Transcript
- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech podcast.
- 0:43SPEAKER_04: My name is Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: My co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: Tristan, I'm sorry I didn't edit last week's episode.
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: Well, uh, we just kind of uh left all of our sadness in the last week's episode, I suppose.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: Um we got the bit without the treasure listeners having to deal with it, I guess.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: If that's how we're gonna look at the bright side on that.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: But if you're gonna ask me how I'm feeling, the word's anxious.
- 1:09SPEAKER_04: Yes, the word is anxious.
- 1:11SPEAKER_04: Obviously, the saga that has been uh what is Chris Beard going to decide um is has been uh not the best for Texas Tech fans, including you and myself.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: We have been very anxious uh to see his decision.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: Obviously, Shaka Smart let go, or not let go.
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: He technically left on his own uh to take the Marquette job.
- 1:37SPEAKER_04: Uh it was probably kind of a nudge nudge.
- 1:40SPEAKER_04: Hey, we're gonna fire you.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: So, you know, look at other options sort of thing with him.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: Um, and he but he took it.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: He took the Marquette job, so the Texas job is now open.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: It is something we have been kind of looking towards for years, I would say, uh, because you know, Texas fans have not been high on Shaka for probably about three or four years now.
- 1:59SPEAKER_04: Um, and you know, I I it's tough because there's I can see both sides of it.
- 2:07SPEAKER_04: I really can.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: I can see I can understand Chris Beard if he would want to go back and coach his alma mater, but I would also be extremely freaking upset if he decided to go and leave what he's built here for sure.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: And every single season it's uh UT fans are like, Well, I just can't wait to get finally get Chris Beard.
- 2:27SPEAKER_03: You know, is this season we finally get Chris Beard?
- 2:29SPEAKER_03: That's been a recurring theme for like a couple of years at least now.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: Uh UT fans think that he's just a UT coach and waiting across the fan base there.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Um but I guess before we too dig too far into it, do you think that UT letting Shaka go was justified?
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: Or do you think it's kind of um a fan appeasement move, if you know what I mean?
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: He had no, did he have he either had one or zero NCAA tournament wins in his tenure at Texas, and he was there for six years.
- 3:01SPEAKER_04: I understand zero, yeah, it's zero NCA tournament wins at a program like Texas in six years.
- 3:08SPEAKER_04: Yes, he deserved to be let it was extremely justified for him, uh, or for them to not want him to come back.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: Again, he wasn't fired, he left on his own, I guess, uh on his own uh you know, say.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: I I I I asked that because I mean this season was pretty solid for UT.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, obviously they they went out in a hilariously awesome way in the NCAA tournament against Abling Christian.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: Um, but they they did win the conference tournament in the Big 12, which isn't easy to do.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: And apparently that's the first time UT's ever done it.
- 3:41SPEAKER_03: Um that's the first time UT's brought hardware home in a long time for anything in in basketball.
- 3:47SPEAKER_03: So I just I'm kind of scratching my head with that.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, but like six years is a long time without winning an NCAA tournament.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: And I know you say, you know, at UT, you know, obviously that's that's not acceptable, but is the pressure there in basketball?
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Like, or are we just kind of just deep going to the default to that because it's UT and they just it's just kind of we're kind of looking at it through a football lens.
- 4:09SPEAKER_04: I think the pressure is there for every sport at Texas.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: I think uh, you know, obviously football is their number one sport.
- 4:16SPEAKER_04: That's the you know, that's what they care about the most, and that's what most schools care about the most.
- 4:21SPEAKER_04: But at a at a school at like Texas with a fan base that is spoiled, that is, you know, arrogant, I think a lot of the time, uh, they expect wins and they expect uh hardware, they expect championships, they expect, you know, that all that kind of stuff.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: And whether it's bad and and it's not as much of a priority, I guess, in basketball versus football, but it's still a priority and very high.
- 4:47SPEAKER_04: Like it's different for a school like Texas Tech or a school like maybe in Iowa State or you know, West Virginia, something like that, than Texas.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: It just is, and that's I mean, you know, it it's kind of a uh testament to what they've built over the years, but also I I think back to the shaka point with was it justified or not, that really leads to how important it is to win in the postseason in college basketball and primarily the NCAA tournament itself.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: If you don't get NCAA tournament wins, you're not gonna keep your job, it just won't happen because you know you could be at a school like imagine if you're a Duke and you get no NCAA tournament wins.
- 5:30SPEAKER_04: You know, obviously they've had Coach K for forever, but uh eventually he's gonna retire.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: And if this if a guy comes in as the head coach of Duke and doesn't win in two years, I bet he's fired, you know.
- 5:41SPEAKER_04: And it's the same kind of thing, I think, with Texas, even if they don't have that storied basketball program like their football program.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, Duke is probably an extreme example.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: Uh comparing Duke basketball is like Alabama football equivalent.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Um, but I I told I get what you're saying.
- 6:00SPEAKER_03: I'll just I the only reason why I just wanted to lay down the foundation of the shock at talk is because you know, we're how does this kind of relate to what kind of hire they want to make, you know?
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: Um, because obviously they're gonna want to, you know, the UT fans are gonna want to expect a name.
- 6:15SPEAKER_03: Uh they usually you know it has to be a name.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: Um, and I mean by like just not they can't really go for a mid-major, you know, up and coming this time.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: I feel like they're probably gonna dig for somebody like a Chris Beard.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: So um on like you know, I mean, Shaka was Shaka was successful at Virginia uh Commonwealth.
- 6:34SPEAKER_04: Shaka was a name, though.
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: He was a guy who was constantly winning games in the tournament, and like he was on everybody's list when you know open jobs came available.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: Everybody knew he was gonna move on from VCU eventually, so he was a name, and that's why UT got him.
- 6:49SPEAKER_03: Uh the the on his feet, he he he got hired away.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, with the quote big air quotations, yeah, but he wasn't let go and then hired.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: He was, you know, he kind of moved jobs, so he's obviously still respected.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: He's he's always been a respected coach, it's just he couldn't get it done at UT.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: And I think primarily with all the talent that UT had during Shaka's tenure.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, they had guys that are gonna be awesome in the NBA.
