- 0:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta work. You gotta work by sign it's
- 0:13Speaker 1: mine gotta show everybody is my sign.
- 0:15Speaker 2: You gotta work right shin another mind whom talking dogs
- 0:20Speaker 2: day line don't tell you gotta wurk.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
- 0:26Speaker 3: prompably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 3: real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
- 0:39Speaker 4: And uh, we have a repeat guest in the building
- 0:44Speaker 4: today for a I'll say a special reason and Hollis
- 0:50Speaker 4: is gonna give us a little bit of an introduction
- 0:52Speaker 4: and we'll go from there. Well, we got Malcolm Brown
- 0:55Speaker 4: at this point. Former South Charleston Black Eagles bath football player,
- 1:01Speaker 4: recently played in the North South Game this past weekend.
- 1:04Speaker 4: Not only did he play in one game, he played
- 1:06Speaker 4: in both games. So he played in the football game,
- 1:08Speaker 4: played in the basketball game. And again we believe pretty
- 1:11Speaker 4: historic from what we know. I don't know if too
- 1:14Speaker 4: many people throughout the history of the All Star Game
- 1:16Speaker 4: here in West Virginia's actually played in both games. It
- 1:19Speaker 4: might have been named to both, but I don't know
- 1:21Speaker 4: too many people that played them both. What's going on, Malcolm,
- 1:24Speaker 4: How you doing?
- 1:25Speaker 5: What's up?
- 1:25Speaker 6: How y'all doing?
- 1:26Speaker 4: We're good man, And let me let me say this
- 1:30Speaker 4: to start out. One of the and I've known you
- 1:33Speaker 4: for for a while, and one of the one of
- 1:37Speaker 4: the even more special things about you, even going past
- 1:42Speaker 4: your your skill sets in football and basketball, just a
- 1:47Speaker 4: good just a good person, you know, just a just
- 1:50Speaker 4: a good guy. And I can't even if you didn't
- 1:55Speaker 4: tell me what he how good he was or what
- 1:59Speaker 4: he was good, I don't even think I would even know,
- 2:02Speaker 4: because I don't even think, I mean, even his mannerisms
- 2:06Speaker 4: do not even reflect as an athlete typically would his
- 2:13Speaker 4: skill set. And and for that, man, I think that's
- 2:16Speaker 4: something really really special about you that I think will
- 2:22Speaker 4: will even be even more helpful for you going forward
- 2:28Speaker 4: than any any drills that you can do. I just
- 2:33Speaker 4: I just wanted to give you that information from me
- 2:36Speaker 4: to you.
- 2:37Speaker 6: All right now, I'm going to jump into.
- 2:43Speaker 4: How when I think about football and basketball, I was
- 2:45Speaker 4: horrible in basketball. Even though I was I could make
- 2:48Speaker 4: a case that I was a starter, okay, but I
- 2:51Speaker 4: wasn't a shooter.
- 2:52Speaker 6: I could.
- 2:52Speaker 4: I was just a rebounder and the guy covering people.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Football was a different story. I felt like that was
- 3:00Speaker 4: that was my game. You've you've excelled in both of
- 3:05Speaker 4: those games. What does that feel like or is that
- 3:08Speaker 4: just a norm for you? You just feel like normal,
- 3:11Speaker 4: You're just going out playing.
- 3:13Speaker 7: I mean, honestly, it feels like normal. I've been doing
- 3:15Speaker 7: this since six years old, since I started at Dumb
- 3:17Speaker 7: Bar with Coach Cuddy and them, since first time I
- 3:20Speaker 7: touched the football, I think I ran it for a touchdown.
- 3:23Speaker 5: And honestly, to.
- 3:24Speaker 7: Me, football football is not as hard to play like basketball.
- 3:28Speaker 7: If you're not scared to get hit, not scared of contact,
- 3:31Speaker 7: and you're willing to do whatever whatever the coach say,
- 3:33Speaker 7: you can go out there and be good at football.
- 3:35Speaker 7: No basketball, on the other hand, that's more skill wise.
- 3:37Speaker 7: You gotta work on your game. And I feel like
- 3:39Speaker 7: I got to touch with the basketball, so it's just everything.
- 3:42Speaker 5: It's kind of normal to me.
- 3:44Speaker 6: I hear you, how did it feel like?
- 3:46Speaker 4: I said, we don't know, And again, we've been around
- 3:49Speaker 4: for a while and I can't name you too many people.
- 3:51Speaker 4: I can't name you anybody that may personally know again,
- 3:54Speaker 4: I think I can probably think of some guys who've
- 3:57Speaker 4: been named to both teams, but I don't know if
- 3:59Speaker 4: any body that actually played in both games. So how
- 4:03Speaker 4: has this passed week been as far as that is concerned.
- 4:06Speaker 6: Oh?
- 4:07Speaker 5: Man, it was. It was an honor.
- 4:08Speaker 7: It was a great opportunity. Thankful, you know. I got
- 4:10Speaker 7: to thank God. We had FCA come and they was
- 4:14Speaker 7: talking about God and how athletes need to start putting
- 4:17Speaker 7: God first, and I feel like I need to start
- 4:20Speaker 7: doing that. So with that, I want to thank God
- 4:22Speaker 7: for that because He's the reason that I'm able to
- 4:24Speaker 7: do all this.
- 4:25Speaker 6: Sweet I hear you.
- 4:26Speaker 8: So, Malcolm, Hey, thanks so much for being on the
- 4:29Speaker 8: podcast with us tonight. We're honored to have you after
- 4:32Speaker 8: the feat you accomplished over the weekend, So thanks for
- 4:36Speaker 8: spending your time with us. So the guys just just
- 4:39Speaker 8: kind of touched on this that you played in both
- 4:41Speaker 8: the North South Basketball and Football Classic. How tough was
- 4:45Speaker 8: the physical toll of scoring, you know, twelve points on
- 4:49Speaker 8: the basketball court Friday night and then you're lining up
- 4:52Speaker 8: at defensive and running back the very next day. Was
- 4:55Speaker 8: that a big physical adjustment for you?
- 4:58Speaker 5: It wasn't really a big physical adjustment. I would say,
- 5:00Speaker 5: I'm kind of used.
- 5:01Speaker 7: To it because of like AAU, we would play a
- 5:03Speaker 7: couple of games on Friday. Next next day we're playing
- 5:06Speaker 7: another couple of games. So I'm kind of used to
- 5:08Speaker 7: that back to back stuff.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Okay, so you you also played AAU. Did you play
- 5:15Speaker 4: that for the for the I'll say the extra opportunity
- 5:21Speaker 4: to have to go get greater talent, that that's that's
- 5:25Speaker 4: usually what the reasoning for that is that really what
- 5:28Speaker 4: you were trying to chase or just playing more.
- 5:33Speaker 7: When I first started AU in Virginia, I was like,
- 5:37Speaker 7: I think sixth seventh grade. I think at that time,
- 5:40Speaker 7: I was just starting to play more and I just
- 5:42Speaker 7: loved basketball. But then once I got older into high school,
- 5:45Speaker 7: I was looking as more of like opportunities to get
- 5:47Speaker 7: looked at trying to get to college.
- 5:50Speaker 6: What are you doing?
- 5:52Speaker 4: What are you working out now? And if so, what
- 5:56Speaker 4: is kind of your regimen if you if you have
- 5:59Speaker 4: one already set out for yourself now?
- 6:01Speaker 7: Uh, yeah, I do work out now. I haven't really
- 6:03Speaker 7: had a regiment ever since I got out of school.
- 6:05Speaker 7: I've kind of been busy, like the North South week
- 6:08Speaker 7: week for football, and then I went to Senior Week.
- 6:11Speaker 7: But I mean, honestly, I just try to stay in
- 6:13Speaker 7: the gym get shot up. I haven't really I don't
- 6:14Speaker 7: work out too much, but I do. I do push
- 6:16Speaker 7: ups in the morning and then before I go to sleep,
- 6:18Speaker 7: just to keep my strength.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Don't say that too loud.
- 6:23Speaker 6: Of this man.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Speaking of college, you are you signed? So let people
- 6:30Speaker 4: know where you're going to college. And again, you had
- 6:33Speaker 4: multiple offers. I believe you got offered from Concord Fremont
- 6:37Speaker 4: in different schools to play some football, some basketball. So
- 6:41Speaker 4: let people know where you're going and what sport you're
- 6:44Speaker 4: gonna playing at the next level.
- 6:46Speaker 7: I've committed to the school in North Dakota's to Juco
- 6:48Speaker 7: is called Nueta Adata Spanish college, and it's I'm going
- 6:52Speaker 7: there to play basketball.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Okay, So what what? What was this? What decision?
- 6:57Speaker 4: What was behind the decision number one to play bass
- 7:00Speaker 4: basketball and then number two to go to that specific
- 7:02Speaker 4: university in North Dakota.
- 7:04Speaker 7: So the reason how I chose between basketball football? Honestly,
- 7:08Speaker 7: I love both the sports the same. I can't pick
- 7:10Speaker 7: which one I like more. But then I thought about
- 7:12Speaker 7: career wise and how long I would last, and football
- 7:16Speaker 7: usually you lasted probably about like twenty six and as
- 7:19Speaker 7: a running back, I'm getting hit every single place, So
- 7:21Speaker 7: that's a lot on the body, and for basketball could
- 7:23Speaker 7: make that last longer.
