Transcript
- 0:39Welcome back to answer with a blunt penknife the Doctor Who
- 0:43commentary podcast. It's quite refreshing to say
- 0:46that, after all these hammers director has not been doing.
- 0:48Yeah, this is a very special recording today.
- 0:53Are, why is that Nathan? Because, although, it turns out
- 1:00of the last few days, we've recorded quite a lot of
- 1:02podcasts. This is actually our first
- 1:05hamster, Main Range podcast that we've ever recorded together in
- 1:09With basically, ditched off Doctor Who now?
- 1:11We talk about other things. Yeah.
- 1:13That's that's, that's what made us, you know.
- 1:15Yeah, I know. Today we are talking about, I
- 1:20think is underrated. I think it's underrated to make
- 1:23loss. Yeah.
- 1:26And we'll talk about what who a lot seventh season 18 J&T lot of
- 1:32wolfensberger all adds up. But before we get into that, I
- 1:35want to ask you a question, okay?
- 1:37And I know it's okay. Occasionally sort of how you
- 1:41throw out things outside of Doctor Who, hmm.
- 1:43He can to Doctor Who won't ask a correction directly.
- 1:47And that is what the hell does podcasting mean to you and how
- 1:52has podcasting change your life. Um, so I was invited on flights,
- 1:57are entirety back in like 20 40 so I invited her well known and
- 2:06so it's it's invited me. On and we just sort of sit
- 2:12around a table and talked about the pilot episode.
- 2:14Like I think the original plan was to watch a season and then
- 2:18do an episode on it. So we're going to have 26
- 2:21episodes of the show. Now we're 253 episode being 253.
- 2:26Yeah how long is a and run time so it's something like nine or
- 2:30ten days continuously there's quite a lot of crap that people
- 2:35can spend an entire week the way to you.
- 2:37Yeah yeah sleep provided they don't know.
- 2:39Detour and and it never occurred to us.
- 2:45I don't think it occurred to any of us.
- 2:47That anyone would really listen to it.
- 2:50And since that time it seems like a, it seems ridiculous to
- 2:54think that sitting down in front of a microphone and talking
- 2:58about the Doctor Who pilot would change your life.
- 3:02But it's like a it's like, you know, it's taking a job or
- 3:09Having a first date level of importance when it comes to how
- 3:15my life has changed. And so, you know, I I met, I've
- 3:20met so many people as a result. Hello, hey.
- 3:27And like, just wonderful people as well.
- 3:29I remember the first time we were like, um Steven B who's B
- 3:34normal person who's absolutely superb.
- 3:37He got in touch with this, he was the first person ever to get
- 3:39in. Touch with us and say, do you on
- 3:40who actually met dark and it was kind of like what's I mean I
- 3:44know I'm some people person people who listen to a doctor
- 3:47who bagas but I was going to what someone who listens to talk
- 3:50to. But yeah, and person I've met
- 3:54through. It has been, you know, charming
- 3:57and funny and just wonderful. And what's a joy as either while
- 4:02they've got this sort of knit that all these opinions.
- 4:04Like I don't know why I'm ready to sort of come out.
- 4:07Yeah. So yeah.
- 4:08So it's Early life changing experience like agreeing to go
- 4:13on a first date with Calvin or you know, taking my current job
- 4:18which I had been doing since 1994 in 2014 is an absolute kind
- 4:23of it's a ceased sliding doors. Well yeah, or it's a fixed point
- 4:27in time, you know, like I was always going to sort of take
- 4:30that and it really has changed my life and even even to the
- 4:35people in Australia who I knew and was friends with with
- 4:39working on a long-term project together means that we see.
- 4:43What means that we see one another all the time and that
- 4:46we've become closer as well. So it's literally, yeah.
- 4:51Life-changing, if you do hear any Drilling and the background
- 4:55is the renovations that have been occurring for the last six
- 4:57months in my neighbor's help. You know, that's what I just
- 5:00hear this time a little bit and it's true and like, you know,
- 5:04you would be here today. No, Abby, we please Focus right
- 5:07now. Yeah.
- 5:09So I mean, you heard about me through flight, in flight
- 5:13through entire and he and then I heard from you, it was the first
- 5:17of October maybe the 2nd of October my time 2020, I remember
- 5:25saying to somebody what I started listening to podcasts
- 5:28was to fly for entirety into R2 and heard of that it was your
- 5:34voice and it was marks voice. And I said yeah.
- 5:40One day I'm going to talk to Nathan Boston and I would have
- 5:43talked to Mark Rawlins, how that endowment?
- 5:48Pretty good landed up with her boyfriend, an internal husband.
- 5:50Yeah. And it also does mean that we
- 6:00get to talk about insane pieces of ephemera like in May gloss.
- 6:05Yeah, yeah and re-evaluate that one.
- 6:09You said to me, that sort of the joy of my podcast is that if
- 6:14there is somebody who loves everything.
- 6:16Yeah. So you've got that person who
- 6:18had or space museum. It hasn't been easy.
- 6:20It's really good. So time monster.
