- 0:19Speaker 1: a birthday and gets two presents or the old gray
- 0:25Speaker 1: Donkey stood by the side of the stream and looked
- 0:29Speaker 1: at himself in the water.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Pathetic, he said, that's what it is. Pathetic.
- 0:37Speaker 1: He turned and walked slowly down the stream for twenty yards,
- 0:41Speaker 1: splashed across it, and walked slowly back on the other side.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Then he looked at himself in the water again.
- 0:50Speaker 2: As I thought, He said, no better from this side.
- 0:54Speaker 2: But nobody minds, nobody cares. Pathetic, that's what it is.
- 1:01Speaker 1: There was a crackling noise in the bracken behind him,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and out came Pooh, good morning, you are, said Pooh,
- 1:11Speaker 1: good morning. Poo Bear, said yor gloomily if it is
- 1:16Speaker 1: a good morning he said, which I doubt, said he.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Why, what's the matter.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Nothing, poo bear? Nothing. We can't all, and some of
- 1:29Speaker 2: us don't. That's all there is to it.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Can't all, what said Pooh, rubbing his nose gayety song
- 1:39Speaker 1: and dance.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Here we go round the mulberry.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Bush, oh, said Pooh. He thought for a long time,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and then asked.
- 1:49Speaker 3: What mulberry bush is that?
- 1:51Speaker 1: Bon Hommie went on yoor gloomily.
- 1:55Speaker 2: French word meaning bonhamie. He explained, I'm not complaining, but
- 2:01Speaker 2: there it is.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Pooh sat down on a large stone and tried to
- 2:07Speaker 1: think this out. It sounded to him like a riddle,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and he was never much good at riddles, being a
- 2:13Speaker 1: bear of very little brain, so he sang Coddleston pie instead.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Coddleston, Coddleston, Coddleston pie. A fly can't bird, but a
- 2:26Speaker 3: bird can fly. Ask me a riddle, an I reply, Coddleston, Coddleston,
- 2:33Speaker 3: Coddleston Pie.
- 2:35Speaker 1: That was the first verse. When he had finished it,
- 2:39Speaker 1: ere didn't actually say that he didn't like it, so
- 2:43Speaker 1: Pooh very kindly sang the second verse to him.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Coddleston, Coddleston, Coddleston pie. A fish can't whistle, and neither can.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I Ask me a riddle, and I reply Coddleston, Coddleston,
- 2:58Speaker 3: Coddleston pie.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Or still said nothing at all, so Pooh hummed the
- 3:04Speaker 1: third verse quietly to himself.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Conalston, Conaston, Conalston pie. Why does a chicken? I don't know? Why?
- 3:16Speaker 3: Ask me a riddle, and I reply Conalston, Conalston, Conalston pie.
- 3:24Speaker 2: That's right, said Eyre, sing empty tiddy empty too. Here
- 3:30Speaker 2: we go gathering nuts and may enjoy yourself.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I am, said Pooh. Some can, said Eyre.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Why what's the matter?
- 3:43Speaker 2: Is anything the matter?
- 3:46Speaker 3: You seem so sad? Ere sad?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Why should I be sad? It's my birthday, the happiest
- 3:54Speaker 2: day of the year.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Your birthday, said Pooh in great surprise.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Of course it is. Can't you see? Look at all
- 4:04Speaker 2: the presents I have had?
- 4:06Speaker 1: He waved a foot from side to side.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Look at the birthday cake, candles and pink sugar.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Poo looked first to the right and then to the left.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Presence, said Pooh.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Birthday cake, said Pooh.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Where can't you see them?
- 4:31Speaker 1: No, said Pooh? Neither can, I said, ere joke, he explained,
- 4:40Speaker 1: haw ha Boo scratched his head, being a little puzzled
- 4:45Speaker 1: by all this.
- 4:47Speaker 3: But is it really your birthday?
- 4:50Speaker 1: He asked?
- 4:52Speaker 2: It is?