- 7:24Speaker 5: And with my.
- 7:25Speaker 7: Height, people expect me to choose football. That's what everybody expects,
- 7:29Speaker 7: So I want to do people don't expect. So I
- 7:31Speaker 7: want to try basketball. And the reason I chose this
- 7:34Speaker 7: school out there because I didn't have no official basketball offers.
- 7:39Speaker 5: I had zero office for basketball.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Okay, I thought I had the mistaken I thought you
- 7:42Speaker 4: had some basketball offers along with the I had.
- 7:44Speaker 7: I had some like not offers, but like I've like
- 7:48Speaker 7: cooped with colleges, went to some camps and stuff like that.
- 7:51Speaker 6: So he had to like invited to walk on at
- 7:52Speaker 6: different things of that nature.
- 7:53Speaker 7: Yes, contact that so, but all my offers was for football.
- 7:57Speaker 7: So when that opportunity came and I was like, Okay,
- 8:00Speaker 7: out there on a visit, I liked the school and everything.
- 8:02Speaker 5: Everything was good.
- 8:03Speaker 7: I got to hoop with the team for a little
- 8:05Speaker 7: bit and I was like, yeah, I think I like this,
- 8:07Speaker 7: So I went in and committed.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Okay, now, North Dakota, that's off the beaten path a
- 8:12Speaker 4: lot of people. Yeah, a lot of people would look
- 8:15Speaker 4: at me like, wow, that's number one as far it's
- 8:18Speaker 4: kind of the middle of nowhere. What are your thoughts
- 8:20Speaker 4: about going to a place that's maybe even a little
- 8:23Speaker 4: bit more isolated in West.
- 8:25Speaker 7: Virginia, I'm thinking of just grind. It's just like it's
- 8:28Speaker 7: a Juico. I gotta go out there and grind. Honestly,
- 8:30Speaker 7: I'm not looking there to stay all three years, because
- 8:32Speaker 7: I can go out there for three years and still
- 8:34Speaker 7: have college ouigeability. But now I'm going out there one
- 8:37Speaker 7: two years and I'm trying to get out get to
- 8:39Speaker 7: a better school so I can really start my college career.
- 8:43Speaker 4: If you if you had to, or if you may,
- 8:46Speaker 4: you may already know what are you looking for for
- 8:50Speaker 4: you from the jew code? Like are you looking to
- 8:53Speaker 4: get bigger, stronger, faster, get experienced at at a higher
- 8:59Speaker 4: level than in high school?
- 9:00Speaker 6: What is it?
- 9:01Speaker 4: What is the motivation to have you go to to
- 9:05Speaker 4: a juco and find out what it is?
- 9:09Speaker 6: If that's if there's something justifiable.
- 9:11Speaker 7: For My motivation is really just showing coaches what I
- 9:15Speaker 7: could do. I'm trying to make it to the next level,
- 9:17Speaker 7: and that's always my goal. I want to go d one,
- 9:19Speaker 7: and I'm looking to get better. I mean, I got
- 9:21Speaker 7: to develop my shot. My shot can always get better.
- 9:24Speaker 7: I can always develop my handles. Anything part of the
- 9:26Speaker 7: game can always get better. I'm never gonna be perfect anything,
- 9:29Speaker 7: So I'm just looking at everything.
- 9:32Speaker 5: I gotta get better.
- 9:33Speaker 8: Okay, So Malcolm, I'm going to take you back to
- 9:36Speaker 8: your your junior year in basketball at South Darleston High
- 9:40Speaker 8: School for a second. And you're scoring average. You know,
- 9:43Speaker 8: as a junior you scored like eleven point two points
- 9:47Speaker 8: per game, and then you jumped in your senior year
- 9:51Speaker 8: to an elite twenty two point two points per game.
- 9:54Speaker 8: What change in your training and your mindset that unlocked
- 9:57Speaker 8: that massive surge?
- 10:00Speaker 7: Honestly, I would say I had I had that talent
- 10:03Speaker 7: my junior year. It was just there was more. There
- 10:06Speaker 7: was more, like hands that needed to touch the ball.
- 10:10Speaker 7: My junior year, we had it. We were kind of
- 10:11Speaker 7: deep that year. It was me Roman Shady, we had
- 10:15Speaker 7: Team man Zane, we had we had a bunch of
- 10:17Speaker 7: Hoopers on the our squad that year, so I didn't
- 10:20Speaker 7: need to score twenty every game for us to get
- 10:22Speaker 7: a win. My senior year, I had a younger at
- 10:25Speaker 7: a younger squad because we had a lot of people
- 10:27Speaker 7: transferred from our mob, so I had I had to
- 10:30Speaker 7: get that twenty for us to be a competitive team
- 10:32Speaker 7: and win games.
- 10:33Speaker 4: I love that answer because a lot of times, when
- 10:36Speaker 4: you know, particularly in this day and age, when people
- 10:38Speaker 4: are I wouldn't say this day, and it's probably been
- 10:40Speaker 4: pervasive for a while, but too many times people just
- 10:44Speaker 4: look at a stat line without understanding the dynamics of
- 10:47Speaker 4: number one the team and number one what role you
- 10:50Speaker 4: need to have in the team. It's good that you
- 10:52Speaker 4: have that perspective because again, when you get to the
- 10:55Speaker 4: collegiate level, particularly and I'm your point guard, your point guards,
- 10:59Speaker 4: so your job could be you may be the score,
- 11:03Speaker 4: but again, depending on the makeup of the team, the
- 11:06Speaker 4: job could just be to run the offense executed. And
- 11:09Speaker 4: then going that way, why your stats may not reflect
- 11:12Speaker 4: what you actually mean to the organization and the team.
- 11:15Speaker 4: So that's a good way to like not only explain it,
- 11:18Speaker 4: but just to have that perspective early is important because
- 11:20Speaker 4: sometimes we just start at one level and then we
- 11:22Speaker 4: think we're supposed to do the exact same thing at
- 11:25Speaker 4: the next not understanding our role. And I think that's
- 11:28Speaker 4: a and I think I think that's a hard transition
- 11:32Speaker 4: for anybody, and for you to even be able to
- 11:36Speaker 4: say it out loud speaks volumes about you understanding what
- 11:42Speaker 4: a role that you may be going into, because in
- 11:45Speaker 4: most cases, Holliston, I think me and you would probably
- 11:49Speaker 4: say we were probably doing the same thing when we
- 11:51Speaker 4: go when we would be hitting the college, we thinking
- 11:55Speaker 4: the role is for me to be playing and it's
- 11:58Speaker 4: about me, you know. And for you to make that
- 12:01Speaker 4: kind of a statement speaks volumes of who and what
- 12:07Speaker 4: and how and your approach to this opportunity that you're getting.
- 12:11Speaker 6: And my hats off to you for that.
- 12:13Speaker 4: And let me ask you this, like as far and
- 12:15Speaker 4: again I know the concentration right now, is basketball moving
- 12:18Speaker 4: forward for the next year or two? Would there be
- 12:20Speaker 4: because again you know, as you acknowledge, the metrics are
- 12:24Speaker 4: the metrics, right, but again that doesn't always tell the story.
- 12:28Speaker 4: But would there be any in your mind? Would you
- 12:31Speaker 4: have any consideration for football down the line? Or is
- 12:35Speaker 4: it that you just shut the dream on that you
- 12:37Speaker 4: just focus on basketball at this point?
- 12:39Speaker 7: I mean, like, so when I went out to Virginia
- 12:42Speaker 7: and this is kind of off topic, but similar I
- 12:45Speaker 7: had to put football down for a while and football
- 12:47Speaker 7: came back, so I never really want to push it away.
- 12:49Speaker 7: But like, let's say, if I get to a D
- 12:52Speaker 7: one school for basketball, right and they would set me
- 12:54Speaker 7: to walk on for football, then yeah, I take that
- 12:57Speaker 7: opportunity again. Of course, because I'm a competitor and like
- 12:59Speaker 7: I said, I love the game, so I would always
- 13:01Speaker 7: put the pass back on one more time. But honestly, I'm
- 13:04Speaker 7: just focused on basketball until that opportunity comes.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Okay.
- 13:07Speaker 4: And that was kind of the deal at Conquer where
- 13:09Speaker 4: they wanted you to play both. Am I correcting it?
- 13:12Speaker 6: Yeah? It was.
- 13:12Speaker 7: It was talked about playing both when I went on
- 13:14Speaker 7: to the visit, but then new COACHEC came and I
- 13:18Speaker 7: never really got in contact with that coach.
- 13:19Speaker 6: Okay, got you all right?
- 13:22Speaker 8: So so do you like to be called Malcolm or LB?
- 13:25Speaker 8: What's your preference? I've called you both, so I want
- 13:27Speaker 8: to know.
- 13:28Speaker 6: What you like. I mean, I like LB.
- 13:31Speaker 5: That's whatever.
- 13:32Speaker 8: Okay, that's kind of what I thought, but I wanted
- 13:34Speaker 8: to make sure. So so LB, you know you're going
- 13:38Speaker 8: to be going to North Dakota in this you know,
- 13:40Speaker 8: new environment, you know, play to play basketball, hopefully to
- 13:44Speaker 8: make it to the next to the next steps, next levels.