- 7:17SPEAKER_04: They've had this was his best team by far that they that they've had in Shaka's tenure, this last year's team, or I guess technically still this year's team.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, guy, I mean, you don't get a team with with guys like Andrew Jones and uh Jericho Sims and uh Matt Coleman and Kai Jones and all those guys.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, they they should have really gone farther.
- 7:39SPEAKER_04: A lot of people had them picked in the final four.
- 7:41SPEAKER_04: I mean, they had high expectations and Shaka didn't deliver, and uh, you know, I can understand why he uh agreed to leave.
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: I think there was a lot of nudge nudge, kind of you know, get the heck out of here type of deal going on with the with with the Texas officials for sure.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, you're you're totally right.
- 7:59SPEAKER_03: So it's it's just obviously I uh I I'm thinking about where UT goes from here because it's obviously this relates directly to Chris Beard.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: And there's some things that kind of cycle through my head.
- 8:10SPEAKER_03: Now, I know that you uh this I know our listeners are probably like, what is this, a UT podcast right now?
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: Um, but this is obviously the main point of discussion right now.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so um UT just had to dump a lot of cash into their football program, and I understand it's UT, they have unlimited money, but it's still a lot of money, and it's too um it towards the athletic department, and it a lot of it went to the thing they care substantially more about.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: I don't think the boosters pony up like they do for football for basketball.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: I just don't see that happening.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: They they really have to bring the dump truck for Chris Beard, and I don't know if they go from back-to-back garbage trucks fulls of cash from football and basketball in the same year.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: These these their pockets aren't literally unlimited.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: I I know there's that that reputation that they have big deep pockets, and that's obviously true, but they still had to dump a lot of cash into the football.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm just I'm adding a little positivity to this right now, is what I'm trying to say.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, no, I'm not I listen.
- 9:20SPEAKER_04: I I think if we're I'm just gonna say right now, I think Chris Beard stays at Texas Tech, but to your point, they would have to pay Chris Beard more than they would pay Steve Sarkeesian right now to get him on staff because he's already Chris Beard is already the fourth highest paid coach in college basketball right now at Texas Tech.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: So Texas is going to really have to bring the bag in.
- 9:42SPEAKER_03: And they have a top bet, they can't match it.
- 9:44SPEAKER_03: They have a top bet for him to leave.
- 9:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:47SPEAKER_04: I don't see why he would leave for the same amount of money.
- 9:50SPEAKER_04: He I just haven't seen that from Chris Beard, his loyalty to Texas.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: He's always had obviously has respect for every program he plays, and he probably has a little bit more respect for Texas since he went there.
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: But you know, you also look at that.
- 10:05SPEAKER_04: He spent four years in Texas, he spent 16 at Texas Tech total.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: So, you know, where does your loyalty lie when you're Chris Beard?
- 10:13SPEAKER_04: And so I don't think to your back to back to the Texas, are they gonna pay enough?
- 10:18SPEAKER_04: The University of Texas paying their basketball coach more than their football coach will not happen in my eyes.
- 10:24SPEAKER_04: I just don't see them looking at that number and being like, Yes, you know, we care this much about basketball, even though we can't get fans in the in the stadium.
- 10:35SPEAKER_04: We the you know, our following is not nearly as big as our football program.
- 10:39SPEAKER_04: It's just not, I don't think, something that UT is going to be excited about doing.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, I I brought up the money point to add an argument towards that he is staying, and I believe he is staying as well.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: Um, and Chris, I don't know if this is looking too deep into this, but Chris Beard is already at a life-changing amount of money.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: I don't think him taking a small raise, I mean we're saying small, like they're adding another million on top of his his his contract.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: Is that more?
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: Is that is that more life-changing money to change your life at this point?
- 11:10SPEAKER_03: You know, he's at that point where this man is a multimillionaire set for life and he lives in Lubbock, Texas, Texas, substantially cheaper than Austin, Texas.
- 11:18SPEAKER_03: I I'm I'm I might be looking too deep into this.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: I'm just thinking I don't think money can play too much into the discussion with Chris Beard.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: I know money talks, but I I just whenever you're the fourth highest paid coach in college basketball, what's the difference between that being the highest paid coach and the fourth on in the grand scheme of things?
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm trying to get at.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: No, I understand what you're saying completely.
- 11:40SPEAKER_04: Um, I think I've I've always thought the only reason he's gonna leave is because of his alumni status and because he is he's loyal to Texas and has always wanted this job.
- 11:51SPEAKER_04: I think that's the only reason he would leave.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: Because, like you said, there's really not a difference, and especially with a guy like Chris Beard, who doesn't have the ego of a dude who just wants to be the highest paid guy, you know, the highest paid coach in the in the entire NCAA.
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: So um, yeah, I think I think the only reason he would leave is because he just really this is his dream job, and that's what he has always wanted.
- 12:16SPEAKER_04: And as heartbreaking as that would be for Texas Tech fans, you know, imagine if you're in his position and you know, you went to Texas Tech and you've built this program at uh, I don't know, a program like maybe like I don't know, say Florida or something, and South Florida has you know is getting into championship status and is getting great recruits and getting awesome, but you still have that Texas Tech loyalty from when you went there.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I I have some sympathy for Chris Beard because this is a tough decision, no doubt, for the guy.
- 12:49SPEAKER_04: So um, but yeah, uh I all this to say I don't think Texas, I don't think Chris Beard is leaving Texas Tech.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: I I really don't.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: Um uh the thing that we need to keep an eye out, and right today is March 31st, tomorrow is April 1st, also known as 4-1, 4-1, you know, the whole Chris Beard Texas Tech basketball mantra.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: But uh on April 1st, his buyout goes down a million dollars, uh, which is significant because during this timeline, you know, he we could have figured this out already, and he's just waiting, you know, possibly for the buyout or UT officials are waiting till April 1st so they don't have to pay that extra million dollars.
