- 1:30Speaker 4: Welcome to the show. Thursday edition of the show, and
- 1:32Speaker 4: we got a lot of stuff to get to. But
- 1:34Speaker 4: of course, the big story all across the state of
- 1:36Speaker 4: West Virginia and even into Ohio and Kentucky has been
- 1:39Speaker 4: the weather. Let's start with Metro News Media riologist Brian Hughes.
- 1:42Speaker 4: Good morning, sir. What can you tell us?
- 1:44Speaker 5: Well, right now across West Virginia, we've got over thirty
- 1:47Speaker 5: thousand customers that are without power. This is you know,
- 1:50Speaker 5: there were two primary areas that we had with strong
- 1:53Speaker 5: storms and that was anywhere from Mason County, West Virginia
- 1:56Speaker 5: about the Point Pleasant area. The first tornado warning in
- 1:59Speaker 5: our region We're really kicked off just before six am,
- 2:03Speaker 5: and that was right up there around northern Lawrence County, Ohio,
- 2:08Speaker 5: and then it moved across Galley and then into Mason County.
- 2:11Speaker 5: But you can see a line just in the power
- 2:14Speaker 5: outage map from Mason County all the way out to
- 2:16Speaker 5: Tucker County where the storms really did some significant damage.
- 2:20Speaker 5: We have trees on houses, trees all on roads, power
- 2:23Speaker 5: lines that are down. And then you had the other
- 2:24Speaker 5: batchel of storms that was across parts of Wyoming and
- 2:28Speaker 5: McDowell Counties, cross parts of southern Logan and Mingo Counties.
- 2:31Speaker 5: I mean, we've talked about what's happened in Logan County
- 2:33Speaker 5: with the big winds that were moving through there, with
- 2:35Speaker 5: the tornado warning that was issued there, and just south
- 2:38Speaker 5: really the tornado warning did encompass Logan itself, but just
- 2:41Speaker 5: south of there, that's where we saw the really the
- 2:44Speaker 5: winds that were twisting, and that went all the way
- 2:46Speaker 5: across to the Beckley area. So we've had two big sections.
- 2:50Speaker 5: But everybody in the state has seen strong thunderstorms. These
- 2:55Speaker 5: were very large severe thunderstorm warnings that they were issued.
- 2:58Speaker 5: When I say large, encompassing, you know, enough real estate
- 3:02Speaker 5: that it was like, wow, that's a that's a big warning.
- 3:04Speaker 5: That's because we had enough wind that they knew at
- 3:07Speaker 5: any point in that line when could gusts up and
- 3:10Speaker 5: be a problem. Now we had those storms this morning.
- 3:13Speaker 5: We're doing clean up now, and we've still got some
- 3:15Speaker 5: of the rain charters that that are going to occur.
- 3:17Speaker 5: But as we go into the safroom of this evening,
- 3:19Speaker 5: there could be around the storms that happened somewhere between
- 3:23Speaker 5: four and six o'clock. Those would be the strongest storms,
- 3:26Speaker 5: and that would be in southern West Virginia to maybe
- 3:28Speaker 5: up here to the Canal Valley and in points east.
- 3:31Speaker 5: But then we have some even late night rain that's
- 3:35Speaker 5: been indicated on some of the forecast models that come
- 3:37Speaker 5: that comes in like ten to eleven o'clock tonight. But
- 3:42Speaker 5: once that's done, tomorrow is awesome, Live on the leve
- 3:46Speaker 5: looking good, Live of love. He's gonna be We're gonaknock
- 3:48Speaker 5: it out the park, gonna be good stuff. Saturday, Sunday
- 3:51Speaker 5: good stuff, Monday storms return.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Okay, So what's before we let you have the timeline
- 3:55Speaker 4: for here in Charleston. So you said we're gonna be
- 3:57Speaker 4: cleaning up. I guess over the next couple of hours
- 3:59Speaker 4: pretty much. Yeah, because we still have in really the
- 4:02Speaker 4: Kanawa Valley when you compare to other areas Brian didn't
- 4:04Speaker 4: get hit are right exactly.
- 4:07Speaker 5: You go north of the Kanagh Valley, Jackson, Rhan Counties, Mace,
- 4:12Speaker 5: Northern Putnam, back into Mason Counties and Calhoun County. It's
- 4:15Speaker 5: a hot mess there. And I mentioned Logan Mingo back
- 4:20Speaker 5: down to Raleigh Counties. It's a mess down there. But yeah,
- 4:23Speaker 5: on Long I sixty four, not as bad as what
- 4:25Speaker 5: everybody else got. But we've got the rain that's wrapping,
- 4:28Speaker 5: that's gonna wrap up here over the next couple of
- 4:30Speaker 5: hours in the Kanau Valley. There's still rain in Kentucky.
- 4:34Speaker 5: I'm concerned about because there's probably gonna be some flooding
- 4:36Speaker 5: across parts of eastern Kentucky, maybe even into parts of
- 4:39Speaker 5: southern West Virginia. But then we go in this afternoon
- 4:42Speaker 5: again four to six is when we see the severe
- 4:44Speaker 5: weather threat the highest, and then we've got some showers
- 4:48Speaker 5: and storms that might be hit and miss, and then
- 4:50Speaker 5: some late evening rain. Ten eleven o'clock tonight, it might
- 4:54Speaker 5: come through. That is still to be determined only because
- 4:57Speaker 5: forecast models with the big storm as it came through
- 5:00Speaker 5: this morning. They've got to rejuvenate, sort of get their
- 5:03Speaker 5: act back together and go Okay, now here's what we're
- 5:05Speaker 5: looking at.
- 5:05Speaker 4: A Metro News Media OLEI is Brian Hughes. Download the
- 5:08Speaker 4: Metro News television app. You can keep up with him
- 5:09Speaker 4: also in social media as well, and of course on
- 5:11Speaker 4: the radio two and we'll be talking to you probably
- 5:13Speaker 4: several times throughout the day.
- 5:15Speaker 5: And the tornado watch has been canceled for much of
- 5:17Speaker 5: our region right now.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Good news there, speaking to which I do want to
- 5:20Speaker 4: say that the Let's Get Cooking event with Cheff Paul
- 5:24Speaker 4: Smith at Capitol Market canceled for the day due to
- 5:26Speaker 4: the threat of severe weather. Brian, thanks a lot. Coming
- 5:30Speaker 4: up later in the show. The USA Pro Road National
- 5:32Speaker 4: Championships continue in Charleston here, good when Chief of staff
- 5:34Speaker 4: Matt Sutton is going to join us to talk about
- 5:37Speaker 4: that a little bit later on. And the June teenth
- 5:40Speaker 4: festivities are happening today through Saturday in Charleston. Tonight at
- 5:43Speaker 4: six at the Connell Semen Convention Center. There's going to
- 5:46Speaker 4: be what's called a fireside chat with doctor Michael Eric Dyson.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Doctor Dyson is going to join me a little bit
- 5:52Speaker 4: later on on the show about five to ten minutes
- 5:54Speaker 4: or so, and plus we'll get to your calls in
- 5:56Speaker 4: Texas well. The Dave Island Show and five eighty Live
- 5:58Speaker 4: is brought to you in part by the Charlie Dirty Birds.
- 6:00Speaker 4: They're on the road this week in Hagerstown. Back at
- 6:02Speaker 4: Gomart Ballpark next Tuesday night to begin a series against York.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Checkout Dirty Birds Baseball dot Com. This Sunday, a big
- 6:08Speaker 4: event happening that South Charleston's Farmers Market, the West Virginia
- 6:11Speaker 4: Music Hall of Fame bringing back, bringing it all back home,
- 6:14Speaker 4: they say, a star studded afternoon of West Virginia music.