- 13:48Speaker 8: What differences in training and and like the game nuances
- 13:52Speaker 8: do you expect transitioning from like the high school level
- 13:56Speaker 8: to the college level.
- 13:58Speaker 7: I'm expecting everybody to just be competitive. Honestly, everybody's gonna
- 14:02Speaker 7: be better. I'ma have to up my workouts is gonna
- 14:04Speaker 7: have to be harder, tempos, more workouts today. I'm gonna
- 14:07Speaker 7: have to not even just workouts, but the recovery part
- 14:11Speaker 7: of that too. I'ma have to get better at that
- 14:13Speaker 7: so I can be able to compete to my fullest
- 14:15Speaker 7: every time.
- 14:16Speaker 4: And I'll tell you this just again from somebody who
- 14:19Speaker 4: went from you know, playing here in the county and
- 14:23Speaker 4: then I just went to State, And I think what
- 14:25Speaker 4: you're gonna have to sort of think about and put
- 14:28Speaker 4: it in perspective is that the level of athleticism is
- 14:32Speaker 4: gonna jump. It's almost gonna be double triple. You're gonna
- 14:36Speaker 4: see guys and you're gonna wonder, like, how are you
- 14:40Speaker 4: what did you do to not be playing at a
- 14:43Speaker 4: power for school at this point. So again, and that's
- 14:46Speaker 4: kind of the part that nobody ever talks about. If
- 14:49Speaker 4: you're going from high school and you're playing at a
- 14:51Speaker 4: D two junior college, D one whatever, that athleticism is
- 14:56Speaker 4: gonna go piping and everybody's gonna be an at fleet
- 15:00Speaker 4: throughout the board.
- 15:01Speaker 6: And you know what I'm saying.
- 15:02Speaker 4: And again, it may be a variety of skill sets,
- 15:05Speaker 4: but you're gonna see some guys who are frequencily strong,
- 15:07Speaker 4: frequency fast, and and that's the thing that I would
- 15:11Speaker 4: warn you to get prepared for and start to train
- 15:14Speaker 4: your body in mind to like start to think about conceptualize.
- 15:17Speaker 6: And to and to that.
- 15:19Speaker 4: And I think everybody who everybody who goes to college,
- 15:23Speaker 4: and I don't even care if it's athletics. Everything is different.
- 15:27Speaker 4: Everything is gonna be a little bit more challenging, but
- 15:32Speaker 4: everything can be conquered right here.
- 15:35Speaker 6: Everything, Everything can be conquered right there.
- 15:38Speaker 4: And you know, because you're gonna what you're gonna do,
- 15:41Speaker 4: You're gonna go, You're gonna come in and there's gonna
- 15:43Speaker 4: be guys this tall, this, you know, doing these kinds
- 15:46Speaker 4: of things. You will not know where you're gonna be
- 15:51Speaker 4: in a year where your game is gonna be, because
- 15:56Speaker 4: once that year passes and you and you put your
- 15:59Speaker 4: game to that' to that space. That ain't even the
- 16:02Speaker 4: guy that was in high school. You won't even you
- 16:06Speaker 4: can't even remember him, because all of a sudden, once
- 16:11Speaker 4: you've seen that guy like Hollis, you you've gone against
- 16:14Speaker 4: him already. Now once you you know back here you're
- 16:17Speaker 4: going against me. But now you're going against Hollis. And
- 16:20Speaker 4: next thing you know, you you shooting at him, like
- 16:22Speaker 4: you going at him now, like I need to get
- 16:24Speaker 4: to him. Next thing you know, you done got him. Yeah,
- 16:28Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying. And and and that's when
- 16:32Speaker 4: you get there, point out, Okay, I'm going after him.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Yeah you I mean, cause you this is I don't
- 16:42Speaker 4: want to say this is. I mean, it's like war.
- 16:45Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying. You you you got to
- 16:47Speaker 4: get in and you got to figure out. Okay, somebody's
- 16:50Speaker 4: got somebody's playing point guard. I want to be the
- 16:53Speaker 4: point guard. Okay, let me look see what he's doing. Okay,
- 16:57Speaker 4: I can go after him, and I can go get him.
- 17:00Speaker 4: I believe I can get him. And the work now
- 17:04Speaker 4: all the focuses on him. All the work is to
- 17:07Speaker 4: get to him. Once you get there, now you're running
- 17:11Speaker 4: the squad. And again we won't mean to turn this
- 17:13Speaker 4: probably to an advice show, but it really is one
- 17:17Speaker 4: of them situations in which, like like you have to
- 17:21Speaker 4: perception wise, you have to take yourself and your emotions
- 17:24Speaker 4: out of one out of the thing, and you have
- 17:27Speaker 4: to be able to look at it objectively. So you
- 17:30Speaker 4: gotta say, if you if you running the B team
- 17:33Speaker 4: or the C team, possibly depending on me to catch
- 17:35Speaker 4: y'all got out there, and you're looking at that point guard,
- 17:38Speaker 4: you gotta be objectively. It can't just be like I'm
- 17:40Speaker 4: better than him, you know. You gotta objectively say, Okay,
- 17:42Speaker 4: he got better handles to me. I gotta get my
- 17:44Speaker 4: handles up. He got a better shot than me. I
- 17:46Speaker 4: gotta get my shots up. He can run the offense
- 17:48Speaker 4: better than me. I gotta get my I gotta do
- 17:50Speaker 4: that part better. You have to be able to take
- 17:53Speaker 4: your emotions out of it at the collegiate level, because
- 17:55Speaker 4: this is where guys fail.
- 17:57Speaker 6: Guys are equally.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Athletic, but they get a really emotional about what they
- 18:01Speaker 4: should or should not be, and then they can't think
- 18:04Speaker 4: past okay, this guy does this well, and this is
- 18:07Speaker 4: what I have to get better at in order to
- 18:09Speaker 4: compensate or do it better.
- 18:11Speaker 6: So you have to.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Really, that's the challenge of going to college because everybody's
- 18:16Speaker 4: gonna be athletic, everybody's gonna be top tier. And when
- 18:19Speaker 4: you at a juco, it's gunning because everybody trying to
- 18:22Speaker 4: get to the next level. Everybody trying to be out
- 18:24Speaker 4: of there forget. So I know some guys at the
- 18:26Speaker 4: semester as soon as it's a semester gone, I'm trying
- 18:28Speaker 4: to be out of there and go to you know,
- 18:30Speaker 4: D one or high level D two. So that would
- 18:33Speaker 4: be my advice. You take yourself out of it, look
- 18:35Speaker 4: at everything objectively, and work like a dog.
- 18:38Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying.
- 18:39Speaker 5: Definitely gonna have to. Like I said, it's definitely gonna
- 18:41Speaker 5: be a grind.
- 18:42Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure.
- 18:43Speaker 4: And I trust and I really trust that hearing you
- 18:46Speaker 4: when you say that, I can I can feel that,
- 18:50Speaker 4: and and even see watching you that you're you're ready
- 18:57Speaker 4: to put in the work, you know what I'm saying,
- 18:59Speaker 4: Like you like like, hey, don't worry about I'm gonna
- 19:02Speaker 4: put into work.
- 19:03Speaker 6: Tell me something else because I'm going to put into work.
- 19:05Speaker 4: And I can appreciate that, you know, because that is
- 19:09Speaker 4: that is the that is the game.
- 19:11Speaker 6: I don't care. I don't care what the sport is.
- 19:14Speaker 4: The work is the decision maker of who becomes the star,
- 19:19Speaker 4: who becomes the starter, and who becomes the star.
- 19:24Speaker 8: LB, don't listen to these guys. I mean, they're going
- 19:26Speaker 8: to guide you down the wrong, wrong, wrong road. But
- 19:29Speaker 8: I'm not joking. These two are great and they're giving
- 19:32Speaker 8: you really great advice. But so, so we know you're
- 19:35Speaker 8: going to the college in in north North Dakota. What
- 19:39Speaker 8: do you expect to study during your time in school there?
- 19:43Speaker 8: Are you just going to do general studies or do
- 19:45Speaker 8: you have some goals in mind?
- 19:47Speaker 5: I have other goals.
- 19:48Speaker 7: I would like to study pre engineering probably wow, because
- 19:51Speaker 7: I'm a I'm a math person, so math is my
- 19:54Speaker 7: strong suit. So I want to do some type of
- 19:55Speaker 7: engineering and says this is a juco and I want
- 19:57Speaker 7: to get to the next level.
- 19:58Speaker 6: I'm gonna just.
- 19:59Speaker 7: Start with pre engineering here, get a little base, and
- 20:01Speaker 7: then make it to the next level and then start
- 20:03Speaker 7: like engineering classes like with civil and stuff like that.
- 20:06Speaker 8: You know, being a former teacher, I love this so
- 20:09Speaker 8: much so that that's awesome that you're also considering what
- 20:12Speaker 8: academically you want to do at that level as well.
- 20:15Speaker 8: Along with athletics. So good for you.
- 20:17Speaker 4: You're way ahead of me, You're way ahead of where
- 20:21Speaker 4: I was.
- 20:22Speaker 8: Not a math.
- 20:23Speaker 6: I was not a math guy.
