that had the
- 28:56Speaker 1: sexy chocolate nickname.
- 28:58Speaker 6: Well, I think both of us would be free easing
- 29:00Speaker 6: chocolate today. From where we stand in Lexing, Kentucky, let
- 29:04Speaker 6: me tell you it's forty eight degrees on the thermometer
- 29:09Speaker 6: here in Lexington under overcast skies. They had rained this morning.
- 29:13Speaker 6: The team was able to get into full workout last
- 29:16Speaker 6: night before some showers arrived, and then it rained off
- 29:19Speaker 6: and on overnight and had a good shower this morning.
- 29:22Speaker 6: It's forty eight degrees with the wind blowing steadily out
- 29:25Speaker 6: of the north at fifteen miles per hour. So the
- 29:27Speaker 6: wind chill right now, Cameron Parker here at Kentucky Proud
- 29:31Speaker 6: Park in Lexington is thirty eight degrees. That's the wind chill.
- 29:35Speaker 6: That's why it sounds like we're in a studio and
- 29:38Speaker 6: out at the ballpark. We have the windows closed right
- 29:40Speaker 6: now because it's because it's rather chilly and we're both
- 29:45Speaker 6: pretty bundled up, which brings us.
- 29:46Speaker 7: To, Yeah, I got everything I brought with me on
- 29:49Speaker 7: and never my name Cameron would ever be associated with
- 29:53Speaker 7: anything sexy. So let's just start with those two.
- 29:56Speaker 2: I don't know about that. I mean, come on, Keith, wea.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Right, I trust me, So that that should answer your question.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Well, let me ask you guys this.
- 30:06Speaker 1: So Texas Baseball eleven to one, of course, tight to
- 30:08Speaker 1: top the SEC with Arkansas up the number two in
- 30:10Speaker 1: the standings under Jim Slaunschnegele his first season in Austin,
- 30:14Speaker 1: and then the big story has been the pitching currently
- 30:17Speaker 1: lead the conference with the lowest ERA three point zero
- 30:20Speaker 1: three and looking at last year they were almost at
- 30:23Speaker 1: five A four point nine to one e R. So
- 30:25Speaker 1: I want to ask you guys, what has been the
- 30:28Speaker 1: biggest difference allowing the Texas pitchers to lower this era,
- 30:31Speaker 1: Because when you think about it, they've had four different
- 30:34Speaker 1: pitching coaches in the last four years, a guy like
- 30:36Speaker 1: Luke Harrison's had a different coach come in every single year.
- 30:39Speaker 1: But something is clicking between Jim Slashnegele and Max Wiener.
- 30:44Speaker 6: I'll start off and then I'll let Keith expound on it.
- 30:47Speaker 6: I think you start at the alpha and the omega,
- 30:49Speaker 6: the alpha being the guy who gets the ball tonight,
- 30:51Speaker 6: Jared Spencer with whether he's done, he's got a three
- 30:54Speaker 6: two oho RA and then they may go on the
- 30:58Speaker 6: opposite end of it, obviously is still and Valantis with
- 31:01Speaker 6: what he's done to close out games. In between, there
- 31:04Speaker 6: have been guys, both starters and relievers who have been
- 31:07Speaker 6: able to fill in the gaps and do that.
- 31:10Speaker 2: And Keith one of the things is that at least.
- 31:12Speaker 6: They've been able to get guys to fill in spots
- 31:17Speaker 6: when they needed to get some outs here and there.
- 31:19Speaker 6: Whether it's a you know, an Andre to Plantier or
- 31:23Speaker 6: Max Grubbs or whoever it might be. They've been able
- 31:26Speaker 6: to get some guys to come in in key situations
- 31:29Speaker 6: and get some outs. And then obviously in the third
- 31:32Speaker 6: starter who started as a reliever, rugariohas who we'll get
- 31:36Speaker 6: to start on Sunday.
- 31:37Speaker 7: Yeah, guys, there's things that jump off the page at
- 31:40Speaker 7: meet that. I'm an old ball player. I'm not as
- 31:43Speaker 7: big an analyto as analyzing things as much doing, but
- 31:47Speaker 7: I do have one term that I always shoop, and
- 31:50Speaker 7: that's a number of base runners per inning.
- 31:52Speaker 3: That's something I really look at.
- 31:53Speaker 7: And when you add Texas as numbers that I was
- 31:56Speaker 7: doing that just as you guys were talking right there,
- 32:00Speaker 7: Xus has allowed three hundred and fifty three base runners
- 32:02Speaker 7: this season and two hundred and ten innings of work.
- 32:05Speaker 7: That's about one point six base runners for any between
- 32:08Speaker 7: hot walks, hit batters and hits. You turn around on
- 32:13Speaker 7: the other side, you look at Kentucky. They come in
- 32:16Speaker 7: in thirty games, They've allowed nearly five hundred and eight
- 32:20Speaker 7: total batters to reach first base or to reach base,
- 32:23Speaker 7: So that's less than one hundred and fifty base runners
- 32:27Speaker 7: that Kentucky has so pitching the good part of what's
- 32:31Speaker 7: going on in pitches. Not only have they limited the hits,
- 32:33Speaker 7: they've limited the opportunity for the opponents to score without
- 32:36Speaker 7: the benefit of a base hit.
- 32:38Speaker 6: And having said all that, cam Texas is going to
- 32:41Speaker 6: take on a Kentucky team that, while is five and
- 32:44Speaker 6: seven in SEC play, has had the lead in all
- 32:48Speaker 6: twelve games in conference play and has lost its last
- 32:54Speaker 6: five conference games by a grand total of seven runs,
- 32:57Speaker 6: one run, one run, two runs, two runs in one run.
