- 0:18Speaker 1: Casey Smith and Tyler.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Jones, Welcome to Refresh Radio. I'm your host, Casey Smith.
- 0:27Speaker 2: The rut is on or is it? Is it locked down?
- 0:30Speaker 2: Or are you locked in? This is Retfresh, Let's go.
- 0:46Speaker 2: What is happening? Everyone? Welcome to Refresh Radio. I'm your
- 0:50Speaker 2: host Casey Smith. Tyler Jones is here as well. We
- 0:53Speaker 2: are brought to you by First Light Year and we
- 0:55Speaker 2: are rocking and rolling throughout the country hunting white till Dear,
- 0:59Speaker 2: how neat is that we get to see the rut unfold?
- 1:02Speaker 3: Tyler, I'm not powered by that apple. I just ate
- 1:04Speaker 3: umpowered by First Lee.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Well, you know.
- 1:08Speaker 2: You uh, you know, you have a little meat, have
- 1:10Speaker 2: a little bread, you know that kind of stuff. We
- 1:12Speaker 2: had a lot of bread actually around here. So there's
- 1:13Speaker 2: this thing that's phenomenon that happens, phenomena that's actually on
- 1:16Speaker 2: the muppets. If you're on hunting trips, Uh, sometimes you
- 1:21Speaker 2: kind of have these little grocery store runs. We just
- 1:24Speaker 2: grab some stuff you think you need. Well, every once
- 1:27Speaker 2: in a while you load up on bread, you know,
- 1:29Speaker 2: and you end up with like four or five loaves.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Of bread, maybe five or six.
- 1:32Speaker 2: And you look at like when you do it, you
- 1:34Speaker 2: don't think you're getting too many. But long story short, yard,
- 1:37Speaker 2: you forget how many. You buy a lot of peanut
- 1:40Speaker 2: butter and jelly, and then you figure out a way
- 1:42Speaker 2: to use all that bread on your hunting trips.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Tyler, it's like two loaves turned into you know, enough
- 1:47Speaker 3: to feed fast man.
- 1:49Speaker 2: That's right. Uh So I have a question for you, Tyler.
- 1:52Speaker 2: What is the key to packing peanut butter and jellies
- 1:55Speaker 2: in your hunting pack and not having them turn into
- 1:58Speaker 2: a squish fit?
- 1:59Speaker 4: No such thing. Yeah, that's why I take apple.
- 2:01Speaker 2: I like, do you like a squish peanut butter and jelly?
- 2:03Speaker 5: No way?
- 2:04Speaker 4: No, I want. I want the middle of that thing
- 2:06Speaker 4: to be.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Busting, busting, not busting, but busting. But no, it will
- 2:10Speaker 2: taste busting, it will.
- 2:12Speaker 4: The middle of it needs to be busting.
- 2:14Speaker 3: It needs to be like it looked like a turtle shell,
- 2:16Speaker 3: you know what I mean? I need that what I
- 2:19Speaker 3: need when I start buying into it for it to
- 2:21Speaker 3: start going out the other side.
- 2:22Speaker 2: We've been uh, we have been doing quite a bit
- 2:25Speaker 2: of hunting.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Uh.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Team Ellman has killed let me just say, a lot
- 2:29Speaker 2: of deer in the past week and a half. We
- 2:32Speaker 2: went on quite the run. If you want to hear
- 2:34Speaker 2: about some of that, you can go listen to the
- 2:35Speaker 2: Element podcast and talk about it. But we have learned
- 2:38Speaker 2: a lot about deer hunting this year. It's funny. I
- 2:41Speaker 2: feel like I I've been hunting for a long time
- 2:43Speaker 2: and I learn a ton every year, and the thing
- 2:47Speaker 2: I've learned this year is a lot more about calling,
- 2:49Speaker 2: specifically rattling and its effectiveness and win Tyler, we rattling
- 2:57Speaker 2: a buck together and you shot him, and he's a
- 3:01Speaker 2: giant way to go, You.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Way to go. Bruh.
- 3:05Speaker 2: What did you take from that that you think you
- 3:08Speaker 2: can apply kind of across all mediums in the hunting world.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Probably that if I feel good about a place that's
- 3:22Speaker 3: over a mile in walking distance, that it's probably a
- 3:30Speaker 3: pretty good place to go try to kill a deer.
- 3:33Speaker 5: You know.
- 3:33Speaker 2: One of the things that I saw on that little
- 3:35Speaker 2: jount where we killed that deer's when the sign picked
- 3:40Speaker 2: up increasingly. That's whenever we started getting into deer like
- 3:45Speaker 2: we saw some rubs and scrapes on our walk, bumped
- 3:49Speaker 2: a few little does, saw a bed, saw some really
- 3:52Speaker 2: you know, nice rubs, and then the next rattling sequence
- 3:55Speaker 2: were rattling a buck. So I think that hot sign
- 3:58Speaker 2: is the ticket almost any time of the year. You know,
- 4:00Speaker 2: hot sign people talk a lot about that for you know,
- 4:03Speaker 2: pre rut stuff. But I think that even right now,
- 4:05Speaker 2: if you can find stuff that wasn't there a day
- 4:08Speaker 2: or two ago and it is right now, I mean,
- 4:09Speaker 2: it's pretty much rocking and rolling. In fact, we just
- 4:11Speaker 2: hung a camera yesterday on a place that there was
- 4:15Speaker 2: a bunch of little whisty trees that didn't have any
- 4:19Speaker 2: rubs on them at all two weeks ago, and then
- 4:21Speaker 2: we go back over there yesterday and there's fresh shakee
- 4:24Speaker 2: shavings on the ground, and sure enough, hang a camera
- 4:26Speaker 2: right there and there's a nice three year old buck.
