1:49
[SPEAKER_03]: We got three guests, Barbie Ferreira, Dev and Bostic, and Chandler LaVac.
1:54
[SPEAKER_03]: All to talk about the movie, Mile and Kicks, which is about a 24-year-old music critic gets romantically involved with members of an indie band she decides to publicize, set against Montreal's 2011 indie music scene.
2:08
[SPEAKER_03]: it's it's loosely based on channel of acts actual uh life she was um a critic for spin magazine late uh 2000 early 2010s and uh and this is her second movie should the movie I like movies and now she's back with myelin kicks to kind of look back
2:23
[SPEAKER_03]: at that blog rock era world and the indie rock that came out of it, and then the messiness of us in our 20s.
2:31
[SPEAKER_03]: So we're going to be talking with all three of them.
2:33
[SPEAKER_03]: We'll actually start with with Barbie Ferreira, who's having a big moment right now, you know, having come off of euphoria.
2:40
[SPEAKER_03]: But also, myelin kicks came out the exact same weekend as her starring in Faces of Death as well.
2:46
[SPEAKER_03]: But we're going to talk with, to Barbie about, about playing this version
2:53
[SPEAKER_03]: Montreal, Indy scene of the 2011.
2:56
[SPEAKER_03]: How that kind of personal storytelling changes really the acting process.
2:59
[SPEAKER_03]: And Barbies is going to get in a building a character that's rooted in reality, shape for the screen, pulling from early 20s experiences and messy relationships and the kind of hyper-specific moments that makes the story feel lived in.
3:12
[SPEAKER_03]: She's also going to talk about juggling dual releases with faces of death.
3:17
[SPEAKER_03]: And her hands-on role as a producer and indie filmmaking, her mix of musical influences from
3:21
[SPEAKER_03]: from the warp tour years to one direction, and Alana Smora said, and why she's all in on smaller risk taking films right now.
3:31
[SPEAKER_03]: So let's do this.
3:32
[SPEAKER_03]: We're talking a mile and kicks, the movie.
3:35
[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Mears with Barbie Ferreira.
3:37
[SPEAKER_06]: It looks great.
3:38
[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, the last time I had anything on my walls, it was like one direction and Justin Bieber, and so this is infinitely cooler.
3:46
[SPEAKER_03]: They were cool for you at the moment, right?
3:48
[SPEAKER_06]: They were 16.
3:49
[SPEAKER_06]: I think it was so embarrassing.
3:50
[SPEAKER_06]: They're like 18 or a little being like, I love one direction.
3:52
[SPEAKER_06]: But now I'm like, that's the 15 year olds are supposed to do.
3:55
[SPEAKER_03]: Sure, absolutely.
3:56
[SPEAKER_03]: And now Harry Styles is one of the greatest rock stars.
3:59
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, he's an actual rock star too.
4:02
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
4:02
[SPEAKER_03]: Think of him.
4:03
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like he went from like the pop thing to the actual thing, you know?
4:06
[SPEAKER_06]: I love it.
4:07
[SPEAKER_06]: I'm like, I want to see like, I knew it because see it in his eyes when I was 15.
4:10
[SPEAKER_06]: He's going to be a star.
4:13
[SPEAKER_03]: He's star with it.
4:14
[SPEAKER_03]: We'll speak at a star as you are having the moment right now and congratulations to everything.
4:19
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm, you know, faces a death yes, but my only in kicks that we get to talk about, I mean, what, what, what a time for all this to be happening out of your control all at once.
4:28
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure.
4:29
[SPEAKER_06]: Yes, I know.
4:30
[SPEAKER_06]: It was very weird because the like phase of death, I saw it like I went like over three years ago and then my life kicks was like a couple of summers ago.
4:36
[SPEAKER_06]: So the fact that they're both come down the same week is very random and I not planned for this and I've been trying, I'm not the most organized woman on earth, but we have been putting the calendar invites in so I can, I'm pushing through two movies, we're doing it.
4:52
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, pun completely intended, your own barbing, barbing time right the moment.
4:56
[SPEAKER_06]: Barb in my office as one DM told me.
4:58
[SPEAKER_06]: Barb in my office, it's not quite clicking as much as Barb and I'm her, but I have a faith, I have faith.
5:06
[SPEAKER_03]: You got time to get there.
5:08
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
5:08
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, my late kick seriously, this is such a fun movie to watch.
5:11
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you know, messy and cringy in all the ways that it's supposed to be.
5:15
[SPEAKER_03]: but for a great music movie, they're not easy to do.
5:20
[SPEAKER_03]: And this one works.
5:22
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it works in all the ways that I was talking with Chandler too, like almost famous and days and all the great movies like that work.
5:30
[SPEAKER_03]: You're sort of portraying this version of her.
5:35
[SPEAKER_03]: How was it pitched to you?
5:36
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, is it pitched to you like this is me or what?
5:40
[SPEAKER_06]: Um, uh, I honestly, when I read the script, I can like, I have like this, um, I, I love, uh, a script that's written by a woman who's writing about her life and making a character.
5:50
[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, it happened with Bob Trevino like said as well.
5:52
[SPEAKER_06]: And so I could tell that the honesty of it was something deeper and clearly was written from personal experience and not like a completely made up character that was out of nowhere and, um, not grounded in reality.
6:03
[SPEAKER_06]: So I could definitely tell when I was reading
6:07
[SPEAKER_06]: I didn't know Chandler the time, I'm like Chandler, whoever this is is writing from personal experience because it's too real, you know, like even the weird sex scenes and the way that she was talking to the men, I'm like, oh my god, these are also incredibly relatable as like a woman in her early 20s, like trying to figure out and navigate like a creative city and like all these kind of asshole dudes and these creative guys that like have no space for like emotional empathy, so I kind of could tell by reading it and then while talking to her, I was like, yeah,
6:32
[SPEAKER_06]: This is like, this is definitely written from personal experience and I find that scripts like that are always like most entertaining to me and the most like honest and really Interesting and we got to really kind of build this character that's very much based on Chandler in 2011 but also You know a character that we built out that's completely different than her for like cinematic reasons obviously and so we wanted to make something a little bit different but I wore
6:56
[SPEAKER_06]: her t-shirts, I got the haircut, I wore like the glasses, you know, it's nice to have someone tethered to reality that I can always bounce ideas off of because it doesn't feel like it's just like ambiguous, like person that has no, that's like ameless or like a character that I'm just trying to make up things for.
