- 1:15You have no enemies.
- 1:17No one in the world is your enemy.
- 1:19There is no one you need to hurt.
- 1:21That's a quote from the manga Vinland saga we're going to be talking about today in our Faces behind you series as we discuss the characters behind the main characters and some of our favorite franchises.
- 1:33Thor's is awesome.
- 1:34DJ Agrees.
- 1:35That's the end of the episode.
- 1:36Hope you guys enjoyed it.
- 1:37Yeah, that's good.
- 1:39Yeah, I am Joshua.
- 1:43I'm just here to introduce the Pod Almighty, the one who started it all back before dinosaurs.
- 1:47He created a podcast about dinosaurs, and that's how we got the dinosaurs.
- 1:51The one and only TJ Tabriz.
- 1:52One Blackwell.
- 1:53How's it going?
- 1:53Good.
- 1:54Yeah, I feel like that's like more than paleontologist.
- 1:57I was gonna say paleontologist, but then I'm like, no, if you spoke them into existence, I.
- 2:02Studying them doesn't quite feel appropriate.
- 2:04You know, it's like, yeah, I think there's.
- 2:06Why would you need this thing that could.
- 2:08That can really make a person is dinosaurs.
- 2:11Yeah.
- 2:12Anyway, so we're gonna talk about what we've been geeking out on lately before doing anything else.
- 2:18I have very slowly been trying to make it through that last season of the Boys.
- 2:22I just haven't cared for it after, like, season two.
- 2:25But, like, I feel committed at this point, you know, gotta see it through.
- 2:29I like the messaging and everything.
- 2:30It just.
- 2:31Like the tropes and everything just.
- 2:33Yeah, like the tropes and the gimmicks and everything.
- 2:35It just.
- 2:35It's like, okay, you can only see someone get beat up by a penis so many times without being like.
- 2:41And, you know, some points just.
- 2:43Okay.
- 2:45Yeah.
- 2:45What about last week?
- 2:48You've been geeking out on anything.
- 2:50Yeah, yeah.
- 2:52Tekken 8.
- 2:53It really is.
- 2:54Is great if you.
- 2:55If you want to get into something that is more complex than, like, real life.
- 3:02Yeah, that actually sounds terrible.
- 3:04I want something less complex than.
- 3:06Yeah, don't play Tekken.
- 3:08Yeah.
- 3:08Well, I'm just gonna watch some Disney movies.
- 3:10Yeah, that's my new.
- 3:11Geeking out.
- 3:12Preparing to go to Disney World at the end of the year.
- 3:14Yeah, really am.
- 3:16I'm so excited.
- 3:17So, guys, consider rating reviewing our show wherever you get your podcast.
- 3:21If you like things that are just people talking about things, there's no reason not to vote for this with your ratings.
- 3:27Words are hard, guys, and it will help me come up with better words if I can work less in podcast more.
- 3:33And the only way to do that is view rate and review our show so more people Think this is important and I can spend more time on this than work.
- 3:42A lot.
- 3:43Small donation of like $130,000 a year.
- 3:47Yeah.
- 3:47Will allow the two of us to just stop working.
- 3:51We'll just do this for you.
- 3:54Yeah.
- 3:54True, true.
- 3:56Speaking of small donations, we do want to thank one of our financial supporters today.
- 3:59I'm shouting out Ethan overcash.
- 4:01Ethan, you're amazing, dude.
- 4:02Thank you so much.
- 4:03I've met him before, love him.
- 4:04I'm hoping to meet him again at geek camp here Lutheridge, near the end of this year.
- 4:08So if you guys want to know more about that, maybe I'll remember a link in the show notes and if not, follow us on social media because every so often Will just takes over and posts about that event
- 4:16because he gets really excited about it.
- 4:18We're also really excited about Will, so that's fair.
- 4:20If you want your own shout out like Will and Ethan, you can become an official member of sitsmarke Ecology by going to our website.
- 4:26The link is in the show's description and you can learn more about that there.
- 4:29Same website.
- 4:30You can buy a T shirt, you can, you know, leave a one time donation.
- 4:34You can find some other bonus content.
- 4:36The T shirt for this year's annual theme, the faces behind us looks really good.
- 4:42I love it, especially in purple because it looks good in purple.
- 4:45Things that look good in purple make me happy.
- 4:47Yeah.
- 4:47So if you want to check that out, that's also on our website and you know it's only going to last the rest of the year and now we're more than halfway through it so now saying that means something.
- 4:58Yeah.
- 4:58Gotta hurry.
- 4:59Yeah.
- 5:01So check out that T shirt, some of the other one, other designs, etc.
- 5:05If you want to hear more of us talking about the faces behind us, the people that inspire the main characters from our franchises.
- 5:12Same just down below description, there's a different link for that.
- 5:15Lots of links down there.
- 5:16Lots of ways to participate in what we're doing, hear what we have to say, geek out with us and just, you know, enjoy all the geeky goodness together.
- 5:24Yeah, we appreciate all of you who take the time to do such a thing.
- 5:29And now we're going to jump into the main topic of today's episode Finland Saga.
- 5:35So before anything else, a lot of our listeners maybe aren't huge into manga or anime.
- 5:41Like I feel like when you're talking about like Star wars or Lord of the Rings, you don't have to stop and explain what you're talking about, but I feel like you Might.
- 5:47You might need to.
- 5:48For this.
- 5:49So, tj, what, like, what's the premise?
- 5:51What is Vinland Saga?
- 5:52When did you first read it?
- 5:54Tell us something about this.
- 5:55Yeah, so Vinland Saga is kind of like a manga adaptation of.
- 6:01That's a good way to frame this.
- 6:03The discovery of America, the Vikings, discovery of America, Leif Erikson's journey, kind of, sort of.
- 6:10That's the driving force.
- 6:11At least that's why it's called that.
- 6:15So Vinland is the name that they use to refer to the new continent in the 9th century, 11th century.
- 6:24So we follow Thorfinn, the main character of Vinland Saga when it starts.
- 6:30He's super young, just Viking doing Viking things.
- 6:34And at the time, oh, who was the king at the start?
- 6:38I honestly don't remember these names.