- 6:22That's great too. We had a pretty major and yeah,
- 6:25big loss. So do you remember first
- 6:29watching this? Yeah so in Australia they held
- 6:34back season 18 until season 19 was ready because they wanted to
- 6:39Because we used to get it like five nights a week or four
- 6:42nights a week and so they would burn through a whole season
- 6:44about five weeks. And so we would just have lots
- 6:47and lots of repeat and Tom had been the doctor forever and we'd
- 6:50seen all of his stories over and over again.
- 6:53And Iran would literally be bribing Australia's to send you
- 6:58out of pahs. Please send these back to where
- 7:04I came from in the first place. So I remember I remember Return
- 7:09to watch season 18. So I think the first actual
- 7:15thing that I watched, It's either 15 or 16 screen for the
- 7:21first time on Australian TV. And so I was aware that I was
- 7:25sitting down for a new season and I sat down and I saw the
- 7:30opening credits, to Leisure Hive part 1 and thought.
- 7:33This must be an ad for dr. Vincent, this is a doctor who is
- 7:38not the house. Star we used to know and I
- 7:42remember being absolutely flawed by the Leisure Hive and I think,
- 7:46you know, Sy heart and I agree that that's one of the greatest
- 7:51stories in classic Doctor Who but there's a whole new look for
- 7:55this season and I think even though it's not as visually
- 8:00stylish as The Ledger Hive because nearly nothing is not
- 8:03until Tiffany. Karan comes along.
- 8:05I think in the new series this is still the new look and I see
- 8:09Deal. Think there are ya ambitious
- 8:12interesting visual things that this star way and I've watched
- 8:15some sort of special features in the last couple of days.
- 8:17I've been sort of Blown Away by how colorful costuming as the
- 8:21lighting is pretty good in this and it's you know and this is a
- 8:25question that we've been also. I won't ask this to you now.
- 8:29Oh I kind of think Tara's Dudley might be a better director than
- 8:32he is ricer but yeah maybe that's true laughing.
- 8:36That's some tough moments in this short, you know, runs
- 8:39class. Like Doctor.
- 8:39Who's? Yeah, of course.
- 8:42Do you think this is the most dramatic change in style and
- 8:47tone holes on I-12 the Leisure? Hi, I think there's a couple of
- 8:53contenders, I think you've obviously got, like War Games to
- 8:55spare, as we can from space. Also, like, Dragonfire to
- 8:58remembrance, I think, massive shift.
- 9:01It is kind of a massive shift, but I think that's in sort of
- 9:03level of skill because they're still producing the same kind of
- 9:06show. And I don't know, Julie, I don't
- 9:08think the look is White as different.
- 9:11I mean Meg loss is perhaps most like the most like a series 70,
- 9:17the sure. Yeah, a lot of this is plate for
- 9:19Laughs. Yeah, a little great way but
- 9:23just the the you know, they're super Keen to make it
- 9:27televisual. I think that what John
- 9:30nathan-turner does when he comes along and it's super evident in
- 9:35the Leisure Hive is it's not just a play that we're going.
- 9:39To point cameras at it's a televisual experience, and the
- 9:43kinds of special effects that we see here aren't film affects
- 9:48their TV, special effects, that could only be done on TV.
- 9:52But as good as they can do at the time with the, yeah, they've
- 9:55got like, he's, he says about the sort of late, Greg Williams
- 9:58era, there was a sort of that'll do that'll shoot.
- 10:02Yeah, we're not doing that anymore.
- 10:03We're going to, you know, and you know later in the season,
- 10:06when you get like the location working full circle image, In
- 10:09war is gay. The what signs?
- 10:11Innkeeper a track in the direction.
- 10:13The got peleus. Like he's really like he wants
- 10:16to make his Mark with this is and I think he's got Chris
- 10:20wragge did meet, who is a fine scripted as learn and Barry
- 10:24Letts looking over. His shoulder who, you know, he
- 10:27knows what he's doing, he didn't leave the five years.
- 10:30I think we do lose a bit of it in 1900.
- 10:32We had that sort of, I don't know, it's the confidence if
- 10:35it's the style. Yeah.
- 10:37It's it's like, oh, yeah. Well, That's it.
- 10:39We've made our Mark. Yeah.
- 10:41And it out a bit. I don't think that Susan. 19 is
- 10:44just R. This is the new style but we've
- 10:46seen it before I think it is a step down.
- 10:49I think there's a bit less care. Yeah, exhibited in it and I also
- 10:53think that Christopher h b Meade, who is Patron?
- 10:56Saint of fly through entirety. It is he the only production
- 11:03member of Doctor Who you managed to insult, pretty much
- 11:06wonderful, I think. And But season 18 is perhaps my
- 11:14favorite season of classic old and he's certainly up there and
- 11:18I think you know love the way of something I love the William
- 11:22stuff enormously and I love the McCoy era.
- 11:25But what this does Simon, this is 74 part stories.
- 11:28So it's big and there's a thematic Unity.
- 11:32Do it shorter and you know that it's structured.
- 11:35Yeah. Apart from maybe the kiss I was
- 11:38very young Loosely structured. Yeah, much more than key to
- 11:41time. This is this is the thing I was,
- 11:43it is like the closest you get to a new series.
- 11:46Yeah. And that there are things
- 11:47dropped CDs and things like that.
- 11:49That are absolutely picked up ahead on the gospel.
