- 1:59We have arrived boys. It only took one.
- 2:01How? How?
- 2:06It felt like forever. It felt like forever.
- 2:08It's probably only like 20 some weeks, but it felt like forever.
- 2:1220 weeks now. Hold on.
- 2:14More than 20 weeks now. More than 20 weeks because it
- 2:16was raining like cats and dogs on December 29th. 30 weeks. 30
- 2:24weeks. Call it 30.
- 2:25Weeks, 30 weeks, 30 weeks. But how's everybody been,
- 2:28Sheldon? How you doing man?
- 2:31Dude, I've been busy. I've trying to enter back into
- 2:34the workforce, been applying to some jobs, got some pretty good
- 2:37leads. That's some pretty cool places.
- 2:38So excited about that and hopefully moving out here pretty
- 2:42soon. But yeah, I've just been
- 2:43enjoying enjoying the summer off and can't wait to to get back to
- 2:48the football season. I'll be in rally with some
- 2:49friends this weekend, so watching the game from there.
- 2:52So I'm pretty excited about it. Nice tally.
- 2:54I know man. You were mentioned just a couple
- 2:56seconds ago. Your house is pretty much going
- 2:58wild right now, right? Man, we got football going on.
- 3:03My son, my daughter's in college.
- 3:06We still got baseball that we're doing.
- 3:08We're going to some camps for baseball this this fall.
- 3:12So we got to do that. We are getting ready to head to
- 3:15Nashville. That is four day weekend, going
- 3:19to be off Friday, going to be off Monday.
- 3:22And then my wife got sent home from work last night or
- 3:25yesterday sick. So we're trying to nurse
- 3:27everybody to health and make sure everybody's good to go so
- 3:30we can have a pleasant time in Nashville.
- 3:35Yeah y'all don't need to be sick and everything going to the game
- 3:38and so she just don't need to work the rest of the week she
- 3:41got. I think it's I think it's over
- 3:45for her. I'm sleeping upstairs though.
- 3:47Yeah, about to say you got you y'all, not you got to be awake
- 3:50because I know if she's still sick come Friday, she he's going
- 3:52to be like I love you but deuces.
- 3:55I got to go. I got to.
- 3:58I got to go. Mr. Siegler, what time's the
- 4:00flight leave? Thursday, man.
- 4:03I will be checking in at at 8:20, so I will be ready to roll
- 4:08wheels up sometime right around 8:20.
- 4:11So I'm excited. It's going to be a pretty,
- 4:17pretty heavy, heavy time down there.
- 4:20We got kind of thing stacked wall to wall as far as
- 4:22activities and stuff on Thursday, on Friday and then we
- 4:25got the game on Saturday and then after that I I really don't
- 4:29have anything kind of books. I'm just going to really enjoy
- 4:32the rest of the town. Well that's good to hear man
- 4:35Y'all y'all definitely enjoy it down there as much as y'all can
- 4:40because it should be an absolute blast.
- 4:42I know tons of friends of the podcast are going to be there.
- 4:45I know. Are y'all going to the Suns
- 4:47event on Friday night? I will be there.
- 4:50You'll be there, Tyler, you getting in?
- 4:51Planning on it. I'm planning on it now, yeah.
- 4:54So definitely if you're in town, they will be at our buddies at
- 4:57the Sons of Saturday's Pre party.
- 4:59Now listen, I'm gonna be straight up with y'all.
- 5:01We ain't young bucks anymore. Y'all need to get to the hotel
- 5:06by 9, OK y'all? Y'all got it?
- 5:09Y'all got to do it. If not because this is an 11:00
- 5:11AM kick. This ain't like yeah.
- 5:14So it's. Going to be early man.
- 5:17Hey hey, the event is 6 to 9. I'm planning on leaving the
- 5:20event, going back to the hotel, going to bed good.
- 5:23Not necessarily going to bed right away, but I will be at the
- 5:25hotel. He said.
- 5:28He said he ain't got no kids. He ain't got no kids though.
- 5:31He ain't going to straight to bed.
- 5:32I. Hear you, man.
- 5:34I hear you. All right.
- 5:35Well fellas, real quick news and note the guys already know about
- 5:38it, but we kind of wanted to make a quick introduction here
- 5:40use a note from Boundary Corner podcast is we are probably
- 5:44announcing a partnership with the contributor by the name of
- 5:46Miranda. Well, Miranda already writes for
- 5:50Draft Countdown native of RBA here.
- 5:53She is going to join us on the podcast hopefully either next
- 5:57week or the week after. She had some prior engagements
- 5:59this week. But here's what the deal is.
- 6:02She is going to be putting out some great written content on
- 6:05our website every now and again. You can go ahead and check out
- 6:10on the website. She's already there.
- 6:12See a little background on her. Also her socials.
- 6:14If you want to follow her, she's got a pretty good social media
- 6:17account. I got to say pretty, pretty
- 6:20witty on her account. But it's something that we've
- 6:23been working at for a while here to try to get someone on, and we
- 6:26are proud to have her join us. So be looking out for that
- 6:31stuff. Brian, you have a visitor in the
- 6:33room there, just so you know. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:35It's it's, it's the nighttime zoomies, man.
- 6:38There you go. He's getting it in all.
- 6:40Right, well, let's start. We got a lot of stuff we are
- 6:43going to do know the enemy in a little while here.
- 6:45But we got to start. Today is the first time all fall
- 6:48we saw a depth chart, a depth chart.
- 6:51So I just want to kick it around this room.
- 6:53Jonathan Talley, I am going to start with you.
- 6:56Surprises, shocks. What were you happy with?
- 6:59What made you mad? I mean, nothing really
- 7:01surprising. I think it kind of shook out how
- 7:05it's supposed to. First game we put your best foot
- 7:07forward, Benji starting, which is what I about thought, You
- 7:12know, I'd like to see Nick be a leader in that room.
- 7:15But kind of like I said when we talked last week, I mean, we
- 7:20don't know what Nick has, man. He's coming off of an injury and
- 7:23we've seen Nick play and we've seen Benji play, you know, so I
- 7:28think we're in good hands. I don't, I don't have a, you
- 7:31know, I don't, I don't see anything wrong with what
- 7:34happened in the tight end room. So I'm excited about that
- 7:38because that's, you know, that's my my group.
- 7:40So I'm excited to see what kind of production we get out of
- 7:42those guys. But other than that, man, I
- 7:44mean, Bob's on the bench. He's going to be a good, good
- 7:47depth piece for us, so I might. Sean, what about you?
- 7:52Any shocks, any surprises? Anything that stood out to you?
- 7:55Yeah, I was pretty surprised to see Braylon Moore get the nod at
- 7:58center and then shift Kaden to to right guard.
- 8:01I know they worked with some of those combos earlier, but yeah,
- 8:05I mean, kind of just doing a little bit of shuffling.
- 8:07The only thing I could think of how that would impact you is if,
- 8:10you know, the the snap comes out differently from different
- 8:12players. So obviously the guys are used
- 8:13to, you know, seeing Kaden snap. So they're gonna have to adjust
- 8:16the seeing Braylon snap. And I'm sure they got some
- 8:18practice with it, but that might be a little bit of an adjustment
- 8:20early on to to watch out for in the season is how they snap the
- 8:23ball. All right, Brian, what about
- 8:25you? Anything on the depth chart?
- 8:28Biggest surprise to me, I I was very interested to see who was
- 8:33going to be that will starter. I know we talked about that a
- 8:35lot. We saw the the Jayden Keller
- 8:38experiment is back for one more year, baby, one more year, one
- 8:43more year, the Jayden Keller experiment.
- 8:45So we'll see if it sticks this year.
- 8:49You got you got Kelly Lawson right behind him at will.
- 8:53I imagine we're going to see Kelly Lawson line up at least at
- 8:57will and star on any given down and we'll see if he works in at
- 9:02at Mike as well on some of the some some of those packages that
- 9:05we put out there. But that was the most
- 9:07interesting thing to me because, and I don't know how much of
- 9:10that has to do with, you know, Kelly missing most of the spring
- 9:13there or or what, but we're going to see Jaden Keller at
- 9:17least in the front end of that will position one more year.
- 9:19And I'm hoping that having good old Sam, that Mike linebacker is
- 9:23going to be some of the pieces falling together for him.
- 9:26Because it's never really been about the physical attributes.
- 9:29It's always been about what's up here.
- 9:31It just seemed like sometimes he just didn't get it.
- 9:35And and hopefully having somebody like Sam in the middle
- 9:37is going to help with that. Yeah, that's where the hope is
- 9:41right. It's more if he doesn't have to
- 9:42think, just go instincts when you're at the weak side
- 9:45position. Let Sam do the calls.
- 9:47We know Sam, if you didn't see the interview earlier today with
- 9:50Sam Brumfield, a little press conference, Sam's going to have
- 9:54the the communicators in his ears.
- 9:57So he's going to hear all the calls from Marv.
- 10:00While it is going to be GA responsibility, whoever is going
- 10:03to be the will is going to be responsibility to look on the
- 10:05sideline to make sure all the calls are coming in right.
- 10:08For me, there were really three things that caught my eye.
- 10:13The first one is a defensive tackle, Kelvin Gilliam getting
- 10:16the OR with Josh Fuga. There had been, you know, we,
- 10:19we, we saw Gilliam looked OK in the spring but didn't jump.
- 10:25But clearly something between summer and fall camp,
- 10:29something's clicking. He's now effectively the de
- 10:32facto starter. I'm glad to see CJ McRae on the
- 10:35depth chart after the leg injury.
- 10:37It's good to have him there. But here's the other one that
- 10:40kind of caught my eye. Look over to wide receiver room.
- 10:43We talked about that last week. We kept mentioning names.
- 10:46Take a look who the too deep is effectively in the slot to Cahi.
- 10:53The Cahit has kindly gotten a little bit lost in the in the
- 10:57shuffle of everything over the last year with, you know, the
- 11:01amazing recruits that came in and some of the other guys
- 11:03stepping up. So he's continuing to fight,
- 11:06show good things in practice. So that is mine.
- 11:12Anything else from y'all just as y'all are glancing at it or
- 11:15thinking about it again. Not really.
- 11:20Man, not really, man. I mean, I think, you know, I
- 11:22think things kind of shook out about the way we thought they
- 11:25would, all things considered. When you look at the news that
- 11:28was coming out during fall camp, you know, we kind of knew that.
- 11:32Yeah, they were, they were doing some different things.
- 11:34They were shaking up the offensive line.
- 11:35So we expected maybe a change there and not just running it
- 11:38back with the crew that we had last year.
- 11:41You know, they talked a lot about what was going on with
- 11:44different guys playing at different places at linebackers.
- 11:46So we knew to expect maybe some action there.
- 11:49Curtis, I'm kind of with you. Like the, the, the, I think Taka
- 11:52Heath is probably the biggest surprise, at least on the
- 11:56offensive side, just because I don't know if we've heard a ton
- 12:01about him outside of special teams.
- 12:03So seeing him in that depth chart is is pretty interesting.
- 12:07All righty. All right.
- 12:08Well, we're going to roll along because what goes along with the
- 12:11depth chart is if as we look, if you just look through the depth
- 12:15chart, it's so many names. And Sheldon, we know you've done
- 12:18some reading and some research about S&P.
- 12:21Give us that final breakdown that came out from Bill
- 12:24Connolly. What caught your eye and what it
- 12:28really says about the potential of this team?
- 12:31Yeah, So Hokies came in 36 overall in the the final
- 12:36preseason SP plus rankings, which is pretty solid.
- 12:39I think that's where most respectable outlets have them
- 12:41qualifying that 43rd on offense and 35th on defense.
