Transcript
- 0:08Good afternoon. Welcome Miller and Condon here
- 0:11on a Tuesday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:15back with Iowa based programming now for the next 6 hours.
- 0:18Thank you for starting the afternoon here with myself and
- 0:20Trent Condon as we will talk sports with you up until 2:00.
- 0:24Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:26Alec Bussey will join us today. We'll talk Iowa State topics.
- 0:30The Cyclone Caravan, they began their May, the month of May with
- 0:35their trips through the states, had a couple of stops yesterday.
- 0:39We'll recap that with Bossy, but a lot of other topics.
- 0:41I was state related coming up here at the bottom of the hour
- 0:44with cycloneinsider.com, cyclonealert.com, Alex, Alec
- 0:52Bussey, our number two. We're going to take a look at
- 0:55the NBA and the NHL as their conference finals begin tonight.
- 1:00Our friend Mr. Gatlin from Locked On NBA, he'll join us at
- 1:05102. Jackson Gatlin.
- 1:08And then Joe O'Donnell, the voice of the Minnesota Wild will
- 1:11help Trenton I out with the Final Four in the NHL.
- 1:15He gets underway here tonight with game one there, Game one in
- 1:18the NBA Conference Finals tonight.
- 1:20So Western Conference numbers coming down a little bit.
- 1:23Was 7 1/2 yesterday when I cashed in my chips, went to bed
- 1:28and 7:00 here this morning when we get up.
- 1:31So anyways, good to see you. Trent Compton, how are you?
- 1:34I'm doing well. A weird night last night after
- 1:37we've just been inundated. There's always something
- 1:40important. Playoff, beginning the season of
- 1:42baseball, lots of things happening and then you get to
- 1:46last night and on top of it, I, I had it on.
- 1:48It was ready to go right at 6:00.
- 1:50I was getting dinner ready, wife was running some errands.
- 1:52Boom, dinner is going to be on the table.
- 1:54Get there right at 6:30. Watch opening pitch and the
- 1:57rains were there. They were.
- 1:59And it was on and off and. So suspended right in the what
- 2:03they got midway through four, I think, and they'll start that
- 2:06one tonight at 5. It was a story all over the
- 2:08place. Saint Louis last night, they had
- 2:10a lengthy rain, rain delay. Watch the Cubs and the Marlins.
- 2:13I thought Kyle Tucker was a good fielder.
- 2:15I mean, apparently I was mistaken because he's God awful.
- 2:18At least he was yesterday. I mean, my God cost him the game
- 2:21and he's not hitting. I mean, do your job in right
- 2:23field. And then the bullpen again.
- 2:25Yes, Palencia was good for the first two.
- 2:28Kind of got himself a little trouble back-to-back to back
- 2:31hits when was a double and a blue.
- 2:34The save as they try and find their closer brown was good.
- 2:40It wasn't great by any means. He struck out eight, which gets
- 2:43your attention. Didn't walk anybody, but gave up
- 2:46six earned runs, which wasn't ideal.
- 2:50But the Cubs continue their offense continues to hit the
- 2:52baseball. With the Porter Hodge news and
- 2:56what's going on with this team in obliques, did they did that
- 2:59work on their obliques? I don't know.
- 3:01Is it something that we need to look at the training stuff,
- 3:03what's going on with these God forsaken oblique injuries?
- 3:06But that aside, with what's happening in Porter Hodge, which
- 3:10I not to speak for you, but we both believe the most upside in
- 3:13that bullpen is Porter Hodge, that guy, maybe Palencia.
- 3:17I'd I'd like that's fair. Absolutely.
- 3:19Both of them talented young guys.
- 3:22Yep. But now with that, Presley
- 3:24doesn't have it anymore. He just doesn't.
- 3:26He was good. Yesterday, but he hadn't been
- 3:28that been hit and missed all year.
- 3:29I agree with you. When you look at the overall
- 3:31numbers, you can't, no, in today's baseball, you can't have
- 3:34that lack of velocity and strikeouts and expect for it to
- 3:38contain you. And what a guy that's probably
- 3:40going to make what, 70 appearances that you'd want in
- 3:42the year 6570? That's what you're looking for
- 3:44for Presley, That he's not that guy?
- 3:46No. Not anymore.
- 3:49I'll tell you if you haven't watched much Caleb Theobar until
- 3:51this year, Cubs fans. Get used to it.
- 3:53He's not good. No, but you're going to see a
- 3:55lot of them. And he was, he was good
- 3:56yesterday when he came in and replaced the bra.
- 3:59But you're not at the back of the not at the back of the the
- 4:02bullpen. No, I agree with you.
- 4:03To get an out against a lefty with two outs.
- 4:06Yeah, yeah. And the 6th inning and a six,
- 4:09three-game. OK, but overall, this is not a
- 4:12top half reliever. No, he's a Lukey Pomerance.
- 4:16You go through this bullpen, the reason I'm going down this path
- 4:21is there's teams that are already out of contention.
- 4:23There are teams that are already looking to move on and you're
- 4:26not going to get their best arm right now.
- 4:28But is it the time to start getting look at the Rockies 3rd,
- 4:324th arms? Look, look down the look at the
- 4:35Orioles and what they have and guys that are going to be
- 4:37expendable. Start to take a look around the
- 4:38league and see not those guys that we're going to be talking
- 4:41about in July, not the guys that are going to cost right, a top
- 4:4415 that everybody wants, right, But just finding arms because
- 4:48this bullpen they're not doing. It no, and this is a team
- 4:52offensively that looks as though they've got a chance by Esteros
- 4:56is coming back down to AAA today.
- 4:57Hit the ball hard, just didn't have a lot of success up there.
- 5:01I'll tell you what was the maybe the positive from last night was
- 5:03Matt Shaw getting back to the to the show and having the game
- 5:09that he did, in particular his final two at bats.
