- 2:30pistol with a silence around, a of fortune in a black satchel spelled death
- 2:35for the Big City Boys when they finally got together in Loans in Arizona,
- 2:38population eight h two on the pane of Raymond Chandler, outstanding author of crime
- 2:45fiction comes his most famous character. As CBS presented The Adventures of Philip Marlowe,
- 3:00and now with Gerald Moore starretist Philip Marlowe, we bring you tonight's exciting
- 3:05story, The Lonesome Reunion. At eight thousand feet on a clear afternoon,
- 3:19you can see enough Arizona real estate to become an authority on the subject.
- 3:23And as I huddled around a circle of window aboard an American Airlines flagship and
- 3:27gaped like a two weeks with pay vacationer at the carpet of sand stone and
- 3:30cactus, unrolling a slow inch at a time below, I was impressed.
- 3:35Also, I was thinking about a job which was providing both the switch and
- 3:38scenery and two CRISP one hundred dollar bills less the cost of a round trip
- 3:42ticket from LA to the capital city of Phoenix. But then at the thought
- 3:46of money, I stopped sightseeing and started to think about the work ahead and
- 3:49how easy it had sounded that morning in my office when Kay Gordon was something
- 3:53pretty and blonde but slightly tonished for twenty eight it hired me all in one
- 3:57bread marlow My brother Joe Gordon is in a room with the Granada Court Hotel
- 4:00in Phoenix, Arizona. In one hand, he no doubt has his usual
- 4:03smelly cigar. In the other a small suitcase filled with a mess of papers,
- 4:08all legal or proper. You fly there, pick up the suitcase,
- 4:12fly back for that two hundred dollars cash, Yes or no, Yes,
- 4:15on one condition, the papers? Do I get to see them? If
- 4:17I look, I go all right, you look good, I go goodbye.
- 4:24That was the way it started. An hour after breakfast lunch was alone
- 4:27in the the airport. Then it would wait until I'd seen mister Joe Gordon,
- 4:30a man who was willing to pay a lot for a little. My
- 4:35plane dropped out of the sky over Phoenix gently at three. At three point
- 4:40fifteen, I was in room one eleven with the Granada Hotel and only thirty
- 4:43six smelly inches away from the usual cigar. The man behind it was heavy,
- 4:46pale and maybe forty, and like his sister, Joe Gordon, was
- 4:49overbearing in a hurry. The smiler is the bag they used. The papers,
- 4:55stocks, bonds and mortgages in themselves worthless to anyone else. There now
- 4:59negotiable information to my competitors. They're priceless, satisfying, more or less meaning
- 5:03what exactly what is your line, mister Gordon. Oh, I'm a broker,
- 5:08one who bets on long shots when they come in. I don't like
- 5:11to split with the boys who sit in their hands. Anything else. Yeah,
- 5:15I've got some time to kill before I fly back, So I take
- 5:17the bag now or later. You take the bag now, okay, and
- 5:21don't let go of it until you're with my sister in La. I'm paying
- 5:25you money to stay away from my enemies, not to shop for trinkets.
- 5:29Oh and incidentally, my enemies also play rough, So wash your step and
- 5:33act smart, real smart. I still had two hours to kill when Gordon
- 5:43locked the bag and handed it to me after dropping the key in his pocket,
- 5:46So I decided to take a room there at the Granada Hotel, shave
- 5:49shower and stretch a sleepy clerk in the lobby. It was not in a
- 5:53hurry, nor did he hear anything I said the first time. So when
- 5:57I finally got to my suite on the second floor, which had as much
- 5:59ill ballroom is the inside of a life saving thirty of the idle minutes were
- 6:02already gone. I locked and bolted the door, checked all the windows,
- 6:06carefully and then peeled off my shirt, broke out my shavemaster, and reached
- 6:11for the knob on the bathroom door. But I never made it because as
- 6:15the door swung open, I caught a glimpse of a fist the size of
- 6:17a candleope standing for my jaw. I stay right there, Buster. The
- 6:23first time I swing, the second time I shoot, and I do both
- 6:26good equal nice. Everything all figured out ahead of time. Yeah, but
- 6:30it ain't very hard, especially when the guy he wrapped it shouts at all
- 6:34to a desk clerk, my era, which leaves just the three of us
- 6:38real cozy life. Three you, me and one hundred and twenty grand here
- 6:42in this bag. You way off face, brother. This bag's got papers
- 6:45in it, nothing more. They belonged to a businessman. I said something.
