- 0:43Knife. The Doctor Who commentary
- 0:46podcast. I didn't realize this episode
- 0:49was being started by a Dalek. That's not a Dalek, it is.
- 0:54I James breathe fancy, which was 10 funky facts about James Bree.
- 1:09Wish I could remember the key fact.
- 1:11Yeah, I can't remember why they were funky facts.
- 1:12It's probably because it was the 90s, but I remember me and my
- 1:17friend, Richard, absolutely howling at that because we loved
- 1:20James breed but I can't remember what they were or remember.
- 1:23One was the time every episode of the ball games was under
- 1:29running massively. So deaf people only asked James
- 1:32brings if you don't mind stretching and stretching Every
- 1:39single word. He said what a stupid fool you
- 1:46are. You never forget him, do you?
- 1:52You never do. Although, you know, it's so
- 1:54funny. When Mark, did it for two or
- 1:56two? Yeah, yes, Sarah absolutely fell
- 1:58about of that folders and Mark hated it.
- 2:02Oh, very straight states. That it comes to those who, you
- 2:04know? Well, I'm learning this.
- 2:05I mean, anyone who doesn't like the grown Williams era I Beast.
- 2:09Sorry Mom, it's not good in bed, though.
- 2:15I wouldn't know. Oh shit, heart.
- 2:17No, I'm not. No.
- 2:20Would you care to step in to episode 4 of or part for sorry,
- 2:24or full circle before. I do this, I have a question for
- 2:28you from. Who from freezer, who L Fraser,
- 2:33who else would ask us? Lots of questions.
- 2:35Others will be along when they vented do.
- 2:41He said this is some of the questions.
- 2:44He's also we've answered already but this is a really interesting
- 2:48one. Why do you think this story
- 2:50isn't held in higher regard? I think that's a really good
- 2:54point. Yes, because of this season
- 2:58offering, this would fall sort of mid to bottom of the pack,
- 3:03because the season is so strong. I feel so.
- 3:05So many memorable stories in it. You mean what I said at the
- 3:10beginning of this commentary. This story is very competent.
- 3:14Yes. Absolutely told very competently
- 3:16directed. Acted the works.
- 3:20Competent is not classic, is it? No, it's not outstanding.
- 3:26Although there are some outstanding moments overall,
- 3:30it's not Yeah, I think it's because it's it doesn't have a
- 3:35massive super villain. Like I don't Genesis of the
- 3:37Daleks knows. It doesn't have a, have a
- 3:40standout villain or a scary monster like seeds of do you
- 3:45know? Like it's all very good?
- 3:48Yes. But very good.
- 3:49Does it get noticed? See I wouldn't like if I was
- 3:52doing my top 100 and whatever is now 250 dog pose?
- 3:57This would probably hit somewhere in the middle.
- 4:00Okay. I think middle too.
- 4:02You just all edging towards the top half but probably somewhere
- 4:06around 100, you know, interesting isn't it?
- 4:10Because I always rate this season extra highly because I
- 4:16don't think he gets enough love. And I love genuinely, love all
- 4:20stories this year. And but if I was to put them in
- 4:25order which I don't think I could do because I love them all
- 4:29but for different reasons I don't know.
- 4:32Where any of this would come, I this would be in the top half of
- 4:37Doctor Who for me definitely and probably quite top top half but
- 4:45I do wonder whether that's a lot of nostalgia which is very
- 4:50difficult to get away from with Doctor Who because it's been
- 4:53such a big part of my life but actually is, One of the most.
- 4:59Averagely average stories there is.
- 5:04I don't know if it's just to well my needs to be.
- 5:11Yeah. But I know what you're saying.
- 5:12Is this one of the best mid-range story?
- 5:15Yes, yes, it's definitely. Yeah, if we were writing this
- 5:20though, in terms of wet bombs coming up and that's right in
- 5:26the top is the number one model we ever had.
- 5:33Yeah, but not have any more questions?
- 5:52Well, of course he does because it's Fraser a kind.
- 5:55And have you have another one? Should canine have been written
- 5:58out before this story and saved the humiliation of being reduced
- 6:01to a head on a stick, but it's great boy.
- 6:06You know what? It just makes some good points
- 6:09for ice, all right? Yeah, it too often.
- 6:16It's a tough one because I wouldn't I wouldn't want to lose
- 6:18any John Leeson performance because I'm glad he came back.
- 6:23But you're right. He's a bit of a cipher this
- 6:26year. Is a lie, is abuse terribly.
- 6:29But I'm really like the image of the master man having the head
- 6:35as a trophy, mmm, and carrying around on his stick.
- 6:39And you know, when he has his mental breakdown in Warriors
- 6:41gate, you know, yeah, attracting a warning warning.
