- 0:26into our study. Amen.
- 0:30Open your Bibles. Let's start in Second
- 0:31Corinthians chapter 5. Second Corinthians chapter 5.
- 0:36But we will be looking at a lot of verses today.
- 0:38If you're taking notes or you're a note taker, this is your day.
- 0:41We're going to be looking at a lot of truths throughout the
- 0:44Scriptures and the title and the topic of my message today is
- 0:49victory over your struggles. Victory over your struggles.
- 0:54I know the room is filled with battles, and I know the room
- 0:59today is filled with wrestlings. I know that the room is filled
- 1:03with defeats. But I also know the room is
- 1:06filled with victory. There is victory among us, even
- 1:10though there's also struggle. And as a pastor, I hear it a
- 1:13lot. I've heard it more and more over
- 1:16the last six, 912 months. Hey, how you doing, brother?
- 1:20How you doing, sister? I'm really struggling.
- 1:22And their whole demeanor changes and their shoulders go down and
- 1:26their hands hang down and their knees are weak.
- 1:29It's just like what Paul wrote to the Hebrews.
- 1:31Remember, he said when you see those with with arms hanging
- 1:34down, go and strengthen them. Lift up their arms.
- 1:37Or you see people with weak knees.
- 1:38It's not unusual, but I do see a lot of it.
- 1:43Because life is hard. It is very difficult.
- 1:47Jesus put it this way. In this world you will have
- 1:51tribulation and most believers stop right there.
- 1:55Like that's the only thing Jesus said.
- 1:57Oh yes, brother, I know tribulation, woe is me, it's so
- 2:02hard. But Jesus didn't stop there.
- 2:03Even in that thought, in this world you have tribulation.
- 2:06But what does he say? Be of good cheer.
- 2:09Why? Because I have overcome the
- 2:12world, it's so common and so heavy for some of you that
- 2:18you've started to take on that identity of living in defeat
- 2:22your whole life. And that's all you talk about.
- 2:25How hard it is, how difficult it is, how much defeat is in your
- 2:29life, how you're struggling. And living in defeat puts you
- 2:33closer to the edge of sin. Living in defeat puts you closer
- 2:38to the edge of discouragement. Living in defeat most certainly
- 2:42plunges you into a place, into a position, into a posture of not
- 2:47enjoying your relationship with Jesus.
- 2:51And today I want to help you with that.
- 2:54Before we get there, I do believe it's important to say
- 2:58I'm sorry that you're in a battle in your life right now.
- 3:01It's hard, it can be hard. We certainly have our days and
- 3:05our weeks and our months for sure, but your identity is not
- 3:09in your struggle. Can I say that again?
- 3:11That was an Amen moment. I'm going to prepare you again
- 3:14for you. Ready.
- 3:15Your identity is not in your struggle.
- 3:18That is not who you are. Your identity is in the victory
- 3:21of Jesus Christ. It is yours by faith.
- 3:25Jesus Christ defeated sin and death and made a mockery of the
- 3:29demonic realm. I'm watching today again.
- 3:32I've been in ministry long enough where I see these false
- 3:35things come in and out of the church and something is back
- 3:38again. Where instead of taking
- 3:40ownership for your life and walking in the victory of your
- 3:42life, there is a whole new movement saying Oh no, no,
- 3:45here's your problem. You need to be delivered.
- 3:48A demon is to come into your life and you're controlled by
- 3:50demons. Nonsense.
- 3:52You are a believer in Jesus Christ.
- 3:54You are filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 3:56Jesus made a mockery of the demonic realm.
- 3:59You don't need to be delivered from demons.
- 4:01You need to believe what God says about your life.
- 4:04Once you begin to believe that, you'll begin to walk in the
- 4:07victory that's yours. Surely the demonic realm is real
- 4:11and it harasses and messes around believers.
- 4:14But don't you think for a minute, in a minute that the
- 4:17devil made you do anything? The devil doesn't make you do
- 4:20anything. You choose to live the way that
- 4:25you live. Do you know it's possible for
- 4:28you to have a real hard situation in your life and still
- 4:31be filled with the joy of the Lord?
- 4:33To still enjoy Him? To have hope in your heart that
- 4:38you will see Him one day? In Jesus you are safe and in
- 4:43Jesus you are secure. You don't have to live a life of
- 4:48struggle. That seems to be the answer that
- 4:52keeps coming up in my ministry to so many where they're
- 4:56beginning to talk about their struggles and struggles and I
- 4:58just look them in the eye. Go, you know, you don't need to
- 5:00struggle. You can walk in victory if you
- 5:02like. No, you don't understand,
- 5:04Pastor, You don't. No, no, I don't understand.
- 5:06I don't know what exactly what you're trying to describe, but
- 5:09I'm telling you right now, you can walk in victory and not live
- 5:12your life struggling with the whole, all the rest of your
- 5:14life. You don't have to be identified
- 5:17by all the problems in your life.
- 5:19Now, before we move forward in our study, I think it's
- 5:22important to define struggle for a second.
- 5:25Just so we understand, there are primarily two types of struggle,
- 5:29one good, one not so good. So let me clarify what I'm
- 5:33saying so you don't misunderstand me.
- 5:36Let's start with the good story. Let me define for you in simple
- 5:39terms what I think is a good use of the word struggling.
- 5:44If you mean when you say struggle, if you mean this, then
- 5:48we can understand you're in a good place #1 struggle can mean
- 5:52that you're fighting the good fight of faith and you're
- 5:56pressing in wanting to move forward in your walk with the
- 5:59Lord. That's the good struggle.
- 6:01So you know, you get hit, you fall down, you stumble, you have
- 6:04to like, and you say, no, no, I'm struggling with this, but
- 6:06I'm walking a victory pastor. I'm, I'm fighting the good fight
- 6:09of faith. That's a good struggle.
