Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I think I so value time home, and that's kind
- 0:03Speaker 1: of what we wanted to get into, the work-life balance.
- 0:05Speaker 1: It's crazy when you say to someone, yeah, I just
- 0:08Speaker 1: worked a World Cup and I was away from my family,
- 0:10Speaker 1: but at the end of the day, I'm home all
- 0:11Speaker 1: of August, right? So that's also a crazy luxury that
- 0:16Speaker 1: I have busy seasons, and we both have that, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: trying to balance it all....
- 0:34Speaker 2: All right. Welcome back, everyone, to Whatever It Takes with
- 0:37Speaker 2: Jenny Taft and Carly Lloyd. Jenny, we did one episode
- 0:43Speaker 2: so far. How are you feeling?
- 0:44Speaker 1: I feel good. The office closet is still somewhat clean.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I think it is looking great.
- 0:51Speaker 2: The frames, you probably had to remove a lot of
- 0:55Speaker 2: clothes and shoes in that background, but If.
- 0:57Speaker 1: You see below me, I have a donation bag. I've
- 1:00Speaker 1: filled up many bags of clothes to donate. And you
- 1:04Speaker 1: know what? I just, I enjoy clothes. I am, I
- 1:06Speaker 1: do television, so I have to have options, but I also,
- 1:09Speaker 1: I do enjoy it. My husband always says, if you
- 1:11Speaker 1: come over, just go into her closet, take whatever you
- 1:14Speaker 1: need and don't bring it back.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I guess you get gifted some clothes. You rent clothes.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I do get gifted a handful of clothes. I tried
- 1:23Speaker 1: the rental thing and I'm going to admit, I didn't
- 1:26Speaker 1: love it. It just... It felt like I was wearing
- 1:29Speaker 1: clothes that had been worn a ton.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Because there's some companies that you can, what, rent for, like,
- 1:36Speaker 2: seasons or, like, a couple of months, and then you
- 1:38Speaker 2: just hand them all back in.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I actually tried it ahead of the World Cup. I
- 1:42Speaker 1: did one subscription service, and I was like, let's see
- 1:44Speaker 1: how these clothes look. It just didn't... It didn't vibe
- 1:47Speaker 1: with me. I did feel like they were worn a lot,
- 1:50Speaker 1: and that kind of weirded me out in a lot
- 1:52Speaker 1: of ways. But I... don't think that's fair because I
- 1:55Speaker 1: donate clothes to my friends and family. And my mom
- 1:58Speaker 1: just said, hey, what were you wearing? I'm stealing that
- 2:01Speaker 1: from you. So I am really lucky that a lot
- 2:03Speaker 1: of brands will send me clothes. I always post them.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But I also love fashion. It's fun for me. If
- 2:09Speaker 1: I was not working in sport, I think I would
- 2:12Speaker 1: really enjoy the fashion industry before I got a job
- 2:16Speaker 1: in TV. Because I know in episode one, we mentioned
- 2:19Speaker 1: my time in New York City. I interned for.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I love your fashion.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I had interned for a for actually a lingerie company
- 2:26Speaker 1: called Notori. And I loved learning about the industry in
- 2:30Speaker 1: that way. And it's very Devil Wears Prada in a
- 2:33Speaker 1: lot of ways. That is a real storyline. And I
- 2:36Speaker 1: learned a lot.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you always look great. I love all your reels
- 2:40Speaker 2: that you post, you know. I need a Jenny Taft
- 2:42Speaker 2: in my life.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Oh, watch out. Help dress me. Whatever it takes.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Help with the content.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Okay, good. Well, I'm going to get some reels for
- 2:49Speaker 1: the pod going, some outfit looks. I just have fun
- 2:51Speaker 1: with it. And I do think it's fun to show
- 2:54Speaker 1: off different styles on the field and on the sideline.
- 2:57Speaker 1: So thank you.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You know, you can come here and take whatever, whatever
- 3:01Speaker 1: you need. So What are you up to? What are
- 3:03Speaker 1: you watching? What are you loving? What are you reading? Anything?
- 3:06Speaker 2: As I sit here in my office looking at all
- 3:08Speaker 2: of the books that I have up on my shelves
- 3:11Speaker 2: that I really haven't touched, I'm always saying to myself,
- 3:14Speaker 2: I'm going to just start a book. And I want
- 3:18Speaker 2: to read. I have so many things that would be
- 3:21Speaker 2: great to read. And I just... It makes me tired
- 3:24Speaker 2: and I just can't find the time, as sad as
- 3:27Speaker 2: that is.
- 3:28Speaker 1: So I get it.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I get it. I did find time, Brian and I
- 3:32Speaker 2: recently did find time to watch Dutton Ranch, which I
- 3:39Speaker 2: highly recommend.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I've been thinking about that one. We've watched all of
- 3:42Speaker 1: the Yellowstones. Okay, me too.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah, the Taylor Sheridan show. He's phenomenal.
- 3:47Speaker 1: So good.
- 3:48Speaker 2: 1923, right?
- 3:50Speaker 1: 1883. All of the things. Don't even get me started.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I'm still recovering from the finale on the one with
- 3:57Speaker 1: Brendan Sklenar. Oh. I can't give it away because I'm
- 4:01Speaker 1: going to have a spoiler. Yeah.
- 4:02Speaker 2: But the last scene, I still think about it. A
- 4:05Speaker 2: lot of these things, there's so much time that goes by.
- 4:08Speaker 2: So Dutton Ranch, you know, next season's probably going to
- 4:11Speaker 2: be a year from now. And I'm like, I'm going
- 4:13Speaker 2: to already forget about what happened. In season one. I
- 4:17Speaker 2: need to watch that one. That's on my list. Do
- 4:19Speaker 2: you read much?
- 4:21Speaker 1: I just, I'm staring at three books, not multiple, but
- 4:24Speaker 1: I have been trying to read at night. I was
- 4:27Speaker 1: recently reading your book again, just a refresh on the
- 4:29Speaker 1: life of Carly Lloyd.
- 4:30Speaker 2: A lot has changed in that book.
- 4:32Speaker 1: A lot's changed. I think it was 2016.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:35Speaker 1: That's a whole different life. We'll get into that another day.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But Gigi was like, who's that? And I'm like, oh,
- 4:40Speaker 1: it's my friend. Don't worry about that. It's my friend Carly.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And then I just started watching the new Ted Lasso,
- 4:46Speaker 1: which is so fun. I've always loved Ted Lasso. And
- 4:48Speaker 1: it's about a women's team.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I think I still have to watch... Is this season four?
- 4:53Speaker 1: This is four.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Correct.
- 4:54Speaker 1: But they took some time off. I think I have
- 4:57Speaker 1: to watch three. I've always been a fan. I feel like,
- 5:00Speaker 1: of course, because of the worlds we're both in, I've
- 5:03Speaker 1: enjoyed that show always. But A friend of mine posted
- 5:05Speaker 1: on her social, it said something along the lines of,
- 5:08Speaker 1: Ted Lasso is the bluey for adults. And I liked that.
- 5:11Speaker 1: It's very feel good. It's light. I think it's witty.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Of course, we love soccer. I think it's well written.
- 5:20Speaker 1: And that's been fun to watch. I've always liked that show.
- 5:23Speaker 2: I don't have a lot of time these days.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Yeah. So how are we doing that? We're not reading.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And then another one coming soon. So Won't be having
- 5:31Speaker 2: much time. There's so many people that say, oh, yeah,
- 5:33Speaker 2: when you have a baby, you can catch up on
- 5:35Speaker 2: all your shows. And I'm like, what?
- 5:37Speaker 1: When? Who's catching up?
