Transcript
- 0:02This is the time in the NFL season
- 0:04where all the teams are going,
- 0:06who are we?
- 0:07What's our identity?
- 0:08What do we lean on in the tough
- 0:10times?
- 0:12Did the WFP ever figure out their
- 0:14identity?
- 0:15We'll talk about that next.
- 0:28I love the chase and the hunt and

- 0:41It's time to look at the enemy.

- 0:46friend to me.
- 0:47It's not working out,
- 0:48maybe it's the chemistry.

- 2:35All right.
- 2:37First thing is first.
- 2:39One thing I saw yesterday that was really
- 2:42funny is, oh, Jonathan Ortega,
- 2:46why are you buying on Cyber Monday?
- 2:50What am I buying?
- 2:53The thing I just bought was Paper Street
- 2:55Coffee running their hundred and fifty
- 2:58dollar gift cards for fifty bucks.
- 3:01You can't beat that every year.
- 3:04I dive into that.
- 3:04That is the coffee I drink all year
- 3:06round.
- 3:07And he doesn't need I don't even spot.
- 3:09He's not even a sponsor.
- 3:11I just love Paper Street Coffee.
- 3:13I love Gabe.
- 3:15I jump into the Cyber Monday deal every
- 3:17year to get the hundred and fifty dollar
- 3:20gift card for fifty bucks.
- 3:21Can't beat it.
- 3:23So.
- 3:26Corey Leonard,
- 3:26I'm about to get that paper straight
- 3:28coffee fifty four one fifty.
- 3:30It's the best deal out there, man.
- 3:31If you drink that coffee,
- 3:33you've got to got to get that.
- 3:37Amazon has too many mics for sixty six
- 3:39bucks.
- 3:40I did buy a new hard drive.
- 3:43I go through portable hard drives like
- 3:44crazy.
- 3:48And so just...
- 3:52I bought a new hard drive,
- 3:53a new case for those,
- 3:54and it also is a case that holds
- 3:55all my SD cards.
- 3:58So I got that.
- 4:00I have a set of Rode mics.
- 4:05Jonathan, that's what I use.
- 4:06They still work great.
- 4:07So that's awesome.
- 4:13Corey Leonard,
- 4:14his third seat is on the way.
- 4:17The DJI mics.
- 4:18I heard DJI.
- 4:20I hear they're great.
- 4:21I splurged on some Rode ones a couple
- 4:23years ago.
- 4:23They work great for me.
- 4:25And they work with all my equipment.
- 4:27So I'm good with those.
- 4:29But I heard the DJI mics are just
- 4:31much easier to use.
- 4:33So maybe when these ones go bad,
- 4:35I'll go with those.
- 4:37And DJI.
- 4:39David Reed, I'll read this,
- 4:40but I don't want to.
- 4:42Big shout out to them Buckeyes.
- 4:44Also, big shout out to Penn State,
- 4:46who became bowl eligible in a season that
- 4:49we did not think that was going to
- 4:50be possible.
- 4:51And they get to actually play on and
- 4:53play in a bowl game.
- 4:54And I'm just excited about that.
- 4:59um jonathan mine broke so i got new
- 5:02dgi yeah i think that's what i'll go
- 5:04to once mine go down because i've heard
- 5:07such good things about the pairing and all
- 5:09of that so i'll probably switch over to
- 5:11those so anyway with that um fun thing
- 5:20terry says go bucks man i get enough
- 5:23of that living here in columbus i don't
- 5:25need any more of that on my show
- 5:27I'm going to start banning Buckeye talk on
- 5:29here.
- 5:31Uh,
- 5:32first thing I wanted to talk about is,
- 5:39uh, I gotta get to it.
- 5:41Here we go.
- 5:43So I don't know if you guys saw
- 5:44this on the barbell spin and this came
- 5:49out last night, the barbell spin post.
- 5:52Whoops.
- 5:55Sorry.
- 5:57There we go.
- 5:58The barbell spin posted the news that
- 6:00Daniel Brandon had withdrawn from the WFP
- 6:04at seven thirty p.m.
- 6:07One hour later,
- 6:08CrossFit on their workout of the day
- 6:11posted a picture of Daniel Brandon at the
- 6:14games.
- 6:16And spin put out, is this a coincidence?
- 6:20And so I DM spin back and I
- 6:22was like.
- 6:24if this is CrossFit trolling,
- 6:27then we've got the right people back in
- 6:30charge and we're going in the right
- 6:32direction.