- 6:44I love all of that stuff, especially when he gets kicked
- 6:47by the fellow from Ram. I wouldn't lose a story that I
- 6:56would not at all and he's had a he's had his hero moments in
- 7:01this story as well as getting his head knocked off.
- 7:05How could he ask you that question?
- 7:07I don't you said that tale of you've about having your
- 7:10fabulous canine on a string. You know, I think of six five
- 7:15six year old. So I heart right now.
- 7:17Imagine someone asking you that question of canine, leave the
- 7:21series Honestly. Okay, on that note, I get B and
- 7:38by a funky mind-controlling melon spider Exeter loading, a
- 7:48marsh man, I don't know one. Good person to Snug them.
- 7:53Just said, LOL award. I'll be there like, I sure don't
- 7:55wake her slogans I think you'd have to marry him.
- 7:59I'm gonna I'm going to Snug the marshmallow.
- 8:02Okay, I'm going to marry Logan because he said you don't know
- 8:09what he's going to be doing on you while you're asleep it.
- 8:11Come at me with a bloody scalpel.
- 8:12Is what exactly? Yeah.
- 8:14Okay, that's a we done. What does this set?
- 8:17What does setting this story in East Bay?
- 8:19San to it, if we covered that it has, yeah, sorry, Freddie, yeah,
- 8:23great deal with, I'm on it could be set in n space is good.
- 8:26Nick. Tell the same story, but it's
- 8:29more the bigger. It's, as we said in episode one,
- 8:33in some setting, the biggest scene, isn't it?
- 8:35It's the only one that's essentially space is or is gay?
- 8:39Yes, I well should we go into part that's going to Poll for
- 8:43Fraser. Thank you for the question.
- 8:44Thank you very much. I'm sure more will crop up.
- 8:48Are we observing? Enjoy your Toby.
- 8:50Yes right here we go with part 4 then it become with me now and I
- 8:55will. Okay, in five Clock chiming.
- 8:58Yeah, will you please play an Oscar?
- 9:00Okay. In 5 4, 3 2 1, come on Blu-ray
- 9:06and him go. You know, when somebody says
- 9:09something enough times, you start to believe it's true.
- 9:11I believe you have to do something 40 odd times for it to
- 9:15be true. Well, Frasier, I said that
- 9:17you've liked her mother's more than 40 times as start to think.
- 9:21Is true, is it true? Oh, it's not, it's him.
- 9:26Most This is phrase and then we did a commentary where he spent
- 9:36five episodes. Saying nice things about it.
- 9:39It's not about. I was very funny though.
- 9:41Oh here we go. Down the stairs let my name's
- 9:45lovely green. Boots up equally this is fashion
- 9:49watch. Just a hint of petticoat under
- 9:53the bottom of the skirt. That's nice.
- 9:55I mean a whore. What has happened to you?
- 9:58Petticoats indeed, I like that. Could I like Ramona's costume.
- 10:03So are we under running or over running?
- 10:05Because I can't tell if it's a long reprise on it's quite sure
- 10:07what actually, isn't it? Yeah, it's not.
- 10:09Yeah, because she's just about to open the doors so we're not
- 10:13she looks very Swift. You know what I'm absolutely
- 10:16going to say. I think Matthew what house gives
- 10:18his best performers is when he's alone with tombe.
- 10:22Yes. Because there he looked like he
- 10:24knew what he was doing in that same.
- 10:27He's yeah, it's such a weird Choice.
- 10:30I'll be asking Michelle. What is Miss fall outside?
- 10:39Of course it is. You know, when the Mist Falls
- 10:43say that's very of likes of ancient myths.
- 10:46It is yeah. And in the book, there's a whole
- 10:51poem about missed fall and something that's grown up as
- 10:55part of their mythology that they, they say to each other.
- 10:59Now, we've had the answer spell out to us now, but not in
- 11:04dialogue know she's been bitten by the spider which has taken
- 11:08her over. Yeah.
- 11:09Marshman of come inside, Starlight special, she's linked.
- 11:13So there's something that links, all those three.
- 11:15Yes. And it's not I don't think he's
- 11:18ever White spell out then adopted us.
- 11:22They say it's from Mars child. Yes but it's not either to
- 11:25marshman to see this panel on the wall here.
- 11:28Yeah that is part of the teleport control from The
- 11:32Liberator. ACA what it was when the consul
- 11:36was broken up. It's a little scratches after
- 11:40season 3. So he's pillaging its resources
- 11:43babies. Absolutely doing that.
- 11:45But go back to this, it's the relationship between Ramona.
- 11:50And the marshman isn't spelled out in dialogue.
- 11:53It's spelled out in action. Oh yeah, aah.
- 11:56Yeah. But literally the pieces have
- 11:58been put down. Yeah.
