Transcript
- 0:06On a football Friday, we welcome you to Miller and Condon on the
- 0:10Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon and Ken Miller for
- 0:14the next couple of hours to talk a whole lot of sports with you.
- 0:17And thanks for starting your afternoon here with us.
- 0:20Here's what's coming up Friday very busy on in the Miller and
- 0:24Condon program. So well, you know every day in
- 0:26football season is but Friday's particularly so we will start
- 0:30going to kick around a couple of games.
- 0:32Bama Bob will join us as he does every Friday, normally on
- 0:35Monday, but I don't think we'll recap Monday this week with him.
- 0:38We will on Labor Day as we will be here on Labor Day.
- 0:41All of the shows are on as we took what was the day July the
- 0:443rd whatever. We took a four day weekend
- 0:46around the 4th of July in exchange for Labor Day.
- 0:49So just in advance clip and save and file that away.
- 0:51That will be a local programming on Labor Day, but Bama Bob will
- 0:56kick things off here at about 10 minutes or so.
- 0:59Then we'll head to Las Vegas, catch up with a very busy Mike
- 1:02Palm. It is a busy time at Circus
- 1:05Sports contest weekend. Sign up weekend.
- 1:08Their big push to get as many people and Survivor and millions
- 1:11as possible. You see the number of radio
- 1:13stations are out there. Radio roll looks like the Super
- 1:16Bowl for crying out. Loud.
- 1:17It's wild, isn't it? Really is when we started four
- 1:19years ago. That was us.
- 1:20You know what? I'm glad we're not there this
- 1:24weekend. It it's a little overwhelming.
- 1:26It is, and you know, we get we're the only ones when we're
- 1:29there. Right.
- 1:30Yes. Anyways, that aside, we'll talk
- 1:34to Mike Palm at 12:30. Mitch Holtis will join us
- 1:36somewhere after 1245. Look forward to that
- 1:39conversation with Mitch. I think this is the finale.
- 1:44This is it I think. We're, I think training camp is
- 1:46over after this week, so this may or may not be the final
- 1:49Chiefs daily training camp report.
- 1:51But the good news is, if you're a fan of the Chiefs or a fan of
- 1:53the NFL, Mitch will join us every Thursday, although they're
- 1:57in Brazil Week 1. Might be a little different,
- 2:00we'll figure. It a little different, but
- 2:01anyways, most Thursdays he's with us to talk about the Chiefs
- 2:05upcoming game. Papa John's throughout the state
- 2:08of Iowa headquartered here in Johnston.
- 2:10They sponsor the segment both during the training camp and
- 2:14then during the regular season appearances.
- 2:16Tom Cacard on Iowa kicks off our number 2.
- 2:20Trent, I'm I want to get your take.
- 2:24On that, OK. I've seen more Hawkeye fans
- 2:30agree, agree on on a topic that I'm not sure they would have had
- 2:37been any other name. This Fitzgerald's stuff has
- 2:40legs. You think so?
- 2:41I mean, I don't know, I shouldn't, you know what I mean,
- 2:43free phrase. It doesn't have legs, but boy,
- 2:46oh boy, it has Hawk fans talking and tweeting and posting on
- 2:50message boards. Did you?
- 2:53I mean, did you see it the same way as I did?
- 2:55I I. Did.
- 2:55And I was a little bit surprised because when we brought that up
- 2:58yesterday during the show, I was being a little floppy.
- 3:02I the tweet from his son that had the black and gold.
- 3:05All right, we'll take it a step further.
- 3:07And thinking that it wouldn't have those kind of legs that
- 3:10other Hawkeye fans and people in the media wouldn't have the same
- 3:13kind of thoughts. But you're right, it's something
- 3:17that would make a whole lot of. Sense it would now the only bad
- 3:20news, I think bad news, if you want to call it that it for
- 3:23those folks that would like to see that transition happen from
- 3:26fairness to Fitz is I don't know the time period.
- 3:29I don't know how does does does Fitch want?
- 3:32How about if he gets a week and an odd right, does that lead him
- 3:34into a television for a year or two?
- 3:36Until when? Because I don't think Kirk
- 3:38Ference should ever be pushed out of the university.
- 3:40No, ever. No.
- 3:41I saw an incredible stat, his win percentage by decade that he
- 3:45was there. I would say the 90s was
- 3:46terrible. The the odds you think would be
- 3:49incredible. They were good.
- 3:52Yeah. But there were a couple of down
- 3:53years in there. The 10s were actually a little
- 3:56bit better than even the aughts were.
- 3:58Mm hmm, But the 20s have been his best decade ever.
- 4:01Mm hmm. This guy at this point in his
- 4:04career is putting together yet another great and now it's just
- 4:09only half a decade at this point.
- 4:11But the best decade of his career comes during this last
- 4:15five years. That shows you the guy still
- 4:17knows how to win and you can argue.
- 4:19And the message just getting home amongst those young
- 4:21players. You can argue about it's not
- 4:24pretty, no, but the guy wins football games.
- 4:26The nine and three, eight and four every year, a lot of
- 4:28programs would sign up for that with with occasional 10 and two,
- 4:31maybe an 11 and 1 sprinkled. In about 95.
- 4:33Percent your programs would sign up.
- 4:35Absolutely. So Tom Cake will kick off our
- 4:38number two. We will pick his brain obviously
- 4:40on that. And then some of the latest I
- 4:42saw Coach Ference met with the media yesterday.
- 4:46How did you take his Mark Karnowski comment?
- 4:51I think that's. Starting to figure it out a
- 4:53little bit more and I'm paraphrasing but it didn't sound
- 4:55like a finished work if you will.
- 5:00I think that goes hand in hand though, with what we've heard
- 5:02through this camp. Ups and downs, there's been ups
- 5:06and downs and that's kind of how we've heard it.
- 5:09And I think you could probably take what he said.
- 5:11Yes, I'll get the exact quote. We'll we'll find it.
- 5:13But he talked about the backups and you know, both of them.
