- 0:00You have your Bibles tonight. Second Samuel chapter 13, is
- 0:05where we're meeting tonight. And as you're there, I would
- 0:08like to begin by saying the Apostle Paul Asher's us and
- 0:12warns us by the holy spirit in Galatians 6:7.
- 0:16Do not be deceived. God is Not mocked.
- 0:19Whatever a man so's that will. He also what?
- 0:24Reap that, whatever he sews will he also reap?
- 0:30If you've been with us, you know, that in second Samuel
- 0:32chapter 11 David has sold much into unfortunate.
- 0:40Things. He sewed much into his lust into
- 0:43deception. And to betrayal to murder and we
- 0:52are now about to see him reaping from the same tragedies through
- 0:56a series of catastrophes, that will essentially cover the rest
- 1:00of our study in the book of second.
- 1:02Samuel, We've already seen that David.
- 1:08Has experienced some sorrow with the death of the child that he
- 1:11had with Bathsheba. And that is just the beginning
- 1:14of many griefs. And these tragedies these
- 1:18atrocities that will follow David for the rest of his life
- 1:21will be close to home. In fact, they will emerge from
- 1:25his own home. And there is this strange notion
- 1:31that people have. About how God's forgiveness
- 1:36works because one of the overarching truths that will be
- 1:39constantly before us for the following chapters until the
- 1:43last period. Mark of This Book, Is that
- 1:48forgiving sin still has consequences.
- 1:54The Lord is ready to Pardon. He is quick to receive us over
- 2:00and over again, but his willingness for us to be
- 2:04reconciled back to him. There's not always promised
- 2:10every outcome being canceled equally.
- 2:13We can thank God that when we do turn from our evil, he promises
- 2:19us. Restored Fellowship.
- 2:22And he promises us as security of his favor to shine over us.
- 2:28but depending on the nature of the sin that we commit, it is
- 2:33very true that we cannot predict the outcomes that can sometimes
- 2:39even be life lasting they can burn and remain to some degree
- 2:48on us and around us. And before us and that truth
- 2:52alone should discourage. The tented Saint, who finds
- 2:56themselves very near to the edge of compromise because they sued
- 3:00themselves with the idea that God is very, very quick to
- 3:04forgive why? Because even Forgiving sin.
- 3:10Can have consequences. and that is precisely what we are going
- 3:15to see here in this chapter because starting here in this
- 3:21Verse verse 1 of chapter 13. You and I are going to see
- 3:26David's dishonorable example, reproduced in his adult
- 3:31children. Now, we don't know how much of
- 3:36David's failure was made known to his family, things catch on
- 3:40quick, things can spread quick, but one thing is for certain
- 3:45according to First Kings chapter one, David was not the most
- 3:48exemplary father. He was very slow to discipline
- 3:51his children. And even just in Practical
- 3:55living, he didn't, he didn't really showcase the most,
- 3:59honorable way of living and making decisions, especially in
- 4:02the area of relationships. And so we're going to see some
- 4:07some tragedies. It's not it's not going to be
- 4:10the brightest Bible study moving forward from chapter 13 onward.
- 4:16And the first person that's going to replay some of the
- 4:20shameful things that David has done though in different forms
- 4:24is going to be eminent David's eldest son.
- 4:28According to 1st Chronicles chapter 3, verse 1.
- 4:32And what a man is going to do, here is a grievous violation of
- 4:37many things. And I want to give you a heads
- 4:40up, this is not going to be the most comfortable Bible study to
- 4:44engage with It's not going to be the most comforting things
- 4:50you're going to hear. And read nonetheless, the Holy
- 4:53Spirit included in his word for a reason and the inclusion of
- 4:57the story, invites us to explore and investigate.
- 5:01What it is that God wants to say with great, humility and
- 5:03eagerness. And so it before we begin, we
- 5:06have to trust that the Lord has brought us this detailed account
- 5:12with the purpose of giving us valuable lessons.
- 5:16Valuable Treasures, no matter how dark or uneasy it's going to
- 5:21be to digest. And so, with all that being
- 5:24said, I want to read the first few verses and then we will take
- 5:26our time to understand what is taking place in verse 1.
- 5:30Of chapter 13, we read now. Absalom.
- 5:34David's son had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar.
- 5:40And after a Time am ninh David's son.
- 5:43Loved her. An eminent was so tormented that
- 5:46he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar for.
- 5:50She was a virgin and has seemed impossible to eminent to do
- 5:54anything to her. But and then had a friend.
- 6:01Whose name was jonadab the son of shamya, David's, brother, and
- 6:06Jonah. Dad was a very crafty, man, and
- 6:11he said, to him, o, son of the king.
- 6:14Why are you so Haggard morning after morning?
- 6:17Will you not tell me? And, and said to him, I love
- 6:21Tamar, my brother Absalom sister.
- 6:25Johnny Depp said to him lie down on your bed and pretend to be
- 6:30ill and when your father comes to see, you say to him, let my
- 6:35sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat and prepare the
- 6:39food in my site that I may see it and eat it from her hand.
- 6:46I want us to begin this study by looking at three things
- 6:49concerning this man and then the first thing is going to be
- 6:52eminence. Privilege.
- 6:56The second thing will be eminence.
- 6:59Passions. And lastly, we're going to look
- 7:01at em nen's pressure. Emmons privilege.
- 7:06Verse one. Tells us clearly that he was
- 7:09David's son. You heard me say earlier that he
- 7:12was not just one of David's Sons.
- 7:14He was the eldest son according to 1st Chronicles, 3 verse 1.
- 7:18Now, all of that should paint the picture of the privilege
- 7:22that this young man had he was royalty.
- 7:25He was born into unmeasured prosperity and it was born into
- 7:30a world with unlimited opportunity.
- 7:33And with all of the prestige and the position and the resources
- 7:37that were made available to eminent on top of that, the
- 7:41favorable blessings that would come to him simply because of
- 7:43his birth order. This man was so far from being
- 7:47wholly so far from being whole so far from being in the will of
- 7:53God which promises great blessing and protection.
- 7:57And I think that's insightful for many reasons, especially in
- 7:59the culture that we're living in today, because the leaders of
- 8:02our country proposed, very Vain and Halo strategies with the
- 8:06promise, that it will bring us that much closer to Harmony in
- 8:09society. These methods include something
- 8:13along the lines of if we just give troublemakers a better
- 8:18environment than they will calm down, and they will build
- 8:24themselves up, and they will build a better future for
- 8:27themselves and for their offspring and for their
- 8:29surrounding area. Or if we just offer more
- 8:33financial assistance to those who are self-destructive, then
- 8:38then we will see some level of peace in our midst.
- 8:43We know that Adam and Eve already proves that to be wrong,
- 8:46they were in a perfect environment and they messed
- 8:48everything up. And that is vividly described
- 8:52even here, Illustrated with M, then with so much at his
- 8:55disposal. He was intensely corrupt within
- 9:00he would not only destroy his life but those around him
- 9:03innocent parties. Resources.
- 9:06Don't regenerate people the Holy Spirit.