- 5:39Speaker 2: I never, ever did that with Harper.
- 5:41Speaker 1: No. I slept when Gigi slept. No. I mean, I
- 5:44Speaker 1: was napping. If she would nap, I would try to nap.
- 5:47Speaker 1: And I was not afraid of that time and needing it.
- 5:51Speaker 1: But when you have a Harper, you're not napping necessarily
- 5:55Speaker 1: with your second. You're busy.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Yep.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 5:59Speaker 1: My girlfriend has four babies. She just posted a picture
- 6:02Speaker 1: reading a book with her newborn. I'm like, Allie, where
- 6:05Speaker 1: are the other three? Like, what's happening? I have a
- 6:08Speaker 1: hard enough time reading with Gigi around the house right now.
- 6:12Speaker 1: So I don't know if I'm reading anytime soon. But
- 6:15Speaker 1: are you feeling good? I mean... one more. Of course,
- 6:18Speaker 1: it's exciting, but it does shift the dynamic between Harper
- 6:22Speaker 1: being your only one.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Yeah, we're savoring the family of three currently. Yeah, it's
- 6:26Speaker 2: a little weird. I mean, this pregnancy flew by just
- 6:29Speaker 2: because I think you've got a toddler running around and
- 6:33Speaker 2: you're just busy. But yeah, no, look, our podcast, whatever
- 6:37Speaker 2: it takes, you just adapt and you figure it out
- 6:40Speaker 2: and I'm looking forward to it. I think it'll be
- 6:43Speaker 2: really cool and we're going to be in the newborn
- 6:45Speaker 2: stage very soon enough.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Did you like the newborn stage? Because I think some
- 6:51Speaker 1: people are very like opinionated about it. I frankly don't
- 6:54Speaker 1: remember a lot of it. I think that's by design.
- 6:57Speaker 1: They don't want you to remember.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I think because it was such a tough journey that
- 7:03Speaker 2: I appreciated every moment and.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I loved it.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I feel like I've been so present as a mom,
- 7:12Speaker 2: more so than in my career. I think it's so
- 7:15Speaker 2: hard to be present and sort of have that balance.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And so, yeah, a lot of people would like, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 2: I would love to skip over the newborn phase, but
- 7:26Speaker 2: I loved it. I tried to savor every moment because
- 7:28Speaker 2: everybody tells you it goes by so quickly. So I
- 7:32Speaker 2: just tried to appreciate every moment, you know, not complain,
- 7:35Speaker 2: not get upset and just embrace it all.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so true. You liked it though? No, I'm
- 7:42Speaker 1: kind of like you. It's just not in my nature
- 7:44Speaker 1: to be that negative of a person. I think, of course,
- 7:46Speaker 1: there's challenges with a newborn phase and not sleeping a lot.
- 7:51Speaker 1: But I, like you, like you appreciate it. And I
- 7:55Speaker 1: think because you and I travel and I think, you know,
- 7:59Speaker 1: I'm on the road more at times, but I think
- 8:02Speaker 1: I so value time home. And that's kind of what
- 8:05Speaker 1: we wanted to get into, the work-life balance. It's crazy.
- 8:08Speaker 1: when you say to someone, yeah, I just worked a
- 8:10Speaker 1: World Cup and I was away from my family, but
- 8:12Speaker 1: at the end of the day, I'm home all of August, right?
- 8:14Speaker 1: So that's also a crazy luxury that I have busy
- 8:18Speaker 1: seasons and we both have that and trying to balance
- 8:23Speaker 1: it all. I don't know if that really is a
- 8:25Speaker 1: real thing, but when you think about work-life balance, what
- 8:30Speaker 1: does come to mind for you, Carly, and how you've
- 8:33Speaker 1: been able to be so present as a mom? Because
- 8:34Speaker 1: I see that in you and, you know, you're valuing
- 8:37Speaker 1: home so, so much. And I so appreciate and respect
- 8:39Speaker 1: that about you because it is such a priority.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah, it's something I've been, I feel like pondering a
- 8:48Speaker 2: lot post-retirement because especially being inducted into the National Soccer
- 8:53Speaker 2: Hall of Fame, I had to write my speech and
- 8:57Speaker 2: I would spend, you know, days running and thinking about it. And,
- 9:01Speaker 2: you know, I actually had a ton of people ask me,
- 9:04Speaker 2: you know, how did you how did you write that
- 9:07Speaker 2: speech of, you know, just was it all worth it?
- 9:10Speaker 2: That was kind of my theme, you know, giving up
- 9:13Speaker 2: and sacrificing and putting my career ahead of every single
- 9:18Speaker 2: thing in my life. And I don't know. And I'd
- 9:21Speaker 2: be curious, like, I don't know that I could have
- 9:23Speaker 2: been any other way and still been at the level
- 9:27Speaker 2: that I wanted to be at. I mean, I look
- 9:29Speaker 2: at a Tom Brady. I feel like he was pretty similar.
- 9:33Speaker 2: You look at, you.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Know, Kobe Bryant. Same thing.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I mean, currently, maybe Scotty Scheffler. Yeah. To me, maybe
- 9:44Speaker 2: seems like he's got the whole work life balance down.
- 9:49Speaker 2: He does. I did not have balance in my career.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I was to the complete extreme of doing anything and everything.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And I mean, bless Brian. I mean, I don't know
- 10:02Speaker 2: that I could have been that person to him if
- 10:07Speaker 2: the roles were reversed. I mean, to stay that patient,
- 10:10Speaker 2: to have me be away for that long, to training
- 10:16Speaker 2: at night, training at morning. I mean, I just think
- 10:19Speaker 2: every thought that I had consumed my mind and my
- 10:22Speaker 2: world for 17 long years. And there was no off
- 10:26Speaker 2: switch that I had. And now I've shifted into this
- 10:30Speaker 2: whole other world as a mom. And I feel like,
- 10:35Speaker 2: I mean, do we ever really get the balance right?
- 10:37Speaker 2: I don't think so. But I feel like the balance
- 10:40Speaker 2: I have and I'm able to have because of the
- 10:43Speaker 2: career that I had and what I put into that.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I'm now afforded with the opportunity to pick and choose
- 10:49Speaker 2: what I want to do and be home and be present.
- 10:52Speaker 2: So yeah, just be a different wife, which is kind
- 10:57Speaker 2: of crazy to me.
- 10:58Speaker 1: I have so many follows on that statement, though, that
- 11:00Speaker 1: you said you couldn't do it for Brian, but Brian
- 11:02Speaker 1: was able to do it for you, which is pretty unbelievable, right?
- 11:06Speaker 1: I mean, do you remember when it shifted where you
- 11:09Speaker 1: were like, all right, I'm good? Was it retirement? And
- 11:12Speaker 1: you were like, all right, I'm not this Because I
- 11:14Speaker 1: don't want to... You said you were selfish in the
- 11:16Speaker 1: way you were training, but you had a plan and
- 11:18Speaker 1: he supported you. How did you know he was going
- 11:20Speaker 1: to be able to support you that whole time too?
- 11:22Speaker 1: And how was he not frustrated with it? That's really special.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I mean, you think of like 2015 World Cup, he
- 11:29Speaker 2: didn't come. He had the opportunity to come to the final,
- 11:32Speaker 2: but we were getting married in 2016 and he was
- 11:35Speaker 2: afraid that if he came and we didn't win, like
- 11:39Speaker 2: that would affect... So he didn't come because I was
- 11:45Speaker 2: so uber focused.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I didn't know that's why he didn't come. I thought
- 11:50Speaker 1: he had a work conflict.
