- 0:00Evan: I will not make that mistake again.
- 0:01Kayt: Yeah, I mean, you always catch good stuff at the beginning, too.
- 0:04Kayt: People are very wild at the beginning of a conversation.
- 0:10Brandon: On our show, we've been doing it for almost four years, and we have just finally
- 0:13Brandon: found our groove for recording.
- 0:15Kayt: Yeah, I get it. I've only been doing Fangs for two years and Tender Subject
- 0:21Kayt: for a year, and it's constantly shifting.
- 0:26Evan: Yeah, I honestly go through times where I feel like Like I things are all every
- 0:30Evan: every possible technical thing that I thought I had worked out as well.
- 0:34Brandon: Yeah, we all record our audio separately on Audacity and that's it.
- 0:38Brandon: We submit it to the Google Drive and it's so much smoother than every other
- 0:42Brandon: fucking thing we've done.
- 0:43Brandon: Unless we have a guest who doesn't have that capability that we have to.
- 0:47Kayt: Yeah, fuckery, but or just like forgets, which is a thing.
- 0:51Evan: I thought you use Discord to record now.
- 0:54Brandon: No, that who that was whoever else we would record with. We use a handful of
- 0:58Brandon: different apps and whatever, and then they all start trying to charge us money.
- 1:02Kayt: Yeah, I use Zencastr, and they charge us money.
- 1:05Brandon: We used Zencastr for a long time, and things went more or less well,
- 1:09Brandon: and then they started charging money.
- 1:11Brandon: And I don't know, it wasn't much, but for some reason, none of us would pay it.
- 1:17Kayt: Well, we applied to do ads for Zencastr, and we were like, oh, they accepted us.
- 1:24Kayt: So far, all we've done is like...
- 1:27Kayt: sex toy ad which i'm happy thrilled to do you know like i didn't want to have
- 1:32Kayt: to talk about um like online therapy or something like that because that's awful so.
- 1:40Brandon: Mattresses and socks.
- 1:41Kayt: Yeah i mean even a mattress i'd rather do like online therapy is like actually
- 1:46Kayt: harmful so i'd rather not do that yeah.
- 1:50Brandon: I've not heard anything good about it but i've not heard anything actively harmful about it it just.
- 1:53Kayt: Yeah i.
- 1:55Brandon: Don't know if there's one thing i can think of that you don't necessarily want
- 1:58Brandon: to depersonalize it's therapy.
- 2:00Kayt: For real well.
- 2:02Evan: Like you see like a different person each time is that how it.
- 2:04Kayt: Works no it's just i think i've i've just heard a bunch of things where i mean
- 2:09Kayt: it's the same as like anyone who is on a budget with a doctor you know you're
- 2:15Kayt: just seeing kind of the worst and like people who are i guess that's not fair it's not
- 2:21Kayt: the worst like the actual providers aren't fine I think it's just that like
- 2:25Kayt: they're overloaded and you know don't maybe don't get to form a commitment to
- 2:31Kayt: you in the same way but also.
- 2:33Brandon: It's a way to take advantage of providers because they do overwork them and underpay them.
- 2:38Kayt: Yeah for sure.
- 2:56Evan: I guess you both have, you both have podcasts. You only have,
- 2:59Evan: Brandon, did you ever start your other podcast or no, not yet?
- 3:02Brandon: No, I'm busy. We barely have time to record.
- 3:06Evan: Fair enough. Well, I won't mention it then, even though I don't know what it
- 3:09Evan: was called. You know, maybe you don't even have a name. Do you have a name for it?
- 3:14Brandon: I was always kind of calling it Red Channels, but.
- 3:16Evan: That's right. You did say that.
- 3:17Brandon: Because Red Channels was like an industry magazine that was specifically intended
- 3:21Brandon: to out communists and shit.
- 3:23Evan: All right. right well thank you both for being here today to discuss the fog
- 3:26Evan: and the mist both films with two words that start with the i.
- 3:31Brandon: Don't know how to compare the two because i would describe a fog as sort of
- 3:36Brandon: a miss and i would describe a mist as sort of fog yeah and they.
- 3:40Evan: Kind of talk.
- 3:41Kayt: About that isn't that in the mist so they're like is that a fog is it a mist yes.
- 3:46Evan: Yes they do like Like when he's first on the lake.
- 3:49Kayt: Yes, that's right. Yeah.
- 3:51Evan: Before we jump into the double feature we have this week, I thought I'd let
- 3:56Evan: you both introduce yourselves. And I know you both have podcasts of your own
- 4:01Evan: and perhaps multiple podcasts in your case.
- 4:04Evan: So, yeah. So I want to pick whichever one of you wants to go first.
- 4:09Kayt: I can go. I'm Kate. I have two podcasts. One is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer rewatch podcast.
- 4:18Kayt: We are on season six. We just finished Once More Was Feeling,
- 4:23Kayt: which is the episode everyone's always waiting for.
- 4:29Kayt: And the other podcast I have is Tender Subject, which is a cannibalism and body horror podcast.
- 4:39Kayt: That one's a little bit more... Fangs is silly. tender subject is much more
- 4:44Kayt: into discourse and theory and we talk about like art books um film but we get silly too.
- 4:52Evan: But yeah thanks for uh for coming on and brandon you've been on the show before
- 4:56Evan: but you can remind everyone your your podcast about cars yeah i'm and comrades i'm the resident.
- 5:02Brandon: Dumb guy from uh cars and comrades where we talk about cars and our comrades
- 5:08Brandon: yeah Yeah, we're trying to have a somewhat inclusive leftist space for people
- 5:13Brandon: who are interested in the car hobby.
- 5:14Brandon: We talk about labor history, car stuff, news, whatever.
- 5:18Brandon: Some days we just ramble.
- 5:20Evan: That's okay. That's okay. I'd say I learned more about cars than I had ever known before.
- 5:26Evan: Ever. Until I've listened to your podcast. Parts of Cars I didn't know existed, but that's cool.
- 5:33Brandon: I think everyone's go-to word for Cars is carburetors, and Cars don't even have those anymore.
- 5:38Kayt: Oh, shit.
- 5:39Evan: Just learned. Well, I guess I learned something new about Cars on this podcast.
- 5:45Evan: But Kate, when I reached out, I had sent you a list of films, which I do for guests.
- 5:50Evan: And I had the mist fog as a double feature because they kind of seem i guess
- 5:56Evan: we'll find out how similar or how they fit together but i guess what what made
- 6:00Evan: you choose them and you know do you have a um i don't know a memory of the of
- 6:05Evan: those of them or i don't know anything that uh that made you pick the mist and the fog.
- 6:10Kayt: Yeah um well i'm a big horror buff
- 6:13Kayt: and i love john carpenter especially and i
- 6:17Kayt: saw the fog at a at
- 6:21Kayt: salem uh film festival a
- 6:24Kayt: couple years ago on the big screen which was really cool um so my experience
- 6:30Kayt: of it i think was just you know necessarily bigger and more exciting than like
- 6:36Kayt: a lot of the times when we watch older movies because it was on the big screen
- 6:40Kayt: and it was like Like at midnight,
- 6:42Kayt: it just felt like the memory is very nice.
- 6:47Kayt: And then The Mist I actually just saw recently.
- 6:51Kayt: And I thought was, for a minute, I thought it was a John Carpenter movie.
- 6:57Kayt: Obviously, it's not. It's based on a Stephen King book.
- 7:00Kayt: But I thought the idea of the two together, it's like the horror of formlessness
- 7:06Kayt: and the atmosphere. fear that uh is very appealing i can.
- 7:12Brandon: Tell from that sentence that i am out of my league.
- 7:14Kayt: Oh boy it's gonna get worse no,
- 7:22Kayt: yeah i'm a giant nerd um i get really excited talking about horror because i
- 7:28Kayt: feel like it uh it's it like forces you to look at,
- 7:33Kayt: at things like you can't you can't turn away and you can't ignore and like that's
- 7:40Kayt: a big part of the fog i think.
- 7:41Evan: Yeah i agree with that and i know for you brandon you didn't you didn't technically
- 7:45Evan: get to choose this but i know from we've done the thing and we did we do another
- 7:49Evan: john carpenter no just that yeah this is only i think the.
- 7:52Brandon: Second time we've recorded together but i really really.
- 7:54Evan: No we also no no we did escape from uh escape from la oh.
- 7:58Brandon: I forgot about that.
- 7:59Evan: So also carpenter So this is the third one.
- 8:01Brandon: Oh, yeah. Oh, I didn't realize that
- 8:03Brandon: I was strictly resigned to doing John Carpenter movies, but I accept it.
- 8:07Evan: Yes, yes. Well, I mean, did you have like, was this even like in the top of
- 8:12Evan: your, I was trying to like think in my head because I'm also a huge John Carpenter fan.
- 8:16Evan: I wouldn't even say this is in my top five. He just has a lot of great ones,
- 8:21Evan: but it was sort of maybe like a forgotten one sometimes.
- 8:23Evan: So I don't know if you've like always liked that one too.
- 8:27Evan: It came to me later. i think i saw it maybe for the first time four or five years ago.
- 8:31Brandon: I mean if you remember i kind of got excited when you said that you were going
- 8:33Brandon: to do the mist because uh at that point i didn't
- 8:36Brandon: realize that you were doing a double feature so yeah
- 8:39Brandon: the fog's not one of my my john carpenter all-time greats
- 8:43Brandon: um i mean i think i probably have the usual all-time greats except i also really
- 8:47Brandon: like prince of darkness um which all my friends love to hate on so i don't know
- 8:51Brandon: where people stand but uh i i stand by loving them i remember seeing the mist
- 8:57Brandon: when it was maybe I didn't see it in theaters, but it was like maybe a year old.
- 9:00Brandon: And as I told you, my friends made me watch it on DVD, the black and white version,
- 9:05Brandon: which is the only way to watch this movie. Like,
- 9:08Brandon: right up front that's the fuck because the cgi is the weak point of this movie
- 9:13Brandon: it really is and dude when you put it the black and white it really like tones
- 9:17Brandon: down how bad the cgi is and it's a different fucking movie it's so much better
- 9:22Brandon: it really lets like the horror elements shine because you're not distracted
- 9:25Brandon: by like bad cgi bullshit yeah.
- 9:27Kayt: In my brain somehow i i decided that the mist was all practical effects and
- 9:34Kayt: then when i watched it again this week i was very disappointed in myself that
- 9:38Kayt: I had, I had like somehow subbed that in.
- 9:43Evan: Well, they did use a lot of them more than probably most movies did in the early
- 9:48Evan: two. Well, I guess not even early 2007.
- 9:50Evan: But there are Yeah, I mean, the special effects, I would agree with you,
- 9:53Evan: Brandon, I had never didn't know there was a black and white one until you told me.
- 9:57Evan: And I thought, Okay, well, if I'm gonna watch it, I can't find it anywhere.
- 10:00Evan: So I bought the the blu ray and watch the bunch of the special features,
- 10:04Evan: which were also pretty fun but the black and white one was definitely a slightly
- 10:08Evan: different uh definitely a different vibe and gives it more of that sort of i
- 10:12Evan: don't know lovecraftian kind of mysterious kind of movie than it is in it's
- 10:19Evan: you know the way it was intended but either either way i think it's still it's
- 10:22Evan: still uh you know solid and for.
- 10:24Brandon: Anyone not in the know it's the exact same movie it's just black and white but
- 10:28Brandon: it feels like it changes the tone a lot.
- 10:30Evan: Yeah i would say that's probably true um
- 10:33Evan: yeah i mean i was
- 10:36Evan: i was i think i put on my little notes i was gonna brandon you
- 10:39Evan: may not have done i didn't used to do this like a little icebreaker but i've
- 10:42Evan: maybe we'll do it uh slightly different i had wrote down normally like you know
- 10:46Evan: what's your if you could have you know dinner or something with a an actor living
- 10:49Evan: or dead who would it be but i'm gonna instead put you both on the spot on your
- 10:53Evan: uh not in order but what you would say is your top carpenter film just because
- 10:57Evan: you were talking about it brandon and now i feel like i've got to know Oh.
- 11:00Brandon: That's almost cheating because it's the thing.
- 11:04Kayt: Yeah, mine is also the thing as number one.
- 11:07Brandon: It's because it's not just my favorite John Carpenter movie. It's my favorite movie.
- 11:12Evan: I would concur with that. And then like beyond that, like to the next couple
- 11:18Evan: kind of could be, you know, ask me on a different day, escape from New York,
- 11:22Evan: sold on pre-613, they live. I mean, all those others, Halloween.
- 11:27Evan: It's kind of a toss up. What about Mouth of Madness? That's another one I actually just.
- 11:32Kayt: I like that one.
- 11:33Evan: That's another good one.
- 11:34Brandon: I rewatched that one.
- 11:35Evan: It's also, I feel like one of the forgotten one a little bit.
- 11:37Evan: it yeah i think the only the only one i would say probably most people wouldn't
- 11:40Evan: pick up near the top is probably vampires which isn't my favorite but i.
- 11:45Brandon: Mean again i wouldn't put prince of darkness up towards the top but i still
- 11:48Brandon: feel like it's it's underrated and i really like it i.
- 11:51Evan: Haven't seen it in a long time i probably do to yeah to re-watch it again um.
- 11:55Brandon: I think i'm trying to remember who's in it is it alice cooper that's in it there's
- 11:58Brandon: like some like uh like music like musician or somebody that's like one of the
- 12:02Brandon: like homeless people like shambling about outside and i just always appreciate that one.
- 12:06Evan: Of the guys who's in it is also in big trouble little china i think maybe i misremember.
- 12:10Brandon: Yeah i think uh jack burton's uh buddy that brings him into like the folds in
- 12:15Brandon: chinatown is i think he's in prince of darkness too yes that's that's yeah it's
- 12:19Brandon: pretty obvious that john carpenter has a certain set of actors he really likes
- 12:23Brandon: working with and goes back to them when possible i.
