Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Badi here, you are listening to five
- 0:20Speaker 1: Minute Friday. Can I tell you the most unfortunate thing
- 0:23Speaker 1: I am? This is not unfortunate. I am in Palm
- 0:28Speaker 1: Springs right now. I came out to Indian Wells for
- 0:32Speaker 1: the tennis tournament and some work which I'll talk about
- 0:36Speaker 1: in today's episode. But on my last day in this hotel,
- 0:41Speaker 1: I realized that the television has free HBO. I do
- 0:47Speaker 1: not have HBO at home, but I, because I don't
- 0:50Speaker 1: have HBO, have not yet watched Heated Rivalry. And I
- 0:54Speaker 1: realized it today that I had the opportunity to watch it.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And now I'm two episodes in and I'm just shy
- 1:02Speaker 1: of crashing for my night and checking out of this hotel,
- 1:05Speaker 1: and I am so bummed. I'm going to need to
- 1:08Speaker 1: find somewhere to watch the remaining episodes of this series.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I needed to be in the know. I needed to
- 1:15Speaker 1: understand what all the hype was about. I know that
- 1:18Speaker 1: I know that you understand. Anyway, Yes, I am in
- 1:21Speaker 1: Indian Wells as I record this, and I'm here because
- 1:27Speaker 1: I had the opportunity to do some hosting at the
- 1:31Speaker 1: A six House of Tennis out here. So what that
- 1:34Speaker 1: looked like was a product panel with two women that
- 1:38Speaker 1: work at the brand talking about one of their new
- 1:42Speaker 1: tennis sneakers, the Solution Speed, and then I got to
- 1:47Speaker 1: sit down with Taylor Fritz. Many of you probably know.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I believe he's currently ranked number seven in the world.
- 1:54Speaker 1: He's an Olympic bronze medalist, twenty twenty four, US Open
- 1:58Speaker 1: finalist twenty twenty two, a champion here at Indian Wells.
- 2:04Speaker 1: So cool to do that. And although as we know,
- 2:09Speaker 1: Taylor Fritz not a woman in sport, this is something
- 2:13Speaker 1: that's very exciting for me because a big goal of
- 2:16Speaker 1: mine this year is to do more hosting around events
- 2:21Speaker 1: that have nothing to do with run. If you're not
- 2:25Speaker 1: new here, you know that I'm obviously a passionate runner.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I've been doing loads of hosting over gosh, I mean,
- 2:34Speaker 1: at least the last eight years since I started this show,
- 2:37Speaker 1: at events that have to do with run, and so
- 2:40Speaker 1: now I'm really looking to put myself out there and
- 2:44Speaker 1: have opportunities that involve other sports. And so that is
- 2:50Speaker 1: something I'm really excited about. It's something I'm really excited about,
- 2:53Speaker 1: and it's something that I know won't come easy. I
- 2:56Speaker 1: know that having this base of hosting is super critical
- 3:01Speaker 1: to doing this work. I know that I do this
- 3:03Speaker 1: work well, and that's something that I want to say
- 3:05Speaker 1: with my whole chest. I have been in situations where
- 3:08Speaker 1: I've been up for opportunities and for a plethora of reasons,
- 3:12Speaker 1: they just haven't panned out. But I can say for
- 3:14Speaker 1: certain that I know that I'm good at what I do,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and I know that I am willing to work for it.
- 3:22Speaker 1: A lot of what's going on in my life right
- 3:24Speaker 1: now feels like a big question market feels like I
- 3:28Speaker 1: just need to trust the process. I'm sure i'll talk
- 3:31Speaker 1: about this over the next month or so as I'm
- 3:34Speaker 1: going through this process, but I'm starting the egg freezing
- 3:37Speaker 1: journey next week, which comes with so many different emotions.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I actually shared something about this on social media earlier
- 3:47Speaker 1: in the day today and received so many beautiful messages
- 3:51Speaker 1: of support and women sharing their stories and offering advice,
- 3:55Speaker 1: and I just felt so grateful to have that community. Yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 1: and so that's something that feels in flocks. I'm about
- 4:03Speaker 1: to resign my lease, which is always like this thing
- 4:06Speaker 1: where you think about where am I going to be
- 4:08Speaker 1: in twelve fifteen eighteen months from now, And you know,
- 4:11Speaker 1: every time I resign my lease, I think to myself, like,
- 4:14Speaker 1: am I going to be in a completely different chapter
- 4:16Speaker 1: of my life? Am I gonna ever get to this
- 4:19Speaker 1: point where I don't want to live in New York?
- 4:21Speaker 1: I know that my parents, well at least my dad
- 4:23Speaker 1: doesn't want me to live in New York anymore because
- 4:26Speaker 1: it is expensive. Things are in flux, and so I
- 4:31Speaker 1: feel as though in every aspect of my life, I
- 4:35Speaker 1: am just surrendering to the universe and trusting that I
- 4:39Speaker 1: can do the best I can with what I have.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And over the next few weeks, which will then bleed
- 4:46Speaker 1: into the next couple of months, I promise that I
- 4:51Speaker 1: will have grace with myself, and that grace is something
- 4:55Speaker 1: that carries over all of these different avenues which I'm
- 4:59Speaker 1: talking about. Yes, I want to be hosting at more
- 5:03Speaker 1: events outside of RUN, and I want to really be
- 5:05Speaker 1: immersing myself in so many different aspects of women in sport.