- 11:52Yeah. And and, you know, in in the
- 11:58like the Hinchcliffe here, you would have an adventure and then
- 12:01you would never mention it again and you didn't get a sense that
- 12:06These were people having a continuous experience, whereas
- 12:10this season is definitely that and I think that that's the
- 12:14first time that we've had that since the 60s, really.
- 12:18I think the 60s does that a little bit, doesn't it?
- 12:20I think it's well done here as well.
- 12:22I like the segues between the so now we've dropped off our
- 12:25friends. Yeah.
- 12:26It's not like you know Daleks I thought we'd would done those
- 12:30menu tasty bits. Civil War, was it?
- 12:37Well, you were enjoying 48 Hours.
- 12:39Deep sleep in the Delta wave augmenter.
- 12:42My mind was possessed occupy, its say that long, but so it's
- 12:49well-written. The dialogue is kind of funny.
- 12:52Like it made doesn't seem like a funny guy but he does write some
- 12:57funny dialogue, arrest a scarf then.
- 12:59Yeah, I like that trick but but it's just the And I think too,
- 13:09you know, the first few, so we have lots of scientists this
- 13:14season. So letter Hive, is all about a
- 13:16scientific experiment or a scientific great Auto.
- 13:19Yeah. And hardened, you know, we get
- 13:22an actual scientist trying to get funding and stuff.
- 13:25So, like real life science have a race of scientists.
- 13:27And this is a race of scientists.
- 13:29In this, we have scientists in State of.
- 13:32Decay course, we have it. Yeah, yeah, we have Dex.
- 13:36In full circle like this. Sign is all the way through and
- 13:41so making it a science fiction show.
- 13:44I think is kind of an interesting thing to do doc.
- 13:47Oh so it's like I feel like big need is more interested in
- 13:52exploring a scientific idea than he is in plotting a story.
- 13:56Well yeah but but also the thing is too and when bid me talks
- 14:00about what he does in season 18, he's a terrible critic and he a
- 14:05particularly terrible. Critic of his own work, I'll
- 14:07sure because he also brings magic back to the show in a very
- 14:11literal sense. But he does sling, everything he
- 14:13ever did was scientifically marvelous.
- 14:16Yeah, well, but he's literally, self-congratulatory, I know, I
- 14:20know it is good. It is good.
- 14:22And like it certainly, you know, until the McCoy, or this is the
- 14:26best riding of the 1980s with that question.
- 14:29So, I love this season and I remember, for some reason I was
- 14:33staying at my grandmother's house and I had A gloss on tape
- 14:38and I just remember watching and watching it over and over again.
- 14:42Yeah yeah. Essentially saying free Eric's a
- 14:46wood and post. Eric say yes that's where the
- 14:4980s works. That's right.
- 14:50The residence. I know some members of
- 14:52fluttering targeted it would disagree with you on that you
- 14:54know but they were all a bit because these episodes are so
- 15:02sure. I know I think F so one comes in
- 15:04at 25 minutes but So Force only doesn't know the reprises about
- 15:09five minutes long. Yeah yeah it's the shortest for
- 15:12powder in Doctor Who history. Why love about Meg loss
- 15:15especially now in register. I think this used to be my least
- 15:17favorite of the year. That's understand.
- 15:19Don't think it is. Any more?
- 15:23I think there's a hive might be my least favorite of the year.
- 15:27I think it's brilliantly directed but I do think it's
- 15:29actually in Cory cold and you know I've said it before but I
- 15:33don't really lean towards what very serious Doctor Who know.
- 15:36Is really fun with insanely grotesque and others weird
- 15:42imagery. The captain of the Marcus go
- 15:44Eli. Yes.
- 15:45Such a brilliant idea. You know, a terrible alien
- 15:49jungle with enormous roses that come down and attack.
- 15:52People is Mad Doctor Who that's sort of nightmare of Eden style.
- 15:56Is that it's nice that there's a space for that, you know?
- 15:59Like, yeah, you got some very serious scientific, very
- 16:01intelligent Tails here, and you've got big loss.
- 16:06Yeah. Well, shall we?
- 16:07I think we should be quite honest.
- 16:09I didn't see the mouse is near to you, you know.
- 16:11I only time I ever get to say this to you.
- 16:13Yeah, yeah. Alright.
- 16:14So I'm going to count to see in 5, 4, 3, 2 1, and we're off.
- 16:22So when that title sequence exploded on your screen I
- 16:25thought it was an ad. Yeah.
- 16:36Usually, it looks so different about opening scene of the
- 16:42Leisure Hive on Brighton Beach. Anime music.
- 16:46That's the other thing too that doesn't get.
- 16:48Sufficiently emphasized. Is we get rid of Dudley who you
- 16:54know, we all love and I even love later Lee.
- 16:56I think some of his latest scores like oh yeah yeah yeah
- 17:00but here we are but Patti Kingsland and Peter Howell are
- 17:05so Oh great. And it like the Peterhouse
- 17:08quarter letter Hive, it's virtually at like a soundscape
- 17:11but she sort of wall-to-wall thing.
- 17:13It doesn't really relent does it all.
- 17:17But you know, I actually think some of the best music in.
- 17:20I can never quite figure out because episode 1 and 2 to 4 or
- 17:242 different opposes. He's most okay yeah I think
- 17:27these music and episode 1 is the best of this.