- 5:11Going the other way, which we saw down here, I mean, it felt
- 5:14like almost every single highlight that you saw.
- 5:16Was yeah. Was him going to right center
- 5:19field or? Text for our tweet, rather from
- 5:20Birchy, was going the opposite way.
- 5:22And that's what he did on that swing and just an absolute, it's
- 5:26one game, but he looked so much more comfortable dialed in.
- 5:30And this is what we talked about going back to the beginning.
- 5:33There are many ways that you can handle it.
- 5:35You can handle it like Ian Hap put in the work.
- 5:38And I remember that. And the only reason I remember
- 5:40that Ian Hap the one that Boggs. Because we were out there, we're
- 5:42out there. And he wouldn't talk to anybody.
- 5:44He wouldn't talk to Birch. He wouldn't talk to anybody.
- 5:47He was there. He was put in the work.
- 5:48He was, he was mad. But instead of whining about it,
- 5:52complaining, oh, I got a short stick, whatever it was.
- 5:54No, he just put in the work and that's what we see from.
- 5:57That shot and now he's got a long term deal.
- 5:58Absolutely. He is a very solid Gold Glover,
- 6:03very good Major League Baseball, no question.
- 6:05That's what he turned himself into.
- 6:06Instead of sulking, he put in the work.
- 6:08It looks like Matt Shaw, because I saw those Birchy tweets when
- 6:11he was out there hours before anybody else was there.
- 6:15Getting extra work at third, getting extra hits, doing the
- 6:18things that you need to. And I'm hopeful because when I
- 6:20see a guy do that, those are the guys you want to see succeed.
- 6:23Absolutely. We'll see where it goes.
- 6:25But I agree, I mean, if you can find somebody on that rocker on
- 6:28that Rockies pitching staff that you can get get this point of
- 6:31the year. Good news is they probably
- 6:33haven't had a lot of wear and tear in that arm if they're at
- 6:35the back of that bullpen. What's going on with the
- 6:38Dodgers? I mean, is it is it time to
- 6:40panic? They've lost foreign role.
- 6:42I get teams have foreigner lose foreign role all the time in in
- 6:45the course of 162, but not the Dodgers.
- 6:48Not the Dodgers. It's been a long time since
- 6:50they've lost that money. What's going on there?
- 6:52Because they seemed like beginning of the year, as much
- 6:58of A free square as you could possibly be before the first
- 7:01pitch of the season has even been thrown, right, Didn't they?
- 7:05We knew they were going to be excellent.
- 7:07We knew that that this was going to be a team that was going to
- 7:09be absolutely incredible. But it's peaceful.
- 7:13I, I just can't, I know I can't get too concerned about it.
- 7:17Overall, they had bad stretches. They had a month stretch last
- 7:20year where they went 11 and 13 for the month.
- 7:23But they didn't lose four in a row at any time in that month.
- 7:26They did. They did lose 4IN.
- 7:27July 7th through the 11th, they lost one game to the Phillies,
- 7:31excuse me, one to the Brewers, and then were swept by the
- 7:33Phillies and lost four in a row. A little bit later on that
- 7:36month, they lost four out of five.
- 7:38They went 2:00 and 9:00 on the road in the month of July.
- 7:41It's baseball. I can't go there.
- 7:43I I know it's not good for sports radio.
- 7:46I can't. Yeah, they just seem like
- 7:47they're so damn dumb and don't look.
- 7:49I'm glad. I yeah.
- 7:50I, I, I hope they fall apart. I hope they don't make the
- 7:52playoffs. No, I I really do.
- 7:54I really. Do I didn't like the way they
- 7:55spend their money. They deferred their money.
- 7:57They didn't spend their money yet they deferred their money,
- 8:00which seemingly is going against the rules.
- 8:02Speaking of rules, the NFL is meeting today, you may get your
- 8:05wish, tush push, tush push and you may get your wish.
- 8:08When it comes to the fact that the tush push is not only going
- 8:11to be banned, but pulling and pushing runners is now part of
- 8:18that rule. It was an addendum to that rule
- 8:21at the seemingly 11th hour. So along with the tush push
- 8:24being outlawed, offensive lineman will no longer be able
- 8:29to get behind the running back. Whoever's carrying the football,
- 8:31we got the football and pushed them for an extra 567-1012
- 8:35yards. Good.
- 8:36Can't pull. We already know that that's
- 8:38against the rules. But now pushing, I kind of liked
- 8:43that, but I'm kind of glad that that's part of the rule.
- 8:46Take it out. If you're going to take the tush
- 8:47push out, take the whole push out.
- 8:49So we have odds that go along with this.
- 8:51This is from offshore. My buddy Jimmy Shapiro who sends
- 8:54me these all the time from offshore.
- 8:56This is from BET online. Will the Tush push get banned?
- 9:00Yes -400 significant favorite and the no plus 250 will the
- 9:08playoff receding proposal now. This is the one that interests
- 9:11me 'cause this one I, I like. I mean, this one's more, I think
- 9:15a more important rule. Personally I I cringe because I
- 9:20think probably no's the favorite.
- 9:23No is not the favorite. Thank God.
- 9:24Yes, is the favorite. Big favorite.
- 9:27Will it get past? Yes.
- 9:29No. Excuse me.
- 9:29No. Is the favorite of -800 pretty
- 9:32significant that this is not going to get past.
- 9:34See, that's what I was afraid of, yeah.
- 9:36So we saw it last year, the impact.
- 9:40Vikings. The number of times that we've
- 9:44seen, and a couple of times it's NFC West teams, the Rams one
- 9:47year, Seattle one year, we've seen them get in with 500 or 7.
- 9:517:00 and 9:00, yeah. So we've seen that happen
- 9:54before. In the grand scheme of things,
- 9:58you play your division opponents twice.
