- 3:00Speaker 2: annoyed by a blackmailer, mister Fender. Precisely. Girl will worked
- 3:04Speaker 2: here until last Saturday night is trying to shake me
- 3:06Speaker 2: down for a lot of money. You were involved with her,
- 3:09Speaker 2: of course, not nothing of the sort. And what's the trouble?
- 3:12Speaker 2: Our fashion designs are being stolen?
- 3:15Speaker 4: Oh, you mean that the clothes sold in the fen
- 3:17Speaker 4: Rest store are exclusive?
- 3:18Speaker 2: A great many of them are miss boone. Two years
- 3:21Speaker 2: ago I hired Jerry Barfett, one of the best dressed
- 3:23Speaker 2: designers in the business, to create designs exclusively for the
- 3:26Speaker 2: Fener's store.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Well, I knew Fenrist models couldn't be brought anywhere else
- 3:30Speaker 3: in town.
- 3:30Speaker 2: But that's the point. They can be now. Oh the
- 3:33Speaker 2: cut great stores have our exclusive styles that Mark John
- 3:36Speaker 2: prices before we even put them on failure. That can't
- 3:38Speaker 2: be very profitable. Profitable we've loss of fortunes. And this
- 3:42Speaker 2: girl says she knows how our fashions are being pirated
- 3:45Speaker 2: and who's responsible for.
- 3:46Speaker 3: It, and she won't tell you who it is.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Tell me she has a gold asked twenty five hundred
- 3:51Speaker 2: dollars for the information, And you want me to find
- 3:53Speaker 2: out who's stealing your design? No, I want you to
- 3:56Speaker 2: force Marry Danville to give me that information without paying
- 3:59Speaker 2: for it. You mean I have a right to know,
- 4:02Speaker 2: and it's heard duty to tell me without blackmailing me.
- 4:04Speaker 2: I want you to scare Scaring girls is out of
- 4:07Speaker 2: my line, mister Fenris. You want me to investigate your problems.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Oh so you want to run up a lot of
- 4:12Speaker 2: investigating fees, do you well? I won't fall for it.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I'm not asking you to fall for anything. I'm responsible
- 4:19Speaker 2: to the board of directors where every dollar I spend.
- 4:21Speaker 2: It isn't my money.
- 4:22Speaker 3: It's your store, isn't it.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Well, it was my father's store. Now it belongs to
- 4:26Speaker 2: a great many people, and they expect me to show
- 4:28Speaker 2: a profit. I can't throw money away on detectives. Well,
- 4:32Speaker 2: it's probably just as well, mister Fenners. I don't think
- 4:35Speaker 2: i'd enjoy working for you anyway, mister Carter. If my
- 4:39Speaker 2: secretary were here, i'd have her show you out. Oh
- 4:41Speaker 2: we can find our way out. Come on best with pleasure,
- 4:45Speaker 2: mister miss Carlile. Do you think my office is a
- 4:48Speaker 2: public waiting room?
- 4:49Speaker 4: Mistrake is mit her desk and I have to see
- 4:51Speaker 4: the fact you do to marry Dandille.
- 4:53Speaker 2: It's none of my business.
- 4:54Speaker 3: But when you start ransacking my.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Apartment, control yourself with Carlisle. I've done no such things.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Then if you didn't, you know what you hired someone to.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Your accusations are in particularly bad tasting in front about tigers.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Ms Carlyle, h, don't worry about us, mister Fenross. This
- 5:07Speaker 2: young lady's outburst hasn't changed my opinion of you a bit.
- 5:11Speaker 2: I think i'd like to talk to Miss Carlyle privately,
- 5:14Speaker 2: though I forbid it. Oh you do, I certainly do.
- 5:17Speaker 2: This man's a detective, Miss Carlyle.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Fine, mister detective, if you come down to the sen
- 5:21Speaker 4: Russ Exclusive Shop, I'd like very much to talk to
- 5:24Speaker 4: you privately.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Well, I didn't imagine you'd have a private office like this,
- 5:37Speaker 2: Miss Carlyle.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Oh, yes, mister Carter, I'm in charge of the Senruss
- 5:41Speaker 4: Exclusive Shop. But with a job like that, I should
- 5:43Speaker 4: think you'd be afraid to antagonize.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Mister Fenruss, wouldn't you hate to be fired? He won't
- 5:47Speaker 3: fire me, Miss Bowen.
- 5:49Speaker 2: What makes you so sure?
- 5:50Speaker 4: Because mister Fenross is the only person in the world
- 5:53Speaker 4: who would have any reason for ransacking the apartment that
- 5:56Speaker 4: Mary and I share. He wants the information Mary has.
- 6:00Speaker 4: M do you have it too, Miss Carlyle. No, but
- 6:03Speaker 4: if I did, I'd do exactly what she's doing. I'd
- 6:05Speaker 4: make him pay for it.
- 6:08Speaker 2: There was a luck on your apartment door broken.
- 6:10Speaker 4: No, it wasn't if somebody had been there, because Mary's
- 6:13Speaker 4: wardrobe drunk, had been turned inside out and my room
- 6:16Speaker 4: had been.
- 6:16Speaker 3: All torn up too.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Was anything stolen?
