- 0:13MV Radio dot US welcome. To love letters.
- 1:02through Welcome to love letters from God.
- 1:07Today we're going to start looking at the life of Solomon.
- 1:13We have in the past read through the Psalms and some of the life
- 1:19of David, and we've also looked at Proverbs.
- 1:24But what we're going to do now is look at the guy that wrote
- 1:28those proverbs, or anyway wrote most of them.
- 1:33And we're going to also look at the book of Ecclesiastes, which
- 1:38Solomon wrote toward the end of his life.
- 1:43So if you would, we want to turn to the Book of First Kings to
- 1:51begin with today, chapter three. In First Kings.
- 1:56Now Solomon made a treaty with Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and he
- 2:04married Pharaoh's daughter. Then he brought her to the city
- 2:09of David until he had finished building his own house and the
- 2:15House of the Lord and the wall all around Jerusalem.
- 2:20Meanwhile, the people sacrificed at the high places because there
- 2:26was no house built for the name of the Lord until those days.
- 2:32And Solomon loved the Lord walking in the statutes of his
- 2:37father David, except that he sacrificed and he burned incense
- 2:44at these high places. Now the king went to Gibeon to
- 2:49sacrifice there, for that was the great high place.
- 2:54Solomon offered 1000 burnt offerings on that altar.
- 3:00And Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night.
- 3:07And God said, Ask what I shall give you.
- 3:14And Solomon said, You have shown great mercy to your servant
- 3:20David, my father, because he walked before you in truth, in
- 3:25righteousness, and in uprighteousness of heart with
- 3:29you. You have continued this great
- 3:33kindness for him, and you have given him a son to sit on his
- 3:38throne as it is this day. Now, O Lord, my God, you have
- 3:45made your servant King instead of my father David.
- 3:50But I'm a little child. I do not know how to go out or
- 3:57how to come in, And your servant is in the midst of your people,
- 4:02whom you have chosen are great people, too numerous to be
- 4:07numbered or counted. Therefore give to Your servant
- 4:14an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may be
- 4:20discerned between good and evil. For who is able to judge this
- 4:27great people of yours? That speech pleased the Lord,
- 4:33that Solomon had asked this thing.
- 4:36And then God said to him, Because you have asked this
- 4:39thing and have not asked long life for yourself, nor have
- 4:49asked for riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your
- 4:54enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to
- 5:00discern justice. Behold, I've done according to
- 5:04your words. See, I have given you a wise and
- 5:10an understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like
- 5:14you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you.
- 5:20And I have also given you what you have not asked, both riches
- 5:26and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the
- 5:31kings all of your days. So if you walk in my ways to
- 5:38keep my statutes and my commandments as your father
- 5:43David walked, then I will lengthen your days.
- 5:48Then Solomon awoke, and indeed it had been a dream, and he came
- 5:54to Jerusalem. He stood for the ark of the
- 5:56Covenant of the Lord. He offered up burnt offerings.
- 6:02He offered peace offerings. He made a feast for all of his
- 6:08servants. Now two women who were harlots
- 6:14came to the king, and they stood before him.
- 6:19And one woman said, Oh my Lord, this woman and I dwell in the
- 6:25same house, and I gave birth while she was in the house.
- 6:32Then it happened the third day after I had given birth, that
- 6:36this woman also gave birth and we were together.
- 6:41No one was with us in the house except the two of us in the
- 6:46house. And this woman's son died in the
- 6:50night because she lay on him. So she arose in the middle of
- 6:57the night and took my son from my side, while your maid servant
- 7:04slept, laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my
- 7:10bosom. And when I arose in the morning
- 7:15to nurse my son, there he was dead.
- 7:21But when I had examined him in the morning, indeed he was not
- 7:26my son whom I had borne. Then the other woman said no,
- 7:33but the living 1 is my son, and the dead 1 is your son.
- 7:38And the first woman said no, but the dead 1 is your son, and the
- 7:43living 1 is my son. Thus they spoke before the king.
- 7:49And the king said, the one says this is my son who lives, and
- 7:55your son is the dead 1. And the other says, no, but your
- 8:00son is the dead 1, and my son is a living one.
- 8:04And then the king said, bring me a sword.
- 8:09So they brought a sword before the king.