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: But it's also 4-1 day, and that would be a major kick in the balls to UT if Chris Beer just decided, hey, today's 4-1.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: I'm loyal to Texas Tech, I always have been.
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: We're building something here, I'm gonna be here forever.
- 13:42SPEAKER_04: So I, you know, it's up in the air.
- 13:45SPEAKER_04: I think something's gonna happen tomorrow, though.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: That might top his like making it to the national championship game, honestly.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that would that would be so awesome if he did that.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: And I could see Chris Beer doing that, not even just out of malice, just as like an amp up for the Texas Tech fans, you know.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, so yeah, I just wanted to cover the base at UT, like the position there, there, you know, shock uh how it compares to Shaka situation and the current situation that that the athletic department is in general there.
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: Um, and remember, like it's comparing uh Texas basketball to Texas Tech basketball now, we do have the better facilities right now.
- 14:21SPEAKER_03: Like our we have the better arena, we have the better job.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we we are the better job right now, and we have the better facilities, and we we have a better fan base than they do right now.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: Um, and then and the city of Lubbock is the most behind a coach they can possibly be.
- 14:37SPEAKER_03: And I don't even think if Chris Beard came here and kicked ass in Austin, I don't see the city of Austin rallying behind Chris Beard.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: It's just not the same kind of town.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: Lubbock's a college town.
- 14:48SPEAKER_04: So coaching at the University of Texas is like coaching the Dallas Cowboys.
- 14:52SPEAKER_04: It's you're always gonna have that added layer of pressure because they're such a big program.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: They're one of you know, they're a story program, they've had you know championships in the past and all that kind of stuff.
- 15:03SPEAKER_04: Why would you leave something where you're building you?
- 15:06SPEAKER_04: I mean, Chris Beard could be our Coach K.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: Coach, like Coach Beard could be our Dean Smith, like those type of guys, like a program builder to make us, and he's already made us one of a contender every single year, you know.
- 15:21SPEAKER_04: The last two years uh, you know, have been average.
- 15:24SPEAKER_04: I I'll say average, uh, not what we wanted.
- 15:28SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, he took a freaking team to the championship game at Texas Tech.
- 15:34SPEAKER_04: Like that's never happened, and nobody could have ever imagined that before Chris Beard got here.
- 15:39SPEAKER_04: So uh it it would stun me if he decided to leave everything that he's built here.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: This is his program.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: Like, I know we had Bob Knight here before, and if anything, that helps our cause for Chris Beard, but it this is Texas Tech is Chris Beard's program.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: Like he he could go down, he he will go down as the greatest coach we've ever had, and he can really turn this into a monster, like you were just saying.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: And I I just don't see the same vibe happening at UT because this is this is how I kind of look at it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: He goes to UT and he wins a lot of games, it's just expected, you know, it's not like a it's not like a gift, it's not like a surprise.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: Like it's not like the fans are eternally grateful for what he's doing for their program.
- 16:26SPEAKER_03: It's just like, yeah, we're Texas, this is what's supposed to be happening.
- 16:29SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's not the same vibe, and this town itself obviously isn't the same vibe.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: And I've seen this thrown around a bit, and I kind of agree with the the term is like Lubbock's a blue-collar town, and Chris Beard's a blue-collar guy, and you really get that with the way he acts.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: Incredibly humble, down to earth, fun and rowdy, not too good for anything, you know, and just an all-around awesome dude.
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: He's I don't think he matches the Austin vibe at all.
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: He I'm surprised he went to Texas, right?
- 16:58SPEAKER_04: Like, like honestly, he seems like he was a Texas Tech student.
- 17:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, really.
- 17:02SPEAKER_04: He seems like he was born and raised and you know, lived in Lubbock when he was a little kid and everything like that.
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: But um, just look at the programs that he's coached.
- 17:10SPEAKER_04: Angelo State, you know, he coached at Mick Murray in Abilene, Little Rock, like he's taken jobs and he's loved every single place that he's coached, and he really embraces the town and the culture.
- 17:22SPEAKER_04: And I really think we are a destination, you know.
- 17:26SPEAKER_04: We have shown that we can make it to the highest of high points in college basketball and back it, and back it.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we have the fan base, we have the money we have paid him.
- 17:36SPEAKER_04: He's the fourth highest paid college basketball coach right now.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: Like, we have the money, we are a top-tier basketball program right now.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: So, um, I uh yeah, and this is just all going back to if he leaves, it's because he's always wanted the Texas job.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: I think that is literally the only reason.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: See, this is how I looked at it whenever this this uh this talk started starting.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: We just listed this paragraph of why he stays, and then one reason why he goes.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: I guess you can kind of say two reasons why he goes.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: One, because it's where he went to school, and two, it's kind of where he got his coaching started a little bit.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, but other than that, it's completely in our favor.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: No, I agree.
- 18:23SPEAKER_03: Um, I guess you could throw a third, maybe a little more money, but I I don't even think that's a factor, really.
- 18:27SPEAKER_04: It it's really just the the fact that you can say you're the highest paid coach in college basketball, I guess.
- 18:33SPEAKER_04: You know, it's not like he's he's scrapping for cash these days.
- 18:37SPEAKER_04: No, um, but another thing that you probably miss because you've been off social media, uh, he changed his Twitter header to the graphic when he was first hired at Texas Tech.
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think that's more than just a it's more than something.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: You know, I don't think I don't think he does that without thinking something in there.
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: Uh I don't know what it is.
- 19:03SPEAKER_04: Maybe maybe I'm reaching and but I that says something for for you to change your header to Texas Tech, it it really shows that this is what he wanted, and this is where he's content and happy.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think it's like you know, whenever you put it that way, it kind of sounds a little symbolic.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: Like it's kind of like look, look at where we started and look where we're at now.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: Let's keep this going kind of vibe for sure.
