- 0:02Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The Patriots Training
- 0:10Speaker 1: Camp Cast is your source for all the news from
- 0:12Speaker 1: Patriots training Camp.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:18Speaker 1: have you covered?
- 0:19Speaker 2: What did I miss yesterday?
- 0:20Speaker 1: Now here to review today's practice? The writers of Patriots
- 0:23Speaker 1: dot com.
- 0:25Speaker 3: That's right, Paul Perlo, Mike do so with you. At
- 0:29Speaker 3: the conclusion of day seven and the second time, Mike
- 0:33Speaker 3: that we've seen the team in full pads, I thought
- 0:37Speaker 3: this practice was maybe not quite as physical and intense
- 0:41Speaker 3: with all the running that the first one with pads was,
- 0:44Speaker 3: But the energy I thought over the last half of
- 0:47Speaker 3: this workout was probably about as high as I've seen it.
- 0:50Speaker 3: A lot of jaw jacking going on between the offense
- 0:54Speaker 3: and defense, a lot of competitiveness. There was actually some tackling.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I I'm not sure it was supposed to be by design,
- 1:00Speaker 3: but I thought the last hour or so today was
- 1:04Speaker 3: was pretty fun stuff to watch.
- 1:05Speaker 2: It was. I enjoyed it.
- 1:06Speaker 4: We had one on ones, you know, offensive defensive line
- 1:09Speaker 4: going against each other. We had defensive backs and linebackers
- 1:12Speaker 4: covering wide receivers, running backs, tight end, so a lot
- 1:15Speaker 4: to see and I got to be honest, it's the
- 1:17Speaker 4: first day I've felt encouraged about the offense. I thought
- 1:19Speaker 4: they're starting to strength some plays together. Certainly the last
- 1:22Speaker 4: I guess, the second and last sequence before they actually
- 1:24Speaker 4: went on the goal line in red zone Eleven's was
- 1:27Speaker 4: a nice sequence they had. The first play was you know,
- 1:29Speaker 4: contested catch to Parker over Gonzales.
- 1:32Speaker 2: I know some debate was he pushing off what they
- 1:34Speaker 2: called it or not? You know, it's a bread and
- 1:36Speaker 2: butter play for them at this point. I'm not really
- 1:37Speaker 2: that would they have called it or not?
- 1:39Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely in question. I've seen many times that does
- 1:41Speaker 3: not get called.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and we know that they got that in the bag.
- 1:44Speaker 2: But still they completed it.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Tough play for Christian Gonzalez, you know, Juju Smith Schuster
- 1:48Speaker 4: then in the back of the end zone probably you know,
- 1:50Speaker 4: just one of the best red zone plays that we've
- 1:52Speaker 4: seen so far.
- 1:52Speaker 2: So a nice touchdown for them. They were all really excited.
- 1:55Speaker 4: Juju talked about it after practice that you know, the
- 1:57Speaker 4: defense have been getting them, they finally got them. So
- 2:00Speaker 4: just to you know, I know a lot of people
- 2:01Speaker 4: were kind of hyping things up on offense yesterday. I
- 2:03Speaker 4: didn't really feel that way, but today I feel like,
- 2:07Speaker 4: you know, there's some progress in their starting to strength
- 2:09Speaker 4: in places.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I would agree with you. I thought that that
- 2:11Speaker 3: string was was probably the highlight, and then even after
- 2:15Speaker 3: that in terms of enthusiasm, more defense, pushing back on
- 2:19Speaker 3: the On the final goal line plays, they could not
- 2:22Speaker 3: really run it in. They got in I think on
- 2:24Speaker 3: the last of four attempts that looked like Pierre Strong
- 2:28Speaker 3: sort of squirted his way through low. But even that
- 2:30Speaker 3: was a struggle. And these plays were from the one
- 2:33Speaker 3: so they the defense did a good job of bowing
- 2:36Speaker 3: up there when they needed to, so some good stuff.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Like to me, what really stood out to me was
- 2:41Speaker 3: the energy in the enthusiasm that was generated that started.