- 5:18He's very forthcoming and I appreciated that about Coach
- 5:21Ference and that because I didn't think this time last week
- 5:24we were told there'll be nothing this week.
- 5:25So it's kind of a bonus to get some Hawkeye coverage on the
- 5:28football program in kind of a slow week at the University of.
- 5:32We heard it was a very slow start from Gronowski.
- 5:34We anticipate that he's going to.
- 5:37I think there's going to be times he's going to drive Kirk
- 5:39nuts because he takes chances. He goes down the field and
- 5:42that's not a whole lot of what we've seen, but that is what he
- 5:46is in the way that he wants to play is he's going to be
- 5:48aggressive down the field. And I wonder if maybe that's a
- 5:51part of it too, where Kirk's kind of reconfiguring himself a
- 5:55little bit right there. We're now going to have a
- 5:58quarterback that is going to take chances and you have to be
- 6:00OK with that because if this offense is going to be opened up
- 6:03and is I mentioned to beat an Indiana, to beat an Oregon, to
- 6:06beat a handful of teams, they're going to have to score points.
- 6:10They can't win everything 1310. No, that's not the way forward.
- 6:14I don't think with this team this this defense, I think that
- 6:18still has major question marks. They're going to have to win a
- 6:20probably a couple shootouts this.
- 6:21Year, yeah, I think it's the secondary trend.
- 6:23This kind of has to be one a little bit, and I think Hawk
- 6:25fans might feel the same way. But in order to do that, you
- 6:27have to have a quarterback that takes chances.
- 6:29I totally agree with you. And then at 1:30 we're going to
- 6:33head to Dublin and catch up with her colleague Heather Burnside.
- 6:36She's when did she get there, Saturday or Sunday?
- 6:39She's been there a long time anyways, for the better part of
- 6:41a week, travelling all over the the country.
- 6:44Now they've arrived in Dublin as most Cyclone fans have, except
- 6:47for one group. Do you see that awful story
- 6:50about that one tour group that left them high and dry left out
- 6:54of Des Moines? Now again, it weather's going to
- 6:57weather's not the travel company's fault.
- 6:59But no follow up after you get, you know, after you get
- 7:02derailed, that is your fault. And not answering your phone
- 7:06when people are panicking that have sent their money in for
- 7:08this excursion of a lifetime to watch their team over an island.
- 7:12Can't think of the company's name.
- 7:13I wish I could so I could RIP them.
- 7:14But the stories at WHOTV 13's website, I'm sure most people
- 7:18have it now. But yeah, just really
- 7:21unfortunate. But the good news there is for
- 7:22these two people quoted in the article, they've made it so they
- 7:25will see their team. And that team will kick off our
- 7:27time tomorrow at 11:00. Our time to be followed up by
- 7:32Kansas and Fresno State and then Hawaii and Stanford.
- 7:35Those are the three I'll be watching and then I'll get back
- 7:37to baseball. Do you just think of this in 24
- 7:41hours, we're going to be in the middle of the second quarter of
- 7:44a football game then not just. Location's the company's name.
- 7:47Thank you. Week 0 that we've enjoyed, Week
- 7:510 not. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:53But this is different. This is so different that this
- 7:57is the way that not just us here locally but nationally, this is
- 8:00how sport fans are going to be able to kick off their football
- 8:04season. This is massive for the Big 12,
- 8:06yes, massive for the conference. Having these two teams, both
- 8:10teams who have realistic aspirations of winning a
- 8:13conference and they are going to bring the curtain up on the 2025
- 8:18college football season over an Ireland Ireland 2 good teams,
- 8:22two teams that you know may have an opportunity, both of them to
- 8:26play for their conference championship.
- 8:28So really, really fortunate is how I look at it.
- 8:32There are two more games scheduled for the next two years
- 8:34over an. Ireland, what are they?
- 8:35Do you have? Them I do this next year.
- 8:39TCU like a Big 12 team. Yeah, against Bill Belichick and
- 8:43the Tar Heels. Will he be there?
- 8:45No. No.
- 8:46OK, Yeah. Then in 27, Pitt and Wisconsin,
- 8:51this is different. This is not to disparage our
- 8:55cyclone brethren, but for everybody beating their chest
- 8:59and thinking that they're going to out drink Ireland and you're
- 9:01not, I mean stop. They're going to give it a
- 9:03whirl, though. You got.
- 9:04To they're going to give it a but Wisconsin, they're going to
- 9:08take it to an animal. Yeah, they're going to put it.
- 9:09I mean, if you want to take it maybe even to another level like
- 9:12LSU, those, those people put it to another level.
- 9:15But it's still, you think you're a great drinker, You think
- 9:18you're a great drinking fan base.
- 9:19It's Ireland. Yeah, let's slow down.
- 9:21And we're going to drink him out of whiskey and we're going to
- 9:24drink him out of beer. There's not a fan base that
- 9:26could do that. Ireland See.
- 9:27That old guy over in the corner, he's there every day.
- 9:30He's a pro. He'll be on.
- 9:32He'll be in that chair when you guys get back on your airplanes
- 9:34to come home. Yes, And those two next game,
- 9:36those fan bases will see that same dude and others like him in
- 9:40the same bar stools throughout the country of Ireland.
- 9:43Well, good stuff. That's what's coming up on the
- 9:44program today. Bama Bob, we will get to him
- 9:46momentarily will give us we'll get our take on kind of these
- 9:50three games. I'm gonna throw at the boys this
- 9:52one as well. Just a a team that since we last
- 9:55went on record and it's been, I don't know, over a week or so,
- 9:58There's so, so there's been plenty of time and I get it.
- 10:02We're leading up to it, right. The just the buzz around the
- 10:04team is there is there a buzz team that, you know, some folks
- 10:08that maybe you respect or you follow or at least you pay
- 10:11attention to? Is there a team like they're
- 10:14like that and you just can't figure it out for whatever
- 10:16reason. I don't get why this guy or gal
- 10:18is trumpeting this team. So we'll do that coming up as
- 10:21well. And then we're going to get the
- 10:22Mike Palm toward the bottom of the hour.