- 12:46So the analytics are a little bit higher on the defense, which
- 12:49is a little bit surprising. I thought they I thought the
- 12:51optimist would be higher. But yeah, so I ran some
- 12:55projections, kind of looking at some playing some formulas to
- 12:59kind of get an estimate for what the win probabilities look like.
- 13:01So Vt would be favored in 10 games this year on the
- 13:05exceptions, obviously Miami and Clemson, and they would be
- 13:09projected to win about 8.3 games and five in the conference.
- 13:11So that's kind of the baseline that you're looking at, if
- 13:14you're looking at, you know, expectations based on what the
- 13:16models are saying. So can Vt over perform that?
- 13:19Obviously, we'll see. I will say though, I think the
- 13:23ACC as a conference is going to be a lot better than what
- 13:26they've been in previous years. So you look at the the rest of
- 13:29the rankings, ACC has six teams in the top 35.
- 13:33Louisville, it was almost six in the top 30.
- 13:35Louisville's at 31. So I mean, that's a pretty good,
- 13:38that's a pretty good contingent right there.
- 13:39Now, the good news for Tech is that they missed most of those
- 13:41teams, obviously with, you know, so many teams in the conference
- 13:43who can't schedule everyone. But I think the ACC could be a
- 13:46pretty solid league this year. I'm not saying it's SEC level,
- 13:49not big 10 level, but they could be a pretty solid league,
- 13:51especially at the top half. All right.
- 13:53Can I ask a quick question? I don't know if the data is in
- 13:55front of you there. So we're favored in 10 of the 12
- 13:59with the exception of Clemson and Miami.
- 14:01Does it give the projections like what's the what's the line
- 14:04on those games? Like we're going to Miami week 5
- 14:06right now. It's projecting -7 Miami -3 does
- 14:10it give things like that? So I don't, I haven't calculated
- 14:13that I could. I could look up in a second, but
- 14:15I just have the win probabilities which I could pull
- 14:16up in a second here. But yeah, I mean, most of the
- 14:20win probabilities probabilities are kind of like in the 60 to 80
- 14:24range. So it's kind of like you expect
- 14:26to win and if you play well, you're gonna win.
- 14:28But there's always some that could go wrong.
- 14:31It's not like we're talking about 90 plus percent win
- 14:33probability. It's very much a take care of
- 14:35business and play a clean game. You can win otherwise, you know,
- 14:39you could. You could come out on the losing
- 14:40end, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:42What's the, what's the probability of wins for Clemson
- 14:44and Miami? I just want to know like where
- 14:46they, you know, are we that 90%? Are we the 10% for those two
- 14:50games? I'll give you a second.
- 14:52Chris, yeah, give me one quick SEC to look it up here.
- 14:54So I see, look, the stats say we're going to probably win 10
- 14:58games, y'all see? Yeah, so, so Miami's at 30% and
- 15:04Clemson is at 34%. So like I said, we knew
- 15:08terrible. Yeah.
- 15:09So when you look at the kind of the range of outcomes, it's
- 15:12pretty condensed. Like there's really, there's not
- 15:13a ton of games in the conference where Tech is, you know, favored
- 15:16extremely highly. But on the flip side, not a lot
- 15:18of games where they're favored very lowly.
- 15:20So I think it's going to come down to just, you know, the the
- 15:23craziness of the sport, the lucky bounces and everything and
- 15:25just execution really. So I think I think there's going
- 15:28to be a lot of pretty, pretty close ball games this year.
- 15:33Nice. And I mean, we saw it last year
- 15:35that the Hokies did pretty well, especially once Kyron drones got
- 15:39in the game of handling the games where you know those toss
- 15:43up games are those those 5050 games are the games that we were
- 15:45favored in. They manage those pretty well,
- 15:48especially at home. So hopefully that that trend
- 15:50continues for the Hokie this year.
- 15:52Yeah. And then just a couple of the
- 15:53really small notes. So looking around the
- 15:56conference, Rutgers is, I know it's not conference, but looking
- 16:00at the schedule, Rutgers is actually pretty solid.
- 16:02They're top 50. So that's gonna be, you know,
- 16:03right around a 69% win probability.
- 16:06You know, Stanford and BC aren't projected to be great.
- 16:09Georgia Tech's pretty solid, but, you know, more middle of
- 16:12the pack. And then Syracuse a little bit
- 16:15lower. Duke is actually higher than I
- 16:17thought they would be for some reason.
- 16:18The SP Plus is pretty high on Duke.
- 16:19They have them at 51st. I'm not sure about that given
- 16:22how much production they lost. But I mean, we'll see.
- 16:25We'll see. We'll see how it plays out.
- 16:27Nice. Well, thanks again for that
- 16:30data, Sheldon. I know that probably something
- 16:32we would have gotten last week from you as we were running
- 16:34through everything, but it's always out there.
- 16:36It's good to know the seeing, I mean, it's, it's so many
- 16:39different ways you can look at a season.
- 16:41We look at the personnel coming back, you look at statistics,
- 16:43you look at the probabilities and all of it matters in some
- 16:47way, shape or form. But you know what else matters?
- 16:50Injuries and I got to say this from from watching the presser
- 16:58today, we are coming out of camp relatively healthy and if y'all
- 17:03didn't hear, the only guy that is like a toss up this week is
- 17:07tally the aforementioned Nick Gallo, which that's not shocking
- 17:11I don't think. I mean, guys coming off of me,
- 17:13right? Right.
- 17:15So. Let's see.
- 17:16Plus he's like our age. I think he's like 30.
- 17:21So not saying he can't, not saying he ain't helping the
- 17:25team. I'm just saying like, man, if
- 17:27Sheldon get injured and I get injured, he's probably going to
- 17:30bounce back way faster than me. So the the youth helps.
- 17:35Can I say something else besides all this good stuff that we
- 17:37talking about? You know what still burns me up,
- 17:40man? You know what I've been looking
- 17:41at? I've been looking at a lot of
- 17:42social media and it's great to get like, you know, some hype.
- 17:46I'm not the kind of person. Well, we need to stay hidden so
- 17:49you know, we don't lose. Like give me all the hype if we
- 17:53deserve, if the kids have, the young men have earned it, give
- 17:57it to them all the accolades. Can y'all please get my
- 18:00quarterback's name right? Stop calling him Kyron.
- 18:05Stop calling him that's not his name.
- 18:07So we might be small potatoes. Can somebody send this to most
- 18:12of these outlets and tell them how to pronounce his name?
- 18:16His name is Kyron. Like Byron with AK Kyron drones,
- 18:21please get that right. You're going to call his name,
- 18:23Get it right? I know he's listening.
- 18:25That one's for you, Kevin. That is for you, Kevin.
- 18:29Kevin in the house. Stop messing up, Stop messing up
- 18:32our quarterback name, all right? I'm going to do this our our
- 18:36musical guru who has a little something later.
- 18:39He's already Sheldon. He's paying attention.
- 18:42He sent me this message Right now.
- 18:44As it stands, Miami is an 8 1/2 point favorite for that game in
- 18:48September. Clemson is a four and a half
- 18:51point favorite now. That's November.
- 18:54You. You knew.
- 18:54You knew. Jason knew it.
- 18:56Oh, I know he did. You, you knew he knew what the
- 18:59what the stuff was. Oh yeah, so.
- 19:01He said so. So he said eight one more time.
- 19:048 1/2 for Miami. 8 1/2 Yeah. Miami Land 8 1/2.
- 19:08And a flat 4 for Clemson. No 4 1/2 for Clemson, 4 1/2.
- 19:12OK, so I had I had close to 8 1/2 for Miami and closer to
- 19:14seven for Clemson. Oh, OK, not, not not too far
- 19:17off. And again, it's obviously it's
- 19:18going to change, you know, we'll see more games then but.
- 19:21Absolutely. More games get in the data,
- 19:23start shaping and reshaping and you know, you know, talk a
- 19:27little. You talked about Georgia Tech
- 19:29being middle of the pack. Let's let's talk about Week 0
- 19:31real quick before we get into some other stuff.
- 19:34We sure we want to talk about Week zero.
- 19:36I do. Yes, we do.
- 19:37Yes. We do.
- 19:39I'm sticking up to my quarterback again.
- 19:40Go ahead, Curtis. So let's talk about the Florida
- 19:44State Georgia Tech game. I got to watch about 2 1/2
- 19:49quarters and DJ, that man can't throw the ball down field or he
- 19:56gets mine numbed and then forgets to throw the ball down
- 19:59field and holds it. You can't win football games
- 20:02that way. Go ahead, Tally, I know you.
- 20:05You itching. Hold on, hold on.
- 20:07Wait. Tally, stop.
- 20:08Some something went on here. Everybody is a super,
- 20:12Everybody's a superstar. They don't want me to say it.
- 20:17Say it. Am I?
- 20:19Am I chopping up? Am I good?
- 20:22Can y'all hear me? We.
- 20:23Can hear you. Everybody's a superstar until
- 20:25you get hit it. DJ was getting hit, Georgia Tech
- 20:29was hitting his ass. But that ain't what I want to
- 20:33talk about. Florida State fans, first of
- 20:36all, you motherfuckers, they are the worst at jumping on people's
- 20:40shit, trying to talk about whatever they want to talk
- 20:44about. Man, I've seen that so many
- 20:46clips when they was Virginia Tech versus Florida State, like
- 20:51they went on, you know, when Karen goes on the, on the on the
- 20:54podcast and he's talking about #1 Y'all didn't watch it.
- 20:58People didn't watch it. You just took a, a, a clip and
- 21:01start going crazy. Oh, he said Florida State wasn't
- 21:04that good. I was a day game.
- 21:06All he was getting beat. All this was his stat line.
- 21:08Go watch what he said, Go watch the clip.
- 21:11First of all, that's number one. But like I said last week, we're
- 21:15going to, I'm going to get off that for right now.
- 21:17I said I needed to see Norville's team this year
- 21:21because Norville is a coach that builds.
- 21:24He's not really a coach that reloads.
- 21:27It took him a while to get that team where they looked like they
- 21:31looked last year, three years, and this year they didn't look
- 21:34like the same team. That's all I'm going to say.
- 21:37I ain't going to beat them down too much.
- 21:39I know we got Kevin in here. I know you got family down now,
- 21:42but I got to say fuck Florida State.
- 21:45What you got, Phil? Sean, did you freeze Observation
- 21:51Shelton from the Florida State Georgia Tech game?
- 21:54So unfortunately I was actually out getting some vitamin DI can.
- 21:58So I wasn't able to, to watch a ton, but I did see, I did see
- 22:02some of the, the postgame analytics.
- 22:04Bill Conley has the the postgame, but expectancy, I
- 22:07think it was 97% for Georgia Tech.
- 22:09So they, they actually really dominated that game.
- 22:11Pound for pound. I think the score was a little
- 22:13bit closer than than the, the disparity one suggested.
- 22:16So that was a pretty a pretty dominating win.
- 22:19Ron, I know you were doing stuff Saturday, but I'm assuming you
- 22:21came back checked the. Bottle I came back in and
- 22:24checked everything out and you know, I I think it's going to be
- 22:27the latter of what you mentioned there.
- 22:30Curtis, we saw this at Clemson. It did rear its ugly head quite
- 22:36as much last year. We're back at it where DJ you
- 22:41just does not know how to get the ball down the field.
- 22:44He is risk averse with the football and he he is checking
- 22:50down. If it's not in that, you know, 5
- 22:54to 15 yard range, he is either not taking it or inaccurate when
- 22:58he does take it. So at at some point you got to
- 23:03pull the trigger. You got to you got to take shots
- 23:05downfield. You got to make sure that you
- 23:06can press the ball and push the defense and stretch the defense
- 23:10and make them have to work. Because right now, where his
- 23:13bread and butter is, it's all clogged up because no one's
- 23:16concerned about him taking shots.