- 6:40Not Harold.
- 6:41The nice thing about, like, manga and comics is I could do what I do in real life and remember people's faces and have no idea what their names are.
- 6:47Yeah.
- 6:47But it is a little bit more relevant because Vinland Saga is kind of like an alternate history manga because it is heavily based off of real world history, English and like, Norse specifically.
- 7:00So there was a lot of times when I was reading it around be like, oh, yeah, I know that.
- 7:04I knew that happened.
- 7:05I remember that.
- 7:06I wasn't there, but I remember reading about it and I was there.
- 7:11But it's really good story about orphans.
- 7:15Been around since before the dinosaurs.
- 7:17Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was there.
- 7:18Probably started Vikings too.
- 7:20You did a Viking podcast before Vikings?
- 7:21No, I did not.
- 7:22Yeah, I did not start the Vikings.
- 7:23That's.
- 7:24That's problematic.
- 7:26Okay, fair enough.
- 7:28Yeah, yeah.
- 7:29But Thorfinn is our main character and we follow him through his path in life from Viking to pacifist to explorer, and he makes a pit stop through Slave on the way there, like many Vikings did.
- 7:45So great, great, phenomenal story.
- 7:50If you haven't read it, you should.
- 7:52For a first manga, I think it's great.
- 7:55If it is your first, it'll probably be really hard for you to pick up a second, but hey, that's just the cost, you know?
- 8:03But it is really phenomenal.
- 8:04I probably started reading it in 2018, I want to say, in college.
- 8:10I started reading it because I'd caught up on Berserk and I wanted to read something that was like, more.
- 8:18More mature, you know, like kind of not in the same vein as Berserk, but with the same tendencies, same audience in mind, and everything said, read Vinland Saga and Vagabond, which is also good, but on a permanent Hiatus.
- 8:35So Vinland Saga, which is now finished, is better.
- 8:39Definitely better.
- 8:40I like being able to read things that are finished.
- 8:42Yeah, it's awesome.
- 8:43Yeah.
- 8:44But I was, you know, I was reading it before it finished, which was also really great.
- 8:48Being excited to look forward to something like this was awesome.
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:52I feel like.
- 8:53Actually, I feel like I would have been okay watching this, like, season that I didn't even watch the anime.
- 8:57Like, I watched part of it.
- 8:58I didn't either.
- 8:59It moved too slow for me.
- 9:00Which one piece.
- 9:01And that's the only time I've ever really think I've had that problem where.
- 9:04But this is moving too slow.
- 9:06Yeah, yeah.
- 9:07I had to read the book cards on the table.
- 9:09I have no clue what the anime is like.
- 9:11No idea.
- 9:12The few I've seen were like, it was good.
- 9:15But I like for context, super adhd.
- 9:18I hyper fixate sometimes.
- 9:20I watched like two or three episodes.
- 9:21I was gonna like read as I went and I just needed to know what happened.
- 9:24Way too bad to sit there and try to watch it.
- 9:27I read way faster than I could watch something.
- 9:28So I just like hyper fixated on it.
- 9:30My first time reading, I think was literally last year.
- 9:33I started the anime way back when y' all did an episode about it for something else.
- 9:40Oh, the year.
- 9:41Yeah, yeah.
- 9:42There was an annual theme one year of world religions and y' all covered it.
- 9:47And I started the anime and I was like, this is really good.
- 9:49It just didn't stick.
- 9:51And then last year I was like, I'm gonna do it.
- 9:53I think when I started trying to read the manga and watch, I was like, oh, if I just read the manga, I make it through this so good.
- 9:58So I've read it twice in a year and it is not a short series.
- 10:02I mean, it's like 250 volumes or chapters.
- 10:06Not even something.
- 10:07Not even chapter something.
- 10:09But It's, I think 247, I want to say.
- 10:12But yeah, I guess that's long.
- 10:14I guess that's for me.
- 10:15I'm used to one piece is almost at 2,000.
- 10:21So some of the main characters.
- 10:21We're probably only going to really talk about the first 40, 50 ish chapters.
- 10:26We'll touch on the other stuff, but I think we're probably going to focus there.
- 10:29I am.
- 10:30TJ might go further.
- 10:31Not sure.
- 10:32But like, I'm thinking about the story of Thors, particularly as it pertains to Thorfinn, Thorkell and Askeladd.
- 10:39And I might be mispronouncing these names because again, didn't watch the anime.
- 10:43That's pretty good.
- 10:44Sweet.
- 10:46Yeah.
- 10:46So we're gonna be talking about that because Thors had one of, if not the most poignant like on scene death that I've seen.
- 10:56Probably the most poignant on anime.
- 10:58Although one piece.
- 11:00Not sure.
- 11:00But yeah, you guys get the point.
- 11:02It happened.
- 11:03It was waitful.
- 11:04And I'm like, man, that happened so early on.
- 11:07How?
- 11:08What?
- 11:08I was confused because the way you guys talked about it in the other episode, I was like, thought this was gonna happen near the end of this series.
- 11:15This is the beginning.
- 11:16This is how it starts.
- 11:18Yeah, it really is just how it starts.
- 11:20Was it in the first episode of the anime?
- 11:23I think it was for sure.
- 11:25It didn't like the first chapter of the manga.
- 11:28I was like, how you barely know anything.
- 11:30But you do find out more as you go.
- 11:32And the interesting thing is you find out more from his son a little bit who's like the main protagonist.
- 11:38But I feel like you find a lot more from other people who were either his enemies or fought alongside him who disagreed with the lifestyle he chose.
- 11:44In the end, you learn more about him from them than you do his son.
- 11:48And it's like they really respect him, Even his enemies.
- 11:50Like, I respect this guy and I don't know, I thought that was really cool.
- 11:54And just seeing how that made impacts on other people who weren't necessarily impacted in the way that you usually think of it, like, oh, yeah, I'm going to be like him.
- 12:01It was more of a.
- 12:02I respect that guy.
- 12:03And even if I'm not going to join that side all of a sudden, I know that there's a level of honor to this thing that actually matters.
- 12:10Yeah.
- 12:10I look up doors a lot.
- 12:12That's kind of the person I'd like to be, you know, like six foot eight.
