Latest / Birdland Territory / Shane Baz gets no run support as O's fall to Rays in series finale
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, the Oriols ended a ten game
- 0:10Speaker 1: stretch of games against the two best teams not just
- 0:14Speaker 1: in their division, but in the American League. The Rays,
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Yankees, and the Rays. They played for the last
- 0:19Speaker 1: ten games. They lose Sunday against the Rays three to one,
- 0:22Speaker 1: taping the show after that game five and five stretch
- 0:26Speaker 1: in that ten game run, and now sixty three and
- 0:29Speaker 1: sixty eight for the season ed Welcome into Berdland territory
- 0:33Speaker 1: with Steve Maluski, Brad Brock, Tim Barbelace. This is how
- 0:37Speaker 1: mediocre the American League is.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Everybody.
- 0:39Speaker 1: At the start of this ten game stretch, the Oriols
- 0:42Speaker 1: were two out for the third wild card, trailing five teams,
- 0:48Speaker 1: and so as of this morning, before this loss, they
- 0:51Speaker 1: were one game out trailing three teams in going five
- 0:56Speaker 1: and four. So you don't have to win a lot
- 0:58Speaker 1: of games to gain ground in this media or race,
- 1:01Speaker 1: but they did lose ten games off the calendar. How
- 1:04Speaker 1: do you guys size up the whole stretch of the
- 1:07Speaker 1: last ten games.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I think kind of going into it, you were
- 1:10Speaker 3: hoping for six and four, and especially when they win
- 1:13Speaker 3: the first three games of the ten, you're thinking, man,
- 1:15Speaker 3: maybe if they go seven and three or something like that.
- 1:18Speaker 3: But the five and five, I think you're still above water.
- 1:22Speaker 3: You're still in the race, and you didn't go three
- 1:25Speaker 3: and seven, you didn't go two and eight, So I
- 1:27Speaker 3: think you kind of take the five and five. Yes,
- 1:28Speaker 3: I think it's a little disappointing when you look at
- 1:30Speaker 3: the winning the first three and then you finish kind
- 1:32Speaker 3: of two and five in the last seven. But you
- 1:35Speaker 3: know what, against the best teams in the American League
- 1:37Speaker 3: five hundred, you're probably taken.
- 1:38Speaker 4: You got to get your wins against everybody else.
- 1:40Speaker 3: So that's kind of the way I look at it.
- 1:44Speaker 5: It's sort of just been like the season, right, this
- 1:47Speaker 5: roller coaster ride, and I think heading into this ten
- 1:50Speaker 5: game stretch, I think you would take five and five
- 1:54Speaker 5: going against two of the better teams in the American League.
- 1:57Speaker 6: In the American League.
- 1:58Speaker 5: But Brad, like you said, you know, expectations kind of
- 2:01Speaker 5: changed and they ebb and flow throughout the season. So
- 2:04Speaker 5: when you take the first three of the ten, yeah,
- 2:07Speaker 5: you're getting greety and you're thinking, oh, it's got to
- 2:09Speaker 5: be six wins at a minimum. Maybe you can go
- 2:11Speaker 5: seven and three and really shock everybody. But it's just
- 2:15Speaker 5: a lot of inconsistencies. And right now, you know, the
- 2:18Speaker 5: O's kind of owned the Rays and the Yankees have
- 2:21Speaker 5: kind of owned the Orioles, and it's just it ends
- 2:24Speaker 5: up being a wash.
- 2:25Speaker 6: It ends up being a five and five stretch.
- 2:30Speaker 1: So today the storyline was familiar. Unfortunately for Shane Boz
- 2:34Speaker 1: who has luck this year, it's just all bad. And
- 2:38Speaker 1: today he's pitching a gem nothing, nothing to the six
- 2:41Speaker 1: two outs, nobody on. He's rolling through six scoreless. When
- 2:46Speaker 1: that ground balls hit to the left of Jackson Holiday
- 2:49Speaker 1: was hit one hundred and eight, so yeah, that's some
- 2:51Speaker 1: pace on it.
- 2:52Speaker 2: It looked at a boll. Jackson didn't get it.
- 2:54Speaker 1: That led to three runs being scored, and the Orioles
- 2:58Speaker 1: on a day they get two hitch loose three to one.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I say that was not routine. It was a little
- 3:05Speaker 1: north of routine. But what did not take an exceptional play.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I don't think they're going to score an air obviously,
- 3:11Speaker 1: then Jackson's gonna probably tell us he should have had
- 3:14Speaker 1: that ball.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's kind of what it comes down to.
- 3:17Speaker 3: It wasn't the easiest play, but you think a normal
- 3:20Speaker 3: major or I would say, like above average major league infielders,
- 3:23Speaker 3: they make that play, and I think Jackson would say
- 3:25Speaker 3: he probably should have had it.
- 3:26Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, when you're.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Pitching, you're on the mound, it's one hit, you know,
- 3:30Speaker 3: and then you just got to get out of the inning.
- 3:31Speaker 3: It's a single into right field and not a huge deal.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Shane would probably say, he's just got to get out
- 3:37Speaker 3: of that inning, but unfortunately he just he's running into
- 3:40Speaker 3: bad luck. Like you said, Steve, It's just blows my mind.
- 3:42Speaker 3: It's one of those weird baseball anomalies where certain pitchers
- 3:46Speaker 3: just do not get run support. And today he pitched
- 3:48Speaker 3: well enough to get a win and they didn't score
- 3:50Speaker 3: a run for him. And it's just kind of been
- 3:52Speaker 3: the stretch he's had all year. The fact that he's
- 3:54Speaker 3: four and fourteen on the season with how well he's
- 3:57Speaker 3: been pitching just doesn't make any sense to me. And
- 3:59Speaker 3: it's just kind of one of those weird baseball stats
- 4:01Speaker 3: that I feel like happens to at least somebody on
- 4:04Speaker 3: a team every single year, and Shane Boz it just
- 4:06Speaker 3: happens to be him this year.
