- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday.
- 0:14It is the 26th of August. Welcome to the new week.
- 0:17I hope you're going well. Hope your weekend was a good
- 0:19one, maybe even a relaxing one if you are really lucky.
- 0:23But here we are at the beginning of the next week and we have got
- 0:28a real treat to get us started. This is the loveliest passage in
- 0:34all of scripture. What's Sean the loveliest?
- 0:38Well, it's definitely the one most about love.
- 0:40It is used in countless weddings, including mine
- 0:44because, well, frankly, how do you beat it?
- 0:46You just don't. This.
- 0:48This is a wonderful passage where Paul talks to his church
- 0:52about just what it looks like to love each other.
- 0:56So with all of that said, let us share it together, shall we?
- 0:59Let's read together First Corinthians chapter 13.
- 1:13If I speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn't
- 1:18love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
- 1:24If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God's
- 1:28secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such
- 1:33faith that I could move mountains but didn't love
- 1:37others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I had to
- 1:42the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it.
- 1:48But if I didn't love others, I would have gained nothing.
- 1:54Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful
- 2:02or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way.
- 2:07It is not irritable and it keeps no record of being wronged.
- 2:13It does not rejoice about injustice, but rejoices whenever
- 2:17the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses
- 2:23faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every
- 2:28circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown
- 2:32languages and special knowledge will become useless, but love
- 2:37will last forever. Now our knowledge is partial and
- 2:42incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of
- 2:46the whole picture. But when the time of perfection
- 2:50comes, these partial things will become useless.
- 2:54When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child,
- 2:59but when I grew up I put away childish things.
- 3:02Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a
- 3:07mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity.
- 3:13All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will
- 3:19know everything completely, just as God who knows me completely.
- 3:25Three things will last forever. Faith, hope and love.
- 3:33And the greatest of these is love.
- 3:48Oh Jesus, you know our broken hearts.
- 3:51You know that our sinful nature pushes us in the direction of
- 3:57judging, of keeping record, of being boastful and jealous and
- 4:02proud. But you don't only tell us this
- 4:07different way. You don't only show us this
- 4:10different way, but you yourself are this different way.
- 4:14You, you, Jesus, our love. Thank you for the love that you
- 4:21are, the love that you show us, the love that you have given us.
- 4:26And oh, my prayer is that this love would transform us from the
- 4:30inside out so that we too could love like you do.
- 4:35Well, we probably won't ever achieve that this side of
- 4:38eternity, but how about that we can love more like you do, our
- 4:44incredible, loving Saviour and whose name we pray.
- 4:49Amen.