- 6:17Speaker 4: A great way to celebrate Father's Day. Sean Zanigae from
- 6:20Speaker 4: the City of South Charleston and the Farmers Market is
- 6:22Speaker 4: here at Michael Lipton from the West Virginia Music Hall
- 6:24Speaker 4: of Fame. Good morning, Michael, welcome.
- 6:25Speaker 2: To the show.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Hey, thanks for having us Sewn. Always pleasure to have
- 6:29Speaker 4: you here as well. Thanks for having me all right,
- 6:30Speaker 4: So this is going to be a great event. It's
- 6:33Speaker 4: three to sixth Sunday at the South Charleston Farmers Market
- 6:36Speaker 4: and Michael, it's a great lineup that you have put together.
- 6:38Speaker 6: Here Yeah, it's an embarrassment of riches. I mean, it's
- 6:42Speaker 6: from beginning to end, there's going to be music, and
- 6:45Speaker 6: there's going to be four current inductees that are going
- 6:50Speaker 6: to perform a little Larry Grows, Bob Thompson, Ann Magnuson,
- 6:55Speaker 6: and John Ellison. But kind of the big news is
- 6:59Speaker 6: Cory Withers, Bill Withers daughter is coming to town to
- 7:02Speaker 6: represent the Withers family and to do a musical tribute
- 7:06Speaker 6: to her dad.
- 7:07Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Yeah, that's awesome because we all know about Bill Weathers
- 7:10Speaker 4: and slab Fork, the private slab Fork, Is that right, Okay?
- 7:13Speaker 6: Yeah, we call them the poet Laureate of.
- 7:17Speaker 4: West Virginia Music and Sean. This means a lot for
- 7:21Speaker 4: the Farmers Market to be able to host this event
- 7:22Speaker 4: on Sunday.
- 7:23Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, we're extremely excited to be able to
- 7:25Speaker 7: partner with them to bring this great event here. It's
- 7:29Speaker 7: the first of its kind that we've had at the market,
- 7:32Speaker 7: So we're very excited about that and works everyone to
- 7:35Speaker 7: come out and have a great time.
- 7:36Speaker 4: And again you're gonna get away at three o'clock and
- 7:39Speaker 4: you are asking there's a suggested donation of twenty Bucks.
- 7:43Speaker 4: That's what according to the flyer, and proceeds will go
- 7:46Speaker 4: right back into the Hall of Fame.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Yeah, it's gonna help fund our ceremony that'll be in
- 7:51Speaker 6: twenty twenty seven between April and May. And there's inflatables,
- 7:56Speaker 6: there's food trucks.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Yeah, local vendors.
- 7:59Speaker 4: A great way to spend Father's Day, plus all the
- 8:01Speaker 4: good stuff Sean that you know that the Farmer's Market
- 8:03Speaker 4: always has yea. So is there a place online where
- 8:07Speaker 4: people can learn more about it to go and check
- 8:09Speaker 4: it out?
- 8:09Speaker 7: Either our Facebook page, the Music Hall of Fames Facebook
- 8:13Speaker 7: page and the city Is I tross some website page?
- 8:15Speaker 4: Do they need to like I know you said there's
- 8:17Speaker 4: a donation, you just pay it there. Do you need
- 8:19Speaker 4: to reserve a spot or the show up? You can
- 8:22Speaker 4: do it however you like on your phone or I mean,
- 8:25Speaker 4: and I looked at I look at Michael at that
- 8:27Speaker 4: lineup of music as you mentioned, you know, Bill Withers, daughter,
- 8:30Speaker 4: John Allis, Bob Thompson. I mean, all of the icons
- 8:33Speaker 4: of West Virginia music are going to be in one spot.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Yeah, I know, it's pretty and it all kind of
- 8:39Speaker 6: fell into place, and especially with Corey coming and then
- 8:42Speaker 6: there's you know that. Then we had the features performers too,
- 8:48Speaker 6: Matt Mullins, William Metheny and Mike mornings Star.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's going to be there.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Are you gonna get all these folks in there to perform?
- 8:54Speaker 4: Are you going to look like run a single Tuesday
- 8:56Speaker 4: or what?
- 8:57Speaker 6: Well, the sets aren't going to be long. And yeah, people,
- 9:03Speaker 6: it just kept organically growing.
- 9:06Speaker 4: It happens, It happens. And yeah, and again we forget Michael.
- 9:08Speaker 4: You don't forget, but a lot of people may forget
- 9:10Speaker 4: what an incredible music scene that West Virginia has in general,
- 9:14Speaker 4: not only in the past but now. I mean, there
- 9:17Speaker 4: continues to be so many great people out there making
- 9:20Speaker 4: great music in West Virginia, playing off the legacy of
- 9:24Speaker 4: people like John Ellison, like Bill Withers and all these
- 9:28Speaker 4: other incredible stars that have come out of the Mountain State.
- 9:31Speaker 6: Yeah, it's it's old and new, and you know, by
- 9:35Speaker 6: the nature of what we do, we induct older people,
- 9:38Speaker 6: but we also try and encourage, encourage, and you know, uh,
- 9:43Speaker 6: support and utilize the next generation.
- 9:46Speaker 4: We've got a great line up and again it all
- 9:48Speaker 4: starts at three. It's it's a South Charleston Farmers Market
- 9:52Speaker 4: and in addition to the music, there's food trucks, there's
- 9:55Speaker 4: inflatables for the kids, gonna be beer and wine available
- 9:57Speaker 4: for the grown folks. Is going to be a great time.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Michael Lipton, Shia Music Hall of Fame. Sean Zanage from
- 10:02Speaker 4: the Farmers Market in City of South Charleston, appreciate you

- 13:36Speaker 4: Did you bring this wicked weather with you from wherever
- 13:38Speaker 4: you came from to Charleston, Manister. It's not always like this, sir.
- 13:42Speaker 12: I was seeking to avoid it, and here now I
- 13:45Speaker 12: am met with the fierce wind and rain of Charleston,
- 13:50Speaker 12: West Virginia.
- 13:51Speaker 2: But it's great to be here.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Nonetheless, you're in town for the June teen festivities, and
- 13:54Speaker 4: there's going to be a fireside chat tonight starting at
- 13:57Speaker 4: six in the Little Theater at the Colosseum the Convention Center,
- 13:59Speaker 4: and tickets are free, but they are asking for registration
- 14:02Speaker 4: or head counsel what not via event Bright. What can
- 14:05Speaker 4: people expect when they come out tonight.
- 14:06Speaker 12: Sir, Well, we might have to literally start the fire tonight, right,
- 14:11Speaker 12: it might be a literal fire side chat. Well, we're
- 14:14Speaker 12: going to speak about June teenth. We're going to talk
- 14:17Speaker 12: about politics. We're going to talk about calling Michelle Obama
- 14:20Speaker 12: a man. We're going to speak about the White House
- 14:24Speaker 12: emphasis on the adjective, modifying the noun. We're going to
- 14:28Speaker 12: talk about a president who's out of control, a neo
- 14:31Speaker 12: fascist resurgence. We're going to speak about race and DEI
- 14:36Speaker 12: and the assault upon blackness. We're going to talk about
- 14:38Speaker 12: American society, the beauty and power of what this nation represents.
