- 0:00Ezekiel chapter 41. OK, for this one, I am going to
- 0:05switch to use the suggestion that Amir suggested in his book
- 0:10Exploring Ezekiel, and that recommendation was to use the
- 0:16New Living Translation so that these cubit measurements are
- 0:21spoken in terms that I can understand from the United
- 0:25States perspective about using feet rather than qubits to
- 0:30understand the sizes of these things.
- 0:32So I am going to an online Bible, blueletterbible.org, and
- 0:37I'm reading from Ezekiel 41 in the New Living Translation,
- 0:43which is the NLT version. So I will get started in there
- 0:47and then I'll go back to the questions and answers in the
- 0:49study guide. So Ezekiel 41, verse one.
- 0:53After that, the man brought me into the sanctuary of the
- 0:57temple. He measured the walls on either
- 0:59side of its doorway, and they were 10 1/2 feet thick.
- 1:06The doorway was 17 1/2 feet wide, and the walls on each side
- 1:13of it were 8 3/4 feet long. The sanctuary itself was 70 feet
- 1:20long and 35 feet wide. Then he went beyond the
- 1:25sanctuary and into the inner room.
- 1:28He measured the walls on either side of its entrance, and they
- 1:32were 3 1/2 feet thick. The entrance was 10 1/2 feet
- 1:38wide, and the walls on each side of the entrance were 12 and A
- 1:44and a quarter feet long. The inner room of the sanctuary
- 1:48was 35 feet long and 35 feet wide.
- 1:53This, he told me, was or is the most holy place.
- 1:57I think that's important too, to know where it's the inner room
- 2:00of the sanctuary. And right now we're Ezekiel's
- 2:04getting a revelation from whomever showing him this, that
- 2:09this inner room of the sanctuary is the most holy place.
- 2:15And I think that's important for us to just know where that is
- 2:18the most holy place. It's the inner sanctuary, and
- 2:22it's a square shape. It's 35 feet long and 35 feet
- 2:26wide, and that's verse 4. I want to look at that.
- 2:30It was 2020 cubits is what it is in the cubit version.
- 2:38It's a 20 cubit by 20 cubit, which equals 35 feet by 35 feet.
- 2:44Then he measured the wall of the temple and it was 10 1/2 feet
- 2:49thick. There was a row of rooms along
- 2:54the outside wall. Each room was 7 feet wide.
- 2:59These side rooms were built in three levels, one above the
- 3:03other, with 30 rooms on each level.
- 3:07The supports for these side rooms rested on exterior ledges
- 3:11on the temple wall. They did not extend into the
- 3:14wall. Each level was wider than the
- 3:18one below it, corresponding to the narrowing of the temple wall
- 3:22as it rose higher. A stairway LED up from the
- 3:28bottom level through the middle level to the top level.
- 3:32I saw that the temple was built on a terrace that's interesting,
- 3:37which provided a foundation for the side rooms.
- 3:41The terrace was 10 1/2 feet high.
- 3:44The outer wall of the temple's side rooms was 8 3/4 feet thick.
- 3:51This left an open area between the side rooms and the row of
- 3:56the rooms along the outer wall of the inner courtyard.
- 4:01This open area was 35 feet wide and it went all the way around
- 4:08the temple. The two are two doors opened
- 4:12from the side rooms into the terrace yard which was 8 3/4
- 4:17feet wide. One door faced north and the
- 4:21other SA large building stood on the West facing the temple
- 4:27courtyard. It was 122 1/2 feet wide and 157
- 4:341/2 feet long, and its walls were 8 3/4 thick.
- 4:41These are extremely thick walls. I mean, this is really very
- 4:44interesting. Then the man measured the
- 4:47temple, and it was 175 feet long.
- 4:52The courtyard around the building, including its walls,
- 4:55was an additional 175 feet and length.
- 4:59The inner courtyard to the east of the temple was also 175 feet
- 5:06wide. The building to the West,
- 5:08including its walls, was also 175 feet wide.
- 5:14The sanctuary, the inner room, and the entry room of the temple
- 5:18were all paneled with wood, as were the frames of the recessed
- 5:23windows. The inner walls of the temple
- 5:25were paneled with wood above and below the windows.
- 5:30The space above the door leading into the inner room and its
- 5:34walls inside and outside were also paneled.
- 5:39All the walls were decorated with carvings of cherubim, each
- 5:43with two faces, and there was a carving of a palm tree between
- 5:48each of the cherubim. On one face, that of a man
- 5:53looked toward the palm tree on one side.
- 5:57The other face, that of a young lion, looked toward the palm
- 6:01tree on the other side. The figures were carved all
- 6:05along inside the temple. Now this is interesting.
- 6:08It's just a side thought, but as we know the I guess from another
- 6:15version, it talks about like the the face of a cherub.
