- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with you the next round on Sport and State here.
- 0:04Speaker 1: You know who's been out of sight, out of mind
- 0:06Speaker 1: for a while now?
- 0:07Speaker 2: Michael Jordan.
- 0:09Speaker 1: That's true. I mean, there's a lot of correct answers here. Boy,
- 0:12Speaker 1: we talked so much about Pete Golding and Ole Miss
- 0:14Speaker 1: for a while.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 0:16Speaker 1: They lose a game and then get a bye week.
- 0:17Speaker 1: We haven't talked about them in a long, long time.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Pete Golding, they're back at it this weekend as Ole
- 0:24Speaker 1: Miss goes on the road to Nashville to play Vandy
- 0:26Speaker 1: as a 10-point favorite. And Pete had a chance to
- 0:30Speaker 1: talk this week before we talk bubble watch about the
- 0:33Speaker 1: grind of being in the Southeastern Conference.
- 0:37Speaker 4: And man, like you got to outwork people here. And
- 0:39Speaker 4: that's a what have you done for me lately business.
- 0:41Speaker 4: And we got to coach it better and we got
- 0:42Speaker 4: to hold them accountable to do it. But they got
- 0:44Speaker 4: to want to do it. And I've seen that, you know,
- 0:47Speaker 4: last week and I saw it last night. But it
- 0:49Speaker 4: don't matter what I say. It's what matter what product
- 0:51Speaker 4: is on the field at 230 on Saturday. So we
- 0:54Speaker 4: could talk about all we want. We could set up
- 0:55Speaker 4: whatever drills we want. We talk about what changes we made.
- 0:58Speaker 4: It ain't going to matter until you put it on
- 1:00Speaker 4: tape and you do it consistently.
- 1:02Speaker 2: And guess what?
- 1:02Speaker 4: If you do it Saturday, right, and you've got to
- 1:05Speaker 4: come back Sunday, you've got to do it the next week, too,
- 1:07Speaker 4: because you've got an awesome Missouri team coming in here.
- 1:08Speaker 4: So it's week in and week out. So, you know,
- 1:11Speaker 4: our thing is we ain't got to talk about it.
- 1:12Speaker 4: We talk about noise. We talk about the noise after
- 1:14Speaker 4: the LSU game, right, and we talk about the noise
- 1:17Speaker 4: after the Florida game.
- 1:18Speaker 2: And you can go.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Google the same buddy that you're an All-American and now
- 1:21Speaker 4: you ain't worth a shit. So, like, that's going to
- 1:23Speaker 4: be week in and week out, right? You chose this, right,
- 1:26Speaker 4: and we all did, so. You know, that piece of it, man,
- 1:28Speaker 4: we got to go to work and we got to
- 1:30Speaker 4: identify our issues.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:32Speaker 4: And we got to find a way to improve those
- 1:33Speaker 4: and get better. And the things that we're doing well,
- 1:35Speaker 4: we still got to continue to do well. And there's
- 1:37Speaker 4: room for improvement in all three phases. No doubt.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Starting with me. One more thing before I want you
- 1:42Speaker 1: guys to comment on Ole Miss and we talk bubbles here.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Off of that, Pete got asked if he finds players
- 1:50Speaker 1: for not doing their job. You know, everybody gets money now.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Do you actually find players for not doing their job?
- 1:55Speaker 1: Here's Pete.
- 1:58Speaker 5: In this day and age, some teams use fines to
- 2:00Speaker 5: kind of, you know, as a corrective tool. Did you
- 2:03Speaker 5: use any of that when you see, you know, law
- 2:05Speaker 5: of plays or just plays that aren't up to the
- 2:07Speaker 5: standard this week?
- 2:08Speaker 4: Well, yeah, obviously you can't make them performance-based, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 4: from that standpoint. But there's a, you know, a cycle
- 2:16Speaker 4: coming in December and January, right, when everybody wants to
- 2:19Speaker 4: renegotiate their contract that, you know, it was very black
- 2:22Speaker 4: and white based on, all right, this is good enough,
- 2:24Speaker 4: this isn't good enough.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Like in all of our jobs.
- 2:27Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:28Speaker 4: You're going to have that meeting and like, hey, here's
- 2:29Speaker 4: your raise or how you're fired. Go get another job.
- 2:32Speaker 4: You know, so I think it's my responsibility before you
- 2:35Speaker 4: fire somebody to make sure you really call them in
- 2:37Speaker 4: and be like, hey, man, this is not OK.
- 2:40Speaker 7: Right.
- 2:40Speaker 4: This is the expectation. This is how we want it
- 2:42Speaker 4: done and clearly define it for them. And I think,
- 2:45Speaker 4: you know, that's the big thing coming out of it.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Nobody that's 18 or 23 wants to go and not
- 2:50Speaker 4: have success. Nobody's trying to miss the tackle. Nobody wants
- 2:53Speaker 4: to get beat deep over the top. But are you
- 2:56Speaker 4: doing the things Monday through Friday to give you your
- 2:58Speaker 4: best chance not to?
- 3:00Speaker 1: I thought that was a good answer. I can't find
- 3:02Speaker 1: them for performance every week, but I can bring them
- 3:06Speaker 1: in and say, look, there's coming a time we're going
- 3:08Speaker 1: to be renegotiating, going to get a raise, we're going
- 3:11Speaker 1: to tell you to walk, whatever. This is not acceptable.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I thought that was a good answer.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I do think what is interesting, because performance-based, as
- 3:18Speaker 2: he said, you can't do anything with NILs. But like
- 3:21Speaker 2: a Dylan Stewart situation, can you do it for disciplinary reasons?
- 3:25Speaker 1: Oh, that's interesting. I would imagine yes to that, don't you?
- 3:28Speaker 2: You should be able to.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, for instance, like Dylan Stewart is being paid by
- 3:32Speaker 1: South Carolina. Does the contract stipulate we're paying you for
- 3:36Speaker 1: a 12-game season or whatever that may be? If you
- 3:38Speaker 1: miss a game because of discipline, you don't get paid
- 3:40Speaker 1: for that game. I don't know how those contracts are worded.
- 3:43Speaker 1: So that would be interesting to know that. Yeah, so
- 3:45Speaker 1: let's talk. Go ahead. Well, just real quick, do you
- 3:47Speaker 1: feel like the honeymoon's over for him? And I'm not
- 3:50Speaker 1: saying that because I got drilled by Florida. It is crazy, though,
- 3:53Speaker 1: because they were the best thing. And we were talking
- 3:55Speaker 1: about Mike.
- 3:56Speaker 2: If they can win this game against LSU and the
- 3:59Speaker 2: way they won it, getting up 17 and then being
- 4:01Speaker 2: able to come back, but then they give up 52
- 4:03Speaker 2: the very next week.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Even in the best of marriages, the honeymoon ends at
- 4:06Speaker 1: some time. I mean, there's just a certain amount of
- 4:08Speaker 1: time where the honeymoon's over, and that's really what I'm
- 4:10Speaker 1: asking you is not because they got destroyed by Florida.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Could be this week. That's a dangerous game. I think
- 4:16Speaker 2: they win, but the way their defense is playing right now,
- 4:18Speaker 2: they're giving up a lot of yards, a lot of plays.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Vanderbilt is one of these teams. They just always, outside
- 4:24Speaker 2: of last week against Georgia, Keep it close.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And they don't... Vanderbilt usually, under Clark Lee, doesn't make
- 4:32Speaker 1: a lot of mistakes to kill themselves.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and I wonder, Jared Curtis, is he going to
- 4:36Speaker 2: be back? And that's big.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Because Blaze is not the guy.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Did you almost save Jared Curtis to get him healthy
- 4:43Speaker 1: for winnable games down the road?
- 4:44Speaker 2: Well, there was a Georgia theory that he didn't play because, remember,
- 4:49Speaker 2: on the 11th hour, he decided to turn and maybe not...
- 4:53Speaker 2: cause he's already a little beat up and going into Athens.
- 4:56Speaker 2: They would have been taking maybe some extra shots at
- 4:58Speaker 2: Jerry courtesy. You want to keep him healthy. You don't
- 5:00Speaker 2: want to kill the confidence. Wouldn't be surprised at all.
- 5:02Speaker 2: If that had a little bit to do with that.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Okay. I want to talk about coaches who have coached
- 5:07Speaker 1: themselves off of the hot seat so far this year,
- 5:12Speaker 1: and it can go difference, but, um, I'm going to,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I'm going to throw out a name and you tell
- 5:16Speaker 1: me if he's coached his way off of the hot
- 5:18Speaker 1: seat or not. Um, I find this very interesting because
- 5:22Speaker 1: this is a Friday night game. Mike Norvell, Florida State,
- 5:27Speaker 1: has he coached himself off of the hot seat? I mean,
- 5:32Speaker 1: that was an under-the-radar win over Virginia because I feel
- 5:36Speaker 1: like we've just started ignoring Florida State because you assume
- 5:39Speaker 1: it's just they fired the athletic director. This is a
- 5:42Speaker 1: man that's living on borrowed time. Respectable, in my opinion,
- 5:44Speaker 1: against Alabama. Yeah, I agree. He's played Alabama as well
- 5:47Speaker 1: as anybody else.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I mean, they were up two scores.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, nobody's played Alabama better. I was literally
- 5:52Speaker 1: talking to a Florida State fan at the golf course
- 5:54Speaker 1: just yesterday about this because he was like, man, I
- 5:57Speaker 1: am so torn. He's like, I was done with Norvell,
- 6:00Speaker 1: but we've actually started to play better. And I said,
- 6:03Speaker 1: you've played Alabama better than anybody and beat the brakes
- 6:06Speaker 1: off Virginia. That wasn't A last-second field goal, Lance.
