Episode 522: Admissions Director Q&A with Brent Nagamine of Washington Foster · Clear Admit MBA Admissions Podcast

• 0:16
Speaker A: Welcome to the Clear Admit MBA admissions podcast. I'm your host, Graham Richmond, and this episode is part of our Admissions Director Q and A series. Today. I'm delighted to welcome Brent the Nagamine, the Director of Admissions at the University of Washington Foster School of Business. Brent oversees marketing, recruitment, selection and scholarship for the full time evening and global MBA programs at Foster. He's been working in the higher education sphere since 2013 when he graduated from University of Washington. He started his career working in undergraduate admissions and eventually pursued his Master's in education from the University of Pennsylvania. After joining the Foster MBA admissions team in 2019, he was. He was also drawn to pursue his own MBA, which he completed in June of 2024. Welcome to the Clear Admit podcast, Brian. It's great to have you.
• 1:06
Speaker B: Yeah, Graham, thanks so much for having me. I'm really excited to be here and thanks for the detailed intro.
• 1:11
Speaker A: Yeah, no, and we'll get into a little bit more your background, but I have to say, you know, you and I have a kind of connection that I always cherish, which is that you worked, I mentioned in undergraduate admissions, but I didn't say where. But it was Swarthmore College.
• 1:23
  Speaker B: Oh, yeah.
• 1:24
Speaker A: Where I went to undergrad. So I just love that there's that connection. And I always love talking to you about, about Swarthmore, but today we're going about business school and, you know, University of Washington and Foster. And I know you have a ton to say on that, but I wanted to just first give you a chance to talk a little bit about your background and the path that led you to this current role because it's been a kind of great journey in higher ed and I'd love for our listeners to hear a little bit more about it.
• 1:47
Speaker B: Yeah, absolutely. Graham, you know, I mentioned you have a pretty detailed intro and profile for me, but I do like to talk a little bit about some of the why. And you mentioned I started out with undergrad admission. I loved that space and I loved working with high school students. But ultimately, during my master's program, I came to this realization that I think that at least within the US Economy right now, a graduate level degree is what provides that promise of socioeconomic mobility. And so post my own graduate degree, I was really interested in moving into the admissions space at the graduate level. The challenge with graduate admissions is that graduate programs are so much more niche, except for, in my opinion, the mba, which I argue is really ubiquitous. We are attracting students from across industries, across job functions. They're getting really great education and experiences in our programs and then graduating into leadership roles across a similarly diverse range of functions and industries. So for me, I was drawn to that step up into graduate admissions, but in a place that I thought was still really, really applicable to just almost everyone, regardless of their backgrounds.
• 2:57
Speaker A: Yeah, that makes a ton of sense. Yeah, that's kind of what I personally love about working in this space. I mean, just the diversity of people coming in and also the things they do afterwards. Right. I mean, people go and do all kinds of stuff with an mba. But I interrupted you, so continue. I want to hear more about your journey.
• 3:12
Speaker B: No, well, I was just going to say that I loved what Foster represented. And the other part about my own journey is that I didn't just stop with the master's in Ed. I did ultimately pursue my own mba. And I think that's one of the things that I really loved. I always like to make the joke that I did work at the Foster School on the admissions team when I joined the Foster MBA program. No, I was not allowed to admit myself. I did have to actually apply, but I loved it. And I'm always able to just look back and say a lot of the things that I thought I was going to get out of this, in terms of the applicability of the skills, the education, the experiences that I thought would translate even into an industry like ed. I'm just really happy to say that I found that to be true. And I've still been able to get value out of this experience, even though I'm not in investment banking or consulting or anything like that. So I'm happy to always talk about it from both perspectives on the admissions side. And as an alum.
• 4:07
Speaker A: Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, too. And now I'm totally picturing you. The committee is meeting to talk about the applicants, and you're kind of lingering, hoping they're going to give you. Your colleagues are going to give you the good news. But that's fantastic that you were able to go through the program and you did it while. While working. So, yeah, that's. That's a lot, but it sounds like it was really worthwhile. And yeah, I love the mba. It's so applicable, as we just said, across a number of disciplines, including ed and ed tech and any number of industries. So I guess I do have to ask you, like, what initially drew you? You know, you graduated from University of Washington as an undergrad and you go to work in admissions, but what. What drew you to that work and what sort of keeps you excited about it today?