- 6:19And we know that the cherubim that Ezekiel saw earlier, they
- 6:21had four faces originally. The study Bible is going to talk
- 6:25a little bit about that. But the four faces, sometimes it
- 6:29says cherub is 1 face, human is another, lion is another and
- 6:35eagle is another. So four different faces.
- 6:38And I do think the way God is, there is some symbology in there
- 6:44and I don't quite understand. And I was going to address it.
- 6:47I think I, I think I might understand, but I prayed about
- 6:50it and God did not give me the go ahead.
- 6:52So I'm not going to talk about my speculation on that.
- 6:56But I will mention that the two faces that are showing up in
- 7:01this temple are the lion and the man.
- 7:04And it just made me think about Jesus, that Jesus became, you
- 7:08know, came as a human, but also symbolically he is the lion of
- 7:14God. And it's, you know, here it says
- 7:16the young lion, the young lion and the man.
- 7:18So everything does point to Jesus.
- 7:21And I think that could be, that's my own thought, but it
- 7:26maybe it is symbolic. Anyway, let's get back to verse
- 7:3120. From the floor to the walls to
- 7:34the top of the walls, including the outer wall of the sanctuary.
- 7:38There were square columns at the entrance to the sanctuary, and
- 7:42the ones at the entrance of the most Holy Place were similar.
- 7:46There was an altar made of wood 5 1/2 feet high and 3 1/2 feet
- 7:52across. Its corners, base, and sides
- 7:55were all made of wood. This, the man told me, is the
- 7:58table that stands in the Lord's presence.
- 8:03Both the Sanctuary and the Most Holy Place had double doorways,
- 8:08each with two swinging doors. The doors leading into the
- 8:13sanctuary were decorated with carved cherubim and palm trees,
- 8:17just as on the walls, and there was a wooden roof at the front
- 8:22of the entry room to the temple. On both sides of the entry room
- 8:26were recessed windows decorated with carved palm trees.
- 8:30The side rooms along the outside wall also had roofs.
- 8:37Then Chapter 42. Then the man led me out of the
- 8:41temple court, out of the temple courtyard by way of the north
- 8:45gateway. We entered the outer courtyard
- 8:48and came to a group of rooms against the N wall of the inner
- 8:52courtyard. The structure, whose entrance
- 8:55open toward the north, was 175 feet long and 87 1/2 feet wide.
- 9:02One block of rooms overlooked the 35 foot width of the inner
- 9:08courtyard. Another block of rooms looked
- 9:11out onto the pavement of the outer courtyard.
- 9:15The two blocks were built 3 levels high and stood across
- 9:19from each other. Between the two blocks of the
- 9:23room ran a walkway 17 1/2 feet wide.
- 9:27It extended the entire 175 feet of the complex and all the doors
- 9:33faced N. Each of the two upper levels of
- 9:37the rooms was narrower than the one beneath it because the upper
- 9:42levels had to allow space for walkways in front of them.
- 9:47Since there were three levels and they did not have supporting
- 9:50columns as is in the courtyards, each of the upper levels was set
- 9:55back from the level beneath it. There was an outer wall that
- 10:00separated the rooms from the outer courtyard.
- 10:03It was 87 1/2 feet long. The wall added length to the
- 10:08outer block of rooms, which extended for only 87 1/2 feet,
- 10:14while the inner block, the rooms toward the temple, extended for
- 10:18175 feet. There was an eastern entrance
- 10:22from the outer courtyard to these rooms on the South side of
- 10:27the temple. There were two blocks of rooms
- 10:29just outside the inner courtyard between the temple and the outer
- 10:32courtyard. These rooms were arranged just
- 10:36like the rooms on the north. There was a walkway between the
- 10:39two blocks of rooms, just like the complex on the north side of
- 10:43the temple. This complex of rooms was the
- 10:45same size and length as the other one, and it had the same
- 10:49entrances and doors. The dimensions of each were
- 10:52identical, so there was an entrance in the wall facing the
- 10:56doors of the inner block of rooms, and another on the east
- 11:00at the end of the interior walkway.
- 11:03Then the man said to me, These rooms that overlook the temple
- 11:06from the North and South are holy.
- 11:10Here, the priest who offer sacrifices to the Lord will eat
- 11:14the most holy offerings, and because these rooms are holy,
- 11:19they will be used to store the sacred offerings, the grain
- 11:23offerings, sin offerings, and guilt offerings.
- 11:28When the priests leave the sanctuary, they must not go
- 11:31directly to the outer courtyard. They must first take off the
- 11:35clothes they were they wore while ministering.
- 11:38Because these clothes are holy, they must put on other clothes
- 11:43before entering the parts of the building complex open to the
- 11:46public. When the man had finished
- 11:49measuring the inside of the temple area, he led me out
- 11:55through the east gateway to measure the entire perimeter.
- 11:58He measured it, measured the east side with his measuring
- 12:02rod. It was 875 feet long.
- 12:07Then he measured the north side and it was 8, also 875 feet.
