- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. Take thee again another roll, and write
- 0:06Speaker 1: it in all the former words that were in the
- 0:08Speaker 1: first roll, which Jehoakim the king of Judah hath burned.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Jeremiah 36.28 Give me the boldness to speak and proclaim
- 0:19Speaker 1: your truth, even when I face persecution from those who
- 0:24Speaker 1: feel they know better. In the same way that Jeremiah
- 0:28Speaker 1: had the confidence to stand, in the face of opposition.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I thank you that I too possess that same confidence
- 0:36Speaker 1: to stand for what is right and godly, even though
- 0:41Speaker 1: I may be the only one holding fast to your
- 0:43Speaker 1: words of truth. When society seeks to silence my words
- 0:49Speaker 1: and actions, when those in power look to burn and
- 0:53Speaker 1: destroy your truths, I thank you that your word and
- 0:58Speaker 1: your decrees are eternal and indestructible. Whereas others fold under
- 1:06Speaker 1: the pressure of the mantle of purpose, I will endure,
- 1:11Speaker 1: because you've anointed me to share your goodness and to
- 1:14Speaker 1: reach the lost in whatever environment I'm in. I declare
- 1:20Speaker 1: that revival is on us and change flows through us.
- 1:28Speaker 1: In Jesus' name.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Amen.

- 2:29Speaker 2: Burning the Scroll In our last story, we learned about
- 2:34Speaker 2: the calling of Jeremiah. He was chosen as a prophet
- 2:37Speaker 2: to bring the people of Judah back to God. Jeremiah
- 2:41Speaker 2: proclaimed the word of God in the city streets and
- 2:44Speaker 2: in front of the temple. Much of his words fell
- 2:47Speaker 2: on deaf ears. Other words fell on angry ears. And
- 2:51Speaker 2: Jeremiah was forced to feel the blunt force of people's
- 2:54Speaker 2: clubs and fists. Now we learn about the word of
- 2:57Speaker 2: Jeremiah being recorded into a scroll, and the word of
- 3:01Speaker 2: God spreading for more people to hear. However, whenever truth
- 3:05Speaker 2: is proclaimed, there are those in power who desire to
- 3:08Speaker 2: repress it. Inspired by the book of Jeremiah and 2 Kings.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Hello, this is the Bible in a Year podcast, and
- 3:18Speaker 4: I'm Jack Graham. In our last episode, we heard of
- 3:22Speaker 4: Jeremiah's call to be God's voice to the people of Judah.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Speaking God's truth can be lonely and often dangerous. But
- 3:31Speaker 4: Jeremiah was a man of courage. And even when he
- 3:34Speaker 4: was weary and tired, he still maintained the ministry and
- 3:38Speaker 4: the mission that God had given him. Today, we'll hear
- 3:41Speaker 4: more of Jeremiah's life and ministry as he proclaimed the
- 3:44Speaker 4: Word of God. His words will be recorded onto a
- 3:48Speaker 4: scroll preserved for future generations. But as we've already seen,
- 3:52Speaker 4: Jeremiah would face anger and hatred, And there would be
- 3:56Speaker 4: those trying to silence his voice and the voice of God.
- 4:00Speaker 4: So let's listen to the reading of God's word now.
- 4:04Speaker 2: The righteous King Josiah had passed to be with his
- 4:07Speaker 2: father David. With him, the hope for a repentant Judah
- 4:11Speaker 2: grew dim. Jeremiah wasted no time. Josiah's death would set
- 4:16Speaker 2: the north in motion, and it was only a matter
- 4:19Speaker 2: of time before Babylon descended upon God's peoples. Jeremiah proclaimed
- 4:24Speaker 2: God's call to repentance with urgency. He stood in the
- 4:28Speaker 2: court of the Lord's house and spoke to all the cities.