- 4:09Speaker 5: It's like such an extreme guys, you know next year
- 4:13Speaker 5: he's due for so much run support, right, people has
- 4:16Speaker 5: to swing so bad in the right direction in twenty
- 4:19Speaker 5: twenty seven for Shane Boz, but Madison, they kept flashing
- 4:24Speaker 5: so many different graphics today when it comes to Shane
- 4:26Speaker 5: Boz and his outings, and I was shocked by.
- 4:29Speaker 6: All of them.
- 4:30Speaker 5: In his last twelve starts, the Orioles have given them
- 4:33Speaker 5: fifteen runs of support and the one that really jumped
- 4:37Speaker 5: out to me, guys, they're two and nine when Shane
- 4:43Speaker 5: Boz has a quality start two and nine, there's thirty
- 4:47Speaker 5: one and nine when anyone else has a quality start
- 4:49Speaker 5: on this staff.
- 4:50Speaker 6: So it's bizarre.
- 4:52Speaker 5: You know, he's given up the most unearned runs on
- 4:54Speaker 5: the team, but he's been a bulldog and he's really
- 4:58Speaker 5: I don't think he's really had it affect him in
- 5:01Speaker 5: a negative way because he still goes out there every fifth,
- 5:04Speaker 5: sixth day and you know what you're getting out of him.
- 5:08Speaker 5: He's a bulldog and he gets gets you deep in games.
- 5:12Speaker 1: No, I think he's a real pro. He had that
- 5:14Speaker 1: one jam look bad for him. He gets a double play,
- 5:16Speaker 1: rolls that and just has never said one discouraging word
- 5:22Speaker 1: about the clubhouse the offense, and it wouldn't get him anywhere.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It's a team game there there sometime along the wayne
- 5:29Speaker 1: in his career, maybe not this year, he's gonna give
- 5:31Speaker 1: up six and they're gonna score eight. You know, that's
- 5:33Speaker 1: that's gonna happen too. But Brad, what is what do
- 5:36Speaker 1: you think is the mindset of Boz when this lack
- 5:40Speaker 1: of offense keeps happening.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I think it's a it's a start
- 5:44Speaker 3: to start thing. But I think in the back of
- 5:46Speaker 3: his mind he probably is thinking, I got to go
- 5:48Speaker 3: out there and give up no runs.
- 5:49Speaker 4: You know, that's the best way.
- 5:50Speaker 3: To possibly get a win is give up none and
- 5:53Speaker 3: hopefully we score one and I'll have a shot at
- 5:55Speaker 3: a win. But I really like to comment Jim Palmer
- 5:58Speaker 3: me today. He just said, you know, it's not really
- 6:01Speaker 3: working out for Shane this year, but pitching in these
- 6:03Speaker 3: tight games like he has all year long is going
- 6:05Speaker 3: to really help him further on down his career road.
- 6:08Speaker 4: And I think pitching in these types of games really
- 6:11Speaker 4: helps you win.
- 6:12Speaker 3: You need to have a big start in a close game,
- 6:14Speaker 3: two to one game, three to two game. He's made
- 6:17Speaker 3: pitches like this all season long, where the offense hasn't
- 6:19Speaker 3: been scoring, he's had to keep the other teams offense down,
- 6:23Speaker 3: so unfortunately, I mean, who knows, maybe the next month
- 6:26Speaker 3: get he gets on a roll here and the offense
- 6:28Speaker 3: scores some runs. His overall record is not going to
- 6:31Speaker 3: look great, but I think moving forward into next year
- 6:33Speaker 3: and the seasons after that, he's going to look back
- 6:35Speaker 3: at this season and really think about all the big
- 6:37Speaker 3: time pitches he's had to make throughout the year, and
- 6:40Speaker 3: I think it's only going to help him be a
- 6:41Speaker 3: better pitcher further on down the road.
- 6:46Speaker 5: No, I completely agree where it's just every single inning
- 6:50Speaker 5: he's in, it's high leverage because the game is just
- 6:53Speaker 5: up for perhaps because he's not given up much, especially
- 6:58Speaker 5: over this last seventeen eighteen start stretch, and obviously the
- 7:03Speaker 5: Orioles just haven't been scoring in many runs. It's a
- 7:07Speaker 5: great point by Jim Palmer, you know, just he will
- 7:11Speaker 5: be better having gone through this.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Yeah, this guy was back today. We'll touch on it
- 7:18Speaker 1: a little later in the show, The Return of the Mountain.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Felix Bautista pitched at double A today. We'll tell you
- 7:23Speaker 1: more about that. It didn't go great, but he was
- 7:25Speaker 1: back in the game. That was the most important thing,
- 7:28Speaker 1: and he was healthy and throwing for double a chesapeak.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Today we'll touch on that, and we got some offensive
- 7:35Speaker 1: stats to give you in a minute.
- 7:36Speaker 2: And also I want.
- 7:37Speaker 1: To tell you about the fact that the Orioles did
- 7:40Speaker 1: something for one hundred and twenty one straight games that
- 7:42Speaker 1: they did not do on Sunday against Tampa. Will note
- 7:47Speaker 1: that in a minute on Birdland Territory.
- 7:50Speaker 7: Hey, for those of you that are on your phone's
- 7:52Speaker 7: very often, or even if you don't use it much,
- 7:54Speaker 7: you should check out your wireless bill and make sure
- 7:56Speaker 7: that it is treating you well. In summertime. You're feeling good, right, aj,
- 8:01Speaker 7: But are you spending too much on your wireless bill?