7:12
[SPEAKER_06]: It felt like it was always tethered in reality and I love doing that because you get to really like kind of comb through these fine details and make it as real as
7:25
[SPEAKER_03]: So it sounds like it actually does change the job a little bit, like in a different way.
7:32
[SPEAKER_03]: Like as an actor, like it's a different sort of lane, I guess, right?
7:36
[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, and yeah, I've done it twice already, so it's like I feel like I have the way and I've been kind of choosing in both of my produce, too.
7:42
[SPEAKER_06]: So it was like me really like getting to be in the very beginning stages of a woman writing about her life and making it into this independent film that maybe doesn't have an incredibly large budget, but it's just so real and honest, and that we're like prepping it to make sure that it really speaks a truth to it.
8:01
[SPEAKER_06]: So yeah, it's been kind of my lane in the past few years, yeah.
8:05
[SPEAKER_03]: And executive Bruce, I mean, we got to point that out, like at what point did you get involved, you know, to that degree?
8:10
[SPEAKER_06]: Well, I didn't in the beginning.
8:12
[SPEAKER_06]: So I had produced Bob Turing the likes in from the very beginning.
8:15
[SPEAKER_06]: We kind of built it out together.
8:17
[SPEAKER_06]: It was a very small budget movie.
8:18
[SPEAKER_06]: Obviously, and we built it out into this really cool thing.
8:21
[SPEAKER_06]: Obviously, Tracy Layman did most of the work because this is her life story.
8:25
[SPEAKER_06]: She's been developing this for years.
8:27
[SPEAKER_06]: And that kind of came in and helped more of the logistical financing and also creative stuff about actuality when we're there.
8:35
[SPEAKER_06]: And so, when I spoke to Chandler, it's felt like a great next step from my producing, as well, because it was, again, like, a female filmmaker who's making a film about herself in a way, a version of herself and it felt really honest.
8:48
[SPEAKER_06]: And, you know, it was in the beginning stages as well.
8:52
[SPEAKER_06]: And so, I got to really be involved in, like, a little bit of the casting, a little bit of the creative.
8:56
[SPEAKER_06]: Definitely, when I was there, boots down, like, on the ground and Montreal, we were, I was definitely, um, had, like, multiple hats I was wearing.
9:04
[SPEAKER_06]: So if the scene was finished, like we would get to make the scene and make sure everyone's okay.
9:07
[SPEAKER_06]: It's just really fun.
9:09
[SPEAKER_06]: I get to like really learn about filmmaking and kind of the not so glamorous parts about it, which is like more of the logistical things, which is like, yes, like 90% of making a movie is like the whole problem is like, that is what directing a movie is and Chandler had to like make these on the five decisions and producers have to do the same thing.
9:25
[SPEAKER_06]: And so I just I love learning through indie filmmaking because it's high stakes fast.
9:32
[SPEAKER_06]: Look, it's always on location.
9:33
[SPEAKER_06]: It's never like a sound stage.
9:34
[SPEAKER_06]: It's never like cushy.
9:36
[SPEAKER_06]: It's like we've got cameras in the tiny apartment.
9:38
[SPEAKER_06]: There's a hundred people here.
9:39
[SPEAKER_06]: Let's make a work.
9:40
[SPEAKER_06]: And you're shooting in the actual apartments, right?
9:43
[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, yeah.
9:43
[SPEAKER_06]: There was no, there were tiny Montreal apartments.
9:47
[SPEAKER_06]: No AC, just hundred people in there.
9:50
[SPEAKER_06]: Just sweat it out.
9:52
[SPEAKER_03]: That's doing half the work for you at some point.
9:55
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, you know, you say costumes do so much to the work for you.
9:58
[SPEAKER_03]: Just the temperature in those little apartments will do it.
10:01
[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, and well, and that's the best part about in new movies is that, like, you know, I'm actually, I'm actually going up the stairs with the heavy suitcase.
10:08
[SPEAKER_06]: I'm actually, you know, in, I, this is not like all smoking mirrors.
10:12
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm actually doing it and we'll be right back right after this.
10:16
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back, it's Kyle and Meredith with Barbie Ferreira.
10:19
[SPEAKER_03]: I just think we're in, I've said this a lot in the series too.
10:21
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, I think we're now, if we haven't entered it full way, we're in a new golden era of independent film.
10:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, it's coming there.
10:29
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's been a while since I think we've been here, but with, you know, distribution being overcrowded, sure, but being much easier than it used to be.
10:38
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you're seeing this firsthand, but like,
10:41
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'd love to hear from your point of view too, because from my point of view, it did.
10:44
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like, wow, independent film is getting out there again in a big, big way.
10:48
[SPEAKER_06]: I'm betting on indie film.
10:50
[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, the past few years, I bet it on it.
10:52
[SPEAKER_06]: I think for me, it's very obvious that I think doing something on a smaller budget, that's more creatively open as as opposed to something super high budget.
11:03
[SPEAKER_06]: That's a creatively very stunted because it needs to make money has always been, um,
11:08
[SPEAKER_06]: You know, for me, just makes more sense in this time period, people can make content on their own.
11:13
[SPEAKER_06]: The people can shoot a film on their iPhone, shout out Sean Baker, Tandry, and love that movie.
11:18
[SPEAKER_06]: You know, I mean, it's like you can literally make a movie on your iPhone.
11:21
[SPEAKER_06]: And so it's good and bad.
11:24
[SPEAKER_06]: I think this pros and cons to this era where, you know, people are putting $100 million to a movie and no one's going to the box.
11:29
[SPEAKER_06]: Like you know, it's going to the theater and the box office isn't hitting, but the fact that you can make a $5 million movie, which is in the grand scheme of things very small for a budget, but be able to do whatever you want and it and actually have your creative vision fulfilled and we all take, you know, we all do it for the love and for the passion of the project.
11:45
[SPEAKER_06]: I think that is so cool.
11:47
[SPEAKER_06]: And to me, that's what I grew up watching.
11:49
[SPEAKER_06]: I grew up watching a lot of indie movies,
11:53
[SPEAKER_06]: things that maybe weren't the most glossy, Hollywood scene, I grew up watching a lot of European films and like, foreign films that like really showed real people, like, as main actors, and that's what I find exciting.