- 4:31Speaker 2: He waved his hands and raised his voice, shouting for
- 4:34Speaker 2: all to turn from their ways and come back to
- 4:37Speaker 2: God before it was too late. God wanted to give
- 4:41Speaker 2: Judah every possible chance to turn away from evil. Josiah
- 4:45Speaker 2: did his best to remove all the idols from the nation,
- 4:49Speaker 2: but he could not change their hearts. Only they could
- 4:52Speaker 2: personally choose to worship and love the Lord. Despite Jeremiah's
- 4:57Speaker 2: best efforts, the Lord's warnings were not received with gladness.
- 5:01Speaker 2: In fact, Jeremiah was often met with incredible disdain, especially
- 5:06Speaker 2: from the priests. One day, Jeremiah was finishing his sermon
- 5:10Speaker 2: in front of a large crowd calling for repentance. In
- 5:13Speaker 2: the middle of his proclamation, Jeremiah saw a flurry of
- 5:17Speaker 2: temple guards come after him. Jeremiah tried to turn away,
- 5:20Speaker 2: but one of them grabbed him by the ankles.' You
- 5:23Speaker 2: shall die!' the priests yelled.' You speak as God, saying
- 5:28Speaker 2: that we will be destroyed. Who has given you the right?'
- 5:31Speaker 2: The priests were so busy focusing on their damaged egos
- 5:35Speaker 2: that they could not hear what Jeremiah was trying to
- 5:37Speaker 2: tell them. They detained him, and a large crowd gathered
- 5:41Speaker 2: in the courtyard of the temple to watch. When the
- 5:43Speaker 2: king's judges and officials heard about the commotion near the
- 5:46Speaker 2: temple and came down to settle the matter, this man
- 5:50Speaker 2: deserves to die, the priests spat. You have heard it yourself,
- 5:55Speaker 2: he proclaims destruction against Judah. The officials looked at Jeremiah
- 6:00Speaker 2: and gestured for him to defend himself. The temple guards
- 6:03Speaker 2: let go of him and Jeremiah spoke again, saying, I
- 6:07Speaker 2: say nothing that has not been asked of me by
- 6:09Speaker 2: God himself. Mend your relationship with him and he will relent.
- 6:14Speaker 2: He is kind and willing to spare us if we
- 6:16Speaker 2: simply turn back to him. Jeremiah paused, looking at their
- 6:20Speaker 2: blank stares. He held up his hands and gestured for chains.
- 6:24Speaker 2: But if you truly see me as a threat, go
- 6:27Speaker 2: ahead and detain me. Do what seems good to you,
- 6:30Speaker 2: but know that you would be shedding the blood of
- 6:32Speaker 2: an innocent man. The officials mumbled amongst themselves. Jeremiah looked
- 6:38Speaker 2: at them and then back to the priests. It was tense,
- 6:41Speaker 2: and Jeremiah did not know what would happen next. It
- 6:44Speaker 2: is clear, one of the officials began, that this man
- 6:48Speaker 2: does not deserve to die. He clearly speaks for the Lord,
- 6:52Speaker 2: as did our King Josiah before him. Jeremiah released a
- 6:56Speaker 2: sigh of relief. He was more pleased that the people
- 6:59Speaker 2: were finally beginning to understand him. Time had passed, and
- 7:04Speaker 2: Jeremiah could see a small revival blossoming. However, Jeremiah could
- 7:08Speaker 2: not shake the feeling that what the Lord was telling
- 7:10Speaker 2: him was for the future generations as well as the current.
- 7:15Speaker 2: So the Lord prompted his heart and told him to
- 7:17Speaker 2: write down all that he had told him. God's words
- 7:20Speaker 2: to Jeremiah would serve as a compass and comfort to
- 7:24Speaker 2: the captive people of Judah in the years to come.
- 7:27Speaker 2: So Jeremiah summoned Baruch, a trusted friend and scribe. Together
- 7:32Speaker 2: they wrote down all the Lord had shown Jeremiah. All
- 7:35Speaker 2: the warnings and calls for repentance were documented for future
- 7:38Speaker 2: generations to read. I am banned from entering the temple
- 7:42Speaker 2: because of the angered priests, Jeremiah said. You must go
- 7:47Speaker 2: and take this scroll to the people, read it to them,
- 7:50Speaker 2: and pray they turn to God. So Baruch took the
- 7:54Speaker 2: scroll into the temple. Before God and man, he declared
- 7:57Speaker 2: the warnings of Jeremiah. Revival began to blossom even more
- 8:02Speaker 2: as the people listened. A fast was declared for the people,
- 8:06Speaker 2: and the priests began to soften towards the warnings of God.