- 23:18Just press man, leave one over the top, make him have to make
- 23:24decision and and it's not good right now for them.
- 23:27What I'll also say, Sheldon, I'm glad you dropped that stat on
- 23:30here because what we got to think about Georgia Tech, if
- 23:34your win probability is 97% and you win the game by three, that
- 23:39says something to me. Because if I'm hearing the way
- 23:41the analytics said is Georgia Tech should have won that game
- 23:44handily without an absolute problem.
- 23:45And literally, well, literally there's two plays that have to
- 23:48happen. A, You get very lucky that you
- 23:52catch a swing pass and the guy gets 18 yards up field to put
- 23:54you in field goal range. B.
- 23:56And I'm not trying to take up the Florida State here.
- 23:58That kid stepped out of bounds. That stop should have that stop
- 24:01clock should have stopped with 40 seconds left.
- 24:04I don't think Florida State probably could have come back,
- 24:09but still, all that to say, everything in the data world
- 24:14says you should have killed this team and you barely scraped him
- 24:17by. Says a lot about Georgia Tech
- 24:19there. All right, let's flip it over to
- 24:21tonight game to the SMU Nevada game.
- 24:24Sheldon, did you make a comment or something?
- 24:25Because I remember reading something laughing my ass off
- 24:28about SMU during the ACCG 5 teams.
- 24:34I honestly don't remember. You don't remember so basically
- 24:37Shelton made the comment. I can't remember where it was.
- 24:40We we chat on multiple devices. Basically Sheldon said hey look,
- 24:44SMU is getting the cordial the normal ACC welcome.
- 24:47You're playing AG5 team and you are getting you're looking like
- 24:50absolute dog shit. So that game also if if SMU
- 24:58brings that to the party this year, Dang, they may make a bowl
- 25:02game because they didn't look good at all.
- 25:04And that was I mean. That that's a, that's a team
- 25:07that was very offensive forward last year and it took them 3/4
- 25:14to wake up in that one. Yeah.
- 25:17And they got a safety. Yeah.
- 25:19You also said that, Sheldon. I don't know what you were doing
- 25:21Saturday night, but Sheldon was like shotgun in the end zone.
- 25:25That was beyond Beyoncé. See, I could, I'm not saying I
- 25:28could be an offensive coordinator at the at the at the
- 25:30power five level, but I know I'd be not stupid enough to do that.
- 25:34Shotgun out of the end zone when your online can't get a push.
- 25:37Man, some of these coaches dude. You can't get a push.
- 25:41You're you're, you've been struggling to move the ball now
- 25:43for a little bit and then you know that they're going to bring
- 25:48everything. I mean, what do they have to
- 25:50lose at that point? And then you know.
- 25:53I'll just do that. And, and, and that to me, that
- 25:56was the, that was the hinge point.
- 25:57Kelly, I don't know if you got the chance to watch that game,
- 25:59but that was the hinge point Saturday night when that safety
- 26:02happened. Yeah, I watched a little bit of
- 26:03it, but I mean the week one stuff or week zero stuff, you
- 26:09know, like I think somebody put it in the chat, you know, we
- 26:12better have the run defense fixed by, let's say Jim.
- 26:15Jim said that. Jim West, he says we better have
- 26:18a run defense fixed before we face Georgia Tech.
- 26:21We ain't even seen the run defense.
- 26:23We don't know if it's good or bad.
- 26:24We don't we don't know what we got.
- 26:27I mean, I hope we play good Saturday, but we don't know.
- 26:30We don't know what we going to do.
- 26:32So can't have so much overreaction or you know, also
- 26:39you can't put some some stuff you got to you got to address
- 26:42it. Florida State has to address.
- 26:44I don't feel like it's an overreaction when you seen
- 26:46somebody play college football for seven years.
- 26:49He is who he is, the quarterback that's he's going to give you
- 26:53what he's going to give you. He kind of, you know, went off
- 26:56last year. But look at the defense he
- 26:57played against. Those defenses aren't as
- 26:59physical as over here. So that's not an overreaction
- 27:02for Florida State fans or people.
- 27:04Look at Florida State and go, hey, if that's what he's going
- 27:06to roll out, they're not going to be very successful.
- 27:08But Jim, slow your roll. Let's see Georgia Tech when we
- 27:13see him. Exactly.
- 27:14And the whole thing is watching some of the Florida State
- 27:17linebackers make I mean, you know, I had like flashbacks
- 27:20watching some runs in that game because those that week's out
- 27:23linebacker stuck his head the wrong way like three times.
- 27:26And just outside. It's like I remember that from
- 27:29last year. Let's not do that again this
- 27:31year. But we got game one to see.
- 27:35So we are about to get into know the enemy.
- 27:38But before that, just a quick again, shout out to our sponsor
- 27:41Counts Family Pharmacy down on three O 1 S Main St.
- 27:45Go see Jeremy and the crew down there when you are in town,
- 27:49hopefully next weekend. And again, I'm pumping this out
- 27:52for all y'all listening with if you're a student or you have
- 27:55friends or family that are students.
- 27:57Down in Blacksburg, Friday at Gobbler Fest on the drill
- 28:01fields, Counts Pharmacy will be on site where students can
- 28:04register to win APS 5 courtesy of the Counts Family Pharmacy.
- 28:12So now we get to know the enemy. So for the first time this year
- 28:15we have been looking up and down, looking at rosters,
- 28:18reading things, talking about different players and we are
- 28:21going to know the end of the the enemy in Vanderbilt and we are
- 28:26going to start on the offensive side of the ball.
- 28:28Brian got in the film room this week.
- 28:30I know y'all were looking at stuff too.
- 28:32I know Sean looking at data, Tally looking at stuff, me
- 28:36looking at stuff, but Brian usually gets in the film room
- 28:38for a few hours and break some stuff down.
- 28:40So Brian, let's talk about this offense that was not that good
- 28:45last year. Wasn't that good and very much a
- 28:48new look offense this year. You got Tim Beck coming over.
- 28:53OC had the same role there at New Mexico State under Jerry
- 28:57Kill. Speaking of Kill is also on
- 29:01board as the chief consultant to Clark Lee.
- 29:03So you get you get two of those former New Mexico State coaches
- 29:09coming in and obviously Hokie fans know a little bit about
- 29:12Jerry Kill from his time here under the Fuente era and kind of
- 29:18masterminding the 2019 turn around, if you will.
- 29:22So what to expect under Tim Back?
- 29:25It's going to be a rush heavy offense overall.
- 29:29Very much a quarterback is going to be active in the running
- 29:34game, whoever is behind center. We think it's going to be Diego
- 29:39Pavia, but he is the captain. So heavy, heavy quarterback
- 29:44impact in the run game, passing game is more about getting those
- 29:48explosive plays down the field off of play action and taking
- 29:51advantage of kind of those rush effective defense alignments and
- 29:54calls that will be in there because of their propensity to
- 29:57run the football. And so look for a heavy dose of
- 30:00those, those rushing attacks mixed in with some of those
- 30:03shots downfield. All righty.
- 30:06Well, you mentioned his name already.
- 30:08Let's talk about Diego Pavia. Sheldon, you did a little dive
- 30:11on some of his stats and analytics.
- 30:14Obviously he played started at New Mexico State last year under
- 30:17Beck and Kill. What is?
- 30:18What's kind of it showing from a, you know, statistical side?
- 30:23So he finished 26 overall last year in PFF grade, which is
- 30:27pretty solid. That's for all FBS quarterbacks.
- 30:30Trying to break down a little bit how he throws the ball.
- 30:32His accuracy is OK, not not great.
- 30:35Not terrible either. Pretty good in the short game,
- 30:38his office line did a pretty good job of, of giving him time
- 30:40to throw. And he was also pretty good
- 30:42under pressure and he was pressured a lot.
- 30:44Although according to PFF, they, they attributed a pretty high
- 30:47percentage of those pressures to him.
- 30:49So it remains to be seen. You know, how he's gonna, how
- 30:51he's gonna handle that and the decisions he makes in the pocket
- 30:54when he was pressured. But like Brian alluded to, he
- 30:57does run a lot. Second in FPS last year with 57
- 31:01scrambles on the season. So if you get, if you get to
- 31:04him, he's gonna run. That's his, you know, that's his
- 31:06instinct. He's good guy out of the pocket.
- 31:08I don't think he was super efficient when scrambling just
- 31:11based on the the yards per carry there.
- 31:13But he's going to he's going to get a lot.
- 31:14So you got to make sure you you contain with your defensive end.
- 31:18And Brian, you then you obviously looked at the tape
- 31:22showing you got the data there. What's from here, What Sheldon's
- 31:25got to say on the data and you're looking at the tape what,
- 31:27what's kind of your take on Diego?
- 31:30I like to call him a Teemu or wish.com Johnny Manziel.
- 31:35He's a lot slower, a lot less effective down the field, but
- 31:41still an effective thrower, but more effective with his legs
- 31:44than with his arm, in my opinion.
- 31:46Not super fast. He's got some pretty good wiggle
- 31:49and a little, little elusive, kind of, you know, breaking
- 31:52tackles and things like that. But he's not going to, you know,
- 31:55win any track meets or anything like that.
- 31:58As Sheldon alluded to, he's effective in the short passing
- 32:00game, but we'll take some shots and he he will hit on those not
- 32:05with great efficiency, but but not awful as either.
- 32:08He, he, he will hit on some of those and that's kind of where
- 32:11we need to watch out for those big plays just because it will
- 32:13be such a rush heavy attack. He will turn the ball over, but
- 32:17he's not exactly a turnover machine.
- 32:20I think he had what, like 9 interceptions last year against,
- 32:24you know what, the 25 touchdowns.
- 32:26So not a not an awful ratio there, but he's not somebody
- 32:30that's going to be super protected with the football
- 32:32either. Yeah, and, and just a quick a
- 32:34quick note, he and Karen Jones are right next to each other in
- 32:38the PFF rankings in terms of turnover where he plays.
- 32:41So just to give you a feel for for the rate at which he, you
- 32:43know, makes risky decisions with the ball, he's pretty much
- 32:45right, identical to Karen Jones. All righty.
- 32:49All righty. So there's a little bit on
- 32:52Diego. Definitely someone to keep an
- 32:54eye on even though I'm trying to figure out how Vandy's saying
- 32:58that it's an OR situation with their quarterback room I.
- 33:03I think that's you named him the you don't name a quarterback a
- 33:06captain and then not not play. Him.
- 33:09At least week 1. At least week one.
- 33:12All right. We know a coach who did some.
- 33:13Stuff shout out Grant Wills. What was that tally?
- 33:18We know a coach who did some stuff like that all the.
- 33:22Time. Just true, Just true.
- 33:24All right, I'm going to make this real quick even though he's
- 33:27not playing in this game. They lost one of actually, they
- 33:31lost a couple really good wide receivers last year.
- 33:34One went to Georgia. His name's escaping me right
- 33:37now. I thought I wrote it down.
- 33:38It didn't. The other one we're going to
- 33:39have to contend with in October and that's Jayden McGowan.
- 33:42He was one of their most versatile receivers last year,
- 33:44had some rushes. We're going to see him later in
- 33:46the season, but he's not on the team and then they lost one to
- 33:49Georgia. So you know that so Tally, who
- 33:53can they throw the ball to? But they.
- 33:55Got a 6-7 tight end 67243 Cole Spence.
- 34:01So Cole was a three star, three star prospect.
- 34:04He had says he had about 23 offers.