- 6:18Speaker 3: Nothing of mine? And Mary, says, Sendrus didn't.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Find what he was asked, I see has come out,
- 6:23Speaker 2: you said. Mary Danville hasn't told you what she knows
- 6:26Speaker 2: about the fashion fix? Are you in your roommate on
- 6:28Speaker 2: friendly terms? Yes? Of course.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I got the store to hire her, and I also
- 6:32Speaker 3: saw to it that she was sush to hit. But
- 6:34Speaker 3: she still doesn't trust you enough to tell you.
- 6:37Speaker 4: That is not the point, she said, I'd be better
- 6:39Speaker 4: off not knowing. That's what he discovered was dynamite.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Look, miss Carlyle, I don't want to alarm you, but
- 6:46Speaker 2: can you get a room for yourself and Mary Danville
- 6:48Speaker 2: at a hotel for a few nights?
- 6:50Speaker 3: Why why? I suppose so?
- 6:52Speaker 2: And I'd do it if I were you, I wouldn't
- 6:53Speaker 2: let anybody know what I was saying.
- 6:55Speaker 4: But everything's happened while I've been here at the store.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Nobody would dare to try anything while Mary and I
- 7:00Speaker 4: were at home.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I'm not too sure of that. Is Mary at your
- 7:03Speaker 2: apartment now? I think so?
- 7:06Speaker 4: Hi.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I want to talk to her, and i'd also like
- 7:08Speaker 2: to examine your apartment.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Do you want me to take you there now?
- 7:11Speaker 2: No, I want you to line up a hotel room. Besides,
- 7:14Speaker 2: Patsy and I may do better talking to Mary alone,
- 7:16Speaker 2: if you think. I don't think anything yet, miss Cardle,
- 7:19Speaker 2: except that you may not find it healthy to stay
- 7:21Speaker 2: in your apartment.
- 7:22Speaker 4: All right, mister Carter, I'll do whatever you say. I
- 7:35Speaker 4: can hear somebody in there, Nate. Maybe she's afraid to
- 7:38Speaker 4: open the door.
- 7:41Speaker 2: It's Danville, Sally Carlisle senters. I'm Nick Carter, a private investigator. Luck,
- 7:49Speaker 2: miss Danville. I know you're in there because I heard
- 7:51Speaker 2: you moving around.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Yes, he isn't gonna let us in this.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I'm baring a camp right here on your doorstep till
- 7:58Speaker 2: you open this door, Miss Danville. I'm here to help
- 8:00Speaker 2: you if I can. Well, now you're being sensible. I
- 8:04Speaker 2: don't know you, Miss Jane, and I would like you
- 8:06Speaker 2: to tell us what you can about your apartment being searched.
- 8:08Speaker 4: For you recently, Dally Carlisle telld us about him. Miss
- 8:11Speaker 4: Dandell Nick and I are here to.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Investigate, so if you'll let us in, I'm in a
- 8:15Speaker 2: hurry right now.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I have a date. Couldn't you come back some other time?
- 8:19Speaker 2: I'm afraid this can't wait, Miss, but I can't. That's
- 8:21Speaker 2: one thing I want particular. I didn't know has anything
- 8:24Speaker 2: stolen from your wardrobe trunk?
- 8:25Speaker 3: No, Miss Carlisle thinks mister Fendra did the search.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Do what? Look?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Mister what's your name? I told you I'm in a hurry.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I'm light for my date now, good date for the
- 8:35Speaker 4: gentleman friends, Yes, my dates for the man.
- 8:38Speaker 2: We'll just talk to you here outside your daughterly right, but.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I'm to meet him downstairs in the lobby.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Oh your callers meet you in the lobby? Do they look?
- 8:45Speaker 3: I don't know you.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Maybe you're a detective and maybe you're not. But until
- 8:49Speaker 4: Sally's here to say you're okay, I'm not going to.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Talk to you.
- 8:52Speaker 3: I'm ready to leave and I'm going right now.
- 8:54Speaker 2: You're making a mistake, Miss Danville.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Maybe maybe not, but don't try to follow me down
- 8:58Speaker 3: to the lobby. You do well, I'll call the.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Police very well. They won't even go down in the
- 9:04Speaker 2: same elevator with you. Go right ahead, that's what I
- 9:07Speaker 2: intend to do.
- 9:08Speaker 3: You don't you going to follow her?
- 9:11Speaker 2: Trying to wait here and see what she does?
- 9:13Speaker 3: But what do you expect her to do that?
- 9:15Speaker 2: See? If you were miss Danville, would you leave two
- 9:17Speaker 2: strangers standing in front of your door after a conversation
- 9:20Speaker 2: like the one we've just had? Why that all depends?
- 9:23Speaker 2: Depends nothing. You'd meet your boyfriend in the lobby and
- 9:25Speaker 2: then get right back up here to see what's going on.
- 9:27Speaker 3: But if you ask me, I don't think she has
- 9:29Speaker 3: a date.
- 9:29Speaker 2: You don't know.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And if she did, it wasn't with a man.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Oh why do you say that?
- 9:35Speaker 3: Getn't powder a nose and it was shiny and her
- 9:37Speaker 3: lipstick was non straight.
- 9:39Speaker 4: No, No, I have a feeling she just wanted to
- 9:41Speaker 4: get away from this apartment as fast as she could.
