- 0:32Speaker 2: With us today in the locker room and a beautiful
- 0:35Speaker 2: another beautiful.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Day here in pittsburgh hopefully the weather.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Is going to hold off i think it is it's
- 0:39Speaker 2: supposed to be pretty good i think on sunday relatively
- 0:42Speaker 2: warm for this time of year if you're one of
- 0:43Speaker 2: those people that looks ahead to the weather and how
- 0:46Speaker 2: it might impact a football game uh willie cologne how
- 0:50Speaker 2: are you doing today my friend.
- 0:52Speaker 4: All is well rob here in sunny mississippi uh i
- 0:56Speaker 4: just finished an awesome workout It's time to shave the
- 0:59Speaker 4: bear coat, Rob. I know it's usually the opposite. You
- 1:01Speaker 4: try to do it before summer. I happen to be
- 1:03Speaker 4: late on that, so I'm doing it before winter. Nevertheless,
- 1:07Speaker 4: it's Wednesday, baby.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Let's get rolling.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it is a good time of year to do that,
- 1:11Speaker 2: by the way. It's tough in the summer. You know,
- 1:13Speaker 2: the summer's the time for lazing about and having some
- 1:17Speaker 2: good food, you know. But now is the time because
- 1:22Speaker 2: holidays are coming.
- 1:24Speaker 3: It is coming.
- 1:25Speaker 4: You know, and I think part of it too, Rob,
- 1:27Speaker 4: is when, you know, I think every man goes through
- 1:29Speaker 4: this where you don't notice yourself until you walk by
- 1:33Speaker 4: the mirror instantly, you know?
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:36Speaker 4: And you're like, oh, that's what I look like? You're like, oh,
- 1:39Speaker 4: I got to tighten up. So that's where I'm at
- 1:41Speaker 4: right now.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Good.
- 1:42Speaker 5: Good man.
- 1:43Speaker 2: What kind of, just real quick, because we have a
- 1:46Speaker 2: lot of people that are probably wondering, what kind of
- 1:48Speaker 2: workout do you do?
- 1:49Speaker 5: How long does it take you to do it?
- 1:51Speaker 4: Man, so I try to do a 30 to 35-minute workout.
- 1:56Speaker 4: You know, just every other day is different. When there
- 2:00Speaker 4: may be legs, when there may be arms, when we're back,
- 2:02Speaker 4: you know, I kind of do a variation thing, and
- 2:04Speaker 4: I always end with 30 minutes to 45 minutes of cardio.
- 2:07Speaker 4: So the lighter days, I'll do 45 minutes. The heavier days,
- 2:12Speaker 4: I'll just do 30, and I try to get back
- 2:15Speaker 4: in time to talk to the great Rob King and
- 2:17Speaker 4: Max Stark.
- 2:17Speaker 3: So that's where I'm at.
- 2:19Speaker 2: So total time, we're looking at an hour and 15,
- 2:22Speaker 2: hour 20, hour 30.
- 2:23Speaker 3: The thing about it, I don't know about you, Rob.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I've fallen. There's a pandemic going on.
- 2:29Speaker 4: I don't know if you're aware of this, where you
- 2:31Speaker 4: pull up to the gym and you're sitting in your
- 2:34Speaker 4: car for 25 minutes going through a death scroll or
- 2:37Speaker 4: trying to catch up to people that you really don't
- 2:39Speaker 4: want to talk to, but you're just not ready to
- 2:42Speaker 4: open the door.
- 2:42Speaker 3: They always say the heaviest weight in the gym is
- 2:45Speaker 3: the front door. I've never heard that before. Yeah, it's true.
- 2:51Speaker 3: It's never the 45 plates that sit there aimlessly.
- 2:54Speaker 4: It's the front door. Once you kind of pull that
- 2:56Speaker 4: thing open, baby, you actually get over the threshold. Now
- 2:59Speaker 4: you're locked in. So it's really the procrastination while I'm
- 3:03Speaker 4: sitting in the parking lot looking at the gym that
- 3:06Speaker 4: I really have to conquer.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I've yet to do that.
- 3:09Speaker 4: I think part of it is me trying to align
- 3:11Speaker 4: myself like, all right, you're going to grind it out.
- 3:13Speaker 4: You're going to finish the workout. You're going to do
- 3:14Speaker 4: everything you need to do because it's all about you
- 3:17Speaker 4: and bettering yourself. Trying to have that power talk before
- 3:20Speaker 4: you walk through those doors is important. And another thing
- 3:23Speaker 4: is you try not to– a lot of people are–
- 3:27Speaker 4: you know, we live– once again, we live in a
- 3:29Speaker 4: very body-conscious society right now, which annoys the.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Hell out of me. You try to make sure you
- 3:35Speaker 3: have the.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Right clothing that's not kind of, you know, oozing out
- 3:39Speaker 4: the fat. So that's always– that takes some time, too. So–
- 3:43Speaker 4: You got to do a reach test.
- 3:44Speaker 3: You got to stretch your hands. Yeah. Make sure you
- 3:47Speaker 3: don't have that muffin top looking at the bottom.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 3: That's before you eat.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Big Max, I was doing some leg raises today, and
- 3:56Speaker 4: the fupa just fell out in front of a bunch
- 3:58Speaker 4: of girls doing some stretches. You talk about humbly. It
- 4:04Speaker 4: was a very humble moment. They looked up like, oh, God.
- 4:07Speaker 4: I said, yeah, that's why I'm here. I'm trying to
- 4:09Speaker 4: get rid of it. Exactly.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Well, one of the liberating parts of getting older is
- 4:16Speaker 2: you become, you know, Ralph Ellison. You become the invisible man, right?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Nobody's looking at you when you get to my age.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So you have that to look forward to. I also
- 4:24Speaker 2: have some advice, Max, that I know you and Willie
- 4:28Speaker 2: know far more about working out, you know, especially with
- 4:32Speaker 2: the weights and all that stuff than I do. But
- 4:34Speaker 2: I've got some advice for Willie. I want to see if, Max,
- 4:36Speaker 2: if you agree with this advice. You know, sometimes you
- 4:39Speaker 2: get in the gym– and you're just running five minutes behind.
- 4:43Speaker 2: And it sounds like Willie might have that all the time.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I'm going to go ahead and say, Willie, you could
- 4:48Speaker 2: probably skip triceps one day if you're running five minutes behind. Max,
- 4:54Speaker 2: I don't know how you feel about that. I think
- 4:55Speaker 2: that's sage advice. I think that's good advice.
- 4:58Speaker 4: It is.
- 4:59Speaker 5: It is.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Buys and tries, not a problem. You are well adept there.
- 5:05Speaker 6: You know, just got probably a little more squat work,
- 5:08Speaker 6: you know, You know, work in the hammies, you know,
- 5:11Speaker 6: but but yeah, no, I definitely agree with with Rob.
- 5:14Speaker 3: You could stand to miss a couple of preacher curls. Yeah.
- 5:18Speaker 4: You know, I blame my wife for the extra attention
- 5:20Speaker 4: to that because she said during when we first met.
- 5:23Speaker 4: One of the things that she's attracted to is my arms. So,
- 5:27Speaker 4: you know, to keep the customers buying the donuts, man,
- 5:29Speaker 4: you got to put a little glaze.
- 5:31Speaker 3: On the thing. So I got to keep the things big. Absolutely.
- 5:38Speaker 5: Oh, that is funny, man. That is absolutely funny. By
- 5:41Speaker 5: the way.
- 5:41Speaker 6: It's like we have a 90s R & B group. Like,
- 5:44Speaker 6: I'm not going there to hear your album from 2017.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Play the hits. Play the greatest hits.
- 5:49Speaker 2: By the way, I don't know if I said this
- 5:50Speaker 2: on the locker room. Or just said it to Max
- 5:52Speaker 2: in private. So I'll say it to you, Willie. So
- 5:55Speaker 2: Willie came up.
- 5:57Speaker 5: I covered the Steelers a little bit when Willie was
- 5:59Speaker 5: there in the locker room. Not very much.
- 6:02Speaker 2: So Willie came up and was doing the sidelines in
- 6:06Speaker 2: the last two preseason games. Came up in the press
- 6:10Speaker 2: box and we had a nice introduction.
- 6:13Speaker 5: You know, hello, how are you? Just a little hello,
- 6:16Speaker 5: quick thing.
- 6:17Speaker 2: And then about maybe 20 minutes, then Willie left, went
- 6:20Speaker 2: down and did his duties. Then Max came up to
- 6:22Speaker 2: the press box, and I said, yeah, I met Willie.