- 10:24Yeah, the the company's on location.
- 10:26That's a bad luck. That's a that's your damn phones
- 10:29when you're when the people that have botcher excursion are are
- 10:32having trouble with their travel difficulty.
- 10:34No one's blaming you for the weather in Chicago.
- 10:36OK, no one is going that far, but help him out.
- 10:39Let's get to Bama Bob. He joined.
- 10:41We didn't get his music. Don't we need?
- 10:43You want the music, we got to have the.
- 10:45Music hang. On.
- 10:51All right, here we go. Feels like football now.
- 10:53It does. College football is here.
- 10:56Hell yeah with Lynyrd Skynyrd. And Bama Bob joins Trenton Eyes,
- 11:00he does every single Friday and we're grateful for that.
- 11:05Hello Bama, how are you? I'm doing great.
- 11:08I've missed the intro there. Sounds like you're fired up, but
- 11:10I like it. I like the passion.
- 11:12Yeah, absolutely. Gotta have your tune, man.
- 11:14Yeah, I think there's Cappy has his own lead.
- 11:16How? Who else does strength Cappy
- 11:18does in Bama? Simple.
- 11:19Oh, simple. Yeah, I'm not sure he loves
- 11:21that. Simple's a little more produced,
- 11:23yeah, and I absolutely love. That's my favorite open
- 11:26apologies to you, Beva, but I've put a couple of funny quotes
- 11:29from Simple throughout the years in.
- 11:30There, it's really good. Well.
- 11:32He's. Great.
- 11:33No, he really is. I know you've known for a long
- 11:35time as well. So let's let's get into this
- 11:37three games. I think that's I mean, Trent
- 11:40will probably find a couple more, but there's three that
- 11:43move the needle, obviously the opener, the lid lifter and then
- 11:46Kansas and Fresno State, followed by Hawaii and Stanford.
- 11:50And boy, there's a lot of folks that are just poo poo in this
- 11:53Stanford football team. And maybe rightly so.
- 11:56It might be that quote rebuild, but Bama, before we get into
- 12:01that, let's let's start with the news not of the day of yesterday
- 12:05that the SCC is on board and they are going to 9.
- 12:08But not only are they going to 9, they now require yes, to play
- 12:129 conference games here here, but you also have to play one
- 12:16game against a another power for conference.
- 12:19So I love this. The water's about to get deeper.
- 12:23I I love the fact that everybody's running the same
- 12:26race for the most part ACC Let's get going here.
- 12:30But Bama, I think this was good news.
- 12:31You see it? Do you see it differently?
- 12:33Oh. No, 100% I agree.
- 12:35And listen, this is something if you go back, there's an article
- 12:38on al.com today, you go back over a decade, Nick Saban was
- 12:42pushing for this. Now he was pushing for it back
- 12:44when he was dominating college football and there was no portal
- 12:46and there was no NIL. But he said, you know, you look,
- 12:50he said we we need to be playing non conference games.
- 12:53And I think that was even before obviously Oklahoma and Texas
- 12:56came in. So I like it.
- 12:59I think in they have the agreement now or the the rule
- 13:03now where you do have to play another power for they're
- 13:05keeping that. And I think that's huge.
- 13:07I really do, because that's going to give them essentially
- 13:1010 Power Four games, and Indiana and Curt Signetti can shove it
- 13:15whether you know you know where. All that crap.
- 13:18Yeah, how they are now. You know, they are openly
- 13:21bragging about the crappiness of their non conference schedule.
- 13:25Oh, we're going to make it an FCC schedule.
- 13:27All right, pal. Well, now, you know, look at
- 13:29Alabama this year, they've got Florida State, Wisconsin, and
- 13:32before you start, nobody knew FSU was going to be two and 10
- 13:35last year when this game was scheduled.
- 13:37Same for Wisconsin. Those look like 2 pretty good
- 13:40games. I think next year or 27, they
- 13:42play Ohio State and West Virginia.
- 13:44That's pretty salty. So I like it.
- 13:47I think this is really driven by and they listen, they knew it
- 13:51was coming. Obviously the whole playoff with
- 13:54the schedule or whatever they're going to call it now where
- 13:58you're going to end as you should.
- 13:59OK. So the one thing we don't want
- 14:02to see in my opinion, from a fan's perspective, because so
- 14:05much has changed, right, NIL, you don't know who's on your
- 14:08roster year to year. You know, people, teams can
- 14:10outspend everybody else and everything.
- 14:14The one thing that fans deserve, I think whether you're a season
- 14:17ticket holder or what else is a decent schedule, if you're going
- 14:20to shell out all this money, you're going to want to see, you
- 14:23know, 3 or 4 good games. And I think now you're going to
- 14:27have 10 Power four games as an SEC team.
- 14:31And I think it's great. Yeah, I think it's great.
- 14:34And, you know, maybe more, who knows, you know, probably
- 14:36they'll they'll still do, you know, maybe a group of five and
- 14:39then an FCS. And I got no problem with the
- 14:41FCSI really don't but. As long as it's not the second
- 14:44the last weekend of the football season.
- 14:48I don't blame that. I I really.
- 14:50Kind of a breather late in the year.
- 14:51Well, it. Used to be, you know, Alabama
- 14:53would always take something off before, you know, play 1 before
- 14:56Auburn, the Iron Bowl. But that's, that's kind of
- 14:58changed now with Texas and and Oklahoma.
- 15:01So you are getting them a little bit more dispersed throughout
- 15:04the year. And I get it.
- 15:05But if you're going to play 10 Power Four teams, what does it
- 15:08really matter when you play the FCS Team I?
- 15:10I just, I just look at it from selfish reason.
- 15:12I just want good. Games, I agree.
- 15:14I agree. You don't really want a November
- 15:15game with, you know, you know, Mercer and Alabama.
- 15:19I get it, but you know it. I think overall it is a good
- 15:23thing and I think it will preserve these big non
- 15:26conference schedules, games like Texas and Ohio State that we're
- 15:29going to see in week 1 and all these other ones.