- 9:44Speaker 2: And maybe you're right. Come on, let's get inside and
- 9:47Speaker 2: see what was bothering her.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Oh, you're not going to break into that apartment, are you.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Don't have to? Sally Carlyle gave me her keys. You
- 9:55Speaker 2: think of everything, don't you sure? Come on? Right?
- 10:01Speaker 3: Fair. It's certainly a pleasant living room. Nothing sinister here.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Mm hmm. There's other were two bedrooms, which one is
- 10:10Speaker 2: married Danville?
- 10:12Speaker 3: Well not this one, at least, I wouldn't think so.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Why not because the pictures on the vanity, and you'd
- 10:18Speaker 4: hardly have your own picture.
- 10:19Speaker 2: In your room, good girl. So Mary Dandie's room must
- 10:23Speaker 2: be the other one. Let's see what's the great fuger?
- 10:28Speaker 3: No wonder Mary wanted to get away.
- 10:31Speaker 2: He's got on the floor. He's been shot through the temples,
- 10:35Speaker 2: the close squire. Somebody just came in the front door.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Let's listen. Maybe we can hear something.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Okay, who's.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Who hear something? No? Here I go.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Let's get out of here and call the police.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Noting whoever you are. Come on out off too, all right,
- 10:52Speaker 2: miss carl Jerry.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Your fool after Oh mister Carter, are you hurt?
- 10:57Speaker 2: Not a bit, Miss carlile, But tell you a trigger
- 10:59Speaker 2: happy friend to quit punty that revolver at me. I'm sorry,
- 11:02Speaker 2: old fellow, and I was nervous that what's been happening here.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It's good those people can't hit anything with a revolver.
- 11:08Speaker 4: This is Jerry Bart that our passion designer Nick Carter
- 11:11Speaker 4: and his secretary of his poet Honey Do.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I'm awfully sorry I frightened you, but I thought I
- 11:15Speaker 2: told you not to come back here, Miss Carlyle.
- 11:17Speaker 4: I know, but I got to thinking about Mary dan Villa,
- 11:20Speaker 4: and well, if it was dangerous for me to be here,
- 11:22Speaker 4: it was dangerous for her too.
- 11:24Speaker 3: So I came up to get her. But she just
- 11:26Speaker 3: left a few minutes ago.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Oh I see.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Well in that case, Jerry, I suppose we might as
- 11:32Speaker 3: well leave too.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Run. That's a minute, Miss Carlyle. Did you see your
- 11:35Speaker 2: roommate in the lobby just now? From the lobby? No,
- 11:39Speaker 2: there's somebody else in this apartment, in one of the bedrooms.
- 11:43Speaker 3: You mean you've caught our mysterious visitor. Oh, that's wonderful.
- 11:46Speaker 2: But who I suppose you'd take a look. That's a
- 11:48Speaker 2: good idea. Who No, No, recognized her, Miss Carlyle. Of
- 11:54Speaker 2: course we recognize her.
- 11:55Speaker 3: But that's Mary dan Viel.
- 11:57Speaker 2: What you mean this murdered girl is your roommate?
- 11:59Speaker 3: Yes, but why would anyone, Mister Carr. You've got to
- 12:03Speaker 3: catch her murderer. You've got to.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I think I did catch her murderer, Miss Carlyle, but
- 12:08Speaker 2: I let her get away. Mary Danzil was apparently murdered
- 12:16Speaker 2: by the girl who made a cool, daring getaway. But
- 12:18Speaker 2: the FuG of his picture is on Sally Carlyle's benasy,
- 12:20Speaker 2: so we should know who she was in just a moment.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Now back to the case of the quiet roommates. Today's
- 12:31Speaker 2: adventure with Nick Carter brought to you by new post
- 12:34Speaker 2: war old Dutch Penser. The scene is Sally Carlyle's bedroom
- 12:38Speaker 2: and Nick stairs grimly at the photograph he's removed from
- 12:40Speaker 2: Sally's dressing table. This is a picture. The girl will
- 12:43Speaker 2: left your apip plank just as we arrived. Who is she,
- 12:46Speaker 2: Miss Carlyle.
- 12:47Speaker 3: That's Dorothy Great.
- 12:48Speaker 2: She is particularly the good friend of yours.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Well, she gave me the picture, and she stops in
- 12:53Speaker 3: to see me once in a while at.
- 12:55Speaker 2: All she's friendly as the secretary. So everybody Miss Dowd
- 12:57Speaker 2: trying to get in toroid with her. I say, well,
- 13:00Speaker 2: I think she can give him a boost of Finis
- 13:02Speaker 2: he really have that much influence with him? Well, if
- 13:05Speaker 2: I think I'll had trouble getting finish, said Okay, one
- 13:07Speaker 2: of my fashion designs I try to sell Dothy On.
- 13:09Speaker 2: At first, it's it's okay with her, you'll take it.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Oh, then she gets to see your designs before they're approved.
- 13:15Speaker 2: I'm sure she does. Uh huh. Who else sees them? Well,
- 13:18Speaker 2: Fenris of course and tell yes.