- 34:07I'm looking at kind of the best offers that he had was maybe
- 34:11like UCF or you know me at schools like that.
- 34:14But I looked up and didn't find any stats on him from last year,
- 34:18but they saying that he is who they will be looking at to throw
- 34:25the ball to at tight end. What you got on him, Brian?
- 34:29Yeah. The big thing that I'm reading
- 34:30is that, I mean, they they really lost a lot of their
- 34:33production from a wide receiver standpoint.
- 34:35They've got some pretty effective tight ends both on the
- 34:38roster and guys that came in. But apparently the guy that has
- 34:41stood out the most in spring in the scrimmages has been Cole
- 34:47Spence. Really good rapport with Diego
- 34:49Pavia. He's expected to be the guy
- 34:52that's going to be the targets in those intermediate passes
- 34:55that we talked about in in going to be the red zone target in the
- 34:58passing game. So look for him, he's he's a big
- 35:01target. He's a big guy.
- 35:03Tally, you spoke to him, didn't have any 2023 stats.
- 35:06He was injured in 2023, played mostly special teams in 2022.
- 35:11So he's a guy that is kind of really having his first season
- 35:15as a primary playmaker, but but it's by all accounts, he seems
- 35:20to be the guy that's flashed the most heading into the start of
- 35:24the season. Yeah, 100% any, any six
- 35:29seventies, 245 lbs, that is a big target to hit out there.
- 35:33So even if Pavia does have issues with the short
- 35:35humanitarian passing game, somebody that size, it is going
- 35:38to be tough to miss. Let's be real on that.
- 35:41All right, I decided to do a little bit more digging, trying
- 35:44to find out what is going on with the rushing on this team.
- 35:48Obviously that Diego, but first time he's playing at Vanderbilt.
- 35:53He was at New Mexico State last year in the CUSA.
- 35:56I'm sure Shelton could dig up and tell me what rank the CUSA
- 35:59was last year. As far as conferences go,
- 36:03they're champion, not great. Their champion, if y'all don't
- 36:06remember, was Liberty and we saw what happened to Liberty when
- 36:08they played Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl.
- 36:10That was not an entertaining game.
- 36:12I need entertaining games during the winter.
- 36:14If not, I get really bored. But let's talk about their run
- 36:17game. I want to talk about Cedric
- 36:20Alexander. He is their leading rusher when
- 36:24he came out in 2023. Five.
- 36:27You're you're laughing. Oh, Brian, are you going to pull
- 36:29up the stat? I'll let you.
- 36:30Pull up. You pull up the stat.
- 36:31I'll talk about it. You pull up, OK, I'll pull up
- 36:34the stat. You talk about it, but just a
- 36:36little background on Cedric Alexander.
- 36:38He was a three star recruit when he came out of, believe it or
- 36:42not, he came out of Austin, TX five, nine, £200.
- 36:46He was a three star at 87. And if you take a look here at
- 36:49his kind of recruiting list, it wasn't actually all that bad.
- 36:56I mean, you know, you take a look, Iowa State, I always feel
- 37:00like Iowa State's gets they get good football players, UTSA,
- 37:05they're doing good things down here.
- 37:06But overall, for a guy to be rated in 87, the offer list
- 37:11doesn't say that. And I don't know if it's one of
- 37:13those things where Vanderbilt offered early, he committed
- 37:17early, he was done or something happened.
- 37:19But his stats last year, just so all you all know, he was their
- 37:23leading rusher, 96 rushes, 371 yards, 3.9 a carry with four
- 37:31touchdowns. Big Yikes.
- 37:34And Sheldon's going to get into that in a few minutes.
- 37:36Why? It's a big Yikes.
- 37:37But Brian, you watch some tape on him.
- 37:39What's it say about him? A lot of it's not his fault.
- 37:44He's it's it's more his rushing style combined with what
- 37:47Shelton's going to talk about. And I'll kind of piggyback on
- 37:50here in a little bit, but this is a guy, I mean, he's very much
- 37:54a steady Eddie in the rushing game.
- 37:57He is not a game breaker. He is not a big play threat.
- 38:00He is a guy that's going to go out there and get the yards that
- 38:03the that the play is drawn up and he'll maybe get you a few
- 38:06more after contact. He's kind of wouldn't call him a
- 38:08plotter, but kind of a guy that that you expect to get between
- 38:13the tackles, get a few extra yards and and and go down.
- 38:18Like I said, get good at getting some yards after contact in
- 38:20there and you sparingly in the passing game as well.
- 38:24More of a check down thread in the passing game.
- 38:26They're not using him as a dynamic weapon or anything like
- 38:28that. He's just he's a guy that would
- 38:30be a good like second or third option on most Power five teams,
- 38:34but he's their leading rusher. So there you go.
- 38:38He's their leading rusher. And so Shelton, when a team has
- 38:43a leading rusher of 371 yards, what does the offensive line
- 38:47data say for them last year? I know it's last year and
- 38:50they've got new players, but you know you can't flip everybody
- 38:54over. Yeah, boy, it was.
- 38:56It was rough for The Commodores. So we'll start off with this.
- 39:00Last year they were 126 in the country in yards per rush under
- 39:06three. And I know that includes sacks,
- 39:07but still pretty rough 110th and PFF Rumbach and grade also
- 39:12pretty rough. So you know, they had some
- 39:14explosive plays, but you know, the real issue for them was
- 39:16their success rate, which is basically how you keep up with
- 39:19the sticks staying on schedule. They were 123rd in the country
- 39:23and success rate at 36%. So you know, that was that was
- 39:26their issue. They just couldn't, they just
- 39:27couldn't get a push, couldn't stay on track.
- 39:29Now, in terms of the individuals on the O line, they have a
- 39:34center transferred in from Mississippi State.
- 39:36That's Steven Lasoya and then a tackle Chase Mitchell came in
- 39:40from Liberty, started for the flames last year.
- 39:42But other other than that, you know, you've got three returning
- 39:45starters. They're all seniors.
- 39:46And if I look at that as a tech fan, I'm pretty I'm pretty happy
- 39:49with that because that means that, you know, there's not
- 39:52there's not a ton of room for improvement there when you're
- 39:53bringing back three guys from, you know, one of the worst
- 39:56opposite lines of the country last year.
- 39:58And all those guys being seniors, they realistically.
- 40:00Don't have a ton of room to grow.
- 40:02So it's going to be, it's going to be a tougher friend to build.
- 40:05I mean, I know they've, you know, they got some new pieces
- 40:07in, but man, they were just, they were so bad last year.
- 40:10I think just based on, you know, kind of where they're at in
- 40:12their rebuild, it's going to be it's going to be a lot of tough
- 40:15slide. Just even get back to a common
- 40:17level of online play. Yeah, Yeah.
- 40:19I kind of expect baby steps in that for that offensive line
- 40:23versus any significant jump where you'll see statistically
- 40:27things that stand out to you just just just bad.
- 40:31Like I, I really don't, I really don't have another way to to put
- 40:35it, You know, poor footwork for a lot of these guys, just not
- 40:41being at the right place at the right time.
- 40:44Pass pro, not very good. Sheldon Allude does, you know,
- 40:47some of those statistics even, you know, bringing them down
- 40:50even further when you factor in this, the sacs, the SAC yardage,
- 40:54adding into that, that rush yardage.
- 40:57So it, it was really not a good year for this, this offensive
- 41:00line. And and to Sheldon's point,
- 41:03they've addressed some things, but I don't know if they've done
- 41:05enough to take anything more than a baby step forward from a
- 41:09production standpoint. Yeah, and I'm going to say this,
- 41:13I mentioned McCown. McCown last year was their third
- 41:17leading receiver and he actually was the 2nd in total yards from
- 41:22scrimmage, but he went to BC. Their second guy, the one is
- 41:26London Humphreys who went to Georgia.
- 41:28He averaged over 20 a catch and their leading receiver last year
- 41:32will Shepard. Do y'all think he's still on the
- 41:34roster tally? You're right, he ain't.
- 41:37Guess where he went? Not Georgia.
- 41:41He went to Colorado with Dionne. So in in.
- 41:46So they're returning leading returning receivers.
- 41:50Junior, Cheryl. Who?
- 41:5320 passes for 293 yards last year and three touchdowns.
- 41:57That's their leading guy coming back.
- 41:59So you're talking about a team who was two and 10 last year
- 42:03whose best three offensive players clearly probably were
- 42:06good offensive players. Because I don't believe that a
- 42:08guy like Bill O'Brien would go get somebody.
- 42:10I don't believe Dion would go get somebody.
- 42:12I don't believe Kirby Smart would go get guys and bring them
- 42:16in unless they showed significant skills.
- 42:18So you're talking about taking those three guys away along with
- 42:21the troubles on the offensive line that Sheldon and Brian are
- 42:23going here. So it's, you know, it's
- 42:25definitely tough sledding for that offense.
- 42:29So there's kind of the offense, by all means, we're looking at
- 42:33our breakdowns. We know it's a new season, but
- 42:35when it's a new season, you got to look at what's old.
- 42:37You got to see where they were last year.
- 42:38Can they improve? It'll be really interesting to
- 42:41see what Jerry Kiel can do for them.
- 42:43Now I'm a flip over to the defensive side of the ball.
- 42:46And Brian, let's talk about this because Clarkley fired some
- 42:51people. Yeah, Clarkley said.
- 42:56Thank you. I will take the reins and and
- 43:00probably to his benefit, I think the defense has not had a great
- 43:06run here in the last couple years.
- 43:10And obviously Lee's background is defensive coordinator running
- 43:15that 425 defense, kind of that Elko esque style defense.
- 43:24They call the Rover the anchor now, though, So just, you know,
- 43:27that's obnoxious. Welcome to that.
- 43:32I'm I'm kind of getting a little tired of like rebranding a, a
- 43:35name based on whatever your, you know, your your theme is as your
- 43:41team. So that that gets a little old.
- 43:43But yeah, it's a Rover, guy plays anchor, and the philosophy
- 43:47is kind of the same as those Mike Elko teams.
- 43:50You know, it's a focus on team defense.
- 43:53You want to limit the big plays, you want to skies pressure and
- 43:55coverages to create confusion in the passing game, in the running
- 43:59games. That's the big, big philosophies
- 44:01for them. And I think looking at it
- 44:03historically, at least before that Lee took over, the thing
- 44:09that they did not do well was limit those big plays.
- 44:11So that that's the thing to look at.
- 44:14Can they continue? Are they going to continue in
- 44:16that trend? Are they going to do something a
- 44:18little different to limit those big plays?
- 44:20Yeah, 100%. Real quick about Clark Lee, His
- 44:23three most prominent years were at Notre Dame before he took
- 44:25this job. And his highest ranked total
- 44:28defense in those years was only 18th.
- 44:31Yeah, he did stay in the top 30 for all three.
- 44:33That's good. But it's definitely a talent.
- 44:35Sperry, from getting what you can get at Notre Dame, what you
- 44:37can get here. On to a quick shout out.
- 44:39We got Lavar. I have not seen him in a while.
- 44:41Lavar's back, everybody. Lavar.
- 44:44Lavar, thank you for rejoining us.
- 44:46We hadn't seen you a while. Hope all has been well.
- 44:48He's waiting on the season. He's waiting on see.
- 44:50And your boy Tally, he's a Miami boy.
- 44:55He back. King, thank you for tuning in.
- 45:01Man. We.
- 45:02Appreciate it. And you're right, September 27th
- 45:04can't get here fast enough. Take care of business.
- 45:06All right, Sheldon, Brian just mentioned it.
