- 0:00Speaker 1: The pressure is on full boil as MotoGP continues to
- 0:04Speaker 1: spice things up. The championship battle is now only separated
- 0:07Speaker 1: by seventeen points, with the hashtag rematch becoming the main
- 0:11Speaker 1: ingredients in our recipe for a Moto GP champion.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Thailand was all about.
- 0:16Speaker 1: The battle of the brave. But will Malaysia bring the
- 0:19Speaker 1: heat or be the calm before the final storm? As
- 0:22Speaker 1: the writer's head just to paying, every point is served
- 0:25Speaker 1: hot and every move is.
- 0:26Speaker 2: A dash of daring.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Can the current leader hold their nerve or all the
- 0:30Speaker 1: challenges cook up a surprise? I'm your host, Rineita Vmullen,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and joining me is the man that has the insider edge,
- 0:37Speaker 1: like a perfectly balanced Ty Curry, bold, sharp and never dull.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Matt Clayton, Matt Thailand, Bean and Gorne. And I know
- 0:46Speaker 1: we're obviously going to talk about the championship contenders and
- 0:49Speaker 1: the fight and everything, but let's talk about that weekend.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Let's talk about the drama, the excitement that was Moto.
- 0:56Speaker 3: GP to a t ah Look, sure was Renado. Look firstly,
- 1:01Speaker 3: love the intro because it's made me feel really hungry
- 1:03Speaker 3: for all that talk of food. But look, Thailand was
- 1:07Speaker 3: I love it when it gets to this time of
- 1:08Speaker 3: the season and we have a live championship fight, because
- 1:11Speaker 3: it just magnifies everything that little bit more. There's an
- 1:14Speaker 3: increase in attention, there's an increase in perhaps some political interference.
- 1:19Speaker 3: You've got this intra du Catti battle where Ducati can't lose,
- 1:23Speaker 3: but they can if Martin wins the World Championship and
- 1:26Speaker 3: then disappears with another one to a prilier for next year.
- 1:29Speaker 3: So throw a wet race into the mix. And we
- 1:32Speaker 3: haven't had a wet race in so long that I'd
- 1:34Speaker 3: forgotten how tense they were a bit of Jack Miller involvement.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I mean, it was super, super fun, great time slot
- 1:40Speaker 3: for Australian audiences. And here we arrive at Sapaang with
- 1:43Speaker 3: our first match point for Juge Martin again in a
- 1:47Speaker 3: great time slot for Rossie audiences, and bring it on.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I say, well, let's talk about you caddy because Saturday's
- 1:53Speaker 1: sprint all eight you caddies were in the top eight.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I've been racking my brain.
- 2:00Speaker 1: I'm going has that ever happened before where the entire
- 2:03Speaker 1: Jucaddi lineup has completely like, especially when there's so many
- 2:06Speaker 1: privateer teams right.
- 2:08Speaker 3: It's amazing to me that, given how good Ducaddi's been
- 2:10Speaker 3: this year, that it took us to the third last
- 2:12Speaker 3: round for them to lock out the top eight in
- 2:15Speaker 3: a sprint or a race, because they've been clearly the
- 2:17Speaker 3: best bike all year, and you think, how hasn't this
- 2:19Speaker 3: happened before? But you know, people have been injured, or
- 2:21Speaker 3: they've taken each other out or what have you. But yeah,
- 2:24Speaker 3: that was they just underlined twenty twenty four in thirteen
- 2:28Speaker 3: laps on Saturday, where the top eight finishes were all
- 2:30Speaker 3: eight of the Ducaddies. Certainly didn't get that on Sunday.
- 2:33Speaker 3: But it has been a Ducati Championship this year. But
- 2:37Speaker 3: full credit to Ducadi in some ways in that they
- 2:40Speaker 3: haven't done what you would think would be sensible and
- 2:43Speaker 3: maybe put some team orders in here or start interfering
- 2:45Speaker 3: behind the scenes. These guys are free to race at
- 2:48Speaker 3: the moment, and I say at the moment because it
- 2:50Speaker 3: could be a caveat in that, but yeah, it pretty
- 2:52Speaker 3: much summed upmurdor gup in twenty twenty four, didn't it.
- 2:54Speaker 3: If you're scanning down the list and you're trying to
- 2:56Speaker 3: look for the first non Ducaddi and you're just going
- 2:58Speaker 3: further and further and and then you eventually find one
- 3:01Speaker 3: in ninth place.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I was reading on a.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Not a Fox article, unfortunately, but support him for starters.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I know I shouldn't be starting the Fox podcast on that,
- 3:13Speaker 1: but I've heard Anne Vashanini has said that there are
- 3:17Speaker 1: no team orders in Malaysia. His quote was something along
- 3:20Speaker 1: the lines of, I also want to win in Malaysia,
- 3:22Speaker 1: so I'm going to be trying to win that race.
- 3:25Speaker 1: So I'm not sure if if ANAA is going to
- 3:28Speaker 1: necessarily be helping Peko try and defend off Juhe Martine
- 3:32Speaker 1: this weekend. But we noticed that he didn't really do
- 3:34Speaker 1: that either at in Thailand, did he Because he won
- 3:37Speaker 1: the sprint on Sunday, but then an A crash out
- 3:40Speaker 1: of the main race sorry sprint on Saturday, and then
- 3:42Speaker 1: an AA crashing out on the main race on Sunday.
- 3:44Speaker 1: So I kind of feel like ana is just trying
- 3:47Speaker 1: to finish off his year, not necessarily think about the
- 3:49Speaker 1: championship or Peko.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Yeah, it's interesting because up until the end of the
- 3:53Speaker 3: Thailand Sunday race, both an AA and Mark Marquez were
- 3:56Speaker 3: still mathematically in contingent for the title now realistic. We
- 4:00Speaker 3: know they probably weren't, but they were still mathematically in it.
- 4:03Speaker 3: The problem they've got now is that, yeah, there's two
- 4:06Speaker 3: rounds to go, Bastianini and Marquez are both out of
- 4:09Speaker 3: championship contention. But particularly in the case of Bastianini, he's
- 4:12Speaker 3: leaving Dakti altogether in two races, So why does he
- 4:16Speaker 3: particularly care what Doukati want? And why is he necessarily
- 4:20Speaker 3: going to listen to any potential demands for management to
- 4:23Speaker 3: do the right thing by his teammate in Banyaya because
- 4:27Speaker 3: he's not going to be there next year anyway. He's
- 4:28Speaker 3: off to KTM. Ducati have decided he's surplus to need.
- 4:31Speaker 3: So there's all these little associated side stories that they've
- 4:36Speaker 3: kind of been, I don't know, hovering for a lot
- 4:38Speaker 3: of the season because all the rider market stuff shook
- 4:40Speaker 3: out so early. It's at this time of the season
- 4:43Speaker 3: now where every point is critical. Like you said in
- 4:45Speaker 3: the intro, that's when all this stuff really comes to roost.
- 4:48Speaker 3: So yeah, be super interesting to see a if Anaya
- 4:51Speaker 3: is asked in Malaysia because he's now out of championship contention,
- 4:55Speaker 3: but if he's hearing suddenly it doesn't work. Sorry, I
- 4:58Speaker 3: didn't understand the request. So it's gonna be a bit
- 5:01Speaker 3: of that going on. It could be a few mapping
- 5:04Speaker 3: eight signals and other things, and his Malaysia after alls.
- 5:06Speaker 3: It's always possible. So it just adds to the intrigue,
- 5:09Speaker 3: doesn't it.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Even like Mark Marquez thinking like him at Philip Whalon
- 5:13Speaker 1: and watching him this weekend, some of those moves that
- 5:15Speaker 1: he was putting on Bana and Sunday's race, you can
- 5:18Speaker 1: just tell Mark is in it to win it, and
- 5:21Speaker 1: he is not necessarily thinking about the championship. We know
- 5:24Speaker 1: he respects what they're doing. We know he's eight time
- 5:26Speaker 1: world champion that understands it. But in that moment he's like,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I'm clearly faster, I'm going.
- 5:31Speaker 2: To go for this.
- 5:33Speaker 3: Well, when you say he does not thinking about the championship,
- 5:35Speaker 3: he might not be thinking about this one, but I
- 5:36Speaker 3: reckon he's thinking about next year in twenty twenty five,
- 5:39Speaker 3: when he and Banyai are in the same team on
- 5:41Speaker 3: the same equipment, and now, without doing something completely crazy
- 5:44Speaker 3: and taking somebody off, there are little psychological bombs you
- 5:49Speaker 3: can stick in there for next year, and it's like,
- 5:51Speaker 3: by the way, the only risk you won the World
- 5:53Speaker 3: Championship is that I beat the guy that was trying
- 5:55Speaker 3: to fight you for it. Or you can say I'm
- 5:57Speaker 3: riding a year old bike and I'm still fighting with
- 5:59Speaker 3: you guys who are going for the championship, So just
- 6:01Speaker 3: watch me go next year. So there's all these little
- 6:04Speaker 3: psychological things, and we know Mark's brilliant at this, this
- 6:06Speaker 3: is what he does. So any chance he has to
- 6:09Speaker 3: try and steal a little inch of territory against Van
- 6:12Speaker 3: Yaya next year, I think you'll probably take it. I
- 6:15Speaker 3: don't think he's going to pull over and wave him through.