- 6:11But most of the time, that's actually not how the word is
- 6:14being used. It's being used in well #2 the
- 6:19negative side of struggle. The negative side of struggle
- 6:22you can define as this. You're battling an ongoing sin
- 6:26that you won't forsake. And you call that struggle.
- 6:32Well, you know, Pastor, I'm just struggling with this addiction.
- 6:35I know. But God's giving you the
- 6:36victory. No, you don't understand.
- 6:38I'm struggling with it. But God's giving you the
- 6:40victory. You're already have victory.
- 6:42All you need to do is believe God and forsake sin.
- 6:45Well, you know, and, and it's interesting because as I'm
- 6:48ministering, I really, I, I look back 25 years here.
- 6:52I was eight years in the church that I came from.
- 6:54I was in ministry there probably seven of those eight years.
- 6:58To this day, I haven't had anyone come up after a service
- 7:02call the radio program. Any I've never experienced this
- 7:04where someone will come up and say, hey, pastor, I just want
- 7:06to, you know, I'm struggling. Well, really, bro, what are you
- 7:08struggling with? Well, you know, I'm just
- 7:09struggling with robbing a bank. You know, I robbed one yesterday
- 7:13and I just like so nervous and I saw there's a bank next door and
- 7:16I'm just going to head over there because I'm struggling
- 7:19with robbing a bank. Nobody struggles with robbing a
- 7:21bank or I also, you know, I'm struggling, pastor, I, I just
- 7:26struggle with punching people in the jaw.
- 7:28OK, let me step back three steps.
- 7:30All right, let's. What do you mean you're
- 7:32struggling with people punching people in the jaw?
- 7:34Nobody really struggles with that.
- 7:36They struggle with things that they like and they choose and
- 7:44they call that a struggle. That's not a struggle, friend.
- 7:49That's not struggling. Remember, you are engaged in a
- 7:52spiritual battle and most of the time it's a battle for the mind,
- 7:58for what you believe. You can be sure that what you
- 8:01believe will always 100% determine your behavior, which
- 8:08helps me as a pastor minister to you because I don't know your
- 8:12heart, I don't know your heart, I'll never know your heart.
- 8:15But I can watch your behavior and I can work backwards from
- 8:18your behavior and I can tell you what you believe.
- 8:21No, pastor, you can't do, No, I can.
- 8:24I really can. For example, if right now, in
- 8:28this moment, the light started flashing from the fire alarms,
- 8:32the noise started beeping through the room and you saw
- 8:36smoke coming from that side of the building and you did not get
- 8:41up and leave and exit the room, I can tell you, you don't
- 8:45believe there's a real fire. You don't believe it.
- 8:48You can see it, but you don't really believe it.
- 8:50You go keep teaching, pastor. We'll make it through.
- 8:52Don't worry. There's no real fire.
- 8:54But I'm looking at it and I can see the flames and I believe,
- 8:58and I say, let's go everybody out.
- 9:01I can tell that I believe that alarm, that it says what it
- 9:05means and means what it says. And the evidence of fire almost
- 9:1099.9% of the time means there's a fire.
- 9:15And when you value safety, you're going to run out.
- 9:17I can see that in you. And if your life is described as
- 9:22one long struggle, you're always struggling with the same sin,
- 9:25always struggling. I can work backwards from that
- 9:27behavior and I can come to the conclusion pretty close and
- 9:32accurate, that you're choosing to live in a way where you
- 9:36identify yourself by your failure and you've chosen not to
- 9:40forsake your sin, which is a dangerous place to be.
- 9:44You will never experience victory over your struggles
- 9:48until you learn to have a godly sorrow over your sin.
- 9:55Please, Church, don't call struggling.
- 9:57Don't call choosing sin your struggle.
- 10:02It's not. It's a lack of faith.
- 10:06It's living in defeat. It's living your life and
- 10:10unbelief. The battle is for your mind,
- 10:13what you believe. There is something about your
- 10:16life that you have not believed God.
- 10:19You are not believing God for the victory that's yours.
- 10:24And so the value of Bible study and learning is that as you
- 10:27learn new truths, your life and your behavior changes.
- 10:31That's why wrong doctrine and false teaching destroys lives.
- 10:35What you need to do is respond in faith.
- 10:38The Bible says that faith comes by hearing.
- 10:40In what? Hearing by the word of God.
- 10:43It builds your faith, strengthens you, adds to your
- 10:47life so that when you believe God, you act on it and your
- 10:52behavior follows your beliefs. I want you to consider a couple
- 10:57things. It is impossible.
- 11:00Consider this. It is impossible to struggle and
- 11:04rest at the same time. It's impossible.
- 11:08And remember Jesus invitation was to come unto him.
- 11:11All you are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you
- 11:14struggle. No, that's not his promise.
- 11:19His promise is rest and rest comes through abiding in him,
- 11:24drawing from Jesus, from his resources and his strength.
- 11:29Not by might, not by our own power, but by his Spirit, says
- 11:34the Lord. That's where strength lies.
- 11:36You can't struggle and rest at the same time.
- 11:41So some of your struggles, they exist because you don't have,
- 11:46you don't believe God that he'll give you the rest that you're
- 11:48looking for. Number 2, it's impossible, and I
- 11:53know this is simple, but I need to say it out loud.
- 11:55It's impossible to believe and not believe at the same time.
- 12:00You have to choose one. You either choose rest or you
- 12:04choose struggle. You either choose belief what
- 12:08God says about you and live that way, or you choose unbelief.
- 12:13But you can't have both at the same time.
- 12:17Consider thirdly, it's impossible to walk in the
- 12:20spirit. That's the strength of the Lord,
- 12:22and to walk in the flesh, that's a strength of yourself at the
- 12:25same time. You can't do both.
- 12:28You and I must choose moment by moment.