- 12:00So if you're a Savvy viewer, your Super PAC has bitten by the
- 12:05spider. She's got an affinity with the
- 12:06marshman, something links. Those three things together on
- 12:11those timeloss dying, I think they do based on deceit, hear
- 12:17really well. Yes, it's nice.
- 12:19What? Because it feels like there's a
- 12:20lot of marshman because you've got some attacking the Great
- 12:23Hall and the corridor, some in the and there are only six
- 12:27costumes, but because they're he's very cleverly putting them
- 12:30in different locations. Yeah.
- 12:34Like I was saying in the robots Dev commentary last night.
- 12:38I think the death of a based on deceit story is where you can
- 12:42leave the base. Yes.
- 12:44So, a lot of nice crowd stories. They head off into the
- 12:47Himalayas. Yeah.
- 12:48Or they go into Antarctica. Yeah, in the ice water and when
- 12:52viewed from the deep and if so free, they head back to the
- 12:55Tardis to do a few. They so it's not where our
- 12:58undersea in robots to death. You never leave the samurai not
- 13:01to the threats was there. And in this episode 4 we never
- 13:04leave the Starliner and because you've got Quite a number of
- 13:10extras for Doctor Who and you've seen them all the way through
- 13:13and it's the same face is cropping up.
- 13:15Yeah, when the violence comes to those people although you don't
- 13:18know them know them. You you recognize the people
- 13:22because you built the relationship up, do you think
- 13:24that need for had had to die? I've been that's quite sad.
- 13:29I love, that is love for these free useless Bunch going off in
- 13:32the style. Finest give up, but I think he
- 13:35probably does because I think Logan will be the person who
- 13:40leads them. Yeah, they set up.
- 13:44Yeah, it's been set up as that and he can't can't do that if
- 13:47need fraud is there. He's basically the rational one
- 13:50is. Yes I think what you've got here
- 13:53is, you've got the three from Carnival and monsters Avenue.
- 13:57Yoram is the skin cell count. Yeah, I pledge track is me Fred.
- 14:05And there is Alec Alec, is there?
- 14:07On even one know maybe Logan secretly.
- 14:10Yeah, take five over one up in the air.
- 14:14Oh uses canines, he doesn't well yeah, just to scare them away.
- 14:22I miss most about what must be a business from Tom.
- 14:26You know, what's really interesting as well, is in the
- 14:29Tom Baker years, and in the Blu-ray, behind the sofa sets
- 14:34where Tom is forced to watch his own time in the show.
- 14:40He's very complimentary of seasoning saying.
- 14:43How do you know he wasn't at the time?
- 14:45No. But he would find some the
- 14:47watching us behind surface is going.
- 14:48This is really good. I remember there was glad to see
- 14:51the cassette of that one. Yeah, measure hard, wasn't it?
- 14:54And always remember when he'd watched full circle and he says
- 14:58all sorry, I was just thinking how pretty long looked in that
- 15:03lovely little bit of affection. See, they're quite sad on that.
- 15:08Because Ty losses. Yes.
- 15:10Dead. Just Kira die, though.
- 15:12She cannot she survives. He called Massacre.
- 15:16All that. She'll know that would be just
- 15:18as good. But it is interesting how, you
- 15:21know, obviously he wasn't very complimentary about any of this
- 15:24at the time. No, because he was on the way
- 15:26out. Is ego was somewhere in the
- 15:28stratosphere and you know, he's generally behaving appallingly
- 15:32but in retrospect he can see the many strengths of this year.
- 15:38I love this lot of water, so that's swiping at it.
- 15:41What is so cat like is? Yeah.
- 15:46That's the way she hugs the Tardis.
- 15:47Yeah. Well recognized by the time, he
- 15:51Strokes it. Yeah, and she's just sort of
- 15:53touch me making it. It's a really interesting
- 15:56performance. It says she won't let any of
- 16:01them. She's near so far from lady at
- 16:05Astros and ye not loaded ra and I don't think so.
- 16:08Princess Astra Fair Princess Astro lady address.
- 16:29Oh my God. Doctor, Who I fear, we have not
- 17:03sure. We have nice.
- 17:05Oh, well, we can always drink. Oh yeah.
- 17:10They're trying to scour the books now.
- 17:11Yeah. How can we deal with this
- 17:13Invasion? Nothing it's like this is I
- 17:19swear to God this is a comment on politician.
- 17:21Absolutely yeah. It's just what do we do
- 17:23anything? That's precipitous that's going
- 17:25to I guess. This rampaging hordes of
- 17:27monsters will just stay here, shall we?
- 17:31But two stories later doing nothing is exactly what you had.
- 17:36That's really true. Isn't?
- 17:38It is and that's the way out. Yeah always fun are so
- 17:42interesting because I thought of Tom Baker's doctor doing nothing
- 17:46and that's what he says do nothing.