- 20:24Speaker 4: I wasn't and and and I am the prototype of
- 20:27Speaker 4: what you don't want to be. I wanted sports and
- 20:32Speaker 4: and and and academic peace. I'll just make my way
- 20:37Speaker 4: through it. I'll just work my way through it. I
- 20:39Speaker 4: just wanted to play ball. And you'll see those guys.
- 20:43Speaker 4: You know, you'll see those guys. But don't leave. Don't
- 20:47Speaker 4: don't leave the books. Whatever you do, do not leave
- 20:51Speaker 4: the books. Because fortunately for me, I was blessed to
- 20:55Speaker 4: get to where I got and.
- 20:57Speaker 6: You know so, so my life was okay.
- 21:00Speaker 4: But what if I hadn't, I had nothing to come
- 21:03Speaker 4: back on. And so make sure that you protect yourself. Yes, okay,
- 21:09Speaker 4: don't worry about the game. The game will take care
- 21:11Speaker 4: of itself. You do all that you can do for
- 21:13Speaker 4: the game, but protect yourself after the game, all right,
- 21:17Speaker 4: make sure you do that always, yes, sir. Well again, man,
- 21:21Speaker 4: I think this was you know again, just going back
- 21:23Speaker 4: to the original part of the conversation. Just being able
- 21:25Speaker 4: to play in the North South basketball and football is
- 21:29Speaker 4: pretty historic. So, like I said, man and I think
- 21:34Speaker 4: just that alone, being able to do both, and again,
- 21:37Speaker 4: let's just talk about it before we go. Man, you
- 21:39Speaker 4: had a pretty you know, historic career. You were only
- 21:42Speaker 4: a South Charleston two years correct, yes, sir, yeah, So
- 21:45Speaker 4: we end up you end up making All State in
- 21:47Speaker 4: both football and basketball, you know, conference player of the
- 21:53Speaker 4: Year All Kanall Valley first team football this past season,
- 21:57Speaker 4: rushed for twelve hundred touchdowns, two hundred yards pass and
- 22:02Speaker 4: one hundred and eighty receiving basketball, as Lisa articulated earlier,
- 22:06Speaker 4: average twenty three point second team All State, First Team,
- 22:10Speaker 4: Canaw Valley First Team All Conference. So again, on the
- 22:13Speaker 4: back of a pretty historic career you ended in the
- 22:15Speaker 4: state of West Virginia by playing off both all star games.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Pretty historic man. Congratulations brother, and we wish you the
- 22:21Speaker 4: best of luck.
- 22:21Speaker 5: Thank you, sir.
- 22:22Speaker 8: Congratulations.
- 22:23Speaker 4: All right, we'll be right back, ladies and gentlemen, just
- 22:26Speaker 4: a second.

- 23:45Speaker 3: real experience, real results, Frank Walker Law dot com. Let
- 23:49Speaker 3: that conversation begin on Let's talk.
- 23:53Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back and holla,
- 23:55Speaker 4: is you gonna take us somewhere? Yeah, this is a
- 23:57Speaker 4: story that's been floating in the headlines for you know,
- 24:00Speaker 4: about a week or two.
- 24:01Speaker 10: Now.
- 24:01Speaker 4: We didn't get to touch it last week, but you
- 24:05Speaker 4: know the current well, I guess former at this point.
- 24:07Speaker 4: Brendan Sowerby. He is or was the Texas Tech quarterback.
- 24:12Speaker 4: When he was a quarterback in Indiana as a freshman,
- 24:15Speaker 4: he allegedly gambled around ninety thousand dollars on various college games,
- 24:21Speaker 4: including college games he was technically playing in, but he
- 24:24Speaker 4: wasn't like playing as the backup quarterback.
- 24:26Speaker 6: He did playing the games.
- 24:28Speaker 4: So he got found that, you know, they found that out,
- 24:30Speaker 4: and he suspended. He transfers to Texas Tech. He foils
- 24:35Speaker 4: a suit against the n CUBA. They get an injunction
- 24:39Speaker 4: or the judge grants the injunction, so they technically would
- 24:43Speaker 4: have allowed him to play this year. There's been an uproar.
- 24:45Speaker 4: A lot of people were saying he shouldn't be allowed
- 24:48Speaker 4: to play. Some are with him, some team saying they're
- 24:50Speaker 4: going to boycott the game, blah blah blah blah blah.
- 24:53Speaker 4: In essence, again, I want to say, he drops the
- 24:56Speaker 4: suit or at least, you know, push the team and whatnot,
- 25:00Speaker 4: and he enters the supplemental draft. So there's a couple
- 25:02Speaker 4: of questions off of that. Now, I kind of just
- 25:06Speaker 4: want to, you know, give a hypo scenario. Do you think,
- 25:11Speaker 4: considering him gambling that if he stays at Texas, do
- 25:15Speaker 4: you think it was right for him to be banned
- 25:17Speaker 4: and suspended from the NCAA. Do you do you think
- 25:20Speaker 4: that's something that they should have done?
- 25:22Speaker 8: First of all, First of all, I want to counter
- 25:24Speaker 8: that question with the question of where did he get
- 25:27Speaker 8: ninety thousand dollars just to gamble? I know, but even
- 25:31Speaker 8: in the world of nil, that's excessive, right, means a lot.
- 25:35Speaker 4: But I guess that's over time, so it wasn't. Yeah,
- 25:38Speaker 4: but it's over a short time, so that's one or
- 25:40Speaker 4: two years, it's not a long time. So should he
- 25:43Speaker 4: be should he have been suspended? If you know, if
- 25:46Speaker 4: he stayed in college, should he be banned?
- 25:48Speaker 6: I guess.
- 25:49Speaker 8: I mean historically that's what's happened to athletes in the past.
- 25:52Speaker 8: But this is a whole new world. I mean, we're
- 25:54Speaker 8: in you know, sports, sports is in bed with gambling.
- 25:58Speaker 8: I mean you see it on ESPN. We've talked talked
- 26:00Speaker 8: about this before on the podcast. It is part of
- 26:03Speaker 8: our you know climate when it comes to any type
- 26:06Speaker 8: of professional or amateur athletic events. So you know, you
- 26:12Speaker 8: expose these these young men and women to to this,
- 26:16Speaker 8: you know, on a daily basis, and then you expect
- 26:18Speaker 8: them to ignore it and not participate in it. I mean,
- 26:21Speaker 8: I don't know. I mean I think I think we
- 26:23Speaker 8: need to change our rules. I think that they need
- 26:25Speaker 8: to be maybe if if you are, you know, gambling,
- 26:28Speaker 8: as long as it's not on your sport, kind of
- 26:30Speaker 8: like what they do with professionals. And I don't know,
- 26:34Speaker 8: I don't pretend to know what he was gambling.
- 26:36Speaker 6: On or what areas games?
- 26:38Speaker 4: Just games and things in baseball, Yeah, games he was
- 26:43Speaker 4: Actually if.
- 26:44Speaker 8: He's participating in them, then that's a whole different animal.
- 26:47Speaker 6: I guess he wasn't. He was a backup quarterback, so
- 26:50Speaker 6: he wasn't like play.
- 26:51Speaker 8: I don't care. I mean, what if you got thrown
- 26:53Speaker 8: into the game and he's, you know, got a bet
- 26:57Speaker 8: on the game. I mean that could affect the whole team, right.
- 27:00Speaker 6: Technically, right, I mean I can't.
- 27:02Speaker 4: Okay, I wanted to be last, Yeah, I mean I
- 27:08Speaker 4: would say, I mean I would agree with your your
- 27:12Speaker 4: your initial point, Lisa, that Number one Sports ESPN and
- 27:16Speaker 4: all the different organizations from college to professionals, they've gotten
- 27:20Speaker 4: so far entrenched with gambling that they're all one and
- 27:23Speaker 4: the same. I mean to the point where now I
- 27:25Speaker 4: remember back in the day, you would have like a
- 27:27Speaker 4: trend deal for the Ron Georgskowski and they would be
- 27:30Speaker 4: like like scientifically breaking down football and defenses and offense,
- 27:34Speaker 4: and they give you like this, you know, sort of
- 27:36Speaker 4: coaching clinic.
- 27:38Speaker 6: But now they don't have those guys.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Now they got like the better, so they like it's
- 27:42Speaker 4: it's one under I don't really know betting, right, And
- 27:46Speaker 4: so that's my first point is that the organizations have
- 27:49Speaker 4: gotten in bed and they're all making money off of
- 27:51Speaker 4: each other. And then my second point, gambling is an addiction.
- 27:55Speaker 4: It's no different than somebody being an alcoholic, no different
- 27:58Speaker 4: than somebody being a drug at it, there's some parts
- 28:00Speaker 4: of it where it's composive. And my last point is
- 28:02Speaker 4: that we're starting these addictions when kids are ten, eleven, twelve,
- 28:08Speaker 4: and then also feeding an addiction by giving them money
- 28:11Speaker 4: to do it at a at a level that's that
- 28:14Speaker 4: we've probably never seen before. So I would say I
- 28:18Speaker 4: don't think he should have been banned. I think you
- 28:20Speaker 4: get the treatment. Now again, if it's perpetual you just
- 28:22Speaker 4: keep doing the same thing, then we gotta we gotta
- 28:25Speaker 4: stop your right. But you know, I would say, you
- 28:28Speaker 4: know he needs treatment and you know he should be
- 28:30Speaker 4: allowed in my book. All right, So I'm I'm in
- 28:36Speaker 4: the league and you're telling me, you know that I
- 28:43Speaker 4: can't do this, I can't do that. And if I
- 28:45Speaker 4: do that, then I'm you know, the consequences are this
- 28:52Speaker 4: What what kills me now is gambling is so much bigger.