- 12:31This is a big issue for the frustrations you live with as a
- 12:35believer. You're so frustrated with your
- 12:37life that you're so frustrated with your experience as a
- 12:40Christian. This is one of the roots right
- 12:42here. You are attempting to live in
- 12:45two worlds that when you're trying to live in both worlds,
- 12:48you're not living in either. You're living in a life of
- 12:53unbelief. The truth is, is that we have
- 12:56been identified with Christ's life by faith.
- 13:01You are one with Christ, in unity with him.
- 13:04That has already happened as a born again believer.
- 13:06It happened the second, the millisecond that you were saved.
- 13:10You immediately identify with the power and the presence and
- 13:14the person of Jesus Christ. The holiest Holy Spirit immersed
- 13:18us in Jesus and now the life of Jesus Christ is my life.
- 13:24Listen to this Romans chapter 6, verse 5.
- 13:27It says, For if we have been united together in the likeness
- 13:31of his death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of his
- 13:34resurrection. Knowing this, this is an
- 13:37important phrase, Romans 65 and six, that the old man was
- 13:42crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away
- 13:46with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.
- 13:50That's a truth that you can live with right now.
- 13:52You are no longer a slave to sin.
- 13:56None of you in Christ are slaves to sin.
- 14:00But I love this phrase. The old man, the old man, that
- 14:05means something changed when you were born again.
- 14:08Something changed that all of a sudden now you have an old man,
- 14:11an old woman, and then new man and a new woman.
- 14:15Old not in age, but old as in past.
- 14:19That's the word here, not age past.
- 14:22I have the fortunate, it's fortunate for me that none of
- 14:26you, with the exception of Marie, maybe Henry and Maria,
- 14:30ever knew the old Ed. None of you met him.
- 14:32You're never going to meet him. You don't want to know why?
- 14:34Because he's dead. The old Ed is dead.
- 14:37You'll never meet him. Even if you got glimpses of
- 14:40weakness in my life or failure in my life, you will neither
- 14:44Have you ever met the old Ed? And by the way, you might be
- 14:47happy about that, but I'm happy I didn't meet you either.
- 14:50As the old man and the old woman, we were bad, bad in
- 14:57rebellion against God. Because of that, we need to
- 15:03learn to live in the newness of life using really simple terms
- 15:08here. If the old Ed was bad, the new
- 15:12Ed is good. If the old Ed was very bad, then
- 15:17the new Ed in Christ is very good, and I can believe that by
- 15:23faith. It's the work of God in me, not
- 15:27my own efforts, not my own energy.
- 15:31In Colossians chapter 3 and verses one through 4 it says, if
- 15:36then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which
- 15:41are above where Christ is sitting at the right hand of
- 15:44God. Set your mind, set your mind on
- 15:48the things above, not on the things of earth, for you died.
- 15:54Now obviously you're alive physically here.
- 15:56So this is not a physical death, this is a spiritual death.
- 15:59You died, some of you, you need to accept that by faith and have
- 16:03like a memorial service for your old person and just say goodbye
- 16:07to them. They have no control over you
- 16:10anymore. You are not limited to your own
- 16:12resources, your own personality, the way you were raised, all
- 16:15your bad habits. You are a new creation in
- 16:18Christ, as we'll see in a moment.
- 16:20You are a new person. You died.
- 16:22And now the life that you live, Colossians says, is hidden with
- 16:26Christ in God, so that when Christ, our life appears, you
- 16:30also appear with him in glory. Say this with great force and
- 16:35great fullness. Do you believe that Jesus Christ
- 16:39is coming again? Yes.
- 16:42Do you believe you're a new creation in Christ?
- 16:45Sometimes you do and sometimes you don't, but I want you to
- 16:50have that same confidence just as much as you believe in the
- 16:54second coming of Jesus Christ, that truth is equal to the truth
- 16:59that you're a new creation in Christ today.
- 17:03I want to help you see that. Turn over to 2nd Corinthians
- 17:05chapter 5 with me, Second Corinthians chapter 5, Four
- 17:10things I want to share with you today that will help you see the
- 17:13victory is already yours. You don't need to work for it.
- 17:17No energy or effort, it's already yours.
- 17:20By faith, I want to teach you that you have much more victory
- 17:24in your life than you've ever experienced.
- 17:26And the way to to get it and to enjoy it is by faith, Born again
- 17:31believer, you have been given the gift of victory.
- 17:35It is a gift to be received, not something to work for or to
- 17:39earn. Just as grace as a gift, so is
- 17:43victory and you can walk in the newness of life and his power no
- 17:47longer in your own strength. It's so glorious.
- 17:50Listen to what John says in first John five.
- 17:52He says this in verse 4. Whatever is born of God
- 17:57overcomes the world. Are you born of God today church
- 18:01then you can overcome. It's already happened.
- 18:04You overcome all that comes your way.
- 18:07How it says this is the victory that's overcome the world, even
- 18:13our faith. What you believe is very
- 18:16important. Who you believe in is very, very
- 18:22important. That you and I would know the
- 18:25Lord personally #1 you've been, you are a new creation.
- 18:31Second Corinthians chapter 5 notice verse 17.
- 18:36This is truth being read over you right now.
- 18:39You can receive it, it is yours. This scripture is true for every
- 18:44man, woman and child that is born again.
- 18:46Verse 17. Therefore, if anyone is in
- 18:51Christ, are you in Christ, then you are a new creation.
- 18:58All things have passed away. Behold, all things have become
- 19:03new. You know what the problem is and
- 19:06there are many problems we'll address in our Bible study
- 19:08today, but many believers are living like they're not saved,
- 19:12like you're born again. Experience didn't mean anything
- 19:16like it was just something that you went through kind of
- 19:18religiously, but it and conveyed nothing to you in changing your
- 19:22life. That's not what the Bible
- 19:23teaches. The work of Jesus Christ in our
- 19:26lives is so glorious. You are literally right now, in
- 19:29the moment I'm speaking, a new creation, a new person.