- 6:25Speaker 2: And he's like, yeah, Willie's a good friend of mine.
- 6:27Speaker 2: I said, I just want you to know, I backed
- 6:31Speaker 2: him up against the wall and kind of gave him
- 6:33Speaker 2: the lowdown.
- 6:34Speaker 5: And Max just said, no, you didn't. And I was like,
- 6:36Speaker 5: you're right, man, no, I didn't. It was just as
- 6:41Speaker 5: simple as that. There wasn't even any, like, he was like, no,
- 6:43Speaker 5: you didn't. Like, okay, all right.
- 6:45Speaker 4: Yep.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no back and forth. We just had to
- 6:47Speaker 3: squash that will. You know what I'm saying? You just
- 6:49Speaker 3: got to sometimes just, hey, just.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yeah. Listen.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:54Speaker 3: We know our own.
- 6:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 6:58Speaker 5: I'm just happy to have large friends.
- 7:00Speaker 2: And by the way, I'm not one of those guys
- 7:01Speaker 2: that takes advantage of that. I'm sure you guys have
- 7:04Speaker 2: been around that guy where you're just like, hey, man,
- 7:06Speaker 2: pipe down, dude.
- 7:08Speaker 5: Pipe down.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Well, Rob, I'm going to be honest with you. It's
- 7:11Speaker 3: never the friends. It's the wives. It's the wives. It's
- 7:13Speaker 3: the wives who take advantage of it. Oh, absolutely.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Yeah, you probably get one or two Napoleon complexes that
- 7:19Speaker 4: happen to be amongst you, but those usually kind of
- 7:22Speaker 4: temper off. It's your wives who feel like, because they
- 7:25Speaker 4: got nudged by somebody else in the supermarket, that now
- 7:29Speaker 4: they want to now feel like they can call upon
- 7:31Speaker 4: the Terminator, right?
- 7:32Speaker 3: Like they can tap a button and we.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Will immerse out of another realm and be like, who
- 7:37Speaker 4: messed with our wives, right?
- 7:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 7:39Speaker 4: And so it's the wives who usually set us up
- 7:41Speaker 4: for a UFC fight in the middle of a parking
- 7:44Speaker 4: lot when all we want to do is just not
- 7:46Speaker 4: hurt our back trying to load the car with groceries.
- 7:49Speaker 3: It's so true, man.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Your wife seems to feel like in the process of
- 7:54Speaker 4: buying the case of water and the chicken, she wants
- 7:57Speaker 4: to set you up for the 1 o'clock scrap with
- 7:59Speaker 4: old Sammy in the backyard.
- 8:00Speaker 3: So it's the wives that do the damage. Max, what
- 8:03Speaker 3: do you do in these days workout-wise?
- 8:09Speaker 6: So what I try and do is, um, my biggest
- 8:11Speaker 6: thing is like, I try and hit 10,000 steps.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Like that's the biggest thing. So how do I get
- 8:17Speaker 3: to 10,000?
- 8:18Speaker 6: You know, it's, uh, I've now started walking the dog
- 8:21Speaker 6: now that it's actually not, you know, like walking on,
- 8:25Speaker 6: on the bottom layers of hell when you go outside
- 8:27Speaker 6: where it's 112 degrees that my shoes start melting.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Um, yeah, I usually take the dog on like a 30,
- 8:33Speaker 3: 35 minute walk.
- 8:33Speaker 6: And then, I just do, actually, funny enough, I only
- 8:36Speaker 6: do a 15-minute workout, and it's all body weight at
- 8:39Speaker 6: this point.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Oh, good.
- 8:40Speaker 6: Like, I pick up weights if I'm away, like at
- 8:44Speaker 6: a hotel gym, just because it's like, you know, vanity, pride,
- 8:48Speaker 6: you know, hey, you know, sun's out, guns out, right?
- 8:50Speaker 3: You know, it's game day.
- 8:51Speaker 6: But on my daily, like, when I'm at home, it's
- 8:55Speaker 6: literally 10,000 steps and a 15-minute body weight workout, and
- 8:59Speaker 6: that's just squats, push-ups, and movement cardio. So whether it's
- 9:03Speaker 6: jump rope, mixing in with, um, just shadow boxing, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 6: doing some, doing some crunches, like just 15 minutes. And
- 9:11Speaker 6: I just put a timer on and I just alternate
- 9:14Speaker 6: between them, but 15 minutes of continuous movement.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Uh, exercises for body weight. Cause you know, I'm just like,
- 9:21Speaker 3: I just got to move. Like you have to get
- 9:23Speaker 3: in the habit.
- 9:23Speaker 6: Cause like Willie said, like the biggest, the biggest door,
- 9:26Speaker 6: you know, the biggest weight is the front door.
- 9:28Speaker 3: And I have no excuse because mine's in the basement.
- 9:30Speaker 6: So literally my biggest barrier is walking back up the
- 9:34Speaker 6: stairs afterwards. That's what actually gets me well. It's like, oh, man,
- 9:38Speaker 6: going down is easy. But it's like going back.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Up, I'm like, ugh. Yeah. Left outside of my knee
- 9:45Speaker 3: was starting to hurt.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Last question on the workout thing for both you guys.
- 9:49Speaker 2: So obviously I'm considerably older. But when I was in
- 9:53Speaker 2: college in the 80s, the big thing was the Nebraska workout,
- 9:56Speaker 2: which was– Two hours and 15 minutes to two and
- 9:59Speaker 2: a half. hours in the gym three days a week.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Saturday was your off day. Maybe you did an hour 45.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Always benching, right?
- 10:06Speaker 2: We were always trying to see how much you could bench.
- 10:08Speaker 3: It was the frat boy workout.
- 10:09Speaker 2: The benching took half an hour because you'd do one set,
- 10:12Speaker 2: you'd gab around, and you're trying to recover. You're trying
- 10:15Speaker 2: to buy yourself time to recover so you could max
- 10:17Speaker 2: out your bench and that kind of stuff. Did you guys...
- 10:20Speaker 2: Had it changed? I remember when I went back to the–
- 10:22Speaker 2: so first of all, when I quit, I had never
- 10:24Speaker 2: lifted until college. I lifted in college. You feel great,
- 10:28Speaker 2: and I'm like, man, I'm going to lift for the
- 10:29Speaker 2: rest of my life. And the minute I was done
- 10:31Speaker 2: with my last game, I didn't lift again for like
- 10:32Speaker 2: 10 years. But when I went back to the gym,
- 10:36Speaker 2: everyone was doing these 35, 45-minute workouts, like high tempo, boom, boom, boom, boom.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Is that what you guys grew up doing, or did
- 10:45Speaker 2: you guys do those real lengthy workouts too?
- 10:49Speaker 4: Uh well you know for us we did the lengthy
- 10:52Speaker 4: workouts because there was a lot of there was a
- 10:54Speaker 4: lot of dynamic stuff before you actually lift weights right
- 10:57Speaker 4: so there was a lot of mobility and dynamic movement
- 10:59Speaker 4: and getting a sweat and foot ladders and all that
- 11:02Speaker 4: stuff so that took part of your workout and then
- 11:04Speaker 4: you went through whatever weight training you had to do
- 11:06Speaker 4: and then afterwards you did some cardio so yeah we
- 11:08Speaker 4: hours would add up to about two hours in total
- 11:11Speaker 4: and plus now i think you're starting to see is
- 11:15Speaker 4: you know, people just don't have the attention span to
- 11:17Speaker 4: stand in the gym anymore like that.
- 11:19Speaker 3: They just don't. So you find people saying, hey, this
- 11:22Speaker 3: is my clock. This is my window.
- 11:23Speaker 4: I'm going to superset everything and try to be out
- 11:27Speaker 4: in a reasonable time.
- 11:29Speaker 3: The people that who.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Are like hanging out for two hours, just crushing it
- 11:33Speaker 4: at the gym, you know, you're doing obviously you want
- 11:35Speaker 4: to train for a purpose, but to you also burn
- 11:37Speaker 4: yourself out. And so I think, you know, Max kind
- 11:40Speaker 4: of alluded to it. You want to do something that's
- 11:43Speaker 4: challenging but that fits your window because if you're constantly
- 11:47Speaker 4: rushing to the gym cramming it in and rushing out
- 11:50Speaker 4: and you know you're trying to it wears on you
- 11:53Speaker 4: so the purpose of working out is obviously for health
- 11:56Speaker 4: purposes but also for mental clarity i to me working
- 12:00Speaker 4: out is more um therapy than anything to be honest
- 12:03Speaker 4: with you i don't even the cosmetics are just what
- 12:05Speaker 4: they're what it is um it just allows my brain
- 12:08Speaker 4: to let go and kind of have that's like kind
- 12:10Speaker 4: of my alone time to myself. So that's what it
- 12:13Speaker 4: is in entirety for me.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yeah, so I think that's a really– I love the
- 12:21Speaker 2: way you put that.