- 8:10Speaker 2: The word of God began to heal the broken hearts
- 8:13Speaker 2: of Judah. People were beginning to run back to God.
- 8:16Speaker 2: They were hearing the voice of their shepherd as they
- 8:18Speaker 2: once did in the wilderness. However, King Jehoiakim was not
- 8:22Speaker 2: like King Josiah. He was a prideful man. He was
- 8:26Speaker 2: calm and filled with quiet rage. Word came to him
- 8:30Speaker 2: that Baruch was reading the word of God and people
- 8:32Speaker 2: were filling the temple with repentant hearts. His servants went
- 8:36Speaker 2: to retrieve the scroll written by Baruch and Jeremiah. The
- 8:40Speaker 2: servant brought the scroll back to the king. He was
- 8:43Speaker 2: brooding over the fire, watching the coals pop in the fireplace.
- 8:47Speaker 2: Read it to me, the king said impassively. So the
- 8:51Speaker 2: servant began to read Jeremiah's words. They spoke of coming destruction.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Past sins and opportunities for love. The words vexed Jehoiakim.
- 9:01Speaker 2: He gestured for the servant to hand him the scroll.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Each page after it was read was tossed into the fire.
- 9:08Speaker 2: One by one, the word of God was burnt. Little
- 9:12Speaker 2: did Jehoiakim know the word of God is eternal and unwavering.
- 9:16Speaker 2: There is no stopping truth. Disaster would befall Jehoiakim. Disaster
- 9:22Speaker 2: unlike anything he could imagine. Jeremiah and Baruch created another
- 9:26Speaker 2: copy of the scroll. It was passed around to the
- 9:29Speaker 2: people and read in the temple. However, the anger of
- 9:32Speaker 2: the king was felt, and people were more reluctant to
- 9:35Speaker 2: receive God's warnings. The blossoming evil retreated for a moment
- 9:39Speaker 2: back into its bud. For now, the people remained distant
- 9:44Speaker 2: from their first love.
- 9:49Speaker 4: As we open God's Word today, Israel's righteous king, Josiah,
- 9:53Speaker 4: has died. God had promised him that the demise of Judah,
- 9:58Speaker 4: their punishment for years of disobedience, would not come about
- 10:01Speaker 4: in his lifetime. But now with the king gone, the
- 10:04Speaker 4: prophet Jeremiah knew that judgment was sure and that time
- 10:08Speaker 4: was short. There was such an urgency to the calling
- 10:12Speaker 4: of this man. God's hand of judgment would not be
- 10:15Speaker 4: stayed forever, and Babylon was growing stronger from the north.
- 10:19Speaker 4: And though punishment would come, God desired to see those
- 10:23Speaker 4: in Judah turn from their ways to worship him once again.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Jeremiah understood the importance of his task, but those to
- 10:32Speaker 4: whom he proclaimed God's word were unmoved. Worse yet, they
- 10:36Speaker 4: were bothered by the mere mention of judgment or calamity
- 10:39Speaker 4: that would come upon Judah. Some of Jeremiah's staunchest opponents
- 10:44Speaker 4: were the priests, men who were to guide God's people
- 10:47Speaker 4: and instruct them in his ways. were content to let
- 10:49Speaker 4: the people do as they wished, telling them only what
- 10:52Speaker 4: they wanted to hear. When those who are supposedly ministers
- 10:57Speaker 4: of God refuse to speak truth, disobedience, disorder, and disaster
- 11:02Speaker 4: are not far behind. This is also true in our
- 11:05Speaker 4: own generation. When ministers of the gospel or ministers of
- 11:10Speaker 4: the church do not speak God's truth, disaster is sure
- 11:15Speaker 4: to follow. The priests were so threatened, their egos so
- 11:18Speaker 4: damaged by Jeremiah, that they wanted him killed and brought
- 11:22Speaker 4: him before the officials, calling for his death. Jeremiah's experience
- 11:27Speaker 4: foreshadowed what God's own son, Jesus, would one day experience.