- 8:04Speaker 7: And should mintmobile get involved?
- 8:06Speaker 2: Now?
- 8:06Speaker 8: Some of them has two college aged kids got They're
- 8:08Speaker 8: always on their phone, whether it's they're checking their snap,
- 8:11Speaker 8: they're checking their DMS, they're checking their Twitter. I need
- 8:14Speaker 8: fifteen dollars a month because I need unlimited quality coverage
- 8:17Speaker 8: that Mintmobile provides.
- 8:19Speaker 7: They get that new wireless plan for just fifteen bucks
- 8:21Speaker 7: a month. Go to mintmobile dot com slash territory. That's
- 8:24Speaker 7: mintmobile dot com slash territory. Cut your wireless bill to
- 8:27Speaker 7: fifteen dollars a month at mintmobile dot com slash territory.
- 8:30Speaker 2: That's it.

- 8:33Speaker 7: ninety dollars for six months, or one hundred eighty dollars
- 8:36Speaker 7: for twelve month. Plan required fifteen dollars per month equivalent
- 8:38Speaker 7: taxes and fees extra initial plan term only greater than
- 8:41Speaker 7: fifty gigabytes may slow when network is busy. Includes up
- 8:43Speaker 7: to twenty gigabyte hotspot capable device required availability, speed and
- 8:47Speaker 7: coverage barriers CEE mintmobile dot com.
- 8:50Speaker 1: So the Oriols lose Sunday to Tampa Bay three to one,
- 8:53Speaker 1: they go two and four. On the home stand, they
- 8:56Speaker 1: are sixty three and sixty eight for the season, thirty
- 8:59Speaker 1: one game to go. They would need to win nineteen
- 9:02Speaker 1: to have a winning season nineteen and twelve or better.
- 9:06Speaker 1: The caveat here is they might not need that many
- 9:09Speaker 1: to get in the playoffs. That crazy it is in
- 9:12Speaker 1: American league where you may not have to have a
- 9:14Speaker 1: winning season to get in this year. But I teased
- 9:17Speaker 1: that stat guys. The Oriols going going into today had
- 9:20Speaker 1: gone one hundred and twenty one straight games, drawing at
- 9:23Speaker 1: least one walk since April sixth, and they did not
- 9:27Speaker 1: have a walk today. In this three to one loss.
- 9:30Speaker 1: You only had two hits, which, by the way, Colton
- 9:32Speaker 1: Towser was two for three. Everybody else was over for
- 9:36Speaker 1: twenty seven in that strange including Pete Alonzo, who's fourteen
- 9:40Speaker 1: game hitting streak ended. But look at this that this
- 9:42Speaker 1: one is disappointing to me. Go back to that Tampa
- 9:45Speaker 1: Bay series at the trop they scored twenty six runs
- 9:47Speaker 1: in four games, eleven for thirty three runners in scoring position.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Last six games Yankees and Rays, they scored fourteen runs
- 9:57Speaker 1: and they went two for twenty nine. Describes the Oriole
- 10:01Speaker 1: season in a nutshell. Ten games against good teams, great
- 10:06Speaker 1: for some of them and miserable for the rest, and
- 10:09Speaker 1: almost never a middle ground for these guys.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's I think the most the most shocking
- 10:14Speaker 3: thing is that there isn't the middle ground ever. I
- 10:17Speaker 3: feel it's been extremes almost all year. It's been really
- 10:20Speaker 3: really good or really really poor, and it's just just
- 10:23Speaker 3: odd that they can't seem to like just keep the momentum,
- 10:26Speaker 3: like we've talked about at nauseam on this show is
- 10:29Speaker 3: just keeping the momentum going. It's just been really hard
- 10:32Speaker 3: for them to keep positive, you know, gameplay going throughout
- 10:36Speaker 3: the season, whether it was the pitching, whether it was
- 10:38Speaker 3: a hitting, they can't seem to line them up. And
- 10:40Speaker 3: then you look at this, I mean, twenty six runs
- 10:42Speaker 3: in those four games in Tampa and then eleven for
- 10:44Speaker 3: thirty three and then the two for twenty nine at home,
- 10:47Speaker 3: runners in scoring position. I mean, that's that's really tough
- 10:50Speaker 3: to win games when you're not getting runners in when
- 10:52Speaker 3: they're at second base, and that's I mean, why you
- 10:55Speaker 3: go to four or two and six or sorry, two
- 10:58Speaker 3: and four at home in this homestand and kind of
- 11:00Speaker 3: why they got that five and five record the last
- 11:02Speaker 3: ten games.
- 11:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it just perfectly illustrates why it's been
- 11:07Speaker 5: so difficult for this team to go on sustained runs
- 11:10Speaker 5: because they're just not able to have any type of consistency.
- 11:13Speaker 5: You know that they only have one win streak over
- 11:16Speaker 5: four games, and that was the seven game winning streak,
- 11:19Speaker 5: So they're gonna have to go on a run here
- 11:22Speaker 5: at some point to get into this final wildcard spot.
- 11:27Speaker 5: But it's just disappointing because I remember doing the show
- 11:31Speaker 5: last Sunday where the Orioles took the first three against
- 11:33Speaker 5: the Rays, and you're buying into this offense, and even
- 11:36Speaker 5: losing last Monday against the Rays, that the offense still
- 11:40Speaker 5: scored and you know, Cano gave it up late. But
- 11:43Speaker 5: I was buying the turnaround because it just seemed like,
- 11:46Speaker 5: for the first time in a while, there were multiple
- 11:49Speaker 5: guys going at the same time.