- 6:34And I love, God, I hope they're trolling.
- 6:41I hope they're trolling.
- 6:42Because if they're trolling,
- 6:43that means they're getting some confidence
- 6:45back and that they are the league to
- 6:50follow.
- 6:51And they're trolling the other league
- 6:52saying,
- 6:54Yeah, checkmate.
- 6:57I really feel like if CrossFit is truly
- 7:03trolling the WFP, we are winning.
- 7:08And I hope to God,
- 7:11because there's nothing wrong with a
- 7:12little bit of pettiness,
- 7:14just a little bit.
- 7:16You don't want it to get to full-blown
- 7:17cockiness again,
- 7:21but a little bit of pettiness is pretty
- 7:22damn cool.
- 7:24And I hope and I pray to God
- 7:26that they are just being a little bit
- 7:28petty saying, hey,
- 7:30she competed at our finals.
- 7:32Here's a picture of it.
- 7:35Just saying.
- 7:37I would really,
- 7:38really love it if they were trolling and
- 7:40being that petty.
- 7:42anxious to hear your thoughts is it too
- 7:44petty is it something they shouldn't be
- 7:46doing or are you fine with them trolling
- 7:50the wfp if in fact that's what they're
- 7:51doing and i can't imagine they're not it
- 7:54is it would be too wild of a
- 7:57coincidence to not be trolling but i'm
- 8:03truly excited to see what your guys's
- 8:05thoughts are and do you think that this
- 8:08is heading in the right direction
- 8:12because this is the kind of stuff that
- 8:16will bring eyes to the sites, to the,
- 8:20um, to the socials, to all,
- 8:23they need to do the little things to
- 8:25bring eyeballs back to all of their
- 8:28accounts.
- 8:29And I hope that's what they're doing.
- 8:34So throw your thoughts in the chat.
- 8:38Uh,
- 8:41Dylan Loewen.
- 8:42I dig the thumbnail.
- 8:43I do too.
- 8:45It came out really well.
- 8:47It's a picture I took of Ariel at
- 8:48the games this year.
- 8:49I asked chat GPT to make it a
- 8:51comic book sell,
- 8:54and I thought it came out awesome.
- 8:57I'll send you the picture standalone after
- 9:00the show, Dylan.
- 9:04So there is that.
- 9:10What else do we got on tap?
- 9:13One more thing before we get into the
- 9:16WFP and their identity.
- 9:18And that is... I... I said...
- 9:27last night maybe and also in a chat
- 9:29this morning that maribel was retiring and
- 9:33then came out of retirement to accept the
- 9:35bid to wfp i read the translation because
- 9:38she made a post yesterday in spanish i
- 9:41had it translated i don't know if she
- 9:44edited it since then or if the translation
- 9:47was just off but i do want to
- 9:49clear this up because she was not retiring
- 9:53um
- 9:56Here's her post with the translation on
- 9:59Instagram.
- 10:01And it says, we're back on track.
- 10:04I'm going to try to blow this up
- 10:05more.
- 10:06Here we go.
- 10:07We're back on track and this time big
- 10:09at the World Fitness Project final in
- 10:11Copenhagen.
- 10:12And yes,
- 10:12it caught me by surprise just like you
- 10:14a few days ago,
- 10:15but I couldn't resist this invitation so
- 10:17close to home because this one is at
- 10:19least in Europe.
- 10:21It's been a complicated few months with
- 10:23everything that happened to me and I
- 10:25wasn't planning on competing anymore this
- 10:27year.
- 10:28When I initially translated this,
- 10:32it said I wasn't planning on competing
- 10:34anymore and that this year was not there.
- 10:38So that's where I got messed up.
- 10:42And that's where I thought she was
- 10:43retiring.
- 10:44He or she was just done for the
- 10:45season.
- 10:47And people have reached out to me and
- 10:48said that I messed up.
- 10:49So I wanted to face up to that
- 10:51and that bit there.
- 10:52But this was originally posted in Spanish.
- 10:55I had it translated and made a mistake
- 10:58there.
- 11:02So there is that.
- 11:06Now,
- 11:06the next thing I wanted to talk about
- 11:07is, you know, I'm a big football fan.
- 11:12Everybody knows that.
- 11:12I'm a big Chicago Bears fan.
- 11:14And all weekend,
- 11:15the Bears are riding this high of going
- 11:18into Philadelphia and smacking
- 11:20Philadelphia in the mouth.