- 6:09Speaker 2: I mean, they held them to 206 yards. They had
- 6:11Speaker 2: 10 sacks. Ashton Daniels is completely erratic, but he makes, like,
- 6:16Speaker 2: electric plays here and there.
- 6:18Speaker 1: A little backyard football.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Here's what I would say, though, about Florida State. Let's
- 6:24Speaker 2: hold it because I do not think they win Friday
- 6:26Speaker 2: night at Louisville. They haven't won a road game since,
- 6:31Speaker 2: you guys want to guess?
- 6:33Speaker 1: Is it Deion? No, I'm kidding. I would not even
- 6:37Speaker 1: know where to begin.
- 6:38Speaker 2: It's 2023. It's been three seasons of football since they
- 6:41Speaker 2: won a road game. So I agree where he is
- 6:44Speaker 2: right now. It seems like he's a little off the
- 6:46Speaker 2: hot seat. And Florida State is probably like, we really
- 6:49Speaker 2: don't want to pay that buyout. But let's just wait
- 6:51Speaker 2: because the next three weeks. Are they not favored at Louisville?
- 6:55Speaker 3: No.
- 6:56Speaker 2: At Louisville, at Miami, Clemson. They've still got to go
- 6:59Speaker 2: to Pitt. They've still got NC State. They've still got Florida.
- 7:02Speaker 2: There's a ton of losses coming up.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Keenhole's questionable in that Louisville game on Friday night.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I think he will play, though.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And Louisville played Ole Miss tough. Should have won that game.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Had that big win against SMU, and now haven't they
- 7:15Speaker 1: lost back-to-back games? Oh, yeah. Yep. So, I mean.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Jeff Brom, come on, man. But I mean, to good teams.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I mean, Wake's a good team. NC State, believe it
- 7:24Speaker 2: or not, I think they're a pretty good team.
- 7:26Speaker 1: I think Wake's the second best team in the ACC. So,
- 7:28Speaker 1: I mean, that wasn't as bad a loss as it
- 7:30Speaker 1: appears to be on the surface. Louisville went from playoff
- 7:34Speaker 1: contender to not. Other more than that in the bubble conversation.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Jeff Lebby, Mississippi State. They were 4-0 last year and
- 7:42Speaker 1: didn't win it.
- 7:44Speaker 2: If it completely imploded, I am fascinated because it is
- 7:48Speaker 2: so quiet on this Camario injury. And I think the
- 7:50Speaker 2: injury is a lot more significant than they're letting on.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And they're going into a bye week this week. But
- 7:56Speaker 2: when they come out of the bye week, they've got
- 7:57Speaker 2: to go to LSU. Do you guys see a path
- 7:59Speaker 2: to victory in Baton Rouge?
- 8:01Speaker 1: If he's 100% healthy, yes. But if he's not 100% healthy, no.
- 8:04Speaker 2: And their defense leaves a lot to be desired. I'm
- 8:07Speaker 2: surprised it played as well as it did against Missouri,
- 8:09Speaker 2: not allowing a point in the fourth quarter.
- 8:11Speaker 1: It allowed Alabama to set an all-time SEC record. So
- 8:14Speaker 1: that should tell you something.
- 8:14Speaker 2: But just think about this. These three games coming up
- 8:17Speaker 2: for Mississippi State out of the bye. At LSU, Oklahoma,
- 8:20Speaker 2: at Texas.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 2: But he still does have Vanderbilt, Auburn at home, Tennessee Tech,
- 8:26Speaker 2: and then, you know, at Ole Miss. Egg Bowl could
- 8:30Speaker 2: be a big.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Game for him.
- 8:31Speaker 2: He's fine.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Dave Aranda, Baylor.
- 8:35Speaker 2: One other quick point. I could see Camario say, you're
- 8:38Speaker 2: going to do something with Jeff Lebby, I'll go somewhere else.
- 8:40Speaker 1: That's right.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Coach stays, I play.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Jimmy Chitwood. Dave Aranda, two-point conversion away against Auburn from
- 8:48Speaker 1: being what?
- 8:49Speaker 2: The Klandy man.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Being undefeated. The Klandy man's coach. I don't blame anybody
- 8:53Speaker 1: for not staying up late Saturday and watching that game.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I did. They destroyed Arizona State. I mean, dismantled them
- 9:00Speaker 1: so much so. That everybody's darling a couple of years ago,
- 9:04Speaker 1: Kenny Dillingham, who, by the way, that trajectory is falling.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And he got somebody to write those big checks as
- 9:10Speaker 1: he brought in some big portal guys. Kenny Dillingham walking
- 9:13Speaker 1: off the field past his athletic director sarcastically says, well,
- 9:16Speaker 1: that was a fun one, wasn't it? I mean, they
- 9:18Speaker 1: got destroyed Saturday night. They need to get their next four.
- 9:21Speaker 1: And I think they're.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I don't know if they'll be favored in all four.
- 9:25Speaker 2: There's a good chance they are. TCU at Kansas, at
- 9:28Speaker 2: Central Florida, and Iowa State. If you can get those four,
- 9:30Speaker 2: you've still got to go to BYU, Texas Tech, and
- 9:33Speaker 2: at Houston. But if you get those four, you're eight wins,
- 9:36Speaker 2: and I think Aranda's probably okay with eight wins.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Easy, Luke Fickle. I think so. Easy off. I mean,
- 9:42Speaker 1: that was a guy. Basically, they said, we don't have
- 9:44Speaker 1: the money to buy him out. So we're giving him
- 9:46Speaker 1: one more year. And they gave him money. They gave
- 9:48Speaker 1: him the portal rather than pay the money on the buyout.
- 9:50Speaker 1: They gave him money on the portal and he's made
- 9:53Speaker 1: the most of it to his credit.
- 9:54Speaker 2: The the only they played one bad half of football
- 9:57Speaker 2: all year and that was the second half against Notre
- 9:59Speaker 2: Dame and it's understandable because Notre Dame's really really good
- 10:02Speaker 2: that was a one score.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Game go to that was it like 14 13 or
- 10:04Speaker 1: something going to the half.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Uh I think it was a one possession game 21
- 10:09Speaker 2: 13 but you know outside of the Penn State win
- 10:11Speaker 2: I mean Michigan State was was interesting because they won
- 10:13Speaker 2: the game by four.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Scores yeah what do they have coming up.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Uh at UCLA USC, at Iowa. But then they get Rutgers,
- 10:24Speaker 2: at Maryland, at Purdue, Minnesota.
- 10:25Speaker 1: So he's got to see. That's key right there because
- 10:27Speaker 1: when you're fighting for your job, if you can finish
- 10:30Speaker 1: on a 3-0, it feels a little different. Or even
- 10:33Speaker 1: a 4-0, maybe. I mean, like an 8-4 for him.
- 10:36Speaker 2: He's fine.
- 10:37Speaker 8: Oh.
- 10:37Speaker 1: An 8-4.
- 10:37Speaker 2: 7-5, he's fine.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Yeah, 7-5, he's probably okay.
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yeah, he's okay.
- 10:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I think Fickles coaches well.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And I would have said, you know, outside of buyouts, again,
- 10:45Speaker 2: we don't know all the numbers, much like Shane Beamer.
- 10:47Speaker 2: We discussed that yesterday. I would have said for sure
- 10:51Speaker 2: there is no way, I don't care what happens, Mike
- 10:53Speaker 2: Norvell and Luke Fickler are done.
- 10:55Speaker 1: This is when Reese on game day turns from the
- 10:57Speaker 1: panel to set up the final pick.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:00Speaker 1: And he tosses to a little video montage. Everybody goes nuts.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And then comes the nation's longest win streak, Indiana, into Lincoln, Nebraska,
- 11:07Speaker 1: where Big Red is waiting. Matt Rule, I don't know
- 11:11Speaker 1: if you had him on the hot seat or not
- 11:12Speaker 1: going into the year, but where? I mean, Matt Rule's
- 11:15Speaker 1: done a heck of a job this year. He's got
- 11:17Speaker 1: them 5-0, and it's the first time they have been 5-0,
- 11:21Speaker 1: believe it or not, in quite a while.
- 11:22Speaker 2: You know the last time they were 6-0?
- 11:25Speaker 1: Tom Osborne? It had to be Tom Osborne.
- 11:27Speaker 2: No, it was 2016, but it's been a decade.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 11:30Speaker 1: How bad has it gotten that we both thought it
- 11:32Speaker 1: was Tom Osborne? Well, we just go to the extremes.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Bob Devaney.
- 11:37Speaker 1: I mean, I think they're going to win this game
- 11:39Speaker 1: outright Saturday. I said it back in the summer. Oftentimes,
- 11:43Speaker 1: these win streaks end where you least expect it, and
- 11:46Speaker 1: you kind of least expect it here because of what
- 11:49Speaker 1: Indiana has after this game with Ohio State. I think
- 11:52Speaker 1: they're actually going to win this game. But what's your
- 11:55Speaker 1: reward for winning this game, Lance? You then get to
- 11:57Speaker 1: go to Oregon. Yeah. So, I mean, it's still a
- 12:00Speaker 1: difficult finish for Matt Rule, even if they win this game.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I disagree. I don't think they're going to win
- 12:06Speaker 2: the game. I look at Nebraska. The five teams they've
- 12:09Speaker 2: beaten are 0-10 against Power 14.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Oh, they're mad teams.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's Ohio, Bowling Green, North Dakota, Michigan State,
- 12:15Speaker 2: and Maryland. They've not beaten anybody with a pole. They've
- 12:18Speaker 2: beaten them soundly. They've beaten all five by at least
- 12:20Speaker 2: 18 points. And Calandria, the Mountain West— player of the
- 12:24Speaker 2: year last year is playing his ass off so i
- 12:26Speaker 2: think the quarterback position has improved i think they're playing
- 12:29Speaker 2: with a lot of confidence but they are switching gears
- 12:32Speaker 2: when they're taking on indiana i.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Think you could see this finish at eight and four
- 12:35Speaker 1: and is that enough for him is the question i
- 12:37Speaker 1: don't know the answer to because they've still they play
- 12:40Speaker 1: indiana if they lose that they're at oregon they've got
- 12:41Speaker 1: ohio state and they've got iowa those all feel like
- 12:44Speaker 1: better teams than them um and that's that's assuming you
- 12:48Speaker 1: beat washington at home you win at illinois who's been
- 12:50Speaker 1: a little disappointing and you win at rutgers if you
- 12:52Speaker 1: can't win at rutgers You're probably going to lose your
- 12:54Speaker 1: job anyway.