- 11:51Speaker 6: It wasn't just Pete, for example.
- 11:52Speaker 5: But it's just kind of reverted over the past handful
- 11:57Speaker 5: of games since that point. You know, it's been good
- 11:59Speaker 5: seeing Beavers swing it well. He had three straight games
- 12:02Speaker 5: with a home run, having that walk off. I mean,
- 12:05Speaker 5: he's mister walkoff guys, four walk offs already in his
- 12:08Speaker 5: young career. Sam had a big moment yesterday. But there's
- 12:14Speaker 5: gotta be more to the party. It can't just be
- 12:17Speaker 5: Pete Alonzo.
- 12:19Speaker 1: It was interesting Saturday night interviewing Abernas after the game,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and of course he batted with a man on what
- 12:30Speaker 1: this man on second for Dylan and no oubts.
- 12:34Speaker 6: Right, he was a leadoff hitter, yes, tent okay, yep.
- 12:38Speaker 1: So he says to him, you can bun him over,
- 12:41Speaker 1: but I trust you to hit away like he's you know,
- 12:44Speaker 1: you're you do what you want to do. I think
- 12:46Speaker 1: that's a lot of trust in the young player who
- 12:48Speaker 1: still is technically a rookie, and he's certainly swinging it
- 12:52Speaker 1: maybe by the way, which the Birdman territory bump for Dylan.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, coming about delay since we have on the show.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Guy now can't get him out, especially in the clutch,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and I think that really bodes well for his future, don't.
- 13:05Speaker 2: You, guys.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not predicting starting the eight hundred ops
- 13:09Speaker 1: all Star appearances, but I think he can be a
- 13:11Speaker 1: solid hitter. And if you're coming through in those spots,
- 13:15Speaker 1: I think eventually you're gonna start coming through in a
- 13:17Speaker 1: lot of spots throughout nine innings.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I think so.
- 13:20Speaker 3: I think it's it can only builde well for his
- 13:22Speaker 3: future and for his career when he's got all the
- 13:25Speaker 3: tools and if you can throw the clutch tool and
- 13:27Speaker 3: they're also I mean, you have a player that's like
- 13:30Speaker 3: he may, like you said, maybe not a superstar or
- 13:31Speaker 3: maybe not an All Star, but a very very consistent
- 13:34Speaker 3: major league player when you're getting runners in when they're
- 13:37Speaker 3: on second base, and I think he does a really
- 13:39Speaker 3: good job with that. And like we said, we've talked
- 13:41Speaker 3: about his defense, we've talked about his base running. Obviously
- 13:43Speaker 3: has the power, He's got it all there. And I
- 13:45Speaker 3: think you know that when you have the managers kind
- 13:48Speaker 3: of blessing, like he said, still in his rookie season,
- 13:50Speaker 3: that shows a lot. And I think that letting him
- 13:53Speaker 3: swing away there against one of the better relievers in
- 13:55Speaker 3: all the American League in the tenth inning on Saturday
- 13:58Speaker 3: shows a lot. And I think it shows that his
- 14:00Speaker 3: future is going to be right here in Birdland.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Such a smart hitter.
- 14:05Speaker 6: And see we've said that this is someone that's still
- 14:07Speaker 6: a rookie. He hasn't played that many games.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Yeah, he hasn't played many games yet, and and to
- 14:15Speaker 5: have this many walk offs, and and look, he has
- 14:18Speaker 5: all the tools. He's a really athletic player, and when
- 14:21Speaker 5: he's going well, he's going to give you a professional
- 14:23Speaker 5: at bat. But you know, Craig albern has clearly has
- 14:27Speaker 5: the trust of him. And I think he even said
- 14:30Speaker 5: during one of his walkoffs, slow heartbeat is what he
- 14:34Speaker 5: called Dylan Beavers.
- 14:35Speaker 6: And look, this.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Is kind of the land of opportunity in terms of
- 14:40Speaker 5: next year for this outfield, because there's probably not a
- 14:43Speaker 5: position group on this team that's more in flux. So
- 14:46Speaker 5: if you're Dylan Beavers, if you're anyone in that outfield,
- 14:49Speaker 5: you have a nice thirty game runway here where you
- 14:52Speaker 5: can make an impression on Michael ISAs in this front
- 14:54Speaker 5: office and say, hey, you know I deserve to be
- 14:58Speaker 5: in the opening day starting lineup in this outfield in
- 15:01Speaker 5: twenty twenty seven.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, Beavers is such a smart player he's talking about
- 15:07Speaker 1: you know, I wanted him to bring the ball up,
- 15:09Speaker 1: but I knew I had to react to the change up,
- 15:11Speaker 1: so I was gonna make sure he didn't get a
- 15:13Speaker 1: high fastball by me, and I could also adjust to
- 15:17Speaker 1: the change up, which he did get a change up.
- 15:19Speaker 1: I believe that bitch he drilled off the wall to
- 15:21Speaker 1: win the game. So he's such a cerebral player. I
- 15:24Speaker 1: saw that on the farm man deep thinker. Somehow he's
- 15:27Speaker 1: able to take all that deep thinking and turn it
- 15:30Speaker 1: into a play where he can hit ninety six. You know,
- 15:32Speaker 1: he don't have a lot of time to think there
- 15:34Speaker 1: when that's happening. And I like what Dustin Lynn said
- 15:36Speaker 1: about today the Oriols hitting coach.
- 15:39Speaker 2: He said he's got a high floor.
- 15:42Speaker 1: By that, he said, this a really good contact hitter,
- 15:45Speaker 1: really good strike zone. In other words, the bottom he
- 15:49Speaker 1: could be is here, but the top could be up here.