- 12:22Speaker 5: And, Max, I don't know if you get this too.
- 12:24Speaker 2: So most of my activity is the same thing Max
- 12:30Speaker 2: talked about. Get me those 10,000 steps, and that's the minimum.
- 12:34Speaker 2: If I'm trying to cut back some LBs, it's more
- 12:36Speaker 2: like 13,000 or above in the steps trying.
- 12:40Speaker 5: To get that. But one of the things that I've enjoyed,
- 12:42Speaker 5: I was never a walker. I was always a runner.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I ran to get my exercise or I played hoops
- 12:46Speaker 2: or whatever, preferably playing basketball. But if I couldn't do that,
- 12:50Speaker 2: I would go hit a treadmill or whatever or run
- 12:52Speaker 2: around the neighborhood.
- 12:53Speaker 5: I haven't run in years.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But one of the things that I like about walking,
- 12:57Speaker 2: and I don't know if you get this, Max, is
- 12:58Speaker 2: that you get to a certain point and the mind
- 13:01Speaker 2: begins to clear. I have a hard time clearing my mind.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I remember sitting down trying meditation once. And you set
- 13:09Speaker 2: the clock. And I'm sitting there and like, I'm like, man,
- 13:12Speaker 2: how long have I been doing this? Man, this is,
- 13:14Speaker 2: I look over, it's like 40 seconds.
- 13:16Speaker 5: Really? That's it?
- 13:18Speaker 3: You know?
- 13:20Speaker 2: So, and then like when I go to, when I
- 13:21Speaker 2: go to sleep at night, I have to read a book.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I have to shut down my mind and focus on
- 13:26Speaker 2: one thing. So the book helps me get to sleep.
- 13:28Speaker 2: But walking does that for me, Max. It's like all
- 13:30Speaker 2: of a sudden I get like two miles in and
- 13:33Speaker 2: my mind is freed up and, you know, whatever it takes,
- 13:35Speaker 2: I guess, huh?
- 13:36Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I mean, mental clarity is a big thing, right?
- 13:39Speaker 6: When you don't have a responsibility, you know, and I
- 13:44Speaker 6: think those walks with my dog, I only have one responsibility.
- 13:47Speaker 6: It's just make sure that my dog is paying attention
- 13:51Speaker 6: and that I'm wearing him out, right?
- 13:53Speaker 3: That's the biggest deal with it.
- 13:55Speaker 6: But I find most of my mental clarity, like, I
- 13:58Speaker 6: don't know if this is like with you guys, but
- 14:00Speaker 6: since I drive a lot, I usually don't turn on
- 14:03Speaker 6: the radio or... do anything like i just drive and
- 14:07Speaker 6: my wife's like oh yeah with you like why didn't
- 14:09Speaker 6: you put the radio on i'm like oh sorry i
- 14:12Speaker 6: was just i was just i was just zoning out
- 14:14Speaker 6: like that's also my zone out time so anytime oh
- 14:16Speaker 6: max yeah yeah no sorry right yeah i mean that
- 14:21Speaker 6: that's the biggest thing.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Yeah i'm sorry to cut you off and i apologize
- 14:25Speaker 4: yeah when i was during my time when i was
- 14:27Speaker 4: doing morning radio and i would have to be up
- 14:29Speaker 4: at five in the morning and drive into new york
- 14:31Speaker 4: city to be at the Series 6M building and be live,
- 14:35Speaker 4: go live at 7 or whatever. I was– if somebody
- 14:39Speaker 4: was to see me driving down the parkway, I looked
- 14:41Speaker 4: like Michael Myers. I was stone-faced with no music. Like,
- 14:45Speaker 4: I just– I couldn't take– and I'm naturally not a
- 14:48Speaker 4: morning person, which is tough because most of my jobs
- 14:50Speaker 4: are in the morning. But nevertheless– I'm, I'm always in
- 14:55Speaker 4: the car and get silent. So if, if somebody was
- 14:58Speaker 4: to see me like, man, Willie's in a bad mood. No,
- 15:00Speaker 4: I'm just, I just cannot process the world until like,
- 15:03Speaker 4: I kind of like, it takes me about 30 minutes,
- 15:05Speaker 4: 45 minutes before I'm like, okay, like, all right, what
- 15:08Speaker 4: would I get? I cannot, I don't, my mom, my
- 15:10Speaker 4: wife is a morning person and she can wake up
- 15:12Speaker 4: and have an open her eyes and have a damn monologue.
- 15:16Speaker 3: I cannot do that. I am like, That's one of
- 15:18Speaker 3: our biggest struggles. She's like, good morning. I'm just like,
- 15:22Speaker 3: not now. Shut up. I can't. It's like, is it
- 15:27Speaker 3: really a good morning? Are you sure about that? She
- 15:30Speaker 3: can rip off the Gettysburg speech. I cannot.
- 15:33Speaker 4: I have to. It takes me a good minute to
- 15:36Speaker 4: kind of open up to the world.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I got to tell you guys, I'm so glad that
- 15:41Speaker 2: we've had this little conversation because I thought I was
- 15:44Speaker 2: becoming like– You know the Grinch?
- 15:47Speaker 5: You know the Grinch who stole Christmas? He says, oh,
- 15:49Speaker 5: the noise, noise, noise, noise. I'm that way.
- 15:54Speaker 2: I love turning off the noise and getting in my
- 15:56Speaker 2: car and having silence.
- 15:59Speaker 5: So it's not just me. I'm not the Grinch.
- 16:01Speaker 4: No.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Well, we're not saying I'm not the Grinch, but in
- 16:02Speaker 5: this instance.
- 16:04Speaker 3: No, you're doing just fine.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Nice.
- 16:06Speaker 6: You're among fellow Grinch-like behavior. So you're welcomed here. You know,
- 16:13Speaker 6: they talk about there's a group for everybody. You're in
- 16:15Speaker 6: the right group right now.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Good deal.
- 16:16Speaker 6: We're in the non-morning group, and as good our show
- 16:18Speaker 6: is at noon.
- 16:21Speaker 3: So we can avoid most of the morning stuff.
- 16:24Speaker 2: By the way, no offense to Jim Carrey, but give
- 16:28Speaker 2: me Boris Karloff.
- 16:30Speaker 5: Can we agree on that? We're not in the season.
- 16:32Speaker 5: I know we're not in Christmas season, but yes.
- 16:34Speaker 3: We're not in Christmas season yet. You're still like.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Two months early. Jim Carrey's fine. He's fine. Did a
- 16:38Speaker 5: great job. But Boris Karloff, come on.
- 16:40Speaker 3: It was a live action versus a cartoon. I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 3: we can get into the semantics of it later.
- 16:45Speaker 6: But, I mean, yes, the voice and what you think
- 16:47Speaker 6: of as the Grinch and the narration, yes, absolutely. But
- 16:50Speaker 6: the physical embodiment, I think Jim Carrey did a great
- 16:53Speaker 6: job of physically embodying what Boris Karloff created.
- 16:57Speaker 5: And we can have a joke conversation.
- 16:58Speaker 2: And final little trivia thing before we actually start talking
- 17:01Speaker 2: about some football. Do you know the voice of the Grinch?
- 17:06Speaker 2: The singing voice? I wouldn't touch you, the ten-and-a-half-foot pole.
- 17:09Speaker 2: is the same as Tony the Tiger. Did you know that?
- 17:11Speaker 4: Oh, really?
- 17:12Speaker 5: Remember Tony the Tiger from the commercial?
- 17:13Speaker 3: No, did not know that.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:16Speaker 5: I'm here. I'm here for you guys.
- 17:17Speaker 3: I'm here for you. Oh, man. You're great.
- 17:20Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 17:23Speaker 3: Rob is like, that's Jeeves.
- 17:25Speaker 5: Okay.
- 17:27Speaker 2: By the way, some of my favorite books at the end,
- 17:30Speaker 2: the Birdie and Jeeves books. Anyway, now we're getting further afield.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Too far afield.
- 17:34Speaker 5: After we got off.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Yesterday, Sean Murphy Bunting had been signed in the morning.