- 4:53Speaker 3: Oh, well, many happy returns of the day, ere.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And many returns to you Pooh.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Bear, but it isn't my birthday. No, it's mine, but
- 5:09Speaker 3: you said many happy returns.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Well why not? You don't always want to be miserable
- 5:16Speaker 2: on my birthday, do you?
- 5:18Speaker 3: Oh?
- 5:20Speaker 1: I see, said Pooh. It's bad enough, said or almost
- 5:26Speaker 1: breaking down.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Being miserable myself, what with no presence and no cake
- 5:33Speaker 2: and no candles and no proper notice taken of me
- 5:37Speaker 2: at all. But if everybody else is going to be
- 5:40Speaker 2: miserable too.
- 5:41Speaker 1: This was too much for Pooh. Stay there, he called
- 5:46Speaker 1: to Eore as he turned and hurried back home as
- 5:49Speaker 1: quick as he could, for he felt that he must
- 5:51Speaker 1: get poor Eore a present of some sort at once,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and he could always think of a proper one. Afterwards.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Outside his house, he found Piglet jumping up and down
- 6:04Speaker 1: trying to reach the knocker. Hullo, Piglet, he said, Hallo, pill,
- 6:11Speaker 1: said Piglet.
- 6:13Speaker 3: What are you trying to do?
- 6:16Speaker 1: I was just trying to reach the knocker, said Piglet.
- 6:19Speaker 4: I just came round.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Let me do it for you, said Pooh kindly. So
- 6:25Speaker 1: he reached up and knocked at the door.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I have just seen Eore, he began, And poor Ewore
- 6:34Speaker 3: is in a very sad condition because it's his birthday
- 6:39Speaker 3: and nobody has taken any notice of it. And he's
- 6:42Speaker 3: very gloomy, know what Eore is? And there he was,
- 6:47Speaker 3: and and what a long time? Whoever lives here is
- 6:51Speaker 3: answering this door, And.
- 6:53Speaker 1: He knocked again, But Poo said Piglet, it's your own house, Oh,
- 7:01Speaker 1: said Pooh.
- 7:02Speaker 3: So it is. He said, well, let's go in, so
- 7:09Speaker 3: in they went.
- 7:10Speaker 1: The first thing Pooh did was to go to the
- 7:13Speaker 1: cupboard to see if he had quite a small jar
- 7:15Speaker 1: of honey left, and he had, so he took it down.
- 7:20Speaker 3: I'm giving this to Eore, he explained, as a present.
- 7:26Speaker 3: What are you going to give?
- 7:28Speaker 4: Couldn't I give it too, said Piglet, and both of
- 7:33Speaker 4: us No, said Pooh.
- 7:36Speaker 3: That would not be a good plan.
- 7:39Speaker 4: All right, then I'll give him a balloon. I've got
- 7:42Speaker 4: one left from the party. I'll go and get it now,
- 7:46Speaker 4: shall I?
- 7:47Speaker 3: That Piglet is a very good idea. It is just
- 7:52Speaker 3: what ere wants to cheer him up. Nobody can be
- 7:57Speaker 3: uncheered with a balloon.
- 8:00Speaker 1: So off Piglet trotted, and in the other direction went
- 8:04Speaker 1: Pooh with his jar of honey. It was a warm
- 8:08Speaker 1: day and he had a long way to go. He
- 8:12Speaker 1: hadn't gone more than halfway when a sort of funny
- 8:15Speaker 1: feeling began to creep all over him. It began at
- 8:19Speaker 1: the tip of his nose and trickled all through him
- 8:23Speaker 1: and out at the soles of his feet. It was
- 8:26Speaker 1: just as if somebody inside him were saying, now, then.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Pooh, time for a little something.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Dear, dear, said pooh. I didn't know it was as
- 8:40Speaker 3: late as that.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So he sat down and took the top off his
- 8:44Speaker 1: jar of honey.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Lucky, I brought this with me, he thought. Many a
- 8:51Speaker 3: bear going out on a warm day like this would
- 8:54Speaker 3: never have thought of bringing a little something with him.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And he began to eat. Eat. Now, let me see,
- 9:03Speaker 1: he thought, as he took his last lick of the
- 9:06Speaker 1: inside of the jar.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Where is I going? Ah? Yes, Eyore.