- 13:21Speaker 3: I see him too.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Do you think this Dorothy Drake would commit murder to
- 13:25Speaker 2: help Fenris? You said she was here in this apartment
- 13:27Speaker 2: when you got hit, didn't you, Yes.
- 13:28Speaker 3: It was well, I don't see why you let her
- 13:30Speaker 3: get away.
- 13:31Speaker 2: She told us she was Mary Danville. We had no
- 13:34Speaker 2: reason to doubt her.
- 13:35Speaker 3: But she doesn't look the least did like Mary.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Don't forget, miss Carlyle. I never saw Mary Danville before.
- 13:40Speaker 4: And we didn't find Mary's body until after Dorothy Drake
- 13:43Speaker 4: had left. She must have killed Mary.
- 13:45Speaker 3: All you have to do is find her.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Do you know where she lives? Sure, there's no secret
- 13:48Speaker 2: about that, over on Prince.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Street, but she won't be there. Mary must have known
- 13:52Speaker 3: that she was a fashion feef.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Just a minute, Miss Carlyle. We can't assume that she's
- 13:56Speaker 2: guilty of Mary's murder or of the fashion steps ere
- 14:00Speaker 2: mister apartment. Mister Fenner saw that access to the fashion designs.
- 14:03Speaker 3: But if she isn't guilty. Why did she run away?
- 14:05Speaker 2: We don't know that she has run away. If she's smart,
- 14:08Speaker 2: we'll find her at home. Let's see if she is smart.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Oh, I'll come in.
- 14:26Speaker 2: You don't seem surprised to see us, Miss.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Drake, I know you'd be here at well? Are you
- 14:33Speaker 3: coming in saying we are? I suppose you saw Mary satty?
- 14:39Speaker 2: We did?
- 14:40Speaker 4: And I suppose you're sitting to say I didn't kill
- 14:42Speaker 4: her naturally? And I suppose you won't believe.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Me when I do. Well you lie to us at
- 14:47Speaker 2: Sally Carlisle's apartment.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Of course I lied. I was frightened. I just saw
- 14:51Speaker 3: Mary's botty.
- 14:53Speaker 2: You mean she was dead when you went into her apartment? Yes?
- 14:55Speaker 2: She was? And how did you get in? I had
- 14:59Speaker 2: a where'd you get it? Solving murders is my business,
- 15:03Speaker 2: miss Drake? And unless you give me some straight answer,
- 15:04Speaker 2: is I'm going to escort you down the headquarters.
- 15:06Speaker 3: I wouldn't try that if I were you.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Why not?
- 15:08Speaker 3: I'll sue you for pose to rest and i'll collect you.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Seem pretty sure of yourself.
- 15:13Speaker 3: You'll find out how sure I am to try to
- 15:15Speaker 3: make trouble for me.
- 15:16Speaker 2: You think mister Senras will back you up. Uh. I
- 15:19Speaker 2: wouldn't count on that if I were you. No, Look,
- 15:22Speaker 2: if you're going to take that attitude, Miss Drake, I'll
- 15:24Speaker 2: have to show you I'm not bluffing.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Come on, Come on, where two headquarters? Where do you think?
- 15:29Speaker 2: Now? Look, you can't you let me can. And if
- 15:32Speaker 2: you won't come willingly with me, I'll have Sergeant Memphis
- 15:34Speaker 2: another homicide squad here within ten minutes.
- 15:36Speaker 3: Just try it and see what will happen.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Very well, where's the telephone, Miss Drake, it's in the hall.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Make fine, Carl Matty right, No, don't too deep water,
- 15:47Speaker 2: mister Carter, Well, if I were you, I wouldn't make
- 15:51Speaker 2: any phone calls until I knew what I was doing. Why,
- 15:53Speaker 2: mister sun Rush, I won't have my secretary, myself, or
- 15:57Speaker 2: the store mixed up in a murdered scandal, Carter, And
- 16:00Speaker 2: if you do it, I'll run you right out of business.
- 16:02Speaker 2: What are you doing here? Friendly?
- 16:04Speaker 4: He came because I called him as soon as I
- 16:05Speaker 4: got away from Mary Daniel's apartment.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Okay, now that we're back to that, miss Drink, I
- 16:09Speaker 2: still want to know why you went there. She was
- 16:10Speaker 2: following orders curtim your orders. Naturally. I was entitled the
- 16:14Speaker 2: information that Danville girl said she had, and I was
- 16:16Speaker 2: going to get it, even if you had to steal it.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Her attempt to extort money from me was outside the law.
- 16:21Speaker 2: You have to fight fire with fire. So you gave
- 16:24Speaker 2: miss Drake the key to Miss Danville's apartment, I did.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Why did you get it? We have a key shop
- 16:29Speaker 2: in the basement of our store. I borrowed Sally Carlyle's
- 16:32Speaker 2: key from her locker long enough to have a duplicate made.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Had you borrow it with Sally's permission? I told you
- 16:36Speaker 2: you have to die now. You have to fight fire
- 16:39Speaker 2: with fire. Okay, So you had Miss Drake sneaking to
- 16:41Speaker 2: Miss Danville's apartment. What was she supposed to steal? Mary
- 16:44Speaker 2: Danville claimed she had a package of correspondence to prove
- 16:46Speaker 2: the identity of the fashion thief. I wanted it. Hey,
- 16:49Speaker 2: wait a minute, Wait a minute. You say you sent
- 16:52Speaker 2: your secretary to get the letters Marry Danville head. I did.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Before she'd had any chance to let you know whether
- 16:58Speaker 2: she got them or not, you called me and asked
- 16:59Speaker 2: me to get them. That makes sense, It makes a
- 17:01Speaker 2: lot of sense. I had no intention of hiring you.