- 17:48Yeah he's really okay I'll varsha is going to go in the
- 17:58video. Let's look at him one last time
- 18:00because he's very pretty. He's going to sort of olive
- 18:05colored skin. Yeah, some people are blessed
- 18:08with. Not me though.
- 18:10Hey there's a ghost. Look at that for women in the
- 18:14show. What finals?
- 18:17These four tries to climb? I have a club, so why is it one
- 18:27touch? Kills people, they just got like
- 18:28a toxic screen I'm guessing so. Oh, Bloody question marks.
- 18:35It's a really interesting watching this.
- 18:37What's not? I didn't notice them at all.
- 18:39I thought they were They were okay, but it's interesting
- 18:42watching this season with you could see where Tom's trying to
- 18:45hide them when he can attack them in, and also use be told no
- 18:50show them. Look at this.
- 18:52This is so cute. He seemed at your house of
- 18:55genuinely, giving some bloody eye cream, because he's next on
- 18:59biker. And yeah, I think when Davison
- 19:02comes in Matthew Weiss 10 things, he's the, it's not the
- 19:06lead of this show, and so he's a bit cocky and it.
- 19:10Doesn't suit him at all but where it seems to me.
- 19:13You can't steal the screen from Tom Baker because no one can but
- 19:16he can from Peter Davison, because he's a very generous
- 19:19actor and it don't work. All those things you've got to
- 19:24do is say, well Monarch is a marvelous frog is going to give
- 19:30us five schools. This is quite sweet, isn't it?
- 19:36When they feel like these things are quite poignant and the fact
- 19:40that his he gets a death line, which is a plot twist.
- 19:44We cannot return to Herod on because we have never been
- 19:49there. You could just wait.
- 19:57Deaf twist. Yes.
- 19:59A ago. I'm doing a flight for entirety
- 20:02thing here. They invented the exposition
- 20:05coma. Yeah space space, space things.
- 20:08Yeah and face reasons, face reasons, so we're going to say
- 20:14death twist. Yes.
- 20:18Or worse. Is that is when the deaf twist
- 20:20doesn't mean you ever when Lisa and try and do it.
- 20:22Exactly. Doesn't even get no.
- 20:25Answer to a simple question. He's got blood on his head.
- 20:31Yes, I'm But even there, right? Yeah, I normal another normal
- 20:36weight. He's director.
- 20:37Would just point it and shoot ya grimwade came in across the
- 20:41saying. Yeah, alstom, very slowly.
- 20:43I know I'm pointing out alive. Simple camera moves, but it's
- 20:47elevates. It didn't use it.
- 20:49Is simple ever move the camera. What's it was?
- 20:51Was there Peter muffin? It's it's just a little bit more
- 20:56interesting to look at than your average 80s Doctor, Who Yeah,
- 21:01they look at each other. Like what you mean?
- 21:02We never been there. Nothing.
- 21:06So who reveals the twist? That they are.
- 21:10They are the marshman Tom. The doctor does.
- 21:13Doesn't he? And a second?
- 21:14Yeah, this is where your ancestors.
- 21:18And you know, like we've got what sort of monsters rampaging
- 21:22around, but they're not the scariest monsters.
- 21:24And no no and there's no big showdown between the dirt around
- 21:28a villain. That's maybe that's why this
- 21:30because there isn't actually a villain.
- 21:33He's just someone doing his job. Yeah.
- 21:36And maybe because it is smarter than your average doctor.
- 21:39Yeah. Maybe that's it.
- 21:41Because it's not the usual stuff.
- 21:43People's over one sort of set piece.
- 21:45Here is sort of a bit of camporee.
- 21:48A big villain Showdown. You haven't had much of that
- 21:52really is it quite subtle this? Yeah, I think, I think that's it
- 21:56and subtle always gets lost and I think it probably could have
- 22:02been interminable with a Bad director.
- 22:04Yes. But because it's so well might.
- 22:06Yes, exactly. But if you compare this to the
- 22:09State of Decay where you have got big villains and you do get
- 22:13confrontations between the doctor and Alcorn and you have
- 22:16got a big finale. And it's a big, big deal.
- 22:20If I was going to my shelf, are you topic upstage?
- 22:24Oh hey you know all ready to feed our hunger was you will
- 22:31swarm you eyeing the resting place.
- 22:36I'm Walkin, welcome to my domain.
- 22:40I once worked in the Bureau of ancient Rome's, most favorite
- 22:43scene in the whole season. It's wonderful side.
- 22:48Me before. Yes.
- 22:50I suppose I am never really thought about it better for that
- 22:53door in my face. Oh, this shot of lalla Ward.
- 22:58Yeah. Backlit coming through the grill
- 23:01is Right. Marvelous.
- 23:04You look at blood here, she is terrified to finally get that
- 23:10Bloody Tom only thing that's scarier than Tom Baker in a
- 23:13mood. This is all the water.
