Latest / The Living Waters Podcast / Ep. 197 - Exploring the Most Comforting Psalms
Transcript
- 1:05Emeal Zwayne: You think of Psalm 51, which I know, ray, is one of your absolute favorites?
- 1:09Emeal Zwayne: I mean that is birthed out of something real that happened with David.
- 1:13Ray Comfort: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:14Ray Comfort: David had committed adultery, committed murder, and Nathan called him out on it and said you're the man.
- 1:19Ray Comfort: And that's when he realized he had sinned against God.
- 1:22Ray Comfort: It just shows the deceitfulness of sin, how that David could do something like he did with Goliath deliver Israel, be a lover of God and then get into sexual sin and create an idol in his mind, as if God is happy with what happened and swept everything under the carpet.
- 1:41Ray Comfort: In came Nathan, pulled back the carpet and exposed him, and thus we have Psalm 51, where we see David's heart left bare.
- 1:52Oscar Navarro: Welcome to the Living Waters Podcast.
- 1:54Oscar Navarro: My name is EZV, the only host that matters.
- 1:57Oscar Navarro: If you haven't already, leave a comment, comment, comment, comment.
- 2:00Oscar Navarro: If you haven't already leave a comment, leave a comment about me.
- 2:03Oscar Navarro: We're reading a comment today from EZ316.
- 2:06Oscar Navarro: Ez is the greatest host ever.
- 2:09Oscar Navarro: Oh, what a sweet guy, wow.
- 2:12Emeal Zwayne: That is so good.
- 2:14Oscar Navarro: That is the best open of all time.
- 2:16Emeal Zwayne: It really makes me value myself as an anchor here, Thank you.
- 2:19Mark Spence: Oscar.
- 2:20Emeal Zwayne: Merci beaucoup, Oscar.
- 2:22Mark Spence: I think that was spot on.
- 2:23Mark Spence: I think that if I've ever heard an impression that was so perfect.
- 2:27Emeal Zwayne: There'd be a little more me in there, though, I would think.
- 2:30Ray Comfort: You're hard to do, ben Price has difficulty with you.
- 2:33Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, ben is phenomenal, but you and me, he's got to work on this.
- 2:36Emeal Zwayne: Sorry, ben, you've got to be honest.
- 2:38Emeal Zwayne: So I'm in Miguel's Junior ordering food a few days ago, is that?
- 2:43Emeal Zwayne: I don't know what that is?
- 2:45Mark Spence: Miguel's Junior, that's a great little mix.
- 2:47Mark Spence: It is good.
- 2:48Emeal Zwayne: Mark, because it's fast food, but it's good, it's chain, good fast food.
- 2:55Mark Spence: It's a mom and pop shop.
- 2:57Emeal Zwayne: So anyway, I'm in Miguel Junior's ordering some food.
- 3:00Emeal Zwayne: I was going to go see my sister and my dad and I ordered the food.
- 3:05Emeal Zwayne: I get the drinks.
- 3:08Emeal Zwayne: You know the cups to go put drinks.
- 3:09Emeal Zwayne: I turn around to fill the drinks.
- 3:11Emeal Zwayne: It's going to go for very long, very long.
- 3:12Oscar Navarro: It was very long.
- 3:14Emeal Zwayne: And I'm in the midst of reviewing scripture that I'd memorized in my mind and I turn around to get the drinks and like five seconds later I realize I had been standing there staring at the fountain machine, totally frozen like this.
- 3:32Emeal Zwayne: And then, like seriously, you guys know the story, People are walking by, like.
- 3:38Emeal Zwayne: Well, you guys know the story of me brushing the tassels, you know, in my office when I was counseling a couple and I came to have you said that on the podcast.
- 3:45Ray Comfort: I think I remember that.
- 3:47Emeal Zwayne: I think I might have, but anyhow, I came to like as, and I'm like, I've been standing here for like, just like this, nobody ever had a shoe and I look over.
- 3:56Emeal Zwayne: Well, I look over and I see these guys sitting there and they're like look at me.
- 4:00Emeal Zwayne: And then when they walk out, they did this like smirk and looked over at me.
- 4:04Emeal Zwayne: Oh man, what is it with the brain?
- 4:06Emeal Zwayne: They were probably on something.
- 4:08Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, the last time that happened to me was on the 91 freeway.
- 4:12Emeal Zwayne: I was coming to the office, I was reciting and going through scripture and I veered into the three plus lane on the fast track, because we always take the three plus lane One with our family, yeah.
- 4:22Emeal Zwayne: And so I just get lit up and I'm trying to convince the officer I had the folder next to me.
- 4:28Emeal Zwayne: You know my scripture memory.
- 4:28Emeal Zwayne: I'm like officer, I'm working on scripture.
- 4:31Ray Comfort: I was on my way to church.
- 4:31Ray Comfort: I'm just a little money and he was the nicest officer in the world.
- 4:36Emeal Zwayne: He's like no problem, I'll be right back and I was like sorry, you got to give me a ticket.
- 4:39Emeal Zwayne: It was like 500 bucks.
- 4:41Ray Comfort: Whoa.
- 4:42Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, that was a big mistake it was like 500 bucks.
- 4:45Emeal Zwayne: It like Like totally.
- 4:47Oscar Navarro: It's funny you talk about like zoning out, because the other day I was getting all these groceries and I had like a bag of fruit and I'm paying for my groceries and I'm sitting there and I kind of zone out for a second and some dude steals my bag of fruit.
- 5:01Oscar Navarro: Seriously, I was speechless.
- 5:04Oscar Navarro: Are you saved?
- 5:05Oscar Navarro: That was good.
- 5:06Ray Comfort: We got one.
- 5:11Emeal Zwayne: No, but listen, this was all redeemed, so.
- 5:13Emeal Zwayne: So then, that's all done.
- 5:15Emeal Zwayne: I'm standing there feeling like an idiot.
- 5:16Emeal Zwayne: Others more, oh more.
- 5:18Ray Comfort: That letter I gave you, which we decided not to read, has got some dad jokes right at the end of the PS.
- 5:24Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, I'll have to peer into that.
- 5:25Emeal Zwayne: So, anyway, I'm standing there feeling like an idiot which is nothing new and these two teenagers come in and they're standing there, they order their, their food, they get their water cups right, and then they go over to the machine and in my mind I had like this premonition, because I this just typically happens with teenagers.
- 5:42Emeal Zwayne: So they're getting water right, and then one of them looks around, pours out his water, puts in some spray do you normally say something when somebody fills up their water cup with spray?
- 5:51Emeal Zwayne: I hardly see it but uh, what I did was so.
- 5:55Mark Spence: I'm trying to figure how do I approach Oscar.
- 5:57Emeal Zwayne: I had, every time we go to lunch, much stealing, so that's illegal yeah, well, yeah you're you're stealing soda for the record I don't even drink soda.
- 6:07Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, you know Oscar's Mr health freak, but seriously, the solution of that is to have a dispenser separate from where the fountain drink is.
- 6:16Emeal Zwayne: You know for that anyway.
- 6:17Emeal Zwayne: So so he gets sprite, you know.
- 6:19Emeal Zwayne: So all these scenarios were going through my mind, because that stuff riles me up and and I can sometimes, like you know, be tempted to get in the flesh.
- 6:27Emeal Zwayne: But no, I thought through it.
- 6:28Emeal Zwayne: So then I go up, I go, hey guys, I go check this out.
- 6:30Emeal Zwayne: And I did the the printer app thing for him, which was a movie card love it
- 6:35Emeal Zwayne: they go oh, that's so cool, you know, listen that I go.
- 6:37Emeal Zwayne: Hey guys, let me just give you a little tip.
- 6:39Emeal Zwayne: I said, man, as you guys get older, you become men.
- 6:43Emeal Zwayne: You don't want to compromise your character thing for a little drop of sprite.
- 6:47Emeal Zwayne: And like what when I'm goes?
- 6:49Emeal Zwayne: No, I got water, I go.