- 14:42Speaker 12: We're going to speak about the two hundred and fiftieth
- 14:45Speaker 12: anniversary of America. But we're going to speak about the
- 14:48Speaker 12: delay and denial of opportunity to black people that was
- 14:51Speaker 12: betokened in June teenth, that has seemed to be a
- 14:56Speaker 12: constant and.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Recurring pattern in the American society.
- 14:59Speaker 4: And don't want to talk about June teenth. What does
- 15:03Speaker 4: it mean to you? And not just the dates or
- 15:07Speaker 4: but the overall observance as we sit here in the
- 15:09Speaker 4: year of our Lord, twenty twenty six.
- 15:11Speaker 12: It is twenty twenty six, you know, it means that
- 15:16Speaker 12: we remember history. We have lived in a period where
- 15:19Speaker 12: the erasure of history is astonishing.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Banning of books. I thought we did that.
- 15:24Speaker 12: I don't know in the Soviet Union or some other narcissistic,
- 15:29Speaker 12: myopic and certainly fascist society. But here we are in
- 15:33Speaker 12: America banning books. The Secretary of War formerly Defense ban
- 15:39Speaker 12: two of my books. I don't think he read them,
- 15:42Speaker 12: but there it is. So we're living in a very
- 15:45Speaker 12: tough time and the erasure of that history is pretty
- 15:50Speaker 12: obnoxious and pretty hurtful and destructive, not simply to black
- 15:54Speaker 12: people but to all Americans. I teach at the well
- 15:56Speaker 12: known hbc U Vanderbilt, and being there at Vanderbilt, and
- 16:01Speaker 12: I'm sure you on radio Land got the joke HBCU.
- 16:03Speaker 12: It's not an HBCU, it's a PWI. It's not pyt
- 16:07Speaker 12: as Michael Jackson would say. But the thing is PWI
- 16:11Speaker 12: predominantly white institution HBCU historically Black college and university. Well,
- 16:16Speaker 12: I'm a homeboy cutting up HBCU, so we'll make it
- 16:18Speaker 12: that way. But at Vanderbilt, my students say, why didn't
- 16:21Speaker 12: we study this? Why didn't we know this? Why weren't
- 16:23Speaker 12: we apprized of this? Because we're living in an era
- 16:26Speaker 12: where what I don't like I don't want to hear,
- 16:29Speaker 12: and we can say that on either side, I don't
- 16:31Speaker 12: I mean, I'm for open discussion and conversation. I don't
- 16:35Speaker 12: want to run from the debate. Let's run to the
- 16:37Speaker 12: debate and engage in conversation. But even that ain't an
- 16:40Speaker 12: equal Let's not pretend that both sides have equal responsibility.
- 16:45Speaker 12: Though both sides have participated in problematic practices that need
- 16:50Speaker 12: to be criticized, for sure, But on the other hand,
- 16:53Speaker 12: one has a dominant weight. We have never seen a
- 16:56Speaker 12: president like this. George Bush wasn't this way? Ronald Reagan
- 17:00Speaker 12: pretty bad in my estimation, but certainly wasn't this. What
- 17:03Speaker 12: we see now is the unapologetic expression of anti blackness
- 17:08Speaker 12: and a white supremacist ethic at the heart of American society.
- 17:12Speaker 12: A plane falls up must be DEI. A train doesn't work,
- 17:15Speaker 12: must be DEI, except when it's all white men. I
- 17:18Speaker 12: don't notice they didn't say that the other day, and
- 17:20Speaker 12: that horrible, horrible tragedy in California. So to me, the
- 17:25Speaker 12: arbitrary assignment of worth value or if you will, stigma
- 17:31Speaker 12: has to do with a president's mind who has pervaded
- 17:34Speaker 12: his own administration. And the Department of Justice is doing
- 17:37Speaker 12: exactly opposite of what it should do of the Civil
- 17:40Speaker 12: Rights Division is not holding fast to its historic legacy.
- 17:44Speaker 12: So we're living in a very powerful time of destruction
- 17:48Speaker 12: of ideals and goals. And Juneteenth reminds us that this
- 17:52Speaker 12: nation has always delayed or denied opportunities for African American people.
- 17:57Speaker 2: We've tried to catch up.
- 17:59Speaker 12: Many good minded, good willed people in America have tried
- 18:02Speaker 12: to do the right thing of all colors, races, and ethnicities,
- 18:05Speaker 12: and we have to remember that. But Juneteenth reminds us
- 18:08Speaker 12: that black people paid a price, that that price is
- 18:10Speaker 12: central to the definition of America. And July fourth celebrates
- 18:15Speaker 12: a nation that we often couldn't celebrate. What did Frederick
- 18:18Speaker 12: Douglass say, What to the Negro? What to the enslaved.
- 18:20Speaker 12: What to the black person is the fourth of July.
- 18:23Speaker 12: That's not anti American, that's not anti patriotic. We have
- 18:27Speaker 12: been the most profound patriots in this nation. We have
- 18:30Speaker 12: given blood and time and resource. We went to World
- 18:33Speaker 12: War Two and came back home and couldn't enjoy the
- 18:36Speaker 12: very democracy for which we fought on foreign soil. We
- 18:39Speaker 12: need to know those stories, We need to know that history,
- 18:42Speaker 12: and June teenth reminds us of that.
- 18:43Speaker 4: And what was always interesting to me about that was
- 18:46Speaker 4: in looking back over history, gentlemen, is that you said
- 18:50Speaker 4: it exactly right. I mean, you went to all these
- 18:54Speaker 4: different places all over the world, and you fought, You
- 18:56Speaker 4: gave blood, many many died, and you came back here
- 18:59Speaker 4: and didn't have the right to vote for the people
- 19:01Speaker 4: that sent you there to begin with.
- 19:02Speaker 12: Right, that's a very powerful point. You didn't have the
- 19:05Speaker 12: right to vote. You couldn't sit in the same restaurant.
- 19:09Speaker 12: Prisoners of war who were say German, yes, and World
- 19:12Speaker 12: War two could sit in first class, while the Negro
- 19:15Speaker 12: soldiers as we were then called, who fought for freedom
- 19:19Speaker 12: had to sit behind the cotton curtain in Jim Crow.
- 19:22Speaker 12: The extraordinary paradox, the contradictions of the ideals of America
- 19:28Speaker 12: that most of us adhere to stand up for. Sing powerfully,
- 19:33Speaker 12: Ray Charles singing America the Beautiful. I remember Reverend Al
- 19:37Speaker 12: Sharpening said, he's singing about something he's never seen. He's
- 19:39Speaker 12: got faith in something that he has not yet seen.
- 19:42Speaker 12: We have invested so much energy and resource and defense
- 19:46Speaker 12: of the American society that then come back home not
- 19:50Speaker 12: only World War Two, but be denied, but after Vietnam
- 19:54Speaker 12: and then struggling day to day. Right now we are
- 19:57Speaker 12: seeing the rollback of so much. The Voting Rights Act
- 20:00Speaker 12: has been virtually gutted by an extreme court that refuses
- 20:04Speaker 12: to acknowledge that we need those protections in order to
- 20:07Speaker 12: exercise the franchise. We're not trying to gerrymander districts and
- 20:11Speaker 12: redraw them like we were Picasso in order to benefit
- 20:16Speaker 12: and advantage a narrow, minoritized population. We're trying to compensate
- 20:20Speaker 12: for the denial of opportunity to those minoritized populations.
- 20:24Speaker 2: And can we finally have justice in America? So we're
- 20:27Speaker 2: living in.
- 20:27Speaker 12: Tough times, and we often pay a price for the
- 20:30Speaker 12: very democracy that we're.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Not able to enjoy.