- 11:32Speaker 4: When he, the way, the truth, and the life came,
- 11:35Speaker 4: they put him on a cross and took his life.
- 11:38Speaker 4: The religious establishment always resists the true work of God.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Facing a Martyr's Fate Jeremiah spoke to defend himself. He
- 11:49Speaker 4: hoped some of the people would hear the truth and
- 11:51Speaker 4: turn to God. So in Jeremiah 26, verses 12 through 14,
- 11:56Speaker 4: here is what we read. Then Jeremiah spoke to all
- 12:00Speaker 4: the officials and all the people, saying, The Lord sent
- 12:03Speaker 4: me to prophesy against this house and this city all
- 12:05Speaker 4: the words you have heard. Now therefore mend your ways
- 12:09Speaker 4: and your deeds and obey the voice of the Lord
- 12:12Speaker 4: your God. and the Lord will relent of the disaster
- 12:15Speaker 4: that he has pronounced against you. But as for me, behold,
- 12:19Speaker 4: I am in your hands. Do with me as seems
- 12:22Speaker 4: good and right to you. Here was a bold, brave,
- 12:26Speaker 4: courageous man, committed and convicted always to obey God, even
- 12:31Speaker 4: if it meant death. With these courageous words, the officials
- 12:36Speaker 4: were convinced that Jeremiah did not actually deserve to die,
- 12:40Speaker 4: that he truly was speaking for God. And slowly hearts
- 12:44Speaker 4: began to warm to the words that Jeremiah the prophet spoke.
- 12:48Speaker 4: These were just small steps and just the beginning, but
- 12:51Speaker 4: there were seeds of renewal and revival. Jeremiah knew that
- 12:56Speaker 4: there were many who needed to hear his words. So
- 12:59Speaker 4: he and his scribe Baruch committed to writing the words
- 13:02Speaker 4: God gave him to speak. These words, the very words
- 13:07Speaker 4: of God, were not just for his generation, but for
- 13:10Speaker 4: those to come. The scroll with God's warnings was taken
- 13:14Speaker 4: into the temple by Baruch because Jeremiah was not welcomed there.
- 13:20Speaker 4: As more people heard the warnings, more hearts began to change.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Even the priests, the religious establishment who had opposed Jeremiah,
- 13:29Speaker 4: began to listen. There was hope for the future. But
- 13:34Speaker 4: Judah's king, Jehoiakim, was filled with pride. He didn't want
- 13:38Speaker 4: to hear condemnation or of a looming disaster or judgment.
- 13:42Speaker 4: He had the scroll brought to him and as it
- 13:45Speaker 4: was read, he had his servant burn it in hopes
- 13:48Speaker 4: that God's word would be snuffed out. How absolutely foolish
- 13:53Speaker 4: of this king to think that he could restrain or
- 13:56Speaker 4: stop the word of God. God will always find a
- 13:59Speaker 4: way for his word to penetrate every heart. And sometimes
- 14:04Speaker 4: all he needs are a few faithful people. Jeremiah and
- 14:08Speaker 4: Baruch recorded another scroll. and it went out to more
- 14:11Speaker 4: people as it was read in the temple. Still, the
- 14:14Speaker 4: king's heart was hard, and the people feared this king,
- 14:18Speaker 4: so Judah continued on a path of destruction. We'll hear
- 14:22Speaker 4: about that in our next episode. Dear Lord, may we
- 14:26Speaker 4: always be faithful, like Jeremiah and Baruch, to deliver your word,
- 14:32Speaker 4: that we would always believe your word, live your word,
- 14:36Speaker 4: and speak your word, because your word is true. May
- 14:40Speaker 4: we be willing to be courageous and confident that your
- 14:44Speaker 4: word will change lives. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