- 11:21And they did that by...
- 11:23Their offensive line completely dominating
- 11:27the Philadelphia Eagles defensive line and
- 11:29pushing them off the ball,
- 11:31giving their running backs plenty of
- 11:33running space before they ever made
- 11:35contact with anybody.
- 11:38And everybody's saying the bears know
- 11:40their identity.
- 11:40Now their identity is with this big,
- 11:43strong offensive line,
- 11:45moving people off the ball.
- 11:47And because they know who they are and
- 11:50a team like the Eagles are don't,
- 11:52they don't know who they are.
- 11:53They don't know if they're a passing team
- 11:55or a running team or whatever,
- 11:58that the bears are a dangerous team to
- 12:00play because they know who they are.
- 12:02They know their identity.
- 12:05And what made me think about this in
- 12:08the CrossFit space is I think that
- 12:11CrossFit is moving back in a direction
- 12:13where they're moving back towards what
- 12:15their identity has always been.
- 12:18We're talking about forging elite fitness.
- 12:21We have Pukie the Clown back.
- 12:24We may be trolling the WFP online and
- 12:27CrossFit knows who they are and they know
- 12:30they're the biggest show in town and they
- 12:32know what their strengths are.
- 12:35I think what happened with the WFP is
- 12:39Lazar died and they said,
- 12:41we're going to capitalize this.
- 12:43We're going to make a new league and
- 12:44we're going to make it the way that
- 12:45everybody has said they wanted it for
- 12:47years.
- 12:48And to get athletes to come over to
- 12:50their league,
- 12:51they told them whatever they wanted to
- 12:53hear to get them to sign on the
- 12:55dotted line with a contract.
- 12:59The problem is
- 13:01They did this to start a league because
- 13:04of a tragedy that happened at the CrossFit
- 13:06Games.
- 13:08But they avoided saying that.
- 13:10Instead of saying who they are and owning
- 13:13who they are, they skirted around that.
- 13:20And then they came out with these
- 13:21catchphrases and these...
- 13:25analogies that really they didn't believe
- 13:28in or they didn't even um so by
- 13:32the athlete for the athlete for the
- 13:34athlete by the athlete whatever it is
- 13:37nobody believed that at WFP nobody
- 13:40believed that they could let the athletes
- 13:42run the show
- 13:44But they told them what they wanted to
- 13:45hear to get them to sign on the
- 13:46dotted line.
- 13:47Because they felt if they could get a
- 13:49roster full of the top athletes in the
- 13:51world,
- 13:52they could compete with the CrossFit
- 13:54Games.
- 13:55But they never said they were competing
- 13:57with the CrossFit Games.
- 13:58So they never let people know what their
- 14:00identity was.
- 14:03Everything was what you wanted to hear to
- 14:05get you to watch.
- 14:06Everything was to get you to sign on
- 14:08the dotted line.
- 14:09Whatever you wanted to hear.
- 14:12And that's where they made the mistake
- 14:14because they didn't even believe what they
- 14:16were saying.
- 14:19I don't think the people behind WFP are
- 14:21bad people.
- 14:22They just don't know how to run a
- 14:24business or run an organization because
- 14:27you have to have something that you
- 14:29believe in and that you push forward.
- 14:32Go back and watch the interviews of Greg
- 14:34Glassman in like oh nine and eleven and
- 14:37twelve.
- 14:38He knew what CrossFit was.
- 14:40He knew what he wanted to accomplish.
- 14:43There was no doubt in anybody's mind what
- 14:45Greg Glassman was doing and why he did
- 14:47it.
- 14:48And he explained it to a tee every
- 14:50opportunity he got.
- 14:53When you look at the WFP,
- 14:54they've never sat down and told you what
- 14:57their identity is.
- 15:00They thought just by bringing in the big
- 15:02names, they could bring in eyeballs,
- 15:04and it didn't happen.
- 15:08Every time someone hears a rumor or pushes
- 15:11a rumor and hears it,
- 15:14they say it's a smear campaign against
- 15:15them,
- 15:16and then it turns out that the rumor's
- 15:17true.
- 15:19And then they're backstepping.
- 15:21Everything is just... It's just...
- 15:25And I see it in the comments.
- 15:26Vicky's saying it was a word salad from
- 15:28the beginning.
- 15:31I don't know if word salad is the
- 15:32right way to put it.
- 15:34I think they just had empty promises.