- 9:09Only does that Transformation comes from the inside out, not
- 9:14from the outside. In if you attempt to change
- 9:18things from the outside in, you're wasting your time and
- 9:20you're wasting your resources. If we want to see neighborhoods,
- 9:24altered, if we want to see cities, altered if you want to
- 9:26see schools, altered if we want to see all these things that we
- 9:29desire to see, begins with the human heart and you can't
- 9:34change. What is immaterial with that,
- 9:35which is material only the Holy Spirit can come in with the
- 9:38truth of the gospel and bring about the transformation.
- 9:41That is necessary. Go to cause a ripple effect
- 9:44around day-to-day life. And in here, proves his
- 9:49biography reminds us that you can be a prince in a palace.
- 9:53It still caused havoc in your own life.
- 9:56Around those things that you think will promise so much
- 10:01pleasure and satisfaction and she's not going to happen.
- 10:05There's a wonderful proverb that came to mind when I read about a
- 10:07man's biography, very briefly. And it is this and Proverbs 15.
- 10:1016, we are told better is a little with the fear of the Lord
- 10:16than great treasure with trouble with it.
- 10:19Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure
- 10:23with trouble with it. I love how the parallelism
- 10:26there. Shows us that the spirit
- 10:28contrast, the fear of the Lord with trouble.
- 10:32You want to avoid trouble, get the fear of God, you want to
- 10:36invite trouble, remove the fear of God.
- 10:41And that proverb also gives us an ultimatum in some sense. if
- 10:48you had a choice between having great treasure void of the fear
- 10:51of God, governing your life, Or with contentment accepting much
- 10:58little. But having the fear of the Lord
- 11:00reigning over your life, choose the latter.
- 11:04Always, you are way better off. Having the fear of the Lord than
- 11:08unlimited numbers on that screen.
- 11:10When you click into your bank account or whatever, things that
- 11:12you can do at the snap of a finger, better is little with
- 11:16the fear of the Lord than great treasure would trouble with it.
- 11:19And all how the Bible even tells us how many occasions that there
- 11:21is much trouble that comes with great wealth.
- 11:25I wouldn't ask God for more in this life unless you are
- 11:28saturated and anchored in your reverence for God who he is, and
- 11:35what he's able to do or else you're headed for trouble?
- 11:38I'm telling you. So, we look at a man's
- 11:40privilege, right? We look at a man's privilege.
- 11:43Now, we look at his passions and we read here that he loved
- 11:46Tamar, who is David's daughter from another mother.
- 11:52This is a man's half sister. They have the same father.
- 11:57And what's interesting is all we know about her is that she was
- 12:00beautiful, which tells me she her mom must have been beautiful
- 12:03because Absalom her brother was also a very handsome man.
- 12:08So says something about the mother.
- 12:11She was beautiful. She was a virgin and she was the
- 12:14sister of Absalom and were told about Absalom early on because
- 12:18we're being prepared, he's going to be key instigator to David's,
- 12:21upcoming troubles and problems. He's going to be a main
- 12:24character in a Lifting much pain to David's life.
- 12:27The love that a man had for Tamar here.
- 12:30Raises a red flag, doesn't it? Why?
- 12:35yeah, you know, it and on top of that, we are told according to
- 12:40Leviticus 18 9. We are told plain and clear that
- 12:42it is prohibited to have any kind of intimate relationship
- 12:46with people from your immediate family.
- 12:48So this is a law thing. This is not just a personal
- 12:51opinion thing or a cultural thing.
- 12:53This is even inscribed in the law.
- 12:56And so we already know something about about em nen's desires,
- 13:00their unnatural and they are unlawful according to the law of
- 13:03God. It's clear and this brief
- 13:06insight into this man's heart already.
- 13:08It conveys that he was a man who lacked character and obvious
- 13:12conviction. He loved tame our, he's about to
- 13:17do something, simply because of what he feels, he feels these
- 13:22strong emotions, and that's going to determine how he's
- 13:26going to act. And just a few short moments,
- 13:29even though it violates God's clear commands, it doesn't
- 13:33matter to him then and I can't help but be reminded of the
- 13:37Mantra of our day. The most of the Abominable
- 13:41things that we're parading and tall. flirting is all done in
- 13:44the name of what Love is not love.
- 13:50It's all love. Just just slap the label love on
- 13:52and we can justify it. No matter how illegitimate those
- 13:58impulses are it is often backed up by what infatuation and
- 14:04strong attraction and sometimes even this love element or this
- 14:11love idea, it's love, it's love. And if we dismiss God's
- 14:18parameters of what we should act on and what we should resist by
- 14:22the power of the Holy Spirit, live under that Banner long
- 14:27enough, and you will be led into whether individually or as a
- 14:31culture and to perversions As we will see here, this is going to
- 14:36be a very perverted thing that's about to take place and it's
- 14:39true across the board. If you live under that Mantra,
- 14:43if you justify your worldview by subjective, understanding of
- 14:48what love means or what love is or what love feels like or what
- 14:51love does, you're headed for it. Great.
- 14:54Great confusion, and Abomination.
- 14:57As Paul tells me in 1st Corinthians 13 6 that love
- 15:00rejoices with the truth. If my love contradicts the
- 15:06truth, it's not love. It's something else.
- 15:09It rejoices with the truth. And we see here that this man's
- 15:14love, whatever it is. It's not true, love because it's
- 15:16not love in truth. In fact, when you read verse 2,
- 15:19as you heard it, you're going to see the quality of this man's
- 15:21affections for this woman. And a man was so tormented that
- 15:26he made himself ill because of his sister.
- 15:29Now, look at the language here for.
- 15:30She was a virgin and it seemed impossible to amanat to do
- 15:34anything to her. That's not love language.
- 15:37That's lust language. And the torment of this man was
- 15:45not that Tamar was a upstanding woman who was unwilling to be
- 15:49allured by fellow men. It was because as a princess as
- 15:54a daughter of the king and as a virgin she was protected in a
- 15:57certain way. Physically.
- 15:58I'm speaking of she lived in a certain place she was constantly
- 16:03surrounded by certain people. She was protected she was
- 16:05guarded and this bothered and and because he wanted just one
- 16:10opportunity To be with her in order to take advantage of her.
- 16:15I'm already looking at some of your faces, you're already
- 16:16Disturbed. Hang on.
- 16:18It's going to get it's going to get darker.
- 16:21And so what we see here is that this man was so obviously
- 16:26Disturbed that he came to the point where he became sick,
- 16:29physically sick. He couldn't eat, he couldn't
- 16:32sleep, and it was, it was noticeable.
- 16:35So noticeable, that one of his close friends, asked him what
- 16:38was going on. And so this temptation, morphed
- 16:41into an obsession And that is an ins fault.
- 16:48We can argue that the feelings that end in had were Beyond his
- 16:52control, right? You can't you can't necessarily
- 16:54control what visits your emotions or what ideas spring up
- 16:58in your mind. But em and fetid.
- 17:03He nurtured it, he entertained it, he imagined it, he
- 17:07fantasized about it and it became stronger and it took a
- 17:10greater control over his life to the point where it spilled over
- 17:13into his actual appearance. And that's what we see here in
- 17:19verse to do, we not? And it was so tormented that he
- 17:23made himself, he made himself ill He allowed himself to come
- 17:32to this point. He allowed those feelings to
- 17:35drive him to such a low state. And so be reminded I'm sure many
- 17:41of us in here would be would be very hesitant to share what has
- 17:45cross through our minds. You may not be able to determine
- 17:50that but what you can determine is how far it goes.