- 17:31I was just playing the soundtrack.
- 17:32Oh yeah I thought we started this like it.
- 17:36Is memorable music as I think, as we sort of go into the it we
- 17:40lose it comes in, is it? I think it's it must be hell in
- 17:43episode 1, Petty Kings. And I've got a lot of later 80s.
- 17:48Kind of like what is that? Dreadful dirge that you hit.
- 17:54But but the thing like eyes just love Petty Kings.
- 17:58And because he does The Hitchhiker's radio series and
- 18:01the music he does for undyed and Jones's narration.
- 18:05He's always. Hello.
- 18:06Variously Shyamalan. Yeah, he does.
- 18:09Yeah, it's really good. So we've seen the fourth doctor
- 18:13and Romana and canine canine as ever in season 18 is having a
- 18:17bit of a bad time. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:19Well, he, you know, went into the sea in bright now he has
- 18:24your neck and turn there for a second and it was a yes, the
- 18:26dog. Yeah, I want a shot of that.
- 18:30Well, so so we are on this planet and the planet.
- 18:36It is divided between 7th and Dion's and it is religion and
- 18:41science. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:42And so seventh makes sense because that's wise.
- 18:44People have Dion. So don't know where Dion's comes
- 18:46from, but there's a Greek word that means that about should
- 18:51like it's and deontology or deontological means is a sort of
- 18:58moral theory that certain things just have to be done.
- 19:01Like there's nothing I do. And so I wonder whether it's
- 19:07about that whether that's where that word comes from and it's
- 19:10just a space name who knows? And the seventh look ridiculous.
- 19:15It's June Hudson isn't it marvelous what do you I mean I
- 19:18look operatic but it yeah the we definitely do not certain like
- 19:21they're set of space weeks like from UFO you know that Jerry
- 19:25Edison being and yeah they know there's a BBC book coming and I
- 19:30where they put Wendy pepper in one of those.
- 19:32Oh my God. And then this is a Esther who is
- 19:37all Edward under the or something and this or Twilight
- 19:41of his career. Yeah.
- 19:43And the funny thing about it is we watched behind the sofa last
- 19:47night, didn't we? Yes.
- 19:49And, and it Tom and John Leeson both recognized him immediately.
- 19:56And we're talking about how great he was because he'd had
- 19:59such a huge career. And, and, and then this holy
- 20:04shit. I wasn't fully aware, but this
- 20:07is Jackie, he'll as what's a character called Alexa.
- 20:14Alexa, that's right. And I think she's absolutely
- 20:19magnificent. You know, I was watching this
- 20:22earlier with Mark and I say it like this is a rather kind of
- 20:24bombed because she's like the the religious nuts.
- 20:28Yes, that's right. And he's got around.
- 20:30Father, execute everybody, and she's young, she's not
- 20:32unreasonable character. Yeah, that's getting in the way
- 20:35exact. Really but Jackie, he'll bring
- 20:37so much dignity to it and this you play like Diaz.
- 20:40Well, like I, you know, it's Doctor Who it's bid made, we are
- 20:47on the side of science, right? And against religion, say she's
- 20:51generally speaking. So she is the closest we get to
- 20:53a villain apart from their gloss, obviously, but she's so
- 20:59Humane like I believe her, and this relationship with her owns
- 21:04a store, which is obviously a One.
- 21:06Last look at her small lightweight Charming she they
- 21:09hold hands a second ago. I like it.
- 21:12It's tactile ways. But actors bring that to it.
- 21:15Yeah. Well I'm not sure if they're in
- 21:17the time. No, I think she could have been
- 21:19a very boring character but getting Jackie Hill back and you
- 21:24know, it's funny, if we were to bring Jackie back, two years
- 21:28later, she would have played Barbara you know, because the
- 21:31show's Street - yes, he's 3 for the Nerds who are watching it.
- 21:35And I'm surprised actually J&T allowed this, because this sort
- 21:40of thing, he didn't realize was that he was caught trying to cut
- 21:42ties with three Leisure Hive Doctor Who.
- 21:45Yeah. But, but I mean, you know, she
- 21:48hadn't been in it for, you know, a long time for like sleeping
- 21:53Behind These. That's - resplendent.
- 21:55You know else. Insane costume looks.
- 21:58Fantastic glowing white hair? Yeah, it's so good.
- 22:03What did you do? All of lakes?
- 22:05It beeps up the episodes of Blake's 7 that she does do and I
- 22:11love this cut, it's like you know it needs the doctors
- 22:15delicacy of touch and then we cut to the dock so you know like
- 22:19doing these sort of crappy repair job on Canine there's
- 22:24some great jokes in this. Yeah I think I think the humor
- 22:27of this story is a little other at this this and I think a lot
- 22:29of static a is very funny as well.
- 22:32Yeah in place and those are sort of like the big comedy series
- 22:35Panting stories are Lush. Regressive vegetation, I love
- 22:40that so much angry Rose's, father, once you better than
- 22:45that, you buy that plan in the invasion of time.
- 22:48There's another Carlos, looks extremely weird.
- 22:51Well, yeah, I know. So this is a lot Advocate go.
- 22:58All these Tardis. Yes.
