- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And when they could not come nigh
- 0:05Speaker 1: unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where
- 0:08Speaker 1: he was, and when they had broken it up, they
- 0:12Speaker 1: let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Mark 2.4 As I ponder and meditate on Mark 2
- 0:23Speaker 1: and Matthew 9, I stand in awe of how the
- 0:27Speaker 1: two stories connect. in the same way that the friends
- 0:32Speaker 1: got to Jesus in unconventional ways, so too did the outcasts, misfits,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and tax collectors get to Jesus in unconventional ways. Jesus,
- 0:45Speaker 1: may this story and your life serve as a reminder
- 0:50Speaker 1: that you came to heal all that are lost and
- 0:53Speaker 1: in need of healing, both physically and, more importantly, spiritually.
- 1:00Speaker 1: no matter what their condition, I am committing my life

- 2:40Speaker 3: A hole in the roof. In our last story, Jesus
- 2:44Speaker 3: climbed a small hill and preached to thousands of people
- 2:48Speaker 3: about the kingdom of God. He spoke about the backwards
- 2:51Speaker 3: economy of God's blessings, that the poor in spirit meet
- 2:55Speaker 3: and mourning are the ones to inherit ultimate blessing from God.
- 2:59Speaker 3: He spoke of loving your enemies, not harboring hatred in
- 3:02Speaker 3: your heart, and removing judgment from your mind. All these
- 3:06Speaker 3: things caused awe and wonder in those listening. Now we
- 3:10Speaker 3: witness the faithful devotion of a few friends. They truly
- 3:14Speaker 3: act out the kingdom of God by doing whatever it
- 3:16Speaker 3: takes to get their friend to the feet of Jesus.
- 3:20Speaker 3: They even risk vandalism and arrest to make sure their
- 3:23Speaker 3: loved one is healed. inspired by the Gospels.
- 3:29Speaker 4: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of The
- 3:32Speaker 4: Bible in a Year. Once again, we are so happy
- 3:36Speaker 4: about the over 20 million people who have joined us
- 3:38Speaker 4: on this podcast, and I would encourage you right now
- 3:41Speaker 4: to pass this podcast along to others. Let them know
- 3:45Speaker 4: because we want to get the Word of God to
- 3:47Speaker 4: as many people as possible as quickly as possible. So,
- 3:52Speaker 4: Let's pick up where we left off the last time.
- 3:55Speaker 4: We heard Jesus teaching the Sermon on the Mount in
- 3:57Speaker 4: our last episode. He laid out God's standard for true
- 4:01Speaker 4: righteousness and made it clear that righteousness is not self-righteousness,
- 4:05Speaker 4: but righteousness in Christ, that it's a matter of the heart,
- 4:08Speaker 4: not just words or actions. Ultimately, Jesus was making a
- 4:13Speaker 4: clear case for our need of a Savior, our desperate
- 4:16Speaker 4: need for His salvation. Today, We'll hear of a man
- 4:20Speaker 4: and his friends who demonstrated great faith and friendship as
- 4:23Speaker 4: they went to extraordinary lengths to help their friend receive
- 4:26Speaker 4: the healing he needed from Jesus. We'll also hear how
- 4:30Speaker 4: Jesus called Matthew, a hated tax collector, to be one
- 4:33Speaker 4: of his 12 disciples. In both stories, the religious elite
- 4:38Speaker 4: become angry at Jesus' words and deeds as they fail
- 4:41Speaker 4: to see who this man who heals and forgives really is,
- 4:45Speaker 4: the Lord of life, the Lord of all. Let's listen
- 4:49Speaker 4: now to the reading of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 4:53Speaker 3: The three friends stood outside the crowded house. Hundreds of
- 4:57Speaker 3: people surrounded the property so they could hear Jesus teach.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Two of them stood, the other one laid on a stretcher.
- 5:04Speaker 3: The man laying down was completely paralyzed from the neck down.
- 5:08Speaker 3: His friends had brought him to the house in hopes
- 5:11Speaker 3: that Jesus would be able to heal him. However, the
- 5:14Speaker 3: house was overflowing with so many people, almost all hope
- 5:17Speaker 3: of seeing Jesus was lost. The two men looked down
- 5:21Speaker 3: at their friend, trying to hold back their tears. Then
- 5:25Speaker 3: one of them looked at the house again. His eyes
- 5:27Speaker 3: scanned the property. He smiled and looked.