- 15:31I think it will encourage teams and maybe Indiana will have to
- 15:34cap, you know, cancel some of those cupcakes that they have so
- 15:36proudly and openly scheduled. But we'll see.
- 15:40Trent, give me a team within the last week since we went our
- 15:43record with our picks like I I, I sat in here before the show
- 15:47today as I mentioned that Chris Falika bet in one of his tweets,
- 15:53he bet Minnesota to make the College Football Playoff at 18
- 15:56to 1 like Minnesota. Did I hear that right?
- 16:00But who's the team that's getting buzzed that you you
- 16:04can't grasp it getting buzzed that I can't grasp.
- 16:07You don't understand why this person who you might follow on
- 16:10Twitter, you might listen to on a podcast is is all over and you
- 16:14you look at the like entirely different.
- 16:16Well, there is one that I think has gone too far and it's
- 16:20something that you and I put in our back pocket back in January.
- 16:23It's the Clemson. Titans.
- 16:24No, really. And it's not nothing to do with
- 16:26the talent because they're incredibly talented and even if
- 16:29they lose to LSU in Week 1, it's not going to matter they.
- 16:31Could they? Absolutely.
- 16:32They're going to get there and they're going to have a chance.
- 16:34But when I hear people still, oh, there's still value on them
- 16:37at 8:00 or 12:50. No, no, that's not value on a
- 16:41team out of the ACC that a best is A2 bid league and maybe it's
- 16:44a one bid league. That is not value.
- 16:46I don't believe when it was 25 to 1 when we grab it, that's
- 16:49good. Absolutely.
- 16:50That would be the one that I I think the Clemson hype has maybe
- 16:53gone a little too far. OK, fair.
- 16:55How about you, Bammy? Got anything that falls in that
- 16:57category? Yeah, the team I just talked
- 16:59about and maybe it's just I'm tired of them or whatever.
- 17:02Indiana. Indiana bothers about SEC OH.
- 17:05My God, no they don't. I mean, listen, here's the no,
- 17:08they don't. The The thing is, it's like it's
- 17:11like he it's nobody down here. I promise you, nobody in power
- 17:16in the SEC gives a crap about Indiana football.
- 17:18No fan of the SEC cares about Indiana football.
- 17:21Now. We cared a little bit last year
- 17:23when they made the playoff with that, you know, ridiculously,
- 17:27you know, you'll look at the the wins that they had and how soft
- 17:29they were and the two teams they played.
- 17:30They got smoked. But look, it I, I just, I don't
- 17:36get it, right? I think they had a really nice
- 17:38year last year. Fine, you put them in the
- 17:39playoffs, they were undefeated for, you know, a long time.
- 17:42And then, you know, they, they weren't up against a couple of
- 17:45good teams and prove they don't belong.
- 17:46I, I just don't see it again this year.
- 17:48I know what I like Signeti as a coach.
- 17:50I think he's a good coach. I think he's probably right for
- 17:53that program and he's doing all the right things.
- 17:55He's trying to generate buzz. He's trying to make names.
- 17:58I just saw that they just, you know, they just got a $50
- 18:00million sponsor for their field name.
- 18:03You know, congratulations. You know, if that's the way you
- 18:05want to go, that's fine. And if you're Indiana, you
- 18:08probably need to do it. But listen, I just their
- 18:10schedule again is very, very soft, some of it on purpose.
- 18:15They don't play Ohio State, they don't play Michigan.
- 18:17You have to go to Penn State. But I just, I don't see it.
- 18:19They're not going to be a playoff team again.
- 18:21And I seen some people. I thought Trip was going to go
- 18:25with Illinois. I was a little surprised.
- 18:27That's been out there for a while.
- 18:28I've already shot holes in that one.
- 18:30Right, right. But I don't know, I just, I
- 18:33don't get the buzz about Indiana.
- 18:34I think they're going to be one of those teams that, you know,
- 18:37had a good year and kind of fell, falls off the map back
- 18:40into the water, is going to seek its level at some point.
- 18:43And I think their level is about 8:00 and 4:00.
- 18:46The one for me, it's Oklahoma. I just don't see how this, I
- 18:50think you've, I think you've got them.
- 18:52I think you've got Venables as your big name coach to be fired.
- 18:54How about this strange, this stretch home to Texas, at South
- 18:58Carolina, home to Old Miss at Tennessee, at Alabama, Missouri,
- 19:02LSUI mean, come on, they're not going.
- 19:04They're not going. Two to three wins out of that.
- 19:06Maybe we literally have 4 minutes left because we got it.
- 19:10We got to finish this segment on time here today.
- 19:13Bama, your thoughts? K State?
- 19:14Iowa State. But I just love the game, all
- 19:18the hoopla and everything around it being played in Ireland and
- 19:21the cute nickname of Farmageddon and all this kind of stuff.
- 19:23Listen, it's a conference game and it's a really important one.
- 19:25We've talked about it before, right?
- 19:28The Big 12 is up for grabs, guys.
- 19:30I think there's, we've talked about it.
- 19:31There's I think at least six teams that can win it.
- 19:33And I put, I'm putting these two in that category, maybe 6-7
- 19:37teams that could win it. And so this is a monster game,
- 19:41not just because it's the first game in Week 0 or because of
- 19:44being played in Ireland. I mean, this is a conference
- 19:47game. I mean, I give credit to both
- 19:49sides for doing this. I'm sure the fans are excited.
- 19:53The last I saw it was, you know, Iowa State getting the field
- 19:56goal. I like Iowa State.
- 19:59I just think what they're going to, I mean, look, I don't think
- 20:02there's any big secret. They're going to run it.
- 20:03They're going to try to be physical.
- 20:05I do like Avery Johnson, but he's got to prove it.
- 20:08He didn't prove it last year. He's got to prove it this year.
- 20:11So I, I, I would take the three points out.
- 20:14I think it's going to be a close game.