- 6:50Emeal Zwayne: I saw him do sprite.
- 6:52Emeal Zwayne: So one of them didn't do it the other day.
- 6:53Emeal Zwayne: He's like, and the kid just drops his head and he's like oh man, you know.
- 6:57Emeal Zwayne: So I just went on, you know, talk to him about the Lord, and then gave for you gave him a game attract and I ended up being Arab kids.
- 7:04Emeal Zwayne: Their, their mom's, their dad's an Arab.
- 7:06Emeal Zwayne: You could tell by what they were wearing yeah, they were on camels.
- 7:10Ray Comfort: They were on camels, that's how I knew.
- 7:11Ray Comfort: Oh easy, I know you got that spirit to the sin and that's very admirable but it was.
- 7:19Emeal Zwayne: It was really.
- 7:20Emeal Zwayne: You know, it was a cool moment because they were taking long to do my food.
- 7:22Emeal Zwayne: I should have left, probably before those boys came in, but the Lord, just you know, orchestrated.
- 7:26Emeal Zwayne: I thought.
- 7:26Emeal Zwayne: You know this is one of those things where they will never forget this.
- 7:29Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, you know, I mean when they're later, you know, grow up thinking about character and they go to a kid oh, we go to a Christian school, you know, is it?
- 7:35Emeal Zwayne: The other kid goes.
- 7:36Emeal Zwayne: I got baptized in the Jordan River.
- 7:37Emeal Zwayne: You know so well.
- 7:39Mark Spence: But you know obviously, we were at the orange block sharing the gospel I think you were there easy at that time and there were some guys waiting right outside the exit of the movie theater and they're waiting for one friend right.
- 7:49Mark Spence: They all pitched together, their money goes inside the movie theater, goes into the back door, the exit opens up the exit door and everybody goes on inside and then they watch whatever movie they're gonna watch.
- 7:58Mark Spence: But I had a chance to share the gospel and that little interim before that door was opened and they made their entrance and there was one kid that was really struck by and I told him.
- 8:08Mark Spence: I said listen, while you're in there watching the movie, I want you to realize that Christ is watching you.
- 8:14Mark Spence: He's watching you every step you take into that theater.
- 8:17Emeal Zwayne: This is before they went in before they went in, but you saw them standing by the door yeah, I knew what they were waiting to do.
- 8:22Mark Spence: Yeah, yeah and wait.
- 8:23Mark Spence: It was a really great encounter.
- 8:25Mark Spence: And as he went in and his friends turned his back on him, he was left there with the door closing behind him, looking at me as I said enjoy your stolen movie.
- 8:34Mark Spence: Oh, give an account.
- 8:35Ray Comfort: Wow well, that's amazing.
- 8:37Ray Comfort: I was watching two guys rob a bang oh wait, were they related to you?
- 8:42Emeal Zwayne: yeah, wasn't your aunt, was it your aunt's?
- 8:44Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, oh man, yeah, you know those, those moments in life.
- 8:49Emeal Zwayne: It's like the kids at one day, ding dong ditched our house years ago and uh, and I opened the door real quick and they took off running, but a bike was on the ground and the and the tire was still spinning.
- 8:58Emeal Zwayne: Oh no, so I went grab the bike, I go, I got it.
- 9:02Emeal Zwayne: If you want to come get it, come knock on the door.
- 9:04Emeal Zwayne: You took you stole his bike.
- 9:05Emeal Zwayne: Yes, I took it inside and it's so funny because I'm looking out the window and you could see the kids hiding in the bushes.
- 9:12Emeal Zwayne: And they kept looking and I knew eventually they were gonna come.
- 9:14Emeal Zwayne: So finally they came to the door.
- 9:15Emeal Zwayne: They knocked.
- 9:16Emeal Zwayne: They said hey, yeah, it was us elementary high school?
- 9:19Emeal Zwayne: What age?
- 9:19Emeal Zwayne: Uh, elementary, maybe nine, ten, eleven.
- 9:22Emeal Zwayne: I was able to give them tracks, I gave them drinks, I just loved on them.
- 9:26Emeal Zwayne: But I said, hey guys, you know, and I just shared the glass to the bike back.
- 9:30Emeal Zwayne: Uh, no, I kept the bike, I gave water.
- 9:32Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, that was the boys bike used to ride right.
- 9:35Emeal Zwayne: Stop it, all right, friends.
- 9:39Emeal Zwayne: Here's a comment.
- 9:40Emeal Zwayne: I can't remember if I've heard this before, uh, but um no, that's a note for me from Rachel.
- 9:51Mark Spence: For myself, I've never, told you, but I love you what I meant says.
- 9:54Emeal Zwayne: I can't remember if I've read this before on the podcast or not, but it's worth reading anyway.
- 9:57Emeal Zwayne: All right, I can't begin to thank you enough for being a faithful servant of Jesus Christ.
- 10:02Emeal Zwayne: I grew up in church believing in God and believing in Jesus, made a few public professions of faith and was even baptized several times, thinking this time is really it, for real.
- 10:12Emeal Zwayne: This time I did a great job of keeping good attendance in church, got active in a ministry and even started a few Bible study groups and read my Bible every day without fail.
- 10:20Emeal Zwayne: But something was still missing.
- 10:22Emeal Zwayne: I secretly felt this way and never told anyone.
- 10:25Emeal Zwayne: Well, about a year ago, my daughter asked me if the evidence Bible was a good Bible, basically wanting to know if it was sound information.
- 10:31Emeal Zwayne: I honestly had no idea, so I ordered one for myself and eventually found your videos on YouTube.
- 10:37Emeal Zwayne: At that time, I was feeling guilty about having never shared the gospel with anyone, so I started forcing myself to do so, and it was like white noise departing my lips just noise.
- 10:45Emeal Zwayne: I couldn't put my finger on why this was.
- 10:47Emeal Zwayne: As I started watching your videos at first, I was deeply offended by your approach to sharing the true gospel.
- 10:52Emeal Zwayne: In reality, I was being convicted because I knew that there were certain secret sins in my life that, no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get rid of.
- 11:00Emeal Zwayne: Well, about a month ago, after reading through your evidence Bible, constantly bringing your videos and constantly studying this topic of the gospel, it finally dawned on me that I had been a false convert for so many daunting years, having Christ plus works legalistic faith, if you can even call it that more like religion.
- 11:18Emeal Zwayne: So I fell on my face, crying, with tears pouring down, soaking the floor with a broken heart and contract spirit before God.
- 11:25Emeal Zwayne: But on that day it finally made sense to me.
- 11:28Emeal Zwayne: I just saw how rotten I was, despite my many so-called good works, and I finally trusted the finished work of Jesus that Jesus did for me on the cross.
- 11:37Emeal Zwayne: I just wanted to personally thank you and your awesome team for everything that you do for our Lord and King, jesus Christ.
- 11:43Emeal Zwayne: Most sincerely.
- 11:44Emeal Zwayne: Mark Harris.
- 11:45Emeal Zwayne: Wow, wow, that's beautiful software sign, it said Mike Harris.
- 11:49Ray Comfort: Yeah that's on carer G, and that is not just amazing.
- 11:55Emeal Zwayne: I do have an awesome team yeah, well, god is kind, thank you.
- 11:59Emeal Zwayne: And yeah, mark, thank you so much, brother, for that can't tell you Lord how much that means and and and really how much wind it puts in our sales.
- 12:08Emeal Zwayne: That's why we do what we do.
- 12:09Emeal Zwayne: All right, friends, this podcast is brought to you by how to be free from the fear of death book with a fancy velvet cover ray.
- 12:18Ray Comfort: I don't know, this might be velvet, I don't know but it's very fancy yeah same publishers that are publishing your book that's right, rodstree and friends.
- 12:27Ray Comfort: I signed my contract and what's the title of the book?
- 12:31Emeal Zwayne: uh, fight like a man.
- 12:32Emeal Zwayne: A bold, biblical battle plan for personal purity.