- 15:37Because it was saying whatever you wanted
- 15:39to hear to get you to buy in.
- 15:42But then when you went to watch the
- 15:44show or you went to see what they
- 15:47were doing or you saw their posts and
- 15:49you saw that none of the promises were
- 15:52coming true.
- 15:53And then those promises become hollow and
- 15:56more hollow and more hollow.
- 15:58And as the season goes on,
- 16:00now we're at the finals and the promises
- 16:02are so hollow that
- 16:05And the money is so negligible to some
- 16:08of these athletes that it's not even worth
- 16:11their time anymore.
- 16:14It's not even worth their time.
- 16:17They may be pissed at what CrossFit is
- 16:19doing.
- 16:20They may not like some of the things
- 16:21that CrossFit is doing,
- 16:23but the fact of the matter is they
- 16:25have the best season.
- 16:26They have the best competition at the
- 16:28games and they give out the most glory
- 16:30at the end for winning.
- 16:36And that is just known.
- 16:37It is not a promise.
- 16:39It is not something they hope to give
- 16:41you.
- 16:42It is if you win the games,
- 16:44you are going to get the glory for
- 16:46winning the games.
- 16:47You are going to get the eyeballs on
- 16:49you for winning the games.
- 16:51All that is fact.
- 16:54Flat out fact.
- 16:56It's not a promise.
- 16:57It's not an empty promise.
- 16:59It's what you're getting.
- 17:02And maybe this is an unpopular take,
- 17:05and it's in the safest environment that
- 17:07there is.
- 17:08Yes, they had an accident,
- 17:10but go watch other competitions compared
- 17:13to the CrossFit Games.
- 17:15Look how stable everything is around
- 17:17there.
- 17:17The logistics of everything in general are
- 17:21so far above everywhere else.
- 17:24So far above everywhere else.
- 17:26Yes, an accident happened.
- 17:28And yes, they needed to investigate.
- 17:30And they needed to do those things so
- 17:32it never happens again.
- 17:34But it is the safest place where these
- 17:37competitions take place.
- 17:39It is the place where you're going to
- 17:40get the most eyeballs on you.
- 17:42It is the place you're going to get
- 17:43the most exposure.
- 17:44And it's the place that's going to make
- 17:45you a star.
- 17:53They're losing the big names as fast as
- 17:55they sign them.
- 17:56Big names want to be in the big
- 17:58show.
- 17:58That's the games.
- 18:00I think it's more than that, Larry.
- 18:01I think it's when you're fed all these
- 18:04promises and as it moves forward,
- 18:07those promises start to ring hollow.
- 18:09Your faith in that organization and your
- 18:12faith for them to do anything for you
- 18:15is lost because it's all empty.
- 18:19When you go to an event like this
- 18:20and they're promising you all these
- 18:22eyeballs and you see a fourth of the
- 18:26crowd full,
- 18:29there has to be no confidence in that.
- 18:32It looks like a local comp in the
- 18:35stands.
- 18:42Uh, Vicky says, yeah, but Scott,
- 18:43it's all about transparency.
- 18:44She said, sarcastically,
- 18:46that's my biggest issue.
- 18:47Nothing has been transparent until a leak
- 18:49is confirmed.
- 18:50Even then sometimes they aren't bothers
- 18:53me.
- 19:00Um, okay.
- 19:04Is that about the WFP?
- 19:05Are you talking about the CrossFit?
- 19:13Jake,
- 19:13it's why the Olympics is the biggest show
- 19:15on earth.
- 19:16Legacy.
- 19:16Yes.
- 19:18Yes.
- 19:21Jonathan Ortega,
- 19:22I'm still staying on the fact that nobody
- 19:23wants to spend Christmas competing or
- 19:26stuck in Sweden.
- 19:29Vicky clarifies it's WFB.
- 19:31Yeah, I think that's a part of it.
- 19:33But I think that if you believed in
- 19:35what you were doing,
- 19:37you would make that sacrifice.
- 19:40NBA players play on Christmas.
- 19:41NFL players play on Christmas.
- 19:44They do it because they believe in the
- 19:46organization that surrounds them.
- 19:48And nobody believes in what the WFP is
- 19:52doing for them anymore.
- 19:53And so the juice is not worth the
- 19:55squeeze.
- 19:56They are not willing to go on Christmas
- 19:59because they're not getting anything out
- 20:01of it anymore.
- 20:07Um...
- 20:11When the cost is higher than the price,
- 20:14most people get hesitant.