- 12:54Speaker 2: But I'll give you Rutgers. That's six wins. But if
- 12:56Speaker 2: they lose five of their final six. Bad landing. It's
- 13:00Speaker 2: going to feel different than it feels right now. It
- 13:02Speaker 2: feels really good with Indiana coming to town this weekend.
- 13:06Speaker 2: You can bet on playoffs and a lot of futures

- 14:00Speaker 2: going to give you the team or teams that Heather
- 14:04Speaker 2: Denich of ESPN believed to be not locks. You can't
- 14:09Speaker 2: go locks yet, but to be playoff teams to be
- 14:12Speaker 2: in right now. And then the team from that conference
- 14:16Speaker 2: that are fighting for, you know, to be in the bubble. Miami,
- 14:23Speaker 2: playoff team, obviously. The bubble in the ACC all of
- 14:26Speaker 2: a sudden looks to be Pitt, who has lost QB1,
- 14:32Speaker 2: and the Duke Blue Devils because Louisville has fallen off.
- 14:35Speaker 2: SMU is not what we thought they were. Maybe Wake
- 14:38Speaker 2: Forest can wiggle in there, but all of a sudden
- 14:40Speaker 2: the bubble is looking very different in the ACC other
- 14:43Speaker 2: than Miami. Yeah, I think it is. Well, let me
- 14:45Speaker 2: ask you guys this question again because I think we
- 14:47Speaker 2: discussed it at one point. If Miami does lose that
- 14:50Speaker 2: big matchup in South Bend and they're 11-1, but they
- 14:53Speaker 2: lose the ACC championship game, where do you put them?
- 14:55Speaker 1: So that puts them 11-2 with probably no ranked wins. Yeah,
- 14:58Speaker 1: but the perception there is that they've got a playoff roster.
- 15:02Speaker 1: So I would put Miami as a viable at-large team
- 15:06Speaker 1: at that point.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I wish you could flip some of their home-and-away games.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I know we always do this when we look at schedules.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Duke and Virginia Tech on the road would look a
- 15:14Speaker 2: little different. At-Pitt would look a little different. But I
- 15:17Speaker 2: think they're going to be an 11-1, so I'll give
- 15:19Speaker 2: them that. There is not going to be another team
- 15:21Speaker 2: in the ACC that can get in.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Yeah, unless Miami loses the ACC championship game, automatic bid
- 15:27Speaker 1: for the ACC. This year it's different. If you don't forget,
- 15:30Speaker 1: the rules have changed. Your conference champions, regardless of where
- 15:34Speaker 1: they are ranked, They get in if you're the ACC champion.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Everything looks different week to week because, you know, we
- 15:40Speaker 2: go back a couple of weeks ago, we'd have been
- 15:41Speaker 2: like Louisville looks like a playoff team. We go back
- 15:44Speaker 2: to week one or week zero, Virginia looked like a
- 15:47Speaker 2: playoff team.
- 15:47Speaker 3: I agree.
- 15:48Speaker 2: But things quickly change. And to me, the ACC definitely
- 15:51Speaker 2: one team league.
- 15:52Speaker 1: One problem with getting two in for the ACC real
- 15:55Speaker 1: quick is if you look at Duke and Wake, all right,
- 15:57Speaker 1: so those are two teams that could finish with just
- 15:59Speaker 1: one loss, but Unfortunately for them, that one loss in
- 16:03Speaker 1: the regular season would be Miami, and then you would
- 16:05Speaker 1: have lost to Miami twice. So there's no way you're
- 16:09Speaker 1: getting in without winning the ACC championship.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I get that, and I think Wake and Duke
- 16:12Speaker 2: are both good, but I don't think they're good enough
- 16:14Speaker 2: to be able to go one loss.
- 16:15Speaker 1: But if Miami has beaten you twice, you're like, really?
- 16:18Speaker 1: I mean, this is a one-team league. The other perceived
- 16:21Speaker 1: one-bid league is the Big 12, where Heather Dinnich ESPN
- 16:25Speaker 1: has BYU in, and the bubble being Utah and Texas
- 16:29Speaker 1: Tech right now. I personally, in my opinion, Utah looks
- 16:34Speaker 1: to be the better team in that league right now.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I'd have Utah as the playoff team and BYU and
- 16:39Speaker 1: Texas Tech in the bubble.
- 16:40Speaker 2: I think what would be fascinating, let's say that Utah
- 16:43Speaker 2: and BYU, Utah, let's say they win the home game
- 16:45Speaker 2: in Salt Lake, and then they rematch. Now, I don't
- 16:48Speaker 2: know how that would happen because Texas Tech is going
- 16:49Speaker 2: to be difficult for them to find a loss with
- 16:51Speaker 2: the schedule. But if you had Utah and BYU matching
- 16:56Speaker 2: up again, I think you'd get two in.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Between the AC & C and the Big 12, the
- 17:02Speaker 1: Big 12 looks to be the one that has a
- 17:04Speaker 1: better option at two getting in. What would help BYU
- 17:08Speaker 1: tremendously is if they win this game next Saturday night.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, against Notre Dame.
- 17:13Speaker 1: If you've got a win in your pocket against Notre
- 17:14Speaker 1: Dame and don't win the Big 12, you've got a shot.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Okay, let me ask you a complicated question here. BYU
- 17:20Speaker 2: beats Notre Dame. They lose in Salt Lake. BYU ends
- 17:24Speaker 2: up going 11-1. Utah undefeated. Texas Tech undefeated. BYU's out
- 17:30Speaker 2: of the conference championship game. You could get three.
- 17:32Speaker 1: You've got to worry about the other conferences. They won't
- 17:35Speaker 1: get three.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I think they would get three in that scenario.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I don't think they would. I think the loser of
- 17:39Speaker 1: the Big 12. I think BYU would be in. I
- 17:41Speaker 1: think the loser of the Big 12 championship game.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Undefeated, undefeated?
- 17:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:45Speaker 3: Oh, no way.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Because of the conference, the strength of schedule. Group of six.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Notre Dame obviously in. Group of six. Boise State is
- 17:54Speaker 1: sitting there right now. The bubble, though. unbeaten North Dakota State,
- 17:57Speaker 1: unbeaten James Madison.
- 17:59Speaker 2: James Madison, somebody that we will talk about in a
- 18:02Speaker 2: couple of hours. You look at their schedule, James Madison
- 18:06Speaker 2: more than likely is not going to lose. With that said,
- 18:08Speaker 2: if Boise doesn't lose again, Boise would go in front
- 18:10Speaker 2: of James Madison. I think people forget James Madison went
- 18:14Speaker 2: last year with a loss. The only team they really
- 18:16Speaker 2: played was Louisville, and they still got to a college
- 18:18Speaker 2: football playoff. North Dakota State's got a really tricky game
- 18:21Speaker 2: in Vegas this week against UNLV.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Yeah, first time meeting ever between North Dakota State and UNLV.
- 18:27Speaker 1: That should be a good rivalry game moving forward. He's
- 18:29Speaker 1: not completing a ton of passes. But he's also not
- 18:32Speaker 1: throwing interceptions, and he's being productive. Jackson Arnold, the UNLV quarterback,
- 18:36Speaker 1: he's out of sight, out of mind because he's a UNLV.
- 18:38Speaker 1: He got such a bad start. He did. He did.
- 18:41Speaker 1: But he's playing better. It was not what we thought
- 18:42Speaker 1: week zero when everybody got to watch him and everybody thought, oh,
- 18:46Speaker 1: Dan Mullen, he's going to get the best play out
- 18:47Speaker 1: of Jackson Arnold. It was a bad start, Lance, but
- 18:49Speaker 1: he's turned it around a little bit. Now, he's still inaccurate.
- 18:53Speaker 1: He's not very accurate. He's still under 60% completion percentage,
- 18:57Speaker 1: but he's not turning the ball over.
- 18:58Speaker 2: It is a downgraded quarterback from Calandria last year for
- 19:01Speaker 2: Dan Mullins.
- 19:02Speaker 7: It is.
- 19:02Speaker 2: To what you're getting with Jackson Arnold. But I think
- 19:05Speaker 2: that game is fascinating because if North Dakota State is
- 19:08Speaker 2: going to drop a game, it's probably Saturday.
- 19:11Speaker 1: But you would give me Boise State doesn't lose again.
- 19:14Speaker 1: They're one loss to Oregon. Even if North Dakota State
- 19:17Speaker 1: or James Madison are unbeaten, they don't deserve to be
- 19:20Speaker 1: in even.
- 19:21Speaker 2: I would agree. I do think Saturday night on the
- 19:25Speaker 2: CW is another one of these games. We could get,
- 19:29Speaker 2: nobody really cares, but we could get a lot of
- 19:31Speaker 2: group six mix-up if UNLV beats North Dakota State, if
- 19:35Speaker 2: Fresno State beats Boise, which I think both are in play.
- 19:37Speaker 1: But didn't UNLV lose to Hawaii? They lost a bad
- 19:41Speaker 1: game after they lost to, didn't they lose to Memphis?