- 19:27SPEAKER_03: You know, I and it's just the guy represents Texas Tech now, and I just really don't see that happening at UT.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: I don't think he can ever represent the University of Texas because no matter what, if Sark goes and wins like the Big 12 or something like that, I'll be like, There's the base of UT.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: It's Sark and whoever his quarterback is.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: It'll never be Chris Beard.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: I just don't think that's what's gonna happen.
- 19:50SPEAKER_04: It won't be.
- 19:51SPEAKER_04: He's he's the face of Texas Tech right now.
- 19:53SPEAKER_04: Him and him and Tim Tad, like, but baseball is just not as big of a revenue sport or just a you know, we do we do awesome in baseball and we love baseball, but uh it's just not you know the the attack.
- 20:02SPEAKER_04: It's not college basketball, yeah.
- 20:04SPEAKER_04: It's it's college football and then college basketball, and then baseball, you know, yeah, and then baseball.
- 20:08SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, so you we'll see how it goes.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: Maybe by the time you're listening to this podcast, he may have made a decision, and all this conversation would have been for not, but we're gonna try to get this episode out before his decision so you can get you can kind of hear our thoughts on on the whole ordeal.
- 20:26SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, it it's been it's been anxiety ridden, uh, for sure, the last couple days.
- 20:32SPEAKER_04: Um, and and we were just we were just I I didn't like it.
- 20:37SPEAKER_04: I knew this was gonna happen because I did not think Shaka Smart was gonna be there for much longer.
- 20:42SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh you know it's it still hurts, and it's we were gonna come face to face with this eventually, like it was always gonna happen.
- 20:50SPEAKER_03: We were always gonna come face to face with him, maybe going to UT.
- 20:53SPEAKER_03: This, whenever we hired him, we said that we may come face to face with him going to you back to UT.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: But here's another non-chan.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: Well, I guess I don't know if you call this a non-tangible, another thing to really consider.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: Chris Beard is a huge family man, yeah.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: And his family's in West Texas, his fiance got a has her high school job in the Lubbock area.
- 21:15SPEAKER_04: Well, now she did resign.
- 21:17SPEAKER_04: She did, she did.
- 21:19SPEAKER_04: She I it was either after this like last volleyball season or something, but I remember seeing some where she resigned from coaching volleyball.
- 21:28SPEAKER_04: Um, so I you know that I know people have brought that up, so I just want to clear that up.
- 21:33SPEAKER_04: That she does not have a job, I think, in West Texas right now.
- 21:38SPEAKER_04: But she is she coached in Lubbock for a long time.
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: His daughter is still not off to college yet, I'm pretty sure.
- 21:44SPEAKER_04: His is youngest.
- 21:46SPEAKER_04: So he still has ties in West Texas.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: There, I guess uh the woman doesn't have to work a day in her life ever again.
- 21:52SPEAKER_03: So, first of all, yeah, yeah.
- 21:54SPEAKER_03: So she and she may just be kind of done with that, you know.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, she may not want to coach anymore, and that's totally cool, or maybe she Wants to coach maybe like a lower, maybe not a high high school job, which is probably maybe a little more pressure than she wants now.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's again her his life is there, is what I'm getting at.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, and being a family man, obviously, your family comes before yourself, and he definitely has you know that man has that mentality.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: So, um, obviously, he may think.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, uh, there's an argument to be made that maybe he thinks Austin's a better place for his family to be.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: I don't know why you would make that argument, but um you've lived there.
- 22:28SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: I know, but you know what I mean.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: It's just like if if you think for whatever reason your family's better off there, like you have better opportunities for your family if you have that job there.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: I I don't see that being the case.
- 22:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, I mean, so especially if you know his whole family's in West Texas, why uproot them if you don't have to?
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: Um that's just another thing I wanted to bring up.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: It's just like how deep his roots are, and I just I I feel really good about him staying.
- 22:53SPEAKER_04: It's funny because we could have gone a lot of different ways with this podcast talking about this subject.
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: We could have just you know been shitting on UT the entire time, which we both wanted to do, but we're also trying to be level-headed on this and try to understand his perspective and try to understand where he's coming from because this is a tough decision.
- 23:12SPEAKER_04: It is it's like it's like if we were coaches and we wanted to come back and we were like Texas Tech offered us a job, you know, absolutely like coming from an alumni standpoint.
- 23:21SPEAKER_04: So uh, you know, I I I hope he stays, obviously.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: Everybody in West Texas hope he stays, including all of the local businesses that have been offering him.
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: This man, Chris Beard, if he decides to coach in tech at Texas Tech still and remain here, is never has to pay for another meal in his life, to pay for anything, roofing covered, carpet.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: If you're gonna if you have your mama's a wreck called carpet tech, yeah, that's free.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah um he needs a pool cleaned or something, done.
- 23:53SPEAKER_03: Like it's every single business in Lubbock is just throwing themselves at him, yeah.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: And again, that's what I that's what I meant.
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: Like the whole city in the community is completely behind him, and he would never have that in Austin.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: I just really don't, no matter what.
- 24:06SPEAKER_04: And how are you gonna deny Patrick Mahomes telling you to stay?
- 24:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, what the heck, dude?
- 24:11SPEAKER_04: You can't do that.
- 24:12SPEAKER_04: You just famous athlete.
- 24:14SPEAKER_04: Come on, he's the greatest football player of all time, probably, right?
- 24:18SPEAKER_03: That's not even an argument anymore.
- 24:20SPEAKER_04: No, it was a bomb tradey, not that big bum ass tradey, but no, but yeah, um, we'll be seeing, we'll be seeing in the coming days, hopefully sooner rather than later.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: Uh his decision whether he decides to stay at Texas Tech or go and coach the terrible Longhorns.
- 24:40SPEAKER_04: Um, but you know, positive vibes only, good vibes, and you know no matter what.
- 24:45SPEAKER_03: Oh, I don't mean to cut you off.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: I'm just saying like no matter what happens is I mean, love for him forever.