- 6:17Speaker 3: So given that it is a bit of a decadi
- 6:19Speaker 3: benefit at the moment, as you said before, you know,
- 6:22Speaker 3: I still think there's a lot of player in these
- 6:23Speaker 3: last two races, and I don't think it's going to
- 6:26Speaker 3: be a simple road to the championship for either rider,
- 6:28Speaker 3: despite the points suggesting that it's Martine's to lose, and
- 6:32Speaker 3: we can probably get into that in a sec. But
- 6:35Speaker 3: there's going to be some drama. You just know there's
- 6:37Speaker 3: going to be with these two venues and the weather
- 6:39Speaker 3: you get at each too, and just how finely poised
- 6:42Speaker 3: everything is in that Ducati stable, there's going to be
- 6:45Speaker 3: some drama.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I wanted to ask you your thoughts on Peko this
- 6:49Speaker 1: weekend because I thought I saw a very similar Pecko
- 6:52Speaker 1: to what we witnessed that Philip Island in the fact
- 6:55Speaker 1: that Friday Saturday he looked stressed.
- 6:59Speaker 2: He looked nervous.
- 7:00Speaker 1: You could just see it in his facial expressions and
- 7:02Speaker 1: even his body language on the bike. And then it
- 7:04Speaker 1: seems like Sunday, I don't know, something happens overnight Saturday,
- 7:08Speaker 1: something clicks Sunday morning, and he looks calm, cool, collected,
- 7:12Speaker 1: and like the professor. And that's when we're seeing these results.
- 7:15Speaker 1: What do you think is going.
- 7:16Speaker 2: On there with Pecko?
- 7:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it's interesting. We've said this before in that I
- 7:20Speaker 3: think if Pecko's someone who likes to control controllables, so
- 7:24Speaker 3: when you have weekends where there's some sketchy weather or
- 7:27Speaker 3: some random tire behavior, or you know, he has his
- 7:31Speaker 3: lap interfered with with a red flag or a yellow
- 7:33Speaker 3: flag or something in Q two, if things aren't completely
- 7:36Speaker 3: on the path of Pecho, he can go off the
- 7:37Speaker 3: reservation a little bit. But what was super interesting on
- 7:40Speaker 3: Sunday he said they found something in that Sunday morning
- 7:44Speaker 3: warm up, you know, ten minutes in the rain, and
- 7:46Speaker 3: then they sat around afterwards and worked something out behind
- 7:49Speaker 3: the scenes that gave him the confidence that he could
- 7:52Speaker 3: race the type of race he wanted on Sunday. And
- 7:56Speaker 3: you think, you know, in a position like he was,
- 7:58Speaker 3: where you know, that was as much win of a
- 8:00Speaker 3: race as he's probably had in the best part of
- 8:02Speaker 3: two or three years. And with that weather, with Mark
- 8:06Speaker 3: Marquez climbing all over him at a circuit that Mark
- 8:09Speaker 3: has been particularly strong out in the past, that was
- 8:11Speaker 3: the sort of day where Peco could have lost so
- 8:14Speaker 3: so much, but it was really impressive for him to
- 8:19Speaker 3: combat the conditions, absorb the pressure form behind, and do
- 8:22Speaker 3: exactly what he needed to do. It was almost the
- 8:25Speaker 3: perfect Sunday for him. And I say almost in that
- 8:28Speaker 3: he could have quite used Mark Marcus finishing second in
- 8:30Speaker 3: that race just to take a few more points of Martine.
- 8:34Speaker 3: So in the end he gained five points on Martin
- 8:37Speaker 3: on Sunday. But I think psychologically that's a huge victory
- 8:41Speaker 3: for him because there were a lot of trapdoors and
- 8:44Speaker 3: things that could have tripped him up on Sunday, and
- 8:45Speaker 3: he held his nerve and converted, and you know you
- 8:49Speaker 3: mentioned the professor. That's a win that not only he
- 8:53Speaker 3: could take, because there's other writers that do well in
- 8:54Speaker 3: those sketchy conditions. But it was a really, really well
- 8:57Speaker 3: taken victory given what was at stake. But yeah, you
- 9:00Speaker 3: are right, like, unless things are completely moving in a
- 9:04Speaker 3: really linear direction for him, I think Martine's may be
- 9:07Speaker 3: better at improvising when things aren't going quite to plan.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Whereas you know, we saw at philip Ylo we had
- 9:13Speaker 3: a rained out session, we had a random qualify, we
- 9:17Speaker 3: had wildlife running all over the track, all sorts of
- 9:19Speaker 3: craziness going on. Pecko didn't have to that particularly well,
- 9:22Speaker 3: So a more stable weekend is better for him. You
- 9:25Speaker 3: could say, let's.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Talk about someone who is known as a wet weather specialist,
- 9:30Speaker 1: and I know that he doesn't like that term, Jack Miller.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Exciting to see him closer to the front, and it
- 9:37Speaker 1: seems like just because you know, he's been named wet
- 9:39Speaker 1: weather specialist because he's one two grand PRIs in the
- 9:41Speaker 1: wet it's just nice. I think that the rain makes
- 9:45Speaker 1: it a bit more of an even playing field, so
- 9:47Speaker 1: we can see Jack ride that bike to its potential
- 9:50Speaker 1: and what he's able to do in those conditions, level
- 9:53Speaker 1: up closer to those U caddies.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Shame he couldn't put it on the podium.
- 9:56Speaker 1: For so long at the end and those laps, I'm
- 9:59Speaker 1: going come on, just a whole off, Pedio Costa.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You can do this like finish the year off strong
- 10:04Speaker 2: but exciting to see a top five result for.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Jack fantastic considering where he started. I mean, he's fifteenth
- 10:10Speaker 3: on the grid and he's one of those riders that
- 10:13Speaker 3: if it's fully dry or fully wet, I don't think
- 10:16Speaker 3: that plays into his sweet spot when is that sketchy
- 10:19Speaker 3: half and half in a situation like that, when he
- 10:22Speaker 3: can be at the front, we know that Mark Marquez
- 10:24Speaker 3: is probably the best in those really transitional conditions. Jack's
- 10:27Speaker 3: built brilliant at finding where the grip is, where it's
- 10:31Speaker 3: either not quite wet or not quite dry. When it's
- 10:33Speaker 3: fully wet, he was able to get up to the front.
- 10:36Speaker 3: He's got this fantastic feel for the conditions. But as
- 10:39Speaker 3: the race wound down, he said afterwards that he used
- 10:42Speaker 3: so much tire to get through from fifteenth to third
- 10:46Speaker 3: that he ran in third for ten laps there and
- 10:48Speaker 3: the race was literally two laps too long because he
- 10:50Speaker 3: just had nothing left with which to fight, but he
- 10:52Speaker 3: certainly put up a pretty stern defense. There are a
- 10:55Speaker 3: few passes and repasses in that stow she had with
- 10:58Speaker 3: the cost of that, I think both of them thoroughly enjoy.
- 11:00Speaker 3: But there was a lot of sharp intakes of breath
- 11:03Speaker 3: from where I was watching it, because that was pretty
- 11:05Speaker 3: close with those two. But just a really good sunday
- 11:09Speaker 3: for Jack after the rest of the weekend hadn't been
- 11:11Speaker 3: so great. He's so good in conditions like that, but
- 11:15Speaker 3: in some respects he could have probably done with its
- 11:17Speaker 3: stopping raining about ten laps from the end, and then
- 11:20Speaker 3: it's like, well, how much grip is there? It's so
- 11:22Speaker 3: hot entire land. Does the track dry out? Does it not?
- 11:25Speaker 3: But all in all, for him to finish fifth, that's
- 11:27Speaker 3: equal to his best result this year in Portugal, which
- 11:30Speaker 3: is so long ago that we almost forget it was
- 11:32Speaker 3: back in round two. Nice to see him back up
- 11:34Speaker 3: the front again. But you saw his face afterwards. It's like, ah,
- 11:37Speaker 3: if I was ever going to get a podium in
- 11:39Speaker 3: this last season with KTM, that might have been it.
- 11:42Speaker 3: So you know, a tinge of disappointment. I'm sure, but
- 11:44Speaker 3: I'm sure he appreciated running up the front in a
- 11:46Speaker 3: race where plenty of people made mistakes. He didn't make
- 11:49Speaker 3: mistakes and had a very good weekend.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I think what I like to see at the end
- 11:54Speaker 1: of this race is we knew.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Pego was out the front, We knew what was happening there.