- 20:15I think it's, I don't know what the weather's going to be like
- 20:17over there. It's going to be raining or
- 20:18anything, but you know, it's going to be, it's just going to
- 20:21be a spectacle. But I like Iowa State with the
- 20:25points and I just give both teams credit for for playing a
- 20:29huge conference game like this and making something about this
- 20:33is putting these two teams as the focus of college football
- 20:36because it is the first time of the year and everybody's going
- 20:39to be watching. It Yep, without a doubt.
- 20:41Great question on the weather. I don't know either, but Heather
- 20:43will join us about an hour and 10 minutes.
- 20:45So we'll get the latest Trent case, Kansas and Fresno State,
- 20:48Fresno State and just under 2 touchdowns.
- 20:50Kansas had so much buzz a year ago.
- 20:51I didn't buy it. We were right on that one.
- 20:54I don't even see a bounce back this year.
- 20:55I I I think this. Program wins, not yeah.
- 20:57Cuz something like that, yeah, but certainly not in contention
- 21:00come November with a path to the championship.
- 21:03I don't see that out of The Jayhawks.
- 21:04And this Fresno team, they bring a Kurt Warner son to play
- 21:07quarterback after being at Rice. EJ Warner will be the starter
- 21:10for them. They got a hell of an offensive
- 21:12line coach and Brian Ferrets, our tight end coach, whatever
- 21:15he's coaching over there. I like Fresno.
- 21:19He can't let it go, Bam. What I just I gave him a
- 21:21compliment. Backhanded Bama, you're a.
- 21:25Crappy offensive coordinator we could say that to.
- 21:27Preach in the choir, brother. Yeah.
- 21:29Your thoughts on this one Bama? I tend to agree.
- 21:32I think it's pretty exciting. How about the how about the
- 21:34Sunflower State, right? I mean, both the state schools
- 21:38are opening in Week 0, you know, kind of with national windows.
- 21:42Look, I agree with you on Kansas.
- 21:43I thought they were going to be a little better than they were
- 21:45last year. I bought into the quarterback.
- 21:47I think it's going to be fun because they're opening the
- 21:49remodel version of of Memorial Stadium, which man did that
- 21:52place and didn't upgrade. I was 25 years ago and it was a
- 21:55dump then, so I can't imagine how it was now.
- 21:57But I really it's tough to pick this one out of the chute.
- 22:01Maybe lay the points. I don't know from betting angle.
- 22:03It's hard. I just, I think it's, I think
- 22:05it's fun for the state of Kansas to have both their teams really
- 22:09in the national spotlight. It's probably not going to
- 22:11happen again very often this year.
- 22:13Trent, your thoughts on Hawaii Stanford real quick.
- 22:15Yeah, I think the steams come too fast.
- 22:17I like Stanford getting the points now.
- 22:19They were a favorite when this thing opened up.
- 22:20As much as I love Timmy Chang, I think Stanford is going to keep
- 22:23it snug. Maybe win this one out, right?
- 22:24Do you see it the same Bama? You know, I have no idea about
- 22:28the game. Two things.
- 22:29One, I'm stunned that Trent wants to talk about an ACC game.
- 22:33This is probably the only time we'll mention either of these
- 22:35teams this year. And damn it, this should be an
- 22:3711:00 PM kick off. Why are we kicking off at 6:30
- 22:41in Hawaii? This should be 11.
- 22:44Well, yeah, OK. You're probably the only time
- 22:46you'll ever see Hawaii, right? In a home game, there should be
- 22:51an 11:00 PM kick. What are we doing?
- 22:52Come on. Bama, good stuff, brother.
- 22:54We'll talk to you next Friday. We'll have more time.
- 22:57We'll get to the as we normally do, 567 games and we'll run out
- 23:01of time. Thank you, buddy.
- 23:02Appreciate it. Thank you guys.
- 23:03Enjoy the games tomorrow. Thank you, Bama.
- 23:05Bob. Good stuff.
- 23:07Fun. Look, All right, I've got to
- 23:08tell you about a friend's Birkwood farm.
- 23:10Boy, did you see this tailgate package that they put together?
- 23:12This $50 bundle? Now, I've never tried one of
- 23:15these WAG Shire patties. Oh, they're good.
- 23:17I hear that from everybody. Four of those two brought
- 23:21packages. There's four in a package, a
- 23:24tenderloin and if that's not enough for your $50, a rack of
- 23:27Saint Louis ribs. They're on 14th St. here in Des
- 23:32Moines. That's the address.
- 23:34But 50 bucks for that tailgating package.
- 23:37I think this is this one week only.
- 23:39So get it while you can, folks. Birkwood Farms, That is a deal
- 23:44and a half. Four WAG, sharp patties, 2 broad
- 23:47packages, a tenderloin and a rack of Saint Louis ribs, $50.00
- 23:51for that bundle. Mike Palm next.
- 23:53Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 24:02I'm Melory Congon, welcome back the hour of sports Radio
- 24:05network. John Fogarty, credence,
- 24:07Clearwater Revival center field, the baseball song.
- 24:10I didn't know that, but Sir and Dan Patrick inducted into
- 24:13baseball's Hall of Fame. Really the song and Fogarty and
- 24:16he should be. He's an unbelievable entertainer
- 24:18still going strong at 80 years old.
- 24:21Mike Palm joins us VP of operations at Circus sports.
- 24:24How's your? Week Is he going strong?
- 24:25Oh, absolutely. Been all over the country.
- 24:28What's going on in your world, Mike?
- 24:29How are you? Well, I did 17 interviews
- 24:33yesterday on Radio Row and I did 5 this morning.
- 24:37Then I did Beast and you, of course, I did 670 the score on
- 24:40their show from Chicago and I got about 7 or 8 more.
- 24:44So everything's going terrific. I do have to tell you I did the
- 24:47102.9 the Hog in Milwaukee. Yeah.
- 24:50They brought their own audience. They brought 30 people from
- 24:53Wisconsin, traveled with them to their show and it was 20.
- 24:58I guess we did 20 minutes and the guy stood up from the front
- 25:01row and came up and he said, I have listened to them for 27
- 25:06years and that's the best segment they've ever had.
- 25:08You know that I would, I consider it high praise, but you
- 25:11guys listen to Tim Murray every week, so it's sort of a low bar.