- 28:58Speaker 4: It's ten times bigger than it would have been back
- 29:01Speaker 4: in my day, and.
- 29:04Speaker 8: The consequences are way more severe, aren't that in your day?
- 29:07Speaker 6: They want yes, compare to yes.
- 29:09Speaker 4: That's the problem that I have with it is your
- 29:15Speaker 4: babysitting that that person who you catch or that you
- 29:20Speaker 4: know is doing something. Right, Like when you can say
- 29:24Speaker 4: a person's name that's gambling when you see it in
- 29:28Speaker 4: an article, you gotta be you got to be pretty
- 29:31Speaker 4: active if you're that person, right.
- 29:34Speaker 6: You got to be.
- 29:34Speaker 4: You're gambling a whether it be a lot of money
- 29:37Speaker 4: or frequent enough that people are talking about it.
- 29:39Speaker 10: Right.
- 29:42Speaker 4: So if that's the case, where's the investigation of the
- 29:46Speaker 4: NFL to find out if that's true. And let's say
- 29:49Speaker 4: in the ninety percent of the time, I'm going to
- 29:51Speaker 4: make the case that it's been true, right, I mean,
- 29:54Speaker 4: I would say a large portion, large portion that they
- 29:59Speaker 4: quote unquote they have found they have found that person
- 30:02Speaker 4: to be guilty of gambling.
- 30:06Speaker 8: Different.
- 30:07Speaker 4: But but you're not doing anything about it. You're not really,
- 30:12Speaker 4: you're not really, you're not making you're not scaring me
- 30:15Speaker 4: as a as a person who's gambling. You're not scaring
- 30:18Speaker 4: me from gambling for me to go gamble. Well, I
- 30:21Speaker 4: think the NBA has suspended a bunch of guys and
- 30:24Speaker 4: those things, and some of them got criminal charges. I
- 30:28Speaker 4: mean if criminal charges that ain't got nothing.
- 30:30Speaker 6: To do with them. Yeah, I see what you're saying.
- 30:32Speaker 4: But I think the difference is now, like back in
- 30:35Speaker 4: your day, gambling was it was it had a seed
- 30:38Speaker 4: element to it. So I had a mob or gangster
- 30:41Speaker 4: that were bookies, so it was a dangerous for you.
- 30:43Speaker 4: You can get your kneecaps broke there back in the day,
- 30:46Speaker 4: right back. But now they ain't the case. So it's
- 30:48Speaker 4: like and again you throw it in a person's face
- 30:51Speaker 4: so much and you got so much disposable income.
- 30:55Speaker 6: I agree.
- 30:56Speaker 4: I mean that's just in your in you're seventeen eighteen. Yeah,
- 31:00Speaker 4: ability to gain on ninety thousand dollars. I mean, but
- 31:03Speaker 4: here's my here's my problem though, here's not so, So
- 31:06Speaker 4: before you answer that should he should? He should he
- 31:08Speaker 4: been banned from the the n C Double A for
- 31:10Speaker 4: life or not. I don't think for life, but suspended,
- 31:15Speaker 4: suspending something you got, you gotta you gotta do something,
- 31:20Speaker 4: something that's gonna make me not do it, something that's
- 31:22Speaker 4: gonna make you.
- 31:24Speaker 8: Need to set an example, the.
- 31:26Speaker 4: Example when you're in bed with him. I don't understand.
- 31:29Speaker 4: That's my that was, that was my confence. That was
- 31:32Speaker 4: gonna be my conversation to you.
- 31:33Speaker 8: And the other part of it. It's not illegal, I
- 31:36Speaker 8: mean it's really not. It is gambling. I mean it's
- 31:40Speaker 8: illegal for the n C Double A players, but for
- 31:43Speaker 8: their regulations. Yeah, but I mean in the free world
- 31:46Speaker 8: you can gamble.
- 31:47Speaker 6: I don't even think it's illegal. I think it's policy.
- 31:49Speaker 6: So you may, right.
- 31:51Speaker 4: Because if you give me money as as as an
- 31:53Speaker 4: organization and I go gamble it away, that's not illegal.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Well what I'm saying, but you can't have gambled on
- 32:01Speaker 4: something it's like insider trading. I can't gamble on something
- 32:04Speaker 4: that I'm participating.
- 32:05Speaker 8: In, right, and that's what happened the prediction.
- 32:08Speaker 4: Yeah, the prediction markets are a little different. But when
- 32:11Speaker 4: we're just talking about straight gambling, I can't. That's like
- 32:14Speaker 4: inside of trading. I can't gamble on something that I
- 32:16Speaker 4: can control the outcome. Sure, that's when we would start
- 32:19Speaker 4: to get some charges here, and.
- 32:21Speaker 8: So that's where we would need to know that the
- 32:24Speaker 8: you know, yeah, the clarification of was he gambling on
- 32:27Speaker 8: actually the games that TCU was participating in or you.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Know, but he didn't but he didn't play in any
- 32:34Speaker 4: of those games.
- 32:35Speaker 8: I still think that's again, especially if you're a backup quarterback,
- 32:40Speaker 8: right he was, he could have potentially been thrown into
- 32:44Speaker 8: a game with an injury.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Okay, so let me ask a different question. So he
- 32:49Speaker 4: drops the lawsuit, and again you remembered a Federal Supreme
- 32:54Speaker 4: Court judge that was one of his points in granting
- 32:57Speaker 4: the injunction for a loudest kid to play it to
- 33:00Speaker 4: take saying, hey, the n C double a, y'all in
- 33:02Speaker 4: bed with his gambling too, So it's all bad.
- 33:04Speaker 6: Right.
- 33:05Speaker 4: So anyway, I believe he drops the suit, so he
- 33:08Speaker 4: enters the NFL supplemental Draft. Should the NFL was because
- 33:14Speaker 4: it's predicted he'll get drafted, So should the NFL suspend
- 33:19Speaker 4: him once he gets drafted? Should they suspend it like
- 33:21Speaker 4: a couple of games or whatever. I would think it
- 33:24Speaker 4: would be the perfect example, but I know that they won't.
- 33:26Speaker 8: I'm just saying that it doesn't happen at the NFL level.
- 33:30Speaker 8: What happened at the collegiate level. But he's paying wands
- 33:34Speaker 8: at that level. He shouldn't have to pay for him again.
- 33:36Speaker 6: But it's happened before.
- 33:38Speaker 4: I want to say, Marcus Russell or Cam New somebody's
- 33:40Speaker 4: got suspended coming one of it from college, coming from
- 33:44Speaker 4: college to the NFL. One of them cats that got suspended.
- 33:47Speaker 4: If you come, if you're coming on my team, okay,
- 33:50Speaker 4: If you're coming as as a as a freshman or
- 33:52Speaker 4: a rookie on my team, okay, And you got a
- 33:56Speaker 4: history of gambling on your team.
- 33:58Speaker 8: But if you've already paid for the concert, I don't care.
- 34:00Speaker 6: I don't care about the consequences about that. I don't
- 34:02Speaker 6: care about the consequence.
- 34:03Speaker 8: You don't better when you come when you you've already
- 34:07Speaker 8: paid your Yeah, you've already paid for your your your
- 34:12Speaker 8: punishments at the n C double A level, and now
- 34:14Speaker 8: you're going to pay for him again. Technically he didn't well,
- 34:17Speaker 8: but he got the bad publicity. So I mean in
- 34:19Speaker 8: a way that that's that's enough.
- 34:21Speaker 4: And I heard and I read his publicity, okay, and
- 34:24Speaker 4: I don't like it.
- 34:25Speaker 6: I don't like him coming. So do you suspend him?
- 34:29Speaker 4: Do you do something like if you if you're if
- 34:31Speaker 4: you're coaching Minnesota by or forget that, your administrator at
- 34:35Speaker 4: Minnesota Bay, you like the kid, You're gonna bring him
- 34:37Speaker 4: in in light of all this, do you say, Okay,
- 34:40Speaker 4: we're gonna bring you in. We're gonna we like you,
- 34:41Speaker 4: but we got to suspend you a couple of games. Okay,
- 34:43Speaker 4: I'm too old because I'm not bringing you.
- 34:45Speaker 6: I'm just saying you.
- 34:46Speaker 4: Did if you didn't have any control, if you didn't
- 34:49Speaker 4: have controls the draft, but you have control over there, Okay,
- 34:55Speaker 4: do you suspend them?
- 34:56Speaker 11: Especially you're talking about was for a much lesser thing
- 34:59Speaker 11: than that. It was Terrell prior. It was an involving
- 35:04Speaker 11: a scandal of the Ohio State. It included selling memorabilia
- 35:08Speaker 11: for yes, yes, nothing gambling, just selling memorabilia.
- 35:12Speaker 8: Yes, it's like nil stuff. Now that's what you do legally.