- 11:52Speaker 2: No, he was just like, you know, I just I
- 11:55Speaker 2: don't I don't want to come. And then if they
- 11:58Speaker 2: don't win, you know, it just would be not not
- 12:02Speaker 2: a good thing, I guess. But our love has just
- 12:04Speaker 2: been so strong for one another over the years. We've
- 12:07Speaker 2: been high school sweethearts. We've pretty much tackled so many
- 12:12Speaker 2: different phases of life. I mean, he was 15, I
- 12:15Speaker 2: was 17 when we started dating, broke up a few times,
- 12:19Speaker 2: had some detours along the way, but no, he's just,
- 12:23Speaker 2: he's such an amazing guy. And now I feel as
- 12:28Speaker 2: if I'm able to be the wife that I can be, present,
- 12:33Speaker 2: fully present, and not have to worry about in the
- 12:36Speaker 2: back of my mind, okay, I got to wake up at,
- 12:39Speaker 2: you know, what time tomorrow? I've got to run. I've
- 12:41Speaker 2: got to do this. I've got to do that. There's
- 12:43Speaker 2: other things that obviously, you know, are on my list
- 12:48Speaker 2: of things to do, but it's nowhere near where.
- 12:51Speaker 1: It had to be.
- 12:52Speaker 2: And so, yeah, it's, I think the balance now I'm
- 12:57Speaker 2: trying to get right. And I think that that kind
- 12:59Speaker 2: of came after retirement and maybe, maybe the last few years,
- 13:03Speaker 2: I think Harper, Harper definitely changed that for me is
- 13:06Speaker 2: just being fully present and you know, not worrying about
- 13:11Speaker 2: things that, I don't know, the wash, the dishes, you know,
- 13:14Speaker 2: things that just aren't that imminent. But your schedule, like
- 13:19Speaker 2: my schedules, it's kind of different now. You know, I've
- 13:22Speaker 2: worked a month of World Cup, but you've got World Cup,
- 13:25Speaker 2: you've got college football. You've got a lot of things
- 13:30Speaker 2: throughout the year.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I mean, I don't say no well. I think the
- 13:35Speaker 1: harder part is I enjoy what I do, right? So
- 13:37Speaker 1: it's hard for me to turn down any opportunity that
- 13:40Speaker 1: could open a door because I always tell people too,
- 13:42Speaker 1: like you just never say no. You just never say
- 13:45Speaker 1: no because you don't know who's going to be, you know,
- 13:48Speaker 1: on the other side of something. But I recently did
- 13:52Speaker 1: say no to a speaking appearance. Someone asked me to
- 13:55Speaker 1: go talk at an NFL team. And I was just like,
- 13:58Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't think that's right. Like I
- 14:00Speaker 1: need to be with Gigi the whole month of August.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Right.
- 14:03Speaker 1: And I having the confidence to say no to something
- 14:06Speaker 1: like that, was good for me. And I'm still learning.
- 14:09Speaker 1: I also very much enjoy the, the adrenaline of what we're,
- 14:15Speaker 1: what we do. I think I thrive on that. I
- 14:17Speaker 1: don't know if I'd be great if I wasn't working,
- 14:19Speaker 1: you know, on my own, but I have a husband
- 14:21Speaker 1: who's also super supportive, who did play professional hockey. So
- 14:26Speaker 1: he and I have almost shifted in a really beautiful
- 14:29Speaker 1: way where he had a career that he was focusing on.
- 14:32Speaker 1: I was working in LA and, focusing on myself, but
- 14:35Speaker 1: also trying to grow as a broadcaster. And we just
- 14:38Speaker 1: supported each other from afar. And now he's able to
- 14:41Speaker 1: be a little bit more with Gigi when I'm traveling.
- 14:43Speaker 1: And the balance is so special. It's not easy for
- 14:46Speaker 1: a single parent, whether you're mom or dad, to be
- 14:48Speaker 1: home with a baby or, you know, one to two, whatever,
- 14:51Speaker 1: how many kids you have. it's hard when I'm solo
- 14:54Speaker 1: with Gigi. It's just nice to have a support system.
- 14:56Speaker 1: So I give him a lot of credit for being
- 14:58Speaker 1: able to be one, my biggest fan and two, able
- 15:01Speaker 1: to support me along the way. But yeah, I can,
- 15:03Speaker 1: I could be more present too. I think it's as
- 15:06Speaker 1: simple as we've been trying to leave our phones like
- 15:09Speaker 1: on the kitchen counter and we're, because I don't want Gigi,
- 15:12Speaker 1: and I know still so much younger, but I don't
- 15:14Speaker 1: want Gigi to visually see me on my phone. Like
- 15:17Speaker 1: little things like that, like turning off social media in
- 15:21Speaker 1: a way that's, normal where we're just, we're consciously trying
- 15:25Speaker 1: to have dinner together at night and we are making
- 15:28Speaker 1: that a family event. And it's not just all of
- 15:30Speaker 1: us eating at different times, like just little family things
- 15:33Speaker 1: to keep a unit strong. I've been trying to bring
- 15:35Speaker 1: into a work-life balance, but I'm crazy. I love traveling.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Like I tried to get my husband to go away.
- 15:40Speaker 1: We went to Nantucket two weeks ago. Yeah, I know.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Didn't you go straight from the final? Yes, I was.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Pretty much? I was a disaster when I got there
- 15:48Speaker 1: for three days. I was more so just exhausted, but
- 15:52Speaker 1: so happy to be off. But I tried to get
- 15:54Speaker 1: him to go back because I do somewhat thrive off
- 15:57Speaker 1: of being on the go and experiences and travel. My
- 16:01Speaker 1: mom was a flight attendant growing up, so we traveled
- 16:03Speaker 1: all the time. I very much enjoy that. I think
- 16:07Speaker 1: if I didn't enjoy traveling, what I do would not
- 16:10Speaker 1: be that fun.
- 16:11Speaker 2: So you're home this whole month of August.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Yeah. No plans. I take that back. We're going to
- 16:16Speaker 1: go to Minnesota. But that's to see my parents. That
- 16:19Speaker 1: feels different. That's where grandma grew up.
- 16:21Speaker 2: So how does it feel daily? Feels great. Just being home.
- 16:24Speaker 1: It feels great, but I have my suitcases right here.
- 16:28Speaker 1: I'm just ready to go.
- 16:29Speaker 2: At the drop of a hat, if somebody emails your
- 16:32Speaker 2: agent and calls you and says.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Hey, I need you here. There is a level of
- 16:37Speaker 1: that that's hard for me, but I also so appreciate
- 16:42Speaker 1: the time that I have with Gigi and the time
- 16:45Speaker 1: we can have before school starts for her and football season.
- 16:49Speaker 1: My first game is September 5th, which is Also my birthday.
- 16:53Speaker 1: So where else would I want to be than Bloomington, Indiana?
- 16:55Speaker 1: A big one. You should come out to a game.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I know. I've had Rob tell me to come out
- 17:03Speaker 2: to some games. And unlike you, if I don't have
- 17:08Speaker 2: to travel, I'm like, I don't want to travel.
- 17:10Speaker 1: You're also going to be very busy in September. So
- 17:13Speaker 1: we're going to hold on the big noon kickoff hangout
- 17:15Speaker 1: until after baby number two.
- 17:17Speaker 2: At some point.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Soon enough. I think what would be fun, too, if
- 17:21Speaker 1: we at one point had someone on the pod who's
- 17:23Speaker 1: an expert in, like, the work-life balance or, you know,
- 17:27Speaker 1: someone who, a therapist who gives advice on doing it all.
- 17:30Speaker 1: I think that'd be fascinating because I'm still learning this.