- 12:35Emeal Zwayne: Signed the contract all done.
- 12:37Emeal Zwayne: In fact, I've been sending it out to people for reviews.
- 12:39Emeal Zwayne: I'm excited I'm on page 17.
- 12:41Mark Spence: Have you started mark yep, page 17, excited for what I've read so far, like the story, uh, in the beginning there, yeah, so uh.
- 12:48Mark Spence: I'll give you an honest opinion, and this is what I love about cheesy, right?
- 12:51Mark Spence: I mean, all you guys are like this.
- 12:53Mark Spence: It's like give me that honest critique.
- 12:56Mark Spence: Yeah, so I am.
- 12:57Mark Spence: I don't have anything negative to say yet, but I have.
- 13:00Mark Spence: I'm hopeful that I will find something very negative to say.
- 13:03Emeal Zwayne: I'm sure, I'm sure you will bring it on, brother.
- 13:07Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, uh, yeah, friends, how to be free from the fear of death book and the living waters mug, get over to get that and study bible.
- 13:12Emeal Zwayne: That, as you saw, god used in a way to open someone's eyes who forwarded?
- 13:16Ray Comfort: that gospel what who forwarded that book?
- 13:19Ray Comfort: Which book?
- 13:19Oscar Navarro: the book you just mentioned fear of death yeah, john mccath, was that one of the car?
- 13:24Oscar Navarro: I know there was one of them, that's right, yeah, yeah he did do the forward to that.
- 13:27Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, I was honored to actually deliver the book to him in person and, uh, he was blessed to receive it.
- 13:32Emeal Zwayne: Uh, all right, friends, there you have it.
- 13:35Emeal Zwayne: Make sure to check all that out at living waters dot com.
- 13:38Emeal Zwayne: Wow, good job, oscar.
- 13:40Emeal Zwayne: All right friends, today we are jumping into something I'm excited about very much, so we're jumping into a swimming.
- 13:48Emeal Zwayne: The most comforting and powerful Psalms I read the book of palms and then levitticus and then the book at job.
- 13:56Emeal Zwayne: Is that an actual instance?
- 13:59Ray Comfort: Yeah, it was a guy that I Think I mentioned it before.
- 14:02Ray Comfort: I was in a store and I heard some guy blaspheming, continuing to blaspheme and so many times I leaned in and said is this a religious meeting?
- 14:10Ray Comfort: And I got to Witness and send him books and he got Sally say oh, that's the one with yeah, it's on hell's best kept secret.
- 14:16Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, yeah, yeah, oh, and France.
- 14:19Emeal Zwayne: One more thing before we jump into the content the ten commandments Coin golden.
- 14:25Ray Comfort: It's golden.
- 14:25Ray Comfort: It's not solid gold, but it's really has incredible perceived value and it's a wonderful gift to give to anyone.
- 14:32Ray Comfort: No one is gonna toss that.
- 14:34Mark Spence: Yeah, anytime I've ever handed that coin out to someone, their jaws have dropped right, super nice the perceived value attached to that, but it also put in this.
- 14:45Emeal Zwayne: Yeah well, it's in this really cool plastic case too.
- 14:47Emeal Zwayne: And yeah, perceived value huh right.
- 14:50Ray Comfort: And it's got the gospel on one side of the tank and mom has a good way to it.
- 14:54Emeal Zwayne: It really is and this is really the, it really is the granddaddy of the silver, the yes, aluminum lighter coins would you get an?
- 15:01Emeal Zwayne: Abundance.
- 15:02Emeal Zwayne: But this is like a special gift coin.
- 15:03Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, so sure to get it living waters.
- 15:06Emeal Zwayne: Outcome Okay, friends, uh, proverbs guys.
- 15:08Emeal Zwayne: So I'll wait.
- 15:10Emeal Zwayne: I say problem.
- 15:16Mark Spence: Solves, why don't we start off by reading some 119?
- 15:19Emeal Zwayne: Backwards you know, let me just say I'm excited Until to do this, very, very excited.
- 15:26Emeal Zwayne: And let me just say just, I've said this before, but I read the Psalms and Proverbs through every month.
- 15:33Emeal Zwayne: I do five Psalms a day and a proverb a day and I guess me through once a month and I want to be honest that I Hesitate to share stuff like that and the reason why I hesitate is because I don't want it to come across like I'm bragging or boasting.
- 15:45Emeal Zwayne: It did, yeah, I figured, but, but I don't want it to Because that's, that's not not that I'm beyond pride and boasting you don't need to say there's just do it you see, let me ask you a couple questions here before you go any further.
- 15:59Mark Spence: Same on right Do you play games on your phone?
- 16:03Emeal Zwayne: You know how much I hate games mark, so In general just games in general.
- 16:08Mark Spence: Would you say this is what sets apart your study habits from other people, that you are kind of redeeming the time.
- 16:17Mark Spence: You're very purposeful, right?
- 16:19Mark Spence: I mean?
- 16:19Mark Spence: You've memorized the entire book of Galatians and Ephesians and Philippians and Colossians, right?
- 16:28Mark Spence: I mean?
- 16:28Mark Spence: I don't know many people that have memorized more than three or four verses in each one of those books and you have other books that you've memorized.
- 16:35Mark Spence: Is it a matter of prioritizing your time and saying listen, while you play Toon Blast or solitary or whatever, maybe, and you can do that, I'm sorry, what game was that sounds like.
- 16:48Mark Spence: I was looking at Ray's phone and I go what is Ray play?
- 16:50Mark Spence: So is that what it is?
- 16:52Mark Spence: I mean you're just prioritizing your time saying while you play the game, I'm just gonna be kind of you know, I think the key is priority, because it's not about not having leisure.
- 17:00Emeal Zwayne: I think that it's good and healthy.
- 17:01Emeal Zwayne: Everyone has their own bent on what things they do.
- 17:04Emeal Zwayne: That helps them, you know, relax, but it's priority.
- 17:06Emeal Zwayne: So to me it's like if I'm gonna do something relaxing, which which I do and and I enjoy I want to make sure I've prioritized what's most important, you know, and and then enjoy those sorts of, so you have 10 minutes to kill.
- 17:19Mark Spence: What do you do with your 10 minutes?
- 17:21Emeal Zwayne: I usually like to.
- 17:22Emeal Zwayne: I mean, again, it depends on where I'm at my day.
- 17:25Emeal Zwayne: Have I, have I fulfilled my priorities?
- 17:27Emeal Zwayne: Have I memorized?
- 17:28Emeal Zwayne: Have I been reviewing my scriptures?
- 17:29Emeal Zwayne: Have I been working on my reading and my?
- 17:31Emeal Zwayne: Have I spent time with Lord in prayer?
- 17:32Emeal Zwayne: If I've done that, maybe I'll watch a funny video or something or you know whatever.
- 17:37Emeal Zwayne: But typically if I'm standing in the line, a lot of times I'll be reciting.
- 17:40Emeal Zwayne: Like I said, what happened the other day in the in the store, I'll recite scripture or, you know, review scripture, or do my reading or Text someone and encourage them.
- 17:50Mark Spence: So have you always been like this?
- 17:51Mark Spence: I mean, what I'm trying to get is what has pushed you over the edge right, what separates easy from other people who are just not doing this but they say you know, I want to do that, I want to memorize scripture.
- 17:59Mark Spence: What is that first step?
- 18:01Oscar Navarro: I think I have an answer observing your life, because you said priority, think both of you said priority.
- 18:06Oscar Navarro: I would characterize easy, different than just priority, because priority people can have priority for God's word for a month and then it falls away.
- 18:13Oscar Navarro: I think the thing that I've witnessed in EZ's life is consistency.
- 18:16Oscar Navarro: Like we went on a five and a half hour road trip up to Northern California and he didn't use that as an excuse to not do his daily disciplines of reading and prayer and writing.
- 18:27Oscar Navarro: At that time he was in the car doing those things and I think consistency is-.