12:06
[SPEAKER_06]: And so I think a VR, I mean, think about a Nora, like, winning all those things.
12:11
[SPEAKER_06]: It's just, for me, I've been betting on indie film because I see the writing on the walls that, like, the bigger the budget, the more it's going to be saturated.
12:19
[SPEAKER_06]: It's going to be, um,
12:20
[SPEAKER_06]: water down for audiences and that's cool too.
12:22
[SPEAKER_06]: There's a time and place.
12:24
[SPEAKER_06]: My dream in life is to be in a minions movie.
12:25
[SPEAKER_06]: If anyone wants to put me in a minions movie, banana, I can do it, banana, but for me producing and starring in indie films has been just so fun and where I find the most creative fulfillment.
12:40
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, that's all of those things is what I saw in this movie with my link kicks.
12:44
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it is.
12:45
[SPEAKER_03]: It's minus the banana part, but
12:48
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't think I saw any of that there, but it is that, I mean, sure there's the nostalgia part of it too that's baked in there and I don't know, you know, if one direction of Justin Bieber allowed you to have a connection to this scene at the time, but what was your connection to the late Indy Rock, you know, blog rocker of that part of the decade?
13:11
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, was it a cram session for you or were you sort of already knowledgeable?
13:15
[SPEAKER_06]: So what's funny is that I contain multitude.
13:17
[SPEAKER_06]: So yes, I loved one direction.
13:19
[SPEAKER_06]: Just remember, but I also was really into popcorn because well, kind of a little bit less, because I was in 2011, I was 14, 15 years old.
13:28
[SPEAKER_06]: And I started modeling from American Pearls 16.
13:30
[SPEAKER_06]: So I started getting into the indie kind of,
13:32
[SPEAKER_06]: scene towards the very end of it, but very early in my life.
13:36
[SPEAKER_06]: And so I got to see kind of the warped tour, like end of the warped tour, my space age, like in real life.
13:44
[SPEAKER_06]: And I remember like looking at those people and being like they're the coolest for people I've ever seen in my life.
13:47
[SPEAKER_06]: Like literally these scene queens are like the coolest people I'm gonna grow up and be them.
13:51
[SPEAKER_06]: And so for me, my perspective in my life kicks is like this was like what I wish my like teens were.
13:56
[SPEAKER_06]: And like my early 20s instead of kind of
13:59
[SPEAKER_06]: post indie seas where it was like the rise of Instagram, the rise of Twitter, the rise of like social media.
14:05
[SPEAKER_06]: And so I just feel like that was like really what was so exciting about it was just like I get I was really young at the time.
14:11
[SPEAKER_06]: And I did know a lot about like I would go to like I remember going my first show with panic at the disco when they were a full band.
14:18
[SPEAKER_03]: And like I would show.
14:19
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I like for sure.
14:21
[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's a good for show when they were bands at the first album, um, I remember like, I was really into pop punk and then eventually kind of into more like best coes like Mac to Marco and kind of like, you know, all the artsy kids would listen to when I was in Brooklyn, um, I eventually moved to Brooklyn at 18.
14:37
[SPEAKER_06]: So,
14:37
[SPEAKER_06]: it was like very much like on I had to cram a little bit for sure like I wasn't familiar a lot with islands or some of the more Canadian bands but I was familiar with like crimes and mechemarko and all these kind of and tops and whoever you know that was familiar with them so it was really about just kind of re-listening to it and getting back into the vibes and of course they put an icon like a lannus as kind of the central a lannus baby hello which by the way I used to call her alonus because i'm american and god i think that's wrong either
15:05
[SPEAKER_06]: I got to give Canadians like, I got to respect the Canadians.
15:08
[SPEAKER_06]: I have to be as Canadians possible, Atlantis, more set.
15:12
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, see, I'm in Kentucky.
15:13
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm at Louisville.
15:14
[SPEAKER_03]: So I feel like when I do it, it's still the so it's, I'm saying Atlantis, but it feels like it's because I'm so.
15:20
[SPEAKER_03]: Atlantis.
15:21
[SPEAKER_03]: Atlantis.
15:22
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
15:23
[SPEAKER_06]: Also love Louisville, I shop October Vina there.
15:25
[SPEAKER_06]: I was there for two months, so fun.
15:26
[SPEAKER_03]: It's happening here right now.
15:28
[SPEAKER_03]: We got the tax break, it's big and Kentucky, or it will bad, I don't know.
15:33
[SPEAKER_06]: Two months of Kentucky, I loved it.
15:35
[SPEAKER_06]: I don't know the suburbs outside of it.
15:36
[SPEAKER_06]: I was like, live in my dream.
15:38
[SPEAKER_03]: What time of year?
15:39
[SPEAKER_03]: Summer.
15:40
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, sorry about that, part.
15:43
[SPEAKER_06]: Another indie with no A.C. in the trailer.
15:45
[SPEAKER_06]: You know?
15:48
[SPEAKER_03]: Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
16:04
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, my job's like, did, when I was like 16, I did, I was 17 or 18, but yeah, you know, it's like, you know, you've had multiple now music, you know, things on it.
16:14
[SPEAKER_03]: The music video thing, how different is that job?
16:17
[SPEAKER_03]: I know it's smaller, shorter.
16:19
[SPEAKER_06]: For me, I just always,
16:21
[SPEAKER_06]: Going up in New York and like I did so many odd jobs that like one cannot even think like and they were all very fun like it wasn't like you know I was like it was like I would model for like John Kern who's like a Huge artist I had no idea who he was like I'm just my friend for all artists So they would just put me on to little things all the time so I all the music It is just like a friend asked me to be at it.
16:44
[SPEAKER_06]: I'm like sure
16:45
[SPEAKER_06]: And I've been in a couple of music videos since and they haven't come out and that's okay, but like I'm like that's always the fun as part is when I get to like be in a music video Someone that I really enjoy But yeah, Carlyard Jefferson really found my friend Petra Collins who's photos behind me We were shooting a lot at the time when I was a teenager.
17:01
[SPEAKER_06]: We like did so much stuff for like art basil and like Like we just were and mag is she's a incredible artist and so she was like oh like would you be in this music video?
17:15
[SPEAKER_03]: That's fun.
17:16
[SPEAKER_03]: That's fun.
17:16
[SPEAKER_03]: And you know, Karlie Rejepton, she's great too.
17:19
[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, well, they found runs.
