- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset coach, creative strategist, and also happen to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:28Hey everybody, good morning. So yesterday I had a collapse in
- 0:33the garden and it's due to the fact that this southern blight
- 0:39that is here in our soil can take off.
- 0:43And it's not everywhere in the South, but it is pretty much
- 0:47everywhere in the South. And it, it can take off when
- 0:53there's a combination of humidity and water and just the
- 0:58right conditions. And then all of a sudden things
- 1:01start to jet off. And that is exactly what
- 1:03happened overnight. It was, it was astonishingly
- 1:09quick. And so the tomatoes, you know,
- 1:12my coveted tomatoes that I work so crazy on, they are basically
- 1:18under attack right now. And I lost about 12 plants
- 1:24yesterday. Now, This is why, you know, in
- 1:27the beginning I said I'm going to plant so many because I need
- 1:31to make sure I'm prepared for when and if this happens.
- 1:33Well, it happened and it there are some out there.
- 1:38Now here's the crazy part about this.
- 1:40Yesterday I was out there and I was hysterical.
- 1:44When I tell you I was hysterical, that would be an
- 1:46understatement. I was crying.
- 1:49I was. And just so you know, if you
- 1:51hear noise, it's because I'm getting stuff ready to take out
- 1:55to the chickens and trying to get myself back on track.
- 1:58Because yesterday, as of last night, I was a mess.
- 2:01I was, I messaged my own coach. I was so upset because I had
- 2:07thought I did. You know, of course, everything
- 2:09the right way. And it doesn't matter how much
- 2:11you do right. What matters is science.
- 2:13And this is a combination of humidity and heat.
- 2:17So I had to pull them out right away.
- 2:21So 8:00 last night, I'm out in the garden and I'm pulling out
- 2:26plants and I'm trying to, you know, figure out what am I going
- 2:30to do? How am I going to do this?
- 2:33And I, I just was overwhelmingly taken, you know, just a back and
- 2:40over consumed by sadness because they were fine.
- 2:45I literally saw them earlier in the day and they were fine.
- 2:48And then all of a sudden they collapse and basically what this
- 2:51it's soil borne it. What it does is it chokes off
- 2:56how the plant gets water. So you have a completely fine
- 3:00plant and then all of a sudden, right where the soil touches
- 3:04the, the, the base of the stem, the collar is what it's called.
- 3:09It chokes it. It's like putting on a shirt and
- 3:11tightening the button and tightening the button and
- 3:13tightening the button until the person can't breathe.
- 3:15Well, that's what happens with water in these plants.
- 3:18So of course, they collapse. And no matter how much water you
- 3:23give them, it actually feeds the virus, not the plant.
- 3:27So it becomes madding. Now there are ways where you can
- 3:31go and you can cut the plant, take a cutting off of the plant
- 3:35that still maybe not collapsed and help that to reroute in a in
- 3:40water. Just take it out, put it in
- 3:42water, it will reroute. And so today that's a part of
- 3:46what my morning is going to be looking at the some of the ones
- 3:48that I couldn't tell how bad they were.
- 3:50I'm going to go out. I'm going to cut off some of the
- 3:53stuff I had to pull. And there's nothing wrong with
- 3:55the tomatoes. That's what's crazy.
- 3:56There's nothing wrong with the tomatoes.
- 3:57They just haven't become red or fully ripened.
- 4:00They haven't become the right size.
- 4:02So you pull them off and you can use them for things like, you
- 4:07know, fried green tomatoes, or you can use them for other
- 4:11things that you would want a green tomato for pickling.
- 4:15So I've got a lot of green tomatoes and I can do things
- 4:19with them, yes, but I still didn't get to where I wanted to
- 4:23be with all of it. So is this better than last
- 4:27year? Yes, it's much better than last
- 4:29year because I have huge tomatoes that are out there
- 4:32right now that even if I pulled those, they are exponentially
- 4:37bigger. Do I still have healthy plants
- 4:39out there? Yes.
- 4:40Did I pull out the sick ones? Yes.
- 4:42Did I move the ones that are in the bags that are healthy away
- 4:46from where other things are? Yes.
- 4:48And should that be in that soil? No.
- 4:52And sometimes things happen and it finds a way in.
- 4:56It could have been a dirty tool I could have not been using.
- 5:01I should have really been diligent with disinfecting the
- 5:04tool in between things because it can get on there.
- 5:08And I I was making cuttings and I don't, I know for a fact I was
- 5:13not sanitizing in between each cutting because I didn't have a
- 5:16problem and I wasn't thinking about it.
- 5:19So every time these things happen, there's something to
- 5:23learn. And for me, this was a huge
- 5:25learning 1. So I've probably got about about
- 5:30half my crop. That's OK right now, but we'll
- 5:34see. And I'm in the process of
- 5:37learning. I've debriefed it.
- 5:39I sat down, I bawled my eyes out.
- 5:41I sat down, I kept going. I used my ChatGPT to work me
- 5:46through the sickness, how to handle it, what to do.
- 5:50And there's no cure, by the way, but there are things I can do
- 5:54differently and better. And I will make a plan and I
- 5:57will move forward. And the point of today is when
- 6:00things happen, deal with them. Cry, be angry, be pissed off,
- 6:05say potty words. I certainly did.
- 6:07And then pick yourself up, make a plan and decide, OK, I'm going
- 6:13to be sad for 24 hours and then I'm going to get busy.
- 6:16And that's exactly what I did and that's exactly what today is
- 6:20about because it's what you do after that first 24 hours, in my
- 6:25opinion, that makes all the difference.
- 6:28So I hope you guys have a blessed day.
- 6:31I will be dirty, filthy and science ridden all day long
- 6:34while I figure this out and I will see you all tomorrow.
- 6:38Bye.