- 12:18That would be cool Again, always.
- 12:19You break up height every time we talk.
- 12:21But it's funny because if I'm.
- 12:22I'd have to look up to him because he was huge.
- 12:24Yeah.
- 12:25I mean, everyone basically, yeah.
- 12:28But like.
- 12:29Yeah, yeah, basically.
- 12:32But it's.
- 12:33He's super cool and he just.
- 12:34He lived that life so strongly that everyone couldn't help but notice.
- 12:40Yeah, well, so I think too, what's really cool is like a lot of times when a big character dies, it's like either to show you how evil the bad guys are or to show that he was that valiant,
- 12:51that he made the sacrifice.
- 12:53And I just don't feel like it was either.
- 12:55Like in a weird way, like the bad guys, really.
- 12:57Yeah.
- 12:58They're bad, but they weren't that bad.
- 12:59They weren't the worst bad guys in the series by any means.
- 13:02And like, he wasn't just sacrificing himself to save somebody.
- 13:05He was just didn't want to hurt people, basically is why he died.
- 13:09And it's like, oh, is that actually that important?
- 13:12And I think that's what the rest of the series kind of tries to answer.
- 13:15Yeah, I think it succeeds.
- 13:17Yeah, I do.
- 13:18Six Atlantic.
- 13:19Not a main point, But I do want to say too, I usually don't like reading about or like talking about, like, honor shame cultures.
- 13:26I'm just like, oh, I don't like this.
- 13:28This show portrays it in such a way where I'm like, this doesn't feel as toxic as you see it.
- 13:32To me, a lot of Southern Americans, it's kind of toxic, that honor shame thing.
- 13:37We call you names until it's peer pressure or whatever.
- 13:40Or I have to do this to prove I'm tough.
- 13:42And it's just not that the honor shame in this, I'm like, I don't like honor shame as a system because it feels like it makes everything transactional, which makes true altruism harder, which is something I value.
- 13:54But I watch this going, ah, I don't know, man.
- 13:57This particular honor shame system, you still get Thors.
- 14:00You get Thor kill.
- 14:01You're like a lot of people.
- 14:01I'm like, I can't read all of these chapters and walk away thinking they're not incredible people, even though you know they're not real, but still.
- 14:09Yeah, they're based on real people.
- 14:11The Snorlssons are real people.
- 14:12Yeah, that counts.
- 14:13Yeah.
- 14:14Yeah.
- 14:14The Snorlssons are the family that Thors and Thorfinn, I guess Thorkell are based on.
- 14:21But they historically are the reason that we have so much Norse mythology.
- 14:26Snorri Snorlson was instrumental in keeping that mythos alive, which is, by the way, which is Thor's dad.
- 14:34Snorri Snorlson is Thor's dad.
- 14:36Crazy grandpa's getting thrown in.
- 14:39But so I mentioned we want to focus on Thors, Thorfinn, Thorkell and Askeladd.
- 14:45If you had to give like a one sentence summary of each of these characters so people know for reference who we're talking about.
- 14:52Yeah.
- 14:53Who are Thors?
- 14:53Thorfinn, Thorkell and Askeladd.
- 14:55Thors is the father of the protagonist and the main driving force behind his internal conflict.
- 15:04Thorfinn is the protagonist, young Viking growing up and realizing that his dad was correct.
- 15:12Thorkell is the great uncle of the.
- 15:17Of the protagonist of Thorfinn and super huge, super buff, super strong, super Viking.
- 15:25So cool, so cool.
- 15:27Just super cool guy.
- 15:28He wrestles a bear and wins.
- 15:31It's one of those, like, he shows up.
- 15:33I'm sorry, Thorkell.
- 15:34To me, he showed up and I'm like the annoying frat guy of Vikings.
- 15:40Two pages later, I'm like, nah, this guy is like, this guy's just great.
- 15:44I don't know, man.
- 15:45Yeah, yeah.
- 15:47And Askeladd is, for at least the first half of the series, the main antagonist who, you know, further enforces Thorfinn's inner conflict.
- 15:57He's the one who's responsible for killing Thors.
- 16:00Yeah.
- 16:01Which for me, and I don't know if this because, like, I'm just a freak, because, like, I'm weird, but even when I read it, it felt like going back to like Harry Potter.
- 16:09And it's like I'm supposed to suspect Snape the whole time and I'm like, nah, this guy's good.
- 16:14I don't know why, but this guy's good.
- 16:16You know, like just kind of tell.
- 16:18Yeah, but not.
- 16:19He's not good.
- 16:20He's good for Thorfinn, but he's not good.
- 16:22He's definitely a bad guy, but he's not evil.
- 16:25Yeah, that, that's, that's what I mean.
- 16:28Not beyond the amount that they're all evil, which is a little bit.
- 16:32And that's why Thor's attaches himself to that, you know, that.
- 16:37Oh, what's, what's a good word for it?
- 16:39Stoicism and inaction, as he does because of that guilt.
- 16:44But that is what we're going to talk about next because of Thors life and change.
- 16:50Going from one of the strongest Vikings around as a part of the Chams Vikings to a pacifist who refuses to hurt people, who throws aside his weapon, says, hey, this is how a warrior should live.
- 17:04This is how you're supposed to live.
- 17:06I have no enemies.
- 17:07We are all, you know, we're all people.
- 17:10It was kind of his point.
- 17:13But the strength with which he lived that life is what had such a strong effect on Thorkell, who is, you know, at the time, legendary Viking general, who's just kind of, you know, if you can afford it, hire
- 17:26Thorkell and you'll, you'll get the job done.
- 17:29Askeladd, who just genuinely could not understand why someone with so much power as Thors would cast that all aside.
- 17:37And Thorfinn, who, by the way, can we pull that picture up again of Thors As a pincushion standing on the boat.
- 17:47Thorfinn, if you're watching Thorfinn, is sitting like.
- 17:50Yeah, like, right there.
- 17:52Thorfinn just had to watch.
- 17:55Yeah.
- 17:56So, yeah, pretty tragic.
- 17:58Yeah, pretty, pretty tragic.
- 18:00And he's young.
- 18:00He's super young.
