- 0:00Back on the Women's Basketball Coaches Show. Time to get to know some old
- 0:03friends like Tandy Cardoza, who's back on the Yukon staff. And lucky you
- 0:08you started two weeks before you went to Europe. You poor thing. You
- 0:10had a chance to go, and it's great to see it. It was
- 0:13an awesome trip and it definitely started at the right time. I feel like
- 0:18the last time I was here, the same thing happened. We had gone
- 0:21on our first European trip like two weeks after I had started, So definitely
- 0:27a fun way to start. What was the most fun part of your trip
- 0:31would you like most? I think I liked the ziplining. That was a
- 0:39lot of fun the ziplining. Obviously going to Venice and doing that, but
- 0:46I think we just did a lot of fun things that that trip. But
- 0:49the ziplining definitely was my favorite. How is your role change now from first
- 0:53time to second time here in stories? What are you doing differently if anything?
- 0:57Well, obviously this position is not allowed to go on the road and
- 1:00recruit, so still working with Morgan with the guards, but everything else is,
- 1:07you know, pretty much the same, you know, other than going
- 1:11out recruiting, just trying to do my best to help in any way I
- 1:15possibly can. Tinny what you learn about yourself in your time as a head
- 1:19coach in Philly that I had a lot of the same qualities as Gino.
- 1:26I felt like, you know, one thing that I noticed that I became
- 1:29more sarcastic as a coach, but definitely grew, you know, just being
- 1:37there as long as I was there, maturing as a coach in different aspects.
- 1:42Got to see a lot of different things and a lot of different things
- 1:45thrown at me. But I definitely think I grew over the last fourteen years
- 1:49there. You got a really good guard group and a very deep guard group
- 1:53to deal with this time around. And it's not gonna work. It's hope
- 1:57they stay healthy. I mean, you know what they've been through. What's
- 1:59it like coach in this group? Oh, it's a lot of fun.
- 2:00I mean, the talent is unbelievable right from the from Paige John down.
- 2:07You know, we have so many guys that are capable of helping on any
- 2:10giving night and can put points on the board or you know, defend whatever
- 2:17it is that we need. We have someone that can do that. But
- 2:21definitely have a lot of great shooters. Yeah, that's for sure. What
- 2:23about pages basketball, IQ, it seems like it's pretty it's pretty durn good.
- 2:28Yeah, she's definitely a coach on the floor, you know, as
- 2:30talented as she is, and she can score the basketball, she's also really
- 2:36good at making sure her teammates are in the right positions and just being that
- 2:39vocal person. You know, she's an extension of Gino and that's always a
- 2:45great quality to have when you have, you know, one of your best
- 2:47players that you know is an extension of you. You mentioned the good shooters,
- 2:53but also you get an outstanding freshman guarding kk Arnold. Seems like she
- 2:57goes she has a pretty good motor. Is this work case now as a
- 3:00freshman maybe like with Maria or even back in your day when you coached Renee,
- 3:05She's got to slow them down a little bit. You know, her
- 3:07speed is definitely an advantage. She definitely comes in and changes the game for
- 3:13us and gets us easy buckets. But just making sure that she knows when
- 3:16to go fast and when to slow it down. And I think she's learning
- 3:20that right now. But she has a good pace to her and her teammates,
- 3:24you know, finding ways to get open and and being available for and
- 3:30when she does dribble penetrate. What are some of the big things you're trying
- 3:32to impress upon these young ladies this season differently that maybe. I mean,
- 3:37I know you weren't around last year, but you know the personnel. It's
- 3:39kind of goals this year to try to pick up the pace full court,
- 3:43try to push transition a little more. Yeah, I think I think what
- 3:46all of us, we're focused more on the defensive side. We know that
- 3:49we can put points on the board of I think what's gonna change is our
- 3:53defensive effort. I mean, we've always been a great defensive team, but
- 3:59just picking up that intensity so that if we do struggle shooting the ball some
- 4:03days, that we know that we can rely on our defense to help us.
- 4:08Tanya, has Gino changed much since you were here first time? No,
- 4:11he's still the same. He might have mellowed out, mellowed out a
- 4:14little bit, but he's still very much the same Geno. What's up with
- 4:17our Boston teams, Tanya, I know you're a Massachusetts girl. We root
- 4:20for the Red Sacks. We well, you root for the Patriots. I
- 4:23root for the Giants, So we won't go there. I mean, but
- 4:26things have changed a little bit from all the success we've had most definitely,
- 4:30and it's been so frustrating. You know, I watched the game. Oh
- 4:34my goodness, these Patriots they're they're killing me. You know, our defense
- 4:39is doing a great job, but after a while they just get tired and
- 4:43the offense has to find ways to put points on the board. The Celtics,
- 4:46they're looking good. I got off to a good start. I like
- 4:48the the addition of Holiday. I think our experience at the guard position is
- 4:56really good with Holiday and White. I think this year is going to be
- 4:59the year for us. The game of women's college basketball TINYA has really grown
- 5:03by leaps and bounds. Of course, this program really set the bar very
- 5:08high. And you know, you got your friend Don in South Carolina raising
- 5:12the bar. LSU's raised the bar a lot of a lot more good teams.
- 5:15Boy, It's really it's it's hard to win now, Yes, it
- 5:16definitely is, and it's good for women's basketball. I feel like last year,
- 5:21especially the hype around it is definitely built going into this season. So
- 5:28we just got to continue to grow the game and put quality teams out there
- 5:31that people really want to come out and watch. Who's the of all the
- 5:35players that you've ever coached here, who doesn't get enough credit for what they
- 5:39did? Here? Is their player or two doesn't get enough credit? Hmmm.
- 5:46I think they all get what they deserve. But someone that might stand
- 5:53out a little bit, maybe Svetlana. You don't hear about her as much
- 5:58as Svetlana. I mean, look, she's a three time All American first
- 6:00one. Yeah, so I would probably say Spatlana. But again, I
- 6:08don't know. There's a lot of them that deserve everything that they have gotten.
- 6:12But just looking at the wall, I'm sure if I don't look at
- 6:15the wall and I actually thought about it, probably be someone else. To
- 6:17see what a lot of these young ladies have done after basketball, You've got
- 6:21to be really proud, oh, super proud of all the success that they've
- 6:25had. You know a lot of them coaching on the NBA side or in
- 6:30NBA offices. That's awesome. You know, Sue just be in the face
- 6:33of almost everything right now, but really proud. Shade the head coach at
- 6:39Vandy. Yeah, it's awesome to see the success that so many of them
- 6:44have. Ready to go for another season. I'm sure these young ladies are
- 6:47sick of practicing against one another. Yeah, I think we're all excited to
- 6:50get started next week and play against somebody else. Indeed, Tony, good
- 6:56to see you, welcome home, thank you. All right. That's Sunny