- 10:01Balance schedules are not always there.
- 10:05I still don't have a huge problem with it.
- 10:07And it's weird because I bitch and complain about the College
- 10:09Football Playoff in the NCAA tournament, but in the NFLI,
- 10:13Don't know why. It just seems to work better for
- 10:16me. In my mind, we have something
- 10:18the. Division winners all get a home.
- 10:20Game that you get that home game yet if they moved it, I don't
- 10:24think I'd be crying. I wouldn't be upset about.
- 10:27The one thing that's not on the table for discussion is the is
- 10:30the one buy that's going to remain.
- 10:33And last year would have been in the NFC with Detroit would have
- 10:36got the buy, but the Vikings would have got a home game and
- 10:39the Commanders would have got a home game and the Packers would
- 10:44have got a home game. The three wild cards, two of
- 10:47them would have been would have been division winners, the Rams
- 10:50and the Buccaneers last year. So, all right, so how this would
- 10:53have looked the last year, I'm bringing it up.
- 10:55All right, so you have the Lions as the one, the Eagles as the
- 10:59two Vikings 3 The Vikings would be the three.
- 11:03Commanders. Four and the Commanders 4
- 11:06Packers 5 S Packers go to Commanders.
- 11:09Yeah, and then Tampa and or Rams would have been the 6/7. 6-7 And
- 11:15who did have the better seat between those two?
- 11:17Who won that tiebreaker? I there was the.
- 11:20Vikings were the four, so yeah, so the three of that was the
- 11:24Bucks. So yeah, Bucks would have been
- 11:25the six, and then the seven would have been the Rams.
- 11:28We got Rams Eagles right away. It would have been different.
- 11:32Maybe maybe coulda if a woulda shoulda been different.
- 11:36All right, so you said that sports on TV was different last
- 11:39night it was. I found myself and I don't know
- 11:42why I haven't come back to this series since the pandemic.
- 11:46I watched the 1st 2 episodes of The Last Dance last night.
- 11:49Oh, you did. Just again, I forgot some.
- 11:53So many little Nuggets that made this series so spectacular.
- 11:57It truly is phenomenal. Phenomenal.
- 12:00Just the fact I'm guessing it was Jordan that had the
- 12:04wherewithal to grant the access to the camera crews to follow
- 12:09them everywhere in what would have been the final year.
- 12:14It's really, really good. I I did the Royals and the
- 12:17giants was early in the game. They went to break.
- 12:19I like logged on ESPN just to make sure I could find it.
- 12:22ESPN, what's it.com, what's it called?
- 12:25Plus and I found it. They clicked on it.
- 12:29I didn't click back. I went back to the to the Royals
- 12:33and the giants. It was in the bottom of the
- 12:34eighth inning and the Royals were trying to shut them down
- 12:37and they did eventually. But it's such a good series
- 12:40trend. It really and truly I wanted to
- 12:43see Brett Favre's Netflix untold, the fall of Favre, I
- 12:48think is what it's called and it comes out this week and I think
- 12:52that is going to be amazing. I want to I want to see it.
- 12:56I mean, I, I hope that it's accurate.
- 12:59I hope that they don't leave anything out because this this
- 13:02for a long time might have been my favorite football player.
- 13:05I love watching Brett Favre play the game.
- 13:08His toughness, his accuracy, his I don't give a damn.
- 13:11I'm going to throw it there. The window, there is no window
- 13:14there, but I'm going to throw it there anyway.
- 13:17But the whole Strand thing rubbed me the wrong way.
- 13:21You know, giving up the record at the end, That's not, I don't
- 13:25know, and I'm not a Packer fan. I just loved watching him play.
- 13:29I had a different viewpoint. Well, I get it.
- 13:31You're a Bears. Fan.
- 13:32I'm a Bears fan, but the toughness part of it.
- 13:36And then when we find out, well, there was also a reason for that
- 13:38toughness. Yeah, big reason, you're right.
- 13:41He was hopping up on goofball. His eyes are kite.
- 13:44And OK, that changes and he. Was the only one who's ever
- 13:47done. No, no, no, not at all.
- 13:49But the respect that I I respected the guy.
- 13:53That one tough SOB man. And then the pictures.
- 13:58Yeah. The gin serger, yeah, yeah.
- 14:00And then that and then defrauding.
- 14:02Yeah, no, some. State, yeah, that was awful.
- 14:05He seems like pretty despicable human.
- 14:07Being at this point, yeah. And I hope that we get all of
- 14:11that in the in the piece. I don't know if it's a multi.
- 14:14I. Think it is.
- 14:15It seems like it would be a lot to cram into a couple of hours
- 14:19if they're going to do it right. Speaking of doing it right, the
- 14:21WNBA and the television partners did it right over the weekend.
- 14:25The Indiana Fever drew two. I'm just going to leave it at
- 14:29that. The Indiana Fever drew 2.5
- 14:32million because it didn't matter who they were playing.
- 14:35Let's not kid ourselves, it doesn't matter who they are
- 14:37playing. This has nothing to do with the
- 14:39air quote rivalry. This could have been the worst
- 14:42team in the league. Whoever that is.
- 14:43Could have been Seattle and Indiana.
- 14:44Sounds pretty good, but to my point, they weren't tuning in to
- 14:48see the sky. They weren't, and 2.5 million
- 14:53people tuned in to watch that event on Saturday afternoon in
- 14:58May, which is a remarkable number.
- 15:00It truly is set a record. Not surprising, the pregame show
- 15:05set a record as far as people tuning in to watch the 800,000
- 15:09people were watching the pregame show of game one of the WNBA
- 15:13season at least on Saturday. They would have begged for
- 15:16800,000 people to tune in for Game 5 championship of their
- 15:20championship series. They couldn't get that for
- 15:23years. They couldn't get that mark.