- 18:01He's like 12 when that happens.
- 18:05And he just has to live with that and fight against that ideal that his father upheld because he can't wrap his head around it.
- 18:12He just becomes a super violent, super cool kid.
- 18:16Yeah, until he becomes cooler and less violent.
- 18:19Yeah, you've come cooler in less violent.
- 18:21But he's so cool, which.
- 18:23Really.
- 18:23So I think that's what provides the, like, some of the most interesting relationship dynamic is between Thorfinn and Askeladd.
- 18:30And it's because of this moment where Askeladd's like, oh, this guy really was committed to nonviolence.
- 18:35And then you have this kid who's like, honor shame culture, but he's like, I'm gonna defeat you, Askeladd.
- 18:39And I was like, okay, come along.
- 18:40I'll give you a chance to fight me every so often if you do these things for me.
- 18:45Refuses to ever kill the kid, knowing that the kid's whole mission is just to kill him.
- 18:49So it's kind of a really weird antagonist relationship there.
- 18:52Yeah.
- 18:53And the reason Askeladd's plan, I think, if I'm remembering this right, was to get.
- 19:00He was trying to get Thors to break on that oath that he took and lash out against them.
- 19:06And in watching him not do that, realizes that he was wrong.
- 19:11And that's what encourages him to, like, take Thorfinn under his wing and teach him what life is like and life is not good.
- 19:19You know, this is the Middle Ages.
- 19:21Life kind of sucks, especially for Vikings and mercenaries, because Askeladd's not even a Viking.
- 19:27It's a mercenary, which is different.
- 19:29Yeah, yeah.
- 19:30Because he's not really good or bad, you know, Deadpool.
- 19:35He's a deuteragonist, technically, I believe.
- 19:38Yeah, yeah.
- 19:38Instead of a merc with a mouth, though, it's a merc that's honor bound and heartless.
- 19:43Axel, that's such a weird character.
- 19:45Okay, we need to move along a little bit.
- 19:48Thorfinn, though, we see him most of the time.
- 19:51We see him in his, like, teenage era here.
- 19:53The first, again, 40, 50 chapters that I really wanted to focus on.
- 19:56But you do see him afterwards.
- 19:58And so I already mentioned that how weird that relationship with Askeladd is.
- 20:02Askeladd dying really changes the narrative of Thorfinn and The funny thing is, I'm convinced that the reason Askeladd never killed Thorfinn was because of Thors.
- 20:12And I'm convinced the reason Askeladd eventually died and didn't risk Thorfinn's life in his plan again, goes back to the impact Thor's had just by virtue of his own character.
- 20:23So I guess, in a weird way, so we see how Thor has impacted Askeladd.
- 20:27How did Askeladd really change Thorfinn and who he was and what we see after those 40 chapters that I wanted to focus on.
- 20:34And now I'm asking you about everything that's not that.
- 20:36Yeah, yeah.
- 20:38So it's really interesting.
- 20:40The.
- 20:41The biggest change that Askeladd causes in Thorfinn is kind of the message that Thors tried to teach him through dying.
- 20:52Accomplishing that goal kind of let Thorfinn focus on what that meant and what that meant for his father.
- 21:00And it destroyed him with guilt, basically.
- 21:03And they lost, of course, and he became a slave.
- 21:07And that caused a little bit of character development.
- 21:09And it's during that time where Thorfinn was like, oh, oh, man.
- 21:13Okay.
- 21:14My dad was right.
- 21:15My dad was right the whole time.
- 21:16I have no enemies.
- 21:18There's no one on Earth that is my enemy.
- 21:21And he stopped using weapons.
- 21:22And he didn't.
- 21:24He doesn't pick up another weapon for the entire series not to use.
- 21:28At least he'll pick them up to say, hey, we don't need these.
- 21:32Yeah, he does that.
- 21:33I feel like he still embraced violence slightly more than his dad.
- 21:36I feel like.
- 21:36I feel like he was still like, no, when it's necessary, I'm going to do it.
- 21:40Yeah, his dad was never that.
- 21:43Which, I don't know.
- 21:43Like, I feel like a certain level of pragmatism, you guys, know, like, I'm not a big fan of utilitarianism, but stand on virtue.
- 21:50But if something's just totally impractical, maybe don't be stupid also, you know?
- 21:55And by the end of the story, though, he does reach that point where he's like, violence is never the answer.
- 22:00Violence can't be the answer.
- 22:02But that's only, like, the very end up until that point.
- 22:05He's like, yeah, weapons are lame, but these hands are for everybody.
- 22:10Which, honestly, was a much cooler fighting style.
- 22:13I thought being a kid and using two knives and just running around like a demon is.
- 22:18Was pretty.
- 22:18Pretty cool and funny.
- 22:19I do think those first 50 chapters would be a much more fun video game.
- 22:23Yes.
- 22:24Yeah.
- 22:25Yeah.
- 22:25All right.
- 22:26So a lot of the.
- 22:27If it was all adapted.
- 22:28A lot of it would just be sailing.
- 22:29Yeah.
- 22:30And not like fun sailing, but with good music, hopefully.
- 22:34I mean, Viking.
- 22:35Viking music.
- 22:35Viking music school.
- 22:37Viking metal.
- 22:38Okay, fine.
- 22:39So we kind of already went over Ask Lad.
- 22:42So I'm skip that here and just ask you.
- 22:44Thorfinn.
- 22:45I mentioned to me at first it came off as like frat dude, and then two pages in, I'm like, oh, this dude rocks.
- 22:51Dig a little bit deeper.
- 22:52So who's Thorfinn?
- 22:53We kind of learn, sorry, Thorkell.
- 22:56How do we kind of learn about his relationship with Thorfinn's dad after Thorkell kind of beats the crap out of Thorfinn, but, you know, after a few encounters, he's like, I respect this kid.
- 23:08You're a lot like your dad.
- 23:08And like.
- 23:09Wait a minute.
- 23:09What?
- 23:11Yeah, tell us something about that.
- 23:12What his relationship with Thors was, how Thors impacted Thorkell and how Thorkell eventually makes a difference on Thorfinn.
- 23:19Again, relationships are all entangled here.
