- 0:00We're starting a new book, the book of Joel.
- 0:03I realized after the fact that the book of Joel was written
- 0:08before the book of Isaiah and from my study Bible it was
- 0:12listing all the different prophets and when they reigned
- 0:16during what king. And I realized that the reason
- 0:21Joel wasn't listed is because he doesn't reference a king, so
- 0:26they can't place when it was. However, there is a general time
- 0:30frame of Joel's ministry actually in Judah and then also
- 0:35in Nineveh. So in Judah it says his ministry
- 0:39was about 835 to 796 BC and then his ministry, oh wait, I'm
- 0:47sorry, that's Joel's ministry. Then after him came Jonah.
- 0:51So anyway, he was in that little in that time frame before Isaiah
- 0:56and his book is only three chapters long.
- 0:59So it's a very short book. So we're going to cover this and
- 1:02then we'll move on to the the next prophet.
- 1:05I think I've got all of them in order now of when they were
- 1:09speaking and I'll try to do the rest follow up in order.
- 1:12There was another one too. I think it was Obadiah that was
- 1:15not listed, but I'll do that in sequence because I did find that
- 1:20part too. So I'll start by reading the
- 1:22introduction that's from the study Bible that I have and it
- 1:26says why read this book if you long to personally experience
- 1:31God's work and power. Joel Prophecies are Joel's
- 1:35prophecies will resonate with you.
- 1:37His predictions, though frightening at times, will also
- 1:40inspire you. In fact, Joel prophesied the
- 1:44coming of the Holy Spirit, linking God's work in the Old
- 1:49Testament with the birth of the New Testament church.
- 1:53Reading Joel will show you God's intense desire for intimacy with
- 1:59all His people. Who wrote the book?
- 2:02Joel, who is a prophet of God. When was it written?
- 2:06Some think Joel wrote during Jeremiah's lifetime around six O
- 2:109 BC. Others say he could have written
- 2:13it later after the Jews returned from exile in Babylon around
- 2:175:38 BC. But because Joel mentioned no
- 2:22king or and spoke of elders as leaders in verse one or in
- 2:28chapter 1 verse 2, still others suggest a much earlier date,
- 2:33perhaps around 835 BC when Judah had a child king.
- 2:39According to Second Kings Chapter 11 verse 21.
- 2:43What was happening at this time? Assuming the earlier date, 7
- 2:47year old Joash had just been crowned king over Judah.
- 2:51Though Jehoiadiah the high priest was the power behind the
- 2:55throne, under Joash's wicked father and grandmother, Pagan
- 3:01idol worship had flourished in Judah.
- 3:05See Second Kings chapter 8 through 11.
- 3:09To whom was it written and why? The prophet Joel wrote to the
- 3:13people of Judah, urging them to return to God.
- 3:16With Joash's wicked father and grandmother out of the way, Joel
- 3:21saw tremendous opportunity for renewal in the land.
- 3:24But he also warned Judah that judgment in the form of an
- 3:28agricultural disaster would come if they did not repent.
- 3:33What to look for in Joel? Watch for God's double barrelled
- 3:37plan for his people, a specific plan of punishment for sin, but
- 3:41also a promise to defend his people zealously.
- 3:46In both modes, look for God's passionate concern for His
- 3:51people. So just to put another
- 3:54perspective in it, it's always helpful to have timelines of
- 3:57when things certain things happened.
- 3:59So the Kingdom was divided, but after Solomon, the Kingdom
- 4:07became divided and that's when we had the 10 tribes.
- 4:11The 10 northern tribes were of that were called Israel and the
- 4:152 southern tribes that were called Judah.
- 4:18So it was Judah and Benjamin in the southern tribe and then the
- 4:22the rest of them in the northern tribe.
- 4:25So that division of the Kingdom happened, the ministries of
- 4:28Elijah and Elijah in Israel, that already happened.
- 4:33And then came Joel's ministry in Judah.
- 4:36So we'll read the first, the first chapter is it's one of
- 4:41those prophecies that, you know, could have it happened multiple
- 4:50times. Like it's, it doesn't, you don't
- 4:53really know if it's something that happened, you know, there
- 4:59is something in the near future or the long term future.
- 5:02It really doesn't give a, a good understanding of it.
- 5:06But, but then the second one, the 2nd chapter, the 3rd chapter
- 5:11really seem like end times kind of prophecies there.