- 33:00Speaker 6: So they've been in ball games. During the ball game
- 33:02Speaker 6: the other night with Louisville, they'd lost a very similarity
- 33:04Speaker 6: to how Texas lost to Louisville, and in the season opener,
- 33:07Speaker 6: both teams were tied to to going in the next innings,
- 33:10Speaker 6: Kentucky scored in the top of the tent, just like
- 33:12Speaker 6: Texas did in that game at Arlington against Louisville, and
- 33:15Speaker 6: Louisville scored two in the bottom of the tent, just
- 33:16Speaker 6: like they did in Arlington. So it's a team that's
- 33:19Speaker 6: been very, very close. And talking with Darren Heddrick, their
- 33:25Speaker 6: play by play voice, he said all of the things
- 33:27Speaker 6: that went right last year when they had that fifteen
- 33:29Speaker 6: and oh run in SEC play all of those things,
- 33:34Speaker 6: you know, he said, it's the odds catching up to
- 33:36Speaker 6: you on some of the stuff that hasn't done.
- 33:38Speaker 2: And of course they graduated some good players as well.
- 33:40Speaker 1: I think it was Ethan Mendoza last week before the
- 33:42Speaker 1: Georgia series was asked about their midweek loss to Texas
- 33:47Speaker 1: State and they had dropped win early in the season
- 33:49Speaker 1: on Tuesday night, and Ethan was asked to that, like,
- 33:51Speaker 1: you know, help you guys prepare for a weekend like this,
- 33:54Speaker 1: you lose a non conference geame midweek, to make sure
- 33:57Speaker 1: you don't lose in the weekend. And I think Ethan said,
- 33:59Speaker 1: I don't even remember we played two weeks ago. Is
- 34:02Speaker 1: that kind of you know, maybe some up how this
- 34:04Speaker 1: baseball team is at mentally and why they've been able
- 34:07Speaker 1: to play so well every game in eleven to one,
- 34:09Speaker 1: Because I don't think a lot of people expected him
- 34:10Speaker 1: to be tied for first this deep into the SEC play.
- 34:14Speaker 7: Well, I expected him to be pretty good. I mean,
- 34:17Speaker 7: this is be honest, as we started the season and
- 34:19Speaker 7: you weren't sure what's happening. Now to be eleven and
- 34:22Speaker 7: one is a surprise when you've had down two of
- 34:25Speaker 7: their best offensive players and two of the better offensive
- 34:28Speaker 7: players in the SEC. And when you lose the ranting
- 34:30Speaker 7: Big twelve player of the year and very well maybe
- 34:33Speaker 7: for the season. We don't know the numbers on that yet.
- 34:36Speaker 7: It's not my job to speculate on that. But on
- 34:39Speaker 7: the other side you got Adrian and then Max Belue.
- 34:41Speaker 7: Then on the other side you got a Rod which
- 34:43Speaker 7: should start off like a house on a fire, and
- 34:45Speaker 7: there's no question watching his approach, he's an outstanding offensive player.
- 34:50Speaker 7: And you know, to be eleven and one and lose
- 34:53Speaker 7: two cogs, and I'm talking about guys that are in
- 34:56Speaker 7: the meat of your order, you know, two, three, four, five,
- 34:59Speaker 7: it's hard to replace those guys that nixt man up mentality.
- 35:02Speaker 7: Sometimes it doesn't work. But Texas has done a great
- 35:05Speaker 7: job of overcome that. And a lot of it is
- 35:07Speaker 7: like Craig was talking about, it's been pitching there. It's
- 35:10Speaker 7: been the fact that they haven't had to go chase
- 35:13Speaker 7: a bunch of runs, they haven't had to have that
- 35:15Speaker 7: bigger couple innings to come back in a ball game
- 35:17Speaker 7: because the pitching has been so good.
- 35:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm looking at this weekend with Georgia playing Arkansas
- 35:23Speaker 1: three game series and ath and the Bulldogs trying to
- 35:26Speaker 1: respond after being sweat But you know there's a chance,
- 35:28Speaker 1: Craig that if Texas takes care of business this weekend
- 35:31Speaker 1: in Lexington against a tough Wildcat team, they could be
- 35:34Speaker 1: atop the SEC conference. And we heard Jim's lost. It
- 35:37Speaker 1: will talk about how important it is for Texas to
- 35:39Speaker 1: get to that fifteen sixteen wins because likely you're a
- 35:43Speaker 1: top four team in the SEC, which means you have
- 35:45Speaker 1: the first two days off in the conference tournament, but
- 35:48Speaker 1: also a really good chance you're going to be hosting.
- 35:50Speaker 6: A regional Yeah, everything spills into the next thing. It's
- 35:55Speaker 6: a trickle down for them. So sitting at eleven in
- 35:58Speaker 6: one and you look at what they still have to
- 36:00Speaker 6: come now. They still have some challenging series the next
- 36:03Speaker 6: tour at home a very good Auburn team, and then
- 36:06Speaker 6: Texas A and M.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Seems to be waking up now.
- 36:08Speaker 6: They've won three straight SEC games now, including that walk
- 36:11Speaker 6: off last night in ten innings over South Carolina. Will
- 36:14Speaker 6: continue to see how the Aggies do for the next
- 36:16Speaker 6: two weekends are Auburn and then Texas A and M,
- 36:19Speaker 6: and then many are already pointing to what could be
- 36:22Speaker 6: a big showdown series in Fayetteville against art Kansas, currently
- 36:25Speaker 6: the number one and number two teams in the country.
- 36:27Speaker 6: Now a lot can change between now and then, but
- 36:28Speaker 6: even then, after that, they have Florida at home on
- 36:32Speaker 6: Senior weekend and then they finish at Oklahoma. But if
- 36:35Speaker 6: they here, they are approaching basically the halfway point of
- 36:40Speaker 6: conference play. If they're able to get into I'll even
- 36:45Speaker 6: say eighteen conference wins at that point, because they've got
- 36:47Speaker 6: eleven right now. If you're talking at eighteen conference wins,
- 36:52Speaker 6: and who knows, maybe even more than yes, I think
- 36:55Speaker 6: you're in the top four in the SEC. And with
- 36:57Speaker 6: the new conference tournament format, the top four seeds get
- 37:00Speaker 6: a double by and they don't play until the quarter found.