- 11:59Speaker 1: It was nice to see that there was some battles
- 12:01Speaker 1: being shown on the coverage because it made the race exciting, right,
- 12:04Speaker 1: we obviously miss a lot of what happens further down
- 12:07Speaker 1: the field. And let's talk about Frankie Morbidelli and Fabio Corderro,
- 12:13Speaker 1: because there's.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Been a lot of talk on.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Socials and articles and coverage on their thoughts on this.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Because Fabia called the move that Frankie Morbidelli did a
- 12:23Speaker 1: suicide attack. Now I feel like that's quite a bold
- 12:27Speaker 1: statement to make. And obviously he took Fabria out of
- 12:31Speaker 1: the race. Frankie knocked Fabya out of the race, so
- 12:33Speaker 1: we know that, Like there's anger and stuff there. But
- 12:37Speaker 1: what is going on with these moves and these writers
- 12:41Speaker 1: where it just seems like Marquez the same thing with
- 12:43Speaker 1: Juan Mire.
- 12:44Speaker 2: They're pushing so hard it's like they're not even I.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Don't know thinking about the repercussions or what could happen
- 12:50Speaker 1: from it.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Yeah, the Morbidelli cottro one former teammates, but not best mates,
- 12:55Speaker 3: you could say that. I think where Fabia was so
- 12:58Speaker 3: frustrated was that he was up in the top five
- 13:00Speaker 3: four on that first lap, just unbelievable start after he'd
- 13:02Speaker 3: had a very very good Q two. And let's face it,
- 13:06Speaker 3: Frankie Morbidelli is somewhat of a magnet for these sorts
- 13:08Speaker 3: of things. He has priors, as they would say, and
- 13:11Speaker 3: I think that stemp that was a lot of Quatrero's frustration.
- 13:15Speaker 3: It's like, this is a guy who's renowned for doing
- 13:17Speaker 3: stuff like this and obviously lost a really good position.
- 13:20Speaker 3: Now obviously a lot of race to go. Who knows
- 13:23Speaker 3: if Fabio can stay there. But when you're in a
- 13:25Speaker 3: Yabahar and you're up at the top six, it's a
- 13:27Speaker 3: pretty special day because it doesn't that very often, and so
- 13:30Speaker 3: I think that was partly the frustration there, and also
- 13:32Speaker 3: because it's not Frankie's first rodeo, is it. But the
- 13:36Speaker 3: Marquees Mere one again four be teammates and not best
- 13:39Speaker 3: mates as I said before, but I think the Marques
- 13:43Speaker 3: Mere one towards the end of the race a Marques
- 13:46Speaker 3: didn't really have a rare break on that bike after
- 13:48Speaker 3: he crashed it and then picked it up. And we've
- 13:50Speaker 3: seen this with Mark before that when he does get
- 13:53Speaker 3: shuffled through to the back of the pack because he's
- 13:55Speaker 3: made a mistake or he's run wide, or he's crashed,
- 13:57Speaker 3: it's like the red mist descends, and if you're in
- 14:00Speaker 3: his way, you best get out of it because he
- 14:02Speaker 3: is coming through no matter what. And obviously the ultimate
- 14:05Speaker 3: example of this is Spade twenty twenty when he broke
- 14:07Speaker 3: his arm because he was coming through from the back
- 14:09Speaker 3: and making everyone look lower riding bicycles not motor GP bikes.
- 14:13Speaker 3: So yeah, look, the red myst does descend a little bit,
- 14:16Speaker 3: but I don't know if you caught onto this Roneta.
- 14:19Speaker 3: So he got a drop one place penalty for the
- 14:22Speaker 3: incident with Chuan Mir So Mark, knowing how to game
- 14:26Speaker 3: the system as best as he can, he then went
- 14:28Speaker 3: and overtook Taka Nakagami he was ahead of him, dropped
- 14:32Speaker 3: back behind Nakagami, therefore relinquishing one position, and then immediately
- 14:36Speaker 3: went straight back past him again, so it's like, well,
- 14:38Speaker 3: I serve him a penalty. So at the end of
- 14:40Speaker 3: the race, he kept flicking on the timing monitor from
- 14:43Speaker 3: eleventh to twelfth, to eleventh to twelfth and then finally
- 14:46Speaker 3: settled at eleventh because the rules state that you have
- 14:48Speaker 3: to drop one position. The rules don't state that you
- 14:51Speaker 3: have to drop one position to the guy that you
- 14:53Speaker 3: sent into the next suburb with your passing at tipped
- 14:56Speaker 3: out at third to three. So Mark, Big Mark, he
- 14:58Speaker 3: knows where to work the boundaries. So the rules they
- 15:00Speaker 3: dropped one position, he's I dropped one position for one
- 15:03Speaker 3: quarter and then I blitzed back past Nakagabi again and
- 15:06Speaker 3: got my five points for finishing eleventh. So I reckon,
- 15:09Speaker 3: that's a loophole and the rules that needs to be
- 15:13Speaker 3: looked at to be perfectly honest, because it's kind of
- 15:15Speaker 3: unrealistic for Mark in that situation to drop all the
- 15:18Speaker 3: way back behind Juan Miir to eventually catch up to
- 15:22Speaker 3: him and go past him because for all we know,
- 15:23Speaker 3: Mia could have been picking his bike up out of
- 15:25Speaker 3: the gravel. So you've got Mark pulled over on the
- 15:27Speaker 3: side of the road waiting for a repsole hon that
- 15:29Speaker 3: to come past so he can overtake him again. So
- 15:31Speaker 3: I'm not sure that's realistic either. Maybe there needs to
- 15:34Speaker 3: be some sort of middle ground in that situation. It's like, well,
- 15:36Speaker 3: maybe you should just have to do a long lap
- 15:38Speaker 3: or something. But yeah, he certainly had to game the system,
- 15:41Speaker 3: and at the end of the day the rule makers
- 15:43Speaker 3: rulemakers can say, well, I don't like what you did,
- 15:46Speaker 3: but you followed the letter of the law, so well done.
- 15:48Speaker 3: We might need to adjust that one.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Well did you see on socials as well, Matt?
- 15:52Speaker 1: They showed clips of Mark Mark has with his the leathers,
- 15:56Speaker 1: the little strap that covers the zip undone, and there's
- 15:59Speaker 1: people saying, well that sh have been panalized and whatnot.
- 16:03Speaker 1: There's so many fine lines that it's hard to know
- 16:06Speaker 1: where it ends where it starts. I'm hoping that next year,
- 16:09Speaker 1: with Slimon Crafer kind of stepping in, we get a
- 16:11Speaker 1: bit more clarification on things.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, where That one was weird too, because the
- 16:17Speaker 3: air bag had gone off in Mark's leathers when he crashed,
- 16:20Speaker 3: and then apparently when he picked the bike back up,
- 16:22Speaker 3: because these things are not light, as you know, when
- 16:24Speaker 3: he picked the bike back up, it started to pull,
- 16:27Speaker 3: and I'm doing a visual demonstration, which I realized is
- 16:29Speaker 3: useless on a podcast. But as he picked the bike up,
- 16:33Speaker 3: the zip started to come down because the air bag
- 16:35Speaker 3: had been inflated inside the suit. So once those zips
- 16:37Speaker 3: get loosened the first time you pop up out from
- 16:40Speaker 3: behind the bubble and break with all the forces coming
- 16:43Speaker 3: through the front of the bike. Of course, once the
- 16:45Speaker 3: zip is slightly undone, it's going to keep coming undone.
- 16:48Speaker 3: I kept thinking back to that, and I'm trying to
- 16:50Speaker 3: remember the year here. It was at twenty one, the
- 16:52Speaker 3: year with Quatarero at Catalunya, where his suit was basically
- 16:57Speaker 3: three quarters of the way undone. There's chest protectors flying
- 16:59Speaker 3: around because it's Fabio, who never wears a shirt anyway,
- 17:02Speaker 3: it was kind of not that unusual, but it wasn't
- 17:04Speaker 3: quite as bad as that. But I did have memories
- 17:06Speaker 3: of that, and quae Roh did take a penalty that
- 17:08Speaker 3: day as well, so there was a big going on
- 17:11Speaker 3: in the back end of that race, as there usually
- 17:13Speaker 3: is with Mark Marquez, but that was one that seemed
- 17:15Speaker 3: to slip through, and look, it didn't change anyone's world
- 17:18Speaker 3: that he finished eleventh, I guess, but yeah, there were
- 17:20Speaker 3: a few things going on for him at the end
- 17:22Speaker 3: of that race.
- 17:22Speaker 1: There was a lot going on for Mark this weekend.
- 17:26Speaker 1: But let's touch on Joge Martin. We spoke about Pecko
- 17:29Speaker 1: for me this weekend. He was so aggressive from the
- 17:33Speaker 1: get go, from the line into that turn one.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Thinking back to that sprint.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Where he pushed himself and peco wide, you can just
- 17:39Speaker 1: tell that he was doing whatever he could to get
- 17:42Speaker 1: out there first and control the race.