- 19:43Speaker 1: Hawaii's only got one win. Yeah. They lost to Memphis
- 19:47Speaker 1: in week zero. They lost to Memphis and they lost the, opener.
- 19:50Speaker 1: It seems like, does UNLV have three losses? They seem
- 19:53Speaker 1: like they took a bad loss.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I think they've got two losses. I'll tell you right now.
- 19:57Speaker 1: UNLV. Yeah, they've got two losses. They lost at North Texas.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Didn't just lose at North Texas, Jim. They lost 44-6
- 20:06Speaker 1: at North Texas.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Dead and buried.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Beat really bad. Don't even talk about it. The Big Ten,
- 20:12Speaker 1: obviously Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon look to be not locks,
- 20:15Speaker 1: but close to it. The bubble in the Big Ten
- 20:18Speaker 1: has sort of dissipated. I mean, there's USC still with
- 20:22Speaker 1: one loss. I have them very much as a playoff contender.
- 20:25Speaker 2: After that, But you think about how much it could
- 20:30Speaker 2: change this week. If USC loses at Penn State, they're
- 20:34Speaker 2: dead and buried. But if UCLA was able to win,
- 20:37Speaker 2: I don't think they will. But if UCLA was able
- 20:39Speaker 2: to go on the road and beat Oregon, at that
- 20:41Speaker 2: point you're like, damn, Oregon's probably dead and UCLA all.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Of a sudden. And Nebraska, if they were to beat Indiana,
- 20:46Speaker 1: could become a bubble team. But right now there's not
- 20:49Speaker 1: a lot of bubble. Yeah, I think we'll get separation.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I think Indiana's going to win.
- 20:52Speaker 2: I think Oregon's going to win. And I think what
- 20:54Speaker 2: we're going to be searching for is that fourth team.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I know you like Northwestern, but they've still got to
- 20:58Speaker 1: go to Oregon and Ohio State.
- 21:01Speaker 2: They're not a playoff team. I'm just saying they could
- 21:03Speaker 2: ultimately be the fourth best team.
- 21:04Speaker 1: You were making an argument. That's my point. You're making
- 21:05Speaker 1: an argument for them to be the fourth best team
- 21:07Speaker 1: in the conference.
- 21:07Speaker 2: The ranked teams this week, I think UCLA is going
- 21:10Speaker 2: to lose. I think USC is going to lose. I
- 21:12Speaker 2: think Iowa is going to lose at Washington. They're only
- 21:15Speaker 2: going to get three teams.
- 21:16Speaker 1: USC is your best bubble bet right now, to my
- 21:19Speaker 1: point here. And I was setting all this up to say,
- 21:23Speaker 1: That's good for the Big 12 if it's only three
- 21:25Speaker 1: Big Ten teams. That opens the door for two, and
- 21:28Speaker 1: that opens the door for five SEC teams if there's
- 21:31Speaker 1: only three Big Ten teams. Texas, Georgia, Alabama look to
- 21:35Speaker 1: be in, but LSU, Florida, Ole Miss, I don't know
- 21:39Speaker 1: how deep you go after that. Missouri. Missouri.
- 21:41Speaker 2: I think you have to.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Do you go Tennessee yet?
- 21:45Speaker 2: I will say this, though, and this is what's going
- 21:47Speaker 2: to be interesting because There's still, although the Big Ten
- 21:50Speaker 2: has won three consecutive national championships, there still is the
- 21:53Speaker 2: perception the media licks the SEC up and down. And
- 21:57Speaker 2: can you imagine if the Big Ten got three in
- 21:59Speaker 2: and they put five in the SEC? I think at
- 22:01Speaker 2: this point that is deserving. I think the SEC should
- 22:03Speaker 2: at least get five in and the Big Ten only
- 22:06Speaker 2: deserves three. But at the end of the year, how
- 22:07Speaker 2: much does that change with the committee?
- 22:09Speaker 1: And that's the way it was last year, right? It
- 22:11Speaker 1: was five SEC, three Big Ten last year, too, correct?
- 22:16Speaker 1: I mean, you had Alabama and Oklahoma playing head-to-head in
- 22:20Speaker 1: the first round. So many SEC teams, you had to
- 22:21Speaker 1: play them head-to-head. Seems to be where we're trending again.
- 22:24Speaker 1: A little bubble watch as we approach the halfway point.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Coming up at the start of our final two hours
- 22:31Speaker 1: on a separate link, the next round version of our
- 22:34Speaker 1: show today, our local two hours, we will look at
- 22:37Speaker 1: five surprises, five disappointments as we approach the halfway point
- 22:41Speaker 1: of the season. That's coming up. in the 12 Eastern,
- 22:45Speaker 1: 11 Central Hour, hour number three. For that, it's a
- 22:49Speaker 1: new link. And if you watch our show here on

- 23:11Speaker 1: come back, more of our college football discussion, including a
- 23:16Speaker 1: little talk about the Heisman. Who do we have in
- 23:18Speaker 1: the Heisman right now? And as Brett McMurphy always writes...
- 23:21Speaker 1: How come September Heisman favorites fade late, and will it
- 23:24Speaker 1: happen again this year? That's next on the next round,
- 23:28Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bet on Sporting State. All right,
- 23:32Speaker 1: let's do weather and traffic again, Brownie. Give us a
- 23:35Speaker 1: weather update before you tell us about Perfect 10 Mortgage.
- 23:38Speaker 1: The National Weather Service is updating some of the hurricane traffic.
- 23:42Speaker 1: And again, when we talk about this, they all say
- 23:46Speaker 1: this can change on a moment's notice. But... Based on
- 23:49Speaker 1: some of the data that they're getting from the planes flying,
- 23:52Speaker 1: a couple of the weather services are saying they now
- 23:55Speaker 1: believe this could be a faster moving storm than they
- 23:58Speaker 1: initially thought. A Friday event. Which could make it more
- 24:01Speaker 1: of a Friday night, Saturday morning event and have the storm,
- 24:05Speaker 1: the mass of the storm through Tuscaloosa by the time
- 24:08Speaker 1: you get to the kickoff. One other option, it may
- 24:11Speaker 1: have come up before I moved the game to Athens,
- 24:14Speaker 1: is A later kickoff? Like if you knew, if the
- 24:19Speaker 1: forecasters were like, look, there's a pretty big difference between
- 24:21Speaker 1: 6.30 and 8.30 at night. No, I think 9.30 kick
- 24:24Speaker 1: would be perfect for this game. Yeah, play at 12
- 24:27Speaker 1: after dark time slot. But I mean, you could see
- 24:29Speaker 1: that too, right? If there's like, hey, look, two hours
- 24:31Speaker 1: would make a significant difference weather-wise. Well, you get that
- 24:34Speaker 1: with just your natural lightning delays and stuff. Exactly. Or
- 24:38Speaker 1: power outages. Yeah, so you could avoid that. But anyway,
- 24:41Speaker 1: the takeaway from this is some of the early modeling
- 24:43Speaker 1: is showing that this thing may move a little faster
- 24:45Speaker 1: than they had initially thought, which could be perfect for
- 24:47Speaker 1: a nighttime kick. But the one thing nobody's talking about
- 24:52Speaker 1: that I will bring up, having done this a long,
- 24:53Speaker 1: long time, if it does become some kind of a
- 24:56Speaker 1: significant event on the Gulf Coast when it makes landfall,
- 25:01Speaker 1: there is certain security and police paramedics and stuff that
- 25:10Speaker 1: are important for game day operations that get called away
- 25:13Speaker 1: to more serious events down on the Gulf Coast that
- 25:16Speaker 1: could also impact the game as well. So it's not
- 25:19Speaker 1: just 100% the weather. It can be the aftermath of
- 25:23Speaker 1: landfall that could pull some things out of Tuscaloosa that
- 25:27Speaker 1: could make the game worse. be in jeopardy as well.
- 25:30Speaker 2: You guys have done night games coming back from Tuscaloosa
- 25:33Speaker 2: to Birmingham, and that traffic can get you to 1 a.m.
- 25:37Speaker 2: on 20. Can you imagine if they had a 9.30
- 25:41Speaker 2: kick and the game wasn't over until 1?
- 25:42Speaker 1: I mean, the most famous one was that Bama-Ole Miss
- 25:44Speaker 1: game back in 24.
- 25:46Speaker 2: Was that 8?
- 25:46Speaker 1: Was it 8.30? It was 8.30, and I think they
- 25:48Speaker 1: even pushed it back. I think the game before went long.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Because wasn't it on ESPN 2 or something?
- 25:52Speaker 1: It was ESPN or ESPN 2, and I think the
- 25:54Speaker 1: game before went long, as they always do. I think
- 25:56Speaker 1: they pushed it back to 8.45, and then the game
- 25:58Speaker 1: took forever. Yeah, I think it was mainly ESPN. It
- 26:00Speaker 1: was following up a... a 5 o'clock kick somewhere.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I just remember people were pissed.
- 26:05Speaker 1: And it was like, in and of itself, that game
- 26:08Speaker 1: was like a four-hour game, the Alabama Ole Miss game.
- 26:10Speaker 1: That was the Hugh Freeze Ole Miss team that pulled
- 26:13Speaker 1: the upset. It was a high-scoring game, so it took forever. Yeah,
- 26:16Speaker 1: a lot of passes, so you had some incompletions. Perfect

- 27:18Speaker 1: Mortgage in pursuit of a more perfect mortgage. We'll talk
- 27:21Speaker 1: Red River here in just a second. But if I
- 27:25Speaker 1: had a Heisman vote, my Heisman vote would look like
- 27:28Speaker 1: this today. It would be Jeremiah Smith, Keelan Russell, Mensah
- 27:34Speaker 1: from Miami, and CJ Carr. from Notre Dame. That would
- 27:38Speaker 1: be my four right now. What would be different for
- 27:41Speaker 1: your four, LT? What would your four be?