- 19:33All things have passed away. All things have become new.
- 19:36This is the work of Jesus in you.
- 19:40What no program could do for you.
- 19:42What no psychotherapist could do for you.
- 19:44What no self help book or television show or YouTube
- 19:47channel could do. What no false religion, no what
- 19:51what no effort and energy of humanity could ever do for you,
- 19:55God did for you by sending a son, Jesus Christ to the earth
- 19:59to live, die and rise again for the forgiveness of your sins.
- 20:05What man couldn't do, God did. Where there was no way, God made
- 20:11a way. You're a new creation.
- 20:13You could never do this for yourself.
- 20:15Never. I'm very familiar with all of
- 20:19these self help books before because before I got saved.
- 20:23I knew something was wrong with me and I just figured, hey,
- 20:26those guys are successful. They must be telling.
- 20:28They're going to tell me. And I'd read all these books and
- 20:31I'd do everything they said. Put your post it notes around
- 20:33the house and put it right there on the mirror.
- 20:35You're a good person and put it over here.
- 20:37Be kind. And all of these and none of it
- 20:39worked. It had no power.
- 20:41You want to know why? Because self help books have one
- 20:45fundamental flaw. Are you ready?
- 20:48Can't help yourself? It's impossible.
- 20:52The biggest problem with self help books is the word self.
- 20:56If you ever want to have the kind of help and gain the kind
- 20:59of help that you really need, you need to die to yourself and
- 21:04live to Christ. What these things could never do
- 21:09for you, God has done for you and is doing for you as you live
- 21:16by faith. Here's the problem.
- 21:19Yet another so few followers of Jesus believe this.
- 21:25Perhaps some of you. So you live as if you're not new
- 21:28in Christ. You live in a perpetual state of
- 21:32defeat and struggle, especially over those things that you
- 21:37refuse to give up. Some of you have been raised in
- 21:42such a way. Could have been the home you
- 21:43were raised in. It could have been a religious
- 21:45system, but you've been raised in such a way where you believe
- 21:49in order to experience peace, in order to experience victory, in
- 21:53order to experience anything that God has for you, you have
- 21:56to work and you have to work really hard.
- 21:59And if you have a little bit of, if you've made a little mistake
- 22:01or you have a little bit of God's peace, you got to keep
- 22:03working hard, hard, hard to get that peace and keep working,
- 22:06keep working. But you come to the conclusion
- 22:09that there's nothing, there's no work.
- 22:11You can't work enough. You're never satisfied.
- 22:14And you project that on the God like he's never satisfied.
- 22:17And it's simply a falsehood. It's a lie like the lie in the
- 22:22Garden of Eden. You are believing a lie about
- 22:24your own life. You remember God as the the
- 22:28devil came to Eve in the garden. She believed the lie.
- 22:32Her husband believed the lie plunged all of humanity into
- 22:35sin. And what was the lie?
- 22:37That God didn't tell them the truth, but He did.
- 22:42He told them exactly what they needed to know and they chose
- 22:45not to believe it. And here you are believing that
- 22:48the work is all on you and that if you just are good enough or a
- 22:54little bit better, then you'll see a little bit more victory.
- 22:58And if you just try hard and put the notes up there and get 1000
- 23:01accountability partners and take 60,000 courses, maybe one day
- 23:05when God is going, whoa, wait, wait a minute, why are you going
- 23:08all these places and not coming to me?
- 23:10I've given you the victory already.
- 23:12You would rather go to a book in unbelief and you would rather go
- 23:16to a friend in unbelief, and you would rather run to and fro in
- 23:19unbelief, living in a perpetual state instead of just forsaking
- 23:23sin and resting in Christ. The victory is already yours.
- 23:28Some of you, you do, many of you do believe this truth.
- 23:31And because you believe the truth about God, you behave
- 23:35accordingly and you're living your life in the newness.
- 23:39You're living a new life. It's pretty fascinating.
- 23:42I mean, every as we're studying the doctrine of grace through
- 23:45the book of Galatians, it's just so encouraging to me because I
- 23:48have to face my past. It has to come up constantly
- 23:52sharing my testimony, sharing what God has done, thinking
- 23:55about Marie and I coming up on another wedding anniversary, and
- 23:58just thinking about the miracle of our marriage, the miracle of
- 24:01our home, the miracle that we're even alive.
- 24:03I have to face these things. But the miracles all come with
- 24:07the pain and the difficulty. I can't do anything about that.
- 24:12I mean, I wish I could undo it, but I can't.
- 24:15But instead of beating myself up and instead of walking in guilt
- 24:18and shame and condemnation because the Bible tells me not
- 24:21to do that, you know what the Bible tells me?
- 24:22There is therefore now no condemnation for those that are
- 24:25in Christ. I claim that's mine.
- 24:27That's true. I believe it.
- 24:29And so when I look back on our past and go, yes, it's horrible,
- 24:31but look what God has done. And this is a perpetual state of
- 24:35struggle for some of you, because I'll ask you how, how
- 24:37are things going? Well, you know, I had victory
- 24:40for a while and then I fell again and, and I'm like, what do
- 24:42you mean you fell again? Why is that the place that
- 24:46you're going to take me? Why don't you take me to the 30
- 24:48years you've been walking with the Lord?
- 24:50Why don't you take me to the, the, the 40 days that you were
- 24:54strong? How about the three days you
- 24:55fasted and prayed? How about the time that God used
- 24:58you? Why do you always take me to
- 24:59defeat? And I'll tell you why, because
- 25:02you're living in defeat and forgetting about the goodness of
- 25:05God. You are measuring your life by
- 25:08your own good works or bad works, when that's not the
- 25:12measurement of God, The measurement of God over your
- 25:14life. And mine is his grace.