- 17:32Speaker 1: It's not perfect by any means.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Totally. And I don't think there's one right way of
- 17:38Speaker 2: doing something. Like, I don't think everybody could have approached
- 17:42Speaker 2: their profession or career the way that I did, right?
- 17:46Speaker 1: And you just had such a commitment to it, to
- 17:49Speaker 1: your craft, to your success. It's so inspiring because I
- 17:52Speaker 1: don't know if I, if you said and made me
- 17:54Speaker 1: wake up every day and train the way you trained,
- 17:56Speaker 1: I don't think it has the same end goal result.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Like you had that, that extra switch, which so few
- 18:03Speaker 1: athletes have. Yeah. Yeah. Well, Kobe, I love the Scotty example,
- 18:08Speaker 1: but I haven't, I can't think of who else in
- 18:10Speaker 1: my experience had that. And I'm going to think about
- 18:12Speaker 1: that and get back to you on others.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, this might be a good time for a
- 18:18Speaker 2: little break and we can come back and talk a
- 18:23Speaker 2: little bit more about whatever it takes, the ethos, the
- 18:27Speaker 2: trade-offs in life. Yeah, get talking to some more stuff.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Welcome back to Whatever It Takes, with Carly Lloyd and
- 18:45Speaker 2: Jenny Taft. This has been fun. I've been enjoying this
- 18:50Speaker 2: chat with you, Jenny. Just the balance of life. And
- 18:55Speaker 2: now as we kind of shift gears a little bit,
- 18:59Speaker 2: I feel like having a child changed my viewpoint on this.
- 19:04Speaker 2: And I don't know if you can relate a little bit,
- 19:05Speaker 2: but since I played on the national team, I would have,
- 19:12Speaker 2: very short windows of time that I would come home.
- 19:15Speaker 2: And I would always have a list of things I
- 19:17Speaker 2: got to get done. I got to do this. I
- 19:18Speaker 2: got to do that. You know, I'm type A. So
- 19:21Speaker 2: I'm like, I got to get all this done in
- 19:23Speaker 2: one shot. Having had Harper, that changed my perspective a
- 19:27Speaker 2: little bit of just certain things are not a priority.
- 19:31Speaker 2: And I want to be present in that particular moment
- 19:34Speaker 2: of time. The dishes can wait. The wash can wait.
- 19:38Speaker 2: But I don't know if you've had to get better
- 19:40Speaker 2: at this. I've had to get better at this. And
- 19:42Speaker 2: it does kind of make life a bit less stressful
- 19:47Speaker 2: because I feel like we're always going to have stuff
- 19:50Speaker 2: to do. There's always a list. I'm like, that will
- 19:52Speaker 2: be forever.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I'm looking at my list right now.
- 19:57Speaker 2: And you still, do you still physically.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Write your lists out? It's a new thing I'm trying because. Oh,
- 20:02Speaker 1: I love it.
- 20:03Speaker 2: I physically do it.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I found that I put the list on my phone.
- 20:07Speaker 1: There's a little cheesy shot. And I wasn't crossing things
- 20:11Speaker 1: off the list on my phone. So this is new.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I got this for the World Cup. And weird, none
- 20:18Speaker 1: of these things. New nanny has not been found. Thank
- 20:21Speaker 1: you notes have not been written.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Now, with your to-do lists, are you just busy with
- 20:27Speaker 2: other things that you can't? get some of these things done?
- 20:31Speaker 2: Or is it not a priority?
- 20:32Speaker 1: I mean, I'm a little bit like you. I would
- 20:36Speaker 1: call myself type A with like so many type B qualities,
- 20:41Speaker 1: which is weird. I'm a Virgo. So there's a level
- 20:43Speaker 1: of me that I'm very type A with work. I'm
- 20:46Speaker 1: never going to go into something unprepared. I will cram.
- 20:50Speaker 1: I will stay up late if I need to. I
- 20:52Speaker 1: will wake up early if I need to. I'm type
- 20:54Speaker 1: A in that. And I'm type A in the way
- 20:56Speaker 1: I think I got to this point, but there is
- 20:59Speaker 1: a level of like security and confidence and we're doing it.
- 21:03Speaker 1: We're figuring it out. And I do love to just
- 21:04Speaker 1: be with Gigi and be present. And if the house
- 21:07Speaker 1: gets messy, it gets messy. That's the point. Like we
- 21:10Speaker 1: were painting yesterday and I had this huge, this like,
- 21:16Speaker 1: which is fun, you should get for Harper, just like
- 21:17Speaker 1: a roll of paper, but it's sticky on the bottom.
- 21:19Speaker 1: So we just laid it out on the floor and
- 21:22Speaker 1: we were just painting. Like it's kind of chaotic. And
- 21:24Speaker 1: you know what else has shifted in me, which I'm
- 21:26Speaker 1: curious your thoughts. I work out less, which is weird
- 21:31Speaker 1: because I like working out. I do. But if I'm tired,
- 21:35Speaker 1: like going to squeeze in a HIIT workout class, which
- 21:38Speaker 1: I used to always just say I had to do something,
- 21:41Speaker 1: my mindset towards a workout class is different. If I'm tired,
- 21:45Speaker 1: it doesn't feel the same. I mean, I still, of course,
- 21:47Speaker 1: I like working out. I worked out twice this week.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I'll do something tomorrow. So maybe three times a week,
- 21:52Speaker 1: but I'm just not running every day It's just different.
- 21:57Speaker 1: Like if I'm tired, my body needs rest. And that's
- 22:00Speaker 1: been different, which I never used to be easy on myself.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Was it post-World Cup, you think?
- 22:07Speaker 1: Well, the World Cup I would work out, but we
- 22:09Speaker 1: were just busy. Like it's more so working out sometimes
- 22:11Speaker 1: was just me going on a long walk. So I
- 22:15Speaker 1: don't mean workout like I'm pushing it to the limit.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Like maybe I would have trained harder when I was younger,
- 22:21Speaker 1: but it's more the mental break, which I think is
- 22:23Speaker 1: still very important. But are you like... you used to
- 22:26Speaker 1: be the most intense training person I've ever seen. But
- 22:29Speaker 1: while pregnant, you've approached it very differently.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I have not worked out besides doing Pilates a couple
- 22:36Speaker 2: times a week. But obviously with my travels and World Cup,
- 22:39Speaker 2: I had to kind of put a hold on that.
- 22:43Speaker 2: And then I've just been this, you know, last few
- 22:47Speaker 2: bits of the pregnancy have just been, I've been just
- 22:49Speaker 2: really tired. So it's been, it's been hard to get
- 22:52Speaker 2: back into it. But No, first pregnancy, obviously, you know,
- 22:56Speaker 2: probably a lot of people know my journey of IVF
- 22:59Speaker 2: and going through all that and just how long it
- 23:02Speaker 2: took and how sacred I just wanted to have that
- 23:07Speaker 2: pregnancy and not really like I didn't need to push
- 23:11Speaker 2: my body. I pushed my body for 17 some years
- 23:14Speaker 2: and it was hard enough. I thought I was always
- 23:16Speaker 2: going to be somebody that never had an issue working out.
- 23:20Speaker 2: I remember some of the younger players on the team,
- 23:23Speaker 2: when I was close to retiring, we were in the
- 23:25Speaker 2: ice bath together. It was like Sam Mewis, Rose LaBelle,
- 23:28Speaker 2: and Emily Sonnet. They're like, are you going to keep
- 23:33Speaker 2: working out the way that you do? And I'm like, yes, absolutely.
- 23:37Speaker 2: And I retired, and then I gave myself some time off.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Clearly not enough. I tried to go back out for
- 23:45Speaker 2: a run, and I'm like, my gosh, this is so hard.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Now I know what every human being that does not
- 23:54Speaker 2: play a professional sport where you have to work out
- 23:56Speaker 2: feels like. It's really hard. It's hard to not have
- 24:00Speaker 2: a goal, to not have to be like motivated or
- 24:03Speaker 2: to not have to do it for a living.