- 18:33Oscar Navarro: Was he draw having?
- 18:33Oscar Navarro: Yeah, he was with his feet.
- 18:35Emeal Zwayne: That's a win by feet.
- 18:37Oscar Navarro: I think consistency is powerful and it's often overlooked.
- 18:41Oscar Navarro: I've quoted before that the idea of a long obedience in the same direction, day in and day out.
- 18:46Oscar Navarro: You know, I compare it to like working out.
- 18:48Oscar Navarro: If somebody shows up and works out on a Monday and then they wake up the next day and they look in the mirror and they're like man, I didn't see a difference, I'm going to quit.
- 18:54Oscar Navarro: They're never going to go anywhere.
- 18:57Oscar Navarro: If they worked out three days in a row and then they looked in the mirror and like I don't see anything, I'm going to quit.
- 19:01Oscar Navarro: I don't know when the time is, but at some point, when you consistently start working out, you start to notice a difference.
- 19:07Oscar Navarro: I don't know when that day is.
- 19:08Oscar Navarro: It's you know a month, two months, three months, I don't know.
- 19:10Oscar Navarro: The point is, you start recognizing the difference.
- 19:12Oscar Navarro: I think in EZ's life, what I witnessed since knowing you is a consistency, is a long obedience in the same direction through your daily disciplines, which comes to memorizing scriptures and meditating on God's word.
- 19:27Emeal Zwayne: Wow.
- 19:27Emeal Zwayne: Well, that's encouraging guys.
- 19:29Emeal Zwayne: You know, I know all my shortcomings and they're huge and they're massive, but Ray has Amen, amen.
- 19:35Emeal Zwayne: But Ray has actually been a massive encouragement and example to me.
- 19:40Emeal Zwayne: Inconsistency Ray's the most consistent man I know.
- 19:42Emeal Zwayne: He starts something he doesn't stop at.
- 19:44Emeal Zwayne: I mean 12 years every day in New Zealand, open air preaching, you know, going to Huntington Beach, how many years going to Cerritos every day, a couple times a day.
- 19:51Emeal Zwayne: Like you said, it's doing something, even if it's small, every day and being consistent with it, man, you'll be miles ahead.
- 20:00Emeal Zwayne: You know, there's a day when I started the first verse of the first book that I memorized and I just kept going and it built, you know.
- 20:07Emeal Zwayne: But you have a phenomenal memory.
- 20:09Emeal Zwayne: God's been kind in that regard.
- 20:11Emeal Zwayne: I mean, I feel like I have a knack for memorization.
- 20:15Ray Comfort: So what I'm trying to say is that when you're young and your memory is very good, use it.
- 20:19Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, absolutely.
- 20:21Ray Comfort: Because as you get older, you just don't retain it Absolutely.
- 20:24Emeal Zwayne: I'm always encouraging people to memorize scripture get God's word in your heart.
- 20:28Oscar Navarro: I just want to take a step back and not overlook the reality that you said.
- 20:31Oscar Navarro: Ray is a massive influence, which has got to be the first time Ray and Massive was ever used in a sense.
- 20:40Emeal Zwayne: Massive Ray, that's true.
- 20:41Emeal Zwayne: But anyway, what I was starting to say was the reason why you know I share that and other things like that is to encourage people.
- 20:48Emeal Zwayne: And I have a point to make in that, mark, when you guys were having lunch with some friends and I walked in I had been speaking somewhere.
- 20:54Emeal Zwayne: I walked into the same restaurant, texted you guys what's hiding and all that silly stuff.
- 20:57Emeal Zwayne: Anyway, our good friend, jerry Blodgett, after I was leaving the restaurant, followed me out.
- 21:02Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, he's a listener.
- 21:03Mark Spence: No, he didn't follow.
- 21:04Mark Spence: He ran from our table.
- 21:06Emeal Zwayne: Oh, he ran.
- 21:06Emeal Zwayne: Okay, I didn't see the running Like.
- 21:08Mark Spence: I thought there was an emergency.
- 21:10Emeal Zwayne: Yeah.
- 21:10Emeal Zwayne: So anyway, Jerry is a good friend, known him for ages goes to our church.
- 21:15Emeal Zwayne: You guys were all having lunch together and shout out to you Jerry, Jerry listens to the podcast faithfully, so anyway, he follows me out and he goes.
- 21:21Emeal Zwayne: Man, I just want to thank you so much for mentioning because I've mentioned it before in the podcast that you listen to the.
- 21:26Emeal Zwayne: You read the Psalms and Proverbs through every month.
- 21:29Emeal Zwayne: He's like man, I started doing that and he said, like, basically, he's addicted.
- 21:33Emeal Zwayne: He's like, if I go, you know a few days and I haven't done, he's like I start feeding for it.
- 21:37Emeal Zwayne: And that just stirred my soul.
- 21:39Emeal Zwayne: I thought, man, you know, that's why we share examples from our lives.
- 21:43Emeal Zwayne: It's to stir each other up.
- 21:44Emeal Zwayne: I mean, what do we have to boast in?
- 21:46Emeal Zwayne: What do we have that we didn't receive, as Scripture says?
- 21:48Emeal Zwayne: And if we received it, why do we boast?
- 21:49Emeal Zwayne: As if, though, we didn't, Like it came from ourselves?
- 21:51Emeal Zwayne: Why would I be something special for eating food?
- 21:56Emeal Zwayne: Oh yeah, Look at the way I eat, brother.
- 21:58Emeal Zwayne: Like, what are you talking about?
- 22:00Emeal Zwayne: I eat a lot.
- 22:00Emeal Zwayne: Of course, food is good and you need it, and it's healthy.
- 22:04Emeal Zwayne: So anyway, Jerry, thank you, you blessed me that day, and that stirred me to mention that again today.
- 22:08Mark Spence: And yeah, so it's contagious?
- 22:10Mark Spence: Yeah, and the same way, when a senior pastor is sharing his evangelistic endeavors that week, from the pulpit it lights a fire underneath the people in the pews.
- 22:19Ray Comfort: Yeah, so if you want, Sorry, mark, go ahead no, finish it, no, no, your zeal is to provoke many Scripture says and it does.
- 22:26Ray Comfort: Yeah, so does yawning, don't do it.
- 22:30Oscar Navarro: Don't do it.
- 22:32Ray Comfort: Okay, I just.
- 22:32Ray Comfort: And so apathy is contagious, and so is zeal and even laughter.
- 22:39Mark Spence: It's a small world, so is the flu.
- 22:41Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, it's a small world?
- 22:42Mark Spence: No, it's not.
- 22:44Emeal Zwayne: So, guys, Psalms we're going to jump into Psalms today.
- 22:47Emeal Zwayne: You know you say so, we haven't got time for stuff, We'll talk about that.
- 22:52Emeal Zwayne: You say Psalms and I think there's this sort of shared sense that people get from saying that because of what the Psalms contain and what they're all about.
- 23:02Emeal Zwayne: So I have so much to say and background and all that, but I'm going to let Oscar give us a flyover because he's really good at that kind of thing.
- 23:09Ray Comfort: Yeah, and you think we can handle Psalms in one program.
- 23:12Emeal Zwayne: Seriously Generally, not, but we'll give it a go.
- 23:15Emeal Zwayne: We can revisit it and do more of them, but I think I have a lot that I want to touch on in those.
- 23:20Oscar Navarro: Yeah, I too am excited about the Psalms.
- 23:22Oscar Navarro: You know, if you think about it, the Psalms 150 of them, their poems, their songs, their prayers, and this is sort of like Israel's playlist, right, like we all have Spotify, apple, apple Music, whatever.
- 23:35Oscar Navarro: We have endless songs.
- 23:36Oscar Navarro: This 150, this was their playlist.
- 23:39Oscar Navarro: This was the songs they lived by.
- 23:41Oscar Navarro: They date back as early as Moses, between the 15th and 13th century.