- 17:39Speaker 2: The Steelers nab Terrell Smith. So they've added two defensive
- 17:42Speaker 2: backs to the active roster. You know, obviously, Mike McCarthy
- 17:47Speaker 2: said he didn't know much about Jamel Dean. He thought
- 17:49Speaker 2: he was progressing. Again, we talked about this a little bit.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Just tried to get some football chatter in here, Max,
- 17:55Speaker 2: before we had to break.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Exactly. So we actually could say this was a football segment?
- 17:59Speaker 5: Yes, exactly. We're salvaging this.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Danico Slaughter got re-signed to the practice squad.
- 18:03Speaker 5: He did.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Which, you know, and by the way, I know that
- 18:07Speaker 2: we do a lot of– and this happens in baseball too. Oh,
- 18:12Speaker 2: my goodness, we're going to DFA this guy. Everybody's going
- 18:14Speaker 2: to line up to be taking him. No, you're probably
- 18:16Speaker 2: going to be able to sign him back in a
- 18:17Speaker 2: minor league deal. It's kind of like that with the
- 18:19Speaker 2: practice squad. Like Danico Slaughter, when I saw they released him,
- 18:22Speaker 2: I'm like, man, this guy's been on the active roster,
- 18:25Speaker 2: and I think he's a good football player right back
- 18:28Speaker 2: in the practice squad. So that was good to see,
- 18:29Speaker 2: but it makes me wonder about The availability of Jamel Dean,
- 18:35Speaker 2: and I really hope that that's not a sign. Signing
- 18:38Speaker 2: two corners, that that's not a sign, Max, that Jamel
- 18:43Speaker 2: Dean's not going to be able to go. We'll know
- 18:45Speaker 2: more today when the first injury report comes out, but
- 18:48Speaker 2: they really need Jamel Dean, especially since it looks like
- 18:51Speaker 2: Keenan Allen is probably going to be back after missing
- 18:54Speaker 2: last week with a groin injury.
- 18:56Speaker 6: Yeah, definitely going to need him, and I think this
- 18:59Speaker 6: is probably a precautionary signing.
- 19:01Speaker 3: I mean, you already had a gap. um for one player.
- 19:05Speaker 6: Because of the joey porter trade and then you also
- 19:07Speaker 6: had a gap because of derrick harman being put on
- 19:11Speaker 6: ir so you had to fill two slots so i
- 19:14Speaker 6: i think more so it's a precautionary thing and that's
- 19:17Speaker 6: one that you can always cut move up and down
- 19:21Speaker 6: guys so you do have that flexibility so i think
- 19:23Speaker 6: this was more so we had two open spaces and
- 19:26Speaker 6: what's our weakest position right now it's cornerback. So see
- 19:30Speaker 6: which one can get there faster. But we had two
- 19:32Speaker 6: slots that we had to fill.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Willie?
- 19:36Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I think Max is spot on.
- 19:38Speaker 4: I think right now, if you're the Steelers and you
- 19:41Speaker 4: turned on last week's tape, you need some veteran leadership
- 19:44Speaker 4: and you also need guys who can, you know, cover
- 19:47Speaker 4: in the back. And if you turned on the tape
- 19:49Speaker 4: for the Colts last last week while they were in London, man,
- 19:52Speaker 4: their offense is stagnant.
- 19:53Speaker 3: It's not a very good one.
- 19:54Speaker 4: So they feel like they want to open it up
- 19:57Speaker 4: by throwing the ball, and that's why you go get
- 19:59Speaker 4: corners so you can combat some of that.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Okay, so we're going to do our power rankings. Jim
- 20:04Speaker 2: Box is going to join us. We're going to go
- 20:05Speaker 2: over the NFL power rankings as distributed by The Athletic. Okay, guys,
- 20:10Speaker 2: I'm going to put you on the spot. Right now,
- 20:13Speaker 2: before we go to break, I want your number one
- 20:16Speaker 2: team and your guess at where the Steelers are ranked.
- 20:19Speaker 2: And I have not looked at this. So who's the
- 20:22Speaker 2: number one team in football? Who do you think will
- 20:23Speaker 2: be ranked number one?
- 20:25Speaker 3: No, you know what?
- 20:25Speaker 5: Better yet, who's your number one and where do you
- 20:28Speaker 5: think the Steelers are going to be ranked?
- 20:31Speaker 3: You want me to go or you want Max to go?
- 20:32Speaker 3: Go ahead. You take it, Will. Okay. I think the
- 20:35Speaker 3: number one team.
- 20:36Speaker 4: In football right now, for the second week in a
- 20:41Speaker 4: row is the San Francisco 49ers, and I do think
- 20:44Speaker 4: the Steelers are probably ranked 23rd.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I'm going to go 49ers and 19. I think the
- 20:53Speaker 2: 49ers and Chiefs, I think the Chiefs have an interesting argument,
- 20:55Speaker 2: but I think the 49ers were ranked number one last week,
- 20:58Speaker 2: so I think they'll be ranked one again. I'm going
- 21:00Speaker 2: to go 19 on the Steelers, Max.
- 21:03Speaker 6: All right, I'm going to go Chiefs because I feel
- 21:06Speaker 6: like the Chiefs after last week kind of showed us who,
- 21:09Speaker 6: you know, that they are actually officially real. You know,
- 21:14Speaker 6: played a great game against the Raiders and came out,
- 21:17Speaker 6: you know, the Battle of Unbeatens, and they came out
- 21:19Speaker 6: on top. The dust settled, so I like them at
- 21:21Speaker 6: number one. Steelers, I'm going to say Steelers.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I'm going to split. I'm going to say.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Actually, no, I'm not going to split the difference because
- 21:31Speaker 3: 21 is too rich. I'm going to go 22. I'm
- 21:34Speaker 3: going to go 22nd. I'm going to go in between
- 21:37Speaker 3: both of you. Okay.
- 21:38Speaker 2: All right. Again, this is Scout's honor. We have not
- 21:41Speaker 2: checked these things. So we're going to check them when
- 21:43Speaker 2: we come back. We're also going to have Jim Wexel
- 21:44Speaker 2: joining us a little bit later on as news trickles
- 21:47Speaker 2: in from Steelers practice. If we get any, we will
- 21:49Speaker 2: pass it along to you as well. When we continue
- 21:51Speaker 2: in the locker room here on the Steelers Audio Network.
- 22:00Speaker 1: This is In the Locker Room with Rob King, Max Starks,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and Willie Colon on Steelers Nation Radio. Brought to you
- 22:08Speaker 1: in part by the Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct
- 22:11Speaker 1: from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop.steelers.com.
- 22:16Speaker 1: And by your neighborhood Ford store. The F-150 is the
- 22:20Speaker 1: official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 22:24Speaker 2: And thanks very much for being back with us. This
- 22:25Speaker 2: is the time of the week we like to take
- 22:28Speaker 2: a look around. the NFL, see what's happening and see
- 22:31Speaker 2: how teams are being perceived, of course, including the Steelers
- 22:35Speaker 2: as well.
- 22:36Speaker 5: We also like to have our.
- 22:37Speaker 2: One overrated team and one underrated team from around the NFL.
- 22:44Speaker 5: So let's get started.
- 22:47Speaker 2: As we suspected, Willie Colon, San Francisco 49ers, number one.
- 22:52Speaker 2: I don't think that's much of a surprise. Max's team,
- 22:55Speaker 2: Kansas City, number two. I don't have any I don't
- 22:58Speaker 2: have any complaints at all with those rankings.
- 23:00Speaker 3: You?
- 23:03Speaker 1: Not at all.
- 23:03Speaker 4: I think if you watch the Niners right now and
- 23:06Speaker 4: the way they play, the Niners and the offensive line
- 23:10Speaker 4: haven't given up a sack all year. Bob Purdy continues
- 23:14Speaker 4: to dominate. And, you know, one person that we should
- 23:16Speaker 4: start talking about about comeback player of the year is
- 23:18Speaker 4: George Kettle. So altogether, there's defense, the offense, Kyle Shanahan.
- 23:23Speaker 4: He has the boys humming at a high level right now,
- 23:26Speaker 4: and it's early, so. Yeah, beware of the fans of
- 23:28Speaker 4: San Francisco 49ers.
- 23:30Speaker 2: And I think you liked the Chiefs early too, Willie,
- 23:31Speaker 2: didn't you? Weren't you a big proponent of them right
- 23:33Speaker 2: away after that opening day victory?