- 37:03Speaker 6: Its just like the men's basketball tournament the women's basketball tournament.
- 37:06Speaker 6: Even if you finish in the top eight, you get
- 37:07Speaker 6: a first day by. But if you can get that,
- 37:10Speaker 6: if you get the double bye, you only need to
- 37:12Speaker 6: win three games. You only need three starting pitchers to
- 37:15Speaker 6: try to win that conference tournament. And even then, at
- 37:17Speaker 6: that point, Keith, you're you're in the conversation. First of all,
- 37:21Speaker 6: you're almost a lock to be a regional host at
- 37:23Speaker 6: that point, and then you're in the conversation to be
- 37:25Speaker 6: a national seed.
- 37:26Speaker 7: Yeah, and it but it's so much different than the
- 37:28Speaker 7: guys adding Texas and Oklahoma this year just look at
- 37:33Speaker 7: the league has not had this type of separation. We
- 37:36Speaker 7: I mean, you got two teams eleven and one, and
- 37:40Speaker 7: this weekend you had a team that did not have
- 37:42Speaker 7: a conference win. You had another one that only got
- 37:44Speaker 7: two conference win and they're playing each other guy that
- 37:46Speaker 7: had two and a guy that had three. Now Aggie's
- 37:49Speaker 7: won last night, so they've improved on that sort. So
- 37:51Speaker 7: we've had we've got a real big swing. And I
- 37:54Speaker 7: went back this week, you know, just getting ready, I
- 37:57Speaker 7: went back to this point.
- 37:58Speaker 3: Last year.
- 37:59Speaker 7: You know, difference from first to last was only six games. Yeah,
- 38:03Speaker 7: it's a lot different. It's a third world country this year.
- 38:05Speaker 4: It is.
- 38:05Speaker 7: The conference is pretty spread out. It's more top heavy
- 38:10Speaker 7: than we've ever seen it. I guess it's the best
- 38:11Speaker 7: way to put it.
- 38:12Speaker 6: Yeah, and tour that end, you brought up Oklahoma, and
- 38:15Speaker 6: Oklahoma started well enough and they have been struggling of late,
- 38:17Speaker 6: and they got swept at home by LSU last week
- 38:19Speaker 6: and then they got pounded at home by Dallas Baptists,
- 38:22Speaker 6: and they've got Vanderbilt at home this weekend, and it's
- 38:25Speaker 6: almost really critical for them to try to win that
- 38:27Speaker 6: series just to kind of get back into the middle
- 38:30Speaker 6: part of the pack and stay in the middle part
- 38:32Speaker 6: of the pack in conference play. But there's a big,
- 38:34Speaker 6: big series going on this weekend, and every series other
- 38:39Speaker 6: than Florida, Missouri A and M South Carolina and this
- 38:43Speaker 6: one is a head to head ranked matchup, all of
- 38:47Speaker 6: the other conference series are head to head matchups between
- 38:51Speaker 6: ranked teams. So yeah, it's a big series here. It's
- 38:54Speaker 6: a big series all around the league.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Camp last thing for you, guys, Keith on Saturday, last
- 38:59Speaker 1: Saturday against Georgia, nineteen seventy five Texas Baseball team national
- 39:03Speaker 1: champions guys were honored on the field. I know you
- 39:07Speaker 1: had some family obligations to attend to afterwards, but what
- 39:11Speaker 1: did that weekend mean for you to be able to
- 39:12Speaker 1: be reunited with your teammates and for the team to
- 39:15Speaker 1: be honored last Saturday.
- 39:16Speaker 7: Well, the twenty six guys that were on the roster,
- 39:19Speaker 7: and nineteen of them were able to attend. That was
- 39:22Speaker 7: really cool. Everybody is still with us. That's one of
- 39:25Speaker 7: the things that you always worry about. Now there's some
- 39:27Speaker 7: guys that have overcome a few things to still be
- 39:30Speaker 7: with us, including the first present company included. So but
- 39:35Speaker 7: it is such an honor to see those guys and
- 39:38Speaker 7: to be a part the first time people look at
- 39:41Speaker 7: the Dish and now it's a lot different ballpark than
- 39:43Speaker 7: it was when we first opened it in nineteen seventy five.
- 39:46Speaker 3: But to be a part of a group that not
- 39:48Speaker 3: only opened up.
- 39:49Speaker 7: What was the taj Mahal of college baseball at the time,
- 39:52Speaker 7: they were nothing like it anywhere else in the country,
- 39:55Speaker 7: and then to go on to win go you know,
- 39:57Speaker 7: fifty six and six and win a National chairampionship claimed
- 40:00Speaker 7: the first one ever for coach Cliff Goffs's and it
- 40:04Speaker 7: was a heck of an honor. It was great to
- 40:05Speaker 7: see all those guys back together, and it was interesting
- 40:08Speaker 7: we had all three of our starting pitchers all threw
- 40:11Speaker 7: strikes off the mound if you remember, on the and
- 40:14Speaker 7: the opening pitch. That's pretty cool that they could all
- 40:17Speaker 7: get it up there and it's seventy years old and
- 40:19Speaker 7: get it to home plate and throw strikes with it.
- 40:21Speaker 6: Not bad and by the way, Cam, you contrasted to
- 40:24Speaker 6: this ballpark. This is a nice ballpark, This Kentucky prow
- 40:27Speaker 6: Park where they play nice ballpark.
- 40:30Speaker 2: It's seven years old. Wow, that's it.
- 40:32Speaker 6: It's a grand total of seventy. They used to play
- 40:35Speaker 6: a place called the Cliff over the old ballpark. But
- 40:37Speaker 6: this is seven years old and it is very fan friendly.