- 5:09Speaker 1: What an amazing time it is to be working in
- 5:13Speaker 1: this area right now. However, these opportunities aren't going to
- 5:18Speaker 1: come overnight, and so all I can do is put
- 5:21Speaker 1: myself out there and do the best I can with
- 5:23Speaker 1: what I have and keep showing up and doing a
- 5:26Speaker 1: good job. Those are the things that are within my control.
- 5:31Speaker 1: That is what I'm focused on. It's hard to let
- 5:34Speaker 1: go right, It's hard to move forward when you don't
- 5:37Speaker 1: know what happens next. It's frustrating to feel as though
- 5:41Speaker 1: you want all of the answers right now. I want
- 5:45Speaker 1: a magic eight ball to shake it and tell me, like,
- 5:48Speaker 1: where will I be in X amount of time? How
- 5:52Speaker 1: is this going to feel? But I don't have that,
- 5:56Speaker 1: And so I take a deep breath and mind myself
- 6:00Speaker 1: that I have great people in my support network, and
- 6:04Speaker 1: I choose to do the best I can with what
- 6:07Speaker 1: I have. And so my prompt for you this week
- 6:12Speaker 1: is where can you loosen your grip just a little bit?
- 6:15Speaker 1: Where can you trust the process a little bit more?
- 6:21Speaker 1: And now a listener question. Hey Emily, my name's Brittany.
- 6:26Speaker 1: I'm writing today because I'm interested in signing up for
- 6:29Speaker 1: my first half marathon. I'm wondering if there's anything that
- 6:33Speaker 1: I should take into consideration before signing up for this.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I'm a pretty avid runner right now, but is there
- 6:39Speaker 1: a certain amount of base that I should have before
- 6:42Speaker 1: pulling the trigger really appreciate your insight and love following
- 6:46Speaker 1: you on social media. Thank you. All right, Brittany, signing
- 6:51Speaker 1: up for that first half marathon, you already have an
- 6:54Speaker 1: understanding that it's important to have some sort of a
- 6:57Speaker 1: base going into this endeavor. So I would say that
- 7:01Speaker 1: depending on how far out the half marathon your eyeing is,
- 7:07Speaker 1: that is something really foundational. So you don't want to
- 7:11Speaker 1: sign up for a half marathon that's in a month
- 7:14Speaker 1: from now if you don't have some solid miles as
- 7:18Speaker 1: a part of your regular routine. Now, that specific amount
- 7:21Speaker 1: of mileage will differ from person to person, but you
- 7:25Speaker 1: want a plan that isn't increasing mileage week over week
- 7:30Speaker 1: more than ten percent at a time. So right now,
- 7:33Speaker 1: if you're only running four miles a week and you
- 7:36Speaker 1: want to sign up for a half marathon in four weeks,
- 7:39Speaker 1: that's not the smartest idea. However, if you're running four
- 7:43Speaker 1: miles a week and you want to get that cumulative
- 7:46Speaker 1: mileage somewhere, maybe closer to twenty miles a week, then
- 7:51Speaker 1: it's going to take a handful of weeks. I'm bad
- 7:55Speaker 1: at math right now, but no more than ten percent
- 7:58Speaker 1: increase in mileage a week. Over week to get to
- 8:00Speaker 1: a place where you have a considerable amount of miles
- 8:04Speaker 1: under your belt. You want to do that because you
- 8:07Speaker 1: want to stay of off injury. You want to make
- 8:08Speaker 1: sure that you're taking care of yourself, and that additional
- 8:12Speaker 1: mileage more time on feet, is going to make you
- 8:15Speaker 1: feel more confident. The next piece of advice that I
- 8:18Speaker 1: can offer is that you don't want to choose a
- 8:22Speaker 1: half marathon that is going to put unnecessary stress on
- 8:28Speaker 1: the whole shipping. So, yes, the idea of a destination
- 8:31Speaker 1: race can be fun. However, I would recommend for something
- 8:35Speaker 1: that's your first half marathon to choose something that's a
- 8:39Speaker 1: little closer to home. Choose something where you can remove
- 8:43Speaker 1: aspects of decision fatigue, make the whole experience easier on yourself.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Something else to keep in mind. I feel very strongly
- 8:52Speaker 1: about this As someone who loves setting a goal. I
- 8:55Speaker 1: firmly believe that your only goal for your first race
- 8:59Speaker 1: of any kind and should simply be to finish. So
- 9:03Speaker 1: while there may be buzzy times out in the world
- 9:05Speaker 1: of how fast you quote unquote should be doing these things,
- 9:10Speaker 1: throw the rule book out the window. You are doing
- 9:13Speaker 1: this thing to be able to walk out on the
- 9:15Speaker 1: other side and say I am a half marathon or
- 9:20Speaker 1: and that is such a major accomplishment. I could ramble
- 9:25Speaker 1: on about different advice when it comes to racing for
- 9:28Speaker 1: quite some time, but the last thing I'll say here
- 9:32Speaker 1: is it's better with a buddy. If you are signing
- 9:35Speaker 1: up for your first race, there are going to be
- 9:38Speaker 1: moments that feel scary and unfamiliar, and that is entirely
- 9:43Speaker 1: understandable that it might make you feel some kind of way.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So have an accountability buddy, someone to talk to you
- 9:49Speaker 1: throughout your training, someone hopefully to toe that starting line with.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Get a friend, do it together, and what a beautiful
- 9:58Speaker 1: experience it will be for the two of you to share.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Of course, always here for your listener questions. You can
- 10:06Speaker 1: email me over at Hello at Hurdle dot us and
- 10:10Speaker 1: I'll answer your question in an upcoming episode of the show.