- 4:29Speaker 2: He's not quite a shooter yet, but you know, like
- 4:31Speaker 2: instantaneous data that you can kind of work off of
- 4:34Speaker 2: with that, but you know, it just kind of shows
- 4:35Speaker 2: you at that fresh sign and fresh sign is kind
- 4:38Speaker 2: of the key this week around the country. We talked
- 4:41Speaker 2: to people that are kind of experienced different experiencing different
- 4:45Speaker 2: rut situations, because that's kind of what happens around the country.
- 4:48Speaker 5: You know.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Everybody thinks about, you know, November first through the tenth
- 4:52Speaker 2: being just like hot and heavy, crazy rut, and that's
- 4:54Speaker 2: really not the case everywhere. I mean, absolutely those are
- 4:57Speaker 2: great dates, but we still have a lot of great
- 4:59Speaker 2: days ahead of us, still for almost anywhere in the country.
- 5:03Speaker 2: And we're gonna hear from a couple of people that
- 5:04Speaker 2: kind of give some antegial evidence for that to be
- 5:08Speaker 2: the case, whether that's just later rut dates or just
- 5:11Speaker 2: some good confidence in like the second and third go
- 5:14Speaker 2: around for Bucks coming off doors and coming back on
- 5:17Speaker 2: and Tyler, you're actually a guy who has had a
- 5:21Speaker 2: lot of success in the teens of November, right, I
- 5:25Speaker 2: don't know.
- 5:26Speaker 4: I don't know if I've been kiss the team.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Do you hear on thee on the tenth, I've killed a.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Couple on the tenth, I've killed one on the eleventh,
- 5:34Speaker 3: and then I've killed a lot of them like post Thanksgiving.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah, And so we do have some good dates ahead
- 5:41Speaker 2: of us. The encouraging thing to see here.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Sure, you know you asked me when I shot one
- 5:47Speaker 3: eyed Jack. I think it was the second of December. Yeah,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and he was following old matriarch Dough, I mean ten
- 5:53Speaker 3: yards behind her when he came third.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's uh when you were So I know
- 5:59Speaker 2: that place you shot that deer, but I don't quite
- 6:03Speaker 2: understand what it functions as. Is it like a staging
- 6:06Speaker 2: area for food or what is what? Like where did
- 6:09Speaker 2: you kill that?
- 6:10Speaker 3: I'd say that immediate spot, but it's a very small
- 6:13Speaker 3: spot that would be considered staging maybe. Yeah, I mean
- 6:17Speaker 3: it's and it's not It's not like the deer going
- 6:19Speaker 3: to stage there for thirty minutes. I mean they're going
- 6:21Speaker 3: to stay there for five minutes before they get out
- 6:23Speaker 3: on the edge of the field.
- 6:25Speaker 4: But you know, the other micro.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Habitat feature or whatever you want to call it that's
- 6:33Speaker 3: there is you know, betting, there's.
- 6:35Speaker 4: A there's a lot of there's a kind of a.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I don't know, sub irrigated there, and kind of a
- 6:41Speaker 3: lot of like low spots. So there's a lot of
- 6:43Speaker 3: little small elevation changes with grass and plums and cedars
- 6:48Speaker 3: and a lot of little nooks for them to hide
- 6:50Speaker 3: in and can hold a lot of dose. And I
- 6:52Speaker 3: call it it's kind of a nursery maybe or something
- 6:55Speaker 3: like that. I mean, it's it's just dough betting us
- 6:59Speaker 3: as much as anything. Yeah, Tyler who to be on
- 7:01Speaker 3: the show today, Well, you mentioned our buddy Anthony Warren.
- 7:04Speaker 4: He's in Kansas.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Got some good kind of different a different outlook on Kansas,
- 7:09Speaker 3: some really good intricate stuff there.
- 7:10Speaker 4: He's a really well fought guy.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Our buddy Ley McNasty McClendon in Louisiana. He's uh, he's
- 7:18Speaker 3: a twinkie away from killing a big buck at all times.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Soon to be of meteor fame. He'll be on the
- 7:24Speaker 2: YouTube channel pretty Sion.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Yep.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Our buddy Reyes Johnson, who if you follow him on
- 7:29Speaker 3: social media, you know he's not just a big buck killer,
- 7:32Speaker 3: but he is a big buck fanatic. He finds big deer,
- 7:35Speaker 3: takes trail camera pictures of him and finds sheds often.
- 7:38Speaker 3: He had some uh you know success there in Kentucky
- 7:42Speaker 3: like he normally does. And then finally, you know, one
- 7:47Speaker 3: of our media correspondents, Adam Moore, is going to be
- 7:50Speaker 3: in the Mississippi is gonna be in Mississippi doing the
- 7:56Speaker 3: thing there where it is still very warm and muggy,
- 8:00Speaker 3: just like it is in East Texas.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Casey, well, that sounds good. Let's get him on the phone.
- 8:05Speaker 3: This is one of my really good friends, Anthony Warren.
- 8:07Speaker 3: He is a big buck shooter sometimes a big buck killer,
- 8:12Speaker 3: and he has killed one recently in Kansas. Anthony, what's
- 8:15Speaker 3: going on, dude?
- 8:16Speaker 6: Hey, how's it going, guys?
- 8:18Speaker 7: How are y'all?
- 8:18Speaker 4: We're good.