17:21
[SPEAKER_03]: Love talk with her.
17:23
[SPEAKER_03]: What I'll tie back into my line kicks and faces of death again, and just right at the end here because being a part of that, I'll just ask was there a decision-making process on your ends just considering the history of what that movie has meant to people.
17:39
[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, I mean, what I really loved about piece of death was like the social commentary in the movie was really smart and fun at the same time.
17:45
[SPEAKER_06]: It wasn't like PSA or over raw.
17:48
[SPEAKER_06]: It was just like about our consumption of violence on the internet and how it's only increased.
17:53
[SPEAKER_06]: And even since we shot it, it has only gotten worse where we see real life violence pushed into our algorithm.
17:59
[SPEAKER_06]: True the everyday, it doesn't matter if you're 12 years old or 80, like you will see someone probably die in a video.
18:06
[SPEAKER_06]: And no matter what, even if you aren't seeking it out, you're not looking for it.
18:10
[SPEAKER_06]: And so for me, that really affected me because the amount of times I've seen something that maybe the human psyche shouldn't have seen as a young person growing up on the internet.
18:18
[SPEAKER_06]: And what the effect is and what can we do about it.
18:21
[SPEAKER_06]: So it really poses a question of like, how do we deal with society pushing out so much violence in the algorithm and also censorship of anything else, but pushing out the violence because it makes so much money.
18:32
[SPEAKER_06]: So for me, it was always, and it's only gotten more relevant.
18:36
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, and now everybody gets to, you know, see them both this weekend back to back.
18:42
[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, the Barbie Malface.
18:43
[SPEAKER_03]: That's it.
18:44
[SPEAKER_03]: That's it.
18:45
[SPEAKER_03]: We'll be doing it too.
18:45
[SPEAKER_03]: So seriously, congratulations on this set.
18:47
[SPEAKER_03]: It's so fun to watch you in all of this.
18:49
[SPEAKER_03]: And my link kicks is so fun.
18:52
[SPEAKER_03]: And I said to Chandler too, but I know this is going to be one of those movies I see multiple times.
18:56
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, thank you.
18:57
[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
18:57
[SPEAKER_03]: So he's a fun one.
18:59
[SPEAKER_03]: Nice talking to you.
19:00
[SPEAKER_05]: Thank you.
19:01
[SPEAKER_03]: And we'll be right back right to this.
19:04
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back, it's Kyle Meredith, and now we're going to turn it to a Devon Bostick, Devon you know from the Diary of the Wimpy Kid series, played the older brother.
19:14
[SPEAKER_03]: He was an Oppenheimer, he's done a lot.
19:17
[SPEAKER_03]: Devon comes into this as one of the love interests, and also the guitarist of this fictional band in the movie called Bone Patrol, despite not actually playing guitar before he got the role.
19:29
[SPEAKER_03]: Like Devon's going to get into the crash course of band rehearsals and working alongside real musicians and finding a character that really felt close to himself while also reflecting on the film's intentionally messy early 20s energy where no one quite has it together.
19:45
[SPEAKER_03]: Let's get into this part too as we're talking mildly and kicks, it's Kyle Meredith with Devembostic.
19:52
[SPEAKER_03]: uh... hey man it's uh... it's nice to meet you congratulate you on uh... on myelin kicks i mean this is a really it's a good movie and it's a fun movie but it's also a movie i think i'm gonna end up watching like multiple times i mean oh that's great array i mean we love a rewatch we love a rewatch what's the story of how you end up in this movie so you play a guitarist in in the bayon bone patrol you're not a guitarist going into it correct correct if this one of those stories where they say can you write a horse and you say yes
20:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, no, I, you know, I was going to say I learned not to do that a while ago, but I don't know that that's true.
20:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, no, it was just, um, you know, one of those, are you right for this?
20:34
[SPEAKER_01]: acting wise and then, and then, hey, can you write a horse in the matter of a few weeks, you know, and and turns out we'd, we'd maybe, I guess we'll see.
20:45
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you got on the horse, the horse wins.
20:48
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it wins somewhere.
20:49
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I wouldn't write into the woods.
20:51
[SPEAKER_03]: No, I mean, is that a little scary going into this going, you know, you know how to act.
20:54
[SPEAKER_03]: You have the tools for that, but you know, you have to learn this thing to bring in.
20:58
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, what's that stress level?
20:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I, you know, I operate on such a level 10 of stress no matter what.
21:04
[SPEAKER_01]: So it just kind of, it just folds right into my daily life.
21:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Man, did you pick a great career?
21:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
21:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
21:10
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a, it's a fear always, you know, that you don't want to like embarrass yourself or the film.
21:16
[SPEAKER_01]: probably more so the felt like you want to do right by the story you're telling.
21:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so, so leading with that, I think I probably the most amount of work was into the guitar because I don't know how to do that.
21:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And then on the acting front, I was like, oh yeah, I was alive at this time.
21:30
[SPEAKER_01]: I was just as high as this guy at this time.
21:32
[SPEAKER_01]: This should be easy.
21:34
[SPEAKER_03]: That's your first scene, too.
21:35
[SPEAKER_01]: The very first scene we see you in, right?
21:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you're smoking.
21:38
[SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about weed and social anxiety.
21:40
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I was like, what more, what work do I need to do?
21:43
[SPEAKER_03]: So that's it.
21:44
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, how much of this guy was already there?
21:46
[SPEAKER_03]: Because, you know, talking in Chandler, of course, like so much of Barbie's character is based on her.
21:51
[SPEAKER_03]: But like, these other people are, you know, does she talk to you about that?
21:54
[SPEAKER_03]: Where they rooted in real people, does she spell it out for you?
21:56
[SPEAKER_03]: Do you kind of find your way within the scrims?
21:59
[SPEAKER_03]: It's interesting, because it's like, yep,
22:00
[SPEAKER_01]: there are different people that she's based off of whether loosely or more accurately based off of the people she's met during that time.
22:08
[SPEAKER_01]: I did meet with someone that was sort of my character was loosely based off.
22:14
[SPEAKER_01]: By this point though as well, you want to honor the memory while also
22:21
[SPEAKER_01]: doing your truth of what you believe this thing is.
22:23
[SPEAKER_01]: And then also I think when you're like with good casting, which Chandler is really good at, and the film really accomplished, was you're going from character or actors who slot into the roles in an effortless way versus you know, like trying to wedge something in.
