- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, welcome back the live audience, still eating pizza and
- 0:04Speaker 1: Sharon beverages with the coach, Jason Kandell. We we got
- 0:07Speaker 1: a roster full of players. Most of the folks here
- 0:10Speaker 1: remember you know a good year this team had last year,
- 0:14Speaker 1: People like Skyler Bell, I mean, coach. The numbers were impressive.
- 0:17Speaker 1: E twelve hundred and forty yards receiving. He's now with
- 0:20Speaker 1: the in the NFL. Joe Fignano the quarterback, sixty nine
- 0:24Speaker 1: percent completions, twenty eight tds, one interception, Cam Edwards a
- 0:29Speaker 1: running back over twenty six hundred yards in three years.
- 0:33Speaker 1: So my understanding, and you're going to explain this to
- 0:36Speaker 1: me now, is when you get a roster together, you
- 0:40Speaker 1: need to have depth. It's football. People get banged up,
- 0:43Speaker 1: they get hurt, they can't play. As you started to
- 0:46Speaker 1: put this roster together, is that what you were thinking.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I need two or three running backs. I need wide
- 0:51Speaker 1: outs that can give us, you know, several reps during
- 0:55Speaker 1: a game and on every position in football.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Isn't that part of it? Read that quarterback stats again,
- 1:01Speaker 2: it's ridiculous.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Twenty eight and one, twenty eight touchdowns, one interception.
- 1:05Speaker 3: That's playing high level football. Right there, and he's doing
- 1:10Speaker 3: it right now in the preseason too. So I mean
- 1:12Speaker 3: all those guys you mentioned, I think you know, those
- 1:14Speaker 3: guys are tremendous players, and you you want to put
- 1:17Speaker 3: together a team that has you know, highlighted guys, and
- 1:20Speaker 3: you want to have top flight players at every position.
- 1:22Speaker 3: But you're right, you know the depth and is critical,
- 1:26Speaker 3: you know, And I think number one, yeah, you you
- 1:29Speaker 3: want to have a backup player, but you really want
- 1:31Speaker 3: to have great competition in those meeting rooms and you know,
- 1:34Speaker 3: the intercompetition within your organization and your team just to
- 1:37Speaker 3: get better as a as an individual player. You you
- 1:41Speaker 3: know that the Cooper Flag kid got drafted and he said,
- 1:44Speaker 3: you know, in the NBA draft. I remember his quote
- 1:45Speaker 3: was like his mom told him like, if you're the
- 1:47Speaker 3: best player in the gym, you're in the wrong gym, right.
- 1:49Speaker 2: So if you if you.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Go to practice every day and it's really easy for
- 1:52Speaker 3: you at football practice, and we probably don't have a
- 1:55Speaker 3: very good team, right, So you know, you want to
- 1:57Speaker 3: be very competitive. You want to put as many good
- 1:58Speaker 3: players in those rooms as you can, and you know, whoever,
- 2:02Speaker 3: you know, fights their way out of that. Ultimately, he
- 2:04Speaker 3: is gonna, you know, get the most reps, but you
- 2:06Speaker 3: want to be you want to be at full strength
- 2:08Speaker 3: because this is not this is a there's a kicking
- 2:11Speaker 3: element to this, there's a special teams element to this.
- 2:13Speaker 3: There's a lot of different things and a lot of
- 2:15Speaker 3: different ways you can impact the game in today's game.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Let's talk about some individuals. Let's begin with Kveon Sherman.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Where's number zero. He's a senior linebacker. Came from Toledo
- 2:27Speaker 1: six three two forty, so you know him. Well, how
- 2:30Speaker 1: would you describe him to our fans here that never
- 2:33Speaker 1: saw him play football?
- 2:34Speaker 3: Well, if I'm a traditionalist football guy, you're this is
- 2:37Speaker 3: right up your ally. This guy's gonna gonna give you
- 2:39Speaker 3: a headache out there. I mean, he's gonna hit you
- 2:41Speaker 3: the entire game. This is not a finesse. You know,
- 2:45Speaker 3: wear a long towel, cover you in the flat, and
- 2:48Speaker 3: you know, celebrate all the time. This guy's gonna he's
- 2:50Speaker 3: gonna strap it up and go hit you. So I
- 2:53Speaker 3: think there's a physical element to that, and I think
- 2:55Speaker 3: that's a tone center for you know, everybody else when
- 2:57Speaker 3: it comes to what practice looks like and what game
- 2:59Speaker 3: day is gonna look like that kind of thing. And
- 3:01Speaker 3: you know, he came to us from junior college to
- 3:03Speaker 3: Toledo and you know, he you know, kind of made
- 3:06Speaker 3: his way. You know, just started off very very productive
- 3:09Speaker 3: on special teams and it had an amazing season last year,
- 3:12Speaker 3: and then I think it's prime to have a great
- 3:14Speaker 3: senior season.