- 8:19Speaker 3: We're you know, traveling around trying to shoot some deer
- 8:21Speaker 3: and we don't have the same luxury of you as
- 8:23Speaker 3: the punch tag this week, but we're working on it.
- 8:27Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure. Well, sometimes you get lucky, man.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Yeah, you could say that maybe providential too. But let
- 8:34Speaker 3: me say this. You have been all up in the
- 8:37Speaker 3: deer in a couple of different states, but we're talking
- 8:39Speaker 3: about Kansas right now. And if I recall correctly, you've
- 8:44Speaker 3: been calling some deer in right Has that been working
- 8:46Speaker 3: for you pretty well?
- 8:48Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 8:48Speaker 2: It has.
- 8:50Speaker 6: I think it's getting to a point where it's gonna
- 8:52Speaker 6: start slowing down. Probably over the last day to two days,
- 8:58Speaker 6: I've actually seen.
- 8:59Speaker 2: A lot more of the deer.
- 9:00Speaker 6: They seem to be locked down with those, and they've
- 9:04Speaker 6: kind of made a transition. We got some good weather
- 9:07Speaker 6: and the Tempts kind of cooled off one evening and
- 9:09Speaker 6: it just seemed like they were super receptive, and I
- 9:11Speaker 6: think that kind.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Of triggered a lot of the bucks to start.
- 9:16Speaker 6: Speaking those and then transition now into what I believe
- 9:20Speaker 6: is going to be locked down the next few days.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Gotcha, So what what's the call that you feel like
- 9:25Speaker 3: is most advantageous right now?
- 9:29Speaker 6: You know, I've been kind of throwing a trio out there,
- 9:34Speaker 6: and generally it's whenever I see a buck and I
- 9:37Speaker 6: kind of start with, you know, real light rattle sequence,
- 9:40Speaker 6: especially if they're close. After that, I have been using
- 9:46Speaker 6: a grunt to just a little bit, so I might
- 9:49Speaker 6: rattle for thirty seconds, do a quick grunt, and then
- 9:52Speaker 6: if I don't get anything after that, I may throw
- 9:55Speaker 6: out a real light snort wheeze, and that combination is
- 10:00Speaker 6: and pretty lethal so far.
- 10:02Speaker 2: The last five to six days for me. Okay, So,
- 10:05Speaker 2: as we're moving into like some lockdown stuff, do you
- 10:09Speaker 2: think that you can still hunt pinch points and be
- 10:11Speaker 2: effective or are you looking for something different?
- 10:14Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 10:15Speaker 6: I would I would say that there's probably a combination
- 10:18Speaker 6: of things. You can definitely hunt pinch points, because I
- 10:21Speaker 6: think I think as bucks transition off one dough to
- 10:24Speaker 6: the next dough, they're still going to use those pinch points.
- 10:29Speaker 5: But what I would be more.
- 10:30Speaker 6: Focused on right now, if I were going to spend
- 10:32Speaker 6: a lot of my time out in the woods, would
- 10:35Speaker 6: be just thick, nasty betting areas and maybe just slightly
- 10:40Speaker 6: downwindo those betting areas as I see a lot of
- 10:43Speaker 6: bucks like to kind of sin check those areas, especially
- 10:46Speaker 6: if they don't have to go into those thick places
- 10:48Speaker 6: to find those. They just want to be really quick
- 10:51Speaker 6: smell the down wind side and get onto the next
- 10:53Speaker 6: betting area, do you, And so that's what I would
- 10:56Speaker 6: focus on.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Do you glass a lot during kind of lockdown stuff too,
- 10:59Speaker 2: and just try to find you and make moves on them?
- 11:01Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 11:02Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 11:02Speaker 6: If I'm if I'm not feeling very confident, I do.
- 11:05Speaker 5: A lot of driving and surviving.
- 11:09Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, do a lot of driving, a lot of glassing,
- 11:12Speaker 6: and just try to pinpoint where I'm seeing a lot
- 11:14Speaker 6: of movement and then make a move into that place.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Got you cool? So as we look here at the
- 11:20Speaker 2: next week, do you think that we're going to see
- 11:24Speaker 2: another time when the bucks do break off and we
- 11:27Speaker 2: have another rut flurry or do you think that it's
- 11:29Speaker 2: kind of a downhill from here?
- 11:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I definitely.
- 11:32Speaker 6: I'm I'm a big fan of this second into third
- 11:35Speaker 6: week of November, and I feel like you can really
- 11:39Speaker 6: get a big buck that is transitioning off of a
- 11:42Speaker 6: off of a dough looking for the next one, and
- 11:44Speaker 6: they seem to get kind of frantic because in their
- 11:46Speaker 6: mind they know that things are probably gonna start winding down.
- 11:50Speaker 6: So you can still catch them doing some real crazy
- 11:53Speaker 6: things and being, you know, kind of unpredictable. But if
- 11:57Speaker 6: you're in the right spot, it's it's kind of a
- 11:59Speaker 6: predict pattern. I like the weather going into the upcoming week.
- 12:04Speaker 6: I like the fact that these deer will be transitioning
- 12:08Speaker 6: looking for new dos. It's one of my favorite times
- 12:12Speaker 6: of the year going into next week.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Sure thing.
- 12:14Speaker 3: So on a scale of one to ten, next week,
- 12:17Speaker 3: what do you predict the buck movement to be?
- 12:19Speaker 5: Like?
- 12:21Speaker 6: I like to say, you know, probably around eight to nine.
- 12:24Speaker 6: It's still gonna be really super high.