- 25:17And he draws us with what cords of love, desiring us to serve
- 25:22with him. Serve him and and enjoy Him, not
- 25:25with grudging hearts, but with joyful hearts.
- 25:29You're a new creation. There's true that we do wrestle
- 25:33with the flesh, but there's great victory in the Spirit.
- 25:36It's true. The old man shows up sometimes.
- 25:39It kind of scares us at times where, you know, maybe you were
- 25:42a person that had a big problem in your past with anger and God
- 25:46delivered you from it. You are not that angry person
- 25:48anymore. But then you did get angry and
- 25:51it scares you. You're like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 25:53wait a minute. What happened?
- 25:55Who's this guy? And this is where the Bible says
- 25:57in Romans you're to recommend the old man dead.
- 26:00You see now as a believer, when those things come in our lives,
- 26:04we have a remedy and that is repentance.
- 26:07We have a remedy. We can actually go to the person
- 26:10now, and we want to, we can go to the person and say this.
- 26:12These are powerful words. You might want to write them
- 26:14down. You ready?
- 26:15And we write these down. These are powerful words that
- 26:18will take you on the path of victory.
- 26:19You ready? You look someone in the eye and
- 26:21you say, will you forgive me? That's victory right there.
- 26:25The enemy has no power over you in the flesh.
- 26:29No power when you walk in the newness of life.
- 26:36In Romans chapter 6 and verse 7 it says for he who has died has
- 26:41been freed from sin. I want you to believe that you
- 26:47have been freed from the power of sin over your life.
- 26:52It is not that you will become sinless, not until we meet Jesus
- 26:58face to face, But you will sin less, a whole lot less, as you
- 27:04walk in the newness of life by faith.
- 27:09Again, another problem. You ready?
- 27:11I could already hear it in the room.
- 27:13I can already. Nobody's saying it out loud, but
- 27:15I can read your minds and I can hear it online.
- 27:19I can hear it in someone's car. I can hear it.
- 27:21But Pastor, it doesn't feel that way.
- 27:25Oh, now we're getting somewhere. It doesn't feel that way.
- 27:34You got a big battle with your feelings.
- 27:37I do too. I am a very emotional person.
- 27:43When I feel something high and exciting, I'm all man.
- 27:46I feel it deep. I enjoy.
- 27:49I love celebrations, I love to be excited.
- 27:53I feel it deep. There's no halfway for me, which
- 27:56also means when I hurt, I feel it deep.
- 28:02When I'm sad, I need to watch out for depression.
- 28:06It's just part of our makeup. I'm grateful that the Bible says
- 28:11that I get to follow Jesus by faith and not by feelings.
- 28:15Because here's the problem with feelings.
- 28:17You ready? Here's the problem.
- 28:18You know this. I, I'm going to say it to you,
- 28:20but you already know it. Feelings are real.
- 28:22Some of us feel them really, really deep.
- 28:26But feelings don't always tell us the truth about the
- 28:29situation. And we need to choose to match
- 28:34those feelings of failure, those feelings of fear, those feelings
- 28:40of never getting victory, all of the things that are lies against
- 28:43the truth of God's Word. We need to learn to match those
- 28:47feelings with faith. For example, some of you, you
- 28:51are not loving your wives as Christ loved the church.
- 28:54I just can't do it. Pastor, you just don't know who
- 28:56I'm married. I'm struggling with loving my
- 29:03wife. No, you're not struggling.
- 29:05You're choosing not to love your wife.
- 29:10Well, pastor, I'm just struggling with submitting.
- 29:16I don't, I don't know why I'm changing my I just want to
- 29:18lighten it up a little bit. It's a heavy time but some of
- 29:21the wives here I don't want to submit.
- 29:23I don't. I'm having a hard time just
- 29:24struggling with submitting to my husband as under the Lord.
- 29:27Not really your feelings. You might have been heard.
- 29:35You might also fear abandonment. There's a lot of feelings that
- 29:37go in in our marriages. But I do know this, if by faith
- 29:41I trust God, I can love my wife self sacrificially.
- 29:47I don't need a self help book for that.
- 29:49I have the Lord who will teach me to be the man that I need to
- 29:54be so that my wife will blossom and be the woman that God
- 29:58intended her to be, That God has put me in her life to help her,
- 30:03to help her grow. She didn't.
- 30:05She's not in my life to serve me.
- 30:06I'm in her life to serve her. That's what the Bible says.
- 30:10If I believe that, then it won't be a struggle for me.
- 30:13The struggle might be to die to myself.
- 30:15There's what might be a lot of struggles, but it won't be to
- 30:17love my wife as Christ loved the church.
- 30:19Why? Because I know what love is from
- 30:21Christ who died for me. And ladies, as hard as it may be
- 30:25for you to submit to your husband right now in this season
- 30:28of your life, you can look back to a very difficult marriage
- 30:31when it becomes when it was between Abraham and Sarai.
- 30:36And she had a faith in God that was so great that she was able
- 30:39to submit to Abraham, to Abram in such a way where she honored
- 30:43God. How?
- 30:46By faith, it wasn't the behavior of her husband.
- 30:50As a matter of fact, the behavior of her husband was the
- 30:52exact opposite of what you would expect from a godly man.
- 30:56What motivated and moved her? It was God and His faithfulness
- 31:03in her life, and she accessed that.
- 31:05By faith, I know the feelings are real.
- 31:08I live in them myself. I know that in discouragement,
- 31:13it's very easy to throw yourself a pity party and you know, you
- 31:19invite people to the pity party. Guess who shows up other pity
- 31:22party people. It's kind of a very difficult
- 31:26place to be, but I thank God for the men and women that would
- 31:29speak truth in my life because pain in my life has actually and
- 31:34feelings will do this. I'll just give you the
- 31:37perspective from my life, but you can fill it in for yours.