• 4:49
Speaker B: Yeah, I remember it was during undergrad that I became a tour guide for the university, and that was facilitated by the Office of Admissions. But that was always my favorite part of the week, is when I got to go give tours and talk to prospective students. It's actually funny. When I was an undergraduate student here, I took some of the business prerequisite classes. And Frank Hodge, who's now the dean of the business school, was my accounting professor. And he actually let me leave class early on. It was like Wednesdays or something so that I could go give campus tours. And it's because of that affiliation with the admissions office that I ultimately stepped into my career now. And so every time I see Frank, I always look at him like, you know, you are my boss, but it's actually because of you, even as a student, that I've kind of ended up on this career track. So admissions, Admissions always had that pull, but primarily through tour guiding.
• 5:46
Speaker A: Okay, interesting. Yeah. And I guess, I mean, I'd love to hear a little bit about. And you've been in this space for a little while, and I'm kind of curious. You know, applicants always have these misconceptions, I think, about admissions officers or even the admissions process. Like, is there anything that comes to mind for you, like a misconception that you want to sort of debunk here? Yeah.
• 6:04
Speaker B: I'm guessing you hear this one a lot, Graham. And applicants who are listening to this, I hope you hear it and internalize it. We are humans, and I think this is one of the greatest misconceptions out there. You know, we don't think of ourselves as gatekeepers, and we are fundamentally interested in people. We are fundamentally interested in getting to know our applicants. I. I do understand that at different schools this manifests differently. And I know that not every school has the capacity or that they're not operating at the particular scale that allows them to do a ton of one on one interaction. But at the foster school, I can promise, you know, we are here as people. We want to get to know you and I. I think the misconception is that somehow we are behind this curtain that you can never cross. We're just people. And I want everyone to feel comfortable.
• 6:49
Speaker A: I'm glad that you say that because that's part of the reason why we do these shows, right? To have, you know, let candidates hear who you are and, you know, we'll do our kind of lightning round, fun questions at the end. And we do a lot of things at Cleared Met with our Real Human series. Right. To try to just make sure that the listeners know that the students, the alumni and the, you know, admissions officers are just people. How is your thinking about admissions changed over the years? If it has, I mean, because again, you've seen undergrad grad, but also for quite a bit of time. So how have things shifted for you?
• 7:21
Speaker B: Yeah, you know, on the admissions side, when we are assessing applications, I think it's always this balance between assessing technical skills and knowledge and, you know, the things you've actually learned and practice on the job. But then, you know, trying to also assess the soft skills, the human skills. And I would argue that over time the balance has shifted to the point that those soft skills are even more important. And every single year I think that we're trying to put more and more emphasis on being able to assess those pieces of it, the technical skills. We can teach you that. Right. And you're probably going to have opportunities to learn on the job and in your future careers. The technical skills that you will need in 10 years may not exist in the same way that you will need them to today. So for me it's the things that I think are going to endure. Your communication skills, your excitedness to learn, your interest in other people, your ability to work on teams, your critical thinking and resourcefulness. To any extent that we can assess those things, I think that is just so critically important. And over time I'd argue that the balance has shifted even more toward prioritizing that second bucket of skills in the admission process.
• 8:35
Speaker A: I'm really happy to hear you say that because I'm a big, you know, big believer in, you know, kind of liberal arts education and kind of, you know, that sort of well rounded stuff. And my co host, who I do, you know, we do a weekly Clear Admit podcast episode. He's more of a kind of, oh, no, you know, computer programmers are the best people to go get an mba. I'm like, well, you know, people with all kinds of degrees can go and we argue a little bit about, you know, who's best positioned in this era of AI and other things to kind of make use of these tools. And I think, you know, obviously you're going to have that, have to have that human in the loop. It's got to be someone with judgment and all these skills. You just, you know, were mentioning what's something that applicants tend to worry about far more than you think they should.