- 24:51SPEAKER_03: I absolutely'm a fun, it's been couldn't have asked for a funner ride.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: So I just hope he can stay on it.
- 24:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I and I think we will.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: So uh keep your heads up, Texas Tech fans.
- 25:00SPEAKER_04: If you're worried about it, I'm worried as well, but it's just because you know I'm I'm a worryful person.
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: It's our biggest rival and had the literally the biggest pocket in all of college sports, so it's just that's the only thing.
- 25:13SPEAKER_04: I will say I will cry.
- 25:15SPEAKER_04: I think I will cry.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: I I think I might tear up as well, honestly.
- 25:18SPEAKER_04: I I would be so I'd be devastated.
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: The memories had just been too much fun.
- 25:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he needs to keep it going.
- 25:24SPEAKER_04: So Chris Beard, keep it going.
- 25:27SPEAKER_04: Um, but let's let's move on to our second subject.
- 25:30SPEAKER_04: You know, uh obviously Chris Beard has been you know the biggest talk around Texas Tech sports lately.
- 25:36SPEAKER_04: He will, he's the best.
- 25:37SPEAKER_04: He rocks, please stay.
- 25:39SPEAKER_04: But we have started spring football at Texas Tech, a sport that has not been doing so well lately, but I have a lot of positivity going into this season, especially with the quarterback position.
- 25:54SPEAKER_04: Seems like we're friggin' stacked, dude.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: We absolutely are.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: Our QB room is once again.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think it's been it's better than like it's been better now than it has been in a couple of years.
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: It looks really good right now, dude.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Um, right now it looks like Tyler is the favorite.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: The transfer from Oregon.
- 26:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, I just don't want to mess up his last name.
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: Is this good?
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: Chuck.
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: It's Chuck.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it doesn't, it's not spelt like that.
- 26:17SPEAKER_04: It's like S-H-O-U-G-H, and it's pronounced Chuck.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so I I've been I've been reading a few articles saying that he looks like he's the favorite.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: Uh he's been getting a lot of talk uh across um uh sports platforms, including our local ones.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: Um, and like you were saying as well, looks like Columbia might be the second in um in the in the in the running, which is a little surprising to me because I the whole time I was thinking it was between Tyler and Barron.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: Um, but it looks like maybe the young guys are kind of in third, you know, together, kind of in a mix.
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: So I don't know, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: It makes sense when you think about it.
- 26:51SPEAKER_04: It's the beginning stages of camp, which always means experience is gonna be getting the most reps early on.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: Um, so of course, Columbi is and Matt Wells and and Sonny Cumbie.
- 27:03SPEAKER_04: I've been kind of keeping up with the with the press conferences and everything like that after Springball.
- 27:07SPEAKER_04: Uh and and they have a lot of good things to say about Columbi.
- 27:10SPEAKER_04: And he showed some signs last year, and with this new system, with with Cumby's new offensive system coming in, uh you do you never know.
- 27:18SPEAKER_04: Uh, I I think we're all a little down on Columbi right now after some of the performances last season, but you know, Tyler Shuck coming in here, Oregon transfer.
- 27:29SPEAKER_04: He's a big name.
- 27:30SPEAKER_04: He was a four-star recruit out of high school, and then Baron Morton, another four-star recruit, you know, super young guy, West Texas guy.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: So uh it's just it's it's hard from a fans perspective to not, you know, want a certain guy to go in over Henry Columbi.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: And I understand that, but you know, these guys I trust Cumby more than I trust Wells at this point.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: Uh so is so if Sonny Cumby decides, hey, this is the guy, I'm cool with riding with that.
- 28:02SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: That that's that's the point that's perfectly segues into what I was gonna say.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: I think the reason why Tyler Shuck is the favorite is because I think Sonny Cumby really likes what he sees with the arm and the legs.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: I think the Sonny Cumby likes the mobile, like the mobile option, yeah.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Um, because you saw at TCU that they usually have a quarterback that they they can also run a running play with, you know, a QB running play.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: So I think Cumby's gonna really like that, and I'd really like to see that because TCU's put together some solid offensive schemes uh here and there.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: I hope we get the there.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh I I really I feel I I'm with you.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: I've had more faith in Cumby at this point, and I do think if if Wells gives him the offensive playbook, I think we're gonna we could absolutely make some noise this season.
- 28:46SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, I think so too.
- 28:47SPEAKER_04: And and spring ball is always like a positive jump.
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: It's we're far enough removed from last season to kind of think, hey, you know, maybe this will be different, and I think it will be different.
- 28:56SPEAKER_04: I think we have a lot of we have a lot of good returners.
- 28:59SPEAKER_04: We haven't even talked about Ezukama coming back, Seradric coming back, most of the O-line, a lot of the D line, pretty much every linebacker.
- 29:07SPEAKER_04: You know, we got guys like Rico Jeffers coming back, Schooler, all those dudes.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: So we have a lot of experience, which is something we haven't been able to say the last few seasons, right?
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: And and Matt Wells is in his third year, so maybe he's he's more accumulated into the job, maybe he's more in tune with Texas Tech and the West Texas community.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: So maybe he'll be able to uh put together a better season this year through experience alone.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: Um, and I kind of wanted to add that it I really hope Matt Wells does good this season because what we're gonna come out of this with what's what's likely an extension for Chris Beard and probably a raise.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: So goodness, we're gonna we're gonna need to save our money.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: So I really hope Matt Wells pulls it together because I just I don't know if we can afford to go out there and get a good name.
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: It would probably have to be a big bet name, if you know what I mean.
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: It'd probably have to be like, for the love of God, we're gonna have to take this risk, and I hope it works because he's what all we can afford, you know.
- 30:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: But but but also to that point, boosters will come back when football starts producing, and fans will start like hopefully we'll be at 100 capacity with fan with you know fan attendance and everything like that.
- 30:21SPEAKER_04: So we'll have those ticket sales.