- 15:51Speaker 1: And you know, we know he's going to be certain
- 15:53Speaker 1: level good. We're just waiting to see what level that
- 15:56Speaker 1: finds itself at.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think that's a great way to describe him.
- 16:01Speaker 3: I think he, like you said, his cerebral hitter, but
- 16:03Speaker 3: he's got the tools to back up his approach. And
- 16:05Speaker 3: I think that's when you know, very good players come
- 16:08Speaker 3: out or guys that have the thinking but can I mean,
- 16:11Speaker 3: like you said, you're trying to react to ninety seven
- 16:13Speaker 3: at the top of the zone, but you're able to
- 16:15Speaker 3: drop the head on the change up.
- 16:16Speaker 4: But there's only.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Certain players that have the tools that are able to
- 16:20Speaker 3: do that. He's one of those players, and I think
- 16:22Speaker 3: the thinking side of things can help take him to
- 16:24Speaker 3: that next level.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 5: I really like that quote from Dustin Lynn because I
- 16:29Speaker 5: think when you look at Beaver's and again this is
- 16:32Speaker 5: still a small sample size for his MLB career, he
- 16:35Speaker 5: definitely has the makings of a player that can last
- 16:39Speaker 5: in this league. Now is he going to be a superstar.
- 16:42Speaker 5: We shall see. I don't think we know Dylan Beaver's
- 16:45Speaker 5: ceiling at this point, and you know he's continuing to
- 16:49Speaker 5: grow as a major league player. But I am with
- 16:51Speaker 5: Dustin Lynn. I think he does have a high floor
- 16:55Speaker 5: in this in MLB.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Yeah, for me, Dylan defense could use some improvement.
- 17:02Speaker 2: He might agree with us.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Even on the farm, the reports I got and what
- 17:07Speaker 1: little I saw was better than what we've seen in
- 17:10Speaker 1: the major league. So I'm not sure what drills or
- 17:13Speaker 1: work or facility he can go to the winner. We
- 17:16Speaker 1: hear oftentimes about hitting and bat speed and all that,
- 17:19Speaker 1: But what helps you get better on d better jumps,
- 17:22Speaker 1: better read so forth. That's something I think Dylan, and
- 17:26Speaker 1: he being such a driven kid, no doubt we'll look
- 17:29Speaker 1: at that too and say, maybe that is something I
- 17:31Speaker 1: got to spend some time on this winner. So there's
- 17:35Speaker 1: more to come in his scheme, I think, is what
- 17:37Speaker 1: we're all saying. Yeah, and that's kind of exciting for
- 17:39Speaker 1: him and the Orioles. So there are sixty three and
- 17:42Speaker 1: sixty eight after the loss today, when we come back,
- 17:45Speaker 1: let's talk about Samuel Basil. A couple of guns to
- 17:48Speaker 1: second base, today man that hose was good. And Felix Bautista,
- 17:52Speaker 1: he's got a pretty good arm on his own, and
- 17:55Speaker 1: he pitched.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Today a little bit in DOUBLEA.
- 17:57Speaker 1: We'll check in on those two young Orioles next.

- 19:02Speaker 1: Well, I was in really Friday to do some interviews.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I wasn't there today, but the big man was. Felix
- 19:06Speaker 1: Bautista got to start in the SpongeBob jersey in the
- 19:11Speaker 1: miners today for the double A Chesapeake Bay Sox as
- 19:14Speaker 1: they played a really good Richmond Flying Squirrels team. His
- 19:18Speaker 1: final line, You're not gonna like it birdland the third
- 19:20Speaker 1: of an inning, one hit, three runs, three walks, no strikeouts.
- 19:24Speaker 1: He gave up two steals as well when he was
- 19:26Speaker 1: on the mound. Twenty two pitches, just ten strikes and so, guys,
- 19:30Speaker 1: the results weren't great. The fact he was pitching for
- 19:33Speaker 1: the first time since July twentieth, twenty twenty five was
- 19:39Speaker 1: And I just got to believe the Orioles after two
- 19:41Speaker 1: major surgeries Tommy John and then last August. Thing now
- 19:45Speaker 1: was Labram. This is gonna be ultra conservative.
- 19:49Speaker 2: They can't.
- 19:50Speaker 1: They just can't rush this guy. He means too much
- 19:52Speaker 1: in their future. After all this work to get to
- 19:54Speaker 1: this point. You don't just bliss him through the final
- 19:59Speaker 1: five or ten yards.
- 20:00Speaker 3: No, definitely not. And I think the biggest thing is
- 20:02Speaker 3: just he's healthy. As long as he's out there, he's pitching,
- 20:06Speaker 3: results mean absolutely nothing, and it's it's tough when you're
- 20:09Speaker 3: trying to come back to the major leagues. You're rehabbing,
- 20:11Speaker 3: and you're in the minor leagues and they know the guy.
- 20:14Speaker 3: He's on the major league roster and he's just rehabbing,
- 20:16Speaker 3: and things are just different when you're out there. I've
- 20:18Speaker 3: always seen guys go out and just that it just
- 20:21Speaker 3: doesn't look right, and then they get called up and
- 20:22Speaker 3: all of a sudden, they're back to the guy you
- 20:24Speaker 3: see on TV. So it's a weird thing. But my
- 20:27Speaker 3: biggest thing is just how he feels tomorrow. And I
- 20:29Speaker 3: think that's all the ools are worried about it. Obviously,
- 20:31Speaker 3: you want to see him throw a little bit more strikes,
- 20:33Speaker 3: but he's back out on a mound pitching and throwing.