- 17:04Speaker 2: From what I'd heard about you, I was quite sure
- 17:06Speaker 2: you wouldn't take the job. Suppose I said I would,
- 17:08Speaker 2: I'd have found some excuse for not hiring you. And
- 17:10Speaker 2: why did you call me? That's really very simple, Curtie.
- 17:13Speaker 2: If Miss Drake had been successful in getting those letters,
- 17:16Speaker 2: Mary Danville would have immediately accused me of having an
- 17:18Speaker 2: apartment burglarized. But I would have been in a position
- 17:21Speaker 2: to deny it. Oh, I could have proved that I
- 17:24Speaker 2: was trying to hire a detective to get the letters
- 17:26Speaker 2: for me at the very time somebody else was actually
- 17:28Speaker 2: getting them. Very clever, Penris. And now you've put your
- 17:32Speaker 2: secretary right on the spot.
- 17:33Speaker 3: He has not.
- 17:35Speaker 2: I you were in the apartment with Mary Danville's body
- 17:37Speaker 2: when we found you, Miss Drake, and you admit why
- 17:39Speaker 2: you were there. That doesn't mean, by the way, did
- 17:41Speaker 2: you get the letters.
- 17:42Speaker 3: No, when I saw Mary's body, I need to stop
- 17:46Speaker 3: to look for them.
- 17:46Speaker 2: I think perhaps you did what I think. Perhaps you
- 17:49Speaker 2: found them and didn't want mister Fennis to know you
- 17:50Speaker 2: found them. You're accusing miss Drake of being the passion
- 17:53Speaker 2: Steve met preposterous married Danville's murder. It's preposterous to Fenris,
- 17:56Speaker 2: but it happened just the same anybody else except miss
- 17:59Speaker 2: Drake check go out at the store just before the murder. Yes,
- 18:02Speaker 2: Sally Carlyle took an extra hour at lunchtime because she
- 18:05Speaker 2: said she was nervous about her apartment and wanted to
- 18:07Speaker 2: go home to check things. How about Jerry Butler, say, I.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Remember now hat he came in while you were out,
- 18:14Speaker 3: mister Fenris, and said he wanted an hour off to
- 18:16Speaker 3: attend to some personal business. And I told him it
- 18:18Speaker 3: would be all right.
- 18:19Speaker 2: So nobody's eliminated. Well, looked as though I first jotted
- 18:24Speaker 2: to find those letters. But where are you going to
- 18:26Speaker 2: look for them? I don't know, mister Fenris, but I'm
- 18:29Speaker 2: going to start looking just the same. And when I
- 18:31Speaker 2: get any information, you can be sure I'll let you know.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Miss Bowen. What's the idea of summoning all of us
- 18:46Speaker 2: here to Carter's office in his high handed manner?
- 18:48Speaker 3: He has some information for you?
- 18:50Speaker 4: He isn't even here, He said he'd be delayed at that,
- 18:53Speaker 4: mister Fenris, delayed?
- 18:54Speaker 2: Doesn't he know? My time's valuable? Should we go back
- 18:56Speaker 2: to the storm in Dependence.
- 18:57Speaker 3: You can go back if you like. But I'm saying right.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Oh you are, we'll see about that.
- 19:02Speaker 4: I'm staying who that's the card and must have had
- 19:04Speaker 4: an important reason for Ashnus to come here.
- 19:07Speaker 2: The only thing that's important to me is to find
- 19:09Speaker 2: out who's been stealing our fashion design.
- 19:11Speaker 3: You mean, murder doesn't bother you?
- 19:13Speaker 2: Married Danville is outside below, Miss Bone. She deserved what
- 19:17Speaker 2: she got. Did Kyder say how soon he be here?
- 19:19Speaker 3: I'm sorry he didn't. Just the same. We'll wait until
- 19:23Speaker 3: he gets here, all of us.
- 19:34Speaker 2: This is an outrage. We've been here nearly two hours,
- 19:37Speaker 2: and I refuse to submit to such treatment any longer.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Where is Kyler anyway?
- 19:41Speaker 3: I'm sure I don't know. Mister Fenruss all he said
- 19:44Speaker 3: over the phone the last time he called.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I know he said to tell us to wait, But
- 19:48Speaker 2: I'm not gonna wait any longer.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Now that you are, your curiosity wouldn't let you do
- 19:52Speaker 3: anything else.
- 19:53Speaker 2: What would the devil's he up to? Anyway? Oh?
- 19:55Speaker 3: Miss Ford wouldn't tell even to you, Jerry. Oh is
- 19:58Speaker 3: not to reason?
- 19:59Speaker 2: Why?
- 20:00Speaker 3: Oh, it's just to wait?