- 12:26Evan: Guess everyone can come in agreement that the thing is the best john carpenter
- 12:30Evan: john carpenter film i feel uh i feel like i don't need to there's no no arguments
- 12:34Evan: need to commence over that.
- 12:37Evan: But I guess when I think of these as, I mean, you already kind of alluded to
- 12:40Evan: it, Kate, the kind of the way that the mist and the fog kind of come together
- 12:45Evan: as, you know, a good double feature.
- 12:47Evan: I mean, I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of these two going together,
- 12:51Evan: but do either of you see like any connection beyond just kind of the,
- 12:57Evan: I guess, kind of the unknown you see, you know, as you said,
- 13:00Evan: in the mist, they refer to it as a fog, you know, in the fog,
- 13:02Evan: they could have referred to it as a mist.
- 13:05Evan: You know, they're just kind of weather terms if you, you know, get to it.
- 13:08Evan: So I don't know what you think of them as kind of like any kind of connection of beyond that.
- 13:14Brandon: I'm gonna leave this to smart movie person.
- 13:16Kayt: Uh i mean there's
- 13:19Kayt: the aspects of religion i think that
- 13:22Kayt: are a big part of it um you know
- 13:26Kayt: in in the fog it's like
- 13:30Kayt: the myth sort of is like retribution you
- 13:34Kayt: know so there's like a lot of i guess there's a lot of um
- 13:37Kayt: themes of like penance and
- 13:40Kayt: sinning and like you know you sort
- 13:43Kayt: of you get what's coming to you um in
- 13:47Kayt: the mist obviously that's like one character who's
- 13:51Kayt: kind of like turning everyone into you know who's like has develops this like
- 13:56Kayt: cult-like following but um in the fog it's like the whole town owes a debt you
- 14:02Kayt: know and the the priest is sort of the the only one who wants to talk about it and.
- 14:09Evan: Really and only because and almost only by accident.
- 14:11Kayt: Right He finds the little.
- 14:13Evan: The diary and other than like, because of the store, like, I guess it's almost,
- 14:16Evan: you could say that the, him finding the, uh, the little diary from his grandfather
- 14:21Evan: was inevitable because it was the anniversary and it created the little,
- 14:25Evan: I don't know, like the little, uh,
- 14:26Evan: earthquake or I don't know what you, something like that little storm causes
- 14:30Evan: a little, uh, the little diary to come loose.
- 14:33Evan: And then he, you know, the, uh, cause I think it was, was it supposed to be the one hundred year?
- 14:37Kayt: Yeah, it's their, it's their like celebration. Celebration. So they're like,
- 14:41Kayt: yeah, celebrating a town that would not exist without the massacre that occurred 100 years ago.
- 14:50Kayt: And like, yeah, they're just sort of like...
- 14:54Kayt: We can't talk about this right now. Like, we have a celebration.
- 14:57Kayt: People are excited. The town was built on this.
- 15:02Evan: Yeah, I mean, it's kind of like the celebration of really like any American
- 15:05Evan: patriotic type holiday, right?
- 15:08Evan: Like, just you could, well, July 4th or, I don't know, I guess that's really the birthday one.
- 15:15Evan: But any of those is just celebrating the massacre of someone.
- 15:21Evan: In this case, it was a little bit different, which actually we'll get to,
- 15:24Evan: which I think I'm curious how you look at the group that was coming in to settle,
- 15:29Evan: you know, that was massacred by the local town.
- 15:33Evan: but the one thing I was going to mention just about I only learned this I think earlier today,
- 15:38Evan: is that the the fog apparently was
- 15:42Evan: like conceived by Debra Hill which I guess was John Carpenter's I don't know
- 15:46Evan: if they were married girlfriend I think at the time they had gone to Stonehenge
- 15:50Evan: and as just as a an aside I just came back from England and went to Stonehenge
- 15:54Evan: and then learned this the next day is that apparently they gain inspiration
- 15:58Evan: for the movie because of a fog that That covered the area.
- 16:02Evan: And if you've ever been to England, you know that it's always rainy and cold and foggy.
- 16:07Evan: So apparently they used that and some other stories in a couple other movies from British history.
- 16:14Evan: I think from the 50s. I'm blanking on the name of the movie now.
- 16:17Evan: And so that was kind of their inspiration for it.
- 16:20Evan: But when I was watching it, and this is my...
- 16:25Evan: I don't know, my theory on the movie in some way or as a metaphor.
- 16:28Evan: Because I took it as like a metaphor for imperialism, where you see this,
- 16:32Evan: you know, this town that is intentionally shipwrecking this other group,
- 16:37Evan: which was trying to set up a leper colony potentially to, you know,
- 16:40Evan: help people. They had lots of gold.
- 16:42Evan: And clearly they were also, you know, we don't really know anything about where
- 16:46Evan: they came from, except that they had this gold and that was then stolen by the
- 16:51Evan: town to, to build their own town.
- 16:54Evan: So not much different than you could say any colony of Britain or any of these
- 17:01Evan: other places going into Africa, stealing their gold and their resources,
- 17:05Evan: then using it to build their own wealth.
- 17:07Evan: So that was kind of like, I don't necessarily think that John Carpenter was
- 17:11Evan: going for that there, but that was kind of my take on it. So I don't know.
- 17:14Brandon: I noticed how both movies had themes of weather.
- 17:19Kayt: You know, mist, fog, fog fog mist.
- 17:23Brandon: Oh i totally missed that oh no,
- 17:31Brandon: i almost.
- 17:32Evan: Spit out my water there you you took you did that at the perfect time.
- 17:35Brandon: Yeah uh i i did intentionally say a dumb thing i just uh i i'm not gonna get
- 17:41Brandon: as analytical i i uh i just was gonna say that like it's a weather phenomenon
- 17:46Brandon: that's a trope in every horror movie for ever uh I feel like it's probably less abused now,
- 17:51Brandon: but like, man, in the 50s and 60s, that was every black and white movie.
- 17:55Brandon: I feel like it was just something coming out of the mist, out of the fog,
- 17:59Brandon: whatever, what have you.
- 18:00Brandon: So I was just going to comment that they're both really exceptional movies that
- 18:03Brandon: like really called out the trope and then went beyond it.
- 18:06Brandon: Because yeah, Creatures in the Mist is as old as horror.
- 18:09Kayt: It's a great ghost story. And like the fact that it opens with a Poe quote,
- 18:13Kayt: I think is like a good, and also like the first scene is just like telling a
- 18:17Kayt: ghost story around a campfire.
- 18:19Kayt: You know, it's like, that's such a classic.
- 18:23Kayt: set up and like it does deliver it's a creepy spooky fun movie like it's not
- 18:30Kayt: super scary but i think it's it's a nice.
- 18:34Brandon: Well i mean i follow the story the the
- 18:37Brandon: mist takes it in a different direction because it's cosmic horror
- 18:40Brandon: and it's pervasive in the
- 18:43Brandon: whole movie but that's like yes it's not what the movie's about
- 18:46Brandon: like the horror element is like sure there's tentacle monsters
- 18:49Brandon: outside that are gonna like murder you if you try and explore but
- 18:52Brandon: what the fuck's that lady planning because i
- 18:56Brandon: mean she certainly doesn't know um actually i
- 18:59Brandon: i wish that i was i could remember where i found it but i i came
- 19:01Brandon: across a video where somebody did like their 20 minute long theory on why the
- 19:05Brandon: lady was actually correct um not just like correct in her assessment of the
- 19:11Brandon: situation but like that that she was like somehow dialed in to uh the cosmic
- 19:16Brandon: horror aspect of it and was just calling it correctly um i don't think that's that off base.
- 19:21Kayt: For the mist.
- 19:22Brandon: Yeah yeah no i don't think it's it's it's off base it's just it wasn't it's
- 19:27Brandon: it's not especially well developed enough i think that you can really like well
- 19:30Brandon: i'm sure either of you could i i can't um no i just i just thought it was in
- 19:36Brandon: a like took a relatively ordinary run-of-the-mill setting and made it something much bigger well.
- 19:41Evan: To the point about like the about the fog being you know a a really good ghost story.
- 19:45Evan: I mean, it had, I mean, I, I'm trying to think of other, I don't,
- 19:49Evan: at least in that time period, which the movie came out in 1980,
- 19:52Evan: which is also coincidentally the same year that the missed book was written by Stephen King.
- 19:57Evan: I don't, I couldn't find anything that there was any, since they came out around
- 20:00Evan: the same time, there wasn't probably any influence either, you know,
- 20:04Evan: from Stephen King writing his book.
- 20:06Evan: But the, um, oh, I was gonna say the, like the ghost story thing.
- 20:09Evan: Like, I think it's a perfect, as you said, Kate, it's a perfect setup.
- 20:14Evan: and it's, you know, the...
- 20:17Evan: I wouldn't say it's a perfect movie. It's not maybe my favorite John Carpenter
- 20:20Evan: movie, but I like all of the aspects of the kind of the, the,
- 20:24Evan: the world built the world that he builds of this town and kind of the, the cool nature of the,
- 20:29Evan: you know, the ship and they're going out and I don't know, it,
- 20:32Evan: all of it is, it's all very John Carpenter-y.
- 20:36Evan: That's if, if it could be a thing, it all feels very on kind of his,
- 20:41Evan: you know, if you watch the movie and didn't know it was a John Carpenter film,
- 20:45Evan: I think it'll be pretty clear aside from the music and the way he builds the
- 20:50Evan: kind of the tension in the boat when they're finally,
- 20:54Evan: when one of the group that was drinking with their buddies gets killed by the
- 20:58Evan: first victims of the fog.
- 21:01Evan: The fog? I'm going to say the wrong weather thing here.
- 21:05Kayt: But yeah, I think it's- Yeah, right, yeah.
- 21:07Brandon: Killed by the drizzle.
- 21:09Evan: Killed by the drizzle. The drizzle of the fog. Yeah, there was no...
- 21:13Evan: Well, we'll get more to the mist, I guess, in a little bit. I mean,
- 21:17Evan: I guess we're kind of talking about both of them.
- 21:18Evan: But there was another thing I was going to mention about the fog,
- 21:22Evan: and now I forgot what it was.
- 21:24Evan: But yeah, I'm just sticking to the... Well, maybe this is purely speculative,
- 21:29Evan: but what do you think the gold and all of the things that Blake,
- 21:34Evan: I guess, is the person that they...
- 21:35Evan: Was the head of the crew that they killed that was trying to make this leper colony.
- 21:41Evan: My theory would fall apart if they had gotten that gold from the Global South
- 21:46Evan: themselves, and then they were also equally terrible, perhaps still didn't deserve to get murdered.
- 21:53Evan: But I don't know. What do you think?
- 21:55Evan: Their backstory that we have no information about.
- 21:59Kayt: Out um i mean i i i don't know
- 22:03Kayt: if john carpenter had this in mind um
- 22:06Kayt: but uh sorry
- 22:10Kayt: i'm gonna get real heady um so
- 22:13Kayt: foucault wrote a lot about lepers and
- 22:17Kayt: like you know quote unquote madmen um and
- 22:21Kayt: like the exclusion of the
- 22:26Kayt: leper or the madman um
- 22:30Kayt: is like central to the spiritual spiritual
- 22:33Kayt: reintegration of the community so like civilization the way we think of it like
- 22:43Kayt: western terms is grounded in like the exclusion of something that we consider to be like unruly.
- 22:52Kayt: So I think like, you know, Blake was a, was a really wealthy man,
- 22:58Kayt: but he was a leper and like had this colony of lepers. And I think the, the.
- 23:07Kayt: Town was like sort of horrified by the
- 23:10Kayt: idea of like walking around and seeing lepers walk around
- 23:13Kayt: with them you know and and they were like we can't have like a nice seaside
- 23:18Kayt: town with these people just like wandering around that's disgusting and unruly
- 23:25Kayt: and you know so i think like um whatever Whatever the other is that we've decided is scary,
- 23:31Kayt: that's like the antithesis of like having a civilized society.
- 23:42Kayt: And this town was like sort of hell-bent on becoming that, you know?
- 23:47Evan: You could substitute leper for, you know, a, I don't know, you know, now I'm having a...
- 23:56Evan: yeah you say just whatever the the the
- 23:59Evan: actual town just wanted it's i'm
- 24:03Evan: mumbling uh like it could have just been they could have it's whoever
- 24:06Evan: they wanted to oppress essentially anyone who was trying to come in and and
- 24:09Evan: doing you know good for the people in their community and they're saying well
- 24:12Evan: no no no how are we going to get tourists to come in here and uh you know go
- 24:17Evan: surfing or i don't know what they do in this town go boating if there's lepers
- 24:22Evan: walking around you're going to of ruin our shit.
- 24:25Kayt: It's like the state of California has decided that homeless people can't exist in it.
- 24:30Kayt: You know, and like, where do you and the only solution is to just keep pushing
- 24:35Kayt: them around and like trying to disappear people rather than like what the, you know,
- 24:43Kayt: moral, humane thing would be to just like give people places to live.
- 24:48Evan: Yeah, and then on the other side, you wonder it makes me think that the,
- 24:51Evan: actual town um that's there already what is it um what's the name of the town i'm like something.
- 24:58Kayt: Bay antonio bay.
- 25:00Evan: Antonio bay right so i it seems based on the like the priest in this you know
- 25:05Evan: very nice kind of uh placey the nice church it seems like their their colony
- 25:10Evan: or their town was built probably on you know converting people to christianity
- 25:16Evan: and presumably or probably doing it,
- 25:19Evan: exploitatively so even so this this this kind of makes me now think that there's
- 25:23Evan: no redeeming qualities obviously about the people who built the town and that
- 25:27Evan: it makes me kind of have you have sympathy now for blake you know maybe they
- 25:31Evan: got the gold who knows how he acquired his wealth but at least he's trying to
- 25:34Evan: do good in this time so you know they deserve to uh get fogged.
- 25:39Kayt: Fogged buddy you've been fogged.