- 31:40Like feelings will cause me to doubt the truthfulness of God.
- 31:45And one of the doctrines, the one of the, one of the
- 31:48characteristics of the nature of God is his sovereignty.
- 31:52And let me tell you something right now, we all love the
- 31:55sovereignty of God when it works in our favor.
- 31:58Oh God, you gave me this job. Oh God, I thank you for this.
- 32:01Oh God, you're, you're so sovereign in my life.
- 32:04I trust you in my life. And then pain hits.
- 32:07Oh no, I don't like sovereignty. Something's wrong here because
- 32:11I've interpreted sovereignty is only good for me, but the
- 32:14sovereignty is only good for God and what He's doing.
- 32:18I don't know what He's doing Am I?
- 32:20I don't know why I don't know. But I do know God and I know His
- 32:25feelings. They will take me away from
- 32:28faith. I would rather trust my
- 32:30untrustworthy feelings than a trustworthy God, and that's
- 32:35something you need to hear today.
- 32:37It is not OK to replace faith with your feelings.
- 32:40And I would just add to that that you can feel really hard
- 32:44and really deep and still have faith in God.
- 32:47At the same time, you can trust God with what you're feeling
- 32:52right now. But here's what you can't do,
- 32:55church. This is the pathway of victory.
- 32:57This is what you can't do. You can't use your feelings as
- 33:01an excuse to sin against God. You will pay the price for that.
- 33:06And it's actually not your feelings anymore.
- 33:08It's actually your choices. You guys with me #2 Galatians
- 33:14chapter 2, verse 20. Galatians chapter 2.
- 33:17Not only are you a new creation, but as a new creation, you have
- 33:20a new life, new life. This is so fascinating, so
- 33:24glorious. It's so powerful when we think
- 33:27about what God has done for us, what we could never do for
- 33:30ourselves. Galatians chapter 2 verse 20.
- 33:34We looked at this last time I have been crucified with Christ.
- 33:41And by the way, I want to just walk through this real quickly
- 33:43with you circle the word crucified.
- 33:46It is not referring to the physical death that Jesus
- 33:50experienced in your life. What I mean by that is none of
- 33:53us died on a cross. None of us is hung on a Roman
- 33:56cross. None of us experienced the
- 33:58torturous death of Christ. So when we have been crucified,
- 34:03it is identifying with the crucifixion of Christ.
- 34:06And so if you want to understand this word, you can circle it and
- 34:09you can write the word next to it.
- 34:11Rendered inoperative your old man.
- 34:14You, you, when you were crucified, you rendered
- 34:16inoperative the reality of your old man.
- 34:22You can entertain him, you can bring him back, but you have
- 34:25been in The Who you were is not who you are, which is so good.
- 34:31So I've been crucified with Christ.
- 34:33It's no longer I who live. Christ lives in me and the life
- 34:37which I now live in the flesh. I live by faith in the Son of
- 34:40God. Why?
- 34:42Because he loved me and He gave himself for me.
- 34:45When you and I were born again, we were born to live a new life
- 34:49with new power, new strength, new everything.
- 34:52We're no longer our old selves. We reckon the old man dead.
- 34:56We live in new life. We we render inoperable,
- 35:01inoperative. The old man doesn't have any
- 35:03control over us. We are now under new ownership
- 35:07in Jesus, and the victorious Christian life is nothing less
- 35:12than the life of Christ being lived through the child of God.
- 35:15Let me repeat that the victorious Christian life is
- 35:19nothing less than the life of Christ being lived through the
- 35:22child of God. Any behavior that is not
- 35:26dependent upon Him living His life through US comes from our
- 35:30flesh. Let me define this.
- 35:32We'll get into a deeper when we go farther along in Galatians,
- 35:35verse by verse, but let me define this word flesh.
- 35:37Obviously there's a use of the word flesh in the Bible that
- 35:40refers to your skin. It refers to your human body,
- 35:44and that is the physical definition.
- 35:45There is a spiritual definition as well.
- 35:48I'm going to give you 2 thoughts with what it means to live apart
- 35:51from the resources of Christ, to live in your own strength.
- 35:54So when you think of the word flesh, I want you to think #1
- 35:57your old sinful habit patterns. When the flesh rises up, it is
- 36:03your response to something that didn't come from God.
- 36:07So, for example, of some of us, we got saved later in life.
- 36:10So what that means is we have years and years and years of bad
- 36:14sinful habits. Those weren't quickly broken
- 36:19because we have a new nature, but we have an old brain.
- 36:22Anybody have an old brand to give me an Amen?
- 36:24You still think the same way. God is transforming your brain.
- 36:28He's transforming your mind. We are in with the process of
- 36:31the Bible says, of sanctification.
- 36:34We're becoming more and more like Christ, which means we're
- 36:37going to sin a whole lot less. But we are not complete yet.
- 36:40We have not experienced glorification.
- 36:42We don't have our new bodies yet.
- 36:44So when you think of the flesh, it's just old sinful habits.
- 36:47They don't control you because the old man died, but they're a
- 36:51part of you. You got to reject them.
- 36:54Another way to think of the flesh is to think of it in such
- 36:59a way where you are leaning on yourself, leaning on yourself.
- 37:06When you think of the flesh, you're really refusing all that
- 37:11God has for you and choosing to live in your own wisdom, your
- 37:15own strength, your own bank account, your own everything,
- 37:19which those of you, your own good works, those of you that do
- 37:22this, you know exactly how limited your resources are.
- 37:26They run out so quickly. You wake up in the morning and
- 37:29you read that book. So you put a sticky note up
- 37:32there on your on your mirror. You're going to be, I'm going to
- 37:35be a good, you're a good person, Ed.
- 37:37I know. And you know, you just talk to
- 37:38each other in the mirror. I'm going to be good today.