- 12:27Speaker 5: The reason I.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Don't give it a full ten is because there will
- 12:29Speaker 6: still be bucks that are going to be locked down
- 12:31Speaker 6: with those and so it's just gonna be about putting
- 12:35Speaker 6: a lot of hours into the stand, being close to
- 12:37Speaker 6: betting areas or tench points between betting areas, and I
- 12:41Speaker 6: feel like a guy can have a lot of success
- 12:43Speaker 6: doing those things.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Yeah, good call, man. I think that's gonna be the
- 12:46Speaker 3: same case for a lot of places in the country.
- 12:49Speaker 3: So I appreciate the report, man, and we'll be talking
- 12:51Speaker 3: to you again sometime, I'm sure this year.
- 12:54Speaker 6: Yeah, thanks, guys, I appreciate you on the phone.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Probably the funniest hunter in the world in Lay McClinton.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Also know who's Lay McNasty. He's in Louisiana. What's up?
- 13:04Speaker 5: Both own?
- 13:06Speaker 4: Nothing?
- 13:06Speaker 5: Drinking? Seltzer's hanging out with my cats.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Yeah, well it's on brand for you, that's right. You've
- 13:14Speaker 2: been hunting all over the country, but you keep tabs
- 13:17Speaker 2: and losing in a whole lot because it's home and
- 13:19Speaker 2: I know you're fixing to get into the woods quite
- 13:21Speaker 2: a bit. What is essentially going on in Louisiana right
- 13:24Speaker 2: now with the deer?
- 13:25Speaker 9: Well, right now, you know me not being holed. I
- 13:29Speaker 9: haven't really been getting a whole lot of true right activity,
- 13:33Speaker 9: not the big deal. But you know, I've noticed things
- 13:37Speaker 9: such as, you know, your bachelor groups breaking up, you know,
- 13:40Speaker 9: as the testosterone starts to build and kind of you know,
- 13:45Speaker 9: you hear a lot of people saying, oh, I'm not
- 13:48Speaker 9: getting any of my buck's on camera anymore, you know,
- 13:51Speaker 9: that bold saying. But yeah, I've been getting a lot
- 13:54Speaker 9: of separation. But also I've been having friends nearby that
- 13:59Speaker 9: i've back actually gotten to kill some of the more
- 14:02Speaker 9: target deer I've had. So I think that's definitely a
- 14:06Speaker 9: sign of you know, the group's breaking up, more territory
- 14:10Speaker 9: expanding and things such as that.
- 14:12Speaker 5: But on the flip side, you know, I'm still getting.
- 14:14Speaker 9: A lot of doze with their funds, and but you
- 14:18Speaker 9: know that that young buck pressure it is starting to
- 14:21Speaker 9: pick up.
- 14:22Speaker 5: You know, you can tell that.
- 14:24Speaker 9: These young bucks are starting to get antsy, They're starting
- 14:26Speaker 9: to get excited. You know, it's like your little junior
- 14:29Speaker 9: high boys trying to flirt with the senior girls.
- 14:31Speaker 2: You know, but at least they got some confidence, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 2: That's right. So, I know the Louisiana's a place that
- 14:38Speaker 2: has a lot of different rut dates and different zones.
- 14:42Speaker 2: You know, I think maybe I might have seen that
- 14:44Speaker 2: there's twenty something different kind of designated rout dates for Louisiana,
- 14:48Speaker 2: depending where you're at. I know, so this question is
- 14:51Speaker 2: a little bit localized, but in general, where you're at,
- 14:54Speaker 2: when do you usually see like that peak rut activity?
- 14:57Speaker 2: Are we like still a little ways out on that.
- 15:01Speaker 9: Well, I think it's coming up now for soon, like
- 15:05Speaker 9: within the next week or two. We've always banked on,
- 15:09Speaker 9: you know, like that Thanksgiving week, and.
- 15:10Speaker 5: I feel like a lot of people hear that.
- 15:12Speaker 9: But I would say also right now, you know, there's
- 15:16Speaker 9: been a lot of people catching these daytime slips to
- 15:19Speaker 9: where part of me thinks, you know, not right now,
- 15:22Speaker 9: it's not a bad time. You'll probably catch more bucks
- 15:24Speaker 9: cruising around and you know, just doing that normal nocturnal
- 15:29Speaker 9: nonsense they like to do.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Yeahs, have the have the acorns affected any of the
- 15:34Speaker 3: cameras sidings that you have?
- 15:38Speaker 5: Not? Not really. I'm not saying that it doesn't alter
- 15:43Speaker 5: where they might hang out more.
- 15:45Speaker 9: But I've still thrown out some feed and you know,
- 15:47Speaker 9: had plenty.
- 15:48Speaker 5: Of them come by.
- 15:49Speaker 9: But with with deer and feed, you also get a
- 15:53Speaker 9: you know.
- 15:53Speaker 5: A great big bucket full of hogs.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Pour in yeah.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I've heard that you hunt next door to this
- 16:02Speaker 3: really famous girl named Sasha and she's been shooting here
- 16:05Speaker 3: at your box.
- 16:05Speaker 9: Hey, yeah, man, Sasha is out there killing on the
- 16:09Speaker 9: woods making me sad, and.
- 16:13Speaker 5: I can't stand that girl. All she can say is okay.
- 16:17Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Man.
- 16:18Speaker 3: I hate that for you, man, But sometimes, you know,
- 16:20Speaker 3: neighbors mess things up for you.
- 16:23Speaker 4: Are you seeing you? Are you? Are you seeing?
- 16:25Speaker 5: What?
- 16:25Speaker 4: Dates?