- 23:18It's true. There's only one way to find
- 23:21out. Oh wow.
- 23:26That is goes nice. Graceful fall again.
- 23:39The deciders are now creeping through this ship with the two
- 23:42people that survived. And it's Logan.
- 23:48Who is in command. Yeah.
- 23:53I like you've got Vash and adric both using these fire.
- 23:58Extinguishers. Only one of them looks
- 24:00convincing with it fascists out Butch.
- 24:04Yeah, probably like a machine gun.
- 24:07Yeah. I think maybe Richard Willis is
- 24:13used to handling himself. Yeah.
- 24:16Have you what has happened at all when experienced?
- 24:18Yeah. Oh this period of s where she
- 24:21sits up and grins this. Useful.
- 24:23I'm Tom. That brings his beautiful smile
- 24:27as well, you could try Journal aircrew electrophoresis Always
- 24:34run to someone said that this scene demonstrates the
- 24:39difference between season 18 and and 17 because you don't woken
- 24:43up and said something incredibly witty.
- 24:46Yes, he's in 17. Yeah.
- 24:47And yeah. And 18.
- 24:49She's got a bit of technobabble what she said in the season 7.
- 24:54I don't know why she has so much great.
- 24:56You despicable worm. Listen, the power complex.
- 25:02Well, that fits you may be watching this stuff, too.
- 25:10I'll sacrifice. And then you've got a character
- 25:15on there is, isn't there yet? It's all here, Vicky when this
- 25:23season. And well, yes, we'll need a
- 25:26drink. Well, I think, maybe Lot of
- 25:31excitement, your Father's Farm was hardly the are back.
- 25:34My dear not reach this far. Why you are not Aaron will come
- 25:40and rescue us 1980s? Aren't Vanessa no night errands?
- 25:44I love her so much. I love the most.
- 25:47It's we're taking comes out, goes in.
- 25:49She goes, oh, she's gone again reminds me of calf from
- 25:54Catherine. Kim.
- 25:57I still think we missed a trick. Not having RT.
- 25:59Vanessa, as a companion. You know, she'd alive would have
- 26:03loved her. Would she laugh and uptime
- 26:05flight? Wasn't she a bit?
- 26:07What the yellows joint? One poops.
- 26:13I'll know if I die. Don't worry.
- 26:16You've got a beautiful future ahead with Kate Amara.
- 26:19Yeah, you're going to be all right.
- 26:22What a pretty couple. They must have been other
- 26:24pictures of the time together must be somewhere.
- 26:26Oh God. Look at all the way.
- 26:29Oh, did you see how nice He's trying his hand in terms of a
- 26:45script, this is very well done. Let's just Matthew what house?
- 26:48That's the side down a bit She was just sort of sits there
- 26:55looking a bit. Yeah, he's You think the doctor
- 27:01would come for him? Yeah, but Tom's doctor isn't A
- 27:05comforter. Is he always because that bit in
- 27:07the gospel is where he where he's thinking, I'm sorry, I'm so
- 27:11sorry and Pat's her on the shoulder and then walks off,
- 27:15then the Lord scarman in. Yeah.
- 27:17Well as a market anything from our told him not to.
- 27:21Yeah. So to get any remark of comfort
- 27:24from him is something and something.
- 27:27The Davison does a lot better. Yes, and that Colin does really
- 27:31well as well. Yes, surprisingly just let him
- 27:36go. Come on that faster.
- 27:37That's it. Maybe that's why it's the
- 27:40learning. They learn to let themselves out
- 27:43that the climax of this story is the plot.
- 27:47The last piece of the jigsaw puzzle.
- 27:49Yeah. In together instead of like a
- 27:52big dramatic set piece. Yeah.
- 27:55And this is literally just a conversation.
- 27:57Yeah. So maybe that's it.
- 28:02That's it's very good. And this is Tom Sowell, they'll
- 28:05come in and they'll learn how to put it back together again.
- 28:09Say your ancestors. That's the climax.
- 28:13That's it. That's and that's where where
- 28:16they realized that they that's why we can't return to Terra
- 28:18Don. I was hilarious if the big it's
- 28:22going. Well, it does require some
- 28:25faults and we think oh, they're not optimistic ending with the
- 28:30lovely music. Yeah, ships going up.
- 28:34And so, but you could just imagine the conversations
- 28:36between the two of them. Yeah.
- 28:38Well should we press the button? Do we have the right?
- 28:44Yeah, how quickly your phone against the appraisal came out
- 28:46as with anything else. You never know, you know, I can
- 28:50keep talking about Logan's, but there is one one story, but
- 28:54maybe one more question, but maybe we'll do that at the end,
- 28:56okay. It did quite well, boys.
- 28:59I did it as a very last minute. Yeah.
