Latest / Bible Chat Devotional / June 9 - When Courage Counts
Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
- 0:06rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, June 9th, when
- 0:11courage counts. There's always a moment, maybe
- 0:16in the hallway, at school, online or in a group chat, where
- 0:19you see something wrong happening.
- 0:21Someone is being bullied, someone is being lied about,
- 0:25someone needs someone to speak up.
- 0:28And in that moment you have a choice.
- 0:30Stay quiet because it's safer or speak up because it's right.
- 0:34Most of us have stayed quiet at some point, and we know what
- 0:38that feels like afterward. First Samuel Chapter 11 verse 6
- 0:43says something remarkable. And the Spirit of God rushed
- 0:46upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly
- 0:50kindled. The people of Jabish were being
- 0:52threatened and humiliated by their enemies.
- 0:55And when Saul heard about it, God's Spirit moved in him
- 0:58powerfully. He didn't rationalize it.
- 1:01He didn't wait for someone else to act.
- 1:04He responded because the Spirit of God stirred him toward
- 1:07courage and action. Now, Saul isn't always a model
- 1:11character in the Bible. His story gets complicated
- 1:15later. But in this moment, he shows us
- 1:17something important. Courage that's God breathed
- 1:21looks different from human bravado.
- 1:23It's not reckless. It's not about proving yourself
- 1:26or showing off. It's about being so moved by
- 1:29what moves God that you act even when it's uncomfortable.
- 1:33Proverbs chapter 17, verses 15 and 16 warn about the opposite,
- 1:39justifying what's wrong, condemning what's right, and
- 1:42having the tools for wisdom but refusing to use them.
- 1:46That's a person who knows better but keeps choosing the path of
- 1:49least resistance. And God calls that an
- 1:52abomination. Strong word, but it shows how
- 1:55seriously he takes justice and integrity for young people
- 2:00today. This is real.
- 2:02It's easy to laugh along at a cruel joke so you don't become
- 2:05the target. It's easy to scroll past
- 2:08injustice because engaging might cost you something.
- 2:11It's easy to say it's not my problem.
- 2:14But when the Spirit of God is in you, you are equipped for more
- 2:17than that. Courage doesn't always look like
- 2:21a dramatic stand in front of a crowd.
- 2:23Sometimes it looks like sending a kind message to someone being
- 2:27mocked. Sometimes it looks like speaking
- 2:30truth in a conversation that's going sideways.
- 2:33Sometimes it looks like simply saying that's not right, when it
- 2:37would have been easier to say nothing.
- 2:39And here's the best news. You don't have to do it in your
- 2:42own strength. Like Saul.
- 2:44In this moment, the Spirit of God can rush upon you too.
- 2:48You just have to be willing. Let's pray.
- 2:52Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us courage through your
- 2:55spirit. When we see injustice, when
- 2:58we're tempted to stay silent, when doing right feels risky,
- 3:02fill us with your boldness. Help us to act with wisdom, to
- 3:05speak with love, and to trust that you go before us when we
- 3:09stand up for what is right. We can't do this in our own
- 3:12strength, but with You we can. In Jesus name, Amen.
- 3:18When a loved one's marriage is under strain, you may not know
- 3:21what to say, but you can still know how to pray.

- 4:13Now I invite you to spend time with God in today's three-year
- 4:16Bible reading plan. Proverbs chapter 17 verses 15 to
- 4:2116 World English Bible He who justifies the wicked and he who
- 4:26condemns the righteous, both of them alike are an abomination to
- 4:30Yahweh. Why is there money in the hand
- 4:33of a fool to buy wisdom, since he has no understanding?
- 4:36First Samuel Chapter 11 World English Bible Then Nahash the
- 4:42Ammonite came up and encamped against Jay Bush.
- 4:44Gilead and all the men of Jay Bush said to Nahash, make a
- 4:48covenant with us and we will serve you.
- 4:51Nahash the Ammonite said to them, on this condition, I will
- 4:55make it with you that all your right eyes be gouged out.
- 4:59I will make this dishonor all Israel.
- 5:01The elders of Jay Bush said to him, Give us seven days that we
- 5:05may send messengers to all the borders of Israel, and then if
- 5:09there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.
- 5:13Then the messengers came to Jiber of Saul and spoke these
- 5:16words in the ears of the people. Then all the people lifted up
- 5:20their voice and wept. Behold, Saul came following the
- 5:24oxen out of the field, and Saul said, What ails the people, that
- 5:27they weep. They told him the words of the
- 5:30men of Jabish. God's.
- 5:32Spirit came mightily on Saul when he heard those words, and
- 5:35his anger burned hot. He took a yoke of oxen and cut
- 5:40them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the borders of
- 5:43Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, Whoever
- 5:46doesn't come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be
- 5:50done to his oxen. The dread of Yahweh fell on the
- 5:53people, and they came out as one man.
- 5:57He counted them in Bezeq, and the children of Israel were
- 6:00300,000 and the men of Judah 30,000.
- 6:05They said to the messengers who came, Tell the men of Jabish
- 6:08Gilead tomorrow by the time the sun is hot, you will be rescued.
- 6:12The messengers came and told the men of Jabish, and they were
- 6:15glad. Therefore the men of Jabish
- 6:18said, tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us
- 6:21all that seems good to you. On the next day Saul put the
- 6:25people in three companies, and they came into the middle of the
- 6:29camp in the morning watch and struck the Ammonites until the
- 6:32heat of the day. Those who remained were
- 6:35scattered so that no two of them were left together.
- 6:39The people said to Samuel, Who is he who said, Shall Saul reign
- 6:42over us? Bring those men, that we may put
- 6:45them to death. Saul said, No man shall be put
- 6:48to death today, for today Yahweh has rescued Israel.
- 6:52Then Samuel said to the people, Come, let's go to Gilgal and
- 6:57renew the Kingdom there. All the people went to Gilgal,
- 7:00and there they made Saul king before Yahweh, and Gilgal there
- 7:04they offered sacrifices of peace, offerings before Yahweh,
- 7:08and there's Saul, and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