- 24:05Speaker 1: So it was hard.
- 24:07Speaker 2: And then, you know, obviously going through the IVF and
- 24:11Speaker 2: all the retrievals and, you know, working out, not working out,
- 24:14Speaker 2: the start, the stop.
- 24:16Speaker 1: It was hard.
- 24:17Speaker 2: And then I just said to myself, you know, there's
- 24:19Speaker 2: just no point of working out. I don't need to
- 24:21Speaker 2: work out during the pregnancy. And then after I had
- 24:24Speaker 2: Harper in October, I was playing at TST with Heather
- 24:30Speaker 2: Riley's team and the U.S. woman. And that jump started
- 24:35Speaker 2: me and gave me a bit of more of a
- 24:36Speaker 2: goal to work out at that particular time. And it
- 24:41Speaker 2: suddenly felt like fun again I wasn't doing anything crazy
- 24:45Speaker 2: maybe three days a week doing some running and and
- 24:49Speaker 2: various stuff played on a co-ed soccer team which was
- 24:54Speaker 2: hilarious and then this pregnancy haven't really worked out either
- 24:57Speaker 2: but I'm looking forward to getting myself in shape after
- 25:01Speaker 2: this pregnancy but it's like.
- 25:03Speaker 1: You are a goal-oriented person in the way that working
- 25:08Speaker 1: out had to have a goal maybe It seems to be, yeah.
- 25:13Speaker 1: And when your goal was to have a baby, have babies,
- 25:16Speaker 1: the goal shifted, which I think it... But I think
- 25:18Speaker 1: that's really actually special to hear because the priority was
- 25:22Speaker 1: not you.
- 25:26Speaker 2: No, no. And I am type A, type A, you know,
- 25:30Speaker 2: not type A, type B. Not my list that's unchecked.
- 25:34Speaker 2: So for me to... I guess just kind of like
- 25:39Speaker 2: breathe a little bit more and be present. Like I said,
- 25:42Speaker 2: I will sit here with Harper. Harper is on the go.
- 25:46Speaker 2: She does not stop from the moment she gets up
- 25:49Speaker 2: till her nap. Then when she wakes up from her
- 25:52Speaker 2: nap till bedtime.
- 25:54Speaker 1: So a lot of.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Times I'm like, I don't even know what I did
- 25:57Speaker 2: with my day except for sit here with her, play
- 26:02Speaker 2: with her. But yeah, I mean, I wouldn't want it
- 26:05Speaker 2: any other way. So it's, It's weird to be able to,
- 26:09Speaker 2: I guess, have changed that aspect of my life of just,
- 26:14Speaker 2: you know, if it's not a priority, I'm okay with that.
- 26:19Speaker 1: But that's pretty wild to me that you've gone from
- 26:21Speaker 1: the most type A person I've ever seen too, being like,
- 26:27Speaker 1: I'm just going with the flow. That's what you told
- 26:29Speaker 1: me the whole World Cup. I'm like, Carly, I am
- 26:31Speaker 1: not going with the flow right now. I am stressed.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Hey, I was trying to tell Clint Dempsey, too, to
- 26:35Speaker 2: go with the flow.
- 26:37Speaker 1: He didn't go with the flow. You need to remind
- 26:41Speaker 1: him of that at times.
- 26:42Speaker 2: I know.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Actually, he might be an athlete that has that switch.
- 26:46Speaker 1: You asked me who else. He counts in that way, right? Yeah.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Bring him on the pod. He can defend himself. I
- 26:54Speaker 1: feel like what is so cool though about the reminder
- 26:59Speaker 1: is that you can you can do both like you
- 27:01Speaker 1: can be type a still and still also say we
- 27:04Speaker 1: can do it tomorrow we can finish the list tomorrow
- 27:07Speaker 1: and look like there's always going to be something to
- 27:11Speaker 1: do like you said life is never going to not
- 27:13Speaker 1: be busy there's always stuff but what's the priority and
- 27:15Speaker 1: what's the focus and the time with harper you have
- 27:18Speaker 1: right now is so sacred it's never going to have
- 27:21Speaker 1: this one-on-one time like you have right now i.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Know I just look at my career and you talk
- 27:27Speaker 2: about a World Cup, how quickly a World Cup's over with.
- 27:31Speaker 2: And you've seen it with Gigi. I mean, I guess
- 27:34Speaker 2: not that I don't want to make the same mistake,
- 27:37Speaker 2: but I want to be more present now here with her.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Turning 40, after 40, I feel like your whole life
- 27:43Speaker 2: perspective changed, at least mine did. You just view things
- 27:47Speaker 2: a little bit differently. And everybody says like kids do
- 27:51Speaker 2: change you. So I'm not 40 yet. I'm I'm getting there.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I'm getting closer.
- 27:55Speaker 1: But I always think about like when we were younger
- 27:58Speaker 1: and I thought my parents or my friend's parents who
- 28:01Speaker 1: were 40, I'm like, oh my gosh, they're so old, right?
- 28:05Speaker 1: Like we're in it. 40 is different, right? Like I
- 28:08Speaker 1: used to think that was so old. But the cool
- 28:10Speaker 1: thing is the life we've lived, right? And I don't
- 28:13Speaker 1: want to have any regrets. I want to have perspective
- 28:15Speaker 1: and appreciation. And I just, I love hearing that from
- 28:18Speaker 1: you because it does matter. It does matter to like
- 28:21Speaker 1: have the perspective. On what's important in life.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Would you say the older you've gotten, and obviously Gigi's
- 28:28Speaker 2: gotten older, have you gotten a better balance of that?
- 28:35Speaker 1: I would say we've also been a little bit on
- 28:39Speaker 1: the move the last couple years because my husband's been
- 28:42Speaker 1: transitioning from he was playing, he was coaching. We've lived
- 28:45Speaker 1: a couple places in the last couple years. So I
- 28:47Speaker 1: feel like we've been a little bit in motion in
- 28:49Speaker 1: a way that we haven't settled fully. But that's okay too.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Like transitions in life are okay. Like I love the
- 28:56Speaker 1: idea that Gigi's now lived all these places and she
- 28:59Speaker 1: was born in California at the beach and now she's
- 29:02Speaker 1: a city girl in Boston and, you know, takes the
- 29:05Speaker 1: tea and takes, you know, takes the bus and we're
- 29:08Speaker 1: going to go to school on the bus next year,
- 29:10Speaker 1: which is such a fun like experience for her. I
- 29:12Speaker 1: don't know if we'll live here forever, but right now
- 29:14Speaker 1: it's a really fun place for her to just be
- 29:16Speaker 1: a young kid and seeing her explore the city is fun.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Cause I went to school in Boston and, So now
- 29:21Speaker 1: having a daughter to explore the city with is pretty fun.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Like we were at Faneuil Hall yesterday and I remember
- 29:27Speaker 1: going there in college and thinking, how lucky am I
- 29:30Speaker 1: to go to school here? So that's been a fun perspective.
- 29:32Speaker 1: But I just think that the balance in my life
- 29:36Speaker 1: comes from just making sure I always have the time,
- 29:39Speaker 1: you know, to spend with her. And, you know, we
- 29:41Speaker 1: take advantage of every time together and making sure that
- 29:45Speaker 1: we're just creating those memories with friends and family. And
- 29:48Speaker 1: you inspire me in the way that you're able to
- 29:50Speaker 1: just be that present with Harper. And like you said,
- 29:52Speaker 1: like you wanted her so much. You wanted a family
- 29:55Speaker 1: and it all is worth it in the end. And
- 29:57Speaker 1: I believe in timing and a plan. And I don't
- 30:01Speaker 1: think anything happens by accident. So hopefully Gigi will have
- 30:03Speaker 1: another sibling and you can talk me through another one. Yes.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Not today.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Yes, I believe that.