- 27:43Speaker 2: I would keep Jeremiah Smith at number one. Number two
- 27:48Speaker 2: for me would still be Mensah. He did struggle a
- 27:51Speaker 2: little bit more against a formidable defense. This is all
- 27:54Speaker 2: going to take care of itself in a little bit.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Keelan probably would be up to number three. And then
- 27:59Speaker 2: number four, You know, maybe still Colin Simmons, but C.J.
- 28:04Speaker 2: Carr would be right there.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Camario Taylor was popular on our list last week, but
- 28:08Speaker 1: the foot injury and the performance against Alabama has him
- 28:11Speaker 1: slipping a little bit.
- 28:12Speaker 2: It's going to be hard for Jeremiah Smith not to
- 28:13Speaker 2: win this.
- 28:14Speaker 1: Okay, more on that in a second. This is really
- 28:16Speaker 1: hard to do as a Notre Dame player, but C.J.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Carr is playing off-Broadway a little bit right now. It's
- 28:20Speaker 1: part of his problem. I mean, how many Notre Dame
- 28:22Speaker 1: games are you guys watching?
- 28:24Speaker 2: I mean, I watch Saturday.
- 28:25Speaker 1: I watch because it's 11 a.m. and it's Notre Dame
- 28:28Speaker 1: against North Carolina in the rain. Yep. He looked good.
- 28:32Speaker 1: The team didn't look as good as I thought they
- 28:33Speaker 1: should have.
- 28:34Speaker 2: But to your point, I mean, I think it was
- 28:36Speaker 2: like 3 million watched that game. It was a low number.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a low number for Notre Dame. And Notre
- 28:42Speaker 1: Dame is not playing big-name games this year. Now, they'll
- 28:44Speaker 1: play Miami, and three and four are both going to
- 28:47Speaker 1: be in that game. And that could knock one of
- 28:50Speaker 1: them out. Okay, Brett McMurphy writes that so many times
- 28:54Speaker 1: September Heisman favorites, like Jeremiah Smith is, burn out by
- 28:58Speaker 1: the time we get to the vote in December and
- 29:00Speaker 1: give out the trophy why does that happen and why
- 29:03Speaker 1: do you not think it's going to happen this year
- 29:05Speaker 1: well I don't think.
- 29:06Speaker 2: It's going to happen this year because we've been talking
- 29:07Speaker 2: about this guy for three years and I think for
- 29:09Speaker 2: the last couple of years people have considered him maybe
- 29:11Speaker 2: the best player in all of college football and now
- 29:14Speaker 2: he is just dominating with the numbers that are out
- 29:17Speaker 2: there and I you know at this pace the targets
- 29:20Speaker 2: he's getting like he wasn't getting these targets last year
- 29:22Speaker 2: and he was sharing a lot of You know, his
- 29:23Speaker 2: touches with Cornell Tate. But now, I mean, he's already
- 29:26Speaker 2: got 44 receptions. Does that lead college football? I think
- 29:29Speaker 2: it does. Yeah, it does. Duff is number two, along
- 29:34Speaker 2: with Gavin Freeman from Baylor. Auburn fans will remember him.
- 29:37Speaker 2: that gave Auburn hell in week one. But he's leading
- 29:41Speaker 2: in yards, receptions, and touchdowns. If you win a triple crown,
- 29:46Speaker 2: I don't know the last person to do that. Maybe
- 29:47Speaker 2: Larry Fitzgerald or Devontae Smith. But great receiving years where
- 29:52Speaker 2: Larry Fitzgerald probably should have won the Heisman. Devontae did
- 29:54Speaker 2: win the Heisman. And I just think when you establish–
- 29:58Speaker 2: the best player going into a season, he has this
- 30:01Speaker 2: type of season on a brand like Ohio State that
- 30:04Speaker 2: is going to be very much in the mix. There's
- 30:05Speaker 2: no way they're missing the college football playoff. It's just
- 30:08Speaker 2: going to be really difficult. Now, if Keelan goes out
- 30:09Speaker 2: and slays it the rest of the way, it's different.
- 30:11Speaker 1: The only major statistical category he does not lead in
- 30:14Speaker 1: is yards per reception because he catches so many footballs.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I mean, guys that are leading in yards per reception
- 30:18Speaker 1: have 12, 13 catches this year, right?
- 30:21Speaker 2: But still 19 yards.
- 30:22Speaker 1: 19 yards is amazing. And he's done it with 44 receptions.
- 30:26Speaker 1: That's what's crazy about it. So that's really the only
- 30:29Speaker 1: thing he does not lead in. Now, it's interesting. This
- 30:33Speaker 1: kid at Oregon State, we've talked about their offense a
- 30:35Speaker 1: couple of times. Jesse Legree, he's tied with him in touchdowns,
- 30:41Speaker 1: and he's not that far behind in yards.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Wait until second half of the show when we talk
- 30:44Speaker 2: about big surprises.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Yeah, but when it comes to voting for the Heisman.
- 30:50Speaker 6: Oh, no, no, no, no.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I'm just pointing out where he stands nationally, and I
- 30:54Speaker 1: just wanted to give a shout-out. to a freshman playing
- 30:57Speaker 1: at Oregon State who you want to talk about playing off-Broadway,
- 31:00Speaker 1: it's hard to find their game sometimes. I'd start with
- 31:03Speaker 1: the CW. You've got to know where CW and USA
- 31:05Speaker 1: are to watch Oregon State play. Yeah, I'd start with
- 31:07Speaker 1: the CW. Let's talk Red River here for a second.
- 31:10Speaker 1: If you can, Tyler, give me 14 and 15. Steve
- 31:15Speaker 1: Sarkeesian is getting asked about Texas and what have they
- 31:21Speaker 1: done so far in his eyes and where is Texas
- 31:23Speaker 1: right now going into this battle? as number one against
- 31:26Speaker 1: their rival Oklahoma. Here's Stark.
- 31:30Speaker 8: Steve, I know we've talked a lot about, you know,
- 31:32Speaker 8: offensive issues, special teams, etc.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Just through four weeks, what do you see this team
- 31:36Speaker 1: actually having done well, or at least to your liking
- 31:38Speaker 1: through four weeks?
- 31:40Speaker 7: Well, I think what we've done well is we've won, right?
- 31:44Speaker 7: I'd hate to be here and sit here and say, hey,
- 31:46Speaker 7: we've got all these great stats and punt returns for
- 31:48Speaker 7: touchdowns and all these things and be three and one
- 31:51Speaker 7: or two and two. So that's the first part. We've
- 31:54Speaker 7: won the games.
- 31:56Speaker 1: I feel like.
- 31:57Speaker 7: That we've had moments where we needed to be at
- 32:00Speaker 7: our best and we've responded at our best. And it's
- 32:04Speaker 7: easy to point to the fourth quarter of Ohio State
- 32:07Speaker 7: or it's easy to point to.
- 32:09Speaker 1: The drive.
- 32:11Speaker 7: In the fourth quarter against Tennessee to make it a
- 32:13Speaker 7: two-score game or the stops we've had to get defensively
- 32:17Speaker 7: in critical moments. To me, I see flashes of who
- 32:22Speaker 7: we want to be, but my biggest critique of it
- 32:26Speaker 7: all is the consistency of it all, right? And we
- 32:29Speaker 7: have got to be a more consistent football team in
- 32:32Speaker 7: general in all three phases, and I think we can be.
- 32:35Speaker 7: There's room for improvement even on the defensive side of
- 32:37Speaker 7: the ball. And so that's what we're pushing for. That's
- 32:39Speaker 7: what we're striving for in all three phases.
- 32:41Speaker 2: So I would say this. They came into this game
- 32:44Speaker 2: 3-2 last year. Everybody thought Oklahoma was going to win
- 32:46Speaker 2: the game. Texas wins the game going away. By the way,
- 32:49Speaker 2: Mateer was really bad in that game with three turnovers.
- 32:51Speaker 1: But he was injured. Yeah, well, that's what they say.
- 32:54Speaker 1: That injury's lasted a long time.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Ends up going 9-3. They almost get into a college
- 32:58Speaker 2: football playoff. I'm not saying Oklahoma's going to be able
- 33:00Speaker 2: to turn it around coming off the bye and do
- 33:02Speaker 2: what Texas did last year. But this game is very unpredictable.
- 33:05Speaker 2: The one thing it's very predictable in is since 2000,
- 33:09Speaker 2: the team that wins the rushing battle in those 26 games,
- 33:12Speaker 2: what do you think the record is?
- 33:13Speaker 1: Okay, say it again.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Since 2000, the team that wins the rushing battle in
- 33:19Speaker 2: this game, Oklahoma-Texas, what is their record in those 26 games?
- 33:23Speaker 1: So we've got 25 games. What's the record?
- 33:25Speaker 2: It's 26, actually.
- 33:26Speaker 1: 26. You count 2000. Yeah, you count 2000. 26.
- 33:27Speaker 2: You need a biscuit, man.
- 33:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I say the team that wins the rushing battle wins
- 33:34Speaker 1: it every time. 23-3.
- 33:37Speaker 6: 24-2.
- 33:37Speaker 2: And when you look at this on paper, I mean,
- 33:39Speaker 2: how can Texas not win the rushing battle in this?
- 33:43Speaker 2: The biggest problem is material and ball security issues. I mean,
- 33:47Speaker 2: not only three turnovers in this game last year, but
- 33:48Speaker 2: three turnovers in the awful turnover against Georgia, where the
- 33:52Speaker 2: game should have been 14-7. Instead, it's 21-0, and they
- 33:55Speaker 2: get landslided.
- 33:56Speaker 1: See if this sounds familiar.