- 20:36Speaker 3: Steve said ninety five ninety seven, that's to me, that's
- 20:39Speaker 3: what you want to see. And just see how he
- 20:40Speaker 3: feels the day after he pitches. That's the biggest thing.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I just think expectations need to be tempered when
- 20:47Speaker 5: it comes to Felix Batista. I don't think it's fair
- 20:50Speaker 5: to him, you know, to expect Peak Mountain coming off
- 20:54Speaker 5: those type of third uries. And I think I said
- 20:57Speaker 5: this last episode guys, when he went that torn labram
- 21:01Speaker 5: and rotator cuff surgery, I thought he was done. I
- 21:05Speaker 5: did not expect to see Felix Baaltist to pitch again.
- 21:08Speaker 6: So I think he deserves so much credit.
- 21:11Speaker 5: I think the Orioles medical staff, everyone involved with his
- 21:15Speaker 5: rehab deserves a ton of credit. The fact that he
- 21:18Speaker 5: is even pitching blows me away. And I know that.
- 21:22Speaker 5: I think he told the beat guys, Steve, you know
- 21:25Speaker 5: he's gonna move to Norfolk, I believe, on Tuesday.
- 21:28Speaker 6: But this is gonna be a progression.
- 21:31Speaker 5: You know, this isn't gonna be a situation where Felix
- 21:34Speaker 5: is getting called up next week. You know, it's it's
- 21:37Speaker 5: gonna be a process to get him back right.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Norfolk is playing at Durham starting Tuesday night, so he'll
- 21:45Speaker 1: make that trip a little south at Durham Athletic Park
- 21:50Speaker 1: and pitch there. Speaking of my minor leaguers, I love
- 21:53Speaker 1: I gotta give you this stat. Look at this. Since
- 21:55Speaker 1: June nineteenth, w A Chesapeake has the best team ERA
- 22:00Speaker 1: all of Minor league baseball, and dating to the end
- 22:03Speaker 1: of July, their starters have a double A best two
- 22:06Speaker 1: fifty nine ERA more strikeouts than innings, and Friday, I
- 22:10Speaker 1: interviewed their three top one hundred pitchers.
- 22:13Speaker 2: That was really cool.
- 22:14Speaker 1: I talked to Anthony Ions and Joseph Jerwan and Caden Hunter.
- 22:17Speaker 1: These are three aces they've got down Bowie, They've got guy.
- 22:21Speaker 1: They got guy named Sebastian Gongora pitch well today who
- 22:26Speaker 1: no one ever talks about, is not in the top thirty.
- 22:28Speaker 1: A lefty they got, so they they got a stud rotation.
- 22:31Speaker 1: It's fun to watch. They're probably gonna come up a
- 22:33Speaker 1: little bit short of the playoffs, but those guys are
- 22:38Speaker 1: pushing each.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Other, Brad.
- 22:39Speaker 1: When I talk to them, they're they're really a team
- 22:41Speaker 1: within a team and growing and developing together.
- 22:44Speaker 3: No, I think it's great having those three guys, like
- 22:46Speaker 3: you said, and then having the other guys trying to
- 22:48Speaker 3: compete with them. It's it creates healthy competition between guys
- 22:52Speaker 3: on the team, and when you're in the minor leagues,
- 22:54Speaker 3: it's it's kind of hard to understand that when you
- 22:56Speaker 3: get to the big leagues, you're you're not your own entity.
- 22:59Speaker 3: You're still with but you still have your career that
- 23:03Speaker 3: gets kind of brought to the forefront once you're in
- 23:06Speaker 3: the major leagues. But it's great having guys that you
- 23:08Speaker 3: play with that are major league quality players and you
- 23:11Speaker 3: get to see on a daily basis and you're pushing
- 23:13Speaker 3: each other to put up good results, and I think
- 23:15Speaker 3: that can only help these guys get better. When I
- 23:18Speaker 3: was coming up in the minor leagues, I think we
- 23:19Speaker 3: had I want to say it was twenty or twenty
- 23:21Speaker 3: one guys from my low A team made it to
- 23:23Speaker 3: the major leagues at some point. And when you're playing
- 23:25Speaker 3: around that much talent on an everyday basis, it really
- 23:28Speaker 3: pushes you to want to be considered one of those guys.
- 23:31Speaker 3: And I think when you have three guys in a
- 23:33Speaker 3: rotation like that, it's kind of like, Okay, you did
- 23:35Speaker 3: this yesterday, I'm going to go out there tomorrow and
- 23:37Speaker 3: do better, and that's healthy. I think it's great to
- 23:39Speaker 3: have that, and I think those guys can only push
- 23:41Speaker 3: each other to get better.
- 23:43Speaker 6: It's exciting.
- 23:44Speaker 5: You know, we've been talking about just how this farm
- 23:47Speaker 5: system is really jumped up, you know, Baseball America had
- 23:49Speaker 5: them fifteenth and now they're fifth in the span of
- 23:52Speaker 5: a month, you know, just the influx of talent through
- 23:56Speaker 5: the draft obviously at the trade deadline, and Steve had
- 24:00Speaker 5: a chance to talk to Anthony Iinson immediately the day
- 24:04Speaker 5: after his last.
- 24:05Speaker 6: Start where he went seven innings.
- 24:06Speaker 5: It was the first time in his professional career up
- 24:09Speaker 5: until this point that he completed six innings. He completed seven,
- 24:13Speaker 5: and just what a great kid, like, what a great guy.
- 24:17Speaker 6: You know.
- 24:17Speaker 5: We asked him about what is it like having that
- 24:19Speaker 5: type of start, and he was saying, look, we didn't
- 24:23Speaker 5: win the game, so really I don't even view it
- 24:25Speaker 5: that way.
- 24:25Speaker 6: It just gave all the right answers.