- 20:33Speaker 4: So i'd give Michael Eric Dyson, and I'm sure Ray
- 20:37Speaker 4: explained it to you here. Ray, I am gonna mister
- 20:40Speaker 4: Diyce may be the only one that can talk more
- 20:43Speaker 4: than you do. And I've got to say that in
- 20:45Speaker 4: the best possible way for our good friend Ray.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 20:48Speaker 4: I'm sure Ray explained this to you. In West Virginia, servant,
- 20:51Speaker 4: it was a state holiday talking about juneteen, and then
- 20:54Speaker 4: it was tomorrow is a state holiday, or at least
- 20:57Speaker 4: observance of it. West Virginia days actually on Saturday, but
- 21:00Speaker 4: it's going to be observed tomorrow. Some counties and towns
- 21:04Speaker 4: are going to give Monday off for Juneteenth, which is
- 21:06Speaker 4: a federal holiday, not all it's you know, and it's
- 21:09Speaker 4: always a little weird when you have holidays on weekends anyway,
- 21:11Speaker 4: and when they get observed. But as an outsider looking in,
- 21:17Speaker 4: what do you think of the way that our state
- 21:20Speaker 4: government has handled I'm sure Rays kind of caught you
- 21:23Speaker 4: up on it, on the way that it's been handled
- 21:25Speaker 4: in West Virginia, because as a PR guy to me,
- 21:28Speaker 4: I said, number one, it's the wrong thing to do,
- 21:30Speaker 4: and number two, it's bad optics.
- 21:32Speaker 12: How about that, you know? And I can't see real
- 21:35Speaker 12: will and it's still bad optics. Yeah, it's not good.
- 21:38Speaker 12: I mean, think about the Martin Luther King Junior Holiday
- 21:41Speaker 12: and Arizona, how they held out right and then public
- 21:45Speaker 12: Enemy a rap group for those of you who are
- 21:48Speaker 12: only stuck on Taylor Swift or a little UZI vert
- 21:51Speaker 12: a rap group by the time I get to Arizona,
- 21:54Speaker 12: right playing on by the time I get to Phoenix
- 21:56Speaker 12: by the great Glenn Campbell. Let's just the great Glenn
- 21:59Speaker 12: Campbell and Isaac Hayes remade the song. Anyway, you didn't
- 22:04Speaker 12: expect a history lesson in music, But here we are. Here,
- 22:06Speaker 12: we are so no, it's not good. You know, it's
- 22:09Speaker 12: like when the King birthday and other places, Well, let's
- 22:12Speaker 12: celebrate Roberty Lee Day. So we have to vitiate, we
- 22:16Speaker 12: have to undermine, we have to distort, We have to
- 22:18Speaker 12: get rid of the central fact that the reason we
- 22:21Speaker 12: celebrate that holiday in the first place is because we
- 22:24Speaker 12: failed to celebrate a significant portion of our population that
- 22:28Speaker 12: were loyal and devoted and committed to the very ideas.
- 22:33Speaker 12: We didn't storm the Capitol on January sixth, we didn't
- 22:37Speaker 12: besmirch the legitimacy of democracy and just because the election
- 22:42Speaker 12: didn't turn out the way we wanted. We didn't beat
- 22:44Speaker 12: people down, we didn't threaten people, we didn't kill people,
- 22:48Speaker 12: we didn't really disobey the law. So this way of
- 22:53Speaker 12: handling it in West Virginia is unfortunate, it's tragic. It's
- 22:58Speaker 12: representative of so much of what Gorvidal called living in
- 23:01Speaker 12: the United States of amnesia. We are addicted to forgetfulness.
- 23:06Speaker 12: We don't want to confront that past. And it's ironic
- 23:10Speaker 12: when you look at the New York Times, you know,
- 23:12Speaker 12: nonfiction list of best selling books.
- 23:15Speaker 2: A lot of that stuff has to do with history.
- 23:16Speaker 12: But when it you know, we celebrate what happened in
- 23:19Speaker 12: the Confederacy, we talk about what happened in the Civil War,
- 23:21Speaker 12: we talk about World War Two, we talk about the
- 23:23Speaker 12: Greatest Generation. But boy, when it comes to race, I
- 23:26Speaker 12: don't want that. Let's not have that history. So we
- 23:29Speaker 12: want history, except we want a narrow version of history.
- 23:32Speaker 12: And unfortunately what we've done in West Virginia is cherry
- 23:35Speaker 12: pick and try to get around the central effect that
- 23:39Speaker 12: the delayal of information for a significant population of peoples
- 23:43Speaker 12: was representative metaphoric perhaps of what happens often in American
- 23:47Speaker 12: society when it comes to issues of race and ethnicity
- 23:50Speaker 12: as well.
- 23:52Speaker 4: Can I read a text to you? Because I have
- 23:54Speaker 4: some some and Ray'll Tall is a regular listener to
- 23:56Speaker 4: my show, I'm sure you will be going forward. Yes,
- 23:59Speaker 4: is that I have all types on this show. I
- 24:01Speaker 4: have and I have and I have people. People will
- 24:03Speaker 4: tell me Ray and you can back me up. And
- 24:05Speaker 4: these people say, at Dave Allen, he's too liberal. Well
- 24:07Speaker 4: that day Vallen, he's too conservative. So I guess I
- 24:09Speaker 4: must I must be job.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Don't read that text I sent you. I said you
- 24:13Speaker 2: were handsome.
- 24:13Speaker 4: I'll go ahead, but you also said you couldn't see.
- 24:17Speaker 4: So let's keep that mind, all right. Text says wait
- 24:19Speaker 4: a minute, you take issue with someone freely speaking their
- 24:22Speaker 4: opinion instead, Michelle Obama is a man when Democrats refuse
- 24:26Speaker 4: to describe what a woman or a man are. You
- 24:28Speaker 4: guys have been calling conservatives nazis, Hitler's, racist, homophobes, transphobe,
- 24:33Speaker 4: etcetera for decades now, so don't come in with us
- 24:35Speaker 4: both sides now. This is why myself and thousands of
- 24:38Speaker 4: others have left the Democratic Party over the years.
- 24:40Speaker 12: First of all, you have been talking about transphobia for decades, sir,
- 24:44Speaker 12: calm down.
- 24:44Speaker 2: You don't even know what the word means.
- 24:46Speaker 12: Until ten years ago, most of us didn't let me
- 24:49Speaker 12: speak for my present company include all right, So stop that, sir.
- 24:53Speaker 12: And then when you about you guys, why don't you
- 24:56Speaker 12: deal with the history of white supremacy. Let's just let's
- 24:58Speaker 12: get rid of all that other stuff. What about the
- 24:59Speaker 12: sen point I made, the central point I made about
- 25:02Speaker 12: why many people left the Democratic Party. If you do
- 25:04Speaker 12: a historic analysis, it was because of the Southern Bargain
- 25:08Speaker 12: that Richard Nixon engaged and engineered and the mass deportation.
- 25:14Speaker 12: The mass exodus of white folk from the Democratic Party
- 25:18Speaker 12: had to do with their resentment that black people were
- 25:20Speaker 12: being given in nineteen sixty four, or at least acknowledged
- 25:23Speaker 12: to have the right the Civil Rights Bill sixty four,
- 25:26Speaker 12: the Voting Rights Act in sixty five, the Fair Housing
- 25:28Speaker 12: Act in sixty eight, So.
- 25:30Speaker 2: Sir, do your history.