- 23:47Oscar Navarro: They move forward into David's reign, into the period of Babylonian exile and even after that, 73 of them are directly connected to David.
- 23:57Oscar Navarro: After that we've got authors like Solomon.
- 23:59Oscar Navarro: I've mentioned Moses.
- 24:00Oscar Navarro: We have 49 anonymous ones.
- 24:02Oscar Navarro: But here's what's important when I want to draw our attention to A lot of people don't realize.
- 24:06Oscar Navarro: They think that it's just a bunch of random Psalms.
- 24:08Oscar Navarro: They've actually.
- 24:09Oscar Navarro: Shortly after the Babylonian exile, they were rearranged into five general categories and some scholars and theologians have different perspectives on the topics, but we all agree that they've been organized into five categories.
- 24:24Oscar Navarro: Books, basically, 1 to 42.
- 24:26Oscar Navarro: You can categorize as God's covenant faithfulness.
- 24:30Oscar Navarro: Book two would be 42 to 72, which is hope for the Messianic kingdom.
- 24:35Oscar Navarro: This is while they are in, are going into exile.
- 24:39Oscar Navarro: Book three is chapter 73 to 89, which is hope in or hope after the exile, book fours versus chapters 90 to 106, which is God as king over all creation.
- 24:55Oscar Navarro: And then finally the songs of a sense or poems of praise, which is where it, where it all kind of comes to head.
- 25:02Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, I love the way you put that Oscar Israel's play list.
- 25:05Emeal Zwayne: You know just the fact that the Psalms are so connected to real life experiences in the midst of things that were happening.
- 25:15Emeal Zwayne: You think of Psalm 51, which I know, Ray, is one of your absolute favorites.
- 25:20Emeal Zwayne: I mean that is birthed out of something real that happened with David.
- 25:23Ray Comfort: Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:24Ray Comfort: David had committed adultery, committed murder, and Nathan called him out on it and said you're the man.
- 25:30Ray Comfort: And that's when he realized he had sinned against God.
- 25:33Ray Comfort: And it just shows that a seafolness of sin, how that David could do something like he did with Goliath deliver Israel, be a lover of God and then get into sexual sin and create an idol in his mind, as if God is happy with what happened and swept everything under the carpet.
- 25:52Ray Comfort: In came Nathan, pulled back the carpet and exposed him, and thus we have Psalm 51, where we see David's heart left bare.
- 26:01Emeal Zwayne: And you know just a note on how you validate scripture by the fact that its heroes are shown with all their warts.
- 26:11Emeal Zwayne: You know, in the sense that if you're going to compile something as a fictional sort of a work so that you can garner followers or whatever, you would never paint your heroes as flawed people.
- 26:22Mark Spence: Right, I remember teaching on Psalm 23.
- 26:26Mark Spence: And one of the books that I really enjoyed was A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23 by Philip Keller.
- 26:32Mark Spence: So Ray and I, we were at a CBA several years ago and Philip Keller was there signing books and I went up to him, waited in line, gave him a hell's biscuit secret and I said hey, I just want to thank you for your book A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23.
- 26:45Mark Spence: It was a real blessing.
- 26:46Mark Spence: I read it a couple times and I taught on different points.
- 26:50Mark Spence: When I had taught, he's looking at me with a little bit of bewilderment and I didn't understand that you know entirely.
- 26:56Mark Spence: And I walked away and I was just thinking well, I mean, I was just I'm glad that I was able to tell him that I look over and I and I see a little name placard and it said Philip Yancy, wrong, philip.
- 27:11Ray Comfort: Oh, like sheep have gone astray, Can you one of them?
- 27:14Emeal Zwayne: Oh, I did that once with that.
- 27:16Emeal Zwayne: I don't know if you guys remember that song.
- 27:18Emeal Zwayne: I've mentioned it on the podcast, I'm sure.
- 27:19Emeal Zwayne: The man of the Tombs, a guy named Roby Duke, and when I was pastoring, you know, someone said Roby Duke is here.
- 27:25Emeal Zwayne: You know I'm like what?
- 27:26Emeal Zwayne: So I got up to the guy and I'm Ray oh, you're so, he's like trying to enter around me by, like that's not me man.
- 27:31Emeal Zwayne: Oh it's crazy.
- 27:34Emeal Zwayne: It was funny, but I do that with people.
- 27:35Emeal Zwayne: I got called the wrong names and Rachel, just yeah, it gets really no way, I have no, seriously.
- 27:40Emeal Zwayne: I mean, you remember names more than anybody, I know, yeah, but that's my problem is, I think I, you know, I think, oh, I definitely know this name, but my brain does a switch, you know, and at least you got Rachel's name right.
- 27:50Ray Comfort: That was good.
- 27:50Ray Comfort: Who Rachel?
- 27:54Oscar Navarro: But it's not like you got someone's name wrong while officiating or wedding or anything.
- 27:59Mark Spence: Ray.
- 27:59Emeal Zwayne: Comfort.
- 28:00Emeal Zwayne: Here it is again, but let me just I mean, we talked about Psalm 51.
- 28:03Emeal Zwayne: Hang on.
- 28:04Ray Comfort: You feeling guilty.
- 28:08Emeal Zwayne: But let me just read a few verses from Psalm 51.
- 28:11Emeal Zwayne: I mean, we can't just pass it by.
- 28:12Emeal Zwayne: Have mercy upon me, oh God, according to your loving kindness, according to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin, for I acknowledge my transgressions and my sin is always before me, against you.
- 28:30Emeal Zwayne: You only have I sinned and done this evil in your sight.
- 28:34Emeal Zwayne: Oh, I mean, Mark, when you say this is like the epitome of repentance, like no excuses.
- 28:41Emeal Zwayne: It's against you, Lord.
- 28:43Mark Spence: This is like well, that's a great focal point and it's a great place to start and it's a great place to finish.
- 28:48Mark Spence: As much as we think that our sin may be horizontal, it will always be vertical.
- 28:52Mark Spence: Right Now I have a question right and maybe I'll address it towards Oscar.
- 28:56Mark Spence: It seems to be the scholar of the group right here, but you quoted Psalm 51.
- 29:00Mark Spence: We know that is David.
- 29:02Mark Spence: Yeah, right, we look at maybe Psalm 22, verse one, where it says my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 29:08Mark Spence: And as we look at a text like that, why is it just not David thinking to himself God, you have forsaken David?
- 29:15Mark Spence: We are quick to say that that is a scripture pointing to Jesus, when Jesus' name is not mentioned.
- 29:21Mark Spence: How do we deal with a text like that?
- 29:23Mark Spence: What?
- 29:24Oscar Navarro: do you think, oscar?
- 29:24Oscar Navarro: Yeah, well, one.
- 29:25Oscar Navarro: Jesus attributes that chapter right to himself on the cross when he says my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 29:31Oscar Navarro: And I think it's important to realize.
- 29:33Oscar Navarro: You know, you and I were talking earlier about the idea of Jesus fulfilling prophecy, and one of the things that we often do in our minds is we think that when we hear prophecy fulfillment, we think there's like this one to one as then, like as though there was like this list of like 50 or 100 things that Jesus needed to checkmark, do.
- 29:54Oscar Navarro: And what we need to realize is that often, when the Jewish people thought about prophecy for being fulfilled, it wasn't so much a checkmark, rather typological, or to use a different phrase, they saw Jesus in the stories that they grew up in and so, in other words, like God's people were always longing for a perfect King and they thought that David was going to be the perfect King.
- 30:21Oscar Navarro: But, as you alluded to Psalm 51, david sins, and so when Jesus steps into the marketplace, he calls himself the one true perfect King.
- 30:29Oscar Navarro: He is the perfect David, the perfect King that's going to lead people when David sinned and because of that, his son dies and the people suffer, the kingdom suffer.
- 30:40Oscar Navarro: Jesus steps in and he does not sin, and yet he is the son that dies for our sins so that God's kingdom would reign on earth as it is in heaven, and so it's important that we see how he fulfills prophecy by being a typological figure that the people were longing for all through the Old Testament.