- 23:22See that will.
- 23:23See, I mentioned the thing, so I'm.
- 23:26Sorry, I lost my thoughts.
- 23:28Oh, I was gonna say train of thought, but it's all gone.
- 23:33Thorkel, honestly is like that big, super strong Viking guy, but he's also, he's a stand up guy.
- 23:40He's a real stand up guy and he loved his nephew Thors and he respected him because Thors was the only person stronger than Thorkell basically in the entire world.
- 23:53Yeah.
- 23:54So he took that and he was like, okay, well, if Thors really died for what he believed in, maybe he believed in something that made some sense.
- 24:02He didn't agree ever.
- 24:05He stayed himself.
- 24:06But that respect again allowed him to change his perspective a little bit.
- 24:11And then when he meets Thorfinn, he's like, oh, you're Thor's son.
- 24:14We're cousins, you know.
- 24:16Yeah.
- 24:17And they're like fighting to the death at the time.
- 24:20Like, it's crazy.
- 24:22It's a lot of fun, it's awesome.
- 24:23I think Thorkell, this is gonna sound really counterintuitive to that whole thing where I'm like, honor, shame, culture and toxicity.
- 24:29Thor kill.
- 24:30Just wants to fight people, man.
- 24:32Like them just a big sport.
- 24:34He's having fun with it.
- 24:35Like, he's literally a few times choosing what side of the war he's on based on who can I fight the most?
- 24:41What's the hardest challenge?
- 24:42He wants a challenge.
- 24:43He wants to fight.
- 24:44He knows his purpose in life.
- 24:45He's committed to it.
- 24:46That's what he's going to do.
- 24:47So, like, I love Thorkell for that.
- 24:49Even though, you know, I don't love violence and I don't like the whole honor shame, making us do things that maybe aren't always the best thing.
- 24:54But Thorkell Thorkell is pretty awesome.
- 24:56And then like one of the coolest moments is actually this to me, I really like this scene.
- 25:01I call it a scene.
- 25:02Is there still a scene in if it's manga.
- 25:04Anyway, Thorkell, Askeladd and Thorfinn are all kind of in this one place.
- 25:10Askeladd's injured, Thorfinn and Thorkell are about to have a big fight and all three are present and Askeladd's kind of giving Thorfinn tips to win this fight against Thorkell.
- 25:20And Askeladd's kind of been the antagonist the whole time.
- 25:22So it's kind of weird.
- 25:24Tj, could you unpack like what's going on in the scene and like what changed that?
- 25:29Because after this they all kind of team up and move forward together into.
- 25:33I don't remember where they go from here.
- 25:34In my mind, big city time.
- 25:37But that's not what it's called.
- 25:38Yeah, yeah.
- 25:39Could you unpack some of this scene?
- 25:41I can try.
- 25:42I'm no literary analyst, but it serves as a good representation of that conflict that I was talking about in Thorfinn where he's trying to choose or trying to understand his dad's point of view and also his own role
- 25:58in the world where he's probably the most dangerous 16 year old alive, but he's fighting against like a real living legend.
- 26:10And it's at this moment that he starts to.
- 26:12Well, this arc, this little mini arc, these few chapters where he starts to understand that Askalette has kind of become his father figure and that he's learned a lot from him, a lot more than he wanted to because,
- 26:25you know, it's for him, he's just in this to kill him.
- 26:27Just in it to get his vengeance.
- 26:29So this is a major turning point for Thorfinn to get him to the point where he is amenable to change.
- 26:37Yeah, you worked that a lot better than I was going to be able to.
- 26:40So thanks.
- 26:41They had to get in their hits while they could also knip tier at this point Canute be the king of England.
- 26:48Do you think a lot of this setup was made?
- 26:50Because, man, wouldn't this scene be cool?
- 26:52And it was.
- 26:53Yeah, he had to get those out of the way because, you know, the back half of this story is like slow burn.
- 26:59And you know, Thorpin has leader and learning to be like his dad, but in his own way.
- 27:04And.
- 27:04Yeah.
- 27:05Which is cool.
- 27:05Just a different kind of story.
- 27:07Very different kind of story.
- 27:08Great.
- 27:09So good.
- 27:10It's so good.
- 27:11But it's not a battle Shonen, you know?
- 27:15Yeah.
- 27:16It gets very mature later.
- 27:17So they got to get all the cool fights out of the way.
- 27:19Yeah.
- 27:20Which I was all about.
- 27:21I love the cool fights.
- 27:22And then at that point you're just committed to the characters.
- 27:24So then you're gonna be there for the drama and the philosophical quandaries and the character arcs, even if there isn't a lot of cool fighting all the time.
- 27:32Yeah.
- 27:32Oh, it's great.
- 27:33So, yeah.
- 27:34We do gotta ask, as we do with all this, if the face behind you was gone, what would the rest of the story be like?
- 27:39So without Thors, what happens to Thorfinn, Askeladd and Thorkell tj.
- 27:45So.
- 27:46Well, they all probably die in battle.
- 27:48I'll say.
- 27:49I don't know.
- 27:50Thorfinn, he might die before he gets old enough to get into battle.
- 27:53Honestly, if he's just in that peaceful village by the time they get there, he gone.
- 27:57Yeah.
- 27:58Well, I mean, if it wasn't for.
- 27:59Because he wouldn't learn from Askeladd or anything.
- 28:01He wouldn't have learned how to fight.
- 28:02If it wasn't for Thors, Thorfinn literally wouldn't exist.
- 28:06Yeah, that's true.
- 28:07He wouldn't be born fair.
- 28:09Yeah.
- 28:09The other two, I feel like, are easier.
- 28:11I feel like Askeladd just remains immersed.
- 28:14I think Askeladd lives longer.
- 28:16Truly.
- 28:17Honestly, I feel like he doesn't have as much heart.
- 28:19He's just gonna do where.
- 28:20Go where the money is.
- 28:21He probably lives longer that way, but he just never has a character arc.
- 28:24I feel like he never changes.
- 28:26I mean, Askeladd and Thorkel realistically probably would have ended up fighting each other.
- 28:31Oh, Thorkel would have killed him.