- 2:45Speaker 3: I thought with the one on ones. During one on ones,
- 2:50Speaker 3: the ball really, I mean, you should complete virtually every pass,
- 2:53Speaker 3: and that was the case. The wide receivers, with the
- 2:56Speaker 3: entire field to work with and no pass rush to
- 2:59Speaker 3: prevent them from getting open. Uh, did a great job
- 3:02Speaker 3: of getting open and they were happy about it. And
- 3:04Speaker 3: I don't think that the defensive backs were happy with
- 3:07Speaker 3: the results, you know, with the the the ensuing celebrations
- 3:10Speaker 3: that were going on, so that I think sort of
- 3:13Speaker 3: started it and then that left the I thought the
- 3:15Speaker 3: intensity at that level the rest of the way, which
- 3:18Speaker 3: is really nice to see. I thought there was some
- 3:19Speaker 3: good Jews today, just real quick again, no time Montgomery,
- 3:25Speaker 3: you know that's five in a row now, terres Hall
- 3:27Speaker 3: for the third time. Still not seeing any cold strange
- 3:32Speaker 3: you know in any of these reps. And a lot
- 3:33Speaker 3: of guys heading down to the lower fields for some
- 3:37Speaker 3: rehab work, you know, Trent Brown still not really doing anything,
- 3:41Speaker 3: Judeon really still doing a lot of that stuff. Taekwon
- 3:44Speaker 3: Thornton today spent a good amount of time on the
- 3:46Speaker 3: lower field. So some of the Remondra didn't get any
- 3:49Speaker 3: carries again with the pads on, so some some good
- 3:54Speaker 3: news bad news there. I would say that with the
- 3:56Speaker 3: intensity in the in the overall energy level I thought
- 3:59Speaker 3: was great in the last half, but I'd like to
- 4:01Speaker 3: see some of these guys maybe get get healed up
- 4:04Speaker 3: and get back in the mix.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:05Speaker 4: There was one one one in particular, one on one
- 4:07Speaker 4: where I think DeVante Parker put like six moves on
- 4:09Speaker 4: a guy and it was about seven seconds into.
- 4:11Speaker 2: The revent and then they completed it. They were like
- 4:13Speaker 2: all right, but Pop Douglas.
- 4:15Speaker 3: They had the nineteen ninety four Dallas Cowboys offensive line.
- 4:18Speaker 3: That play would have gone off without a hitch. But
- 4:20Speaker 3: other than that, I'm not sure.
- 4:21Speaker 4: YEA nice downfield catch by Pop Douglas though, you know,
- 4:24Speaker 4: so they had some places trade got a point out tree.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Nixon too had nice play with Zappie too downfield.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Nice nice throw by Yeah, and I thought, you know,
- 4:32Speaker 3: for the first time really even going back to the spring,
- 4:34Speaker 3: Jack Jones was doing a lot of chasing today, but
- 4:36Speaker 3: a lot of biting. We've seen that a little bit,
- 4:38Speaker 3: the over aggressiveness. I thought Nixon easily got past them
- 4:42Speaker 3: on that deep ball that you're talking about, Mike, and
- 4:44Speaker 3: there was another one in the end zone that he
- 4:46Speaker 3: kind of got left behind. A lot of Marcus Jones
- 4:49Speaker 3: today too in the in the secondary with Christian Gonzales,
- 4:53Speaker 3: which I thought was interesting. Some different looks and we're
- 4:55Speaker 3: getting some mixing and matching as Evan Lazart comes in.
- 4:58Speaker 3: So before we just talk about it anymore, this minutia, do
- 5:01Speaker 3: you agree with Mike and I would kind of. We
- 5:03Speaker 3: were enthused about the enthusiasm at the practice today.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Yeah, Look, I wanted to come in here because yesterday
- 5:09Speaker 5: I ride on the offense for two straight hours on Unfiltered.
- 5:12Speaker 2: And you wanted to come make sure.
- 5:15Speaker 5: I'm not I don't have too big of an ego
- 5:18Speaker 5: to think that they listened to me rag on them
- 5:20Speaker 5: and that's what fueled their best practice of training camp
- 5:22Speaker 5: so far. But maybe I'll take credit for it anyways.
- 5:25Speaker 5: But the biggest thing is is that yesterday I try
- 5:28Speaker 5: to give it to people straight, and yesterday I felt
- 5:30Speaker 5: like a little bit overblown. How great there are a
- 5:35Speaker 5: good offensive.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Day this I couldn't believe the reactions that we got
- 5:40Speaker 3: after we were done with our radio right.