- 30:09Speaker 1: But let's hope my list gets crossed off. Well, I
- 30:13Speaker 1: feel like we should probably take a little break and
- 30:17Speaker 1: then get back to more conversation from whatever it takes.
- 30:22Speaker 1: We'll be right back.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Welcome back to Whatever It Takes with Carly Lloyd and
- 30:37Speaker 2: Jenny Taft. As we're sitting here kind of talking about
- 30:42Speaker 2: work-life balance and being present, being in the moment, there's
- 30:48Speaker 2: been some non-negotiables, I feel like, in my life that
- 30:51Speaker 2: I've been trying to kind of change. You talked about
- 30:54Speaker 2: wanting to keep your phone away from Gigi a little bit.
- 30:57Speaker 2: And I've kind of been the same, even though Harper is,
- 31:00Speaker 2: you know, just a little under two years old. I
- 31:03Speaker 2: just feel like they still get the sense of that.
- 31:08Speaker 2: And so I was wondering if there's any other things,
- 31:11Speaker 2: non-negotiables that you have currently that you're kind of trying
- 31:15Speaker 2: to get better at or change.
- 31:18Speaker 1: It sounds so silly saying it out loud, but like
- 31:20Speaker 1: getting the right amount of sleep is so crucial. And
- 31:23Speaker 1: I know that's a luxury that we don't always have, right,
- 31:27Speaker 1: with kids. But I am so aware of going to
- 31:32Speaker 1: bed because I feel like today, I feel great. I
- 31:36Speaker 1: went to bed at like 1030. Gigi's been waking up
- 31:38Speaker 1: at seven. She's staying in her bed. When you are
- 31:42Speaker 1: at that stage, Carly, I got ideas. It's hard when
- 31:46Speaker 1: they're not in their bed, they're leaving their bed. We
- 31:49Speaker 1: have a sleep fairy that occasionally visits. We have a
- 31:53Speaker 1: light in her room. It's like a red light, green light.
- 31:56Speaker 1: So she stays in her room until seven when the
- 31:58Speaker 1: green light goes on. My sister uses those too. Honestly,
- 32:01Speaker 1: for us, it's been amazing. But I just, as I've
- 32:05Speaker 1: gotten older too, I do think it just matters so much, right?
- 32:09Speaker 1: And like not being afraid to just go to bed
- 32:12Speaker 1: and try to get your rest and be smart about
- 32:15Speaker 1: what you're eating and drinking and all the things because
- 32:18Speaker 1: it all matters. And you just feel it differently as
- 32:21Speaker 1: you get older. And that's been big on us. And
- 32:24Speaker 1: just like the the TV time with her, like just
- 32:27Speaker 1: trying to be really conscious. Like, of course she watches television,
- 32:30Speaker 1: but you can tell. And I know Harper's a touch younger,
- 32:34Speaker 1: but like if Gigi's watched a long show or a
- 32:37Speaker 1: movie and it's like lots of colors and movements, you
- 32:39Speaker 1: can see her mood shifts, right? So it's, yes, we
- 32:42Speaker 1: watch television. We watch movies at times. And that's a
- 32:46Speaker 1: special thing. Like we went to see a movie recently
- 32:49Speaker 1: and at the movie theater, and it was so, so fun,
- 32:51Speaker 1: like to experience that together. I'm never someone who's going
- 32:53Speaker 1: to say no Screen time, but like still have it
- 32:56Speaker 1: be a fun, sacred thing. Sleep, less phones at home
- 33:00Speaker 1: and trying our best to take care of, you know,
- 33:03Speaker 1: the family and putting the family first, I think is
- 33:06Speaker 1: big for us. What stands out to you?
- 33:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, well, sleep. I feel like we don't
- 33:11Speaker 2: get enough of that currently and soon we'll not.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Get that much either. How's Harper sleeping? But it's all
- 33:18Speaker 1: worth it.
- 33:18Speaker 2: No, you know what? Harper's been, she's a great sleeper
- 33:21Speaker 2: from pretty much three months, We had her in her crib.
- 33:26Speaker 2: She was morphed into her sleep schedule, you know, kind
- 33:31Speaker 2: of get up in the morning and then have that
- 33:33Speaker 2: morning nap for a couple hours. And then when she
- 33:37Speaker 2: was doing two naps, she would have an afternoon nap. And,
- 33:39Speaker 2: you know, I nursed her for a year, so.
- 33:43Speaker 1: I'm so proud of you for that, by the way.
- 33:45Speaker 1: I remember us chatting during the summers. You are such
- 33:48Speaker 1: a warrior. That's really, really, a year is incredible.
- 33:51Speaker 2: I mean, I guess when you look at it like that,
- 33:53Speaker 2: I'm like, wow, yeah, it is a long time. I
- 33:55Speaker 2: feel like I just put my breast pump away and
- 33:57Speaker 2: I'm going to be getting it back out.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Bring it back out. Well, and it's like, I think
- 34:01Speaker 1: it's amazing when it works and it doesn't work for
- 34:03Speaker 1: some and that's totally fine too. But I enjoyed it for,
- 34:07Speaker 1: I did six months and I enjoyed it. It wasn't,
- 34:10Speaker 1: it was time consuming, but I'm glad we did it. And-
- 34:13Speaker 1: you know, whatever works for anyone works. But I do
- 34:17Speaker 1: feel like it's an intimate thing that you can experience.
- 34:19Speaker 1: So well done on a year. It's awesome.
- 34:21Speaker 2: I pretty much did all the feeds at night. I
- 34:24Speaker 2: have to get up anyway. I might as well get
- 34:26Speaker 2: up and go nurse her and be with her. And
- 34:28Speaker 2: then what was great about, you know, our schedules and
- 34:32Speaker 2: our lives is he was able to get her in
- 34:34Speaker 2: the morning when she would wake up and I could
- 34:36Speaker 2: sleep for a couple hours, which was massive just because
- 34:41Speaker 2: of the, you know, the broken sleep throughout the night.
- 34:44Speaker 2: But she was always a great sleeper. She still takes
- 34:46Speaker 2: like a two to three hour nap. And I'm like,
- 34:51Speaker 2: the day that she gets rid of this nap, we're
- 34:53Speaker 2: going to be.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Like, oh, it's a sad day. We really mourned the
- 34:57Speaker 1: loss of the nap because I like I told you,
- 35:00Speaker 1: I would lay down if I realized like if I
- 35:03Speaker 1: needed a second, I can lay down too. Or just
- 35:06Speaker 1: have time alone to yourself.
- 35:07Speaker 2: I know.
- 35:08Speaker 1: You're going to miss that.
- 35:09Speaker 2: I know.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Sleep.
- 35:10Speaker 2: I have prided myself on sleep.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 35:13Speaker 2: What were you sleeping when you were playing? Probably like
- 35:15Speaker 2: nine hours. As I got older, it was less and less.
- 35:18Speaker 2: But I needed, you know, I needed a good nine hours.
- 35:21Speaker 2: I would go to bed early. And, you know, that
- 35:24Speaker 2: was everything. I mean, that was performance, the way I felt.
- 35:29Speaker 2: I wasn't really, you know, a morning person. So, you know,
- 35:33Speaker 2: Brian should be very proud because he's been a morning
- 35:35Speaker 2: person for probably since high school.