- 25:31Speaker 12: The mass exodus of white people from the Democratic Party
- 25:34Speaker 12: had to do everything with its anti blackness, its refusal
- 25:38Speaker 12: to acknowledge the central proposition that black people have been
- 25:41Speaker 12: disadvantaged systemically and that white privilege has been put in
- 25:45Speaker 12: its place, and what I mean by white privilege is
- 25:47Speaker 12: not that every white person can go to Harvard Yell
- 25:50Speaker 12: at Princeton. It means that the people who go to
- 25:52Speaker 12: Harvard Yell and Princeton tended to be white. So the
- 25:54Speaker 12: point is that when we talk about these issues, please
- 25:57Speaker 12: don't get caught up in presentice argument. We can talk
- 26:00Speaker 12: about transphobia and homophobia. We can speak about you guys
- 26:03Speaker 12: on the left and you guys on the right. Why
- 26:06Speaker 12: don't you deal with the central fact of white supremacy
- 26:08Speaker 12: in America, the resurgence of the hate for the other. Yes,
- 26:11Speaker 12: this UFC fighter has the right to say what he
- 26:14Speaker 12: has to say, and we have the right to oppose it,
- 26:16Speaker 12: and we have the right to say that it is idiotic.
- 26:18Speaker 12: We have the right to say that we have a
- 26:20Speaker 12: president who's a petulant toddler, who's incapable of acknowledging the
- 26:24Speaker 12: centrality of rationality, who goes off the hinge and doesn't
- 26:29Speaker 12: even stick to his own plans, and the way he
- 26:31Speaker 12: should got us into a war. All you Republicans, since
- 26:34Speaker 12: you're going to talk about you guys, you Republicans said
- 26:37Speaker 12: you're going to vote for a man who said I'll
- 26:38Speaker 12: never get you into war, and I'll be darned what
- 26:41Speaker 12: has he done got us into war? He licks the
- 26:43Speaker 12: boots of Putin, He capitulates too fascists around the world
- 26:47Speaker 12: because he wants to be a strong man. He's a kleptocrat.
- 26:50Speaker 12: He is stealing democracy and money before our very eyes.
- 26:53Speaker 12: He has doubled his net worth in less than a
- 26:56Speaker 12: year in the presidency. Sir, please tell me Mann the
- 27:00Speaker 12: white supremacist and the white Christian nationalists have supported him
- 27:04Speaker 12: in extraordinary fashions.
- 27:05Speaker 2: So there's a lot of stuff we could talk about.
- 27:06Speaker 4: But come on, all right, Well, the textra text back said,
- 27:08Speaker 4: I'm a fifty two year old.
- 27:09Speaker 12: Woman, okay, fifty two yearld woman, So sorry many are
- 27:13Speaker 12: you a fifty two year old white woman.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 27:16Speaker 12: I'm just I'm assuming and let me let me get
- 27:18Speaker 12: hold of my own bias and prejudice. If you're a
- 27:21Speaker 12: fifty two year old woman who's black, then we'd have
- 27:23Speaker 12: a different argument. I'd still say it's crazy, but I
- 27:26Speaker 12: would say, as a fifty two year old, well, fifty
- 27:28Speaker 12: two year old white woman, I'm sure you've done your history.
- 27:31Speaker 12: I'm sure you learned this in school. But then again,
- 27:33Speaker 12: I'm sure you didn't.
- 27:34Speaker 2: I'm sure.
- 27:35Speaker 12: The fact is that we have been policing black history
- 27:38Speaker 12: for decades. The textbook writers out of Texas have made
- 27:42Speaker 12: sure that we now think slavery I wasn't that bad,
- 27:45Speaker 12: and that there were advantages and virtues. Read round DeSantis's
- 27:48Speaker 12: notions of slavery are those who informed him in Florida. So, so,
- 27:54Speaker 12: you're a fifty two yearl white woman, I want you
- 27:56Speaker 12: to respond to white supremacy. I want you to respond
- 27:58Speaker 12: to the advantages that were given to white people. I
- 28:01Speaker 12: want you to respond to the fact that not until
- 28:03Speaker 12: nineteen sixty five did Jim Crow end. Do you know
- 28:06Speaker 12: what Jim Crow is, I'm sure you do. And Jim
- 28:08Speaker 12: Crow was a systematic denial of opportunity to black people
- 28:13Speaker 12: for no other reason than their race. They were qualified.
- 28:16Speaker 12: And then let's deal with the fact that we have
- 28:18Speaker 12: the dumbest, most ill informed white people managing government right now.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Donald Trump is a dummy.
- 28:26Speaker 12: Even if you were progressive, or even if you are liberal,
- 28:29Speaker 12: or even if you are right wing, you got to understand. Look,
- 28:32Speaker 12: William Buckley was a smart guy. I disagreed with him,
- 28:35Speaker 12: but he knew what he was talking about. George will
- 28:37Speaker 12: is a smart guy. I disagree with him, but he
- 28:39Speaker 12: knows what he's talking about. Donald Trump, Pete, hecxcept some
- 28:42Speaker 12: of the most incompetent, ill informed, dumb people we've ever
- 28:46Speaker 12: had in the American government.
- 28:49Speaker 4: I want to ask you about the change in West Virginia,
- 28:51Speaker 4: specifically because you talked about the number of people that
- 28:55Speaker 4: have left a Democratic party in rank back this up to.
- 28:58Speaker 4: In West Virginia, Democrats were in charge of West Virginia
- 29:01Speaker 4: for eighty three years, Okay, in twenty fourteen there was
- 29:05Speaker 4: a revolution whatever, and now we're down to I think
- 29:08Speaker 4: three counties in West Virginia that are now led by Democrats.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Boone County of all. Boone County, West Virginia, just south
- 29:16Speaker 4: of here, which was a county that supported Barack Obama
- 29:19Speaker 4: in two thousand and eight last week, has now flipped
- 29:22Speaker 4: from Democrat to Republican. Any comments on that.
- 29:26Speaker 2: We are gathered here today. He is a minister.
- 29:31Speaker 12: He is presiding over the funeral. Look, it's tough out
- 29:37Speaker 12: here in these democratic streets. The local legislatures of many
- 29:44Speaker 12: not all states, but many states of majority.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Are helmed by Republican.
- 29:54Speaker 12: You know, state senates and Republican representatives, and it seems that,
- 30:00Speaker 12: you know, West Virginia may be going the way of
- 30:01Speaker 12: all flesh in that sense and flipping over, because look,
- 30:06Speaker 12: it's very tough out here. But what's interesting about it.
- 30:10Speaker 12: I think Joe Manchin, was he your senator.
- 30:12Speaker 4: Here, governor Secretary of State?
- 30:14Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 30:15Speaker 12: Yeah, And if that's the index of what we have
- 30:18Speaker 12: as a Democrat, it's been pretty tough from the very beginning.
- 30:21Speaker 12: A lot of Democrats weren't down with the kind of
- 30:23Speaker 12: Joe Mansion variety, of the Catherine of Senator Cinema's variety.
- 30:29Speaker 12: And look, you have to deal with where you are.
- 30:31Speaker 12: Tip O'Neil said, all politics are local. You're in West Virginia.