• 9:18
Speaker B: I, I've actually spent a lot of time thinking about this and I, I always say that I think people are too focused on standing out and they forget about fitting in. And, yeah, I. I oftentimes think back to this. I. Graham, I don't know if I can. I don't know if I can mention a movie on the podcast, Copyright Infringement.
• 9:37
  Speaker A: No, it's fine.
• 9:38
Speaker B: We may date ourselves slightly, but I don't know if you remember the movie. I think it's called 21. And it was about this guy who was trying to get into med school, and he eventually started counting cards. He got caught, like, lost everything. But the very end of it, kind of like the turnaround for him was that he was able to use this story to really stand out for a scholarship in the med school admission process. And I always looked at that, and as a student, I watched it, like, wow, that's really cool. But I think sometimes that thought is actually a little bit too pervasive. And folks think, man, I've got to create this incredible story, or I've got to, like, really show how I'm different than everyone else when the reality is on the admissions side. I'm looking to make sure you're going to fit into our community. And I want to be clear that I'm not. I'm not saying that individualism isn't appreciated, and those individual characteristics, the ways that you are unique, those things are appreciated. They are strengths. I don't want to devalue that. But at the end of the day, I want to make sure that you're going to come in and show alignment with our values. I want to make sure that you're going to come in and be able to take advantage of the resources that we offer. And I want to make sure that you are interested in something that we can support, you know, at. It's very much about making sure that we're a good fit for you and that you're a good fit for us. And for folks that focus so much on standing out, I think sometimes that second part about fit is the. Is the trade off that you make.
• 11:02
Speaker A: I wonder if sometimes the candidates who are, you know, trying so desperately to stand out are kind of not really being themselves even, you know, or they're kind of pushing all their chips in to go with the 21 analogy, pushing all their chips in on this, like, one aspect of their background or an experience they had that they think is going to be, you know, this blockbuster kind of thing that will catch your eye, but then they're maybe ignoring some of the other things that would be really important, too.
• 11:26
Speaker B: Yeah, absolutely. And I like the way you phrase that, is that I don't think it's. I don't even think it's necessarily a fabrication. I think it's an over indexing on those things that seem really flashy.
• 11:39
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 11:39
Speaker B: At the expense of being able to highlight those other things that are just kind of the bread and butter of, of an application.
• 11:46
Speaker A: Yeah, that's a great, yeah, great way to think of it. Looking back at students that you've admitted over the years. I mean, I'm guessing now, you know, you've been at Foster long enough where you've seen students, you know, come into the program, go through it, graduate, et cetera. Right. So what are some of the qualities that you think tends to distinguish those students who make the very most of the opportunities that are available during the mba. Any thoughts come to mind?
• 12:08
Speaker B: Yeah, I. I immediately think about resilience as one of the most important things. And I don't know that this is necessarily about. I don't know that you need resilience to take advantage of our opportunities, but I think you need resilience to be successful in an MBA program. This is a program that's going to challenge you. It is a program that is going to teach you a lot, but oftentimes not in the easiest way possible. I think about something like the job search. It is very, very rare that somebody applies to a single job that is their first choice and they get that job and they never worry about all the other stuff that comes with, like applying to multiple jobs and getting a lot of no's.
• 12:48
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 12:49
Speaker B: And so I think, I think that that resilience is really important. The other piece of resilience that I think we don't talk about enough because people hear resilience and I think oftentimes they simply think, okay, that is in reference to my ability to push through hard times or in reference to my ability to get back up after I've fallen down. I think another type of resilience that I always want to focus on is how people respond to ambiguity. And this is the one that I actually think is even more important in today's day and age. The career search doesn't look the same way that it used to 15 years ago, 10 years ago. You know, the job market doesn't look the same way it did a couple of years ago. The way that we can actually interact with academic material doesn't look the way it did three years ago. And so the entire world that we live in, but the MBA is no exception. It is just kind of navigating these very ambiguous situations, these ambiguous processes. That, you know, they're not even necessarily structured. It's just like you've got a goal and you don't really know how to get there. And we can do our best to provide frameworks, we can do our best to offer resources, but the people who are able to be the most successful are those that are comfortable with that little bit of ambiguity and they're comfortable driving their own processes in spite of the ambiguity.