- 25:43Evan: Been fogged yes well yeah the like the way that they built the ghost too I thought
- 25:47Evan: was pretty cool with them you know they knock on the door like oh you know should
- 25:52Evan: we let them in you know yeah all the like kill scenes I thought were pretty
- 25:56Evan: cool and the kind of returning to,
- 25:59Evan: life too it's you know going after you know this town's 100 years old it's in
- 26:03Evan: I guess do they say it's on the coast of California so you know these people
- 26:07Evan: have been living there for 100 years and their family still live there and they're
- 26:11Evan: going to come back for their revenge so you know maybe someone should fog some
- 26:14Evan: of the other people who built to america right there's.
- 26:19Kayt: Something really interesting too about how it like uh the fog like turns off
- 26:24Kayt: all the lights and also like electricity and like kind of grinds everything
- 26:28Kayt: to a halt like everything just stops.
- 26:30Evan: Yeah i.
- 26:32Kayt: Was like trying to work on some sort of like anti-work theory and i was like
- 26:37Kayt: i'm not getting there but like not this time but but that's interesting like
- 26:42Kayt: i guess it's kind of like um grinding like normal life to a halt you know like
- 26:48Kayt: people can't continue to do their like regular town stuff.
- 26:51Evan: But what's funny is that they still try to right like
- 26:54Evan: the little like the little ceremony is still going they lose the
- 26:57Evan: microphone i think and then they're like well we're still gonna have our
- 27:00Evan: little procession like with candles and you know talk about uh you know and
- 27:04Evan: and some of them know at this point people members of the town know about the
- 27:10Evan: shady thing that's that you know the they have this information now and they're
- 27:13Evan: still like well i mean what can we do they're all dead so yeah um yeah.
- 27:20Kayt: It's like every bureaucrat and like you know who runs every town in a horror
- 27:25Kayt: movie like you know the mayor of jaws and the mayor of jaws.
- 27:30Evan: The mayor.
- 27:30Kayt: In jaws Yeah, that's... Yeah.
- 27:35Evan: The mayor of Jaws, like the mayor, because I think of Jaws, the shark is like,
- 27:39Evan: you know, a stand-in for, say, capitalism, something like that. So if the...
- 27:43Evan: He's the mayor of it, so he's like, you know...
- 27:46Evan: the capitals leader the president is.
- 27:48Kayt: His man is.
- 27:49Evan: Like his tough.
- 27:50Kayt: Guy who like does all the stuff he doesn't want to have to do to keep people in line and.
- 27:56Evan: Yeah yeah he's like the but
- 27:59Evan: yeah i
- 28:02Evan: don't know the when i'm thinking about the uh there are
- 28:05Evan: other aspects of the fog that i had written um this is
- 28:09Evan: just one funny line that i had was like one of the first notes i had
- 28:12Evan: is when jamie lee curtis who's like hitchhiking into
- 28:15Evan: town and she you know gets into the car with i
- 28:18Evan: think it's uh is it named nick i think it's his name played by tom atkins he's
- 28:22Evan: like he goes she goes are you weird it made me laugh every time i was like that's
- 28:29Evan: just that's that's your question and then she's you know talking about oh you
- 28:34Evan: know okay i guess i'm glad that you're weird or whatever.
- 28:36Kayt: Yeah, he's like, absolutely. And then they're in bed together.
- 28:41Evan: And I was looking at the age difference.
- 28:41Brandon: That answers my question 100% of the time, though.
- 28:44Kayt: Yeah.
- 28:44Evan: Well, yeah, I mean nothing wrong with that. I think the other thing that's weird
- 28:47Evan: is that Jamie Lee Curtis was probably 25, let's see,
- 28:54Evan: 32, and I think that Tom Atkins was like 50. It's a little weird.
- 28:59Kayt: Yeah, it was a May-December.
- 29:00Evan: It's not that far. Yeah.
- 29:02Kayt: I mean, it's so funny. Their whole whole relationship is really funny because
- 29:07Kayt: it does kind of like exist outside of like the goings-on of the town you know
- 29:13Kayt: it's like this all this stuff is going on that's like very official and they
- 29:17Kayt: have to like plan this ceremony and whatever and like the two of them are just sort of like,
- 29:23Kayt: detectives like randomly on their own yes.
- 29:26Evan: They are they're like yeah they're they're they show up at each place they don't
- 29:31Evan: really i mean jamie lee curtis is just kind of like with him at the bar and
- 29:34Evan: he's like, yep, do you want to go with me to this random place to do this,
- 29:38Evan: you know, to check this out? He's like, sure, why not? What else I got to do?
- 29:40Evan: You know, she's just, I don't know, it's the early 80s. She's just hitchhiking
- 29:44Evan: through, I think she said she's going to Sacramento. I don't remember where, San Diego.
- 29:49Evan: something i guess it doesn't really matter but yeah her kirk the whole jimmy
- 29:53Evan: curtis in this is kind of uh i don't
- 29:56Evan: know i like her character in it but i feel like the the person
- 29:59Evan: who's sort of like the main you know the main female lead
- 30:02Evan: is uh stevie who's like has the coolest job ever she has a radio show from like
- 30:08Evan: the top of this awesome um lighthouse you know just playing records and you
- 30:14Evan: know doing her steamy you know uh kind of radio voice at midnight or whatever it's,
- 30:21Evan: it's great i know that that's like that whole vibe about the movie i think is is awesome just the,
- 30:27Evan: you know the capture sort of like this early 80s uh california ghost vibe or
- 30:35Evan: i don't know i don't know what how to describe it those aren't very good descriptive words it.
- 30:39Kayt: Is a dream job from a a dream location it's pretty cool which.
- 30:46Evan: But she can't so she's i think they mentioned that she owns the lighthouse yeah
- 30:51Evan: i think but that seems to be her only job per se so it's the 80s she seems to
- 30:57Evan: have a pretty sweet you can get by you can get by on it well like five dollars i don't know don't.
- 31:06Brandon: You live in the lighthouse though.
- 31:07Evan: No she doesn't though she has like a separate beach pizza house.
- 31:10Brandon: Yeah, like waterfront property.
- 31:12Kayt: She has two waterfront properties in California.
- 31:16Evan: Yeah, but I mean, one of them is a walk-up, right? So it's cheaper.
- 31:20Evan: She has to walk up like 50 stairs and like down, like she goes,
- 31:24Evan: there's a lot of staircases involved.
- 31:26Evan: It would not have been so fun moving into the lighthouse. But yeah,
- 31:29Evan: she's got like a sweet record collection, playing things.
- 31:33Evan: I don't know. That whole aspect of it I thought was just, yeah,
- 31:37Evan: it's very cool. I don't know.
- 31:38Kayt: It's a good way to do exposition, too. Like, that she kind of gets to...
- 31:44Kayt: explain things from like the high point
- 31:48Kayt: of like the lighthouse you know that it's not like it's for a reason because
- 31:53Kayt: she's reporting on like the weather you know so we get to hear about the weather
- 31:57Kayt: all over and she gets to talk about it in a way that's interesting and not just
- 32:02Kayt: kind of like thrown in in a kind of weird awkward way yeah.
- 32:07Evan: And it's one of my favorite uh like horror movie i guess it's a trope i think
- 32:11Evan: i always think of like night of living dead as kind of the Well,
- 32:14Evan: not the first one, but maybe one of the best ones of using the radio to give
- 32:18Evan: people in the movie or in the town information about what they have to do.
- 32:23Evan: And she's literally the character that is doing the radio show.
- 32:27Evan: She gets calls from the weather guy who ends up getting fogged,
- 32:32Evan: which I'm just going to go with the fog thing.
- 32:34Kayt: Yeah, I like it as a verb.
- 32:35Evan: Yeah, he gets killed and he had been giving her information about the weather and the whole thing.
- 32:43Evan: yes that's basically what he was doing which you know
- 32:46Evan: if he had just if he hadn't been so flirty he wouldn't have had to go into work
- 32:51Evan: that day and then taking a shift he didn't need to but that's the other thing
- 32:55Evan: too he doesn't was he one of the original six people no he just happens to be
- 33:03Evan: in the wrong place the wrong time just take.
- 33:05Kayt: I wasn't sure if they just took sick it was just like well well, we just need six people.
- 33:10Evan: Oh, maybe that's true. The only people that seem to, well, they have the priest
- 33:15Evan: whose grandfather was presumably part of the town.
- 33:18Evan: And then I feel like the woman who was sort of the, was she the mayor or the, maybe she was the mayor?
- 33:24Evan: What do they say is her title? No, they don't say she's the mayor.
- 33:27Evan: She's just sort of like the leader of the town.
- 33:29Evan: I just presume that she also must have been somehow related to it, but either way.
- 33:34Evan: Yeah, so he just, yeah, the fog, it wasn't very you know selective in their
- 33:39Evan: killings you know they just will kill anyone that opens the door presumably
- 33:44Evan: but then it seemed like they could also come through the windows anyway so I
- 33:47Evan: don't know why they had to really open the door after all,
- 33:51Evan: courtesy because they don't yeah it's it's what it's like vampires they have
- 33:55Evan: to like let them in or something you know they're very they're not very polite this.
- 33:59Brandon: Actually was uh this is a prequel to vampires,
- 34:05Brandon: you have to stop drinking when.
- 34:07Evan: I'm talking i will say i know i swear every time i take some water you say something
- 34:11Evan: and i'm about to spit it across my screen and create a create a mist of of water.
- 34:18Kayt: It's like an interactive podcast yeah.
- 34:20Evan: You need you need one of those uh what are those movies like the 4dx where
- 34:24Evan: you sit and they like spit spit water and fog and smoke someone told me they
- 34:28Evan: saw the twisters the the new twisters movie under in the 4d and it like would
- 34:32Evan: shoot you know air at you during the twisters which i guess is kind of cool
- 34:36Evan: but also to me would be really i actively don't want that yeah it's also really funny because.
- 34:42Kayt: They they were showing them at like the amcs where you can like dine in and
- 34:46Kayt: it's like if somebody brought their like burger in there and then they're just
- 34:52Kayt: getting like sprayed and like shook every which way,
- 34:55Kayt: like it doesn't seem like an ideal dining experience.
- 34:59Evan: No, I, yeah, though. I mean the dining and do while eating while in a movie
- 35:03Evan: is like in theory is good, but I just feel like if your popcorn is just the
- 35:08Evan: popcorn and candy soda scene.
- 35:09Evan: Yeah. Maybe I'm a purist, I guess.
- 35:12Brandon: I'm with you except that peak movie theater is when they also serve beer.
- 35:17Evan: Yeah.
- 35:18Kayt: Yeah, I'm all about that.
- 35:19Brandon: Because my movie theater experience is that I'm going to have beer either way.
- 35:22Brandon: So if they sell it to me, it's easier for both of us.
- 35:26Evan: Rather than having to bring in the pocket beer.
- 35:28Brandon: Yeah, I've brought in full bottles of whiskey to the movies.
- 35:31Brandon: So they're saving themselves a lot of trouble if they just sell me beer.
- 35:34Kayt: Fair enough.
- 35:35Evan: I actually did go to one of those theaters recently. I saw, I think it was Civil
- 35:40Evan: War, and the only theater it was playing at was one of those dine-in ones.
- 35:44Evan: And the people next to me had a pitcher of margaritas, they had wings.
- 35:48Evan: They were having an entire feast while we're watching it. I don't think they,
- 35:52Evan: like, they also really weren't paying attention to the movie.
- 35:54Evan: So essentially, it was just them eating out at a really expensive restaurant
- 35:57Evan: while a movie was playing at the same time, which I don't get that.
- 36:00Brandon: I had a really similar experience recently, but kind of inverted,
- 36:04Brandon: where there's a horror-themed, classic Universal Monsters-themed restaurant
- 36:12Brandon: in Philly called Monster Vegan. Oh, yeah.
- 36:16Kayt: I live in Philly. Yeah.
- 36:18Brandon: Wait, you live in Philly? Yeah.
- 36:20Kayt: Oh. And you love horror.
- 36:23Brandon: We have some mutual friends.
- 36:24Kayt: Yeah, we must.
- 36:25Brandon: Because I go to the Horror-a-thon every year.
- 36:27Kayt: Oh, cool. Okay.
- 36:28Brandon: I've gone to the Horror-a-thon for the last 12 or 13 years.
- 36:31Kayt: Hell yeah.
- 36:31Brandon: Yeah.
- 36:32Kayt: Look at that.
- 36:33Brandon: I lost my train of thought.
- 36:34Kayt: Sorry.
- 36:34Brandon: Oh, yeah. I went to Monster Vegan while they were doing a quote-unquote screening.
- 36:39Brandon: They were just using a projector for an alligator.
- 36:43Brandon: But it was just a regular dining experience. They just have a movie playing
- 36:47Brandon: for you in the background.
- 36:48Evan: I like restaurants that do that. Even if it's not like for a thing where they
- 36:51Evan: just show like, you know, there's a one near me where they just show like old,
- 36:54Evan: like kind of film noirs just playing in the background.
- 36:57Evan: You can have like a drink and you can't hear it, but you can have something.
- 37:01Brandon: This is a little bit more engaged than that. Like they do like book a specific
- 37:05Brandon: room where like, you don't really have to have a reservation,
- 37:07Brandon: but like you just reserve it ahead of time, which I guess is what a reservation
- 37:10Brandon: is. I don't know how words work.
- 37:14Evan: Um i guess the
- 37:17Evan: one thing i was going to say about since we're all we'll get into the mist inside
- 37:20Evan: of the really bad cgi in the
- 37:23Evan: fog there isn't really that much cgi necessary
- 37:26Evan: but i think the little bit they have in the practical effects that
- 37:29Evan: carpenter uses for some of like the the killing kill
- 37:32Evan: scenes and some of the dead bodies is all like pretty good i think it all holds
- 37:36Evan: up pretty well given you know other i mean for most of carpenter's movies i
- 37:41Evan: think the cgi might hold up except for maybe the escape from LA and New York
- 37:45Evan: some of those are as Brendan and I discussed were pretty terrible spot.
- 37:49Brandon: On man perfect flawless.
- 37:50Evan: Flawless flawless CGI or not flawless flawlessly bad I.