- 25:15Nice. I hope Tim heard that.
- 25:17That's good stuff. Really.
- 25:19That's really cool, Mike. Obviously it's such a busy
- 25:22weekend. This is your big push for sign
- 25:24ups contest weekend. But your panel to me is
- 25:27appointment, TVB appointment online, whatever you want to
- 25:30call it. It's on X, it's on the circus X
- 25:34feed. It is so good.
- 25:36I learned something every year from from Betters that you know,
- 25:39I may not have a future in My Portfolio that causes me to at
- 25:43the very least take a look and see if I should add it.
- 25:46And most times I do. What time will that be on
- 25:49tomorrow and who will comprise your panel this year?
- 25:52So it'll be live streamed. If you can't make it to the
- 25:54Galaxy Ballroom at Circa, we live stream it Central time,
- 25:574:00 to 6:00 PM, two to four here in Pacific.
- 26:01And it's another eclectic channel.
- 26:03I do have a former Pro Football player and former Visa compadre,
- 26:07Mike Pritchard, who was of course started Rancho High
- 26:10School here in Las Vegas, stole the national championship for
- 26:13Notre Dame while playing at Colorado on a clipping call.
- 26:17Was a top ten pick in the NFL draft and had a nine year career
- 26:21before injury sidelined him as a wide receiver for the the
- 26:25Falcons, the the the Seahawks and the Broncos.
- 26:28So Richard Chuck Edel from Chicago, originally a very
- 26:31successful pro, better a guy who's made his living for 30
- 26:34years doing it exclusively betting sports and very
- 26:38credible, especially on the NFL. Not as well known.
- 26:41Maybe it's some others, but a very sharp guy.
- 26:45Drew didn't think the whale capper of Justine on VC and he
- 26:48has his own podcast. He's been on NBC before as a
- 26:51sports betting analyst with specializes in the NFL and
- 26:56tennis. He'll be on the panel.
- 26:57And then Sam Monson, who's from Ireland, a former football
- 27:01player, soccer player, but football player and and has
- 27:05worked for Pro Football Focus for years and one of their top
- 27:08analytics guys. So I think four people with very
- 27:11different perspectives and hopefully we'll delve in and
- 27:14we'll we'll we'll shed some light on the upcoming NFL season
- 27:18and maybe that folks will gain a few kernels of knowledge.
- 27:21I remember last year's panel, we heard it on the panel first
- 27:27about how good abortion and commanders were going to be.
- 27:30And Frank Schwab from Yahoo Sports was really high on the
- 27:32commanders. And boy, was he right.
- 27:33So usually you uncover a few a few kernels that are actionable
- 27:38to make the folks the money. That is always excellent.
- 27:41Again, what time is that, Mike? A4 to 6:00 Central time.
- 27:45It'll be streamed on Twitter. 4:00 to 6:00 central time.
- 27:47Yeah, definitely put that in there as you're watching a
- 27:49little football. Let's get into the football.
- 27:52We've talked a lot here the last couple of weeks and asked you
- 27:55felt like there was maybe some Iowa State steam that was coming
- 27:57in. I open up the Circus Sports Iowa
- 27:59app on Wednesday of this week. I already had a 13 to 1 ticket
- 28:03on Iowa State to win the Big 12. I saw they were up to 16 to one
- 28:06now to win the Big 12. So where's the rest of the steam
- 28:09coming in? Feels like Utah has maybe kind
- 28:12of been that Buzz team the last couple of weeks.
- 28:13What else are you seeing as we get ready for the opener, the
- 28:15Big 12 tomorrow? Yeah, I think Kansas State had
- 28:19been the sharp side throughout the summer and Utah's gotten a
- 28:22little love lately. We've seen come in so market a
- 28:26little bit chilly on the other. So Iowa State's drifted up.
- 28:29Of course the big game in Ireland that everybody's looking
- 28:32forward to. It's really, you know, I, I like
- 28:35it. Notre Dame plays Navy because
- 28:37it's not a conference game, but you're, you know, Florida State
- 28:40and Georgia Tech and Iowa State and Kansas State.
- 28:42It's your first conference game and you're traveling so far.
- 28:45And I mean, I think it's a tough spot to make teams play
- 28:48conference games. I know they do it because it
- 28:51increases the interest and gets more people to go over and spend
- 28:54more dollars in Ireland, which is great for, for Dublin.
- 28:57But I think it's a tough spot when you're when you have to
- 29:01play in the strange place. Just like I think the NFL's gone
- 29:03too far with these all these international games.
- 29:07Generally, the game quality sucks.
- 29:10They're not compelling games. And I I think we're over
- 29:13saturated with it. I think it needs to be
- 29:15contracted. We know what Vegas is like
- 29:17during football season. What will it be like tomorrow
- 29:19morning for? You know, it's a, it's a stand
- 29:21alone game at 11. Then we get a couple of other,
- 29:24you know, good ones, Kansas, Fresno State, Stanford, Hawaii.
- 29:26But what will Saturday, what will tomorrow like be in the
- 29:29book as opposed to maybe last Saturday?
- 29:32Mike. Oh, it'll it'll be much more
- 29:34abuzz. I remember mid Notre Dame played
- 29:36Navy and Notre Dame was what, a 32 point favorite?
- 29:39The book was still 90% full for that game.
- 29:42And this is a much more compelling matchup between Iowa
- 29:45State and Kansas State footballs in the week we're getting.
- 29:48We had a crowd last night for NFL preseason.
- 29:51I mean, it's crazy. You know what the book in
- 29:53Franklin last last week had it was about 50% pull for NFL
- 29:59preseason and that's sold out with stand and five rows deep
- 30:02for the UFC card that we showed. They ran out of beer in that
- 30:06whole casino. Even the new center bar was
- 30:08talking to the part center how the center bars go.
- 30:10And she said, oh, Saturday night it was bedlam.