- 22:59Like this hoping we complain about calm, Colin Baker's time
- 23:03because they're just Anatole is bitch in a way.
- 23:04Yeah. Hey, they're having a bit of
- 23:06fun. You know, I really like this and
- 23:08I also like the fact that Ramana still wearing her outfit from
- 23:13the Leisure Hive and then changes, and then she changes
- 23:16when she goes on on to tie Gala, Joe one thing that really
- 23:20impressed me was the fact that this is all in the studio.
- 23:25I know we got, it's like yeah, jungle when inverted commas, but
- 23:28the base essentially there's a lot of this is sort of
- 23:29underground. Yeah, I really wrote Terrence
- 23:34Douglas direction of all of this This, I think it's designed
- 23:37really well. I think he places his cameras
- 23:39really well. He starts things in an
- 23:41interesting way where the scene earlier where somebody the
- 23:44paddle blows up. Yeah.
- 23:46Somebody's face is burn and are putting like got more Burr and
- 23:50then the camera sort of zooms out at the big.
- 23:52Like he knows how to make it a bit more interesting than just
- 23:55like Peter moffatt's pointing and shooting.
- 23:57Well also, you know, there's a bit of kind of exhaustion, you
- 24:03know, sort of design exhaustion in series 7.
- 24:05And I love Series 17 and I think part of the problem is that we
- 24:09lost the last six episodes, which they were saving up for
- 24:15ya. And so, there's a lot of just
- 24:18really exhausted looking space. Corridors Jackie Hill there,
- 24:21right? I guess, yeah, she has to try
- 24:23and deliver a line. It descended from the heavens,
- 24:27but then she follows her up with and where, yeah, Jeremy, she's
- 24:36Effects work. Yeah, so, so one of the problems
- 24:39of course in this era is that CSO never really convinces
- 24:46because there's a lot of fringing and stuff.
- 24:48And so they are pushing csos far as it will go.
- 24:51But I mean, if you compare all of the CSO, in this scene to the
- 24:55CSO in say underworld where they're just matting the actors
- 24:59onto a background. This is so much more
- 25:03interesting, like, the detailing this Model, you know, the little
- 25:07bits of sand heaped up on the thing by the screens.
- 25:11And then later on, when the control room thing, emerges from
- 25:15in the middle of the screens, like those models are good.
- 25:19Was it wasn't same thing in the you could have, obviously the
- 25:23person that's projected in and the camera move at the same.
- 25:26Yeah. So you've got, it's possible to
- 25:27suggest some movement. So you've got so what you, what
- 25:30you would always do, and what you had to do in Underworld was
- 25:34the camera had to be locked off. It couldn't move.
- 25:36So you would have a camera trained on the background, a
- 25:39camera trained on the actors and seen sink allowed you to move
- 25:44both of them in sync so we can pan across the model and have
- 25:50the actors move, you know, in in sync.
- 25:54So the cat. So the direction is much more
- 25:56interesting, and we did this. Remember in the Leisure Hive.
- 26:00You get that saying? Yeah, look here.
- 26:03So they're walking across and the background is You think I
- 26:06just think this looks great and I think the moon in the sky
- 26:09looks incredible. The fridge.
- 26:11Innocent terrible guys. Oh yeah, yeah, it's like seven
- 26:18teleport around of, you know, pretty much like that now, but I
- 26:23was very impressed with this in the yeah, yeah yeah.
- 26:36The, the anything about him and his wife's making the tea and
- 26:42yeah. And that's about it especially
- 26:44like this little injection of contemporary Earth.
- 26:47Yeah. Do we have a Godless?
- 26:49Do we see any of? No.
- 26:52But I think that's kind of okay and it I think that's okay.
- 26:57Like I love contemporary life is a setting.
- 26:59I think it's much better than various planets and stuff, it's
- 27:02good. But it's a look at the Moon.
- 27:04Yeah. Sorry.
- 27:06The screens? Yeah.
- 27:09Feels kind of like this. I anyone's has ever infused this
- 27:23much about Meg loss. Yeah, no I think that looks
- 27:25amazing and you know like we know that it's an effect was not
- 27:30on an alien planet. I think you know the models and
- 27:34rarely been this impressive in Doctor Who yeah.
- 27:39Poor old Bill phrases beard is or blue because it's something
- 27:44that's really hard to cover, didn't they?
- 27:49Production I think she yeah I think there might be some
- 27:52elements of the costumes from RE Vos operation here to somewhere.
- 27:57The guy who plays brought attack laughing his just ready so
- 28:02hilarious. Yeah.
- 28:03Dude the bit in a minute where is like 100 million credits.
- 28:07Ha ha. You know the pirate Michael
- 28:14dinnertime. These it held a company tablet
- 28:21but obviously his name was an anagram of bad act again.
- 28:25Yeah because they knew that they figured that they just they cast
- 28:30grogger really well. Yeah and then the sorry
- 28:32Territorial and he's so then they told him what like after
- 28:38the recording was done, like by the way and he only went and
- 28:41found his wife and he went guess, what?
- 28:43I've been playing a bad idea, Jay, and he caught wind of it
- 28:47because he panics, I'm using was telling everybody.
- 28:49Be in the bar and giant, he's like, oh, we can't have this.