- 40:41Speaker 6: It's just the weather's not very friendly today. Hopefully it'll
- 40:44Speaker 6: be a little more friend Tomorrow and Sunday are supposed
- 40:47Speaker 6: to be better, even sunny, with temperatures in the mid
- 40:51Speaker 6: to upper fifties, maybe even up to sixty by Sunday.
- 40:55Speaker 6: But it's not going to be a real comfortable We
- 40:57Speaker 6: can climateto logically speak can put it that way.
- 41:00Speaker 1: We all if you guys can stay warm, and if not,
- 41:02Speaker 1: maybe the Texas bats can heap.
- 41:04Speaker 6: Up he hate you know what. You know what else
- 41:06Speaker 6: we did, Cam? We went to cookout today, ye lunch, first.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Time, Keith, first time been there before.
- 41:11Speaker 3: First time. Well, I've had pulled pork before. Trust me.
- 41:14Speaker 7: I've worked with Craig Way for thirty years, so you
- 41:17Speaker 7: know that he's taking me to a lot of good barbecue.
- 41:19Speaker 7: So and I do like North Carolina what I call
- 41:23Speaker 7: North Carolina barbecue.
- 41:24Speaker 3: So it was good.
- 41:25Speaker 7: I had a great sandwich and I had a corny dog.
- 41:28Speaker 7: Believe it or not, I didn't know they had a
- 41:29Speaker 7: corny dog. Had to go back and order one. She
- 41:32Speaker 7: went back and ordered one.
- 41:33Speaker 1: I had the slaw dog and it was it was
- 41:36Speaker 1: and a cheerwine obviously good for a soft drink. See now, Keith,
- 41:40Speaker 1: cookout tastes better even at three am. So if the
- 41:43Speaker 1: game goes long tonight, then you know where they go.
- 41:45Speaker 7: Yeah, we found that out, and sometimes these games we
- 41:49Speaker 7: have no idea. That's the one thing about baseball. There
- 41:51Speaker 7: is no time clock. Well, yes there is. There's a
- 41:53Speaker 7: twenty second clock.
- 41:54Speaker 6: We just hadn't figured day and got all that worked
- 41:56Speaker 6: out with a pitch clock. Yet otherwise it's it's it's
- 41:59Speaker 6: it's a very timeless game. Well, hey, looking forward to
- 42:02Speaker 6: tonight's call on the weekend as well. Thanks for stopping by, guys,
- 42:05Speaker 6: appreciate it. Thanks Cam, we'll see you on Monday.
- 42:07Speaker 1: We'll see you all right, Craig Way and Keith Warn
- 42:09Speaker 1: Member airtime today five point fifteen pm on one of
- 42:12Speaker 1: three one Austin's eighty Station, Texas and Kentucky. More to
- 42:17Speaker 1: come here, hour number two of The Creig Way Show,
- 42:18Speaker 1: including Kevin Robbins, golf author and professor, stops by to
- 42:22Speaker 1: talk about Scottie Scheffler as mister Scheffler chases green jacket
- 42:26Speaker 1: number three. That's up next. You're on the Fire Me
- 42:29Speaker 1: Up Friday. You're listening on the free iHeartRadio app. Welcome
- 42:36Speaker 1: back to The Craig Way Show and the Voice of
- 42:38Speaker 1: the Longhorns Craig Way.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Follow Craig on social media at Horn Voice. Well, if
- 42:47Speaker 2: you're like me, you've heard the Master's theme song a
- 42:51Speaker 2: million times this weekend or this week.
- 42:54Speaker 1: As we're on day two the twenty twenty five Masters
- 42:58Speaker 1: Golf Tournament, Justin Rose shot lead over Bryce in the
- 43:01Speaker 1: Shambo and was trying to think of who we could
- 43:05Speaker 1: talk to, who could bring on the help talk golf
- 43:07Speaker 1: and can't think of anyone better than Kevin Robbins, golf
- 43:11Speaker 1: author and professor of the University of Texas at Austin.
- 43:14Speaker 2: And Kevin so happy to have you on. Glad we
- 43:16Speaker 2: could do this, Thanks for stopping by.
- 43:19Speaker 8: Happy Friday, Happy Masters Friday, Cameron.
- 43:22Speaker 2: So, first off, let's get to Scotti Scheffer.
- 43:24Speaker 1: You had a great piece in Texas Monthly dot Com
- 43:27Speaker 1: on the April cover issue twenty twenty five and encourage
- 43:30Speaker 1: everyone to check out. And it was a fantastic piece
- 43:33Speaker 1: in kind of uncovering Scotty Scheffler in his rise to
- 43:37Speaker 1: where he's at right now with the world's best golfers,
- 43:40Speaker 1: if not the best golfer. In trying to understand what
- 43:44Speaker 1: makes him such a good golfer. You could talk about
- 43:46Speaker 1: his power, his ball striking, but from visiting with him
- 43:51Speaker 1: a couple months ago, in trying to explain it in
- 43:54Speaker 1: the simple terms, which is probably hard to do, what
- 43:57Speaker 1: makes Scotty Scheffler so good.
- 44:02Speaker 4: Well, the answer is everything there.
- 44:06Speaker 8: Nobody does nobody, nobody has the the same level of
- 44:11Speaker 8: skill in every part of the game than he does.
- 44:14Speaker 6: Uh.
- 44:15Speaker 4: And a lot of it's physical, but a lot of
- 44:18Speaker 4: it's mental too. And uh, he's just even he.
- 44:24Speaker 8: He expressed to me time and again that he doesn't
- 44:29Speaker 8: think about the future and he doesn't think about the past.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Uh.
- 44:33Speaker 4: Maybe you know, maybe that's not I that would be
- 44:38Speaker 4: impossible to not and he we know he dwells on
- 44:42Speaker 4: mistakes and failures. Uh.