- 33:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Oklahoma has to somehow create a run game for this
- 34:01Speaker 1: game this weekend. That was the big headline. They've got
- 34:04Speaker 1: to create a run game. To your point, statistically, but
- 34:07Speaker 1: Alabama did this last year. They struggled to run, but
- 34:10Speaker 1: so did Oklahoma. They're still searching. And apparently in the
- 34:13Speaker 1: bye week, Bo Bentley and Witt Bauer, Bo spelled B-O-W-E
- 34:18Speaker 1: and Witt. I don't know if that's your backup. I mean,
- 34:21Speaker 1: if that's your future quarterback at Oklahoma, they don't sound
- 34:24Speaker 1: I guess both of those sound cowboyish and Midwestern. Both
- 34:28Speaker 1: more so. V-O-W-E and W-H-I-T-T. Bentley and Bauer are the backups.
- 34:33Speaker 1: They got some reps with the ones. Do you make
- 34:35Speaker 1: a switch at any point?
- 34:36Speaker 2: I don't know if you can because much like Michigan
- 34:39Speaker 2: and the money they've got invested in Bryce Underwood, Venables, Oklahoma...
- 34:45Speaker 2: You know, what our buddy Jim Nagy, what they've got
- 34:49Speaker 2: invested in John Mateer is a lot of money. So
- 34:51Speaker 2: it'd be difficult. But if he continues to turn it
- 34:53Speaker 2: over three times a game, you've got to get him
- 34:55Speaker 2: out of there.
- 34:56Speaker 1: I mean, Tennessee's doing this with freshmen. They're doing this
- 35:00Speaker 1: with young guys, not guys that are established in the program.
- 35:02Speaker 1: So there is a difference in doing it. But you
- 35:06Speaker 1: almost have to applaud Heupel, right, for saying, I'm going
- 35:09Speaker 1: to do this quickly. I'm not going to let this fester.
- 35:13Speaker 1: I feel like Venables has let this fester so long, Lance.
- 35:15Speaker 1: You're kind of in the situation you're talking about where
- 35:18Speaker 1: you've almost waited too long to make a change. Like
- 35:20Speaker 1: if you had done this last year when Mateer was struggling,
- 35:26Speaker 1: maybe it's a little easier to do it now. You
- 35:28Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? I've done it once before. It's
- 35:29Speaker 1: easier to do it now. But you stuck with him
- 35:31Speaker 1: and stuck with him and stuck with him and stuck
- 35:32Speaker 1: with him. At some point, have you waited too long
- 35:34Speaker 1: to make a change?
- 35:35Speaker 2: You know the last time Oklahoma scored a touchdown in
- 35:37Speaker 2: this matchup? It's kind of crazy. It was the fourth
- 35:42Speaker 2: quarter of 2023. The last two games, they have not
- 35:45Speaker 2: scored a touchdown against Texas in this matchup.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Wow. What was the other 2023 stat you gave us
- 35:50Speaker 1: a moment ago? Somebody else had not done something since 2023.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Florida State, it was Florida State.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, they hadn't won on the road.
- 35:56Speaker 1: Hadn't won on the road since 2023. And Oklahoma's not
- 35:59Speaker 1: scored a touchdown on Texas since then either. Oklahoma and
- 36:03Speaker 1: Texas is more amazing. Well, Florida State's played a lot
- 36:05Speaker 1: more road games.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I also didn't realize Hollywood Smothers started his career at Oklahoma. Now,
- 36:12Speaker 2: I remember him playing a ton at NC State, but
- 36:14Speaker 2: he actually started at Oklahoma State. Obviously, Parker Livingstone going
- 36:17Speaker 2: from Texas to Oklahoma. So you've got some storylines in this.
- 36:20Speaker 2: I'm just fascinated to see if Oklahoma's offense can do anything.
- 36:24Speaker 2: We say this every week, and they can't, but they're
- 36:26Speaker 2: coming off a bye, and this is the moment. This
- 36:28Speaker 2: thing completely implodes on Venables if they can't do anything Saturday.
- 36:33Speaker 1: On the other side, here's Brent Venables talking about John Mateer.
- 36:41Speaker 1: First of all, can you just punch up the screenshot here?
- 36:44Speaker 1: This is what scared people about when we started saying
- 36:46Speaker 1: we're going to put patches on uniforms. We thought it
- 36:49Speaker 1: would be this size. Like you'd see a pilot or
- 36:51Speaker 1: a Tyson logo and it'd be that big on the uniform.
- 36:54Speaker 1: They love that Jumpman logo, man.
- 36:56Speaker 2: I'm not a big fan of the Jumpman logo.
- 36:57Speaker 1: I mean, I just, I don't get why Oklahoma features
- 37:00Speaker 1: it so heavily. Like there are times where.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Can't do it in basketball.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Venables is only wearing a Jumpman logo. He's not even
- 37:06Speaker 1: wearing an Oklahoma logo. That's a big one. I'm going
- 37:10Speaker 1: to say that... I'm going to tap down my comments
- 37:14Speaker 1: about Jumpman Logo, just in case one ends up being
- 37:17Speaker 1: on a program near you very soon. Just in case.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Just in case. Have you heard something? No, I'm just
- 37:23Speaker 1: saying just in case.
- 37:24Speaker 2: That's a yes.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I don't want to say I'm anti-Jumpman. That was very
- 37:29Speaker 1: specific for you. I just know how my world works.
- 37:34Speaker 1: If I say I don't like the Jumpman logo, then
- 37:36Speaker 1: all of a sudden it ends up Alabama becomes a
- 37:39Speaker 1: Jumpman school next week.
- 37:40Speaker 2: But you can still dislike it.
- 37:43Speaker 1: If you guys think that this is a prominent display
- 37:46Speaker 1: of the Jumpman logo, you should play one of these
- 37:48Speaker 1: Bob Chesney sound bites in a minute. Oh, he does.
- 37:51Speaker 1: They got the Jumpman too. Okay. We'll do that. He's
- 37:53Speaker 1: got it around his neck. It's a gold chain. Anyway,
- 37:59Speaker 1: here's Brent Venables on John Mateer.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Again, a guy that loves to compete. He cares about
- 38:06Speaker 3: being a great teammate, being the leader of our football team,
- 38:10Speaker 3: playing well. You know, he carries, again, a heavy weight
- 38:15Speaker 3: when it comes to that great self-awareness, doesn't have his
- 38:18Speaker 3: head in the sand and cares about his opportunity and
- 38:22Speaker 3: certainly cares about, you know, representing a place like Oklahoma
- 38:26Speaker 3: quarterback is a big deal. And nobody's more disappointed, you know,
- 38:31Speaker 3: in not playing up to the standard that he wants to.
- 38:36Speaker 3: He certainly is capable of and certainly what, you know,
- 38:39Speaker 3: the University of Oklahoma has been used to over a
- 38:42Speaker 3: long period of time. But his best football has been
- 38:46Speaker 3: really good, and we've got to help him play a
- 38:49Speaker 3: little more consistent. Everybody around him has.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Got to play better.
- 38:51Speaker 3: And again, don't press as much as anything else.
- 38:57Speaker 1: I think he plays better this weekend. He's got to
- 39:00Speaker 1: play better. He can't get much worse. This is the
- 39:03Speaker 1: quarterback you want playing backyard ball this weekend.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Oh, I agree, yeah. And look, he's going to have
- 39:09Speaker 2: to improvise, make some crazy plays against a Texas defense
- 39:12Speaker 2: that's really been lights out.
- 39:13Speaker 1: He's got to dodge Colin Simmons once or twice.
- 39:17Speaker 2: I know you already teased it in the second half
- 39:19Speaker 2: of the show. We're going to do disappointments and surprises.
- 39:22Speaker 2: But I've got some Oklahoma numbers that are really going
- 39:25Speaker 2: to surprise you.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Okay and that's in that segment yeah that'll be the
- 39:28Speaker 1: first thing we do uh coming up in our next
- 39:31Speaker 1: segment um i mean in our next show which starts
- 39:34Speaker 1: at uh 12 eastern 11 central two hours um when
- 39:38Speaker 1: we're not on sporting state uh coming up i need
- 39:41Speaker 1: to name that second show the guys in the back
- 39:43Speaker 1: always laugh at me when i try to explain what's
- 39:45Speaker 1: your call the second half of the next round the
- 39:47Speaker 1: second half of the next round okay It's not as
- 39:49Speaker 1: creative as I wanted, Brown, but it's just one of
- 39:51Speaker 1: those days for you.
- 39:51Speaker 8: What would you like to call it? People know us
- 39:53Speaker 8: as the next round.
- 39:54Speaker 1: I know, but we're the next round here, too, on
- 39:56Speaker 1: Sporting State.
- 39:58Speaker 8: So then we're just the next round, but on the
- 40:01Speaker 8: next round.
- 40:01Speaker 1: Yeah, which doesn't sound good either. You see why it
- 40:04Speaker 1: gets confusing. I get tongue-tied every day when I try
- 40:06Speaker 1: to explain it, that there's two more hours of the
- 40:10Speaker 1: next round. But it's not a separate link. It's not
- 40:13Speaker 1: on this platform. It can be confusing at times. To explain,
- 40:18Speaker 1: but it's not confusing to do. You just wait, set
- 40:20Speaker 1: your alerts, and all of a sudden, boom, you click
- 40:22Speaker 1: on it.
- 40:22Speaker 8: That's right.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Very easy.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Brooks just buried his head. We're making it as easy
- 40:26Speaker 1: as we can for you. Not confusing at all.
- 40:29Speaker 8: It's complicated, but it's easy.
- 40:31Speaker 6: Because Jim will start to explain, and then he'll just
- 40:34Speaker 6: realize that he's at a point where he's just saying
- 40:37Speaker 6: words that doesn't really attach meaning to any of them.