- 30:34Speaker 12: You can't be too far to the left because you
- 30:36Speaker 12: won't even get elected. And if begetting elected is your
- 30:39Speaker 12: primary concern, then you're not going to adhere to your
- 30:42Speaker 12: conscience all the way. You're going to talk about what
- 30:44Speaker 12: I got to do to get back in office. So
- 30:47Speaker 12: it's it's unfortunate to me that we don't have a
- 30:50Speaker 12: greater balance in the sense that people on both sides
- 30:55Speaker 12: of the aisle. We're not trying to eviscerate right wing
- 30:57Speaker 12: or Republican brothers and sisters were trying to say that
- 31:00Speaker 12: can we have some balance, can we have some acknowledgment
- 31:03Speaker 12: of history and the fact that West Virginia has flipped
- 31:06Speaker 12: that much. I'm gonna have to dig up John Denver
- 31:08Speaker 12: and ask him what the hell is going on because
- 31:10Speaker 12: this ain't cool.
- 31:12Speaker 13: Ray tell us about the events going on tonight. So
- 31:15Speaker 13: this evening we will be at the Civic Center in
- 31:18Speaker 13: the North Hall. Not little theater, okay, this something's going
- 31:20Speaker 13: on so much bigger space in the North Hall, North Hall.
- 31:24Speaker 13: So we're going to be there from six to eight.
- 31:27Speaker 13: Before that, we will have a reception, just a little
- 31:30Speaker 13: meet and greet and just a little mingling everything before
- 31:34Speaker 13: the showtime. That's at again at the Savit Center or
- 31:38Speaker 13: the coliseum. Yeah, all right, and that's just one of
- 31:41Speaker 13: the activities. There's a parade going on tomorrow.
- 31:43Speaker 14: Yes, tomorrow, there will be a parade starting at the
- 31:46Speaker 14: MAK Center and leading into Lay Street to Transit Mall,
- 31:50Speaker 14: and then we will have our festivities with local acts
- 31:53Speaker 14: and local artists at Slack Plaza from noon to four.
- 31:58Speaker 4: I appreciate you setting this up, mister Whiteing. Not bad
- 32:00Speaker 4: for a stealer.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Fan. Thank you.
- 32:02Speaker 14: Also, I want to thank all the sponsors I want
- 32:04Speaker 14: at the committee for help helping us put us together.
- 32:08Speaker 14: And again the sponsors, thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 32:11Speaker 12: And the first hundred people get weed whackers. So come
- 32:15Speaker 12: on out, come on out and celebrate. We're not talking

- 35:43Speaker 4: That'll give me an opportunity to knock out a bunch
- 35:44Speaker 4: of texts and imagine that I got a few texts, says,
- 35:48Speaker 4: sounds like there's going to be a lot of white
- 35:50Speaker 4: bashing going on tonight at the Civic Center, so will
- 35:52Speaker 4: count me out says a texter. Texts, Dave, I listen
- 35:57Speaker 4: to your show to be informed or entertained. Not this,
- 36:01Speaker 4: says a tankster text says Florida Guy, Dave, this was
- 36:06Speaker 4: your worst interview you've ever done by letting this liberal
- 36:09Speaker 4: rant on the radio. Not once did he say Democrats
- 36:11Speaker 4: were all the calls to slavery in the Civil War. You, sir,
- 36:14Speaker 4: hit a new low today, texts Dave. Do you hear
- 36:23Speaker 4: all of the nastiness coming out of his mouth over
- 36:25Speaker 4: my opinion? This is what the divisive issue is. This
- 36:28Speaker 4: is why we cannot have a decent discussion without the snide,
- 36:31Speaker 4: despicable insults because you don't like other opinions. Grow up,
- 36:35Speaker 4: says the texter. Let me address something that the Florida
- 36:39Speaker 4: guy there said, And I appreciate I have no idea
- 36:41Speaker 4: who Florida guy is, but Florida Guy, I appreciate you
- 36:43Speaker 4: because you text the show a lot, and he always
- 36:45Speaker 4: here's well, I guess it's the guy always starts by
- 36:47Speaker 4: saying Florida Guy. When I started doing this show six
- 36:51Speaker 4: years ago, I decided to take the show in another direction.
- 36:56Speaker 4: God bless Danny Jones, Danny and our great friends. But
- 37:00Speaker 4: I wanted to do some things a little bit differently,
- 37:02Speaker 4: and one of those things I wanted to do was
- 37:03Speaker 4: I wanted to offer space and time airtime on the
- 37:07Speaker 4: show for anybody with any opinion. And here's the thing.
- 37:12Speaker 4: June tenth is a federal holiday. Okay, it is going
- 37:15Speaker 4: to be celebrated here in Charleston. This gentleman is one
- 37:23Speaker 4: of the more well known commentators, and he's in town
- 37:26Speaker 4: and he's speaking. And when someone reach out to me,
- 37:30Speaker 4: like my good friend Ray Whiteing reaches out to me
- 37:32Speaker 4: and says, hey, I can maybe get this guy on
- 37:36Speaker 4: your show. I figured it would be a phone interview.
- 37:38Speaker 4: We would record it at nine o'clock at night somewhere.
- 37:41Speaker 4: He brought him in studio, and I appreciate that, and
- 37:45Speaker 4: I appreciate Ray Whiting for doing that. And I also
- 37:48Speaker 4: appreciate mister Dyson's opinions. Look, do I agree with everything
- 37:51Speaker 4: he said?
- 37:52Speaker 3: No?
- 37:53Speaker 4: Does he agree with everything I said?
- 37:55Speaker 1: No.
- 37:56Speaker 4: But one of the problems that we have, my opinion,
- 37:59Speaker 4: is that we cannot have a discussion, or at least
- 38:03Speaker 4: not even a discussion. Man, listen to the other side.
- 38:07Speaker 4: That's one of the problems I think we have as
- 38:09Speaker 4: a society. We don't even want to listen to the
- 38:12Speaker 4: other side. I learn a heck of a lot more
- 38:15Speaker 4: by listening, keeping my mouth shut, and listening to people
- 38:18Speaker 4: I don't agree with that I ever could about people
- 38:20Speaker 4: I agree with. And so if you don't like different
- 38:25Speaker 4: ideas being presented in here, look, we have a lot
- 38:27Speaker 4: of fun on this show. We get dogs and cats adopted,
- 38:30Speaker 4: and we do all these things. But if you don't
- 38:34Speaker 4: like different ideas being presented and something that may challenge
- 38:37Speaker 4: you from what you think, then perhaps this is not
- 38:39Speaker 4: the show for you. Because what I want to do
- 38:42Speaker 4: is I want to make people think. And if it
- 38:45Speaker 4: puts your heels in the ground and makes you ingrained
- 38:49Speaker 4: even more about what you already.
- 38:51Speaker 11: Think, so be it.
- 38:52Speaker 4: At least you can say you listen to some other thoughts.
- 38:55Speaker 4: And I don't know why in the hell we are
- 38:57Speaker 4: so afraid of listening to others people and what other
- 39:01Speaker 4: people have to say, whether you agree or disagree. And
- 39:04Speaker 4: by the way, some of you were upset about the
- 39:06Speaker 4: gentleman I had on I had just as many people
- 39:09Speaker 4: when I have had far right wing people. I'm the
- 39:11Speaker 4: guy that interviewed Derrick Evans. Remember that, Remember me putting
- 39:15Speaker 4: why hell, how could you platform Derreck Evans because he
- 39:19Speaker 4: had a voice, because he wanted to say something. And
- 39:21Speaker 4: I couldn't be any more different than derreck Evans if
- 39:23Speaker 4: I tried. You know how I feel about January sixth.
- 39:26Speaker 4: I put him on the show. I put State Democratic
- 39:30Speaker 4: Party Chair Mike Pushkin. I put State Republican Party Chair
- 39:33Speaker 4: Josh Holstein all on the show. I put a mayor
- 39:37Speaker 4: on the show that from time to time people say,
- 39:39Speaker 4: why do you put the mayor? Because she's the mayor.