- 8:12And the king said, divide the living child in two, give half
- 8:17to 1 and half to the other. And then the woman whose son was
- 8:22living spoke to the king, for she yearned with compassion for
- 8:28her son. And she said, Oh my Lord, give
- 8:31her the living child, and by no means kill him.
- 8:36The other one said, Let it be neither mine nor yours, but go
- 8:40ahead and divide him. So the king answered and said,
- 8:45Give the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him.
- 8:52She is his mother. And all Israel heard of the
- 8:57judgement which the king had rendered, and they feared the
- 9:00king, for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him to
- 9:06administer justice. So here we have Solomon.
- 9:10Now Solomon is the king. He has been granted wisdom, and
- 9:17he was given that wisdom so that he could make good decisions.
- 9:23He did make a good decision with respect to that little baby, but
- 9:28throughout his life he had other decisions to make and they
- 9:34weren't always right. He made a lot of bad decisions
- 9:40using the wisdom that God had given him, and he writes in the
- 9:45book of Ecclesiastes what those decisions did.
- 9:52So turn over to the book of Ecclesiastes and now and we're
- 10:00going to read chapter 1, the words of the preacher, the son
- 10:07of David, king in Jerusalem. This is Solomon again.
- 10:14Vanity of vanities, says the preacher.
- 10:20Vanity of vanities. All is vanity.
- 10:27What profit has a man from all of his labor in which he toils
- 10:35under the sun? One generation passes away and
- 10:41another generation comes, but the earth abides forever.
- 10:47The sun also rises, and the sun goes down and hasten to the
- 10:52place where it arose. The wind goes toward the South,
- 10:59and it turns around to the north, and the wind whirls about
- 11:04continually and comes again on its circuit.
- 11:10All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full to the
- 11:16place from which the rivers come, and there they return
- 11:20again. All things are full of labour.
- 11:25Man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with
- 11:30seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
- 11:36That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what
- 11:43will be done. And there's nothing new under
- 11:48the sun. Is there anything of which it
- 11:51may be said, See, this is new, It's already been in ancient
- 11:56times before us. There is no remembrance of
- 12:01former things, nor will there be any remembrance of things that
- 12:06are to come but those who will come after.
- 12:12The preacher was king over all Israel in Jerusalem.
- 12:18And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning
- 12:24all that is done under the heavens, this burdensome task
- 12:31God has given to the sons of man by which they may be exercised.
- 12:39I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and
- 12:45indeed all is vanity and grasping for the wind.
- 12:51What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking
- 12:58cannot be numbered. I communed with my heart,
- 13:03saying, Look, I have attained greatness and I've gained more
- 13:10wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem.
- 13:15My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge, and I set
- 13:21my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly.
- 13:27I perceive that this also is grasping for the wind, for in
- 13:34much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases knowledge
- 13:42increases sorrow. So that's chapter one of the
- 13:49book of Ecclesiastes. We're going to continue reading
- 13:52Ecclesiastes in the weeks to come.
- 13:57But what we want to note in all of this is that God gave one man
- 14:02here by the name of Solomon Wisdom.
- 14:06He became the greatest man in the whole world, but he didn't
- 14:10use it right. And if you don't use what God
- 14:15gives you in the right way, you thank him for it.
- 14:19And you, you, you don't thank him for it, and you abuse that
- 14:23wisdom, nothing's gonna work. Your life becomes a mess.
- 14:31It's just full of emptiness. So let's use the wisdom, use the
- 14:39abilities God gives us in the right way and in His love letter
- 14:45that He has given to us here He will be emphasizing That's
- 14:51really where the answer is. Read your Bible, folks, and in
- 14:56reading your Bibles, apply its teaching to your lives and let
- 15:01that be a daily occurrence for you as you allow that wisdom to
- 15:08be a part of your life. Shall we pray?
- 15:12Our Father in Heaven, we are thankful that you were there.
- 15:19We are thankful for all of the blessings that you give us.
- 15:24We're thankful for the minds you give us and the ability to
- 15:27choose. We ask for your help in choosing
- 15:32what is right. We pray that as we continue
- 15:36looking into that love letter you've given us, that that
- 15:41wisdom will become a part of our lives, so we will make good
- 15:46decisions and in the process become the kind of people you
- 15:51want. We pray this in the name of your
- 15:54Son, Jesus Christ, who came here and died and made everything
- 16:01available. We pray it in his name, Amen.