- 20:22I went to the Olympics means more than
- 20:24I won the world championships.
- 20:25Not saying it should, but it does.
- 20:34Yeah, I agree.
- 20:34I agree, Jake.
- 20:36I agree.
- 20:40Great, Scott.
- 20:40That's silly.
- 20:41Those players play for the money.
- 20:43I think that is a cop-out to say
- 20:45that about professional athletes.
- 20:47To put your body through what they go
- 20:49through in a year,
- 20:50it has to be more than about the
- 20:51money.
- 20:54And if you're just playing for the money,
- 20:55you're probably going to suck and your
- 20:57team's probably going to suck.
- 21:03have to play for the love of the
- 21:04game if you're not playing for the love
- 21:05of the game and you're not putting
- 21:07everything you can into it then you're
- 21:09gonna see um subpar results uh jake has
- 21:19an olympic wife bias yeah i would too
- 21:24but growing up as a swimmer like the
- 21:26olympics were everything um
- 21:30You know, when I,
- 21:31when you have those dreams as a kid
- 21:33that maybe someday you can hit the big,
- 21:36you never said,
- 21:37I want to be a world champion.
- 21:39Now,
- 21:41I did have the dream of making it
- 21:42to the nationals and competing at
- 21:45nationals to compete here in the States.
- 21:48But then the next dream isn't world
- 21:50championship.
- 21:50It's definitely Olympics in those sports.
- 21:53And I've talked to Carolyn.
- 21:55Back when there was no pro women's hockey
- 21:58league,
- 21:58the dream was the Olympic hockey team in
- 22:01Canada.
- 22:02And that's the only thing that mattered
- 22:06back then.
- 22:13Larry Young,
- 22:14WFP doesn't realize it has opened the door
- 22:15for CrossFit to reintroduce itself.
- 22:18I think it can be a big open
- 22:23year.
- 22:23I think the open is going to be
- 22:25much bigger than it was last year.
- 22:27I think I've said on here that I
- 22:28think a twenty five percent increase is
- 22:31not out of the realm of possibility.
- 22:34I think it's actually more likely that
- 22:36there will be a twenty five percent
- 22:37increase in open signups this year.
- 22:46Um, and I'm excited to see those signups.
- 22:49I hope that happens.
- 22:54Jake says open.
- 22:55Twenty six will be the biggest yet.
- 22:58I don't know if I can go that
- 22:59far.
- 23:00Um,
- 23:00what was twenty eighteen like four hundred
- 23:04thousand four hundred four fifty somewhere
- 23:08in there.
- 23:11I'd like to see that.
- 23:12That'd be awesome.
- 23:18Corey Leonard, I looked it up yesterday.
- 23:19Last year we had two hundred thirty three
- 23:21K.
- 23:22I think this year we will smash that
- 23:23number.
- 23:29I I think we I think I think
- 23:32we get over three hundred K this year.
- 23:42Jake says in twenty eighteen people signed
- 23:44up because their affiliates told them to.
- 23:50That's possible.
- 23:53Um, uh, grace, I hope that's true.
- 23:57And this is just one person's experience,
- 23:59but all the CrossFit gyms near me are
- 24:01struggling with membership.
- 24:03That's crazy.
- 24:04Cause I, uh, here in Columbus,
- 24:08that is not the case.
- 24:10Um, all the CrossFit gyms are doing very,
- 24:12very well.
- 24:13Um,
- 24:15CrossFit Polaris is killing it.
- 24:18My friend's gym in Powell is killing it.
- 24:22My old gym in Dublin,
- 24:24Ohio is killing it.
- 24:30But I think a lot of the bad
- 24:31gyms have been weeded out during this
- 24:33whole time.
- 24:38So maybe that's where I'm not seeing it
- 24:41is some of the gyms have closed and
- 24:43maybe they should have closed.
- 24:45Maybe it's back to the strong survive,
- 24:47and we have the best with what's left,
- 24:49and their memberships are doing very,
- 24:51very well.
- 24:55Jenny says,
- 25:04yeah i would i would love that i
- 25:07i hope it's over three hundred grand i
- 25:08think i think that's a good goal to
- 25:11have and maybe like larry larry says we'll
- 25:14get to three fifty um
- 25:21think bringing quarterfinals back is a
- 25:23huge step because i know a lot of
- 25:25people that that was their goal their goal
- 25:28was to be top twenty five percent it
- 25:29was a reachable doable goal and um i
- 25:33i think that getting rid of rid of
- 25:35that actually lost us a lot of people
- 25:46um
- 25:51Valenz media.