- 5:41Speaker 5: And now today the reason why I didn't want to
- 5:44Speaker 5: go there yesterday is because I was like, let's wait
- 5:47Speaker 5: and see if they can actually put together a really
- 5:50Speaker 5: good day on offense. And today I thought that they
- 5:52Speaker 5: put together a really good day on offense. And it
- 5:55Speaker 5: wasn't just as I'm not tired to take away from him,
- 5:58Speaker 5: because he was good, Mac and the and the starters
- 6:00Speaker 5: were good all three rounds. We were kind of lighting
- 6:04Speaker 5: up the defense at one point, and that is I
- 6:07Speaker 5: think what you really haven't seen from this team in
- 6:11Speaker 5: I want to say, almost years at this point is
- 6:14Speaker 5: a day in trading camp where you can say a
- 6:17Speaker 5: clear decisive victory for the offense over the defense, if
- 6:21Speaker 5: you're into that sort of thing. And I thought what
- 6:24Speaker 5: really stood out to me out of all of it
- 6:26Speaker 5: with Mac is you started to see a lot of
- 6:30Speaker 5: the plays that Bill O'Brien, a lot of his core
- 6:33Speaker 5: concepts in the passing game, just hitting exactly how he
- 6:37Speaker 5: draws him up when he puts him on the whiteboard,
- 6:39Speaker 5: throws to kasiki to juju. Those are the types of
- 6:43Speaker 5: plays over the middle of the field that that's the
- 6:45Speaker 5: Bill O'Brien offense. That's that's when the ball is out
- 6:47Speaker 5: on time, how they create separation with different alignments and
- 6:51Speaker 5: you know, stack with stack alignments, bunches, things like that.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Those are the types of things that he really bases
- 6:57Speaker 5: his entire shotgun passing offense off of. And I thought
- 7:01Speaker 5: today they were clicking, they were hitting it on time,
- 7:04Speaker 5: they were getting open. There was guys that were legitimately
- 7:07Speaker 5: getting open.
- 7:08Speaker 3: I thought they were causing some confusion today, which may
- 7:11Speaker 3: be as important as anything because we know that you know,
- 7:13Speaker 3: they don't have that stud that's just gonna go out
- 7:16Speaker 3: and win every one on one matchup. I thought that
- 7:19Speaker 3: touchdown to Juju. Clearly there was a lot of pre
- 7:21Speaker 3: snap confusion in the secondary. Mills and Jonathan Jones were
- 7:24Speaker 3: going back and forth, they were moving. Jones was late
- 7:27Speaker 3: sort of adjusting to what Mills was telling him to do.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Something to keep an eye on. By the way, we've
- 7:31Speaker 3: talked a lot about this sort of on an abstract level,
- 7:35Speaker 3: what happens without Devin mccordy back there. You know, they're
- 7:38Speaker 3: telling us there's a lot of different guys that can
- 7:40Speaker 3: do that. So just something to keep an eye on.
- 7:42Speaker 3: I'm not going to pretend to tell you who was
- 7:44Speaker 3: wrong and why on that plate, but I just saw
- 7:46Speaker 3: a lot of talking pre snap and then a guy
- 7:49Speaker 3: break open for a nice touchdown, beautiful toe tap in
- 7:51Speaker 3: the back of the end zone. One of the best
- 7:53Speaker 3: players of the entire camp.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Out of everything that I think Bill O'Brien does that
- 7:58Speaker 5: i've seen now that we've got to actually watch a
- 8:00Speaker 5: Bill O'Brien offense in practice. His stress that he puts
- 8:04Speaker 5: on coverage rules, like in those types of situations with
- 8:07Speaker 5: the way that receivers release off the line of scrimmage,
- 8:09Speaker 5: you're covering a slot receiver, so you most of the
- 8:12Speaker 5: time expect him to break inside and then all of
- 8:14Speaker 5: a sudden he's breaking outside, but then he's breaking back inside.
- 8:17Speaker 5: And these types of things really confuse switches at the
- 8:21Speaker 5: line of scrimmage or you know, different types of ways
- 8:23Speaker 5: that defenses guard stacks, you know, two receiver sides, bunch formations,
- 8:29Speaker 5: things like that, and it makes it so easy for
- 8:32Speaker 5: the quarterback to see the receiver winning early in the
- 8:35Speaker 5: down because he knows, Okay, this guy's got body positioning
- 8:39Speaker 5: on the defender, He's going to break one way and
- 8:41Speaker 5: the defender is going to be you know, out leveraged,
- 8:44Speaker 5: and I'm just going to be able to make this
- 8:45Speaker 5: throw quickly. And those types of plays, Juju said at
- 8:48Speaker 5: the end of at his press conference, I asked him
- 8:51Speaker 5: about the touchdown and he was like kind of over
- 8:54Speaker 5: the moon about it, Like he was like, oh, he
- 8:56Speaker 5: finally We've been working on that, and we've been working
- 8:59Speaker 5: on it on the side field during special teams periods.