- 17:45Speaker 3: It's interesting in the last year. I think this is
- 17:49Speaker 3: where he's been a beneficiary of being in a title
- 17:52Speaker 3: fight now because I think last year he wasn't riding
- 17:55Speaker 3: like he instinctively rides towards the end of the season
- 17:57Speaker 3: because he was trailing Banyaia and he was writing to
- 18:00Speaker 3: not make mistakes, and an aggressive Joey Martin is an
- 18:05Speaker 3: effective Joge Martin. This is how he got the lead
- 18:08Speaker 3: in the first place. And he kind of said this
- 18:10Speaker 3: on Sunday, he said, I need to continue to be aggressive.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I need to continue to be myself because that's what
- 18:17Speaker 3: got me here. And I understand that after having gone
- 18:20Speaker 3: through it. Tried it the other way last year, it
- 18:22Speaker 3: didn't work. But what's so interesting with him this year
- 18:25Speaker 3: is you mentioned the aggression and you know, particularly the sprint,
- 18:27Speaker 3: it's like I am coming through, you can decide whether
- 18:29Speaker 3: to have the accident with me or not. I thought
- 18:32Speaker 3: that was pretty telling and that he's clearly marked out
- 18:34Speaker 3: his store now he's going to be super aggressive. But
- 18:37Speaker 3: you've got this crazy consistency with him now. And so
- 18:41Speaker 3: he finished second in the sprint, and he finished second
- 18:43Speaker 3: in the Grand Prix. That's fifteen second place finishes this year.
- 18:47Speaker 3: So he said, twenty eight podiums in thirty six starts.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Fifteen of those twenty eight podiums have been second. And
- 18:54Speaker 3: so for me, that's the evolution of Martine in that Yeah,
- 18:56Speaker 3: he's still the super fast guy over one lap. He's
- 18:59Speaker 3: the guy you'd predict poll but pretty much anywhere, and
- 19:02Speaker 3: he's got that intent at the first lap of races.
- 19:05Speaker 3: But there's also a bit of a wiser Martine. Now
- 19:08Speaker 3: it's like, if I can't win, I'm going to do
- 19:11Speaker 3: the next best thing. And you look at the number
- 19:13Speaker 3: of wins that each rider has got over the course
- 19:15Speaker 3: of the season. Vanyay has won nine races nine Grand
- 19:18Speaker 3: Prix this year, more than he's ever won in a
- 19:21Speaker 3: single season, and yet he still trails in the championship
- 19:23Speaker 3: because when Martin can't win, he's right there. And if
- 19:27Speaker 3: he wins this championship, ironically, for a guy who's probably
- 19:29Speaker 3: the fastest one lap rider in Motor GP, if he
- 19:32Speaker 3: wins this championship, it's not going to be because he's
- 19:34Speaker 3: quicker than Peco Vannoan races, because he hasn't been. It's
- 19:37Speaker 3: going to be because he's more consistent and he's made
- 19:40Speaker 3: fewer mistakes. So he's got to tread that tightrope now
- 19:44Speaker 3: of Thailand was different, right, because he couldn't seal the
- 19:48Speaker 3: championship in Thailand, he can seal the championship this weekend
- 19:51Speaker 3: in Malaysia. I think it's unlikely, but it's possible. How's
- 19:55Speaker 3: that going to change the approach? Because there's two schools
- 19:58Speaker 3: of thought here, Right, you can go even more aggressive
- 20:01Speaker 3: because it's like, well, if I make a mistake here,
- 20:03Speaker 3: it's not going to cost me the title. I can
- 20:05Speaker 3: absolutely go for it. I've got two match points here,
- 20:08Speaker 3: Let's have a massive swing at the first one and
- 20:10Speaker 3: see what happens. But then if it comes down to
- 20:13Speaker 3: the last race and that GAP's a little bit smaller.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Then how do you stay true to yourself and be
- 20:20Speaker 3: aggressive balancing that with but I don't have any room
- 20:23Speaker 3: to maneuver now. So psychologically these next three weeks are
- 20:27Speaker 3: so interesting for him because Banya I can say, well,
- 20:30Speaker 3: I know how to win World Championships. I've done it
- 20:32Speaker 3: twice already. One year I was chasing Quatrero down. The
- 20:35Speaker 3: other year I had the advantage. Martine probably thinks he's
- 20:39Speaker 3: got the speed to do it, and he's certainly got
- 20:40Speaker 3: the points advantage. But until you've done it, it's not real, right,
- 20:45Speaker 3: And so can you back yourself and stay true to
- 20:47Speaker 3: your instincts when there's that much on the line. I
- 20:50Speaker 3: think this weekend you'll be mega aggressive. A'ts the paying
- 20:52Speaker 3: again because you get two swings at this If it
- 20:55Speaker 3: comes down to the last round. Oh boy. Psychologically, I've
- 20:59Speaker 3: got no doubt the guy's fast enough to win a
- 21:01Speaker 3: World championship. But what's going through his head that's going
- 21:04Speaker 3: to be the super interesting bit.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And then just thinking about about what we were talking
- 21:08Speaker 1: about Peco earlier and how he doesn't like where there's
- 21:12Speaker 1: variables in a race we can We're in Malaysia, we're
- 21:14Speaker 1: in Asia where there can be storms and whatnot in
- 21:17Speaker 1: the afternoon it's hot. Valencia, I feel like is more
- 21:20Speaker 1: of a circuit that suits Peco's style because he generally
- 21:23Speaker 1: knows what he's going to get there. Malaysia we don't know.
- 21:26Speaker 1: So this is where I feel like Joge could be
- 21:28Speaker 1: a lot.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Stronger this weekend than Peco.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Well, and also because he's got less to lose, you know,
- 21:32Speaker 3: bang your eyes on the tightrope now in that Yeah,
- 21:35Speaker 3: he's seventeen points behind, so it's going to take a
- 21:37Speaker 3: lot for Martin to win the title this weekend, but
- 21:39Speaker 3: he mathematically can do it, where Peco has to force
- 21:42Speaker 3: it to a fine round. And so yeah, I mean
- 21:45Speaker 3: you don't need to watch if you go to Kuala Lumpu,
- 21:47Speaker 3: you can just sort of look up at the sky
- 21:48Speaker 3: and see the sky's darkening. Oh it's about four o'clock
- 21:50Speaker 3: he comes to Thunderstork. It's the way it works up there.
- 21:54Speaker 3: So yeah, like I mean, it's there's so much of
- 21:58Speaker 3: this is going to be played between in the years
- 22:00Speaker 3: of these two riders, as much as there is between
- 22:02Speaker 3: the lines of the racetrack, because I think each of
- 22:05Speaker 3: them have different strengths. That's what makes this so interesting. Yeah,
- 22:07Speaker 3: they're on the same bike, but they approach it from
- 22:10Speaker 3: such different angles, And it's who can be truest to
- 22:14Speaker 3: themselves over the course of the next two weekends, but
- 22:17Speaker 3: who's the person that can adapt to a changing situation?
- 22:20Speaker 3: And I still I know about you. I still feel
- 22:23Speaker 3: this is a championship that Martin is going to win
- 22:27Speaker 3: or lose more than Peco wins. And I know that
- 22:29Speaker 3: sounds like semantics, but don't you agree. I think there's
- 22:31Speaker 3: a psychological element to the whole Joge Martin experience where
- 22:35Speaker 3: we might look back at this championship and say, how
- 22:38Speaker 3: did this guy lose this? If he doesn't win it?
- 22:41Speaker 3: Whereas you know Banyai, I think there's less variability in
- 22:45Speaker 3: the way Banyai operates. Martin can go out and win
- 22:48Speaker 3: this thing, but equally he could also throw at the bin.
- 22:50Speaker 3: And I think that's what's going to be so interesting
- 22:51Speaker 3: about these next two weeks.
- 22:53Speaker 1: But also is this Juai Martin's last chance at a
- 22:57Speaker 1: World Championships title fight for a couple of years. We
- 23:01Speaker 1: don't know how that progress with a Prillia is going
- 23:03Speaker 1: to be right, but he is going to a Prillier.
- 23:05Speaker 2: He's not sticking on a Ducatti who has just one
- 23:07Speaker 2: the last multiple years.