- 5:30Speaker 1: At the others.
- 5:32Speaker 3: I have an idea, he said. Jesus was teaching in
- 5:35Speaker 3: the middle of the home. Hundreds of people sat and
- 5:38Speaker 3: stood around him, hanging on every word he said. Jesus
- 5:42Speaker 3: was speaking of the kingdom of God. He spoke of
- 5:45Speaker 3: God's law, his love, and his forgiveness. As Jesus was speaking,
- 5:50Speaker 3: he felt a small piece of plaster fall on his head. Startled,
- 5:54Speaker 3: Jesus looked up to the ceiling to see the roof
- 5:56Speaker 3: being torn apart from the outside. Jesus stood to his feet,
- 6:00Speaker 3: and the crowd stepped back as more roofing fell from
- 6:03Speaker 3: the ceiling onto the floor. A bright light shone through
- 6:06Speaker 3: the ceiling. Then, all of the sudden, Jesus saw a
- 6:09Speaker 3: silhouette of a man on a stretcher being lowered down
- 6:12Speaker 3: by ropes. The two friends had found a way to Jesus.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Although it was unconventional and perhaps illegal, they were willing
- 6:20Speaker 3: to do whatever it took. The paralytic was lowered slowly.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Jesus went under the man and helped him to the floor.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Jesus looked up at the hole in the ceiling. He
- 6:30Speaker 3: could see the friend's guilty smiles. Jesus grinned and looked
- 6:34Speaker 3: down at the man. He placed his hand on his
- 6:37Speaker 3: shoulder and said, My child, your sins are forgiven. As
- 6:42Speaker 3: Jesus said this, a scribe in the crowd scoffed, His
- 6:46Speaker 3: sins are forgiven? What authority do you have to forgive sins?
- 6:50Speaker 3: God alone has the power to forgive sins. The scribe
- 6:54Speaker 3: spat on the ground, angry at Jesus' words. Jesus looked
- 6:58Speaker 3: at the man with compassion. He knew the scribe was
- 7:01Speaker 3: questioning his words. Jesus smiled and answered him, Tell me,
- 7:06Speaker 3: which is easier to say, your sins are forgiven or
- 7:11Speaker 3: get up and walk? And immediately as Jesus said this,
- 7:14Speaker 3: the man's legs began to move. The paralytic's eyes widened
- 7:18Speaker 3: as he lifted himself upright. Jesus stood up and helped
- 7:22Speaker 3: the man to his feet. The two of them embraced
- 7:25Speaker 3: and the man picked up.
- 7:26Speaker 2: His bed and walked out.
- 7:28Speaker 3: The crowd parted to make way for the man and
- 7:31Speaker 3: Jesus could see his two friends standing outside hugging him
- 7:34Speaker 3: and leaping for joy. Standing shoulder to shoulder, the three
- 7:38Speaker 3: men walked away back to their homes. After these things,
- 7:42Speaker 3: Jesus went out and sat by the sea. The waves
- 7:45Speaker 3: crashed gently on the shore. The breeze whistled to the left,
- 7:49Speaker 3: and Jesus watched as crowds began to approach him. Their
- 7:52Speaker 3: needs were endless, but so was his love for them.
- 7:56Speaker 3: To his right, Jesus saw a man named Matthew. He
- 8:00Speaker 3: was a tax collector and hated among his Jewish kin.
- 8:04Speaker 3: Tax collectors were considered Jewish traitors. They whored themselves to
- 8:08Speaker 3: the Roman government and used corruption for their own gain. Matthew, however,
- 8:13Speaker 3: felt the weight of his sins. He sat at his
- 8:16Speaker 3: booth with his head held low, ashamed of who he
- 8:19Speaker 3: had become. Jesus approached the booth. Matthew had grown accustomed
- 8:23Speaker 3: to men and women coming to the tax booth to
- 8:26Speaker 3: spit on him and ridicule him. However, Jesus simply smiled
- 8:30Speaker 3: and said two simple words that would change Matthew's life. Forever.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Follow me, Jesus said plainly. Then he began to walk off.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Matthew paused for a moment and looked at the pile
- 8:43Speaker 3: of coins and paper at his desk. Was he truly
- 8:46Speaker 3: willing to sacrifice wealth and favor with Rome to follow Jesus?