• 14:11
Speaker A: Yeah. And I really like this analogy also. It just makes me think of, you know, if you're an MBA candidate and you get into, you know, a program like Foster and you say, oh, I'm going to. I'm going to work at Microsoft or Amazon or McKinsey or whatever it is. Right. And you only apply to that one company. You know, that would be like, is anyone applying to only one business school? Right. I mean, you would never do that. You know, you always would apply to several business schools because, you know, it just, it's not a science. There's part art, part science. You know, it's. And so this idea that, you know, you're going to go through the recruiting process with just one.
• 14:44
  Speaker B: One firm.
• 14:46
Speaker A: Yeah. That just would be a little bit shortsighted. So I think you're right. You got to be able to, you know, adjust to ambiguity there. I also feel like with what's happening now, and especially in a city like Seattle, there's so much happening with technology these days that there are probably opportunities that, you know, the current students who are going to be second years when they came in to business school and foster, there are probably new opportunities out there for them in, in AI, you know, in. I mean, there's all kinds of things happening, right, that, that, that probably weren't even there when they were applying to business school or, you know, they hadn't thought of at least. So. Yeah.
• 15:17
Speaker B: Oh, yeah. And it's not even just that there are new job functions or new initiatives at these companies. In many cases, it's. I mean, it's brand new multimillion or multibillion dollar companies that exist in Seattle that didn't exist at the time that you, you may have applied. So it is just. It's constantly shifting.
• 15:38
Speaker A: Yeah, definitely. Let's talk about alumni. So you guys do different things on campus to welcome back your former students. And what's something that those students or now grads tell you that they didn't fully appreciate when they were studying at Foster, but now they're out in the workforce, they come back to campus and they're kind of Waxing poetic about something that they, that they miss or didn't really appreciate fully.
• 16:00
Speaker B: Yeah. The one that I actually hear the most often is that folks, they didn't branch out enough to take advantage of the university's larger resources. You know, the Foster school, we are an incredible place and in many ways I think we're very self sufficient, efficient. You know, we've got all the classes you'll ever need, we've got the clubs, we've got great faculty. But I think that for an MBA student, that's only one part of the benefit. And we are part of this University of Washington that has incredible academic departments across multiple fields. We've got, you know, good sports, great school spirit. We're in a, in a great city. There's a ton of research happening here. There's all this stuff that exists that the Foster School is part of that I think not everyone always remembers to take advantage of. And part of it's because the Foster School has so much that like, you don't, you don't need to branch out to the other parts of the university to get a full MBA experience, but people will come back and they'll, they'll say, wow, you know, I realize the law school is right across the street. It would have been helpful to take a contracts class or, you know, I'm working in the healthcare sector now and it didn't even occur to me that I should be taking classes in the public health school. I mean there's, there's just so much of a large university here.
• 17:15
  Speaker A: Oh yeah.
• 17:16
Speaker B: That I, I would never want someone to come in and think that they've got to limit themselves to what's at Foster.
• 17:21
Speaker A: Okay. Yeah, that makes sense. Tell me about a stereotype that people might associate with U Washington or Foster specifically, that you want to kind of take apart.
• 17:32
Speaker B: Yeah, actually I, this is one that we talk about as a team all the time and it's is kind of this double edged sword. It's our connection to the tech industry. We are really great with tech and I think we have this reputation for being one of, if not the best schools for tech anywhere in the world. And that's, that is well deserved. Every single year we send such a strong percentage of our grads into the tech industry. We deserve that reputation for being super, super good at tech. But I think that where it's a double edged sword is that sometimes I think folks think that we're one dimensional and that's all we're good at. And I want to dispel that because we're really good at a couple other things, too. You know, we were great with consulting. There's a ton. I alluded to it, but there's a ton of healthcare in Seattle. There's. There's some really cool opportunities with some of these big businesses. Like, you know, Starbucks is here. We've got some great outdoor industries like Nike and Adidas that hire our students. There's really cool stuff with, you know, some of the pharmaceutical companies, biohealth, biotech. Like, there's just a lot here. And I, again, like, I never. I never want to take away from the fact that, like, if you just want pure tech, like, if you want Amazon, Microsoft, we are the school you should be looking at. But I also want to say that, you know, don't think that because you're not interested in those companies, we can't support you. We do a lot of other stuff really well.