- 6:48Yes, you're very funny, look, Buster, Joe Gordon is no
- 6:51moral businessman and his real name is Joe Gordon. So after I leave,
- 6:57you go back to Sam Dietrich in room one level been and tell him that
- 7:00Marty stopped. He says, thanks, Oh, what for the one hundred
- 7:02and twenty thousand dollars I've been waiting two long years for? And also tell
- 7:08him and Gigi Ganther, who might still be around that Stoppka had it all
- 7:13figured. Like you say, malow ahead of time. I don't follow you,
- 7:16Bud. You're not supposed to just turn around, face the wall and
- 7:19listen carefully. You tell Sam Dietrich that I know he'd pull something like this
- 7:26just as soon as he got back into circulation. You got that. Yeah,
- 7:29yeah, word for words. Stop g yeah. Now all you have
- 7:32to do is remember Marty's Tapka said, remember, And he put that cattle
- 7:39up with fingers in the small of my back and shoved hard. By the
- 7:42time I got my feet again, both he and the black bag were gone.
- 7:45Had made Joe Gordon or Sam Dietrick my best bet. So I took
- 7:48the stairs at the ground floor fast and raced for the end of the carter
- 7:51in Room one eleven. When I threw the unlocked door open, I found
- 7:55something I hadn't counted on. A curtain flapping in the breeze of an open
- 7:59window, or nothing more. The desk draws, the closet, the bureau
- 8:03empty, and on an end table next to the telephone a bus schedule unmarked.
- 8:07At that I was beginning to get very mad at a private detective with
- 8:11Public Patsy named Philip Marlow. Then the telephone rang, and when I answered
- 8:15it, the operator said that she had a long distance call for Joe Gordon.
- 8:18I said, thanks, I'd taken Hello Sam, this is Kay Marlow.
- 8:24Yeah, honey, Joe Marlow is in brother Gordon. Remember. Oh,
- 8:28I can explain all that Marlow. Oh sure, sure, baby,
- 8:31but not now. Later, later, after you've had a chance to think
- 8:33up a few more live all right, all right, So I didn't tell
- 8:35you the whole story. What's the difference. Did you get the bag?
- 8:37I did, but I didn't get to keep it very long. Something ugly
- 8:41name Stopga wanted either rid or my life. So I made a quick decision.
- 8:43Stoca has the bag. Oh that's great. Yeah, yeah, isn't
- 8:46it? Though? One thing, baby, I'm the decoy with suitcase for
- 8:50some kind of Shenanigan that's wrapped around one hundred and twenty grand, which you
- 8:54and Sam Dietrick have. And there's a trio in the act namely Sam Dietrick,
- 8:58Marty Stop Gun One, g Ganta, Gig Marlow. Have you seen
- 9:01Gig have you made maybe? Yes? Maybe no? Why don't you come
- 9:07clean? It'd met you happy that Stopka got the suitcase from me while Sam
- 9:09beat it out of an open window. That my part of the job is
- 9:11over with. Come on, baby talk all right, I'll make it shorten
- 9:13to the point. You got two hundred dollars for doing nothing. Out of
- 9:18that, sixty ydd went for an airplane ticket. The rest is yours,
- 9:20right, go on, there's no need to Marlow. I'm finished, and
- 9:24so are you, so why don't you just be a good fellow and keep
- 9:28the change? So long? Sucker and kay Gordon hung up. I slammed
- 9:35the phone down, cut a tin twice, and went back to the unhappy
- 9:39business of getting mad at Marlow. But again I was interrupted. This time
- 9:43it was a newspaper, the Phoenix Herald, sticking farn Off out of the
- 9:46wastebasket under the telephone to expose the dateline, which made it exactly a week
- 9:52old. I picked it up and saw the two inches of story circled in
- 9:54pencil and slugged five released from state penitentiary. Sam Dietrich, forty one of
- 10:01Los Angeles, who was arrested in Lone of Arizona for the armed robbery of
- 10:05a general store in February nineteen forty seven, also was released today. Now
- 10:11everything was beginning to add with one high priced exception. Very few general stores
- 10:18in towns called lonesome keep one hundred and twenty thousand bucks in the till,
- 10:20even on a busy day. So I headed for the office of the Phoenix
- 10:24Herald and the chance that I could learn something about the cash involved from newspapers
- 10:28that were two years better than one week old. Thirty minutes later, I
- 10:37was in the back shop of a herald receiving facts willingly supplied by a sandy
- 10:41head liner type operator with a sad face who had never heard the word forget.