- 45:11He fired people. Can you tell us why he had to
- 45:13make this move when it comes to some of their defensive
- 45:16statistics from last year? Yeah, Vanderbilt was bad at
- 45:20pretty much everything. And in particular, you know, you
- 45:23look at the past defense, they had some Charles at corner this
- 45:27year. I know a couple other guys are
- 45:28injured. So, you know, not sure what
- 45:29we're going to see this year, but a couple a couple key stats
- 45:33with regards to their past defense.
- 45:35They were 128th and open field yards allowance that looks at
- 45:39yards 10 plus runs or excuse me, runs of 10 plus yards overall.
- 45:44So 128th there. And then, you know, they
- 45:48generated very little, almost no havoc.
- 45:50Havoc prefers to sacks, hurries, you know, deflections,
- 45:55pressures, basically anything you can kind of do to annoy the
- 45:57point to get in their face a little bit.
- 45:58They just didn't really generate a ton of a ton of havoc in that
- 46:02in that department, especially in their front seven.
- 46:06And then they're like I said, they're bad at pretty much
- 46:08everything statistically, but there were statistic was their
- 46:11success rate on passing plays. So 132nd just a reference there.
- 46:15There are only 133 yes, 133 FPS teams.
- 46:20They were 132nd and passing success rate allowed.
- 46:23So they they did not stop anything.
- 46:26I mean, you you dropped back to pass man you you got a pretty
- 46:29good shot, at least of you know, keeping keeping the six move and
- 46:32stand on schedule. So it was rough and I know
- 46:35they've got some guys banged up. So I don't know how much better
- 46:38it's going to get to pass with you, Curtis.
- 46:40Yeah, it is true, because there are what we'll talk about a
- 46:44little while, those names. But Tally, we still got to try
- 46:47to find. All right, who's somebody that
- 46:49might give us problems? And Tally, I know you.
- 46:51You looked up and threw something over to Brown.
- 46:53Who's the guy you looked at? Yeah, they got Mr. CJ Taylor.
- 46:57He is out of Warren County, Tennessee.
- 47:01He was a three star recruit. He had about 59 tackles total
- 47:06tackles last year, couple of picks.
- 47:08So seems to be a pretty, you know, solid player.
- 47:12Brian, what you owe and you know, offers out of high school
- 47:15he had about 8 offers. Vanderbilt definitely was his
- 47:19best offer of the offers were Army, Austin P, Eastern Kentucky
- 47:22schools of that nature. Brian, what you got on Mr. CJ?
- 47:27Yeah, this seems to be a guy that is a one of those
- 47:29development monsters, a guy that wasn't really recruited highly.
- 47:33That is what kind of turned his game into something pretty big.
- 47:36Definitely their best player on the defense, far and away kind
- 47:41of a balanced. He plays at anchor safety that I
- 47:43talked about that that Rover position.
- 47:46He's balanced against the run in the past.
- 47:49Like I said, really only impact player on their back end.
- 47:53They use him kind of all over the place.
- 47:55He blitzes, he's in run support, he's got a, you know, a couple
- 47:58sacks here and there. He's forced some fumbles and he
- 48:01got a couple picks. So he's a guy that does a little
- 48:03bit of everything for them, but he's really their only impact
- 48:06player on the defense other than a couple other guys that are
- 48:10kind of more kind of Steady Eddie.
- 48:13All right, yeah. So that's their best on the back
- 48:16end and they're back in. I mean, Sheldon, you already
- 48:18alluded to it. It was rough last year.
- 48:20So they went out in the portal and they got a guy by the name
- 48:22of Marlon Jones. Marlon Jones was an Eastern
- 48:25Washington guy. Eastern Washington always a
- 48:27pretty good FCS program. In the last really last decade,
- 48:31he had played in 40 games at Eastern Washington before he
- 48:34entered the portal. He had got 9 interceptions, 23
- 48:37pass deflections in his rib. That is pretty good numbers at
- 48:41any level of football. But unfortunately for them, him
- 48:44he basically is out for the season, personal health issue.
- 48:47He did not report to fall camp. So that is a huge loss because
- 48:50clearly you see that statistical, you know, you see
- 48:54that stats, it's like he's probably going to be competing
- 48:56for a starting job. And then if that wasn't bad
- 48:59enough, another transfer on this guy came from Southern Illinois
- 49:06and also went to Buffalo by the name of Mark Davis, had rotated
- 49:12in with cornerbacks, looked like he was probably going to have
- 49:15some sort of role in their cornerback room.
- 49:17Tears his Achilles a couple weeks in the camp.
- 49:20So now we're sitting here and you're talking about a bad pass
- 49:24defense last year. They clearly addressed it.
- 49:26They went out and found a probably a diamond in the rough
- 49:29and Marlin probably a steady guy in Mark.
- 49:32And now they're gone. So they're almost back to where
- 49:34they were last year. And I mean, it's just, hey, it
- 49:39sucks. First of all, you don't want to
- 49:40wish injury upon any kid. And these kids are playing their
- 49:43hearts out and that stinks. But I mean, so they're going to
- 49:49have to roll what they had last year, which was 132 at 1:33.
- 49:52That's not good. That's not good at all.
- 49:57Yeah, it's going to be definitely an uphill battle for
- 50:01that defense. Like I said, you got one
- 50:04playmaker out there, you got a couple others, you know, pretty
- 50:07steady guys out there. But to to Shelton's point,
- 50:11nobody that's really creating a lot of havoc.
- 50:15So this isn't A-Team that's going to disrupt your your
- 50:19schedule very much. Whether it's whether it's sacks,
- 50:22whether it's tackles for loss, you're not going to see a ton of
- 50:24that. They just got to hope that they
- 50:27can get you to 3rd down and get off the field.
- 50:32All right, let's talk about there is one more player.
- 50:35I always like to look at the linebacker room and tally.
- 50:40What information did you get on that, Mike linebacker Langston
- 50:43Patterson? We have Mr. Langston, the
- 50:46Patterson Langston. Patterson.
- 50:48That don't even sound like a football name, but he looks like
- 50:51a football player. That that it sounds.
- 50:54It sounds like a Vanderbilt linebacker.
- 50:56It does sound like a Vanderbilt linebacker.
- 50:58So he actually was a pretty, he was a kind of high three star
- 51:01player by the 88 ranking. Had some good offers coming out
- 51:04of high school. He's a Nashville kid, so you
- 51:08know, kind of hometown kid had offers from Arkansas, Duke,
- 51:13Georgia Tech, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Nebraska.
- 51:18So had some pretty good offers there.
- 51:20Also said he had a a Notre Dame offer.
- 51:22So he has a brother that played a four-star brother that played
- 51:27for Clemson and Kane, Kane Patterson, I think it's his
- 51:32name. So pretty steady Eddie there in
- 51:36the middle. He is a pre season third and
- 51:39fourth team all ACC player pre season.
- 51:44So we've got a little bit of stuff there in the middle form
- 51:48as far as Mr. Patterson. Brian, what you thinking about
- 51:51him? Yeah, I mean, looking at him, I
- 51:54mean leadership is his biggest attribute.
- 51:56He does a good job of, you know, getting the defensive line good
- 52:00at communicating. You can see him out there
- 52:02communicating well with the with the rest of the team,
- 52:04technically solid player guy. That's kind of where he needs to
- 52:08be most of the time. Not really a huge threat.
- 52:12The blitz game, they don't blitz him a ton.
- 52:14He's just a guy that's going to get in there, get you a good
- 52:17tackle, 3-4 yard game, run it back, do it again.
- 52:21Nothing that like super stands out at you.
- 52:23But he's also a guy that's not going to make a ton of mistakes.
- 52:26So he's going to end up racking up a pretty good amount of
- 52:27tackles in the middle there. All righty, so there we have it.
- 52:32A little Know the Enemy Vanderbilt edition the best we
- 52:36can with all of the last season's data.
- 52:39No tape from this season, trying to reach spring games and stuff.
- 52:42The first one's always tough, y'all Brian Brian always like
- 52:45bangs his head. Y'all don't know like he's like
- 52:48I I got to hopefully find these guys somewhere and obviously
- 52:51Sheldon, there's no fresh data from games and stuff out there
- 52:55and tally same way. It's it's like we're reading
- 52:57articles, we're trying to figure out stuff.
- 52:58So this is what we think guys that may you may hear the names
- 53:02of guys we feel like could be impact players for them that we
- 53:05feel like we need to stop or slow down.
- 53:08But the reality of it is we've got to have our own self and
- 53:11we've got a set of hokey keys here this week and tally and
- 53:14we'll let you kick it off because when you when you when
- 53:16you texted me what you wanted to say, I was like, he got he got
- 53:19to lead it go. Ahead, it's pretty it's pretty
- 53:21simple man. You show up to Nashville, TN,
- 53:24it's a fucking country ass hit town with a whole bunch of
- 53:28country music playing. So if you come in now, you come
- 53:31in there and you, you do what you got to do and you get ready
- 53:35to play. Block out all the noise.
- 53:38The talking's over. It's just time to go play.
- 53:42Everything is set up for us to go be successful.
- 53:45It's just time to go play. Block it out.
- 53:47Let's just go get it done. All righty Sheldon, what do you
- 53:52got Any, any, any motivational, philosophical, statistical?
- 53:57I mean, motivational, I feel like if you're if you need
- 53:59motivation for this game, man, you're in the wrong line of
- 54:02work. I think, I think everybody's
- 54:03going to come out motivated. But yeah, I just want to see, I
- 54:07want to see improvement from the areas that they kind of lacked
- 54:08last year, you know, particularly linebackers and
- 54:10safeties, you know, being able to to stop the run, prevent
- 54:13those big plays and just, you know, play good disciplined
- 54:16football in the back seven. I think if they do that, then
- 54:18they should have they should have a good time.
- 54:20I mean, look, Tech is a much better team.
- 54:21They have better time almost every position.
- 54:24It's a game you got to win. I'm not a big, you know,
- 54:26believer in you have to win by X amount of points, but it'd be
- 54:28nice to see them kind of take care of this one by a couple
- 54:31touchdowns at least. So just come up motivated, ready
- 54:33to play and and go into the stadium knowing that you're the
- 54:35better team. Bron Siegler.
- 54:39Do not sleepwalk into this game. Do not, do not come into this
- 54:44game and not decide to play to your potential for two to 3/4.
- 54:51We saw what what happened to Florida State, we saw what
- 54:54happened to SMU. Don't do that.
- 54:57Don't do that. But the biggest thing for me is
- 55:01especially if Diego Pavia is the quarterback and starting
- 55:05significantly for Vanderbilt in this game, don't let the
- 55:09quarterback's legs beat you, especially on 3rd down.
- 55:13We don't need a bad offense extending drives because we get
- 55:19a little undisciplined on 3rd down and long because that's
- 55:23going to be frustrating. That's not going to be fun to
- 55:25watch. Don't do that.
- 55:27If you take care of that business, I'm not really worried
- 55:29about anything else, to be honest with you.
- 55:32I'm not worried about anything else.
- 55:36All right, I guess I get to go last and it's similar to
- 55:38actually similar to what all three of y'all said.
- 55:41My biggest thing is do not play down to this team.
- 55:44Act like this team is the best team in the country and go out
- 55:46there and play your A game. And especially for me on the
- 55:50defensive line, in the offensive line, because basically what we
- 55:54see from what Shelton's given us, this is not that very good
- 55:57of an offensive line. Go take their damn lunch money.
- 56:02So take their lunch money, offensive line.
- 56:04Same way I'm looking at this. They lost their leading SAT guy
- 56:07last year to USC. Go take their lunch money.
- 56:12Make them want to go to the sidelines.
- 56:14Want to look there and say, listen, just let them run this
- 56:16game in, but just run this ball in.
- 56:18Let this be the game. I'm tired of getting hit so.