- 15:26They had you and you look at those numbers, you know, highest
- 15:29ratings ever. And and that's what this was.
- 15:31But you go back, remember also those initial games, you
- 15:34remember that push in the 90s when the WNBA was forming and
- 15:38NBC, every single commercial we got.
- 15:41Next there's Rebecca Lobo and here's a cast and crew.
- 15:45That is what it was. And it was also on broadcast
- 15:48television and and the push that you had when it was a different
- 15:53world compared to where we are today.
- 15:55And to break those records in a completely different environment
- 15:58in game one. Eye opening, but not a surprise.
- 16:02She is one of one. She is one of one, no doubt
- 16:05about it. Since we're on TV, it's going to
- 16:08try and find a point to bring this up at some point this week.
- 16:11Around the Horn ends. This week it does.
- 16:13What AI? Don't know why it's seemingly
- 16:17still doing well in the ratings, but who's your favorite panel?
- 16:22Oh boy, you got to have Woody Page on any around, don't you?
- 16:25Well, he's on the mount. Mount Rushmore.
- 16:26He is for sure, yes. I mean the chalkboard, yes
- 16:30right. That that's as big a part as
- 16:32this. Who do you remember the guy?
- 16:33Do you remember who started as the host of that show?
- 16:36The. Host before reality, before Stat
- 16:39Boy took. Over and and didn't reality cut
- 16:41his teeth working with with Kornheiser and Wilbon?
- 16:46PTI He was step boy, he was the guy, that boy.
- 16:48He came in the last minute and told him what they got.
- 16:50What they got wrong and then he went over there in to take over
- 16:544. So my in my mind, it was he just
- 16:58jumped off. But now that you're saying that
- 17:00Max Kellerman? It was.
- 17:01Yeah, Max. You sell my hands.
- 17:02There was no there. Was no, no, you didn't cheat.
- 17:04That, but it's I had to kind of talk through it a little bit
- 17:07there. You saw me.
- 17:08You buy and stretch it out and it happens.
- 17:11Sure. Get a little older, yeah.
- 17:13But yes, absolutely. And Jay Mariotti.
- 17:16You know what? I thought he was great.
- 17:17That was the. Perfect spot for.
- 17:19Him I agree with you 100%. Terrible.
- 17:21Person. Yeah, great on that show, but.
- 17:24Excellent in that. Yeah, he was great.
- 17:27He was the mean guy. Yeah, he was the.
- 17:30He had a role on that. Show and he was hustling at it.
- 17:33Couldn't agree with you more. Loved him on the show.
- 17:35Shouldn't left and there was a There's a lot of chapters to
- 17:38that story. Yeah, things that happened.
- 17:40But who else? You got two more spots.
- 17:41Two more spots now, a guy that I just really like, and he's
- 17:44probably been there more the last 6-7, eight years, is
- 17:47Clinton Yates. Who?
- 17:49No, I see. I don't watch the show anymore.
- 17:51And Clinton Yates is a guy that I used to talk to on the radio a
- 17:54lot way back in the day. So because.
- 17:56So do you have the number still I?
- 17:57Think I do, actually. Now that you say that, I'm sure
- 18:00I do somewhere. And he's still on the show.
- 18:02So he used to be a writer for USA TODAY.
- 18:04He was like their NFL writer for years, Clinton Yates.
- 18:07And because of that, and I'm like, man, I talked to that guy
- 18:09probably 50 times other than that.
- 18:11Ring the bell. And yeah, he's on there.
- 18:13So that pops up there. Who else do you got?
- 18:15I got to put Bob Ryan on there of.
- 18:17Course, absolutely yes. Collishaw was on there a ton.
- 18:22He was good. Jay and Donde was on there a
- 18:25ton. Charlie Symers before he died
- 18:28from the LA, from the Times, Los Angeles Times was good.
- 18:34Jackie McMullen was really good during well, she was good all
- 18:38time Olympics and basketball. But I think I think that for me
- 18:43it would be Woody Mariotti, Ryan.
- 18:50And then maybe keep one chair empty because you don't want to
- 18:53forget somebody. Right, you know, I'm trying to
- 18:57look through and try to figure out 'cause it's a deep list too.
- 19:01And there's, there's a number of people that you go through and
- 19:03you're like, Oh yeah, they were on there and you completely
- 19:06forgot about it. I'm trying to find a good list
- 19:09though of seeing ones that maybe well.
- 19:12And, and here's the other thing that, you know, what that show
- 19:14did for a lot. I mean, and I think in this
- 19:17case, it was probably more prevalent that it launched women
- 19:22into the sports. Menikheim's.
- 19:25Yeah. Menikheim.
- 19:26'S excellent. Diana Rossini seemingly got more
- 19:31run on that. Courtney Cronin.
- 19:32Courtney Cronin today, yes. And she's really good.
- 19:36Yeah, she is. She's Bears, right?
- 19:37She Bears ESPN or she now graduated.
- 19:40When they had remember for maybe it was a year or two, they had
- 19:43those specific. Every team had their own writer.
- 19:46Well, it was the division writers and she was the NFC
- 19:49North 1 and I tried to get her on I don't know how many times,
- 19:52but never, never could find the right contact for her.
- 19:54But yeah, when you go through Plasky, I really.
- 19:58Like, yeah, you know what? He's good too.
- 20:00Yeah, he's yeah. You know what?
- 20:01That's a good one. I'm glad you reminded me of.
- 20:03Him. That's one that.
- 20:04Plasky. Plasky is good.
- 20:06Freak Isola I always he's. Kind of a New Yorker kind of got
- 20:11that little. But not too much.
- 20:13No, but he's OK. He's not like, who is Lupica?
- 20:16He's Lupica was too much for me. He was too much New York.