- 39:41Speaker 4: That's why in the next mayor, if it's not her,
- 39:44Speaker 4: he or she will be on the show as well.
- 39:46Speaker 4: You know, that's kind of the way we do things here.
- 39:50Speaker 4: I'm the guy that took all kinds of holy hell
- 39:52Speaker 4: because I put Don Blankenship on the air. And you
- 39:53Speaker 4: know what, if Don Blankenship called me today, I'd put
- 39:55Speaker 4: Don Blankenship on the air tomorrow as well. But Dave
- 39:59Speaker 4: Island show in five Any life is bright to you?
- 40:00Speaker 4: Impired by the all new generations for the hurricane visit
- 40:03Speaker 4: Generations forward dot Com. Look who's here, it's Matt Sutton.
- 40:05Speaker 4: How you doing, my friend?
- 40:07Speaker 18: I'm doing good, buddy. I don't I was in a
- 40:09Speaker 18: meeting to get to hear everything, but all I say
- 40:12Speaker 18: is amen. That was great, buddy. I mean, that's exactly
- 40:14Speaker 18: what we should be talking about. I'm happy that you
- 40:17Speaker 18: had doctor Tyson on. That's why I love listening to
- 40:19Speaker 18: your show. I mean, it really is like hearing what
- 40:21Speaker 18: other people have to say. It's not always easy, but boy,
- 40:25Speaker 18: it's important and it's more important today. You said it
- 40:28Speaker 18: better than anybody else could say it, so I'll leave
- 40:30Speaker 18: it there. But thanks for that, man, that was good.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Well, I don't know why we why.
- 40:36Speaker 4: I mean, again, you have every right to listen to
- 40:39Speaker 4: this or anything else. Do you have every right to
- 40:40Speaker 4: start it off as somebody who tends to be a
- 40:42Speaker 4: little bit more libertarian in my views? The older I
- 40:47Speaker 4: get it because I just don't really care what people do.
- 40:50Speaker 4: I mean, I really don't care. It's none of my business.
- 40:53Speaker 4: But this doesn't mean I'm going to only listen to
- 40:55Speaker 4: people who agree with me. I'm wanna listen to everybody.
- 40:58Speaker 4: I would much I would much rather listen to somebody
- 41:01Speaker 4: who's the polar opposite of me.
- 41:03Speaker 18: Well, I'm the same way, I think because I think
- 41:04Speaker 18: it's important, because I think it's the only way to.
- 41:07Speaker 18: And I sometimes get accused of being a devil's advocate
- 41:09Speaker 18: to try and take other positions, and people like, well,
- 41:11Speaker 18: what do you really think? And I was like, if
- 41:13Speaker 18: everybody thinks the same, then it's really boring. And then
- 41:15Speaker 18: how do you actually truly believe and know what you
- 41:18Speaker 18: believe if nobody ever challenges it?
- 41:20Speaker 2: And I think that's really important.
- 41:21Speaker 18: I think that's what your show does, like put people
- 41:23Speaker 18: on where you listen to it and you're like, no,
- 41:25Speaker 18: I don't agree with that person, and this is why,
- 41:28Speaker 18: and you in your own mind you can.
- 41:29Speaker 2: You can counter their arguments, but it's not just a no.
- 41:33Speaker 18: I don't want to hear what they have to say,
- 41:35Speaker 18: because then we get siloed like we are today and
- 41:37Speaker 18: we end up with the world we're in where it's
- 41:39Speaker 18: just like to your point that nobody can have a
- 41:41Speaker 18: conversation anymore.
- 41:42Speaker 4: Can I tell you about my really weird idea? And
- 41:44Speaker 4: we'll promise, I promise we'll talk about the bike event, right,
- 41:46Speaker 4: so you know I'm going into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Yeah,
- 41:50Speaker 4: although architectures that may that may be revoked, I don't know.
- 41:53Speaker 2: I doubt it.
- 41:54Speaker 4: In October I got this idea that I want to
- 41:56Speaker 4: rent a limo. I'm gonna call my buddy Tim Morris
- 41:58Speaker 4: Channel Limousine, and I want to rent a limo and
- 42:01Speaker 4: I want to get I want to put in that limo.
- 42:03Speaker 4: I'm We'll put in Mike Pushkin, and I'm gonna put
- 42:06Speaker 4: in Greg Thomas, and I'm gonna put in maybe Mike
- 42:11Speaker 4: Stewart's uh, And I'm just going to go all around
- 42:15Speaker 4: and I'm going to get the most the most differing
- 42:17Speaker 4: opinions that we can get, put them in a limo
- 42:20Speaker 4: by eight deep, and we're going to drive from Charleston
- 42:22Speaker 4: to the Museum of Radio and Television with the Hall
- 42:25Speaker 4: of Fame inductions are going on in October, and we're
- 42:29Speaker 4: going to go down I sixty four and everybody's going
- 42:31Speaker 4: to be in the limo together.
- 42:32Speaker 2: That's great, that's great.
- 42:33Speaker 18: And here's the thing, good luck And those folks would too, though,
- 42:36Speaker 18: I mean the people you named would do that, They
- 42:38Speaker 18: would absolutely do that, absolutely, But people are just so
- 42:41Speaker 18: quick to and again I know that's not we're here
- 42:42Speaker 18: talking about, but people are people are so quick to
- 42:44Speaker 18: do it. I used it perfect example of you know,
- 42:46Speaker 18: we've got to obviously have their guy coming up on
- 42:48Speaker 18: the fourth of July and the governor's doing the celebration,
- 42:50Speaker 18: and after he announced that, everybody comes up because well,
- 42:53Speaker 18: you know that must make you all mad. We're like, no, actually,
- 42:56Speaker 18: we've been talking with them, we've been coordinating with them,
- 42:58Speaker 18: we've been helping them, they've been helping us. And more
- 43:00Speaker 18: people on trust says more people in Taruston. Why is
- 43:02Speaker 18: the first assumption that the governor does something during the
- 43:04Speaker 18: fourth of July that we would be mad. No, we
- 43:06Speaker 18: all work together on this, and people just it sometimes
- 43:09Speaker 18: baffles them. So first of all, I think I think
- 43:12Speaker 18: that's a great idea, and I think all those people
- 43:13Speaker 18: would get in that car because they'd have a blast.
- 43:15Speaker 4: Yeah, they'd have a blast, and there might be alcohol involved.
- 43:17Speaker 4: I'm just saying, well, could be, yeah, not too much.
- 43:21Speaker 4: All right, Well we're not the ones driving, Okay, Yeah,
- 43:24Speaker 4: you don't want too much. I want to turn into
- 43:25Speaker 4: a fight somewhere near to London or something. All right,
- 43:28Speaker 4: So let's talk about the event. You know, I know
- 43:31Speaker 4: you're keeping a close eye on the rain. We're keeping
- 43:33Speaker 4: a close eye on Brian Hughes in there too in
- 43:34Speaker 4: the studio to see what he's going to do for us.
- 43:36Speaker 2: Oh, there is yes.
- 43:37Speaker 4: So everything went well last.
- 43:39Speaker 18: Night, Everything went great last night, Everything went well on Tuesday.
- 43:44Speaker 18: Tonight again, if we're talking about traffic, which I'm here
- 43:47Speaker 18: to talk about, tonight, absolutely mimics last night. So soft
- 43:51Speaker 18: closure starts about four thirty, hard closure at five o'clock.