- 16:26Speaker 3: Would you say there's like a lock down there in Louisiana?
- 16:31Speaker 9: Shoot, I would say like that late November in my opinion,
- 16:35Speaker 9: because I've gone through many phases.
- 16:36Speaker 5: I'm saying, you know, everybody hypes the rut up. Everybody's like, man,
- 16:41Speaker 5: you gotta be out there.
- 16:42Speaker 9: Not that they're wrong, but you know, I can't count
- 16:45Speaker 9: the years that I've said, man, I hate the rut.
- 16:47Speaker 7: Yeah, I hate hunting the rut.
- 16:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:50Speaker 9: Normally that Thanksgiving time, you know, if not to say
- 16:53Speaker 9: that you won't catch and run.
- 16:55Speaker 5: By in the twinkle of an eye.
- 16:57Speaker 9: But it's also during that time when they locked.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Down, you got them twinkly eyes.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I guarantee you that's right, dude. You know he rhymes
- 17:05Speaker 2: Jameis Winston. They kind of got that flow, you know,
- 17:07Speaker 2: as they say, whatever, that's crazy and it works, like
- 17:10Speaker 2: all right, So if we're looking at the next week,
- 17:12Speaker 2: since we're a little bit off of you know, the
- 17:15Speaker 2: peak Ruk yet and you know it's probably going to
- 17:17Speaker 2: be pretty warm there. I know a lot of the
- 17:19Speaker 2: country's experience in warmth, and you know you'll want a
- 17:22Speaker 2: pretty far south like we are. But the deer kind
- 17:24Speaker 2: of used to it. So in general, let's just just
- 17:26Speaker 2: go for the number here on a scale of one
- 17:28Speaker 2: to ten, What do you think buck movement's going to
- 17:30Speaker 2: be like in the next week in Louisiana?
- 17:34Speaker 5: If I had to be honest, you.
- 17:35Speaker 9: Know, just this being the way it is, i'd give
- 17:38Speaker 9: it like a seven, maybe seven point seven point seven maybe.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Yeah, well that's pretty good. You sound like Portnoy on
- 17:45Speaker 2: a pizza review. That's cool. So you feel like it's
- 17:50Speaker 2: a pretty good time to get in the wood steel.
- 17:52Speaker 5: I feel like it's your best huh yeah. I mean
- 17:55Speaker 5: you'll you'll have a lot of people say, well, the
- 17:57Speaker 5: root was late, you know, I don't. I don't think this.
- 17:59Speaker 9: I don't know if that will be the case, could be.
- 18:02Speaker 9: What my thought is, this is normally the time it's
- 18:06Speaker 9: it happens, and you can't kill him sitting around on
- 18:09Speaker 9: the couch eating Debbie.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Well, he knows that because he's trying it. It doesn't work. Uh, brother,
- 18:16Speaker 2: appreciate the report from Louisiana. And I hope you get
- 18:19Speaker 2: to crack one with that boat pretty soon.
- 18:22Speaker 10: Yeah, i'd like to, would be would be nice.
- 18:26Speaker 5: H m.
- 18:53Speaker 9: Hm, h m hm.
- 19:00Speaker 3: We've got Reys Johnson on the phone right now and
- 19:02Speaker 3: he's been out in Kentucky, which is where he's from,
- 19:05Speaker 3: and he is just a big buck killer. He's always
- 19:08Speaker 3: finding big buck sheds and he's always finding a way
- 19:10Speaker 3: to get big bucks on the ground, and he's done
- 19:12Speaker 3: that recently in Kentucky. Reese, how's everything going, man, It's
- 19:16Speaker 3: been great.
- 19:17Speaker 8: We just wrapping up opening the weekend deer camp here
- 19:20Speaker 8: in Kentucky. Had quite a few guys in and the deer.
- 19:24Speaker 8: The deer didn't fare too well. The we had we had,
- 19:30Speaker 8: We're pretty we had.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Pretty good, a pretty good run here this week. They
- 19:33Speaker 5: were definitely moving around. Yeah.
- 19:35Speaker 8: I think, of course, it's left an ideal weather conditions.
- 19:38Speaker 8: One of the oddest novembers. I can recall as many
- 19:42Speaker 8: east winds as I run across it feels like I
- 19:45Speaker 8: think I don't think many people, especially in the southern half,
- 19:49Speaker 8: have enjoyed our warmer temperatures.
- 19:52Speaker 2: You know, we've been seeing.
- 19:53Speaker 8: What sixty five and seventy quite a bit. But but
- 19:56Speaker 8: the ret's gonna do what the Rut's gonna do. And
- 19:59Speaker 8: you know, they're they're they're moving around, they're doing their thing,
- 20:02Speaker 8: still happening. It seems like, you know, that first hour,
- 20:05Speaker 8: that last hour of kind of what you'd expect, lots
- 20:08Speaker 8: of night time activity, and so that of course makes
- 20:11Speaker 8: it a challenge I think for anyone, uh, this time
- 20:14Speaker 8: of the year, with this kind of November that we're having.
- 20:17Speaker 8: And so but we had, Yeah, we had a pretty
- 20:19Speaker 8: good run just sek with uh a lot of the
- 20:22Speaker 8: guys seeing seeing just mostly cruising, most cruising.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Okay, so with that, are you are you guys getting
- 20:28Speaker 3: into open areas and glassing some or are you sitting
- 20:31Speaker 3: in pinch points?
- 20:31Speaker 4: You sitting in thick stuff? What's the what's the game
- 20:34Speaker 4: plan there?
- 20:35Speaker 6: Uh?