- 24:28Speaker 5: And I'm sure the others Steve really any of the
- 24:31Speaker 5: times that were at Chesapeake, can we interview these guys.
- 24:35Speaker 5: They're all just really, really good dudes. But it's a
- 24:38Speaker 5: very talented system right now, particularly with the arms.
- 24:43Speaker 1: They pitched three knights in a row, these three aces,
- 24:46Speaker 1: if you will, I'm kind of nominating him. Is that
- 24:49Speaker 1: Joe wat Tuesday night gives up one run, Hunter, Wednesday
- 24:53Speaker 1: night gives up one run, Ions and Thursday night gives
- 24:56Speaker 1: up one run.
- 24:57Speaker 2: They were really good.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Three knights in a row, and that's I guess they're
- 25:01Speaker 1: lined up to pitch back to back to back. Here
- 25:03Speaker 1: final few weeks for the Bassics, Let's talk about Samuel
- 25:08Speaker 1: Basio gunning out runners at second Next.
- 25:12Speaker 9: Big morning show Vinnie and Haiti three Deep live on
- 25:17Speaker 9: YouTube Monday through Friday six till six, Search one oh
- 25:20Speaker 9: five seven Fan Baltimore and never miss a moment of
- 25:23Speaker 9: coverage on the teams you love.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Give somemorial credit here player development. That was telling me
- 25:31Speaker 1: for years, guys, not days or months, but years, Samuel
- 25:35Speaker 1: Basio will catch in the big leagues, while I had
- 25:37Speaker 1: scouts from around baseball telling me he would not. He's
- 25:41Speaker 1: too big. It's not gonna work out for him catching
- 25:43Speaker 1: in the big leagues. Pop time per stat gass Pasio's
- 25:47Speaker 1: at one point nine to two, Rutchman's at one point
- 25:50Speaker 1: nine to five, Nirvaia's is one point nine seven. And
- 25:55Speaker 1: we saw that on display today.
- 25:58Speaker 2: It looked good.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he's got an absolute cannon back there,
- 26:01Speaker 3: and I think that there's nothing you love more as
- 26:04Speaker 3: a pitcher and basically not having a worry about the
- 26:06Speaker 3: guy at first base because you know you have a
- 26:07Speaker 3: catcher that could throw him out at second, so you
- 26:10Speaker 3: don't have to be as we know Shane boz Is,
- 26:12Speaker 3: he's a little deliberate to the plate, so he's not
- 26:14Speaker 3: the quickest. And having Pasada back there, knowing he's got
- 26:17Speaker 3: a canon, gives you a little bit of you know,
- 26:19Speaker 3: in the back of your mind. Okay, I don't have
- 26:20Speaker 3: to be super quick to the plate. I can really
- 26:23Speaker 3: stay in my mechanics and worry about the pitch I'm
- 26:25Speaker 3: trying to make.
- 26:25Speaker 4: And Sammy just does a great job.
- 26:27Speaker 3: I feel like we've talked about this before, but I
- 26:29Speaker 3: just feel like he is he does.
- 26:31Speaker 4: Not look like a rookie anymore behind the plate.
- 26:33Speaker 3: He really controls the game. He's got the pitcher's emotions
- 26:36Speaker 3: under control. He calls a great game. And then when
- 26:39Speaker 3: you throw guys out like he did today, your pitchers
- 26:43Speaker 3: absolutely love throwing to you. So it's a great, great
- 26:45Speaker 3: thing to see and great to see him back healthy
- 26:47Speaker 3: throwing guys out behind the plate.
- 26:50Speaker 5: And the second one was to strike him out, throw
- 26:52Speaker 5: him out, so to get a double play there, that's massive,
- 26:55Speaker 5: you know, helping to keep you in the game.
- 26:58Speaker 6: And I always.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Back to Trevor Rodgers guys like he just opes about
- 27:06Speaker 5: talking pitching two Stamwell Bisio and his era pitching sam
- 27:10Speaker 5: compared to everyone else is night and day. And also
- 27:14Speaker 5: we got to give him a hat tip. This is
- 27:16Speaker 5: someone that does not shrink in big time moments. And
- 27:19Speaker 5: obviously he was inserted as a pinch hitter on Saturday,
- 27:23Speaker 5: hit that huge two run homer to tie the ballgame.
- 27:27Speaker 5: Guys in high leverage spots this year, Samuel Basillo is
- 27:31Speaker 5: hitting three seventeen. He's got a nine to thirty six
- 27:34Speaker 5: OPS in high leverage situations. So the bigger the moment,
- 27:39Speaker 5: the brighter he shined.
- 27:42Speaker 1: And Matson put up a stat today well over nine
- 27:44Speaker 1: hundred OPS in the Ale East. Yeah, a lot of
- 27:47Speaker 1: those pitchers.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Uh.
- 27:49Speaker 1: And the other thing I'll say today about the caught stealing,
- 27:52Speaker 1: the pitcher's got to give him.
- 27:53Speaker 2: A chance and they and they did. Yeah, Tampa Bay.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Is first in the American League in steals. This is
- 27:58Speaker 1: a team that's good at it knows how to do
- 28:00Speaker 1: it succeeds a lot, and he got him twice today.
- 28:04Speaker 1: It goes back to what Adlee told me earlier in
- 28:06Speaker 1: the year. And I'm not sure if there's apply to
- 28:08Speaker 1: sand probably does. Adley was really working hard at throwing
- 28:12Speaker 1: right to the bag because he skipped a lot of throws,
- 28:15Speaker 1: remember early And I asked him, are.
- 28:16Speaker 2: You doing that on purposes?