- 35:15Speaker 4: I well, that don't bother me, right, No, No, but it
- 35:18Speaker 4: was illegal at the time. Was a big huge deal
- 35:21Speaker 4: he did that. He left Ohio State, he gets drafted
- 35:24Speaker 4: by I want to say Cleveland or the Raiders, and
- 35:26Speaker 4: then they suspend him based off what he did in college.
- 35:29Speaker 4: So what I'm saying is like, if you if he's
- 35:31Speaker 4: on your team, you charge a play personnel whatever. You
- 35:34Speaker 4: didn't draft him, but he's on your team and you
- 35:36Speaker 4: have control whether you suspend him. Do you suspend him
- 35:38Speaker 4: or do you just like that happening? We ain't worried
- 35:40Speaker 4: about that. I'm going to suspend him because I'm going
- 35:43Speaker 4: to just show that he's aware of what we're not
- 35:46Speaker 4: going to do, what we can't do here, what we're
- 35:48Speaker 4: not You like that, I.
- 35:50Speaker 8: Don't like it at all.
- 35:52Speaker 4: I wouldn't expect you all to. I would make him.
- 35:55Speaker 4: I would make him go to treatment. So if that
- 35:58Speaker 4: would be my request, I mean, like, if we drafted,
- 36:01Speaker 4: you're gonna go to the treatment, but you're gonna stay
- 36:04Speaker 4: in treatment for an extended period of time. Okay, So
- 36:07Speaker 4: I'm going to treatment. I'm went you, I could have
- 36:10Speaker 4: said treatment. I wanted him to get treatment. What I'm but,
- 36:13Speaker 4: but he's not playing until he gets treatment. And we're okay,
- 36:20Speaker 4: he's not playing that he's not he's not playing for me.
- 36:23Speaker 6: But but I, but I, but I just don't understand.
- 36:25Speaker 4: Okay, So if he's the kid, then you saying, okay,
- 36:28Speaker 4: we're getting we get we got fan duel on our jerseys.
- 36:34Speaker 8: Exactly, that's right.
- 36:36Speaker 6: I'm not the person who's gonna do that.
- 36:38Speaker 4: But I know that what I'm saying, the organization, you
- 36:41Speaker 4: don't have control of that. If I don't have control
- 36:44Speaker 4: of what I wear, Okay, if I don't have control
- 36:46Speaker 4: of what I wear, which to me, that's a that's
- 36:50Speaker 4: a Again, that's the league asking asking for money, getting
- 36:56Speaker 4: it representing something that you don't want your players to do.
- 37:00Speaker 4: How do you justify that it makes no sense when
- 37:03Speaker 4: it's so easy.
- 37:04Speaker 6: I don't understand.
- 37:06Speaker 8: I mean, we've said that it's time and time on here,
- 37:09Speaker 8: it's it's it's all about money. And and the players,
- 37:12Speaker 8: you know, they're young, they're impressionable, you know, like I said,
- 37:15Speaker 8: it's in their face that they see it all the time.
- 37:18Speaker 8: And it's it's very tempting. It's it's an easy way
- 37:20Speaker 8: to you know, play some and you know, it's it's
- 37:23Speaker 8: kind of like a you know, probably an adrenaline rush
- 37:26Speaker 8: for these guys. But and they like that. You know,
- 37:28Speaker 8: they're athletes or college athletes, so you know, it's kind
- 37:31Speaker 8: of fun to tempt fate and kind of walk the
- 37:33Speaker 8: line of legalities. I mean, I don't know. I just
- 37:36Speaker 8: think they got a lot around to deal with.
- 37:41Speaker 4: When you were playing, it was like it was it
- 37:44Speaker 4: was the parlay cards. So my thing was like parlay cards,
- 37:47Speaker 4: and you would like they would bet like on It
- 37:49Speaker 4: wasn't every game they can write on. It was like
- 37:51Speaker 4: just the specific like kind of the higher end, bigger game.
- 37:55Speaker 4: So but I listened to this like podcast or something,
- 37:59Speaker 4: and you and it was in the gambling attic. He
- 38:01Speaker 4: was like articulating like what his day was like. This
- 38:04Speaker 4: dude would be like not only gambling on here in
- 38:07Speaker 4: American sports and all our major sports, he would be
- 38:09Speaker 4: gambling like on women's basketball in Turkey and like ping
- 38:13Speaker 4: pong like overseas. So he'd be up in the middle
- 38:15Speaker 4: of the night on his computer like watching all these games.
- 38:18Speaker 4: He would literally be gambling twenty four hours a day
- 38:21Speaker 4: on something considering the sports. So I just think, like
- 38:24Speaker 4: I said, in light of how accessible it is, because
- 38:27Speaker 4: back in the day, in the eighties and the seventies,
- 38:30Speaker 4: you just couldn't go to your your local.
- 38:33Speaker 6: You had to know somebody that knows somebody.
- 38:35Speaker 8: You couldn't pick up a self and gamble. I mean,
- 38:38Speaker 8: that's it right there.
- 38:39Speaker 4: You had to know like that, you know, you know,
- 38:41Speaker 4: you had to be entrenched a little bit in the
- 38:43Speaker 4: underworld to kind of make those bets, and it was
- 38:45Speaker 4: a lot more dangerous. So I understood the severity of
- 38:47Speaker 4: why they wouldn't want their dudes doing that because it
- 38:50Speaker 4: could just affect if you can get killed, right, But
- 38:53Speaker 4: now that's not the case, and I think we have
- 38:54Speaker 4: to I don't know, we just who's got to make
- 38:57Speaker 4: a decision about what we want.
- 38:59Speaker 6: I mean, because at the end of.
- 39:00Speaker 4: The day, this, this is somebody's fault of putting gambling
- 39:07Speaker 4: in sports as as easy with such an easy access
- 39:11Speaker 4: to the key, and you want and you don't want
- 39:16Speaker 4: your players to gamble, but you're you're making it so
- 39:19Speaker 4: easy to do it.
- 39:22Speaker 6: Why wouldn't I do?
- 39:23Speaker 4: I mean, I'm sure there's a lot. There was probably
- 39:25Speaker 4: a line on the North South game, you know what
- 39:27Speaker 4: I mean. I'm sure like somebody had like a line
- 39:30Speaker 4: on that.
- 39:30Speaker 6: You can probably doubt it, you know what I mean.
- 39:33Speaker 6: It's just it's and.
- 39:35Speaker 4: It brings up the point as far as like, you know,
- 39:38Speaker 4: I think there's integrity of the game issues because you know,
- 39:43Speaker 4: you're inevitably going to have somebody that's I mean, you
- 39:45Speaker 4: probably already do have somebody that's like betting on the
- 39:48Speaker 4: game that they're participating actually playing in. So I just
- 39:52Speaker 4: I think we're gonna we're gonna see problems like this
- 39:56Speaker 4: probably continue until we like make a decision about what
- 39:59Speaker 4: we're gonna do. Can you can you see yourself betting
- 40:02Speaker 4: on a team.
- 40:04Speaker 6: That you're playing. I can't, cause I'm just not a gambler.
- 40:08Speaker 8: I don't.
- 40:09Speaker 6: I don't like the game.
- 40:10Speaker 4: It's like gambling and like a roller coasters that don't
- 40:14Speaker 4: nothing like it. Just don't. I'm telling you, Like, it's
- 40:20Speaker 4: just like it's like why do you want to do that? Like,
- 40:23Speaker 4: I don't want to be scared.
- 40:24Speaker 8: I can't even imagine being in those those shoes and
- 40:27Speaker 8: in the opportunity ahead of you of playing at the
- 40:30Speaker 8: professional level and risking it all for gambling. Like you know,
- 40:34Speaker 8: I mean not only the money that that you're giving up,
- 40:38Speaker 8: possibly by getting caught doing these risky types of bets,
- 40:43Speaker 8: but just the prestige. It just it just kind of
- 40:46Speaker 8: tarnishes your name and your I don't think it ever
- 40:49Speaker 8: goes career, It doesn't go away. But see I would should, but.
- 40:53Speaker 4: I would disagree with that because I don't think their peers.
- 40:56Speaker 4: I think their peers understand that. I think their peers
- 40:59Speaker 4: under like Piers probably understand kind of what he was thinking.
- 41:03Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying.
- 41:04Speaker 8: Not the older generation like Carl.
- 41:06Speaker 4: L I, but but I think people probably, But I
- 41:12Speaker 4: think people of his age group and close to that,
- 41:14Speaker 4: I think they they get it where we just don't
- 41:17Speaker 4: because we didn't grow up with like everything is gambling.
- 41:19Speaker 4: I mean, you know, it's it's so bad, Like I said,
- 41:22Speaker 4: it's so bad where you can just literally just do
- 41:25Speaker 4: it all day long. So you're gonna get them dopamine hits,
- 41:28Speaker 4: because this dopamine hits whether you're casting the bet or
- 41:32Speaker 4: winning from the bet. Yeah, you know what I'm saying,
- 41:34Speaker 4: it's even a dopamine hit, Like if you're losing and
- 41:36Speaker 4: you have the you're trying to think of a way
- 41:39Speaker 4: to like get the money back, you know what I mean.