- 9:12Speaker 1: He got up slowly, and then suddenly he remembered he
- 9:18Speaker 1: had eaten Eore's birthday present. Bother said, pooh.
- 9:24Speaker 3: What shall I do? I must give him something.
- 9:30Speaker 1: For a little while, he couldn't think of anything.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Then he thought, well, it's a very nice pot, even
- 9:39Speaker 3: if there's no honey in it, And if I washed
- 9:42Speaker 3: it clean and got somebody to write a happy birthday
- 9:47Speaker 3: on it, or could keep things in it which might
- 9:51Speaker 3: be useful.
- 9:53Speaker 1: So, as he was just passing the hundred acre wood,
- 9:56Speaker 1: he went inside to call on Owl.
- 9:59Speaker 3: Who lived the Good morning Owl.
- 10:03Speaker 1: He said, Good morning, Pooh.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Said Owl, Many happy returns on your's birthday.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Said Pooh.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Oh, is that what it is?
- 10:15Speaker 3: What are you giving him? Owl? What are you giving him? Pooh?
- 10:20Speaker 3: I'm giving him a useful pot to keep things in?
- 10:24Speaker 3: And I wanted to ask you.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Is this it, said Owl, taking it out of Pooh's paw.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Yes, And I wanted to ask.
- 10:33Speaker 5: You somebody husband keeping honey in it?
- 10:36Speaker 3: Said Owl? You can keep anything in.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It, said Pooh, earnestly.
- 10:42Speaker 3: It's very useful like that. And I wanted to ask you.
- 10:46Speaker 1: You ought to write a happy birthday on it?
- 10:51Speaker 3: That was what I wanted to ask you, said Pooh,
- 10:56Speaker 3: Because my spelling is wopply. It's good spelling, but it
- 11:01Speaker 3: wobbles and the letters get in the wrong places. Would
- 11:07Speaker 3: you write a happy birthday on it? For me?
- 11:11Speaker 1: It's a nice pot, said Owl, looking at it all round.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Couldn't I give it two from both of us?
- 11:19Speaker 3: No, said Pooh, that would not be a good plan. Now,
- 11:25Speaker 3: I'll just wash it first and then you can write
- 11:28Speaker 3: on it.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Well, he washed the pot out and dried it, while
- 11:32Speaker 1: Owl licked the end of his pencil and wondered how
- 11:36Speaker 1: to spell birthday? Can you read, Pooh?
- 11:40Speaker 5: He asked a little anxiously. There's a notice about knocking
- 11:45Speaker 5: and ringing outside my door, which Christopher Robin wrote. Could
- 11:49Speaker 5: you read it?
- 11:50Speaker 3: Christopher Robin told me what it said, and then I could.
- 11:55Speaker 5: Well, I'll tell you what this says and then you'll
- 11:59Speaker 5: be able to.
- 12:00Speaker 1: So Awl wrote, and this is what he wrote, Hippy
- 12:05Speaker 1: pipy batha the d d thazou buth thee. Pooh looked
- 12:11Speaker 1: on admiringly. I'm just saying a happy birthday, said Owl carelessly.
- 12:18Speaker 3: It's a nice long one.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Said Pooh, very much impressed by it.
- 12:24Speaker 5: Well, actually, of course I'm saying a very happy birthday
- 12:29Speaker 5: with love from Pooh. Naturally, it takes a good deal
- 12:33Speaker 5: of pencil to say a long.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Thing like that. Uh I see, said Pooh.