- 17:54And that is completely our responsibility.
- 17:58And one of the means by which the Inflation of these
- 18:05Temptations becoming so much more.
- 18:07One of the means by which we can puncture that.
- 18:09So it deflates and has a less of a grip on our hearts.
- 18:15Is by God, providing people outside of us to speak into our
- 18:19lives. To keep us accountable to remind
- 18:23us of God's truth. And to keep us in the right lane
- 18:29before we allow self-deception to steer Us in the wrong
- 18:32direction. I've quoted this verse so many
- 18:35times, I hope you memorize it. You've heard me preach at a
- 18:37Maranatha. You heard me reference it from
- 18:39time to time. We're told in Hebrews 3:13 but
- 18:42exhort one another every day. As long as it is called today,
- 18:46miss any of you be deceived or hardened by the deceitfulness of
- 18:50sin. The see the prescription there,
- 18:53the plan, their exhort one another every day.
- 18:57As long as it is called today, less your heart become hardened
- 19:01by the deceitfulness of sin. And so God has prescribed
- 19:07outside sources, namely people, who love the truth, and love him
- 19:14to play a part in keeping my heart, soft and tender lest I
- 19:19become crystallized. In the passions of My Flesh.
- 19:25That is something that and then unfortunately lacked because the
- 19:28the straw that's going to break the camel's back.
- 19:31So to speak is going to be the wrong friend because what we're
- 19:36told there and Hebrews 3:13 it works in the - positively if I
- 19:41have the right, people around me, who exhort me?
- 19:43Then I can assure greater safety in my sanctification.
- 19:48By the same token. If I have the wrong people, they
- 19:53can encourage me into unholiness and sin degradation.
- 20:01Eminence privilege, Eminence passions, Eminence pressure.
- 20:06Look at verse 3 again. Five words.
- 20:11But am then had a friend. But and then had a friend.
- 20:20Those five words would shape his future and the future of others.
- 20:25It is the sad commentary of the turning point of this man's life
- 20:30but and then had a friend and unfortunately, it can be said of
- 20:35many that they are not where they're supposed to be.
- 20:40Because fill in the Blake, had a friend fill in the blank, had a
- 20:45friend and then had a friend and the language there.
- 20:48But and and had a friend, it implies that.
- 20:52What a man is about to do was Was in great part stirred up by
- 20:58this friend that we're about to read about.
- 21:01Was lead and encouraged by this man.
- 21:05And so here's the thing, whether you and I want to admit it or
- 21:08not, it is it is true. The people we allow in our inner
- 21:12circles, have future shaping influence, whether you're aware
- 21:17of that or not, you've heard the popular saying, show me your
- 21:22friends, your five closest friends and I'll show you would
- 21:24be in five years. I don't know if I butchered or
- 21:25not something along those lines, but it's true.
- 21:27I understand the sentiment understand the argument.
- 21:29I understand the philosophy. It's biblical.
- 21:32It's biblical. And then had a friend.
- 21:36And it was that verse At the Holy Spirit used in my life to
- 21:40help me identify people throughout my life and to place
- 21:44them into categories. Among many can I share those
- 21:46categories with you two simple categories?
- 21:50Among many, there are other categories as well.
- 21:53There are people in my life who are going to one either, help me
- 21:57fight my Temptation or two, they will help me fuel my temptation.
- 22:04There are people who are going to help me fight my Temptation
- 22:08or they're going to fuel my Temptation one.
- 22:12I am to embrace and the other I am to resist and reject in
- 22:17humility but also in great wisdom. and that is a very
- 22:24helpful way to navigate in your life as people come in and out
- 22:28and understand that in the same way, God brings people in your
- 22:31life to bless you, Satan does the same to curse you God has
- 22:36his agents. God has his ambassadors.
- 22:38So this the devil And so, you know, people that you can say
- 22:42you're a blessing your gift to me.
- 22:44Well, no. This the enemy will also do the
- 22:46same to bring about a burden instead of a blessing.
- 22:50And so you and I need the discernment to be able to say is
- 22:53this a person that's going to help me fight the good fight of
- 22:56Faith or is this person going to dramatically influence me in the
- 23:01wrong direction? Unfortunately in a case jointed
- 23:06that was the ladder and the descriptions of who, this man is
- 23:09given to us in. This text is instrumental in
- 23:12helping us, be able to discern beyond the surface level.
- 23:16So there are things about Jonah dad that will help you.
- 23:18And I to some degree, be able to look past what we might be
- 23:22tricked by and to understand how it is.
- 23:24I can qualify worthy, candidates in my inner circle, Because
- 23:29relationships is important in our walk with the Lord.
- 23:34Let's look at a few things. What's the man's name?
- 23:39Does anybody know what that name means?
- 23:42Jonah. That wouldn't it be you ended up
- 23:45Unidad? Yo.
- 23:53Yes, we were there almost. Jehovah is willing.
- 23:59Jehovah is willing. What's the big deal?
- 24:03Here's the big deal. Jonadab obviously, has a name
- 24:07that identifies a truth about the true God.
- 24:12Jonah would have had an identity that was close to whenever you
- 24:15would call upon him. Whenever he was referred to,
- 24:17whenever he was asked for something, the here would be
- 24:21reminded of something concerning God.
- 24:25Now here's the problem. Although he had an identity in
- 24:28that his worldview strongly contradicted, the god that his
- 24:32name represented, here's the lesson for you.
- 24:36And I, it really doesn't matter if that person, whatever kind of
- 24:43relationship they have to you. They identify with God.
- 24:50If they claim things about God, if they have a label of Truth on
- 24:53their lives, they profess they post has very little value to
- 25:00whether or not that person is worthy to walk.
- 25:02Hand-in-hand with you in this life you have to look past that
- 25:07and it was a psalmist said in Psalm 119, very clear that
- 25:10they're not verse 63. I am a companion of all who.
- 25:14What? Who fear you?
- 25:18I am a companion in Psalm 119 verse 63.
- 25:21I am a companion of all who fear you of those who keep your
- 25:26precepts and Sam, a companion of all those, who believe in you.
- 25:31I'm a companion of all those who confess, you know, I am a
- 25:34companion of those who fear you of those who keep your precepts.
- 25:38In other words, I'm looking at the observable traits of your
- 25:41life. The convictions that are lived
- 25:45out or not lived out, that's what I'm looking for.
- 25:47When I determined that, this is a person who truly keeps the
- 25:50precepts of God. I'm going to be your companion,
- 25:53I'll allow you to be mine. It didn't add any value to end
- 25:59in the fact that Jonah that was named Jonah Dobbin.
- 26:01That his name was identified with the truth of who the true
- 26:03God is. So be careful.
- 26:06Be careful. Oh he says he's a Christian and
- 26:09he's cute, who cares? Does he fear the lord?
- 26:14Does he keep the precepts of the Lord?
- 26:16Be careful. If that's your standard then
- 26:19you're headed for trouble. I'm telling you if all your
- 26:21standard is that he's wanted to come to church, 36 weeks out of
- 26:24the year and he calls himself a Christian be very, very careful.