- 29:04They learn to come in so that should be the ultimate reason as
- 29:07to why they should go. Yes.
- 29:11So, they're not going to evolve again, are they?
- 29:13That's the end of The evolutionary that they've
- 29:16reached the Pinnacle, which is, where is this useless bums gone
- 29:20in a space, then they've taken off aware of the land.
- 29:24Well, the ship is programmed to find a Planet where they can
- 29:28live because it's a colony ship. So that's what it says he says
- 29:33this. Now they picked up a signal, you
- 29:35know, come to Utopia. I'll stay win.
- 29:39Haha, to the phone Nassif. Land on the vampire plan.
- 29:42Exactly the upper side of it because obviously.
- 29:49All right, you got that can travel in time and space.
- 29:51No, the car? No, I don't think so.
- 29:53It's like, well, if anyone's in the future and they're like, all
- 29:55we've had this, this cost you will see is also one of the
- 29:58tidal streams or they've all been drained of blood.
- 30:03All this is really cute, huh? He's right on those, you know,
- 30:10just press those few buttons there.
- 30:12There you go. Off, you go and Tom and Lana
- 30:16striding off in a minute together.
- 30:17Both in burgundy, it's your pink instead, look at that, you'll
- 30:21find they're just brilliant together.
- 30:25Green button, gentlemen, that must be the bit of Tom business.
- 30:31I'll kind of a genocidal policies in Parliament, you
- 30:34know, like, right, we've got our do this with and so as this but
- 30:37it does require some support, just do nothing.
- 30:43What have a few meetings about me Parts first?
- 30:45You know, decide when the first meeting is going to be okay,
- 30:51there we go. The greatest team back together
- 30:54have? Well, we able we don't realize
- 30:56yet. Do we know he stuck a ways
- 30:58inside remote better? Exactly.
- 31:00She's gonna get a terrible shock when she goes to bed.
- 31:08Loot, he stole that. So this is the last gasp of the
- 31:15three of them. Isn't it?
- 31:16Because I really well, I've always it's after this.
- 31:19Yeah, one. I've got those nice things at
- 31:21the start of State of Decay, when they're in the console
- 31:24room. And I'll know, I actually know
- 31:26that is their last God. Yeah, we're not a technical,
- 31:32you've got it doctor. What's the technical Africa?
- 31:35Africa? Don't know.
- 31:36Would you say it's only Rococo? No, I won't look.
- 31:47Absolutely, I'm not looking at, all right.
- 31:55I always find this quite an optimistic ending though.
- 31:57Yeah. Like the ships are taking off.
- 31:59We're going to the way home gloomy looking out at the
- 32:02scanner. For the first time in ages, are
- 32:16actual commentary where we talked about Staffing, the
- 32:18student out quite a lot that I think, maybe because we're
- 32:21sitting on your sofa. Yes, maybe there.
- 32:23But yeah, that might be it. Imagine we've got pizza and beer
- 32:26around us, all right, no pizza for me, I had the beer cheese.
- 32:33Okay, so what's first? Okay, he's a rank.
- 32:35This story with the rest of pizza.
- 32:37Grim, weights all because that's, that's a really hard one
- 32:42because he's got lakopolous. He's got Kinder.
- 32:47He's got her shot and he's got this hang on, though, because
- 32:50he's of no specifics. I'm not.
- 32:52Is he saying we've got a rank them in the direction of those
- 32:55stories or the stories overall. Well, he just says rank this
- 32:59story with the rest of pizza. Grim weights.
- 33:02So I figure, let's answer it from a Direction.
- 33:05Point of view. Okay.
- 33:07In terms of Direction. Hmm, I'd say Earth.
- 33:10Shock is probably his best Direction.
- 33:13Yeah it's certainly the pieces to this far side.
- 33:16Yeah and that I think the last episode has a hundred senior mix
- 33:21so I'd like that and to do that in there BBC Studio at the time.
- 33:25So productive cameras. So I say of shock I probably say
- 33:32kindda I'm going in reverse Yeah.
- 33:35Populist full circle but they were all good.
- 33:38Yes. Candice directions.
- 33:42So it's so unusual. Yeah, I think because you've got
- 33:48those surreal scenes like the bit leading up to the end of pot
- 33:52Brie with the clock's ticking and all of that.
- 33:55And that's astonishing this direction that that's a
- 33:58cliffhanger that should work. Yeah, really does.
- 34:01And he convinced he gets in the right actors?
- 34:05Yeah, to convince like Hindu of his breakdown.
- 34:09And also I think the Cliffhanger that spot to where they're going
- 34:13to open the box, and that is incredibly changed with our
- 34:17good. No, that's that's just someone
- 34:18opening a box. But but then I think about those
- 34:21things with a Watcher in lakopolous.
- 34:23Yeah. And the location working this.