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: Hopefully, we'll have the booster and revenue support if we're putting up wins, you know, to show if we're putting up wins, we won't have to worry about it.
- 30:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 30:31SPEAKER_04: So uh Matt, yeah, and and that's definitely you know something to worry about because if if Matt Wells has another season like he did, he's he's probably he's gonna be gone.
- 30:39SPEAKER_04: So for sure.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: If we don't go bowling, he's gone.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, or maybe even a bowl win.
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: It's just there's a lot of pressure on him, rightfully so.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so you don't you don't come in and do those first two seasons like you did.
- 30:49SPEAKER_03: I understand you got handed a Cliff bad recruited team, but it's just year three, you really got to show if you're gonna make it or not.
- 30:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 30:58SPEAKER_04: So I'm excited.
- 30:59SPEAKER_04: I I'm mostly the thing that gets me excited the most is Sonny Cumby coming in and having a new offensive scheme.
- 31:05SPEAKER_03: I think that was a great hire from Wells.
- 31:07SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 31:07SPEAKER_04: I think defense did fine last season.
- 31:09SPEAKER_04: I think Keith Patterson's uh the right guy for the defensive coordinator position.
- 31:13SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm still not you know there with Matt Wells yet.
- 31:16SPEAKER_04: Hopefully, you know, some of his decisions will be a little better than last season, but you know, we'll have to see when actual game time happens.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: Is this uh everybody's looking at his wiener dog?
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: That's why he keeps looking yeeting his head over, getting away from the mic.
- 31:31SPEAKER_04: No, sorry, yeah, sorry about that.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: Um, but okay, is this a weird comparison?
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: Is is Matt Wells showing kind of um uh Bill Snyder vibes with his like how so with his like his commitment to the community college transfers?
- 31:48SPEAKER_04: I mean, I don't know if it's I don't know if it's really Bill Snyder inherited a terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, yes, terrible Kansas State like worst P5 team.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: I get that.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: No, I I and I'm not saying he's ever gonna be Bill Snyder, but no, I'm saying, like, is he not kind of taking that blueprint?
- 32:05SPEAKER_04: He's taking the same blueprint that Chris Beard's doing with getting transfers, and he's getting transfers from big name schools.
- 32:11SPEAKER_04: I mean, Matt Wells is getting guys from Michigan State, from Alabama, LSU, those type of guys.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: I should have said I should have said just transfer portal in general, not just community colleges.
- 32:20SPEAKER_04: Well, and and one of our our best coaches of all time is doing that same thing in Chris Beard.
- 32:24SPEAKER_04: So the college transfer portal has never been more relevant than it is right now.
- 32:29SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was ridiculous after uh most of the teams finished their season in basketball.
- 32:34SPEAKER_04: I think there's like 900 kids already in the transfer portal, which is another argument that we'll probably leave for another day, whether the transfer portal is a good idea or not for a college athlete.
- 32:45SPEAKER_04: Um, but uh there's just so many new guys going in and experience going into this portal now that when you're when you're uh uh getting a team, when you're inheriting a team that was not there recruiting wise, like Matt Wells did with Texas Tech, you have to dip into that transfer portal just to get you know guys on the field that aren't freshmen.
- 33:08SPEAKER_04: You know, you can only yeah, you can only do so much when your guys are 18 and 19 years old.
- 33:12SPEAKER_04: But for him to get guys like Colin Schooler and Brandon Boyer Randall and you know you know Zach McPherson last season from we got him from Penn State, and uh we have some solid guys this year.
- 33:22SPEAKER_04: It looks like Marquise Waters is gonna be a big time player for us in that in that defensive back unit.
- 33:28SPEAKER_04: So I you know it's it's it's a good move, I think, on his part, and it is what it it's hard.
- 33:34SPEAKER_04: I know the recruiting to Lubbock is always a stupid conversation, but it is hard when you're not winning, you know.
- 33:40SPEAKER_04: It's it's not like you know, guys are growing up saying, I want to go play in Lubbock, Texas.
- 33:44SPEAKER_04: It just not it's just not happening.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: So no, no, you know, it's different from West Texas, yeah, exactly.
- 33:49SPEAKER_04: So and he's been getting a lot of those West Texas guys.
- 33:52SPEAKER_04: So um I want Matt Wells to succeed.
- 33:55SPEAKER_04: I think he's got a really good chance this season to succeed.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: I've seen a lot of good stuff from training camp.
- 34:00SPEAKER_04: So uh I just thought that was a good topic of conversation to talk about during all this.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: And and was didn't Matt Wells kind of pick up steam at this point in his his tenure at Utah State as well.
- 34:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he had a couple, he was kind of up and down his whole tenure at Utah State.
- 34:14SPEAKER_04: Obviously, his highs being towards the end of his career, but he he inherited a really bad team there.
- 34:20SPEAKER_04: I think his first two seasons were like two and three win seasons, something like that.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: So who knows?
- 34:26SPEAKER_04: Who knows?
- 34:26SPEAKER_04: With with Sonny Cumby and him, you know, maybe they could build something here.
- 34:30SPEAKER_03: But absolutely, I really think the I think that's the biggest difference maker is the Sonny Cumby hire.
- 34:35SPEAKER_04: I'm in positive vibes right now.
- 34:37SPEAKER_04: So me too, dude.
- 34:38SPEAKER_03: I want good stuff to happen.
- 34:39SPEAKER_03: The whole time, the whole fan I think this is something the fan base can get excited for.
- 34:43SPEAKER_03: The whole time, it wasn't so much fire Matt Wells, because come on, that's that was a little extreme year two, you know.
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: And so anyway, but the whole time was like, let's fire Yost already, get him out of here.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: Like, people are like in the middle of the season, like, can we finally get rid of Yost?
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: Like, this is not working, or at least Matt Wells, please take the the calls, you know, um, because he's an offensive-minded guy.
- 35:06SPEAKER_03: Um, so the whole I I think we can find a lot of hope in knowing that Yost is gone, even though Yost was like one of the big hopes coming in, yeah.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: But not everything works out like you expect it to.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: But I think we can take a lot of hope in knowing that he's a he's a tested offensive coordinator.