- 10:46Tripe. Mosster was the second National Bank of land comparty here in town,
- 10:50held up at one ten pm February cheven, nineteen forty cheven, but
- 10:54three men who took one hundred and twenty thousand dollars, none Mark Hanns twenties
- 10:58and fifties. One was badly wounded and run gunfight, but they all got
- 11:01away clean, no arrest, no suspects, rather than the usual rigamarola trying
- 11:07to pin the job and every two bitch stick up man hold in the next
- 11:09six months, no anything else, No thanks, I don't think. Say,
- 11:15wait a minute longsome Arizona, that unmarked bus schedule. Tell me,
- 11:18do you happen to know where something called lonesome is? And if so,
- 11:20how a guy could get there if he doesn't have a car. Sure,
- 11:22Jati seven miles west. You're here and the bush will do the trick,
- 11:26but not anymore today. Uh the only bush left an hour ago. And
- 11:30now, young fellow, you tell me something work? And Sam here is
- 11:33lonesome in the bush departure you got to do where the bank robbery was pulled
- 11:37two years ago? Where I stand right now? Dad, I can't say
- 11:41when I get the lonesome Ask me again, I may have the answer for
- 11:43you. I was thirty minutes running a car and in thirty minutes getting the
- 11:52lonesome population eight h two. I drove without seeing anything that could possibly be
- 11:58mistaken for Sam Dietrick. I was about to turn back when I saw something
- 12:01that brought my right foot down hard on the break was a brand new green
- 12:05mash standing outside a Motel California license plate. Got out of my car and
- 12:11got a look at a registration card wrapped around the steering wheel. It said
- 12:16Katherine E. Gordon the motel only had three kettles that showed any light.
- 12:22The first belong to the manager. In the second decay, close to an
- 12:24open window, I saw the man K was talking to. He was an
- 12:28ext convict and part time broke. I named Sam Dietrich. All right,
- 12:31all right, so Marlo knows he was set up for Martie Stoffka. Who
- 12:35cares? We're hearing so far? Stop givesn't And even when he does show,
- 12:39we'll be gone with a real black bag safe on our hand. Yes,
- 12:43but what about Gigi Saim? I told you Marlo mentioned his name.
- 12:46I told you to forget it. Parla must have been swinging in the dark.
- 12:48Gigi can't be alive, Kay. He was badly hurt when the stopped
- 12:52and I got clear of the bank. But why wasn't his body found?
- 12:56I don't know, Kay, I pulled you out a thousand times. Now.
- 13:00Now, look, honey, why don't you just relax and think of
- 13:03us a little Gigi's dead baby. There's only you and me, Sam.
- 13:07You know how I feel about that. I love Gig. The only reason
- 13:13I'm helping you. I don't want anything to do with this money. I
- 13:13only want to know for sure about gig. Kay, okay, hey,
- 13:18did you get a line on Leland Mills, the name that was on that
- 13:20mailbox two years ago? Yes, yes, yes, he owns the place
- 13:24and lives there alone, once upon a time, small ranch on the last
- 13:28block in town. Coming apart of the scenes, What about Mills himself.
- 13:33He's an older fer maybe fifty, lives close to the fireside day in and
- 13:37day out. Good. That means I can handle him that in trouble.
- 13:41And now look, baby, it's says seven. Now at nine this time
- 13:43will be fast asleep, and at ten I'll take care of everything. So
- 13:48why don't you just curl up there on the couch and think about nice things?