- 37:41And then you get to work and she's still there.
- 37:44Uh huh. What happened to the sticky
- 37:47note? You were a good person in the
- 37:50mirror, but now you're being tested.
- 37:51You're not going to be able to pass the test in your own
- 37:53strength. You have to die to yourself and
- 37:56say, look, give me the strength to love this person for you.
- 37:59Doesn't matter what I think, doesn't matter how selfish I am.
- 38:01It doesn't matter how upset I am.
- 38:03None of those things matter because I'm on the earth for
- 38:05you, God. So I need your strength.
- 38:08You're agape. Which leads us to #3 you have
- 38:13new victories. New victories.
- 38:14Second Corinthians chapter 2 now verse 14 Second Timothy chapter
- 38:202 now verse 14 you haven't. You're a new creation with a new
- 38:25life that leads to new victories.
- 38:28Here in verse 14 it says Second Corinthians chapter 2 verse 14.
- 38:37Now thanks be to God who always circle that word always leads us
- 38:43in triumph or victory in Christ and through US diffuses the
- 38:48fragrance of his knowledge in every place Church as born again
- 38:52men, women and children, we are always LED in victory always.
- 38:58Which means this is not a passive.
- 39:02This is not a passive choice that we it just doesn't happen
- 39:07to us. If someone's leading us, what do
- 39:09we need to respond with? We need to follow if he's
- 39:13leading us and I follow the lead of Christ because it's
- 39:18counterintuitive, isn't it? When you're hurt, you experience
- 39:21pain. The counterintuitive leading of
- 39:23Jesus says forgive them. I'm not going to forgive them.
- 39:27Well then don't experience victory.
- 39:29It's your choice. Be in the flesh.
- 39:31You know, not only am I not going to forgive them, oh, I'm
- 39:34going to get vengeance. Oh, come on, man.
- 39:36Where did that come from then? Come from the Lord didn't come
- 39:39from His Word. That's not an act of faith.
- 39:41That's your flesh. That's your old simple habits.
- 39:44That's how you used to handle things.
- 39:46And how did that work out for you?
- 39:48It brought you to the end of yourself.
- 39:49Do you want to be brought to the end of yourself again?
- 39:52Then go ahead and rebel against God.
- 39:54But you want victory. Just follow Jesus, he said.
- 39:58Forgive him, love him, serve him, take care of them, be
- 40:02generous, on and on. It's so powerful.
- 40:05I need to follow Him. Romans chapter 6, verse 13,
- 40:09don't present your members as instruments of unrighteousness
- 40:12to sin, but present yourselves to God as being a lie from the
- 40:16dead and your members as instruments of righteousness.
- 40:20The sin has a way. This sin has a way of dragging a
- 40:23person down to the point where they're consistently living in
- 40:25disobedience and then they call that struggling.
- 40:28That's not struggling, it's disobedience.
- 40:34You're believing the lie and you're living in unbelief.
- 40:38Hearts are becoming conformed to this world and faith is being
- 40:42ripped off. We all have to deal with the
- 40:45world and stumbling sins, every single one of us.
- 40:47But thanks be to God, our encourager, the enemy's not
- 40:51wanting to deceive and destroy, but thanks to be to our God,
- 40:55because He always leads us in victory.
- 40:56Once we start following Him, we know we have the victory.
- 41:01One of the simple ways you can do that is just what whenever
- 41:04you're faced with temptation, what you and immediately you
- 41:07begin praying, you're already following the Lord.
- 41:09Lord, you see me, You see what I'm feeling you're like because
- 41:13again, I'm not naive in many ways and there are people even
- 41:19listening to me right now that are planning their sin.
- 41:24That's not struggle. It's disobedience.
- 41:29And so just call it what it is. Can you imagine if you started
- 41:31calling things what they are, how much you would change?
- 41:33Hey, brother, how you doing? Oh, I'm struggling.
- 41:36OK. Don't use that anymore.
- 41:37How you doing, brother? I'm just planning my sin, going
- 41:42to rob a bank tomorrow, you know, whatever it's like.
- 41:45Really. Yeah.
- 41:46This is something like struggling.
- 41:47And then all of a sudden, if you share the truth, you start
- 41:50hearing what am I doing? This is not me.
- 41:54What am I? Why am I thinking like this?
- 41:55Why am I even? I mean the reality of victory
- 41:59being yours is right here. He always leads us in victory.
- 42:02This is a picture of the Roman parade of triumph.
- 42:06After a general would run a win, a victory, he would come and
- 42:09have a massive parade and his sons would follow him, sharing
- 42:13in the victory. And the picture here is Jesus
- 42:16going to and fro throughout the whole world in his victory
- 42:19parade, and we get to follow him wherever he goes.
- 42:23There's victory. Jesus is not merely giving us
- 42:26victory, Church. He is our victory.
- 42:31He is our strength. We fight not for victory, but
- 42:35from victory. And quite frankly, we don't even
- 42:37need to fight. We just need to rest and he does
- 42:42what we cannot do. Psalm 98 verse one sing to the
- 42:45Lord a new song for he has done marvelous things.
- 42:49His right hand and his holy arm have gained him the victory.
- 42:52Proverbs 2131 The horse is prepared for the day of battle,
- 42:57but deliverance is from the Lord.
- 42:59First Corinthians 1557. Thanks be to God, who gives us
- 43:04the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 43:06Romans chapter 8 verse 37. Yet in all these things we are
- 43:12more than conquerors through him who loved us.
- 43:15Shall I go on? I don't need to.
- 43:17I've given you enough. You can look the rest up
- 43:19yourself. Powerful choose of the victory
- 43:22that so whatever is born of God overcomes the world and this is
- 43:28the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
- 43:32You guys, I taught you that earlier.