- 44:44Speaker 8: And it's the only human to to dream about the future.
- 44:49Speaker 8: But I think maybe he does a really good job
- 44:51Speaker 8: of staying in that middle and in that present moment
- 44:56Speaker 8: better than most of us can.
- 44:58Speaker 6: Uh.
- 44:58Speaker 8: It's what he's trained his mind to do, and I
- 45:00Speaker 8: think his mind probably was before he tried to do
- 45:06Speaker 8: this to stay in the presence so much, he had
- 45:10Speaker 8: the kind of mind that could do that.
- 45:13Speaker 4: I just think, you know, he's unflappable, and.
- 45:16Speaker 8: When you add the skill set that he has on
- 45:19Speaker 8: the golf course, when he's playing even his B level golf,
- 45:23Speaker 8: he's pretty unbeatable.
- 45:25Speaker 1: What makes him play so well at Augusta He's currently
- 45:28Speaker 1: five under par for the tournament, sixty eight. Yesterday looked
- 45:32Speaker 1: unflappable in the first round, four bird, he's zero Bogie's
- 45:36Speaker 1: the type of golf you need to be able to
- 45:37Speaker 1: play to win at this tournament. He's trying to go
- 45:40Speaker 1: back to back. Only three other golfers have done that before.
- 45:42Speaker 1: He's in a good spot here. What is it about
- 45:46Speaker 1: his mentality and his game that sets up so well
- 45:48Speaker 1: for Augusta National?
- 45:50Speaker 4: Well, Augusta National is a hard golf course.
- 45:54Speaker 8: It's a golf course that separates the field, and I
- 45:58Speaker 8: think in that respect, Cameron, he's a lot like Jack
- 46:01Speaker 8: was in his prime, a lot like Tiger was in
- 46:04Speaker 8: his prime. They rise to the majors in ways that
- 46:08Speaker 8: ordinary players don't and can't. Scotty didn't tell me this,
- 46:13Speaker 8: We didn't talk about this, but I suspect if you
- 46:17Speaker 8: gave him truth serum, he would tell you that there
- 46:19Speaker 8: are four times a year when he really really cares,
- 46:23Speaker 8: and it would be the four majors, and this is
- 46:25Speaker 8: the first one. The fact that he's won two and
- 46:29Speaker 8: is defending this year, I think he wants I think
- 46:34Speaker 8: he wants a legacy.
- 46:35Speaker 4: Again.
- 46:36Speaker 8: This is another thing that he doesn't talk about legacy,
- 46:39Speaker 8: but I think he desires a legacy in the game
- 46:43Speaker 8: in the way that Tiger and Jack did. It's all
- 46:45Speaker 8: about the majors. It's all about these four weeks a year.
- 46:48Speaker 1: There's a nugget in your article that I did not
- 46:51Speaker 1: know about when when Scotty was a freshman golf at
- 46:54Speaker 1: the University of Texas and upset with the golf shot,
- 46:58Speaker 1: ended up injuring himself. When you think of Scotty Chef
- 47:01Speaker 1: or that we know him now, we think about how
- 47:03Speaker 1: a stoic he is, But there was a time where
- 47:05Speaker 1: Scotty was you know, fighting his temper and his anger
- 47:09Speaker 1: in the latest season of Full Swing, which I thought
- 47:11Speaker 1: they did a good job of. Ted Scott when when
- 47:13Speaker 1: he first got the call from Scotty Cheffer to be
- 47:16Speaker 1: his caddy, he asked him point blankly about his anger
- 47:18Speaker 1: and Scotty said, somebody need to work gone. So it's
- 47:21Speaker 1: something that we haven't that we don't really see a
- 47:23Speaker 1: lot of now, but Scotty does and at times did
- 47:27Speaker 1: get really fired up on the golf course.
- 47:30Speaker 8: We all fight it anybody who plays the game, and
- 47:33Speaker 8: no game will will rouse that kind of emotion out
- 47:38Speaker 8: of a person like golf will. He's a guy who
- 47:44Speaker 8: it has come simply to him since he was just
- 47:47Speaker 8: a little kid, just a skinny little kid in Dallas.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Things came easily to him.
- 47:52Speaker 8: And you know, think about that cameraon like what win
- 47:56Speaker 8: are you at your best and what comes simply to you?
- 47:59Speaker 8: And think about a dumb little mistake that arises, like
- 48:04Speaker 8: that's going to get you?
- 48:06Speaker 4: And it got Scottie. It still does. He's way better
- 48:09Speaker 4: at it than he used to be.
- 48:11Speaker 8: That incident you mentioned was at the Raws course at Mubbock,
- 48:16Speaker 8: Texas Tech and it just he snapped he had a
- 48:22Speaker 8: bad shot and he turned around he just like smacked
- 48:24Speaker 8: a tree and it was a mesquite tree and had thorns,
- 48:27Speaker 8: and like embedded a thorn in his hand so deeply
- 48:31Speaker 8: that he had to get surgery to remove it. And
- 48:34Speaker 8: there are other stories too from his past. And we've
- 48:37Speaker 8: seen it on TV even as early even as recently
- 48:40Speaker 8: as this year. I can't remember which tournament it was,
- 48:45Speaker 8: but we saw that, We saw that anger erupt again.
- 48:49Speaker 8: He's a lot better at mitigating it than he used
- 48:52Speaker 8: to be, and he can play through it in a
- 48:54Speaker 8: way that he didn't he wasn't able to do when
- 48:57Speaker 8: he was younger.
- 48:58Speaker 4: But it still happens. It's all always going to happen.
- 49:00Speaker 4: And you know, we saw it in Tiger. We didn't
- 49:02Speaker 4: see it a lot in Nicholas.
- 49:04Speaker 8: Nicholas has a different mind, but I think he's always
- 49:08Speaker 8: going to have to be on point about knowing where
- 49:15Speaker 8: his temper is.