- 20:36Speaker 8: Most of it was, you know, we've got a few
- 20:38Speaker 8: food plots kind of thing. We're set back, uh not
- 20:41Speaker 8: put the pressure on, you know, keep trying to keep
- 20:44Speaker 8: what we can keep alive where we can hopefully focus
- 20:47Speaker 8: on the target deer, uh that you know that we're
- 20:49Speaker 8: in thereafter the mature deer hopefully, And so that's really
- 20:52Speaker 8: kind of what we're We stayed out. You know, there
- 20:54Speaker 8: are a few pinch points where you know, there's a
- 20:56Speaker 8: creek bottom. One of the deer that came this week
- 20:59Speaker 8: was cruising two thirty nine in the afternoons along the
- 21:02Speaker 8: creek bottom. That was one of the one of the
- 21:04Speaker 8: five year olds we were looking for, and so we
- 21:06Speaker 8: were able to have a little success there. And so yeah,
- 21:09Speaker 8: we've not, in my opinion, of course, seen too much
- 21:12Speaker 8: of lockdown now they're they're definitely it definitely has happened,
- 21:16Speaker 8: But I don't think we're in the.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Thick of that just quite yet.
- 21:21Speaker 2: So a lot of people know you as a trail
- 21:22Speaker 2: camera guy for good reason. You're in a lot of cameras.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Are you getting a lot of this data from cameras,
- 21:27Speaker 2: like as far as ninetime movement and stuff? And then
- 21:30Speaker 2: like how does that strategy play into like the heat
- 21:32Speaker 2: of the rut.
- 21:34Speaker 8: Yeah, so so right now with all the cameras, I mean,
- 21:36Speaker 8: they're they're lacking on intel because the deer aren't doing
- 21:39Speaker 8: what they normally do.
- 21:40Speaker 2: You know, because the rut is so chaotic.
- 21:42Speaker 8: Yeah, it seems they're just you know, so it's very
- 21:44Speaker 8: difficult to take pertinent information from those cameras this time and.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Put it to use.
- 21:49Speaker 8: Uh, just being discommunicating with folks that are hunting, friends
- 21:51Speaker 8: are here in camp and that sort of thing, getting
- 21:54Speaker 8: getting to talk to people friends, you know, wherever they're
- 21:58Speaker 8: at locally, or what they're seeing, you know, right now,
- 22:01Speaker 8: I would put more stock in that than I would,
- 22:05Speaker 8: you know, what the cameras are saying, just because you know,
- 22:07Speaker 8: most of your cameras probably most everyone's got them on scrapes.
- 22:10Speaker 4: You might have them on an edge, you might have
- 22:12Speaker 4: them on a pinch.
- 22:13Speaker 8: Those deer they're doing things that there was a buck
- 22:16Speaker 8: And I live in a somewhat suburban setting, somewhat rural,
- 22:19Speaker 8: but there was a buck locked down here in the
- 22:21Speaker 8: yard right in my driveway, you know. So I mean
- 22:23Speaker 8: they're doing they're doing things they would never normally do.
- 22:25Speaker 7: Yeah, and so it's really hard to take that.
- 22:27Speaker 8: It's really hard to take that trail camera information and
- 22:30Speaker 8: apply it to what's physically happening out there, because they
- 22:33Speaker 8: don't know what they're doing.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Yes, sure, shield they're running hard.
- 22:36Speaker 2: So what if what if a hunter doesn't know what
- 22:38Speaker 2: he's doing because he has no data to go off of.
- 22:40Speaker 2: What's what's the move this week to Like, if you know,
- 22:42Speaker 2: if you're just kind of blind and you're just like,
- 22:45Speaker 2: I need to go just figure something out, what do
- 22:48Speaker 2: you do?
- 22:49Speaker 8: So nothing obviously beats up time in the woods just
- 22:53Speaker 8: being out there. You know, I'm anticipating that this week
- 22:55Speaker 8: is when lockdown is really gonna you know, if we
- 22:58Speaker 8: haven't entered.
- 22:58Speaker 5: It already, he's going to really come in to play.
- 23:00Speaker 8: So it's where's that big buck going to take that
- 23:02Speaker 8: dough and try to get.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Her away from other bucks as possible.
- 23:06Speaker 8: So my anticipation would be something some betting, something thick,
- 23:09Speaker 8: something off the wall that you can potentially not pressure
- 23:12Speaker 8: if that's the way you want.
- 23:13Speaker 7: To play it, or maybe this is the day that
- 23:15Speaker 7: you want.
- 23:16Speaker 8: To go make that aggressive move, get in there and
- 23:19Speaker 8: hope that it pays off.
- 23:20Speaker 10: M m hm.
- 23:21Speaker 4: That's good thoughts man.
- 23:22Speaker 3: So you know, with the warm temps, I know you
- 23:26Speaker 3: guys have still had success because of the rut. How
- 23:28Speaker 3: does it compare to this this coming week? I mean
- 23:31Speaker 3: what do you think on a scale of one to ten,
- 23:33Speaker 3: the Buck movement is going to be like then this
- 23:35Speaker 3: next week.
- 23:37Speaker 8: I'm gonna give it a seven.
- 23:39Speaker 4: Mm hmm.
- 23:40Speaker 8: You know it's not it's not everything we can we could,
- 23:42Speaker 8: you know, hope for otherwise condition wise, but it is
- 23:46Speaker 8: still November, the week, the week of November that we
- 23:50Speaker 8: we all wait for. Looking at the ten day nothing
- 23:53Speaker 8: is impressive, very bland weather.