- 26:29Secondly, we learn that Jonah that was also not amnesty
- 26:34friend. He was Emmons cousin don't we
- 26:36see that? And it had a friend whose name
- 26:39was Joanna? The son of shimei David's
- 26:40brother first cousins, first cousins, so we have permission
- 26:46to believe that they have history together.
- 26:48They shared an upbringing, they probably had many memories
- 26:52growing up. Over the years.
- 26:56And such a relationship with long history can be a gift, but
- 26:59it can also be a curse. And the reason why it can be a
- 27:02curse is because that kind of a history, those ties the
- 27:06memories, the laughter, the joys that cries, all those things can
- 27:10have a very binding influence on someone's Allegiance.
- 27:16And the trouble here is a trouble that Jesus predicted
- 27:18about discipleship, that one can elevate a person whether in
- 27:22their family or outside their family to the point where
- 27:25they're denied true discipleship.
- 27:30Because what will decipher and determine whether a blessing or
- 27:34cursing come from a close member of our family or close friend
- 27:37that we grew up with is whether or not they take precedence over
- 27:41the word of God. If that person has more
- 27:45Authority or sway in your thinking and in your planning
- 27:49and in your decisions, more than the voice of the Lord that's
- 27:54troubling. That's dangerous.
- 27:58And that was the case for this man.
- 28:01John had that very like they had a very special place in his
- 28:03heart and he lacked the conviction to be able to
- 28:06determine I will deny all other voices.
- 28:13If they encouraged me to deny the voice of my shepherd.
- 28:18If any advice or counsel will come and conflict with what God
- 28:22has made clear to me that I must stand with my God.
- 28:26Even if I Stand Alone, that was so void in a man's life.
- 28:31And there's a side note for this as well because Jonah dab is
- 28:35presented in a way like people in our lives that are almost
- 28:41unavoidable. You have family that are
- 28:44unavoidable sometimes, right? I mean there's there's
- 28:48celebrations or even a home that you have to walk into day after
- 28:52day where you're going to meet people and do life with people
- 28:55that don't see the way you see that don't live the way you
- 28:59live. And here's the warning, based on
- 29:01what we see with jonadab and eminent be aware of allowing the
- 29:05familiarity of other people's presence to erode that strong
- 29:11anchoring. Conviction of living before God.
- 29:17A living before God because sometimes things can just over
- 29:22time, begin to have a firmer grasp on you.
- 29:27And so, constantly be aware, be vigilant be strong, stay in the
- 29:31presence of God day after day, lest over time.
- 29:36Someone that is near and dear would hijack.
- 29:40Something that was so strong at one point.
- 29:45Lastly, we learned something else about John adapt.
- 29:48What do we said? What are we told about what he
- 29:51was like, he was a very crafty man.
- 29:54A very crafty man. Now depending on the context
- 29:57that can be really good or really bad and we already know
- 29:59that this is bad, this is a flag and it's not only evidence in
- 30:02how jonadab is about to give and proposed a scheme for a moment
- 30:06in order to satisfy his lust, we even see it in the next time
- 30:10that he's mentioned in this very same story.
- 30:13The next time jonadab is introduced to us after this
- 30:15whole ordeal. Gives us greater understanding
- 30:19of just how conniving he really was.
- 30:21Can I show it to you? Scroll down?
- 30:22You're in Chapter 13, scroll down to verse 32.
- 30:27Here's what happens and then was assassinated.
- 30:31Okay, Absalom takes vengeance. He kills and then and news comes
- 30:38to David and like when you play telephone things, get
- 30:41mistranslated very quickly. So news arrives to David and
- 30:45here's the news, all of the king's sons have died.
- 30:49David is overcome with grief. He expresses the pain of such a
- 30:53tragedy Calamity and who's on the scene to bring about the
- 30:57accurate report. Jonah, dad and look what he
- 31:00says. But jonadab the son of shamya.
- 31:03David's brother said, let not my Lord.
- 31:07Suppose that they have killed all the young men The king's
- 31:12Sons for n and alone is dead. This is the part.
- 31:16You ready for by the command of Absalom.
- 31:20This has been determined from the day.
- 31:23He violated his sister Tamar. Did you see it?
- 31:31What's concerning about that report?
- 31:36That's he knew that he knew from the day that Tamar was raped at
- 31:42and Absalom. Rather had it in his heart to
- 31:45plot to kill em. How did he know?
- 31:52How did he know? Was he confident to Absalom as
- 31:55well? and if he had known, Makes you
- 32:01wonder did. He tried to convince Absalom not
- 32:03to do it? Did he try to convince Absalom?
- 32:08Not to cause even more grief by returning, evil with evil, okay?
- 32:13More importantly, if he had known as he claims, why didn't
- 32:18he go tell a man about it? What happened when Rebecca
- 32:23learned that Esau was comforting himself with the thought of
- 32:27killing Jacob. What did she tell?
- 32:29Jacob to do, go to laban's house, go to my brother's house
- 32:32fleets, your uncle, I will call for you when his anger subsides,
- 32:36which she never does, which probably shows that he's estate
- 32:38angry for a long time. Yeah, when you care about
- 32:42something, you hear that somebody's trying to kill them,
- 32:44you kind of give them a heads-up.
- 32:48We don't see any of that. We have no reason to doubt that.
- 32:53Jonah that did know about it and if he did know about it and
- 32:55here's what we can conclude even from our introduction to this,
- 32:58man. He did not have an ins best
- 33:01interest in mind. He did not.
- 33:04He did not really care about eminent not have his future in
- 33:09mind. And listen, that might concern
- 33:12some people because we wonder what's a person's heart.
- 33:15Truly for me, how do I discern, who to yoke myself with?
- 33:19And listen. God is gracious.
- 33:21He can, he can provide many ways of clarity, but if you want one,
- 33:26clear indication, any person, who persistently encourages you
- 33:30to sin does not care about you. Even if their deception is
- 33:38coated with words, like what we see back in verse four, look at
- 33:41how he speaks to and then when he sees him, so dejected and
- 33:45troubled, Oh, son of the king. Why are you so Haggard morning
- 33:49after morning? Will you not tell me.
- 33:54He's a snake. And in said to him, I love Tamar
- 33:58my brother Absalom sister. so, if you want to know whether
- 34:03somebody is for you or against you, Do they pull you away from
- 34:07the will of God? Do they encourage you to be
- 34:11deceiving and to step outside of the character of Christ likeness
- 34:15in order to achieve something because that's exactly what
- 34:19Jonah does for this man admin. And so we are realized something
- 34:25about this man. He's dangerous.
- 34:29Too bad engine could not see it. Because what we see in verse six
- 34:32shows that he ate it all up verse 6.
- 34:35Let's come back to our main text, shall we?
- 34:38In verse 6, we read. So M and laid down and pretended
- 34:41to be ill. And when the king came to see
- 34:44him and said to the king, please let my sister Tamar come and
- 34:49make a couple of cakes on my site that I may eat it from her
- 34:52hand. Some people blame David for not
- 34:56being suspecting of the plot, that Edmund was brewing here.