- 20:20Isola has it. And and Lupica to me.
- 20:23Sports reporter. Oh.
- 20:24Absolutely. Yeah.
- 20:25And he just always felt like he was talking down, even as a 8
- 20:29year old kid getting ready for church.
- 20:31Why is this? Why is this little squirrely guy
- 20:33talking down to me? You just always had that feeling
- 20:36with him. But Tony real.
- 20:38Yeah. And it's getting funny how your
- 20:39mind kind of plays tricks. I thought he just went right
- 20:42from stat boy into that role. But he had.
- 20:44To wait his turn. At the beginning, Kevin.
- 20:46Kevin Blackstone. Oh, there's a good one.
- 20:48Absolutely Bomani. Jones, the round Glasses, Bomani
- 20:51Jones, boy, they had some talent on that.
- 20:53Show Michael Smith was there for a while, he was.
- 20:55That's another good one. You know the I there was a time
- 20:59back when Bob Ryan was on this radio station a lot.
- 21:04I knew how much he got a show and I I don't want to throw that
- 21:08because I'm not 100% sure that this is accurate, but I think
- 21:12it's like $1000 for half an hour.
- 21:17Now you do 100 shows a year, That's your side gig.
- 21:21That's. That was absolutely a side gig.
- 21:24And for all these people, it was a side.
- 21:26Gig it is. Yeah, absolutely.
- 21:28What's I think with the exception of reality, they all
- 21:30had jobs. They're still writing to this
- 21:32day, a lot of. Them I wonder what reality is
- 21:33going to do next. I I saw he was on Dan Patrick.
- 21:37He's been doing some media, probably keeping himself
- 21:39relevant well. 2002, that's when the show started.
- 21:43It's a hell of a run. But he talked about maybe some
- 21:45something similar to what this is, you know, with a different
- 21:48company. I think that would make a whole
- 21:49lot of sense. If you put something like this
- 21:52up on the podcast side, I'm sure it would do very well.
- 21:56But is that something that would even work on a streamer?
- 21:58I I think it would work. It would lose my generation.
- 22:04And that's OK, yeah, and maybe even mine.
- 22:06Maybe yours, Yep, but mine's dying.
- 22:11Maybe it would. Maybe something like that.
- 22:13I mean, look how many podcasts there are in the World Trade.
- 22:16Well, and the video component on YouTube, I mean, I tell you what
- 22:20we do. You have to have both.
- 22:22In today's environment. Yes, you do, don't you?
- 22:24Yeah. I mean, you look at like a huge
- 22:26podcast company now like The Ringer, Bill Simmons company,
- 22:29all their videos now I listen to him, I listen to Ryan Rosillo,
- 22:33both those guys. It's also and he says right at
- 22:34the beginning of the showdown video and what we do with me,
- 22:38I'm locked on every one of our shows.
- 22:40That is a huge component to it. And though financially it hasn't
- 22:45quite got there, that gap is closing.
- 22:47You look at the people, you know, we talked so many years
- 22:50about cord cutters. Now we have a most a full
- 22:54generation of cord nevers, people that have never had
- 22:57satellite, never had cable, and these people are now pushing
- 23:00into their 30s. Right, that generation never had
- 23:02that little thing that used to arrive every morning at their
- 23:04front door. Never had those kind of things.
- 23:07Never. Read the newspaper in the
- 23:08crapper. Can you believe that?
- 23:10No, there's that to millions of people that never experienced
- 23:13that joy. Never, ever would have imagined.
- 23:16Peace and quiet. The newspaper family's not going
- 23:19to barge in. Just you and your paper, your
- 23:22sports section. Oh, those were the.
- 23:24Now you just got your phone. You just got anyways, let's take
- 23:29a time out. We will come back and be joined

- 24:15Bussey, Miller and Condon Underway on Tuesday.
- 24:17It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 24:23I'm Miller Condon. Welcome back.
- 24:24Iowa Sports Radio Network with you until 2O clock, hour number
- 24:28two, we'll preview the NBA final for the conference finals are

- 24:35Joe Donnell will help us out with the conference final in the
- 24:38NHL. He is the radio voice of the
- 24:40Minnesota Wild. Alec Bussey covers Iowa State at
- 24:44cyclonealert.com, part of 24/7 and he's with us.
- 24:48Hello, Alec Bussey, first of all, thanks for being flexible
- 24:50yesterday. Appreciate it.
- 24:52How are you? Good guys, thanks for having me
- 24:54on. Always fun to join you even if
- 24:56it's on a Tuesday instead of a Monday.
- 24:57Well, you know what? It's next week.
- 24:59Next week we're going to be on a Tuesday too, because we're off
- 25:01on Monday. Well, let's just make it a
- 25:04pattern. No, I like you on Mondays.
- 25:06Don't. Don't.
- 25:07Break his routine, He's going to get a.
- 25:09Creature of habit Alec Bussey good to talk to you.
- 25:12So lots of ground. What I want to start with you
- 25:14is, is Jet Tamala, who I was, you know, reading up on him as I
- 25:18was, I can understand why there's a lot of interest in
- 25:22certainly in Iowa State retaining that his interest in
- 25:25becoming a Cyclone. But here comes Alabama and
- 25:29apparently they're going to lock in an official visit or already
- 25:32have. If you're a Cyclone fan and
- 25:35somebody that wanted to see Tamala wearing a Cyclone
- 25:38uniform. Should you be nervous at this
- 25:40point, Alec? Yeah.
- 25:42I mean, I think any time that you have a committed prospect to
- 25:45head reportedly shut down his recruitment, which is what Tom
- 25:48Moy of our national 24/7 recruiting staff reported during
- 25:52the Elite 11 regionals down in Nashville.