- 12:40Speaker 1: While all this was happening, Piglet had gone back to
- 12:43Speaker 1: his own house to get Eore's balloon. He held it
- 12:47Speaker 1: very tightly against himself so that it shouldn't blow away,
- 12:51Speaker 1: and he ran as fast as he could so as
- 12:54Speaker 1: to get to Eore before Pooh did, for he thought
- 12:58Speaker 1: that he would like to be the first one to
- 13:00Speaker 1: give a present, just as if he had thought of
- 13:02Speaker 1: it without being told by anybody. And running along and
- 13:07Speaker 1: thinking how pleased Eore would be, he didn't look where
- 13:11Speaker 1: he was going, and suddenly he put his foot in
- 13:14Speaker 1: a rabbit hole and fell down flat on his face. Bang.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Piglet lay there wondering what had happened. At first he
- 13:25Speaker 1: thought that the whole world had blown up, and then
- 13:28Speaker 1: he thought that perhaps only the forest part of it
- 13:32Speaker 1: had and then he thought that perhaps only he had
- 13:36Speaker 1: and he was now alone in the moon or somewhere
- 13:39Speaker 1: and would never see Christopher, Robin or Pooh or Eore again.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And then he thought, well, even if I'm in the moon,
- 13:49Speaker 1: I needn't be face downwards all the time. So he
- 13:54Speaker 1: got cautiously up and looked about him. He was still
- 13:58Speaker 1: in the forest. Well, that's funny, he thought.
- 14:04Speaker 4: I wonder what that bang was. I couldn't have made
- 14:08Speaker 4: much noise just falling down, And where's my balloon? And
- 14:13Speaker 4: what's that small piece of damp rag doing it?
- 14:17Speaker 1: Was the balloon. Oh dear, said Piglet.
- 14:22Speaker 6: Oh dear, oh, dearie, dearie dear. Well, it's too late now.
- 14:27Speaker 6: I can't go back, and I haven't another balloon, and
- 14:31Speaker 6: perhaps Eore doesn't like balloons so very much.
- 14:35Speaker 1: So he trotted on rather sadly now and down. He
- 14:39Speaker 1: came to the side of the stream where Eore was
- 14:43Speaker 1: and called out to him. Good morning, here, shouted Piglet.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Good morning, little Piglet, said Eore. If it is a
- 14:53Speaker 2: good morning.
- 14:54Speaker 1: He said, which I doubt, said he not, that it matters,
- 15:00Speaker 1: he said, Many happy returns of the day, said Piglet.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Having now got closer, Ere stopped looking at himself in
- 15:10Speaker 1: the stream and turned to stare at Piglet. Just say
- 15:14Speaker 1: that again, he said, many a hap.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Wait a moment.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Balancing on three legs, he began to bring his fourth
- 15:23Speaker 1: leg very cautiously up to his ear. I did this yesterday,
- 15:29Speaker 1: he explained, as he fell down for the third time.
- 15:34Speaker 2: It's quite easy. It's so as I can hear better. There.
- 15:39Speaker 2: That's done it now, then, what were you saying?
- 15:43Speaker 1: He pushed his ear forward with his.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Hoof Many happy returns of the day.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Said Piglet again, meaning me of course youre my birthday, Yes,
- 15:58Speaker 1: me having a real birthday day.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Yes, yo, And I've brought you a present.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yor took down his right hoof from his right ear,
- 16:07Speaker 1: turned around, and with great difficulty put up his lift hoof.
- 16:14Speaker 2: I must have that in the other ear.
- 16:16Speaker 1: He said. Now then at present, said Piglet, very loudly.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Meaning me again, yes my birthday. Still of course here
- 16:32Speaker 2: me going on having a real birthday.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Yes, yo, And I brought you a balloon.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Balloon, said Eore.
- 16:42Speaker 2: You did say balloon, one of those big colored things
- 16:45Speaker 2: you blow up, gayety song and dance. Here we are
- 16:50Speaker 2: and there we are.
- 16:53Speaker 4: Yes, but I'm afraid I'm very sorry. Or but when
- 16:57Speaker 4: I was running along bring it to you, I I
- 17:00Speaker 4: fell down.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Dear, dear, how unlucky you ran too fast. I expect
- 17:07Speaker 2: you didn't hurt yourself.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Little Piglet, No what I I?
- 17:13Speaker 4: Oh? EO, I busted balloon.
- 17:16Speaker 1: There was a very long silence. My balloon, said Eore.
- 17:22Speaker 1: At last Piglet nodded.