• 18:53
Speaker A: Okay. Yeah. And I mean, just going back to what you were saying earlier, you know, this idea that Foster is part of the University of Washington, which is this, you know, vast university with all these resources in terms of, you know, you could take a law class, you could take a healthcare or public health class. Right. So there's a lot on offer that could help you to kind of position your career however you want. And. Yeah, so that. That makes a lot of sense. What role does there. This is kind of a great segue. What role does your city. So in this case, Seattle or. Or even, you know, the Pacific Northwest, kind of. What role does that region of the U.S. play in the student experience at Foster?
• 19:29
Speaker B: Oh, it's huge, Graham. You know, I actually think that. I think that among top MBA programs, we all have more in common with each other than we have differences. And so to really find the things that make us different, you end up kind of nitpicking or identifying things like location. And so, you know, for some people, it may seem secondary, but I would actually argue that the. The city of Seattle in our location is one of the biggest differentiators. And what I think makes it so special is not just the opportunity that we have here, but it's our kind of exclusive relationship with that opportunity. I've got a little spiel, though, and I always mention this, that for those. For those listeners who are not familiar with Seattle, you may know us like, we've got a reputation for rain. We've got really good outdoors right now. We've got a really great athletics scene. Good, good, good, good teams all around. But for the purpose of the mba, I also want to emphasize Seattle has a disproportionate representation of industry leading and world changing companies that are headquartered here or that have a corporate operation here. And that in and of itself is really special. But I know that that dynamic, you know, being in a big city with lots of opportunity, that's not unique to Foster. What is a little bit more unique though is, is our exclusivity with it. Foster is one of a very small number of top MBA programs in a major US City that doesn't share that city with other top MBA programs.
• 20:54
  Speaker A: Great point.
• 20:54
Speaker B: And that means that when we are knocking on, you know, Microsoft's door to ask for a company visit, it's. It's just us. Or somebody's trying to invite a panelist to come to speak to us from Nordstrom. It's just us. The location and the proximity translates to opportunity and exclusivity for our students. That's really, really powerful. So I, I would argue that the location that we have is, that's the first step. But then the, the fact that, you know, we are the. To. To offer a pun, because we're the Huskies, that's our mascot. But like, you know, we're the big dogs in town, that, that ends up being very powerful for us as well.
• 21:31
Speaker A: Yeah, that makes sense too. And I, I feel like it's a really Foster being the MBA program in that market and it's a big market with some big companies, so that exclusivity seems important. I also think, I mean, I have this vision and I haven't spent a ton of time on campus, but I have this vision of it being relatively easy to get away and into the mountains or you know, whatever you're into. Hiking, probably some skiing is not far away, etc. Right. So it's.
• 21:57
  Speaker B: Oh yeah.
• 21:57
Speaker A: And being out on the water. So I just think of it also as a great nature kind of hub too. Yeah.
• 22:02
Speaker B: Yeah. For sure. The quality of life and being able to balance all of these different dimensions. It's so powerful here in Seattle. Like, I, I just spent time talking about the industry that we have, but we balance that with these. I don't know, like that we balance it with the fact that we don't take ourselves so seriously. Like, I wear jeans to work every day.
• 22:22
  Speaker A: Yeah.
• 22:22
Speaker B: You know that there you've got, that, you got the outdoors. I like. My favorite park is just 10 minutes from my house. I, I don't think I can legally use the word run because I'm going too slowly. But I go around that park every morning. The campus is right on the water you mentioned. It's like 30, 45 minute drive to get to skiing, to get to some fantastic hiking. I mean, the balance that we have is honestly really, really special. And of course our campus is super accessible to downtown. We're about a five minute train ride from the center of downtown Seattle. So it is this kind of great juxtaposition where we, in a lot of ways it feels like we've got it all.