- 49:16Speaker 1: So comparing Scotty, who's had two green jackets chasing a third,
- 49:21Speaker 1: to someone like Rory McRoy, I mean Scotty and Roy
- 49:23Speaker 1: both were the two favorites coming in in this tournament.
- 49:26Speaker 1: Rory has had a lot more cracks at it and
- 49:28Speaker 1: has not been able to crack the code that is
- 49:30Speaker 1: Augusta National. He's been leading on the back nine, He's
- 49:33Speaker 1: been in the final group multiple times.
- 49:35Speaker 2: And it's not a question about talent or skill.
- 49:37Speaker 1: We know Rory is talented, but what is it about
- 49:40Speaker 1: this course that allows Scotty to play so well and
- 49:43Speaker 1: then a golfer like Rory McRoy, who might be the
- 49:45Speaker 1: best golfer of his generation, to struggle time after time
- 49:49Speaker 1: every year, even though everyone thinks he should win this tournament.
- 49:54Speaker 8: I don't know that's golf, as they say, and I
- 49:59Speaker 8: know that sounds like a a way out of your
- 50:00Speaker 8: good question. But you know, golf is endlessly, endlessly complex,
- 50:07Speaker 8: and a little thing can happen that can destroy around.
- 50:12Speaker 8: I take you back to when Rory was I remember
- 50:16Speaker 8: how old he was, twenty two when he had a
- 50:18Speaker 8: lead at Augusta on the tenth teams, leading by four,
- 50:22Speaker 8: and he snap hooked a ball left over by the Cabins, and.
- 50:27Speaker 4: That was the beginning of his undoing Rory. Rory also
- 50:32Speaker 4: is an.
- 50:33Speaker 8: Emotional player, but we don't see him run hot. We
- 50:38Speaker 8: don't see anger as much as we see out of Scotty.
- 50:42Speaker 8: We see sullenness. I think I think Rory can get
- 50:45Speaker 8: down more deeply than Scotty can. I don't think Scotty
- 50:50Speaker 8: has the capacity to get as low as Rory does,
- 50:56Speaker 8: and I think that's what makes Rory lovable and relatable
- 50:59Speaker 8: to those of us who watch golf. I don't know
- 51:02Speaker 8: that the course suits Scotty Scheffler in any special way.
- 51:06Speaker 8: And that's simply because every course suits Scotty Scheffler every course.
- 51:13Speaker 8: He's long enough, he's really accurate with his driver, he
- 51:18Speaker 8: is absolutely splendid with his irons, his chipping and pitching,
- 51:22Speaker 8: his short game is magic. And when he putchs, and
- 51:27Speaker 8: this has been said many times, and I'm not the
- 51:29Speaker 8: first to say first to say it, but when he puts,
- 51:32Speaker 8: just has an average putting day, he's gonna beat everybody
- 51:36Speaker 8: by four.
- 51:37Speaker 1: I think, as Jordan Steith was asked on Wednesday, what
- 51:41Speaker 1: is it about Augusta that suits Scotty Scheffler's game so well?
- 51:44Speaker 1: In Jordan' said, will every golf course suits Scotty Scheffer's
- 51:47Speaker 1: game so well? He's currently five hundred par in sixth place. Okay,
- 51:51Speaker 1: the course is firming up, Kevin, the wind is gusting.
- 51:54Speaker 1: I know you've been out to Augusta before. I want
- 51:57Speaker 1: to get your pick heading into the weekend, and do
- 52:00Speaker 1: you have a pick or a prediction on who you
- 52:02Speaker 1: think he's going to win the Masters this season? With
- 52:04Speaker 1: Justin Rose in front at eight under, the Shamble at
- 52:06Speaker 1: seven under, and a handful of other golfers at six
- 52:09Speaker 1: under in Chloe, Rory mcclroy.
- 52:12Speaker 8: So I think Justin Rose is going to fade. He's
- 52:14Speaker 8: going to be a good story for a couple of days.
- 52:18Speaker 8: I don't think he I don't think he rises to it.
- 52:21Speaker 8: I think Bryson Deshambo is going to be somebody to
- 52:23Speaker 8: reckon with, and I think Rory McElroy is going to
- 52:26Speaker 8: be someone to reckon with. But I also like the
- 52:29Speaker 8: way Shane Lowry's playing right now. I like the way
- 52:33Speaker 8: Victor Hobland is playing right now, and Scotti Scheffler.
- 52:39Speaker 1: Eighteen to last twenty Masters champions have been inside the
- 52:42Speaker 1: top ten after Thursday. The only two golfers to not
- 52:45Speaker 1: the win out of the top ten after Thursday was
- 52:48Speaker 1: Well Tiger Woods. So we'll see Kevin. Thanks so much
- 52:50Speaker 1: stopping by. I appreciate it. And it's so nice outside.
- 52:53Speaker 1: We got to get out to Muni at some point
- 52:55Speaker 1: in the next couple of weeks.
- 52:57Speaker 4: I can be there in an hour, can you.
- 53:00Speaker 1: I didn't have this radio show. I didn't have the show.
- 53:02Speaker 1: I would until next week. Thank you, Good to see you,
- 53:06Speaker 1: Good to see you.
- 53:06Speaker 2: All right.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Kevin Robbins, golf author and professor with the University of
- 53:10Speaker 1: Texas at Austin. Again check out his latest piece on
- 53:13Speaker 1: Texas Monthly dot Com. A fantastic feature on Scotti Scheffler.
- 53:17Speaker 1: All right, two and a half, an hour and a
- 53:19Speaker 1: half in today's show. Still more to come here on
- 53:21Speaker 1: the Craigway Show. Just getting rolling here on a fire
- 53:24Speaker 1: me up Friday, augusta National proving a little bit hard
- 53:27Speaker 1: to handle for some golfers, others not so much. Like
- 53:31Speaker 1: Rory mcclroy is sixty six on this Friday, now up
- 53:34Speaker 1: to T three Rice and the Shamba A sixty eight.