- 34:25Yeah. That's seen in part 1 of
- 34:28lakopolous. Where Tom comes up the Tardis
- 34:30and sees the water for the first time I think is one of the most
- 34:34often brilliant Doctor Who sings ever, because it's all done
- 34:37with. No dialogue is all done.
- 34:39With Tom's acting and the moment he sees the Watcher and he
- 34:43suddenly goes almost gray. Yeah.
- 34:46And he's he's tired and defeated Suddenly by just by and that
- 34:52image of The Watcher from across the road, just standing there
- 34:57was again, really unsettling image of my childhood.
- 35:02I have been some this up. Okay.
- 35:04Well they're all gray in different ways.
- 35:08Yeah, he might be a complete Nutter to work with.
- 35:13But he was a van, tastic director.
- 35:15Yes. And I said, earlier, doctor who
- 35:17lost something, when it lost him, I saw Ian Levine given
- 35:20interview ones where he said that, you know what, he might
- 35:23have pissed off the cast, but he did right by the show and it's
- 35:27true. It's absolutely true.
- 35:29Absolutely right. Well, sigh.
- 35:32Okay, I'm gonna do all things that we reasons.
- 35:36I've got 40 reasons, probably, okay.
- 35:40Start us off. All right, I'm going Going to go
- 35:43with lot of boards because she doesn't get masses to do in this
- 35:51story, really, but she becomes absolutely Central to it.
- 35:56And those have phenomenal scream, her wonderful
- 36:02world-weary. Absolutely sad scene at the
- 36:06start, with Tom isn't is a pivotal moment in this season
- 36:13where she doesn't want to go, but they've got to do what's
- 36:17right and the whole possessed acting I think is some of the
- 36:21best I gr P NG is probably the best possessed acting of any
- 36:27companion ever and there's plenty of it.
- 36:30Yeah, there's loads more. He like, yeah, well, maybe I
- 36:34actually met maybe it's Janet Fielding actually in snake.
- 36:37Dance is but what she does. Wordless Lee is wonderful.
- 36:46I am going to say the location work in episodes. 1 & 2.
- 36:50Yeah, which I think. So, I had to My session with
- 36:53Guerra Russell and day of the doubts about The Tomorrow.
- 36:56People. Yeah.
- 36:57And he said that, he thought that the location work in The
- 37:00Tomorrow, People is the best sort of location work.
- 37:03He's ever seen on television. I don't think that's at all,
- 37:07true, but I do think some of the best location work I can
- 37:11remember seeing on television in sort of the 70s 80s is in season
- 37:1718. Yeah, I think the location
- 37:19working full circle and in-state and I'm lakopolous is all black,
- 37:27top tier and Brighton Beach and broad-based very very quick.
- 37:33But yeah. So I'm going to say the location
- 37:36work because it's not just like, a camera going on location.
- 37:41He's dressed it. He's literally and he's chosen
- 37:45to shoot it in an exciting way. Yeah.
- 37:48No, it is really good. Is a nice use of a location that
- 37:51they come back to quite a lot of Over the next few years, but it
- 37:55always always looks good. Okay.
- 37:59My second one because I'm predictable is Tom Baker, okay?
- 38:03Because they're the one of those questions that comes up on
- 38:08Twitter, is what's the hill? You will die on.
- 38:11And I always say the hill, I will die on.
- 38:13Is that Tom Baker is on fire in season 18 and it never ever gets
- 38:20enough recognition. He Is doing really interesting
- 38:25and different stuff with the doctor for the first time in a
- 38:28long time. He is not coasting.
- 38:30I'm, although is acting against us although I was not pointed
- 38:34out when we did nightmare of Eden.
- 38:36I don't think he's coasting through a lot of season 17 in
- 38:39the way that people think he is. But this year, he's had his
- 38:43buttons pressed and she's got to do as he's told, but it makes
- 38:48his doctor really. There's some fire in his belly
- 38:51and there's some some really interesting Trusting choices and
- 38:55I think for me and this might be a lot of nostalgia as well.
- 38:59I've been the definitive fourth doctor is seen through season 18
- 39:03because you've got all the different aspects of his doctor
- 39:06all in. Yeah, it's very funny and they
- 39:09gloss very and stay Decay. Yep.
- 39:11And he's like, he's surprisingly funny in the Leisure Hive which
- 39:15no one ever picks up on or a scarf then.
- 39:17Yeah. But also, you've got the root
- 39:20that do me grave moments as well.
- 39:24You've got the Ferocious anger of this performance.