- 9:02Speaker 5: We've been talking about how can we get the defense
- 9:05Speaker 5: on this, and Mac made the check and we finally
- 9:08Speaker 5: pulled one over on the defense, and I think that
- 9:11Speaker 5: they were they were pretty elated about that.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think the group overall, and that was
- 9:15Speaker 3: my big takeaway today was I think that they felt
- 9:18Speaker 3: they felt good about themselves, and it probably was the
- 9:21Speaker 3: first time they could say that after a full week
- 9:23Speaker 3: of practices, we're going to be back at it here.
- 9:26Speaker 3: There's no no rest for the weary right now. It's
- 9:28Speaker 3: still every day. So we're gonna have practice again tomorrow,
- 9:32Speaker 3: same time. Nine five tip. As they say for turning
- 9:37Speaker 3: camp practices, we don't call it a kickoff because there's
- 9:39Speaker 3: no actual kickoff. So any any last uh.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Strange not no close strange today, you know, just worth
- 9:47Speaker 4: bringing up that.
- 9:48Speaker 2: But otherwise, I think they were good.
- 9:49Speaker 4: And you know, Tyric Pitts, their new addition to wide receiver,
- 9:52Speaker 4: was out there, made a catch.
- 9:53Speaker 3: I see kind a nice crosser from Tracey mcswili.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Yeah, so right in the mix there, and uh and otherwise,
- 9:58Speaker 4: I just I'm gonna we never talk about it, but.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna give Brandon Schoolers shout out. I just I
- 10:02Speaker 2: think it deserves to be highlighted.
- 10:04Speaker 4: They've had two one side kicks they've tried to swing
- 10:05Speaker 4: on him this this practice, you know, preseason schedule. He's
- 10:09Speaker 4: picked up both of them. It's just watching him in practice.
- 10:11Speaker 4: He's like a good player, you know.
- 10:13Speaker 2: I know that must regret asking. Yeah, I'm sorry, but
- 10:16Speaker 2: I do.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Think I want to highlight Brandon Schooler there for a second.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Did you guys do any line D line one on one?
- 10:21Speaker 3: Well, I didn't, You know, I wanted to talk to
- 10:23Speaker 3: you about that because that's not where you guys were
- 10:25Speaker 3: that definitively, so you could maybe talk about that. Uh,
- 10:31Speaker 3: we'll talk about it off there. I mean, I don't
- 10:33Speaker 3: want to drag the podcast too far, but I will
- 10:35Speaker 3: say end of practice, the goal line stuff, there was
- 10:37Speaker 3: some mixing and matching in the offensive line. Bill Murray
- 10:40Speaker 3: was out at times, they had Cody Russy. I think
- 10:45Speaker 3: Mafi Tonio Maffi was in where he has been, but
- 10:49Speaker 3: they sort of mixing and matching left guard, right guard.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Some changes really for the first time because it's been Mariy,
- 10:55Speaker 3: you know, I wonder if maybe he's nursing whatever was
- 10:57Speaker 3: bothering him at the end of that practice the other day,
- 11:00Speaker 3: or if it's time if these rookies, you know, Russy's
- 11:03Speaker 3: a second year guy, Mafy, maybe these guys took a
- 11:06Speaker 3: week and now they're ready to sort of sort of
- 11:08Speaker 3: assert themselves.
- 11:09Speaker 5: Yeah, those goal line run periods. That with this offensive line,
- 11:13Speaker 5: with how many guys are injured, that is a huge mismatch.
- 11:15Speaker 5: The Patriots defensive starting defensive line against all these backups
- 11:20Speaker 5: and rookies and things like that. The missing three starter,
- 11:22Speaker 5: that's a mismatch. But you mentioned the one on ones
- 11:25Speaker 5: just quickly. Kean White had by far the best one
- 11:28Speaker 5: on one pass rush rep during that period. Go outside inside,
- 11:33Speaker 5: move on Connor McDermott, and I don't think McDermott got
- 11:36Speaker 5: a hand on him, I mean just went right around him.
- 11:39Speaker 5: That was That was one of the better reps of
- 11:43Speaker 5: the period. And to the point about Bill Murray, he
- 11:45Speaker 5: got beat both times that he went in one on one.
- 11:48Speaker 5: So I do think that it's time Mafi is he's
- 11:51Speaker 5: just a cinder block, like he's just a stout identity raft.
- 11:55Speaker 3: That was the one that really stood out to us.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Out of those three guys, he he most looked the part.
- 11:59Speaker 3: So we'll watch that. I think it's time to start
- 12:02Speaker 3: really taking notice of who's playing in those spots with
- 12:05Speaker 3: those young guys and seeing if they're ready to move in.
- 12:07Speaker 3: So we'll be back tomorrow and we'll give you all
- 12:09Speaker 3: the latest at Patriots training camp.