- 53:37Speaker 1: He's in solo, second in Justin Rose a seventy one,
- 53:41Speaker 1: following up with sixty five yesterday. He is currently your
- 53:44Speaker 1: clubhouse leader here on this Friday afternoon. The wind is
- 53:48Speaker 1: whipping at the Masters and we'll see how this back
- 53:51Speaker 1: nine plays. As the sun is out, the course is
- 53:54Speaker 1: firming up, and Amen, corner.
- 53:57Speaker 2: Very busy right now.
- 53:58Speaker 1: We'll see how this affects the leaderboard in the cut line.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Currently they projected cut at two over parts. It's top
- 54:05Speaker 1: fifty in ties and right now some big names outside
- 54:09Speaker 1: of it, some big names inside of it, with Corey
- 54:12Speaker 1: Connors in Terrell Hatton at six under par. They're currently
- 54:15Speaker 1: on the back nine. Scotty Scheffer back to five hundred
- 54:18Speaker 1: part after costly Boge currently one under on his round
- 54:23Speaker 1: as Scheffer's group is playing the ultra difficult eleventh hole
- 54:27Speaker 1: right now, and Scotty and Justin Thomas and Jose Luise Balister,
- 54:32Speaker 1: who we're going to see if he does he and
- 54:34Speaker 1: rays Creek this time around, hopefully not. But they're playing
- 54:37Speaker 1: about thirty yards shy of the green because of not
- 54:40Speaker 1: wanting to even get near rays Creek, but also because
- 54:43Speaker 1: of how the wind is affecting the golf ball right now.
- 54:47Speaker 1: So Scheffer three shots back out of Justin Rose and
- 54:51Speaker 1: also at four under par at Victor Hovlin and Rasmus
- 54:55Speaker 1: Hoyguard at T tenor remember eighteen to last twenty Masters
- 55:01Speaker 1: champions have been inside the top ten after the opening
- 55:05Speaker 1: round of the Masters, so that would include Bryce and
- 55:07Speaker 1: the Shambo. It would include Scotty Scheffler, would not include
- 55:10Speaker 1: Roy McRoy, who ended up at even parr after one
- 55:14Speaker 1: point being four under par, but two separate double bogies
- 55:18Speaker 1: brought him back to the earth. But a sixty six
- 55:21Speaker 1: for Roy mccroy taking advantage of the easier conditions in
- 55:24Speaker 1: the morning to put himself There's two shots off the
- 55:27Speaker 1: lead of Justin Rose. He would be the second the
- 55:30Speaker 1: last group off the off tomorrow if the scoring does
- 55:34Speaker 1: hold up, but a couple more par vibes one more
- 55:37Speaker 1: par vive for Corey Connors. S Drell Hatton still has
- 55:40Speaker 1: the entire back nine the play, as does Scotty Scheffler
- 55:43Speaker 1: and Jason Day. By the way, Jason Day now at
- 55:46Speaker 1: five under par, three under par for his round. The
- 55:49Speaker 1: Australian who's always played well, the twenty fifteen PGA champion,
- 55:53Speaker 1: has not one out of Augusta. He's certainly been in
- 55:55Speaker 1: contention before and trying to put himself up there in
- 55:59Speaker 1: the weekend. Ludvig Aberg Oberg whatever the Texas Tech Golfer,
- 56:04Speaker 1: three under par a seventy three for Oberg today, sitting
- 56:09Speaker 1: four shots back at Eki Matsuyama, a sixty eight today,
- 56:12Speaker 1: he's at three under par. Sanders Shoffley following up a
- 56:15Speaker 1: seventy three yesterday with a sixty nine the day to
- 56:17Speaker 1: put himself at two under par. He's right there with
- 56:20Speaker 1: Tommy Fleetwood as well. Patrick Reid twenty eighteen Masters Champion,
- 56:25Speaker 1: two under par for the tournament. He'll make the cut line.
- 56:29Speaker 1: Colin Morikawa at one under par, Justin Thomas one under par,
- 56:32Speaker 1: Max Homa, who has struggled this season, at seventy today.
- 56:36Speaker 1: He's inside the cut line at even par for the tournament.
- 56:38Speaker 1: Matt Sirkpatrick, Daniel Berger, Wyndam Clark, saw Hif Tagala, and
- 56:43Speaker 1: Jordan Speed all at Evan par spied by the way
- 56:46Speaker 1: uh one under on the round today, coming off a
- 56:49Speaker 1: bogie at the tenth pole after missing the green, left
- 56:52Speaker 1: a poor up and down would miss about a fifteen
- 56:55Speaker 1: footer for par. So he's on the eleventh green right now,
- 56:59Speaker 1: the than Tea rather which is playing super tough. Looking
- 57:02Speaker 1: at Scotti scheff Wer, He's gonna have about a ten
- 57:04Speaker 1: to fifteen foot putt to stay par.
- 57:07Speaker 2: The save bar on the.
- 57:08Speaker 1: Eleventh as they're now entering a men's corner the eleventh
- 57:11Speaker 1: twelfth and thirteenth hole on the cut.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Line as well. We're inside the cut line rather.
- 57:16Speaker 1: Phil Mickelson, by the way, currently two hunderd par for
- 57:18Speaker 1: his round, the three time Masters champion, trying to sneak
- 57:21Speaker 1: inside one over par for the tournament. Tom Kimmitt won
- 57:25Speaker 1: over par, John Rahm seventy one the day looks like
- 57:28Speaker 1: he'll be playing this weekend. And how about Bernhard Longer
- 57:32Speaker 1: currently two over par playing or sorry, two over par
- 57:36Speaker 1: for the tournament. Even on his round today it's his
- 57:39Speaker 1: last Masters he's trying to make the cut line, has
- 57:42Speaker 1: two more holes to go if he can finish even par.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Bernhard Longer, the Masters champion, multi Masters champion, could be
- 57:48Speaker 1: playing this weekend. Bred Couple's currently three over on his round.