- 25:55Anytime you have a prospect like that reopen or re engage
- 25:58different programs and his recruitment, I do think that's
- 26:01something that is of significance.
- 26:03I mean, I think it's certainly of significance when you think
- 26:05about it being Alabama and not just any other power conference
- 26:09school that doesn't have the ability to compete for national
- 26:12championships every year or doesn't have a pedigree of doing
- 26:15that every year. So I do think there is reason
- 26:17for concern. I don't think it's necessarily a
- 26:20situation where he's going to take an official visit to
- 26:23Alabama and he's going to immediately flip.
- 26:25Like I do think that Iowa State has done a good job of
- 26:28establishing themselves in tomorrow's recruitment, which is
- 26:30obvious. And the fact that they earned
- 26:32his commitment on April 18th, they'll have to maintain that,
- 26:36obviously, especially if he takes an official visit to
- 26:38Alabama here in the first or middle part of June.
- 26:42And I do think it's a situation where, you know, it's easy to
- 26:45get caught up in the bright lights and the trophy cases and
- 26:48the accolades and everything that Alabama football has to
- 26:51offer. But, you know, I would say it's
- 26:53done a really good job of establishing relationships and
- 26:55this recruitment. They prioritize Jet Tomala
- 26:57before any other power conference school did.
- 26:59And their exclusive pursuit of Jet Samala really helped land
- 27:03him over some other schools because once I would say zeroed
- 27:06in on Tomala, they stopped recruiting all their other
- 27:08quarterbacks. Speaking of the state of
- 27:10Nebraska, they had their big recruiting week in Iowa State
- 27:13does coming up that weekend of June 6th through the 8th, but
- 27:16one guy's coming in a week earlier.
- 27:18Isaac Jensen, a tight end from Millard South over in Omaha,
- 27:21class of 2026, got some big time offers for a three star kid.
- 27:25Florida State, Duke, Colorado, Auburn, long long list there.
- 27:30Isaac Jensen coming in a week earlier than everybody else that
- 27:33are making their visit. Anything to read into that?
- 27:37I don't know if there's anything to read into it.
- 27:38As far as the specific dates of him coming to Ames, I kind of
- 27:42think it has more to do with the fact of Jensen's official visit
- 27:45schedule. He's got a lot of different
- 27:47schools that are interested in him and you kind of mentioned a
- 27:49few of them there. I wouldn't completely out
- 27:53outrule Notre Dame in that pursuit.
- 27:55I think Notre Dame is continuing to gain strong position for Evan
- 27:58Jacobson, the four-star prospect from Waukee that a lot of people
- 28:01on our airwaves are probably aware of.
- 28:04But Jensen is a prospect that I would say certainly has
- 28:07prioritized. A candidate was on Iowa State's
- 28:09campus for a junior day visit back in late January, early
- 28:12February. He also took took an unofficial
- 28:15spring visit to Iowa State and those are generally a really
- 28:18good indicator of the type of priority, the type of emphasis
- 28:22that Iowa State is putting on some of those prospects who come
- 28:25to campus for those unofficial junior days.
- 28:27So I do think it's an it's a, it's a recruitment that I would
- 28:30say just battling to to get positioned in.
- 28:34I know that he has a crystal ball projection right now to
- 28:37Nebraska, but he doesn't have an official visit right now to play
- 28:39for the Cornhuskers. So I do think that Iowa State
- 28:42doesn't have to worry too much about Nebraska right now in that
- 28:46recruitment. And I also think it should help
- 28:48the Cyclones that Marion Jackson is also committed from Millard
- 28:51South to Iowa State. And then if I would say it's
- 28:53able to keep Jet Tamala, that's another prospect from Millard
- 28:56South that would be coming up North Dames.
- 28:59Good stuff. Alec Bussey joining us.
- 29:01Alec, I want to go to your your column for Monday.
- 29:04Couple of things that stuck with me, including your final
- 29:06paragraph, which I'll get to in a second, but you know, a big
- 29:10talker and and Trent and I have well, we've, you know, had our
- 29:13fun killed it when we could because it was I think it was
- 29:17the basketball program and what we thought was, you know, you've
- 29:20got a really good team play somebody.
- 29:21Would you please? Boy, we can't say that this
- 29:24year. What a daunting non conference
- 29:27schedule TJ Otzelberger's Iowa State men's program about to
- 29:31embark on once we get to November.
- 29:34Wow. Yeah.
- 29:35And I think it's something that I would say SIN should be really
- 29:38excited about. You know, they have scheduled in
- 29:40the past, just looking through some of the data when I used the
- 29:44Ken Palm non conference strikes of schedule rankings in the year
- 29:47they went to the PK event back in 2223, I believe it was that
- 29:52season, they went out to PK, the Nike sponsored event that was a
- 29:56top 200 and non conference strength of schedule.
- 29:58It's hard for a lot of the power conference schools to rank
- 30:01inside the top 100 for that, right?
- 30:03Because you think about how many schools in the low major and the
- 30:06mid majors are scheduling the top of the country so they're
- 30:10able to get their paydays and they're able to fund their
- 30:13athletic, their athletic department with those pay for
- 30:17play kind of checks that schools get.
- 30:19But I would say that I do think they're probably going to be
- 30:21positioned to be in the top 150, top 200 for national non
- 30:25conference strength of schedule this upcoming season.
- 30:27Obviously the Mississippi State game is the one I think you're
- 30:30kind of thinking that up there at the Stanford Pentagon in
- 30:33Sioux Falls, SD. That'll be on November 10th.
- 30:36I think maybe the biggest headliner that I think people
- 30:39have maybe forgotten about a little bit is the game on
- 30:41December 6th at Purdue. And you know, yeah, I mean,
- 30:45that's going to be a top three, top five pre season Purdue team
- 30:49likely to pre season All Americans, potentially the pre
- 30:52season player of the year and Braden Smith joined by pre
- 30:56season All America, Trey Kaufman, Ryan and Mackey Arena.