- 20:01Speaker 2: Hi, everybody, Well it's about time, Carter. Do you realize
- 20:06Speaker 2: you kept us waiting here. Mister Fenrith, I've kept you
- 20:08Speaker 2: waiting about two hours. Well, your explanation better be good.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I'm a busy man. My explanation is very good. I
- 20:14Speaker 2: intended to keep you people waiting here when I called
- 20:16Speaker 2: you well the colossal, and I had to get you
- 20:19Speaker 2: here so I could search your homes without being disturbed.
- 20:22Speaker 2: You mean, I mean I've made a thorough search, miss Drake,
- 20:25Speaker 2: with a full approval of the police department. I'll I
- 20:29Speaker 2: don't have you tone into jail. I calm down, mister Fens.
- 20:34Speaker 2: You said the proper way to fight fire was with fire. Remember,
- 20:36Speaker 2: I confound you were interested in results, Fenders, while I've
- 20:39Speaker 2: got results right here in this package. What the letters
- 20:42Speaker 2: that cost Mary Danville her life? All ready to be
- 20:45Speaker 2: turned over to the police. Have you read them? I
- 20:47Speaker 2: haven't even examined them. I thought i'd prefer to do
- 20:49Speaker 2: that with everyone present. Oh, why wait any longer? Then?
- 20:52Speaker 2: I don't intend to wait. No, I'll take her of this.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Nobody's going to find me. You've got a gun, so
- 20:58Speaker 2: I see. Has anyone accused you of anything, mister Barbertt, No,
- 21:02Speaker 2: nobody's going to on as long as you have that
- 21:05Speaker 2: gun in your hand. I suppose you're right. You just
- 21:07Speaker 2: keep away from me if you don't want this son
- 21:09Speaker 2: to go off. Now at see these letters? Quite they
- 21:16Speaker 2: aren't the letters at all. Carter's trying to trick us.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Quite right, mister Fenders, they're fakes. I didn't even look
- 21:22Speaker 2: for the letters. You didn't look for them, No, I didn't.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It's defendless. How did you know these letters are fakes? Why?
- 21:28Speaker 2: I said? You've never seen the letters, and yet you
- 21:29Speaker 2: know it once? These aren't genuine? How about that? Carter?
- 21:32Speaker 2: Are you accusing me of something? Yes, I'm accusing you
- 21:36Speaker 2: of married Danville's murder. They're totally ridiculous. You don't think
- 21:39Speaker 2: i'd feel my own fashions, do you? If they aren't
- 21:41Speaker 2: your fashion? That's just the point, vendmist They aren't your fashion.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Not see here, your president at the store because of
- 21:47Speaker 2: your name, because your father founded the business. The money
- 21:50Speaker 2: you made stealing those fashions and selling them was probably
- 21:52Speaker 2: more than your salary.
- 21:54Speaker 3: So Sunless murdered Mary then deliberately sent me to her apartment.
- 21:58Speaker 3: So there's anything went wrong, I.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Be the suspect, mistake, don't be a fir.
- 22:02Speaker 3: I'm not anymore. I'm getting smart. The rest of us
- 22:05Speaker 3: had to check out before we could beat the store,
- 22:07Speaker 3: but you didn't. And I'm the only one who knows
- 22:10Speaker 3: you weren't around.
- 22:10Speaker 2: The store at the time of them.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Nick, that's right, she said, mister Fenrust is out, so
- 22:15Speaker 4: she told Jerry Bartley would be all right for him
- 22:17Speaker 4: to leave.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Look, Carter, it may be news to you, but there
- 22:20Speaker 2: aren't any letters. There are no Mary and I worked
- 22:23Speaker 2: out that scheme because I thought Fenris suspected me. What
- 22:26Speaker 2: the well, you see, it was like this. I paid
- 22:28Speaker 2: Mary to quitter job and make fenerist that proposition. My
- 22:32Speaker 2: professional reputation was at taken. I thought I could get
- 22:35Speaker 2: the fashioned fief to show his hand that way. If
- 22:37Speaker 2: you know they wanted a letters, why did you pull
- 22:38Speaker 2: that gun? Well, I got excited. I guess I knew
- 22:42Speaker 2: there weren't any letters, and then when you showed up
- 22:44Speaker 2: with a whole bundle of them, I figured I was
- 22:45Speaker 2: being framed with fat letters. I wasn't gonna stand for that.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I have all lost your senses believing that fantastic story
- 22:52Speaker 2: about hiring Mary. Danville look at him with his gunman's hand.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Jerry lookout to get your gun back up if you
- 23:00Speaker 2: want to slug in the heart, and that cost for
- 23:02Speaker 2: all of you. Mister Fenross covering the group with the revolver,
- 23:09Speaker 2: he grabbed some bartlet edges his way towards the door.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Nick caught his office. We'll see what happens in just
- 23:14Speaker 2: a moment. And now for the conclusion of the case
- 23:22Speaker 2: of the Quiet Room Mate, Today's adventure with Nick Cutter
- 23:25Speaker 2: brought to you by new post war old Dutch cleanser
- 23:28Speaker 2: mister Fenross. Revolver in one hand reaches for the door
- 23:31Speaker 2: of Nick's office with the other. So you thought Mary
- 23:34Speaker 2: dandil knew you'd been selling those fashion designs the Fenris.
- 23:37Speaker 3: And that's why are you killed?