- 23:56Speaker 5: You know, we're not seeing anything.
- 23:58Speaker 4: We're not seeing anything.
- 24:00Speaker 8: Old have been fifty five for the next ten days,
- 24:02Speaker 8: so you know, so that makes it really difficult.
- 24:04Speaker 5: So you're looking at hours.
- 24:05Speaker 8: In the tree and you know, really uh, I think
- 24:09Speaker 8: the first the first hour in the last hour will.
- 24:11Speaker 7: Be the most productive.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Wow, Okay, that sounds great. Man.
- 24:15Speaker 3: So a seven man just slightly above the Midwest six.
- 24:18Speaker 4: I like it a lot.
- 24:19Speaker 3: I think it's a good time to be out. And
- 24:21Speaker 3: I appreciate the report from Kentucky Reese.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Well, best luck there.
- 24:25Speaker 8: Everyone, and and just it's that it's that best time
- 24:29Speaker 8: of year Sember that's out there.
- 24:30Speaker 4: That's it, man, Thank you.
- 24:32Speaker 2: On the phone, I've got Adam Moore. He is the
- 24:34Speaker 2: gear editor for me Eater and he's been doing some
- 24:36Speaker 2: hunting Mississippi. Adam, what's happening, bro?
- 24:39Speaker 5: Hey, KC.
- 24:39Speaker 7: How's it going?
- 24:40Speaker 2: Oh, it's going good. I'm just looking at the planes
- 24:43Speaker 2: and how windy and kind of warm it he is.
- 24:45Speaker 2: How's it Mississippi right now?
- 24:47Speaker 7: Uh, it's it's pretty warm. Actually, it's been muggy the
- 24:51Speaker 7: past few weeks here, so no ideal hunting weather. But
- 24:55Speaker 7: but yeah, it could be It's a.
- 24:57Speaker 2: It could be worse, Yeah, for sure. I mean at
- 24:58Speaker 2: least it's hunting season, right. So in your area, what
- 25:03Speaker 2: are typical rut dates? And then what are the deer
- 25:06Speaker 2: doing right now?
- 25:08Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 25:08Speaker 7: So you know, in Mississippi we've got the weird rut
- 25:12Speaker 7: compared to the rest of the country, so you'll see
- 25:14Speaker 7: a lot of varied dates by regions of the state.
- 25:18Speaker 7: So up in the Delta, right, which is kind of
- 25:20Speaker 7: the big buck hub of the state, that could be early
- 25:23Speaker 7: December or even the week of Thanksgiving, a lot of
- 25:27Speaker 7: hunting where I do. In the central part of the state,
- 25:31Speaker 7: it's typically the week after Christmas, first week of January,
- 25:34Speaker 7: that's New Year's Day is always the time I want
- 25:37Speaker 7: to be in the woods. And then actually in the
- 25:39Speaker 7: southern part of the state where I live, rutting actions
- 25:42Speaker 7: usually going on early February.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Gotcha.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Yeah, cool, And so right now you're in full fledged
- 25:48Speaker 2: pre rut I guess when you're out there.
- 25:49Speaker 7: Huh, Well, it's a lot like mid October. So we
- 25:55Speaker 7: have this weird period from the beginning of October to
- 25:58Speaker 7: really now when it's probably you know, the best way
- 26:01Speaker 7: I can put it is like October for the rest
- 26:04Speaker 7: of you know, the deer country. So deer still hitting acorns,
- 26:07Speaker 7: they're really just now hitting scrapes, opening those back up.
- 26:10Speaker 7: You're starting to see a lot more rubs. Found a
- 26:14Speaker 7: lot of fresh scrapes this weekend. So that's kind of
- 26:16Speaker 7: where we're at. Not not to the pre right yet,
- 26:19Speaker 7: just still in that you know, that early October feeding pattern.
- 26:25Speaker 3: So so bed to feed. So I mean, what is
- 26:28Speaker 3: what is the daylight movement looking like? Is it's still
- 26:31Speaker 3: pretty much right at the end of shooting light every day?
- 26:35Speaker 7: Yeah, pretty much, especially with the warmer tempered temperatures and stuff.
- 26:40Speaker 7: You know, they don't have to move a ton down
- 26:42Speaker 7: here to find water, even though it's just sort of everywhere,
- 26:46Speaker 7: so water is not really a it's kind of a
- 26:49Speaker 7: non factor because it's really everywhere, but they're hitting a
- 26:51Speaker 7: lot of white oats. We've actually had a really good
- 26:54Speaker 7: acre and crop this year, so white oaks, swamp chest nuts,
- 26:58Speaker 7: red oats really won't be in the play until December.
- 27:02Speaker 7: But yeah, they're kind of on that bed to feed.
- 27:05Speaker 7: But it's been pretty consistent from what I've seen in
- 27:09Speaker 7: my short time in the field this year and from
- 27:12Speaker 7: a few cameras.
- 27:12Speaker 3: So, so, would you prefer to be close to betting
- 27:16Speaker 3: or would you prefer to be near a scrape?
- 27:20Speaker 7: I'd probably say close to bedding, just because you know,
- 27:24Speaker 7: a lot of betting down here is going to look
- 27:26Speaker 7: like young time tickets, and so the deer are going
- 27:30Speaker 7: to be in there really until about that last thirty
- 27:33Speaker 7: minutes of shooting light scrapes, they're, like I said, they're
- 27:37Speaker 7: just starting to hit those. But still I think a
- 27:40Speaker 7: lot of that's at night time anyway.