- 56:23Don't lay down, let me ask you a question.
- 56:26I was thinking about this too, because we've interviewed
- 56:28probably a couple of times and and we can only go by kind of
- 56:30what he says. And he came in as a defensive
- 56:33coach and he took the reins kind of on defense.
- 56:37He had a defensive coordinator first year, but he kind of took
- 56:40the reins on handling the defense.
- 56:43And he said himself it was a lot of work.
- 56:46You know, it was times when he might or should have been in
- 56:48another room that he was focused on that defense and maybe
- 56:52offense may have, I don't want to say went lacking because I
- 56:55don't want to, you know, put the words in his mouth.
- 56:56But you know, what we talked to and what he said.
- 56:59How much do you think that's going to affect them, that their
- 57:02coach is effectively head coach and DC all at the same time?
- 57:08And then you've got all of this stuff going on on your defense
- 57:12and you're going into a a game, you're going into a season
- 57:17against a formidable opponent. You know, like, how do you think
- 57:19that's going to affect them? I think for them, I think that's
- 57:22why he brought in kill because he feels like he needs someone
- 57:25to control that side of the ball.
- 57:26But I think what that could cause is issues within the
- 57:29locker room because you and Brian both played and if
- 57:32everybody ain't on the same page as coaching, getting everybody
- 57:35time, get everybody on the same page, that can screw shit up,
- 57:38they can screw shit up quick. I think for him, I think he did
- 57:42the move because he's in his fourth season.
- 57:45They've not had any good season since he's been there.
- 57:47This is like this is the last ditch effort.
- 57:50He knows that if he can't manage probably four wins this year,
- 57:54he's probably got one more lame duck season then he'll fire so
- 57:59last and to be honest, so maybe he screwed up from the
- 58:04beginning. Maybe he should have taken the
- 58:05range and put his imprint on that defense the first couple
- 58:08seasons. Not when he gets to the point
- 58:11where you are one of the worst defenses in the country.
- 58:14You're now losing good players to bigger program.
- 58:17So that's my opinion on it. I don't Sheldon Brown if y'all
- 58:20got any takes on that. Yeah, I'm right there with you.
- 58:24I think it's the Jerry kill effect.
- 58:25I think that's why you brought him in.
- 58:27You brought in a coordinator that you're comfortable with and
- 58:30now you got a guy essentially overseeing that, that
- 58:33coordinator that was the head coach for that coordinator at
- 58:36the previous stop. So from a, you know, tree
- 58:40perspective that, you know, it's still kind of flowing the same.
- 58:44I think the bigger thing is that now you essentially in some ways
- 58:49have two head coaches. You got a defensive focus head
- 58:52coach and then you got a de facto offensive focus head
- 58:55coach. I don't know if that's a good
- 58:58thing from a messaging standpoint because you don't
- 59:02have one unified message from the top down.
- 59:05You kind of are talking about this is the offensive lingo,
- 59:08this is the defensive lingo. And I don't know how they have
- 59:11it structured, but I could see it going sideways like that if
- 59:15it's not structured in a in a very succinct way.
- 59:18So that that that's my concern for them with that set up.
- 59:22But I think it's also why Lee was OK with making that step is
- 59:26because he had somebody like Kill to kind of run the
- 59:30offensive side of the ship. You got anything that?
- 59:35No man, we we know that Jared kills.
- 59:37Never afraid to pull a punch if you know.
- 59:39Anything. Shelton Moss predicts Kill Lee
- 59:44are in fight by Week 3. Let's go ahead and put that out
- 59:47there. If he, if Jared Kill has an
- 59:48issue, we think he's going to let you know about it, that's
- 59:50for sure. Hey, at least kill him back.
- 59:52You've been known to coexist. Big day you go.
- 59:55Cannot be said. The same thing cannot be said
- 59:57for Brad or Nelson. So 100.
- 59:59Percent. 100%. All right.
- 1:00:01Well, boys. We always get to a time in this
- 1:00:03program where we have to make our predictions for the game and
- 1:00:07we do it. We don't dance around it.
- 1:00:09We last year there were games we sat in here and we said we're
- 1:00:13going to lose this game there. Games we said we were going to
- 1:00:16win. Sometimes we were right,
- 1:00:17sometimes we were wrong, but always got to lay it out there
- 1:00:21the way we're feeling about this game.
- 1:00:22And I will let Jonathan Talley lead the way on this.
- 1:00:26Mr. Talley, what's your prediction open wise?
- 1:00:31Hokies by 17 man, I say score is going to be somewhere around
- 1:00:363434 to to 1734. Fourteen kind of what I'm
- 1:00:43thinking, yeah. So 17 like I said, 3414 for for
- 1:00:47the Hokies. Hey by the way guys, we are not
- 1:00:50picking this game against the spread anymore this year.
- 1:00:52Everyone got pissed off at us last year because they got
- 1:00:54confused whether we were taking money line or spread.
- 1:00:56So they got. Pissed when it.
- 1:00:58Comes to Hokies, we ain't picking spreads.
- 1:01:00This is all who's winning and by how much?
- 1:01:04Right, there we go. All righty.
- 1:01:06So Shelton, what about you? As you're going to be, you said
- 1:01:09Raleigh, right? Yep, going to be watching from
- 1:01:11Raleigh. I will take the Hokies 34 to 20.
- 1:01:14I think it's made a pretty average pedestrian game.
- 1:01:16I think Texan get off to a hot start.
- 1:01:18Vanderbilt will come back a little bit, maybe get close to
- 1:01:20evening it up. But in the end, the the superior
- 1:01:23talent and depth of the Tech roster will carry them to
- 1:01:26victory by two touchdowns, and they will cover.
- 1:01:29Bron. Give me Virginia Tech 3717.
- 1:01:35I like a good twenty point victory here.
- 1:01:38I don't think that offense is going to be able to do a whole
- 1:01:42lot against our defense. I I think that we'll be able to
- 1:01:46score pretty regularly. You know, we're not going to
- 1:01:50necessarily run it up like we did against UVA, but I think
- 1:01:52we're going to be able to score consistently against them. 3717
- 1:01:56sounds good to me. All righty, and I'm not far from
- 1:01:59either any of y'all 3 on this. I am.
- 1:02:03I do have the closest score, but I told tally earlier today
- 1:02:06pretty much I was at 17, I'm at 3423 final.
- 1:02:10I think they get some garbage one minute left touchdown with
- 1:02:15nobody that's on that 2D chart playing, just getting some guys
- 1:02:18some reps and they give up a late touchdown and it looks a
- 1:02:20little bit closer than it actually is.
- 1:02:23But you know what, Brian, you said something.
- 1:02:25If we get the opportunity, I hope we do run it up.
- 1:02:29You know, it's like make a statement, especially if you can
- 1:02:33get like Colin and you can get pop out there and then score a
- 1:02:35couple touchdowns, run it up. Because your nuts against SEC is
- 1:02:40always fun no matter who it is. Always fun.
- 1:02:44Please, let's do. That because as it stands right
- 1:02:46now, Brian has a score in the most at 37.
- 1:02:50Everybody got it in the 30s, but Brian's saying 37 and that's the
- 1:02:53highest than any of us think. We'll go on.
- 1:02:57We we are being. Very please prove what's wrong.
- 1:03:00Prove us wrong, guys. Yeah, put 60 up.
- 1:03:04Please put 60. Please, all righty.
- 1:03:07So they're the predictions we're all going with the hokey wins
- 1:03:10all of us by double digits from with the biggest me with the
- 1:03:12smallest margin of victory and tally and Sheldon right in
- 1:03:17there. So there goes that.
- 1:03:20Now we get to turn to other games for this weekend and what
- 1:03:24we have. Brian got to play around Y'all.
- 1:03:27He got to play around. We are going big screen.
- 1:03:31Look at that y'all look at that. Look at that graphic.
- 1:03:35If you're watching on the podcast, go to YouTube, check
- 1:03:37out the beautiful graphic that Brian has picked big screeners
- 1:03:42week one. It is presented by counts family
- 1:03:45pharmacy and again, I'll just say this, if you don't know
- 1:03:48counts family pharmacy will be a gobbler fest four to seven on
- 1:03:50the drill field. Go send somebody there that can
- 1:03:53win that PS Five and then give it to me because I.
- 1:03:57Ain't got? Because I told you about it.
- 1:04:00Curtis is now spitting this into him getting APS. 5.
- 1:04:04That's why you plugged it a third time guys, I'm.
- 1:04:07Going to plug it a fourth time. Watch.
- 1:04:08All right, so we got a bunch of getting.
- 1:04:11First of all, good weekend in college football starting
- 1:04:14Thursday night through Monday, Good games all over the place.
- 1:04:19But we're going to let Mr. Siegler kick it off.
- 1:04:21Brian, where are we going for this game?
- 1:04:26Yeah, we've got Clemson and Georgia.
- 1:04:29That's where we're going first. Yes, Hot Atlanta, baby, Hot
- 1:04:33Atlanta. Dome.
- 1:04:34And the line? The line is 13 1/2 in favor of
- 1:04:40Georgia. And you know what?
- 1:04:43I'm riding with Georgia. I think Clemson is fucking down.
- 1:04:46I think Clemson is burnout. I think Clemson is done.
- 1:04:50And I think Georgia is going to go ahead and start the kindling
- 1:04:53that's going to be the fire that burns their ass the rest of the
- 1:04:56season. All righty, I'm opposite of you
- 1:04:59on that. I first of all, I'm not that
- 1:05:01impressed. So everybody loves Carson Beck
- 1:05:05and just what I've seen him it just it doesn't pop to me. 13
- 1:05:081/2 is a monster number. The one thing is Clemson that
- 1:05:11has not changed over these past few years is that damn defense
- 1:05:14is good. So if y'all remember a few years
- 1:05:17ago there was this game where there wasn't an offensive
- 1:05:20touchdown scored just one defense.
- 1:05:22I'm going to say Clemson covers. I don't know who's going to win
- 1:05:25it. I'm going to be I'm going to be
- 1:05:26watching the Hokies game. So I'm really not going to be
- 1:05:29paying attention. I'll, I'll figure out after
- 1:05:31that. Callie, what about you?
- 1:05:33Well, when you don't watch that game and you figure out after it
- 1:05:37what happened, George is going to be done whoop Clemson's ass.
- 1:05:43Clemson's got too many chats and Eric's.
- 1:05:48They got to go get some Kwan's and Deshawn's.
- 1:05:52That's all I say. Georgia covers Sheldon, what
- 1:05:55about you? Well, I'm a little bit higher on
- 1:05:58Clemson than Brian is. I know they're not what they
- 1:06:00used to be, but I think that I still like their coaching staff.
- 1:06:0313.5 is a pretty big spread. I think Clemson will lose this
- 1:06:06game, but they will cover. All right.
- 1:06:09And our newest colleague, Miranda says.
- 1:06:13George. George we are a split family on
- 1:06:16this game so therefore we will not be putting our.
- 1:06:19Money. That's a nice little pattern
- 1:06:21there too. You know we.
- 1:06:21When did Jason pick this? He did not.
- 1:06:24Do you want him to pick every week?
- 1:06:26I guarantee you he will and lay money on.
- 1:06:28I'm just wondering because I mean, we're at a kind of odd
- 1:06:31number right there, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:06:33You know, I think if Jason gets in that we might really be
- 1:06:35split, you know what I mean? That's just my opinion.
- 1:06:38I was wondering, did he pick? I'd like I'll call him.
- 1:06:40I'll need to know what he thinks about this.
- 1:06:42All right, listen, we will get in touch with him tomorrow and
- 1:06:45see if he wants to start giving picks for all the games.