- 17:26Speaker 2: My birthday balloon, Yes, eo.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Said Piglet, sniffing a little.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Here it is with any happy returns of the day,
- 17:37Speaker 4: And he.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Gave Eore the small piece of damp rag. Is this it,
- 17:43Speaker 1: said Eore, a little surprised. Piglet nodded my present. Piglet
- 17:49Speaker 1: nodded again the balloon. Yes, thank you, Piglet, said Eyore.
- 17:58Speaker 2: You don't mind my asking. He went on, But what
- 18:03Speaker 2: color was this balloon? When it When it was a balloon?
- 18:07Speaker 6: Read?
- 18:08Speaker 1: I just wondered red, he murmured to himself.
- 18:14Speaker 2: My favorite color. How big was it?
- 18:18Speaker 4: Actice things?
- 18:19Speaker 7: Me?
- 18:20Speaker 2: I just wandered about as big as.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Piglet, he said to himself, sadly.
- 18:27Speaker 2: My favorite size.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Well, well, Piglet felt very miserable and didn't know what
- 18:35Speaker 1: to say. He was still opening his mouth to begin something,
- 18:40Speaker 1: and then deciding that it wasn't any good saying that
- 18:44Speaker 1: when he heard a shout from the other side of
- 18:46Speaker 1: the river, and there was.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Pooh, many happy returns of the day.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Called out Pooh, forgetting that he had said it already.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Thank you, Pooh. I'm having them.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Said Eyore gloomily.
- 19:03Speaker 3: I've brought you a little present.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Said Pooh excitedly. I've had it, said Eyore. Pooh had
- 19:12Speaker 1: now splashed across the stream to Eyore, and Piglet was
- 19:16Speaker 1: sitting a little way off his head in his paws,
- 19:19Speaker 1: snuffling to himself. It's a useful pot, said Pooh.
- 19:26Speaker 3: Here it is, and it's got a very happy birthday
- 19:29Speaker 3: with love from Pooh written on it. That's what all
- 19:33Speaker 3: that writing is. And it's for putting things in there.
- 19:38Speaker 1: When Eyore saw the pot, he became quite excited.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Why, he said, I believe my balloon will just go
- 19:47Speaker 2: into that pot.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Oh No, Eyore said Pooh.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Balloons are much too big to go in pots. What
- 19:56Speaker 3: you do with the balloon is you hold the.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Balloon, not ma, said eyoorre proudly look Piglet, and as
- 20:05Speaker 1: Piglet looked sorrowfully, round Or picked the balloon up with
- 20:09Speaker 1: his teeth and placed it carefully in the pot, picked
- 20:14Speaker 1: it out and put it on the ground, and then
- 20:17Speaker 1: picked it up again and put it carefully back. So
- 20:22Speaker 1: it does, said Pooh. It goes in, So it does,
- 20:28Speaker 1: said Piglet. And it comes out, doesn't it, said Eyor.
- 20:34Speaker 2: It goes in and out like anything.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I'm very glad, said Pooh happily that I.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Thought of giving you a useful pot to put things in.
- 20:46Speaker 1: I'm very glad, said Piglet happily.
- 20:49Speaker 4: That I thought of giving you something to put in
- 20:52Speaker 4: a useful pot.
- 20:54Speaker 1: But Eore wasn't listening. He was taking the balloon out
- 20:59Speaker 1: and putting it back back again, as happy as could be.
- 21:04Speaker 7: And didn't I give him anything.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Asked Christopher Robin, sadly. Of course you did, I said,
- 21:12Speaker 1: you gave him, don't you remember? A little? A little?
- 21:18Speaker 7: I gave him a box of paints to paint things with.
- 21:22Speaker 1: That was it.
- 21:24Speaker 7: Why didn't I give it to him in the morning?
- 21:27Speaker 1: You were so busy getting his party ready for him.
- 21:30Speaker 1: He had a cake with icing on the top, and
- 21:33Speaker 1: three candles and his name in pink sugar. And yes,
- 21:38Speaker 1: I remember, said Christopher Robin end of Chapter six,