22:39
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think a lot of it was actually just trying to play myself as truthfully as possible as well, because that's kind of who this guy is.
22:46
[SPEAKER_01]: It's sort of just, you know,
22:48
[SPEAKER_01]: He's not posturing it anyway.
22:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's a nice thing, right?
22:51
[SPEAKER_03]: Like none of her choices are perfect.
22:54
[SPEAKER_03]: She's not perfect.
22:55
[SPEAKER_03]: Like everybody's messy, you know?
22:57
[SPEAKER_03]: You're playing parts in your ear, what, early 20s when you're just trying to, to try to be a human out in the world.
23:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you're like, does this sweater fit me right?
23:06
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, this is who I am.
23:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Who am I again?
23:09
[SPEAKER_01]: But you also get to be the duckie of the movie, I guess.
23:12
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
23:14
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
23:15
[SPEAKER_03]: You're right.
23:16
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
23:17
[SPEAKER_03]: And to be fair, that wasn't a question either.
23:19
[SPEAKER_03]: There was a question like that.
23:22
[SPEAKER_03]: But I don't know what I guess what I am getting to is what you saw in that movie like because it is.
23:28
[SPEAKER_03]: It's not that it's just based on someone real, like everything in this feels real in a way you don't get with a lot of movies.
23:34
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's, I guess it's more of a first reactions kind of question that I'm throwing your way.
23:39
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I watched um, I like movies before I met on this, or when I was like told about it all, and I was like, okay, I should watch a channel this first film before we, you know, zoom and stuff.
23:51
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was such a beautiful film and maybe cry.
23:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Isaiah is incredible in it, and she just,
23:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Chandler has this great ability to write something that's so specific that ends up being universal through his specificity, and I really felt for the first time, not for the first time, before, like, in a rare way that she captured the Canadian experience, and especially like a
24:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And so this sort of felt the same in that like when I read it, I was like, it just feels like a memory.
24:24
[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't feel like it's like, it's a poem.
24:26
[SPEAKER_01]: It's an ode too, but it's also such a fond memory of that time.
24:31
[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, like looking back on your life, you are able to romanticize all of the ugly things that happened at that time.
24:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And so that was really special.
24:39
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's just an earnestness, a messiness, and a really lovely quality about the writing that
24:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty easy like I had to do this.
24:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right.
24:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, did you did you have connections to that music scene around that time not like to the like a steaming level of of the bands that are you know The revered ones in the film, but but like I had tons of friends who are it was so so talented and I are doing music now still
25:08
[SPEAKER_01]: And they went from Toronto to Montreal, so it was very easy to be like, oh, yeah, I remember this this time or I visit people like Concordia like during like little breaks and whatnot.
25:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I did have a friend reach out and he's like, did you know that you were making a movie about my life?
25:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, yeah.
25:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's all dead.
25:27
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
25:29
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't even know if that's like, it's important because on some aspects, you know, maybe you want to cram, maybe you're the type of person that needs that, like, well, I need to know all of this, you know, these bands where everything, like, like, where do you fall on that?
25:41
[SPEAKER_03]: Did you go back, you're like, I need to know who islands are?
25:45
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like you don't want to have seen islands play in a lot,
25:49
[SPEAKER_01]: the main area of a person's house before.
25:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, so I, I meant cool.
25:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was, it was honestly amazing.
25:56
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that was around like, 2011.
26:00
[SPEAKER_01]: So there wasn't like a whole lot of, there was cramming like I watched it at Doc, that took place in the, on the island, it ridden the island at that time and like following all of these different artists.
26:13
[SPEAKER_01]: So there was like research on that level.
26:15
[SPEAKER_01]: I think the main thing was actually just being like,
26:20
[SPEAKER_03]: Did you have to audition on a song like because we have A.S.L.
26:23
[SPEAKER_03]: in the in the in the movie?
26:26
[SPEAKER_03]: Did I have to audition the song like audition on a song?
26:28
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, no, no.
26:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, we so I did like a chemistry read with Barbie.
26:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, though it was just like a couple scenes and then found out I was the only one.
26:38
[SPEAKER_01]: taping for it.
26:40
[SPEAKER_01]: In that moment I was like, I was really like, I was like, I really need to want to do this movie.
26:46
[SPEAKER_01]: And then it was a really positive call with Chandler and then zoom with Barbie.
26:53
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think it was mostly about the chemistry there and the acting and then
26:57
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the music came later and we did a lot of like extra curricular music stuff Awesome in bone patrol, you know, band practice with yeah with bone control.
27:07
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah We did a lot of stuff before hand with tops and then Devin from half moon run and
27:14
[SPEAKER_01]: a lot of like personal practices, band practices, and then once the movie started, and we were all up and running on weekends, we'd get together and, you know, like rent out of space.
27:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Which was great, because you're in Montreal, obviously things are a little more expensive now, but it was still kind of like, oh, we can rent this space, and it's still affordable enough to, you know,
27:32
[SPEAKER_01]: to warrant that on an indie film, you know, on an indie film.
27:35
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's, you know, and they're talking with Barbie about that, too, but like it's so impressive, like, indie's in a moment right now.
27:40
[SPEAKER_03]: We're having an indie film moment that I'm absolutely like eating up and loving.
27:45
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a lot of my favorite stuff.
27:46
[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't know if that's
27:48
[SPEAKER_03]: you know, changing your job on the side of years like how much you're noticing that.
27:53
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, yeah.
27:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Extremely, yeah.
27:57
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, it's, it's, it's so incredible that we're right.
28:00
[SPEAKER_01]: There's, you know, another.
28:03
[SPEAKER_01]: that film is still alive in some capacity.
28:07
[SPEAKER_01]: In any capacity, it's exciting that people are able to work in a space that is then like a little bit more grunge or a little bit more DIY.
28:16
[SPEAKER_01]: And then also just like taking huge risks by making films without knowing where it's gonna go.
28:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Which allows for an incredible creative experience.
28:27
[SPEAKER_01]: I've noticed it in all facets though, in that you're like, yeah, if it's,
28:30
[SPEAKER_01]: It's exciting and then it's also like you look to all of the other elements of the industry go, you guys, okay, right.
28:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
28:38
[SPEAKER_03]: You used to be, yeah, because, you know, you're taking any film to keep a job, you know, just to just to feel the time.