- 37:54Brandon: Was saying flawless as in perfect but I was being deeply sarcastic.
- 37:58Evan: Yeah I would have hoped so given that we went on that for a little while during
- 38:03Evan: that but yeah other than that like I think the fog is you know I don't know it's,
- 38:08Evan: the vibe of the entire movie for me is you know it's there but i don't know
- 38:13Evan: do you have any uh kate any last kind of thoughts on the fog and then we can
- 38:17Evan: switch to the other weather pattern for today no.
- 38:20Kayt: I mean i think it's great i love the music it's you know another john carpenter
- 38:24Kayt: special um it's a someone actually on uh the internet said it was like a thanks
- 38:32Kayt: a good thanksgiving movie um.
- 38:35Evan: Which is.
- 38:36Kayt: You know coming up so if you want to watch it for but it feels like a good fall,
- 38:41Kayt: like spooky fall movie you're getting into your like cozy pumpkin haunted stuff
- 38:47Kayt: so like halloween or thanksgiving i think is like a good time yeah.
- 38:52Evan: I can actually see thanksgiving because now that now that i made the like the
- 38:55Evan: joke that it's kind of similar to you know the holiday that they're celebrating
- 38:59Evan: their centennial so i guess it's kind of the same idea in a way thanksgiving is more of of a fall.
- 39:05Evan: It is a fall holiday as July 4th is not.
- 39:07Evan: So this is, so is this, is this like a, this is a Thanksgiving movie then?
- 39:12Kayt: Yeah.
- 39:12Evan: I like it.
- 39:13Kayt: And there aren't that many Thanksgiving horror movies. There are a couple in there. Pretty bad.
- 39:18Evan: Yeah. As I say, I can't think of any really good Thanksgiving horror movies.
- 39:21Kayt: Yeah. Thanksgiving is extremely, extremely bad.
- 39:25Evan: Yeah. That's the only one that I can think of really at the top of my mind.
- 39:29Evan: Yeah. So if you're listening out there and you have you know five to ten million
- 39:32Evan: dollars to make a movie consider making a thanksgiving actually you could do
- 39:37Evan: something like this where you just kill a bunch of the founding fathers of america i mean i.
- 39:41Kayt: Think there's a lot of ideas there for people with horror wasn't.
- 39:44Brandon: There a thanksgiving themed slasher flick like a year or two ago.
- 39:47Kayt: There's one that's like a pilgrim thanksgiving slasher right.
- 39:53Evan: Oh yeah yeah.
- 39:54Brandon: That was it was actually not terrible it wasn't great but but I didn't hate it.
- 39:58Kayt: Well, there can be, yeah, there can be more. I feel like if somebody made one
- 40:02Kayt: that was kind of like the witch, the vich for Thanksgiving specifically.
- 40:08Brandon: To me, that feels like a Thanksgiving movie.
- 40:10Kayt: Yeah, no, that's definitely a Thanksgiving movie. We should curate like a sort
- 40:16Kayt: of tangentially Thanksgiving film festival.
- 40:23Evan: Isn't there a movie? I don't think I've actually seen it.
- 40:27Evan: I want to say that Bruce Campbell was in some movie about Black Friday.
- 40:32Evan: Did I make that up?
- 40:34Evan: I have to look that up. For some reason, it sounds like I thought because Black
- 40:38Evan: Friday, I assume, would be like took place in a store.
- 40:42Kayt: Oh, like the horrors of malls. Yeah.
- 40:45Evan: I think anything related to shopping is kind of like a horror movie to Dawn
- 40:51Evan: of the Dead, which I guess that's not a Thanksgiving movie, but it takes place
- 40:54Evan: in a... That's about all I got there.
- 40:56Evan: But yeah, so I guess we can go over to The Mist.
- 41:01Evan: And I think you had mentioned, Brandon, that you can see it in the black and
- 41:07Evan: white if you have the DVD.
- 41:09Evan: I couldn't find it anywhere online otherwise, which is why I went with that.
- 41:12Evan: But the one thing that I thought was really cool, I mean, neither of these movies have very high budgets.
- 41:16Evan: I forgot to mention that the fog was only made for a million dollars and it
- 41:20Evan: netted 21 million in the box office.
- 41:23Evan: Whereas the mist, you know, with inflation, it's up to 18 million in 2007 for
- 41:28Evan: the budget, and it made 57 million.
- 41:30Evan: So pretty solid. But the thing that I learned about it is that Frank Darabont,
- 41:34Evan: when he wanted to make the movie and got the rights from Stephen King,
- 41:37Evan: he apparently was told they had to make the movie and film it in six weeks,
- 41:42Evan: which I think might've also included some of the editing.
- 41:45Evan: They had to do the whole thing in just a couple months, which is crazy.
- 41:48Evan: And they basically said, I'll do that if you let me keep the original ending,
- 41:55Evan: which I'm sure we'll talk about, is a pretty brutal ending as far as endings go.
- 42:01Evan: Endings that you don't normally see in movies in general, which the studio did not want to.
- 42:07Evan: I think Harvey Weinstein might have been part of that, or maybe I I made that up.
- 42:12Evan: For some reason, I thought Harvey Weinstein said they didn't want to have it.
- 42:15Evan: Maybe I'm misremembering. Anyway, but yeah, The Mist is an adaptation of the
- 42:21Evan: Stephen King book from 1980, which the ending is completely different than his book.
- 42:26Evan: And they have a special feature on the Blu-ray with them talking about it.
- 42:31Evan: And he said, Stephen King, that it was one of his few favorite adaptations of any of his books.
- 42:37Evan: And I think Frank Darabont pretty much killed this this, uh.
- 42:42Brandon: I could be mixing this up with something else, but didn't he say about The Mist
- 42:48Brandon: that he liked their ending better than his own?
- 42:51Evan: He did say that, yep.
- 42:53Brandon: Which, admittedly, when I first saw this movie, I think if the ending had been
- 42:57Brandon: different, I would have probably more or less forgotten about it,
- 43:00Brandon: but it was so fucking memorable.
- 43:02Kayt: Yeah, the ending is such, it wrecks you.
- 43:06Brandon: It's brutal.
- 43:07Kayt: It is brutal.
- 43:09Brandon: And when I watched it again years
- 43:11Brandon: later, I was like, oh, this whole movie actually is solid and stands up.
- 43:16Brandon: That ending is probably the reason that I actually came back and revisited the movie.
- 43:21Evan: Yeah, I think the tropes in it, as far as the Lovecraftian, you mentioned,
- 43:26Evan: Brandon, the cosmic horror.
- 43:28Evan: You have sort of that religious kind of woman in it, which I think is an interesting
- 43:33Evan: piece we can also discuss.
- 43:36Evan: us and then you have kind of like just the monsters in
- 43:39Evan: the mist literally you know of unknown origin you
- 43:42Evan: know that at first you don't think you don't know what's there you don't know
- 43:45Evan: that's out there and then slowly see more and more of them and the practical
- 43:49Evan: effects they use for some of the monsters was good but the cgi for the ones
- 43:53Evan: they use was really bad but that's the only knock on the movie i would say is the scene honestly it's.
- 43:59Kayt: So funny that like i guess we haven't gotten there
- 44:02Kayt: yet and like me i kind of hope maybe we don't but like how we have nostalgia
- 44:06Kayt: for practical effects we have no nostalgia for like early cgi um says a lot
- 44:15Kayt: about yeah like practical effects and how they can like hold up.
- 44:19Brandon: In my limited experience dealing with the young
- 44:22Brandon: folks um it's it's been in my experience that like for like i'm i'm 40 people
- 44:29Brandon: of of my sort of uh peer group yeah extremely uh nostalgic for for practical
- 44:35Brandon: effects yeah i find that like a lot of younger people that i've talked to about
- 44:38Brandon: horror movies which granted not a lot of,
- 44:41Brandon: i've done this with but they're relatively indifferent they're just
- 44:44Brandon: kind of like all right whatever i mean like granted that you know if you're younger you're
- 44:47Brandon: coming up in an era where cgi has gotten so much better because we all had to
- 44:51Brandon: suffer through the real worst of it yeah um but yeah that when you like i worked
- 44:55Brandon: with someone last year who was mid-20s actually told me their favorite movie
- 45:00Brandon: was the thing but like we talk about modern stuff with like heavy cgi and like
- 45:05Brandon: never mentioned CGI versus practical effects.
- 45:08Brandon: It just wasn't a factor to her, you know, viewing experience,
- 45:13Brandon: which to me, like the reason the thing is one of my favorite movies is that.
- 45:18Kayt: Oh yeah. And like finding out, like watching the behind the scenes movie of
- 45:24Kayt: the thing and like hearing all the special effects guys talk about how they
- 45:28Kayt: like gassed themselves by accident once and like set the place on fire.
- 45:34Kayt: fire and you know like uh the.
- 45:36Brandon: Way they made.
- 45:37Kayt: The thing logo like in a fish tank is like the coolest shit.
- 45:42Brandon: That's so fucking cool yeah i was i was gutted recently because i learned that
- 45:47Brandon: when they did the like requel or whatever you want to call it for the thing
- 45:50Brandon: um apparently that director's favorite movie was the thing and he like genuinely
- 45:55Brandon: wanted to like do it justice and apparently he insisted that like,
- 46:00Brandon: most to all of the effects be practical and like
- 46:04Brandon: after the fact producers were like uh this actually
- 46:07Brandon: sucks make it all cgi um so apparently the original intention was the director
- 46:12Brandon: was like no no i want to do justice to one of my favorite movies let's do this
- 46:16Brandon: right and it got fucked over by the studio yeah typical yeah so i i don't know
- 46:23Brandon: if there's like a like a director's cut that has more
- 46:27Brandon: practical effects out there or to what stage it made it to.
- 46:30Brandon: But it made me really curious about what could have been.
- 46:32Evan: Yeah. I mean, the one thing I did also learn about in the miss is that Frank
- 46:36Evan: Darabont wanted to use more practical effects than they ended up using.
- 46:41Evan: So they like build all these, like a lot of the times when they would have something
- 46:44Evan: like a bug in the, in the grocery store flying at them, they actually were holding
- 46:48Evan: up like the model to kind of show them what it looked like.
- 46:52Evan: And then they CGI in the, you know, terrible ones. I
- 46:55Evan: wish they had just gone with that because also in
- 46:58Evan: the and then the scene when they're the early on when they're in
- 47:00Evan: the in the grocery store and they go to the back and the the one
- 47:03Evan: you know the bag guy is you know pulled out by
- 47:06Evan: like the you know whatever the monster with the
- 47:09Evan: arms octopus whatever it is they had like one of the pieces they use was a real
- 47:15Evan: you know piece they're going to use and then they cut that out too they're like
- 47:20Evan: no we're just going to use CJ over it and that's really just disappointing like
- 47:23Evan: I don't the only reason they did that i think was because they wanted to rush
- 47:26Evan: it to screen they could put it out quicker,
- 47:30Evan: which i don't know that actually that doesn't actually make any sense well
- 47:34Evan: i guess they use really shitty cgi they can do it really quick i don't
- 47:36Evan: know and and they did but yeah as i
- 47:40Evan: said like so that's like the worst part of the movie but i don't know the i
- 47:44Evan: i just love the the setup and because we both are talking about this is actually
- 47:48Evan: perfect i don't know if either of you you notice at the very beginning of the
- 47:51Evan: miss when they show the um the artist uh played by um.
- 47:58Evan: Tom Jane. Thomas Tom Jane, yeah.
- 48:02Evan: He's doing his little artist thing, and one of the, he has the thing,
- 48:07Evan: yeah, you knew what I was going to say.
- 48:09Evan: He has the thing screen, the cover right in the background as if he had been
- 48:14Evan: the person who designed that.
- 48:15Evan: And I don't know why they chose to do that, but they did, and it's also my,
- 48:19Evan: you probably can't see it, it's my home screen.
- 48:21Evan: But yeah, I thought that was such a cool little nod and just kind of a really good setup to the movie.
- 48:26Brandon: Game recognized game, yeah.
- 48:27Kayt: Totally. yeah you do the like leonardo dicaprio pointing meme to.
- 48:32Evan: To the same poster is that like i'm like sitting there holding my phone with
- 48:36Evan: the actual picture i'm like look that's the thing yeah that's uh we're.
- 48:40Brandon: Literally doing a podcast about two different movies and we keep talking about
- 48:44Brandon: the thing yeah well no complaints i'm just that's what a good movie it is is well.
- 48:49Evan: It's a it's a movie that has two words and the one starts with the so it's a
- 48:53Evan: triple feature the thing i don't
- 48:56Evan: like there is i guess there isn't any really there is
- 48:59Evan: weather involved in the thing as well there's snow and cold
- 49:02Evan: so you could have you could do it as a tenuous connection
- 49:05Evan: bud i was trying trying to
- 49:09Evan: get it in there but yeah the the like the whole um like the whole opening and
- 49:13Evan: the way they kind of build it is the i guess one of the so the um i know oh
- 49:19Evan: i know i know i was going to say is that andre brower who uh was you know his
- 49:22Evan: neighbor in the like the opening of the movie and we have it,
- 49:26Evan: I thought it was such like a good kind of opening to creating this,
- 49:30Evan: you know, coastal elite kind of thing with sort of like the locals of the town.
- 49:35Evan: And then it gets kind of really like flipped around a lot with some of the different people in the store.
- 49:39Evan: And, you know, just an entire movie taking place in essentially one location
- 49:42Evan: for the entire time, minus a few, you know, the very last scene and the scene
- 49:47Evan: they go next door to the pharmacy and a few scenes in in the parking lot, it's all one place.
- 49:52Evan: And it, I don't know, it, you don't, you don't, it doesn't feel like it,
- 49:55Evan: you know, some of those movies where it's everything takes place in a single place.
- 49:59Evan: And it, uh, I don't know. I thought it was, uh,
- 50:03Evan: especially like the camera work which i then learned in the extras was the cameras
- 50:08Evan: were on these 360 degree sort of like.
- 50:10Kayt: A lazy susan.