- 31:01Oscar Navarro: That's great, yeah.
- 31:02Emeal Zwayne: Beautiful, yeah.
- 31:03Emeal Zwayne: And then you know I think this is extremely important to note, mark, because there are some who have become disillusioned by messianic prophecy, because they'll look at the context and they'll say wait a minute, this is talking about this.
- 31:19Emeal Zwayne: Is David talking about himself or what?
- 31:21Emeal Zwayne: Have you Remember what it says in Mark 12, 36, david himself said by the Spirit.
- 31:26Emeal Zwayne: We have to understand that the New Testament is unveiling for us the realities of what God, by the Spirit, had put in Scripture, even though these were Psalms that were being written by David or others, in reference to maybe even themselves.
- 31:44Emeal Zwayne: So the New Testament is unveiling for us what God intended in that.
- 31:48Emeal Zwayne: So that's why we know they're messianic.
- 31:50Emeal Zwayne: We can't just go and pick things out on ourselves, but we're talking about the prophetic guidance given by the authors of the New Testament to reveal that reality to us.
- 31:57Emeal Zwayne: Does that make?
- 31:58Ray Comfort: sense, yeah, yeah.
- 31:59Ray Comfort: Rho Tomeus, where Jesus said fools in slav hearten to believe all that the prophets have spoken and direct reference to himself in Scripture.
- 32:08Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, and then he began to open for them what it said about him and the law and the Psalms, and all through the Scriptures.
- 32:13Emeal Zwayne: So yeah, so, guys, any favorite Psalms?
- 32:17Emeal Zwayne: Yes, okay, right.
- 32:19Ray Comfort: Some one through to 150.
- 32:22Ray Comfort: I love, I love Psalm 23, the death Psalm as it's often used in Hollywood.
- 32:28Ray Comfort: You see these old cowboy movies where they're bearing some guy and a drunken preacher says the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want to make me land.
- 32:35Ray Comfort: And he says, though, I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.
- 32:39Ray Comfort: And most people say that Psalm is speaking about death, when it's speaking about the exact opposite.
- 32:43Ray Comfort: When you walk through the valley of the shadow of, you're not in the reality and just close proximity to it.
- 32:48Ray Comfort: If you're in the shadow of a wall, you're not in the wall, you're just very close to the wall.
- 32:53Ray Comfort: And this life is the shadow of death.
- 32:55Ray Comfort: And it says of Jesus to them that sat in the shadow of death a light has sprung up, and the light of Christ banishes the shadow of death.
- 33:04Ray Comfort: So it's great to point out to people that this life, not death itself, is that shadow of.
- 33:10Ray Comfort: The valley that we're talking of, we walk through.
- 33:12Ray Comfort: The shadow of death is hovering over every one of us.
- 33:14Ray Comfort: It can take us out in a split second.
- 33:18Mark Spence: You know, I picture King David right.
- 33:20Mark Spence: He walks up to the fence and he looks at these sheep on the other side of the fence and he's just saying where's your shepherd?
- 33:29Mark Spence: Right, the Lord is my shepherd.
- 33:32Mark Spence: You guys are so weak, you guys are in need, you guys are hungry.
- 33:37Mark Spence: Listen, I don't lack anything, you know, and I just see the contrast, back and forth, back and forth, with King David looking at the other sheep and just boasting and who his shepherd is.
- 33:48Mark Spence: And that's what we can do, and that's what Psalm points out to us.
- 33:51Mark Spence: I love that.
- 33:52Mark Spence: No, you love.
- 33:53Mark Spence: No, that's great Good to you.
- 33:55Ray Comfort: I'm originally from New Zealand and a lot of sheep in New Zealand.
- 33:57Ray Comfort: I won't make the sheep joke, but one thing I learned about sheep is they're really, really dumb.
- 34:02Ray Comfort: I mean seriously dumb.
- 34:03Ray Comfort: They just stand there looking dumb, growing wool and waiting to be eaten.
- 34:08Ray Comfort: I remember when we were surfing if a sheep got in front of our vehicle it would run in front of the vehicle for miles, not thinking I should go to the left to get out of the road as a vehicle, but it didn't think it was just run, run, run, run.
- 34:20Ray Comfort: One sheep jumps.
- 34:21Ray Comfort: The following sheep will jump also for no reason.
- 34:23Ray Comfort: It jumped, I jumped.
- 34:24Ray Comfort: And when you're giving out gospel tracks you can see the sheep mentality of people.
- 34:28Ray Comfort: If someone in a line takes a track, all have one, all have one.
- 34:31Ray Comfort: One person says no, you can guarantee the next three or say no because we certainly are like sheep.
- 34:37Ray Comfort: And I read something.
- 34:38Ray Comfort: I did a video on how to get to sleep, how to enjoy sleep, induce sleep, and I saw in the comments someone said if you can't sleep, don't count sheep.
- 34:47Ray Comfort: Talk to the shepherd and I said oh, that's really good.
- 34:52Ray Comfort: How many sheep are there?
- 34:52Ray Comfort: In New Zealand?
- 34:53Ray Comfort: There's something like 50 million, but not sure of the exact amount because the guy that counts and keeps falling to sleep Nice.
- 34:59Ray Comfort: You said you weren't going to say it.
- 35:00Ray Comfort: You made me.
- 35:01Oscar Navarro: You provoke me like I love Psalm 23.
- 35:04Oscar Navarro: It kind of flies in the face of, at least you know, here in the United States, like American machismo culture because we all liked it.
- 35:13Oscar Navarro: Like I had this friend shop one time at the gym with me and he was wearing a shirt and it said not a sheep.
- 35:17Oscar Navarro: And I kind of chuckled and like I'm like what's that supposed to mean?
- 35:20Oscar Navarro: And he told me and I didn't disagree with why he was wearing it, but I was like you know, the irony of that is that you are a sheep, you're just following a different shepherd, and that's the thing is that we're all sheep.
- 35:30Oscar Navarro: The question isn't whether or not you're a sheep, the question is who's your shepherd?
- 35:36Ray Comfort: And who's lost?
- 35:37Emeal Zwayne: and who's not.
- 35:37Emeal Zwayne: And you know, I think it's important for us to note that it's easy to take Psalms like Psalm 23, because it's so.
- 35:47Emeal Zwayne: I mean, it's just so familiar and it's true, the Psalm you'll hear unbelievers quote.
- 35:52Emeal Zwayne: It's just like.
- 35:53Emeal Zwayne: It's like what I've said before the John 3 16 syndrome.
- 35:55Emeal Zwayne: You know, we're so familiar that we almost write it off.
- 35:57Emeal Zwayne: Man, we need to pause and really explore the depths and the power of that.
- 36:02Emeal Zwayne: You know, the Lord is my shepherd.
- 36:05Emeal Zwayne: I mean, you think of Mark 6, which I've talked about before.
- 36:08Emeal Zwayne: I mean when Jesus looked out at the multitude and he saw them as weary and scattered and like sheep having no shepherd.
- 36:13Emeal Zwayne: That's actually Matthew 9 hones in on that, but it's a parallel passage.
- 36:17Emeal Zwayne: But sheep having no shepherd, that is the world.
- 36:21Emeal Zwayne: And what's a shepherd do for a sheep?
- 36:23Mark Spence: He guides, he provides, he protects, he breaks the legs of the little sheep that goes stray.
- 36:28Mark Spence: Is that true?
- 36:30Mark Spence: I've never heard that I read that inside the book right, like the shepherd that goes, the sheep that goes stray.
- 36:36Mark Spence: He breaks the legs, puts it around and he tends to it and then, when the sheep is all better, the sheep knows not to stray from the shepherd.
- 36:42Ray Comfort: Well, he's just breaking his legs, so it doesn't do it anymore.
- 36:46Mark Spence: Listen Psalm 19 1,.