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: TCU has had some awesome success under Cumbi.
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: So I will take their records tomorrow.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: So it's I mean today, but you know, it's yeah, yeah.
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh dude, it's speaking of how's that?
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: I feel like that's gotta be like the biggest game of the year for us now, at least this season.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: Uh but the T the TCU?
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I feel like that's gotta be like that's gotta be like circled on the calendar for Cumby.
- 35:44SPEAKER_03: I'm sure he's just like, what weird stuff am I gonna pull out of the drawer for that game, you know?
- 35:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I it Sonny Cumby doesn't like come off as like a a guy who's gonna like dislike TCU, you know, they gave him an opportunity and they didn't they didn't technically they didn't fucking like that, right?
- 36:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:02SPEAKER_04: Not like a revenge game or anything, but he's probably gonna pull out some weird stuff for that one.
- 36:07SPEAKER_03: But you you absolutely will try harder, you know.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: It's just that you know, kind of show your former employer that you know, now that I'm at my dream job, get ready to see what I can do.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: Now, in that whenever the coach lets me do what I want to do, because there was a lot of talk that Gary Patterson was holding him back, too.
- 36:21SPEAKER_03: Apparently, there's a lot of talk about that as well.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: So I hope Matt Wells is not doing the same.
- 36:25SPEAKER_03: I don't see it, I don't seem like similar coaches at all.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: So I don't I don't see that happening.
- 36:30SPEAKER_03: Um, so I really hope he takes it to who's obviously the most obnoxious coach in the whole Big 12.
- 36:35SPEAKER_04: Matt Wells has said he has given him the reins.
- 36:38SPEAKER_03: That's what I'm saying.
- 36:39SPEAKER_04: He's like, he's like, Sonny cumby, you do you, man.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: Like, I'm gonna be here and I'm gonna be supporting you and everything like that.
- 36:46SPEAKER_04: But this is your offense.
- 36:47SPEAKER_04: This is we're gonna live and die by you.
- 36:49SPEAKER_03: Matt Wells is a good salesman, he knows how to sell sell what he's what he's he's selling, you know what I mean?
- 36:55SPEAKER_03: Because he he he's getting these awesome recruits to Lubbock and he says the right things because obviously he knew the fan base was mega pissed about the offense, so he he ditches Yos and then says what probably what the whole fan base wanted to hear when we got some.
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: He's like, please just give him the book, please.
- 37:12SPEAKER_04: And that was and that was a tough decision for Matt Wells to fire.
- 37:15SPEAKER_04: It really was.
- 37:16SPEAKER_04: You know, uh, you talk about he's he was probably one of his good friends by that point.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: They've been coaching together for years, you know.
- 37:21SPEAKER_04: That's a tough thing to to fire one of your probably friends, you know, yeah, probably close friends.
- 37:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so uh, you know, props to him for making a tough decision that he needed to make.
- 37:31SPEAKER_04: You know, sometimes it's just what you need to do, and I think I I have a lot of faith in Sonny Cumby.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: Me too.
- 37:36SPEAKER_03: I I think I think we can uh get excited over the summer here for uh football season.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: We always do, we always do for sure.
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: Okay, one one thing.
- 37:44SPEAKER_04: Who do you think starting day one?
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: Just go.
- 37:46SPEAKER_04: Who do you think starting?
- 37:47SPEAKER_04: Oh, Tyler Shuck.
- 37:48SPEAKER_04: Okay, cool.
- 37:49SPEAKER_04: Tyler Shuck, I I agree with you.
- 37:51SPEAKER_04: I agree with you.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: I think it's gonna be Tyler Shuck.
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: I think he's been in Springball.
- 37:55SPEAKER_04: I think he's only been on campus for like a week and a half, two weeks now.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: So that's why we haven't heard all this news.
- 38:00SPEAKER_04: But I I think by the time spring ball ends and by the time we get ramping up to getting football going again, I I think it's gonna be him.
- 38:08SPEAKER_03: I don't think it's gonna be a freshman.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: So I I think I think we're gonna roll with a guy that's seen the football field before.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: And going with a guy that's seen a P5 football field before, even better.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: For real.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: For real.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: I mean, playing at Oregon, that's big time.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, Columbia has, but you you know what I mean.
- 38:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but he was a Utah State, he wasn't like an Oregon.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:25SPEAKER_04: So uh, but yeah, I think that'll that'll do it for football.
- 38:28SPEAKER_04: I think we should touch on baseball.
- 38:30SPEAKER_04: Uh last week we put some stuff, uh, you know, we talked about the Oklahoma State win that in the in the lost episode that will never be released.
- 38:38SPEAKER_04: Shout out.
- 38:40SPEAKER_04: Uh I know I'm awful.
- 38:42SPEAKER_04: That was all on me.
- 38:43SPEAKER_04: Uh I didn't I didn't find time to record and I was just lazy.
- 38:47SPEAKER_04: So my bad guys.
- 38:48SPEAKER_04: But baseball, uh recently, most recent sweep.
- 38:53SPEAKER_04: I should well, most recent couple wins, South Florida.
- 38:56SPEAKER_04: We swept them 3-0.
- 38:57SPEAKER_04: We killed him in every in every game.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: None of them were really even close.
- 39:02SPEAKER_04: Um, Drew Baker, back to back, big 12 player of the week, by the way.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: We are we went 11-1 in our homestand, our 12 straight game homestand.
- 39:11SPEAKER_04: So um our one loss coming to Oklahoma State, but we won that series anyway.
- 39:16SPEAKER_04: So beat them big time.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: I think we've won like eight out of the last 11 against Oklahoma State in baseball.
- 39:23SPEAKER_04: Uh, we're kicking butt, man.
- 39:24SPEAKER_04: We're kicking butt.