- 8:50Speaker 3: Was Jesus worth it? Matthew looked at Jesus walking away. Yes,
- 8:56Speaker 3: it is worth everything, he thought to himself. Matthew stood
- 8:59Speaker 3: to his feet and ran after Jesus. The two of
- 9:02Speaker 3: them connected, and Matthew hosted Jesus and his followers at
- 9:06Speaker 3: his home. They laughed and shared stories. However, not all
- 9:10Speaker 3: were amused. The Pharisees stood outside the house with their
- 9:13Speaker 3: arms crossed. They stopped one of his disciples and said,
- 9:17Speaker 3: Look how he dines with tax collectors and sinners. Aren't
- 9:20Speaker 3: you ashamed to follow him? The disciple paused, unsure of
- 9:24Speaker 3: how he should answer. Before he could say anything, Jesus
- 9:27Speaker 3: stepped outside and approached them. His eyes were piercing. filled
- 9:32Speaker 3: with deep wisdom. Tell me, Jesus said, who needs a
- 9:35Speaker 3: doctor more, the sick or the healthy? I have not
- 9:39Speaker 3: come to sit at the table of the righteous, but
- 9:41Speaker 3: to help sinners in need. Jesus left with his disciple
- 9:45Speaker 3: back inside. As he left, he gestured for the Pharisees
- 9:49Speaker 3: to join him. They sneered and left.
- 9:55Speaker 4: As we begin the story of Jesus today, we find
- 9:58Speaker 4: him teaching in a very crowded house. People are squeezed
- 10:02Speaker 4: in from wall to wall and spilling out of the
- 10:05Speaker 4: door as they listen to the wise words of this teacher, Jesus,
- 10:09Speaker 4: who was unlike anyone they had ever heard before. We
- 10:13Speaker 4: then discovered that some men had heard that Jesus would
- 10:16Speaker 4: be nearby, and they had known of his healing ministry.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Perhaps they'd seen some of the miracles happen. But for
- 10:23Speaker 4: whatever reason, they knew that this was an opportunity to
- 10:26Speaker 4: help a dear friend, a man who was paralyzed and helpless.
- 10:31Speaker 4: They wanted to get their friend to Jesus. He would
- 10:34Speaker 4: not have the ability to get to Jesus on his own,
- 10:37Speaker 4: immobile as he was. But these friends demonstrated true love
- 10:41Speaker 4: and compassion as they carried the man to the home
- 10:44Speaker 4: where Jesus was speaking. When they arrived, It seemed impossible
- 10:49Speaker 4: to get to Jesus. There were so many people around.
- 10:52Speaker 4: And apparently no one else cared for the paralyzed man
- 10:55Speaker 4: and wouldn't let him through. But these four friends were
- 10:59Speaker 4: undeterred and undaunted. They climbed up on the roof and
- 11:03Speaker 4: dug out a hole so that they could lower the
- 11:05Speaker 4: man to Jesus. Talk about determination and dedication, compassion and cooperation.
- 11:12Speaker 4: It's all here. They could have easily packed up and left,
- 11:15Speaker 4: heads hanging low, defeated, sad because their friend would remain crippled.