- 28:32No problem.
- 28:33Maybe.
- 28:34Probably.
- 28:35I don't think.
- 28:35I think Thorkell have an issue.
- 28:37Maybe.
- 28:37Probably.
- 28:38But Thorkel would have fought until he died.
- 28:41Oh, absolutely.
- 28:43And he would have had a blast doing it.
- 28:44He would have died a lot sooner.
- 28:45It's funny, I think Thor kill would have died a lot sooner.
- 28:47As Glad would have lived a little bit longer.
- 28:50Yeah.
- 28:50Not a lot longer.
- 28:51Yeah.
- 28:52A little bit though.
- 28:53You know, money.
- 28:54Yeah.
- 28:55But yeah.
- 28:56And I don't think.
- 28:57Yeah.
- 28:57Neither of them, I feel like, have growth.
- 29:00Like, I don't think Askeladd becomes the person who's willing to.
- 29:02To die for a cause.
- 29:04I don't think Thorkell ever changes at all to Be beside a leader.
- 29:08Like, I don't think he ever has a commitment to anyone.
- 29:11I think he just remains committed to fighting.
- 29:13Whereas the series as we have it, I feel like he does develop a little bit of a commitment to the king, a little bit of commitment to Thorfinn.
- 29:19And I don't think you ever see that from Thorkell.
- 29:22If it wasn't for Thors and all these other interactions.
- 29:24Yeah, yeah.
- 29:25And it goes beyond, like, devotion to his brothers in arms, which he always had.
- 29:30Yeah, that's not what we're talking about.
- 29:32Yeah, yeah.
- 29:33Just great art.
- 29:34This is like some of the best character arcs, I feel like.
- 29:36Just good story, man.
- 29:39So just to recap, the four people we're talking about here, Thors, his role is basically, he was a great warrior once, went to live a peaceful life and be family day, and was forced back into war and dies.
- 29:50Thorkell, great leader, just signs up whichever army is, has the biggest challenge that he can fight the most people because he loves fighting.
- 29:58Eventually he changes a little bit on that role.
- 30:00But Askeladd is the mercenary who ends up taking on a fatherly role because of some kind of sense of guilt or something, maybe where he's a father figure to the kid who wants to kill him.
- 30:12And then Thorfinn, especially for the first.
- 30:14We'll say this first chunk of the story we're talking about has to be mentored by someone he wants to murder, then steps into a leadership role trying to live out nonviolence.
- 30:23So of those four, whose role would you most want to take on if you had to step into their role?
- 30:29Yeah, just like me.
- 30:31Yeah.
- 30:31Just.
- 30:31DJ Blackwell is going to step in to the role of Ask Lad.
- 30:36Yep.
- 30:36Yep.
- 30:37I love fighting kids.
- 30:39I'll do it all day.
- 30:40I'm going to mentor this kid who wants to kill me.
- 30:42Yep.
- 30:43It's going to be a great time.
- 30:44You know, sometimes that's how what I feel like our job is.
- 30:47Yep.
- 30:47Yeah.
- 30:48Yeah.
- 30:48It's out of context for some people, but funny as hell for others.
- 30:53Man, I have a really hard time answering this.
- 30:56Yeah, none of them really have easy lives.
- 30:58I'm gonna go with Thorkell because I do love a challenge.
- 31:02And eventually he kind of becomes the number two, the advisor.
- 31:05After going through some stuff, putting in the time, if you will.
- 31:09I feel like.
- 31:09I feel like as far as roles go, I would never want to be Thorkell.
- 31:13Personality type, wildly different.
- 31:15Kind of like his role, though.
- 31:16I'm gonna lead the army.
- 31:17We're gonna do some fighting, and eventually I'm gonna Be someone's number two hand.
- 31:21And you would, you would die.
- 31:22Oh yeah.
- 31:24But like that's why I don't like I'm gonna get his strength too, taking his role.
- 31:28I'm also gonna ask for a story.
- 31:31Yeah, yeah.
- 31:32Well, you could get their abilities if you want.
- 31:33You just keep your personality.
- 31:35Okay.
- 31:36Yeah, yeah.
- 31:36I'll be Thorndale as well.
- 31:38Sweet.
- 31:39Yeah.
- 31:40He seems like he has the most fun out of anybody, I think.
- 31:43Yeah, yeah.
- 31:43I mean honestly though, I would, I would probably be asklet anyway.
- 31:47Yeah, Honestly, I see you kind of not as an ask lad in the sense of like you're just do stuff for the money but like as far as like you could.
- 31:56You.
- 31:56You being a mentor to somebody who hates you and you're just like, I don't care that you hate me.
- 31:59I could see you doing that.
- 32:01I don't think I could do it.
- 32:02I care too much about people liking me.
- 32:04Really don't like money.
- 32:05Yeah, that's the other problem.
- 32:07That's the funny part.
- 32:08You're allergic.
- 32:09That's cash.
- 32:10That's the least like him.
- 32:12I am the aspect we have the least in common.
- 32:15Yeah, it's funny.
- 32:16You wouldn't do it for money, but you just kind of do it.
- 32:19You want me to mentor this kid?
- 32:20What skill?
- 32:20We go, okay, sure, why not?
- 32:23Yeah, yeah.
- 32:24Me, I like, I love the idea of like I'm just going to lead this team.
- 32:27Not necessarily into battle.
- 32:28I just like the idea of leading teams.
- 32:30Not necessarily like one on one mentorships, but the idea of leading a team, I love that.
- 32:34That's fun.
- 32:35And then the idea of being someone's number two, I like that too.
- 32:38But something about that direct like mentor, mentee.
- 32:40I don't want to do that, man.
- 32:42I think I've done that enough times.
- 32:43I'm just tired of it.
- 32:44I think that's what it is.
- 32:45Yeah.
- 32:45I'm sick of this.
- 32:46I get why Jesus had the 12.
- 32:48If it was just him and Peter, he might have killed Peter.
- 32:50You know?
- 32:50Definitely.
- 32:52That's a joke.
- 32:53I do not think Jesus would have murdered Peter.
- 32:55He would have.
- 32:56Sorry to all.
- 32:57Our Catholic Father and Thomas Doubt me again.