- 3:16Speaker 2: How about is Sean Carter.
- 3:18Speaker 1: He is a fifty year guy, defensive tackle, six three,
- 3:22Speaker 1: ninety two, Detroit guy, Toledo guy too. I've never seen
- 3:27Speaker 1: him play in a game.
- 3:28Speaker 3: You have, very physical with the point of attack, a
- 3:32Speaker 3: guy that can you know, play in multiple schemes. He
- 3:34Speaker 3: could play in a two gap system or hold his
- 3:36Speaker 3: you know, sit in there and anchor in there and
- 3:38Speaker 3: hold his gap. And you know, and I think when
- 3:40Speaker 3: you have really good athletic linebacker play, you know, those
- 3:44Speaker 3: guys tests at the table for the whole thing. So
- 3:46Speaker 3: I think you're gonna see a style of defense where
- 3:48Speaker 3: they're more up the field and they're more aggressive this
- 3:50Speaker 3: year than maybe, you know, we we were last year
- 3:52Speaker 3: at Toledo. So I'd say his production is probably gonna
- 3:56Speaker 3: is going to go way up from a you know,
- 3:57Speaker 3: tackles for loss and a sack you know, stam point
- 4:00Speaker 3: of things. But an All League player last year for us,
- 4:02Speaker 3: A great kid, you know, just one of those guys
- 4:05Speaker 3: that does does all the right stuff and when he
- 4:08Speaker 3: gets out there on Saturday, he makes his presence.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Felt, are we going to see three down linemen for
- 4:13Speaker 1: the most part? Are you gonna mix and match?
- 4:15Speaker 2: What are you going? Four down? Four down? Okay?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Renique Doriles, He's a guy that came from Rutgers sophomore dB.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Sometimes those guys are hard to hard to really figure
- 4:28Speaker 1: when they're moving from one place to another.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Are they going to fit in with you? What's he
- 4:32Speaker 2: been like? Well?
- 4:34Speaker 3: I mean, I think coming from what we just what
- 4:37Speaker 3: we just left at Toledo, we left a secondary then
- 4:40Speaker 3: in two years, three draft picks and six total pros. Right, So,
- 4:47Speaker 3: fair or unfair, whatever guy comes into playing this secondary
- 4:52Speaker 3: is being held under a microscope and a different light.
- 4:55Speaker 3: So and I say that just to say that these
- 5:00Speaker 3: guys that are in the secondary have done a great job.
- 5:02Speaker 2: They really have.
- 5:03Speaker 3: And it's a high standard because I think for us,
- 5:06Speaker 3: if you can't cover, you can't win, and you know,
- 5:08Speaker 3: the D line can't do what they need to do.
- 5:10Speaker 3: If you can't cover, you know, there's no you can
- 5:12Speaker 3: blitz all day and you can do all those things,
- 5:14Speaker 3: but if you can't cover, it's going to be a
- 5:15Speaker 3: long afternoon. So today's game is much different than what
- 5:18Speaker 3: it was twenty years ago. As everybody knows, this is
- 5:20Speaker 3: a you know, fifty three and a third. They're stretching
- 5:23Speaker 3: the field sideways, they're stretching the field vertically. You gotta
- 5:27Speaker 3: have great cover guys, and you got to have guys
- 5:28Speaker 3: that are attention to detail. And you know, Renie's been
- 5:31Speaker 3: really good. You know, he's coming in here with a
- 5:33Speaker 3: great mindset and a great attitude to go compete, and he,
- 5:37Speaker 3: like a lot of other guys are you know, are
- 5:39Speaker 3: fighting for you know, what they think is theirs and
- 5:42Speaker 3: that's to be the number one cover guy.
- 5:43Speaker 2: More man to man or zone defense back there.
- 5:46Speaker 3: I think it'll be a multitude of things, really. I
- 5:48Speaker 3: mean I think that you know, you you know, you
- 5:52Speaker 3: match a lot of routes. So in theory, you're playing
- 5:55Speaker 3: a lot of man. But if you can't in today's football,
- 5:57Speaker 3: if you can't play any man, it's going to be
- 5:58Speaker 3: a long afternoon.
- 5:59Speaker 2: You have to be able to man. There's a lot
- 6:01Speaker 2: of gaps in those Zons, all right.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Coach Jason Campbell back with us at a moment, we're
- 6:05Speaker 1: gonna get to the offense. This is the Yukon Football
- 6:08Speaker 1: Coaches Show on the Yukon Sports Network.