- 36:47Mark Spence: The heavens declare the glory of God and the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
- 36:50Mark Spence: I'll tell you what anytime there's a beautiful sunset inside my house, somebody will come inside the house and they'll say you need to go outside right now, right?
- 36:57Mark Spence: And we all go outside and we just stand in amazement at the sunset.
- 37:01Mark Spence: I think I watch every sunrise and every sunset.
- 37:03Mark Spence: When it comes time for the sunset, I'm on a walk and I'm enjoying it and taking pictures and just absolutely bling away.
- 37:11Mark Spence: And I saw the most beautiful sunset the other day when we were coming back from the river there in Blythe with the Sorensons.
- 37:17Mark Spence: Take a picture.
- 37:18Mark Spence: I did take a picture.
- 37:19Mark Spence: I'll show it to you and it was a picture.
- 37:21Mark Spence: We stopped it in and out and the sun sets in the back and I got two of my favorite things in the same picture.
- 37:26Mark Spence: I was in and out in the sunset I'll show you.
- 37:31Oscar Navarro: You know I love that we're talking about Psalm 23 and these other Psalms of praise, but one aspect that I think is really important for us to remember, too, is the Psalms of Lament, and I think Lament is a lost art.
- 37:41Oscar Navarro: I think we've talked about this before in the podcast.
- 37:43Oscar Navarro: I think Lament is a lost art.
- 37:45Oscar Navarro: Could you define it, especially in the Christian church Lament, because it's an old book.
- 37:49Oscar Navarro: Yeah, yeah, I think it's a lost art, especially in the modern day.
- 37:52Oscar Navarro: Church Lament is a longing awaiting, a crying out, and I think often we want to run quickly to like moments of praise.
- 38:02Oscar Navarro: That is a great picture.
- 38:03Mark Spence: The only thing that's missing is in the foreground.
- 38:05Oscar Navarro: There needs to be a double double For those of you who are listening, which is most of you sparks passing around picture.
- 38:11Ray Comfort: Just tell them trying to imagine the sunset.
- 38:14Oscar Navarro: Psalms of Lament.
- 38:15Oscar Navarro: They're needed for us.
- 38:16Oscar Navarro: Psalms of Lament, often in unanswered prayers.
- 38:19Oscar Navarro: I'm thinking about Psalm 88.
- 38:20Oscar Navarro: I cry out day and night and you might think like, oh man, he's crying out.
- 38:25Oscar Navarro: There's so many unanswered prayers the Psalmist has in Psalm 88.
- 38:29Oscar Navarro: And you would think that the Psalm would end with a pretty bow.
- 38:33Oscar Navarro: I will trust you, you are my faithful God, but it ends like this you have my companion have become darkness.
- 38:43Oscar Navarro: It's like he does not have answers to his questions.
- 38:48Oscar Navarro: So it's real life.
- 38:49Oscar Navarro: That's real life.
- 38:50Oscar Navarro: That's exactly right.
- 38:50Mark Spence: We can relate to the Psalmist when we read Psalms like this, because we begin to think that we are a boat to ourselves, an island on to ourselves.
- 38:57Mark Spence: A boat to ourselves.
- 38:57Mark Spence: A new phrase A Titanic to ourselves that we're going down and nobody understands what we are going through.
- 39:06Mark Spence: And then we read what the Psalmist says and we go boy.
- 39:10Mark Spence: Now I'm still depressed.
- 39:11Mark Spence: Now I'm just depressed with somebody else.
- 39:12Ray Comfort: Yeah, unlike an island going down, I'm like an island on a ship.
- 39:16Oscar Navarro: And there are promises for those moments of lament.
- 39:19Oscar Navarro: Lamentations 325, the Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks, and then Isaiah 49, those who wait for me shall not be put to shame.
- 39:30Oscar Navarro: And so the Psalms of lament are a reminder that, even in those long seasons of uncertainty, of pain, of suffering, of longing for the Lord, he is faithful.
- 39:43Mark Spence: What's that?
- 39:43Mark Spence: Is it a Psalm Weeping may?
- 39:47Ray Comfort: last for a night.
- 39:48Mark Spence: No, it's a shout but, a joy.
- 39:49Emeal Zwayne: Is it a Pleasey Asties, or?
- 39:51Ray Comfort: it might be, I think so it's in the Bible.
- 39:53Emeal Zwayne: Yeah.
- 39:55Emeal Zwayne: Psalm 18, 1 to 6,.
- 39:56Emeal Zwayne: I will love you, o Lord, my strength, the Lord, is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my strength, in whom I will trust my shield, in the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
- 40:06Emeal Zwayne: I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised.
- 40:09Emeal Zwayne: So shall I be saved from my enemies.
- 40:11Emeal Zwayne: The pangs of death surrounded me and the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.
- 40:16Emeal Zwayne: The sorrows of shield surrounded me.
- 40:17Emeal Zwayne: The snares of death confronted me.
- 40:19Emeal Zwayne: In my distress, I called upon the Lord and cried out to my God.
- 40:24Emeal Zwayne: He heard my voice from his temple and my cry came before him, even to his ears.
- 40:29Ray Comfort: Mark, you're right, there was Psalm 30, verse 5.
- 40:31Ray Comfort: Wow, it just comes to you like that.
- 40:34Ray Comfort: Yeah, I've got it.
- 40:34Ray Comfort: That's on my mind.
- 40:36Mark Spence: Ray has.
- 40:36Mark Spence: Ray you have.
- 40:37Mark Spence: You have written this scripture over and over again and told people about this.
- 40:40Mark Spence: Psalm 37, take the light in the Lord.
- 40:41Mark Spence: He'll give you the desires of your heart.
- 40:44Ray Comfort: Yes, yeah, it's a, it's a.
- 40:46Ray Comfort: It's one that's taken out of context and it's perfect for a prosperity preacher.
- 40:51Ray Comfort: It's perfect for a pregnant prosperity preacher, because it's like, just if you want it, you just begin claiming it.
- 40:57Ray Comfort: God will give you the desires of your heart.
- 40:59Ray Comfort: But they don't realize or preach that when you become a Christian, your desires die.
- 41:03Ray Comfort: You get on your knees and say not my will, but yours be done.
- 41:06Ray Comfort: So when we cry out for our desires, it's not for a bigger car, a bigger house, more carpet and thicker carpet, whatever it's all.
- 41:13Ray Comfort: God, my desires are like your desires, because I'm trusting in you and his desire is that none perish.
- 41:20Ray Comfort: And so when you've got God's desires as your desires, that's when you can have confidence that it'll grant your desires to you.
- 41:27Ray Comfort: So good that's good, yeah.
- 41:29Emeal Zwayne: Psalm 27,.
- 41:30Emeal Zwayne: One through three.
- 41:31Emeal Zwayne: The Lord is my light, my salvation.
- 41:33Emeal Zwayne: Whom shall I fear?
- 41:33Emeal Zwayne: The Lord is the strength of my life.
- 41:35Emeal Zwayne: Of whom shall I be afraid?
- 41:36Emeal Zwayne: When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes, they stumbled and fell.
- 41:41Emeal Zwayne: Though an army main camp against me, my heart shall not fear the war may rise against me.
- 41:47Emeal Zwayne: In this I will be confident, man, I mean.
- 41:50Ray Comfort: That's why it's good One thing, if Scotty here today comes after that one thing have.
- 41:54Ray Comfort: I.
- 41:55Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, verse four.
- 41:56Emeal Zwayne: One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will.
- 41:58Emeal Zwayne: I seek that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.
- 42:01Ray Comfort: That was the next verse.
- 42:02Emeal Zwayne: The beauty of the Lord and the inquirer in his temple, for in time of trouble, he shall hide me in his pavilion, in the secret place of his tabernacle.
- 42:08Emeal Zwayne: He shall hide me, he shall set me high upon a rock.
- 42:11Emeal Zwayne: That's why it's so good to memorize my Psalms, because they become your prayers.
- 42:16Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, when we find ourselves in those times of distress and anguish and pain, we can connect our hearts with the truth of God's word.