- 50:11Evan: Or something yeah or there was like on their shoulders but they were able to
- 50:15Evan: move like in 360 degrees around it so apparently a lot of the shots they were
- 50:20Evan: using were actually like the background shots that they then able were able
- 50:24Evan: to capture sort of accidentally and so like the screen like all the i don't
- 50:28Evan: know i'm just going on and on It feels.
- 50:31Brandon: Like a dumb guy thing to say, but this is a very small movie that takes place largely in one store.
- 50:38Brandon: And until you said that, I never really realized that because it doesn't have the feeling of a small.
- 50:46Brandon: There's nothing claustrophobic about it. There's nothing that feels like it
- 50:49Brandon: fell short because they were confined.
- 50:52Brandon: They had the space of a supermarket, but yeah, I did not realize that actually.
- 50:57Kayt: Yeah, that's always a good place for a horror movie. you know,
- 51:00Kayt: I think is like the single location.
- 51:03Evan: I mean, yeah, sorry to interrupt you. I was going to say that's,
- 51:05Evan: yeah, I agree. I love that guy.
- 51:07Evan: You know, I like that kind of trope of, but yeah, they had all the different
- 51:12Evan: spots in the grocery store.
- 51:13Evan: You know, you had kind of the scene by the windows where they're blocking,
- 51:16Evan: you know, preventing the creatures from coming in.
- 51:19Evan: They have the garage area, the loading dock, and then, you know,
- 51:23Evan: the pharmacy next door, which is probably like the creepiest part,
- 51:27Evan: even though the CGI sucks. It was the spiders always creep the hell out of me is really gross.
- 51:33Kayt: And that one and like when the spiders take over the guy and then just pour
- 51:38Kayt: out of him. It's so gross.
- 51:40Evan: Yeah, that was that was definitely good. But yeah, I mean the the yeah,
- 51:47Evan: I don't know Brandon. That's,
- 51:51Evan: I don't know. I think that the cameras, I think, maybe played into it where
- 51:55Evan: you didn't... It wasn't just kind of like from a single perspective either.
- 51:59Evan: You always got... You had them sitting on the ground when the other woman is
- 52:03Evan: kind of helping his son and taking
- 52:06Evan: care of his son and all these different things. And yeah, I don't know.
- 52:10Evan: The first time I saw this, I didn't know the ending.
- 52:13Evan: I didn't know what was going to happen. But I thought to myself,
- 52:15Evan: something is gonna happen to this kid and it's gonna be devastating because
- 52:18Evan: why have him here if not either be the person who only one who survives or he's going to die yeah.
- 52:26Kayt: Oof what an end um.
- 52:29Evan: Yeah and so this is that okay no.
- 52:32Kayt: I uh i would love to talk about yeah just like the relationships between everyone
- 52:39Kayt: and like how people all deal with like chaos in the movie me.
- 52:43Evan: Yeah yeah so that's like i guess to bring some of the other sort
- 52:46Evan: of like the main like the main characters as far as
- 52:49Evan: the within there is the david and his
- 52:51Evan: son who i was just referring to and so he's sort
- 52:54Evan: of like the local in the town who paints you know these posters for movies and
- 52:59Evan: then you have um i think her name is mrs carmody who's sort of this religious
- 53:02Evan: fanatic you mentioned her earlier brandon like the the theory about her so she
- 53:08Evan: kind of is the you slowly kind of see her become more fanatical and getting
- 53:13Evan: more people kind of behind her.
- 53:14Evan: And then you have, I think, Amanda Dunfrey, who's played by Lori Holden,
- 53:19Evan: who's, I think they mentioned she has a family, but she's just there by herself.
- 53:24Evan: Andre Brouwer, Brent Norton, who's sort of like the big city attorney,
- 53:28Evan: who's the neighbor who we meet early on.
- 53:31Evan: And then you have a bunch of people sort of who work, who are more like,
- 53:34Evan: I would say, I guess you could call them more like working class people,
- 53:38Evan: the people who work in the grocery store.
- 53:40Evan: I love Toby Jones just as an actor in general, and I thought he is great in this movie.
- 53:46Evan: And he's kind of a bag boy, I guess, or some person in the grocery store.
- 53:53Evan: You have the grocery store owner.
- 53:54Evan: And then you have a few of the local residents, kind of like working class type
- 53:58Evan: people that are... One of them's kind of in,
- 54:03Evan: I don't know, maybe in kind of like, not scrubs is the wrong word.
- 54:08Kayt: Yeah, it's like coveralls.
- 54:09Evan: Like he works in a, coveralls, yes, that was a word I was thinking of.
- 54:13Evan: He works in cars, perhaps, Brandon. He could be a comrade on Cars and Comrades,
- 54:19Evan: although based on his trajectory in this, probably not, given that he kind of
- 54:23Evan: goes the religious fanatic.
- 54:25Evan: But those are kind of like all the main ones. I don't think I missed any.
- 54:29Evan: I think that's all of them.
- 54:30Kayt: Oh, there's the older lady who's amazing. I guess she's not a main character.
- 54:35Evan: Oh, yeah. She has the best lines.
- 54:37Kayt: Yeah, when she lobs a can of peas at Mrs. Carmody and calls her a buzzard or something.
- 54:45Evan: She also has... I mean, we can talk about the relationship, but she has one
- 54:49Evan: of my favorite lines in the whole movie.
- 54:52Evan: Before they're locked in the grocery store and they're just having a panic before
- 54:56Evan: the mist, I guess, like kind of consumes the whole town.
- 54:58Evan: She like very astutely basically says, you know, why is it that the military
- 55:03Evan: is, you know, running this town and spending all their money on weapons instead
- 55:07Evan: of, you know, education?
- 55:09Evan: And then you, you know, it's kind of like setting up a lot of what will happen
- 55:14Evan: is that we learn later that the military has basically had an experiment that's gone wrong and,
- 55:19Evan: you know, now killed probably half or more of the town. And so it's actually.
- 55:24Brandon: A commentary on why we need an enormous military budget so that they have money
- 55:28Brandon: to clean up their own mistakes with. Right.
- 55:31Kayt: Because they have to save us at the end.
- 55:33Brandon: Yeah.
- 55:35Evan: Yes, that's right. If we hadn't given that money, how would they have been able
- 55:38Evan: to afford those big flamethrowers and things at the end of the movie?
- 55:42Kayt: Exactly.
- 55:43Evan: The relationships between them is interesting. I guess it all devolves into
- 55:49Evan: these different little clicks almost.
- 55:52Evan: You have the people that follow the religious fanatic and you have the son who
- 55:59Evan: is just in utter shock of all of this.
- 56:04Evan: His mother isn't there. His mother is still at home. And I don't know,
- 56:07Evan: what did you make of some of the like the relationships and maybe how they fit
- 56:11Evan: in kind of how they deal with all of what's going?
- 56:14Kayt: I mean, I think ultimately, even though I really like this movie,
- 56:17Kayt: I think the politics are kind of conservative.
- 56:20Kayt: Like, you know, sort of lib conservative, I guess that it's,
- 56:24Kayt: it's like a very individualistic sort of idea of how people react to,
- 56:32Kayt: you know, like some sort of disaster.
- 56:36Kayt: there's this book that like is after i watched the
- 56:39Kayt: mist i was like oh shit i have this book in my bookshelf
- 56:42Kayt: um called hope against hope which is like
- 56:45Kayt: a um like a marxist or
- 56:48Kayt: anarchist um conversation about like
- 56:52Kayt: uh global catastrophe um it's by the out of the woods collective and um They
- 56:58Kayt: talk about how like most of the ideas of how chaos happens after a like they
- 57:07Kayt: also say like there's no such thing as a natural disaster, really.
- 57:12Kayt: oh look at that cat um you know
- 57:15Kayt: because like most disasters are predicated on
- 57:18Kayt: something happening that like maybe we
- 57:20Kayt: did in this case like the natural you know
- 57:23Kayt: the disaster that like is cosmic was also caused by the military but that like
- 57:29Kayt: the idea that humans when there's a huge disaster like a hurricane or something
- 57:34Kayt: like that act in like factions and sort of like attack each other is a myth that.
- 57:43Kayt: The government or like the bureaucracy wants us
- 57:48Kayt: you know like kind of focuses on the media focuses
- 57:51Kayt: on it too like looting and stuff like that as a
- 57:54Kayt: way to like discourage solidarity and
- 57:57Kayt: mutual aid and shit good shit like that um and that like often the real help
- 58:06Kayt: is like within a community and like not without and like in the in this case
- 58:12Kayt: i feel like they do a lot of convert like,
- 58:15Kayt: philosophizing when they're talking about like whether they should
- 58:18Kayt: all leave or not and the only
- 58:22Kayt: one who believes that like people are
- 58:25Kayt: like tend towards mutual aid
- 58:29Kayt: rather than like competition is the
- 58:32Kayt: teacher and everyone else is just like yeah people fucking suck and like yes
- 58:38Kayt: there are a lot of people who suck but i do think that like the way this movie
- 58:43Kayt: sees humanity is pretty grim and nihilistic even though i like i.
- 58:49Evan: Mean i mean seth no no i was just gonna say it's kind of common amongst a lot of stephen king.
- 58:55Kayt: Yeah i think.
- 58:56Evan: To have this it's very these are his politics unfortunately and so that's what.
- 59:01Kayt: Yeah i mean he he was wearing a t-shirt that said let me speak the with a kamala on it so yeah.
- 59:13Brandon: I mean so i'm not inclined to disagree with you in regards.
- 59:17Kayt: To you.
- 59:18Brandon: Know people banding together and helping each other out but you know it's uh
- 59:21Brandon: i would say that there's there's there's two interpretations that i would make
- 59:25Brandon: of it where it's either you know staring at a mirror or it's like projecting
- 59:29Brandon: but either way it's no it's that's a manifestation of american exceptionalism like.
- 59:33Kayt: Would generally.
- 59:34Brandon: Would humanity band together to try and do it yes but would america intervene
- 59:39Brandon: to make goddamn sure that no one does fan together also yes.
- 59:43Kayt: Oh totally yeah we.
- 59:45Brandon: We are indoctrinated enough against our own nature i think that yeah i could really you
- 59:51Brandon: realistically see like in a disaster like that things
- 59:54Brandon: absolutely falling apart actually i kind of feel like it starts
- 59:57Brandon: to come out in the wash in like bigger things like when they're natural disasters
- 1:00:00Brandon: people look out for each other but yeah i think if you cram like 10 people into
- 1:00:05Brandon: a small building together under truly horrific circumstances because my talent
- 1:00:10Brandon: as i've gotten older is to start to be better able to actually imagine myself
- 1:00:15Brandon: in a situation like that and not like oh if i were,
- 1:00:19Brandon: in a zombie apocalypse i'd just kick all their asses but more
- 1:00:22Brandon: in the like uh if i were in a zombie apocalypse like you
- 1:00:24Brandon: don't have a conceptualization of it
- 1:00:27Brandon: being a zombie apocalypse so from your perspective you actually are just having
- 1:00:31Brandon: to kill your peers are you capable of doing that and i think your average person
- 1:00:35Brandon: isn't but the dialogue is always like oh i would just do this so like in a situation
- 1:00:40Brandon: like that like we when you really imagine yourself in it like Like,
- 1:00:43Brandon: I know my reaction would be like,
- 1:00:45Brandon: we have to fucking help each other out because that shit is wild out there.
- 1:00:51Brandon: But yeah, I mean, like you, you suddenly your entire world has ended.
- 1:00:54Brandon: So what do you have left the people in the room with you?
- 1:00:57Brandon: Yeah, I don't know what point I was making. I kind of went on a tangent there.
- 1:01:00Kayt: I think that's a good point. And then, like, I think, you know,
- 1:01:04Kayt: you mentioned at the beginning, the Mrs.
- 1:01:07Kayt: is Carmody character and how like maybe she was there's, there's a case for
- 1:01:12Kayt: her being right all along that like, this is,
- 1:01:16Kayt: I think she said like this, you know, the end comes in is coming in miss not in fire.
- 1:01:23Kayt: And like it very well could be the end. I mean, it's the end of something.
- 1:01:29Kayt: And like, even though everyone talks about her being crazy throughout the movie, um,
- 1:01:36Kayt: people do get killed sort of according to
- 1:01:39Kayt: their sins or like according to like what they do wrong in a lot of cases you
- 1:01:44Kayt: know like the bat the young guy gets killed first because he has like a sense
- 1:01:50Kayt: of like like sort of an out of uh like an exaggerated sense of like masculinity and like
- 1:01:59Kayt: uh i can't think of the word it's
- 1:02:02Kayt: like one of the deadly sins right sure
- 1:02:06Kayt: yeah let's yeah like he and
- 1:02:09Kayt: like he gets killed for that and then like there's the guy who's like when he
- 1:02:13Kayt: leaves he's who i think was like probably the coolest guy the biker dude who
- 1:02:18Kayt: was like i believe in god too but and not your bullshit god and then he gets torn in half like.
- 1:02:27Brandon: What does that say i feel like
- 1:02:30Brandon: uh i'm gonna get a bunch of blank stares but did
- 1:02:33Brandon: either of you ever happen to watch the tv show no
- 1:02:36Brandon: i haven't okay so there's a missed tv show and
- 1:02:39Brandon: they like it's i remember not liking it that
- 1:02:42Brandon: much but after three or four episodes i kind of got a
- 1:02:45Brandon: bit more into it it's definitely not quite up
- 1:02:48Brandon: to to snuff with the movie and you could tell that they were hoping for a season
- 1:02:51Brandon: two that they didn't get but they like flesh out the ladies cult a little bit
- 1:02:55Brandon: more because you know they had eight or ten episodes or whatever to do it and
- 1:02:59Brandon: i don't i haven't watched it recently enough to cite specifics but i'll say
- 1:03:03Brandon: that like i felt like the cult that she was building up in the tv show is a.
- 1:03:09Evan: To the point of whether she's right, I mean, her, maybe her way of describing
- 1:03:15Evan: it because of the sins of individuals, you know, might be wrong.