- 23:09Speaker 1: So yeah, there's a lot more weighing on his shoulders
- 23:11Speaker 1: with that, as he could be going to a bike
- 23:13Speaker 1: where he is inconsistently up the front in the following seasons.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely right. I mean this might not be his
- 23:19Speaker 3: best chance, it might be his last, and you don't
- 23:21Speaker 3: want to be super peessivistic for a Prillier. But we
- 23:23Speaker 3: don't get a rule change in Motor GP until twenty
- 23:26Speaker 3: twenty seven. So given the advantage that Ducati has over
- 23:30Speaker 3: everybody else, who's to say that they won't retain that
- 23:34Speaker 3: advantage or similar for the next couple of seasons. And
- 23:36Speaker 3: Martine's off to a Prillier now, for all his talent
- 23:39Speaker 3: and the goodwill in the world, we know where a
- 23:41Speaker 3: Prillier are at the moment. On a good day, they're
- 23:43Speaker 3: fighting for a top six in a Grand Prix. Now,
- 23:45Speaker 3: I think Martine's a considerable step above Averrikvidyalez and Alaisha
- 23:48Speaker 3: Spago and the track house guys when they're not injured
- 23:51Speaker 3: or falling off. So yeah, he'll drag a Prillier closer
- 23:55Speaker 3: to the front. But there's very different than building a
- 23:58Speaker 3: championship campaign where you ending ninety percent of it on
- 24:01Speaker 3: the podium because you're on an awesome bike doing a
- 24:03Speaker 3: fantastic job with it. So that's another one of these
- 24:06Speaker 3: little subplots that I was talking about before, in that
- 24:08Speaker 3: you know, this might be his best chance, but also
- 24:11Speaker 3: in the foreseeable future might be his last chance. And
- 24:13Speaker 3: that's just another thing to add to this mix that
- 24:17Speaker 3: I don't about you. I can't wait for these last
- 24:18Speaker 3: two races because we're going to learn so much about
- 24:21Speaker 3: each of these guys. I don't think we're going to
- 24:23Speaker 3: learn whether they can ride motorcycles well or not, because
- 24:26Speaker 3: the standard is so high with these guys. And Banyai
- 24:29Speaker 3: said this on Sunday, like the ability to get the
- 24:33Speaker 3: performances out of this amazing bike at this level has
- 24:36Speaker 3: been brilliant the entire season. But psychologically this becomes super
- 24:41Speaker 3: interesting from here. And when you've got someone as mischievous
- 24:44Speaker 3: as Mark Market is sticking his nose into proceedings as well,
- 24:46Speaker 3: it just makes it even more interesting, doesn't it.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Talking about mischievous little rascals, Let's talk about patri or Corossa.
- 24:54Speaker 2: That's a good little segue into.
- 24:55Speaker 3: That fantastic segue.
- 24:57Speaker 1: I think that this weekend was awesome to see Costa
- 25:00Speaker 1: winning in the wet And there was a big deal
- 25:02Speaker 1: made on online about how Mark Marquees was sorry he
- 25:06Speaker 1: didn't win on the wet he was on the podium
- 25:07Speaker 1: third place, but how Mark Marquees was on the podium
- 25:10Speaker 1: in the wet in his rookie year as well. And
- 25:12Speaker 1: this is the question I want to post to you now, Matt.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Do you think Pedro LaCosta still has that chance to
- 25:18Speaker 1: win a race in his rookie year or is it
- 25:20Speaker 1: purely this is just a Peco and Mark Joe Martin
- 25:24Speaker 1: or Mark Marquez situation.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Where yeah, yeah, it's hard, isn't it. I mean, I
- 25:28Speaker 3: think it's the latter. I'd I'd be shocked if a
- 25:31Speaker 3: katm was able to win these last couple of races.
- 25:33Speaker 3: But I don't think that's a blight necessarily on a Costa,
- 25:37Speaker 3: because we've seen what he's done as a rookie. You know,
- 25:40Speaker 3: this guy's so good that we do sometimes forget that
- 25:42Speaker 3: he is twenty years old. He's got so little running
- 25:45Speaker 3: in wet conditions, and you know, he just come off
- 25:48Speaker 3: Japan where he had two DNFs and then Australia where
- 25:51Speaker 3: he crashed in his sprint and we talked about how
- 25:54Speaker 3: awful that shoulder is injury was Phoebe Philip either than
- 25:57Speaker 3: I'm rubbing my shoulders thinking about it because it's making
- 25:59Speaker 3: mind sore thinking about it. He comes out after not
- 26:02Speaker 3: such great qualifying and gets on the podium and he's
- 26:06Speaker 3: first wet motor GP Grand Prix race, like unbelievable and
- 26:09Speaker 3: also not surprising because we know how good this kid is.
- 26:12Speaker 3: But Jizy handled it well. But in terms of your question, look,
- 26:17Speaker 3: there'd have to be some super craziness with like a
- 26:20Speaker 3: guy taking each other out at the front tour, just
- 26:22Speaker 3: like the mother of all thunderstorms at Malaysia, which is possible.
- 26:25Speaker 3: But I find it hard to think he could win
- 26:27Speaker 3: a race as a rookie. But I don't think that's
- 26:29Speaker 3: any blight necessarily on how good he's been this year,
- 26:32Speaker 3: because he's probably going to finish as the best non
- 26:34Speaker 3: decatty rider in a championship, him or Brad Binder. In
- 26:38Speaker 3: a season where Dukatti has won every race but one,
- 26:41Speaker 3: it's been a phenomenal rookie season. I love the fact
- 26:44Speaker 3: that he handled the conditions so well, and there's a
- 26:46Speaker 3: fair bit of grit in there as well, because you know,
- 26:49Speaker 3: it was eight days before that Grand Prix that he
- 26:51Speaker 3: really hurt himself at Philip Island and he's back on
- 26:54Speaker 3: a circuit he's not ridden a Motor GP bike on
- 26:57Speaker 3: on a bike that's not really a front running bike,
- 26:59Speaker 3: and then char un through and won a podium in
- 27:01Speaker 3: those last couple of laps. I mean, it's been one
- 27:03Speaker 3: of the better rookie seasons we've seen for a while,
- 27:05Speaker 3: and that was just another feather in his cap.
- 27:07Speaker 2: I think, yeah, I agree with you.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I'm excited to see him next year, where I feel
- 27:11Speaker 1: like he's got that year under his belt and he's
- 27:13Speaker 1: going to be a comfortably he's on. He's the factory rider,
- 27:16Speaker 1: working alongside the factory, understanding the bike, developing that a
- 27:19Speaker 1: lot more. I think next year is going to be
- 27:21Speaker 1: that pieced of resistance on his stepping stone into Moto GP.
- 27:25Speaker 1: But before we move on to our Malaysia preview, we
- 27:29Speaker 1: have to talk about the lower categories.
- 27:31Speaker 2: N Less obviously talk about Moto two.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Iagua finally wrapped up that Moto two championship and in
- 27:38Speaker 1: my opinion well deserved. We're talking about consistency earlier with
- 27:41Speaker 1: Johe Martin. I feel like I is also just consistency
- 27:44Speaker 1: is king every weekend he is there or thereabouts right.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Oh yeah. Massive props to to Burner GPS social media.
- 27:51Speaker 3: I came, I saw I conquered, very good, very impressed
- 27:56Speaker 3: with that on Sunday. But that look, he's been just
- 27:59Speaker 3: so he's always there and I don't know if he's
- 28:02Speaker 3: the outright fastest guy I Motor two and he's led
- 28:05Speaker 3: a very limited number of laps for guards White a
- 28:07Speaker 3: World championship. But that was a series this year. That
- 28:10Speaker 3: was a category this year where it was crying out
- 28:12Speaker 3: for an adult in the room to step up and
- 28:14Speaker 3: actually take control of it, because you'd have guys winning
- 28:16Speaker 3: races and then you wouldn't see them for three weeks,
- 28:18Speaker 3: and you know, there was a points like, oh, geez,
- 28:20Speaker 3: Jake Dixon's going. Well, then you go, oh, Jake Dixon
- 28:22Speaker 3: hasn't scored for five straight weekends. And it was one
- 28:25Speaker 3: of those really weird seasons where Agura was the constant.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Other guys would come in star for a couple of races, disappear,
- 28:32Speaker 3: someone else will come in do the same thing. He
- 28:34Speaker 3: was always there and it's a really methodical way of
- 28:39Speaker 3: working that He's going to a factory that is going
- 28:42Speaker 3: to need some calm heads, because that's a really interesting
- 28:46Speaker 3: and prilier lineup next year where you've got Martine Betzekia,
- 28:48Speaker 3: ral Fernandez with Agura, so a lot of unproven guys,
- 28:52Speaker 3: a lot of guys who don't know that machinery. I
- 28:54Speaker 3: think he's going to be a pretty solid motor GP
- 28:57Speaker 3: rider because I think he's going to be he's fast
- 28:59Speaker 3: enough to bet, but I think he's methodical enough to
- 29:02Speaker 3: maybe not get spooked early on in his career. It's like,
- 29:05Speaker 3: oh boy, then a bit off the back here. He'll
- 29:08Speaker 3: be a guy that the difference between March next year
- 29:10Speaker 3: and November you'll see a really distinct curve with him.