- 42:24Emeal Zwayne: I mean, the Lord put these in here for a purpose.
- 42:28Ray Comfort: You know you've reminded me of Psalm 91, I'm sure you're familiar with it he that dwells in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
- 42:35Ray Comfort: And then it goes on promises A thousand fold at one side, etc.
- 42:38Ray Comfort: It takes me back like 400 years when I used to visit a 91-year-old Presbyterian minister, the Reverend George Denson, and he would tell me of when he, as a chaplain, would minister to soldiers who were about to go to war and he said there were grown men who would be weeping in fear.
- 42:55Ray Comfort: We just you, don't really think about that.
- 42:57Ray Comfort: These guys are going into battle.
- 43:00Ray Comfort: I was watching a documentary the other day about D-Day and I was saying 50% of these guys are going to die.
- 43:05Ray Comfort: That was before they went to battle.
- 43:06Ray Comfort: It was even more than that and these guys would weep and that's the Psalm he read to them and told them to stand on.
- 43:12Ray Comfort: And it just brought back that memory to me.
- 43:14Oscar Navarro: Oh yeah, and I would have been like I think I forgot something back in my country.
- 43:22Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, I mean so much.
- 43:22Emeal Zwayne: I love this too.
- 43:23Emeal Zwayne: And also in Psalm 127,.
- 43:26Emeal Zwayne: I would have lost heart unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
- 43:30Emeal Zwayne: Wait on the Lord, be of good courage and he shall strengthen your heart.
- 43:35Emeal Zwayne: Wait, I say on the Lord.
- 43:36Ray Comfort: Amen, psalm 46, the earthquake Psalm for Californias.
- 43:41Ray Comfort: God's their refuge and strength, a very present help in an earthquake.
- 43:45Ray Comfort: No, it doesn't say that in times of trouble, but yeah, so that, yeah, you're right.
- 43:50Ray Comfort: Every way you look, there's just promises from God about trouble.
- 43:54Mark Spence: You know, in Psalm 46, when you talk about that in verse 10 it says be still and know that I'm gone.
- 43:59Mark Spence: I like the Hebrew rendering of that.
- 44:01Mark Spence: It's literally it's cease your striving and let me show you that I'm gone.
- 44:07Emeal Zwayne: That's great.
- 44:07Emeal Zwayne: I love that.
- 44:08Emeal Zwayne: This is one of my absolute favorite Psalms.
- 44:11Emeal Zwayne: It's Psalm 131.
- 44:11Emeal Zwayne: I love it.
- 44:12Emeal Zwayne: It's short, it's brief, but the depth of it.
- 44:15Emeal Zwayne: Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty.
- 44:19Emeal Zwayne: Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me.
- 44:23Emeal Zwayne: Surely, I have calmed and quieted my soul like a weaned child with his mother.
- 44:28Emeal Zwayne: Like a weaned child is my soul within me.
- 44:32Emeal Zwayne: Oh Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forever.
- 44:35Emeal Zwayne: I love that, you know, like a weaned child.
- 44:38Emeal Zwayne: I mean, I have two grandkids.
- 44:40Emeal Zwayne: One of them now is he's only six or seven weeks and you know he's in the nursing phase and you know that when that time comes and the child is weaned and at rest and at peace, and it's just like ah that's how I want my soul to be in the Lord.
- 44:54Ray Comfort: You, you reading.
- 44:55Ray Comfort: That was just a tonic the way you read it and it just gave me an idea.
- 44:58Ray Comfort: I signed a contract I can use Psalm 91 of the New King James version and record it.
- 45:02Ray Comfort: I haven't done it, but I'd like us four to do it.
- 45:05Ray Comfort: We can do like 30 Psalms each Harmonize.
- 45:09Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, not all together, but seriously, seriously.
- 45:12Ray Comfort: I just love the way you read easy and same Oscar and Mark the way you read.
- 45:15Ray Comfort: I think it'd be a tonic for the four of us just to go through Psalms, not commenting, but just reading them.
- 45:20Ray Comfort: People can listen to that.
- 45:22Emeal Zwayne: Yeah, so so many.
- 45:24Emeal Zwayne: I mean just a few more quick ones.
- 45:26Emeal Zwayne: Psalm 3418, the Lord is near to those who have a broken heart and saved such as have a contrite spirit.
- 45:31Emeal Zwayne: You didn't read that.
- 45:32Emeal Zwayne: I should normally read it.
- 45:33Emeal Zwayne: Read it like he's a reader Psalm 147, 3, he heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.
- 45:40Emeal Zwayne: You like that right A little reverb there.
- 45:44Emeal Zwayne: Psalm 41 to 2,.
- 45:45Emeal Zwayne: I waited patiently for the Lord and he inclined to me and he heard my cry.
- 45:49Emeal Zwayne: He also brought me out, up out of a horrible pit, out of the Myrie clay, and set my feet upon a rock and established my steps.
- 45:56Emeal Zwayne: You know, I mean, and you envision times in your life where you feel like it's the end of the rope.
- 46:01Emeal Zwayne: I mean, I've said it many times it's like sometimes I feel I fall off the edge of a cliff.
- 46:05Emeal Zwayne: I'm flying toward the ground and right before my nose hits it and I splat, I feel this tug and I look up as I'm going back up.
- 46:12Emeal Zwayne: The Lord had me by my suspenders the whole time.
- 46:14Emeal Zwayne: It's my feet back upon that rock and establishes me.
- 46:19Emeal Zwayne: So yeah, friends, we can go on and on, and on, and on, and on.
- 46:24Ray Comfort: We do.
- 46:25Oscar Navarro: There's a lot of good ones, you know it's.
- 46:27Oscar Navarro: I don't know if we did this on purpose or not, but we skipped Psalm 1.
- 46:30Oscar Navarro: Psalm 1 is so important because it's actually it kind of gives precedence for all of the Psalms.
- 46:36Oscar Navarro: It's an introduction for every Psalm that comes after it.
- 46:39Oscar Navarro: And I just want to read it here.
- 46:41Oscar Navarro: And I think the thing that's important to recognize as I read this is you know, we live in a culture where we want to pretend like everything is a spectrum, but the scriptures often speak in binaries.
- 46:53Oscar Navarro: You were either born in sin, under Adam's reign and rule, or you were born again in heritages of Christ's righteousness.
- 47:01Oscar Navarro: There is no binary, I'm sorry, there is no spectrum between and here Psalm 1 gives us two, it gives us a binary.
- 47:10Oscar Navarro: You're one of these two people.
- 47:12Oscar Navarro: Here it is.
- 47:13Oscar Navarro: Blessed is the man who walks not in the council of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord and on his law he meditates day and night.
- 47:25Oscar Navarro: He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit and its season and its leaf does not wither, and all he does, he prospers.
- 47:35Oscar Navarro: The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
- 47:41Oscar Navarro: Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous, for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
- 47:52Oscar Navarro: You have in that Psalm the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked.
- 47:57Oscar Navarro: And all 150 Psalms, all 149 that follow after Psalm 1, shows us the way of the righteous, and so we should turn it into our own playlists and for our own lives, that we meditate on and memorize and pray through.
- 48:13Emeal Zwayne: Amen, friends, and and remember.
- 48:15Emeal Zwayne: Sometimes, I think, as men especially, we can get this idea that the Psalms are a little too soft for us.
- 48:25Emeal Zwayne: Don't forget who King David was, mighty King David, the one who who slayed Goliath, the one who was noted for having killed his tens of thousands, and he was known as the sweet psalmist of Israel.
- 48:42Emeal Zwayne: And so soak your soul in the Psalms and, and, and see the faithfulness and the goodness of God.
- 48:49Emeal Zwayne: Let them be your comfort, your help and your encouragement.
- 48:53Mark Spence: And let it be an encouragement to us to write poetry, to write down our prayers to sing our songs before the Lord.
- 48:59Emeal Zwayne: Good reminder, mark.