- 5:14But we'll read them and I'll do the Bible studies, questions and
- 5:19answers. So the word of the Lord that
- 5:21came to Joel, son of Pathiel, an invasion of locusts is what this
- 5:26called here? This you elders.
- 5:29So this is just like what the introduction was telling us.
- 5:32He's addressing the elders and he's not addressing a king or
- 5:35anything. So he's talking to the elders
- 5:37here. This you elders.
- 5:39Listen, all who live in the land, has anything like this
- 5:44ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors?
- 5:49So I think it's the way it sounds here is that something
- 5:53just happened. And he is, he is talking, I
- 5:58guess he's explaining to it, explaining why it happened to
- 6:03the people. That's what it sounds like to
- 6:05me. But he's saying, you know, has
- 6:07anything ever happened like this?
- 6:09Tell it to your children and let your children tell it to their
- 6:13children and their children to the next generation.
- 6:17So he wants this what happened to be told generation after
- 6:23generation after generation. And obviously that is happening
- 6:27because the book of Joel was written and people, anybody who
- 6:30reads the the prophet Joel's book, it goes on for even
- 6:35further generations where they hear about this.
- 6:39So what? What the locust swarm has left,
- 6:43the great locusts have eaten. What the great locusts have left
- 6:47the young locusts have eaten. What the young locusts have
- 6:51left, other locusts have eaten. So to me, this sounds like it
- 6:56could either be a metaphor or it could be a plague.
- 7:00Like this literally happened. And often it can be both.
- 7:04It can be a literal happening, but also symbolic meaning.
- 7:09So a little bit later, it sounds like it's also symbolic meaning,
- 7:13meaning, but it talks about, when I was reading these, I was
- 7:17kind of summarizing what these are saying it it talks about a
- 7:21famine or a plague, the plague of locusts.
- 7:24It talks about a war also, and it talks about a famine.
- 7:29Like these are things that are also talked about in the Book of
- 7:33Revelation when the seals are opened and there's like, first,
- 7:37there's a conqueror, second, there's like war, third, there's
- 7:41famine and pestilence and all those things like, and that's
- 7:48the same thing that happened when Egypt.
- 7:52There were the 10 plagues that happened in Egypt before the
- 7:56Israelites were freed from there.
- 7:59So God, it's like history repeats.
- 8:03There's a lot of things. These are when these kinds of
- 8:06things happen. It does really seem because they
- 8:10were repeated over and over in history, it does seem that this
- 8:13is God's way of sending partial judgment, not final judgment,
- 8:19but warnings to people that you know, these are consequences of
- 8:25their actions that these things are happening.
- 8:28That's that's the take away that I get with this is that when,
- 8:32when a a nation is rebellious and away from God, these things
- 8:38will happen to them. Plagues will come, war will
- 8:41come, famine will come. And it again, these things just
- 8:48seem to repeat over and over. So he's identifying that these
- 8:51locusts have come and it's it's like, has any, has this ever
- 8:54happened? You know, I kind of felt so a
- 8:56plague. And I was kind of thinking of
- 8:58that of that personally, in 2020 was when that whole COVID thing
- 9:05happened. I was thinking, did anything
- 9:08ever happened like this where it just shut down the whole world?
- 9:11Like, not in my life it didn't, you know, maybe in others lives.
- 9:14But I'm almost having the same reaction as Joel.
- 9:17It's just like, when did this ever happen?
- 9:20And of course, you know, we'll probably talk about this to
- 9:23future people. I mean, it's something that
- 9:26significantly impacted everyone who was alive at that time.
- 9:31And and it's, you know, to me that is like that is a
- 9:35pestilence that was like a plague that came about us.
- 9:39I think that was a warning from God.
- 9:41And just like these times and now, you know, we're also
- 9:45experiencing not long after that happened, I think it was in 22
- 9:51or 23, I can't remember now. 22 I think was that when Russia and
- 9:57Ukraine started at war and then in 2023 we have the Israel and
- 10:04Hamas and other countries that are at war.
- 10:08And these are also things that Jesus talked about in Matthew.
- 10:12I think it's chapter 24 where he talks about wars and rumors of
- 10:16wars and famines and plagues and earthquakes and things like
- 10:19that. Well, all this stuff is
- 10:21happening right now. So it's it's a repetition and it
- 10:25happened back, you know, in the time of Joel when apparently
- 10:31because he experienced this, because it sound like he's
- 10:34saying, you know, has anything ever happened like this before?
- 10:38And it was something extremely devastating with these locusts
- 10:41that came and just ate up everything.