- 28:52So when the book was written. Yeah, his name is changed.
- 28:57I'll really no longer an anagram of bad actor.
- 29:00James. He is that what you're worrying
- 29:02about? He saw where we go, make lost
- 29:05himself, you know, the Whip and the whip pan across it.
- 29:08So it's fine. I mean this is so Preposterous
- 29:14and actually like the voice of megawatts is really great.
- 29:18Yeah. Rattlesnake music.
- 29:21Yeah, you know it's really terrific but it is like it is
- 29:26absurd and I think like you know bring a semblance of normality
- 29:29into this conversation. I think this might be where some
- 29:32people that's their limit right Ascension.
- 29:35Talking. Giant rubber Cactus.
- 29:37Yeah, especially, you know, when it deflates in a minute, it's
- 29:40clearly only quite forgiving of this.
- 29:45It's a prop that has to be built and has to do.
- 29:49Things, you know them. You know they're doing that
- 29:51special effect camera. I think it looks tremendous
- 29:55really like he loves the the special at the makeup of the
- 29:59prayer because but the sequence is where they're just chatting
- 30:03away to the cactus. That's a bit, much know what I
- 30:06love how he says, I was never afraid they're gonna try and you
- 30:13know, him over so he's locked the doors.
- 30:15Yeah, I'll get out. Yeah, I love about General kraka
- 30:20scientist named Bill phrase. What I love about him is he
- 30:23like, it almost can't be asked to Rouse a performer.
- 30:26He has really laughing character.
- 30:28Yeah, it's Lazy Pirate. That's just remember, he's but
- 30:33in the secret diary of Adrian mole hole and it remember
- 30:37Mankato Leasing and Company. Yeah.
- 30:39Yeah it's actually quite amiable quite lovely in that.
- 30:41See ya the secret cult my with I can't remember.
- 30:46Possibly a will involve some way and I there's That very famous
- 30:49story, that we all know about how Fraser agreed to be in
- 30:52Doctor Who provided, he got to kick the dog.
- 30:56I think maybe he's still smarting from being perhaps.
- 31:09You know what that started in Doctor Who I want to say colony
- 31:13in space one season layer menu item use?
- 31:17Yeah, I knew yeah, you're right. He says, they've been using this
- 31:20bloody thing. Oh my God, the signs.
- 31:22We can design a triangle. Did, you know?
- 31:25He's a great piece of Kit and they've put little LEDs in the
- 31:28corners. Okay, so what this is Sergeant.
- 31:32Yeah, this is something that I have heard you object to in fly
- 31:36for entirety in that, you know, the plot sort of like this is
- 31:39very seasoned 22 in that they are completely kept out of the
- 31:43action and the footings hysteresis is yeah.
- 31:49And yet that's not a problem. No, we're just because watching
- 31:51these two together and they're suddenly much smarter this
- 31:55season two, you know, like a little less in love while I
- 32:02think they were arguing. A lot is yes.
- 32:05So depending on how they were definitely or watching a state
- 32:07of decay said, well, they were desperately in love or refusing
- 32:12to talk to each other. Yeah, so yeah.
- 32:13And he said, what's Tom's eyes, if he's looking at her, they're
- 32:16all right. He's not and you can tell that
- 32:20with Tom when Tom refuses to look at his coat, you know, he'd
- 32:24like he doesn't Louise. Well, I'll tell ya, I think
- 32:32there's two time-wasting things in this and the first one is The
- 32:35Chronic hysteresis, and then there's another one.
- 32:38Yeah, yeah. And then there's another one.
- 32:40Yeah. Romano's leading them around in
- 32:43circles and you kind of go. All right.
- 32:45Well, we burn 10 minutes of this episode Yeah that's hilarious.
- 32:49Chester try to explain to the Pyro's.
- 32:51Yeah it's like preventing a Boeing some of its planet
- 32:54revolves counterclockwise something which absolutely makes
- 32:58no sense at all. She's
- 33:13particularly brought a deck. God he's funny.
- 33:16This is hilarious. So you got there.
- 33:18The Earth man and the enormous Cactus go into booths.
- 33:21Yeah, yeah, this is the sort of thing that Janet field in a daze
- 33:26will be laughing their heads off about.
- 33:27When I, you know, like I, you know, last night on behind the
- 33:32sofa, they were talking about how great the sets are and I
- 33:35think they really are. You know, they're that set is
- 33:38pretty fantastic. I think.
- 33:41And whilst like jungle that we see later I just always wish
- 33:45they'd feel me on film. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:47When they're trying to do it. It's not the jungle from
- 33:50preacher for the period or anything like that.
- 33:52It's a bit more nightmare of Eden and created from the beard
- 33:55all he said. Yeah.
- 33:57But you know what the hell is going brain?
- 34:09This place is like live, Wonder worry.
- 34:32I do love the transformation because it's cut, cut, cut, cut
- 34:39car. It's a bit like the sequence in
- 34:41the Leisure Hive, which should have been so absurd.
- 34:44Where did pull off the mask? Yeah, the Famas he comes.
- 34:47But there's so many cards. Yeah your brains crap.
- 34:50What's going on and then you just reveal the monster.
- 34:53Okay it's that I don't know what the different actors are.