- 30:13They ran out in the first hour. The service well was out of beer
- 30:15and they started they started serving the book from out of my
- 30:18bar here. She said I just now got beer in
- 30:21today. She said with three flights
- 30:23fights to go, we didn't have one can of Michelob Ultra.
- 30:28Oh, boy, people are starved, right?
- 30:30And, and they got a new opportunity out there.
- 30:32That is great to see. Hey, it was something
- 30:35interesting as you're on Visen quite often throughout the
- 30:38course of the week. And you mentioned Tim Murray,
- 30:40he's out of Hawaii doing a couple of shows out there.
- 30:43Him and humans going to be doing some shows.
- 30:45You know what led to that? Was it just one of those idea
- 30:47meetings that came up? Hey, it's week 0.
- 30:49Let's go out to Hawaii. What are those couple of guys
- 30:51going out there enjoying the islands?
- 30:54Well, I think both of them wanted to do it.
- 30:57Of course, humans loves to travel in the summer.
- 31:00He goes down to Del Mar almost every weekend.
- 31:03And I think it was maybe Murray's brainchild.
- 31:05But Beeson told him you got to find a sponsor.
- 31:08So you have to find a sponsor to pay for this trip in broadcast.
- 31:11And they found a jeweler in Hawaii that that put up, put up
- 31:14the dough. And that's how it happened.
- 31:16So they're out there in Hawaii and you know, it's good for
- 31:21them. I love it that they took the
- 31:23show on the road and they do a great job with the college
- 31:26football podcast. They had Brent Musburger on this
- 31:28week. In fact, if you want to go and
- 31:29take a look at that Beast in College Football podcast that
- 31:32Brent was their guest and but Tim and and and Matt do an
- 31:36excellent job with that podcast all season 1.
- 31:38And for us in Franklin, KY, the big watch party on Saturday,
- 31:42which is our fan appreciation day is of course, Western
- 31:45Kentucky playing Sam Houston State.
- 31:47But we were actually in Bowling Green, KY last year for that
- 31:50game on a Wednesday night when when they played at Sam Houston
- 31:53State. So we know the big following
- 31:55Bowling Green just about 35 minutes up the road from
- 31:58Franklin. So that's at six O clock central
- 32:00time. We're also giving away, we're
- 32:02doing a raffle down there Saturday.
- 32:04We're giving away a booth for the every Sunday of the NFL
- 32:07season. And we're giving away a trip for
- 32:09two to Vegas when the tights play the Raiders in October.
- 32:12That's awesome. Well done.
- 32:13Last thing for us, contest update, how are signups going?
- 32:16Are they still trending in a positive over twenty $20 million
- 32:22in Survivor? I know you've all the Bolen by
- 32:24Grandissimo's guarantee and then millions how?
- 32:26What are they doing this week, Mike?
- 32:29Millions, it's like every day you open it up, it's 2% between
- 32:332% below and 2% ahead of last year, right.
- 32:36The Berry it's going to be between 5900 and 6100 people.
- 32:40Grandissimo, we did our 20th yesterday.
- 32:42I think we're doing at least three more this weekend.
- 32:45I think it my number of 30 is probably a little low, maybe we
- 32:47can push 40 And then if you extrapolate it out are pacing
- 32:53this year compared to last year and it perfectly extrapolated
- 32:57the rest of the sign up period, we would end up with a prize
- 33:00pool of $20,070,000 as we speak today.
- 33:03So I think we can get there boys.
- 33:05I really think we can get to 20 million.
- 33:07We did our part absolutely. We're in.
- 33:09We hope to see October. That's the goal.
- 33:13Thank you, Bud. Appreciate you coming on.
- 33:14Mike, Thanks for the mail. I arrived yesterday.
- 33:16Appreciate that and we will talk to you next week.
- 33:19Have a great week, Mike. Pomp, thanks for doing this.
- 33:21I know you're busy. Thanks guys, have a great
- 33:23weekend and enjoy the the panel tomorrow.
- 33:27Yes, we will count on it. Good to talk to you.
- 33:28Mike Palm, VP of operations at Circus Sports.
- 33:31All right, Mitch Holt is coming up next daily Chiefs training
- 33:34camp report. Papa John's Central Live
- 33:36sponsors that. That's coming up next.
- 33:39Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:52Hi, I'm Millary Condon. Welcome back.
- 33:55I think this is the first 45 I ever owned.
- 33:57Really. I think it is my grandparents.
- 34:00Probably. Green River was on one side and
- 34:03a song called Commotion was on the other.
- 34:06You remember that, Holtis? You're about my age.
- 34:08You remember that, Mitch? Oh yeah, and you ought to see
- 34:13the pants that I wore when I was listening to it.
- 34:17Yeah. Yeah.
- 34:20Oh no, I do remember that. But that's all I remember about
- 34:23that night, so. Good stuff.
- 34:25Well, you had a memorable afternoon yesterday, your
- 34:28luncheon. I saw some of the highlights
- 34:30from it, some of the chuckles. I can tell how much you enjoy
- 34:34doing. How long have you done it for?
- 34:35And what does it mean to the people that gather to watch
- 34:39their chiefs be introduced? Yeah, it's really pretty
- 34:43awesome, and it's rare. It's just like this gigantic pep
- 34:46rally, much like Red Friday is 1200 people in one locale
- 34:50introducing all of the team, every guy.
- 34:54And it's, I told you like yesterday when I gave you the
- 34:57report. It's just weird because I know
- 34:5938 won't be on the 53, but still, it's their moment.
- 35:03Like a local kid like Nate Matlack played at K State Olathe
- 35:06East. But what does it mean to me?
- 35:10My relationship with these guys is one of the things I'm most
- 35:13proud of. And when a Chris Jones or a
- 35:16Travis Kelsey or a Mahomes comes up and gives you a hug with a
- 35:21heartfelt feeling for personally for me, it's it's great.
- 35:29And I don't. It's just a matter of these guys
- 35:33are humans. They're remarkable humans.
- 35:35And the Kingdom Series, which now is on ESPN, gives everybody
- 35:41a glimpse into what I've talked about.