- 23:36Speaker 3: Yeah, because I was a believer in K-9. I thought
- 23:37Speaker 3: Kenneth Walker, who continues to dominate.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Listen, if you turn on that game against the Raiders,
- 23:42Speaker 4: he totally took over that game. And now when you
- 23:46Speaker 4: start to see the offensive line and the way he's
- 23:47Speaker 4: playing along with Patrick Mahomes, Patrick Mahomes doesn't have to
- 23:50Speaker 4: whip out the cape anymore. He has a running back
- 23:52Speaker 4: who can really stabilize the offense.
- 23:54Speaker 3: And they have a.
- 23:55Speaker 4: Defense who's backing him up. LeGarrette Snead had a big
- 23:57Speaker 4: play that caused a fumble. The Chiefs are starting to
- 24:00Speaker 4: look like the Chiefs of old, man. And there's something
- 24:03Speaker 4: to say when you can run the ball, Rob.
- 24:05Speaker 3: So, here we go. Here come the Chiefs.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Well, you know, I think my biggest question about that,
- 24:11Speaker 2: Willie and Max, too, if you want to chime in
- 24:13Speaker 2: on this, was that, you know, and I think it was–
- 24:16Speaker 2: I can't remember if it was Troy Aikman and Joe
- 24:19Speaker 2: Buck in the first game where they were impressed with
- 24:21Speaker 2: the way Walker was running the ball. And then they
- 24:23Speaker 2: basically said if– If their head coach, Andy Reid, can
- 24:31Speaker 2: keep this going and cannot go to his inclination, which
- 24:34Speaker 2: is to pass the ball, right? He wants to throw
- 24:36Speaker 2: the ball and he wants to run the West Coast offense.
- 24:39Speaker 2: And if he can step away from that and not
- 24:42Speaker 2: get in his own way, kind of was what he
- 24:44Speaker 2: was saying, then there's no reason this offense can't continue
- 24:47Speaker 2: to roll. And he said that from game one. And
- 24:49Speaker 2: there's been no hesitation, Max, in giving the ball to
- 24:53Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker.
- 24:55Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:55Speaker 6: And I think that's something that when you think about
- 24:58Speaker 6: the chiefs and when they were rocking and their heyday,
- 25:02Speaker 6: they had to have that balance. Even though we saw
- 25:05Speaker 6: the theatrics of Patrick Mahomes, we saw all of the
- 25:08Speaker 6: heroics that he would come up with some off platform,
- 25:12Speaker 6: throw some left-handed throw under the harm.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Behind the back.
- 25:16Speaker 6: I mean, looking like magic Johnson out there, um, or
- 25:19Speaker 6: Kyrie Irving for the younger generation. Um, They had a
- 25:23Speaker 6: solid run game. Kareem Hunt was a valuable part of
- 25:26Speaker 6: this team. Isaiah Pacheco was a valuable part of this
- 25:28Speaker 6: team in keeping them consistent, and they ran the ball effectively.
- 25:32Speaker 6: They could grind you down to a pulp if they
- 25:34Speaker 6: needed to run, but then they could also throw themselves
- 25:37Speaker 6: out of a bad situation if you were running an
- 25:39Speaker 6: eight-man box, and that's what made them so tough to defend.
- 25:42Speaker 6: When you think about kind of that five-year window where
- 25:45Speaker 6: the AFC championship game had to go through Kansas City,
- 25:48Speaker 6: and they were usually going to be one of the
- 25:49Speaker 6: representative's you know, three out of five Super Bowls in
- 25:52Speaker 6: that time. So I think that's something that we do
- 25:57Speaker 6: see the short, quick passing game, but that's because they
- 26:00Speaker 6: couldn't run the ball. So it was a de facto, like,
- 26:02Speaker 6: we need this to get us in a better situation. But, yeah,
- 26:07Speaker 6: running the football cures a lot of ills. I mean,
- 26:10Speaker 6: it's an old axiom, and people don't like it. It
- 26:12Speaker 6: doesn't score as many points, but when you talk about rhythm, consistency–
- 26:17Speaker 6: and being able to slow the game down so it's
- 26:19Speaker 6: not so up-tempo, high-flying, everybody's going everywhere.
- 26:22Speaker 5: That's what a run game does.
- 26:24Speaker 6: A run game is a balance. It provides an opportunity.
- 26:28Speaker 6: Your defense is tired, right? It doesn't matter if you
- 26:31Speaker 6: score on three plays 75 yards. Your defense has only
- 26:35Speaker 6: been on the sideline for 45 seconds, right? They don't
- 26:38Speaker 6: even have enough time to really get the adjustments in,
- 26:41Speaker 6: let alone get some Gatorade and just kind of take
- 26:43Speaker 6: a breath. So you have to have that balance, and
- 26:46Speaker 6: I think for Kansas City, that was something that they
- 26:48Speaker 6: had that people kind of overlooked because you look at
- 26:50Speaker 6: Patrick Mahomes, you look at Travis Kelsey, but those were
- 26:53Speaker 6: the unsung heroes finding a run game, and when they
- 26:56Speaker 6: have their struggles, it's because they couldn't run the football,
- 26:58Speaker 6: and now they're back to it.
- 27:00Speaker 2: You know, one of my favorite football-isms came from Dave Wanstead,
- 27:05Speaker 2: and it took me a minute to realize what he
- 27:07Speaker 2: was saying, but he's basically saying what you said. He said,
- 27:09Speaker 2: you throw the ball to score points, you run the
- 27:12Speaker 2: ball to win games. And I thought that's kind of
- 27:15Speaker 2: a beautiful way of putting it and very true, I think.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Listen, I think for everybody who's witnessing these running backs
- 27:24Speaker 4: around the league that's starting to kind of get momentum,
- 27:29Speaker 4: and we've talked about Kenneth Walker, B. John Robinson, and,
- 27:33Speaker 4: you know, the list goes on. You know, Tyron Williams,
- 27:36Speaker 4: even from the Rams, has really last couple weeks has
- 27:38Speaker 4: popped off the tape and really done a great job
- 27:41Speaker 4: of helping the Rams. Your staff really hasn't been playing well.
- 27:43Speaker 4: considering that he's been turning over the ball a lot
- 27:46Speaker 4: more than he did last year. But the key to
- 27:49Speaker 4: the run game, as much as we like to talk
- 27:51Speaker 4: about it, generate momentum.
- 27:53Speaker 3: And also, you know, acting as a.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Stabilizer, it also forces the defense to not really get
- 28:00Speaker 4: in their bag, because if you're dominant on the run,
- 28:02Speaker 4: you know, you have to worry about the play action.
- 28:04Speaker 3: And if you have to worry about the play.
- 28:05Speaker 4: Action, now you have to, now you got to give
- 28:08Speaker 4: me between playing the lighter box or heavy box and,
- 28:11Speaker 4: That's when you start to see the talent of some
- 28:13Speaker 4: of these coordinators and defensive coordinators. And so having a
- 28:17Speaker 4: really good running back just doesn't make you one-sided, right?
- 28:20Speaker 3: It allows you to kind of tap into a myriad
- 28:22Speaker 3: of things.
- 28:23Speaker 4: And also see some of the talent that you either
- 28:26Speaker 4: drafted or have on your roster where they can come
- 28:28Speaker 4: to fruition as well.
- 28:29Speaker 3: So it just opens up a lot.
- 28:31Speaker 4: When you see teams that aren't able to run the ball,
- 28:34Speaker 4: it puts so much stress on the offense to really
- 28:37Speaker 4: try to figure out what they can do. We saw
- 28:40Speaker 4: it last week with the Jets, man. They were 0
- 28:43Speaker 4: for 7 on third down. simply because they just simply
- 28:46Speaker 4: couldn't run the ball. And there are other teams who
- 28:49Speaker 4: do run the ball at a good tilt, and you
- 28:52Speaker 4: see it take the pressure off their quarterback and the
- 28:54Speaker 4: pressure off the offensive coordinator because they feel like they
- 28:56Speaker 4: have ways to kind of get out of tough situations
- 28:59Speaker 4: by keeping it on the ground, and it protects the
- 29:01Speaker 4: quarterback from throwing the ball away. So running the ball,
- 29:04Speaker 4: it cures a lot, right? It's the ultimate robot testing.
- 29:06Speaker 4: So not everybody has it, not everybody likes it, but
- 29:10Speaker 4: it's effective.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Okay, number three, Seattle. Number four, Buffalo. Number five, the
- 29:20Speaker 2: Alabama Crimson Tide. Oh, I'm sorry. The LA Rams. I
- 29:24Speaker 2: beg your pardon. I misspoke there. They're, again, following that
- 29:29Speaker 2: federal mandate. They can't fall too far down.