- 29:14Speaker 3: He strikes me as a guy who might be a
- 29:15Speaker 3: bit slow to the boil, but I think he's going
- 29:17Speaker 3: to be pretty effective as a motor GP rider because
- 29:19Speaker 3: he methodically works his way through situations. And I mean
- 29:23Speaker 3: even that race on Sunday at Breram was much the
- 29:26Speaker 3: same thing. He got to the position he needed to
- 29:28Speaker 3: get to. He doesn't beat himself and he just methodically
- 29:31Speaker 3: goes about his business so very well deserved title, And
- 29:35Speaker 3: isn't it funny, like, of all the categories this year,
- 29:37Speaker 3: it's Motor GP the one that is undecided where we've
- 29:40Speaker 3: had this super predictable year, whereas Tocati's winning everything, but
- 29:43Speaker 3: we still don't have a champion yet. Yeah, in the
- 29:45Speaker 3: other two categories we have world champions. And I don't
- 29:48Speaker 3: know whether this is on your run sheet, but I
- 29:50Speaker 3: just want to slightly go off tangent here and talk
- 29:52Speaker 3: about other categories because David Alonso I think we've got
- 29:55Speaker 3: to talk about that, because he won his twelfth race
- 29:58Speaker 3: for the season in Time Island and broke that absolutely
- 30:02Speaker 3: crazy Valentino Rossi record that's been going since nineteen ninety seven.
- 30:06Speaker 3: Anytime you're breaking Valentino Rossi records when you're eighteen years
- 30:09Speaker 3: old at Boatsworld, is that well?
- 30:13Speaker 1: Hashtag baby goat is what is trending from Donner and
- 30:17Speaker 1: Moto GP, And as weird as it sounds, it is
- 30:21Speaker 1: so accurate because I think we're witnessing greatness in someone
- 30:24Speaker 1: and it's so easy to just jump on that Highe
- 30:26Speaker 1: train when you see someone who's dominated all year and
- 30:29Speaker 1: who knows he might go to Moto two and be nowhere,
- 30:31Speaker 1: But I just have a feeling he's the Pedrocossa, He's
- 30:34Speaker 1: the Mark muk As, he is a Valentino Rossi. He's
- 30:36Speaker 1: this talent that just seems to handle situations really well
- 30:41Speaker 1: for someone who's so young. So watching his journey this
- 30:44Speaker 1: year incredible.
- 30:46Speaker 2: You see why he is world champion because those proto
- 30:48Speaker 2: three races.
- 30:49Speaker 1: We talk about it all the time, how it is
- 30:51Speaker 1: some of the best racings. Those guys are going at
- 30:54Speaker 1: it for the entire race, non stop, the battles, the passes,
- 30:58Speaker 1: same thing, consistency. He has been there or there about
- 31:01Speaker 1: all year and handled everything with grace.
- 31:05Speaker 3: My unintentional comedy moment of the entire weekend. I'm not
- 31:08Speaker 3: sure if you caught this. So it's Moto three qualifying
- 31:11Speaker 3: and everyone's waiting for him to go out to do
- 31:14Speaker 3: his lap in Q two because they all got to
- 31:15Speaker 3: follow him. So he pulled out of the pit box
- 31:18Speaker 3: and saw there were literally twelve guys looking at him
- 31:21Speaker 3: waiting to go out to get a toe. So he
- 31:23Speaker 3: sat there and sat there because he had a decent
- 31:24Speaker 3: grid position, and then deliberately went out to do the
- 31:28Speaker 3: outlap before the final lap, knowing that the checkered flag
- 31:31Speaker 3: was going to fall before anyone started their final lap.
- 31:33Speaker 3: So it's like, cool, you could all sit behind me
- 31:35Speaker 3: and I'll tell you around, and none of you get
- 31:37Speaker 3: to do a lap at the end because the checkered
- 31:38Speaker 3: flag's already fallen. And I love the fact that he's
- 31:42Speaker 3: recognized it and gone, all right, then you guys can
- 31:44Speaker 3: have some of this, And so we ended up with
- 31:46Speaker 3: Joel Kelso and Pole, which is awesome for Australia. But
- 31:48Speaker 3: there were ten guys who never got a lap in
- 31:50Speaker 3: at the end of Q two and then all looked
- 31:52Speaker 3: at each other and gesticulated and waved at each other,
- 31:55Speaker 3: and Alonso's just grinning under his helmet, saying, well, that'll
- 31:57Speaker 3: teach you to sit in the pits and wait for
- 31:59Speaker 3: me next time. But it was really, really funny. No,
- 32:02Speaker 3: he knew exactly what he was doing, and none of
- 32:04Speaker 3: the others cotton onto it. It was too late, So
- 32:06Speaker 3: I enjoyed that it was good fun.
- 32:08Speaker 1: I don't know about you, and this might be like
- 32:11Speaker 1: a controversial opinion. I freaking hate when they do the
- 32:15Speaker 1: towing in the RBS and they will sit behind each
- 32:18Speaker 1: other and It's like, isn't I get why they do it,
- 32:22Speaker 1: but why would you not just go out and do
- 32:24Speaker 1: a lap with a clean track in front of you
- 32:26Speaker 1: where there's no qualms or anything that could possibly hinder
- 32:30Speaker 1: it apart from someone crashing further up.
- 32:32Speaker 2: That's out of your control.
- 32:33Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, it looks optically it's ridiculous. So you see
- 32:36Speaker 3: guys sitting there, it's like, well, you are we motorcycle
- 32:39Speaker 3: racist here or are we just know what are we doing?
- 32:40Speaker 3: Playing follow the leader? I hate that the safety aspect
- 32:43Speaker 3: of guys pulling out on the last sector and basically
- 32:46Speaker 3: at walking pace while they wait for the fast guy
- 32:49Speaker 3: to go through. There should just be far strict penalties
- 32:52Speaker 3: with that sort of thing because A it's dangerous. B.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I think it sets a really bad precedent for lower
- 32:58Speaker 3: category series because this is the World Championship, right. If
- 33:01Speaker 3: you allow this sort of stuff in the World Championship,
- 33:03Speaker 3: then what a feeder series in other countries supposed to do.
- 33:05Speaker 3: You're setting a terrible example for kids coming through. It's like, oh,
- 33:08Speaker 3: so this is how you qualify. It's like, no, this
- 33:11Speaker 3: is how you get hurt. So there's an element to
- 33:14Speaker 3: that that I can't stand and it also just looks
- 33:16Speaker 3: a bit crap. Let's be perfectly honest, like, go out
- 33:18Speaker 3: do the lap, and I did kind of like that.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Alonso was kind of subtly baking a point here. It's like, well,
- 33:23Speaker 3: if you'd like to go and ruin your own qualify,
- 33:25Speaker 3: because then be my guest, I'm not going anywhere. It
- 33:28Speaker 3: was kind of fun, it.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Was exciting, but yeah, let's look about a positive note.
- 33:32Speaker 1: You mentioned David Alonzo with his records that he's broke.
- 33:35Speaker 1: I grew back to that he's the first Asia Talent
- 33:38Speaker 1: Cup writer to win a championship and the first Japanese
- 33:41Speaker 1: writer since Iyama.
- 33:44Speaker 2: And I can't remember the year. I want to say
- 33:45Speaker 2: two thousand and No, was.
- 33:48Speaker 3: It two nine, two thousand and nine in the two
- 33:51Speaker 3: fifty c C category, but when that was still a thing.
- 33:54Speaker 3: But I love the Asian Talent Cup thing because it's
- 33:58Speaker 3: another pathway to world championship that doesn't involve Italy or Spain.
- 34:02Speaker 3: And I think that's really important to show that if
- 34:06Speaker 3: you have the talent and the backing and you can
- 34:08Speaker 3: get yourself in the right series, you can be a
- 34:10Speaker 3: world champion from anywhere, because that's what this is supposed
- 34:13Speaker 3: to be is a World Championship, and you know, great,
- 34:16Speaker 3: if the Spanish and the Italian riders are the best
- 34:18Speaker 3: in the class, then fine, but it's also good to
- 34:20Speaker 3: have another sort of portal to get through to the
- 34:22Speaker 3: World Championship and be successful. So big tick for that series.
- 34:26Speaker 3: And like I said, I think he's going to surprise
- 34:27Speaker 3: a few people next year because you know, might not
- 34:30Speaker 3: have the stariest CV going around, and you know, he's
- 34:33Speaker 3: not exactly a media darling. His English is still a
- 34:35Speaker 3: bit spotty, and he's a bit more sort of shy
- 34:37Speaker 3: and not super confident with it like a lot of
- 34:39Speaker 3: the Japanese can be. But I think he's going to
- 34:41Speaker 3: be pretty decent in Motor GP next year.
- 34:44Speaker 1: And then speaking about the Asia Talent Cup, obviously a
- 34:46Speaker 1: lot of our Ossie riders go through that, which is
- 34:48Speaker 1: awesome for us in this part of the world.
- 34:51Speaker 2: But job kelso.
- 34:53Speaker 1: First Ossie to have a Moto three podium since Jack
- 34:56Speaker 1: Miller in over was it like ten years or something.
- 34:59Speaker 1: So there's all these records that have been broken by
- 35:01Speaker 1: these young guys. It's making it so exciting across the
- 35:04Speaker 1: whole Moto GP board, not just in that Premier Class.