- 13:52Oh, nice things like what we like? The money I had at
- 13:54Leland mills place five hours after the boys and I took that bank one hundred
- 14:00and twenty thousand dollars that's soon going to be back here with me. You
- 14:03were belongs, and I took my queue and left because one Leland Mills was
- 14:11a man to be four one, while ten o'clock was still three hours away,
- 14:15I was ten minutes finding his place, which was on the edge of
- 14:16town, and another two locating the doorbell, which was the kind of pull
- 14:20to start a bunch of jingling inside. It was three pools later before the
- 14:24door creaked slowly opened, and what had to be Leyland Mills stood in front
- 14:28of me. It was shaggy gray hair curling on the side of his neck,
- 14:31a face with a thousand crisscrossed wrinkles, and dirty old clothes. Everything
- 14:35I'd expected, with one exception, ripped firmly in both hands and pointed directly
- 14:41if my head was a long, long rifle. Oh are you, mister
- 14:46Mills. Maybe well, I'm a private detective named Philip Mallow. Also someone
- 14:52who knows that there's one hundred and twenty thousand dollars in cash shitting here on
- 14:54your ground, one hundred and twenty thousand dollars to the penny. Yes,
- 14:58two years ago, mister Mills, the Phoenix Bank was rubbed by three toughs
- 15:01named Dietrich stopgn gg ganther gg. That's a queer name. It's not important,
- 15:05old man, but this is now, somehow or other, that stolen
- 15:09money was hidden here in or around your place, and tonight one of those
- 15:13men is d back to collect. That, of course, means trouble for
- 15:16you. You think we should call the law. No, not yet.
- 15:18If we play it smart, we can get the door spotted first and at
- 15:20least one of the three. All right, mister Morlow, if you're sure
- 15:24of what you're saying, I only hope you are sorry about this gun here.
- 15:28I don't like poachers on my land. Yeah, we all have our
- 15:31pet peeves. Now, mister Mills, I want you to sit tight till
- 15:35I get back, and no matter what happens, don't open that door for
- 15:37anyone. If you got that h yep, where are you going to town?
- 15:41Checking? The only two things that can possibly give us any unexpected trouble
- 15:45on a nasty man named Mardy Stopkin. The other guy I've never even seen,
- 15:48the elusive mister G. G. Ganther. In just a moment,
- 16:03we will return to the second act of the Adventures of Philip Marlow. But
- 16:06first, that elusive phantom voice will be back on CBS's great show sing It
- 16:11Again tonight, and the prize for identifying him is now climbed to a value
- 16:15of twenty four five hundred dollars. Yes for music, suspense and sensational prizes.
- 16:22Don't miss the Singing Again Show tonight. Over most of these same CBS
- 16:26stations, and now with Gerald Moore starred, we returned to the second act
- 16:30of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story, The Lonesome Reunion. I left Leland Mills
- 16:44standing in the door and worried my way back to town if Stopken Gigi Ganta
- 16:48had no more trouble getting lonesome than I did. A reunion about as quiet
- 16:52as a truckload of hot dynamite was due to take place any minute. I
- 16:56passed the motel where k and Dietrich could hold up and saw that Hakka moved
- 17:00into the stall between cabins and draped with a blanket to hide its California place.
- 17:04So they were thinking along the same line that I was. At the
- 17:08hub of town. I parked and started to case the lively spots on Main
- 17:11Street, which took me all of ten minutes at a slow walk, but
- 17:15a short side of the mouth conversation with a couple of resident sports revealed that
- 17:19the local underground stemmed from the Red Dog Cafe, a warped wood two story
- 17:25wiki up on the one side street in town. It was operated by a
- 17:29hard bitten blonde one hundred and sixty pounds of western motif, complete with stetson,
- 17:33red flannel shirt, hiccock belt, blue jeans, and the name Flora.
- 17:38She sat at a table at the back of the bar room, letting
- 17:41us cynical it to nobody else but my old pal stopped. I walked up
- 17:45behind him and when he turned around, I hung one on him, A
- 17:48good one. Love me, Jack. What do you think you do?
- 17:52Sorry, Flora? Nothing personal, that's got canny, no rock, husband
- 17:57and I joined. Come on, Hensome, I mean you me? Why,
- 18:00Flora? How can you say that? I just came in and asked
- 18:03my old pal here some questions. That's all. Here we go, Pal,
- 18:07come on, set up in that share, okay, Ki let me
- 18:10alone, say Flora. The only way stop your here knows how to start
- 18:12a conversation. Bring him another beer? What is all? When got spilled?