- 29:32Speaker 3: They're number five.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Number six, Jacksonville Jaguars. um man i'm not sure i'm
- 29:43Speaker 2: not you're not a believer no i'm not convinced that
- 29:45Speaker 2: they're not number three three yeah i will.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Put them in front of buffalo i put them.
- 29:51Speaker 2: In front of a hundred percent yeah i i'm a
- 29:53Speaker 2: i'm a believer in jacksonville.
- 29:56Speaker 6: Me too yeah yeah but you said seattle's number three.
- 29:59Speaker 5: Right Seattle is three, Buffalo four.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I would swap Buffalo and Seattle.
- 30:06Speaker 6: I just covered the Pats-Bills game, and they got a
- 30:10Speaker 6: lot of questions to answer on defense, and they barely
- 30:12Speaker 6: got out of L.A.
- 30:13Speaker 3: The week before that.
- 30:14Speaker 5: L.A.
- 30:15Speaker 6: Was playing with their food against the Bills.
- 30:17Speaker 3: They could have beaten them.
- 30:19Speaker 6: But Jacksonville, Jacksonville is looking like a silent juggernaut.
- 30:24Speaker 3: They are beating people convincingly. It's not like, oh, my gosh.
- 30:27Speaker 3: We hope to do this. Travis Hunter had, what, two
- 30:29Speaker 3: interceptions in that game last week? Correct. Yep.
- 30:32Speaker 6: And then Parker Washington has just been on an absolute
- 30:34Speaker 6: tear as a number one receiver.
- 30:36Speaker 3: So, I mean, that's a squad.
- 30:38Speaker 6: Trevor Lawrence is starting to come up to Bill and
- 30:40Speaker 6: starting to look like the guy that they drafted number
- 30:42Speaker 6: one overall. So, I would definitely slot them in front
- 30:45Speaker 6: of Buffalo for sure. They're definitely a top four, top
- 30:47Speaker 6: five team.
- 30:48Speaker 2: So, as we're eyeing into the future, peering into the
- 30:50Speaker 2: future about our– we're all going to pick a team
- 30:53Speaker 2: that we think is underrated and overrated. We all think
- 30:55Speaker 2: Jacksonville is underrated at this point.
- 30:57Speaker 5: Correct. Oh, yeah. Yeah, we'll try to look for a
- 31:00Speaker 5: little differentiation. The Vikings, number seven. Four and 0.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Rock fight.
- 31:05Speaker 5: Four and 0.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Rock fight.
- 31:07Speaker 5: I know.
- 31:07Speaker 4: The Vikings go past the Dolphins.
- 31:11Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, Kyler Murray, that's a whole other show. Yeah.
- 31:21Speaker 3: But the defense, it's the defense. The defense is carrying.
- 31:24Speaker 4: It's also hypocritical of us as Steelers fans and people
- 31:27Speaker 4: who wore the black and gold when we watched our
- 31:30Speaker 4: defense carry the offense multiple times and hoist us to
- 31:33Speaker 4: victory to kind of throw rocks at the Vikings for
- 31:36Speaker 4: doing the same thing. I think the problem is I
- 31:40Speaker 4: think from a talent standpoint, you would assume the Vikings
- 31:43Speaker 4: have way more talent than the Steelers do, right? From
- 31:45Speaker 4: a roster standpoint, a better receiving core, I would attest to.
- 31:49Speaker 4: But when you look at what they're dealing with, they
- 31:51Speaker 4: have some serious injuries on the offensive line. Kyler Murray
- 31:56Speaker 4: doesn't look good, period. I'm going to stop it there.
- 31:58Speaker 4: And Justin Jefferson is struggling to find somebody who can
- 32:02Speaker 4: deliver the ball to him on time. But when you
- 32:05Speaker 4: stop the other team from scoring by blitzing.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Them 80% of the time.
- 32:11Speaker 4: And be effective at that, it's going to work. So
- 32:15Speaker 4: Brian Flores has those guys playing at a high level
- 32:18Speaker 4: on defense out there in Minnesota. The offense is still
- 32:21Speaker 4: trying to figure themselves out, but they're 4-0.
- 32:24Speaker 2: So that brings up an interesting point that I want
- 32:28Speaker 2: a quick aside here, and then we'll jump back into
- 32:31Speaker 2: the rankings. I always believe, I think that a team
- 32:36Speaker 2: that starts to believe is a dangerous team. And I
- 32:39Speaker 2: think a team that is starting to win is starting
- 32:42Speaker 2: to believe. Now, if you're the Vikings and you're starting
- 32:48Speaker 2: to believe, maybe there's a little nagging doubt in the
- 32:51Speaker 2: back of your mind, and then you get worked by
- 32:54Speaker 2: the Bears or something. I don't know what their upcoming
- 32:56Speaker 2: schedule is. I don't know who the.
- 32:57Speaker 5: Vikings have next. They have the Saints coming up next.
- 33:00Speaker 5: You know what I mean? I remember watching when the
- 33:02Speaker 5: Rams moved to St.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Louis.
- 33:09Speaker 5: And I think it was, yeah, it was the St.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Louis Rams, and they were still playing at Busch Stadium,
- 33:15Speaker 2: and they got off to a great start, they had
- 33:16Speaker 2: a new coach, and they started to get some belief.
- 33:19Speaker 2: They hadn't been very good, and then San Francisco came
- 33:22Speaker 2: in and just pounded them. I mean, obliterated them at
- 33:27Speaker 2: Busch Stadium, and there went the belief. It just leaked
- 33:30Speaker 2: out like air out of a balloon. So I understand
- 33:32Speaker 2: it's not, you know, things can happen, but I think
- 33:36Speaker 2: if the Vikings have another couple of wins.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Maybe they're going to start actually deserving that. Because I
- 33:43Speaker 2: think we all agree that that seems a little high,
- 33:46Speaker 2: even though they're 4-0. But they might start– you know
- 33:49Speaker 2: what I'm saying, guys? I mean, do you guys think
- 33:50Speaker 2: that belief matters?
- 33:54Speaker 3: Well, I think you can get fooled by that.
- 33:56Speaker 4: I think you can assume every time a team pops
- 33:59Speaker 4: up with a W on their schedule that they're a
- 34:01Speaker 4: team that's all in in belief. Sometimes– That's not necessarily
- 34:05Speaker 4: the case. The schedule may favor them. They may just
- 34:12Speaker 4: be the better outfit. When I think about a team
- 34:15Speaker 4: who believes, believe it or not, I think about the
- 34:18Speaker 4: bottom feeders. I think about teams like the Raiders. I
- 34:22Speaker 4: think about teams like the Dolphins. The Dolphins haven't won,
- 34:25Speaker 4: but if you watch them, you can see the bricks
- 34:28Speaker 4: being built.
- 34:29Speaker 3: You can see the guys.
- 34:32Speaker 4: who are now there, whether it's Chop Robinson or Rodriguez,
- 34:35Speaker 4: the linebacker who they just picked up in a draft,
- 34:38Speaker 4: who's playing out of his mind. Malik Willis is starting
- 34:41Speaker 4: to show signs that he can be a competent quarterback.
- 34:43Speaker 4: You start to see guys, despite the record, really give
- 34:47Speaker 4: an all-out effort and take teams to deep water, even
- 34:50Speaker 4: though they're not winning those games.
- 34:53Speaker 3: I think sometimes when you see a team.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Who is as efficient as the Rams or the Chiefs
- 34:58Speaker 4: or whoever. You feel like, oh, that team just– they
- 35:00Speaker 4: believe in who they are.
- 35:01Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, maybe.
- 35:03Speaker 4: I think they just– they are a product of the
- 35:06Speaker 4: system like the Niners are. But I look at teams
- 35:10Speaker 4: who are kind of middle of the pack and kind
- 35:14Speaker 4: of dwell at the bottom a little bit of how
- 35:15Speaker 4: their play style and how they finish games and how
- 35:17Speaker 4: they don't beat themselves and things like that. Those– because
- 35:22Speaker 4: you'll notice, Rob, too, when a team is– a team
- 35:25Speaker 4: that doesn't believe they pack it up early.
- 35:27Speaker 3: You can see it.
- 35:28Speaker 4: Missed tackles, penalties, arguing on the sideline.
- 35:32Speaker 3: Um, I'm not talking about the Steelers here, by the way.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Uh, it's, it's, it's, you can, you can start to see,
- 35:40Speaker 4: you start to see things, right?