- 35:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I completely agreed. I think Joel was just excitedly
- 35:10Speaker 3: fine they got a watch for qualifying on poles, I
- 35:13Speaker 3: think he'd bit on the front row like seven times
- 35:15Speaker 3: or something, so he kept getting so close. So one
- 35:17Speaker 3: of his crew members actually said, finally you got the watch,
- 35:19Speaker 3: which is actually quite funny. But look, he we know
- 35:23Speaker 3: he's been there and thereabouts the entire season, particularly good
- 35:26Speaker 3: in qualifying. It was a bit of a weird race
- 35:28Speaker 3: because of the conditions, and obviously finished seventh and in
- 35:31Speaker 3: the pack that he was in. But yeah, another good
- 35:34Speaker 3: weekend for him. And yeah, finally he can look at
- 35:36Speaker 3: his left wrist and tell the time and not have
- 35:38Speaker 3: to look at his phone anymore. So that's exciting.
- 35:40Speaker 2: That is exciting.
- 35:41Speaker 1: And before we move on, I know we've been teasing Malaysia,
- 35:44Speaker 1: There's one other thing that we have to talk about, Matt,
- 35:45Speaker 1: is that weird pit lean entry crash between Arbilino and
- 35:50Speaker 1: vander Gorberg in Moto TiO.
- 35:53Speaker 2: What was up with that?
- 35:54Speaker 1: Because there was a Marshall running, there was Arbilina trying
- 35:58Speaker 1: to pick up his bike like right in the middle.
- 36:00Speaker 2: It just it was a mess waiting to happen.
- 36:03Speaker 3: Massively so, and it's kind of a function of the
- 36:06Speaker 3: pit lane entry. So weird at that track because it
- 36:09Speaker 3: basically runs the entire length of that back straight into
- 36:13Speaker 3: that last right hander. So and you're not obviously on
- 36:16Speaker 3: the speed limit at that point, so as you're coming
- 36:18Speaker 3: you can quite easily crash in that pit lane entrance
- 36:20Speaker 3: because you're off the circuit but you're not beholden to
- 36:22Speaker 3: the pit lane speed limit, and there's a bit of
- 36:25Speaker 3: a The problem was that Arbillino crashing his bike and
- 36:28Speaker 3: was trying to get a broken bike back to the pits,
- 36:32Speaker 3: where he probably should have just got off the thing
- 36:33Speaker 3: and come back on the back of a scooter. So
- 36:35Speaker 3: that was partly the problem, because you've got marshals on
- 36:37Speaker 3: the track and you're on the outside of a fast corner.
- 36:41Speaker 3: There's other guys trying to get into pit lane, and
- 36:43Speaker 3: it was it just took too long to resolve that situation.
- 36:47Speaker 3: You're thinking, geez, I hope they get away with this.
- 36:49Speaker 3: I hate seeing marshals on the side of racetracks when
- 36:52Speaker 3: they're live, and so, you know, not great for Billino
- 36:55Speaker 3: trying to get a broken bike back to the pits.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Van and Gilberg. You can sort of see how he's
- 37:00Speaker 3: just seen the bike and tried to get it stopped.
- 37:03Speaker 3: There's almost like a bit tunnel vision with that. There's
- 37:05Speaker 3: a marshal who had to jump out of the way.
- 37:07Speaker 3: That could have been so nasty that accident. So they
- 37:09Speaker 3: both got penalized for it. But moral of the story,
- 37:12Speaker 3: kids is don't try and ride crashed bikes back to
- 37:14Speaker 3: the pits. Sister, save that for another day and play
- 37:16Speaker 3: the safety card.
- 37:17Speaker 2: I think, right, Malaysian Grand Prix. Finally, let's move on
- 37:21Speaker 2: to our next race.
- 37:23Speaker 1: And so looking at last year, we had Pego Banyaya
- 37:27Speaker 1: on pole and our podium was an Abashanini, Alex Marquez
- 37:32Speaker 1: and Peco Bangyaya. So no Warhe Martine in that mix.
- 37:36Speaker 1: But you wrote an article for Fox sports dot com
- 37:40Speaker 1: slash Motorsport, and you were talking about how the seasons
- 37:43Speaker 1: have been playing out in previous years. What's your take
- 37:47Speaker 1: going into this weekend. I know we've alluded to it
- 37:49Speaker 1: a little bit, but I want to hear from you.
- 37:52Speaker 3: This is just I knew what I was getting into
- 37:54Speaker 3: when I started doing this. I thought to myself, hmm,
- 37:57Speaker 3: how many times do we get championships that are still
- 37:59Speaker 3: alive with two rounds to go, which is where we
- 38:01Speaker 3: are right now, and one thing led to another, and
- 38:04Speaker 3: several hours passed and I went down fourteen rabbit holes,
- 38:07Speaker 3: and so basically in the last twenty years, I've decided
- 38:11Speaker 3: to go back twenty years. Ten of the last twenty
- 38:13Speaker 3: years have come down to the last two races, So
- 38:16Speaker 3: we've had ten titles decided before the last two races.
- 38:19Speaker 3: Of those ten titles that have been alive for the
- 38:22Speaker 3: last two races, four of them got decided in the
- 38:25Speaker 3: second last round, So six title deciders in the last
- 38:29Speaker 3: twenty years. Interestingly, this is the third year in a
- 38:32Speaker 3: row that we've come down to potentially having a last
- 38:35Speaker 3: round title decider. But the interesting thing for me is
- 38:37Speaker 3: that of those six championships that went down to the
- 38:41Speaker 3: very very final round, it's the guy that's in the
- 38:43Speaker 3: league that's won the championship every time. And there's been
- 38:46Speaker 3: some mad ones in there, because there was two thousand
- 38:50Speaker 3: and thirteen Marquez's rookie year, which was one of the
- 38:54Speaker 3: great title deciders because Jorge Lorenzo needed Marquees to finish
- 38:58Speaker 3: fourth and got to the front of the race slowed
- 39:00Speaker 3: down so much that the entire pack caught up behind
- 39:03Speaker 3: Marquez and started roughing him up, which was just completely
- 39:06Speaker 3: bastardrew by Lorenzo. I kind of appreciated. It's like, I'm
- 39:09Speaker 3: going to be at the front, but I'm going to
- 39:10Speaker 3: be so slow that there's all these other guys that
- 39:12Speaker 3: might trip over Marqure. So that was fun when that happened.
- 39:15Speaker 3: And then the maddest one of all is a race
- 39:17Speaker 3: that your brother was actually in in two thousand and
- 39:18Speaker 3: six in Valencia, where the championship lead actually changed hands
- 39:22Speaker 3: twice in the last two races. We had that bizarre
- 39:26Speaker 3: race in Portugal where a rookie called Danny Pedrosa took
- 39:29Speaker 3: Nicki Hayden out of that race in Estuaria when Hayden
- 39:33Speaker 3: was leading the championship Valentino Rossi probably thought he was
- 39:37Speaker 3: going to win that race and lost by two thousandths
- 39:39Speaker 3: of a second on the line to Tony Elias, his
- 39:42Speaker 3: only Motor GP win. So Rossi had an eight point
- 39:45Speaker 3: lead going into Valencia, took Pole and then fell off
- 39:48Speaker 3: in that race at Valencia, pretty much right in front
- 39:51Speaker 3: of Cruis actually if I remember rightly. And then Nicky
- 39:53Speaker 3: Hayden finished third and won that World Championship. That was
- 39:56Speaker 3: absolutely remarkable. So look, the guy who who's led the
- 40:00Speaker 3: championship with two rounds to go is generally converted. There's
- 40:03Speaker 3: one asterisk to this, and you know where I'm going
- 40:05Speaker 3: with this, because it's we love talking about this. We're
- 40:07Speaker 3: going to Malaysia. Malaysia twenty and fifteen. Valentino Rossi left
- 40:12Speaker 3: that race as the World Championship leader. He also started
- 40:15Speaker 3: the FINALI at Valencia at the back of the grid
- 40:17Speaker 3: because of a certain incident with Mark Marquez that I'm
- 40:19Speaker 3: sure nobody listening to this podcast has any idea what
- 40:22Speaker 3: I'm talking about. And of course juhelern Soo wins that race,
- 40:25Speaker 3: and the only time he led that championship for the
- 40:27Speaker 3: entire year was after the last race in twenty fifteen,
- 40:30Speaker 3: so that's the only one that's come down to the
- 40:33Speaker 3: wire where the leads actually changed hands in the last round.
- 40:36Speaker 3: So I thoroughly enjoyed going down a nice YouTube rabbit
- 40:40Speaker 3: hole and reminding himself, oh yeah, that happened. That was fun.
- 40:43Speaker 3: I didn't need to watch Malaysia twenty fifteen again. I
- 40:45Speaker 3: think it's burnt into my brain somewhere. But the point
- 40:49Speaker 3: being that Martine historically should convert from here because he's
- 40:54Speaker 3: the guy that's got the high ground with two rounds
- 40:55Speaker 3: to go, because history tells us, if you've got the
- 40:58Speaker 3: lead with two rounds to go, you're going to win,
- 41:00Speaker 3: with the exception of Malaysia twenty fifty, the exception of
- 41:02Speaker 3: all exceptions. So I'm sure not that we need any
- 41:06Speaker 3: not that we need any invitation to talk about Malaysia
- 41:08Speaker 3: twenty fifteen, but it might even get more of an
- 41:10Speaker 3: airing this weekend than it normally does. So I'm sure
- 41:13Speaker 3: downa are rubbing their hands together for the social media content.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Well, let's just kind of keep going down that rabbit hole.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Bit off to a side a little bit. Andrea in
- 41:23Speaker 1: the Eanni his name, because there.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Is the thought it's been so long, it's.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Been so long.