- 18:15You're right boy? When you see that, you dude, Torris Levia
- 18:18beefs outside. Next time, I look, stop you. I want to
- 18:22know what happened two years ago on that highway out here. You guys split
- 18:25up, didn't you? You better talk? Stop you all right? We
- 18:27split up? The heat was on Bladen. Gigi was half dead already from
- 18:30a cop slug in his back. Datrick had all though, right, What
- 18:33do you think I left him and gig off outside of town. I took
- 18:37the car, tried to shuck the cops away from him. We were supposed
- 18:41to meet later. I just kept going to save your own high, didn't
- 18:42you. Certainly I'm just gonna pay you off, shucker. You'll see since
- 18:47the money was never found. You figure Ditrich hit it around here and he's
- 18:48coming back to dig it up? Is that it? Keep guessing, shamish?
- 18:52Maybe we ought to loosen your jaw again. Stop him handsome and by
- 18:56Sadie, I'll plug you well, a real genuine forty four? What museum
- 19:03just wiped that from? Flora never mind? Got a legal right to defend
- 19:07the piece and choir tom I joint and after twenty two years and this dad,
- 19:08I don't know how to do it now. I ask your knights once.
- 19:11Now I'm telling you you get out that back door there, sure,
- 19:18thanks, Hey, wait a minute, flurna, let that look get away
- 19:19yet? Up? How you sat down right there and count up to fifty?
- 19:23Then you're leaving by the front quietly? Okay, you win one two
- 19:30Flora coud he's back. Sorry you bother bait. I'll leave this cannon on
- 19:36the back steps. How long Flora? I beat it out the back door
- 19:42and into an alleyway between the shacks. Stoppka was still in sight, but
- 19:45walking fast, and when I took after him, he saw me and started
- 19:48to run. It was a hud flat sound, like someone striking wet sand
- 19:51with a hammer. Stopka folded and lurched up on his toes, as if
- 19:56he suddenly changed his mind about running. The same insn't on a wall even
- 20:00with him, I saw the shadow of a man holding a pistol with a
- 20:03long, awkward barrel. The hard flat sound came again. Stopped, the
- 20:07curled up on himself and fell, and the shadow slid off the wall disappeared.
- 20:14I ran for the wounded man, but by the time I got to
- 20:15him, there was no trace of the gunman. A roll stopped go over.
- 20:18He was hit hard, slipping away fast. Silence always used the silence,
- 20:33dad, huh, you wise guys never know when to quit, do
- 20:37you? You're in real trouble now, Handsome, Hey, wait a minute,
- 20:40I didn't do this. Come. I couldn't hear the shot to silence
- 20:41him? Yeah, that's right, trade Mark of a guy named Gigi Ganther.
- 20:47All I saw of him was a shadow on that wall. Say what
- 20:49kind of law have you got in this town? Flora non scept the highway
- 20:52patrol I stopped in every night. Okay, call him, get him over
- 20:56here. This guy's Mardy Stoppa, wanted for a bank job, nearly two
- 21:00years old. Now kidding who you as trainer. I'm a private detective who's
- 21:04got no business here except I don't like to be pushed around. I listened.
- 21:08Do you know Leland Mills Place at the edge of town? Sure?
- 21:11When you get the cops out the Mills Place by ten thirty, do you
- 21:14understand that's where the big attraction is going to be? If I can keep
- 21:17Gigi in his silence of amdter fearing again, let me down, beautiful.
- 21:21Yeah, I won't let you down, Hanson City boy, You're all right.
- 21:30I stepped to a back road and drove with my lights out until I
- 21:33was a good safe distance beyond Leland Mills Ranch, and I hit the car
- 21:37in a dry gully and walked back. The house was dark and still,
- 21:41I thought once what might have happened? The Mills of Gigi had gotten there
- 21:45ahead of me. I kept in the shadows and worked my way across the
- 21:48yard at the back door. Who's there, i'llah open up. I was
- 22:02beginning to worry. It's pretty near ten o'clock. I know, I know,
- 22:04I've seen anybody so far. No, nope, not a soul.
- 22:07I've been watching close too. Did you find them men? That gg that
- 22:11stop cut? Yeah? Stop is dead and as killers. You to show
- 22:14up here anytime now. Oh, we're going to have our hands full.
- 22:17I wait a minute. Is that a car? Sure sounds like one.
- 22:21Yep. There you can just make it out. Turned it down by the
- 22:23covert and stopped. Yeah, I think a man got out. Yeah,
- 22:29yeah, there he goes across the field there behind your shed. It's Dietrich.