- 35:00They like reactions from Bill reactions from broader DAC, all
- 35:05of that and it is for them to say dr.
- 35:06Scott. Yeah yeah, yeah.
- 35:13But it does it does take a sort of hopeful director to because
- 35:16you know PM off. It may have just pointed the
- 35:19camera and said all right. Well yeah.
- 35:21Active who directs? This is okay.
- 35:24Y'all you you said that before? Yeah.
- 35:26Oh my God. You know, they right - Black
- 35:28Orchid. Kids demons and K900 boy.
- 35:33Does he also just thought to himself?
- 35:36He does. Yeah that's taught in flights
- 35:39are entirely complains that Terrence Dudley scripts always
- 35:42have people just going through doors.
- 35:44And so I think in a way to let so for they tested or after
- 35:49doors, which like a fart, I think this is.
- 35:53Yeah you're right. We just cutting from person to
- 35:55person rather than just leaving the camera and other things
- 35:58we've seen him do actual things. You hear what the inspiration
- 36:02for me gloss was no. So Andrew God I never get the
- 36:06names right? Yeah.
- 36:08Andrew McCulloch and John Flanagan.
- 36:09That's right. They live together in the house
- 36:13which had the front door used in the Coppola.
- 36:15So, okay, I'll say were writing this Margaret hate Hotel.
- 36:21Turned up and said hello I'm here, scouting locations for
- 36:23Doctor Who and your brother Ryan.
- 36:46Okay, so this is the beginning of the history hysteresis.
- 36:51Yeah, and I guess what? We made fun of this our episode
- 36:58on May gloss that fly through entirety is called by the power
- 37:01of bad acting and that's how they get out of it.
- 37:04There we go. So and this is, you know, we'd
- 37:07made goes on about finally bringing proper science to
- 37:11Doctor Who and moving it away from science fantasy.
- 37:13But the And the science that he brings to Doctor Who he's very
- 37:17often magic. And the way magic Works, he is
- 37:21if you manipulate a symbol it has, or it has an effect on the
- 37:27object that symbolized, right? And so we recorded an episode,
- 37:34we recorded a podcast earlier this week on the Christmas
- 37:39Invasion. Mmm-hmm, and remember that you
- 37:42could manipulate the blood Sample and cause people to
- 37:46behave in a certain way and that's magic.
- 37:49And so here, we've got a Time Loop but we get out of the time
- 37:52loop knot by precisely recreating the events that take
- 37:58place inside the time Loop by doing it by saying, the same
- 38:02words by doing a representation of what goes on in the time like
- 38:06funny, well it's great I get this timing wrong.
- 38:09Yes. Elijah because
- 38:21The first line at the time. Lee be real honest, a blemish.
- 38:24Even we are again, hope. So, here we go.
- 38:26Again, she's so good. And I love the fact that I have
- 38:31to say something as something that sounds very diverse talents
- 38:33to make these Raonic history. Yeah.
- 38:35Well, no, because if she'd have gone, we're in a Time Loop, they
- 38:39wouldn't have found half as far, but it's a very again bid made
- 38:43has a particular type of technobabble and it's often
- 38:50Urkel tachyon it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:53Like at the sort of thing charged vacuum employment.
- 38:56You know, like all of those things are just very magical.
- 39:01I think they get a disguise, get rid of the disguise completely
- 39:04Morris gate. And it whole thing just feels
- 39:06like, yeah. Ferret out each other's matter
- 39:08how brilliant is wonderful but Brendan, you know, yeah, well,
- 39:12yeah, it's such a, it's such a great season at least.
- 39:17Oh, but that is for long enough now that I can say alive, like,
- 39:21Rhesus. You know what that means?
- 39:23Lot easier. I mean, this is one of my
- 39:25favorite artists Cruise ever. I'll for sure.
- 39:28And you know what, I didn't think I would ever hear anyone
- 39:31say a bad word about the fourth dr.
- 39:33Romano canine, but peel a didn't like them when you have a
- 39:37because he felt as if they were quite patronising to the people
- 39:40around them as a child right? Which like, when I rewatched
- 39:44Sharda, I could see that angle with especially with Chris.
- 39:50Yeah. yeah, but I think that's part of the doctor's character
- 39:52though, you know, like the doctor is He's, you know, like
- 39:57right back from the beginning of, you know, I mean you have
- 40:00always been hurt. We for instance was, he's
- 40:05patronising the people around him, you know, that isn't.
- 40:09But both Bill and and Sean Pertwee colleagues only is
- 40:14everybody and I just think these are smart people.
- 40:20You know like and they're fun and funny and stuff.
- 40:23I'm really like this crew well look.
- 40:26I put out to Twitter I can do a couple after every episode.
- 40:30All right. Some questions about Meg loss
- 40:34and you know people are obviously very excited that
- 40:36you're here because we were inundated that's so far up your
- 40:41imagination. Okay, I'm gonna start with one
- 40:45by A peculiar gentleman known as Mark a rulings as okay.
- 40:49Mark raw asked if you could cast Jaclyn Hill in a different part
- 40:55in season 18, I mean who would it be?
- 41:01Many ladies are there in season 18?
- 41:03I think efficient make a fine cassia in a cave or a tree.
- 41:07I've gotten one g.i. seeking like Camilla.