- 1:03:20Evan: Like, oh, you know, you don't believe in God or you're, you know,
- 1:03:23Evan: you drink or you commit adultery or whatever.
- 1:03:26Evan: That's what she's kind of saying has caused this. But really what's caused it
- 1:03:30Evan: is the sins of, you know, corporations, you know, the system beyond.
- 1:03:35Evan: It's like saying, you know, people who, if you don't use a paper straw,
- 1:03:39Evan: you know, you're destroying the environment.
- 1:03:40Evan: We're like, okay, well, no, actually, it's like Exxon, like dumping thousands
- 1:03:45Evan: of gallons of oil into the Pacific Ocean and being like, whoops.
- 1:03:49Evan: You know, so she does see that there is some evil or something,
- 1:03:55Evan: you know, that she can understand.
- 1:03:56Evan: But really, the evil is, you know, the military industrial complex and,
- 1:04:01Evan: you know, these corporations and lobbyists and all these terrible things.
- 1:04:04Evan: But it's kind of misdirected because that's how, as you said,
- 1:04:08Evan: Kate, this is kind of a conservative, liberal-ish take on it.
- 1:04:11Evan: It doesn't really actually show the reasons for the problems.
- 1:04:15Evan: It just kind of briefly mentions it because that older woman has that one line,
- 1:04:20Evan: but they don't ever really mention the military until near the end of the movie
- 1:04:25Evan: when they kind of have some information because those two military guys feel guilty.
- 1:04:30Evan: Which I have to ask, why is it that they didn't talk to them until like the third act?
- 1:04:34Evan: Like military dudes inside here.
- 1:04:37Kayt: And they're so unhelpful.
- 1:04:39Kayt: Like the other two guys, they were just like, it was like, does anybody,
- 1:04:43Kayt: Hey, you guys who are like training to do, you know, ostensibly like scary shit.
- 1:04:50Kayt: Do you want to help us? And they're kind of like.
- 1:04:52Brandon: I mean, I feel like that's a
- 1:04:55Brandon: pretty spot on analysis that the guys in the military are fucking useless.
- 1:04:58Kayt: Yeah.
- 1:04:59Evan: Yeah. I guess at that point, I mean, maybe it's, I mean, I get that it has,
- 1:05:03Evan: you know, they needed to not know that information until later.
- 1:05:06Evan: and they had the guy, you know, kill himself because he's so,
- 1:05:08Evan: you know, guilt-stricken.
- 1:05:10Evan: But if he was guilt-stricken that whole time, maybe, like, help the people?
- 1:05:13Evan: I don't know. Like, you think that his, I don't know, military helping people,
- 1:05:17Evan: you know, he should have brought some freedom to the grocery store and democracy
- 1:05:22Evan: or something. I don't know.
- 1:05:23Brandon: My mental image of that is there being a small automotive section with a few
- 1:05:27Brandon: things of oil and he just sets up camp around there.
- 1:05:34Evan: There for a second for a second i didn't get it and then when i got it yeah he invades.
- 1:05:40Kayt: The oil aisle.
- 1:05:42Brandon: Everybody else is worried about food and he's good because he's got like three gallons of oil.
- 1:05:49Evan: He's stealing he's stealing everyone's jewelry to like melt down to build i
- 1:05:54Evan: don't know Something like in The Fog.
- 1:05:56Evan: Build a giant crucifix or whatever. But yeah, the...
- 1:06:01Evan: I don't know. That's... You could... I don't know.
- 1:06:04Evan: The one thing I did note when I was watching it, to me, it felt like the TV
- 1:06:10Evan: show The Stranger Things is directly based on...
- 1:06:14Evan: like the concept of this movie in
- 1:06:16Evan: that you have especially the first season where you or maybe multiple seasons
- 1:06:20Evan: where you have the military accidentally opening a portal to another world and
- 1:06:24Evan: like creatures coming through or like people going through i mean i don't know
- 1:06:28Evan: that this was an original thought in this necessarily but i seem like a very
- 1:06:33Evan: similar type of concept i.
- 1:06:34Brandon: See that no yeah i can see that.
- 1:06:36Evan: I don't know yeah the first couple seasons i like the stranger things i I haven't
- 1:06:41Evan: seen the most recent one.
- 1:06:42Kayt: I only saw the first. I kind of gave up on it. Yeah, I only saw the first one.
- 1:06:45Kayt: But yeah, like aesthetically, it's very 80s. But then, yeah, you're right.
- 1:06:48Kayt: It is the whole idea of it is that like the military is playing around with
- 1:06:54Kayt: lots of secret things, which I feel like is always an like I love military conspiracy stuff.
- 1:07:01Kayt: stuff and like because it's so plausible you know like i'm reading um that book
- 1:07:08Kayt: chaos right now about like the cia and charles manson and you're just like yeah.
- 1:07:14Evan: I mean.
- 1:07:15Kayt: It sounds like a conspiracy theory but it also sounds true because they're you
- 1:07:20Kayt: know it's like mk ultra we know is like absolutely true i.
- 1:07:24Evan: Was about to say that like if if that could be true like what else is it really
- 1:07:27Evan: that plausible to be true at this point that's.
- 1:07:29Brandon: Why when people do like whenever you meet a real conspiracy theorist i just
- 1:07:33Brandon: i don't know how to talk to them because i'm like they admit it when they do
- 1:07:36Brandon: stuff there's a paper trail every fucking time yeah it's true.
- 1:07:39Evan: Yeah just gotta wait 20 years or whatever and they'll they'll tell you i'm pretty
- 1:07:44Evan: uh pretty plain uh pretty plain what they've done but one other so one other
- 1:07:49Evan: thing since you can't mention the like the individual,
- 1:07:52Evan: kind of the individual nature of some of the people in the store like that seemed
- 1:07:55Evan: also Also, where the biggest conflict, aside from sort of like the Mrs.
- 1:08:03Evan: Carmody, the sort of religious fanatic, was between the Andre Brouwer character
- 1:08:07Evan: and sort of the Tom Jane character is that they both were kind of like wanted
- 1:08:12Evan: to be the sort of like the...
- 1:08:14Evan: the savior or the person who was doing it. But it did seem more like that Thomas
- 1:08:19Evan: Jane just genuinely wanted to help.
- 1:08:21Evan: He had his kid there. He wanted to do whatever it took to do the things.
- 1:08:25Evan: But then Andre Brouwer is this big shot elite and kind of quotes attorney from
- 1:08:32Evan: New York City, presumably.
- 1:08:34Evan: And they kind of created this kind
- 1:08:37Evan: of rift between them and eventually gets himself killed because of it but they
- 1:08:41Evan: all seem to have they they claim to have like the group of people in mind like
- 1:08:46Evan: oh we want to do everything but really they all just want themselves to be safe
- 1:08:50Evan: probably including you know the the tom jinker he wants him and his son really to be safe and if it
- 1:08:56Evan: if he can help some other people kind of in the meantime i don't know maybe
- 1:08:59Evan: i'm maybe i'm doing him dirty it's.
- 1:09:00Brandon: A metaphor for communism they're pretending to want to help other people to better themselves.
- 1:09:08Evan: But I don't know. Maybe, maybe his character is like genuinely like a good person.
- 1:09:12Evan: You know, he's trying to help the people.
- 1:09:14Evan: It does seem like that. And he gets pretty upset when, you know,
- 1:09:17Evan: he's trying to protect the, like the younger guy who gets, you know, pulled out early on.
- 1:09:23Evan: But whereas kind of the Andre Brouwer character really doesn't care about anyone else.
- 1:09:27Evan: They just want to get out of there with, you know, presumably a gun if they
- 1:09:31Evan: can get one or a weapon and then get the fuck out of Dodge. Yeah.
- 1:09:34Kayt: You know, the other thing that like I kind of focused on more this time watching
- 1:09:38Kayt: it is like at the beginning, there's also that woman who is like insists that
- 1:09:43Kayt: she needs to go out and get her kids and like make sure they're OK.
- 1:09:47Kayt: And no one helps her. And she like kind of keeps calling them out like none
- 1:09:53Kayt: of you are going to come with me.
- 1:09:55Kayt: None of you are going to check on my kids with me or like walk me to my car
- 1:09:59Kayt: and everyone just kind of looks away and they're all like, well,
- 1:10:02Kayt: I got to like be here, you know, and I don't know if that's fair or not fair,
- 1:10:09Kayt: but like it is a real sort of like tragic moment that you just like walks out and like disappears.
- 1:10:15Evan: Years yeah they like she asked a bunch of the people in it who later are like
- 1:10:22Evan: you know genuinely trying to help people but they wouldn't help her and isn't
- 1:10:26Evan: that um uh what is her name um,
- 1:10:30Evan: she's in the walking dead right melissa mcbride i think there's actually a bunch
- 1:10:34Evan: of actors in this who are also in the walking dust oh.
- 1:10:37Brandon: Yeah that is melissa mcbride.
- 1:10:38Evan: Laurie laurie holden who's also Also in it is in The Walking Dead.
- 1:10:41Evan: And then also the guy, Jeffrey DeMunn, who's the guy who like runs into the
- 1:10:48Evan: store and is like, there's something in the mist.
- 1:10:50Kayt: Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:51Evan: That guy also is in, I don't know how much of it he was in.
- 1:10:55Kayt: He's a very like, oh, that guy, guy. There's a lot of those in this movie. Like so many.
- 1:11:01Evan: It is. It is. They were talking about it in like the behind the scenes,
- 1:11:05Evan: how the cast is sort of like an ensemble cast.
- 1:11:07Evan: and that there's no really one star, just kind of a bunch of people that kind
- 1:11:12Evan: of all kind of play their part in it. But I think that's probably true.
- 1:11:17Evan: I mean, there's no like super...
- 1:11:20Evan: I guess Thomas Jane is probably the biggest one from I think of his movies he's been in a lot of big.
- 1:11:27Evan: I guess he's kind of a big star. I don't know. Has he been in anything recently?
- 1:11:30Brandon: I'm not good at gauging how big of a star somebody is sometimes.
- 1:11:33Brandon: Because if they're in movies that I'm watching, I assume they have failed.
- 1:11:40Kayt: I just always think of him as he plays himself in Arrested Development,
- 1:11:45Kayt: which is why I'll never forget his name.
- 1:11:47Kayt: because he's like Lindsay thinks he's a homeless guy and he's like I'm Tom Jane,
- 1:11:53Kayt: and yeah so I'm like I will always remember his name I think.
- 1:11:59Brandon: Of him as the guy from The Expanse.
- 1:12:01Kayt: Oh yeah also.
- 1:12:02Evan: Yeah the guy.
- 1:12:04Kayt: In the fedora from The Expanse he's also in Deep Blue Sea.
- 1:12:08Evan: Which I.
- 1:12:09Kayt: Recently watched again I.
- 1:12:11Evan: Think he was also I never actually saw the show but I think he was on the show called Hung
- 1:12:16Evan: which i think was like an hbo show from
- 1:12:19Evan: i don't know 10 or 12 years ago i think i only know because i mentioned it in
- 1:12:21Evan: the in the in the previous uh in the um the notes of but he also was in a bunch
- 1:12:27Evan: of like decent movies and when i say decent movies i'd say actually like you
- 1:12:31Evan: said um movies that you know actually i just looked at this he was in the buffy
- 1:12:36Evan: the vampire slayer oh that's.
- 1:12:38Kayt: Right yeah i that's i should that should be my first thing that i say yeah.
- 1:12:43Brandon: I'm really disappointed in you you right now.
- 1:12:45Kayt: I know we're very you know tv show centric but we should talk.
- 1:12:50Evan: About the film.
- 1:12:51Kayt: At some point.
- 1:12:52Evan: Apparently he was also in boogie nights oh yeah he
- 1:12:55Evan: was yeah now that i look at these movies i'm like oh yeah that's like it's as
- 1:13:00Evan: you said it's like oh that guy's in it yeah he's like one of the that guys i
- 1:13:03Evan: guess you could say yeah the other person who was in it uh that i was thinking
- 1:13:07Evan: is the like the guy who played the the guy like the coverall coveralls he's in like a lot of also
- 1:13:13Evan: random kinds of things. But yeah. Um,
- 1:13:17Evan: I don't think there's any other notes I had about the movie.
- 1:13:20Evan: Oh, I guess we should, again, I guess talk about the ending.
- 1:13:23Evan: You know, this is probably the furthest in a podcast I've gotten without accidentally
- 1:13:29Evan: sort of, I know we've talked about the spoilers in every episode.
- 1:13:32Evan: But the ending of this is pretty brutal where you have the, you know,
- 1:13:37Evan: I think five of them end up escaping or six of them because there's five bullets in the gun.
- 1:13:43Evan: Right? Is that right? Five? five?
- 1:13:45Brandon: I think there's five of them and four bullets. Yeah.
- 1:13:49Evan: Four bullets. Okay. Four bullets. That's right.
- 1:13:51Brandon: I think there's three in the backseat and him in the frontseat with a passenger.
- 1:13:55Evan: With a passenger. Who might that be?
- 1:13:59Brandon: I don't know.
- 1:14:01Evan: Might be his little son, unfortunately. His sweet, sweet son.
- 1:14:05Evan: Yeah. At least they had the courtesy of not showing.
- 1:14:09Evan: They just had the sound of the bullets ringing out from above.
- 1:14:13Evan: above and like i guess they're showing like the monster sort of
- 1:14:16Evan: like walking through the you know like jurassic park
- 1:14:20Evan: kind of shit like they're just kind of like roaming through the
- 1:14:22Evan: countryside just i don't know doing their
- 1:14:25Evan: thing and he kills them all and it's it's the the
- 1:14:28Evan: book ending is they basically just drive away and
- 1:14:31Evan: they not you don't know what happens they hear on the radio like
- 1:14:34Evan: something about hartford and presumably they're going to just find
- 1:14:37Evan: another place where it might might be safe but you never find out and then this
- 1:14:41Evan: you have him shooting all the other people not having a bullet for himself gets
- 1:14:46Evan: out of the car and like even this the first time i thought i'm like oh what's
- 1:14:50Evan: he how's he gonna kill himself is he gonna like get one of the monsters to eat
- 1:14:52Evan: him and then you're like yeah fuck so.