- 23:38Speaker 2: Yes, I thought you were going to set the blackmail
- 23:40Speaker 2: me for the rest of my life. It's fault of
- 23:43Speaker 2: the children. Why you can't hang the blame on me, Fenris.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And you can't leave this office either, Firs, stop me
- 23:49Speaker 2: see what happens to you. I have a trick lock
- 23:51Speaker 2: on the door to prevent Yes, that's safe. I snapped
- 23:53Speaker 2: a secret catch when I came into the room. You
- 23:56Speaker 2: will never be able to find it, Fenris. Thanks for
- 23:59Speaker 2: telling me Curry in that case, I'll let you find
- 24:01Speaker 2: it for me. Oh no, no, Die, you don't have
- 24:04Speaker 2: any choice. Get over here and open this door or
- 24:07Speaker 2: I'll blow your head off. Wow, I mean it. Okay,
- 24:14Speaker 2: I guess you got me. Get it open. I'll be
- 24:16Speaker 2: quick about it, all right, all right, take it easy, Fendless.
- 24:18Speaker 2: I can't be quick about it. First, you twist the
- 24:20Speaker 2: door handle slightly to the left like me, and a
- 24:24Speaker 2: full turned to the right. Then don't try any funny business, Carter.
- 24:27Speaker 2: I'm right behind you, and I'm ready to pull the
- 24:30Speaker 2: trigger if I have to. I'm sure you are. How
- 24:33Speaker 2: you turn the door up to the left again, and wait,
- 24:37Speaker 2: give me the gun before you're off fis me. You
- 24:41Speaker 2: slam the door into me again, and I'm gonna slam
- 24:43Speaker 2: my left mist right to your face if you don't
- 24:45Speaker 2: knock that knock you. Oh, I've got a toller. All right, good,
- 24:51Speaker 2: hold on with this time. I didn't want to kill
- 24:53Speaker 2: Mary Danni Boom. I thought I had to do it.
- 24:56Speaker 3: I'm sorry. I can't sympathize with you.
- 24:59Speaker 2: He checked me, Carter, How did you know? I didn't know, Fenris,
- 25:02Speaker 2: didn't have any idea of who was Gilly. But you
- 25:05Speaker 2: remember what I said about gilly people running away, But
- 25:08Speaker 2: that's why I arranged this meeting, to give them murder
- 25:10Speaker 2: a chance to try to run away. And it worked.
- 25:12Speaker 3: But if there weren't letters, make if Mary Daniel didn't
- 25:15Speaker 3: have any letters.
- 25:17Speaker 2: But she didn't have them. The letters were from Penris
- 25:20Speaker 2: to the people who brought the fashion designs from him. Yes,
- 25:24Speaker 2: they wouldn't buy unless I gave them something to put
- 25:26Speaker 2: them in the clear in case the store ever brought
- 25:28Speaker 2: any suits against them. I thought she got hold of those,
- 25:30Speaker 2: that is in some way. But you act to deserve
- 25:32Speaker 2: your thot. I was double crossing. Oh you had me
- 25:35Speaker 2: half crazy. I had to accuse someone, didn't I?
- 25:37Speaker 3: And you're still trying to justify yourself, aren't you.
- 25:40Speaker 2: The score should have been mine. I only got a
- 25:43Speaker 2: small part of what I deserve. While starting right now, Fenris,
- 25:46Speaker 2: you're going to get more than a small part of
- 25:48Speaker 2: what you deserve. You're going to get the work. Well, Nick,
- 26:03Speaker 2: let's hear something about the adventure new post war old
- 26:05Speaker 2: Dutch cleanser is going to bring us next week, Mike.
- 26:07Speaker 2: It started and Patsy and I went on a visit
- 26:09Speaker 2: to another city and were greeted by a welcoming committee, A.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Welcoming committee with machine guns no less.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I went there and looked for a gangster, but
- 26:18Speaker 2: I spent most of my time looking for Patsy Mout.
- 26:22Speaker 3: I found the gangster first, and I was sorry I
- 26:25Speaker 3: ever did believe me.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Yeah, Patsy pretended to be a gun mall. He played
- 26:29Speaker 2: the parton Towner too well for her own Spacey, but
- 26:31Speaker 2: souls as though we're in for an exciting half hour. Nick,
- 26:34Speaker 2: What do you call this adventure? I call it the
- 26:36Speaker 2: Case of the Great Impersonation? No Nick. Carter Master Detective
- 26:53Speaker 2: is presented each week at this time by the Cutter
- 26:55Speaker 2: Heat Packing Company. It is produced and directed by Jock
- 26:58Speaker 2: McGregor and is copyrighted by by Street and Smith's Publications, Incorporated.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Charlotte Manson is featured at Passy. Today's script was written
- 27:05Speaker 2: by George B. Anderson. Original music is played by Henry Silverns.
- 27:09Speaker 2: This program is fictional and any resemblance to actual persons

- 27:45Speaker 2: nation's future. This is Michael Fitzmarris saying, when minutes count,
- 27:49Speaker 2: use new post war old Dutch cleanser. This is a
- 28:02Speaker 2: mutual broadcasting system.
- 28:09Speaker 5: H This is Andrew from Otrwesterns dot com. I wanted
- 28:11Speaker 5: to invite you to come take a look at our saite.