- 10:44And then he's saying, wake up you drunkards and weep.
- 10:48Wail, all you drinkers of wine, wail because of the new wine,
- 10:52for it has been snatched from your lips.
- 10:55So this is kind of like, you know, there's not going to be
- 10:58any wine. You know, you're happy with the
- 11:00wine that you have, but it's gone because our, our land has
- 11:03been devastated. Then he says, a nation has
- 11:07invaded my land, a mighty army without number.
- 11:11It has the teeth of a lion, the fangs of a lioness.
- 11:16It has laid waste my vines and ruined my fig trees.
- 11:20It is stripped off their bark and thrown it away, leaving
- 11:24their branches white. So there was something that came
- 11:29in that was very significant and destroyed the land.
- 11:35And the Bible isn't specific about what it is.
- 11:38The study Bible has some theories on what it is, but the
- 11:42Bible doesn't really tell us, so it's only speculation.
- 11:45But we can see that he talked about a plague.
- 11:49He's talking about some sort of a war with a mighty army.
- 11:53Huge army coming in and just devastating all the land.
- 11:58Mourn like a virgin in sackcloth, grieving for the
- 12:02betrothed of her youth. Grain offerings and drink
- 12:06offerings are cut off from the House of the Lord.
- 12:10This made me also think about like sacrifices stopped.
- 12:13And that's something else that's futuristic where Daniel talked
- 12:18about it too, like the the 70th week that people talk about or
- 12:22the the final week of this age of time period that there, you
- 12:29know, there's a the sacrifices will be stopped.
- 12:32And again, this is just not. Maybe this is not the prophecy
- 12:35about that, because it does sound like this was something
- 12:38that happened in past tense Joel, but it also history
- 12:43repeats itself. The priests are in mourning
- 12:47those who minister before the Lord.
- 12:49The fields are ruined, the ground is dried up, the grain is
- 12:52destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the olive oil fails.
- 12:57So there's going to be a famine when all your food is
- 13:00devastated. Despair.
- 13:03You farmers whale, you vine growers grieve for the wheat and
- 13:08the barley. Because the harvest of the field
- 13:11is destroyed. The vine is dried up and the fig
- 13:15tree is withered. The pomegranate, the palm and
- 13:20the apple tree, all the trees of the field are dried up.
- 13:23Surely the people's joy is withered away.
- 13:27So again, this to me, it really sounds like the Book of
- 13:31Revelation. And I think there were a thing,
- 13:37a few things like Jeremiah 29 verse 17 talks about sword
- 13:41famine and plague, and that was like in the past Nebuchadnezzar.
- 13:45So again, history repeats itself.
- 13:49Put on sackcloth, you priest, and mourn whale.
- 13:53You who minister before the altar, come spend the night in
- 13:56sackcloth, you who minister before my God.
- 13:59For the green offerings and the drink offerings are withheld
- 14:03from the House of your God. Declare a holy fast, call a
- 14:09sacred assembly, summon the elders and all who live in the
- 14:13land to the House of the Lord your God and cry out to the Lord
- 14:19at last for that day, for the day of the Lord is near, it will
- 14:26come like destruction from the Almighty.
- 14:29Now this is something that he's, it seems like he is just saying
- 14:33like this is horrible and he's feeling like the day of the Lord
- 14:38is near because the day of the Lord is usually the final day of
- 14:43judgement. And it does seem like the next
- 14:45couple of chapters that are in Joel do talk about end times.
- 14:50But I think he's kind of comparing the devastation they
- 14:53were experiencing, thinking that the day of the Lord is near.
- 14:56And and that's happened a lot in multiple generations where
- 15:00things got so bad that people were thinking, this is it, you
- 15:05know, like the Lord is coming back.
- 15:07And it seems like he was also thinking that, but he also talks
- 15:11about more things like prophetically.
- 15:14Then he says, has not the food been cut off before our very
- 15:20eyes? Joy and gladness from the House
- 15:22of our God. The sheep, the seeds are
- 15:25shriveled beneath the clods. The Storehart horses houses are
- 15:31in ruins. The granaries have been broken
- 15:34down for the grain has dried up. How the cattle moan, the herds
- 15:38mill about because they have no pasture.
- 15:41Even the flocks of sheep are suffering to you, Lord, I call
- 15:46for the fire. For fire has devoured the
- 15:49pastures in the wilderness, and flames have burned up all the
- 15:54trees of the field. Even the wild animals pant for
- 15:59you. The streams of water have dried
- 16:02up and fire has devoured the pastures in the wilderness.