28:43
[SPEAKER_03]: But now you can take the indie film and it be like so substantial again, you know, and find its way and find its path out there.
28:50
[SPEAKER_01]: It feels like the 70s or something, not that I was around then, but I imagine the feeling was like, and I just to say, like, you know, like, that all of these new independent distributors are popping up right now is also so exciting.
29:02
[SPEAKER_01]: It also feels very like rock and roll, you know, a Samarion picture is buying this and what they've been doing for the release is,
29:08
[SPEAKER_01]: is bigger than I've seen for some movies that I've done that are like, you know, studio films.
29:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
29:13
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's really, it's an exciting kind of wild west time.
29:18
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
29:18
[SPEAKER_03]: What's fun to see in everything else that you're doing out there too, congratulations on this, so man, I so much enjoy this movie and a lot of fun getting to talk to you.
29:25
[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
29:26
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
29:26
[SPEAKER_03]: Thanks for having me.
29:27
[SPEAKER_03]: And we'll be right back right after this.
29:29
[SPEAKER_03]: Welcome back, it's Kyle Meredith.
29:31
[SPEAKER_03]: All right, for part three of this run on myelin kicks, we're going to be talking with writer, director, and the source material inspiration for this entire movie, Chandler LeVak.
29:43
[SPEAKER_03]: She's going to talk about transforming her real life days as a young spin music critic into making this movie.
29:49
[SPEAKER_03]: digging into that indie scene of 2011 in Montreal and the meld dominated world that she had navigated.
29:55
[SPEAKER_03]: Why it took nearly a decade to shape the story into something deeper than a rom-com, which is sort of why where she started out.
30:02
[SPEAKER_03]: But also, as she'll tell you, took a lot of inspiration from almost famous days to confuse.
30:08
[SPEAKER_03]: And we'll talk about making jagged little pill, the illness more as it album, the center point.
30:14
[SPEAKER_03]: of the entire movie.
30:16
[SPEAKER_03]: So let's do this part three talking about my lane kicks.
30:19
[SPEAKER_03]: It's Kyle Meredith with Chandler the VAC.
30:21
[SPEAKER_07]: Hey, nice to meet you, has it going.
30:23
[SPEAKER_03]: Congrats on another movie out there, my only cake.
30:27
[SPEAKER_03]: Did the impossible.
30:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, thank you.
30:29
[SPEAKER_03]: You're birthed the movie into the world.
30:31
[SPEAKER_03]: So I had so much fun watching it.
30:34
[SPEAKER_03]: I really did.
30:35
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, it hits all the things, right?
30:37
[SPEAKER_03]: I know it's not easy to make a rock movie, a music movie.
30:40
[SPEAKER_03]: But basing it on your life and this time in your life, that's the obvious place to start, right?
30:45
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, what was it about this part of your life that you thought, oh, I've got a story here, this can work.
30:51
[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I mean, I think when I first started writing it, you know, it took me about a decade to make this movie.
30:57
[SPEAKER_07]: So I first started writing this first draft in 2015 when I was 27 and I'm now 39.
31:03
[SPEAKER_07]: So, you know, I was only like a few years removed from some of the experiences that really informed the film.
31:13
[SPEAKER_07]: And yeah, I think it first started with me wanting to write like a rom-com which was like a genre of film that I've always been obsessed with.
31:21
[SPEAKER_07]: And I think in some ways remake my favorite movie ball time, which is almost famous.
31:26
[SPEAKER_03]: It's the greatest movie ball time, right?
31:29
[SPEAKER_07]: Thank you.
31:29
[SPEAKER_07]: And then as I kept going, I think it sort of unlocked these things that I think I've been deeply repressing, you know, these like experiences as a young female music critic working in these very male dominated spaces.
31:43
[SPEAKER_07]: And I think it was like sort of a coping mechanism to sort of write the film and just it just got deeper and deeper.
31:49
[SPEAKER_07]: Great.
31:50
[SPEAKER_03]: before I get into that because you brought up I have to ask with almost famous do you do the director's cut or the theatrical cut because I can only watch the director's cut at this point I'm ruined.
32:00
[SPEAKER_07]: I know well you know we actually can't respect to Cameron Crow.
32:02
[SPEAKER_07]: There's a lot of really great scenes in the director's cut that I love like when they when they when they
32:07
[SPEAKER_07]: They have his like cake for Penny Lane.
32:09
[SPEAKER_07]: It's her birthday.
32:10
[SPEAKER_07]: It's right before she finds out that she was sold by a for a case of beer by humble pie and that that seems to me is really really pointing it in the end.
32:19
[SPEAKER_03]: It planes a lot that you don't get just in that little scene.
32:22
[SPEAKER_03]: I agree on it.
32:23
[SPEAKER_03]: But back to yours.
32:26
[SPEAKER_03]: But you do you you've got these templates out there and you are telling this
32:30
[SPEAKER_03]: As you said, this really personal story, I mean, music criticism, yeah, it's it's been a dude's thing and it's it's sort of has it disappeared right now?
32:39
[SPEAKER_03]: I was kind of looking around like do we have because we don't have music critics in the way that we used to exactly.
32:46
[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I think when I was, you know, doing it, there was this almost like called a personality thing where you had critics that were very monolithic, you know, I wrote for spin.
32:56
[SPEAKER_07]: So it was like writers like Chuck Klosterman and Phoebe Riley and Andy Greenwald
33:04
[SPEAKER_07]: Sean Fantasy that were really like incredible writers and then also yeah, I mean, I think for me like having always idolized rock critics And kind of then going back like I love Rob Chef field.
33:19
[SPEAKER_07]: I love his book and love his mix tape so much
33:22
[SPEAKER_07]: Um, but yeah, there's there's not a lot of female rock writers like kind of in the the Pantheon of it and so you know, it just felt like it was very led by like men's tastes and I guess interviewing like a rock star when your woman is a very different experience than when you're like a guy, but it does seem just like when I look out there now looking back at this movie especially.
33:43
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, things change, you know, slowly, I guess is what I'm saying.
33:49
[SPEAKER_03]: So it takes a movie like this to go back and like, oh, wow.
33:51
[SPEAKER_03]: We've, it's kind of lost in the way, but, you know, I mean, a lot of the websites are going a lot of the magazines are going, you know, it's that sort of thing.
33:58
[SPEAKER_07]: The whole institution is completely eroded.