- 33:03Listen, I'm just going to throw this out here.
- 33:05This is a random.
- 33:06I have some Bible pet peeves for those who don't know this is a random one.
- 33:10I hate people saying doubting Thomas.
- 33:12I get where it comes from because he was like, oh, let me touch the wound.
- 33:15Throw it out there.
- 33:16I'm a Thomas apologist.
- 33:17That's what I am.
- 33:18When Lazarus was Dead.
- 33:20All the apostles are like, oh, Jesus, why would you do this?
- 33:22This is stupid.
- 33:23He's already dead.
- 33:24And Thomas is like, nah, Jesus has this.
- 33:26He was the only one who believed in him.
- 33:28He doesn't deserve doubting Thomas.
- 33:30That nickname just isn't merited.
- 33:31I'm sorry.
- 33:32The rest of them doubted first.
- 33:33What do you want to call it?
- 33:35Trust but verify Thomas.
- 33:38Yes, Trust Thomas.
- 33:41Anyway, so Thomas the truther.
- 33:45Oh, man.
- 33:45So we mentioned before, this series has a lot to do with, like, the honor shame kind of culture.
- 33:49How important do you think honor is to how we influence others?
- 33:52Because the reason Thorkell really saw what Thors did wasn't because he was like, oh, sacrifice is important, or, oh, his beliefs were good.
- 34:00He didn't care about the guy's beliefs.
- 34:02He was like, oh, there was honor that he was willing to die for his beliefs.
- 34:06So how important do you think honor actually is in our ability to influence other people?
- 34:10It kind of depends on the other people.
- 34:13Or your definition of honor is.
- 34:15Yeah, so bad question.
- 34:18Move on.
- 34:21But yeah, it really does depend on your definition of honor.
- 34:23Because for some people, it's a big deal.
- 34:25You know, for some people, it allows them to.
- 34:28Even if they disagree with you, like, okay, but he's, you know, he's a good guy.
- 34:33So maybe I should listen sometimes.
- 34:36Yeah, Yeah.
- 34:37I think for me personally, it matters a lot.
- 34:39But yeah, again, I do think it just depends on who you're trying to influence, because I have several friends who are utilitarian, you know, whatever.
- 34:46I've already mentioned several times, I hate utilitarian arguments.
- 34:49Some friends who believe that way act on that.
- 34:51But I know them like they are people who are trying to do good.
- 34:55I trust them, I respect them.
- 34:57Don't like their argument.
- 34:58Don't like why they're doing what they're doing.
- 35:00I could be wrong.
- 35:01And so out of honor, I'm like, hey, they're committed to that belief.
- 35:05Sure, I'm down with that.
- 35:06The thing that makes me most mad at, like, movies and stuff or like, whatever are people that I won't ever listen to are people who aren't going to do what they say they do or will say.
- 35:14I believe this, but then act otherwise.
- 35:16Right.
- 35:16Like, to me, part of my biggest problem with a lot of, oh, this is bad on a.
- 35:21Well, hey, we're not on the church unity show right now.
- 35:23Ah, yeah, sorry.
- 35:25We have another podcast that's about church unity called the Whole Church Podcast.
- 35:27This is not applied to that podcast.
- 35:30Yep.
- 35:30Yeah, but I have trouble sometimes listening to More conservative Christians, especially Southern Baptists.
- 35:36Because I'm like, the amount of times you say you're about, you know, sexual ethics, you care about, you know, answering to other people or doing the right thing, purity.
- 35:45And then the amount of times you're caught covering up sex scandals and stuff, I'm like, do you care about that?
- 35:51I have a much harder time believing what they say at face value because I've seen them act otherwise.
- 35:56Then you have, as an example, someone else on the show, another host who is a Baptist.
- 36:00Christian.
- 36:00Ashley.
- 36:01I disagree with him all the time.
- 36:02He says something that he believes, something I trust wholeheartedly.
- 36:06He's going to act in that belief because I know Christian, and he's a man of honor, which is.
- 36:10Which is worrying sometimes.
- 36:13Yeah.
- 36:13But I mean, it's also why, like, if I have one advice, I'll still go to Christian even though I disagree, because at least I know he's going to be straight with me.
- 36:20Some people just tell me what I want to hear.
- 36:22Christian won't.
- 36:24But if you're a lobbyist, stay far away from Christian.
- 36:27Ashley.
- 36:30Amen.
- 36:31Verily.
- 36:32Verily.
- 36:32All right, one last.
- 36:33One last question.
- 36:34Digging to dig a little deeper before we wrap this up.
- 36:36One of the coolest things in this series is how it portrays Christianity.
- 36:39And it's not like, hey, everyone convert to Christianity.
- 36:41They were right.
- 36:42Jesus is the answer.
- 36:43But it just kind of shows, like, the idea of Christianity that is nonviolent, that is turning the other cheek, that is loving your neighbor of not having enemies.
- 36:51And even though it's not like an evangelist tool, like, that's not what the show is trying to do.
- 36:55It's interesting how it portrays that and how you see some of the characters reacting to, hey, we thought this was weak.
- 37:01You're going to just turn the other cheek, let them fight you.
- 37:04But then you see images like, I got to put it back on the screen.
- 37:07Sorry.
- 37:08You see images like this, and you're like, yep, can't call that weak.
- 37:12Thor's being willing to be shot several times, and I'm just not going to kill someone because that's not what I do, not what I believe.
- 37:19You can't look at that and say it's weak.
- 37:20And how many people were really challenged by that because they thought nonviolence was weak?
- 37:26And then you see someone willing to die for that belief, and it's like, well, I can't call that weak anymore.
- 37:30It's crazy.
- 37:32So I want to.
- 37:33T.J.
- 37:34how does the way we see Jesus change the way that we See things like strength and honor, whatever we mean by those things.
- 37:41Right.
- 37:43I think it is.
- 37:44Honestly, this is a really great allegory for it is the way that we see Thors and know Thor's strength and see how he expresses it stoically.
- 37:54Yeah.
- 37:55He expresses it through steadfast belief in his ideals.
- 37:59Yeah.
- 38:00And that's, you know, hopefully.