- 41:29Speaker 1: But also, how does he come back into Moto GP
- 41:33Speaker 1: article you wrote all because he got a phone call
- 41:35Speaker 1: from his old mate Valentino Rossi.
- 41:38Speaker 3: It is bizarre, isn't it. So Look, we knew that
- 41:40Speaker 3: VR forty six we're going to need a replacement rider
- 41:42Speaker 3: because Fabio digit Antonio was going to opt out and
- 41:45Speaker 3: have his shoulder surgery ahead of next year. Big shout
- 41:48Speaker 3: to Digya by the way, fourth place at his last
- 41:50Speaker 3: two races before he goes for a shoulder operation with
- 41:52Speaker 3: Australia and Thailand. So awesome. Finished to a really good
- 41:55Speaker 3: season for him, and he's a guy that I'd be
- 41:58Speaker 3: putting some money on to feature very highly next years
- 42:00Speaker 3: World Championship. That's a separate podcast. But of all the
- 42:03Speaker 3: people they could have brought in to do this race
- 42:07Speaker 3: for V forty six, I think it was probably down
- 42:10Speaker 3: to two really, Nicolo Bulager and Andrea Andanoni. And Buliger
- 42:15Speaker 3: had made some noises like he's young and probably still
- 42:18Speaker 3: has aspirations of getting back to Moto GP or into
- 42:21Speaker 3: the World Championship, and I'm not sure he was that
- 42:24Speaker 3: keen on doing it unless he could test beforehand. And
- 42:26Speaker 3: with the way the calendaries you've got three races in
- 42:28Speaker 3: a row, there was going to be no testing for him.
- 42:30Speaker 3: So obviously World Superbikes has finished for the year. You Knowoni,
- 42:34Speaker 3: we know the story band initially for eighteen months for
- 42:38Speaker 3: failing a steroid test. Appealed the band, saying that he'd
- 42:41Speaker 3: eaten a piece of contaminated meat in Malaysia, of all places,
- 42:44Speaker 3: which is where we're going back to so vegan diet
- 42:47Speaker 3: for Andrea this weekend. I would have thought, but yeah,
- 42:50Speaker 3: and then of course he appealed that sentence saying that
- 42:53Speaker 3: he had accidentally taken this steroid because of some contaminated meat.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Wada looked at it and said, no, we don't like
- 42:59Speaker 3: that evidence and slapped him with a four year ban
- 43:02Speaker 3: because he wouldn't accept the eighteen month band. So this
- 43:05Speaker 3: is why we haven't seen Andrea Aroni on a World
- 43:07Speaker 3: Championship grid since twenty nineteen when he was with a Prillier.
- 43:11Speaker 3: He's thirty five years old now and this is really
- 43:15Speaker 3: a dou Cati aligned rider getting a free hit from
- 43:18Speaker 3: an old mate for one race. I don't think he'll
- 43:21Speaker 3: do Valencia simply because the post race test at Valencia
- 43:26Speaker 3: two days after that last GP, Mikaylee Piro is going
- 43:29Speaker 3: to be there anyway, so it makes no sense to
- 43:31Speaker 3: have Yunoni do that and then throw Piro on the
- 43:33Speaker 3: bike for the test. He may as well do both
- 43:35Speaker 3: given that he's going to be there. So this is
- 43:37Speaker 3: not some sort of you know, career comeback or something
- 43:39Speaker 3: for Yunoni. It's just a chance for a mate of
- 43:42Speaker 3: Valentino and Uccho saluci Us to do his last race
- 43:45Speaker 3: and go out on his terms. But super interesting because
- 43:48Speaker 3: you can say a lot of things about Yuanini, and
- 43:50Speaker 3: a lot of people have over the course of time,
- 43:52Speaker 3: but he was never slow. He was a little demotivated
- 43:56Speaker 3: from time to time, and I do remember him missing
- 43:58Speaker 3: a preseason test at Paying because his facelift hadn't healed properly.
- 44:03Speaker 3: So this is kind of the deal. And the look
- 44:04Speaker 3: on your face, I'm not sure you've heard that one before.
- 44:07Speaker 3: There's a lot of there's a lot going on with Andrea,
- 44:09Speaker 3: let's be perfectly honest, but the guy could never be
- 44:11Speaker 3: accused of being slow. So it'd be super interesting him
- 44:14Speaker 3: stepping back on a motor GP bike for the first
- 44:17Speaker 3: time in a really long time, and not just a
- 44:20Speaker 3: motor GP bike, a very very fast motor GP bike
- 44:23Speaker 3: that the previous rider ever finished in the top four
- 44:26Speaker 3: in the past two races. So that's another little subplot
- 44:29Speaker 3: for this weekend. Where does he fit in? Where how
- 44:32Speaker 3: long does it take him to get up to speed?
- 44:34Speaker 3: He's on the best bike in the Okay, it's a
- 44:35Speaker 3: GP twenty three, but he's on the best manufacturer in
- 44:38Speaker 3: the business. He might be taking some points off a
- 44:40Speaker 3: few people. If he gets he guess himself sorted this weekend.
- 44:43Speaker 3: But of all the people I thought that would be
- 44:46Speaker 3: back on the Motor GP grid, he was pretty close
- 44:48Speaker 3: to the bottom of my list after what had happened
- 44:51Speaker 3: five years ago.
- 44:52Speaker 2: I just like you.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Saw my face the whole facelift thing. For those who
- 44:57Speaker 1: don't know what Andrea Ian and He's been up to.
- 45:00Speaker 1: When he wasn't racing, he did feature on Italy's Dancing
- 45:03Speaker 1: with the Stars well, so he's.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Been a very busy man on and off track.
- 45:09Speaker 1: He is a character, and I think that's what's exciting
- 45:12Speaker 1: here is a character. There's been a lot of talk
- 45:15Speaker 1: and speculation and controversy, maybe because he's coming back in
- 45:20Speaker 1: and that's what Moto GP needs. Is exciting. All the
- 45:23Speaker 1: socials talking about Dre you know what, he's coming back.
- 45:25Speaker 2: People like he shouldn't have come back. They're like, yeah,
- 45:28Speaker 2: he's coming back to Moto GP. It's exciting.
- 45:31Speaker 1: It just adds to the other layer of what is
- 45:33Speaker 1: Malaysia gonna bring this weekend, probably some thunderstorms in the afternoon.
- 45:38Speaker 1: A man who's been on Dancing with the Stars and
- 45:40Speaker 1: recently Valentino ROSSI was on some Italian or Spanish TV
- 45:45Speaker 1: show talking about Jorge Lorenzo and Mark Marquez. So there
- 45:47Speaker 1: is stuff happening left right and censor, not just Peco
- 45:51Speaker 1: Banyaya and Jorge Martine with the hashtag rematch.
- 45:56Speaker 3: Yeah, the silly season. We talked about mid year whatever
- 45:58Speaker 3: one's need to be swapping Sea every five minutes. But
- 46:01Speaker 3: it's gone from sort of silly to ridiculous in the
- 46:02Speaker 3: last couple of weeks. We've just referenced facelifts, dancing with
- 46:05Speaker 3: the Stars, and something else I can't remember in the
- 46:07Speaker 3: last three minutes. So yeah, it's definitely getting a bit
- 46:10Speaker 3: nuts at this time of year.
- 46:11Speaker 1: Is that it is? But I feel like that's where we
- 46:14Speaker 1: can call it a day. We know your thoughts on
- 46:17Speaker 1: the Malaysia Grand Prix. I believe Jey Martin is going
- 46:21Speaker 1: to be strong. I also think this is a track
- 46:23Speaker 1: that does suit Mark Marquez. You know, it's the type
- 46:26Speaker 1: of track. There's a lot of long straights here, hardbreaking
- 46:29Speaker 1: on camera, off Canber. It's hard to not want, like
- 46:33Speaker 1: you said earlier, it's hard to not just say Jey
- 46:35Speaker 1: Martin's going to be fast, He's going to put it
- 46:37Speaker 1: on pole and because of the variabilities, he's going to
- 46:40Speaker 1: be stronger than Peco Banyaya. But the Professor might prevail
- 46:43Speaker 1: in Malaysia and we might see him strong and standing
- 46:47Speaker 1: on the number one. But ma'am, I feel like that's
- 46:49Speaker 1: our Malaysia Grand Prix preview and our Thaighland Grand Prix
- 46:53Speaker 1: review wrapped up in a nutshell. And if you guys
- 46:56Speaker 1: are listening can't get enough Moto GP action, then you