- 41:41Speaker 4: So it's all this dopamine constantly going off. That's why
- 41:43Speaker 4: I said, like it's an addiction issue, and we're basically
- 41:47Speaker 4: pretty much just you know. It's like I think we're
- 41:50Speaker 4: gonna look back, maybe in twenty years and look at this,
- 41:52Speaker 4: like like the Cammel cigarette person, remember that back in
- 41:56Speaker 4: the day, you said, remember the Campbell what was the name?
- 41:59Speaker 6: Cool Joe?
- 42:00Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, Like they literally they literally
- 42:03Speaker 4: used to have a joke. They really used to have
- 42:07Speaker 4: a can a cartoon making newports look cool.
- 42:12Speaker 6: Literally, think about how we grew up.
- 42:15Speaker 8: But okay, yeah we had candy cigarettes.
- 42:19Speaker 6: I mean, you know what I mean.
- 42:22Speaker 4: Smoking was cool, but but it was it was something
- 42:25Speaker 4: that you knew not to do. You had a whole
- 42:29Speaker 4: generation of smokers. My mom, my mom used to smoke.
- 42:31Speaker 4: My dad was a smoker. And how many your brothers
- 42:35Speaker 4: and sisters smoker? None?
- 42:37Speaker 6: None?
- 42:38Speaker 3: Not one?
- 42:40Speaker 6: Did you did they smoke in the house?
- 42:42Speaker 8: Didn't Snoopy take over the Joe cool type of nickname though,
- 42:46Speaker 8: Snoopy the dog? Why do I want to think that
- 42:49Speaker 8: I don't know the reason they tried to clean it
- 42:51Speaker 8: up a little bit. I don't know, not cigarette related.
- 42:54Speaker 8: I'm just saying in general.
- 42:56Speaker 4: The reason why we didn't smoke one, we didn't like it.
- 42:59Speaker 4: And if we would have, if Mom or Dad would
- 43:04Speaker 4: have caught us smoking anywhere anything, you you'd likely to
- 43:09Speaker 4: get killed.
- 43:10Speaker 6: In that house.
- 43:11Speaker 4: Yeah, but I mean it's like, you know, but that's
- 43:13Speaker 4: one side of another side of how in the world.
- 43:15Speaker 8: Did we get on this subject. Okay, we're moving on
- 43:18Speaker 8: to soccer. We have a little bit of time. Let's
- 43:20Speaker 8: talk about soccer. So anybody watched World Cup? Anybody listen? Okay,
- 43:26Speaker 8: you watched more than me. I'm gonna be on because
- 43:28Speaker 8: I haven't watched it.
- 43:29Speaker 4: I should have, And I'm telling you I watched it
- 43:36Speaker 4: for probably about an hour or so. And I'm telling you,
- 43:40Speaker 4: I was so amazed.
- 43:43Speaker 8: Oh the endurance.
- 43:45Speaker 4: The endurance, the footwork, the body movements and head adjustments
- 43:52Speaker 4: to hit the ball. It gave me a whole another
- 43:59Speaker 4: thought process as about it. I always respected it, but
- 44:06Speaker 4: like that was like the best of the best, and
- 44:10Speaker 4: my goodness, it was. It was unbelievable and I and
- 44:14Speaker 4: I and I wonder, you know, some of those guys
- 44:19Speaker 4: like the footwork part of it. I don't know if
- 44:22Speaker 4: they could stand the physicality of it maybe, but the
- 44:25Speaker 4: footwork and the and the endurance talent is unbelievable to me. Yeah,
- 44:32Speaker 4: Like if you go to like a higher level soccer
- 44:35Speaker 4: you know, like I said, I watched a little bit
- 44:37Speaker 4: of it, but like even going to like watching you
- 44:39Speaker 4: see which is like a premier you know, college program,
- 44:42Speaker 4: and you actually.
- 44:43Speaker 6: Get to see it, It's pretty amazing.
- 44:46Speaker 4: The way anything and the thing is soccer to me
- 44:49Speaker 4: is like if you have the right angle, so if
- 44:52Speaker 4: I can see it from I like kind of the
- 44:53Speaker 4: way they shoot it on TV where I can see
- 44:55Speaker 4: from the bird's eye view because it's it's it's just
- 44:57Speaker 4: basketball kind of with your feet. If you kind to
- 45:00Speaker 4: conceptualize it that way, it's really really a good game.
- 45:04Speaker 4: And I think that, you know, if I said it before,
- 45:06Speaker 4: I think, you know, as much as we think we
- 45:08Speaker 4: a football state, I think we are moving closer and
- 45:12Speaker 4: closer towards a soccer state in West Virginia.
- 45:14Speaker 8: That was going to be my next question I'm going
- 45:16Speaker 8: to ask you guys about but why do you think
- 45:19Speaker 8: it is Internationally? Soccer is more popular than American football.
- 45:23Speaker 8: I mean, what what globally this is the sport.
- 45:26Speaker 6: This is cheap yeah, cheap balling in there, you know.
- 45:31Speaker 4: And the shirt because I always get amazed when people say, oh,
- 45:33Speaker 4: let's just start your own football. Do you know how
- 45:36Speaker 4: much it costs to outfit one football.
- 45:38Speaker 8: Player, right, it's a couple.
- 45:40Speaker 6: Of thousand dollars. Yeah.
- 45:42Speaker 4: And when football, like I said, not only is it
- 45:45Speaker 4: super expensive to like just like just to provide the outfit, equipment,
- 45:49Speaker 4: all that other stuff football you need about par you
- 45:53Speaker 4: need about ten coaches just just to be like, just
- 45:57Speaker 4: to make sure all your bases are covering, you need
- 45:59Speaker 4: about at least I would say ten coaches. So I
- 46:02Speaker 4: think soccer is just more accessible. It's cheaper, and it's
- 46:06Speaker 4: just sort of easier to get started. And like I said,
- 46:08Speaker 4: I think the environment, you know, the way they have
- 46:12Speaker 4: the like I love the soccer system because you can
- 46:15Speaker 4: have like this little rinky dink basically imagine imagine the
- 46:19Speaker 4: Dirty Birds having an opportunity to play in the Major League,
- 46:24Speaker 4: like you could move up like so if you so yeah,
- 46:28Speaker 4: so if you like if European soccer, so if you win,
- 46:30Speaker 4: like if the Dirty Birds way like win the division,
- 46:32Speaker 4: they can move up to the next division. They win
- 46:34Speaker 4: that or do good, they can move up and up
- 46:36Speaker 4: it and they would literally have a chance to West Charles,
- 46:39Speaker 4: WESTGI can have a major League baseball team if we
- 46:42Speaker 4: had the same system as soccer. So I think that
- 46:45Speaker 4: to me far as what makes it popular because you
- 46:48Speaker 4: could take your little town it's like it's little towns.
- 46:50Speaker 8: In like they can play it almost anywhere.
- 46:53Speaker 4: You play it anywhere, and your club could literally go
- 46:55Speaker 4: from just this as RinkyDink rec league to you know,
- 46:59Speaker 4: playing like their premier leagues and different things of that nature.
- 47:03Speaker 6: I didn't know.
- 47:04Speaker 4: I didn't know any of that part of it, but man,
- 47:08Speaker 4: I was just watching it and you know, and then
- 47:10Speaker 4: and the replays where they are showing, you know, the
- 47:13Speaker 4: footwork and.
- 47:14Speaker 6: All that kind of stuff.
- 47:15Speaker 4: Man, that is like and I'm a I'm a crazy,
- 47:18Speaker 4: I'm a nut over you know, footwork and just how
- 47:22Speaker 4: they are able to manage Like how do you position
- 47:27Speaker 4: your body when the balls coming in at you at
- 47:29Speaker 4: an angle? And are you going to position your body
- 47:31Speaker 4: to where your head is going to hit it and
- 47:34Speaker 4: it's going to hit.
- 47:34Speaker 6: It too hollow?
- 47:35Speaker 4: Yeah, Like how how does that work, Like how long
- 47:40Speaker 4: does it take to become a profession a true professional?
- 47:45Speaker 8: You have to tie your hands behind your back, that's
- 47:47Speaker 8: for sure. That's probably the first set is that your
- 47:52Speaker 8: automatic like that's an automatic reflex is to use your hands. Yeah,
- 47:56Speaker 8: I'm all that to me, that's amazing that they can
- 47:59Speaker 8: do that.
- 48:00Speaker 4: In addition to that, like I said, not only they
- 48:02Speaker 4: have that sort of system where you can kind of
- 48:04Speaker 4: move up and down, but they also you know, you
- 48:06Speaker 4: look FIFA World Cup, you have you know, obviously the Olympics,
- 48:11Speaker 4: so you have all these like international contests too. So
- 48:13Speaker 4: I think it's just like I said, I think it's
- 48:16Speaker 4: one of them games that football better be very very
- 48:19Speaker 4: conscious because I think after a while America, you're going
- 48:23Speaker 4: to have your very best of your best athlete, remember
- 48:25Speaker 4: your best. Like a Dave Winfield, he got drafted in
- 48:28Speaker 4: all three sports at the major at the professional level.
- 48:30Speaker 4: He plays baseball. A guy like Lebron is gonna play basketball.
- 48:33Speaker 4: Now we have obviously like Adona played football. I think
- 48:36Speaker 4: you're going to.
- 48:37Speaker 6: Have that type of guy and that guy's gonna play soccer.