- 38:03I don't know how you see Jesus.
- 38:06I think Jesus was very strong.
- 38:08Oh, yeah.
- 38:09Getting told you're gonna die, but like, don't worry about it, it'll be fine.
- 38:13And then being okay with going and dying, that takes a lot of strength.
- 38:17Yeah.
- 38:17And yeah, this probably helps that you.
- 38:19You're the son of God and everything,.
- 38:21But yeah, he's also fully man.
- 38:24Yeah.
- 38:25I.
- 38:26I don't like how the verse gets used sometimes, but I.
- 38:28And we don't have like an explicit thing in the Bible that says this is why Jesus did that.
- 38:32But I think it's really telling that Jesus had some of the disciples pick up swords.
- 38:36Then when the Romans go to take him and Peter uses the sword that Jesus, okay, we need to have weapons.
- 38:41Jesus goes, put that away.
- 38:42Like, I believe that was written in the Bible to show the intentionality where Jesus said, no, I could have chose to fight back, but I'm stronger than.
- 38:50That's kind of where I.
- 38:51How I read that.
- 38:52But I don't think the Bible explicitly says that's why he did it.
- 38:55Yeah.
- 38:56So it really depends on if you view Jesus Christ as strong and honorable, I guess.
- 39:03Yeah.
- 39:03Yeah.
- 39:04Fair.
- 39:04Maybe you don't.
- 39:06Fair.
- 39:06And also just going to shout out another episode that I haven't done yet, but I've done yet.
- 39:10If you're listening, where I probably have talked about what I like in the new Spider man movies, the last two with Tom Holland actually where like.
- 39:21And it starts in Far From Home, where instead of defeating all these old Spider man villains, which are like, you're like, oh, they're going to show us that Tom Holland's as good as the other Spider man because he
- 39:29can fight them.
- 39:30Nope.
- 39:30He's going to cure them all.
- 39:31He's going to help his enemy.
- 39:32He's going to love his enemy.
- 39:34Sounds pretty Christian.
- 39:35It's not a Christian movie.
- 39:36You know, Spider man never claims to be Christian, but I'm like, dang.
- 39:39And then in the newest Spider man film, the same thing happens.
- 39:43And in a little bit more of a dramatic way.
- 39:46I don't want to say exactly because like, spoilers.
- 39:49But what happens in that film, I'm like, this is someone who is committed to loving their enemy unto death.
- 39:56And that's so powerfully Christian, even though it's not explicitly Christian.
- 39:59And then the cool thing in Vinland Saga is it is explicitly Christian.
- 40:03And I just.
- 40:03To me, I see moments like that and I'm like, yeah, that ain't weak.
- 40:08Yeah.
- 40:08And unless it's really funny when it, like, starts to happen too, because unless you're, like, aware of what you're reading in the time period you're reading in, it just kind of comes out of nowhere.
- 40:18Like, oh, they're Christian now.
- 40:20Vikings, Christian churches here, a lot of people don't put those together.
- 40:24But it is pretty funny when it just pops up.
- 40:27And historically, it's actually missionary.
- 40:30Just weird.
- 40:31Yeah.
- 40:33All right.
- 40:34Any.
- 40:35Anything else you want to add about Vinland Saga?
- 40:37How strong Jesus is your creation of the dinosaurs before we start wrapping this up?
- 40:42Yeah, read Vinland Saga.
- 40:43It is really good.
- 40:45Yeah.
- 40:45Totally worth it.
- 40:46I said it's long, but it's not like super long.
- 40:48It's like, it's not.
- 40:50If you're committed to reading in the evenings, probably a good week.
- 40:53You get through it.
- 40:54Not even.
- 40:55Yeah, if you're tj, like, less than a day.
- 40:58If you're a normal person, probably.
- 41:02Anyway.
- 41:03All right, let's go and wrap this up.
- 41:04I have fun.
- 41:06I love doing these episodes.
- 41:07I like talking about the faces behind and seeing, like, what inspires the characters and.
- 41:11Yeah, it's good times.
- 41:12We are going to do a bonus episode really quick, quick.
- 41:14After this.
- 41:15We're going to ask what other modern stories display violent and honor centric cultures with a generous perspective.
- 41:21You know, I mentioned usually that, like, honor shame thing comes off pretty toxic, but they displayed it pretty well.
- 41:26Here we're going to talk about some of the other stories we think in pop culture maybe display that.
- 41:30Well for now though, dj, if you had to give a recommendation for others, video game, comic, anime, whatever, what's something else that you think people should check out?
- 41:40Honestly, Vagabond.
- 41:42Vagabond's great.
- 41:43It's a manga about Miyamoto Musashi.
- 41:46But if you're like Josh and you don't want to read anything that's not finished, do not read Vagabond.
- 41:52The author is not going to finish it for as long as his other series, Slam Dunk, is still making him money.
- 42:00He loves Slam Dunk more than he loves Miyamoto Musashi.
- 42:03So he's gonna keep doing that.
- 42:04Yeah.
- 42:05Yo.
- 42:05So earlier I mentioned I was gonna find what I was thinking of for the historic Fiction author that I like for my recommendations and I did.
- 42:12Stephen Pressfield is the author's name I want to recommend specifically.
- 42:17There's a few that I really like.
- 42:19Gates of Fire was good.
- 42:19A Man at Arms though.
- 42:21Has to do with someone trying to deliver one of Paul's letters during Roman times.
- 42:25A lot of action.
- 42:27Bible adjacent.
- 42:28Pretty cool, so.
- 42:29Pretty cool.
- 42:30Yeah.
- 42:30I highly recommend all of Steven Pressfield's books actually.
- 42:33So that's our recommendations for today.
- 42:35Check them out if you want.
- 42:36You don't have to.
- 42:37You do have to rate and review the show though you were contractually obligated when you listened.
- 42:41Don't know if you know, sorry.
- 42:43No, but it does help us a lot when you rate and review wherever you're listening.
- 42:46Spotify, Apple, class, whatever.
- 42:47It makes people think that we're important like the algorithms.
- 42:49So when people search stuff, we're more likely to show up.
- 42:51Helps our show grow and it's free for you.