- 1:06:48Knowing him, of course, knowing him, you know he does more more
- 1:06:53action on Saturdays. All righty.
- 1:06:55Well, I got the next one. Here, Jason just texted me and
- 1:06:58said he's taking Georgia. He's taking there we go, Jason
- 1:07:03taking Georgia with the 13 1/2. Tell him he's got, we got a few
- 1:07:07more to go here. So he's got to stay on the line
- 1:07:09with us. All right, I have got the next
- 1:07:12one up here and I'm going to Sunday night going out to Vegas,
- 1:07:17USC versus LSULSU, the four and a half point favorite kind of
- 1:07:22far away from home with the LSU fans are crazy.
- 1:07:25I'm sure that place is going to be dealt with purple and all
- 1:07:28that. And Brian, I want to see what
- 1:07:32you got with this one first. That line isn't big enough.
- 1:07:35Give me LSU all the way. Give you LSU all the way.
- 1:07:39Yeah, that at least a touchdown, at least a.
- 1:07:41Touchdown All righty. Let me think about it here.
- 1:07:46Let me think about it here. You know what I'm I'm with you,
- 1:07:50I'm with you. I think it's just a little bit
- 1:07:52too big. LSU later 4 1/2 take the over.
- 1:07:56The over is only 64 and y'all know Lincoln Riley can score
- 1:08:00points, but he don't play defense ever.
- 1:08:02So 4834, take the over. LSU wins.
- 1:08:08Ali, what about you? I don't know much about either
- 1:08:11one of them teams, I'm going to be honest with you.
- 1:08:13But I do know I got a good friend's son that plays on USC.
- 1:08:17He transferred from Georgia State and he plays defensive end
- 1:08:22linebacker that his name is Jamil Muhammad.
- 1:08:24Everybody give him a look. I'm going with Southern Cal just
- 1:08:29for that reason. I'm going to support my boy and
- 1:08:31I'm going to say Southern Cal. Al covers Sheldon, where are you
- 1:08:37laying on this one? Sunday after a weekend in
- 1:08:39Raleigh. That's a good football name, by
- 1:08:41the way. Jamil Mohammed.
- 1:08:44I like like Tally. I don't know what time about
- 1:08:46this teams. I just kind of felt like Lincoln
- 1:08:50Riley is going to come with a little bit of a chip on his
- 1:08:52shoulder trying to prove some people wrong.
- 1:08:53So I think, I think USC is going to take it.
- 1:08:57All right, USC says that, Miranda says.
- 1:09:00Miranda is riding with me and you, Curtis.
- 1:09:02And Jason texted me he's taking LSU with the four and a half
- 1:09:06tally. Do you need to make a change?
- 1:09:08No, we got to talk to Miranda about her picks.
- 1:09:12She's coming. She's coming in wrong right now.
- 1:09:14She coming in wrong on this. One Miranda, if you watch it.
- 1:09:18No, because Tally follows Sheldon, so I'm following
- 1:09:23Sheldon. We good, but I got analytics
- 1:09:26backing me up, man. Hey, we can't lose.
- 1:09:29So Miranda, you need to get on the right board.
- 1:09:31You need to get on the right ship right now.
- 1:09:33Tally's sitting here saying if it feels good and then Shelton
- 1:09:36says the statistics. Feel.
- 1:09:38Come on now. He feels good.
- 1:09:40There we go, all. Right.
- 1:09:41Well, Tally, we know you've got a very special pick, not your
- 1:09:45typical big Screener, and I'm going to go ahead.
- 1:09:47Take the floor, my friend. Yeah, so my alma mater,
- 1:09:50Jacksonville State, will be playing Coastal Carolina.
- 1:09:54As y'all know, or you should know, my daughter is a freshman
- 1:09:57at JSU. We went and dropped off last
- 1:09:59week. So this will be her first game
- 1:10:04as a She's been to a couple of Virginia Tech games, but this
- 1:10:06will be her first college game as a college student.
- 1:10:11So that is a Thursday night game.
- 1:10:13I've told her she better do everything she can skip class to
- 1:10:17get there to go and be a part of that because that's going to be
- 1:10:20an awesome, awesome atmosphere. And also, Jacksonville State
- 1:10:27plays Louisville the next week. So I'll be paying attention to
- 1:10:30kind of see what they have so I can so I can be rooting against
- 1:10:34Louisville when they play them. Nice.
- 1:10:36All right, Well, let's go across the board.
- 1:10:37We'll get to you in just a second.
- 1:10:38Tally Brian, who you got? With the love of the game, give
- 1:10:43me Jacksonville State baby. Let's go right with my man
- 1:10:46Sally. I I'm with you because I want to
- 1:10:49see your baby girl see a dub on her first collegiate game, and
- 1:10:53I'm with Jacksonville State. And we are, as we, I'm going to
- 1:10:57put it up there, we already know.
- 1:10:58As we used to say when I went there in 2004, no, that's a long
- 1:11:03time ago. You can't beat our cocks.
- 1:11:06Go game, cocks. I feel, I feel about to know
- 1:11:13that I'm going against the green, but I might have.
- 1:11:16I might have to take the L here, but I'm going coastal.
- 1:11:19That's OK, all right. He's going coastal.
- 1:11:22You got to switch it up to Alex because Miranda went coastal as
- 1:11:25well. She followed.
- 1:11:28She followed Sheldon. That's OK.
- 1:11:29I ain't going to be mad. I don't know.
- 1:11:32All righty, all righty. Next one.
- 1:11:35We did let our esteemed new rider choose a game.
- 1:11:38Why wouldn't we? And she chose the Saturday night
- 1:11:4110. No, this is Sheldon next.
- 1:11:42My bad. Sheldon, our esteemed colleague,
- 1:11:47West Virginia, Penn State, what you got on this one man?
- 1:11:51Why you choosing? I'm going first.
- 1:11:55Yeah, yeah. Yeah, no, I just, I thought it
- 1:11:57was I think it's a really good game.
- 1:11:58I know that the that crowd is going to be electric, you know,
- 1:12:02kind of a big time non conference matchup and I will
- 1:12:06take WVU to cover plus eights. I think the crowds going to get
- 1:12:11on low lift. I don't think they're going to
- 1:12:12win, but I do think they will cover.
- 1:12:15All right, they're not going, but they're going to cover.
- 1:12:16Brian, what do you have on this one?
- 1:12:19Yeah, You know what? Give me the Nittany lines.
- 1:12:24I think it's going to be a big home game.
- 1:12:26I think that that that home atmosphere is going to carry it.
- 1:12:29Give me Penn State. You know this is in Morgantown,
- 1:12:32right? I did not.
- 1:12:34Damn. Uh oh.
- 1:12:34Yeah, it's in Morgantown, buddy. It's in Morgantown, Brian.
- 1:12:38You know what I'm going to ride. I'm going to continue to ride
- 1:12:40with Penn State, continues. We'll continue riding with Penn
- 1:12:42State. I, I think they're going to,
- 1:12:44they're going to pull it out even though it's in Morgantown,
- 1:12:47like Morgantown. Yeah, this is like one of those,
- 1:12:51I don't know, like, thank you, Penn State for Pry.
- 1:12:54I got a couple people at work that are Penn State alums.
- 1:12:57Always tell them thank you for Brent Pry.
- 1:12:59You don't know how much you have made us a happier society down
- 1:13:02here. But this game being in
- 1:13:06Morgantown, like Sheldon said, I think it's going to give a
- 1:13:08boost. I think it's going to be a war.
- 1:13:10Can I, can I do something? Can I go real off for saying I'm
- 1:13:13choosing West Virginia? I hate the schedule for this
- 1:13:17opening weekend. Clemson, Georgia's at 12, we're
- 1:13:19at 12. This games at 12.
- 1:13:21There's like three really good freaking games at noon and
- 1:13:27there's only like one at 3:30 and there's only one at 7:30 and
- 1:13:29there's only one on Sunday. Can they get that shit right?
- 1:13:34Like that irritates me as a fan. That irritates me as a fan.
- 1:13:39I understand. Spread it out.
- 1:13:40Spread it alone. Like, spread it out.
- 1:13:41Like, I want to sit here from noon to midnight, eat a lot of
- 1:13:46bad food, drink a few beers and have fun.
- 1:13:49Instead, it's like, oh, it's going to be at noon.
- 1:13:52Hey, I will be sitting in a bar after our game anyway and
- 1:13:55watching everything that's out there, so whatever's on, I'll
- 1:13:58watch it. We either.
- 1:14:00Going to be drinking to have fun or we we either going to be
- 1:14:03drinking to have fun or we going to be drinking our sorrows away.
- 1:14:06So I'd much rather be drinking to have fun.
- 1:14:09I'm going to take Penn State just because fuck, fuck West
- 1:14:15Virginia and and them heels have eyes looking motherfuckers from
- 1:14:20over there. That's all I got to say.
- 1:14:24And Shell's already told us he's got WVU here, and Miranda's
- 1:14:30riding WVU as well. So West.
- 1:14:32Virginia. Sheldon and Miranda.
- 1:14:36It's just, it's just like that. It's that stinky line.
- 1:14:39Like it's such a stinky line. And if.
- 1:14:42I had looked at the schedule wrong.
- 1:14:43I might would have went with the WVU, but I'm staying on business
- 1:14:47what I put out there. All right, let's go now to
- 1:14:51Miranda's. Yeah, I, and I forgot to mention
- 1:14:54Robbie, put it in the chat for us.
- 1:14:57What's that? Sorry, did I cut out?
- 1:15:06I'm good. You cut out, but you get, I
- 1:15:08said, hey shit, you cut out again.
- 1:15:13Rich Rod is the coach at Jacksonville State.
- 1:15:15That's all. Oh, yeah, yeah, there you go.
- 1:15:18Yes, he is the coach at Jacksonville State.
- 1:15:21All right, so now let's go to the only big prime time matchup,
- 1:15:27Notre Dame, Texas A&M in College Station, TX A and M3 Point
- 1:15:34favorites. I think it's a straight up
- 1:15:35three, which is very awkward to be a straight up three.
- 1:15:39This is Miranda's pick, by the way.
- 1:15:41Yeah, yeah. Good game.
- 1:15:42Good, good. Solid choice, Ron.
- 1:15:47You know what, I've given A&M a lot of shit in in recent years.
- 1:15:54Everybody knows that. It's well documented.
- 1:15:58I don't think this is going to be necessarily significantly
- 1:16:00different, but I do think they have the horses to cover this
- 1:16:07measly three line. So give me the Aggies.
- 1:16:10Here, All right, I am completely against you on this.
- 1:16:15I actually think Notre Dame is going to win this game outright,
- 1:16:18so I'm going to take the points just because in this case, Elko
- 1:16:25is a good coach that he's going to a situation where you feel
- 1:16:28like it's more horses. The question is, as we've seen
- 1:16:31throughout so many times, some guys can't just go in as a head
- 1:16:35coach and take the talent and win.
- 1:16:37They can find the young, they can take the the lesser guys and
- 1:16:39build them up like he did at Duke.
- 1:16:42I got to wait to see what he's going to have at A&M.
- 1:16:44They did lose some stuff in the portal and I don't know, I'm
- 1:16:48just, I, I, I can't believe in Texas A&M until they actually do
- 1:16:52it in front of me. Fair enough, Tally what you got.
- 1:16:58I'm going to say Notre Dame. I'm just going to give it to the
- 1:17:01Irish on here. No real reason.
- 1:17:06I just I like, I like the Irish in this game and kind of what
- 1:17:11Curtis said. You know, I do want to see Texas
- 1:17:13A&M show me something before I pick them.
- 1:17:17Shelton. I found a good stat nugget.