- 25:52It's hard to convince people to sign up
- 25:53at last year at my affiliate.
- 25:55Yeah.
- 25:55Last year was,
- 25:57I was trying to get people to sign
- 25:58up at Polaris and it wasn't happening.
- 26:01Um,
- 26:01I would talk to people and they just,
- 26:04it just was a blah year.
- 26:05And I, and they,
- 26:07these are people don't even like watch the
- 26:09games and then the players programs,
- 26:12the open anyway.
- 26:13So you're doing the workout.
- 26:13They just, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
- 26:14it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
- 26:15it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
- 26:16it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
- 26:16it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
- 26:17it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's,
- 26:18it's, it's,
- 26:20Okay.
- 26:26Struggling Jim should be the first people
- 26:28convincing their members to sign up.
- 26:30It is the best tool we have for
- 26:31retention.
- 26:33Great point.
- 26:41Freida, you're in Europe, correct, Freida?
- 26:44Sadly,
- 26:46I've heard some affiliates de-affiliating
- 26:48against their members' wishes.
- 26:50I know that that has happened in the
- 26:52states where affiliates have deaffiliated
- 26:56and people then have left those to go
- 27:03to a CrossFit affiliate.
- 27:07Frida is in Sweden.
- 27:09I think Europe has taken the Lazar thing
- 27:13way harder than it's being taken in the
- 27:16states.
- 27:20I have no empirical evidence to prove that
- 27:23other than just kind of the way things
- 27:26have been flowing,
- 27:27but that's kind of where I am.
- 27:45Okay, we already did that one.
- 27:50The open needs to give people that reason
- 27:52to do the open because that makes people
- 27:54want to get in an affiliate.
- 27:57Yeah,
- 27:58but I think the affiliate owners are the
- 28:00big catalyst behind that.
- 28:02The biggest influence are gym owners and
- 28:04coaches.
- 28:04Their passion is reflected by their
- 28:06members.
- 28:16Three new members staying for a year pays
- 28:18for the affiliation fee.
- 28:26My gym has an affiliate inside of but
- 28:29also offers boot camp type classes and
- 28:31yoga.
- 28:32Yoga and boot camp classes have a wait
- 28:34list.
- 28:35Sometimes evening,
- 28:36weekday CrossFit classes get canceled
- 28:39because they are empty.
- 28:47where are you located?
- 28:51And I, and I like Jeremy's response.
- 28:54Uh, what are your owners doing about it?
- 28:59Is it their prior is your owner's
- 29:01priority,
- 29:02the other classes and not CrossFit?
- 29:04Is that why people are going to those?
- 29:06Because that's where their priority lies.
- 29:09Is it, do there,
- 29:10are they giving the same effort at the
- 29:12CrossFit classes?
- 29:14I mean, if I'm a, if I'm,
- 29:16walking into a gym and I notice that
- 29:19this class that I'm in is,
- 29:21is kind of like an afterthought.
- 29:24Of course you're, I'm going to leave.
- 29:34So you're in Pittsburgh, huh?
- 29:38That's usually a really strong area.
- 29:43They have a pretty strong media presence,
- 29:45podcasts, Black Friday deals, etc.
- 29:51I don't think you get retention through a
- 29:52Black Friday deal,
- 29:54but podcasts is a good way.
- 30:04If members join since twenty twenty,
- 30:05they probably don't have the same
- 30:06connection to the open.
- 30:07It's up to the owners to make them
- 30:09care.
- 30:10Yeah, my old gym did the...
- 30:14We split the gym into teams and made
- 30:16the open a competition.
- 30:18And then we have a big party afterwards
- 30:22where we would have a barbecue or a
- 30:24cookout or...
- 30:26go to a venue and have like a
- 30:28big group dinner together.
- 30:30And they would hand out awards for like
- 30:32MVP, most improved.
- 30:35And they would hand out the trophy to
- 30:36the team that won the open competition.
- 30:39The open became the biggest thing in that
- 30:42gym every year.
- 30:44And it became the priority of that gym
- 30:47to have this big community event following
- 30:51the open.
- 30:52and we would have a hundred and fifty
- 30:55people signed up for the open every single
- 30:58year minimum because of that a lot of
- 31:10people in my crossfit just do crossfit
- 31:11because they like the group class setting
- 31:14but they don't care about the methodology
- 31:15sport they don't care about the open
- 31:20I do think it's on the affiliates to
- 31:22make it matter.