- 40:41Speaker 6: It's like, all right, how do I just.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Get through this? You know how to do it? Let's
- 40:44Speaker 1: go to break. At Next Round Live. At Next Round Live. Anywhere.
- 40:47Speaker 1: And give us a thumbs up. Filler. Those are called
- 40:49Speaker 1: filler words. Those are great words. Next Round Live. Give
- 40:52Speaker 1: us a thumbs up. Subscribe. We go to the locker
- 40:54Speaker 1: room there at 1059. Come back out after a three-minute halftime.
- 40:56Speaker 1: That's right. Second half? Second half. Second half, next round.
- 41:03Speaker 1: All right. The first round and the next round. How
- 41:06Speaker 1: about that? The chat room is open for suggestions. That's
- 41:09Speaker 1: what you want. Sometimes those people are brilliant, like Daniel Byers,
- 41:13Speaker 1: by the way. In his three, his Guaranteed Friday, one
- 41:18Speaker 1: of his three was football game will be delayed or canceled.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Here we go. Daniel Byers right here.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Bold prediction.
- 41:27Speaker 1: One hurricane will change schedules for some teams. We've got
- 41:30Speaker 1: a new update. I don't think that's going to happen.
- 41:32Speaker 1: I don't either. Texas Tech won't make the playoffs. Trending
- 41:36Speaker 1: in that direction in my heart too, Daniel. A coach
- 41:39Speaker 1: who won a championship will retire. Dabo. He was afraid
- 41:43Speaker 1: to write Dabo there. Dabo was one of mine. We
- 41:47Speaker 1: need to.
- 41:47Speaker 2: Circle that one and bring it back every year we're
- 41:49Speaker 2: doing this show moving forward. If he drills all three
- 41:52Speaker 2: of those.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Well, I hope he's wrong about the hurricane. Save Daniel
- 41:56Speaker 1: right there. Save that screenshot.
- 41:58Speaker 2: It could be Appalachian State next week.
- 41:59Speaker 1: It could be. Jim, are you a big ESPN classic fan?
- 42:03Speaker 1: Does that still exist? I used to be.
- 42:04Speaker 2: It's just not. It's been sunsetted by ESPN.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Okay. Sunsetted is a fancy word. Wow, look at Brooks. Wow, sunsetted.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Is that a term in the industry? Sunsetted? Or is
- 42:15Speaker 1: that what you guys are about to, have y'all been
- 42:17Speaker 1: discussing that in meetings about me? Let's sunset Jim.
- 42:21Speaker 2: I said bullet to head and they were like, we
- 42:23Speaker 2: need to go a little more subtle.
- 42:24Speaker 1: We need to sunset Jim. The reason I asked that
- 42:27Speaker 1: is someone said that we could call it TNR classic
- 42:29Speaker 1: the last two hours. Somebody said TNR double shot. Jay
- 42:37Speaker 1: says next round jump man.
- 42:40Speaker 8: Zach says the jump around.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Technically, I love the jump, man, by the way.
- 42:44Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure there's a podcast called The Jump Around
- 42:46Speaker 2: in Wisconsin.
- 42:46Speaker 1: No, let's not do that. When we come back, if
- 42:50Speaker 1: Tyler and Forrester looked at their phones, I sent them
- 42:53Speaker 1: a link. We're going to live look at the foods
- 42:56Speaker 1: at the Texas State Fair, the new foods, and we'll
- 42:59Speaker 1: do it live. You don't have to cut anything, prepare anything.
- 43:01Speaker 1: We'll just throw it on the screen. We'll do it raw.
- 43:04Speaker 1: We'll raw dog it when we come back on the
- 43:07Speaker 1: next round. Next round raw dog coming up later. Back
- 43:11Speaker 1: with you on the next round, presented by Hard Rock
- 43:14Speaker 1: Bet on Sport and State. Tyler, just like yesterday, the
- 43:18Speaker 1: power surge we had over the weekend destroyed our clock
- 43:21Speaker 1: in here. So if you'll give us a one-minute left
- 43:24Speaker 1: in the show music, Ben, and count us down to
- 43:25Speaker 1: the end of the show, that'll help us tremendously. Hard
- 43:28Speaker 1: out here for those that watch us that are behind
- 43:31Speaker 1: the scenes. We want to talk about the State Fair
- 43:33Speaker 1: of Texas and the new food they have there. It's a.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Is the game a backdrop to the State Fair of Texas,
- 43:41Speaker 1: or is the State Fair of Texas a backdrop to Oklahoma, Texas?
- 43:43Speaker 2: Well, it depends if you're a kid or a grandmother
- 43:46Speaker 2: who doesn't care about football. Right. I think for anybody
- 43:48Speaker 2: who cares about football, I think Texas State Fair is
- 43:51Speaker 2: a backdrop to that.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's a great question. I don't know,
- 43:55Speaker 1: because the fair lasts for a full month, I believe, there. Yeah,
- 43:59Speaker 1: like they, our buddy Tom Hart sent out a video
- 44:04Speaker 1: last night that a ring toss caught on fire, and
- 44:07Speaker 1: you could see the smoke from driving down the interstate
- 44:11Speaker 1: from wherever the state fair was.
- 44:12Speaker 2: It's going to be black smoke with those rubber rings, right?
- 44:15Speaker 1: It literally was black smoke. The cowboy burned one year.
- 44:18Speaker 1: You remember that big cowboy out front? Like Burning Man.
- 44:20Speaker 1: When you get all.
- 44:22Speaker 2: This grease and people that are drinking, they're probably working it.
- 44:25Speaker 2: I've always wanted to go. I cannot believe none of
- 44:28Speaker 2: us have ever been to this camp.
- 44:29Speaker 1: I've never been. Me either. Well, with this platform that
- 44:32Speaker 1: we're on now, Sporting State, Let's just make a plan.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Let's do it next year, 2027. And I love the
- 44:38Speaker 1: fact that it's a 2.30 game now. Yeah, it's not
- 44:40Speaker 1: the 11 a.m.
- 44:41Speaker 2: I don't like the 11 o'clock.
- 44:42Speaker 1: But the benefit is that it could be an 11 a.m.
- 44:44Speaker 1: and then we could go camp and watch football all day.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Or we could get up and do an 8 or
- 44:49Speaker 2: 9 o'clock show and go to the game.
- 44:51Speaker 1: Yeah, go to the game and then go watch football
- 44:53Speaker 1: all day. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyway, there's food. Food's a
- 44:56Speaker 1: part of it. And every year there's new foods. This
- 45:00Speaker 1: is the website, State Fair of Texas. I think it's bigtex.com,
- 45:03Speaker 1: bigtex.com if you want to go check it out. 3D
- 45:06Speaker 1: Fruit Ice Cream. Yummy ice cream brings you ice cream
- 45:12Speaker 1: dreams to life. Ice cream is dipped in thin chocolate
- 45:16Speaker 1: shells shaped like a peach or a mango. Refreshing, delicious,
- 45:20Speaker 1: escape from the summer heat for just seven coupons.
- 45:23Speaker 6: The funny thing about this is it's not even unique
- 45:26Speaker 6: to the Texas State Fair. If you go into any
- 45:29Speaker 6: Asian supermarket, you'll see these in every flavor.
- 45:33Speaker 1: You actually see some Asian writing there. Oh, thanks, Tyler.
- 45:39Speaker 1: You're welcome. Go ahead, Tyler.
- 45:41Speaker 2: This is kind of like mochi, right?
- 45:44Speaker 8: Yeah, it's kind of like a mochi ice cream.
- 45:47Speaker 2: That stuff's good.
- 45:48Speaker 1: All Shook Up is the next one there.
- 45:50Speaker 2: That is.
- 45:52Speaker 1: A wild blend of creamy banana pudding ice cream and
- 45:55Speaker 1: rich peanut butter sauce spun into the ultimate milkshake. Yeah,
- 45:58Speaker 1: I'd try that. I'm not a big peanut butter guy,
- 46:00Speaker 1: but that banana pudding hooked me.
- 46:01Speaker 2: I bet it's incredible, but that seems like one of
- 46:04Speaker 2: those you knock it out, you're done for the day.
- 46:07Speaker 1: That does seem heavy. There's peanut butter cookies there, and
- 46:10Speaker 1: a thick, crispy slice of bacon is in there somewhere. Interesting.
- 46:14Speaker 8: It looks like they used Nutter Butters for.
- 46:16Speaker 1: The top as well. They did. They did, in fact,
- 46:18Speaker 1: do that. The next one over there is the Buffalo.
- 46:21Speaker 1: These are all new this year. Buffalo Breaded Cheese Curds.
- 46:28Speaker 1: Texapolitan Pizza. It's from Texapolitan Pizza.
- 46:31Speaker 2: Looks like sesame chicken.
- 46:32Speaker 1: It really does. Delicious cheese curds tossed in buffalo sauce
- 46:36Speaker 1: and served fresh, making for the perfect walkable fair meal.
- 46:40Speaker 1: That looks very good.
- 46:41Speaker 3: Yep.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Got to get your fingers dirty, so walkable I don't
- 46:44Speaker 1: know about, but it looks very good. Okay, here's where
- 46:46Speaker 1: it gets fun. Okay. The Butter Dip Toffee Crunch Nutty Bar. Oh, my.
- 46:52Speaker 1: I love toffee. Yep.
- 46:53Speaker 2: That thing looks like a nature zone. You bite it
- 46:55Speaker 2: and it explodes in a thousand pieces.
- 46:57Speaker 1: It's going to be a mess, but give me the
- 46:59Speaker 1: rundown here, Jimmy.
- 46:59Speaker 6: It looks like one of those sushi rolls where they
- 47:02Speaker 6: put all the flakes and the sauce on top.
- 47:03Speaker 1: The crunch rolls. I'll tell you this.