- 35:02I personally have more understanding toward this father
- 35:06because I can't imagine anybody immediately thinking about an
- 35:12unthinkable act, taking place. Between the most unexpected
- 35:18people. And so we can give some kind of
- 35:23mercy here to David. Others would say that just gives
- 35:28everything he he's asked for from his children, he just
- 35:31splurges them and that might be true.
- 35:34But here we see that he just comes in to check up on his son.
- 35:38I mean you hear when even a celebrity has a scar on their
- 35:41face or something it makes headline news.
- 35:42So it's obvious that news has gone around that.
- 35:46The firstborn of the king is ill.
- 35:47So here comes David, a check up on his boy and the boy makes a
- 35:51request. I want my sister to come in to
- 35:53feed me so I'm too weak to feed myself. and instead of talking
- 35:58more about David, I would like for us to consider the character
- 36:01of Tamar What are we told in verse 1.
- 36:04She was beautiful verse 2. We're told she's a virgin.
- 36:08And what we see here is that when he goes to tame our David
- 36:11and asks for her to make a couple of kicks for her brother.
- 36:13She obeys her father And she is willing to drop everything and
- 36:19immediately come to the service of her sick.
- 36:22Half-brother okay this is a woman of character.
- 36:27She's praiseworthy. She's pure and even when you see
- 36:30her resisting the attack, her appeal.
- 36:34Her proposal is so filled with wisdom and even respect though
- 36:40she stands before a monster. And when I considered the
- 36:47portrait of Tamar and what's about to happen to her, I could
- 36:51not help. But think what perhaps you might
- 36:53be thinking even now how could God allow this to happen to such
- 36:57an outstanding lady, a young woman who has guarded her life,
- 37:04who was chased Who kept herself pure, who obviously had a
- 37:09knowledge of the word of God who cared about her reputation of
- 37:13the reputation of Israel of even her own brother's reputation who
- 37:17had a sense of right and wrong. That was clear in the way that
- 37:23she carried herself and presented herself, how could God
- 37:27allow this? We can also think about Uriah.
- 37:34The Godly Man remember him. Who had such loyalty to the Lord
- 37:39and to his King. Who has such loyalty to the
- 37:43cause of the God that he loves so dearly.
- 37:46And yet, he was deceived enough to the point where he
- 37:50orchestrated his own death and tame, our though, she is admire
- 37:55ball in. So many ways would also be
- 37:58attacked in a way that she would be ruined for the rest of her
- 38:01life, to some extent. This opens up so much discussion
- 38:07about suffering in our life suffering in our world.
- 38:11In fact, when you read chapter 13, I can't find one mention of
- 38:14God. And some people that we know
- 38:18some things that we read, we wonder where is God in all of
- 38:21this. I'm sure you have answers, I'm
- 38:26sure I can present some answers. But one thing that puts my heart
- 38:31at ease to an extent is that the judge of the earth will do.
- 38:36Right? One day, he will make sure every
- 38:41wrongdoer pays and every victim is restored.
- 38:46He can do it in this life, but he will definitely do it where
- 38:50it really counts. And that's an eternity So, this
- 38:54poor young lady. Is about to be violated in a
- 38:59very serious way. and in verse 8, We can even read it to get an
- 39:08idea of the scene. It's almost in slow motion.
- 39:11It's almost as though the author by the spirit is trying to make
- 39:14us feel the suspense because we, the reader know what's about to
- 39:18happen and, and Tamar and her innocence is completely
- 39:21oblivious. She's just trying to be a good
- 39:23sister. Good daughter.
- 39:26Verse 8. So Tamar went to her brother and
- 39:29his house where he was lying down and she took dough and
- 39:32knead it and make cakes in his sight and bake the cakes.
- 39:36Like that's very detailed. Like we're supposed to Envision
- 39:39this or supposed to see these verbs being lived out and she
- 39:43took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to
- 39:48eat and, and, and send send out everyone from me.
- 39:53So everyone went out from him. Then end and said to tame our
- 39:57bring the food into the chamber that I may eat it from your hand
- 40:01and Tamar took the cakes, she had made and brought them into
- 40:05the chamber to end, and her brother, every single step,
- 40:08every single movement is recorded.
- 40:11And our hearts should be racing. we see here that and then pushes
- 40:20everybody out all the servants leave Many of David had any
- 40:25reason not to worry. Among many reasons.
- 40:28One, is this that there were servants were going to be
- 40:31present as Tamar was serving at her brother and now, that's not
- 40:34the case. And wants privacy sin is often
- 40:40encouraged by secrecy. Sin is often stimulated by
- 40:46darkness by the lack of witnesses. but God sees all God
- 40:54sees all that. That is what the fear of the
- 40:56Lord entails. The fear of the Lord is a drum
- 41:00that continually beats in the conscience that says, nothing is
- 41:04private. Nothing Is concealed.
- 41:08All things will be revealed. God is here.
- 41:11God is taking note. God will call into account.
- 41:16That's what the fear of the Lord does.
- 41:17When it resides in the heart. It beats that drum loud and
- 41:21clear. obviously it was lacking in this, man, because he thought
- 41:25if he just pushed out the servants that he could satiate
- 41:28his sensual fantasies And so he calls everybody to leave.
- 41:35And this is what we see in verse 11.
- 41:37But when she brought them near to him to eat, he took ahold of
- 41:43her and set their come lie with me.
- 41:45My sister like that's pretty disturbing.
- 41:50In the same appeal of asking somebody to lie with you, you
- 41:53could also save my sister. And Tamar's words here.
- 41:59In her rebuke. Offer wonderful incense of the
- 42:03blinding power of Temptation because Temptation can really
- 42:11put blinders on our reasoning on our sensibilities.
- 42:16On our boundaries. I want you to see just a few of
- 42:20these insights of what temptation is capable of.
- 42:24If we do not take captive these thoughts, if we do not resist
- 42:28it, we do not fight. If we do not bring them before,
- 42:30God and bring Truth to combat that, which tries to conquer.
- 42:36Let's see what she says verse 12, she answered him.
- 42:39No, my brother do not violate me for such a thing is not done in
- 42:44Israel. Do not do this outrageous thing.
- 42:47As for me where could I carry my shame?
- 42:51And as for you you would be as one of the outrageous fools and
- 42:55Israel. Now, therefore please speak to
- 42:58the king for. He will not withhold me from
- 43:00you. What do you see out of that,
- 43:03that you think is valuable in light of what I just said in
- 43:05light of? Because she's the voice of
- 43:07reason. Here she is bringing to Emmons.
- 43:10Attention. What was clearly lacking in his
- 43:14understanding what stands out What's that the consequences?
- 43:24Surely, yes. Okay, so why is she proposing a
- 43:33different way out? Especially when marriage between
- 43:38siblings was obviously prohibited.
- 43:44Yeah, I think it is. It's a way out.
- 43:47It's a way to buy time. It's a way to just put him in
- 43:52his place so that she can escape that's what I believe.
- 43:57Anything else? Yes.
- 44:04Yeah. Where should I carry my shame?
- 44:05Do you realize what this is going to do to me?