- 31:00As many of your Iowa listeners probably know, it's one of the
- 31:02most difficult places to play in the Big 10 and therefore one of
- 31:05the most difficult places to play in college basketball.
- 31:08And I think, you know, it should also be pointed out that I would
- 31:11say success over the last couple of years has allowed them to
- 31:13attract decision makers with the players era event down in Las
- 31:17Vegas throughout Feast week, you know, that has the potential to
- 31:21become me marquee preseason MTE type of event.
- 31:26Lots of great programs are going to be down there.
- 31:29Kansas is going to be there. Houston will be there.
- 31:31Iowa State is going to be there. Out of the Big 12, Alabama is
- 31:34going out of the SEC along with Auburn.
- 31:37I think Tennessee is also going. So that is a loaded that where
- 31:40Iowa State could potentially play up to two or three more
- 31:43teams that are ranked in the top 25 at the time of competition.
- 31:46Then you just hope that those teams that you play are able to
- 31:49sustain at the top of the country because that really
- 31:52helps you come into the tournament time and I would say
- 31:54put themselves in position to do this because of the success the
- 31:57Teacher Alice Burgers teams have had over the last 2-3 years.
- 32:00Tailgate tour underway. Ankeny was the first stop
- 32:03yesterday out for you in the media.
- 32:05What are you chasing when you're going to these events?
- 32:07I know Pollard was around, so you got an opportunity there
- 32:09here and with the coaches, but is it kind of the sidebars?
- 32:12Is that what you're working towards and trying to get a
- 32:14little bit more info for the people over at Cyclone Alert?
- 32:18Yeah, I think, I think a lot of times right now common form of
- 32:22questioning, especially with Jamie Pollard is, you know, psy
- 32:25town, just governance of college sports.
- 32:27Right now, with the potential approval of the house settlement
- 32:30here this week, it seems like that could happen.
- 32:33There's some good reporting from Pete Samuel and Ross Dellinger
- 32:35yesterday on new wrinkles with the house settlement that I
- 32:38would encourage people to go read.
- 32:40And then also I would just say with Matt Campbell and TJ
- 32:42Alsenberger, we haven't had a chance to talk to them really
- 32:45specifically TJ Alsenberger since the conclusion of the
- 32:47season in Milwaukee. So getting an opportunity to
- 32:50speak with him about his transfer editions, where the
- 32:53team is at, when they will get back to campus to begin
- 32:56offseason workouts on June, June 16th.
- 32:59We'll go back to campus, I think around June 14th, June 15th.
- 33:02And Matt Campbell obviously getting a final wrap up on the
- 33:05conclusion of spring football practices as well.
- 33:07So I think there was a lot to talk about and I'm sure if
- 33:09you're and I state fan and you were in Ankeny yesterday, you
- 33:12were able to enjoy that event at Toast.
- 33:15And then it'll be an event that continues throughout the rest of
- 33:17the state if you get anything, Council Plus or Omaha here at
- 33:21the end of the week or next week.
- 33:22Yeah. Do you know that is TJ going to
- 33:24make media availabilities part of the month of June like he did
- 33:28last year? I mean it was so great for
- 33:31content wise. Yeah, I don't know if he's going
- 33:34to. I really hope he is just because
- 33:37it really helps us during this time of the year.
- 33:40And I know that fans really enjoy reading about those new
- 33:43transfer editions, how they're playing the incoming freshmen,
- 33:46especially with this class where you're having top 50 recruit and
- 33:49Jemarion Bateman, you're bringing in Wisconsin's Mr.
- 33:52Basketball. And Xavian Mitchell.
- 33:54You've got some international flavor with Dominiquez Pleta, a
- 33:5821 year old by the time the season tips off from Germany.
- 34:01And then Killian Torre, another top 150 yard, who's from France,
- 34:06who played his senior year of high school ball at Brewster
- 34:08Academy in New Jersey, New Hampshire.
- 34:11He'll, he'll be all, he'll also be on campus.
- 34:13So it's an exciting young freshman class that's coming in
- 34:16with some international flavor, some top 50 flavor and then
- 34:18obviously in Mr. Basketball. And then you've got some
- 34:20exciting transfer news as well. I want to go back to your to the
- 34:24piece of your Monday column, which I really enjoy.
- 34:26It's great every week, absolutely, Even if you're not a
- 34:29Cyclone fan, no. It's great with information.
- 34:31Absolutely. I loved your final because you
- 34:33and I are kind of from the same cloth in this respect.
- 34:36We're not from here, right, And you know, we're not from the
- 34:39state of Iowa and there's just something that I find about
- 34:41that. It just captures you, at least
- 34:43it did me. You know, there's obviously no
- 34:46ocean. There's none of those kind of
- 34:48things that go with it, but there's just something about
- 34:50this place and I thought you're you're paragraph or two that you
- 34:53put together on some of the things that you're finding about
- 34:57living here in the in the capital city that maybe you
- 35:00didn't expect when you first got here.
- 35:02Something about this place isn't there.
- 35:05Yeah, well, first of all, thanks for reading and obviously
- 35:07enjoying the weekly thoughts column.
- 35:08It's one of my favorite things to write, especially in the
- 35:10Aussies, and I wish I had the time to keep it going during the
- 35:12season. It's it takes a while to write.
- 35:14I mean, that column gets close to 1500 to 2000 words a week,
- 35:18depending on how deep my thoughts go.
- 35:20But yeah, I mean, last week I had an opportunity to go to my
- 35:23second Iowa Cubs game. And I just find those would be
- 35:26like a really fun way to spend a summer night.