- 1:17:21So last 42 years, Notre Dame has never had a season opener where
- 1:17:26they have not started a senior on the offensive line.
- 1:17:29That's Shrek will end this year. So they don't have any seniors
- 1:17:32starting for them pretty young online.
- 1:17:34They're going into a Lion Skin and Kyle Field.
- 1:17:36I think the Aggies are going to be motivated.
- 1:17:38They've they've heard people talk some crap.
- 1:17:40You got a really talented roster.
- 1:17:41I think they're going to take this one in the season opener.
- 1:17:45And Miranda rode with me and Shelton on this one, taking the
- 1:17:49Aggies. All righty all.
- 1:17:51Right. I wish Shelton would give me the
- 1:17:53that before he makes. All right, before before we get
- 1:17:58to the last one, give. Me the stuff too, Sheldon.
- 1:18:00Come on man. Give him to give him the gritty.
- 1:18:03Just a couple before we get to our last pick here, our buddy
- 1:18:07Robbie saying tech by 21 tally. We take that, wouldn't we?
- 1:18:15You know what I love? I love running it.
- 1:18:17Yes, Sir. Hi, Chris.
- 1:18:18Hi, Chris. Hi, Chris.
- 1:18:20We'll definitely take that too. All righty, so we got one more
- 1:18:24game to pick in this year as part of our Big Screeners
- 1:18:29special. Our music man Jason Long is
- 1:18:33going to be giving us a little something something every week.
- 1:18:36This week, he's going to Boulder.
- 1:18:59Welcome to the 1st edition of Guitar Licks and Gridiron Picks.
- 1:19:02I'm Jason Long. You've been hearing my music on
- 1:19:04the Boundary Corner podcast for several years now.
- 1:19:07Well, this season the boys asked me to come on and talk about
- 1:19:09another one of my great passions, sports gambling.
- 1:19:12So each week I'm going to be matching up tunes and bets.
- 1:19:15Sort of like a. Degenerate hippie sommelier and
- 1:19:25week 1. We're headed to Boulder.
- 1:19:27And the car ride ride Mountain High, seeing rain fire in the
- 1:19:42sky and everybody 's high Colorado, North Dakota State is
- 1:20:07visiting Colorado on Thursday night.
- 1:20:10Now look at this point of the season.
- 1:20:12I don't know who's making the playoffs, what the bold matchup
- 1:20:14is going to be, but I figured this should be an interesting
- 1:20:17game. The Buffaloes started strong
- 1:20:19last year, but they finished just four and eight.
- 1:20:21That has not stopped Coach Prime and his team from talking a
- 1:20:24whole lot of trash this summer. Time to see if they can bag it
- 1:20:27up. Now it's year two.
- 1:20:29Their depth should be better. And I keep hearing that QB
- 1:20:32Shidor is a Heisman finalist and a future top five NFL draft
- 1:20:36pick. And hey, I'm not hating.
- 1:20:37I want to see it happen. So no offense to North Dakota
- 1:20:40State. The Colorado should take care
- 1:20:42of. Business here at home, in prime
- 1:20:44time no less. So with my first pick of the
- 1:20:482024 season, I'm taking Colorado -9 1/2 points.
- 1:21:13So go get them Buffaloes. And of course, let's go Hokies.
- 1:21:17See you next week for another edition of Guitar Licks and
- 1:21:19Gridiron Picks. All righty, so there is Jason.
- 1:21:32Jason taking Colorado, laying the 9 1/2 points with a little
- 1:21:37Rocky Mountain High. And we're going to be doing that
- 1:21:40every week. Jason's going to be throwing us
- 1:21:42games. He's going to be throwing us a
- 1:21:43little music in. Here goes the long way back with
- 1:21:48Jason. So glad to bring him on for one
- 1:21:50little segment. So he's picked it, played a
- 1:21:53little tune for us. Brian, who are you taking in
- 1:21:56this last big screen or Thursday night?
- 1:22:00You know what, I'm I'm going to ride with the Buffaloes here.
- 1:22:02I just think even with some of the offseason shenanigans and
- 1:22:08kind of everything, all the hype, all the talk, all the
- 1:22:10trash talk, all all the silliness that we've seen, I
- 1:22:14still think in this case the Buffaloes just have too much
- 1:22:18talent at at a lot of key positions.
- 1:22:21I think they're going to take the win.
- 1:22:23Yeah, I'm with you. I definitely think they're going
- 1:22:25to take the win. And I definitely think, just
- 1:22:29hold on real quick here. There you go.
- 1:22:30Appreciate it Chris, I'm going Colorado taking the points 9
- 1:22:371/2, but I think it is going to be a dogfight just because of
- 1:22:40the clash of styles. As y'all know, North Dakota
- 1:22:42State loves to absolutely # the rock.
- 1:22:46We know Colorado was subjective to giving up some runs last
- 1:22:50year. So Colorado later 9 1/2, they
- 1:22:55probably close them out mid fourth quarter went somewhere
- 1:22:58between 16 and 17 points. Before I get to my.
- 1:23:04Before I get to my pic, I want to know what was on that table
- 1:23:07behind you, Jason, look like a whole bunch of lotion, different
- 1:23:12types of lotion and why people don't be wearing lotion like
- 1:23:15that. I know what you're using that if
- 1:23:17that's lotion for look like Vaseline too.
- 1:23:20But anyway, I'm going to say Colorado.
- 1:23:22Jason, you need to be texting us and let us know what's on that
- 1:23:25tape. Sheldon, what you got?
- 1:23:32So first of all, I know I saw Robbie had a question to chat.
- 1:23:36Is there really a difference between a Buffalo and a bison?
- 1:23:40There is. It's actually somewhat of a
- 1:23:42misnomer. Only bison.
- 1:23:44Bison are in America. Buffalo are not in America,
- 1:23:48they're in Asia. So with all due respect to
- 1:23:51Colorado, your name does not make sense.
- 1:23:56I never knew that. It's always a bison.
- 1:23:58It is not a Buffalo. So with that being said, I am
- 1:24:02taking, I'm taking Dion and the bus.
- 1:24:04I know this is a trendy pick for NDSU, but they do not have the
- 1:24:07speed to keep up with Colorado. They're going to wear them down
- 1:24:09in the second-half and they will win this game.
- 1:24:11And he will avoid embarrassment for now.
- 1:24:16And finally, Miranda's on this pick.
- 1:24:20When we're riding the whole way back, by the way, Tally Jason
- 1:24:24said. It is a Lego set.
- 1:24:26Oh OK, OK I'm old man, my eyes is bad.
- 1:24:30I was just trying to make sure I was trying to see.
- 1:24:35You. You would have been real
- 1:24:36suspicious if you tried to say it was lotion, but not for the
- 1:24:39reason you think. So at least.
- 1:24:42At least he went with something else.
- 1:24:43It's a Lego set, everybody. I'll wait.
- 1:24:46You're the air. By the way, the gambler man
- 1:24:48Jason Long also says Jacksonville State, take
- 1:24:51Jacksonville State in that game. So he didn't get us all of them,
- 1:24:55but yeah, so. All right, we got we got a
- 1:24:57rundown here. Let's look at it.
- 1:24:59Let's look at this. This is where we landed.
- 1:25:03All right. OK, Are we wrong?
- 1:25:04Did we get it right? Let us know.
- 1:25:06We're going to get them wrong. Don't worry.
- 1:25:10Oh yeah, definitely. I'm definitely getting them
- 1:25:12wrong. I think I had the worst.
- 1:25:14I know I had the worst picks last year.
- 1:25:16It was horrible. So I'm going to do much better
- 1:25:19this year. I'm starting off good.
- 1:25:22Y'all better follow me because we're going to make some money
- 1:25:24this year I'm telling you. Make some money.
- 1:25:28Somebody got to keep a record of this.
- 1:25:31Might want to do that for us. Curtis Curtis, you just gave
- 1:25:33yourself another job, man. Great job man.
- 1:25:38Somebody needs to do this. Somebody needs to.
- 1:25:40Keep on this shit. Let's go.
- 1:25:42Let's go. Anything breaking in the last
- 1:25:45hour and 26 minutes, boys? You know what?
- 1:25:50I don't see anything breaking. I ain't got nothing breaking,
- 1:25:54but I do got a question I got to ask.
- 1:25:57I always ask a lot of dumb ass stuff, right?
- 1:25:59So I got to ask some dumb stuff. This is going to be starting
- 1:26:02with Shelton Sheldon, Virginia Tech Hokies first game of the
- 1:26:08season. How do we score first this year?
- 1:26:11What's the first score that we had?
- 1:26:15Let's see, because I'm a big fan of his.
- 1:26:17I'm going to go Jalen Lane. It's going to be let's go, it's
- 1:26:23going to be a pass behind the line of scrimmage.
- 1:26:25We're going to get a good block in the perimeter and he's going
- 1:26:27to take it to the house for a 17 yard score.
- 1:26:29Oh, Dang, that was pretty. If this comes true, we going to
- 1:26:35have to. We're going to have to do
- 1:26:37something about Sheldon. I know something's up.
- 1:26:40Brian, what you got? Give me a Benji Gosnell slugo.
- 1:26:45OK all. Right.
- 1:26:47I'm going to go next and then Curtis, I'm going to let you
- 1:26:49finish it up. I got to go.
- 1:26:52I got to go with my quarterback, quarterback keeper.
- 1:26:55I don't have a certain amount of touchdown yards.
- 1:27:01I'm just saying Karen Drones quarterback keeper touchdown
- 1:27:07first, first score of the season.
- 1:27:09First score of the season. All righty.
- 1:27:12Karen Drones is involved with mine, but he's not scoring a
- 1:27:15touchdown. He is throwing about a 45 yard
- 1:27:20bomb to Daquan Feldon as we pick on those inexperienced lap bad
- 1:27:24cornerbacks and he going to pull it out and what are you going to
- 1:27:27do? Like he was going down the pit
- 1:27:29last year. He going to let every single
- 1:27:32player on Vanderbilt's know what it's all about.
- 1:27:37All the Robbie's would be cool too.
- 1:27:40Put that back up there real quick.
- 1:27:41Robbie's would be cool too. Just house the first one.
- 1:27:44You want to talk? About get it out of the way,
- 1:27:45let's. Get it out of the way.
- 1:27:47Let's. Get it out of the way.
- 1:27:49All right. I like that tally.
- 1:27:50You know what? That might become a statement at
- 1:27:52the end here how he scoring the first touchdown this week.
- 1:27:56Keep it going. Some weeks I'm so nervous, man,
- 1:27:58I I wouldn't even know what to do.
- 1:28:02I mean, you're nervous. This week though, the the nerves
- 1:28:04are off with week one, Especially when it's like, you
- 1:28:07know, games that it's not a conference game, it's it's not,
- 1:28:10it's none of that stuff that has like super long term impacts on
- 1:28:14you. You know, it's one of those
- 1:28:16games you want to win, you should win.
- 1:28:19You want to get over. Just aren't there because of the
- 1:28:20stakes that aren't. There's no real stakes attached
- 1:28:23to it, so. Right.
- 1:28:25But we want to get off on the right foot.
- 1:28:27Oh yeah, definitely. Want to get out, You want to get
- 1:28:29feeling good, you want to get to feeling good.
- 1:28:31I know y'all can be like this. Y'all want to walk around
- 1:28:36Nashville all Saturday night with the hokey gear on with your
- 1:28:38chest out? Shelton wants to walk around
- 1:28:40Raleigh, downtown, wherever you're doing with the hokey gear
- 1:28:43on all Saturday night. And same here.
- 1:28:44That's what the way we want to feel and I think it's going to
- 1:28:47happen this week, boys. And with that, let's wrap up