- 44:08And she follows that by saying do you realize what this is
- 44:10going to do to you? So here's the first thing that I
- 44:13see look here again, at verse 12, she answered him know my
- 44:18brother, she addresses him as her brother and that's
- 44:21intentional. The reason why it's intentional
- 44:25even though this is an unusual case of immorality, it provides
- 44:28an important principle. That lust Has the ability to
- 44:32erase the boundaries in our relationships between people
- 44:38lust has that kind of clouding effect.
- 44:41So when less is unrestrained, it doesn't care if that person is
- 44:45somebody else's spouse. That's it. it doesn't, it
- 44:51doesn't care if then if the desires are unnatural, according
- 44:56to Romans chapter 1, It doesn't care if other parties who are
- 45:00not directly involved will be harmed by the news of that
- 45:05desire, being acted out. And so she she immediately
- 45:11brings to his attention, you're my brother, he had no problem
- 45:15saying, you're my sister obviously, but he, he's now
- 45:20hearing from her lips, you're my own blood you, and I, we have
- 45:26the same father. And if we are not careful with
- 45:32our conscience, our appetites as we are witnessing in our own
- 45:36culture can become animalistic. Animalistic.
- 45:42We just whenever anybody's in heat, they act in that.
- 45:47And that's how base we can become when we blunt our
- 45:50conscience over and over again. And we decide to worship
- 45:54creation rather than the Creator refusing to give him.
- 45:56Thanks, and Glory, we open the floodgates of Untold, kind of
- 46:03behavior. And this is what's happening to
- 46:07this, man, sinned doesn't remind you of the value of the person
- 46:13before you sin doesn't nudge to you.
- 46:17Of the identity, the spiritual identity of that person that
- 46:21person is a son or a daughter of the king sin doesn't do that.
- 46:26Sin just Harps over and over, you'll be satisfied, you'll be
- 46:31satisfied, you'll be satisfied. My brother.
- 46:35Secondly, what is she called this thing?
- 46:40Do not violate me for such a thing is not done in Israel.
- 46:42Do not do this. I thought it was love.
- 46:49outrageous thing, some translations say, Folly other
- 46:52translations, say, If you had the nasb.
- 46:59Disgraceful. Temptation, always presents us.
- 47:04The shiny side of sin always, never shows you the mold and the
- 47:09vileness, the hides underneath the veneer of the pleasure that
- 47:12it offers never and will never do that. and admin thought that
- 47:18this was love, but in reality was outrageous, If you and I
- 47:22don't allow ourselves to have truth frame, how we view the
- 47:27things that promised us pleasure then that which is outrageous
- 47:32that which is bitter can become sweet.
- 47:36So she's trying to remind it. This is out of bounds.
- 47:39This is unspeakable filth, and in his own understanding and his
- 47:44own world. You it was love, it was love.
- 47:48So she's trying to preach truth into his heart.
- 47:51I see no other thing here. Thirdly, Temptation does not
- 47:58inform you about house in can ruin your reputation.
- 48:02Our sister said it. She knew the shame that she
- 48:04would carry because of this and the shame would be that she
- 48:07would become less of a prospect for marriage.
- 48:10She would have been violated, she would have lost her
- 48:12virginity and because this would, this would become known
- 48:16people would now be much less willing to engage with her
- 48:21because of what had happened to her. but she also goes beyond
- 48:24that and tells him you will be known as one of the fools in
- 48:28Israel, you'll be known as one of the was one of the Ones.
- 48:34Who lack sense? You're royalty, you're a prince.
- 48:38You have so much ahead of you. But sin doesn't care Temptation,
- 48:41doesn't care. It doesn't tell you about your
- 48:43future. Always always always rehearses
- 48:46the few seconds of pleasure as though it lasts for eternity.
- 48:51When in fact, it's the consequences that always Outlast
- 48:55with the pain, in comparison to whatever pleasure you experience
- 48:58always. So she's trying to tell him of
- 49:02the stain that will come to his name.
- 49:05If he performs this, even these few minutes of realizing what
- 49:09you've been tormented by will end up tormenting you and then
- 49:13be careful. I always whenever reach
- 49:16Simpsons, I always think about that.
- 49:18This guy was flirting with temptation.
- 49:19He just kept going closer. Close to revealing how he lost
- 49:22his anointing and it just like you lost it all the potential
- 49:26that you had the future that you had the story.
- 49:30You could have had the Miracles that God could have done three
- 49:32for what, for, what to lay your head on a prostitute slap, who
- 49:36cares? Lastly, I said lastly earlier, I
- 49:44think, but there is something else that I see with This
- 49:46Woman's wise words through her voice, she tells us what an and
- 49:52could not see that in Temptation, there is a way out
- 49:56no matter how strong or persuasive or powerful
- 49:59overwhelming. It may seem there is a way out
- 50:01and she she kind of gives that by telling him of a potential
- 50:07option. Hey we can get married.
- 50:10Now we just discussed This was she genuine in that request
- 50:15makes me wonder if she knew enough about her dad and how he
- 50:18deals with his sons that if daddy's boy says I want this,
- 50:22he'll give it. Even if it's something like an
- 50:24illegitimate marriage or is it a strategy just to buy more time
- 50:29regardless of why she saying? This one thing is for certain,
- 50:33in terms of principle especially in this.
- 50:36I know it's difficult to try to reconcile this to day-to-day
- 50:39Temptation. This is incestuous rape.
- 50:41It's severe. Here it happens.
- 50:44Unfortunately, in life and I know it's difficult to relate to
- 50:47but the principles are still alive and well in terms of
- 50:49immorality is as a whole There is a way out.
- 50:56So many try to justify their behavior because it seems to
- 50:59overwhelm them and that is not the case.
- 51:01We don't have to give in to our desires.
- 51:04How much more us Christians, who are filled with the Holy Spirit?
- 51:07Jesus Christ, purchased on the cross, with his blood, a power
- 51:11that lives in us, 24/7 as our brother just read early on in
- 51:15Romans chapter 6, sin shall not have dominion over you.
- 51:19Do you realize something about that verse in Romans shinsen
- 51:22will not have dominion over you. That's not a command that's a
- 51:25promise. Yes.
- 51:27Sin will not have dominion will not because you are under grace,
- 51:32not under law. These are promises that Christ
- 51:37purchased for me. How much more can I be assured
- 51:39that in the face of invitation to do wrong to entertain that
- 51:43which is wicked? I can escape I can evade it.
- 51:49God has a better plan. God has a different way out.
- 51:54And when I read the words of Tamar here, you know what I
- 51:56thought to myself as well? If only jonadab had given
- 52:00similar words to his friend, Maybe he wouldn't drive his life
- 52:06into a collision that would cause others to be casualties as
- 52:09well. But here's the thing.
- 52:12Look what we're we're told here after she says everything verse
- 52:1614 but he would not listen to her.
- 52:19Oh so you're willing to listen to jonadab.
- 52:21But when it came to this woman, you're not willing to listen to
- 52:23her in the end, no matter what you say, no matter what kind of
- 52:26accountability, get no matter what kind of sermons you here
- 52:28week after week in the end, in the end, in the end, it's your
- 52:32choice. It's all of our choices.
- 52:35We are all timidly responsible. Yes.
- 52:38What people say or don't say can help us, but we come to the
- 52:41line. Where we make a decision and
- 52:44this is the decision that he makes.