34:01
[SPEAKER_07]: When I started my career as a rock critic, the music section of the old weekly was like 15 pages long.
34:08
[SPEAKER_07]: And there is like four pages of just reviewing CDs.
34:11
[SPEAKER_07]: And now the idea that you would need someone to tell you if a CD is good or not before you buy it, feels like crazy because you just have access to everything.
34:18
[SPEAKER_07]: And people don't need that same kind of taste-making anymore.
34:22
[SPEAKER_07]: And you don't have institutions also like pitchfork that are really like breaking a band.
34:26
[SPEAKER_07]: It feels like,
34:27
[SPEAKER_07]: almost the bands that are going to break out are kind of like pre-selected or something like a, you know, it's just like, I woke up one morning and suddenly geese was like the biggest band in the world and I was like, who are they?
34:39
[SPEAKER_07]: How do we decide this?
34:40
[SPEAKER_03]: Where do they go?
34:41
[SPEAKER_03]: Who decided this, right?
34:43
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
34:44
[SPEAKER_03]: So you did, as you said though, you slept, you know, not slept on it.
34:47
[SPEAKER_03]: You were working on the script for 10 years.
34:49
[SPEAKER_03]: Like so,
34:51
[SPEAKER_03]: does your perspective change when you finally get to make the movie from from where that started?
34:57
[SPEAKER_03]: Is that something that you that you noticed?
34:59
[SPEAKER_07]: I mean, I hope so.
35:00
[SPEAKER_07]: I think the character got a lot more nuanced.
35:04
[SPEAKER_07]: I think her.
35:05
[SPEAKER_07]: She became less of just a victim where things would happen to her and she became more complacent in them.
35:11
[SPEAKER_07]: And she became a little bit more complicated and had a lot more agency, but for all of the wrong things.
35:20
[SPEAKER_07]: And I think that was a really important thing.
35:23
[SPEAKER_07]: I remember when I was first,
35:24
[SPEAKER_07]: like working with my story editor and she was like oh like you your characters are passive and like you know she doesn't have you everyone else has like the funny lines and things that are happening to them and like she just kind of is like sitting there passively you know and it was almost like
35:40
[SPEAKER_07]: My own internal misogyny or something was like making the character that was based on me like less Complex or something and then as they kept writing it.
35:50
[SPEAKER_07]: I was like, oh, no, this is such a better story If she's like the most messiest and like kind of like anti hero and in the film, you know Because everybody you know, I mean know what nobody's perfect.
36:02
[SPEAKER_07]: No, no
36:03
[SPEAKER_07]: But you're losing their 20s.
36:05
[SPEAKER_03]: Come on.
36:06
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's it.
36:07
[SPEAKER_03]: Like this is the time in your life where you're trying to launch.
36:12
[SPEAKER_03]: And it is a mess.
36:12
[SPEAKER_03]: Like when you're writing this version of yourself and maybe you're already saying that, what you were just saying there, but like how much do you allow of yourself?
36:22
[SPEAKER_03]: How messy do you let it get?
36:25
[SPEAKER_07]: I mean, I really wanted to go full tilt.
36:27
[SPEAKER_07]: I was like begging the production designers, like let's get like a half-eaten routine on the bed and like let's make sure that there's enough as money, like rips in her stockings as possible.
36:37
[SPEAKER_07]: I remember that scene where Barbie is like weeping on the ground, you know, after she finds out her book deals gone.
36:44
[SPEAKER_07]: I was like maybe you're like a really ugly cryer.
36:48
[SPEAKER_07]: Like maybe you like don't cry.
36:50
[SPEAKER_07]: Maybe you're like,
36:52
[SPEAKER_07]: And she did it so perfectly, but it was just fun to kind of lean into, like, almost like this grotesque portrait of like what it really is to be like a 24-year-old woman.
37:04
[SPEAKER_07]: Like, I remember joking, I'm like, this is a character that's like worse than Hannibal Lecter.
37:09
[SPEAKER_07]: Like, you have to go for it.
37:12
[SPEAKER_03]: And somebody wants her, somebody still wants to be with her.
37:15
[SPEAKER_07]: Of course, why, I hope so.
37:17
[SPEAKER_07]: I hope so,
37:20
[SPEAKER_03]: And then a Lannus plays a very central part of that all.
37:24
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, there's the line in it.
37:25
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, or society hates it when women talk about themselves.
37:28
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, as Barbie's character is pitching this 33-and-third book about jagged little pill.
37:36
[SPEAKER_03]: Is that, does that line up with your own story?
37:38
[SPEAKER_03]: Was it a Lannus for you?
37:40
[SPEAKER_07]: Yes.
37:40
[SPEAKER_07]: I mean, that was the album.
37:42
[SPEAKER_07]: I think it made me realize that I love music.
37:44
[SPEAKER_07]: Like, I heard it for the first time when I was eight years old.
37:46
[SPEAKER_07]: Someone told me about it on the school yard.
37:49
[SPEAKER_07]: They were like there's this record.
37:50
[SPEAKER_07]: It's by this like Canadian woman.
37:52
[SPEAKER_07]: She's where she's talking about sex and I was like I got I got to find out what this is all you need to know
37:58
[SPEAKER_07]: And I begged my mom to buy it, and then she put the cassette on in our inner mini van, and my three-year-old sibling was in the backseat, and then you ought to know it comes on.
38:08
[SPEAKER_07]: And I just was like, what is this song?
38:11
[SPEAKER_07]: Like, it just felt like some kind of prophecy from the future.
38:15
[SPEAKER_07]: Like, I was like, I'm going to go home.
38:16
[SPEAKER_07]: I'm going to listen to this like a thousand times in a row.
38:18
[SPEAKER_07]: Like, I had just had to know that like, but like a sound was like what adulthood was going to be?
38:24
[SPEAKER_03]: my wife and I laugh about this.
38:26
[SPEAKER_03]: We on one of the anniversary tours that just happened of jagged, which I think she did for like three or four years.
38:31
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
38:31
[SPEAKER_03]: So we were in Cincinnati and it was a Lannison garbage.
38:37
[SPEAKER_03]: Awesome.
38:38
[SPEAKER_03]: And they got to you want to know.
38:40
[SPEAKER_03]: And there's scratch my nails down.
38:41
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, you're back.
38:42
[SPEAKER_03]: Hope you feel it.