- 31:32Larry, that's why I keep bringing it up.
- 31:34We need to push the open,
- 31:35but I agree.
- 31:35The old open had a lot of jazz
- 31:40around it.
- 31:46Um, Vicki with only a few years in,
- 31:49I can honestly say that I have a
- 31:50connection to the open and the season more
- 31:53because of the podcast than my gym.
- 31:56That's sad.
- 31:57That's really sad.
- 31:58Um, I'll say.
- 32:05It's weird.
- 32:05Polaris was owned by Christy
- 32:08Aramo-O'Connell.
- 32:09When she was competing,
- 32:11the Open actually had less push from them
- 32:16because it was the beginning of her
- 32:18season.
- 32:19Now, people would go watch her,
- 32:21and people would kind of compete around
- 32:23it,
- 32:24and all the classes on Fridays were the
- 32:25Open workout.
- 32:27But when she sold the gym,
- 32:29the new owners made it into a bigger
- 32:32event for the community because it wasn't
- 32:35just about the one athlete in the gym.
- 32:38And this is not to dog on Christie
- 32:40or anything like that.
- 32:45This was just about how it was there.
- 32:49And she would have friends come in that
- 32:51were also games athletes to compete with
- 32:53her and to compete against her.
- 32:55And that became more the viewable
- 32:58experience than it was the community.
- 33:01But I think that now that she has
- 33:03sold the gym and the new owners have
- 33:05taken over,
- 33:06that has changed dramatically into now
- 33:08it's more about the community.
- 33:10And it just shows how the affiliate owner
- 33:12themselves can change the dynamic of what
- 33:17the open is for their specific gym.
- 33:19Yeah.
- 33:28We even have a leaderboard for the gym,
- 33:30but the only people who sign up for
- 33:32that are people that sign up for the
- 33:34open.
- 33:40My old gym, Shred CrossFit in Dublin,
- 33:42Ohio, they made the open a priority.
- 33:47It was, I kid you not,
- 33:49like almost the entire gym signed up for
- 33:51the Open.
- 33:52You were split into four or five teams.
- 33:54You all had a different color.
- 33:56They would make up shirts for each color
- 34:00with something representing that year's
- 34:03Open.
- 34:04And you would wear your shirt to represent
- 34:05your team.
- 34:06People would come cheer you on because
- 34:08they were your teammates.
- 34:10It was crazy because they prioritized it
- 34:14that way.
- 34:15They didn't just put up a leaderboard.
- 34:16It was an active philosophy of the gym
- 34:25owner to make that time of year special.
- 34:28and to make it bigger than just this
- 34:31thing that,
- 34:31and I say bigger than this worldwide
- 34:34thing, but in our gym,
- 34:36most of the people did not even care
- 34:37about the rest of the world.
- 34:39They cared about beating the people in the
- 34:41gym.
- 34:41It was,
- 34:42they made this internal thing so huge that
- 34:46everybody participated.
- 34:52Jeremy,
- 34:52I do not know what Christy's doing now
- 34:54at all.
- 34:55I think she's just trying to live her
- 34:56best life.
- 34:57I think she's moved.
- 35:02But even though I went to her gym,
- 35:04it's not like we hung out and stuff
- 35:06like that.
- 35:10It also just seems like a trend in
- 35:11fitness right now.
- 35:12Cardio, lightweight,
- 35:13high-volume training is hot right now.
- 35:15My gym has a lot of young people,
- 35:17and those are the type of classes they
- 35:18are interested in.
- 35:21But I think when you look at all
- 35:23those other types of fitness,
- 35:25and we kind of started this whole
- 35:26conversation on this,
- 35:27is what is your identity?
- 35:29I think,
- 35:31and it was said in the chat,
- 35:33like the people like High Rocks,
- 35:35I don't think they have an identity.
- 35:37They don't have what CrossFit has.
- 35:40CrossFit knows who it is,
- 35:41and we're getting back to that.
- 35:43We're getting back to the roots of that.
- 35:48I don't think High Rocks has that.
- 35:49WFP definitely doesn't have that.
- 35:51They don't know who they are.
- 35:53They don't know where to lean when times
- 35:55are tough.
- 35:57We have finally figured out for the first
- 36:00time since twenty twenty where we can lean
- 36:04when times get tough.