- 52:45I'm going to listen to jonadab My Flesh.
- 52:48I mean, I'm going to ignore what you just said and have you to
- 52:51myself even apart from your own will.
- 52:56And that's what happens verse. 14 says, he would not listen to
- 53:00her being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.
- 53:07It's very dark. Very disheartening, very sad.
- 53:14And what happens here in verse 15 might be surprising to you at
- 53:18first, but it's actually a common response.
- 53:23That is very, very relatable. When people sin, especially in
- 53:30the area of sexual immorality, look at verse 15, then am then
- 53:35hated her. With very great hatred.
- 53:40So that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the
- 53:44love with, which he had loved her.
- 53:48It's like two different people here. you apparently loved her
- 53:53to the point where you were lovesick, you couldn't sleep,
- 53:58you couldn't eat, you couldn't play sports with your friends,
- 54:01you were just consumed with Tamar and now that you've gotten
- 54:06what you wanted. Your hatred for her was greater
- 54:10than whatever love you experience beforehand.
- 54:15How do we how do we explain this?
- 54:16It's actually again, very simple.
- 54:23Once and then fulfilled his fantasy the intense fake love.
- 54:28That was roaring in his heart was quickly replaced with the
- 54:33Testament. And rejection.
- 54:37That determined a new kind of behavior.
- 54:40We already covered that. A man's love wasn't true.
- 54:42Love. It was a counterfeit.
- 54:43He confused lust with love. And sexual sent.
- 54:50This is a very important point because it might bring a lot of
- 54:54answers to people's confusion. Sexual sin.
- 55:01Always carries the potential of causing physical harm, right?
- 55:04We all know that there are risks with that unwanted pregnancy
- 55:08disease and, some people get away with it, some people don't
- 55:15but here's one thing that's for certain the uniqueness of sexual
- 55:19sin is that it guarantees a level of emotional damage that
- 55:26is virtually inescapable. only Christ love and his truth and
- 55:31his gospel can ultimately bring healing to that, to the degree,
- 55:35that people yearn for, But do you see what's happening here,
- 55:39there's there's some confusion here.
- 55:43And am nen's, emotional state. And that is really the fruit.
- 55:48When we step outside of God's guidelines for what he
- 55:52determined in the realm of intimacy with other people.
- 55:58Sexual sin often. Does that you reject his order?
- 56:02You reject his promises. It doesn't just endanger you
- 56:07physically, it brings some damage emotionally here, a
- 56:11couple of way that it happens with the example that is set
- 56:13before us like a madman. When I know this is a unique
- 56:18case, but it's true beyond what we see here.
- 56:22We risk rejecting, despising belittling distancing ourselves
- 56:31from these very same people that we sinned with, or sinned
- 56:36against Because we associate them with the shame that we
- 56:41have. Right?
- 56:45So he could not wait to get rid of her because now she is
- 56:51forever. Brandon in his mind and a
- 56:53forever, reminder of the gross in that he had committed.
- 56:57So he wants nothing to do with her.
- 56:58Get out of my sight, get out of my sight.
- 57:02I don't want you in my life. And though, this is a severe
- 57:08case. It is true and more mild cases.
- 57:12I can use that word. That is why it's extremely
- 57:15important. My brothers and sisters, I say
- 57:17this with a soft heart. Please hear me?
- 57:19I know my voice can sometimes be strong but I hope you can sense.
- 57:24Love laced in these words. So important that in your
- 57:28pursuit of a relationship that aims toward marriage that you
- 57:33do, everything you can with God's promises and his wisdom to
- 57:36maintain Purity because even when there is failure in sin
- 57:41though you have the ambition to be married, the regret and shame
- 57:45can be brought into that marriage and it can cause
- 57:49conflict. In that very same marriage.
- 57:54And so, it's important to keep the future mind.
- 57:57Even though you've made promises to each other, that you will
- 58:00come together. Trust in God's timing.
- 58:03I've never heard, I'd never to this day after 11 years of
- 58:07walking with the Lord and several years of ministry.
- 58:10I'm sure brother Daniel can attest to this.
- 58:12I've never heard in all these years of Ministry of any couple
- 58:14has been married to his said, you know, my sweetheart and I
- 58:18were talking the other night and we thought I wish we fooled
- 58:21around more before we got married.
- 58:23Never heard of it. You know what I do here?
- 58:26I wish we can go back in time and redo it.
- 58:30I wish we can. I wish we can have another shot
- 58:34at the process and the pursuit of coming to marriage.
- 58:37That's what you often hear. Because it brings in distrust,
- 58:42it brings in all these complications and and it just
- 58:47goes to show that God knows what he's talking about when he says
- 58:51just do not awaken love before its time, don't awaken love
- 58:55before its time. It muddies things it muffles
- 58:58things even with the person that you want to be with And if you
- 59:03have made that mistake, listen the Lord again, can redeem,
- 59:07praise God, that you're in Covenant.
- 59:08Now, praise God, that you realize you're wrong.
- 59:10Praise God. That you repented of that wrong
- 59:12and trust that the Lord can now come and mend your ways.
- 59:15And, and be like David where when he was restored, he said, I
- 59:18will now teach transgressors your ways.
- 59:22We'll be able to relay that to others in our lives to say
- 59:25trusting God's wisdom, trust in God's wisdom.
- 59:28Here, we see a man who wanted nothing to do with the woman
- 59:32that he wanted at one point because now she's associated
- 59:36with the shame that he sensed And again, the scenario is
- 59:40related to a Despicable Act of rape but we can still draw
- 59:42another lesson from it. Can we not?
- 59:44And it is this people who view another person's body, as simply
- 59:51as a means to satisfy your selfish desires, if they view
- 59:57your body simply as an object to satisfy yourself, selfishly,
- 1:00:03generally will not show you respect and other matters.
- 1:00:08Generally won't respect you once they realize that they can get
- 1:00:12from you what they want. And I'll show you that in one
- 1:00:15way scroll down to verse 17 of second, Samuel 13.
- 1:00:18Look what he ends up saying to one of the servants about Tamar,
- 1:00:23it breaks my heart. He called the young man who
- 1:00:26served them and said, put this woman out of my presence and
- 1:00:30Bolt the door. After And he just kicked her
- 1:00:33out, like she was garbage. You know what's amazing?
- 1:00:36When you go to the Hebrew of this, there's a word that's
- 1:00:39omitted. When you go to verse 17, you'll
- 1:00:43realize that one word is missing.
- 1:00:44You know what word it is? Woman.
- 1:00:51In the original language, you won't find woman.
- 1:00:53So you don't, you know, what how that translates.
- 1:00:55And if we just honored the original language, put this Put
- 1:01:01this out of my presence. That's how he said it.
- 1:01:06Doesn't even refer to her as a lady.
- 1:01:10Again, he saw her as an object to begin with, and guess what he
- 1:01:12ends up, seeing her still as an object that he just used.
- 1:01:16Like a piece of gum that he chewed up and once it lost its
- 1:01:19flavor, he spat it out. Here's the thing, especially to
- 1:01:23my sister's realize this. There are men out there who are
- 1:01:25like that be very careful, be very careful.
- 1:01:31If that man truly loves you, he will respect you.