- 43:33Did you not remember it? This is what overcomes the
- 43:36world, even our faith. So you need to leave here.
- 43:39Believe in God today, which leads us to #4 not only are we
- 43:43new creations with a new life, with new victories, but we have
- 43:47a new power source. Remember what Jesus said, Acts
- 43:50chapter one, verse 8 to that group of the early church.
- 43:53Remember what he said? He says, don't you leave
- 43:56Jerusalem, You wait. The Holy Spirit's going to what
- 44:00come upon you and give you power.
- 44:04The Greek word there is Dunamas. We get our English word dynamic.
- 44:08It's going to be an unexplainable power.
- 44:10It's going to be a transformative power.
- 44:13Power to overcome, power to walk by faith, power to live the life
- 44:16that only Jesus desires because he dwells.
- 44:19Don't you leave Jerusalem. You have new power.
- 44:23There's a new power. You don't have to lean on your
- 44:26own understanding. That's why a person even today
- 44:30that is born again in this room in just a few moments has as
- 44:34much power as the Saint that's been walking with the Lord for
- 44:3750 years. The same power, the same
- 44:41victory, the same new identity, Everything's the same.
- 44:46What they don't have is all this baggage that we carry as
- 44:48Christians. Well, you know, I heard this and
- 44:52I watched this and I just read your Bible and pray Good Lord
- 44:55will give you strength and wisdom on how to live your life.
- 44:59Trust Him with your life. Live for Him.
- 45:05The victory is already ours when you're struggling, whatever the
- 45:08well, however you define it, claim the victory.
- 45:10You can claim victory. It's yours.
- 45:13This isn't, you know, I'm claiming victory because I'm
- 45:15going to demand from God. God says take what I'm giving
- 45:17you, take it, it's yours. Walk away with it.
- 45:21Can you imagine giving your kids like giving them the you had to
- 45:24go through? I remember years ago we were
- 45:25going all over the place to get our kids the toys that they want
- 45:28and they're sold out everywhere. And we did whatever we could,
- 45:30paid double, put it under the tree.
- 45:32Go. I don't want that.
- 45:32What? Whose kid are you?
- 45:36Your mom's kid? I'm sure.
- 45:37No, you're your dad's kid. You can say either one.
- 45:42But when you struggle, you claim that victory.
- 45:43You're a new creation with new life, new victories, new power,
- 45:46and it's impossible to struggle and rest at the same time.
- 45:51It's impossible to believe and not believe at the same time.
- 45:55It's impossible to walk in the Spirit and walk in the flesh at
- 45:57the same time. You must choose moment by
- 46:01moment. It's time today to choose right
- 46:04now as the Lord speaking to you. So Father, I pray as we go
- 46:08through this word together that you would have your way with us
- 46:10as a church, that you would reveal the victory of even the
- 46:14struggles that walked in the room today that are happening in
- 46:17a car somewhere throughout Denver.
- 46:19And maybe this is heard later on around the country, like you are
- 46:23ministering your word, watching online, catching a video as we
- 46:28send this to a friend, that there's victory, there's
- 46:30victory, there's victory. And it's not found in self help.
- 46:34It's in it's found in self sacrifice, dying to self
- 46:40following you Jesus where there's victory and today is the
- 46:44church is praying. If you're here and you've never
- 46:46received the forgiveness of your sins, we want you to settle that
- 46:50right now. Today you would say, pastor, I
- 46:54need to be born again. I want to be in a right
- 46:57relationship with God. If that's you, would you just
- 46:59stand to your feet? I want to pray with you right
- 47:01here in this room that today you choose to follow Christ.
- 47:05This is for new believers here. This is for someone that's never
- 47:08done it. God bless you.
- 47:09Who else would say that's me? Today is the day and we don't
- 47:13want to leave here without that invitation.
- 47:16God bless you on the side over here without that invitation to
- 47:20follow Jesus. The Bible says that Jesus Christ
- 47:23died for your sins according to the Scriptures and that he rose
- 47:28again from the dead. God bless you in the back
- 47:30according to the Scriptures. Do you know the Scriptures, the
- 47:34Bible, this book here I have it also says that we've all sinned.
- 47:37You've sinned. I've sinned.
- 47:40The idea of sin is that we failed.
- 47:43We have failed our Creator, but God has opened our eyes because
- 47:51in that failure, the Bible says that the wages of our sin will
- 47:54lead to death, eternal death. Painful.
- 48:00There's a whole list of things I could share there, but the gift
- 48:05of God is eternal life. God is offering you the
- 48:08forgiveness of your sins today, eternal life.
- 48:12Just take the gift. Who else would say that's me?
- 48:15I want to wait for you. So there's going to be a great
- 48:18outpouring of the Holy Spirit that I want you to be a part of
- 48:22what God's doing in our church. I want you to be a part of what
- 48:27God wants to do in your home. I want you to be a part of today
- 48:30is the day newness of life. Everything I shared today could
- 48:34be yours by faith. The Bible says that if you
- 48:39confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and you believe in your
- 48:43heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 48:46Go ahead bro, Go lay hands on her.
- 48:48There's pastors and leaders are here to be close so you know
- 48:52that you're not alone. And we'll also help follow up
- 48:56with you because you, we're with you for the long haul.
- 48:59We're with you for your family, for your kid.
- 49:02We're with you in your desire to follow him.
- 49:04We are with you to serve alongside of you to see your
- 49:09life change. So talk to God here.
- 49:11You could say something like this.
- 49:12God, I ask you to forgive me of all of my sins.
- 49:16I received the gift of salvation that you offered to me today.
- 49:21I choose to follow you with my life because I believe you in my
- 49:26heart that you love me and want me and have chosen me.
- 49:37I turn away from my sins today and choose to follow you with my
- 49:42life in Jesus name, Amen. We pray that you've been
- 49:47encouraged by this Bible study delivered live from the