• 23:05
Speaker A: Yeah, definitely. So, Brent, I wonder if you'll stay on and do these fun kind of Lightning crown, Lightning round questions with me. Those are all the kind of serious questions I had. But let's, let's do this so that our listeners get to know you a little bit better. So I'll just, we'll go rapid fire. The first one is coffee or tea?
• 23:21
  Speaker B: Bubble tea.
• 23:23
Speaker A: Oh, wow. Okay. Bubble tea. Beach or mountains? This is tough for someone.
• 23:29
Speaker B: Well, this is tough. I mean, you want lightning round, but Graham, in my intro you didn't mention I grew up in Hawaii, so I came from the beach. And now I've got to compare that to mountains. I still, I'm gonna go mountains.
• 23:42
  Speaker A: Okay.
• 23:42
Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. But that's hard. That's real hard.
• 23:44
Speaker A: Yeah. Are you a morning person or a night owl?
• 23:47
Speaker B: Generally I'm a morning person once I wake up.
• 23:50
Speaker A: I hope you had your coffee or maybe a bubble tea this morning because I recording in the morning.
• 23:55
  Speaker B: But yeah.
• 23:56
Speaker A: What about a pet peeve that you have?
• 23:58
Speaker B: I hope this isn't controversial and I hope this doesn't alienate any of your listeners, but it's people who put two items in the overhead bin on an airplane before everyone has had a chance to at least put their first item up there.
• 24:11
Speaker A: That I don't think anyone have a problem with you saying that. That's, you know, I feel like that's really common courtesy. Yeah. What about a comfort food?
• 24:18
Speaker B: Oh, so many. I'm gonna say a great tofu banh mi sandwich.
• 24:26
Speaker A: Okay, Excellent. What about a guilty pleasure? Something that you just like to do when you're kicking back.
• 24:32
Speaker B: Yeah. Well, honestly, I now want to say a second. Tofu banh mi sandwich is the guilty pleasure. No, I, I think guilty pleasure would be like really, really trashy reality tv.
• 24:43
  Speaker A: Okay.
• 24:44
Speaker B: I, I love to just zone out and watch. Watch some of the trashiest stuff you'll find.
• 24:49
Speaker A: Excellent. We've had some great. You know, I've been doing this, you know, for a period of several weeks now, connecting with some of your peers and I love the answers to these questions. What about the best advice you've ever received?
• 24:59
Speaker B: Ooh, this one? I, I, it's lightning round. I don't want to provide too much context, but I remember it was back in high school and growing up near the beach. One time our academic dean kind of said, like, hey, you're not, don't, don't, don't skip class. But if you are going to skip class, you might as well enjoy it. And for me, I think that that advice is something that I try to carry through now, which is like, you got to make the right decisions in your life, but regardless of the decisions that you make, you have to own it. And if you're choosing something, find the joy in it.
• 25:32
Speaker A: Yeah, that's great advice. I could make a little. I got to make like a. I don't know, like a blog post with all these bits of advice I've gotten from doing these episodes. They're really good. What's one thing that you think applicants should stop doing immediately?
• 25:46
Speaker B: Using AI to generate ideas for their essays. I think AI is a great tool to refine content, but I don't think that AI should actually be the first stop on, on any written material that you're sending to the office.
• 26:01
Speaker A: Yeah. Especially, you know, you're trying to be authentic. Right. So you, you know.
• 26:05
  Speaker B: Yeah.
• 26:05
Speaker A: You don't want somebody else doing the thinking for you. What is the best thing? This is the last one I've got for you. What is the best thing that you've read, watched, or listened to recently? And let's say we're not going to talk about reality tv. We'll do something different.
• 26:18
Speaker B: No, I would never describe that as best. Ooh. You know, I. The thing that comes to my mind actually is something that's still about a year old, but that's fine. I really liked the Andor TV show. I loved Andor.