- 35:29You know, I went to a Minnesota Wolves game, excuse me, an Iowa
- 35:32Wolves game here this past winter just with a with a buddy
- 35:35who also covers Iowa State. I enjoyed that.
- 35:38I thought it was another nice way to to do that.
- 35:41I haven't had an opportunity to go to a wild game, but I think
- 35:44that's something that would be fun, especially if you're a
- 35:46hockey fan. My fiance and I always enjoyed
- 35:49the farmers market on Saturday mornings a few times over the
- 35:52last two years. You know, it doesn't have, you
- 35:55know, as much to do with Chicago or Minneapolis or Kansas City or
- 35:59Saint Louis, like other major Midwestern cities.
- 36:02But there are things to do here. And I think you can do it
- 36:05affordably in the Des Moines area.
- 36:06And I think someone who's a big sports fan, right?
- 36:08Like, I don't know much about the Iowa Cubs.
- 36:11I'm not a Cubs fan. I don't really care too much
- 36:12about the icons in their prospect rankings.
- 36:15But like, hey, it's fun to go out there and spend a Tuesday
- 36:18night like I did with some family last week and just enjoy
- 36:22what can be a nice weather night like we had, you know, they did
- 36:26dollar hot dogs. That's an awesome night, right?
- 36:28Like, especially if you're just trying to spend some time with
- 36:30friends and and do it in a fun way.
- 36:32So the one certainly has a lot to do.
- 36:34And I try and make that last point every week and weekly.com
- 36:37something personal. Something's going on in my life
- 36:39and I can fit. Hopefully readers are able to
- 36:41kind of get to know me a little bit more as they as they read
- 36:44that each week. And like I said, thanks for
- 36:46starting it out every weekend. I appreciate you guys reading it
- 36:49and obviously enjoying it as well.
- 36:50Yeah, good stuff. We will talk with you next
- 36:52Tuesday. We're all off on Monday.
- 36:54Have a great week, Alec. Bussey, thanks for what you do
- 36:56for us and we'll talk to you in seven days.
- 36:59Thanks, Paul. Thanks guys.
- 37:00Have a great day. You're the same Alec Bussey is
- 37:03we check in on our friend from cyclonealert.com really is a
- 37:06good piece. It is.
- 37:08Every single week. Basketball, football, women's
- 37:10basketball, you know, he hits all the high notes.
- 37:13And then a lot of times he'll talk about what's happening
- 37:15around the Big 12, kind of those big items, NCAA and that story
- 37:21that came out last night from Dellinger.
- 37:24Well, first of all, it's it's it's going to be tied up if
- 37:27lawyers are just going to get their hands.
- 37:29So what is what is this in response to?
- 37:31Is this in response to the state of Tennessee saying hands off,
- 37:34We're going to do what we want, we're going to pay what we want
- 37:38and we don't care what you guys do otherwise, but we're going to
- 37:40do it our way. And they're, and it's like no,
- 37:42no, no, no. NCAA is now coming back to say
- 37:44you can do that you want. To play in the SEC, you got to
- 37:46play by our. Rules.
- 37:48Do you think they really would kick?
- 37:50They call Tennessee. No, I don't either.
- 37:53I don't think it'll get to that point.
- 37:55You think that the Tennessee acquiesce?
- 37:57Well, there are a lot of legs to this.
- 37:59I know. And Andy Staples had a piece.
- 38:02Andy Staples used to be a lawyer, you know.
- 38:04No, I didn't know that. Yeah.
- 38:06And I was trying to read it this morning.
- 38:08It's, it's really tough to read, Yeah.
- 38:11I'm not smart enough. I mean just.
- 38:12I won't even. Click on the thing.
- 38:13If you're not, I'm not. I I just the legalese behind it
- 38:18and some of the terminology and then you reread it again and
- 38:21antitrust this what is this where?
- 38:24Are we months? Are we as far away today as we
- 38:26were because of because you know, it's going to end up back
- 38:29in the courts? Well, it will.
- 38:30I mean, we're not close to the finish line.
- 38:33I don't think this is the beginning of the race.
- 38:35We're maybe we've heard the gun sound and that's about it.
- 38:39But in terms of what college athletics is going to look like,
- 38:42we got a lot to still figure out.
- 38:44We sure do. We'll take a time.
- 38:45I'll come back and finish the hour.
- 38:47Miller in Condon, it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:52Hi, Miller in Condon. Welcome back.
- 38:54Iowa Sports Radio Network. Trent Condon and Ken Miller with
- 38:57you until just before 2. The drive coming up at that
- 39:00time, Heather and Lucas take you until 5:00 overtime, Iowa.
- 39:04Snippet from Sean Roberts this morning.
- 39:06Snippet from us here in mid days.
- 39:08And then, of course, the drive. Well, I watched the Cardinals
- 39:11last night 'cause they were playing Detroit.
- 39:12Detroit's got the best record in the American League.
- 39:15And I'm trying to have this team for real.
- 39:17Should we get invested? Is it too late to try and find
- 39:19the Tigers at a decent price? And the answer is yes, there.
- 39:22But this, I think the story that I came away with is, but what
- 39:29about the team and the other dugout, these Cardinals, Trent,
- 39:31Now it's scooble tonight for Detroit.
- 39:34And obviously you got to pay attention to this one.
- 39:37But if the Cardinals, you know, get to scooble and nobody gets
- 39:40to scooble for the most part, might might be over selling the
- 39:45fact that the National League Central is a foregone
- 39:48conclusion. Fetty back-to-back has not given
- 39:52up an earned run or run and his last two starts including a
- 39:55complete game you. Realize that for a good one,
- 40:00maybe. Pitcher's duel like the Under.
- 40:04Well, I do now that you gave me that info.
- 40:06Hour 2 coming up, we're going to take a look at the NBA and the
- 40:09NHL. Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 40:12Radio Network.