- 27:42Speaker 2: So you know, we kind of live in a golf
- 27:44Speaker 2: state as well, in uh, lots of weather systems, lots
- 27:48Speaker 2: of kind of strange things that go on this time
- 27:50Speaker 2: of year, between tropical depressions and hurricanes and all this
- 27:53Speaker 2: and that and the other. Right, and you know, I
- 27:55Speaker 2: know that there's some stuff going on out of the
- 27:57Speaker 2: golf and stuff that's moved in. How do you hunt
- 28:01Speaker 2: kind of around weather like that? You know, like, are
- 28:03Speaker 2: you gonna hunt in the rain, You're gonna hunt it
- 28:05Speaker 2: after the rain or does that affect the deer?
- 28:09Speaker 7: Yeah? I love to hunt right after rain. I haven't.
- 28:12Speaker 7: I've never had much luck you know, during during rain
- 28:17Speaker 7: storms or anything like that. But I love I do
- 28:20Speaker 7: a lot of still hunting. So we have a long
- 28:22Speaker 7: gun season down here too, so I do do a
- 28:25Speaker 7: lot of still hunting, and that's just perfect for after
- 28:27Speaker 7: a after a rain comes through, so it will keep
- 28:31Speaker 7: a lot of people out of the woods, even you know,
- 28:34Speaker 7: this time of year and we have you know, warmer
- 28:36Speaker 7: attempts and stuff like that. So uh still love to go,
- 28:40Speaker 7: you know, regardless of what the weather is. But if
- 28:42Speaker 7: I had to pick it, would it would certainly be
- 28:44Speaker 7: like that right after the rain breaks or you know,
- 28:48Speaker 7: the day after.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, for sure. Okay, So as we look forward
- 28:52Speaker 2: to the next week, you know, it's not quite the
- 28:53Speaker 2: rut and those scrapes are opening up.
- 28:55Speaker 5: Though.
- 28:57Speaker 2: If you had to rank buck movement on a scale
- 28:59Speaker 2: of one to ten during the daylight, what are you
- 29:01Speaker 2: going to rank it for Mississippi.
- 29:03Speaker 7: Oh it's gonna be I'll say it three, and that's
- 29:07Speaker 7: like optimistic.
- 29:08Speaker 2: I like it, dude, Thank you for a realistic number.
- 29:10Speaker 2: I mean, that's what we need, right, People need to
- 29:13Speaker 2: know what's actually going on in the woods. And that's
- 29:15Speaker 2: a pretty good represent representation of it. So thank you, Adam.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Really appreciate the information.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Dude.
- 29:20Speaker 7: Yeah, I would say, you know, it's you know, if
- 29:23Speaker 7: the folks down south like hold on to those vacation days,
- 29:27Speaker 7: better days, You're coming.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Sounds good, brother.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 29:31Speaker 2: You know, the hype is still riding high, man. It
- 29:34Speaker 2: is like absolutely still a rut. There's a lot of
- 29:36Speaker 2: deer going down around the country, and I think I mean,
- 29:39Speaker 2: we heard from a couple killers today. I think that
- 29:42Speaker 2: people really undervalue the second half of the month. And
- 29:46Speaker 2: I can tell you that I've had some success in
- 29:49Speaker 2: the second half the month. Well you brought it up
- 29:50Speaker 2: all ago off here on the twenty third of November.
- 29:53Speaker 2: You can go watch this video that will link below.
- 29:56Speaker 2: I kill one of my biggest public plan bucks ever
- 29:59Speaker 2: with some pretty aggressive calling strategies, and it's something that
- 30:02Speaker 2: I think that you can really use to your advantage,
- 30:04Speaker 2: especially kind of like when Anthony referenced those books are
- 30:07Speaker 2: scrambling at that time of year, trying to make sure
- 30:10Speaker 2: they can still find a few dos. So that's a
- 30:13Speaker 2: pretty good thing to check out if you want a
- 30:15Speaker 2: little inspiration to see, you know something that worked for me.
- 30:18Speaker 3: You may not remember, but on that same night I
- 30:21Speaker 3: had like a forty five yard encounter with the ranch buck.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Pretty good, pretty good day. So yeah, that's actually a
- 30:28Speaker 2: really cool story too. We'll link to that one as well.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Just a couple good RUT videos for you to watch. Also,
- 30:34Speaker 2: if you are more of the reading type, if you
- 30:37Speaker 2: can read, it would be good to go over to
- 30:39Speaker 2: Wired to Hunt.
- 30:40Speaker 4: I don't know if these Wired to Hunt listeners can read.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I bet you they can read this read they're
- 30:46Speaker 2: fairly they're fairly small words. Dylan Tramp actually has a
- 30:49Speaker 2: pretty intriguing article that I think is a pretty good
- 30:52Speaker 2: thing this time of year. You know, the RUT is
- 30:55Speaker 2: like the super Bowl for all of us, right. I
- 30:57Speaker 2: think I've heard Mark even use that that allergy and
- 31:00Speaker 2: so they're all looking forward to it. Uh, and we
- 31:03Speaker 2: can get really complicated and try to, like I don't know,
- 31:07Speaker 2: bend our brains really hard to figure out how to
- 31:10Speaker 2: kill a deer and his article is actually five tips
- 31:12Speaker 2: to simplify the rut and I think it's it's it's
- 31:14Speaker 2: pretty good idea, man Like, it doesn't have to be
- 31:17Speaker 2: over complicated. You can hunt, have fun, make some good choices,
- 31:20Speaker 2: and kill a big buck. And uh, I think I'm
- 31:23Speaker 2: gonna link to that in the show notes as well. Uh,