- 35:38Speaker 1: I am not a morning person. I know. But I
- 35:40Speaker 1: have morphed into a morning person, clearly. Good for you. Yeah.
- 35:44Speaker 2: So I can't complain. It was like she turned a
- 35:47Speaker 2: year old. I stopped breastfeeding and then she sleeps through
- 35:51Speaker 2: the night. Yeah.
- 35:51Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, okay. Thanks.
- 35:53Speaker 2: I feel like everyone's always like, should we do something different? Like,
- 35:57Speaker 2: what aren't we doing? And it's like, you know, they're
- 36:00Speaker 2: going to sleep eventually. You just have to. Just let
- 36:04Speaker 2: it just all pan out the way it's going to
- 36:07Speaker 2: pan out.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Well, and it's like her coming into our room. It's
- 36:10Speaker 1: not ideal, but it's also like she's not going to
- 36:13Speaker 1: do this forever. And you kind of appreciate the moments
- 36:16Speaker 1: of her wanting that time or I'd been away or,
- 36:19Speaker 1: you know, I stayed in her room a little bit,
- 36:21Speaker 1: but she's back sleeping in her bed and following her
- 36:24Speaker 1: red light, green light. But I also understand that. she
- 36:29Speaker 1: missed me at the world cup. So there's going to
- 36:31Speaker 1: be a clinginess towards me right now, which at times
- 36:34Speaker 1: is even hard for my husband. Cause he's like, she
- 36:36Speaker 1: wanted me so, so much only thing when you were away.
- 36:38Speaker 1: And now when mom's home, it's a little bit more me.
- 36:40Speaker 1: So we have to, it's just kind of like getting
- 36:42Speaker 1: back into a routine, but you know, it's, it's a balance.
- 36:47Speaker 1: I've been trying to just be better.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Even when Brian and I go up to bed, like
- 36:51Speaker 2: just putting the phone down and, and just, I know we're,
- 36:55Speaker 2: you know, we're both tired, but let's, Let's chat. Let's
- 36:58Speaker 2: catch up. You know, Harper's sleeping and so that. And
- 37:03Speaker 2: I mean, as Harper gets older and obviously we have
- 37:06Speaker 2: another one on the way. I mean, family dinners has
- 37:09Speaker 2: always kind of been a big thing for my family
- 37:12Speaker 2: growing up. I think that that's still going to be
- 37:15Speaker 2: a really important thing is that the four of us.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Oh, I love them. They were big for us, too.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Were they?
- 37:22Speaker 1: I didn't even appreciate it.
- 37:23Speaker 2: And I'm sure now with Gigi, like, she probably talks
- 37:25Speaker 2: and shares things.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Even last night, like, we had a show on or something.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Because we had been running around, and so we did
- 37:33Speaker 1: not sit at our table. We were all just kind
- 37:34Speaker 1: of eating at different times. And I even said to Matt,
- 37:37Speaker 1: I was like, I don't love this. Like, it needs
- 37:39Speaker 1: to be a priority that we're sitting and we're saying
- 37:41Speaker 1: grace and we're together. And that's what— I like that. I
- 37:46Speaker 1: remember that from my childhood as a special time that
- 37:49Speaker 1: we all— Even though we had sports, we were still
- 37:51Speaker 1: finding a time, not every day of the week, but
- 37:55Speaker 1: we were together. And I think it's important.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I feel like today's day and age,
- 38:00Speaker 2: families are, you know, eating in the car and running off,
- 38:04Speaker 2: you know, depending on how many kids you have, which
- 38:06Speaker 2: I get, it's probably insane, but I think it's just, yeah,
- 38:11Speaker 2: it's important. And we'll definitely want to do that. But yeah,
- 38:15Speaker 2: the phones, you know, just trying to kind of limit
- 38:17Speaker 2: the amount of time and maybe eventually, you know, working
- 38:21Speaker 2: out post-pregnancy for me, try to get myself back into
- 38:24Speaker 2: some shape.
- 38:25Speaker 1: I mean, you just got to have a goal. What
- 38:27Speaker 1: are you training for?
- 38:29Speaker 2: I need to play TST again.
- 38:31Speaker 1: That's what I was thinking. Did you enjoy it, though,
- 38:34Speaker 1: when you were playing again in that way?
- 38:36Speaker 2: When I retired... I was so ready. Mentally, physically, I
- 38:39Speaker 2: was completely done. And I think I didn't, it's not
- 38:45Speaker 2: like I hated the sport. You know, I didn't leave
- 38:47Speaker 2: hating the sport. I left feeling fulfilled and just ready
- 38:53Speaker 2: to move on. And I started, you know, doing other
- 38:56Speaker 2: things and traveling and just living life, as crazy as
- 39:01Speaker 2: that may sound, having some drinks and letting loose and
- 39:06Speaker 2: eating whatever. And then as time kind of went on,
- 39:11Speaker 2: then I started getting into golf. So I was golfing
- 39:13Speaker 2: a bit more. And then TST came and I was like, wow,
- 39:19Speaker 2: this just... Actually, I had a high school friend ask
- 39:24Speaker 2: me to play in this co-ed league for soccer. That
- 39:28Speaker 2: was actually the first thing.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:30Speaker 2: And I'm like, oh, it feels so good to be
- 39:33Speaker 2: back out here. The quality of play was, you know,
- 39:35Speaker 2: not great. They were happy to have you. There was
- 39:39Speaker 2: probably an injury each week. Yeah. And when I walked
- 39:43Speaker 2: through the doors, everybody was like, is that really Carly Lloyd?
- 39:47Speaker 1: Carly is here. High school pickup league. I love that, though.
- 39:51Speaker 2: The love is always there. But yeah, that just kind
- 39:53Speaker 2: of reinvigorated my love and passion again. And then playing TST,
- 39:58Speaker 2: I mean, it was so fun. It was the first
- 40:00Speaker 2: time I had felt like I had fun since, you know,
- 40:04Speaker 2: my club days, which was awesome.
- 40:06Speaker 1: That's really refreshing to hear.
- 40:08Speaker 2: I love it. There's no pressure. You're just playing. There's
- 40:10Speaker 2: no coaches. Yeah, it was it was a good time.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Got to play with, you know, Allie Krieger and Heather
- 40:16Speaker 2: O'Reilly again, Allie Long, you know, some other players that
- 40:20Speaker 2: I played with. So that was that was a good time.
- 40:22Speaker 1: I feel like Heather O'Reilly is one of those moms
- 40:25Speaker 1: who she always blew me away.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Like she had her kids.
- 40:28Speaker 1: And funny enough, I was working with her at Fox
- 40:32Speaker 1: and I was pregnant like early on and I hadn't
- 40:35Speaker 1: really told anyone. But I was so excited to tell
- 40:37Speaker 1: her because I felt like she was one of those
- 40:38Speaker 1: moms that just like figured it out. And then she
- 40:40Speaker 1: had a kid and then she was back and she
- 40:42Speaker 1: was training and she still is like that. She's so inspiring.
- 40:45Speaker 1: She's probably still running. Faster than anyone I've ever seen.
- 40:48Speaker 1: But she just, like, found a way. And I always
- 40:50Speaker 1: really respected that about her. And I just remember telling her.
- 40:53Speaker 1: And this, like, community of support from that whole group
- 40:56Speaker 1: of women. Like, that's why I love your era so much.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Because we were all kind of the same age.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it was cool. And Heather, in particular, she's
- 41:04Speaker 2: exactly that. I feel like she just.
- 41:07Speaker 2: She just gets it done, no matter what. She figures
- 41:10Speaker 2: it out. I mean, it's pretty incredible. I remember her,
- 41:14Speaker 2: you know, because... She was asking me about playing in
- 41:16Speaker 2: TST and I had to tell her early on that
- 41:18Speaker 2: I was pregnant.