- 35:42Speaker 3: You, you see, there's a disconnect.
- 35:44Speaker 4: Um, but with all that said, uh, The teams who
- 35:49Speaker 4: do believe, doesn't matter what the game looks like, there's
- 35:53Speaker 4: a community belief that they're going to figure it out somehow,
- 35:56Speaker 4: some way.
- 35:57Speaker 3: And usually they do. But even if they don't, you
- 35:59Speaker 3: can tell they put up a good fight.
- 36:02Speaker 2: All right, quickly through the top. No, we're going to
- 36:05Speaker 2: stop right there because we need to take a break.
- 36:08Speaker 2: And then we're going to dash through the rest of
- 36:09Speaker 2: these power rankings. Jim Wexler joining us next hour as well. Again,
- 36:13Speaker 2: any news, filters in from Steelers practice, we'll let you
- 36:15Speaker 2: know when we continue here in the locker room.
- 36:17Speaker 5: On the Steelers Audio Network.
- 36:26Speaker 1: This is In the Locker Room with Rob King, Max Starks,
- 36:30Speaker 1: and Willie Colon on Steelers Nation Radio. Brought to you
- 36:33Speaker 1: in part by the Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct
- 36:36Speaker 1: from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop.steelers.com.
- 36:41Speaker 1: And by your neighborhood Ford store. The F-150 is the
- 36:45Speaker 1: official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 36:50Speaker 2: And thanks for being back with us as we... go
- 36:53Speaker 2: through the power rankings around the NFL and the teams
- 36:55Speaker 2: that we like, don't like, think are overrated, think are underrated.
- 36:59Speaker 2: We are through the top seven, and we're going to
- 37:02Speaker 2: kind of get the– we also had a guess as
- 37:04Speaker 2: to where the Steelers were. I guessed 19, Max guessed 22,
- 37:08Speaker 2: Willie guessed 23 on the athletic power ranking. So, again,
- 37:12Speaker 2: San Francisco 1, Kansas City 2, Seattle 3, Buffalo 4,
- 37:17Speaker 2: the Rams 5, Jacksonville six. We all think they should
- 37:21Speaker 2: be a little higher. The Minnesota Vikings were all kind
- 37:23Speaker 2: of waiting for the pin to hit the balloon. Eight,
- 37:27Speaker 2: Chicago Bears. I am so wrong on the Bears that
- 37:32Speaker 2: I think that if they were five or six instead
- 37:37Speaker 2: of eight, that would not, I don't think that would
- 37:40Speaker 2: be a miss. Then it's the Broncos nine, the Ravens ten.
- 37:44Speaker 2: You guys want to chew on those three selections there?
- 37:49Speaker 3: Uh, no, I think they're fair.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Um, you know, I think the bears right now, I've
- 37:54Speaker 4: said this before, Ben Johnson has built an ecosystem. I
- 37:57Speaker 4: don't think there's a quarterback that can't play in his
- 37:59Speaker 4: offense and thrive. Um, I think he's proven that from
- 38:01Speaker 4: Caleb Williams, the agent to case kingdom, they've all had
- 38:05Speaker 4: a successful days in his offense. I think when it
- 38:08Speaker 4: comes down to the Ravens, the biggest question with them
- 38:10Speaker 4: is the health of Lamar Jackson, who's not dealing with
- 38:12Speaker 4: an ankle injury. Um, and so, uh, And they played
- 38:16Speaker 4: the Titans. I mean, so the Titans are honestly one
- 38:20Speaker 4: of the worst teams in the NFL.
- 38:23Speaker 3: So, yeah, I think that's a fair assessment. I don't
- 38:26Speaker 3: have any problem with those rankings.
- 38:28Speaker 5: Max?
- 38:29Speaker 6: Yeah, no, I mean, it's so Lamar Jackson heavy, and
- 38:33Speaker 6: obviously we'll see what the status is. I know the
- 38:35Speaker 6: report came out and said that, oh, you know, it's
- 38:38Speaker 6: not a long-term injury. Well, I mean, they're never long-term injuries.
- 38:42Speaker 6: you know, when the guy's the face of a franchise, right,
- 38:45Speaker 6: unless his leg.
- 38:46Speaker 3: Or his arm is dangling from his body.
- 38:49Speaker 6: But, I mean, it is significant that they are not
- 38:52Speaker 6: successful when he's not in that lineup. And with new
- 38:54Speaker 6: coach Jesse Minter, they haven't quite, you know, become that
- 38:57Speaker 6: stout defense that you're talking about. So I think there
- 39:00Speaker 6: could be a little fluff there, you know, with their ranking.
- 39:04Speaker 6: But as it stands right now, I mean, you can't
- 39:06Speaker 6: argue it. The result's the result. I mean, and like
- 39:09Speaker 6: you said, the Bears– I mean, I don't know what
- 39:12Speaker 6: the Bears are. I need to see the Bears, you know,
- 39:16Speaker 6: play a little bit more. But I am a believer
- 39:19Speaker 6: that Ben Johnson is a great coach. And they're playing,
- 39:22Speaker 6: I think, I think they're out kicking their coverage. I mean,
- 39:25Speaker 6: this is the first quarter of the season. I mean,
- 39:27Speaker 6: halfway point could be a completely different story.
- 39:29Speaker 3: But.
- 39:30Speaker 6: As it stands right now, I mean, I see no
- 39:31Speaker 6: problem with it.
- 39:32Speaker 3: It is what it is right now.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe I'm overcompensating for being so wrong about them.
- 39:39Speaker 2: I really thought they were one of the candidates to
- 39:41Speaker 2: come back to Earth. There's always a team or two
- 39:42Speaker 2: that comes back to Earth. Maybe that team's number 11,
- 39:45Speaker 2: the New England Patriots, but they just jumped up from
- 39:48Speaker 2: 16 to 11 with their victory over the bills. They're
- 39:52Speaker 2: followed by another two and two team, the Detroit lions.
- 39:55Speaker 2: And then I'm going to call them Willie Cologne's Las
- 39:59Speaker 2: Vegas Raiders who went from 12 to 13 after a
- 40:04Speaker 2: field goal loss to the chiefs.
- 40:05Speaker 5: I mean, they were right there with the chiefs.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Oh man.
- 40:09Speaker 4: And then, you know, listen, they didn't, they didn't particularly
- 40:11Speaker 4: run the ball really well. Just Kurt Cousins playing out
- 40:14Speaker 4: of the skull and the defense really backing them up. They,
- 40:17Speaker 4: I mean, Brock Bowers was dealing with a flu, and
- 40:20Speaker 4: he had a decent game. So, yeah, the Raiders– I'm just– man,
- 40:26Speaker 4: I'm just a fan of a team that says enough
- 40:28Speaker 4: is enough. You know, I'm just a fan of an
- 40:31Speaker 4: organization who finally gets it right.
- 40:34Speaker 3: Like, enough is enough.
- 40:34Speaker 4: Like, we're going to spend time– let's spend our time winning,
- 40:37Speaker 4: not losing all the damn time.
- 40:40Speaker 3: And so, when you– the Raiders are fun to watch.
- 40:42Speaker 4: They got a bunch of guys who– You know, Cody White,
- 40:45Speaker 4: the guy who came off the bench, continues.
- 40:46Speaker 3: To thrive and score touchdowns.
- 40:49Speaker 4: Brock Bowers and Michael Myers are two tight end combinations, really,
- 40:53Speaker 4: really good. And Kirk Cousins, man, you can't say enough about,
- 40:58Speaker 4: you know, is he worthy? Let me ask you this, Rob.
- 41:00Speaker 4: Is he worthy of being in the comeback conversation?
- 41:05Speaker 3: Absolutely. Of the comeback play of the year?
- 41:08Speaker 5: No doubt.
- 41:09Speaker 3: Yes.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, what he is doing. is, frankly, nothing
- 41:15Speaker 2: short of remarkable. I mean, look, I think for most
- 41:19Speaker 2: fans in the NFL, myself probably included, you know, Kirk
- 41:25Speaker 2: Cousins didn't really work out in Atlanta that.
- 41:27Speaker 5: Well the last couple years. Just like, meh, you know.
- 41:30Speaker 2: Okay, so, okay, old man, you know, play your four
- 41:35Speaker 2: games and then get out of the way so we
- 41:37Speaker 2: can see Mendoza. I think that's what fans were thinking.
- 41:39Speaker 2: That's what I was thinking. He has been tremendous.
- 41:43Speaker 3: Tremendous, man.