- 36:06We're not fully there.
- 36:08And there's all these questions with a
- 36:09sale or new ownership,
- 36:12but we're at least the people there are
- 36:15trying to get us back to the roots
- 36:16of what CrossFit is.
- 36:28Vicki, we do a big Saturday thing,
- 36:29but now I know not that not a
- 36:31lot of people register, et cetera,
- 36:33and no one makes a big deal about
- 36:34it.
- 36:35That's the problem.
- 36:36The owners at my old gym made a
- 36:38big deal about it.
- 36:39It was talked about for six weeks prior
- 36:41to the open.
- 36:42It wasn't an afterthought.
- 36:44It wasn't just a scheduling thing.
- 36:46It was, Hey, we're going to make t-shirts.
- 36:49We're going to have a draft.
- 36:50We're going to make cool things for
- 36:52everybody.
- 36:53It is.
- 36:53This is our Christmas at our affiliate.
- 36:57The open is our Christmas,
- 36:59and we're going to make everybody feel
- 37:00special.
- 37:01It was more than an afterthought.
- 37:03It can't just be we're going to schedule
- 37:05some time on a Saturday.
- 37:06It's got to be bigger than that if
- 37:08you want it to grow.
- 37:21Jeremy, who has worse online grammar,
- 37:23Ken or Larry?
- 37:27I don't know.
- 37:28I'm a big guy.
- 37:28I'm glad.
- 37:29Like if I'm not at a laptop,
- 37:31I try not to chat because my big
- 37:34fingers do not do well on a phone.
- 37:48These stories are why in the past I've
- 37:50shied away from other fitness trends
- 37:51coming into the CrossFit gyms.
- 37:53If the owners aren't doing a good job
- 37:55prioritizing CrossFit,
- 37:57that other trend will take over.
- 37:59Amen, brother.
- 38:03Larry admits that he's probably the worst
- 38:04grammar.
- 38:09So back on, just to make,
- 38:13just to sum this up, right?
- 38:15We talked about the identity, right?
- 38:18Knowing who you are,
- 38:19knowing what you're good at,
- 38:21and knowing how to lean into what you're
- 38:23good at is what is going to make
- 38:25you successful.
- 38:28The WFP comes into the world based on
- 38:31a fact that someone died at the CrossFit
- 38:34Games and they wanted to compete against
- 38:36CrossFit,
- 38:36yet they would not admit that that is
- 38:39what they wanted to do.
- 38:41So their true identity was,
- 38:43we want to take down CrossFit.
- 38:45We want to compete with CrossFit.
- 38:47Yet, because they were afraid to say it,
- 38:49they couldn't make that their identity.
- 38:52And because they couldn't make that their
- 38:53identity,
- 38:54they had to promise things that they could
- 38:56not fulfill.
- 38:58And because they could not fulfill on
- 39:00those promises,
- 39:02then we've gone into this spiral where
- 39:04nothing is working for them.
- 39:06They can't even get out of their own
- 39:08way because they would not lean into the
- 39:11identity of who they are and what they
- 39:14wanted to be because they were afraid to
- 39:17say it.
- 39:19And because they were afraid to say it,
- 39:21we're where we are today.
- 39:24But we're going to get a season two.
- 39:27We have two big sponsors giving millions
- 39:29of dollars to them.
- 39:30Adidas and Red Bull threw money at them.
- 39:33It's enough to get them another season.
- 39:35Let's see if they can be self-aware.
- 39:38Let's see if they can make the changes
- 39:40that they need to make.
- 39:41But if they continue to try to go
- 39:43down this route,
- 39:44they're not going to have anybody show up
- 39:45at all.
- 39:52Unless they make it a reality show.
- 39:56That's the only way out.
- 39:58That's my take.
- 40:01With that, guys,
- 40:03I got to get back to work.
- 40:05It is Cyber Monday.
- 40:07Take advantage of all the deals out there,
- 40:09especially that ThirdZ deal at ThirdZ.com
- 40:11backslash Jazzy and get free shipping on
- 40:14the deals that they are running until ten
- 40:16p.m.
- 40:16tomorrow night.
- 40:17With that, love you all.
- 40:19Thank you so much for the great
- 40:21conversation.
- 40:22Sign up for the open as soon as
- 40:23it's available.
- 40:24Let's crush last year's numbers and I will
- 40:27see you all next time on Lunch with
- 40:30the Clydesdale.
- 40:32Bye, guys.