- 41:20Speaker 1: And I remember her.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Telling me that, you know, this is going to be
- 41:24Speaker 2: the greatest. We've obviously accomplished a whole lot in our career.
- 41:29Speaker 2: But she's like, this is going to be the greatest
- 41:31Speaker 2: thing that you've ever accomplished. You know, when you don't
- 41:34Speaker 2: have a kid yet, you're like, yeah, yeah. But then
- 41:38Speaker 2: I'm like, it's so true.
- 41:40Speaker 1: That makes me want to cry.
- 41:41Speaker 2: That's so true. Yeah.
- 41:42Speaker 1: It's pretty amazing. Like, what were we also doing before? Like,
- 41:44Speaker 1: when we thought we were busy? Well, you were busy training.
- 41:48Speaker 2: I know.
- 41:49Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, my gosh. What were we doing?
- 41:51Speaker 2: All the time in the world. I watched, binge watched,
- 41:54Speaker 2: you know, season after season of shows. And now our
- 41:57Speaker 2: lives are, you know, this and pretty crazy and probably
- 42:01Speaker 2: a little bit more crazier than I am.
- 42:03Speaker 1: No.
- 42:03Speaker 2: It's all... Do you guys have help, though? You've got
- 42:06Speaker 2: the nanny.
- 42:07Speaker 1: We do have a nanny, and I think, yes, like,
- 42:09Speaker 1: of course we need help. In my mind, the more
- 42:12Speaker 1: people that love and support Gigi, the better, right? I mean,
- 42:15Speaker 1: my parents will help. My parents will fly in. She's
- 42:17Speaker 1: gone to my in-laws in New York. The more, the merrier, right?
- 42:22Speaker 1: But it also is, you know, it's not for everyone,
- 42:26Speaker 1: and I totally get that, but I've found that for
- 42:29Speaker 1: our family dynamic, like, I really love having someone else.
- 42:32Speaker 1: We've now had maybe... four different nanny it's like one
- 42:36Speaker 1: a year I guess since Gigi was born I had
- 42:38Speaker 1: two nannies that lived with us at one point which
- 42:39Speaker 1: is a different dynamic but I didn't mind it I
- 42:42Speaker 1: thought it was kind of nice to have someone in
- 42:43Speaker 1: my home I always felt safe to have someone else
- 42:46Speaker 1: if if my husband was traveling if Matt was away
- 42:48Speaker 1: so anyways I've had kind of both but I just
- 42:51Speaker 1: think it's the more love any kid can have the
- 42:54Speaker 1: better and and she loves her relationship with her nannies
- 42:58Speaker 1: like it's it's been cool to see that evolve and
- 43:00Speaker 1: you know have that a part of our family too
- 43:02Speaker 1: do you guys have someone It helps you guys?
- 43:04Speaker 2: No, no.
- 43:05Speaker 1: So we're- You haven't needed it. We're just full time.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:08Speaker 1: I know.
- 43:08Speaker 2: I've had a lot of people ask me, did you
- 43:10Speaker 2: have a night nurse? I'm like, no, I did all
- 43:13Speaker 2: of it for a year and- I'm impressed. Wouldn't change
- 43:16Speaker 2: it for the world. I mean, now our lives offer
- 43:20Speaker 2: that up. We're able to do this. I mean, if
- 43:23Speaker 2: we had nine to five jobs and traveling and doing
- 43:27Speaker 2: all that, then, you know, way different story. But, yeah,
- 43:31Speaker 2: we do it all. And we've got my parents and
- 43:35Speaker 2: his mom that helps. We want, like, our parents to,
- 43:40Speaker 2: it to be like a treat. You know, we don't
- 43:42Speaker 2: want it to feel like it's like they're working and they're,
- 43:46Speaker 2: you know, they've taken Harper. My parents have taken Harper
- 43:49Speaker 2: multiple times for an extended stay when she was just
- 43:53Speaker 2: two months old. Which was crazy because I'm like, you're
- 43:57Speaker 2: getting up with a newborn.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it's tiring.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Feeding and doing all the things. Yeah. But then I'm like,
- 44:02Speaker 2: I don't know what's more tiring. That. So it's either
- 44:05Speaker 2: the newborn phase where you're getting up multiple times or
- 44:10Speaker 2: this toddler phase where they just don't stop.
- 44:13Speaker 1: Non-stop. Yeah. CG does not stop moving. I tried to
- 44:17Speaker 1: bring the soccer ball out last night, like, inspired by
- 44:20Speaker 1: the World Cup, but she was like, I've got, I'm
- 44:22Speaker 1: the scooter right now. Like, I'm, this is a faster
- 44:24Speaker 1: means of transportation. Like, they do not stop. No. But
- 44:28Speaker 1: as it should, right? I'd rather her be busy and active.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess then they're in school mode at some
- 44:34Speaker 2: point and, you know, whatnot. Harper's going to, she's going
- 44:37Speaker 2: to start school in September.
- 44:39Speaker 1: Oh, good. Yay.
- 44:40Speaker 2: A couple days a week, just for a couple hours.
- 44:42Speaker 2: So I think it'll be good for her, especially when
- 44:44Speaker 2: the baby's born. But yeah, no, I think we're going
- 44:48Speaker 2: to we're going to obviously need some more hands on
- 44:50Speaker 2: deck this time around. But yeah, we always I guess
- 44:54Speaker 2: we it's just maybe more in us where we like
- 44:56Speaker 2: feel bad asking, you know.
- 44:58Speaker 1: I like what you said, like it should be a
- 45:00Speaker 1: treat still, which is, you know, my parents do help
- 45:02Speaker 1: us a lot. But I mentioned I'm going to go
- 45:03Speaker 1: to Minnesota in a week or two before I get really,
- 45:06Speaker 1: really busy. And it's because it's like I don't want
- 45:10Speaker 1: them to feel like they're always coming here to help babysit.
- 45:12Speaker 1: I want them to feel like it's fun to see
- 45:14Speaker 1: Gigi and it's just a fun trip and I want
- 45:17Speaker 1: to see Minnesota to see friends and my grandma and
- 45:20Speaker 1: a lot of reasons, but you appreciate the help and
- 45:23Speaker 1: I don't take that for granted by any means, but
- 45:26Speaker 1: I'm all for the nanny. The nanny help. I can't
- 45:29Speaker 1: say no to that. I don't know if I see
- 45:31Speaker 1: you with an au pair living in your house, Carly.
- 45:32Speaker 1: I don't feel like that's in your future. Yeah, I
- 45:35Speaker 1: don't think that that's for us. I can't imagine that.
- 45:39Speaker 2: I don't think Brian, I think Brian would shut that
- 45:41Speaker 2: down like immediately.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Like absolutely not. I'd like to think I was a
- 45:46Speaker 1: fun host, host family. I think I was good reviews,
- 45:49Speaker 1: good reviews all around, hopefully. I feel like we still
- 45:53Speaker 1: could go on all day, every day, which is good
- 45:55Speaker 1: or bad, which means we're just getting started. And I
- 45:59Speaker 1: think that we're going to remind the listeners, like, tell
- 46:02Speaker 1: us what you guys want to hear and talk about
- 46:04Speaker 1: and what your whatever it takes moment means.
- 46:06Speaker 2: And it would be great if Some of the listeners
- 46:10Speaker 2: could share some of their current non-negotiables. This has been
- 46:13Speaker 2: a blast.
- 46:14Speaker 1: So much fun. So subscribe, review, follow on social. And
- 46:19Speaker 1: thank you for listening to Whatever It Takes.