- 48:40Speaker 8: Do you guys know what FIFA stands for? Do you
- 48:42Speaker 8: know the acronym.
- 48:44Speaker 6: I'm Internet.
- 48:45Speaker 8: I had to look it up because I wanted to know,
- 48:47Speaker 8: So I'm going to do it in my best French
- 48:49Speaker 8: accent because it is a French acronym Federation internationale dave
- 48:55Speaker 8: football Association.
- 48:56Speaker 6: Sweet yeah, but.
- 48:58Speaker 8: In English it means international a old federation of association football.
- 49:04Speaker 6: I think the French one is probably good.
- 49:06Speaker 8: Probably just the way I spoke, that's what it is.
- 49:11Speaker 4: But I do all right, the question for both of you,
- 49:16Speaker 4: and you can elaborate, but we only got a few
- 49:18Speaker 4: more minutes left.
- 49:19Speaker 6: But can you see.
- 49:24Speaker 10: In in the future, I won't even say the near
- 49:26Speaker 10: future soccer becoming the primary sport, whether it be high school,
- 49:34Speaker 10: whether it be college. I don't think it will ever
- 49:36Speaker 10: take over the NFL or anything like that, but I'm
- 49:39Speaker 10: but I'm thinking everywhere down.
- 49:41Speaker 6: I think the struggle is going to.
- 49:43Speaker 8: Be you can't have an NFL if you don't have
- 49:45Speaker 8: the whole.
- 49:46Speaker 4: I understand foundation, I understand that, all all the structure
- 49:51Speaker 4: that's got to get there, but that doesn't make that
- 49:53Speaker 4: doesn't stop.
- 49:54Speaker 6: You from being a bigger sport than high school.
- 49:58Speaker 4: Like high cool football is high school football versus high
- 50:03Speaker 4: school soccer, which one wins that I would say.
- 50:08Speaker 6: I would say I just my opinion.
- 50:12Speaker 4: I think regionally, it's gonna be a region that pops
- 50:16Speaker 4: up where soccer is gonna be the thing to do.
- 50:19Speaker 4: Like I don't think ever in the South, football is
- 50:21Speaker 4: gonna always be king in. In the Northeast, basketball or
- 50:26Speaker 4: at least it was, basketball is always gonna be that.
- 50:28Speaker 4: But I think there's gonna be regions in the country,
- 50:31Speaker 4: or maybe not in regions, but spots in the country
- 50:33Speaker 4: where soccer is gonna be.
- 50:36Speaker 6: Premier.
- 50:37Speaker 4: And you don't think that's gonna happen here. I don't
- 50:40Speaker 4: think it's here because I think we're still like far
- 50:41Speaker 4: as we're still South. Football is so like I think
- 50:45Speaker 4: the thing they've always said about football, it's just so
- 50:48Speaker 4: community right because not only do you just have the
- 50:51Speaker 4: football team, but you got cheerleaders, you got the band,
- 50:53Speaker 4: you got the major ed, you got.
- 50:55Speaker 6: The comor guard.
- 50:56Speaker 4: It's so it really involves the whole community when you
- 51:00Speaker 4: go to like a football game. So I don't think
- 51:03Speaker 4: any sport has that part of it down. And if
- 51:06Speaker 4: you got to give football team, the town is shutting down.
- 51:10Speaker 4: So I don't think soccer will be able to like, yes,
- 51:12Speaker 4: you do have that.
- 51:13Speaker 6: Football team, I agree with you.
- 51:16Speaker 4: If you don't and you've got soccer, I think you
- 51:20Speaker 4: got a problem.
- 51:21Speaker 6: And that's what I'm saying.
- 51:22Speaker 4: If you like to me, it would depend Again, I
- 51:24Speaker 4: think it's gonna be regional and it's gonna be in spots.
- 51:27Speaker 4: So it's going to depend on the athlete. Imagine like
- 51:29Speaker 4: a Randy Moss saying, well, I ain't playing football, I'm
- 51:32Speaker 4: gonna play soccer. If you got a Randy Moss, they're
- 51:35Speaker 4: saying I'm a soccer player, that's when you're gonna have problem.
- 51:39Speaker 6: That's what football is gonna happen.
- 51:41Speaker 8: And for me, I don't think the media will ever
- 51:43Speaker 8: let that happen as well. You know, I don't know,
- 51:46Speaker 8: because I mean you think about it. Do you think
- 51:47Speaker 8: how exciting would be Friday night lights or even college
- 51:51Speaker 8: game day at a soccer game.
- 51:53Speaker 4: If you have a Randy Moss lebron it's the star that.
- 51:59Speaker 8: You you got the mascot. I mean, maybe they could
- 52:03Speaker 8: add those elements more exciting, but I just don't see.
- 52:08Speaker 6: You know, see, here's my thing to it.
- 52:10Speaker 4: And I don't mean to cut you off that no, No,
- 52:13Speaker 4: you bring up the Pergnant point your point is the
- 52:15Speaker 4: pergeint point. The thing that America has to figure out.
- 52:19Speaker 4: America has to put American touches on soccer. So you
- 52:23Speaker 4: can't have like FC f C Charles westro Gian What what's.
- 52:28Speaker 6: F C Charles? You know what I'm saying, you can't
- 52:30Speaker 6: have that.
- 52:31Speaker 4: So I think the thing that we're gonna not only
- 52:33Speaker 4: do you if you have the Star, because I think
- 52:35Speaker 4: if you have the Star, that alone kind of curves it.
- 52:38Speaker 4: But once we actually figure out we're gonna put our
- 52:40Speaker 4: American touches on this thing, and it's going to be
- 52:43Speaker 4: like it's going to be American. We're going to have
- 52:46Speaker 4: the major s, we're gonna have you know, I don't
- 52:48Speaker 4: know who, cheerleaders or whatever. Once we figured that part out,
- 52:52Speaker 4: then I think that's when you're gonna see it. Because
- 52:55Speaker 4: I would say the same thing we saw the New
- 52:56Speaker 4: York Nick. Everybody was rooting on Knicks. That's an American state,
- 53:00Speaker 4: our basketball team that just won the NBA Championship, and
- 53:03Speaker 4: that's why even non New York fans were excited. So
- 53:05Speaker 4: I think to your point, Lisa, now if we figure
- 53:08Speaker 4: that part out, that's when we're doomed. Fotball yeah, I
- 53:14Speaker 4: really think soccer is a huge challenge. I'm telling you
- 53:18Speaker 4: for football, even for the athlete who's really good, I
- 53:22Speaker 4: think he he may slide over to soccer and leave football.
- 53:26Speaker 8: The money that these investors and and you know, these
- 53:30Speaker 8: these these managers and owners of NFL teams have invested
- 53:34Speaker 8: in these you know in the league. They will not
- 53:37Speaker 8: let that go easily or quietly.
- 53:39Speaker 4: But but do you think they would have the capacity
- 53:42Speaker 4: to think ahead or do you think they're sitting back
- 53:44Speaker 4: on their loyer saying, while we're king, we don't have
- 53:46Speaker 4: to worry about it, or you think they're saying like, okay,
- 53:49Speaker 4: let's just figure out how this doesn't happen.
- 53:52Speaker 6: Because I'm telling you, when.
- 53:53Speaker 4: You got round, if you got Randy Moss playing riverside
- 53:56Speaker 4: soccer and he's scoring ten goals a game, somebody, I'm
- 54:01Speaker 4: I'm going to check it.
- 54:02Speaker 8: Out, kind of like Messa, right, yeah, ran mocing that.
- 54:05Speaker 4: Yeah, let's go check out the soccer guy. Or even
- 54:09Speaker 4: if it's not a Randy Moss, it's somebody else. And
- 54:11Speaker 4: you you you kind of are interested in soccer. I
- 54:13Speaker 4: don't know if there's a star there and that you're
- 54:16Speaker 4: gonna go see that once you see it?
- 54:19Speaker 6: Now, what are you doing? You going back?
- 54:21Speaker 8: Do you think it's going to be in my lifetime?
- 54:23Speaker 8: Put it that way? I think I think it's a
- 54:24Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 54:25Speaker 4: I don't.
- 54:26Speaker 8: I don't imagine that. I don't. I mean, as popular
- 54:29Speaker 8: as the NFL is in collegiate football, spending those saturdays,
- 54:32Speaker 8: people love Saturday, you know, fall Saturdays, going to the
- 54:36Speaker 8: traditional college games and watching them on TV. I agree
- 54:40Speaker 8: that's gonna be hard to overcome.
- 54:42Speaker 4: But do you think you would have saw w v
- 54:44Speaker 4: U Marshall? You see State all men and women soccer
- 54:50Speaker 4: all competing nationally.
- 54:52Speaker 8: I mean that was awesome.
- 54:53Speaker 6: Yeah, So I'm just saying we wouldn't have thought that. Yeah, right,
- 54:58Speaker 6: So I don't know. I think it's coming.
- 55:00Speaker 8: Time will tell, right, You just you're just mad because
- 55:02Speaker 8: I'm not speaking French anymore French accent. I'm gonna work
- 55:07Speaker 8: on that.
- 55:07Speaker 6: Yeah, please do that.
- 55:09Speaker 4: Okay, all right, ladies and gentlemen, we are out of
- 55:14Speaker 4: here and we'll see you again next week.