- 22:32I'm going out in my mills. You stay here. No, I'm
- 22:34going too. That That fellow's head and right for my watertank. All right,
- 22:37he's heading for your water tank. Don't get excited, you'll tip I
- 22:40met I get this mills. You've got to stay here and watch for Gigi.
- 22:44He's bound to show up, and when he does, you better have
- 22:45that rifle of yours handy, because he's a killer. Do you understand?
- 22:48Yep? Sure, I understand. Don't worry, Marlow, I'll keep my
- 22:52eyes open. Don't you worry about a thing. When I eased out of
- 23:03the door and started across the yard, I knew I was getting myself out
- 23:07on a nice long limb. Leyland Mills was about as reliable as William Tell
- 23:12with their hiccups, and the apple was on my head. It was too
- 23:15late to back up, so I skirted the bond, stayed below the crest
- 23:18of a low rise, moved toward the elevated water tank until I heard a
- 23:22shovel biting dirt. I got a comfortable grip on my gun, headed up
- 23:26over the rise to where I could see, and it was Dietrick all right.
- 23:30It was fent over under the tank and working on a hole as if
- 23:33his life depended on it. He didn't even look up until I was almost
- 23:37on top of him. Who's there? Who is it me? Mister Gordon
- 23:42Mallow? How did you get hit? It wasn't easy, sammy boy.
- 23:47I had to come and apologize for losing your precious bag full of waste paper.
- 23:51And you sure picked a dangerous time. The showsucker. You were fired
- 23:53once to bed. You can't take a hint uh huh, and being tagged
- 23:56as a Patsy's lousy for my business. Dietrich isd have thought of that.
- 24:00Just leave your hands on that shovel handle, Sam, and keep on digging.
- 24:03Maybe I'll let you take a peek at that one twenty grand before I
- 24:06turn you both over to the place. Go on digging out, not so
- 24:10fast, male, else, I told you to stay in it. Hey,
- 24:14that's quite a pistol. Don't move, neither one of you. I'll
- 24:18kill you if you move, you mallow, drop your gun, drop it.
- 24:23So this is where it's been all the time, one hundred and twenty
- 24:27thousand dollars. I looked everywhere, every day for two whole years. But
- 24:32I never thought of looking here under the water tank. When you knew where
- 24:37the money was all the time, you'll lie, you'll lie. I'm the
- 24:38only one that knew that. No. One night, two years ago,
- 24:42I heard a noise in my bond. It was a man groaning. I
- 24:45looked in and I saw him. He was wounded. And I saw you
- 24:48when you come back from burying the money. I overheard the whole thing.
- 24:52You wouldn't tell him where you'd hidden it. You said you'd never tell anybody,
- 24:56but I was sure I could find it. I looked everywhere, sat
- 25:00yeah, Mills, everywhere except here under the water tank, where you buried
- 25:04Gigi's body after you killed him, and with his own gun at that.
- 25:07Oh no, I didn't kill him Dietrich here. I only buried him so
- 25:11nobody would find out that him and Dietrich had stopped at my place. I
- 25:15almost went crazy looking for that money, But nah, I know where it
- 25:18is, and I'm going to have it. You fool. You don't think
- 25:22i'd come out here with nothing but a shovel, do you. A friend
- 25:25of mine is right behind you with a gun in the hand. To come
- 25:26on, drop yours room, Come on, come on, drop it all
- 25:33right? Okay, that's an old trick, die trick. Let him have
- 25:38it? Shoot? K shoot? Didn't work, did it? And knew
- 25:44I'd have to kill you sometime anyway if you ever came back. So you
- 25:49wull Mills. I suppose that makes me next. Yep, mister Marlow,
- 25:55I think it does. Think again, mister Mills, who's that? Kay?
- 25:59You were there all time, and Ditric wasn't. I love youkay,
- 26:02baby, And I'll take the gun own, Mills, turn it loose.
- 26:04Come on, break your arm. That's better. I'll look after this gun
- 26:10until the police get here, and look after this one. Toomlow, I
- 26:14haven't got the courage to use it anyway. I couldn't even shoot Sam Dietrick
- 26:18with it. He's the one I wanted to use it on. Why because
- 26:21of Yeah, because he killed Gigi and live to me, I promised to
- 26:26help Dietrich on because I figured all three of them would show up here,
- 26:27Sam, Stopka and Gigi. That way, I hope to find him again.