- 39:27You got them the beaten down and tired doctor at the end, and
- 39:34it's a real. I could you've got every aspect
- 39:36of his daughter. I think he gives his last really
- 39:38funny. Operatic performance in State of
- 39:40Decay. That's very much like his
- 39:42season. 17 doctor only slightly, less witty makes be charming and
- 39:47keep her trial. He is he's in a good mood,
- 39:49Innkeeper of truck and he's enjoying working with Anthony
- 39:52ainley, and Wanted in logopolis. Yeah, and that's something new
- 39:56that we have seen in him. And at the very last babies
- 39:59shown signs people look, I'm going with this, I can do this
- 40:03and I don't think he ever gets enough credit for what he's
- 40:05doing. It's always well, he's not doing
- 40:08this and he's not doing that and he's hungover and he's tired.
- 40:11And yet there are aspects that he's not well, but he's watching
- 40:16throughout this story, he's, he's world-weary at the start
- 40:20but he's got the fire in his belly by part 2.
- 40:23He's there and once he's got the mystery and he's repairing the
- 40:28Tardis and he's grinning and he's yeah, it's great.
- 40:31He's right. Great stuff.
- 40:32Okay. I'm going to try be less
- 40:35predictable then and not say all of the mail flashes on this, but
- 40:41I am going to say, I'm going to say that it was very bold to
- 40:50structure. A story in an unconventional.
- 40:53N tional way. Yeah, the big hitting moments
- 40:58are twists in the plot rather than set pieces and sort of big
- 41:04moments of drama. And to go back to phrases
- 41:08question. I think that might be why this
- 41:09one slips under the radar a little bit, but I really admire
- 41:14it do it taking that very intelligent course and and doing
- 41:19something. They're little less
- 41:20melodramatic. Yeah, I had a little smarter and
- 41:24good stuff. Okay.
- 41:25And my final choice is Paddy Kingsland because this is a
- 41:30hugely memorable school. For me, I think because I had
- 41:34this I had this story on The music really stood out.
- 41:38And I think this is what settled my love of Doctor, Who music was
- 41:41listening to the different passages in this.
- 41:44So that little thing. You've got the Tardis spinning
- 41:46in space did a little due to the dentist is great.
- 41:53And you've got the most stay in your lane.
- 41:55All right, that's my job. But you've got the marshman that
- 41:58you've got the deciders being dumb.
- 42:00Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb dumb.
- 42:10He's coming in, he's just writing is it's very theme heavy
- 42:14so you know who you are and way who you're seeing and where they
- 42:18are, but it's great and it's the first of a long run for it
- 42:24because every school bipedal kingdom is really brilliant but
- 42:27he will hone this in Coppola. Something particularly is
- 42:33probably his best. But I love this music.
- 42:36I cannot argue with any of your free things, my last thing then
- 42:41is going to be I'm gonna say Richard Willis.
- 42:49Okay Paul. Yeah.
- 42:51Who absolutely should have been a jerk.
- 42:53Yeah. But then imagine Matthew what
- 42:57houses are shy mean. Jesus Christ who I think is very
- 43:02convincing in the wrong. Yeah, smoking hot.
- 43:06He is so sorry boy and I don't feel sad because of Matthew.
- 43:12Waterhouse acting went viral Stars.
- 43:14Know I feel sad because I like far, she's a character Her and I
- 43:18think that group of kids, it's three, not very good actors and
- 43:25one really good actor and he kind of Salvage is a lot of
- 43:29those seen. Yes.
- 43:30So Richard Willis, good luck, the fascinating.
- 43:33New fact, I learned about him and Kate and yeah, there we go.
- 43:36You're gonna have to investigate that now, kids don't things.
- 43:39That will sigh where we go next? Well, okay, Okay, I'm going to
- 43:47throw something at you now. Go on actually no, no, I'm not
- 43:51going to throw something. Literally at you.
- 43:54Let's go back. 10 years. Ten years from this story.
- 43:58No no no, let's go back 10 years from now.
- 44:02Okay. And let's do the Day of the
- 44:04Doctor or because I'm ready for a big hitter.
- 44:10Okay, are you ready to take that on?
- 44:13I absolutely am ready to say. Okay.
- 44:15Okay, I'm surprised. No one's know.
- 44:17That is snap that one. Have they?
- 44:21You're on? Okay, you and me or you me and
- 44:23Fraser? I don't know.
- 44:26I might be back up. Or talk to him.
- 44:29We will then enable a doctors in one story, three of us had 13
- 44:33hamsters. In one story could be amazing.
- 44:36Could be, could be okay but that anyone starts making jokes about
- 44:40sizes of Sonic screwdrivers and all that out of it, right?
- 44:44This is a family podcast. You didn't expect that.
- 44:50Did you normally? I'll say thank you for your
- 44:53time. Yeah.
- 44:55Thank you very much for coming to my house and recording a
- 44:57hamster. You're so welcome.
- 44:59Thank you very much for treat me like a prince, my pleasure.
- 44:58You're so welcome. Thank you very much for treat me
- 45:01like a prince, my pleasure.