- 12:13The South side was also 875 feet and the West side was also 875
- 12:22feet. So the area was 875 feet on each
- 12:26side with a wall all around it to separate what was wholly from
- 12:33what was common. And that concludes to chap the
- 12:38the structure. And that's chapters 41 and 42.
- 12:44So I will read through the questions and answers from the
- 12:47study Bible for those two chapters, which there really
- 12:49isn't a lot, but let's see. The first one is why were the
- 12:57windows covered? So in verse 16 in the NIV
- 13:02version, it says I'll read the full sentence though the main
- 13:07hall, the inner sanctuary in the portico facing the court, as
- 13:10well as the thresholds and the narrow windows and galleries
- 13:14around three of them. Everything beyond and including
- 13:18the threshold was covered with wood.
- 13:21Well, I don't know if the narrow windows were actually covered
- 13:26with wood. That's probably an
- 13:27interpretation, but it could be wood framed the way the NLT
- 13:31states it. But anyway, this is what it says
- 13:35here. Who knows?
- 13:36I mean, and it's not really probably that important, it'll
- 13:40be whatever it will be, but it says why were the windows
- 13:43covered? And the study Bible says to shut
- 13:46the world out of the sacred space where the where God's
- 13:49glory resided. The interior walls of the most
- 13:52holy place were lined from floor to ceiling, floor to ceiling
- 13:55with wood, which also provided a sweet aroma to balance the smell
- 13:59of the sacrifices. Solomon's temple was also built
- 14:03this way according to First Kings chapter 6 verse 15.
- 14:09Then it says what are cherubim? The word is the plural of
- 14:14cherub, which is a specific type of Angel.
- 14:17The cherubim carved on the walls of the temple had two faces, a
- 14:22human beings and a lions. These cherubim may have been
- 14:26different from the cherubim with the four faces from chapter 10
- 14:31simply because the carving showed only A1 sided view.
- 14:36Well, that's the study Bibles thought about it.
- 14:40But I was thinking, you know, maybe it's because Jesus came as
- 14:45a human, but he's also the lion of God.
- 14:48So the lion from the tribe of Judah.
- 14:51Just a thought. OK.
- 14:52Why did the priest eat the offerings?
- 14:54A priest stood before God on behalf of the people, but he
- 14:58also was God's representative to the people standing in for God.
- 15:02The priest ate from the offerings brought by the people.
- 15:06Did the priests and their families live in the temple?
- 15:08Certain priests may have resided in the temple for the sake of
- 15:11performing necessary duties, and that's referencing Eli and
- 15:16Samuel. However, it was probably not
- 15:18common for a priest and his family to live in the temple.
- 15:21Well, it also says that in this NLT version that they had
- 15:25separate places where the priests lived, administered to
- 15:30the temple. So then it also there's a
- 15:33question in the study Bible that says what were the differences
- 15:35between the various offerings grain, sin and guilt.
- 15:39There were two kinds of offerings, blood and blood.
- 15:42Less blood offerings were necessary for serious offenses.
- 15:46The blood covered the sins and washed them away, just as
- 15:51Jesus's sacrifice and death on the cross cleanses us.
- 15:55Blood offerings included the sin offering an animal sacrifice for
- 16:00sins of Commission or omission for ceremonial impurity.
- 16:07Without this offering, a Sinner could not worship in the temple.
- 16:12The guilt offering, another animal sacrifice, enabled
- 16:16restoration for a legal infraction which required
- 16:21restitution or some other form of satisfaction.
- 16:25The burnt offering was an animal sacrifice in which the entire
- 16:29animal was consumed and by which the worshipper was cleansed from
- 16:34all sin. Bloodless offerings affirmed or
- 16:39restored fellowship with God and included the grain offering and
- 16:44the drink offering. A grain offering in a grain
- 16:48offering unleavened bread made of fine flour and salt, olive
- 16:54oil, if a confession of sin was involved, was burned as a
- 16:58fragrant offering to the Lord. The drink offering, which also
- 17:02affirmed fellowship, was more of a free will rather than a
- 17:07required offering. It's really kind of interesting
- 17:10because it's like the bread and the drink.
- 17:12And just like Jesus at the Last Supper had the bread and the
- 17:16wine and it just, you know, all of it was pointing to Jesus, the
- 17:23things that were happening that people just maybe didn't always
- 17:27see. So there's one more question and
- 17:29answer for chapter 42. What was holy and what was
- 17:33common? The temple and everything within
- 17:35it was reserved for God alone. Those things dedicated for use
- 17:40in honoring God were holy and only by designated priests.
- 17:44Common things, on the other hand, could be used in everyday
- 17:47life by anyone. Wall that distinguished the
- 17:50boundary between the two categories was important so that
- 17:54the people would meet maintain respect for God's holiness.
- 17:59So that concludes the description of the future temple
- 18:04and we will stop here and our next podcast will be about God's
- 18:09glory returning to the temple.