- 39:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, that's I hope we keep it rolling because we're about to get into some juicy Big 12 play here.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: Um, we have the evil ones we were just talking about earlier.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: UT here in a couple in a few weeks uh at the end of the month here, and I'm looking forward to it.
- 39:40SPEAKER_03: So I think our baseball team's on the right projection right now.
- 39:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, man.
- 39:43SPEAKER_04: And even I mean, UT's having a good year so far in baseball.
- 39:46SPEAKER_04: We also have TCU coming up here soon.
- 39:49SPEAKER_03: Another tough to apart.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: We have always good.
- 39:52SPEAKER_04: We're going to Manhattan to play K-State in a three-game series on April 1st through the third, and then we go TCU comes to Lubbock and we play them in a three-game series.
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: Stephen F.
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: Austin, West Virginia, OU, Baylor, New Mexico, and then Texas.
- 40:08SPEAKER_04: But Texas right now is yeah, Texas right now is number five in the nation.
- 40:13SPEAKER_04: I think we moved up to number four.
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: I think we did, yes.
- 40:16SPEAKER_04: We're rolling, man.
- 40:17SPEAKER_04: We are seriously, we're finding our stride.
- 40:20SPEAKER_03: We really are.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: We're gonna head to the middle of America here soon.
- 40:23SPEAKER_03: So I'm really looking forward to seeing how these guys go in and kick all of our rivals' butts.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: We got a whole full of a slate full of Texas teams, so always like seeing that.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, we got like what you named, like four Texas teams.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: So I'm looking forward to seeing us beat up on some in-state uh rivals here.
- 40:39SPEAKER_04: For sure, man.
- 40:40SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 40:41SPEAKER_04: So keep an eye out for baseball.
- 40:42SPEAKER_04: They're always a top program here at Texas Tech, and uh, we're always rooting for them.
- 40:47SPEAKER_04: So let's end off this episode then with Song of the Week.
- 40:51SPEAKER_04: Go ahead, Tristan.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: All right, I'm just gonna do my song of the week.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: Got that got lost in last week's episode.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: My bad.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: Uh uh, that is going to be Wilder Days by Morgan Wade.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: So that's just it's a really fun song.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's a different take on some on country music.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: It's very alternative style country music, it's not your traditional style, and it's a really cool take.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: Um, it's it's a it's really well written.
- 41:19SPEAKER_03: It's about a uh a girl who's into an older guy.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: Um, and she just really wishes she got to see him whenever he'll be young man and just wild as you know we are in our early 20s.
- 41:28SPEAKER_03: So it's a really fun song, really well produced.
- 41:30SPEAKER_03: And I can't, I every time it comes on, I have to like blare it.
- 41:34SPEAKER_03: So cool.
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: And sing like a sing at the top of my lungs.
- 41:37SPEAKER_03: So hope y'all like it.
- 41:50SPEAKER_04: Right on, man.
- 41:51SPEAKER_04: Well, I'm changing mine because I don't remember what I did last week, but also I wanted I wanted to make it more relevant for this week.
- 41:59SPEAKER_04: My song of the week is by a guy named Post Malone.
- 42:04SPEAKER_04: This one is titled Stay.
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: So Chris Beard, stay, please.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: This but by the way, this song is it's really good.
- 42:12SPEAKER_04: He's getting kind of deep in his in in this song uh off his album, I believe.
- 42:17SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, it's off Beer Bongs and Bentley's, uh, which was a fantastic album.
- 42:21SPEAKER_04: Post Malone has a lot of fun jams, but this one's kind of slow.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: It's kind of, you know, talking about a relationship that's that's kind of failing.
- 42:28SPEAKER_04: He wants he wants uh her to stay, but I want Chris Beard to stay.
- 42:32SPEAKER_04: That's what I want.
- 42:33SPEAKER_04: That's what I want to happen.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: Sell me how last night I'm here.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: But don't come only to stay a little longer.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: So I can't believe we haven't done a posty song yet.
- 42:50SPEAKER_04: I know.
- 42:51SPEAKER_04: I I thought about it a few times.
- 42:52SPEAKER_04: I thought if I was gonna do any of them, it would be Candy Paint because that one's just my favorite.
- 42:56SPEAKER_04: It's so that's your favorite.
- 42:58SPEAKER_04: I love that song, man.
- 43:00SPEAKER_04: It's a guilty pleasure.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: I know it's popular as heck, but I can never skip Sunflower.
- 43:04SPEAKER_03: Sunflower is so good, it's so good and happy, dude.
- 43:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, but um uh uh shout out to the native Texan that is Post Malone and uh him participating in Matthew McConaughey's uh benefit, singing some country tunes.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: That was really cool of him.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: Uh we live in the greatest state in the country and the greatest country in the world.
- 43:21SPEAKER_03: So that was that was awesome to see.
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: He was actually really good in those.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: I didn't I didn't like his rendition of the Hootie and the Blowfish song.
- 43:28SPEAKER_04: Uh I only want to be with you.
- 43:30SPEAKER_04: I didn't I didn't like that one, but I did like the two that he did on the McConaughey thing.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna miss her by Brad Basley, one of my favorite Brad songs.
- 43:38SPEAKER_04: If if y'all haven't if y'all haven't heard that, go go listen to that.
- 43:41SPEAKER_04: I think it's on YouTube.
- 43:42SPEAKER_04: And he did a Sturgile Simpson song.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: He did he did a Surgil Simpson song.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: Uh can't recall what it was, but it's one of his more popular ones.
- 43:48SPEAKER_03: No, but you can wear your crown.
- 43:50SPEAKER_03: That's what it was.
- 43:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:51SPEAKER_04: He was really good in that.
- 43:52SPEAKER_04: So go give Post Malone.
- 43:54SPEAKER_04: Uh, again, my song of the week is Stay by Post Malone.
- 43:56SPEAKER_04: Go give that a listen.
- 43:58SPEAKER_04: Um, and and yeah, so I think that's gonna do it here for episode I think 33, since we skipped last week.
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: Sorry again, that's on me.