- 16:07So it seems like they've been devastated by fire also.
- 16:11And that's the end of Chapter 1. So again, we could also relate
- 16:15to that like we've had in the United States have had and in
- 16:19other countries there have been these massive fires.
- 16:22There's been massive fires in Canada and I don't remember all
- 16:25the other countries. I haven't paid as much attention
- 16:29to them, but I know that there's lots of fires.
- 16:31We certainly had them in the United States in a variety of
- 16:35areas where these fires were devastating the lands.
- 16:38And it's just weird or interesting that all of these
- 16:44things that God uses as judgement are reoccurring like
- 16:50these really awful storms that we are having, this really bad
- 16:55weather that we are having these, you know, just strange
- 16:59weather. There are earthquakes too, that
- 17:03are happening in various places, just like Jesus said.
- 17:06And the, the last days, there will be those things and they,
- 17:10they have been increasing in, in frequency and devastation.
- 17:15And I was doing some research on this a few years ago, just when
- 17:19I, it kind of triggered a question in my mind, are these
- 17:21increasing? Are these really happening?
- 17:23Like checking it out And apparently that these things
- 17:26used to be published, but now they were taken offline because
- 17:30it started concerning people too much because they aren't they
- 17:34are showing that earthquakes are increasing in the number and
- 17:39frequency of them. And and so that caused people to
- 17:43concern. It's like, OK, little don't
- 17:44let's not get everybody. It's really strange, you know,
- 17:47like we'll put fear in people for some things, but then other
- 17:50things we want to hide. But that supports what the Bible
- 17:53says. So maybe that's why it was
- 17:55hidden. But anyway, there are there are
- 17:59certainly things that are happening right now that seem to
- 18:02be a little bit of judgment on us.
- 18:05And it's probably a wake up call for all of us to refocus,
- 18:10recommit to the Lord, or commit for the first time to the Lord
- 18:14to turn to Him and to seek him while he may be found.
- 18:20Because at the time when Jesus returns, that's going to be too
- 18:24late. So now is the time to turn to
- 18:27Him. I'm going to read what the Study
- 18:28Bible says about this chapter and then wrap it up.
- 18:32So who were these elders? During the time each community
- 18:36in Judah was governed locally by a group of respected elders, The
- 18:40type of government was known as a Regency.
- 18:43Joel appealed to the community reader leaders rather than to
- 18:48the king. When were these predictions
- 18:51fulfilled? The plague of locusts probably
- 18:54occurred not long after the writing of Joel.
- 18:58Some also think in addition to the locust plague, Joel was
- 19:02predicting a military invasion. It is believed that the
- 19:07Scythians, a tribe from the Black Sea region, were the
- 19:11vehicle by which God punished Judah.
- 19:14Several centuries later, the Scythians put an end to the
- 19:18career of Alexander the Great. Why fear a locust?
- 19:23The locust is an aggressive type of grasshopper.
- 19:26An army of these insects can devastate entire fields of crops
- 19:30within minutes, bringing economic ruin and destroying
- 19:33food supplies. A locust can consume every green
- 19:36thing in its path, all the while making a loud, terrifying noise
- 19:42with its wings. Was drunken drunkenness a
- 19:46problem in Judah? Yes, apparently Judah's upper
- 19:50classes consumed great quantities of wine.
- 19:53Times were prosperous, and perhaps out of boredom or a
- 19:57twisted sense of competition to outdrink each other, they
- 20:00shamelessly drank themselves into oblivion.
- 20:04What was new wine? It was the newly pressed juice
- 20:09of of the grape. It contained less flavor and
- 20:12less alcohol because of the short aging process.
- 20:16What? What nation was this?
- 20:18Joel used this metaphor to describe the swarms of insects
- 20:22that would later invade Judah. Some believe it also refers in a
- 20:26second, secondary sense to the Scythians, a tribe from the
- 20:32Black Sea region who would later invade from the north.
- 20:38Why ask for a holy fast and sacred assembly because of
- 20:43impending doom? Joel told Judah to show God
- 20:47their seriousness by declaring a national day of fasting and
- 20:51prayer. What is the day of the Lord?
- 20:54This refers to any time God deals with the nation or
- 20:58generation so that it will return to its spiritual senses.
- 21:03The final day of reckoning, however, will be when Christ
- 21:05returns. And that's the end of chapter
- 21:10one from the book of Joel.