- 1:14:57Brandon: I feel like it is a relatively like well-established trope in certain genres
- 1:15:01Brandon: especially a post-apocalypse like uh you're you're,
- 1:15:06Brandon: breaking into a house looking for supplies and you find the couple
- 1:15:09Brandon: that killed themselves in the bedroom because they couldn't face whatever apocalypse
- 1:15:12Brandon: is waiting zombie apocalypse I have never seen one that even came close to being
- 1:15:18Brandon: as like gut wrenching as this one is like it's yeah he fucking kills his son
- 1:15:24Brandon: and then gets rescued Jesus fucking Christ no.
- 1:15:27Kayt: It is so fucking bleak and like I it's kind of the same thing with the movie
- 1:15:32Kayt: the ending like I I I like the ending for what it does to me emotionally,
- 1:15:39Kayt: but I'm not sure I like the implication, I guess, that like the military that
- 1:15:48Kayt: fucked them all up gets to also rescue them and be the heroes.
- 1:15:52Kayt: Like that's so nihilistic. I don't know.
- 1:15:55Brandon: I wouldn't argue that it's not nihilistic, but I'm not going to argue that they were rescued either.
- 1:16:00Brandon: Yeah. Four people died and one person is never going to be okay again.
- 1:16:04Kayt: That's true i mean he is not i i would just at that point be like don't take
- 1:16:10Kayt: me you know like i don't know just like there's no.
- 1:16:12Brandon: Path forward for that man.
- 1:16:14Kayt: Yeah let the behemoth or whatever actually.
- 1:16:17Brandon: The arrival of the military in in the confines of the story condemn him.
- 1:16:22Kayt: Yeah because.
- 1:16:23Evan: Like and the thing that's also crazy what's up i'm sorry i was just i was just saying it's also.
- 1:16:27Kayt: Also.
- 1:16:28Evan: You go.
- 1:16:29Brandon: I lost my point. Oh, my God.
- 1:16:33Kayt: Diabolical.
- 1:16:34Evan: I was just going to mention that it's also such a...
- 1:16:39Evan: like a brutal shot of the woman where we
- 1:16:41Evan: were just talking about who you know who the now i'm
- 1:16:45Evan: forgetting the actress's name who is in the walking dead who leaves to get her
- 1:16:49Evan: son and her kids at home she's they show her very distinctly on the little rescue
- 1:16:53Evan: military shot meaning that she got free so theoretically whoever had gone with
- 1:16:58Evan: her if if uh you know jane had gone with
- 1:17:02Evan: him with it with his kid they would have been alive maybe yeah um it's amazing
- 1:17:08Evan: that she survived like it's it almost seems like that like defies belief almost i.
- 1:17:14Brandon: Mean it's not really amazing it's just it's fiction.
- 1:17:16Evan: Yeah i.
- 1:17:17Kayt: Guess it's just coincidence like she just happened to make it through the mist like and.
- 1:17:24Evan: Nobody noticed.
- 1:17:24Kayt: Her or whatever i don't know or like they did say that like things get hinkier at night.
- 1:17:31Kayt: So I don't know. Maybe she had like a, just like a, a break and didn't realize it.
- 1:17:37Evan: Yeah. The little spider things or the whatever else decided they,
- 1:17:42Evan: they're eating the military dudes in the, which actually have all the people
- 1:17:46Evan: who died, the military people who were in the, the pharmacy definitely were
- 1:17:50Evan: the ones who deserved it most.
- 1:17:51Evan: They should have, hopefully all of them die later of like some horrific side
- 1:17:55Evan: effect of the, all the Agent Orange they were shooting in to kill all the monsters.
- 1:18:03Evan: But somehow they were easily able to then defeat the,
- 1:18:07Evan: Why were they not ready for them when they first opened the portal to then just like torch them?
- 1:18:11Brandon: Again, if you like put yourself in the movie, you can try to open up like parallel
- 1:18:16Brandon: universes and not necessarily expect cosmic horrors on the other side.
- 1:18:20Kayt: True.
- 1:18:21Brandon: Like scientifically speaking, that would probably be the last thing that would actually happen.
- 1:18:25Brandon: It would probably like just be some really innocuous like phenomenon of some
- 1:18:29Brandon: sort. and then when you're actually given uh you know chaos dinosaurs uh it's
- 1:18:35Brandon: it was probably somewhat of a surprise so.
- 1:18:38Evan: You're saying it could have been it could have been a fog but instead they got the.
- 1:18:41Kayt: Right the fog yeah if it was if they opened up the fog portal it's just zombie
- 1:18:47Kayt: sailors and then they but unfortunately they opened up the mist lovecraft portal yeah.
- 1:18:55Evan: They got misted instead of fog.
- 1:18:57Kayt: Yeah which would have been much less painful worse yeah
- 1:19:01Kayt: it seems like i do love that like
- 1:19:03Kayt: you know well actually you know what this isn't true
- 1:19:06Kayt: but like the part where they they kind of
- 1:19:09Kayt: like reveal bigger and bigger and bigger
- 1:19:12Kayt: things you know which i always enjoy it's
- 1:19:15Kayt: like a very like you said jurassic park kind of thing
- 1:19:18Kayt: where like um you get to see
- 1:19:21Kayt: like the cycle of life in the mist also you know that like the bugs are just
- 1:19:27Kayt: food for like the bigger weirder things and then like eventually you see the
- 1:19:32Kayt: giant terrifying like t-rex at the end you know yeah.
- 1:19:39Evan: The the reveal of those is kind
- 1:19:41Evan: of cool with the the way the monsters are shown it's It's unfortunate.
- 1:19:45Evan: Actually, the ones at the end were slightly less annoying CGI-wise, maybe.
- 1:19:52Evan: Maybe you're just at the end, you're kind of like, oh, man, hopefully they're
- 1:19:56Evan: not going to get away. They're screwed.
- 1:19:59Evan: They may as well all just do it. I mean, the other thing, too,
- 1:20:02Evan: is why didn't they all just decide to exit the vehicle and then just get eaten together?
- 1:20:06Evan: They could have just all died as one, but instead they had to go the individualist route.
- 1:20:11Kayt: Yeah.
- 1:20:12Evan: Not really, maybe.
- 1:20:12Kayt: They could have all been together in a dinosaur's tummy.
- 1:20:16Evan: Or they could have, you know, gotten...
- 1:20:20Evan: the spider webbed or whatever the the thing or actually probably the worst way
- 1:20:25Evan: to go was the the like the checkout girl oh yeah that's got like punctured and
- 1:20:31Evan: just like you know got like,
- 1:20:33Evan: over botox overload to the face.
- 1:20:35Brandon: You're really naming a lot of reasons why they would just kill themselves yeah
- 1:20:39Brandon: i'm not gonna say that's what i would do i'm gonna say that if if i am just
- 1:20:42Brandon: given a stark choice between like any of those deaths even being like grabbed
- 1:20:47Brandon: by a tentacle and just bludgeon to death or a quick shot to the head scientifically
- 1:20:52Brandon: a shot to the head is just done yeah it's.
- 1:20:55Kayt: A good point yeah because they mass suffering
- 1:20:58Kayt: yeah like each animal or whatever creature contains like sort of multiple horrors
- 1:21:04Kayt: because you know it's like oh the spider can jump on you and like pinch you
- 1:21:10Kayt: or do whatever but it can also like put you in a web it also has like webs made of acid,
- 1:21:18Kayt: you know, that like lacerate you and immediately like just like your leg gets necrotic immediately.
- 1:21:25Kayt: Like they have so many abilities.
- 1:21:27Evan: Yeah, they could just keep you alive for days and days and you would just suffer.
- 1:21:31Evan: So I guess I guess you're right. All right, Brandon.
- 1:21:33Brandon: I'm not leaning into that too hard because I'm more of the attitude of like,
- 1:21:36Brandon: I'm only going to kill myself if my mental health issues get to that point,
- 1:21:40Brandon: not because I like can't survive in a situation.
- 1:21:43Brandon: I'll go down fighting, but I understand that sort of gut feeling of like,
- 1:21:49Brandon: well, it's, it's really, it's the, it's the foundation of cosmic horror.
- 1:21:52Brandon: It's, it's in, in, in like unimaginable horrors.
- 1:21:57Brandon: Like, do you, do you take the thing that is in, you know, the outcome and it's
- 1:22:02Brandon: painless or do you take the outcome that is unknown and potentially horror beyond imagination?
- 1:22:09Kayt: Yeah.
- 1:22:10Brandon: Yeah.
- 1:22:10Kayt: And you can't reason with any
- 1:22:12Kayt: of those creatures. It's not like a vampire where they're even humanoid.
- 1:22:18Kayt: You don't know what kind of world they just came from, even, with cosmic horror.
- 1:22:25Evan: Yeah, that's true. Yeah, I don't blame them.
- 1:22:30Evan: But it would have been tough to fight. Because initially, they just see little flying bugs and things.
- 1:22:36Evan: But then they see 20 foot, I don't know how tall they were, taller than the
- 1:22:40Evan: trees, just these giant monsters.
- 1:22:42Evan: And yeah, that's a low, low prospects of survival, but maybe you got some chance.
- 1:22:48Evan: Maybe you can eventually get to another town. Maybe you can,
- 1:22:50Evan: I don't know, get a boat. I assume they're in Maine.
- 1:22:54Evan: They are. I guess it's written by Stephen King.
- 1:22:57Brandon: Of course it's in Maine.
- 1:22:57Kayt: But shot in like Shreve's port or something.
- 1:23:01Brandon: Basically the same thing. Yeah, sure.
- 1:23:05Brandon: Okay. Million dollar question. How much different would the ending have been
- 1:23:10Brandon: if he shot himself first and then everyone else found out there was only one bullet?
- 1:23:18Kayt: It would be a dark comedy.
- 1:23:25Brandon: I would need like three to five extra minutes before the army got there where
- 1:23:29Brandon: they're just panicking.
- 1:23:33Evan: That, that was a, if that ending, I don't think Stephen King would have been too.
- 1:23:39Brandon: I don't think I would be either, but it's making a joke about it. It lands pretty good.
- 1:23:46Kayt: Yeah.
- 1:23:47Evan: Yeah. I, uh, I think that's a good one.
- 1:23:51Kayt: If you had to pick which one of the creatures was going to kill you,
- 1:24:00Kayt: which one would you pick?
- 1:24:02Evan: What was the one that ripped the guy in half? Because it seems like that would
- 1:24:05Evan: be painful, but it wouldn't take long to die.
- 1:24:09Kayt: Yeah, that's just some sort of missed creature that I guess we never get to see, right?
- 1:24:13Evan: Yeah, that creature. Is that the same creature that also kills the younger guy
- 1:24:17Evan: in the back of the store, presumably, like a tentacled thing?
- 1:24:21Kayt: Maybe.
- 1:24:22Evan: I think as long as you don't – anything that doesn't eat you.
- 1:24:24Evan: Eating you would be the worst because you don't know if it eats you whole and
- 1:24:27Evan: then, I don't know, like the thing in the Star Wars where they just digest you
- 1:24:33Evan: for the next thousand years or something. You don't want that.
- 1:24:35Brandon: Yeah, but at some point, you suffocate or starve to death or something. Yeah.
- 1:24:39Kayt: I think the spider one would be the worst.
- 1:24:43Evan: By far. By far. I would go with just a giant creature in the mist,
- 1:24:48Evan: probably, if you're going with one.
- 1:24:49Brandon: Yeah, I feel like it's just going to squish you real fast.
- 1:24:51Kayt: Yeah, yeah, just step on me. That's fine. We're done.
- 1:24:54Evan: Yeah. I think they had other creatures they wanted to use or they had drawn
- 1:25:00Evan: or created that they never got to.
- 1:25:02Evan: But the ones they use are cool, even if they looked kind of shitty.
- 1:25:07Evan: The things flying around and the thing, yeah, it was still cool.
- 1:25:14Evan: But either way. Yeah.
- 1:25:17Brandon: Now that we've spoiled the end, the true horror of this movie was never in the monsters.
- 1:25:24Evan: It's in human nature. Is that what you're going to say?
- 1:25:27Brandon: No, it's the fact that that dude killed his son and then it had to live. That was the horror.
- 1:25:32Evan: Yeah. I don't think he's going to... I don't think... Yeah, I think you're saying,
- 1:25:35Evan: I don't think he would... He probably would look for a gun pretty soon after.
- 1:25:38Evan: Isn't the very final shot him like...
- 1:25:39Evan: He drops to the ground and he's just screaming. He can't comprehend.
- 1:25:44Kayt: The horror i mean talk about yeah like horrors beyond comprehension it's like
- 1:25:49Kayt: killing your son thinking you're saving him and then realizing that like you
- 1:25:55Kayt: guys would have been fine fine i mean you know relatively probably.
- 1:26:00Brandon: Fine other than like you know now like sure you have to live with the knowledge
- 1:26:05Brandon: that there's like this other dimension full of horrors but.
- 1:26:08Kayt: Like just don't.
- 1:26:08Brandon: Open that door again.
- 1:26:09Kayt: Yeah well.
- 1:26:10Evan: I mean he could he could just turn to you know online therapy.
- 1:26:14Kayt: Afterwards.
- 1:26:17Evan: To uh to get over his.
- 1:26:19Kayt: Trauma or.
- 1:26:20Evan: Sorry that's a good callback i.
- 1:26:23Kayt: Feel like he becomes yeah that's all yeah like in the mist too he's just like
- 1:26:29Kayt: uh it's all about vengeance he's just killing like various military like heads of the military yeah.
- 1:26:37Evan: He's like he turns into like a gorilla you know, just killing people. Not a gorilla.
- 1:26:43Evan: Covert assassin or something.
- 1:26:46Brandon: No, the mist, too. He is a drooling-on-himself, Thorazined-up mess in a white room.