- 47:05Speaker 2: If family gets this to go, a kid's going to
- 47:06Speaker 2: get beaten in the backseat of the car.
- 47:08Speaker 7: Yep.
- 47:08Speaker 1: This is Nevin's Famous Ice Cream, drenched in creamy salted
- 47:14Speaker 1: butter and rolled in a mixture of toffee pieces and peanut,
- 47:18Speaker 1: creating the perfect creamy crunch. To finish it off, the
- 47:22Speaker 1: nutty bar is coated with a hefty drizzle of velvety
- 47:25Speaker 1: caramel and topped with the rich-crusted Ritz crackers. Enjoy this
- 47:30Speaker 1: new creation for just eight coupons.
- 47:32Speaker 2: I will tell you, it looks good, but it seems
- 47:34Speaker 2: like a lot of work.
- 47:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Like, that's a tedious, I mean, to put on the
- 47:39Speaker 2: Ritz cracker on top.
- 47:40Speaker 1: That is a lot. I mean, I'd give that one
- 47:43Speaker 1: a run for sure. They've got candy watermelon. It's a sweet,
- 47:49Speaker 1: fruity combo. A giant ice-cold watermelon slice the size of
- 47:53Speaker 1: your head, it says. Drenched in sour chamoy. Am I
- 47:58Speaker 1: saying that right?
- 47:59Speaker 8: Yes, you are.
- 48:00Speaker 1: And topped with a heavy sprinkle of tajin. tahini tahini
- 48:04Speaker 1: tahini's very good tahini is good i like tahini um
- 48:07Speaker 1: so that's a little sweet spicy i don't like candied
- 48:10Speaker 1: apples though is this like candied apples you think.
- 48:13Speaker 2: You probably had tahini on a margarita before it's good
- 48:16Speaker 2: i like tahini just sprinkled on chips or on my
- 48:18Speaker 2: mexican dishes at the restaurant.
- 48:20Speaker 1: The signature faux burger is new this year uh handcrafted
- 48:24Speaker 1: beef burger infused with authentic vietnamese faux spices and topped
- 48:28Speaker 1: with fresh herbs um bun looks terrible Yeah, I don't
- 48:32Speaker 1: know about this one.
- 48:32Speaker 8: Yeah, that's a mediocre-looking bun. But I do love a
- 48:35Speaker 8: nice bowl of pho.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Hey, there's no way the presentation. First of all, the
- 48:39Speaker 2: bun does. If you're going to put this much into
- 48:42Speaker 2: the presentation, AI the bun better. But there's no way
- 48:45Speaker 2: that thing looks like that.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Tyler's gentle correction there that it's pho, not pho.
- 48:50Speaker 2: Tyler's a foodie.
- 48:52Speaker 1: It's okay. The next one's my favorite so far. Chicken
- 48:55Speaker 1: fried steak biscuits. Chicken fried steak served on a warm
- 49:00Speaker 1: buttery biscuit topped with homemade bacon gravy. Oh, yeah. What's
- 49:04Speaker 1: not to like?
- 49:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 49:05Speaker 8: Should have been your breakfast this morning, Brown.
- 49:07Speaker 2: So I had one of these on Sunday at the
- 49:09Speaker 2: English pub I like to go to. It was the
- 49:11Speaker 2: chicken biscuit. It had the peach jam on it, and
- 49:13Speaker 2: it had an egg on it. But it was so massive,
- 49:16Speaker 2: I literally had to eat the sandwich with fork and knife.
- 49:19Speaker 1: I think you would have to with this one too
- 49:20Speaker 1: yeah I'm okay with fork and knife because I want
- 49:22Speaker 1: enough gravy do I I want to have to eat
- 49:25Speaker 1: it with a fork and knife I want to have
- 49:26Speaker 1: to sup up gravy skip skip the cotton candy cooler
- 49:29Speaker 1: the Cubano flatbread okay Um, it's a, it's a Cuban
- 49:33Speaker 1: sandwich basically on a flat bread. You don't like a
- 49:36Speaker 1: Cuban sandwich. Uh, it's okay. Yeah.
- 49:39Speaker 2: I had one a couple of weeks ago. It's I, I'm,
- 49:42Speaker 2: I'm not a huge fan that the bread's a little tough.
- 49:44Speaker 1: I actually think I would like that better than a
- 49:45Speaker 1: Cuban sandwich because it's a flat bread. Yeah.
- 49:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:48Speaker 1: I listen, I, I, I don't knock anybody's heritage and culture.
- 49:53Speaker 8: Uh-huh.
- 49:54Speaker 1: But isn't that just a souped-up ham and cheese sandwich?
- 49:56Speaker 1: It is, with mustard. Yeah.
- 49:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Pretty much. Pretty much it. I bet, Jim, if you
- 50:01Speaker 1: go to Cuba, you don't see these on every street corner,
- 50:03Speaker 1: so I don't think you're insulting heritage. Go down to
- 50:05Speaker 1: Deep Fried Bourbon Banana Bread.
- 50:09Speaker 7: Oh.
- 50:09Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 50:10Speaker 1: I love banana bread. Where are we? Let's go. Deep
- 50:12Speaker 1: Fried Bourbon Banana Bread. That sounds good. Those are balls.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Is that what that is? They just do it in balls?
- 50:18Speaker 1: Bourbon Banana Bread. Yeah, Deep Fried Bourbon Banana Bread.
- 50:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Yep. All the stuff you would expect there. Deep-fried ranch. Oh,
- 50:27Speaker 1: the next one. Is this ranch dressing? Is this ranch
- 50:29Speaker 1: inside like a wonton? This is deep-fried ranch. It's the
- 50:34Speaker 1: perfect breaded pocket-sized snack that fairgoers can easily take on
- 50:38Speaker 1: the go during the fair. Stuffed with creamy ranch sauce,
- 50:41Speaker 1: then deep-fried. these bites are sure to wake up the
- 50:44Speaker 1: taste buds. You guys ever get the crab angles or angels?
- 50:48Speaker 1: People call them different things. Angels is what I call them.
- 50:51Speaker 1: I've always called them angels.
- 50:52Speaker 6: I've seen them spelled angles at different places, and I
- 50:55Speaker 6: never know if that's just them doing a typo.
- 50:57Speaker 1: Only on Brown's headlines for Friday. That's actually a really
- 51:01Speaker 1: good line. I'll give you that. This is basically a
- 51:04Speaker 1: crab angle slash angel instead of cream cheese, it's ranch.
- 51:07Speaker 2: I'd rather have cream cheese.
- 51:08Speaker 1: I had two. Those are much better.
- 51:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Uh, I cannot say this word. My son, every time
- 51:13Speaker 1: I order it for breakfast, he corrects me. So it's
- 51:16Speaker 1: the deep fried, uh, Thai tea. However you say, uh, cake.
- 51:20Speaker 1: How do you say? Tres leches.
- 51:23Speaker 8: Tres leches.
- 51:24Speaker 1: Yeah. You don't have to put the fake.
- 51:26Speaker 8: It's three milk.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Yeah. But you don't have to put the fake, uh,
- 51:29Speaker 1: Hispanic flair on it. Tres leches. I always, always let
- 51:33Speaker 1: my son order it for me when we go to
- 51:35Speaker 1: breakfast because it's on the forever menu. That looks pretty
- 51:38Speaker 1: good there.
- 51:39Speaker 8: Brooks wants to know if you can roll your R's, Brownie.
- 51:43Speaker 1: The fettuccine Nutella crepe. Let's see. We've got to run
- 51:46Speaker 1: through these quickly. That is a crepe. Nutella crepe slices
- 51:52Speaker 1: into ribbons drizzled with Nutella, tops them with fresh seasonal
- 51:57Speaker 1: fruits and whipped cream. Try the sweet and savory dish
- 52:00Speaker 1: to see how it opens up the world. That's a
- 52:03Speaker 1: little bowl there. It looks like something my daughter gets
- 52:05Speaker 1: at a local joint. It's like $ 15. Ridiculous. Footlong fries.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Go to that one. These are a footlong deep-fried mashed
- 52:12Speaker 1: potato-style fry, seasoned or drizzled with your choice of sauce
- 52:16Speaker 1: and seasoning. So they're fries that literally are footlong.
- 52:19Speaker 2: How big is that potato?
- 52:22Speaker 1: It's long.
- 52:22Speaker 3: My gosh.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Where did the crow go? Think about the additives they've
- 52:27Speaker 1: got to put in that thing to make it a foot.
- 52:29Speaker 1: Fried butter chicken is down there. Just run through the
- 52:33Speaker 1: sheet there. Fried gobbler roll.
- 52:35Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 52:36Speaker 1: Give me the gobbler roll. The gobbler roll, hand-rolled and deep-fried,
- 52:41Speaker 1: cream cheese, fire-roasted corn, and a turkey leg.
- 52:46Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Yeah. God, I'd weigh a million pounds if I went
- 52:50Speaker 1: to this thing. Me too. That's why I want to
- 52:51Speaker 1: go is all the food. I know. I went to
- 52:53Speaker 1: the Greek Food Festival. They do have a mini smoked
- 52:55Speaker 1: turkey leg that you can get. I thought this year's
- 52:58Speaker 1: new thing was deep fried Reese's. Is it not on
- 53:01Speaker 1: there anywhere? I saw it on a drawing yesterday. There's
- 53:06Speaker 1: deep fried Twinkies. That's been there before. They've had that before.
- 53:09Speaker 4: All right.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Enjoy the big Texas State Fair this year if you're
- 53:14Speaker 1: going to the game down there. I hope Oklahoma wins
- 53:16Speaker 1: the football game, though, down with horns. When we come back,
- 53:20Speaker 1: we do the second half. Of the next round. Raw dog.
- 53:24Speaker 1: See ya.