- 41:44Speaker 5: They are 3-1.
- 41:45Speaker 2: And their loss is a three-point loss to the Raiders.
- 41:50Speaker 2: I mean, to the Chiefs.
- 41:52Speaker 3: And to your point, Rob, they're spooky good, right?
- 41:55Speaker 4: Like, this is a team that you kind of like, man,
- 41:58Speaker 4: we'll bring our flip-flops to the game because we know
- 42:01Speaker 4: we're about to roll these dudes. Now, you got to
- 42:03Speaker 4: bring your hard-toe boots because they're going to play you
- 42:06Speaker 4: for fourth quarter.
- 42:06Speaker 3: So, yeah.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Man, I just like it, man. I just like their story.
- 42:11Speaker 4: I like Kubiak and his system, and I like the
- 42:14Speaker 4: defense and everything that happened with Max Crosby in the offseason.
- 42:17Speaker 4: And even up into the season, there were still rumors
- 42:20Speaker 4: laying around that he still might get traded. And when
- 42:23Speaker 4: you see this defense play together, they're not the best,
- 42:26Speaker 4: but they'll put their foot in the middle.
- 42:29Speaker 3: Of the ring and bang it out with you.
- 42:30Speaker 4: So they're fun to watch. So I'm a pseudo Raiders fan.
- 42:37Speaker 5: By the way, you know the.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Game, because we're all going to pick our game of
- 42:45Speaker 2: the week, right?
- 42:47Speaker 3: Okay.
- 42:49Speaker 5: That comes up on Friday, right?
- 42:51Speaker 2: And so earlier in the year, these guys were laughing
- 42:54Speaker 2: at me because I had the Patriots, and then the Patriots,
- 42:56Speaker 2: somebody killed them.
- 42:57Speaker 5: I can't remember who it was. It was Jacksonville.
- 43:00Speaker 3: No, it was Jacksonville. It was Jacksonville two weeks ago.
- 43:03Speaker 2: So I don't mind telling you because– We're 974 miles
- 43:08Speaker 2: removed from Pittsburgh.
- 43:10Speaker 5: To Jackson, Mississippi. By the way, I looked it up. Okay.
- 43:17Speaker 2: When Willie said, I'm really looking forward to the Raiders game,
- 43:21Speaker 2: after these guys, after my friends were giving me the business,
- 43:25Speaker 2: I rolled my eyes.
- 43:26Speaker 5: Willie, I'm 974 miles away. I rolled my eyes. But
- 43:30Speaker 5: now I'm like, hey, man. Come Friday, I might be
- 43:33Speaker 5: jumping on that as my game of the week. The
- 43:35Speaker 5: Raiders and the Patriots. Yeah.
- 43:38Speaker 4: And Drake may play better in the second half. He
- 43:41Speaker 4: just got off in the first half. But he was
- 43:43Speaker 4: better in the second half. I think he put it
- 43:47Speaker 4: together and willed his team to victory.
- 43:50Speaker 3: So, yeah. I mean, Pats, Raiders, it could be a
- 43:54Speaker 3: backyard scrap. I'm with it.
- 43:56Speaker 5: So, I'm going to go early.
- 44:02Speaker 2: Foot down it's kind of a tentative foot down like
- 44:05Speaker 2: I'm kind of tapping it like is that ground hot
- 44:07Speaker 2: or not I'm not real I'm not overly on board
- 44:11Speaker 2: with this and I'm not going to pick 19 teams
- 44:15Speaker 2: but I might my early my team that might be
- 44:18Speaker 2: overrated might be the Lions are at 12 maybe they're
- 44:23Speaker 2: just maybe they're just a team that got there and
- 44:27Speaker 2: got close and now they're on the downslides You know,
- 44:31Speaker 2: they're sliding now. There's a bunch of 2-2 teams, and
- 44:36Speaker 2: to see them at 12, I'm going to go right now,
- 44:40Speaker 2: early call, as the Lions are my overrated team in
- 44:43Speaker 2: the NFL at number 12.
- 44:46Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, Rob, I can't disagree with that because
- 44:51Speaker 4: watching the Lions feels like the feeling I got when
- 44:53Speaker 4: I watched Ronald Isley performed on stage a couple of
- 44:57Speaker 4: months ago.
- 44:58Speaker 3: It was hard to watch, right?
- 45:00Speaker 4: Like, the hits were the hits, but watching him sit
- 45:03Speaker 4: there on stage and, you know, pretty much people had
- 45:06Speaker 4: to kind of, you know, fish the words out of
- 45:09Speaker 4: his mouth.
- 45:09Speaker 3: It was rough.
- 45:10Speaker 4: And I think that's how I perceive the lambs.
- 45:13Speaker 3: The lambs. The lions. The lions right now.
- 45:16Speaker 5: They are lambs. No, you got it right.
- 45:17Speaker 3: You got it right.
- 45:18Speaker 5: Oh, man.
- 45:19Speaker 6: That's a great Freudian slip.
- 45:21Speaker 5: I love it.
- 45:21Speaker 3: By the way.
- 45:23Speaker 5: When Lions turned to Lions. Isley Brothers? Isley from the
- 45:26Speaker 5: Isley Brothers.
- 45:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:27Speaker 5: Mr.
- 45:28Speaker 4: Big.
- 45:29Speaker 5: Mr.
- 45:29Speaker 6: Big.
- 45:29Speaker 4: Mr.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Big, Ronald Isley, yeah. I saw him perform a couple
- 45:32Speaker 3: months ago, and he, you know, it's funny. You know
- 45:35Speaker 3: the songs, but.
- 45:36Speaker 4: It's like it's hard to kind of like, you know,
- 45:37Speaker 4: he's old. He's getting up there in age. No disrespect
- 45:40Speaker 4: to the man, but, you know, at some point you
- 45:43Speaker 4: got to stop performing.
- 45:44Speaker 3: But it is what it is.
- 45:45Speaker 4: With the Lions right now, you watch them, you know, offensively, sure,
- 45:50Speaker 4: they can score and they can do things, but defensively,
- 45:53Speaker 4: they can't stop anybody. I mean, that game against Carolina,
- 45:56Speaker 4: you know, Bryce Young and what's the name, the young
- 46:01Speaker 4: receiver from Arizona.
- 46:02Speaker 3: Oh, Ted McMillan. Ted McMillan, right.
- 46:05Speaker 4: Like, the offensive line, defensively, they look solid, man, and,
- 46:09Speaker 4: you know, and that was, the Panthers.
- 46:11Speaker 3: Had a lot of key injuries as well, but.
- 46:15Speaker 4: When you watch a team's window close in real time,
- 46:18Speaker 4: all you can do is just sit there and just say,
- 46:19Speaker 4: you know what, it was fun while it lasted because
- 46:21Speaker 4: that's how I feel when I watch the Lions.
- 46:24Speaker 3: It was great for a period of time, but now you.
- 46:26Speaker 4: Have to seriously start thinking about blowing this thing up
- 46:29Speaker 4: just so you can stay apart, stay afloat, because the
- 46:33Speaker 4: rest of their division is getting better. The Vikings are
- 46:35Speaker 4: getting better. The Packers will get better. The Bears are
- 46:38Speaker 4: obviously getting better. So if you're the Lions right now,
- 46:42Speaker 4: you've lost your fear factor. And we witnessed this Sunday
- 46:45Speaker 4: night against the Panthers. And no disrespect to the Panthers,
- 46:47Speaker 4: who I think will win the division or will at
- 46:50Speaker 4: least battle between the.
- 46:51Speaker 3: Saints and the Falcons.
- 46:53Speaker 4: But overall, man, you know, when the Lions rolled into town,
- 46:56Speaker 4: you say, oh, this can get.
- 46:57Speaker 3: Out of hand fast.
- 46:58Speaker 4: I don't think you feel that way anymore about the Lions.
- 47:02Speaker 4: And I think a lot has to do with how
- 47:04Speaker 4: bad the defense is and the fact that the offense.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Valet, can put up points.
- 47:07Speaker 4: It comes with a Herculean effort week after week.
- 47:10Speaker 2: Okay, so we are through 13 teams in the power rankings.
- 47:13Speaker 2: We have not yet arrived in the Steelers, not that
- 47:15Speaker 2: we expected to. We are going to let you know
- 47:18Speaker 2: where they rank. We'll take a look at the rest
- 47:19Speaker 2: of the team's rankings. Jim Wexel is going to be
- 47:22Speaker 2: joining us as well. We continue in the locker room
- 47:24Speaker 2: here in the Steelers.