- 1:26:52Brandon: And then the mist hits, and they have to find him, because he's the one who
- 1:26:56Brandon: dealt with it last time. And it just gets unhinged from there.
- 1:27:01Kayt: Yeah, they have to pull him out.
- 1:27:03Evan: He's like Brad Pitt in 12 Monkeys. Well, not quite exactly.
- 1:27:06Kayt: Or Nancy in The Craft.
- 1:27:08Evan: Too. too which is oh.
- 1:27:10Kayt: Oh there's a craft too yeah it's not great it's like it's like the craft made
- 1:27:15Kayt: for i mean maybe it is good i feel like it's an okay movie just like not for
- 1:27:20Kayt: me because it's made for like gen z teenagers you know.
- 1:27:25Evan: I didn't know there was a sequel yeah.
- 1:27:27Kayt: David dukovny is in it.
- 1:27:29Evan: Oh it's recent yeah oh man I like David and I like David Duchovny come on man he's good.
- 1:27:38Kayt: At it he's a powerful warlock.
- 1:27:43Evan: Really you may have just sold me it made 2 million dollars on a budget of 18
- 1:27:50Evan: million well I don't know it.
- 1:27:54Brandon: Was an artistic success if not a financial no it wasn't.
- 1:27:59Evan: Oh Kylie Spiney Kylie Spaney Spiney I don't know how to pronounce the last name
- 1:28:03Evan: was in it i didn't realize that well.
- 1:28:05Brandon: I mean i.
- 1:28:05Evan: Assumed you.
- 1:28:06Brandon: Didn't know that since five minutes ago you didn't.
- 1:28:08Evan: Know this movie existed anything you learn about it right now.
- 1:28:11Brandon: Is going to be a surprise that's true.
- 1:28:13Evan: That's true literally everything is the david dacovny part yeah that's the best
- 1:28:20Evan: maybe i'll have to see this movie yeah i'm not i mean i like the craft i mean
- 1:28:25Evan: you're not gonna beat that i'm.
- 1:28:26Kayt: Not like endorsing it i don't think it's a good movie but I do think it's like
- 1:28:30Kayt: a woke witchcraft movie, I guess.
- 1:28:35Brandon: What era is that? When did this movie come out?
- 1:28:38Kayt: It's recent. It's very recent.
- 1:28:40Evan: Four years ago. Four years ago.
- 1:28:45Evan: 2020, we're in kind of the era of the like, well, I guess we're still in that
- 1:28:50Evan: era of just digging up movies from 20, 25 years ago and just being like, oh, and here's a sequel.
- 1:28:57Evan: Maybe we'll end with a better recommendation. So you don't maybe recommend The Craft 2,
- 1:29:03Evan: but given that we're getting close to Halloween season,
- 1:29:07Evan: which I would argue you could watch Halloween movies all year,
- 1:29:11Evan: but if you were to pick one,
- 1:29:13Evan: or you can pick more than one of a movie, maybe you would recommend to the listeners
- 1:29:19Evan: for this upcoming spooky season.
- 1:29:24Evan: So I put you on the spot there.
- 1:29:25Brandon: I'm definitely the guy that like, if you ask me like my favorite bands,
- 1:29:29Brandon: I can't even think of what type of music I listen to. I know.
- 1:29:32Kayt: I do the same.
- 1:29:33Evan: Yeah.
- 1:29:34Kayt: I'm like, what's a movie?
- 1:29:37Kayt: Um, I mean the first craft, how about that?
- 1:29:41Evan: Yeah, no, that's a good one, which I think some people forget about.
- 1:29:44Kayt: Oh, it's so excellent. And the music is so good. It's so of an era.
- 1:29:49Brandon: Um, I don't know. I can only think of like the things that are on my to watch
- 1:29:53Brandon: list. Oh, um, I was thinking about re-watching Possession this weekend.
- 1:29:57Kayt: Oh, yeah.
- 1:29:59Evan: That's a good one.
- 1:30:00Kayt: Always a good one.
- 1:30:01Brandon: You mentioned body horror earlier. I love body horror.
- 1:30:05Kayt: Yeah. I guess also in preparation for seeing Alien Romulus, you could watch the OG and Alien too.
- 1:30:16Brandon: Yeah.
- 1:30:17Kayt: Aliens.
- 1:30:17Brandon: Aliens is one of the greats.
- 1:30:19Kayt: Yeah.
- 1:30:19Brandon: I mean, the original.
- 1:30:20Evan: Yeah. that's a yeah i would i would say even though they're not nearly as good
- 1:30:25Evan: as the first two i also recently did an episode on the like the two prequels
- 1:30:31Evan: prometheus isn't my favorite but alien covenant was actually better than i remember
- 1:30:35Evan: it i rewatched it last week and had the same experience,
- 1:30:40Evan: it yeah i like i remember when i first saw it thinking it sucked and then i
- 1:30:43Evan: watch it again i'm like oh this actually is maybe i just expected it to be like
- 1:30:47Evan: as good as the first one so like if If you're going to prepare to go see Alien
- 1:30:51Evan: Romulus and you want to just watch all of them,
- 1:30:54Evan: you could just watch those and maybe skip Alien 3.
- 1:30:57Brandon: Yeah also halloween 3 is a great that's a great halloween movie oh.
- 1:31:01Evan: That i just watched it actually recently maybe i don't know two weeks ago and
- 1:31:06Evan: i was thinking the same thing thinking you know that is uh one of those what
- 1:31:11Evan: like kind of like an anthology vibe where it's you know the same kind of universe but not really.
- 1:31:15Brandon: Well uh originally halloween 1 and 2 were supposed
- 1:31:18Brandon: to be like direct sequels but everything else after that was supposed to
- 1:31:21Brandon: be anthology and then halloween three did so badly that they're like no no more
- 1:31:26Brandon: michael myers please but yeah the original intention was it was going to be
- 1:31:30Brandon: a different thing every uh every time and oh i didn't realize that no one liked
- 1:31:34Brandon: halloween three until like five years ago or something i mean it was longer ago i didn't.
- 1:31:38Kayt: See it yeah yeah there are so many yeah there are so many movies that were like
- 1:31:45Kayt: big stinkers in the 70s and 80s that i feel like people are looking at now and
- 1:31:50Kayt: they're like what what are you talking about? This movie was amazing.
- 1:31:53Kayt: Like, um, Oh, another one. It's not Halloween really, but man Hunter. I love that movie.
- 1:32:00Evan: I, yeah, I've, I've, I did a, a one on, um, man Hunter double feature with silence
- 1:32:06Evan: of the lambs. And I watched man Hunter for the first time since,
- 1:32:09Evan: I don't know, like 15 years ago when I've remembered not liking it.
- 1:32:12Evan: I'm like, Holy shit. What was I thinking?
- 1:32:14Evan: I've watched it. I think two or three times, you know, before that,
- 1:32:17Evan: I'm like, I'll watch it again tomorrow. A movie is the movie riffs. Right.
- 1:32:20Brandon: I've never seen it, so now I've got to get on that.
- 1:32:22Kayt: Oh, yeah, do it.
- 1:32:23Evan: Yeah, it's the first Michael Mann, first adaptation of the Hannibal Lecter.
- 1:32:30Brandon: I know what it is, I just, I've never seen it.
- 1:32:32Evan: Oh, yeah. I would highly recommend that one.
- 1:32:37Kayt: It's so high 80s, just amazing lighting.
- 1:32:42Kayt: The music is great and weird and synthy. And yeah, that's really good.
- 1:32:47Evan: Yeah, and what's-his-name is Tom Noonan is also just top tier in this.
- 1:32:56Evan: He's like the – he plays the Tooth Fairy, the bad guy.
- 1:32:59Kayt: Oh, yeah. He's another great that guy.
- 1:33:03Evan: Yeah. He's in a bunch of – well, I guess he's in a bunch of Michael Mann movies,
- 1:33:08Evan: but yeah. I would say, yeah.
- 1:33:10Evan: No one has ever gone wrong watching Manhunter. so i would um i would um second that one but.
- 1:33:18Brandon: One of my vans was almost a tv show manhunt no my oh it's a mindhunter i don't know mindhunter.
- 1:33:26Evan: Mindhunter was that one that.
- 1:33:26Brandon: Got canceled right that was my van almost got in that movie oh that's cool um
- 1:33:33Brandon: there's a small film industry here i've worked in it a little bit and i walked
- 1:33:36Brandon: outside to the grocery store to someone putting a note under my...
- 1:33:40Brandon: It's from the... My van's from the 60s. Oh.
- 1:33:42Brandon: And they needed like period correct stuff. And she was like,
- 1:33:45Brandon: we would really like... But I assumed it would pay like $20 a day or something
- 1:33:49Brandon: stupid. So I never followed it up.
- 1:33:50Brandon: And then once I got into film, they were like, no, they'll give you like a few
- 1:33:53Brandon: hundred dollars a day. I'm like, God damn it.
- 1:33:55Evan: Damn.
- 1:33:56Brandon: Yeah, whatever.
- 1:33:56Kayt: Now you know.
- 1:33:58Evan: You missed your...
- 1:33:59Brandon: So it's the rule of my cars is they can only cost me money.
- 1:34:05Evan: But yeah, Katie... I just said Katie. That's okay. I meant Kate. Apologies.
- 1:34:09Evan: But Kate and Brendan, I appreciate you coming on to talk about weather phenomenons.
- 1:34:16Evan: Mists and fogs.
- 1:34:18Kayt: Yeah, it's a good time.
- 1:34:20Evan: I said. I promise no one will have to hear any more weather related jokes,
- 1:34:25Evan: except for in the opening when I record that later. And you'll be,
- 1:34:30Evan: bombarded with i.
- 1:34:30Brandon: Don't care whether i do or not.
- 1:34:35Evan: You forgot to wait for me to drink drink some water there
- 1:34:38Evan: i would have spit it out all over the
- 1:34:41Evan: screen unfortunately but yeah so and i guess um where can well you already told
- 1:34:47Evan: everyone about your podcast but uh i assume they can obviously find them on
- 1:34:52Evan: any podcast platform but do you have Have any other places or your own social
- 1:34:59Evan: media you'd want to share.
- 1:35:00Evan: And I'll also put them in the links as well, the notes, links.
- 1:35:06Brandon: Follow Cars and Comrades on any relevant social media.
- 1:35:10Brandon: Our account's good enough that my friends don't realize I have a podcast and
- 1:35:14Brandon: they're like, oh, this seems relevant to you and send me memes from our account.
- 1:35:18Kayt: That's cool.
- 1:35:19Evan: That's fair.
- 1:35:19Kayt: That's my dream of having your podcast. cat yes i would love to have.
- 1:35:26Brandon: A friend um.
- 1:35:27Kayt: It's yeah it's gonna happen i think someday it.
- 1:35:33Brandon: Took me a while you'll get there thank.
- 1:35:35Kayt: You but yeah like a podcast a podcast uh twitter um handle that like posts interesting
- 1:35:43Kayt: things besides just like marketing your podcast.
- 1:35:47Brandon: Is pretty amazing in real time i just
- 1:35:50Brandon: realized that okay every presidential cycle i tried
- 1:35:53Brandon: to immediately get a twitter account with a
- 1:35:56Brandon: name like uh vp tim walls or something okay that seems really official with
- 1:36:01Brandon: like this long drawn out plan uh where i'm gonna try and get a bunch of followers
- 1:36:05Brandon: to for people thinking it's that account and then turn it into like something
- 1:36:08Brandon: just real weird but i just realized i forgot to do it this time they've already
- 1:36:12Brandon: announced uh walls and i fucking forgot god damn it no.
- 1:36:16Kayt: I'm sure you could find something i.
- 1:36:18Brandon: Lost the the like login for it but I used to have VP Kamala Harris or something like that.
- 1:36:25Brandon: I had Tim Kaine. I've done this a few times.
- 1:36:29Brandon: never works out good bit i.
- 1:36:31Evan: Think i i think i think you've actually done it you're just you're you're is
- 1:36:35Evan: this part of the bit where you tell everyone that you didn't do it but you've
- 1:36:37Evan: already done it no just to hide this is the part of the bit where i'm really bad at.
- 1:36:42Brandon: The internet and i'll come up with a good idea and then just forget to do it
- 1:36:45Brandon: yeah i've never even logged into our meme account.
- 1:36:48Evan: Fair enough um.
- 1:36:51Kayt: Yeah you can just find me uh on fang's podcast on all
- 1:36:57Kayt: of the socials and or tender subject
- 1:37:00Kayt: on all the socials and then i'm an
- 1:37:03Kayt: artist um i make
- 1:37:06Kayt: a lot of collages and i do a collage for every episode
- 1:37:09Kayt: of tender subject i'm super
- 1:37:13Kayt: behind because i got an actual paying art
- 1:37:17Kayt: job for a little while um so
- 1:37:19Kayt: i have to work on that but so I'm always really excited and actually I one more
- 1:37:25Kayt: like little thing that's exciting I'm gonna be I did a collage for Texas Chainsaw
- 1:37:30Kayt: Massacre and someone spotted it and they're putting it in a collection of essays,
- 1:37:38Kayt: about Texas Chainsaw Massacre that's gonna come out in October so yeah that's really cool yeah I.
- 1:37:46Evan: Like to read that book too and also see the yeah that was my episode this week oh.
- 1:37:53Kayt: Yeah that's right.
- 1:37:54Evan: Well although if you're listening right now that was an episode several months
- 1:37:59Evan: ago but listening in real time it was this week and it was on purpose because
- 1:38:04Evan: the movie takes place on august 18th so i almost released it on august 18th
- 1:38:09Evan: anyway and it's their big anniversary thanks you uh both oh it's.
- 1:38:13Kayt: Like their big anniversary 50 is that right.
- 1:38:17Evan: Oh 50 years yeah 1974 yeah anyone who hasn't seen the Texas Massacre you should
- 1:38:23Evan: also go watch that movie yeah but yeah and you can follow this podcast on all
- 1:38:27Evan: the podcast places the same,
- 1:38:30Evan: left of the projector pod and we will catch you next time.