- 28:14Speaker 5: We stream live OTR Westerns twenty fours a day, seven
- 28:18Speaker 5: days a week, along with putting out podcasts of old
- 28:21Speaker 5: time radio Westerns. Check us out at Otrwesterns dot com.
- 28:25Speaker 5: You're listening to the great detectives of old time radio
- 28:28Speaker 5: with Adam Graham. Now let's get back into the show.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, uh, the first time the villain came
- 28:42Speaker 1: into the piece, I thought, even probably whatever's bad and
- 28:46Speaker 1: this piece did it. But dismiss that idea as they
- 28:50Speaker 1: wouldn't go with somebody so obvious. But this time, at
- 28:53Speaker 1: least we got to see the most mean character in
- 28:58Speaker 1: the story just get his come up, and we did
- 29:02Speaker 1: have a couple of clothes. First, his reaction about the
- 29:07Speaker 1: request for payment wasn't really rational, and then I guess
- 29:11Speaker 1: the other thing was it was brought home that he
- 29:13Speaker 1: didn't actually own the store, so those were our clothes.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Hope they helped all right.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Well.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Listener comments and feedback and some comments regarding what I
- 29:23Speaker 1: discussed in episode seventeen oh two, Danger Doctor Danfield. Your
- 29:30Speaker 1: brief rent today on Danger Doctor Danfield was just hilarious
- 29:35Speaker 1: had me laughing out loud. Your earlier reference to the
- 29:38Speaker 1: show prompted me to listen to an episode a while back,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and I could not agree more.
- 29:43Speaker 2: I was.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Not aware that every episode somehow survived with many great
- 29:48Speaker 1: shows have so many missing episodes. I wonder if anyone
- 29:52Speaker 1: has ever contacted Clear Channel about what they might have
- 29:56Speaker 1: in all the stations they own eight hundred. Answer to
- 30:00Speaker 1: your the first question regarding Clear Channel, they really whatever
- 30:10Speaker 1: problems are around with old time radio archiving, a Clear
- 30:16Speaker 1: Channel really doesn't have much to do with it. The
- 30:20Speaker 1: company didn't even come into existence until nineteen seventy two,
- 30:25Speaker 1: and the big problem is that radio stations disposed of
- 30:29Speaker 1: a transcription disc, which are basically seen as outdated technology
- 30:35Speaker 1: for old programs, and so I would be very surprised
- 30:41Speaker 1: if there are any commercial radio stations that have an
- 30:47Speaker 1: old time radio transcription disc. There might be some stations
- 30:51Speaker 1: somewhere that played a tape of old time radio from
- 30:58Speaker 1: the nineteen seventies or something since gone out of circulation,
- 31:02Speaker 1: but that's kind of far fetched. The big discoveries in
- 31:06Speaker 1: terms of old time radio programs have come from private
- 31:11Speaker 1: collectors and also Armed Forces radio service disc that are
- 31:18Speaker 1: in various locations, and the greatest treasure trove of uncirculated
- 31:24Speaker 1: radio programs are among private collectors that really do have
- 31:31Speaker 1: a somewhat eccentric view of what proper OTR listening is.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I've heard of some who believe that if a program
- 31:41Speaker 1: is on a transcription disc, the only appropriate way to
- 31:45Speaker 1: listen to it is on a transcription disc. They don't
- 31:50Speaker 1: want to go with all of this digitizing, and for
- 31:53Speaker 1: some it is a thing of I've got this episode
- 31:57Speaker 1: of Nick Harter. Nobody else has a copy. I'm the
- 32:02Speaker 1: only man on earth who can listen to this episode
- 32:04Speaker 1: of Nick Carter, and as long as I keep it
- 32:06Speaker 1: in my collection, it's going to stay that way. Not
- 32:09Speaker 1: of you I would choose to take or applaud, but
- 32:12Speaker 1: they've got the disk and that's their story. In terms
- 32:16Speaker 1: of seriously, why Danger Doctor Denfield managed to survive, it's
- 32:22Speaker 1: because someone decided that not only should this be broadcast
- 32:27Speaker 1: over the EBC network, it ought to be syndicated to
- 32:32Speaker 1: radio stations across the country, which led to a lot
- 32:37Speaker 1: more disc being produced than for your typical ABC program,
- 32:43Speaker 1: and so there were more discs for people to find.
- 32:47Speaker 1: That's the key thing with a lot of these series,
- 32:50Speaker 1: it's how many disc were put out there. Because most
- 32:56Speaker 1: transcription disc for old time radio programs were destroy but
- 33:00Speaker 1: a certain percentage just survived. So if you syndicated a
- 33:04Speaker 1: show for a long time, you syndicated a lot of
- 33:08Speaker 1: runs of the show, then the odds get better and
- 33:12Speaker 1: better than episodes are going to survive because there are
- 33:15Speaker 1: more opportunities for fans of old time radio to have
- 33:20Speaker 1: gone and picked up the transcription desk and saved it
- 33:25Speaker 1: from being thrown out. That's why, for example, that's so
- 33:29Speaker 1: few episodes of the San Francisco originated version of Pat
- 33:35Speaker 1: Nooback for Hire survive. One episode with Jack Webb and