- 41:11Oh, that's all waiting to feed her auntie.
- 41:16For this is the obvious, the obvious answer to you.
- 41:20Do you think she could do? We accept?
- 41:21We either take Hands-On or nestor's mother in the?
- 41:23Yeah. That mother, I don't know.
- 41:28I mean, I think she's well suited she's terrific and like,
- 41:31you know, had, they brought in somebody who was just having a
- 41:33laugh with it. Yeah.
- 41:35Yeah. No.
- 41:35Sheesh. She takes it seriously and
- 41:37brings just sort of warmth and Humanity to that part.
- 41:41Okay. Well Daniel no I asked was it
- 41:44that was it a good idea to bring a jacket on your back?
- 41:46Yes I've got your for that whilst aerys Dudley a better
- 41:50director than a writer to show you think about his other story.
- 41:54So I know some what you think of for the Before doomsday is kind
- 41:57of terrible, what the script K9 & Company is terrible.
- 42:03Kings demons. Yeah, shockingly, bad, black
- 42:06orchids. Well, yeah, but I think the
- 42:09production leaves Black Orchid enormously.
- 42:12I think I'm going to ask you one more that.
- 42:14Well, I'm and I think we both said like that there is a visual
- 42:19interest in this. Yeah, yeah.
- 42:21Yeah. That I think that this has been
- 42:22a season earlier, it would have been much brown or This
- 42:26competition, they would be sure so the concentric shapes and it
- 42:32listen to this. I don't believe it.
- 42:34Timing deliveries asks his from to a doctor who too hot for TV.
- 42:40Yeah so distance is fantastic. Would this story have been
- 42:44better if it was the season before?
- 42:46No. It would have been worse.
- 42:48I think I think so as well. It would have been cheaper.
- 42:50Yeah no Janet. I think it's already the cheapy.
- 42:53Yeah. Yeah.
- 42:54It's the cheapy and look how visually.
- 42:56Ambitious. It is.
- 42:58Okay, wanted to give you 10 old. Darren lit round or yes?
- 43:03This work. You know how did Kings and
- 43:06scored part 1? I'll thank you.
- 43:08Darren. I was asked earlier to cover in
- 43:10for an ill. Peter Howell who recovered to
- 43:13school? Arrest, who's scored you prefer?
- 43:17I mean, I can also, do you like Peter?
- 43:18How better than King? I like England episode 1.
- 43:21No I said okay I'm from does episode 1?
- 43:23Yeah, okay I love Kingston's music.
- 43:26So But I think, you know, like it.
- 43:28Sometimes I find myself not knowing who's scoring in this
- 43:31season, but please, they do have some toasted, and they're great,
- 43:35although later in the story, it does it at one, it was it called
- 43:38when you have like, a dialogue explaining the action in the
- 43:41music or cycle. The other episode 3 is going
- 43:45death, death. He was penciled in for a salad
- 44:04or pasta were black or both of those.
- 44:08Actual actors are SO grinder. In that role.
- 44:11I do. Ya like, it's TV.
- 44:13Do you know what I mean? Like, if we can have them, if we
- 44:16can heavy and Marta come back. A few years later and play
- 44:18Harry. Or if we can have Freema
- 44:22agyeman, come back, two episodes later and play a companion.
- 44:26Like, who cares? It's made up its TV.
- 44:29I just think if you know you just get people if they're
- 44:31available and there's no way that like it's almost impossible
- 44:35to imagine anyone doing a better job than Jackie heel in this
- 44:39story, which I still think they missed a trick though.
- 44:41By not having, I know. You can just say, this is a girl
- 44:45Max, it'll just turning up for one scene in the.
- 44:47He's part of a time there was that most of it actually, okay.
- 45:00That was one of my gloss. We still haven't quite reached
- 45:04absolved for theory in the Tardis.
- 45:06No, we haven't left the Tardis but we will.
- 45:09Oh, actually no. There is one more question.
- 45:11All right, I've got to ask you or three actually because
- 45:15somebody thinks they're incredibly witty, you know where
- 45:20I'm going with this. Oh, I don't know who this is.
- 45:23Wow, Fraser Gregory. Oh, okay.
- 45:26Just before the dust. Does The Chronic hysteresis?
- 45:29See get repetitive. He also asks, does The Chronic
- 45:33history seen get repetitive? He also our calendars.
- 45:38No, it doesn't. I love it.
- 45:39I absolutely adore. It just long enough.
- 45:42Yeah. Yeah, you know, to a point where
- 45:43like, okay, maybe a bit longer because because it's stupid,
- 45:46because it's a Time Loop, and then we just get a bit of a
- 45:49while to kind of chat and do other things.
- 45:51And then we go back into the time.
- 45:52We begin. Like, I think it's sort of quite
- 45:54fun, and they don't show the The the whole repeated seen all the
- 45:59time. Yeah, and yeah, it's worth
- 46:02remembering as well. There are TV shows that will
- 46:04devote entire 45 minute episodes waste time alone.
- 46:07Now Star Trek, huge, you do pretty well.
- 46:10Yeah, sex horse in effect Monday in their house with Harley and
- 46:14Magic to make the sanest man Kona all the best discoveries.
- 46:19Well, let's hop into that time Loop, then, let's do it.
