- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Tom Moore of the ukon men's basketball coaches.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I got one comment nationally top, how are these schools
- 0:07Speaker 2: football schools primarily letting coaches go and paying off these
- 0:11Speaker 2: bills of fifty and sixty million dollars to these coaches
- 0:15Speaker 2: that they've just fired.
- 0:16Speaker 1: It seems impossible.
- 0:19Speaker 3: I think what you're seeing at some of these places,
- 0:21Speaker 3: Mike is like the donor, the incredibly wealthy donor influence
- 0:26Speaker 3: on decisions, right, Like, the coaches have to be careful
- 0:30Speaker 3: what they ask for at that level because if they're
- 0:33Speaker 3: begging their donors to get a football salary cap of
- 0:37Speaker 3: thirty five forty forty five million dollars, and that's coming
- 0:40Speaker 3: mostly from really wealthy donors, as soon as they lose
- 0:43Speaker 3: two or three games in a row, that same wealthy
- 0:46Speaker 3: donor is going to say, like, I don't want this
- 0:48Speaker 3: guy anymore.
- 0:49Speaker 1: So some schools have incredible money.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I don't know how they can afford to pay off
- 0:54Speaker 3: a buyout like we saw with Brian Kelly or James Franklin.
- 0:58Speaker 3: But these schools have it. These don't owners have it.
- 1:00Speaker 3: But it's a scary time for obviously you're seeing it
- 1:04Speaker 3: at the highest level football schools, where again you're asking
- 1:08Speaker 3: these people to help fund your team. At the first
- 1:11Speaker 3: sign of underachieving, they're going to have a say with
- 1:13Speaker 3: the athletic director and they're going to watch you out.
- 1:16Speaker 3: So it's a scary time.
- 1:19Speaker 2: The governor of Louisiana just said publicly the athletic director
- 1:24Speaker 2: at LSU is not picking the next coach.
- 1:26Speaker 1: When I heard that, I had to shut off whatever
- 1:29Speaker 1: I was watching. I couldn't watch. That made me sick.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Only in Louisiana, Right, it's a different set of rules
- 1:35Speaker 3: down there, I guess.
- 1:36Speaker 1: So let's talk about schedules, right, This year a big one.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Husky's taken on six top twenties in the opening two months.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Dan talked a little bit about that it's important you
- 1:46Speaker 2: want high seating, but it's also important, isn't it as
- 1:49Speaker 2: a national kind of an image Like Yukon certainly has
- 1:53Speaker 2: that championship image with six trophies on the men's side,
- 1:56Speaker 2: twelve on the women, But it seems as if the
- 1:59Speaker 2: men got to go out there and take on anybody.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah, my coach has always wanted to challenge himself with
- 2:04Speaker 3: the best and play the best brands too as well.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Well.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Now there's another layer to it where we're trying to
- 2:10Speaker 3: maximize financially, maximize our dollars that we can make in
- 2:14Speaker 3: these games too as well. So things broke really well
- 2:16Speaker 3: for us this year where we'll get two opportunities to
- 2:19Speaker 3: play at MSG, and we'll get an opportunity to play
- 2:22Speaker 3: in Boston. Those are all three of those are really
- 2:24Speaker 3: lucrative opportunities for us. And then the two home games
- 2:27Speaker 3: against Texas and Arizona are obviously lucrative too as well
- 2:31Speaker 3: because they're on our home campus and then we go
- 2:36Speaker 3: away only one time to Kansas and they'll come back
- 2:38Speaker 3: to us next year.
- 2:39Speaker 1: So it's coaches really. He pushes a lot.
- 2:46Speaker 3: I'm doing a lot of the non conference scheduling and
- 2:48Speaker 3: it takes up a lot of mind, time and energy.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Jason Bettikolfer helps out with that too as well, but
- 2:53Speaker 3: he's pushing me all the time to get the best brands,
- 2:56Speaker 3: the elite brands, and also trying to make sure it
- 2:59Speaker 3: lines up financially for us to do well that way
- 3:02Speaker 3: too as well. So this year it worked out great
- 3:04Speaker 3: on both ends. We're heavily at work with next year's
- 3:08Speaker 3: schedule to try to replicate that and I think, like
- 3:10Speaker 3: he said in an earlier clip, with us getting one
- 3:13Speaker 3: more game next year allowed by the NCAA, I think
- 3:16Speaker 3: we'll try to go for seven high made games. So
- 3:19Speaker 3: it helps you with the net, it helps you with
- 3:22Speaker 3: select and therefore it helps you with on selection Sunday too.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Well, looking forward to it. Tom.
- 3:27Speaker 2: We appreciate you obviously, keep up the good work. I
- 3:30Speaker 2: know Husky Nation is very much in tune to what
- 3:34Speaker 2: all of you guys do up there with basketball for
- 3:37Speaker 2: uk We appreciate it.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Thanks so much, my pleasure, Mike, good talking with you.
- 3:41Speaker 2: All right. That's Tom Moore and that wraps up the
- 3:43Speaker 2: Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show for this week. The opener
- 3:47Speaker 2: new Haven on Monday, and that'll be a gamble pavilion
- 3:51Speaker 2: at seven o'clock. I'm Mike Chrispino, and we'll talk to
- 3:54Speaker 2: you again on Monday