- 1:01:35And he will honor God first. And he will as a true worry for
- 1:01:41Christ fight for that Purity. Do things happen to Temptation
- 1:01:45this temptation. Have us as sometimes do we fall?
- 1:01:48Sure. But if there is a person who
- 1:01:50consistently pressures and persist you into wrongdoing,
- 1:01:56that person lacks respect for you.
- 1:02:00And if they lack respect for you for something, so sacred, and
- 1:02:03pure and holy what makes you think they're going to respect
- 1:02:06you in other ways. Keep that in mind.
- 1:02:11Keep that in mind as you are considering a potential spouse
- 1:02:14as a person is perhaps trying to woo you Do they love you enough?
- 1:02:23Do they love you enough to respect you in that way?
- 1:02:26Or would they throw themselves on you and and pressure you?
- 1:02:29If you really loved me, you would do this.
- 1:02:31And I told you, I would be your husband.
- 1:02:33Anyway, we're going to be together.
- 1:02:34Anyway, that's not love, that's not love.
- 1:02:39No matter how strong his affections are no matter what he
- 1:02:43brings about to try to convince you to give that part of
- 1:02:46yourself, be strong, my sister, be careful, my sister.
- 1:02:51Now, that's different than a man who does love you and finds
- 1:02:55himself stumbling with you takes two to tango.
- 1:03:00I get it as I want to talk to Mom talking about aggressive.
- 1:03:05Inconsiderate, overpowering manipulative Behavior.
- 1:03:12Put this out there was that young girl wrecked?
- 1:03:19This is what this man experienced.
- 1:03:21Can I show it to you in one last verse of our Bible study?
- 1:03:24Wow. Time is an amazing thing, isn't
- 1:03:26it? Go to Proverbs 20 verse 17 very
- 1:03:29quickly. Proverbs 2017, I think is a
- 1:03:41wonderful way of wrapping up the segment of this chapter.
- 1:03:44I know it's not the most encouraging Bible study.
- 1:03:48Sometimes the worship team has trouble after a study like this.
- 1:03:51You know what? They ask, what do we sing?
- 1:03:55After you share something like that.
- 1:03:59And to me, despite the content, I always praise God for his
- 1:04:06wisdom. And including these things for
- 1:04:09the sake of my preservation and maximizing on the pleasure that
- 1:04:14he has for my life in yours. Look at 4:17 bread gained by the
- 1:04:18seat is sweet to a man. There's something attractive and
- 1:04:24exhilarating about gaining something through deceit or
- 1:04:27manipulation something that is quick gratification, but look
- 1:04:32how this verse ends. But afterward his mouth will be
- 1:04:36full of gravel. Afterward his mouth will be full
- 1:04:41of gravel. You know, what gravel does if
- 1:04:42it's in your mouth and you chew on it.
- 1:04:44Doesn't taste very good. 12 can break your teeth.
- 1:04:49Three. If you swallow that gravel, it's
- 1:04:51going to have some problems internally long-term effects.
- 1:04:55And that's exactly what Adam is going to experience.
- 1:04:58That thing that was once sweet to him would end up betraying
- 1:05:02him. And so, in one moment, he can
- 1:05:06love it and the next moment he absolutely hates it.
- 1:05:11This is a wonderful commentary on the short-lived Promises of
- 1:05:16sin. It doesn't take very long for us
- 1:05:19to go from. This is what I've been wanting.
- 1:05:23This is what I've been longing for to.
- 1:05:25I hate this, I hate myself. I hate this person.
- 1:05:29I hate that I'm in this predicament.
- 1:05:31I wish I can do it all over again.
- 1:05:34Right. Such is the nature of sin.
- 1:05:38Such is the nature of sin and so that I think equips us
- 1:05:42wonderfully in our Temptation that when that thing looks like
- 1:05:47bread. That will fill us and bring
- 1:05:49flavor to our lives. Look past that and realize that
- 1:05:53it has the potential of becoming gravel dirt rocks.
- 1:05:59And reject it from the get-go. By the grace of God, this can
- 1:06:03happen. With such a Bible study brought
- 1:06:09to a conclusion, may I end with a hopeful thought.
- 1:06:20In Christ, the most grotesque dark heinous, things are
- 1:06:26absolutely Washed by his blood. Absolutely washed.
- 1:06:32And then will not repent and then will not repent.
- 1:06:35David, repented, David repented, and God forgave.
- 1:06:40And then would not repent, and he would pay the Lord, even in
- 1:06:45light of all this, I'm sure knowing his character through
- 1:06:48his word. If M then, And then had enough
- 1:06:52sense to stop in that moment and to Feel the Rush of guilt to
- 1:06:59instead deal with in a very humanistic way, but be broken
- 1:07:03before. God could have had a different
- 1:07:05future different future even maybe a hopeful future, remember
- 1:07:09this? Remember that even when David
- 1:07:12sinned with Bathsheba Married her in an illegitimate way when
- 1:07:18he had repented God recognized. Their Covenant gave them a baby
- 1:07:23named Solomon and reassured them through Nathan.
- 1:07:26I love this boy, I love this boy.
- 1:07:30And my heart breaks for many reasons, with the text that we
- 1:07:32just read. What can it continue in the next
- 1:07:34few weeks. But also, if a man had just
- 1:07:36known That the same God who forgave his dad would also
- 1:07:41forgive him what a different future.
- 1:07:44He would have had, maybe he would have had a family, maybe
- 1:07:47God would have restored, a maybe God would have done something
- 1:07:49through him, but the things that we borrow ourselves from because
- 1:07:53of our stubbornness and our unwillingness to believe that he
- 1:07:56is a forgiving God. I pray that in this place.
- 1:07:59As you you heard some of these dark things, you remember that?
- 1:08:02There is light above it all if you just look up and see that,
- 1:08:07that light is the person of Jesus Christ reach out, even if
- 1:08:10your hands are stained with blood or perversion realize that
- 1:08:14he'll pick you up, wash you and set you on Solid Rock, that's
- 1:08:17the goodness of Jesus Christ. At the same time my brother's my
- 1:08:21sister Let us not be like and fool ourselves thinking that we
- 1:08:26can get away with sin. Because even forgiving sin can
- 1:08:29leave tattoos that we didn't ask, for can leave scars that we
- 1:08:34could have avoided and that's why text like this is given to
- 1:08:37us to be prepared in advance. The trust the promises and the
- 1:08:42warnings of our god. Well, we thank you.
- 1:08:45And we will sing to you. We will sing to you in all
- 1:08:49things because we love the whole counsel of God.
- 1:08:53And Lord, this text before us today reminds us of many things.
- 1:08:58and one thing we are certainly reminded of Is that your word is
- 1:09:03truth? And it sets free.
- 1:09:13Now we visit set free, it keeps free.
- 1:09:17And we want to stay free. Lois.
- 1:09:20Sing to you tonight, we worship you. if we've been warned, we
- 1:09:27praise you for the warning. We've been comforted.
- 1:09:32We shower you with the same, praise and Lord tonight, we pray
- 1:09:35that our faith would be strengthened.
- 1:09:43Now you would be honored with our lives in Jesus name.
- 1:09:46We pray. Amen?
- 1:09:48Shall we stand in worship?