- 35:43And when you're involved in competition, I mean, let's just
- 35:46say being a Bronco fan, you don't necessarily see it that
- 35:49way. You're always looking at the
- 35:50competition, at their weakness. Or it's it's the Westmont tooth.
- 35:54I hate you, Anchorman, but I'm I respect you.
- 35:58And then you let the ladder go. I mean, so you ask, but it's
- 36:02this mixture of feelings. But one is just an immense
- 36:06appreciation that I have the chance to have a relationship
- 36:09with these guys and, and some of them are the greatest players or
- 36:15some of the greatest players that have ever played.
- 36:17And so I've done it for 32 years for this luncheon, 31 in person,
- 36:211 virtually in 2020 with the COVID situation.
- 36:25But it's a blessing beyond I can even tell you.
- 36:28So thanks for asking. It's just a, it's a big deal.
- 36:31It's a real big deal. Mitch, one thing that we've
- 36:34learned throughout the years, Andy Reid so buttoned up
- 36:36attention to detail through the roof of what he does.
- 36:39And in a way, we kind of know the beats of what it's going to
- 36:42be. They come in though, off the
- 36:44Super Bowl, lost the disappointment.
- 36:46What felt different knowing that you're going to go through the
- 36:48same beats and it's going to be a lot of the same type of
- 36:50stories just because of who Andy Reid is.
- 36:53What's felt different for you throughout the course of this
- 36:55training camp? There was this reboot.
- 36:58It's just the opposite of the hangover.
- 37:01People always talk about a Super Bowl hangover, and it's real.
- 37:04I think that you can look at it from an empirical standpoint and
- 37:06go, yeah, there's something to that.
- 37:08The disappointment of losing the Super Bowl game is so vast that
- 37:12it takes you a while to get over it.
- 37:14Not with this team, Trent. There's zero of that.
- 37:17In fact, it's just the opposite if there's a hangover.
- 37:20I might have told you guys when I restarted the reports a month
- 37:22ago, it would be just that they have had so much in a such a
- 37:28short period of time. I mean, Mahomes has played 21
- 37:31playoff games in seven years as a starting quarterback, happens
- 37:35to be 17 and four. I mean, think about it.
- 37:38Joe Montana had 16 career postseason wins.
- 37:40Pats got 17. But there's no hangover of like,
- 37:44oh gosh, we got drilled by the Eagles.
- 37:47Life is going to end as we know it.
- 37:49It's just the opposite. These guys are on it.
- 37:51They're on point. They're on task at our division
- 37:54is improved. I'm going to, I'm going to agree
- 37:55with all of that, but so have we, and nobody's talking about
- 37:59it. No, it looks like it looks as
- 38:00though again, it's early, but if training camp is any indicator,
- 38:04they've they've nailed the draft again, Mitch and and for them to
- 38:08year after year do that in particular where their draft
- 38:11place comes up every year. I think that's one of the maybe
- 38:15underrated stories of, of what makes this franchise, you know,
- 38:19have the success that they've have, that they've been having.
- 38:23And this conduit of communication that goes vertical
- 38:26and horizontal is huge. I know it sounds like one of my
- 38:28talks, but it's it's honestly a reality.
- 38:31And the best college programs, you have to have a connectivity
- 38:35of the president to the AD, to the coach.
- 38:37If any of one of that lineup doesn't work, then the program
- 38:41can't succeed over time. And then when you have the flow
- 38:46where assistants want to stay, players want to stay, they and
- 38:50then you get creative when you're drafting at the bottom of
- 38:53every round every year and they're always looking at
- 38:59they're looking at 27 now, 2829. That's the way Beach and his
- 39:02staff works and the way coach works too.
- 39:05But when you get that and there's a connectivity up and
- 39:08down and side to side, it becomes an unstoppable force.
- 39:12And that exists here. It's very rare in professional
- 39:15sports and collegiate sports, but we've got it.
- 39:18We've got it for the time being. I hope it doesn't change for a
- 39:21while, but that's is what it is. If we saw it in Detroit, Detroit
- 39:25changed when Brad Holmes got on the same plan and the Ford
- 39:29family said, OK, we're going to do this different.
- 39:31Same thing the Hunts did with Coach Reed.
- 39:33But it starts this blow and so it's here and this team's good.
- 39:38We got flaws, man. We got flaws, but this Chiefs
- 39:41team is good going into 2025. And the West is going to be just
- 39:45wild. I can't wait.
- 39:46Well, let's talk about Papa John's and how this how this
- 39:49segment comes to be every year. And then when you join us on
- 39:52Thursdays throughout the regular season, let's give them some
- 39:55credit because I know Trent and I are both appreciative of them
- 39:58sponsoring this. Oh.
- 40:00Yeah, they're awesome Tonight, in fact, you got me in a game
- 40:02day, which is really, you know, I'm wearing my game jersey.
- 40:05I've got I was worthless as a kid on game day.
- 40:08You like it. Tell us about the Pythagorean
- 40:10theorem. I'm going like if they bring the
- 40:11linebacker up, that means they're in man and I got to make
- 40:14a call and get out of it. The but I when I see nickel
- 40:17tonight, anytime I see nickel, I'm thinking 5 and if I busted
- 40:21out on the air tonight, I'd be listening.
- 40:23If I say A5 cheese garlic crust one topping pizza 1199, then
- 40:27you'll know I'm I'm off focus with this Papa John's special
- 40:31great night, though. It's game night, Chiefs and
- 40:33Bears, your Bears, Trent and it's so go to papajohns.com, get
- 40:38your pizza and have have some fun.
- 40:39Sounds great. Thanks for doing this all
- 40:41training camp, Mitch. Appreciate it, brother.
- 40:44We'll be in your inbox. In a couple weeks, yeah.
- 40:46Absolutely Will. I'll e-mail you.
- 40:47Thank you, Mitch. Thanks brother.
- 40:49Yeah, good to talk to you. Mitch Holtz is the voice of the
- 40:52Kansas City Chiefs as a curtain that comes down on training
- 40:54camp. 2025, hour 2, Tom Caker, Heather Burnside from Dublin.