- 57:52Speaker 1: He's on the fifteenth hole. He's right on that cut
- 57:55Speaker 1: line number alongside Keigan Bradley and Tony Fee now outside
- 57:59Speaker 1: the current projected cut, Dustin Johnson, Russell, Henley cam Smith
- 58:04Speaker 1: who currently is limping right now four over par through
- 58:08Speaker 1: fifteen holes. Smith had a seventy one yesterday but made
- 58:11Speaker 1: a double bogie on the eleventh hole after hitting his
- 58:15Speaker 1: second shot in the water. Again, it's that downhill lengthy
- 58:19Speaker 1: par four that Scottie Sheffer currently is playing on. So
- 58:22Speaker 1: Cam Smith to live golfer will be going home this weekend.
- 58:25Speaker 1: Perhaps Sergio Garcia four over par for the tournament a
- 58:28Speaker 1: seventy six today, Brooks Koepka a seventy five, Adam Scott
- 58:32Speaker 1: five over for the tournament.
- 58:34Speaker 2: Those guys will be going home.
- 58:35Speaker 1: Jonathan Vegas in his return to a gust of the
- 58:37Speaker 1: former Texas Longhorn golfer a seventy five, seventy five this week,
- 58:41Speaker 1: six over par, and Will Salad Torris a popular pick
- 58:45Speaker 1: including me a seventy four yesterday. He's currently four over
- 58:48Speaker 1: on the tournament, six over six over overall. It looks
- 58:52Speaker 1: like Will Salad Torris, unless he can maybe hole out
- 58:56Speaker 1: from the fairway of seventeen to eighteen for eagle, will
- 58:59Speaker 1: be going home this week. And Cam Young is seventy
- 59:01Speaker 1: nine the day and then a few other names down
- 59:04Speaker 1: the list. Angel Cabrera, a two time Masters champion. By
- 59:08Speaker 1: the way, remember he spends some time in prison for assault,
- 59:16Speaker 1: did not play for a couple of years. He was
- 59:18Speaker 1: in prison for thirty months actually for a domestic abuse case.
- 59:23Speaker 1: The fifty five year old Argentine who actually I believe
- 59:25Speaker 1: one last season, one last week on the Champions Tour
- 59:30Speaker 1: did miss the cut. He does have a lifetime exemption
- 59:33Speaker 1: because he is a Master's champion. Sorry two thousand and
- 59:36Speaker 1: nine it' said multi master champion.
- 59:38Speaker 2: He won once.
- 59:38Speaker 1: He lost to Adam Scott and the playoffical leaving twenty
- 59:40Speaker 1: eleven or twenty twelve of a cabrera a seventy nine
- 59:44Speaker 1: or sorry, a seventy five to eighty this week and
- 59:46Speaker 1: he's currently eleven over part and will miss the tournament.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Scottiechffer getting ready to put for par on the eleventh hole.
- 59:53Speaker 1: Currently he is currently three shots back from Justin Rose.
- 59:57Speaker 1: Trying to stay alive. Okay, real quick, before we he
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: hit the brake. I want to get to this John
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Moran story. John Moran, Memphis Grizzlies guard, forward whatever. Two
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: years ago, it felt like Morent was going to be
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: the face of the league. I mean, he's such a
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: fun player for Murray State Super Athletic and of course
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: he had the off the court stuff. His dad, Tea Morant,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: who's always sitting court side, who's always talking drash to
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: a referee or a player or whatever. Always kind of
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: in the news. Well of course, the stuff happened with
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Moran and the gun violence. You know, he was fined
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: seventy five thousand dollars earlier this season for the gun gestures.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Remember he was suspended in twenty twenty three for twenty
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: five games because of several incidents involving firearms. Remember went
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: to a shopping mall and there was allegations that him
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: and his crew were attacking as a security guard because
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: of something to do with his mom.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: There was always stuff going on with Moran.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: Was suspended twenty five games twenty twenty three, twenty four season,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: ended up getting injured. Last season, has not really been healthy,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: and then this year comes back. He's been playing Okay,
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: his numbers are down, he's been in now the lineup.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Memphis ends up firing their head coach, Tyler Jenkins, who
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: I believe was the coach of the Year two three
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: years ago. I mean, Griffley's are a playoff team, but
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: obviously not playing the lovely thought they were well after
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: this gun gesture thing, you know, Muran gets fined seventy
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: five thousand dollars. Okay, we're past the point with Moran
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: where he's learned this lesson. He's already been suspended two times.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Now he's spend in twenty five games. He was suspended
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: eight games this season. He gets fined after mimicking a
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: gun shot twice in a game. After that, he drops
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: a new celebration bomb drop morat new celebrations out. Well,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: he's gone from guns to hand grenades. After a five
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: or thirteen night and a loss the Timberwolves, Moran is
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: acting like he's pulling a pin out and tossing a
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: grenade to the arena. He's twice now, did it against
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: the Timberwolves and did it against the Miami Heat.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: I believe so it's twice now. He's twenty eight years old.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: And his quote on this, by the way, is that's
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: my celebration now until somebody else has a problem with it,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: and I'll find another one twenty eight years old, possibly
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: the face of the league.
- 1:02:35Speaker 2: And Moran just cannot get out of his way.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: That's exactly the reason why the Memphis Grizzlies are where
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: they're at right now. Instead of being a top team
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: in the NBA, instead of fighting for a top six spot,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: they're in the playing game right now, battling with the Timberwolves.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Because John Moran is still acting like a child. He
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: cares more about a celebration than he does care about
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: winning basketball games. We'll be back to w or two
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: here on The Craigway Show.