38:43
[SPEAKER_03]: There was a group I didn't.
38:44
[SPEAKER_03]: I never said hi to her.
38:45
[SPEAKER_03]: Suddenly I felt her nails go so much into my back.
38:49
[SPEAKER_03]: And my wife said, that had nothing to do with you.
38:52
[SPEAKER_03]: That had absolutely nothing to do with you.
38:55
[SPEAKER_03]: That's that song.
38:58
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
38:59
[SPEAKER_03]: That's true.
39:00
[SPEAKER_07]: Especially it wasn't.
39:01
[SPEAKER_07]: Primal.
39:02
[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
39:03
[SPEAKER_03]: But you got, you even got it licensed.
39:05
[SPEAKER_03]: Like you got some tracks license from the latest.
39:07
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm so impressed at the music in this movie, considering it's an indie film.
39:11
[SPEAKER_03]: Like how difficult was that journey?
39:13
[SPEAKER_07]: It was, it was Helen Beck, I mean, I, I mean, a lot of those songs were written into the script and for me are so, you know, personal and
39:23
[SPEAKER_07]: Considering I've been making this movie for 10 years, like in my head, you know, I was like, I can't like let this song go, like I can't swap it with something else, like it's too important to me.
39:34
[SPEAKER_07]: And so I worked with an really incredible music supervisor having to been ski.
39:38
[SPEAKER_07]: You also co-produced my first feature, I like movies.
39:41
[SPEAKER_07]: And he just was like, he just fought for me and fought for the film.
39:45
[SPEAKER_07]: And you know, we would write personal letters to RS,
39:51
[SPEAKER_07]: Dear Hunter and I wrote a latest letter and she gave us two of her songs for a rate that's completely unheard of.
40:00
[SPEAKER_07]: You know, I think I just really lucky because this film is like, you know, I needed it to be kind of like a mixed save and then we also had this like incredible literal angel investor Brian Elkerton who came in at the last second and helped support the music budget because yeah, I just don't think the movie works if it doesn't have not only songs that are kind of personal, but like songs that really feel like they reflect the era to me.
40:28
[SPEAKER_07]: Totally.
40:29
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean those yeah those are the kind of movies you know I wanted to kind of model this film on like whether it's like singles or days where it's kind of like yeah I wanted it to be this kind of snapshot of like 2011 music scene and you had to have like original music in here too I mean we get the band and then ASL the age sex location perfect they did I did I did I hear that that song did exist or was that written for the movie?
40:56
[SPEAKER_07]: That was written for the movie with this incredible band from Montreal called Topps, and they're nominated for Best Original Song at the Canine Screen Awards, which is like the Canadian Oscars.
41:07
[SPEAKER_07]: So I'm very proud of that because they'd never written this song for a movie before.
41:10
[SPEAKER_07]: And then, I slept in my jeans, yeah, they were that one too.
41:16
[SPEAKER_07]: But the song that Stanley performs on the roof, Korean supermarket, that's his own original song.
41:22
[SPEAKER_07]: So when he auditioned for the movie, I was like, do you have anything of you playing guitar?
41:26
[SPEAKER_07]: And he sent me a video of him performing that song and I was like, oh my god.
41:31
[SPEAKER_03]: That's the one it goes in.
41:32
[SPEAKER_03]: But it's so, you know, to have the song, that's going to be in the movie.
41:36
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, like, do you give them direction?
41:38
[SPEAKER_03]: Or you just give them the script and say what it is?
41:40
[SPEAKER_03]: And you hope for the best?
41:41
[SPEAKER_07]: We kind of collaborated on it together like for ASL, um, you know, I knew I wanted it to be called that and then I made a playlist of like different kinds of bands that I thought kind of evoked the sound of bone patrol like.
41:57
[SPEAKER_07]: a lot of pavement and archers of loaf and built a spill and I would kind of be like, okay, I really love the way that the chorus breaks in like rattled by the rush, but like web and front feels like the best like litness of like pacing and when the guitars will come in and you know you just kind of like build these elements that you know are kind of cinematic like you're like okay I want you know there needs to be like some kind of
42:22
[SPEAKER_07]: Archie Chevy like interplay so they share like a vocals on this part of the song and then you kind of build backwards But my favorite thing in the world is to build make invent like fictional bands It's so fun and I mean having interviewed so many musicians over the years like I feel like the dynamics of a band they're kind of like a family, you know There's always someone who's like the mom of the band and the dad of the band and like
42:49
[SPEAKER_07]: the black sheep like younger brother and then the middle child that's like fighting for attention and you know it's it's very fascinating and plex the way that like a band can kind of be like a family.
42:59
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah well the song really did feel very much like it's one of those things like I believed it came from.
43:05
[SPEAKER_03]: you know, the late blog era.
43:07
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, thank you.
43:08
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it sounded nice.
43:10
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, so I'll wrap up with this, too.
43:12
[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, you come off.
43:13
[SPEAKER_03]: I like movies.
43:14
[SPEAKER_03]: Now you've got the music film, like what, what comes next?
43:17
[SPEAKER_03]: Like what do you do you tackle after this?
43:20
[SPEAKER_07]: I know that's what people keep saying.
43:21
[SPEAKER_07]: They're like, okay, what does he mean?
43:22
[SPEAKER_07]: Like, I love interpretive theater.
43:25
[SPEAKER_07]: I love archery ear.
43:27
[SPEAKER_07]: Um, I don't know.
43:29
[SPEAKER_07]: I think, you know, I feel like every movie I make is like me trying to remake another movie that I'm obsessed with.
43:35
[SPEAKER_07]: So I like movies that are sort of me doing, um, Ladyburn.
43:39
[SPEAKER_07]: This is obviously almost famous, or maybe singles.
43:43
[SPEAKER_07]: And then I feel like my next film I want to make is sort of really inspired by, um, Tony Erdman, like the Marinette of film, which is one of my favorite movies of all time.
43:51
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
43:51
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I came way to you, create that one into existence as well.
43:54
[SPEAKER_07]: Oh, that's so sweet, Kyle, thank you so much.
43:56
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, thank you so much.
43:57
[SPEAKER_03]: And for doing this, I mean, the movie is so good.
44:00
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm one of those, I'm sure I will watch multiple times, and it's so great to talk about it.
44:05
[SPEAKER_07]: That's really kind, and you're such a lovely person, and thanks for the great questions.