- 11:19Speaker 4: But that's not what they did. They insisted on seeking
- 11:23Speaker 4: after Jesus and the promise of healing they believe he
- 11:26Speaker 4: could give to their friend. What a great reminder this is,
- 11:31Speaker 4: that we should have compassion upon people that we love
- 11:34Speaker 4: and care about, that we should do everything possible to
- 11:38Speaker 4: spend and be spent in order to bring our friends
- 11:41Speaker 4: and even people we don't know to Jesus. Are we
- 11:44Speaker 4: willing to push through every obstacle, to search for every
- 11:48Speaker 4: possible way to connect those who need the Lord to
- 11:51Speaker 4: the one and the only one who can make a
- 11:53Speaker 4: difference in their lives? Or do we just give a
- 11:56Speaker 4: half-hearted attempt and turn away at the slightest setback? Pray
- 12:00Speaker 4: that God would give you and me strong determination and
- 12:04Speaker 4: devotion to get our friends to Jesus. These men show
- 12:08Speaker 4: us the valuable lesson that Jesus taught about asking and
- 12:11Speaker 4: seeking and knocking and never giving up, because the answer
- 12:15Speaker 4: will come. When Jesus saw the man coming down from
- 12:18Speaker 4: the ceiling, he went into action. Going to the man
- 12:22Speaker 4: and speaking to him, here is what he said in
- 12:25Speaker 4: Luke 5, verse 20. When Jesus saw their faith, he said, Friend,
- 12:31Speaker 4: your sins are forgiven. First notice that Jesus was not
- 12:35Speaker 4: speaking of this man's faith, the crippled man's faith, but
- 12:39Speaker 4: the faith of his friend's. It was their faith that
- 12:42Speaker 4: brought the man to Jesus. Our actions, when done in faith,
- 12:46Speaker 4: believing God, have significant impact on the lives of others.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Our faith moves from faith to faith. Notice that Jesus
- 12:54Speaker 4: doesn't immediately heal the man's body. His first words are
- 12:58Speaker 4: words of forgiveness. The crowd, and especially the Pharisees and
- 13:03Speaker 4: the teachers of the law, take note of this. It's
- 13:05Speaker 4: offensive and shocking to them that Jesus would claim to
- 13:08Speaker 4: be able to forgive sins. That's something only God can do.
- 13:13Speaker 4: But Jesus shocked them again as he spoke to reveal
- 13:17Speaker 4: their hidden thoughts. He asked if it would be easier
- 13:20Speaker 4: to say the man's sins were forgiven or to tell
- 13:22Speaker 4: the man to get up and walk. Clearly, it would
- 13:25Speaker 4: be easier to just say his sins were forgiven because
- 13:28Speaker 4: there would be no visual proof of this having worked
- 13:30Speaker 4: or not. So he turned to the man and told
- 13:33Speaker 4: him to take up his mat and go home. Immediately,
- 13:37Speaker 4: the man was healed. He stood up from his cot.
- 13:40Speaker 4: and began praising God. With those words, Jesus showed that
- 13:44Speaker 4: he has the power to both heal, but most importantly,
- 13:48Speaker 4: to heal the soul, to forgive sins. Everyone praised God
- 13:53Speaker 4: in amazement for what they saw Jesus do. We then
- 13:57Speaker 4: see Jesus calling another disciple. This time, it was a
- 14:01Speaker 4: man named Matthew. He was a tax collector, which means
- 14:05Speaker 4: the Jewish people saw him as a traitor and a
- 14:07Speaker 4: servant of the invading Roman government. Tax collectors were not
- 14:11Speaker 4: respected or revered members of Jewish society. They were just
- 14:16Speaker 4: included with all the other sinners. So when the religious
- 14:20Speaker 4: crowd saw Jesus with tax collectors, they once again sneered
- 14:24Speaker 4: and scoffed that this man would stoop so low as
- 14:27Speaker 4: to associate with outcasts and sinners. How could anyone follow
- 14:32Speaker 4: such a man, they thought. And once more, Jesus called
- 14:36Speaker 4: them out for their hypocrisy. He had come to heal
- 14:39Speaker 4: the sick, to help sinners, not the righteous. They could
- 14:42Speaker 4: not understand that the purpose of Christ's coming was to
- 14:45Speaker 4: save sinful people. The righteousness of the Pharisees and the
- 14:50Speaker 4: religious crowd was only skin deep and that they needed healing,
- 14:54Speaker 4: soul healing, just as much as the tax collectors and
- 14:58Speaker 4: the sinners. Christ came into the world to save sinners
- 15:02Speaker 4: like you and me. Jesus was ready and willing for
- 15:06Speaker 4: all to follow him. But so many rejected him, especially
- 15:10Speaker 4: those who were very religious. And yet he kept on
- 15:14Speaker 4: helping people, loving people, and would one day go to
- 15:17Speaker 4: a cross to lay down his life so that our
- 15:19Speaker 4: sins could be forgiven. Dear God, we thank you for
- 15:23Speaker 4: the four faithful friends who go to great lengths to
- 15:27Speaker 4: show your love and compassion to their friend for the
- 15:30Speaker 4: healing and the power of Jesus to save. Help us, Lord,
- 15:34Speaker 4: to be friends like these to people we know and
- 15:37Speaker 4: to do whatever it takes, to bring people to the loving,
- 15:40Speaker 4: saving arms of Christ. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