- 43:55Speaker 18: Soft closure and hard closure. Just let me get the
- 43:57Speaker 18: difference between that is, just because it's a salt we say,
- 44:00Speaker 18: soft closure doesn't mean there might not be a street
- 44:02Speaker 18: you can't get down. It just means you can get
- 44:03Speaker 18: in and out. You still might have to wait a minute,
- 44:06Speaker 18: but you can still get in and out and you
- 44:07Speaker 18: can still maneuver around. Once we have that hard closure
- 44:10Speaker 18: at five again, in that footprint from Lead to the
- 44:13Speaker 18: Boulevard and Court Street to Hell Street, that is hard closure.
- 44:17Speaker 18: You're stuck tonight, so that tonight will be exactly the
- 44:19Speaker 18: same as yesterday. Again, similar advice, Start to leave downtown
- 44:24Speaker 18: if you're not going to stay around four fifteen, four thirty,
- 44:27Speaker 18: make sure you're out by five. And then we hit
- 44:29Speaker 18: into the road races over the weekend Friday, Saturday, Sunday,
- 44:34Speaker 18: which are pretty much all the same. The key things
- 44:36Speaker 18: to remember for that Friday Saturday Sunday, Canaal Boulevard will
- 44:40Speaker 18: be closed from Clindenon to Wartz Avenue, Clinton Street to
- 44:43Speaker 18: Warts Avenue. The Canal Boulevard shut down, the south Side
- 44:46Speaker 18: Bridge is shut down to motorists. You have to use
- 44:48Speaker 18: Ferry Street for the south Side Bridge access, but the
- 44:52Speaker 18: south Side Bridge will be shut down, and we will
- 44:55Speaker 18: have rolling closures in place throughout the entire race route.
- 44:58Speaker 18: And if you're in the race route, go to our
- 45:00Speaker 18: go to the city's website, go to the CVB's website,
- 45:03Speaker 18: go to the city's Facebook page. There's a ton of
- 45:05Speaker 18: places to get the information about what that means. But
- 45:08Speaker 18: all of those along the race routes are soft closures,
- 45:11Speaker 18: and that just means you might have to wait a
- 45:12Speaker 18: minute for the bike traffic to get past in order
- 45:15Speaker 18: for it to be safe for you to go through,
- 45:18Speaker 18: but you'll either have a volunteer or police officer that
- 45:20Speaker 18: they will let you through. So Friday Saturday Sunday, hard
- 45:23Speaker 18: closures are at a minimum, really the boulevard from Clinton
- 45:27Speaker 18: in to Wartz and then the south Side Bridge. Other
- 45:30Speaker 18: than that you're going to see soft closures, and really
- 45:32Speaker 18: that is just about it. Might take you a few
- 45:33Speaker 18: extra minutes to get through. To move through that way, the.
- 45:38Speaker 4: Manim will have to jump in air, take a break,
- 45:40Speaker 4: finish your thought and I'll take a break. Then I'm
- 45:41Speaker 4: gonna have you stick around.
- 45:42Speaker 18: But go okay, yeah, absolutely. The only thing I'm gonna
- 45:44Speaker 18: say is is the only exception, and we make this clear.
- 45:46Speaker 18: The only exception to the soft closures on the route
- 45:48Speaker 18: is Oakridge. Oakridge. You cannot get off of oak Ridge
- 45:52Speaker 18: onto the Greenbriar Street. And the reason for that is
- 45:54Speaker 18: the bikes come down too fast and we can't time
- 45:57Speaker 18: it perfectly. So if you try to get from Oakridge
- 45:59Speaker 18: to Greenbriar Street, you're gonna get stuck. You can't get
- 46:02Speaker 18: there other than net We'll come back and address the
- 46:04Speaker 18: rest of it, all right.

- 48:40Speaker 4: when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgati mortgaant America's largest
- 48:43Speaker 4: injury law firm. Matt Sutton is here. We got a
- 48:45Speaker 4: couple of texts here and let's see what do you
- 48:48Speaker 4: have to say about them. One of them wanted to
- 48:50Speaker 4: know if Charleston would be moving the homeless people. The
- 48:54Speaker 4: question is will Charleston PD be doing their annual homeless
- 48:57Speaker 4: round up before regarded this year.
- 48:59Speaker 18: No, never done an annual homeless round up before Regatta.
- 49:03Speaker 18: We do have communication with our homeless population to let
- 49:07Speaker 18: them know what's coming through. Unfortunately, a lot of times
- 49:11Speaker 18: our homeless population can experience folks who aren't super happy
- 49:14Speaker 18: to see them or have something to say with them,
- 49:16Speaker 18: especially when alcohol can get involved. So we give them
- 49:18Speaker 18: a warning that you know people are coming through and
- 49:21Speaker 18: that you know they can have all the variety of
- 49:23Speaker 18: services in town. But that narrative that the homeless sweep looksten.
- 49:28Speaker 18: We do warrant sweep throughout the entire year, and that's
- 49:31Speaker 18: what the police department does. That if folks have warrants
- 49:33Speaker 18: out for their arrest, then the police department has to
- 49:35Speaker 18: do what they have to do. But no, there's never
- 49:37Speaker 18: been an annual homeless sweep and there never will be.
- 49:40Speaker 4: My attendance is a tech with the bike race.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Last night.
- 49:42Speaker 4: Event it self was great, a lot of fun to watch,
- 49:44Speaker 4: but the city looks bad. Park near Davis Park in
- 49:46Speaker 4: Summer Street looks awful, dead plants, dead flowers. It's Americas
- 49:49Speaker 4: two hundred and fiftieth year. We're working hard on it.
- 49:52Speaker 4: It was a rough winner, and honestly, the rough winter
- 49:56Speaker 4: led to a lot of difficult times. Especially it was
- 49:59Speaker 4: related to you utility construction downtown. If you've been downtown
- 50:02Speaker 4: in the last couple of months, you can know that
- 50:03Speaker 4: we've had a lot of utility work. We've had to
- 50:05Speaker 4: clean a lot of that up. That's put a lot
- 50:07Speaker 4: of things on pause. Davis Park is one in which
- 50:11Speaker 4: we're working on again. If you've been downtown a lot,
- 50:14Speaker 4: you'll know the Department Health Human Resources has been doing
- 50:16Speaker 4: a lot of work to both those buildings, the Diamond
- 50:19Speaker 4: Building and by Davis Park.
- 50:20Speaker 18: So it's been hard with that construction. Our Beautification Commission
- 50:23Speaker 18: actually met with May Goodwin and myself two weeks ago
- 50:26Speaker 18: for their plan for Davis Park. So yeah, I mean
- 50:28Speaker 18: we're working hard we got it as much as we could.
- 50:31Speaker 18: A lot of utility construction took place and that and
- 50:34Speaker 18: roads took precedent. But things are starting to come together.
- 50:36Speaker 18: I think it really is starting to come back together.
- 50:39Speaker 18: It was a rough winner, but feel good about where
- 50:41Speaker 18: things were. But if there's any particular areas you know,
- 50:44Speaker 18: please feel free to reach out to our office and
- 50:46Speaker 18: let us know because it's important to know what's there.
- 50:48Speaker 18: But yeah, we've been working on that. Coming out of
- 50:51Speaker 18: a rough winter was tough, but we feel good about
- 50:53Speaker 18: where we are and where we're heading into the summer.
- 50:55Speaker 4: All right, man, I appreciate you being here. Met your
- 50:57Speaker 4: News Midday. Coming up later today, we're going to have