- 28:18Speaker 1: There's some analytics, it says, balance it maybe, and he
- 28:21Speaker 1: goes no, He goes, I'm trying to if I air
- 28:23Speaker 1: or want to air low rather than high, we got
- 28:25Speaker 1: a better chance than way up here.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Bring the tag down and sometimes you come up short.
- 28:30Speaker 2: But sometimes you throw right to the bag like he
- 28:32Speaker 2: did today.
- 28:34Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think a lot of times too, when
- 28:36Speaker 3: if you're going for accuracy more than arm strength, I
- 28:39Speaker 3: feel like aker throws throw runners out more than the
- 28:42Speaker 3: strong throw. You know, you obviously can have both together
- 28:46Speaker 3: and the guys out by a mile. But a lot
- 28:47Speaker 3: of times if you're accurate and you give a nice
- 28:49Speaker 3: throw right to the bag, I feel like you give
- 28:51Speaker 3: a better chance there than rocketing in.
- 28:53Speaker 4: And like you said, see being high to the left
- 28:55Speaker 4: to the right. But if you're on the bag, I.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Just feel like your chances go up of getting a
- 28:59Speaker 3: good getting the base on round. I know that sounds
- 29:01Speaker 3: pretty simple, but it's a lot harder, especially behind the
- 29:05Speaker 3: play when you're trying to do everything so quick to
- 29:07Speaker 3: throw it to a perfect spot. But Sam, he's been
- 29:09Speaker 3: doing a great job. I feel like a lot of
- 29:10Speaker 3: his throws this year have been right on the money,
- 29:12Speaker 3: right on the back.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:13Speaker 5: I mean, it's captain obvious, but you can have you
- 29:17Speaker 5: can have a gun, but if you're throwing it into
- 29:19Speaker 5: the outfield, what does it do?
- 29:21Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 29:21Speaker 5: Yeah, you definitely want the accurate throw for sure. I mean,
- 29:24Speaker 5: whether it's on a hop or ideally right in him,
- 29:27Speaker 5: it goes right into the tag. But Sam Stam's got
- 29:30Speaker 5: a gun and it's accurate.
- 29:32Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 29:34Speaker 1: So here we are again, Berdland five games under, still
- 29:37Speaker 1: within two games of the wild card.
- 29:39Speaker 6: At the end of the night.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Might be one and a half too, We're not sure,
- 29:42Speaker 1: pending the other results. We know the Oriels have lost.
- 29:45Speaker 1: It's crazy this road trip coming up certain Tuesday night
- 29:47Speaker 1: Saint Louis. They're at wildcard contender in the National League,
- 29:51Speaker 1: but Enancy Athletics in Colorado they're at the bottom of
- 29:53Speaker 1: baseball in their respective leagues. So there is a chance
- 29:56Speaker 1: to make some hay in nine games coming up.
- 30:00Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 30:00Speaker 3: I just wanted to give a shout out to Tyler O'Neill.
- 30:01Speaker 3: He's going back to play the team he came up
- 30:03Speaker 3: with the Cardinals. But his game last night was incredible.
- 30:06Speaker 3: That diving catch, save the running the ninth and he
- 30:08Speaker 3: threw out a base running a third base there for
- 30:10Speaker 3: the first out.
- 30:11Speaker 4: So you know, who knows.
- 30:12Speaker 3: Maybe going back sometimes when you go back to face
- 30:14Speaker 3: your former team, you can have a big series. But
- 30:17Speaker 3: he's been he's been doing a great job in the outfield,
- 30:19Speaker 3: and I feel like it's been overlooked a little bit
- 30:20Speaker 3: this year. But that game on Saturday, he almost single
- 30:22Speaker 3: handedly won with those couple of plays, and he's just
- 30:24Speaker 3: been regardless of how he's been hitting, I feel like
- 30:27Speaker 3: he's really put it all out there on the line
- 30:29Speaker 3: in the outfield and it's been I think a great,
- 30:32Speaker 3: you know, example to the younger players too that if
- 30:35Speaker 3: your best not there, you still have to play the
- 30:36Speaker 3: field and give your all and make these plays. And
- 30:38Speaker 3: he's had a lot of diving, really nice plays this season.
- 30:41Speaker 3: I just had to say that before the show.
- 30:43Speaker 6: Was no, absolutely, no, he I'm with you, Brad.
- 30:48Speaker 5: I mean that that catch in the ninth inning where
- 30:50Speaker 5: it looks like a bloop and that would have scored
- 30:52Speaker 5: a run, the Rays would have went ahead.
- 30:54Speaker 6: Absolutely he was massive for him. But guys, I feel
- 30:57Speaker 6: like we said this so many times this year.
- 31:00Speaker 2: They gotta go.
- 31:01Speaker 5: Six and three, like they gotta like a six and three,
- 31:04Speaker 5: a seven and two. This is all out in front
- 31:08Speaker 5: of them. The A's and the Rockies are two of
- 31:10Speaker 5: the worst teams in the majors. The Cardinals, they just
- 31:13Speaker 5: flew a four to one lead, I think, to the
- 31:15Speaker 5: Phillies in today's game. Yes, I understand they're fighting for
- 31:19Speaker 5: a wild card themselves, but it's not like they're a
- 31:22Speaker 5: team of world beaters that you gotta find a way
- 31:25Speaker 5: to at a minimum go six and three in this stretch.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Absolutely you do.
- 31:30Speaker 1: If the Oils can go seventeen and seven, which is
- 31:33Speaker 1: their record against the three Al division leaders, which is crazy,
- 31:37Speaker 1: you got to reel off some wins against teams at
- 31:39Speaker 1: art is good and this is the great chance to
- 31:42Speaker 1: do that. So fans keep subscribing, keep following us on