- 26:33You were right, baby, all three of them did show up,
- 26:37only this time they finished that job good. It was ten thirty on the
- 26:51nose when we got back to the house and the highway patrolla just pulled up,
- 26:56So the question in answer period started, and by the time it was
- 26:57over all the field work finished up, four hours plus had gone by.
- 27:03It took some fast conversation and a lot of promises to stay handy, but
- 27:07finally Kay was left with me. After all, her only real mistake had
- 27:12been falling in love with the wrong kind of a guy. When the last
- 27:17patrol car drove away, the desert was suddenly very still. The stars were
- 27:22small and sharp and the clear sky. Yeah, it was cold. Maybe
- 27:29that was why k got and trembled. I'm sorry about all this. I
- 27:36got you into it, Remember he also got me out of it. K.
- 27:40Well, I can forget about Gigi now that I know for sure what
- 27:44happened, and all because of a jerk named Leland Mills. Mills was a
- 27:51desperate guy, k after he buried Gigi just about when nuts trying to find
- 27:56the money. When he finally realized Dietrich was the only one would lead him
- 27:59too, he shot Stopkin would have killed anybody else, keeping fermiterfering with Dietrich
- 28:03until he uncovered the hiding plate you know in away, Mallow. It was
- 28:07a horrible trick of fate. They both picked the same place to bury things.
- 28:11Not really, Nels and Dietrich had the same jobs to do under the
- 28:15same conditions. They each had to bury something in a hurry and in the
- 28:19dark, so both of them picked the spot where the ground was soft and
- 28:23one that was clearly marked at the same time under the water tank. Yeah
- 28:29and it Mallow, I'm kind of scared. I don't like this place,
- 28:34this spooky little town. It's the end of nowhere. Yeah, I wouldn't
- 28:41be caught dead here myself. Let's go, baby. I walked herto a
- 28:48car, started us safely on our way. So long, sucker. She
- 28:55waved once and drove down the road and out of sight without looking back.
- 29:00Soon even the sound of the motor was gone. A long night and a
- 29:07strange reunion, and now two lonely lights were the only sign of life in
- 29:11lonesome Arizona. I stood on the empty highway for a few minutes and listened
- 29:18to the immense quiet of the desert. And I went back to my rented
- 29:23car and headed for Phoenix and a plane. The Adventures of Philip Marlowe,
- 29:45created by Raymond Chandler, stars Gerald Moore and is produced and directed by Norman
- 29:51McDonald. Script is by Meldon l. A, Robert Mitchell, and gene
- 29:53Leavitt. Featured in the cast were Joan Banks, Edgar Barrier, Virginia Gregg,
- 29:57Jeff Chandler, Bill Bouche, and Jack Khrusian. The special music is
- 30:02by Richard o'rant. May sure and be with us again next week. When
- 30:10Philimolo says it was a weird racket that mushroomed in a world of gaudy canvas
- 30:15and the man with purple hair, the inquisitive midget, and the Lady with
- 30:19Strong Hands each played a part, but all that was only a sideshow when
- 30:25death got into the act. Across the nation, communities and the parents of
- 30:41boy Scots are observing Boy Scout Week, agreeing with the boys themselves that adventure
- 30:47that's scouting. Now. Stay tuned for Gangbusters, which follows immediately over most
- 30:52of these same CBS network stations. This is roy Ron's for CBS the Columbia
- 31:00Broadcasting System. Welcome back. What of This is one of my favorite episodes
- 31:18of the Adventures of Philip Marlowe. The exact identity of Leland Mills was a
- 31:23good twist, and there was just a lot of mystery and atmosphere, and
- 31:29really this was just engaging. I haven't listened to all of the episodes of
- 31:33this series, but this has got to be close to my favorite of those
- 31:37that I've heard. I love the whole pond that they come up with with
- 31:42the law with the Lonesome Reunion. Now, there is not actually a city
- 31:48named Lonesome in Arizona. There is a Lonesome Valley, which is more from
- 31:55what I can gather about Arizona. More of a wilderness area outside of Prescott.
- 32:01Also, we got to hear Jeff Chandler of the New Adventures of Michael
- 32:07Sheene fame as one of the thugs in this story. So overall, just
- 32:13a pretty solid episode. I really enjoy it, and this is one of
- 32:16the reasons why The Adventures of Philip Marlow is simply one of my favorite detective
- 32:22shows ever. So I'm just so glad to be bringing that to you.
